onversations around men and mental health are starting to evolve way beyond the once considered acceptable ‘she’ll be right mate’ and the ‘toxic masculinity label’ that has been used to coin negative or manipulative behaviour by men. What we often don’t think about when we talk about men or mental health is, that they can be three times more likely to take their own lives than women, and it’s largely not just a result of triggers or what they’ve been through but the lack of ability to talk freely and be themselves without judgement. The male stereotype has been in crisis and the expectations of men have been forced to be more diverse. The good news is though, guys are generally starting to find new pathways to speak up, and that being vulnerable does not make you a lesser man. Men’s empowerment mentor David Berriman, and founder of the ‘5 day mindset reset challenge for men’ doesn’t like the term toxic masculinity as he believes it personifies that all men carry these toxic traits, which he prefers to refer to as ‘damaged’ or ‘wounded’ experiences. “There are a lot of men who are damaged or wounded and labelling this toxic, especially by the larger society only causes more shame and self defence mechanisms and behaviours. The first step is to recognise any damaging behaviour and create less confrontational conversations around it,” he said. Last month beginning June 16 it was men’s mental health week – something that largely goes unnoticed, despite just a few outwards facing men commenting on it and the need for more men to come forward and check in, share troubles and move beyond the thoughts and feelings of past experiences. There’s a lot more pathways now to help men open up and speak, even if it be via the physical experience and in the hair and beauty industry. It starts with normalising confidence and empowerment that women use to support each other. It’s not new to talk about men’s mental health but with the pandemic we’ve all been through we’ve had to realise, however we relate or refer to ourselves, is that we’ve all needed to be more attuned to our mental health signals, spirals and successes and create our reality based on a place of being whole, not from fear, power or a lack of control. From men’s health to hair health, the reality is the growth in men’s hair and grooming isn’t a trend, it’s a pathway to recognising all kinds of individuality and having those necessary conversations men for far too often ignored.

MANSPACES NAME: Seven&One Studio WHO: Todd Page WHERE: 1/2573 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach, Queensland, 4218 SIGNATURE: Seven&One is known for a wide spectrum of haircuts and straight razor shaves. Owner Todd says men’s hair has been steering away from the clean cut/sharp skin fade styles and more to lived in natural looking hair in the last few years. “I’ve found success in gaining the client’s trust and having the creative freedom by spending that little bit extra time asking the crucial questions at the initial consultation,” said Todd. “How long do you want to spend doing your hair in the morning and most importantly when do you want to come back again? Also, having the courage and vision as a barber to point out things that you can see don’t work or look good and rectifying them goes a long way.” STYLE: The ‘modern classic’ style sets them apart from other barbers on the Gold Coast. Industrial style work benches, raw polished concrete flooring, an array of indoor plants, artwork by Seoul-based Australian artist John Kaye, sculptures by American artist Kaws with tunes playing from an old school record player. There’s also a fully stocked bar with beer, wine and spirits. Retro barber chairs and bookshelves with the likes of Basquiat books that confirm this shops true appreciation of artistry. SERVICES: Haircuts, traditional hot-towel straight razor shaves, beard/moustache/eyebrow trims, hair cleansing and scalp massage. All services come with a complimentary refreshments from the fully stocked bar. 6 - INSTYLE MEN

NAME: Benicky & Sons Barbershop WHO: Luke Benicky WHERE: 4/597-599 Military Rd, Mosman NSW 2088 SIGNATURE: "We do our best to ensure every client that comes through the door is welcomed like family. We bring a positive vibe and upbeat demeanour so everyone leaves the shop feeling better than when they walked in and not just because they have a fresh trim. As a barber, I want to make everyone around me have a better day and be that source of light in their life. In saying this, I end up getting so much from my clients too,” said Luke. “Everyone has something to teach you, and I receive blessings on blessings from people who sit in my chair every single day. I’m forever grateful for my clientele for being with me for so long and also to the ones who have just come on board with me. I treat them with love, humility and enthusiasm to keep them coming back! It’s the relationship you build with your clients that well and truly goes beyond just a haircut.” STYLE: The style of the Mosman store is reminiscent of a 1930s to 1940s era, upper-class whiskey bar, and speakeasy. With dark brown wooden tones, a giant custom made secret bookshelf door, 1920s to 1940s era original antique barber chairs imported from the US and from here in Australia. All finishes and fixtures are premium with no expense spared. A place that will age gracefully and somewhere with a warm homely feel more of an experience of stepping back in time, rather than clean cut modern finishes. SERVICES: The wide majority of haircuts usually fit into a classic category, side parts and short, choppy, textured haircuts, based on the demographic of clientele around the suburbs in the Lower North Shore. The shop provides straight razor shaves with facials included and beard shaping. Luke said, “we all wear a 1920s era custom replica uniform that we get from London to make sure clients feel like they’re getting taken care of by a professional and I believe it shows we care about brand imagery and experience from when you first look at us - we want to stand out!” Any person who comes through the door is greeted with a beverage of their choice, such as whiskey, rum, gin, beer or coffee, free of charge. “Once again, experience and service is everything to us, to humbly and gratefully serve our fellow man, no matter title or rank,” Luke said.

TIN MAN THE HEART OF STYLING FOR 15 YEARS HAS A NEW SHINY REBRAND WITH MUK MEN’S TINS RELAUNCH AND A BRAND NEW CAMPAIGN, WITH MORE TO COME IN 2022.

M

uk Haircare has long championed men’s haircare for 15 years and counting. Now the Australian owned brand is introducing the all new muk men tins with a brand new design that remains true to its original roots. muk wanted to honour the well known colours of the product that are recognised by professionals and consumers alike. Lovingly referring to muk’s tins by colour, “I use the red one or the purple one” can no doubt be heard nationwide across salons. It’s hard to believe that muk Haircare launched in 2006, which stylists will remember with one styling tin, Hard muk Brutal Hold Styling Mud. The very first design-led the brand to where they are today as a full service salon professional brand. With 15 years of experience in the professional styling game, and with the same design, it was time for the brand to take on a new look despite how successful they remain. Their seven well known styling tins have been a true backbone of the brand and where the business is most represented where they are as a professional haircare company. muk’s seven best-selling products remain the same including Savage muk Styling Mud, Hard muk Styling Mud, Dry muk Styling Paste, Slick muk Pomade, Filthy muk Styling Paste, Raw muk Styling Mud and Rough muk Forming Cream. The range offers the complete palette for styling, texturising and hold,

and will now be elevated by the new look, launching to the market from August this year. Loyal followers of the brand will be excited to hear that they’re starting with men’s as Hard muk Styling Mud was the pioneer for the product launch in muk Haircare, and will now increase market share with the new design packaging. The launch also coincides with the muk Haircare’s new male focused campaign showcasing the versatility of the products by introducing two male models – one with shorter and the other with a longer style. This showcases the versatility of the products on various lengths and textures of hair. Shorter cuts can suit the pastes and muds, while the trend for texturised longer styles, can be executed with the creams and pastes, to achieve a variety of styles. By playing on the natural texture of the hair, the product truly is for everyone and not limited just to the male market. Keep in mind that it was important to the brand to maintain muk’s identity, to keep the tin colours we know and love, but to reinvent and create a bolder statement with the new black aluminium tin and vibrant design. Not only is the new design sleek, but modern, with a contemporary feel that stands out amongst other products on a shelf. Instantly recognisable, it’s the ‘ORIGINAL REDESIGNED’ that fans of the brand can proudly display in salons. The modernisation of the familiar look keeps the love in the products that customers easily recognise by being able to pick out their favourite product by colour. The new-look will continue to please current users, professionals and consumers while welcoming a new users into the modern era. Running the full tin gamut for staying true to tradition and design, the August 2021 relaunch is only the first phase in the muk Haircare wet line repack, which will also be rebranded in 2022 with a new design for their wet line products including haircare and styling. The range continues to exude style while welcoming a new era for clients and consumers. For more information visit www.mukhair.com

INPROFILE

STEPHANIE PFALZGRAF X AMERICAN CREW WE SPENT A DAY CELEBRATING DIVERSITY AND UNCOVERING A COLLECTIVE MINDSET WITH STEPHANIE PFALZGRAF. HERE WE WELCOME YOU INSIDE THE MIND OF A FEMALE BARBER THAT CHALLENGES THE STATUS QUO IN MEN’S HAIR. How would you describe your style? At this very moment, I would describe my style as being really natural, raw, soft and far away from constructive looks and solid geometric shapes. I enjoy emphasising the pure state of the hair, creating effortless looks.

What is your favourite men’s style at the moment and how have we seen men’s hair change? Everything mid-length and long hair! It makes me happy to see that guys are keen to try longer styles and explore the diversity which comes with growing their hair out.

What were your go-to products on the shoot? American Crew Alternator, Boost Spray, Fibre Foam, and the Beard Oil which I like using as a serum, and not to forget Finishing Spray for the action on set.

What do you love most about collaborating on editorial? There is always this little bit of uncertainty when it comes to collaborating on editorial, which is a great reminder to trust the process and I really enjoy that. It’s so important to be open to everyone’s input and to listen carefully no matter if it’s the photographer, stylist or model. You will learn from every single person on set, and once everyone is in the flow it is incredible to see how things unfold.

How does the American crew brand complement your approach to hair? American Crew is more than just short and classic men’s hairstyles. The products are very versatile and I enjoy playing around and mixing different products together and pushing them further than what they are typically used or made for. There are no limits when it comes to creating! All you need is a solid foundation which American Crew provides and then it’s up to you to step outside of the box to break the rules. You had a distinct idea of what you wanted to create for the shoot. What was your inspiration and how did this idea come about? My inspiration behind Synchronicity came from fascinating occurrences of coincidences I experienced over the past two years. It’s a reflection of finding unity in diversity, a reminder that we are all one. I’m so grateful that American Crew and INSTYLE believed in my idea that has been sitting with me for awhile now and gave me this platform to express my creativity and thoughts.

Who do you most look up to in hairdressing? There are many people I look up to. It starts with my mentors and friends in the industry, and obviously well-known people globally like Eugene Souleiman. Overall I look up to people who create unapologetically, constantly push boundaries, break norms, and take risks. What do you look for in models? That is a good question – a few people have been asking me this lately. Most of the time I start visualising ideas in my head no matter if it is creating looks for the American Crew All Star Challenge, this editorial, or even making art and then I take it from there and trust my vision. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle and I know what I’m looking for is out there. I prefer to work with my models, not forcing something on them which is not aligning with their identity because it will reflect in the final images.

MY WAY

FADED Nicky Arthur, Salon Owner of Arthur+Co Hair, Sydney

To fit the 2021 fashion look, I would like to see an oversized coat or a chunky knit cardigan, with a turtleneck underneath and swap out the boots for sneakers like Nike Dunk Low Top or a pair of Golden Goose. Not only is he handsome but he’s also young, so I would style his hair with the high skin fade that is sexy, masculine and short. The high skin fade hair cut will taper his sides and back to look like a shaved cut. This kind of fade clearly highlights the men’s style on top. I would also like to disconnect the top to add emphasis and make the hair cut more of a fashion statement. I would leave a voluminous quiff to make the look retro and natural. This cut is sharp and edgy and can be low maintenance as well. My styling would be with Pure Deluxe Pomade for a heavy hold, shine and to define the cut. Also, if he wanted to give the style a more slick back 2021 retro look, the new Pure Deluxe Pomade is the perfect product for this look.

MY WAY

MILITARY BLONDE

Costa Zacharia, Co-owner & Principal Barber at UNOIT, Darlinghurst Power dressing is definitely in at the moment and you can see this guy means business! I love the coat as a feature and the contrasting colours of his hair; his pants and coat complement each other very well. The boots are perfect for the colder winter months and the style is trending this season as well. There’s not much I don’t like about this look, its super chic while still keeping it masculine. For his hair, if he were in my chair, I’d love to see a little more length on the hair giving him more options when styling. Icy toners are always great on men. They’ve done a great job with his lightener and kept it very clean and white. To bring out more texture in the cut, I’d blow-dry a matte paste into the hair. By adding heat after a paste it grits the hair up and gives it maximum texture. Since he’s lightened it up to the max already we could play with a different tone as it washes out. Ash is always great on men and then even experiment with a light pink for a fun event or just because.

INCOLLECTION

URBANE TRAVEL TO LONDON WITH THIS WINNING MEN’S COLLECTION.

WELCOME TO THE Urbane collection, the recently awarded 2021 Men’s Hair Specialist of the Year Collection at the Australian Hair Industry Awards (Creative), won by Anthony Staltari of Barbery Australia. “A long time dream of mine was always to travel to the UK to create hairstyles. In November 2019 I took a flight to London to create my collection,” Anthony said. “The hair had to consist of several different lengths and textures, from hairstyles such as fades through to longer styles that are not so commonly seen in Australia.” “This was to fit the sophistication of the models and the clothing they were dressed in. I wanted to fit the old school theme of the London style still utilising modern techniques to finalise this collection,” he said. The black and white collection puts shape, cut and style into extreme focus, showcasing both editorial inspiration and wearable styles your clients will love.
