EVERY REASON TO HAVE PRIDE Here we are, 15 months after the world was tipped on its head and the industry has continued to demonstrate just how resilient and essential it is. Whilst we anticipated our entry numbers this year would be down on previous years, there was still an encouraging volume of great work entered. Our new category for Business Awards was introduced and picked up by a number of businesses who are collectively doing great things not only for themselves but also for their staff and our print community overall. Congratulations go to the newest members of the 50 Gold Medals club and 100 Gold Medals club, and having representatives from other companies ask how many more Golds they need to break in to these clubs is proof of the pride you all have in your craft. Parts of the globe are still experiencing hard hitting restrictions, but we were lucky enough to share a fabulous awards evening in Auckland. It was, however, most unfortunate that our friends from Wellington could not join us in person, particularly our Supreme Award winner. We missed celebrating with you and look forward to everyone being together next year. Thank you again to all of our valued sponsors and wonderful Patron, your ongoing support ensures the continuation of the Awards programme and the opportunity to celebrate excellence in our industry. THANKS FROM THE CHAIR Lisa Hegh, Pride In Print Chair, shares her thoughts with the audience at the Pride In Print Awards Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my absolute privilege to welcome you all to the 28th Pride in Print Awards. As we all know, the last 15 months have been like nothing we have ever experienced before and it is testament to the strength of the Awards Programme that we are all here tonight, continuing to celebrate our industry. To our patron Fujifilm, and to our sponsors, every single one of you stayed on board for this year despite the upheaval of 2020, and for that we are truly grateful. Without your support we would not be here tonight. A big thank you must also go to the judges who are the ones that have the toughest job of all: looking in minute detail at every single entry and recognising the excellence that tonight’s winners represent. To my fellow committee members, I appreciate the time you have all given to steer the Awards through the last two years – not only as we navigated our way through Covid, but also through a change of chair, and a change of management. CONVENOR OF JUDGES Everyone should take pride and celebrate the quality of work in this year’s Pride In Print Awards As this year’s convenor of judges, I am pleased to have the task of thanking all our fantastic judges from this year, for giving up their time and effort to judge all the entries submitted from 2020. Likewise, the employers who allow these judges the time required to achieve this, without your support and the entries submitted this night would not exist, my thanks to you all. We had 556 entries submitted this year, and the judges continue to be wowed by what’s put in front of them. Their comments at judging support this with positive and robust discussions. BUSINESS AWARDS 2021 saw the introduction of the Business Awards aimed at expanding the focus of the Awards programme. The Business Awards recognise the companies that demonstrate excellence and commitment in three separate categories - Wellness, Sustainability and Innovation. They reflect the overall development of our industry and expand from the traditional focus on the excellence of the products we produce, to also highlighting the businesses that are driving the future of the sector. Entries were open to all companies in the industry who were required to demonstrate their vision, actions, outcomes and ongoing commitment in their chosen category with each of those elements being integral factors in the success of individual businesses as well as contributing to the evolution of the sector overall -- ensuring that print continues to have a great story to tell.

Alex Huynh, of Soar Print, is the PrintNZ Trainer of the Year.

Labelmakers is the PrintNZ Training Company of the Year.

He says, “I feel honoured, excited, proud, and grateful for the recognition. My family and colleagues were very proud of my achievement.”

Tracy Hislop, administration manager and Rachel Wymer, operations manager, say being named Training Company of the Year rewards a whole team effort towards establishing training as a fundamental aspect of the firm’s practice.They say, “We are incredibly proud of this achievement and all of the work our team has put into training and development of our employees. We are excited to be recognised as Training Company of the Year in the print industry after some challenging years developing our training culture and programme.”

“I thank Fred Soar, Jenny Carter, and Vicky Soar for the opportunity; Brian Landry, Stephen Andersen and my teams in the Digital Department; and everyone at Soar Print. It is so nice to be working with such a team of excellent professionals. “Also, I would like to make special mention of Michael Petelo, the trainer before me, and also to PrintNZ and Competenz. This has also given me a personal boost of confidence to encourage me to look at further development within my career in the print industry.”

PRINT APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR Travis Jordan, of Soar Print, is the Print Apprentice of the Year. Also named as the GAPF Digital Apprentice of the Year (joint), Travis was blown away to even be nominated. On winning the award, he said, “To have this acknowledgment for the effort and time I put into my craft is really special and a reminder you get out what you put in. “I received so much incredible support from my family and those I’ve had the pleasure of working with. A few gentlemen who’ve been incredible mentors and whom I’ve learned a lot from are Alex Huynh, Stephen Anderson, Brian Landry and Michael Petelo.” “I am honoured to have shared the nomination with the other Top Five Apprentices. They have also worked just as hard as I have to truly prove they are the best at what they do. They’re the new leaders for our industry and they should be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved so far in their careers.” This was a particularly difficult year for those training in the industry. Covid-19 demands meant that many apprentices had to continue to go to work under extreme pressure and others could not go to work at all. They also lost face to face visits from their Competenz training advisors through this time, coping with only virtual support. In addition, the businesses they worked for also had to endure intense pressures, working under far from ‘business as usual’ circumstances. However, they worked around it and enabled their apprentices to complete the requirements of their learning. They completed their studies at an exceptional level.

ROLL OF HONOUR Former Pride In Print Chair Scott Porter has become the seventh member on the Pride in Print Awards Roll of Honour Current Pride In Print Award Chair Lisa Hegh presented former Chair Scott Porter with the Roll of Honour Award. She said: It is with great pleasure that I announce Scott Porter as the recipient of this Special Recognition Award and welcome him as the seventh member on the Pride in Print Awards Roll of Honour. Scott has been an avid supporter of the Pride in Print Awards across all facets of the programme. Joining the Committee in 2004, Scott became a judge in 2009 and stepped into the role of Chair in 2010, a position he held for eight years. During that time, he oversaw the continued evolution of the Awards and remains committed to ensuring the programme showcases the best of what our industry has to offer. On behalf of the industry, we congratulate Scott on this achievement. Scott joins the Roll of Honour members below.
