FOCUS EXHIBITOR SUMMARY

Australian Companies increase their presence at ProPak Asia 2019: Asia’s number one packaging and processing exhibition An ever-growing number of Australian companies have identified ProPak Asia as the number one exhibition to showcase their products into the ASEAN Region and 2019 will be no exception. This year will see 17 Australian companies exhibiting at ProPak Asia, which is the largest contingent to date.

T

he Australian companies are exhibiting across multiple zones within the show, with the majority located in the Australian Pavilion in the Packaging Zone. Companies in the Australian Pavilion include first-time exhibitors Australis Engineering, Lifecycles and Lantech Australasia and returning companies such as Rhima Australia, Profile Solutions, the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), INOX Australia, Lifecycles, HMPS, Fibre King and APPMA. Additional Australian Companies located outside of the pavilion include Gold Peg, Moisttech/Maselli Asia Pacific, Metz Australia, Heat & Control and tna.

problems and finding innovative engineering solutions that solve inherently difficult materials handling challenges. He explains, “Smart thinking is delivered by our in-house engineering and trade experts meaning customers have direct access to the designers and technicians who are delivering your solution. Nothing is lost in translation and you do not have to outsource capabilities to multiple providers. “Our customers choose Australis Engineering for our expertise in conveying, robotics, automation and materials handling and we have strong expertise in the beverage industry, including soft drinks, juice, water, milk, wine, spirits and brewing. We also understand the food industry, with expertise across raw meat, smallgoods, seafood, dairy and cheese, chocolate, confectionery, snack foods, biscuits, ice cream, fruit, vegetables, packaged foods, frozen food, patisserie, bakery and bread, grains, spices and oils. “Following our visit to the 2018 ProPak Asia exhibition, Australis Engineering realised the potential to exhibit our own equipment in 2019. This year will mark the first-ever international trade show for our company. Following our scoping study

in 2018, we were impressed with the scale and professionalism of ProPak Asia and the strong focus on the food industry,” he said. “Our decision to exhibit this year was also made easier by our new product development process which has resulted in the recent release of our Hygenius washdown conveyor for raw foods such as meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, fruit and vegetables. “Hygenius will be a perfect introduction for Australis Engineering into the burgeoning Asian food machinery market and created the ideal entry point for us to exhibit at ProPak Asia in 2019,” Gustafson said. Hygenius is a step-change in the way conveyors are designed and manufactured for the fresh food market. As members of the European Hygienic Engineering Design Group (EHEDG), Australis have taken the principles of certified, hygienic design and applied them to a food handling conveyor. Hygenius has been designed to minimise cracks and crevices where food or other product can accumulate and create bacterial growth which risks food safety. By removing material from the conveyor, the company says it has produced a conveyor which is very fast and easy to clean. One of the most

impressive design outcomes of Hygenius is how quickly it can be disassembled and reassembled. Unlike other conveyors that can take up to 40 minutes to prepare for cleaning, the toolless design of Hygenius allows it to be disassembled and reassembled in less than two minutes and by people of any skill level. “With the continued growth in the ASEAN middle class creating a demand for fresher and safer or more hygienic food production, Australis are ideally placed to bring our expertise to the ASEAN marketplace and build on our reputation of providing the best, engineered solution to manufacturing and warehousing challenges. “Whilst we have exported our equipment to countries throughout the ASEAN region in the past, it has never been a singular focus and most projects were the result of Australian collaboration with a client wanting the same solution in the offshore facility. However, with our presence at ProPak Asia 2019, we are looking to make longterm inroads to the ASEAN market by introducing our brand and creating a local presence with an initial focus on the fresh food and beverage industries,” Gustafson said.

Lantech Asia Pacific Lantech is widely recognised as the world-leader in stretch wrapping technology. It invented the first rotary stretch wrapping machine and has continually re-engineered the product with new features and performance enhancing technology. Lantech is also an industry leader in robust and efficient case and tray handling equipment, with a worldwide client list. David Fullerton, sales director, Lantech Asia Pacific explains that the company mission is to dramatically reduce the billions of dollars of damage that happens in transit, making sure products get from the factory floor to the retailer’s door in pristine condition. Fullerton says, “Lantech are committed to making effective stretch wrapping easy. We do that with our machines, of course, but we also offer our customers extensive knowledge from our years of experience and more than 70,000 successful application installations. “Based on observations of loading dock operations, and examination of many loads, both those that arrived intact and those that failed, Lantech has developed criteria to define an effectively wrapped pallet load.” For Lantech, a safe-to-ship load must be: • Wrapped with enough www.propack.pro

containment force everywhere on the load • Locked to the pallet with a film cable • Have no long or dragging film tails “Our same principles of simple automation apply when we design our case erecting, tray erecting, case sealing and lidding machines. Our outstanding design features include an ergonomic blank infeed magazine that is power driven, not gravity fed. Cases are precisely formed and held in position while the flaps are folding, which makes a square case. We allow for easy and fast tape changing, and blank size changeover. You will find a wealth of resources on our stand in the Australian Pavilion at ProPak,” Fullerton said.

The results will provide a better understanding of what PIQET can do and highlight their packaging’s environmental hotspots. Grant explains, “PIQET has a global scope and includes data for six Asian regions as well as Europe, the Americas and Oceania. With increased focus on packaging sustainability we see a growth in the use of sustainable design tools across the region. As the PIQET live demonstrations will also undertake real-time sustainability assessments on packaging solutions, we welcome everyone to bring their packaging to the stand for review. “We are really excited to showcase our PIQET packaging software to the ASEAN region as our solution includes the ability to assess impacts of the full packaging supply chain, including all levels of packaging and the logistical impacts from the product supply chain. PIQET also assesses the impacts of product waste including the manufacturing and disposal of damaged or spoiled products in the supply chain. Lifecycles will also be demonstrating new aspects of the tool including product environmental modelling and organisational reporting.” Lifecycles now consults in packaging and product sustainability in Australia, Asia and Europe and provides customised software solutions and training in the packaging and agrifoods sectors.

120, 240 and 1,000 litre bin washers; washing machines custom requirements; washing and drying machines for chocolate and confectionery moulds; and wastewater pre-treatment systems to ensure compliance with local environmental regulations. In general manufacturing, the need for perfectly clean products is becoming increasingly important. Rhima’s technical know-how can be applied to cleaning light engineering parts and components that need to meet high QA criteria. In food manufacturing, high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are essential to comply with HACCP guidelines. Darrem Lam, business development executive South East Asia, Rhima says that the company will be showcasing pot and utensil washers as well as a multipurpose crate washer on their stand this year. He explains, “Rhima are specialists in washing solutions and will be showcasing tray, pot and utensil washers mainly for bakeries. We also have a range of other washers available for different washing purposes, such as crate washers. “We see that there are growth opportunities in the food manufacturing industry in the ASEAN region and Rhima already has an established base in Singapore and machines in Sri Lanka, India, China, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. “Our markets are ever-expanding, and not just in food manufacturing. With the introduction of water based oils and paints we have supplied washing machines to the automotive and general manufacturing industry. “The introduction of recyclable packaging requires adequate cleaning processes. As the single use market is under pressure due to environmental issues, the re-useable market will only expand. Items needs to be cleaned effectively and efficiently. “Washing, or rather dishwashing, is a low interest product. It is not glamorous; it does not add any intricate value to a product’s taste or market allure. Washrooms are mostly wet, misty areas with high staff turnover and little interest from management. Yet companies have been almost forced to close due to hygiene issues. A typical example of this has been Garibaldi Smallgoods and recently Maple Company in Canada who due to swift and decisive action avoided a disaster. “Rhima products can silently and unglamorously save a company from total ruin even when the product is perfect, the balance sheet healthy, 8 ProPack.pro June 2019

Linh Bui, commercial manager, HMPS, says the company is looking forward to exhibiting for the fifth consecutive year in the Australian Pavilion. Bui explains, “HMPS have installed a number of machines across the ASEAN region with customers in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and China. We have a dedicated export team who looks after these customers, their installations and technical requirements. “HMPS believes that our flexible approach to packaging and the scalability of the solutions we offer are of interest and value to Asia. HMPS offers machinery which can pack a large variety of sizes and configurations. All machines are custom designed according to the customer’s requirements. Machines are built to the highest quality standards and the solution is designed and engineered by our team of over 50 qualified staff who include design, mechanical, electrical, electropneumatic and software engineers.”

1. HMPS machines are built to the highest standards

HMPS has developed a modular frame design which allows for benefits on multiple layers. For customers it means flexibility around growth and expansion which allows them to be fit for future. The standardised machine design features a modular format with a smaller, more compact footprint. The electronics are all fitted in an overhead panel which ensures that it is out of the way and only operated by appropriate staff members. The new design allows the customer more flexibility. One of the key design elements is the visibility of the machine. Fault finding is a lot easier as the machine will light up in the area where the problem has occurred. The inner workings are off the ground allowing for ease of access, a safer operating environment for the operator and a clear walkway. A washdown version is available allowing for hygienic operation which is sealed or easily cleaned. Finite Element Analysis was completed on the standard parts and HMPS understand the vibration and harmonics of the machine at various loads. This allows for a frame with less

movement, a safer operating environment and a longevity of the product. Because these studies are already completed, the customer can look forward to a high-quality product manufactured in a short period of time. There is an option to fit machines with HMPSConnect, HMPS’ IoT solutions so that manufacturers even in the ASEAN region have the ability to receive the same amount of technical support; which has become increasingly popular with customers.

performs unlike any other tap on the market. The Precise Pour has features in all areas of the cap which create a user experience like no other. It is tamper evident, anti-surge, variable flow, 180 degree opening action, 360 degree pour, it has anti-binding lugs and has an anti-drip lip.

Company: Radix Nutrition Country: New Zealand Category: Food The Radix Nutrition foil breakfast packaging is simple to use, accessible in any situation, preserves nutrients and there is no food waste. The packaging needed to be durable, yet lightweight as they didn’t want to create problems for their users as a lot of their consumers are marathon runners, athletes, rugby players, endurance long distance runners, cyclists, campers and many other outdoor loving people. These users want to enjoy their athletic and

2

outdoor endeavours and to avoid increases in the weight of their kit so their pouch had to be highly functional, yet add no additional weight.

Company: Ilnam Estate Country: Australia Category: Beverage 8 Kangaroos by Ilnam Estate have been awarded the win for a unique and innovative wine bottle shaped like a kangaroo. In addition, all raw materials were chosen for their ability to be recycled, with extensive thought and consideration in the development of transport packaging to suit the shape of the bottle. The bottle’s unique shape makes it unlikely that it will be thrown away after initial use. It is envisaged that the bottle will be retained and used as a decanter, water bottle or just a curious item on a shelf. The bottle being embossed at the base with the brand name means the brand will live on after the label has gone and the wine consumed. Destined to be extremely successful in the international dutyfree market the family-owned business has developed an outstanding and innovative packaging design.

Company: Lactote Country: Australia Category: Beverage Polatote is both an off-the-shelf supermarket/liquor shop beverage multipack and a portable ice cooler. No longer do you need an Esky style ice container and/or the traditional ice bucket to keep your drinks cold. Polatote has been fully redesigned as a Continued on page 16 June 2019 ProPack.pro 15

Packaging: integrated, versioned, and personalised of technology leadership, digital transformation and operational excellence.” ProPack.pro interviewed Hundsdörfer, and discussed where the packaging market is now, where it is going, and how the company plans to navigate new waters and markets.

Heidelberg’s digitisation strategy transforms company into a 21st Century press manufacturer

T

he Global Financial Crisis (GFC) delivered an opportunity for the big offset press manufacturers to step back and to re-evaluate the companies they needed to become for the future. Heidelberg looked to digital transformation, and invested into the label and packaging sectors to secure the 169-year old company a future as bright as its past. As Heidelberg chief executive officer Rainer Hundsdörfer explains, it was a matter of changing the entire business model in order to migrate the company into a digital future. He says, “We made great progress in transforming Heidelberg into a digital company last year. The strategic focus is on the requirements of our customers and the endeavor to generate value added in terms of efficiency, profitability and success in a dynamically changing world. We have brought together the necessary strategic pillars in the three core areas

Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO, Heidelberg

1. The picture shows the assembly of the Gallus Lablefire at the WieslochWalldorf site.

How does Heidelberg see itself working successfully with printing and packaging companies over the next few years? Customers are at the heart of our business, and our customer-centric approach is continually advanced. We have geared our portfolio towards the growth areas of our industry. It is based on products for prepress, printing and further processing, service, consumables and software solutions, with a strong focus on a digital future. Also and above all, the potential resulting from combining individual product portfolio offerings to create an end-to-end productive solution for customers must be leveraged to increase productivity and profitability for our customers and us. What we do – which is unique on the market – is to create a smart end-to-end system from a data-supported configuration of all equipment, consisting of machinery, software, service and consumables. In March this year our partner Masterwork

became an anchor shareholder with a long-term investment horizon that now holds around 8.5 percent of our shares. Taking the collaboration with Masterwork, which dates back to 2014, to the next level is also designed to open up further potential in the growing packaging printing segment, especially in China – the world’s largest individual market.

Do you see profitable opportunities for traditional printers to enter the package printing and converting market? Each print shop has to do its own business plan and decide what business model will be the best for it. However we will be the partner and our experts from Lifecycle Solutions are able to do the consulting and get all the data for an individual decision. Maybe the print shop has a steady growth rate and is therefore interested or fits into our Subscription model. Then Heidelberg will take care of all the machines, software, consumables and services and the customer is able to fully concentrate on their customers – whether they are in the traditional, packaging or label segment.

With print volumes declining, how does Heidelberg see the future for offset?

1 18 Heidelberg News Asia Pacific

Actually we do not expect declining print volumes in general. The worldwide figures show a stable development of the print production volume (ppv), which is currently €420bn and expected to grow up to €423bn in 2022. Also these figures show a stable development of offset: sheetfed offset contributes with around www.heidelberg.com

HEIDELBERG NEWS ASIA PACIFIC PACKAGING

2 40 per cent to the ppv and this also remains stable, while packaging is the overall growth factor in our industry.

Why digitisation? Why has Heidelberg chosen to go in this direction? Digitisation is the key to stay successful in the future in most industries, and the print media industry is definitely not an exception. Future success is based on the possibility of collecting and utilising data from the solution system used by the customer. This data sheds light on the aspects of value creation and usage. It enables conclusions to be drawn on an ongoing basis about the use of the product portfolio. This in turn paves the way for new billing and business models from manufacturers, the continuous agile further development of the portfolio, and reduced investment risks.

What advantages and benefits will the digitisation strategy give customers? Industrialisation and consolidation in our industry will go on. Therefore, digitisation is not an end in itself, but the most important component in being able to continue to be profitable as a media service provider in the future. By digitisation and integration of all processes our customers get the full overview where they earn and most of all where they lost money. The Smart Print Shop that Heidelberg offers is a perfect interaction of people, machines, materials and processes. With our comprehensive Prinect production workflow, our management information systems for central operations management and the Heidelberg Assistant, which enables www.heidelberg.com

3 2. Smart Print Shop with the Heidelberg Assistant. 3. Driving automation in offset: Prinect Press Center XL 2

digital cooperation with the customer throughout the entire life cycle and assists in productivity enhancement with big data performance analysis, Heidelberg already has a digitisation solution that redefines the foundations of the customer-supplier relationship. Heidelberg has developed its software solutions towards a cloud-based subscription model. The more powerful digitisation becomes, the more productive the value chain of a print provider will be - from prepress to printing and further processing. Digitisation integrates the customers of the printing companies as well as the entire logistics processes with invoicing and delivery. This is all the more important as short runs and frequent job changes are in vogue, and print shop staff should be supported at this level of productivity.

How can this strategy help converters and packaging companies? Overall, there is not a big difference in what digitisation means for a commercial or a packing printer. For both the path is the same. Both have to walk the talk. However, folding carton printing is much more complex than commercial printing, simply because of finishing and issues such as serialisation, colour migration or colour constancy. Therefore, the quest for industrialised and digitised production started early here. Heidelberg is the only manufacturer to implement the integration of offset and digital printing including further processing via the Prinect workflow. This results in new business models for packaging printing such as Supply on Demand or Web to Pack.

Both technologies complement each other perfectly - offset printing scores points for longer print runs, and digital print shows its strength for shorter runs and orders with variable data.

Heidelberg’s offset and digital technologies overlap to complement each other. How does this work in practice? This works quite well and is a unique selling proposition also. We are able to serve the full value chain of our customers with a fully integrated smart solution from pre-press, press to postpress, including workflow, consumables, service and consulting. The customer can choose between offset and digital systems as it is best for their business model and we always help them to find out which investment supports the business best. And in addition with our digital system Primefire 106 we create new market opportunities for our customers. At Print China this year some 1,000 people visited the open house at Heidelberg customer Xianjunlong, where Web to Pack was demonstrated – starting with the web-to-pack platform, then printing on a Primefire 106, and finishing off with the postpress processing systems from Masterworks a partner of Heidelberg. The same customer also bought a new Speedmaster CD 1028+L, assembled in our factory in Qingpu nearby Shanghai.

In packaging, what are the main challenges for Heidelberg? The trends in packaging are declining run lengths, and mass customisation Continued on page 20 Heidelberg News Asia Pacific 19

PACKAGING HEIDELBERG NEWS ASIA PACIFIC Continued from page 19

through personalisation. The challenges are then individualisation and growing cost pressure as well as falling margins. Brand owners want maximum attention for their products at the point of sales through differentiation and embellishments. For all these we do have answers and solutions. With this range, Heidelberg cements its position as the leader in packaging printing and provides answers to current and future requirements in the age of digitisation. We make our customers more productive and therefore also more profitable. It all has to do with productivity. OEEs (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) values of over 50 per cent are absolutely achievable in the long term. This is made possible by lean, intelligently controlled processes that systematically minimise the influence of the operator on productivity and deliver real-time, transparent, and accurate performance data. What is important here is maximum integration without system breaks – starting from the customer all the way to the delivered product. The Prinect modules offer a variety of coordinated solutions here. To increase productivity and reduce process interventions, Heidelberg has been developing the innovative Smart Print Shop with the Push to Stop operating concept since drupa 2016, clearing the way for autonomous printing. Until now over 400 machines are already sold with this new concept. In packaging printing with its high complexity and many spot colors, navigated printing helps the operator to achieve the best possible result within the shortest time.

What can you say on the history of Heidelberg in the Asia Pacific region (ANZ, South East Asia/ASEAN) and where it is heading? In Asia Pacific Heidelberg has for many years been the dominant supplier with a plethora of equipment being installed across the entire region. With many Speedmaster VLF 162 cm presses in Indonesia, China and Japan to high tech Speedmaster XL presses in Australia, Japan and Korea the technology is a clear statement that high productivity, Smart Automation and data workflow is sought after by these mature and emerging markets. These customers value our unparalleled service infrastructure in Asia Pacific and our Saphira consumables which contribute to the

Australia and South East Asia. As you can see, our future-oriented activities in Asia Pacific are well under way.

4

Short term, how do you see print and packaging evolving over the next few years?

4. Growing with Gallus: Sonic Labels, India

high productivity of our equipment. The well-proven Speedmaster CD/CX press line is the largest seller in Asia. In all over 700 printing units are still sold each year in this region including China. With our Gallus presses we have a strong position in important label markets like Australia, India and South East Asia. In Australia we just commissioned two of our Labelfire digital systems for very short-run label jobs. Combine that with the full suite of prepress products and the MK finishing equipment and you have a powerful argument as to why Heidelberg is the partner of choice. This is a very sound basis for further growth in Asia Pacific. Growth markets such as Vietnam, Philippines and Bangladesh have started to value the Heidelberg offerings and this will add to important role Asia-Pacific is playing for Heidelberg. When it comes to Heidelberg’s innovations and new business models our customers in Asia Pacific are as excited as the ones in Europe and America. Take our new Subscription Model for instance. Our first user is a smaller commercial printer in India. The second contract is with a high quality and performance printer in New Zealand. This underlines that the interest in the Subscription business model spreads across all market segments and countries, whether emerging markets or more mature markets. A word about digital printing: Asian printers have always called for flexible and sturdy equipment. The environment in the print shops can differ from what we know from Europe or Australia. This is why you need to offer an extensively tested and reliable digital system in these markets. This stage we have now reached with our Primefire for the packaging segment and our Labelfire for the label segment. We have installed our first 106 Primefire in China and have already installed three Gallus Labelfire presses in

While print volumes are continuing to grow overall in the emerging economies, print service providers in the industrialised nations are facing a highly dynamic and rapidly changing market environment. There are also technological changes. Two-thirds of the ppv is created using sheetfed offset, flexographic and digital printing processes, and the trend is rising. Digital printing has steadily increased its share of the global printing volume to around 15 per cent since 2000, and the trend towards customisation means that it will continue to gain in importance, particularly in industrial applications. Flexo printing, an important technology on the packaging market, continues to benefit from the stable and significant growth in packaging and labels, and holds a share of around 13 per cent of global print volumes. With three per cent packaging print has the fastest growing range, while label printing has the greatest growth potential – mainly in the inkjet area – and commercial printing is developing stably.

What do you see as the three main challenges for the industry and individual companies in the near term and in the long-term? Across all areas of the printing industry, industrialisation and digitisation are driving structural change. To be highly competitive productivity is a key factor. This increases capacity utilisation and, ultimately, the overall effectiveness of the system.

How will Heidelberg help businesses to meet and overcome those challenges? Heidelberg is the leading provider in the industry that can guarantee digitised and industrial packaging production with a defect-free, standardised end result. As an end-to-end system provider of printing presses, consumables, software and consulting we are actively shaping digitalisation in our industry. Digital business models like Subscription will change everything.

achieve a 10% weight reduction compared with the standard 125 grams blueberries plastic labelled clamshell. The punnet is made from renewable unbleached wheat straw and is compostable in industrial compost systems. The punnet is also recyclable, with pulpability testing indicating a 95% fibre yield result and cleverly Kaituna have developed reuse opportunities for the punnet as seedling plant pots. “We are a small family owned company and we have a team of 8 that all worked on this project. We faced a few challenges – we had a perishable product with blueberries that don’t wait for hold-ups. We got through it as a team and we believe it is a great product. We will gladly place this in the trophy cabinet next to the 2019 Rugby World Cup.” – Shane Craig, Punchbowl Packaging. Materials Silver winner: Plantic Technologies for the NEAT Meat Tray. This product uses PLANTIC™ RV high barrier Skin Pack recyclable material to replace their previous nonrecyclable tray made from black HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene). The rPET is sourced from New Zealand and Australian recycled post-consumer PET bottles and in plant PET waste from both the manufacturing of the PLANTIC™ RV tray and other waste PET streams. The addition of the Australasian Recycling logo to the Neat Meats pack will assist consumers to correctly dispose of the packaging. Materials Bronze Winner: Impact International. three tube packaging options to replace fossil fuel plastic tube packaging. The Sarah, Craig and Margorie range are 100% recycled PE and sugar cane PE tubes. The use of recycled PE with the Sarah & Margorie tubes meets the 2025 Targets of including recycled content. Impact International is a registered public drop off point for a global recycling program which provides consumers an additional facility to return and recycle tubes. Materials Special Commendation:

Woolworths. By undertaking a major project in replacing their previous black plastic non-recyclable plastic trays with a renewable sourced pulp/plant-based fibre sourced from unbleached bamboo (40%) and unbleached sugarcane (60%), Woolworths reduced 265 tonnes of plastic annually from their bakery department. This national changeover across all stores for over 50 in-store bakery products represents 75% of all products that were previously packed in the black plastic non-recyclable tray. Materials Special Commendation:

Ranpak for the Thermal Paper Packaging Solution. Ranpak’s packaging is biodegradable, recyclable and renewable and using the Ranpak equipment it provides companies with flexibility to generate packaging as required, pre-sized and pre-cut. This flexibility provides huge space saving opportunities compared to plastic and EPS versions of thermal protection.

Circular Economy Awards Circular Economy Gold Winner: PACT

Group for the New Zealand brand Lewis Road Creamery post-consumer sourced PCR 100% recycled rPET milk

bottle range. The rPET bottles and simple label design stand out on shelf as they are based on the old-style glass milk bottles. This has enabled the boutique brand to achieve a nostalgic feel and a new level of authenticity. The rPET bottles have a sturdy glass like premium feel that captures the brand’s history and credentials. This is the first Australasian milk producer to change to 100% rPET, that is also 100% recyclable. “This has been a very big project for Lewis Road. We are a 20-person team in New Zealand, and we started this project with the aim to make a change and to encourage other dairy companies to do the same. We spoke to Alto and they said they could come up with something and we are proud to be the first milk company to put our milk in bottles that were made from 100 per cent recycled plastic. The line for our campaign is that we love fresh milk, not fresh plastic. We are incredibly proud to have done that and we hope a lot of other companies will join us on that journey as well.” – Lucy Sorensen from Lewis Road Creamery. Circular Economy Special Commendation: Detpak RecycleMe

system. This special commendation recognises Detpak’s initiative and investment in the development of the RecycleMe system, combining circular economy thinking to maintain high material value to address a single use packaging item. In the development of the program, Detpak started at the endmarket (mill) perspective to ensure the acceptance of their innovative cup Continued on page 28 June 2019 ProPack.pro 27

2 2019 Industry Packaging Professional of the Year Award The Industry Packaging Professional of the Year Award is designed to recognise and acknowledge the outstanding achievements and contribution by an individual currently working within the Packaging industry. The judges were looking for an individual who have demonstrated vision and leadership, shows innovation and who is not afraid to take risks. For significant and continued contribution of an Individual to the packaging and Processing industry over a minimum period of 25 years.

The winner is Joe Foster, Co-Founder & Director, OF Packaging.

Joe Foster has had a passion for flexible packaging for most of his life and has run four businesses across four countries over the last forty years. Joe has spent the majority of his career working to not only understand flexible packaging at its core but progress the possibilities of flexible plastics with a continued focus on packaging innovation. Joe Foster’s true legacy has nothing revolves around his resoundingly passionate attitude towards flexible packaging. Joe sees beyond what flexible packaging is, to what it can be, and hopes to create an evolved understanding of flexible packaging and the place it holds in

NZ companies topping awards The PIDAs have grown with the level of interest in the 2019 programme surpassing all expectations and New Zealand companies dominating the top awards giving those companies exclusive access into the prestigious WorldStar Awards programme and recognition on the global stage. The PIDA platform demonstrates a strategic intent to focus Packaging New Zealand’s activities across two workstreams – advocacy and packaging promotion. Clearly successful advocacy is reliant on being able to showcase industry progress in design and innovation which demonstrates it is meeting the demands of what society is looking for in its products. As a platform for showcasing innovative design and processing capability within the packaging industry, the PIDAs are assisting the industry in countering criticisms that businesses are not committed to continued improvement across all aspects of sustainability; financial, social and environmental. This open platform unites the industry around creative and passionate businesses and individuals who are driving the innovation and ingenuity which society is demanding from packaging of the future. The PIDAs are also the platform for awarding the Packaging NZ Annual Scholarship – a clear signal of investment from Packaging New Zealand into the future of the industry and support for individuals who are committed to building successful careers in this dynamic industry.

3 society. His goal is to improve the relationship we have with flexible packaging and plastics, helping inspire new respect for packaging and improving consumer and waste behaviours along the way. “Normally I have quite a lot to say, but I am really overwhelmed. Thanks to the AIP and all of the organisers here tonight,” Foster said when he accepted the award. “Packaging is my life and I know it is very hard to explain. Innovation is what I love and what I dream to do and I try to think outside the box. Sometimes what tends to happen with packaging is the ideas are stopped because we don’t have the ability to manufacture the product or it is too costly. At O F Packaging (previously Omniverse Packaging), we say let’s think outside of the box, let’s come up with these new ideas and let’s figure out a way to make it work in the industry rather than saying no it is not possible, so ladies and gentlemen I am truly overwhelmed to say the least and I thank you so much for this award.”

2019 Finalists: Terry Waterson FAIP – Director, Metalprint Australia Elizabeth Kasell – Chief Executive Officer, RED Group

teasing out ideas, risks and mitigations with a more focused and technical view. Using the knowledge she gains from this course Poonam would like to turn theory into practice that is engaging; inspiring future generations with little awareness of this fascinating sector. For Poonam the journey doesn’t just stop at creating and innovating. She recently read about the importance of women in the manufacturing environment and the part they actively play to grow the success of this sector. Her aspiration is to not only be a part of this movement but to advocate to the up-coming generation of women joining the work force on the viability of a career in packaging technology. “I’d like to thank AIP and Packaging NZ for awarding the scholarship,” Patel said when she accepted the award. “I hope to fulfil the promise I made in my submission. I would like to thank Goodman Fielder and my manager Brian for supporting me as well as my parents and my sisters who are always encouraging me to do better. Adhi is now responsible for training all Nestle packaging technologists in both ARL and PREP tools and he hopes that one day he will become a mentor to new packaging technologists and provide them with the skills required to become a successful and valuable contributor to the packaging industry. “This is really exciting,” Adhiputra said when he accepted the award. “Thank you to the AIP for not only this award but also for recognising all of the amazing work that is being done in the industry. I would like to thank them for providing the platform for us to collaborate and have knowledge sharing. I want to thank everyone at Nestle who have been my mentors – Jacqui, Raymond and Janelle, and without their help I wouldn’t be here today. And finally I want to thank everyone here in the industry, you make the industry so much fun to work with and I really can’t wait to work with you.”
