FAST FACT: According to data collected by UK spa software company, Trybe, 32% of spa bookings are made outside the conventional hours of 9am-5pm.

INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT: CELLULOSE POLYMERS

In cosmetics, cellulose polymers are used for a multitude of reasons, from formula stabilisation to texture enhancement. Cindy Luken, founder of Luk Beautifood, opted to formulate with the natural plant fibre “due to its breathability and hydrophilic qualities, particularly when combined with other botanically derived oils and actives.” Electing to develop and work with a proprietary wood-derived cellulose polymer complex found in Luk’s Lash Nourish Mascara provides users with a natural alternative to traditional mascaras. “Unlike synthetic polymers and fibres which can flake, irritate eyes, and trigger allergies, cellulose is gentle, safe for all-day wear, and improves the health and strength of follicles with each application.”

PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY COMMITS TO STRONG QUARTERLY PRINT ISSUES AND EXPANDS DIGITAL OFFERING The ‘bible of the beauty industry’ for over 25 years continues to innovate with a host of content improvements and design changes to meet readers’ expectations while delivering improved results and new approaches for advertiser partners. Professional Beauty, leading B2B title to the beauty industry, has announced a host of new innovations to the title’s print, digital and social offering to benefit audiences and advertisers. Extensive consultation and collaboration with readers and partners, along with the team’s own strategic insights, shows there is strong demand for ever-greater news and analysis – faster, and where readers want it. “We’re investing heavily in people and technology to deliver the content our audience needs, wherever they need it,” says Professional Beauty’s Managing Director Craig Hawtin-Butcher. “Whether that’s beauty salon owners, their staff or suppliers, that means a continued commitment to big, meaningful print issues, four times a year in January, April, July and October. But it also means innovating what we do digitally – across the website on desktop and mobile, as well as socials.” Print editor Anita Quade commented: “We know readers love the feel of print and give our magazine their full attention, because they know we can help their business succeed while developing their professional life too. “But we’re never complacent about our relationship with readers – like any great relationship, we’re constantly working at it to make it the best it can be. That’s why we’re giving the magazine a full design makeover, launching new features, adding new contributors and continuing to evolve, exactly in line with this dynamic industry. I’m confident readers and our partners are going to love the new direction.”

20 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

Print and digital coverage will be closely integrated in line with the combined print and digital editorial team, with increased interactivity launching in the new print edition. The new quarterly frequency will kick off with an all-new Summer issue for December/January/ February, available mid-January 2024. All subscribers will continue to receive their print entitlements. New print subscribers can sign up online at shop. professionalbeauty.com.au Meanwhile existing digital editor Hannah Gay will be spearheading new online formats, increased video content production, an expansion of the successful webinar series and an extended commitment to breaking relevant news fast, always with considered analysis and deeper dive feature content available online for those long-read occasions. “There is so much opportunity online to deliver for our readers and those brands that choose to support us and the wider industry,” says Hannah Gay. “And the numbers online don’t lie. We’ll try new things, we’ll learn, we’ll give our audience and brands more of what they want,

and which will do most to help them professionally, and help them cut through the noise. I’m really excited about taking the site to the next level.” Hannah and the team will continue to produce twice-weekly e-newsletters direct to inboxes for free. New sign-ups are available via www.professionalbeauty.com. au/subscribe. “The early feedback from advertisers has been outstanding,” says Julie Davidson, National Sales Director for the title, “these changes will allow partnerships across print, digital and social to be competitively priced, rapidly implemented and highly responsive, while we’ve already seriously amped up our reporting capabilities and insights team so we’re able to help brands adjust their campaigns on the fly, to deliver improved ROI. It’s a win-win scenario all round.” Professional Beauty will continue to reach audiences in print, online, via social and faceto-face at the annual BEAUTY & SPA Insiders event, taking place this year at Pier One in Sydney Harbour on Monday 16th October 2023. UNLEASHING THE

POWER OF THE ™ PROFOUND MATRIX : The Revolution in Radiofrequency Microneedling

In recent years, the world of aesthetics has witnessed a remarkable advancement in skin rejuvenation technology. Candela, pioneers in aesthetics innovation, has launched the Profound Matrix™, a cuttingedge, multi-application radiofrequency system set to revolutionise how we approach skin rejuvenation. With its state-of-the-art Dimensional RF™ technology, the Profound Matrix™ has arrived in Australia and New Zealand, offering a comprehensive solution to maintain, correct and restore skin at every stage of the ageing journey. Anita Quade chats to Cosmetic Physician Dr Mary Dingley and Cosmetic Registered Nurse Jodie Fisher.

32 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

The Ultimate Skin Rejuvenation Experience The strength of this extraordinary system lies in its latest radiofrequency (RF) microneedling evolution – the groundbreaking, short-pulse Matrix Pro™ microneedling applicator. This technological wonder is no ordinary tool – it initiates tissue regeneration and remodelling processes that lead to skin tightening and overall improved skin appearance.1,2 It resurfaces the skin, treats wrinkles3, adds volume, and fortifies the skin structure. Enter the Matrix What truly sets the Profound Matrix™ apart is its unique ability to offer multiple depths and energy settings in a single pass, thanks to the utilisation of ultra-thin needles. This innovative approach ensures smoother insertion and increased patient comfort while minimising downtime3 – The perfect choice for those seeking effective treatments without lengthy recovery periods*. Cosmetic Physician Dr Mary Dingley applauds the Profound Matrix™ for its versatility, stating; “The Profound Matrix is more than just one device; the exciting new addition is the RF needling feature, which utilises ultra-fine needles to penetrate the skin and deliver RF energy precisely at up to three different depths within the tissue. This ingenious feature allows us to tailor treatments, giving patients a more comfortable and effective experience, without having to go over areas multiple times, thus minimising any discomfort.”

cover story

The Power of Three Embodying the spirit of versatility, the Profound Matrix™ presents three formidable anti-ageing modalities – the Sublime™, Sublative™ RF, and Matrix Pro™ applicators. Each applicator is thoughtfully designed to target specific skin layers, delivering personalised treatments with optimal outcomes for healthcare clinicians and patients. The Matrix Pro™ Applicator • Restores skin health with fractionated short-pulse RF - This applicator is the centre-piece of the Profound Matrix™ system. With three distinct user-controlled depth and energy settings in a single insertion, the applicator’s ultra-thin microneedles create precise and fractionated zones of thermal injury. This process stimulates the wound healing response and activates fibroblast proliferation, creating new collagen and a remarkable improvement in overall skin appearance and texture.6,7 With glowing reviews from both patients and professionals, the Profound Matrix™ is making waves in the world of aesthetics. Clients are praising the minimal downtime for microneedling and expressing their satisfaction with the tightening and refined skin achieved through this revolutionary treatment. The Sublative™ Applicator • Corrects skin health by harnessing fractional bipolar RF energy in a non-invasive manner, stimulating fibroblast proliferation and resulting in dermal remodelling.4,5 • This innovative approach stimulates new collagen growth, leading to smoother skin and a reduction in facial wrinkles.

• Sublative RF applicators are also intended for ablation and resurfacing of the skin including pore size and superficial pigmentation reduction and textural improvements, striae and treatment of acne scars. • The Thermal Biological Effects of Sublative RF: ▸ Ablation (Evaporation) ~80 -100°C, when the pin tips are in direct contact with the skin, the very high heat at the contact point causes ablation of the epidermis at that contact point ▸ Coagulation (Necrosis) ~50 - 80°C – the lower temperature in the dermis, below and around the ablation zone, causes the destruction of chemical bonds, protein denaturation and metabolic effects resulting in skin tightening. ▸ Heating (Stimulation) ~40 - 50°C – below and around the coagulation zone the dermis is heated to a lower point where the heat stimulates collagenases without tissue destruction. The Sublime™ Applicator • Helps to maintain skin health using infrared light and bipolar RF, targeting both superficial and deep dermis layers with precision • With water and blood vessels being all over the dermis, they are heated up by IR and RF and conduct heat to the collagen fibres.4.5, 6 • In order for it to be homogeneous, the heating should be spread all over rather than focused • It is also effective in wrinkle treatment based on collagen shrinkage and denaturation all over the dermis – both superficial and deep.

“The Profound Matrix is more than just one device; the exciting new addition is the RF needling feature, which utilises ultra-fine needles to penetrate the skin and deliver RF energy precisely at up to three different depths within the tissue.”

EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS, MINIMAL DOWNTIME

Plus, the Ergonomic Handpiece What makes the Ergonomic Handpiece so useable is its pistol shape, making it easier to use and maneuver around the treatment area, specifically the neck and submental area. In comparison, other non-Candela devices often feature a long cylindrical “wand” shaped handpiece, making it tricky to get certain angles under the chin. Furthermore, it features a square protruding tip in the centre end of the handpiece where the needles fire out. This allows for great visualisation as you place it onto the skin for subsequent pulses, making the 50-80% overlap easier to gauge. Science. Results. Trust. The technical brilliance of the Profound Matrix™ opens up a world of possibilities in skin rejuvenation, offering personalised and comfortable treatments that produce remarkable outcomes time after time. Armed with Depth Intelligence™ – real-time impedance monitoring, empowering users with unparalleled control over the spatial distribution of thermally affected micro-zones within the tissue. With the ability to treat up to three different cutaneous layers in one microneedle insertion, the Profound Matrix™ reduces treatment time, minimises epidermal disruption, and ensures patient comfort.3 Patient comfort and safety are of paramount importance in every aesthetic procedure. The Matrix Pro™ Applicator takes the lead in this regard, featuring a single-use, disposable cartridge tip with 49 ultra-thin semi-insulated micro-electrode chamfered needles. Engineered with precision, these German-designed microneedles have a diameter of only 0.16 mm (34 gauge), ensuring a gentle launch speed that minimises epidermal trauma and discomfort, ensuring patients have a comfortable experience. Dr. Mary Dingley states that; “The actual needles used by the device are the finest currently available, which means that treatment is far more comfortable for patients.”

Real-Time Impedance Measurement The Matrix Pro stands apart due to its distinctive feature – constant feedback. Unlike non-Candela devices that often don’t incorporate impedance feedback, the Matrix Pro features constant feedback dynamically calculates impedance changes and adjusts pulse duration between 10ms to 100ms to precisely administer the chosen energy output, ensuring accurate delivery. Impedance stands as the opposition within tissues to the passage of RF energy during delivery. RF denotes a high-frequency alternating current, where voltage divided by current = resistance. This factor can be influenced by variables such as Skin Quality, Skin Moisture, Skin Temperature, microcirculation of blood flow, and the presence of protein fibres that conduct the current. Hindrances in the path can impede the flow, leading to uneven electron exchange. When temperatures rise and the heat intensifies, resistance to current weakens, subsequently reducing impedance. Comparatively, subcutaneous tissue containing fewer connective fibres encounters less resistance in current flow, thereby resulting in variable impedance. The duration of each pulse of the Profound Matrix™ is tailored within a range of 10ms to 100ms, contingent on tissue impedance. Dr Mary Dingley on operating the Profound Matrix; “We use topical anaesthetic for our patients and remove this, section by section, as the treatment progresses. We set the parameters according to the skin thickness and what we’re trying to achieve – so in thick areas, we can use up to three levels and in thin areas, we may only use one level. It’s quite easy to learn how to select for different areas and establish the parameters you wish to use.” Patient and Clinic Satisfaction The Profound Matrix™ enhances the overall patient experience at Dr Mary Dingley’s clinic; “The initial reaction from patients is that the treatment was far more comfortable than they were expecting, with minimal recovery time. They have all been pleased with their initial results and are looking forward to having more treatments!”

Witnessing everyone achieve a beautiful refinement in the texture of their skin is truly rewarding. Our patients feel and see the difference, and they eagerly commit to the three treatments because the outcomes are remarkable. One of the best features of the Profound Matrix is its sleek and mobile design. It takes up minimal room in our clinic and is incredibly easy to use. Plus, its quiet operation is an added bonus.” Service and Support Candela’s commitment to excellence extends beyond state-of-theart technology, as they provide unwavering support to clinicians using the Profound Matrix™. Through comprehensive training, protocols, and continuous assistance, they ensure a smooth and successful integration of this cutting-edge technology into clinics. Nurse Jodie was satisfied with the level of Candela’s support when purchasing the Profound Matrix™ stating that; “Candela’s support is incredible. They’ve sent a trainer to spend the day with us for education on the treatments and the protocols and physically performing the treatments on models. Very thorough and supportive. They are always at the end of the phone if we need help or have questions. We love the support we get from the team.” The future of skin rejuvenation is here The Profound Matrix™ has raised the bar for skin rejuvenation, providing an all-encompassing solution for maintaining,

correcting, and restoring skin at every stage of ageing. The amalgamation of Dimensional RF™ technology together with the Matrix Pro™ Applicator brings forth a powerful tool that resurfaces, treats wrinkles, adds volume, and fortifies the skin structure, delivering remarkable results that leave patients satisfied and confident. With three versatile applicators – the Sublime™, Sublative™ RF, and Matrix Pro™ – the Profound Matrix™ caters to individual needs, ensuring personalised and effective treatments. The existence of intact areas between the targeted areas reduces recovery time and mitigates risks.8 Patients and clinicians alike praise the minimal downtime, comfort, and impressive outcomes achieved through this advanced technology. Candela’s unwavering support and comprehensive training further enhance the experience, enabling clinicians to seamlessly integrate the Profound Matrix™ into their clinics and offer exceptional service to their patients. BUILDING THE RIGHT FOUNDATION VICTORIA CURTIS “Expect to see a new foundation trend coming through this spring/summer. It’s called ‘Cloud Skin’ and it’s definitely IN! It’s the new soft focus makeup look sweeping social media and unlike many viral makeup trends, the best part about this is, it’s actually wearable! Cloud skin is a mixture of matte and dewy and appears weightless and soft like a cloud. Cloud Skin is achieved by layering a mattifying primer under your matte foundation and adding in an illuminator to create that soft, dreamy, lit from within effect. Setting powder is used lightly on the T-zone and under eye areas to create a blurring effect while cheekbones are highlighted to add radiance and glow.” Founder Curtis Collection www.curtiscollection.com.au

DRAW A LINE MBI JESSICA COSMETICS “Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023 has brought a new wave of glamour to the beauty world, with the Italians showing us how it’s done. The runways were a feast for the eyes, with bold and daring makeup looks taking centre stage after several seasons of minimal cosmetics. Whether you’re a fan of bold lips or dramatic eyes, there was no shortage of inspiration. Pops of pink graced many lips, from Barbie-level brightness to softer dusty rose hues. For those who prefer a more subtle look, lip oils provide a pretty wash of colour that’s still on-trend. Soft smoky eyes were also popular, with black, brown, or grey shadow used to enhance the eyes and create that elegant-meets-sexy vibe that the Italians do so well. But it wasn’t all about subtlety - bigger and bolder eyeliner options were also seen on the runways. While a sleek feline flick will always be a classic beauty look, Milan designers and makeup artists raised the bar with bold, graphic liner that made a statement. A sultry eye isn’t complete without plenty of kohl, and a pigment pot and short dense liner brush will help you achieve these more graphic looks at home. These trends make a strong case for experimental and statement-making glamour, bringing a new wave of excitement to the beauty world. So go ahead and experiment - the Italians have shown us how it’s done!” Rose Balam, Business Development & Education Manager www.jessicacosmetics.com.au

SPRING’S BLOOMING BRIGHTS “Spending two months abroad, catering to clients while enjoying the European spring between Madrid and Paris, I couldn’t help but notice a prevailing trend in the European beauty scene. Almost everyone seems to be embracing the fresh, rosy lip blush that imparts a youthful and plump appearance. This simple two-hour procedure sets you up for the next two and a half years. European women prioritize convenience, often looking effortlessly stylish while walking everywhere. They’ve discovered this straightforward lip enhancement method that suits the busy, stylish, and time-conscious lifestyle perfectly. Even older women benefit from the color and shape correction, achieving the illusion of fuller lips and a slightly more youthful appearance. It’s something I’ve noticed Sydney women are starting to catch onto as well. Lip blush is thriving in Paris, and I’m thrilled to introduce this touch of pink to the Sydney spring. It’s the ideal solution for those who want to simplify their beauty routine and no longer have time for meticulous shaping and lining—just add gloss for a polished look. Lip Blush, also known as Lip Tint, is a form of semipermanent makeup that enhances the natural lip color. It corrects issues like lost lip outlines, uneven pigmentation, and shape asymmetry. This procedure not only improves the shape of the lips but also provides definition and the illusion of fullness. The subtle enhancement revitalizes the lips, giving them a more vibrant and youthful appearance. In some cases, it can also address medical concerns such as loss of border, color, and scars, though results may vary on a caseby-case basis.” Noush Owner Eye Couture Instagram: noush_eyecouture

SKIN SLUGGING: WHY IS THIS TRENDING? By Paul Fister, B.Bus (Mktg), Dip. Form. Chem., Member ASCC

Skin Slugging is a term that comes from K-Beauty (Korean Beauty). It involves coating the skin with a layer of Vaseline, petroleum jelly or the like before going to bed. It acts to serve as a response to the common problem of dehydration in skin. The idea of skin slugging is to apply a thick layer of petrolatum onto the skin at bed time. This will form an occlusive layer, prevent moisture loss during the night and therefore increase hydration levels in the skin. It is an extreme measure. According to K-Beauty, moisture in the skin is paramount. And while we agree, we do see that skin slugging in this way is not only unnecessary, but in fact potentially damaging to the skin (or at the very least, counterproductive). SKIN HYDRATION AND THE 15% RULE It’s true that the right level of hydration in the epidermis is of vital importance. It is also true that dehydration of the skin is a common problem. We have been teaching our clients for over 20 years that the moisture content in the stratum corneum should be 15% at minimum. Below 15%, we see various common symptoms that get progressively worse as the level of dehydration increases. We categorise such symptoms as: 1. Dehydrated skin 2. Tight skin 3. Rough skin 4. Scaly skin 5. And finally, xerosis. Symptoms that go hand-in-hand with the above are diffused redness, rashes, perioral dermatitis, itching and tingling. Sensitivity is another one experienced by a large percentage of the population. We agree on the concept that skin hydration is important for skin health, so why do we disagree with slugging? The answer is found in careful study of the skin and in the name given to its natural barrier. It is the ‘hydro-lipidic barrier’, not the ‘lipidic barrier’. Our skin’s natural barrier is a combination of water (hydro) and sebum (lipid/oils). It also contains some chemicals called NMFs (Natural Moisturising Factors). In contrast to slugging, our skin barrier is not occlusive. In fact, the full term for this barrier is ‘hydro-lipidic permeability barrier’. For our skin to be healthy it must be protected by a ‘permeable’ barrier. It must be able to exchange water vapour, oxygen and carbon dioxide with the environment. Skin slugging – covering the skin with a thick layer consisting of lipids – stops

60 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

this exchange. This will generate proinflammatory reactive oxygen species (free radicals) and increased microbial growth. [1] OMNIDERM HAVE BEEN OFFERING A SUPERIOR ALTERNATIVE TO SKIN SLUGGING SINCE 1996 Scientists and dermatologists in Germany and Italy have established in clinical trials that oil-based skincare creams ensure superior hydration of the skin. [2] These reverse emulsions are able to ensure excellent levels of skin hydration for 12 hours or longer. Water-based skincare creams, serums and the like are good delivery vehicles for actives, but they lack the hydration potential of oil-based creams. This is why we are so often seeing the above symptoms caused by a lack of moisture in the skin. A well formulated oil-based cream mimics the skin’s hydro-lipidic barrier. It works on three levels. It will restrict evaporation of precious water from the skin to natural, healthy levels. It is not occlusive – it allows the exchange of water vapour, oxygen and carbon dioxide just like the intact hydrolipidic permeability barrier does. A light oil-based cream is the perfect repair and support medium for barrier impaired skin. Such a cream contains humectants that help to bind moisture in the stratum corneum. Humectants include biomimetic substances such as glycerine, lactates, urea, sodium PCA, hydrolysed collagen, and

hyaluronic acid. Generally a small selection of these actives is used, as preferred and chosen by the formulating chemist. A third category of ingredients found in a well-formulated skincare cream are emollients. These impart softness and smoothness to the skin. Non-occlusive emollients include jojoba oil, glyceryl, certain stearates and castor oil. Suppliers of jojoba oil claim that it is remarkably similar to human sebum. It is therefore a very beneficial biomimetic ingredient. Finally, well hydrated skin is highly receptive to scientifically proven active ingredients. The chemist will add them to their formulation based on the skin condition or concern they are looking to target. These are the reasons that we refer to our Dr. Spiller creams as ‘biomimetic’. They are oil-based. They mimic both the water retention capacity and the permeability of the skin’s natural barrier. The formulations include humectants and biomimetic NMF substances that optimise skin hydration. (Note the word ‘optimise’ – we do not aim to ‘maximise’ because that would be equally undesirable as is dehydrated skin. Maximise is what skin slugging does and it is not a natural condition of healthy skin). Message from the author: “Our greatest blessing today is the great variety of choices we have. Good choices are based on good information. You now have a new point of view about skin slugging that will better inform your choice in the care of your skin. On another note, the industry has certainly come full circle. Experienced industry practitioners will remember the days when petrolatum and other hydrocarbons such as mineral oil were maligned to the extent that many popular brands eliminated them from their INCI listing. Now they are back, not in small percentages as in the past but as 100% Petroleum Jelly or other paraffin-like material. This approach was not taken in the days of mineral oils and would have been unthinkable even before the trend away from hydrocarbons got under way. Whilst mineral oil, used in small percentages, can be beneficial to the skin we are surprised to see the enthusiastic uptake of petrolatum, this hitherto unloved lipid ingredient.” Dr. Spiller is distributed in Australia by OmniDerm Pty. Navigating through Stagnation:

5 STRATEGIES TO REINVIGORATE YOUR BEAUTY BUSINESS Running a beauty business can be a labyrinth of challenges and triumphs. Like any business, there can be times when the thrill and excitement of initial success can fade into an expanse of sluggishness, stagnating growth and suppressing revenues. Millionaire Coach Andy Heyne reveals his top five tips on how to achieve your goals. I REMEMBER a time our clinic at the start, despite its roaring initial success, plateaued at an annual revenue of just over $1M, a direct reflection of our dwindling passion for our dream. The story could have ended there, a narrative of early success petering out into disappointment. However, we chose to reignite our passion at the point in time, resulting in a sparking $286K growth in revenue within a year. The three years since then have been full growth. Add this tips to your business checklist. 1. Reignite Your Passion Reigniting passion begins as an intimate journey of soul-searching. Explore the very essence of what motivated you to start your beauty business. Was it to create an improved and empowered lifestyle for your family? To create a legacy of excellent service in the beauty industry? Or perhaps, to relentlessly chase the best version of yourself every day? Sometimes, businesses stagnate not because the dream is unattainable, but because the vision that drove the dream is forgotten. When you rekindle the excitement that once fuelled your business, you begin to breathe fresh life into it. Start by acknowledging your initial dreams, and you’ll find the tenacity to overcome frustrations and adversities. 2. Set Your Compass: Mission, Vision, and Core Values Any sailor will tell you: a ship without a compass is at the mercy of the sea. Likewise, a business widowed of a clear mission, vision, and core values, struggles aimlessly. This indispensable trio navigates your business through challenges,

conserves resources, and encourages unity among your team. A mission statement defines the everyday outcomes of your business, the vision illustrates its future impact, and the core values guide your decision-making processes. By defining these, you and your team will be aligned towards the same goals, establishing a pathway to success. 3. Decode Your Financials Every number in your financial statements is a piece of a larger puzzle. Understanding them - especially your break-even point and profitability -is crucial. It unveils vital insights like a complicated service menu, pricing inaccuracies (lack of profitability by being too competitive), or the necessity to update your services and products to meet the ‘TRUE’ needs of your clients. Financials are not mere statistics but encapsulate fundamental aspects of your business. With a solid understanding of them, you can make informed decisions, guiding your business towards prosperity. Here is a QR code to download our free training and downloads we have on finance calculators to help you assist you with this:

4. Prioritise Personal and Professional Development The symbiosis between success and personal and professional development is unmistakable. By honing your leadership, communication, and sales skills, you can

stimulate growth, enhance revenues, attract a fresh client base, and foster a gratifying work environment. The rewards of development spill over into your role as a leader for your team, clients, family, and community. Look at your daily movements, capture your tasks and how you spend your time, make it a ‘do-or-die’ habit to block out personal and professional development. It is simply not possible for you to be the best version of yourself if you do not allow time for yourself. 5. Master the Art of Sales and Clientele Growth In the beauty industry, sales leadership is less about being pushy and more about adding value, refining communication, and exceeding client expectations. These factors ignite word-of-mouth referrals and expand your client base. Regardless of whether you’re a solopreneur or part of a larger team, continuously honing your sales skills is imperative. A high-performing therapist in our clinic, for instance, significantly contributes to our revenue without resorting to high-pressure sales tactics. Breathing new life into your beauty business doesn’t happen overnight. It calls for reigniting your passion, establishing a robust mission, vision, and core values, deciphering your financials, emphasizing personal and professional development, and mastering sales and clientele growth. Following these steps will incrementally improve your business, edging you closer to your aspired outcomes. Remember, the journey may be tough, but the view from the top is always worth it. Empowering women through lashes The team pursued their business to provide premium products that enhance natural

beauty by strengthening confidence to empower women. The girls said, “Throughout our lives, we faced the common struggle of ineffective, overpriced, harsh chemically enhanced beauty products. We set out to create a range of products that we were assured would provide results without any risk of irritation or damage to our health. We personally have fallen in love with our products and hope you do too.” Founded by three best friends who have a passion for the beauty industry and a love for healthy long lashes. The trio pride

themselves on delivering premium natural beauty products, with proven scientific benefits and only the best ingredients. Challenges running a beauty business As we know, being a woman in business can present its fair share of challenges, especially as young entrepreneurs establishing a beauty brand in an already saturated industry. Emma, Lauren and Jess shared, “We have been faced with a lot of doubt and scepticism on our abilities to lead and run a company. We love to work hard and prove people wrong to help break the stigma and create more opportunities for women following in our path. We are proud of what we have created as a fully

female-founded business and hope to inspire more women to break into the entrepreneurial space.” They went on to say, “One of the biggest challenges we have faced running a beauty business would be developing premium, effective products that are different to what’s already on the market. We pride ourselves on being innovative and have created a high standard for the products we produce for our customers. New products can take up to 12 months to perfect and the trailing process is often long with many samples being created before we have the perfect formula.” As the proverbial saying goes, it is a general rule not to enter into business ventures with close friends or family members, as personal relationships could become strained due to the complexities and challenges that can arise in a business context. However, the three best friends feel that their beauty business has brought them closer together. “We are very lucky to be super aligned on the vision of our brand, we always joke

that we are merging into one person as our brains come up with the same ideas and thoughts. Of course, we will occasionally disagree on what shade of pink we like best and use the opinions of others in our team and our close friends and family as a sounding board for these decisions. Ultimately we all want what’s best for the brand so majority rules is our go-to solution,” the girls said. Brand achievements and plans Lash Therapy Australia products currently stocked in beauty salons around Australia and is sold online and on Amazon. The brand also has plans to expand worldwide. “Our business growth has been exponential not only in sales and customers but in opportunities and experiences. We went from making $2,000 a month in sales to now over $1,000,000 a month in sales. Our business has been sent to over 140 countries worldwide and we turned a $4,000 investment each into over 12 million in just over two years,” the girls proudly said.

“We are proud of what we have created as a fully female-founded business and hope to inspire more women to break into the entrepreneurial space.”

They continued to say, “After our rapid growth, we secured a retail deal with Costco and are stocked Australia and New Zealandwide. We have also launched onto Amazon in the U.S. and were featured on a billboard in Times Square New York.” Proving to be the Aussie business that could, the girls are keen to continue their growth. With thousands of reviews for their product across their website and social media, the brand’s customers are eager to show their before and after results. “Our customers and clients have given us amazing feedback about all our products over the years. Our customer demographic is mostly females aged between 13 to 65 years old and we continue to have a strong brand presence on all social media platforms and we receive thousands of reviews from customers,” the trio said. Having all come from very different backgrounds, Emma, Lauren and Jess did not envision the success and lives they are currently leading, but they said, “We are so grateful for the journey we have been on and where we are today. We all dreamed of a life where we worked for ourselves, and coming from families who all are quite entrepreneurial the prospect of owning our own business was always something discussed.” Connecting with the beauty industry Collectively Emma, Lauren and Jess say they love to network with other women in the industry from when they first launched. They said, “we looked up to so many [women in the industry], that we then built many relationships with. Meeting up with other women in business allows us to all share our highs and lows and enables us to give advice on issues around the business that one another has learned from. We love bringing other women in business up and supporting them with tips as much as they do with us. It’s a nice community we have built over the last few years.” The girls plan to continue to expand on their Aussie lead business and continue to inspire young female entrepreneurs in the industry. They feel “the sky is the limit” and they plan to continue smashing goals, staying persistent and passionate without losing momentum. “We fell into starting a business together and now we will never look back. Surround yourself with the right people and look up to mentors that can guide you and nothing will be impossible,” they said. n

THE POWER OF AT HOME DEVICES

Beauty technology has come a long way and these days treatments with devices are not only the domain of the clinic. Clients are being encouraged to up their personal beauty journey in between appointments to keep up the glowing results. Anita Quade chats to some device leaders about their powerful products delivering results in the privacy of your own home.

THE LED MASK

“The mask offers several significant benefits for users, most importantly it helps our customers use salon-grade technology that is 100% safe and pain-free from the comfort of their homes. We developed the mask following customer feedback that they were more likely to keep up with a beauty regime if it was simple so we designed it with just one button and an autotimer for ease of use. Claim to fame: The CurrentBody LED mask proves that superheroes do wear masks and has been named as winner of the world’s most powerful and effective on the market by independent testing. It was demonstrated to be 31 percent more powerful than other LED masks with 97 percent participants agreeing their skin looked and felt fresher after using the FDA approved device. It has reached cult status thanks to celebrities such as Trinny

68 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

Woodal, Halle Berry, Kourtney Kardashian and Renee Zellweger revealing the benefits of using this device for 10 minutes a day a couple of days per week for radiant skin. CurrentBody CEO Laurence Newman reveals the real benefits of home care. The CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask has been named the world’s most powerful and effective LED Mask on the market – tell us about that? “The CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask has been recognised as the world’s most powerful and effective LED mask on the market through independent testing. This recognition comes from a comprehensive evaluation that compared four factors that a customer should consider when buying a LED mask including power, coverage, precision and duration. The testing demonstrated that the CurrentBody skin LED Light Therapy Mask is 31% more

powerful than other leading at-home LED masks and was also proven to offer the best coverage from the 132 LEDs with pillow technology™, which diffuses the light to maximise skin coverage.” What gives this mask cult status given there are many LED masks on the market? “It’s been loved from inception and used by celebrities including beauty icons Trinny Woodall and Sydney Sweeney, and now that it’s been proven to be the best in the market, it’s likely to gain even more popularity.” What are some of its biggest benefits? “The mask offers several significant benefits for users, most importantly it helps our customers use salon-grade technology that is 100% safe and pain-free from the comfort of their homes. We developed the mask following customer feedback that they were more likely to keep up with a beauty regime if it was simple so we designed it with just one button and an auto-timer for ease of use. Users can watch TV or read while using the mask as it’s hands-free and non-intrusive with no downtime. It’s clinically proven to reduce wrinkles by 35% in just four weeks, brightens and balances the skin with 97% of users experiencing fresher-looking skin and reduces redness, rosacea and broken capillaries by addressing inflammation and sensitive skin symptoms.” How powerful are At Home LED masks in improving skin in comparison to an in salon treatment? “First of all, it’s important to understand clinic LED devices. The most powerful one in the world is the Dermalux Triwave. This device costs around $50,000, has to be used by trained professionals and a single treatment costs around $150, so it would be foolish to suggest anything that is $515 would offer the same power and strength. Whilst we don’t suggest we can replace clinic, the mask can very effectively be used in between salon treatments to amplify

technology

results. At-home daily use also means a cumulative effect over time that will emulate the salon experience and results.” Tell us what the feedback has been like in the market? “Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with 92% of customers stating they would recommend the product to a friend. Independent testing demonstrated that 97% of participants agreed that their skin looked younger and felt fresher after using the CurrentBody. Users reported visible improvements in various skincare concerns including reductions in wrinkles, and brighter, smoother and softer skin.”

RADIO FREQUENCY

The CurrentBody Skin RF Radio Frequency Skin Tightening Device is the first in the market to feature new and unique skin-sensing technology tell us how this was developed? “Conventional radio frequency devices supply a constant voltage of RF to the skin but from our years of experience in the device sector, we knew that our customers would have varying degrees of resistance as everyone’s skin is different. We developed our unique SkinSense™, technology, which is built into the electrodes themselves in two independent temperature sensors to monitor the exact temperature of the skin every 0.004 seconds. The device then cleverly adjusts the energy output accordingly to maintain a constant power. This allows the device to maintain its effectiveness at the optimum temperature whilst ensuring it never exceeds the safety level.” Why is Radio Frequency such a popular treatment both in salon and for At Home Devices? “Radiofrequency is a popular treatment both in salons and for at-home devices due to its ability to provide effective skin tightening and rejuvenation results. Our RF device utilises bipolar radio frequency waves that penetrate the dermis, where collagen is formed. The skin’s resistance to these waves generates heat, which promotes better circulation and immediate collagen production. This results in a reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin and an overall brighter and more youthful complexion.”

What are the advantages of using this device at home? “There are many advantages to using radiofrequency devices at home including the following: • Convenience: treatments can be done in your own time, without the need to schedule appointments at a salon or clinic. This also reduces time spent organising and travelling to appointments. • Saving: at-home devices can provide similar results to professional treatments at a fraction of the cost over time. • Consistency: Regular use can be easier to maintain when the device is readily available at home. Consistent use will also deliver better results sooner.” What has the feedback been like on the market? “The CurrentBody skin Radio Frequency Device is 33% more effective than RF competitors and it only takes one treatment to see results. After using the device over 91% of users noticed an overall improvement in their skin with fine lines and wrinkles visibly reduced and brighter and more radiant skin. We’ve also run extensive testing with our customer panel with some incredible before/afters. (could insert Elena slide from this presentation here).” How effective is it in comparison to an in salon treatment with RF? “CurrentBody’s RF device offers our customers results in 50% less time than other RF devices available in the market. The market-first SkinSense™ technology means the device is also 33% more effective and only requires one treatment per week to see instant results.”

POUT PERFECTION WITH THE LIP PERFECTOR The LED Lip Perfector is an industry-first and provides three minute treatments that help smooth fine lines and wrinkles around the lip area to reveal fuller, smoother and plumper lips. Tell us how this was developed? “This device was all about customer feedback! We knew we had marketing leading LED technology that was proven

and loved by globally so we asked our dedicated customer panel what they would like to see from us next. Lip lines and lip plumping came up as a common concern and so the Lip Perfector was created.” What specific concerns does this three minute perfector address? “The CurrentBody Skin LED Lip Perfector uses four different LED wavelengths with each providing a different benefit to the lips. The red and deep red wavelengths penetrate the lower layers of the skin and provide vital nutrients for cell renewal. The amber and infrared light supercharges cell renewal and improves circulation. The combination of the four wavelengths works together to stimulate the production of collagen, plump the lip area to lift feather lines, smoker’s lines, smile lines, and sad lines, increase fullness and even out lip tone.” Is this the first of its kind in the market? “The CurrentBody LED Lip Perfector was the first in the market to specifically target the lip area. Other LED devices that target the whole face don’t target specific concerns for the lip area.” How long do the results last? “The results will depend on the individual and their lifestyle. Many users see instant results and with consistent use, you can experience longer-lasting results.” Is this a great alternative to lip filler? “It’s a great way to amplify results, with some customers saying their lips are fuller and more plump after using the Lip Perfector. The CurrentBody LED Lip Perfector works to boost your own natural collagen and can help your lip fillers look good for longer.”

This has been an exciting and groundbreaking launch for us as we are bringing what was once a salon-only rejuvenating technology, into the home for the first time!” What is the drawcard of being able to use a device such as Stop VX GOLD 2 at home? “The popularity of at-home RF devices has soared. People are drawn to these devices because they offer professional-grade skin tightening and rejuvenation results, from the comfort of their own homes. Pollogen are the global leaders in Radio Frequency, so we are incredibly excited to deliver their technology to those Australians who want to maintain their results in-between their regular professional treatments or can’t get into salon as often as they would like.” How effective are these devices compared to an in-salon treatment? “With regular use and consistency, you will start to see noticeable results immediately and long-lasting results over time when using the TriPollar STOP Vx GOLD 2. It is recommended you use the device two to three times per week, for a period of six to eight weeks, for optimal results. Like most at-home and professional comparisons you can expect superior and faster results with professional treatments. In-salon devices usually deliver a stronger treatment as they are more powerful and operated by a trained professional.”

70 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

What are the major skin improvements with Stop Vx GOLD 2? “The clinically proven* results include lifted and toned facial features, such as the jawline contour and a refreshed complexion overall. Expect plump and tightened skin and a reduction in wrinkles. This is all achieved safely and pain free with zero downtime.” Tell us about the ongoing maintenance in the skincare regime? “To begin with, we recommend using the TriPollar STOP Vx GOLD 2 two to three times per week, for a period of six to eight weeks, for optimal results. The average treatment time is 20 minutes based on four minutes per facial area - left cheek (RF mode), right cheek (RF mode), forehead (RF mode), right jawline (DMA mode), left jawline (DMA mode). To maintain these results, we recommend that you use the device at least twice a week thereafter.” What has the reaction been like to the launch of these devices on the market in Australia? “Amazing! The popularity of maintaining great skin with at-home devices has dramatically risen in the past few years (thanks TikTok & Instagram). Due to such visible results and impressive before and afters, these devices have been highly sought-after and are consistently gaining traction. While they will not replace the demand for professional treatments, they do provide our salon partners the opportunity to offer an at-home maintenance program in between salon visits (just as they would when prescribing an at-home skincare regime). How does it fit into a client’s salon regime – is this a great maintenance program in between visits? “TriPollar’s range of at-home RF devices are the perfect addition for those clients who want to maintain results in between professional treatments, or for those who can’t make it to the salon as often as they would like. TriPollar’s devices can be added to any at-home self-care routine alongside any/ all products.” Why is RF so popular? “RF has become a popular treatment option due to its ability to restore volume, plump and tighten the skin and reduce wrinkles in a non-invasive way! There is no-downtime, results are visibly noticeable, plus it is a

treatment that is suitable for everyone, even those with highly sensitive skin.” Q&A with Lisa Williams, Co-Founder & General Manager, Professional Beauty Solutions. Why did you choose to take on TriPollar? “TriPollar is manufactured by Pollogen - a pioneer in the medical laser industry (and owned by the world’s largest medical laser company). As Professional Beauty Solutions (PBS) are the Australian distributors of Pollogen, we knew we were more than ready to launch this industry leading technology direct to the ever-astute Aussie beauty consumer when the opportunity presented itself to us. The Australian at-home beauty market is booming, making it an exciting space to launch a game-changing range like this. TriPollar provides a completely safe and clinically effective at-home treatment, that was once only found in salons and is currently sold in more than 100 countries worldwide.” How did you discover this brand from Israel? “Pollogen (who manufacture TriPollar) also manufacture in-salon devices, the Geneo, the Divine Pro and the Maximus – which are already distributed by us here at Professional Beauty Solutions, so it was a natural progression to provide an at-home offering, too.” Can you tell us if you have any more plans to extend your launch of At Home Devices? “Yes – watch this space! At-home devices are not a replacement, nor will they ever replace professional treatments in a salon or clinic setting, but we see this offering as a complimentary addition to the clients’ skincare routine, allowing them to treat and maintain their results in-between salon visits.” How can salons stock and sell the TriPollar collection? “All three TriPollar devices are exclusively available for Pollogen stockists (who carry one or more of the following in-salon devices; the Geneo, the Divine Pro and the Maximus) to purchase directly and sell onto their clients.” n *Home-use TriPollar RF device for facial skin tightening: Clinical study results, Ghislaine Beilin, MD.

BEAUTIFUL TECHNOLOGY THE FUTURE OF

Beauty

Technology is a driving change in almost every industry, and the beauty industry is no exception. From AI assisted technology, to skincare products that are technologically designed and feature breakthrough, science-based ingredients, the face of beauty is increasingly bound up in technological advances. By ABIC’s Tracey Horden. MANY RECENT innovations have also changed how companies sell products, engage in manufacturing, and how they engage with customers. The bottom line is that beauty companies that integrate the latest technological solutions into their business models will always have the edge over the competition. Consider this, there is now a range of solutions from hair removal, skin age and skin correction management through to body contouring, tattoo removal and much more. Only 30 years ago, these solutions would have been considered almost unattainable, but today these are typical offerings that consumers could expect from their neighbourhood beauty clinic – and it’s all thanks to technological advances. As our digital and real worlds become more and more interconnected, every element of the aesthetics sector is increasingly based on cutting-edge innovations, with the majority of beauty treatments and skincare brands now also leveraging the latest technological advancements. The Aesthetic & Beauty Industry Council (ABIC) celebrates the advantages

of technology has bestowed on the industry, given it was established with the support of their Foundational Members, all of whom share a deep connection with emerging technology. Candela Medical, Caron Lab, Cutera, Cynosure, The Global Beauty Group, High Tech Medical, Inskin and Cosmedics are all industry-leading, developers and distributors of technically advanced aesthetics solutions. Savvy consumers now also expect their skincare to perform, and that’s due to unimpeachable science-backed claims. The skincare industry has been completely transformed with advancements in skin biology, biological gene, skin microbiome, and nanotechnology. New ingredients have been developed, leading to the emergence of innovative product categories. Skincare brands such as Advanced Skin Technology, Dermalist, Dermalogica, Dermaviduals, Issada, Murad and Sothys-Paris are all ABIC Foundation Members, with each of these worldclass brands offering advanced skincare solutions, thanks to technological and scientific breakthroughs.

Beauty Tech The recently emerged concept of ‘beauty tech’ involves incorporating digitalization and technology into the development, production, and distribution of products to improve the ultimate customer experience. This technology-driven approach has gained widespread acceptance in the industry, with major beauty brands introducing innovative products and treatments that are disrupting the industry. As with any industry, the future of the beauty sector is shaped by the consumers themselves and that includes the increase of digital experiences that are more authentic and personalised. An example of this would be a highly personalised, digital skin analysis and prescription. In this paradigm of personalised beauty solutions, that are shared thanks to technology, it is the customer experience that is paramount as it produces engagement while bringing together wider communities such as ABIC around shared values. ABIC recognises that technology is rapidly transforming the entire aesthetics and beauty industry, leading to the emergence of innovative science-based treatments and skincare products. It is a fact that technological advancements are making a huge difference for consumers and by embracing these advancements, the wider industry is revolutionising the way we look, age and feel. MAFS’ Melinda Willis

OPENS UP ON BEAUTY BUSINESS OWNERSHIP SELF-DOUBT AND SUCCESS

When it has come to establishing and solidifying her own beauty businesses, it’s often been a case of one step forward, two steps back for Melinda (Mel) Willis. The Australian reality TV star sat down with Hannah Gay to relay the countless obstacles that have come her way and ultimately set the stage for her success. Melinda, share with us your background in the beauty space and what first drew you to the industry. “It was 2009 when I enrolled into my first beauty course - a Diploma in Beauty in Brisbane. At the time, I wanted to just learn a few things for myself… I didn’t actually think I would end up in the beauty industry at all! But once I had finished the year, I absolutely loved it. We were told that one of the dream jobs for all beauty therapists was to work on cruise ships because it gets you straight into that five-star spa experience. They had sold us the dream of flying to London, living in London for a few months and advancing your diploma. We’d go from there to embark a cruise ship sailing anywhere in the world. So it’s that [life of] travel, luxury and beauty all in one… coming out of a diploma fresh into something like that was otherwise almost impossible, so everyone wanted it. They had trainers come in and go through the class for rigorous interviews. And only one got it… it was obviously me [laughs]. So in 2010, I went over to London to study my Advanced Diploma in Beauty, embarked on my first cruise ship from Miami with Steiner, and was there for a year before returning back. I took a break from beauty after that, doing bits of beauty from home; I was always back-and-forth.”

72 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

Fast-forward to 2018 and you founded your own beauty brand Feather Sisters. “From a young age, I would sit the family around the dining room table, that would be my boardroom and I’d be drawing up business ideas on a white board. I’ve always had a passion for business. At 28, I was working as a flight attendant and had quite a severe work injury and was deemed unfit to fly; it was a massive hit. I fell into this depression and thought, ‘what now?’ I started spending a lot of time online in desperation mode, searching ‘how to get rich’. One business idea really resonated the e-commerce space. [At that time], it was this exciting new space that still had so much room in it for everyone. Through research, I found something along the lines of what our number one product is today our microblading brow pen. From that idea, I reached out to a supplier, spoke colors, spoke design… everything I wanted for it. My first order was with a private label. I also had to learn to build a website, and realised that while there were makeup stores on the ground, there was not much in the way of innovative cosmetic products online, especially in Australia. I chose to stick with cosmetic products that were hard to find in a store and were an impulse buy. [The brow pen]

did so well - it still sells out four times a year and we now have eight products in the Feather Sisters Collection. It was hard for us [during COVID] because we were rebranding and we were trying to expand this business, but all the shipments were delayed… it was taking months. I think we did our first $100,000 in ten days, but then we ran out of stock and couldn’t get the shipments over fast enough. People were angry because their post was taking two months. It was one big nightmare and learning curve, but that’s all we had to deal with whereas others were dealing with the beginnings of ‘how do I build a website?’... that kind of thing. Having that knowledge of beauty behind me was really powerful so it super-seeded everything else. I’ve been in beauty full time since… I will be forever.” I understand you had been running a personal beauty bricks-and-mortar for three years prior to appearing on TV. “From January 2021, I started my own lash business from my apartment, so I was juggling both that and Feather Sisters. I decided I loved lashes out of all the beauty treatments possible; it was my therapeutic getaway from the stresses that came from

salon profile

there were only four remaining [on my return]… all that marketing expense [gone]. [On wrapping filming], I knuckled down on my lash business and started to expand it. A few months later, I signed a lease for my own big, private space.”

“It’s quite an open space where we can separate into little areas while still being open to each other. It’s mixing that world of lash parlours in with the world of beauty; it’s that one-stop shop.” having such a successful online business. I would do the homework for Feather Sisters in my head as I was lashing these clients. At first, I was only doing lash extensions via word-of-mouth to family and friends. I always had this little self doubt of ‘I’m not confident enough to perform these treatments unless I’m working for someone’ or ‘I can’t do it myself’. So I slowly dipped my toes in to get my experience and confidence up again. Again, that went really well, and fast. When clients loved their lashes they would start to rebook; I started getting booked three weeks in advance. Then they would ask if I could add on services like brows. My answer was always ‘oh, I’m qualified in them, but I haven’t been doing them’. And then soon enough, I re-did my menu confidently to offer lash extensions, brows, waxing, lash lifts, brow laminations - services I could do from home without needing extra amenities or room. That was also really hard [as COVID hit] because as I started gaining momentum and my books were starting to fill up, I was in lockdown. You weren’t able to service people from your house or be in contact with anyone. Everyone was closing down as shops were not able to pay their leases. It was kind of a blessing in disguise that I started small and started from home. As soon as things opened, I thought ‘now we have to go full force because we have to make up for all the lost ground’. Everyone had taken a hit and a lot of big beauty places had actually closed, so clients were scattered everywhere. I knew I needed more

space and I wanted to bring someone else on as I was quite booked. I ended up renting a little space inside a multi-level gym and took the second floor.” Then, Married at First Sight (MAFS) Season 10 came along… What happened while you took time out to film? “Come the end of 2022, and I took a break to do MAFS for three months. The application process for the show went for five months, and they kept you hanging so you didn’t know if you were on. I officially knew I was on three weeks out. It was a case of: close your businesses, pack your bags, move to Sydney, and then have minimal access to your phone, laptop and work. Again, I’d just gotten that momentum going and had another spanner thrown in the works. I found someone to take over while I was gone. This person that I trusted to take over I obviously hadn’t spent much time with; I only had three weeks. They ended up sending a text message to my entire database, giving them a new address and told everyone I was closing down. That was a big hit, especially as it was around the time of the show’s big couple swap - my mental peak on the show. I was juggling that, but also juggling that someone was dishonouring the business I’d worked on for almost two years. You’re filming for ten hours straight… but you’ve got to pull it together for your professional career on the outside. That was my main priority. During the time I was gone, I had 360 new clients come through the doors, but

You recently opened Melly’s Beauty Parlour. “It’s quite an open space where we can separate into little areas while still being open to each other. It’s mixing that world of lash parlours in with the world of beauty; it’s that one-stop shop. We now have five staff and have upscaled. We’ve got lashes, brows, nails, spray tans, and we’re about to go into makeup and teeth whitening, so we’re growing. I’ve had a background in running hotels, spas and cruise ships, so we bring that element of luxury into it. But it’s still a little small… for my dreams and what I want to do!” What did your experience on MAFS teach you? Is there anything you wish you did differently? “I really feel that [MAFS] was one of the hardest things I did. There was an enormous amount of strength that I built from doing that experiment, and there was also an enormous amount of respect that I built for myself. There was a lot of characterbuilding, self-analysing, and a lot of life analysing that came from that. I’m not going to give up the businesses ever. [Now] I know my worth, how hard I work and everything that I’ve achieved. I’ve come a very long way and I know that everything that I’ve built is precious. What does the future look like for your beauty businesses, and for you as a business owner and entrepreneur? “The world is my oyster right now. I’m super driven and passionate in everything that I’m doing right now. I feel very content, but I still feel that there’s so much room to grow. I want to keep learning. I want to dive more into learning about management and how to be a good boss for my staff, for my clients, for my business, for myself. My heart is set on a bigger, multi-level one-stop shop [for Melly’s]. I want my own training academy. And when it comes to Feather Sisters - world domination! We’re already worldwide, but it would be expanding and pushing it more across the world.” n

ASK THE

SKINFLUENCER April Brodie is one of Australia’s respected integrated facialists, who incorporates the effectiveness of Gua Sha and the therapeutic ability of Lymphatic Drainage, showcasing her expertise across luxury spa experiences and evidence-based clinical treatments. Ariana Pezeshki speaks to April Brodie about separating fact from fiction, and why Gua Sha’s fall short in true lymphatic drainage. I’M APRIL Brodie and I live and breathe all things skin, and have spent nearly four decades continuously honing my craft with a relentless drive to learn and improve every day. Embracing a unique approach, I aim to offer experiences that stand apart from the rest. This deep passion enables me to connect profoundly with my clients and fuels my quest to seek and fuse new techniques from around the world into my treatments. Establishing my signature Integrated FacialPrivees in Melbourne, Sydney, and internationally. I cherish diversity and excitement. These Exclusive one-on-one spaces inspired by the atelier/Privee concepts in the US and UK, provide the perfect setting for my signature Buccal and Bee Venom treatments, and I’m currently developing a new facial treatment. What led April to the beauty industry? From a young age, I had a profound interest in skin and began creating my own masks and creams using magazines like Dolly as my beauty bible. In 1982, fate led me to a boy at my school bus stop whose mother had just opened a beauty salon. This encounter led me to embark on work experience and a traineeship, immersing myself in the blossoming Australian beauty industry. I was captivated by the experience, juggling work alongside my studies and soaking up every additional course and workshop wherever possible. This marked the beginning of my passion for learning. Subsequently, I had the privilege of working with Ella Bache, renowned for their incredible education program and stellar reputation. I managed two of their clinics and worked in three. After some overseas travel, I ventured into the world of spa treatments, working at one of the first Australian hotel spas at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast. Eventually, I returned to Melbourne and fulfilled my dream of owning my first clinic. My advice for clients to treat their skin effectively is to focus on overall skin cell function and prioritise the skin’s barrier to achieve peak conditions. A healthy skin barrier acts as the first line of defence, allowing skin cells and components to function optimally.

74 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

A disrupted skin barrier leads to inflammation, sensitivity, and bacteria which can cause breakouts. Moisture and hydration play essential roles in maintaining a healthy skin barrier, along with balanced use of active ingredients and exfoliants, daily sunscreen, a healthy diet, adequate sleep and stress reduction. Australia’s first qualified Cecily Braden Gua Sha Practitioner I am incredibly grateful to have trained with Cecily Braden, a worldwide expert in modern Gua Sha. Her knowledge, expertise, and methodology align seamlessly with my core beliefs and Cecily has pioneered an amazing fusion that combines traditional and contemporary Gua Sha, created specifically for our industry and the demands of modern clientele. I’ve spent years adapting and perfecting these techniques, and combining them with other methods and practices I’ve learned around the world to create my signature April Brodie fusion experience. Is Gua Sha a fashionable fad or a legitimate lymphatic drainage solution? There is a common misconception that Gua Sha is synonymous with lymphatic drainage. However, Gua Sha is primarily a tissue treatment that impacts blood flow and fluidity. While massage indirectly affects the lymphatic system, it is not the same as lymphatic drainage. Gua Sha can act as a catalyst and assist in lymphatic flow while providing its own unique benefits. By working on the musculature and the circulation below the skin’s surface, Gua Sha enhances blood circulation, releases muscle tension, relaxes facial muscles and reduces stress – all factors that influence skin health. The true method of lymphatic drainage is the Vodder technique, which is still used today in the medical field postsurgery and to treat lymphedema. I’ve trained in this method and incorporated it, alongside Gua Shaas as part of my signature April Brodie Integrative approach. Gua Sha may seem like a fad due to its recent surge in popularity, but Gua Sha is an ancient healing technique that has now been adapted for everyday beauty benefits. When used correctly, Gua Sha can be a powerful skin treatment tool, and those who understand

skinfluencer

the movements and what it’s really doing below the surface will appreciate its longlasting benefits. Gua Sha is not true lymphatic drainage, but it can act as a catalyst to assist with lymphatic flow and has its own distinct benefits and uses. Facial Gua Sha is very new compared to traditional ancient Gua Sha practices. Traditional Gua Sha involves very firm, vigorous scraping of the skin, whereas modern Gua Sha focuses on creating movement in the underlying tissue to support the skin’s natural functions. Gua Sha’s primary advantages are its ability to enhance blood circulation, release muscle tension, relax facial muscles, and reduce stress. Stress hormones are responsible for inflammation in the tissue, so reducing stress through Gua Sha can indirectly impact the skin’s health. What other benefits does Gua Sha offer? Gua Sha offers multiple benefits beyond its potential impact on the lymphatic system.

This technique directly influences the skin and the facial muscle tissue, as well as the skin’s vascular network. By increasing the blood flow to the facial tissue, cells receive more nutrients and oxygenation, resulting in boosted skin health. Gua Sha is also a powerful method of facial massage. Although it may not directly target the lymph nodes, its ability to relieve facial muscle tightness and tension can indirectly affect facial lymphatics, especially when used in conjunction with evidence-based lymphatic drainage techniques. Trends come and go, I’ve witnessed numerous trends in my 40-plus years in the industry. While some have proven to be valuable, others haven’t stood the test of time. I’ve seen many cycles of treatments, ingredients, technologies and techniques phase out of popularity only to resurface later. Some of these have been adapted, fused, and modernised to give even better results than the original. I’ve learned that knowledge and experience are paramount in distinguishing between fleeting fads and

proven methods. Truly understanding the skin’s anatomy and physiology, lifestyle factors that influence it, and how cosmetic ingredients and technologies work allows you to distinguish between fleeting fads and proven methods Just as it’s impossible to be good at a new hobby the first time you try it, it’s taken me decades to master the Integrative Facial experience I offer today. n

MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM IN THREE EASY STEPS The success of your business relies on a multitude of factors, but one of the most important is your team. Plenty of studies have proven that a highly engaged and motivated team is great for business. By Kamrin Hira.

IT’S NOT uncommon to struggle with keeping your staff inspired and committed to your business. If you’re noticing your team needs a little bit of motivation, here are three steps to achieve that!

encourage your team to contribute ideas and suggestions for improving them. It not only provides you with a fresh perspective but also makes your staff feel heard and valued.

Step 1: Get your team invested in the business Getting your team invested in your business and its results is a great way to increase their commitment, sense of responsibility and willingness to work as a team. One effective way to achieve this is by sharing your business financials with your team. This creates a sense of transparency which leads to ownership and shared responsibility, which shows your staff that their hard work truly makes a difference to the overall performance of the business. It fosters trust and shows your staff that they are valued members of your team. Hold weekly team meetings to discuss your key performance indicators (KPIs) and

Step 2: Create incentives that reward achieving KPIs If you’re struggling to motivate your team, don’t worry; it’s completely normal. People work differently, and what motivates each staff member can vary. If you’ve been trying to get your team invested in the business’s overall performance but are struggling to keep them motivated, it might be time to introduce incentives. Incentives are a great way to motivate your staff to do what’s needed to achieve specific results, as they receive a reward for performing at or exceeding the expected level. Incentives don’t necessarily have to be monetary; there are other ways outside of a commission rate that can help. For example, you can offer a monthly

80 | WWW.PROFESSIONALBEAUTY.COM.AU

team reward, such as a fun day out or an afternoon tea if everyone meets the goal. Or incentivise each staff member individually with a free treatment or a day in lieu if they meet their goal. Your business management software should allow you to easily set goals and track your staff’s progress towards their targets, such as how much appointment retail sales revenue they made, or how high their rebooking rate is for the month. By having this data readily available and checking it regularly, you can check their progress and support them if they need help to reach their goals. Step 3: Let your staff track their progress for self-motivation Self-motivation can drive your team to achieve success. Although you can track their progress and share it with them over the month, it’s a great opportunity for your staff to take an active role in tracking their progress and holding themselves accountable for their results. Your software should allow you to set up a personalised chart for your staff to track their progress towards their targets, without seeing others’ performance. By making this information accessible to them, you can encourage your team to check it daily and see how close they are to reaching their goals. By implementing these three steps; sharing financials to get your team invested in the business, incentivising their performance with rewards, and allowing them to track their progress closely, you can help to create a happy, motivated team that is loyal to your business and fully engaged to perform at their very best. n

IS YOUR SALON READY FOR A CYBERATTACK? The beauty industry might seem a million miles away from data breaches and cyberattacks. But the ugly truth is that your salon may be more at risk than you think. Jane Mason, Head of Product, Channels & Risk at BizCover, reveals why small businesses like salons are prime targets for cybercrimes and how salon owners can manage their financial risks following an incident. AUSTRALIAN SMALL businesses are a favourite target of cybercriminals. A 2020 Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) survey found that 62% of respondents had experienced a cyber incident during the previous year. As cyber threats continue to evolve, beauty professionals may need to rethink how they protect their businesses. You might think as a salon owner you are not vulnerable to a cyberattack. After all, your business only runs off a laptop and you don’t hold a lot of sensitive information. Think again. Your laptop holds a wealth of information and drives many interactions that could put your small business at risk. Why small businesses? You may hear a lot about cyberattacks happening to big corporations, but that doesn’t mean your beauty business is safe. Cybercriminals often prefer to go after small businesses because they’re usually easier targets. “Many small businesses are completely unprepared for a cyberattack,” says Jane. “They may not have the time to educate themselves and their staff on common threats. And with so much else on their plate, they might decide to prioritise other areas of running their business over cybersecurity.” Salon owners also tend to rely on outside suppliers and partners to help them run their businesses. These relationships are another way for crafty criminals to hack into systems, steal data, or initiate unauthorised transfers. Others simply don’t have the budget

for cybersecurity. That same ACSC survey found that almost half of small businesses spent less than $500 per year on cybersecurity. What can beauty professionals do? The world of cybercrime moves fast. It might seem impossible for beauty professionals to stay one step ahead of threats. However, even small steps could help lower your chances of becoming a cybercrime statistic. Learning how to spot common cyberattacks is a good place to start. If you can recognise a phishing message, you may be less likely to fall for the con. The cyber. gov.au website has many free resources to help you educate yourself and your staff. You don’t need to be a computer whiz to start protecting your systems. Installing a firewall and anti-virus protection are great first steps. Promptly install security updates on your salon’s devices (computers, tablets, mobile phones, and POS devices) and set reminders to back up your business files regularly to help avoid data loss. Finally, talk to a cybersecurity pro if your budget allows. They can provide more tips for staying cyber-safe and help you better secure your salon’s systems. Cyber Liability insurance to the rescue! But what if your salon is still attacked, despite your best efforts? That’s where Cyber Liability insurance* can help. It covers the financial fallout of a cyberattack, so you’re not left holding the bill.

A Cyber Liability policy covers many expenses associated with cyber incidents, from investigating how the breach happened to notifying affected customers. These policies also help cover business interruption costs, an often-overlooked part of cyberattacks. “Every moment you’re unable to book appointments or accept payment could mean losing money and clients,” says Jane. However, the greatest value of Cyber Liability may be in their incident response services. Many business owners have no idea what to do when a cyberattack happens. By the time they consult an IT company, they’ve potentially lost time and money far beyond the cost of an insurance policy. “Cyber Liability policies offer 24-hour incident response services that policyholders can call on for assistance. This immediate response can help reduce the impact of the attack and get you back to business as usual faster.” Business Insurance in Action Here’s an example of how Cyber Liability insurance helped a small business respond to a cyberattack: A hairdresser’s VoIP telephone system was hacked, and the cybercriminal made $30,000 in unauthorised calls to a premium number in one month. Thankfully, the hairdresser had a Cyber Liability policy. They made a claim, and the insurer paid $30,000 to cover the salon’s financial loss. A cyberattack might be dramatic, but Cyber Liability insurance can help you manage the impact one has on your salon. GWINGANNA’S WELLNESS APPROACH

In today’s hectic pace there is something precious about hitting the pause button, fast tracking wellness to the top of the agenda and taking time to reset the clock. Enter the award-winning lifestyle retreat Gwinganna which has won the World’s Top Eco Spa spot twice. By Anita Quade

THIS STUNNING Australian owned and operated retreat opened its doors in 2006 and has proceeded to become one of the most well-known luxury escapes both in Australia and overseas. It’s stunning location is just a short 60 minute drive from Brisbane and is perched on a plateau of 200 hectares of stunning hinterland. Gwinganna means ‘lookout’ and as guests arrive at the lush green haven following a long winding driveway surrounded by rainforest and wildlife it offers the utmost in privacy – with the entrance accessed by security gates. You can almost feel a sigh of relief as guests hover near reception at the 2pm check in time – ready to check out of the real world for one of the retreat’s lifestyle programs that extends over weekends and up to longer stays. Guests have the option to choose from program themes ranging from detox to other specialities such as women’s health. It’s a testimony to the glowing regulars who are spotted at the haven – some declaring they have extended their wellness journey here as they have never felt so good. It’s a little wonder given the comprehensive offering of delicious seasonal organic food, daily workshops, spa treatments and the sheer bliss of nature and fresh mountain air that begins to soothe the souls of weary guests burnt out by the nine to five grind. You get the impression you are in safe and healing hands with many of the staff spending decades or more at the retreat. The program offers guests the chance to do as little or a much as they like – there are plenty of activites ranging from yoga and meditation to guided walks – the one compulsory activity on the day of the arrival following afternoon tea is the Welcome Orientation at the Wellness Education Complex run by the weekend host to provide a general overview of what to expect and how to get the most out of the stay and rejuvenate both mind and body – with an onus on the most important person – you! After a guided tour of the facilities guests are left to enjoy their late afternoon. Exploring the vast property is like a step

back in time with a historic stunning tiny church perched near the restaurant and a welcoming homestead feel with painted creamcoloured roofs juxtaposed with new accommodation offerings in the perfect blend of old meets new accommodation all surrounded by towering gum trees that are home to the koalas in residence. The sprawling farm like feel is enhanced by a colourful Organic Garden that produces seasonable vegetables, herbs and delicious fruit that all ends up on the guests plate as part of the stunning organic food offering. Even edible flowers are grown in the garden in a rainbow of colours and are used to add a pretty touch to meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the main dining room – with guests having the chance to mingle over shared tables during the two courses with inventive dishes featuring fresh produce lovingly prepared on site. Some are here for a work retreat, others just to rebalance their mental health and wellbeing – every whim is catered for and for those who would like to try their hand at whipping up some of their most loved dishes there is a cookbook on offer filled with healthy recipes ranging from great juices, health balls to more comprenshive dinner dishes that feature fish, chicken

and beef – its refreshing to note the food is generous in portions (so much so some guests have been known to ask for half serves) and meat and poultry are also on the menu – which quells the fear of those attending that they will be left hungry eating just leaf greens! The menu is designed in conjunction with a nutritonist and is gluten and dairy free, with the aim of reducing inflammation and to balance blood sugar levels. You will even find organic coffee, tea and organic wine at dinner for those on selected retreats. There is a range of accommodation options from The Villas that offer sumptuious deep baths and special features such as a plunge pool or steam room – for the ultimate in relaxation. The stunning Orchard Suites offer magical views of the orchard and are built from reclaimed timbers with spacious verandahs and day beds that are perfect for reading and soaking up the sunshine in a state of bliss. The accommodation is spacious with the twin share featuring double beds, ensuite bathroom and an adjoining loungeroom – perfect for those travelling with a friend but who also love their own privacy. Another option is the Heritage accommodation which have been bought to Gwinganna from various locations or built onsite in the original Queenslander style. Lovingly restored with large lounge areas and baths. A typical day at the retreat starts with the option of getting up early to see the glorious sunrise at 6.15 for a session of Qi Gong – possibly one of the most peaceful ways to start the day with gentle movements all in unison perched on a clifftop with views of the valley as the sun slowly peeps over the horizon. Breakfast is served in the dining room and then guests scatter to do as much or little as they please – with options for long bush walks and Yin and Yang activities. In the late afternoon the perfect ending to the day is a Guided Relaxation class in the pavilion that is the perfect pre-dinner relaxation. The best part is that mobile phones are banned from use throughout the retreat with only an option to use these for guests in their room or at the historical old cricket stand on the oval. Likewise reception is limited so it’s a great escape from computers and the modern gadgets that take up precious time. For those wanting to work up a sweat there is the two level gymnasium and training centre offering plenty of the latest hi-tech equipment and the chance to swim in the heated infinity edge swimming pool filled with pure rain water. The World Renowned Spa The dreamy spa is a 33-room sanctuary and is the largest spa in the Southern Hemisphere offering a smorgasboard of experiences from organic facials featuring products including the organic brand by Vanessa Megan to add on therapies and Ayurveda Aromatherapy. General Manager Deborah Munster says: “Afternoons at Gwinganna are designed for the body to slow down and balance, and it’s the ideal time to experience our restorative spa treatments and facilities.” The massages here are world class and the Gwinganna Classic Massage is 50 minutes of bliss or for those who would like to extend the treatment there is an option of 80 minutes. Guests can also choose to relax in the Wellness Lounge which offers state of the art wellness pods – opt for LED light therapy, Infrared Sauna or the innovative Somadome Meditation Pod. In testimony to its success that draws wellness travellers from all over the globe – it was awarded the world’s best eco spa in the world twice most recently in 2022.

We chatted to skincare formulator Vanessa Megan who stocks her range at Gwinganna with many of the facials utilising her renowned award winning brand. Tell us how your skincare brand came to be at Gwinganna? “I’ve always wanted to create the best 100% Natural skincare possible, and a true measure of success for me was having a professional range that was trusted by the leading beauty therapists in Australia. We were fortunate enough that the team at Gwinganna valued what we were doing in the space, and became an essential partner as Vanessa Megan moved into the spa market. This has helped us develop a professional spa range, as well as get a deeper understanding of how our customers respond to our products. That feedback loop has ultimately made us better at innovating and developing skincare products to meet market needs.”

skin, I started to make Vanessa Megan products and began selling them at the Bondi Markets, determined to educate people about how vital it was that we only use 100% Natural, organic ingredients in skincare products. At the time, I would never have imagined that we would be in 1000s of outlets here and overseas, and in many of the top spas in Australia. But when I look back, I’m proud that we’ve never wavered from my commitment to only use Natural ingredients that give clinical results (we even coined the term Naturaceuticals to define that exact thing).” What is it you love most about the industry? “I love to challenge nature to solve skin problems naturally, with clinical results. And it’s exciting when I can take those options to the industry, and see people have that aha moment, where they realise that natural ingredients are incredibly powerful if you use them in the right ways.”

What are some of the most popular products at the spa? “We get a lot of positive feedback about Aeon Azure, our regenerative night cream, which is a luxurious, ceramide-rich crème that submerges skin in all day moisture. This is a part of the Gwinganna facial, and therapists are always asked about it. Another product that works for all skin types is The Holy Trinity, which is a simple yet powerful Daily Maintenance Routine comprised of 100% natural beauty products designed to minimise touch points while maximising absorption of potent plant-based ingredients. The Holy Trinity contains petigrain cleanser, rose hydrosol and our bestselling product, N.E.O. which, when used together has proven to solve skin concerns such as acne, pigmentation, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, and to naturally enhance normal and combination skin with lasting results.” All these products are part of the Vanessa Megan facial experience at Gwinganna.

Recently you won several categories in the 2023 Organic Beauty Awards – tell us about that? “We are always thrilled to win awards, and this year is no different, having won a number of awards for a number of my brands, including Biode, which is our 100% plastic free brand. We love the organic beauty awards as they are promoting a mission and vision that we hold dear, and they are helping to elevate other brands, and raise awareness around the importance of organic and sustainability in our industry.”

Any treatments that you love there at Gwinganna? “The treatment that we really love at Gwinganna, is the Vanessa Megan Cryo Facial which works with extreme polar temperatures to create a full resurfacing of the skin with zero downtime. It uses a fire and frost element featuring our cryo ice cubes to create a slight trauma to the skin, which increases blood flow and collagen production.”

What are your plans for the future of the brand? “We are so excited to talk about Metamorphosis, which took out four awards at the 2023 Organic Beauty Awards. This is my new range of transformational skincare formulated specifically for peri to post-menopausal skin. The skin goes through a lot of changes during menopause, caused by a decrease in estrogen and collagen production. Many women don’t realise why, all of a sudden, their skin is dry or crepey or they’re getting age spots. So I’ve spent over two years researching all the symptoms of Menopause, and formulating a skincare range using 100% Natural ingredients to specifically treat those skin conditions. We’ve also developed Australia’s first spa treatment for menopausal skin incorporating the sculpting and lifting intra-oral buccle massage, and using our phyto estrogen rich skincare. This treatment delivers age defying results and will be a gold star in all

How did you originally launch your skincare brand? “Back in 2001, my friend Mel said to me “You shouldn’t put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat” and it was a light bulb moment for me, realising that whatever we put on our skin would be absorbed into our body and effect our vital organs. Back then, there wasn’t much in the way of natural, organic skincare, so I started making skincare for myself… and when I discovered how many of my friends had no idea what they were putting on their

What other milestones stand out for you? “A highlight was winning most popular brand of 2022 at the organic beauty awards, and the global innovation awards. But to be honest, the thing that really gets me excited is when we get testimonials from people using our products and it’s made a huge impact on their confidence and their lives. Nothing tops that.”

Melissa Allen, Founder & Director

Melissa Allen Mood Essentials reveals the inspiration behind her range and the power of scent.

I launched my signature brand of scents because… “I’ve always loved fragrance and learnt how fragrance can also help boost our mood to live our best possible life. As I believe everyone, no matter who you are or what your background is deserves to be happy and enjoy life.”

I love beauty because… “It allows for selfexpression, boosts confidence, promotes self-care, helps stimulate creativity.”

Next year I plan to… “Keep moving forward both in business and life in general and not to forget to have fun along the way.” I would tell this to my younger self…. “Embrace your authenticity, embrace your true self. Don’t’ waste time try to fit into someone’s else mold or approval from others. Trust yourself and believe in your abilities to step out of your comfort zone to pursue your dreams and aspirations. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive and uplifting people will bring joy and laughter to your journey.”

Three words that sum me up… “Fun, Determined and Passionate.”

My favourite can’t live without product is… “Fragrance, of course!”

The biggest lesson I have learnt when launching the range is … “Understand your customer’s needs. I also learnt that success doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a journey, to stay committed, focused and resilient.”

I believe in the power of fragrance because. . . “It has the ability to impact our mood and emotions, trigger memories and can help our well-being. Fragrance has a unique way of tapping into our olfactory system. Fragrance also plays a significant role in personal expression and identity. The scents we choose to wear or surround ourselves with can become part of our unique signature.”

For me it’s important to be Australian Made because… “Australian made allows a sense of connection and pride in the local community. It strengthens the bond between producers and consumers, fostering a sense of shared identity and supporting the unique character of Australian industries.
