Editor’s Letter

Welcome to our last issue of the year –and my last issue for a while – as I swap conferences and journalism for parent groups and sleepless nights. As I am writing this, I am 10 days away from starting my maternity leave, and it’s a bittersweet feeling for sure. I am elated to start motherhood, but also feel sad to step away from this publication and community of aesthetic and wellness professionals. It’s been exactly seven years since I started my role as Editor of SPA+CLINIC, and a lot has changed since then.

our list may not be comprehensive, I think it offers a very good snapshot of the greatness and professionalism Australia has to offer.

Coinciding with my temporary departure is our 25th anniversary, which we celebrated with a party in September. It was a heartwarming night with industry friends and supporters who had the nicest things to say about us – thank you to everyone who came. See some photos from the party on page 24. Anniversaries offer a great chance to take a look back, which is exactly what we’ve done on page 32, so if you’d like a chuckle, have a look at some of the covers we’ve produced over the years.

I’d like to think that we’ve always reported on the latest innovations in the industry, and have shown the incredible evolution of treatments and products available, which is reflected in our cover story for this issue. Dr Cara McDonald and Dr Steven Liew tell us why SkinCeuticals’ newest product, P-TIOX has been a game changer for their patients. Just like products have evolved, so have practitioners and their spas and clinics, so to celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’ve put together a list of Australia’s 25 best spas + clinics. Of course, there are so many more aesthetic and wellness businesses in Australia that are excelling at what they do, so while

The latest and greatest in the aesthetics industry, tested by the SPA+CLINIC

team.

Nadine Dilong, Managing Editor tried: Sunescape Spray Tan

Being eight months pregnant, there aren’t a whole lot of beauty/aesthetic treatments I am allowed to have at the moment, but a Sunescape spray tan is indeed pregnancy safe, and so of course I jumped at the opportunity to have a bit of a glow-up at The Parlour Room in Sydney’s Randwick. Born in Bondi, made in Australia, Sunescape is an award-winning sunless tanning range that delivers natural-looking colour with a dreamy tropical scent. Filled to the brim with skin-loving vitamins, antioxidants and hydrating oils, Sunescape formulas enrich the skin while giving a tan that looks and feels natural. I was given a skin exfoliant to prep my skin the day before, and had a brief consultation about the kind of tan I want when I arrived at The Parlour Room. We ended up going with the lightest one, ‘Bondi’, and I am glad I did, as it was definitely dark enough. The spraying process only takes about five minutes, and I was pleasantly surprised how evenly it tanned my skin – no streaks or patchy areas anywhere! I washed it off after three hours and followed the aftercare guidelines of using the Sunescape shower gel and body butter every day to prolong the tan. It looked amazing for an entire week before you could see it rub off on certain areas with skin folds, such as the neck and underarms – a result I am very happy with! probeautysolutions.com.au

Kym Cowper, Partnerships Manager tried: Emerald Laser

I’ve been visiting Refine Cosmetic Clinic Bondi for the past two weeks, receiving the Emerald Laser treatment by Erchonia for fat reduction. Manuela and the team at Refine have been using the Emerald Laser post liposuction surgery, which is providing outstanding results, helping with Lymphatic drainage and healing. This cutting-edge technology is so easy for the practitioner to use and the green light is super cool; it feels like it’s the future of body sculpting. Its non-thermal laser technology targets fat cells directly without causing discomfort or requiring downtime. What sets Emerald apart is its ability to convert fat into energy while supporting the body’s cellular functions, making it not just a fat loss tool but a treatment for overall health. Worth noting, having the treatment is so pleasant – no pain at all. We are targeting my abdomen so just 15 minutes on both sides is all we need. The Emerald protocol is two treatments a week for four weeks and then we will monitor results via the body scanning tool Styku that provides a comprehensive report of girth measurements, BMI and weight a few weeks after the complete session.

The team at Refine have been incredibly professional and caring throughout the process, ensuring I felt comfortable and informed. My experience has been nothing short of transformative. I’m already seeing a reduction in fat and more defined contours. Plus, there’s no downtime, so I can continue with my day feeling refreshed! I’m excited to continue my journey and highly recommend the Emerald Laser for fat reduction support – I’m half way there. innovamedaesthetics.com.au

Nadine Dilong, Managing Editor tried: Rationale Skincare Regime

People often ask me what my favourite skincare brands are, and ever since I started using Rationale two months ago, it’s definitely up there on my list of favourites. Rationale is the brainchild of Richard Parker, who founded the ‘Australian luxury skincare’ brand over 30 years ago. It is built on a model that’s slightly different to other skincare brands, using six essential steps. The system of three collections for daytime protection, followed by three for overnight repair, provides all of the skin’s daily nutrients at the correct concentrations. The formulations feel beautiful on the skin, and a little goes a long way.

I had my entire regime prescribed during a Rationale facial at Raes at Wategos, and have been using it religiously morning and night. I love that some of the products can be used in different ways, for example the cleanser, which can also be used as a mask, it’s that nourishing! Rationale is all about protecting the skin from the sun and other environmental factors that cause skin ageing, so of course, an SPF 50 is part of the regime. All of the products that were prescribed for me are pregnancy safe, so I have that peace of mind that I am not causing me or my baby any harm. Lastly – and I know it’s not the most important part, but anyone who says it doesn’t matter is lying – the smell of Rationale products is divine. I can’t put my finger on what it smells like, but it’s unique, just like everything else about this Aussie icon. rationale.com

Facts & Figures

“Gentle, yet transformative” is how Rebecca Altomonte describes the treatment results she achieves for her patients at her new clinic Face by Rebecca in Sydney’s trendy suburb, Drummoyne. Hues of Apricot, Beige, and Gold along with different textures evoke a sense of warmth as you enter the five-treatment room clinic, which also includes a photo room and LED corner. For Rebecca, it’s important to offer a safe space for women. “We refer to ourselves as a state-ofthe-art aesthetic clinic dedicated to empowering women to look and feel their most confident, naturally,” she says, and explains that she also purposely built the clinic to hold training and mentoring opportunities.

Name: FACE BY REBECCA

Owner: REBECCA ALTOMONTE

Location: DRUMMOYNE, NSW Size: 130m 2

Number of rooms: 5

Number of staff: 6

Interior Inspiration: ELEGANT, CLASSY, INVITING

“I purposely built and designed the clinic with my advanced cosmetic training and mentoring program in mind for doctors and nurses. As it’s been hugely successful and I couldn’t always fit the numbers, we now have a beautiful large space that opens up to allow training to take place with a built-in projector, treatment room set up that can comfortably and efficiently run bigger workshops all while in a beautiful surroundings.”

Rebecca worked with an architect and interior designer to bring the clinic to life, but she had a pretty good vision of what she wanted the space to look like anyway, and also involved her daughter, who is a design student and “has beautiful taste and a great eye for detail,” as Rebecca says. “My goal was to create a completely bespoke, purpose built space offering every possible mod con in the world of aesthetics from purpose built rooms that seamlessly flowed from the skin analysis and photography room through to the treatment rooms finishing in the recovery pod.”

Making a clinic not feel clinical might sound like a challenge, but Rebecca used simple tricks to achieve this, such as hiding her medical devices behind full length curtains, giving a calming ambiance. She used a similar principle for her favourite corner in the clinic, the LED recovery pod where clients can listen to a carefully chosen meditation with BOSE headphones under the LED following treatments, helping them relax and unwind.

“The LED pod room also has a beautiful LED mirror with makeup and anything else they may need to use before going back out into the fast paced world. Our clients love this space as it gives them time to destress and relax after treatments which in turn creates a more positive experience on rebooking at reception,” she says.

“I really feel the clinic complements my journey in the cosmetic industry and how far I’ve come from my dedication, time and efforts into learning, upskilling, training, providing six-star service and outcome for all the clients I come in contact with. I believe the clinic reflects the past 17 years and how I have evolved in both my personal and professional life and how l’ve become more sophisticated in my offerings to my clients,” Rebecca concludes. “Your clinic’s ambiance can make a huge difference. Consider calming colours, lighting, and furniture that set a relaxing tone. Your clients should feel that they’re stepping into a sanctuary, even before their treatment begins.” We think this is exactly what Rebecca achieved.

Here’s What We Learnt At SKINCON 2024

Including, how even the country’s most acknowledged medical professionals stressed the importance of cross-collaborative care, says TANEESA WILLIAMSON

SKINCON, hosted by the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians (ASDC), was held at the Rydges Hotel in Melbourne across the weekend of 13th –15th September. With a jam-packed agenda, exhibitor hall, and engaging workshops, this year’s SKINCON set a new standard for medical aesthetic events, attracting top-tier professionals eager to push the boundaries of skin health.

Sparking innovation

The excitement was buzzing as attendees arrived, enjoying a networking coffee and a special ‘Members Breakfast’ workshop led by Stephanie McLean, Creative Director of Social Aesthetic Co. Stephanie’s session was a high-energy dive into the world of branding and advertising compliance, showing clinics how to rise above the noise and win in the competitive digital space.

With caffeine-fuelled enthusiasm, the event rolled into the SKINCON opening session, setting the tone for a day filled with revelations, fresh perspectives, and actionable strategies. From start to finish, the emphasis on collaborative, multi-disciplinary care shone through, showcasing how dermal clinicians are now essential players in Australia’s aesthetic and medical landscape.

Scientific sessions that packed a punch

Leading the morning charge was Dr Ryan De Cruz, Consultant Dermatologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, who shook things up with his keynote on acne management. Dr De Cruz’s session was a wake-up call for the industry, stating that “Gone are the days of just medicating acne.”

He championed cross-disciplinary approaches, emphasising the importance of integrating dermal clinicians for more comprehensive care. His insights into the newly available Winlevy, a topical spironolactone, and adjunctive LHA moisturisers gave the audience exciting new tools to tackle acne with greater efficacy.

Next up, Joanne Healy took the stage for an illuminating talk on skin barrier and microbiome.

Joanne wowed the audience with her discussion on plant-derived exosomes — natural, science-backed solutions that mimic vitamins and revolutionise the way we think about barrier repair. This session struck a chord with attendees keen to explore new ways to protect and nourish the skin microbiome.

Another highlight of the afternoon was Dr Michelle Rodrigues’ session on hyperpigmentation. Dr. Rodrigues shared game-changing insights into treating melasma and other pigmentary disorders, underscoring the need for accurate diagnosis and a tailored, multi-disciplinary approach. Her admiration for dermal clinicians was evident, acknowledging their expertise in topical therapies and their crucial role in managing these complex cases. “50% of the global population are concerned by a pigmentary disorder, which overrides other known common conditions such as acne or eczema,” Dr Rodrigues explained.

A future-looking focus on integrated care

Throughout the day, the evolving role of dermal clinicians was a key focus. As more healthcare professionals across Australia become aware of their critical contribution to skin health, dermal clinicians are gaining recognition as key players in multi-disciplinary teams. This collaborative spirit was reinforced in the closing panel session, featuring industry leaders like Amelia Cartmel, Stefanie Milla (CEO of ABIC), and Stephanie McLean. The panel explored upcoming regulatory changes and how aesthetic clinics can stay ahead of the evolvements, especially with last year’s changes with Ahpra, which confused aesthetic clinics that employ both Ahpra and non-Ahpra clinicians.

Tech, trends and networking

Meanwhile, the latest aesthetic technology and skincare was on display in the exhibitor hall, alongside networking opportunities which ran throughout the event, with plenty of time for professionals to catch up with old friends, make new connections, and exchange insights on the latest industry trends. Whether over lunch or during breaks, these interactions added a lively, social element to an already jam-packed day.

Day 2 – Cinical exploration workshops Day 2 of SKINCON24 brought another wave of high-energy sessions, insightful workshops, and expert-led discussions. Held at Victoria University within the Dermal unit, three standout sessions ran concurrently, offering attendees a chance to explore versatile, highimpact treatments designed to elevate their clinical practice.

Cryomed Aesthetics showcased the incredible versatility of the 1927nm laser, a game-changer in non-invasive aesthetic treatments. The session demonstrated how this wavelength is effective in treating a range of skin concerns from pigmentation and skin resurfacing to scar management. Science Skincare took attendees on a journey into evidence-based skincare, showing how the power of scientific research can dramatically improve clinical outcomes.

Dermocosmetica led an insightful session on Dermaceutic’s range of superficial to medium-depth chemical peels, offering a comprehensive overview of how these peels can be used to address various skin concerns. Attendees learned how to tailor peel treatments to individual patient needs, with a focus on improving skin texture, tone, and clarity.

The key message? The future of skin health is collaborative, and dermal clinicians are leading the charge. As multi-disciplinary care becomes the gold standard, the role of dermal clinicians in Australia’s medical aesthetic space will only continue to grow. If you missed it, mark your calendars for next year— dates announced soon!

Maybelline Prince

DANNÉ MONTAGUE-KING’s movie is a must-watch for skincare enthusiasts and beyond, and we got an exclusive preview screening.

Danné Montague-King, the founder of skincare brand DMK, is one of the most recognised beauty moguls in the world, with DMK being stocked in hundreds of skin clinics worldwide. Not many know about his life before DMK, his ties to Maybelline, and his immense influence for the LGBTQ+ community. This is soon to change, as Danné is just about to release his first movie, Maybelline Prince, which is telling the story of his illustrious life.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of the beauty industry, the film chronicles Danné’s - or Danny’s, as he was known then - journey from Newport Beach to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he encounters Evelyn Williams, known as “Miss Maybelline.” As he navigates a world filled with swindlers eager to seize her Maybelline fortune, Danné discovers profound lessons about loyalty and the true essence of beauty.

The film, which stars Robyn Cruze, Greyson Chance and Elisheva Glaser, combines elements of drama and biography, offering a unique lens on an iconic figure in the beauty industry.

“It’s about a young man coming from California who was gay, openly gay, but not flaunting, and came into a town with a very powerful, wealthy, glamorous woman,” says Danné. “His mentor and muse kind of took over the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, in a nice way. He influenced all the young people to be more than what they were. Most of them were poor. Most of them were like Rugrats street kids. He did a tremendous amount of life changing, and didn’t realise what he was really doing. That was me, and it was the kickoff for the rest of my life.”

Danné was approached by a friend who wanted to turn Danné’s book, his autobiography, which was released in 2014, into a movie, and so they produced it together. Danné thoroughly enjoyed the experience, saying “in movie productions, a lot of people are lost and forgotten about. They’re just techies, and nobody pays any attention. But we paid attention to everybody, and I think it was a family affair that really made this film so unbelievable and so viewable.”

In August 2024, Australian media and friends of DMK were invited to an exclusive preview screening of the movie at Golden Age Cinema in Surry Hills with Danné present as well. Many in the audience praised the film for its rich storytelling and compelling performances, noting how it brings to life the challenges and triumphs of its characters. Attendees, including DMK clinic owners, shared their thoughts after the screening, highlighting the film’s ability to inspire and provoke discussion about the complexities of ambition and the impact of personal relationships in achieving one’s dreams. The ending of the film captures how the “Maybelline Prince” went on to found a skin care dynasty of his own, DMK.

Maybelline Prince is due to be released later this year.

Hosted by internet besties Lucy Neville and Kee Reece, the event included a Q&A with questions guests had submitted prior about their most pressing beauty dilemmas. The Skinstitut team answered questions and explained why their new moisturiser is a welcome addition to the Skinstitut range.

Guests enjoyed a three-course lunch and got to take the new moisturiser as well as some other iconic Skinstitut products home to try. Skinstitut is stocked in Laser Clinics Australia nationwide. Get Ready With Youngblood

On August 22, American professional mineral makeup brand Youngblood invited media to Arturo’s Rooftop in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo for an intimate breakfast and makeup tutorial session to discover and try the brand’s high performance products. Youngblood’s makeup products are all mineral based using clean ingredients, but are highly pigmented and deliver results you would usually not expect from a mineral makeup brand.

Guests got to have their foundation shade matched and received a makeup kit including the brand’d essential products. A standout product were the brand’s new blush sticks, which blend seamlessly offering a pop of colour on people’s faces. Another important aspect to note is that Youngblood is post-procedure suitable for minimally invasive treatments such as needling, making this brand an outstanding choice for skin clinics.

Your Silly Season Business Insurance Checklist

December is probably the busiest time of year for beauty professionals. To make sure you’re prepared for every eventuality the silly season brings, you may want to consider reviewing your insurance policies

It’s a good idea to review your insurance policies regularly to ensure your cover still suits your business needs. For example, it could be a good time to review your insurance if you’ve recently invested in new, high-end equipment, relocated to larger premises, or added additional services to your offerings.

If your circumstances change, but you forget to update your insurance, then you may find that your policies don’t offer you the cover you need should the worst happen. Having inadequate cover (or no cover at all) could potentially lead to business disruptions and financial losses at the busiest time of the year – something no salon owner wants to deal with during the silly season.

Your insurance checklist

If you haven’t reviewed your insurance for a while, now may be the time to do it – especially if your circumstances have changed. You may want to consider updating your policies to make sure you have adequate cover to avoid being underinsured, or think about purchasing new policies that provide cover more in line with your current business needs.

Check out the following types of common business insurance beauty professionals typically have:

Public Liability insurance

No doubt your salon, spa or clinic is a busy place to be. You likely have customers, suppliers, reps and delivery drivers coming and going every minute of the day. And while you strive to create a safe risk-free environment for everyone, accidents can happen.

Public Liability insurance covers you if a third-party claim that your negligent business activities caused them injury or property damage.

If you have a commercial lease, then your lease may require you to legally hold Public Liability insurance. If that’s the case, you may want to make sure you’re still meeting the minimum cover specified in your agreement.

Professional Indemnity insurance

As a professional working in the wellness and beauty industry, you

probably have clients asking for your professional advice on a wide range of topics. Professional Indemnity insurance covers you for losses claimed by a third party and defence costs due to alleged or actual negligence in your professional services or advice. You may also find it helpful to review or update your existing policy if you’ve just begun to offer new services.

Cyber Liability insurance

It’s highly likely you rely on some form of technology to help you run your business. Unfortunately, this means that you may be vulnerable to various cyber threats.

If you have a website, accept online payments, use an EFTPOS machine or rely on any other type of technology to run your business, you may wish to consider Cyber Liability insurance. This type of insurance covers losses from claims arising from data breaches and cyberattacks as well as business interruption and remediation costs following an actual or threatened data breach.

Contents insurance

Contents insurance can be included in your Business Insurance Pack. It covers your contents and stock in the case of a fire, storm, malicious damage, or another type of event listed in the policy wording. If you currently have Contents insurance, but have not reviewed or updated your policy in some time, it may be time to revisit it to make sure it’s still up to date. This can help to make sure your

contents and stock are insured for the right amount. For example, if you’ve recently bought new equipment or extended the range of stock you have on offer, it may be a good idea to review their value and what your cover limit is.

Theft insurance

If you run a salon, clinic or spa, you probably have a lot of expensive equipment, tools and products that you need for specific treatments –not to mention the electronic equipment you use to run your salon, like your laptop, tablet, phone or other devices.

Theft insurance can cover your contents or stock from theft, attempted theft or armed hold up. Damage to the building, locks and safes as a result of a covered event will also be covered.

25 Years Of SPA+CLINIC

Managing Editor NADINE DILONG reflects on the past, present, and future of our industry.

25

years, a quarter of a century – that’s a long time. Long enough for married couples to celebrate the day with a substantial party, long enough for certain movies to get screened in theatres again, and definitely long enough for a print publication to celebrate. You see, print magazines have gone through a tough time in the past 10 years. The digitalisation and social media have changed the game for ‘slow media’, advertisers have shifted their focus on google ads and other digital ways to communicate with their audiences, and society has neglected to slow down and actually read a physical copy of a book or magazine, instead opting to look at screens all day.

You would have noticed a lot of consumer magazines, especially in the fashion and beauty space, have disappeared from newsstands in the past few years, and have either gone digital only, or folded altogether. This is why it makes me so proud to write these words… SPA+CLINIC magazine has been in print for 25 years, and we’re not going anywhere. We’ve even survived the pandemic, and it’s all because you, our readers and brand partners, keep supporting us and see the value of an industry magazine that is created to inspire, educate, and inform.

The covers on the previous two pages show the evolution of our industry, and the magazine as such.

Launching as ‘Spa Australasia’ in 1999, the focus was on wellness and spa treatments as the first day spas had emerged in Australia. What once was an industry based on massages and fluffy facials, morphed into a highly sophisticated space for medically backed treatments that are often about longevity and – let’s be honest – looking younger for longer.

The rise in popularity of injectables in the early 2000s changed the game, and along with the wrinkle smoothing and volume adding jabs came the democratisation of Plastic Surgery, as well as nonsurgical treatments using lasers and other devices. The

industry exploded and skincare, as well as regular visits to your skin specialist became a form of selfcare. With this change and shift in focus, our publication was rebranded as ‘SPA+CLINIC’ in 2014, and has since been Australia’s leading B2B publication for the mediaesthetic and wellness industries.

When I joined as Managing Editor in 2017, my goal was to offer our readers information they couldn’t get anywhere else, and really focus on our niche industry without blurring the lines between professional and consumer content. There were enough ‘lifestyle’ consumer titles out there, and I didn’t see the need for yet another publication to talk about healthy recipes and lipstick shades for every season. The articles in SPA+CLINIC were supposed to be written by industry for industry, and so I immersed myself in countless medical and spa conferences over the years to find out what really matters to our audience of dermal therapists, cosmetic nurses, doctors, spa professionals etc.

Throughout the past seven years, we’ve put on trade events, recorded podcasts, filmed webinars, done countless photo shoots, interviewed the best in the industry, shared our day-to-day on social media, and of course, published four issues of SPA+CLINIC magazine each year.

I am proud to say that our content has become ultra focused, newsworthy, and – I hope – actually helpful to our readers. The connections and relationships that my team and I have nurtured over the years are everything to us, and we do not take them for granted. A publication like ours can only exist thanks to brands advertising with us, and I am so happy that we offer these brands a valuable platform to communicate their messaging to our audience.

I truly hope I get to write another editorial like this for SPA+CLINIC’s 50th anniversary, and I know that with your support, it’s only a matter of time.

Thank you.

We Need To Address The Concerning Rise Of ‘Ghosting Behaviour’

You’ve probably been ghosted by a patient, but are you doing the same to the brands that work hard to support you? GARETH PEPPER would like you to reflect on your own behaviour.

magine this: You have a client booked for a treatment at your clinic. You’ve spent a significant amount of time on the phone, passionately pitching your services, detailing the benefits of your treatments, and emphasising the value of your clinic. You’re confident they’re ready to make a meaningful investment in a treatment package – an investment that would not only benefit them but also help you cover your clinic’s overheads.

Now, imagine the disappointment when this client doesn’t show up. No calls, no messages – just complete silence. You’ve been ghosted.

Unfortunately, this scenario is all too familiar to businesses in the medical and aesthetic industry. Many of the top companies in this field, including those pioneering new technologies and revolutionary treatments, are often on the receiving end of the same unresponsiveness from clinic owners and their representatives.

The Industry at a Glance

In the world of medical and aesthetic treatments, numerous companies are tirelessly developing the latest technologies and products. Their mission is to enhance the well-being of patients while providing clinic owners with cutting-edge tools to improve their practice. These companies pour vast resources into research, development, and regulatory compliance, ensuring their products meet the highest standards before reaching the market.

But just like clinics, these companies face significant pressures. They have large overheads, operational costs, and other key obligations. Despite these challenges, they remain steadfast in their commitment to delivering top-quality products and services to clinics, working hard to maintain a high standard in the industry.

The Importance of Strong Partnerships

For continued innovation and growth in the medical and aesthetic fields, collaboration between these companies and clinic owners is essential. Clinic owners are critical partners in bringing new treatments and technologies to the public. Together, they play a pivotal role in pushing the industry forward.

Unfortunately, there has been a troubling rise in ‘ghosting behaviour’ from clinic owners and their teams, even at the most basic levels of communication. It’s ironic, and even disheartening, to see those who have experienced ghosting themselves repeat this behaviour towards their industry partners.

Communication Is Key in Challenging Times

We recognise the financial pressures and uncertainties many clinics face today. It’s a difficult environment for everyone. But in these challenging times, transparency and communication are more important than ever. It’s okay to ask for more time to make a decision. It’s okay to decline an offer or explain why plans have changed. Honest communication allows all parties to move forward in a constructive manner.

Successful clinics around the world understand the value of maintaining strong relationships with their sales representatives and industry partners. These relationships are more than just transactional; they’re crucial to a clinic’s ongoing success. Staying connected with industry partners means staying informed about the latest technologies, market trends, and new techniques – elements that can make a significant difference in a clinic’s competitiveness.

A Collective Industry Challenge

This issue of unresponsiveness is not unique to any one company. Many businesses in the medical and aesthetic industry are experiencing the same frustrations. As a relatively small and interconnected field, we have the chance to create a culture of cooperation, understanding, and professionalism. With new regulations and rapidly changing market conditions, maintaining open lines of communication is vital for everyone involved.

Even if we don’t have the perfect solution for your needs at this moment, we are always innovating and evolving. The right product or technology for your clinic may be just around the corner. By keeping the lines of communication open, we can work towards building lasting relationships that will benefit both your clinic and the broader industry in the long run.

Moving Forward Together

In an industry as dynamic and competitive as ours, mutual respect and understanding are key to thriving. Let’s commit to maintaining professionalism and open communication. Together, we can overcome challenges, foster innovation, and ensure that the medical and aesthetic fields continue to advance. By working hand-in-hand, we can all achieve greater success.

The Road Ahead

ABIC’s STEF MILLA on the state of the Industry

Occupations Review

In 2024, the beauty and aesthetic industry is undergoing significant transformation. At the core of this shift is the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and its ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) Review, which will shape the classification of occupations across a variety of industries, including ours.

We have seen firsthand how vital this review is for the future of our industry, and we are proud of the role that every participant of the review process has played in ensuring that the voices of our members and industry stakeholders are represented accurately. Yet, the journey does not end here, in fact it has just begun. Before we explore the road ahead, let’s recap.

Who is the ABS and What is the ANZSCO Review?

The ABS is Australia’s national statistical agency, responsible for collecting, analysing, and disseminating essential data that informs public and workplace policy and regulation, workforce planning, and economic decision-making. One of their key functions is to maintain the ANZSCO, a system that classifies and codes occupations in Australia and New Zealand. This system forms the backbone of our society’s entire workforce, including planning, education, funding, regulatory frameworks, and even visa categorisation.

The ANZSCO Review is a comprehensive evaluation of occupational categories and definitions. The goal of this review is to ensure that occupations are accurately classified based on the evolving nature of work across various industries. For the beauty and aesthetic sector, this review is crucial because our industry has seen significant changes in recent years, from the rise of advanced skin therapies, modality and technologies, to increased regulatory oversight. Accurate occupational classification will determine how our industry is funded, regulated, and perceived by policymakers and the public.

How the ANZSCO Review Impacts Our Industry

For beauty and aesthetics, the ANZSCO classifications impact everything from government funding for education to regulatory changes and visa approvals for skilled professionals.

More importantly, these classifications affect how our industry is recognised and understood by government bodies and the general public. An accurate classification allows for better workforce planning, ensures appropriate education and training programs are funded, and helps protect the professional standards of our industry.

Occupations that are not properly classified risk being overlooked in important government decisions around funding, support, and regulation. For example, if certain advanced aesthetic roles are not recognised in the ANZSCO, it could limit access to governmentsupported training programs or immigration pathways for skilled professionals. This is why the ANZSCO review is so pivotal—it has the power to shape the future of careers within our industry.

ABIC’s Role in the ANZSCO Review

As the peak body representing beauty and aesthetics, ABIC has been at the forefront of advocating for the accurate classification of occupations. In 2023, we called for member feedback in the first stage of the Personal Services ANZSCO Occupations Review for our industry. Our members’ feedback formed the basis of our first proposal, which was submitted to the ABS in December 2023.

When the ABS released their Stage 4 notification of the revised ANZSCO proposal in July 2024, ABIC immediately sought feedback from both our members and the wider industry. Throughout late July and August, we conducted an awareness campaign, held industry meetings, and launched surveys to gather your insights. We carefully reviewed the feedback and presented a full survey report to the ABIC SelfRegulation Committee, composed of industry stakeholders, on September 4th.

The Self-Regulation Committee then refined the proposal based on your feedback and created a semi-final proposal. This proposal was reviewed by the ABIC Council and other key industry bodies, including the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians and SACSA. The semi-final version of the proposed occupations was released in September 2024, and ABIC submitted the final proposal to the ABS on September 6th, 2024.

Now, we await the ABS’s final determination, which is expected in December 2024.

What’s next?

We hope that our proposed occupational framework will be accepted. However, there is a possibility that it will not be realised in its entirety. Therefore, should we feel that the outcome does not align with the needs of our industry, we are prepared to appeal. This is not the end of the journey but rather a pivotal step in securing the recognition and support our industry needs to thrive. We understand that not everyone will be satisfied with the final classifications. However, it’s important to remember that this is a collective effort, and our strength lies in our unity.

We want to encourage more people to pursue careers in our industry, highlighting the richness and diversity of roles available – from hands-on practitioners to business leaders, educators, and innovators. Our goal is to create an industry that is not only thriving with innovation but also unified in its vision for the future.

This is an exciting time for our industry, but it’s also a time that calls for unity. The more of us who come together, the stronger and more accurate our representation will be when we advocate to the government.

If you’re not already a member of ABIC, we encourage you to join us. Together, we can continue to shape the future of our industry, ensuring it grows, prospers, and remains a place where careers are rich with opportunity.

How To Optimise Your Online Store For A Seamless Customer Experience

LYN NGUYEN shares how small changes to your website can make a world of difference for your clients.

In today’s digital world, your website is often the first point of contact a customer has with your brand. Offering a seamless online experience has never been more important. Your online store needs to help users understand, relate to and trust your brand so that they can ultimately go on to buy your products and/or services. Whether you are experienced with e-commerce or just starting out, there are many ways to ensure a first-class user experience.

Provide clear and succinct product information

As a beauty or wellness business, you likely sell products that warrant careful consideration before purchase. The way you describe and display product information can make or break your sales funnel. Your products and service descriptions should be short, sharp and simple. Include professional imagery and highlight key features, benefits and usage directions.

Balance is key. While you want to ensure that customers are wellinformed, you also don’t want to overwhelm them. Spare the educational content here and instead, save it for long-form blog posts on your website. Incorporating relevant keywords that are tailored to your target market on your product page and blog posts will also enhance Search Engine Optimisation. This will help attract further traffic over the long run.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) to stay one step ahead

Show your customers you know them best with a detailed FAQs page. By having this information readily available, you save time from having to answer the same questions, while also reducing the risk of customers leaving your site to find it elsewhere. In this way, you ensure the customer experience is centralised around your online store, increasing your conversion rate.

To anticipate the questions customers may ask during the consideration stage, particularly for beauty and wellness brands, consider answering:

• What are the benefits of this product?

• What are the key ingredients?

• What skin type does the product cater to?

• What are potential allergens?

• How should I use this product?

• What are the shipping and return policies?

Customer personalisation with quizzes

Gamify the online shopping experience with a quiz! This is an exciting and engaging way to help customers find their ideal product from

your suite. Consider how you can tailor product recommendations by skin type, wellness goals and other concerns. Quizzes can be easily integrated into your site’s menu, making for a fast-tracked and uberpersonalised experience.

Categorise products for easy navigation

One of the easiest ways to elevate the shopping experience is through clear-cut categories. Click onto any established online store and you’ll see a menu that catalogues each product and/or service. Beauty and wellness products and services can be grouped by brand, popularity, body area and seasons (just to name a few). Categories highlight the diversity of your range and make navigating your site a breeze.

Make discounts visible and easy to apply

In today’s competitive landscape, discounts and promotions can often be the final push for customers completing a transaction. While tailored promotions can be an effective sales strategy, many forget to make the redemption process easy for the end user.

Remember to:

• Make your promotion unmissable with a simple banner at the top of your site or a pop-up window

• Emphasise the promotion on applicable product pages to remind customers of potential savings

• Review codes on a regular basis to ensure they are active

• Make the codes timely to convey a sense of urgency By having a frictionless checkout process, you will significantly mitigate cart abandonment and increase conversions.

Mobile-friendly design

In the age of smartphones, most customers will be shopping your site from a mobile device. Having your website fitted and enhanced for smaller screens is a non-negotiable for an optimal omnichannel presence. Users should have the same smooth shopping experience no matter what device they access your site from, with product details, payment options and customer support just a few taps away. By putting the customer first and anticipating how they will engage with every touchpoint of your site, you can build trust, ensure customer satisfaction and increase your conversion rate.

Quick Business Tips From Natalia, Founder of NNC Pro Beauty Salon

What was it like opening your own business in Australia nine years ago?

Opening my beauty boutique in Darlinghurst nine years ago was a thrilling and challenging journey. Coming from Brazil, I navigated different business practices and market expectations, but my passion for beauty and determination to succeed kept me going. Building a loyal clientele and watching my salon grow into a beloved spot in the community has been incredibly rewarding.

What have you learned about running a small beauty business ever since?

I’ve learned a lot over the years. Running a small business is a continuous learning process. After COVID, while many businesses closed, we stayed strong by adapting and focusing on our strengths. Being resilient and flexible has been key to our growth. Embracing change and listening to our clients has helped us thrive despite the challenges.

How have your client’s expectations changed and how do you accommodate that?

Clients today seek natural-looking brows, fluffy and healthy lashes, and organic hair treatments. At NNC Pro Beauty, we not only meet these expectations but also provide an exceptional experience. We focus on delivering top-quality services and treatments, making each visit memorable and tailored to their needs.

What would be your number one tip to attract new clients?

My number one tip for attracting new clients is to build a strong online presence. Showcase your work with high-quality photos and engaging content on social media, and encourage satisfied clients to leave reviews. This helps build trust and draws potential clients in by demonstrating the quality and value of your services. nncprobeauty.com.au

Here’s How Hiring A Professional Photographer Will Elevate Your Business

Elevate your spa or clinic’s branding through high quality photography and videography, as captured by Esteban, Founder of Studio La Tessa.

In an industry where image matters, the right photography can define a brand. For businesses in the aesthetic, beauty, and wellness sectors, showcasing professionalism through headshots and event coverage is essential.

Esteban La Tessa, owner and operator of Studio La Tessa, has mastered this art, offering lifestyle photography and video production services across NSW, QLD, and Victoria, with availability for interstate and international projects. He has worked with countless professionals in the beauty, aesthetic, and wellness industry and has also been behind the lens for some of SPA+CLINIC’s cover stories.

Tell us about your experience in photography and how you got started.

I started my career assisting fashion and advertising photographers when I moved to Sydney in 2003. While it was tough at first making connections, I soon built relationships with iconic brands like Chanel, Burberry, and Porsche. My background in wedding and event photography also helped me develop the ability to engage and photograph a wide range of people, from models to CEOs.

What do you believe is most important in commercial photography?

Building a connection with my subjects is essential. I’m naturally a people person, which allows me to make clients feel comfortable in front of the camera. Growing up in Argentina and Germany gave me a passion for languages and cultures, which helps me relate to people from all walks of life. That personal connection translates into more genuine, engaging photographs.

Why should businesses, especially in beauty and wellness, invest in professional photography?

In today’s digital world, an online presence is more important than ever, especially with the constant demand for fresh content on social media. Engaging a professional photographer is crucial for creating high-quality images that stand out and help brands make an impact. Professional images elevate the brand and convey trust and authenticity to potential clients.

What kind of photography does Studio La Tessa specialise in?

We focus on professional headshots and event photography, as well as videography, especially for businesses in the beauty and wellness industry. Whether it’s a clinic owner looking for polished team headshots or a brand hosting a large event, we ensure every moment is captured with precision and style.

The Power Of Connection And Human Touch

AMANDA

GIACCA , Director of Thérapie Skin and Beauty shares how she has made a meaningful impact through her skin clinic.

What inspired you to start Thérapie Skin & Beauty, and how has the journey been since its inception?

Thérapie Skin and Beauty has morphed into a clinic that aligns with my own personal motto, being “When I look good, I feel good and then I do good”. Meaning that when I’m more confident within myself, I am more present with those who matter most to me, I’m a better employer, a better wife and mother and a more productive member of my community, and I want that for every client that walks through my doors. What began as a typical “beauty salon” offering massages, skin, nail and pedi services and spray tans in 2017, has evolved over the past eight years to align with my passion, being advanced skin services.

Can you share your core philosophy when it comes to skin and beauty treatments, and how it sets your clinic apart?

Understanding the needs of our clients begins with a thorough consultation, this is where we begin our journey, establish a connection and build trust, which then allows our clients to share their concerns, and together we create a bespoke treatment plan that is completely as unique as they are.

What steps do you take to ensure that every client has a unique and positive experience at your clinic?

Our client experience begins well before they step foot in our clinic. It incorporates not only social pages and website but how we interact with them leading up to their appointment, and this also continues well after they leave. We maintain contact with them in between their appointments as well, to help with any questions they have.

Your clinic offers a range of specialised treatments. How do you decide which services to offer, and how do you stay updated with the latest industry trends? Included in our consultation is a clinical assessment, this is where we conduct a thorough physical assessment of their skin and report

on our observations along with the supporting evidence from our diagnostic imaging. At this point our Dermal Therapists then work with their client to determine which treatments will target their concerns. Typically we don’t feel the need to ‘keep up with trends’ as often they are very short lived. We prefer to stick to evidence based and clinical grade treatments that deliver real results.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the beauty industry, and how have you overcome them to achieve success?

Adapting to meet the needs of the current climate has meant that we need to be flexible in our offering and pivot to ensure we are meeting those needs.

How do you see your clinic contributing to the local community in Daisy Hill?

Self-care and confidence is a topic I can talk about for days, so I see our role in providing these to our community as a critical one. Currently most of us are stressed, tired, exhausted, confused, and overwhelmed and I see our role in not only providing skin services but also the power of connection and human touch one of necessity, not luxury.

What are your future goals for Thérapie Skin & Beauty, and where do you see the business in the next five years?

I would love to expand into a women’s wellness hub where we will not only be offering amazing skin services but also consulting professionals such as naturopaths, nutritionists, psychologists, remedial massages and yoga. A real one-stop wellness destination.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own beauty clinic?

Business ownership is an extreme sport and a lonely one at that. Get yourself a business coach from the very beginning, I couldn’t do what I do without Chrissy Alger from Freedom Mastery.

Making A Difference

KARLA MCDIARMID is more than a trailblazing skin clinic owner, she also makes a difference in her community through her humanitarian work.

What motivated you to purchase Macquarie Medi Spa in 2002, and what has been the highlight of your journey?

My journey started at 16 when I moved to Sydney to study beauty and work at Dermalogica. After realising the city was too expensive, I returned to Bathurst and worked at a salon where I’d completed Year 10 work experience. When the owner wanted to sell, I seized the opportunity. The highlight has been watching the business grow and forming meaningful connections with our clients, team, and the community.

Macquarie Medi Spa has won numerous awards. What do you believe is the key to your success in the beauty industry?

Passion is at the heart of my success — I genuinely love what I do every day, and that energy keeps me going. Adaptability and continuous improvement are also crucial. Over the years, we’ve refined our services, learned from setbacks, and eventually began winning awards. Sharing knowledge with my team and focusing on education ensures we’re all growing together. My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: never give up, believe in yourself, and keep striving to improve daily.

How do you ensure your team stays updated with the latest trends and techniques?

We emphasise constant training. We work with brands that provide ongoing education, ensuring our team stays updated on the latest treatments and innovations. I encourage the team to try treatments elsewhere and bring fresh ideas back to us. I also regularly assess services to maintain high standards and spot areas for improvement.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the beauty and wellness sector?

Self-care is essential to avoid burnout. Get experience with various employers to learn different skills, and price your services correctly from the start. Focus on your

own unique vision — don’t get distracted by competitors or social media. Building a successful business requires staying true to your path and keeping your focus forward.

What inspired you to engage in humanitarian work alongside your career in the beauty industry?

Helping others has always been a personal passion, and I’m fortunate to have a team that supports my volunteer work. Partnering with generous companies like Sothys and Dermalogica has allowed us to make an even bigger impact. These brands help by donating products and sponsoring events that support local causes. Giving back — whether it’s helping healthcare workers, raising awareness for cancer, or supporting local charities — fills my heart and adds meaning to what we do.

Can you share some key humanitarian projects you’ve been involved in and how they’ve impacted the community?

We host an annual pink fundraiser for Breastscreen, and I’m proud to volunteer with Lifeline as a Crisis Supporter trainer. It’s been life-changing to help clients and team members through tough times. I also work with WIRES to rescue wombats, and organising Bathurst’s Fashions on the Field has been a fantastic way to help boost tourism. These efforts have made a real, positive difference in our community, and I’m proud to be part of them.

What are your goals for the future, both for Macquarie Medi Spa and your humanitarian work?

We’re expanding our Bathurst location, doubling its size to offer more services and create new job opportunities. On the humanitarian front, I plan to continue working on wildlife rescue, educating students about wellness, and supporting local charities. Our goal is to keep growing both the business and our positive impact on the community, staying true to our values of giving back and making a difference.

Navigating the Recent TGA Restrictions: Two Different Points Of View

We speak to two RNs and Cosmetic Injectors, BROOKE from Rejuved and KELLY GEORGE from Kelly George Aesthetics to learn more about how exactly the recent TGA changes have impacted their businesses.

Nurse Brooke, Rejuved

Over the recent years the cosmetic industry in Australia has seen significant changes with the introduction of stricter regulations by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). These new restrictions have had a profound impact on how cosmetic clinics and medical practitioners within the industry operate, as well as how patients are educated about cosmetic procedures. While some may view these changes as limiting, they have also introduced new opportunities for both practitioners and patients to enhance the quality of care and safety in the industry.

The TGA’s recent crackdown on cosmetic injectables and other related procedures has been primarily driven by safety concerns. Among the new regulations are more stringent guidelines on advertising, prescribing, and the qualifications required to administer cosmetic treatments. These changes aim to ensure that patients are fully informed of the potential risks and benefits of cosmetic procedures and that practitioners are held to the highest standards of medical care. For example, clinics are now required to follow strict protocols when advertising cosmetic services, avoiding misleading claims and ensuring that patients receive proper consultations before undergoing any treatments.

For clinics, including my own clinic, these regulations have undoubtedly reshaped day-to-day operations. One of the most significant impacts has been the shift in how we engage and educate our patients online. Previously, patients might come in with preconceived notions of what treatments they wanted, often influenced by social media trends or celebrity / influencer endorsements. These patients also usually had access to online pricelists and had a preconceived idea as to what the cost of treatment would be, even if it wasn’t the best treatment option for them at the time.

Now, with the TGA’s new restrictions in place, as an industry there is more of a focus to provide assessments and advice based on the individuals concerns and presentations before proceeding with any cosmetic treatment.

While this added step may initially seem like a hurdle or restriction, it has led to an interesting and positive development. Patients are now more open to being led by practitioners during consultations. This shift allows us, as experts, to guide them towards treatments that are genuinely in their best interest, rather than merely fulfilling a request for the latest cosmetic trend or being influenced by their peers online. In many cases, this has fostered a deeper level of trust between practitioners and patients, creating a more personalised and medically sound approach to cosmetic care.

A New Approach

The recent changes in TGA regulations have also necessitated a transformation in how we educate our patients. Patients today are more informed than ever, but this wealth of information can sometimes be overwhelming or even misleading. The TGA’s guidelines encourage a more transparent and ethical approach to patient education, ensuring that they are not swayed by unrealistic expectations or aggressive marketing tactics. In our clinic, we have taken this opportunity to

Brooke

enhance our educational process. During consultations, we focus on providing clear, evidence-based information about the risks, benefits, and realistic outcomes of various cosmetic treatments. This shift has been well-received, as patients appreciate the opportunity to make informed decisions with the guidance of qualified professionals.

While the new TGA restrictions have introduced some challenges to the business, they have also opened doors for growth. By emphasising safety, ethics, and patient-centered care, we can set ourselves apart in an increasingly competitive industry. The evolving landscape of cosmetic medicine is one that requires adaptation, but it also offers a chance to improve the quality of care we provide.

The TGA’s recent restrictions have undeniably changed the way we operate within our clinic ‘Rejuved’. However, these changes have also fostered a more thoughtful and ethical approach to patient care, which is what we value as a brand. By embracing these new standards, we are not only ensuring the safety of our patients but also positioning ourselves as leaders in an ever-evolving industry.

Kelly George, Kelly George Aesthetics

Having a background in pharmaceutical marketing meant I was no stranger to TGA guidelines and the need to advertise compliantly when it came to scheduled medicines. In fact, I welcomed some structure to how we could advertise given some of the false claims and clearly doctored before and after images I was seeing on social media, but what shocked me was the guidelines split our industry into two camps: 1. those of us who immediately did the right thing, removed all of our images, non-compliant wording and references to schedule 4 drugs from our social media pages and websites, and 2. those who decided to ignore the rules and declare (sometimes quite publicly) that they would wait for the warning before they removed anything.

While initially frustrating for those of us who decided to promptly comply, I think we all assumed that the warnings and/or fines would come hard and fast and that camp #2 would be forced to follow suit not long after, thus the playing field would once again be levelled. However, here we are almost a year later and there are multiple small, medium and large players just ignoring the guidelines. This is where I believe it is now impacting the businesses of the clinics who are compliant.

If a potential patient googles certain words (anti-wrinkle, dermal filler) – which is a service they are clearly looking for – they will now be presented with the clinics who are non-compliant and those of us who have removed the words get lost at the bottom of the rankings. I know this is happening because we have had people contact us specifically saying “a friend recommended you but I can’t see anywhere on your website that you do lips” – and this is weekly.

This also highlights how lucky we are that we have an established client base of more than 5,000 and that they refer people to us. But we’re only hearing from the ones who take the extra step to contact us – what about all of those who can’t find it and move onto the next? These are the clients lost to us.

In terms of specific numbers, in 2024 we have seen the lowest number of NEW clients since 2020 (the year we were closed for half of due to COVID lockdowns). In the period 1st January to 31st August 2024 we saw a decrease in new patients of 189 bookings –that’s a drop of 48% from the same period in 2023. Again, we are an established clinic, generally booked out 4-6 weeks in advance so from a financial standpoint we are doing ok, particularly given the added pressures of the current economy. However, we have seen a small

overall drop in gross income in the period Jan-Aug compared to 2024. This is also the first year we haven’t grown since we opened nine years ago. While we can weather the storm, I assume many smaller, newer businesses won’t be able to.

Other issues

There is clearly an issue in the conflicting messages between AHPRA and the TGA. These two regulatory parties have not spoken or coordinated their guidelines, making it even less clear. Some injectors are using this as their “excuse” to post technically compliant AHPRA posts, but not compliant with the TGA.

I have patients coming and asking “are the rules only in NSW?” because they’ve seen other clinics they follow in QLD posting before and after photos – I’ve also heard “is it only nurses who can’t post now?” because they’ve seen doctors continue to post.

Most people who follow a clinic will follow multiple clinics so at this point many consumers are aware of these “new rules”. However, the lack of conformity across all levels of business and health disciplines has turned what was supposed to make things safer for patients utterly confusing for them – while simultaneously significantly impacting small business.

I’ve had multiple conversations with others in the industry and many of us feel like it’s taken a lot of the joy from what we do. It’s very hard to see colleagues doing the wrong thing online. At the end of the day we are healthcare professionals and I personally pride myself on a high level of safe and ethical behaviour in my practice. It raises the question, if you’re prepared to blur the ethical boundaries in one aspect of your business, what else are you doing wrong? Personally I’ve started unfollowing people. I know others have started reporting noncompliant advertising to the TGA.

P-TIOX: SkinCeuticals Synergistic Peptide Technology Redefines Wrinkle Correction

PHear from DR STEVEN LIEW on their impressive case study results.

eptides have signalled a new era in cosmeceutical skincare since gaining notoriety in the early 2000’s. These short chain amino acids are considered master messengers, which can be structured in a multitude of ways to mimic various biological processes in the body and skin, including maintaining hydration to promoting collagen synthesis. The lightspeed trending of skincare on social media, accompanied with a desire for more non-invasive, anti-ageing treatments has seen many brands incorporate peptides in their products.

As the number #1 medical aesthetic brand worldwide, SkinCeuticals prides itself on being at the forefront of skincare innovation. P-TIOX, SkinCeuticals latest

anti-ageing formula is a testament to this innovation, integrating advancements in peptide technology, alongside a radiant skin complexion to correct the appearance of contraction lines and improve skin quality.

P-TIOX features an ‘Advanced Peptide Complex’, a potent combination of two clinically proven peptides that work in tandem to relax superficial muscle contraction, softening the appearance of expression lines, including those that cannot be treated with neurotoxin injectables.

Powerful ingredients

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 is a synthetic peptide that reduces the amount of neurotransmitter released at the neuromuscular junction,

therefore relaxing the superficial facial muscles that, with repeated action, lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Numerous independent, clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, which is well tolerated by a variety of skin types, even those with the most sensitive skin. Additionally, this peptide provides benefits as a humectant where it supports skin barrier health.

The wrinkle-reducing ability of P-TIOX is further amplified by the 2% Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl. This peptide mimics the mechanism of viper snake venom that relaxes muscles by blocking neurotransmitter binding on the muscle membrane. This innovative peptide works in synergy with Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, targeting different pathways of muscle contraction for a comprehensive approach to smoothing facial expression lines by up to 20% after 12 weeks of use.

P-TIOX goes beyond addressing wrinkles, targeting multiple facets of skin ageing to deliver a much sought after skin radiance. This multifaceted approach stems from the brand’s deep understanding of skin ageing mechanisms and formulation science, recognising that youthful skin is about more than just wrinkle reduction. P-TIOX incorporates a ‘Radiant Skin Complex’ comprising 5% Poly-Hydroxy Acid (PHA), 5% Niacinamide, and 1% Laminaria Extract. This potent blend refines texture, minimises pores, improves skin tone, and infuses skin with a healthy, luminous glow.

The efficaciousness of P-TIOX does not just stem from individual ingredient benefits, rather the unique formulation maximises synergy between the active ingredients. Ex-vivo studies on human skin have shown that this specific ingredient combination significantly outperforms the use of a single peptide in boosting the expression of eight crucial biomarkers associated with youthful skin, including collagen I and IV. This translates to amplified results meaning smoother texture, reduced wrinkles, and a fresh, youthful complexion.

12-week case study results

Earlier this year, dermatologist Dr Cara McDonald and specialist plastic surgeon Dr Steven Liew, participated in a global advisory board on P-TIOX. They were tasked with selecting 2 patients each to trial P-TIOX as part of a 12-week case study, where all other skincare actives were stopped, with only P-TIOX and an SPF used. All patients reported significant improvements in the appearance of their lines and wrinkles, with Dr McDonald confirming “my patients have reported noticeable improvements in skin firmness and texture within just a few weeks of use of P-TIOX. The serum’s lightweight formula absorbs quickly, and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.” Dr McDonald believes these results stem from the fact that “the unique combination of ingredients not only target muscles in the skin but promote collagen production and support the skin’s barrier function, to improve the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of ageing.”

Dr Liew’s case study patients also demonstrated visible improvement in skin quality, texture, and redness, with additional improvements in fine lines especially in the under-eye area. P-TIOX has also become a staple in Dr Liew’s personal skincare routine as “P-TIOX is truly a serum that creates a smoother, firmer and glowing skin that is noticeable within a few short weeks. It is backed by robust scientific studies. I cannot wait to see its long-term benefit beyond 12 weeks of use.”

Whether used as monotherapy or integrated in a regimen alongside in-clinic procedures, P-TIOX offers a powerful solution for those seeking to address visible signs of ageing. By combining the wrinkle-relaxing benefits of advanced peptides with the radiance-boosting and texturerefining properties the ‘Radiant Skin Complex’, P-TIOX allows patients to achieve their skincare goals for healthier more youthful-looking skin.

Taking Care Of Your Pregnant Clients

Are you confident to prescribe a safe skincare routine to your pregnant clients?

Pregnancy can be wonderful, hard, confusing, or everything at once. Besides having to watch what you eat, women are also expected to change their skincare routines and avoid certain ingredients and treatments that may harm baby or cause a reaction in the mother’s skin. As a practitioner, it is important you’re educated about the no-go’s during pregnancy, making sure you always ask female patients whether they are or could be pregnant before treatment, and explaining to them what they can and can’t do, and most importantly, why. We caught up with experts in the field to take a closer look at

Dr Ginni Mansberg

Dr Ginni, what exactly is the ‘pregnancy glow’ that everyone talks about?

Ah, the famous “pregnancy glow”! It’s that radiant, almost ethereal glow that people often notice in pregnant women. Now, is it an agreedupon medical phenomenon? Absolutely. While not everyone experiences it (like many things in pregnancy), it’s well-documented, and most doctors agree that it’s a real thing, thanks to the physiological changes happening.

During pregnancy, your body is like a bustling factory, working overtime to support both you and your growing baby. This intense activity leads to some fascinating changes, especially in your skin. First off, your blood volume increases significantly – by about 50%! This surge in blood flow delivers more oxygen and nutrients to your skin, giving it a rosy, flushed look. Think of it as your skin getting a little extra love and attention from your circulatory system.

Then, there’s the hormone surge. During pregnancy, your “male” hormones or androgen levels shoot up, which can lead to your sebaceous (oil) glands working in overdrive. This extra oil can give your skin a shiny, dewy appearance, contributing to that “glow.” But, just like with any skincare story, there’s a flip side: up to 43% of women might find that this increased oiliness leads to acne rather than a glow.

As for studies, there’s a bit less research than you might expect. Most of what we know comes from the broader understanding of

pregnancy physiology rather than dedicated studies on the glow itself. But there’s no doubt that the combo of increased blood flow and hormonal changes creates that beautiful radiance.

We know certain ingredients like Retinoids are a no-go during pregnancy, but there seem to be mixed opinions on salicylic acid and LED treatments – what’s your take?

There’s a lot of confusion about salicylic acid use in pregnancy. The bottom line is that it’s all about dose. 2% or less is totally safe. Oral or high strength topical might not be.

Salicylic acid is a go-to ingredient for keeping breakouts at bay, and it’s found in everything from face washes to spot treatments. The good news? When used topically in lower concentrations (like in most overthe-counter products), it’s generally considered safe during pregnancy. We’re talking about 2% or less here, so your favourite acne-fighting cleanser or skincare is LIKELY to be fine.

However, high concentrations and oral forms of salicylic acid (like in some peels or medications) are a different story. These can be risky because salicylic acid is related to aspirin, which you want to avoid during pregnancy due to potential complications. These are mainly a higher risk of bleeding in delivery and one specific heart issue in the baby (premature closure of the ductus arteriosus). The heart issue is very rare and in reality we need very high doses to be concerned. We actually GIVE pregnant women low dose aspirin to prevent preeclampsia! This is just an abundance of caution.

Now, on to those LED treatments. These gadgets use different wavelengths of light to target issues like acne, redness, or aging skin. Red light, blue light, green light – it’s like a disco for your face!

The good news? LED light therapy is generally considered safe during pregnancy. While it’s never been studied specifically in pregnancy, it’s non-invasive, doesn’t involve any chemicals, and works at the surface level of your skin. That’s why dermatologists say you should proceed without worry.

But always chat with your doctor before diving into any treatment. Everyone’s skin and pregnancy are different, so getting the green light from your healthcare provider is key.

How do you safely treat pregnancy-related acne?

Pregnancy can bring about many changes, including unexpected breakouts for up to 43% of us, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. These are largely due to hormonal fluctuations, though the exact cause remains unclear. Here’s how to manage acne safely during pregnancy:

• Gentle Cleansing: Start with a non-comedogenic, mild, soap-free cleanser to keep your skin clean without stripping its natural moisture.

• Niacinamide: This anti-inflammatory ingredient helps regulate oil production and soothe redness. Perfect for pregnant skin!

• AHAs (Glycolic & Lactic Acid): These gentle exfoliants are pregnancy-safe and can help keep your pores clear.

• Azelaic Acid: A top choice for treating acne during pregnancy, azelaic acid reduces inflammation and unclogs pores safely.

• Salicylic Acid: Safe in moderation (at concentrations of 2% or lower) use it for spot treatment but avoid high-strength peels.

• Antibiotics: Topical antibiotics like clindamycin are usually safe, but always check in with your doctor. Oral antibiotics can be an option but need careful consideration.

• Avoid Retinoids: These are a no-go during pregnancy due to the risk of birth defects, though they’re safe to use while breastfeeding.

My go to Pregnancy Acne Skin Routine:

• Cleanser: Gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser twice daily.

• Treatment: Apply niacinamide and/or azelaic acid.

• Moisturiser: Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser.

• Sunscreen: Daily broad-spectrum SPF to protect your skin.

When should women expect their skin to go back to ’normal’ postpartum?

Acne: Let’s start with the breakouts. Pregnancy acne can be a real headache, and unfortunately, it doesn’t always pack its bags as soon as your baby is born. The good news? Once your hormones start to level out postpartum, which is usually within a few weeks to a couple of months, you should start to see improvements. If your skin is still acting like a rebellious teenager after a few months, it might be time to chat with your doctor about safe skincare options or treatments, especially if you’re breastfeeding.

get them at all and how well you recover. If you’re looking for more aggressive treatments after pregnancy, options like laser therapy or microneedling can help reduce their appearance, but they’re best saved for when you’re done breastfeeding.

So, what’s the takeaway?

Your skin will gradually return to a new normal after pregnancy, but it might take some time. Think months, not weeks. Acne usually clears up as your hormones settle, melasma fades with sun protection and time, and stretch marks become part of your unique journey, slowly lightening over time.

And remember, you’ve just done something incredible. Your skin might have changed, but those changes are part of the beautiful story of bringing new life into the world. So, be patient and kind to yourself during this transition!

Meghan Horn, Managing Director of Biologique Recherche Skincare

Melasma: Those brownish melasma patches can make you feel like your skin’s been playing a game of connect-the-dots. Melasma is driven by hormones and sun exposure. It often starts to fade a few months after giving birth as your hormone levels stabilise. But – and isn’t there always a “but”– melasma can be a bit stubborn and might stick around longer, especially if you’re spending a lot of time in the sun. The key to speeding up the fading process? Keep up with your sunscreen (a must!), and consider gentle brightening treatments like a tyrosinase inhibitor like 4 N Butyl resorcinol, a high quality vitamin C and niacinamide. These are all safe, even if you’re breastfeeding.

Stretch Marks (Striae): And now, those tiger stripes that tell the tale of your pregnancy. They start off as red, purple, or pink streaks and usually pop up as your skin stretches to make room for your growing baby. After delivery, stretch marks gradually fade to a silvery or skin-toned shade. How long does it take? Well, it can take several months to a full year for them to fade, but unfortunately, they never completely disappear. However, they do become much less noticeable over time.

There are lots of creams and oils on the market claiming to prevent or reduce stretch marks, but the evidence is weak. Keeping your skin moisturised can help with the itching and might improve the appearance a little, but genetics play a big role in whether or not you

I heard that all BR products, except for one, are pregnancy safe – is that an intentional decision when developing new products and why?

All of Biologique Recherche face care products are pregnancy safe, there are a few body products that are not suitable for pregnancy due to the essential oils and some of our in-clinic facial treatments are not recommended for pregnancy but otherwise, yes the face care retail range is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding. We try to avoid ingredients with controversial safety data as part of our

Retinol is one of the ingredients to avoid when pregnant – what are some alternative ingredients BR uses that have a similar effect and are pregnancy safe? We use a lot of peptides that have tried and true rejuvenation properties. Our Serum 3R contains peptides and some gentle acids that help to renew, regenerate and restructure. This triple action gives unrivaled smoothing, toning and firming of the epidermis. The skin texture is refined and complexion is more even, without the risks associated with retinols.

Are there any BR products that are particularly popular with pregnant patients?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding we see a lot of patients with increased sensitivity, especially in the perioral area so quite often we see people otp for a gentler routine. Also during the postpartum and breastfeeding period we see huge changes in the skin as a result of hormonal shifts. Our Creme MSR-H is popular during this period as it specifically addresses changes in the skin due to oestrogen drop. Also we often see postpartum hair loss. We have a range of scalp care to aid in preventing hair fall, our cult favoutive Lotion P50 has a scalp adapted version and the Complexe Cegaba + Bioproline scalp serum is perfect for anchoring the hair root and preventing hair thinning.

Cutting Through The Noise Of Tween Skincare

Skincare for children and tweens has been one of the biggest trends

Tweens and children are not in need of high level cosmeceutical or anti-ageing ingredients. They are in the prime of youth, where skin is in optimum health and the aim is to maintain, nourish, and protect their skin for the many years to come. Except in the case of acne, where we would look to incorporate exfoliation and the use of vitamins, it is simply not necessary for use outside of this concern.”

“Younger consumers are more curious and informed than ever before. I do believe there is a positive link between social media and the internet in general. They are able to access information of their own accord, research brands and ingredients, read/watch reviews, listen to podcasts, speak directly to their peers as well as experts. I also believe multi brand retailers, (be it online or bricks and mortar) such as Sephora, Mecca, Adore Beauty are providing exciting and appealing retail spaces for this age group to shop and learn.

Dr Hkeik: “We want to cut through the noise and conversation that can be very overwhelming for parents and their children alike. We don’t want you to feel like you are failing as a parent or as an individual if you are not investing in certain products/ ingredients. We note that there is a rise, specifically on social media for certain brands that are appealing to a younger demographic. The price point is on the higher side and the active ingredients, whilst wonderful and beneficial for an older demographic, could indeed be harmful and not helpful for younger skin. We want to create clarity through education.

It is important to begin using skincare early as long as we don’t harm the skin along the way (Let’s not forget a certain facial scrub that was popular in the 90’s/ 00’s!). Starting early educates the younger generation about how to protect their skin and prevent future damage (unlike our group, where the knowledge about protection was never discussed!) It is about developing healthy habits early to continue throughout later life.”

Carmen McNamara opened Perth’s first baby spa, Little Sunshine Spa, earlier this year. We ask her about the skincare products she recommends for babies, children, and tweens.

Petite Skin Co. makes skincare for children and tweens

Jacqui Millbank, CEO Petite Skin Co.
Emma Corrie, Director The Kind Sunscreen

Carmen McNamara: “When it comes to babies and children, less is often more (I say this on repeat). It’s important to use gentle, hypoallergenic products that are specifically formulated for their delicate skin. For babies, parents should focus on using mild, fragrancefree body washes and moisturisers. Sunscreen is essential, but it should be a mineral-based, broad-spectrum sunscreen designed with less ingredients; I always opt for chemical free. As children grow, their skincare routine can be adjusted to include gentle cleansers and lightweight, hydrating moisturisers, depending on their skin type and needs. This is another reason why I opened Little Sunshine Spa, with the addition of tween skincare options, to assist families in this area.

At Little Sunshine Spa, we take great care in selecting only the safest and most effective products for our young clients. We stock organic and hypoallergenic brands that are free from harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, and dyes. These products are specifically formulated to nourish and protect the skin, making them ideal for babies and children. Each product we use has been carefully chosen to ensure it meets our high standards for safety and efficacy, providing parents with peace of mind. My skincare options can be used throughout the whole family, I am so proud of this!”

Emma Corrie founded The Kind Sunscreen, which is suitable for use on babies. We ask her about the ideal SPF routine for our youngest ones.

Emma Corrie:

I refused to use sunscreen on my precious newborn’s skin. Never being a user myself because of all the chemicals absorbing into the skin, I bought every natural sunscreen I could find, yet nearly all of them left a white cast, were chalky to use or hard to apply. I decided to create my own, but had no idea where to start. I had a simple list of requirements for the formula – minimal ingredients, safe for all skin types including babies and breastfeeding mums and reef and ocean friendly – I just had to find a laboratory that could formulate it. The search began.

Jacqui Millgate has been at the forefront of tween skincare as she founded Petite Skincare Co. more than five years ago. Here, she shares her insights.

Jacqui Millgate: “Introducing a skincare routine can be an exciting journey for your child. The thrill of having their very own skincare products makes the process enjoyable and engaging making good skin habits easy. The ideal age varies from family to family. Firstly, we all know wearing sunscreen is the most important good skin habit, however it also needs to be removed at the end of the day and using water just doesn’t cut it. Being so much more delicate than adult skin, children’s skin is much more susceptible to environmental factors. We do find when children first express an interest in skincare makes the whole process of a daily routine even easier. Our mantra of going to bed with a clean face is super important to avoid congestion and breakouts and maintain good skin health. From my own experience, seven was the ideal age for my daughter as she experienced early skin changes such as dryness, milia and congestion. We do have parents with children as young as five sending us through photos of their children with early pimples.

Companies that make and sell sunscreen ingredients and products should test them thoroughly for potential short-term and long-term health effects. This includes toxicity testing for irritation and skin allergies, as well as testing for skin absorption and the potential to cause cancer, disrupt the hormone system and impact reproduction and development.  Slowly this is changing in the sunscreen arena however there is a still a number of sunscreens that use harmful ingredients like Oxybenzone which have been reported to be found in breastmilk.

Our sunscreen can be used on newborns and babies under six months. We do, however, recommend a skin patch test on the inside of the wrist first just to be safe. Whilst we are not a huge advocate for taking newborns out in the sun before three months, we do understand that sometimes it is unavoidable. Precautions like staying out of the sun between 10am and 2pm, covering the skin and staying in the shade are also an essential part of sun protection, especially for that precious new skin.”

Petite Skin Co. breaks the mould with skincare that doesn’t treat pre-teen skin like mini adults, but instead focuses on what young, growing skin really needs to thrive. With a playful yet scientifically driven approach, Petite Skin Co. crafts skincare designed to respect the unique structure of pre-teen skin, ensuring every product is as safe as it is effective. We create skincare that grows with your child, designed to adapt to the changing needs of pre-teen skin without overwhelming it with unnecessary ingredients. Our products at Petite Skin Co. are designed specifically with the unique needs of children’s skin in mind, using gentle, natural ingredients that nurture and protect developing skin without causing irritation. Petite Skin Co. is redefining skincare for the next generation, offering a minimalist approach that prioritises balance, hydration,

We’ve stripped away the noise and unnecessary additives, focusing on what really matters: gentle, purposeful skincare made specifically for kids with growing skin. We avoid harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, and strong active ingredients commonly found in adult skincare products, ensuring that our formulations are mild enough for younger, more sensitive skin. While our products are perfect for pre-teens and teens, it’s always best to consult with a paediatrician before using skincare on babies, as their skin is even more delicate and may require more specialised care. In general, our products are crafted to be safe for children from the age of five, focusing on nourishing and supporting their skin without overwhelming it. Petite Skin Co, products are free from parabens, sulphates, artificial fragrances and pesticides. Skincare shouldn’t be complicated for pre-teens, and that’s why Petite Skin Co. offers a streamlined range that’s intuitive, gentle, and perfect for building lifelong habits.”

Exciting Plans For Medik8

We chat to Medik8’s Head of Product, HANNAH BIGGERSTAFF, about her role and plans for Medik8.

What does your role at Medik8 entail?

Good question, every day is completely different. I lead a team of part skin scientists and part product developers who are more marketing focused, who come together to create the Medik8 products, ultimately. So my job and my purpose in Medik8 is to make the most innovative, interesting, but also consumer friendly products as well. We focus very hard on the innovation, the technologies in our products. At the heart of Medik8 is the consumer, and so we’re really tailoring our products to our consumer and what they want from a skincare product. We’re usually working on a threeyear roadmap new product development; it takes a long time to bring out products, but we’re looking at researching in new ingredients, and developing new innovations within skincare.

We have a team of skincare scientists who are looking at everything around optimising ingredients in the skin. How can we deliver vitamin C in a different way? How can we stabilise it in a different way? How can we penetrate it in a different way? How can we pair it with something to maximise its potential? And then we also have the marketing side, how can we take that interesting science and innovation and actually make it consumer friendly and make it into a beautiful product that the customer actually wants to use every day that they like? The experience of smells nice, feels nice, makes their skin look amazing, but is also ultimately going to deliver them results.

So there’s always a way to improve products, would you say?

Sometimes, yeah, but oftentimes it’ll be completely brand new products. So it might be that we’ve seen a new innovation in science, or that we’ve developed something ourselves that we want to put into a product. But it also might be that we’re taking existing products and making them better, because science moves on, things change. We do more research. Ultimately, we’re learning all the time. We’re always testing things to check that we’re ultimately going to be the best on the market. So there’s always potential for us to upgrade and change and tweak and find new ways to communicate to our customers as well.

Tell us about Medik8’s newest product, Crystal Retinal 24.

We’ve got the highest rate from the ladder launching. So Crystal Retinal 24 is clinic exclusive. So that means that only people who have been on the Crystal Retinal ladder for a while and who are very experienced users will be able to move up to that highest strength. And that’s very purposefully done. What we really don’t want to be

is a brand who kind of just throws very high strength ingredients to consumers who are not ready for it, because, the skin barrier is so important to us.

We really want to make sure that we’re supporting the health of the skin. So it’s really important that our customers are starting low, going slow, and that ultimately means that they can get to those really high concentrations and those incredible results, but without having retinisation, the irritation that a lot of consumers really worry about. So that’s the premise behind it. But we’re really excited to go that high when there’s definitely been a lot of consumer appetite for it. So it’s nice to be able to offer that slightly higher percentage just for the people who are really looking to intensify their results.

And you’re currently in the process of having a TGA certified manufacturing site in the UK, tell us about that.

Currently, in our non Australia range, we have a product called Advanced Day Total Protect, which is an SPF 50 everywhere else in the world, but in Australia, because sunscreen rules and regulations are very complex and very rightly so, we can’t class it as a sunscreen product, because there are certain criteria for the TGA that we haven’t jumped through yet, but we are in the process of becoming a TGA certified manufacturing facility on our UK manufacturing site, which is very, very difficult. It has taken us over three years, and we have lots of exciting sunscreens in the mix coming soon, as well as an exciting development in professional treatments, because as a brand, we’re very professionally centered, so stay tuned.

5 Important Considerations To Treat Menopausal Skin

Understanding the unique needs of menopausal skin with Emepelle.

Skin changes during (peri-) menopause are often overlooked or misunderstood, yet they have a profound impact on both the appearance and texture of the skin. As oestrogen levels decline, skin becomes susceptible to a range of issues that require targeted intervention. Further to this, we explore five key concerns of menopausal skin and highlight how Emepelle’s innovative skincare line can make a difference for women navigating this stage of life.

Dryness

One of the earliest signs of oestrogen deficiency is a significant increase in skin dryness. Reduced oestrogen levels result in a decrease in natural oil production, which compromises the skin’s barrier function. This leads to a lack of moisture retention, causing the skin to feel tight, rough, and uncomfortable. Conventional moisturisers might offer temporary relief, but they don’t address the root cause. Emepelle’s MEP Technology™ is specifically formulated to target these changes, helping to restore moisture balance at a cellular level for lasting hydration.

Loss of Elasticity

Oestrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining collagen and elastin levels in the skin. During menopause, declining oestrogen levels accelerate the loss of these key proteins, causing the skin to thin and lose its firmness. In the first five years of menopause, women can lose up to 30% of their dermal collagen, resulting in sagging and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Emepelle’s MEP Technology™ is clinically proven to mimic the effects of oestrogen on the skin without systemic side effects, helping to slow down collagen loss and support the skin’s natural structure and firmness.

Increased Sensitivity

Hormonal fluctuations during menopause can make the skin more prone to irritation and sensitivity. The protective barrier weakens, leaving the skin exposed to environmental stressors and allergens that can lead to redness, itchiness, and discomfort. Emepelle’s formulations are designed to be gentle yet effective, reducing the risk of sensitivity while providing the nourishment menopausal skin needs to maintain its health and resilience.

Pigmentation and Uneven Tone

Menopausal women may also notice an increase in pigmentation issues, such as age spots and uneven skin tone. Oestrogen helps regulate melanocyte activity; the cells responsible for producing melanin. When oestrogen levels drop, melanocytes can become overactive, resulting in hyperpigmentation. Emepelle’s MEP Technology™ not only supports collagen production but also helps regulate melanocyte activity, promoting a more even and radiant complexion.

Dullness and Lack of Radiance

Reduced oestrogen levels can contribute to a lack of radiance, leaving the skin looking dull and tired. The decline in oestrogen impairs the skin’s ability to regenerate, slowing down the cell turnover process. This results in a build-up of dead skin cells, which further contributes to a lack of glow. Emepelle’s unique formulations include potent antioxidants and skin-brightening agents that work to rejuvenate and restore the skin’s natural vitality and radiance.

Emepelle’s Breakthrough Solution: MEP Technology™

Emepelle is the first and only skincare line globally that features revolutionary MEP Technology™, a non-hormonal molecule that addresses collagen loss in oestrogen-deficient skin. This innovative technology is clinically proven to provide oestrogen-like benefits exclusively for the skin without systemic effects, making it a safe and effective solution for menopausal women. By activating the oestrogen receptor pathway in the skin, MEP Technology™ helps replenish lost collagen, hydrate the skin, and improve overall texture and tone.

Why Emepelle Stands Out

While many skincare products focus on the surface symptoms of ageing, Emepelle is different because it tackles the root cause— oestrogen-deficient skin. Other anti-ageing treatments might help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but they do not address the structural and functional changes that occur due to a drop in oestrogen levels. Emepelle’s MEP Technology™ bridges this gap by delivering targeted benefits directly to the skin’s oestrogen receptors, promoting healthier, more youthful-looking skin.

Why Teeth Whitening Is The Perfect ‘Gateway Treatment’ At Your Spa Or Clinic

LENA SMITS explains the regulations around cosmetic teeth whitening, and why her stockists love offering it at their clinics and medispas

The teeth whitening industry in Australia has undergone a remarkable evolution over the past decade, driven by changing consumer attitudes, technological advancements, and evolving regulations.

A decade ago, teeth whitening was primarily reserved for special occasions like weddings. Today, a whiter, brighter smile is seen as a symbol of attractiveness and good health, significantly boosting self-confidence and influencing social perception. The portrayal of perfect smiles in media and advertising has set high societal expectations, leading many to believe that achieving a whiter smile is essential.

I founded Pure Smile with my brother Jan Slavicek in 2014 with the mission of providing affordable teeth whitening solutions. Since May 1, 2013, teeth whitening products containing concentrations greater than 6% hydrogen peroxide or more than 18% carbamide peroxide can only be dispensed by registered dental practitioners. In response to these regulations, the company has expanded to nearly 300 clinics and dozens dental practices across Australia.

What sets PureSmile apart in the teeth whitening market is our unwavering commitment to quality. Our formulations are natural and non-toxic, available in various hydrogen peroxide strengths tailored for both cosmetic clinics and dental professionals. All our products are made in the USA, vegan, and cruelty-free – attributes increasingly sought after by today’s consumers.

Our treatments are straightforward and deliver instant results that customers appreciate. In less than an hour, you can achieve a noticeably whiter smile. This service complements other offerings such as nail care, lash and brow services, and electrical muscle stimulation, just to name a few. Offering teeth whitening at your medispa also gives you the opportunity to tap into a market of consumers who may not have tried advanced skin or body treatments yet, but who will be able to learn more about your offering while having their teeth whitened. It’s not uncommon for PureSmile clients to book in for other treatments before they leave.

No other teeth whitening brand connects clients to treatment providers quite like we do. Our website serves as a dedicated booking platform, linking tens of thousands of customers to our partners. We recently spoke with our resident dentist, Dr. Tushaan Bhindi, a 2004 graduate of Sydney University:

“Since opening my first clinic, my passion has been whitening everyone’s teeth! As an aspiring cosmetic dentist, I aimed to refine

my skills. I’ve always loved smiles – the confidence they bring and the transformations I can create. I’ve dedicated years to understanding the various concentrations of teeth whitening gels and how they interact with teeth to achieve optimal results. After thousands of smile makeovers, I know there is no one-size-fits-all solution. There’s a science to it; what works for one person may not work for another. With PureSmile, I offer solutions ranging from 6% to 38% hydrogen peroxide.

These days, I find that I can achieve excellent results with 6% or 16% concentrations, often with minimal to no sensitivity. Both my patients and I are pleased with the outcomes. PureSmile offers a comprehensive and practical solution. Here’s to achieving whiter teeth and discovering effective ways to maintain them—while still enjoying your spaghetti and turmeric lattes!”

We also received feedback from Katalin Hegedus, the owner of SwanSkin and Body Solutions in Richmond, Melbourne:

“At SwanSkin and Body Solutions, we offer a diverse range of services for skin, body, and overall well-being. One of our most soughtafter treatments is teeth whitening. To provide our customers with the best products and services, we proudly use the PureSmile brand, renowned for its effectiveness and proven results.

For the past five years, we have enjoyed a successful partnership with PureSmile and Lena Smits, fostering a strong relationship that benefits both our businesses. Their referral and booking system is efficient, user-friendly, and highly profitable.

The PureSmile products are exceptional, featuring a world-class teeth whitening system. Thanks to our collaboration with PureSmile, SwanSkin and Body Solutions has experienced consistent monthly growth. Shortly after we began this partnership, the demand for our services soared, prompting us to invest in an additional teeth whitening machine to better serve our customers. Lena is a dynamic businesswoman who always stays one step ahead, ensuring that both customers and providers are satisfied.”

How

CFrom Skincare Line To Successful Clinic

A MELIA GOFF transformed Fresh Face Skin into a Melbourne success story.

reating a successful skincare brand in today’s crowded market takes more than just great products – it requires a deep understanding of clients’ needs, a clear vision, and unwavering dedication.

Amelia Goff, the founder of Fresh Face Skin, embodies all these qualities. Drawing on her experience as a dermal therapist, Amelia saw a gap in the market for natural, results-driven skincare that was both simple and affordable. From there, she developed Fresh Face Skin, a brand focused on empowering clients through effective, toxin-free products.

Today, Amelia has not only built a skincare range but also successfully launched her Melbourne clinic, Fresh Face Skin Salon, where her holistic approach to skin health continues to thrive. Below, she shares her journey from product creation to clinic success, offering insights and inspiration for fellow beauty and wellness professionals.

What inspired you to start your own skincare line, despite the number of other brands on the market?

At the time, I had been working as a dermal therapist for six years, treating clients and addressing a wide range of skin concerns. It was here that I witnessed first hand, the sense of overwhelm and confusion clients felt, when it came to starting a skincare routine and selecting the right products for their skin needs.

my products. Fresh Face Skin began with just three key products. Now, seven years later, we have a product range of 14 and growing – allowing our range to be buildable, while providing our customers with options for all skin needs and concerns.

the ground up. My only form of marketing then, was word of mouth and brochures in the hairdressing salon that my room was rented from. When you provide quality experiences, that’s all the marketing you need. After just ten months of working alone, I hired my first employee. I had so many new clients wanting appointments, I couldn’t keep up with the appointments alone and after just six months of sharing the room with change over shifts and seven days a week, we opened up our then 5-treatment room salon, creating more space, to allow us to expand and grow. I now have a team of 14, Fresh Face Skin Salon has 7 treatment rooms and a client base of over 5,000 and pinch myself daily for the success I have and the journey that has been.

Share with us how you navigate both businesses.

I could see what we were purchasing the products for via the wholesale cost price, vs what the client was paying and it shocked me just how much these professional-grade skincare products were marked up. I also found many clients had a misconception around natural skincare. I often had clients make comments on how ‘natural skincare doesn’t work’,  so being a lover of skincare and specifically skincare raw ingredients, I made it my goal to educate these clients on the power of natural ingredients.

I wanted to make a skincare range that was 100% natural and toxic free, while being simple and affordable. For me, creating Fresh Face Skin makes real skin results

How did your initial business then venture into starting your own clinic?

When I first launched Fresh Face Skin skincare, I stepped back from treating to focus on the launch of my range. After one year I began to miss treating skin hands-on, after all, skin has always been my true passion and interacting with clients on their skin journeys, brought me so much joy. So I listened to the inner calling and rented a room in a local hairdressing salon and began my journey to what is now Fresh Face Skin salon!

I had not one client but was determined to bring my passion, expertise and knowledge to my treatment room, building my clientele from

Finding the right people within your business is key. Your team need to believe in your purpose, mission, values and vision, just as much as you do. To me, nurturing relationships with industry experts that have helped get Fresh Face Skin to where it is today, is key to our success. I work alongside our product formulator, who has been with Fresh Face Skin since the very beginning, who takes my vision and brings it to life. My constant product research and interest in the skincare industry and natural ingredients, as well as always being open to our customer feedback, is what has led to our product expansion over the last seven years, now offering 14 products within our range, with more in the works, to come.

For me, my day-to-day life managing both the online skincare range and salon is forever changing. Having a team of 14, an in-salon clientele of over 5,000 and a forever growing national customer base for our online range, is a constant juggle, but one I am forever grateful for.

I get to do what I love and nurture and empower the passionate professionals within my team and my Fresh Face Skin community. What a gift it is.

Dermalogica’s Groundbreaking New Treatments

Discover LuminFusion and Melanopro Peel

LuminFusion

LuminFusion is Dermalogica’s latest highly-effective, non-invasive skin resurfacing treatment designed to restore skin’s luminosity, refine texture, and minimise signs of ageing without the need for downtime.

Key Features and Benefits

1. Enhanced Skin Luminosity: LuminFusion focuses on reviving the natural glow of the skin. It does this by utilising high-tech modalities such as NanoInfusion with a micro-needling device, which delivers active ingredients deep into the skin, and LED red light therapy, known for stimulating cellular repair and increasing collagen production.

2. Refinement of Skin Texture: One of the primary objectives of LuminFusion is to refine the skin’s texture, making it smoother and more even. The NanoInfusion process creates microchannels in the skin that allow for better absorption of active ingredients. This improves cell turnover and exfoliates the skin gently yet effectively, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture.

3. Targeted Anti-Ageing Action: LuminFusion also tackles the visible signs of skin ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles. The combination of Retinol, a gold-standard anti-ageing ingredient, with advanced infusion techniques ensures that the skin benefits from this potent treatment without irritation or downtime. The treatment works to minimise fine lines, tighten the skin, and boost overall firmness, delivering a more luminous appearance.

4. No Downtime, Immediate Results: Unlike invasive resurfacing procedures, LuminFusion offers the significant advantage of being gentle on the skin while still delivering noticeable results. Clients can expect to leave the treatment with an immediate glow, enhanced skin smoothness, and no recovery time needed. This makes it an ideal choice for those seeking a quick but effective skin refresh before important events or for regular maintenance of their skin health.

Treatment Process

LuminFusion begins with a thorough cleansing and exfoliation of the skin to remove impurities and prep the skin for maximum product absorption. Following this, the NanoInfusion device is used to create microchannels in the skin, allowing a highly concentrated Retinol Peel to penetrate deeper layers. This targeted peel aids in accelerating skin renewal, promoting collagen production, and reducing pigmentation. To further enhance the treatment’s efficacy, red LED

light therapy is applied, which helps calm inflammation, stimulate skin repair, and increase skin elasticity.

Melanopro Peel

Does your clinic offer comprehensive options to safely target all forms of hyperpigmentation on all skin tones? Our natural (or “constitutive”) skin colour is the basic melanin content of our skin that we genetically inherit. Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanin – the brown pigment responsible for creating all skin colours – is deposited in greater than usual amounts. The most common forms of hyperpigmentation are melasma, sun spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation treatments have boomed in the last ten years, but many are either not strong enough or can trigger unwanted reactions – especially among people with darker skin tones who are prone to PIH. The solution: Melanopro Peel System

It’s a clinical-strength peel program that delivers visible results in less than six weeks. This transformative 2-phase regimen works to visibly counteract environmental skin damage, fading dark spots, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, and smoothing skin’s texture to reveal fresh, brighter skin.

Treatment process

Phase 1 – in clinic

Intensive Peeling Masque (Day 1)

• Professional application (45min)

• Removed at home (4-7 hours later)

Phase 2 – at home

Resurfacing Moisturiser (4-6 weeks)

• Home applications: 2-3 times daily

• Day 1-6: flaking

• Day 7-15: adjustment

• Day 16-48: results peak

Ingredients include Azelaic Acid, Tranexamic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Retinol, Niacinamide, Acetyl Hexapeptide-1. These ingredients have been carefully selected to have an impact on the production and delivery of melanin within the epidermis reducing the appearance of pigmentation, as well as being known skin resurfacers to improve skin texture. The Collagen Supplement Made For Skin Professionals

You don’t have to compete with supermarkets when

With the supplement market becoming increasingly saturated, it is important to offer your patients an ingestible product that works, and that has a point of difference compared to what patients can purchase at retailers. This is where ProDermaCol® comes in.

ProDermaCol®, is a new professional dermal collagen product of Optimisation Group Pty Ltd. With 25+ years of protein supplementation expertise supplying postsurgery patients and hospitals with inpatient dietary care, their experience provided a unique opportunity to develop a specialised collagen supplement product tailored for the aesthetic industry.

ProDermaCol® is manufactured in Australia using the highest grade of collagen available from Germany. The proprietary, OptiCol35® is a Bovine Collagen that has been hydrolysed. The Hydrolysed Collagen Peptides ensure that ProDermaCol® provides optimum recovery from dermal procedures and visible skin rejuvenation.

ProDermaCol®’s Hydrolysed Collagen Peptides offer vastly improved absorption and bioavailability due to its smaller peptide size as opposed to standard collagen. This makes it easier for the body to digest and absorb, maximising their benefits for overall skin health and tissue repair. Combining OptiCol35® with scientifically-backed ingredients that are essential in aiding posttreatment recovery, makes ProDermaCol the ingestible collagen of choice for clinics.

ProDermaCol®: Scientifically formulated

ProDermaCol® has been specifically designed to nourish, revitalise and hydrate skin

recovering from dermal treatments. The formula incorporates premium German low molecular weight Hydrolysed Collagen Peptides blended with Vitamin C, Vitamin A (as retinol equivalents), Vitamin E, Biotin, Hyaluronic Acid, Coenzyme Q10, and Zinc. These scientifically backed ingredients work synergistically to enhance skin healing and recovery from dermal treatments, and optimum skin rejuvenation benefits. ProDermaCol® is manufactured in Australia under the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Code (FSANZ) ensuring ingredients and all their respective quantities are safe and regulated.

How it supports dermal treatments

Hydrolysed collagen, also known as collagen peptides, is produced by breaking down collagen into smaller peptide chains through enzymatic hydrolysis. This process involves using specific enzymes, such as proteases, to cleave the peptide bonds in the collagen protein, resulting in smaller peptide chains and free amino acids.

During hydrolysis, the collagen molecules are broken into shorter peptide chains, including dipeptides, tripeptides, and oligopeptides. The enzymes continue to break these peptide bonds, releasing individual amino acids, including branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) like leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These smaller peptides and free amino acids are now in a form that the body can readily absorb and utilise.

The smaller peptides and amino acids are absorbed through the intestinal lining into the bloodstream, where their reduced molecular size allows for easier and more efficient absorption compared to intact or standard collagen. Once in the bloodstream, these

peptides and amino acids are transported to various tissues, such as the skin where they contribute to collagen synthesis and other physiological processes.

The absorbed amino acids, including the BCAAs, are used by cells to synthesise new collagen and other proteins necessary for tissue repair, growth, and maintenance. These peptides and amino acids support the repair and regeneration of tissues, enhancing skin elasticity, joint health, and the overall structural integrity of the body.

In-Clinic Partnerships Only

ProDermaCol® offers partnerships with aesthetic professionals in the dermal treatment industry including Dermal Therapists, Medispas, Aesthetic Medical Practitioners, Plastic Surgeons, Beauty Clinics and Skin and Laser Clinics. Their history with dietitians in hospitals and private practice in relation to protein dietary needs showed the benefits of synergistic professional partnerships.

ProDermaCol® does NOT supply supermarkets, health Stores, pharmacy or bulk online discount websites. Partners stock ProDermaCol® for in-clinic sales, collagen shots and their online stores. An affiliate program is also available for partners who promote online but need us to dispatch their online store orders. The supplement has a long shelf life with an affordable retail price point and provides a great return on investment. For more information, visit prodermacol.com.au

A Slice Of Paradise

NADINE DILONG experiences a face and body treatment at Raes Spa in Byron Bay

Byron Bay has my heart. I have been to this slice of paradise many times and truly consider it one of my favourite places on earth. And within Byron, Wategos Beach is my go-to place to relax and unwind, so it’s kismet that it’s also home to one of Australia’s most exclusive spas at Raes, the chic boutique hotel frequented by celebs and locals alike. I was fortunate to experience a facial and body massage at the spa recently and was particularly excited as the spa exclusively uses Rationale skincare – arguably one of Australia’s finest exports. The spa is small, but mighty, consisting of only a handful of rooms and narrow hallways that give it an exceptionally cozy feel, almost as if you entered a cave thanks to the stone clad walls.

My therapist Natalie greets me and sits down in the consultation are with me as she offers me a glass of water and shows me the changing room. She then discusses my skin concerns with me in depth, asking about my current routine, products I use, and what I would like to achieve for my skin today. I can see her analysing everything I say in her head to come up with my very own customised Rationale regime, using products according to the brand’s trusted ‘Essential Six Collection’ that can be tailored to any skin type and concern.

Natalie also chooses which products she will use during my facial that day, according to what she just learned about my skin. After I change, she guides me into the treatment room and explains that we will start with a pregnancy massage (I am 24 weeks pregnant at the time of treatment), using a large pregnancy pillow which actually allows me to lie on my stomach. The bed is soft and plush and oh so comfortable. Natalie focuses on the areas of the body that I feel need the

kneading most and ends the massage with my scalp, which is always my favourite part.

Then, I turn around to have my facial. The familiar scent of Rationale products fills my nostrils as Natalie cleanses and once again, analyses my skin to choose the best products for me. We focus on hydration while also clarifying my slightly bumpy and congested skin (hello, pregnancy hormones!). To revitalise, Natalie uses a Cryo device to cool down my skin and promote circulation. The metal applicator feels extremely cold but so smooth and glides around my skin effortlessly, reducing my redness and calming my skin.

The massage movements Natalie uses on my face are gentle but precise, turning my head sideways every now and then and massaging my neck and shoulders as part of the treatment too. It feels relaxing, effortless, and exactly like what the doctor ordered. The facial ends with 15 minutes under LED light as my hands and arms enjoy a massage too. After about 90 minutes, my treatment comes to an end and Natalie hands me my personalised Rationale products to use at home.

I pinch myself as I feel so lucky to have experienced a beautiful face and body treatment in a spa that is literally nestled on one of the world’s most pristine beaches with whales playing in the far distance as I exit the building. What a special experience.

Dr Michael Zacharia

Being an ENT and Surgeon, Dr Michael Zacharia thought it was extremely important to have a Medispa joined to his surgical practice in Double Bay, allowing patients the best opportunity to prevent or prepare the skin prior to surgery. Post-surgery, patients often experience a journey of patience while healing, and having a Medispa helps support and often speed up patients’ healing process. Helping patients physically and mentally,  providing them a next step and something to look forward to during their post-op period is beneficial to their entire experience. Dr Zacharia’s Medispa services include Neogen skin resurfacing / scar management, light therapy, Emface, Ultraformer, skin needling and medical grade skincare.

Dr Zacharia has seen patients postpone their surgery as improvement of skin quality through non-surgical treatments can make a huge difference for patients and sometimes even delay surgery! Dr Zacharia puts this down to the fact that technology has greatly improved over the years.

The Sustainable Skincare Revolution with ELEMIS

Gone are the days when sustainability was a coveted buzzword. Today, it’s a lifestyle choice driving many consumers’ purchasing decisions. This informed demographic looks beyond product claims to understand the real impact of the brands they support, shifting focus if it doesn’t align.

Enter ELEMIS, the iconic British skincare brand leading the charge in creating products that care for both the environment and the skin. Known for its luxurious formulations that marry science with nature, ELEMIS focuses on reducing environmental impact while delivering results-driven skincare. Setting a new standard for conscious beauty, ELEMIS is paving the way for a future where beauty is as kind to the environment as it is to the skin.

“We’re proud to make a tangible difference that benefits both our stockists and the planet” – Katie Lowndes, ELEMIS Spa Distributor ANZ

“Our commitment to sustainability is at the core of everything we do,” says Katie Lowndes, ELEMIS Spa Distributor ANZ. “From using 100% renewable energy across our facilities to eliminating unnecessary plastics and transitioning to fully recyclable packaging, we’re proud to make a tangible difference that benefits both our stockists and the planet.”

ELEMIS recently achieved B Corp certification and became a finalist in the Best Sustainable Skincare category at the Spa & Wellness Awards – recognition that underscores the brand’s dedication to sustainable innovation.

Bold Steps for a Better Planet

ELEMIS’ commitment to sustainability is not just words – it’s action. Since achieving B Corp status, ELEMIS has continued to innovate, balancing luxury skincare with environmental responsibility. “We have moved to 100% renewable energy across our offices and warehouses, ensuring our operations are as green as possible,” says Katie.

The brand has also taken significant steps in its packaging and product sustainability initiatives. In 2021, ELEMIS removed product leaflets, saving an estimated 13 tonnes of paper annually. The transition to plastic-free Dynamic Resurfacing Pads has reduced plastic waste by 1.3 tonnes each year, and eliminating plastic spatulas has saved an additional 1.7 tonnes of plastic. Moreover, protective bubble wrap used in online orders has been replaced with paper wrap, cutting down on plastic waste by a further 11 tonnes.

“We’ve taken a hard look at every element of our packaging to

eliminate waste wherever possible,” adds Katie. “Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for clients to choose products that align with their values without compromising on the luxurious experience they expect from ELEMIS.”

Once clients receive their products, ELEMIS provides clear recycling instructions online, ensuring consumers are informed on how to dispose of their packaging properly to further reduce environmental impact.

Eco-friendly packaging is just one aspect of the brand’s sustainability mission – what’s in their products counts, too. ELEMIS’ hero product, ProCollagen Marine Cream, is created with sustainably sourced marine and plant-based ingredients.

“Ingredients are at the heart of what we do,” Katie explains. “We ensure that everything we source is done so responsibly. Our Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, for example, uses marine and plant-based extracts that provide incredible results and respect our planet’s natural resources.”

Commitment Beyond Skincare

ELEMIS’ dedication to social responsibility extends beyond skincare. As part of its B Corp mission, ELEMIS supports charitable initiatives, from promoting women’s health to reforestation projects, ensuring every action aligns with its vision of a healthier planet. By choosing ELEMIS, consumers invest not only in their skin but also in global wellbeing.

“Our commitment to the planet isn’t just about what’s in our jars,” Katie says. “It’s also about giving back to communities and supporting causes that make a difference globally. We want our clients to know that when they choose ELEMIS, they are supporting a brand that truly cares.”

The wellness industry is evolving, and ELEMIS proudly proves that high-performance beauty can align with eco-consciousness. With a commitment to clean beauty, ethical sourcing, and sustainable packaging, ELEMIS sets a new standard for products in the industry.

Whether you’re new to sustainable skincare or already an advocate, ELEMIS’ dedication to both people and the planet makes them an ideal choice for therapists and clients alike who want to indulge in luxury skincare without compromising on their values.

This Is Australia’s First CynoGlow Clinic

We chat to DR WILL GUO from Meyer Cosmetic Clinic on becoming Australia’s first CynoGlow clinic.

Meyer Clinic was established in 2016 and is a high-end beauty clinic in Sydney with a professional medical background, offering face and body treatments. Led by Dr Will Guo, Meyer’s professional medical team is managed by a number of Australian AHPRA registered doctors and Australian registered nurses and has the latest high-end optoelectronic equipment.

Offering the latest treatments, Meyer prides itself on being a Cynosure partner and is, in fact, Australia’s first CynoGlow Clinic. CynoGlow is a customisable, sequential treatment plan utilising the most advanced picosecond laser, Picosure Pro and radio frequency micro-needling technology, Potenza. Cynoglow is a bi-layered treatment plan that targets the superficial and deeper layers of the skin. PicoSure Pro laser treatments are highly targeted, which means

Dr

any risk of damage is contained and minimised. For this reason, PicoSure Pro is extremely safe and can be applied to any area of the face. With the Platinum Focus Lens this fractional picosecond laser treatment is effective and safe to get glowing skin and give a fresh and youthful appearance.

Potenza consists of ultra-fine needles and RF energy to penetrate the top layer of the skin and trigger the body’s natural healing process to regenerate new collagen and elastin, which will tighten and firm your skin via soft tissue coagulation. The CynoGlow treatment can effectively improve skin texture, pore size, active acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles.

We spoke to Dr Will Guo to learn more about his partnership with Cynosure.

Dr Guo, please tell us about yourself and how you came to open Meyer Beauty Clinic?

Before opening Meyer, we had been working in the medical field for a few years, and in the cosmetic beauty field we have felt confident that we are helping others be the best that they can be and helping to increase their confidence and self-esteem, that was our original motivation to open Meyer Cosmetic Beauty Clinic.

What makes Meyer Beauty Clinic stand out?

To be honest, the CynoGlow treatment makes Meyer Beauty Clinic stand out, since it delivers

really great result to clients, which then increases their confidence to keep purchasing other skin treatments with us.

What are some of the most common skin concerns you treat?

We are doing quite well at treating lines and wrinkles, facial skin laxity, acne and acne scars, and skin rejuvenation.

Why did you decide to purchase both the PicoSure Pro and the Potenza devices?

Cynosure is one of the top brands in the market, as it develops and manufactures

Will Guo at his clinic in Sydney

a diverse range of energy-based aesthetic and medical treatment applications for skin revitalisation, scar reduction, body contouring, and more. And during the conversation with sales manager Renee, we felt really confident about the products’ quality and the service and marketing support afterwards.

Cynosure and us have the same purpose: to provide customers with the best and most professional services; we believed the two machines combined together would surely deliver great results.

What is CynoGlow, and what skin issues do you treat with it?

We effectively treat acne, acne scars and overall skin rejuvenation with CynoGlow, which combines the PicoSure Pro and Potenza treatments, so laser and RF micro-needling.

How easy are the devices to use?

The Cynosure team members, Sandra and Renee, have been giving us support all the time and we always have discussions with the Cynosure surgical education team on how to upgrade and provide better results for clients.

What are some of your patients’ feedback on their CynoGlow treatments?

The feedback so far has been 100% positive with many patients coming back for more treatments.

What kind of support does Cynosure offer you?

The Cynosure team offer marketing, technical, and educational support to us.

How does it feel being Australia’s FIRST CynoGlow clinic?

We are really proud of being the first CynoGlow Clinic in Australia. During these two years, the CynoGlow combination treatment makes our job much easier because our clients can receive the great results in just one or two treatments, not only saving their time, but it’s less painful, which tends to be unexpected for most. All the clients who received CynoGlow treatment referred lots of their friends to us since they had great result. Why Customisation Is Key

JODIE KING , owner of Skin Clinic Blyss, tells us about the importance of using modalities that are customisable for each patient.

Jodie, why is customisation so important and how do you customise treatments using Universkin and your Cryomed modalities?

Customisation is crucial because every individual’s skin is unique, influenced by factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental exposure – as well as preference. Not everyone wants a 10-step routine. What works for one person may not be suitable for another. At Skin Clinic Blyss, we use Universkin because it allows us to tailor skincare formulations to each client’s needs. With almost 2 million possible combinations and 19 active ingredients, we can treat a wide range of skin concerns, from acne to pigmentation to ageing. Our Cryomed technologies, such as our Ultraformer MPT also allows for customisation, targeting specific layers of the skin for precise results. We can also combine these treatments with RF needling and lasers for greater results. This holistic, personalised approach ensures the most effective treatment plan, delivering results that suit each patient’s individual concerns and skin type.

What makes Universkin stand out compared to other skincare brands?

Where do I start!? Universkin stands out because it’s bespoke, evidence-based skincare that allows for true personalisation. Most skincare products are formulated to meet the average needs of a group –often with more than one product needed to deliver desired results, but Universkin allows us to create unique formulations tailored to a client’s specific skin condition in a single formulation. It’s backed by clinical research, and with its ability to adjust concentrations and combinations of active ingredients, we can address a variety of skin concerns at once. This level of customisation is unmatched by traditional skincare brands, making it a powerful tool in achieving real, visible results. We can change the formulation as your skin progresses or changes due to age and environmental changes.

You recently met Universkin founder Harry Arampatzis, what did you learn from him?

Meeting Harry Arampatzis was incredibly insightful. He has a deep understanding of the science behind skin and the role that tailored ingredients can play in transforming it. His philosophy aligns perfectly with ours at Skin Clinic Blyss – focusing on creating healthy skin from within by using the right actives at the right concentrations. His passion for innovation in skincare was truly inspiring and has reinforced our commitment to delivering evidence-based, personalised skincare solutions.

Why did you decide to upgrade to the new Ultraformer MPT and how does it differ from the earlier version?

We weren’t looking at upgrading at all; I was invited into the office to experience a treatment and was blown away firstly by how tolerable it was compared to the previous Ultraformer – and a faster treatment time, and I am not easily impressed, but also, how fast I saw results. I then made the decision to upgrade to the Ultraformer MPT because it offers significant advancements in both patient comfort and treatment results – from my experience. From an operator’s perspective, the new MPT provides more precise control, allowing us to tailor treatments more effectively. It uses micro and macro-focused ultrasound to target multiple skin depths, offering a combination of lifting, tightening, and skin rejuvenation. As well as this, the new booster cartridges allow us to target these treatments to the individual’s needs.

Patients benefit from the latest pain-reduction technology, making treatments more comfortable, with fewer side effects. The MPT also delivers faster, visible results, with improvements in skin texture and tightness immediately after the procedure. For us, this is crucial as we aim to provide the best, most efficient treatments available.

How does the MPT allow you to customise each treatment and what kind of results do you achieve in patients using the MPT?

The Ultraformer MPT’s ability to customise each treatment is one of its standout features. We can adjust parameters depending on the patient’s skin type and concerns, targeting everything from deep tissue lifting to surface-level skin tightening. With the addition of MP mode, we can further customise each treatment to contour where needed – in a controlled and precise delivery. This allows us to treat a wide range of conditions, from sagging skin to fine lines and wrinkles, all in one session. The results we’ve seen so far are outstanding. Patients notice an immediate improvement in skin firmness, with ongoing benefits as collagen production is stimulated over the following weeks. We are also seeing huge improvements in skin texture – particularly on top lip lines that are often difficult to treat.

What are you excited about in the aesthetics industry at the moment?

There’s so much innovation happening in the aesthetics space right now, but I’m particularly excited about the advancements in regenerative treatments. These treatments harness the body’s natural healing processes, offering results that are both powerful and long-lasting. Devices we use at the clinic are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in skin rejuvenation, and we can combine a lot of these treatments for far superior results. I’m also thrilled to see how technology is improving patient comfort and outcomes, as seen with the Ultraformer MPT. It’s an exciting time to be in aesthetics, with so many groundbreaking options to help clients achieve healthy, radiant skin. For more information, visit cryomed.com.au

Through the blend of monopolar RF and targeted ultrasound, it is the first technology to boost HA naturally in the skin without the requirement of injectables. Explore its full 3-in-1 potential in this exclusive interview with Dr Sean Arendse, Director of Flawless Rejuvenation Clinics.

Dr Sean Arendse, Director of Flawless Rejuvenation Clinics
“EXION is the first technology to boost HA naturally in the skin without the requirement of injectables.“

Why did you decide to acquire EXION into your practice?

The AI technology behind EXION was a real game changer in the RF needling landscape, we had all seen the great results that had been achieved by the standard RF devices but this usually came at a cost, and this cost was pain, which is why many clients found it difficult to continue with the prescribed treatment. This was not the case with EXION; because of the AI it employs, the treatments are extremely comfortable!

How does EXION complement your practice and the other modalities you have?

We have all seen a reduction in the amount of filler being used in our clinic and a massive shift to now focus on collagen stimulation and improving skin tone and texture. The EXION works synergistically with many if not all of the modalities we employ in our practice to address skin quality, and consistently deliver superior results for our clients.

EXION clinically proven results:

• 224% more hyaluronic acid¹

• 47% more collagen and 50% elastin production²

• 82% of patients found the microneedling treatment comfortable³

• 41% improvement in acne scars³

• 85% improvement in skin laxity⁴

• 96% patient satisfaction rate⁴

What do you believe are the most important features and advantages of this product?

The most important feature is that the EXION delivers results consistently and reproducibly in a very safe fashion so that I do not lose sleep worrying that we have harmed a client.

Who are the predominant EXION patients, and what areas do they most commonly seek to treat?

Most of our clients want to focus on improving facial skin quality, but we are starting to see more and more clients requesting that we treat skin beyond the face such as abdomens, arms and even knees.

What role will the non-invasive methods in facial aesthetics play in your opinion in the future?

I think that non-invasive methods with minimal downtime are what most of our clients are seeking, with their busy 24/7, 365 lifestyles. They want fast, pain-free treatments which allow them to get on with their lives but still get fantastic results, something that the EXION delivers in spades.

How would you summarise the support provided by BTL?

The support provided by BTL has been amazing from training of the staff to integration of the device into the clinic and business development to ensure we get our ROI. It has been an awesome experience being welcomed into the BTL family, and I can’t wait to partner with them on many more devices!

Our Suite Of Lutronic Devices

Mother-daughter duo GABRIELLA DA ROS and JAMILA ROBINS from Simply Skin & Laser share their success story using Lutronic devices.

Could you explain the criteria you used to select the aesthetic devices for your clinic?

We aimed to acquire a comprehensive range of medical-grade equipment to meet the diverse needs of our clients in the Wimmera Region. Being in the industry for 38 years, we reflected and ensured that we were able to treat conditions that are regularly presented to us, such as pigmentation and sun damage, rosacea and vascular concerns, unwanted hair, impaired skin barrier and loss of volume in the skin.

Based on our prior experience with standalone devices from various suppliers, we sought to streamline our approach by opting for a cohesive suite of devices from Lutronic. This allows us to deliver consistent, highquality treatments, ensuring that we can offer the most advanced, effective solutions tailored to each diagnosis.

What factors influenced your decision to choose Lutronic devices, and what made them stand out?

Lutronic offered a suite of devices that complemented each other perfectly, ensuring a cohesive and efficient approach to treatment. I was already familiar with Lutronic’s strong reputation for quality and innovation within the industry. Having previously worked with the Hollywood Spectra, Healite and other

Lutronic systems, I had firsthand experience with their superior performance and results. This familiarity and confidence in the brand made the decision to select Lutronic an easy and straightforward one for our clinic. Additional to their superior results and technology, the support and high level training provided for our team has assured us that we made the right choice with Lutronic.

What are some of the most popular treatments you offer using Lutronic devices?

At Simply Skin & Laser Clinic, we offer a range of highly sought-after treatments, including:

• Pigment correction

• Correction of acne scarring

• Hair removal

• Microneedling for skin tightening

• Vascular treatments, such as those for cherry angiomas and venous lakes

• Skin Toning

• LED light therapy

• Tattoo removal

Can you share any case studies with exceptional results?

We have achieved a number of successful outcomes in treatments such as skin tightening, pigment reduction, and hair removal, many of which have significantly

improved our clients’ quality of life. For example, we have treated a wide range of seborrheic keratoses across different areas of the body, which often helps alleviate our clients’ self-consciousness about these lesions.

One especially heartwarming case involved a young girl, with a large granuloma on her face. After just one treatment, there was a significant improvement, boosting her confidence and alleviating the emotional burnden caused by the condition.

The image in this article showcases a client from Simply Skin & Laser Clinic, where we effectively reduced her pigmentation and sun damage while enhancing her natural radiance by utilising a combination of our Lutronic devices.

What kind of support do you receive from Lutronic?

The support we receive from our Business Development Manager, Tegan, is exceptional — well beyond expectations. Her expertise in explaining and demonstrating the capabilities of each device has been invaluable, and she consistently addresses any questions we have with a genuine focus on our business and patients’ needs. Despite being in regional Victoria, Tegan visits us more frequently than any other Business Development Manager, which is a testament to her commitment. Additionally, Lutronic’s technical support is always readily available, offering assistance as soon as we reach out. This level of service is one of the key reasons we continue to invest in Lutronic technology.

Aerolase – Versatility, Visible Results, No Downtime

We

speak

with Beauty Technology Director

PHIL WILLMANN to find out just how exactly Aerolase delivers outstanding results without downtime.

How did you discover Aerolase and what made you decide to bring it to Australia?

My wife, a Cosmetic Physician, identified a need for advanced skin treatments in non-ablative and ablative treatments, but was disappointed with the options available in Australia due to subpar pre-sale service, treatment outcomes, and maintenance requirements. To address this gap, she provided me with a list of necessary indications, which I used to research superior alternatives globally. This search led me to discover Aerolase at IMCAS in Paris in 2023, a game-changing find that exceeded our expectations.

Please explain the significance of the 650-microsecond pulse width, and what depth and chromophore Aerolase treats. The 650-microsecond pulse width is central to Aerolase’s advanced technology. While this duration isn’t exclusive to the Neo Elite, Aerolase’s ability to deliver up to 255 J/cm² at 650 microseconds is unmatched by other devices. This pulse length is highly targeted, allowing the powerful laser energy to penetrate the skin without causing excess thermal damage, as it remains below the skin’s burning threshold of 800 microseconds. It reaches the appropriate depth to target melanin, hemoglobin, and water-based chromophores in the dermis. This precise pulse width enables treatments for pigmentation, vascular lesions, acne, and other skin conditions, while promoting neocollagenesis, all without harming surrounding tissue. The result is a treatment with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

How is it possible to have no downtime after the Aerolase treatment?

So it can be used even on darker skin?

Aerolase treatments are designed to be gentle yet powerful, targeting skin concerns without damaging the skin’s surface. The controlled energy delivered through the 650-microsecond pulse width ensures that heat is generated deep within the skin, where it’s needed most, while sparing the outer layers from overheating or trauma. This allows patients to return to their daily routines immediately following treatment without redness, swelling, or peeling, offering a true no-downtime experience that’s ideal for busy lifestyles.

“Aerolase is able to treat patients with darker skin tones without causing pigmentation issues.”

Aerolase’s Neo Elite laser is specifically engineered to treat all skin types, including darker skin tones and tanned skin, with maximum safety. While it does generate heat, its unique 650-microsecond pulse width ensures that the heat is confined to the targeted chromophores rather than diffusing throughout the skin. This precision prevents overheating of the epidermis, reducing the risk of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can be a concern with traditional lasers. By using such controlled energy, Aerolase is able to treat patients with darker skin tones without causing pigmentation issues.

What is some common feedback you get from practitioners who have decided to work with Aerolase?

Practitioners frequently highlight the versatility and reliability of the Aerolase Neo Elite. They appreciate the device’s ability to treat a wide range of skin conditions—from acne and melasma to unwanted hair and skin rejuvenation—without requiring multiple devices. The comfortable, no-downtime experience is often a standout feature for both practitioners and patients, helping clinics attract more clientele. Many practitioners also note the ease of use and how Aerolase fits seamlessly into their practice, making it a sound investment for both patient outcomes and business growth. Are Exosomes Better Than PRP?

Esthetica’s BNV Exosomes set a new benchmark for patient outcomes.

Exosome treatments are heavily researched and trialled for their immense potential to not only repair but also rejuvenate skin and hair. The nano-sized vesicles with their intercellular message properties have left the aesthetic industry with more questions. When it comes to advancing the benefits of exosome treatment, there is often a comparison made to Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment. Esthetica has collaborated with BNV Biolab to challenge the properties of exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) against PRP. We believe that exosome treatments have shown to provide advanced delivery with outstanding results, while empowering clinics with the right treatment to adapt to the everchanging market and confidently provide their services to aid skin health.

“Using an exosome treatment accompanying with aesthetic devices such as microneedling, radio frequency and fractional laser devices has shown to provide an accelerated, stronger and enhanced outcomes in patients”

Exosomes derived from MSCs contain a diverse range of bioactive molecules, proteins, nucleic acids and growth factors within their tiny cell-like structures that can comfortably penetrate in the skin. Esthetica has gone through great lengths to ensure the purity of the derived exosomes and ethically source them from neonatal dermal fibroblasts using mass spectrometry.

The neonatal dermal fibroblasts are mixed with growth medium and left in an incubator at 37°C with 5% CO2. With constant monitoring, the cells are let to culture and grow. The cultured cells are washed with trypsin and are exposed to further grow with Epidermal Growth factor (EGF) and Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) proteins and are called Dermal Fibroblasts Conditioned Medium (DFCM).

Researchers at Esthetica found different proteins in the DFCM where it is observed that 160 proteins were linked to wound healing and 57 proteins were connected to hair growth. These proteins were involved in important biological processes, such as wound healing and hair growth, through several well-known pathways like epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, integrins, and others. These pathways help control how cells grow, repair, and communicate.

Esthetica’s BNV Exo serum is a concentrated skin booster that contains over 300 proteins and 26 growth factors that allows clinics to get better outcomes with less material to truly target regenerative sites in skin. Dr. Sung Bin Cho commented ‘Using an exosome treatment accompanying with aesthetic devices such as microneedling, radio frequency and

fractional laser devices has shown to provide an accelerated, stronger and enhanced outcomes in patients’.

While offering a myriad of benefits, the well-researched PRP treatments, have been claimed to be lacking in comparison to exosome treatments. The rich protein filled nano sacs are smaller in size and can carry countless protein and growth factors with them in comparison to PRP. The effectiveness of PRP can be limited by factors such as the patient’s age and health. The purity of PRP heavily relies on the quality of life the patient experiences.

Exosomes derived from stem cells are not subject to extraction limitations making them versatile to work with. Exosomes are minimally processed and remove the need to extract cells by introducing enriched foreign protein medium to accelerate skin regeneration. Since the extraction for PRP treatments proceeds with collection of blood, manufacturing and administration process to patients, it is conjectured that PRP can be contaminated with microorganisms at some point in the series of the extraction process, leading to bacterial infection. It is important to take measures to preserve PRP to cross contamination, however, it is not clear on the processes of preserving PRP once contaminated. Additionally, PRP cannot be sterilised unlike exosomes.

Esthetica has identified the lack of this miraculous product in the Australian market and has commissioned to bridge the gap in the Australian Aesthetic industry by introducing BNV Exosomes. Esthetica’s BNV exosomes are processed in state-of-the-art facilities and are extensively screened for pathogens and contaminants delivering cellular regeneration, collagen production, anti-inflammatory effects and enhanced skin barrier like no other.

PRP treatments and exosome treatments have their place in regenerative aesthetics, but the advanced capabilities of exosome treatments set a new benchmark for efficacy and patient outcomes. Exosomes represent the next evolution in regenerative medicine, providing unparalleled results in skin rejuvenation, hair restoration, and beyond.

As the aesthetic industry continues to evolve, embracing innovative technologies like Esthetica’s BNV Exosomes will be key to staying at the forefront of patient care and achieving superior aesthetic results. For more information, visit estheticaacademy.com.au/bnv-exosomes/

“The Venus Versa Pro™ stood out to us for its innovative Radio Frequency technology and its versatility in treating delicate areas like under the eyes and the neck.”

Our aim is to provide a welcoming and unique environment where each client is treated as an individual.

What are some of the most common skin concerns you treat at Marque?

We have a “pro-ageing” approach to our treatments at Marque, focusing on subtle enhancements that embrace a more realistic approach to beauty. Naturally, we were eager to try the Venus Versa Pro™ due to the advanced Radio Frequency technology the machine has. Our practitioners love the versatility of the Versa Pro’s application. We find the machine safe and reliable with consistent results. We are able to treat delicate problem areas that are particularly prone to ageing, such as directly under the eyes and the neck.

independently as an Aesthetic Nurse as SILK has the structure in place to help nurses succeed both professionally and financially.

Safety is a huge priority for me and I am extremely confident in the processes and procedures that are in place at SILK. This was a big part of my decision to work with SILK. The Nurses Board, the Medical Advisory Committee and all of the right structure is in place to provide nurses with the safest workplaces for them and for patients. I also knew how fantastic SILK was at providing ongoing clinical training and support, which is very important for staying upto-date with new advances in the industry as well as keeping your skills sharp.

What was the process like of purchasing your own SILK clinic?

The process was quite seamless, and I had a lot of different people from SILK who supported me with the decision. As I had already dedicated my nursing career solely to cosmetic aesthetics for nearly 10 years, for me this was just the natural progression. I knew how much I loved it and that I wanted to spend the rest of my career in the specialty, and this was the next step to grow.

I also wanted to help share my passion by owning a piece of the business. I wanted to be a leader and help to shape the teams in a positive way and encourage and lift the team to reach their full potential as individuals. Owning a clinic and sharing my experience with my own team really drives me and I want to see the same success for

Opening My Own SILK Clinic

As the owner of SILK Eastlands in Tasmania, Nurse Jasmine shares why being a SILK clinic franchisee was the best decision for her.

my team as I have seen in my own career. I worked extremely hard building up my reputation as an Aesthetic Nurse, I believed in my skills and knew I would be successful as I am so passionate about what I do.

How has your clinic evolved and how does SILK support you?

Being a Tasmanian local, I can really connect with our clients. I am able to put a face to the brand here at Eastlands and personalise things for both my team and our clients. With me as the owner, I feel the clients are assured of the quality of treatments, as I am ultimately responsible for their experience with us, and I genuinely care and want to see them achieve the very best results. When people come to my clinic, they can be assured that they are going to receive, not only the best service, but also the best treatments and results.

SILK has been a great support. They have dedicated teams to assist you with basically everything and anything as a Franchise Partner. The structure is fantastic - Clinic Managers are assisted by Business Development Managers, who are assisted by Operations Leaders, the list goes on. Everyone at the Support Office is committed to your success.

Would you say it’s easier being part of a franchise than starting your business from scratch?

They are both very different approaches. This was something I weighed up for many, many years before making the decision to go with SILK. My colleagues I worked with at the Medispa in Sydney went on to create their own businesses as solo aesthetic nurses, which is always the path I thought I would choose.  I did like the idea of doing my own thing, as I would only have myself to be accountable for, rather than an entire team.

However, after injecting at SILK for 5 years I could see it was a very reliable company to partner with, and with well structured head office support teams. SILK also won Franchisor of the Year thanks to the work they do supporting their Franchise Partners.

The business has also impressed me with their values and it always feels like a family rather than a business. Ultimately, franchising with SILK allowed me to remain dedicated to doing what I love and what I am best at - aesthetics.  If I had started my own clinic independently, I would be spending so much of my time doing admin and marketing and everything else that goes along with it, I wouldn’t have nearly as much time treating, which is what I love most.

Understanding the New National Safety and Quality Cosmetic Surgery Standards

Purifas Owner and CEO IBRAHIM SAMAAN explains it all.

Patient safety is paramount in all aspects of your practice as a cosmetic surgery practitioner. With the release of the National Safety and Quality Cosmetic Surgery Standards (NSQCSS) in December 2023, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) has introduced significant updates to ensure all cosmetic surgery services in Australia adhere to the highest safety and quality standards.

While these changes may initially seem substantial, they are designed to enhance patient safety and improve the overall experience for both you and your clients. So, what do these new standards mean for your practice, and how can you ensure compliance? Continue reading to discover the key updates in the NSQCSS, understand the importance of these changes and learn practical steps to manage the implementation in your clinic.

Why are the new standards important?

In just five months in 2023, the Cosmetic Surgery Hotline received an eye-opening 111 calls from patients and practitioners reporting unsafe practices. This critical feedback led to the creation of the NSQCSS, designed to address safety gaps and set clear standards for cosmetic surgery clinics across Australia.

Accreditation for these services is expected to start in 2025, providing ample time to familiarise yourself with the new standards and implement the necessary updates. Adhering to these standards will ensure that your clinic delivers the highest level of care and safety for your patients.

What do the new standards cover — and what don’t they cover?

The NSQCSS covers all facilities where invasive cosmetic procedures, like breast augmentations, liposuction, and facelifts, are performed. Due to the increased risks linked to these procedures, the standards place a strong emphasis on patient safety.

However, these standards do not extend to non-invasive treatments like injectables or other non-surgical procedures.

In conjunction with the NSQCSS, you must also be familiar with two other key documents:

• Cosmetic Surgery Module (‘the Module’). This document supplements the NSQCSS, providing more detailed guidelines for cosmetic surgery services. It addresses additional safety measures and quality improvements tailored to the cosmetic industry.

• Guidelines for Registered Medical Practitioners Who Perform Cosmetic Surgery and Procedures. Issued by the Medical Board of Australia, these guidelines emphasise your responsibilities and ethical obligations. They also provide further direction on patient assessment, informed consent and post-operative care.

Practitioners can refer to the Map of the Cosmetic Surgery Standards 5 to compare the cosmetic surgery standards and the NSQHS standards.

What you should focus on

The NSQCSS introduces new requirements to ensure procedures are conducted in licensed, accredited facilities. Some updates include:

• Pre-surgery psychological assessments

You must now use validated psychological screening tools to assess patients for conditions like body dysmorphic disorder. This ensures patients are mentally prepared for surgery.

• Clear patient communication

You must provide patients with comprehensive information — both verbally and in writing — about the procedure, potential risks and the recovery process. This must be communicated in a language the patient understands to enable fully informed decisions.

• Transparency in qualifications and costs

Patients should be informed about the surgeon’s qualifications, any associated costs and that Medicare does not cover cosmetic surgery. Additionally, these standards emphasise the importance of maintaining detailed records, which is crucial for accreditation. Clinics must meticulously document all patient interactions, assessments and processes to comply with the new guidelines.

Tips for staying compliant

Navigating these changes can feel overwhelming, but with a structured approach, your practice can stay ahead of the curve. Here are some practical steps to help you manage the transition:

Designate a team member — such as a practice manager or senior nurse — to oversee the implementation of the new standards. This individual will act as the primary point of contact for staff inquiries and ensure consistent compliance with procedures.

Compare your clinic’s current practices with the new NSQCSS to identify areas for improvement. For example, reevaluate how you conduct patient screenings and confirm that your informational materials are up-to-date with the latest communication standards.

Staff training is crucial for a smooth transition. Ensure all team members understand the new standards and how they impact their day-to-day tasks.

The new NSQCSS represents a significant advancement in enhancing the safety and quality of cosmetic surgery across Australia. By familiarising yourself with the key updates and proactively implementing these changes, you will remain compliant and continue to provide high-quality care for your patients.

Meet Your Holiday Season Secret Weapon: Aesthetic Bureau

Gift your clinic success in 2025 with this EOY offer.

It’s the end of the year – AKA crunch time for clinics across the country. You want to make sure you’re holiday-ready, whilst looking forward to the year ahead. Expanding your treatment offering by purchasing new devices has the potential to increase profits, but big upfront investments come with their own – very real – risks.

If this predicament sounds familiar, it’s time you met your holiday angels Aesthetic Bureau. For a limited time, they’re offering everyone the opportunity to trial their state-of the-art devices with a 100% rental rebate, so you can build confidence first, and then decide later.

Gry Tomte, founder of Melbourne skin clinic HÜD, says that the Aesthetic Bureau’s end-of-year offer has given her the freedom to try cutting-edge technology without the stress of investing in the wrong place.

“Having the option to use the equipment before you decide to commit without losing money, is an absolute godsend for a lot of clinics,” she says. “If we look at the investment in aesthetic equipment, many clinics don’t actually crunch their numbers enough to know if the cost is worth the investment. Clinics turn into graveyards where ‘the latest toys’ go to die.”

the company believes in creating aesthetic technologies that customers genuinely love, and most importantly, do what they say. With over 30 years of industry experience, their team has built and/or distributed TGAlisted Laser, IPL, LED and radiofrequency equipment that deliver the highest quality non-invasive treatments for people around the world.

“Trevor is one of those humble geniuses who know all the ins and outs of most laser and aesthetic technologies,” says Gry. “Just like HÜD, he believes equipment should be about letting the technology speak for itself – not about the influencer marketing budget.”

Gry is not alone in her appraisal of Aesthetic Bureau, whose reputation has been carefully crafted over decades of reliable, trustworthy service. Dr Gavin Chan from the Victorian Cosmetic Institute identified a gap in his product offering for a multi-use and versatile device, and was left with nothing but glowing things to say about the Aesthetic Bureau’s DPL Protégé.

“I wanted an all-in-one machine that could be used on almost all my patients and treat multiple concerns,” he says. “This machine can treat a number of skin concerns, making it my go-to energy-based device for many of my patients.”

Aesthetic Bureau’s products aren’t just propped by glossy promises — led by industry veterans Trevor Neale and his co-founder Tony Li,

In fact, there are a lot of things Aesthetic Bureau do behind closed doors that have contributed to their stellar, public-facing reputation. They don’t just develop industryleading devices that address a full-spectrum of conditions, they build long-standing relationships with each and every one of their clients that last long after the initial sale. From providing training that allows full optimisation of the equipment, to offering advice on marketing initiatives, their service is anything but transactional. Something that didn’t go unnoticed by Dr Gavin Chan.

“Even the most effective device is no good without the proper support and service. I have to thank Trevor and his team at Aesthetic Bureau for the excellent support they have provided in making their machine a success at our practice,” he says.

With zero-risk and no strings attached, Aesthetic Bureau are here to help you skip the clinic graveyard curse, increase your product offering and have the best holiday season you’ve ever had. Now that’s a reason to celebrate.

Better Practice

= Better Compliance

Meet InstantCosmetics, the cosmetic scripting and wholesale company making it easier to grow and enhance compliance in your clinic.

InstantCosmetics, established in 2018, is the original scripting platform. What began as a small startup has rapidly evolved into a robust platform with enhanced capabilities and support.

InstantCosmetics has had quite the revamp in the past 6-12 months, being acquired by Wesfarmers Health in November of 2023. The support of Wesfarmers Health has enabled the business to grow and establish clear requirements for the platform within the aesthetics space. Wesfarmers Health has also acquired a number of other aesthetic businesses and is now on track to be a key leader in the Australian aesthetic space. So, what are some of the latest advances to hit the InstantCosmetics platform, and why should your clinic script, purchase and partner with InstantCosmetics?

1. Experienced Cosmetic Medical Team

InstantCosmetics’ Medical Director, Dr. Built Varinporn Amporndanai, brings

years of expertise in the aesthetics space, with a background in Psychiatry and General Medicine. Since the early days of InstantCosmetics, Dr. Built has been instrumental in shaping the company’s clinical frameworks and ensuring compliance with the highest standards of clinical governance. In addition to her leadership role, Dr. Built is now a state trainer for Rejuran, sharing her advanced knowledge with other

professionals in the field. Alongside her work at InstantCosmetics, she also operates her own clinic, where she performs cosmetic treatments.

Her expertise in auditing, clinical oversight, and cosmetic scripting, along with her hands-on work as a practitioner and trainer, makes Dr. Built a leader in the industry. She ensures her fellow doctors are equipped with the knowledge to provide safe, advanced treatments. Through her commitment to compliance, governance, and education, Dr. Built is shaping the future of cosmetic medicine, setting new standards of excellence and innovation.

Alongside Dr. Built, InstantCosmetics has recently acquired the skillset of Dr. Jonathan Hopkirk as the Cosmetic Complications Director. Dr. Jonathan comes with quite the resume having been the former Global Medical Director of the Laser Clinics Group and having built a strong skillset and clinical acumen for managing rare and severe adverse

the rest. In everything we do.

From how we treat our customers, to what we offer, to how we partner with your business – no matter what size.

It’s not about being the biggest or the loudest, or even the brightest and shiniest. It’s about clarity, cleverness and class. World-class.

It’s as simple as that. InstantCosmetics. Beautifully Simple.

Looking to change how nurses do business, is InstantCosmetics main priority.

“Our mission is to develop innovative solutions that empower nurses to excel in their practice. We want nurses to associate our name with a commitment to prioritising their business needs above all else,” says Charlie Abboud, Head of InstantCosmetics.

3. New Booking System

Finally, a booking system for nurses! Having been in the works with InstantCosmetics

for a while now, this booking system allows nurses or clinic managers to roster their staff sessions. Book patients easily, across multiple clinics and change bookings where required.

A long asked for inclusion from nurses, InstantCosmetics have worked hard to deliver a system that can effectively do it all. And, with further developments on the way, the InstantCosmetics booking system is set to become a cosmetic nurse’s best friend.

4. New easy to use multi-scripting

Nurses now have the ability to script for multiple areas with multiple products in the one script. This streamlines the scripting process and allows for an even quicker and more expense friendly experience for both patient and nurse.

InstantCosmetics has incorporated facial mapping into their scripting process. While this feature is optional, it provides nurses with an effective and manageable way to create detailed treatment plans for their patients.

You’ll find these new additions a muchwelcomed solution to doing business as a cosmetic nurse.

5. Inventory and Drug Book Management System

Another exciting addition is the Inventory Management System. This system allows nurses to add stock to the clinic inventory and manage stock levels in real time. Product is automatically deducted from the inventory when a nurse scripts for a patient.

Nurses are also able to order stock directly from this feature when they are running low. It’s a wonderful system, that feeds back to InstantCosmetics’ position on giving nurses the tools they need to manage their clinic well and most importantly, give them time back to focus on growing their business.

Gone are the days of recording on paper – let us introduce the InstantCosmetics Drug Book. A fully digital experience that feeds back into the Inventory System as well as the scripting platform to record each treatment and product that you use in clinic.

6. Streamlined Auditing

It’s no secret that the cosmetic industry is one that is highly regulated across the board. With nurses leaning into their scripting business for more insights into how they can manage their business in a more compliant way.

months, nurses will be prompted to conduct these audits regularly. Ensuring that nurses are scripting for patients in a safe and compliant workspace.

InstantCosmetics has always held this to a high standard and will continue to grow further in this space as the industry continues to regulate higher standards of practice.

If you are looking for a platform that is going to make doing business that little bit easier, whilst also keeping you ahead of the rest –then InstantCosmetics can assist in bridging the two.

From experienced and well-versed doctors in the aesthetics space, to the new and exciting developments still to come. You can rest assured that InstantCosmetics has the interest of its nurses at heart. It’s the foundation that has led to their key messaging. “InstantCosmetics. Beautifully Simple.”
