Editor’s letter
“Hello. Nice to e-meet you.”
S
Lana Bogunovich Editor Managing Director Simon Grover Publisher Paul Wootton pwootton@intermedia.com.au Editor Lana Bogunovich lbogunovich@intermedia.com.au
o began the many of my emails when I took my seat in the editor’s chair. The irony of joining an industry that revolves around in-person meetings and events during the middle of a lockdown wasn’t lost on me. As I write my first editor’s letter reflecting on my time in the role so far, I feel truly grateful to have joined the Spice team and the industry that we are a part of. As a relative newcomer to the business events industry, I’ve had to get up to speed pretty quickly in order to bring this issue to life. In doing so, I’ve had the privilege to speak with many professionals across varying sectors of the industry, who have generously shared their time and insights with me. Despite the industry’s challenges and hardships, the unwavering resilience and passion of its people never fails to astound me. As we reach the end of yet another turbulent year, I think it’s fair to say we could all use a little motivation and inspiration (as well as a break!). Get started by turning to page 10 of our annual incentives issue and let our itinerary through Geelong, The Bellarine, and Great Ocean Road inspire your own incentive program full of Victorian adventures. In our incentives feature on page 20, I speak with an expert on the emerging incentive travel trends you need to know, then show you where to experience them right here in Australia, on page 24. We then head to the sunny coasts of Queensland, exploring the very best on offer on the Gold Coast (page 26) and the Sunshine Coast (page 31). With borders opening up and restrictions across the country easing, events will soon be back in full force. Find out how venues are keeping you COVID-safe on page 14 and what innovative technologies can give you peace of mind for your next event on page 18. Finally, we end on a note from highly respected industry leader Geoff Donaghy, who reflects on the year that has been on page 34. I hope our summer edition of Spice sparks your inspiration and excitement for the new year ahead, one filled with rewarding incentives and brilliant events, and I look forward to meeting you in person at one of them very soon. Until then, please connect with us via our social channels and enjoy the issue!

Safety first As in-person events and venues adjust to a “new normal”, COVID safety solutions will play an integral role in how we create a safe, healthy and hygienic environment. From rapid-testing devices to capacity management trackers, these innovative tools and technologies are designed to support events with their government mandated COVID safety plans.
Visions In Style’s Mobile Rapid Testing Solution Having successfully produced and managed events both nationally and internationally for nearly 25 years, Visions In Style has always placed health and safety at the forefront of all its planning. After looking at ways to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission at events, director Michael Cartwright developed a rapid-testing service specifically designed to help ensure a COVID-free environment at events. It includes a mobile temporary screening suite, which can be set up anywhere, where guests are checked in via QR codes and then tested for COVID-19 quickly and easily with a rapid antigen saliva pen. Overseen by a registered nurse, the whole process is completely contained, hygienic and professional, takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, and is an effective way to prevent active COVID-19 cases from entering the venue. The testing suites can also be styled to the theme of your event, so guests can relax in a comfortable environment that doesn’t feel rigid and clinical while they are checked in and tested. There’s also a range of additional hygiene and sanitising solutions that can be incorporated, as well as a COVID Concierge that can guide guests when gathering in high volume areas. 18 Spice Summer 2021

Create Engage’s ON AIR+ and ON DEMAND COVID-safe studios Having successfully live-streamed events for many years, Create Engage realised the need for a safe space to stream from while helping industry colleagues doing it tough. Joining forces with Audio Visual Events (AVE) and SMC Conference & Function Centre (SMC), they launched ON AIR – a semi-permanent studio located within SMC in Sydney’s CBD. The project proved a success and the concept was expanded to ON AIR + at Carriageworks. Offering high-end virtual event capabilities complete with AV crew, this larger studio space doubles as a hybrid space and can accommodate up to 200 guests and up to 30 clients and crew. Create Engage also runs ON DEMAND - a smaller studio within SMC, which utilises Create Engage’s own platform Create Live Pro, offering a great option for pre-records and smaller meeting style events.
Hire Intelligence Contact-free registration services and sanitisation stations have become an important frontline feature for venues and events, and Hire Intelligence’s kiosks provide an efficient way to register people entering a venue. INCENTIVES: TRENDS AND CHALLENGES
As we navigate towards a post-pandemic world, incentive travel programs are taking on a more thoughtful approach, writes Lana Bogunovich.
I
ncentive travel programs have changed a lot over the past few years and even more so since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the demand to reward top performers is still there, and incentives are perhaps more important than ever to motivate teams and boost morale, our values and attitudes have evolved and given rise to new priorities. The Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) is the largest global association in the world dedicated to incentive travel, with a focus on research, education and professionalism. Here, president of SITE Australia and New Zealand (SITE ANZ) Colette Baini, shares her insights on emerging incentive travel trends, as well as challenges, for the next year.

20 Spice Summer 2021
Keeping it local While the lack of stability around insurance cover and other logistics continues to challenge international travel plans, most travel incentive programs will remain focused within Australia and ‘bubble’ markets for 2022. Luckily, when it comes to the unique, authentic and creative incentive experiences people are seeking, Australia delivers it in spades.
“Australia is one of the most stunning and diverse countries in the world and it has everything we need when it comes to incentives,” says Baini. “Not all companies are willing to send their employees away on 10- and 20-hour flights to far-flung destinations and Australia offers so many extraordinary experiences for every level of performance and investment.” While there’s definitely pent-up demand for international travel, Baini says we are still going to be facing plenty of challenges with it for some time. “The appeal for travel will at first be closely aligned with where we are allowed and welcomed to travel and secondly, which destinations offer great flight access,” she says. “But within a year or so, the world will find its stride again and we will have learned to navigate the new norms to allow for international travel.”
Redefining luxury Luxury incentive travel has long been considered the ultimate reward and flashy five-star trips will continue to be desirable and influence the way incentive programs are designed. But people are also yearning for one-of-a-kind experiences that are meaningful, authentic and inspire a sense of connection.
Feature “Australian customers are regarded as being amongst the most premium of incentive buyers,” says Baini. “Particularly for those that have seen and done it all, they have a very high expectation that their efforts will be rewarded with a trip that is not only luxurious and high value, but also full of truly special and extraordinary moments in unique environments that challenge the status quo.” The allure of incentive travel is that it offers exclusive experiences the individual couldn’t normally access on their own, but Baini says the rewards are offered to all levels of personnel and should be tailored in ways that are personally meaningful to the recipient. “A group of top performing mechanics from an automotive dealer network will be more motivated to attend a World Rally Championship in Coffs Harbour than they would be to sit around a resort pool. Foodies would work hard to achieve a program that takes them on a food safari through Tasmania where they can indulge in farm-to-table experiences,” says Baini. Incentive travellers are also seeking real experiences that allow them to connect to a place and its culture in authentic ways, and it’s these types of incentive trips that Baini says leave a lasting impact. “One of my personal favourite incentive trips was right through the centre of Australia. It was an incredible program but what made it truly magical and memorable were the extraordinary locals we encountered along the way – from storytellers and pioneers to Aussie outback larrikins and spirited First Nations people that gifted us with a deeper meaning of place and country. This combination only happens right here in Australia.”
Connection and balance After yet another year of restrictions and uncertainties, many of us are emerging out of lockdown with Zoom fatigue and are craving face to face interaction and connection more than ever. Besides connecting with fellow team members, Baini says top achievers get the opportunity to travel and engage with the top leadership executives of the company. “That’s time you would never normally get in a typical working environment and the shared experiences are a real bond for everyone involved,” she says. While high achievers have spent the year working extremely hard to earn their incentive, they’ve also had time to think and reassess and have realised the importance of balance. They want and deserve the recognition for their performance, but they also want to unplug and unwind, which is why it’s crucial to plan a
program that is balanced and runs at a carefully considered pace. Incentive programs that are smaller in size, offer a detox from technology and have a focus on personalised health and wellness experiences are seeing a rise in popularity.
Sustainability Sustainability continues to be a key influence for incentive programs and has become a necessity rather than a consideration. Delegates and companies want and have come to expect experiences that limit their impact on the environments and communities they visit. Planners need to keep this in mind when deciding on venues, accommodation, suppliers and destinations. “Given our global experience these past two years, individuals and businesses are seeking to do better and be more thoughtful and conscious in their consumption,” says Baini. “Right now, it’s about ensuring you have incentive programs that deliver on those values around sustainability and less waste.” Beyond carbon-offsetting and plastic-ditching, there is a strong desire to engage in projects and activities that positively benefit the communities and destinations visited. Whether it’s to support community initiatives or help conservation efforts, Baini says organisations have identified that their people are feeling inspired to give back. “People are choosing to work for organisations that do good and that make them feel good about where they have chosen to work,” she says.
“Australia is one of the most stunning and diverse countries in the world and it has everything we need when it comes to incentives” – Colette Baini

Engaging in activities where one feels they are contributing towards a greater good is a reward in itself and we’ll be seeing more incentive programs move away from consumption towards contribution. “We have become more aware and as a result more willing to lend a helping hand if we can,” says Baini. “I love the idea of high-performing individuals uniting in the pursuit of easing the burden for their fellow man. Perhaps it's building water tanks, buying books and stationery for children in need, building homes for communities ravaged by natural disasters, or assisting with conservation efforts – when we are rewarded we are motivated to pay it forward and people appreciate their organisations aligning with such missions.”
Safety and other challenges
We’ll be seeing more incentive programs move away from consumption towards contribution
SITE on sustainability SITE ANZ has created a Sustainability Roadmap to inspire the events and incentives industry to create positive change by implementing sustainable practices across three key goals – minimising waste, impact spending, and education and engagement. After all, smaller touchpoints add up to bigger impact and add value to your offering. SITE is asking all planners and suppliers to make sustainability a priority and to ensure their customers also prioritise this as a feature of their business event and incentive program.

Looking towards the near future, it’s clear there are still many challenges to overcome and uncertainties to navigate. Key factors such as staffing, safety and security, and technology will greatly influence the way incentive travel evolves over the next 12 to 18 months. One of the biggest issues affecting the entire industry is the staffing and skills shortage, which Baini says the industry will continue to grapple with well into the next year. “We have lost a lot of skilled professionals to other industries that can provide them with stability and I think we’re going to engage freelance event organisers and incentive planners to help us tackle this – I think they are the ones who are prepared to ride the wave with us as we grow back the industry,” she says.
As interstate and international travel resumes, safety and stability remain top concerns. With a large degree of uncertainty around air travel, borders, insurance, safety restrictions and other logistical factors to navigate, planners will continue to work around anticipating disruptions. “Travel programs are vulnerable to a range of issues not previously considered and planners have a great deal more responsibility in planning to ensure the comfort, safety and health of their valued guests,” says Baini. However, Baini is adamant that for planners to have any sort of assurance, borders need to open and stay open. “We can’t manage anything if the rules keep changing on us with borders that just shut down with hours’ notice or even mid-air for some people.” Contactless technology will also continue to play a big part in the way incentive programs are planned and managed. “Tech innovation has come a long way and we will continue to rely heavily on tools such as temperature scanning, electronic passport scanners, QR codes, apps and much more, to give us and our clients and delegates peace of mind.” Ultimately, while the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly impacted incentive travel, the industry is resilient and desire and demand remains strong. “We already have the demand, we have already seen an influx of enquiry for 2022 and we all know once we resume, we’ll deliver business properly,” says Baini. “Once we bounce back, it’s going to be all systems go – the professionalism and the passion is still there.” n

Opinion
Emerging from a crisis ICC Sydney chief executive officer Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) deputy chair, Geoff Donaghy reflects on the challenges of the past year and shares his optimism for the solutions.
S
urpassing a year and a half into the COVID-19 crisis, it is timely to reflect on the business events industry’s response to the global pandemic, as well as consider our approach to any future disruptions. For many organisations in this dynamic industry, the past year has put to the test crisis management and business continuity responses in every sense, from operational to communication and advocacy perspectives.
An unprecedented threat As an industry, business events has been one of the quiet achievers of the Australian economy – growing at around six percent annually since 2014, directly contributing over $35 billion in economic activity in 2019, and employing more than 229,000 people across a range of sectors and trades. It was one of the first hit and will be one of the last to recover from the effects of the pandemic. The Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) recognised the severe impacts of the crisis early. What transpired after restrictions were announced, although expected and unavoidable, was devastating nonetheless as most business events (96 percent) scheduled for 2020 were cancelled or postponed. The loss of which came at a significant cost – not only financial, but social as well, as over 92,000 industry jobs were lost between the end of 2019 and 30 June 2020 alone.
- Exemptions for business events and venues in recognition of stringent and safe operational plans. - Advocacy across multiple Australian states resulted in state specific funding programs which included provisions for business events, such as the NSW Government’s announcement of $530 million to turbocharge the local visitor economy. - Inclusion of business events in the Australian Government’s JobSeeker program, although not continuing for long enough, did provide much needed financial support for those in the sector.
Health and safety paramount Domestic business events organisations have built a sound reputation for stringent health and safety standards. Though perhaps never before has our success hinged so heavily on our processes in this regard. The industry re-evaluated its protocols, from hygiene measures and contactless solutions to check in processes – the entire patron journey was reviewed through a risk mitigation lens and a legacy of enhanced measures will be here for some time.
Advocacy and consultancy activated
Phased approach to recovery proving accurate
Working with the Government on an urgent strategy to sustain the industry and drive recovery from the crisis has been imperative and consultation with the industry was key. Industry association and stakeholder perspectives were canvassed to accurately communicate the needs through to each appropriate tier of government. BECA’s Business Events Recovery and Rebound Framework highlighted our industry’s contribution to the overall economy, challenges faced, and the gaps that were not alleviated or solved by existing stimulus, support measures and longer-term sustainability solutions. Though not every advocacy initiative cut through, as can be the case when lobbying governments for complex changes, there were a number of successes along the road to recovery, including: - The Commonwealth’s $50 million funding announcement to support the restart of Australia’s business events industry.
BECA identified two distinct phases of ‘recovery’ and ‘rebound’. In Australia, high vaccination levels have helped us emerge from the Delta outbreak and we are now stepping through the ‘recovery’ phase. Focussing on the domestic situation, here we maintain our industry’s capacity, build local confidence and demand for business events, and develop industry strategies and practices for the future market. The ‘rebound’ phase will focus on activating regional and global markets and a more significant return to normal levels for international business events is anticipated from the second half of 2022. In this evolved world of business events, we are expecting to see a surge in demand driven by a renewed premium on in-person contact, and the demand for knowledge exchange and experiences, and we have already seen green shoots appearing here. n
