RABBI LEVI SHEMTOV reads the Megillah, the biblical story of how Queen Esther saved the Jews of ancient Persia, to costumed children before a magic show during Purim celebrations at the Chabad Lubavitch of Riverdale on March 4.

PURIM

For kids it means costumes, candy and a great story with a happy ending

A

festive atmosphere filled area synagogues and community centers for the Jewish holiday of Purim last week. Highlighted by the reading of the Megillah — the story of how Esther, the Jewish Queen of Persia, foiled a genocidal plot against her co-religionists — it is a time of celebration and feasting on candy and special triangular pastries called Hamantaschen. In addition, children dress in costumes and participate in the Jewish version of trick-or-treating. While snowfall prevented some people from calling on one another at their homes as per usual custom, the weather did not keep children and others from flocking to local houses of worship. Photo editor Adrian Fussell captured the fun at Chabad Lubavitch of Riverdale on March 4 and the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale on March 5.

JACOB SABIN, 3, has his face painted like a tiger by artist Talia Michaeli at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale (HIR) on March 5 in photo above.

CHILDREN CELEBRATED in costumes — some biblical, some modern — at the Chabad Lubavitch of Riverdale. KIDS JUMP on an inflatable Twister game at HIR, left.

COSTUMED CHILDREN climb up an inflatable bounce castle at HIR, photo at right.

B4 - THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, March 12, 2015

Home of the week Susan Baldwin I Robert E. Hill, Inc.

Country living just 24 minutes from Grand Central Station

W

ho among us hasn’t nurtured the romantic notion of ďŹ nding and restoring a countr y barn in a bucolic setting with beautifully landscaped grounds and stately trees covered with fragrant blossoms in spring? Impossible to ďŹ nd in New York City, even in Riverdale, right? Well, think again. In the middle of the 19th century, Samuel Babcock established a country seat he called Hillside that stretched from the Hudson River to Fieldston Road, with swaths of land on either side of West 254th Street. He was drawn, no doubt, to the river views and the closeness to the Riverdale railroad station, from which — even then — he could get to Grand Central in less than half an hour. The main portion of the estate was purchased in the mid-1950s by a group of local investors intent on preserving its countriďŹ ed character while developing single-family homes that would share amenities like an outdoor swimming pool and scenic pathways across the property. Even before construction began on new homes, the existing barn that housed the Babcock carriag-

es and horses was snapped up and repurposed — creating a 3,500-square-foot, ďŹ ve-bedroom, threeand-a-half bath home on a half-acre lot that takes advantage of every romantic detail. Today, the shingle-sided house sits behind an ashlar stone wall and a sumptuous drive with barn doors that swing open to accomodate three cars and a generous workshop area. A circular stairway leads to a ďŹ rst oor with rooms that are well, as big as a barn, each with broad expanses of multi-paned glass overlooking a very private patio, lawn and terraced garden. Although the home has been renovated in recent years, none of the charm of its commodious family/media room, its soaring double story living room with woodburning ďŹ replace, its formal dining room or its up-to-date country kitchen has been lost. Rounding out the spaces on the ďŹ rst oor are a powder room and a laundry room. Upstairs, beneath a double gable roof, are ďŹ ve bedrooms and three full bathrooms. According to co-exclusive brokers Susan Baldwin of Robert E. Hill, Inc. and Terhi Edwards of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, the asking price for the property is $2,430,000.

Clockwise from top: Lights from the living areas of the house cast a warm glow on the snowy backyard. During warmer months, the house is ringed with leafy, colorful trees. The family/media room is the place to put your feet up and relax. A wall of windows brightens the master bedroom and its en suite bathroom. The country kitchen has every convenience — custom cabinets, granite countertops and restaurant grade appliances. Note: Each week’s featured home is chosen at random from among houses and apartments offered by Riverdale Press advertisers. The opinions expressed are those of the advertiser and not The Riverdale Press news department. For further information, write to advertising@ riverdalepress.com.

irst-year head coach John McKenna will look to lead the Lancers to their first winning season in more than eight years. The Lancers went 4-8 in conference play last season with McKenna as an assistant, but will return their entire infield led by junior utility player Kyala Cruz. Cruz, a second team All-CUNYAC selection, hit .400 last season and led the team with 33 RBIs and a .670 slugging percentage. Jona Kerluku, Linda Resto, Ashley Williams, Meghan Bravo and Arlette Martinez will also make up the infield on a team that is not satisfied with last season. “Our infield is our strength,” McKenna said. “Our outfield is coming along, but I expect to be led by those six young ladies [in the infield].” As a pitcher last season, Bravo went 8-11 with a 7.05 ERA in 92.1 innings pitched. Martinez, who also plays second base and outfield, will take over the second pitching spot for the first time in her collegiate career. Freshmen Karina Lora and Bianca Osorio are expected to contribute as outfielders right away. Osorio won her league championship and was named Most Valuable Player during her time at KIPP NYC College Prep high school. McKenna won’t put a number on the amount of wins he expects his team to get, but said he would love to have a .500 season in his first year. “We worked so hard last year as a staff,” McKenna said. “Even though I was an assistant, we went in with our knowledge of travel ball, and we gave everything we could. The girls are making leaps and bounds from where we were last year.”

ames Cisco joins Lehman as head coach after the team went 2-8 in conference play last season. While this will be his first time coaching at the collegiate level, he is no rookie to championship baseball. Cisco started for Fordham during the team’s 1998 championship season and still ranks among school’s all-time leaders in hits. He will guide a veteran pitching staff that includes transfer Matt Brown, the CUNYAC pitcher of the year last season at Queensborough Community College. Stephen Smith and Francisco Pena will also lead pitching staff that had a 7.40 ERA last season. As a starter last year, Smith had a 4.98 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched and he led the team with 40 strikeouts. Pena will have a bigger role this season after racking up a 12.27 ERA in 14.2 innings in relief last season. “We’re going to have a staff that knows how to get players out,” Cisco said. “They’re working extremely hard to throw strikes and cut down on the walks this year.” Lehman lost two of its best hitters in Tom Liang and Socrates Peralta, but added some new faces to fill the void. Transfers Carlo Francisco and Chris Lopez come to Lehman hoping to improve the .257 team batting average last season. The Lancers will boast a talented middle part of the lineup that features seniors Jhon Comas, Carlos Alcantara and Smith. Comas will make his return to the baseball field after sitting out since 2012, and will play shortstop, second base and serve as the team’s closer.

LEHMAN COLLEGE sophomore softball player Linda Resto. “They have shown a lot of growth,” Cisco said. “I think they’re poised to have pretty big years.” As an assistant at Yonkers High School, Cisco helped the team improve its batting average from .209 to .350 in one season. During his time at Lehman, he has focused on working on the biomechanics of each player and then approaching the mental aspect of the game hoping to achieve a similar improvement for his team. “My first expectation is I feel that anyone can get better if they put enough smart work into it,” Cisco said.

or the College of Mount St. Vincent baseball team (1518, 8-8 ECAC in 2014), the 2014 season was about losing in the first round of the Skyline Tournament. “Definitely not a season where we wanted to finish, but we have a lot of returning guys and a great group of underclassmen this year,” Dolphins head coach Vinny Todino said. “We’re a little smaller in roster size this year than usual but we’re happy with the guys we play every day. We’re definitely looking to make some noise in the conference this year, as long as everybody stays healthy.” In the three most important areas of play – pitching, hitting and fielding – CMSV was in the middle of the pack. It was ranked fifth in pitching (4.66 ERA) and hitting (.268 team batting average) while placing sixth in fielding (.943). “We have a lot more depth coming into the season,” said junior Tyler Krolikowski. “Everyone has bought into what we are about this season. It’s really great. I’d like to see everyone keep it up all year round.” The Skyline Conference Preseason poll has the Dolphins ranked seventh in the eight-team league. “We try not to look at the preseason rankings,” Todino said. “I don’t think that it holds much water at this point of the season. We try and preach that it’s more important where we end up

at the end of April and the beginning of May. We’re a blue collar bunch that is going to scratch and claw for every run and be scrappy. We are going to come out and start firing.”

he softball team at CMSV, which finished the 2014 season with a 28-7 overall record and 9-5 in the ECAC, is on an opposite trajectory than its baseball counterpart. Last season the Dolphins lost their shot at the Skyline title on the second day of the tournament after back-toback losses to Farmingdale State, 9-5, a team that went on to claim the Skyline crown, and Sage, 5-0. It was only the third time all season CMSV had lost consecutive games. “We saw last year we could have won so there’s no reason this year why we can’t,” said senior Kathleen Davis. “Last year a lot of our players were young, freshmen and sophomores, who maybe didn’t play so much and now they’re vetted. They have one season under their belt and they’re only going to get better from there. That’s going to be huge.” Recruits were major contributors and one of the main reasons why CMSV had a contending season I 2014. The Dolphins will again look toward their recruits in the 2015 season, particularly Rachel Heizer and Abbie Weaver. “Unfortunately we couldn’t finish the job last year,” said Dolphins head coach Mark Roldan. “But this year we feel very confident we have a great chance. We’re focused on those 14 games we have in the Skyline Conference.” — preview by Jonathan Reyes Next week: a look at Manhattan College baseball and softball

Jaspers’ road to triumph has been a bumpy one And it is even sweeter this time around. “I think with all we’ve been through this season, and I don’t want to air everyone’s personal stuff, but it’s been a lot to deal with,” Richards said. “And then you know coach had to go through that thing with his degree. It all helped pull this team together and now we’re champions again.”

Series sweep Iona (26-8) had swept the season series from the Jaspers in the regular season, winning 70-67 on Feb. 13 at Draddy Gym and again in New Rochelle with a 79-75 victory on Feb. 27. So there were some who doubted the Jaspers could topple the mighty Gaels with the conference tournament crown on the line. But none of those who doubted Manhattan’s will were wearing green and white uniforms Monday night. The Jaspers (19-13) opened up an 11-point lead in the first half, settled for a 39-37 advantage at the half and then saw Iona tie the score at 60-60 with 7:01 to play after a layup by Kelvin Amayo. This is where the doubters thought Manhattan

would succumb to the Gaels. Instead they regrouped with an 11-3 spurt to take a 71-63 lead after a jumper by Pankey. Suddenly, all that stood between Manhattan and a second straight MAAC title was a mere four minutes. “I wasn’t confident we had the win until the final seconds,” said Pankey, who was named tournament MVP. “Iona is a great team with great players so we had to play hard right to the end. But what a feeling it is to win the championship again. We’re really going to take the time to enjoy this one because after everything this team has been though, we deserve to enjoy this one.”

‘22 Strong’ Stores, the senior and one of the architects of the “22 Strong” movement, was asked how it felt to reach the pinnacle again after such a tumultuous season. “This is one of the best feelings,” Stores said. “My journey started here four years ago when [head coach Steve Masiello] brought me in here. He created this culture and I thank God for him every day.” “This one is special for a lot of us,” Andujar said. “We’ll al-

ways remember this one.” On Monday night in Albany, right around 11:15 p.m., the Jaspers looked like a team that was finally able to exhale. This band of brothers, armed with their “us-against-the-world” mentality, was finally allowing itself to enjoy the moment. They danced, they hugged, they laughed and they even cried a little. They cut down the nets and grabbed the championship trophy, each player getting a touch and Pankey looking at one point like he would never let it go. And as they celebrated with family, friends, fellow students and even the Jaspers cheerleaders and band members, Queen’s “We Are the Champions” played over the sound system at the Times Union Center. Yes, the Jaspers are again champions of the MAAC and NCAA Tournament-bound. Shame on the doubters. Masiello’s blue-collar bunch will enjoy this victory, gather on campus on Sunday to watch the NCAA Selection Show, learn who their next opponent will be and where they will play. Then they will get ready in hopes of extending this emotional rollercoaster of a season. “This is a proud moment

for me, but this is all about my players,” said Masiello, who overcame his own personal issues this past year when he was forced to take a leave of absence from Manhattan last spring to complete his college degree after it was revealed he

did not graduate from the University of Kentucky in 2000 like he claimed. “This is the greatest feeling in my life in probably the hardest year of my life. I’m the luckiest coach in college basketball and it’s about these kids.”

(Continued from page A1) Andujar’s older brother, Jose, was murdered in April 2012 and Andujar was called to testify for the prosecution just this past December. Sophomore center Carlton Allen lost his father to cancer in February. Ashton Pankey’s brother was hospitalized for a serious medical condition and that’s just some of what these Jaspers have had to deal with this season. “We’ve all lost someone,” Stores said. “So we’re all we have. That’s why this year we’re ‘22 Strong.’” The slogan stands for the number of members in the Manhattan basketball family, from players to coaches, and it has been the Jaspers rallying cry this season, a season where no one thought much of Manhattan’s chances at a repeat in the MAAC or another magical March experience in the NCAA Tournament. But thanks to Andujar’s double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds), Pankey’s teamhigh 21 points, 13 points from Donovan Kates, another unheralded senior, and Shane Richards’ 11 points, the Jaspers are going dancing again for a second straight season.

What’s cooking?

Lamb is a favorite traditional choice for Easter or Passover rstein@riverdalepress.com Passover and Easter are occurring almost simultaneously this year, and for many, the main course on the holiday table will be the same — lamb. The flavorful meat is never more popular than it is at this time of year, but if you think you’re eating spring lamb, think again. According to a blog post by Chef Thomas Schneller, who teaches meat identification at the Culinary Institute of America, “The term ‘spring lamb’ can mean the lamb that was born in spring and raised throughout the summer into early fall. So spring lamb really wouldn’t be ready until mid-July into September. The lamb that is available now was born in the fall. That shouldn’t deter families who want to honor holiday tradition by roasting lamb. Complicating matters further, nowadays with global markets, much of our lamb is imported from Australia and New Zealand, the lands “down under,” where the seasons are reversed and spring begins in October. Of course, every part of the world offers its own unique recipes and cooking methods. Chef Schneller prefers to bone legs of lamb and then stuff them and roast them slowly for about two and a half hours. In our family, we’ve come to favor my father-in-law’s recipe. He was always willing to grill butterflied legs of lamb, no matter what the season. He would bring the meat to room temperature and then punch holes in it with a paring knife, inserting cloves of garlic in the holes. Then, he’d sprinkle the meat with salt, pepper and, perhaps, fresh rosemary, and grill it over hot lump hardwood charcoal — no briquets or gas grills, please. After about 15 minutes, he’d remove it from the heat and lustily squeeze lemon halves over the meat after running a stick of butter — yes, butter — over the surface of the meat as it cooled. Kosher cooks can substitute margarine. He’d slice the meat for serving beside heaps of cipollini onions, steamed over the coals in their own blackened skins. He loved a good bottle of wine, but didn’t think anything fancy was necessary, preferring a recently vinted Chateau de la Chaize Beaujolais to a Bordeaux or Burgundy. An Irish take on leg of lamb is offered by “Patrick” on the allrecipes.com site. He suggests brussel sprouts cooked in butter and fresh garlic as the perfect side dish.

inch intervals. It’s okay if a little stuffing protrudes from the sides of the roast. In a flat dish, mix together the flour, 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of pepper, the thyme, and the fennel seeds, and press the tied roast firmly into the flour mixture to coat all sides. Heat the sesame oil in a heavy oven-proof or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until the oil shimmers, and sear

all sides of the roast, including the ends, to a golden brown color. Lay the roast into the skillet, place into the preheated oven, and roast to your desired degree of doneness, or an internal temperature of 145 degrees for medium, about 40 minutes. Remove from the oven, cover with a doubled sheet of aluminum foil, and allow to rest in a warm area 10 to 15 minutes before slicing.

Remove plastic netting or twine from around the leg of lamb, if any, and open up the roast on a cutting board. Place the boned side of the roast up. With a sharp paring knife, cut away any excess fatty areas. Use a sharp knife to cut 1/2-inch deep slits in the meat about 2 inches apart, to help the meat lie flat. Cover the meat with a sturdy piece of plastic wrap or a cut-apart food storage bag, and pound the meat with a mallet or the edge of a small plate until the roast is about 3/4 inch thick everywhere, and 10 to 14 inches square. Preheat an oven to 400 degrees. Sprinkle the upper side of the meat with salt and pepper, and then spread spinach leaves over the top of the roast to within 1/2 inch of the edges. Break up the goat cheese and sprinkle it evenly over the spinach, then sprinkle the pine nuts over the cheese. Roll the roast up into a tight cylinder, and tie the roast together with kitchen twine at 2
