5 Israeli issues unfolding in ’17
By Jacob Kamaras, JNS.org The onset of 2017 comes just three weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, ushering in a new era in the U.S.-Israel relationship. The new year and new administration bring intrigue and unanswered questions on a number of major storylines that could shape the complexion of American-Israeli ties both this year and for years to come. JNS.org presents five potential major developments to watch for this year. Embassy to Jerusalem? Trump and his ambassador-designate to Israel, Five Towns resident David Friedman, have pledged to move America’s Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Will they follow through? Typically, any country’s foreign embassies are located in capital cities. Israel set up its capital in Jerusalem in 1948, but many nations, including the U.S., have established their embassies in Tel Aviv; since 1967, this has been part of a refusal to recognize Israel’s annexation of See NEXT! on page 21

103 hurt in LIRR crash The 7:18 am LIRR train out of Far Rockaway crashed through an end-of-the-line bumper at the Atlantic Terminal station on Wednesday, injuring 103 passengers. Eleven people were transported by ambulances to Brooklyn hospitals, but none of the injuries were life threatening, according to the New York City fire department. LIRR officials said the six-car train carried 430 passengers, many from the Five Towns. As a result of the impact, the lead wheel assembly derailed as did one additional axle. “The train was supposed to stop at a bumper and didn’t, but glad to report there were no deaths,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at the scene. “The most serious injury was a broken leg.” “We need to make sure we determine what happened, and why it happened, so the matter is still under investigation,” said MTA Chairman Thomas Prendegast.
Huck, frum group, at Knesset
Gov. Mike Huckabee headlined an Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce symposium at the Knesset in Jerusalem on Tuesday. A dozen MKs attended the special Knesset session on the first day of a U.S.-Israel Business Alliance mission, whose leaders included Long Islanders. Huckabee delivered an impassioned speech highlighting the Biblical and historical connection between the land of Israel and the Jewish people, and deriding recent anti-Israel actions of the U.N. and Obama administration. Huckabee told an alliance dinner at the King David Hotel on Wednesday that Israel does not “occupy” Judea and Samaria. “They don’t occupy, because
they’ve owned it,” he said. “The only occupiers have been the Babylonians, the Assyrians, the Turks, the Brits.” Top left: Huckabee (flanked by chamber VP Dr. Joe Frager of Jamaica Estates) points to tiny Israel on a regional map.
