egular readers know that I am a HUGE supporter of President Trump. However, when he’s wrong, good reporting requires the president and his administration get a swift kick in the assets.

The administration’s statement commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day last Friday, which omitted any mention of the Jewish people, was stupid and insensitive. Worse was fact that the administration has been doubling down on the omission ever since.

When first noticing the “de-Jewdification” of the Holocaust on Friday, my reaction was that it must have been an accident, a rush job and somebody screwed up. And then White House spokesperson Hope Hicks announced: “Despite what the media reports, we are an incredibly inclusive group and we took into account all of those who suffered. … It was our honor to issue

OU push nets more gov’t aid to Jewish schools

By Abigail Pickus, for the OU With 81 percent of Orthodox parents having a child in day school or yeshiva, tuition is their single-biggest expense. With annual fees starting at around $15,000 per child and surpassing $30,000 in high school, an average Orthodox family (4.1 children, according to Pew) will pay $1 million in education costs before their kids even reach college.

“This is the single-most important economic issue facing our community,” said Allen Fagin, chief professional officer at the Orthodox Union. “We are seeing too many cases of parents who would prefer to send their kids to yeshivot or day schools who are opting for public education because they simply can’t afford the cost of day school.”

Even parents who are able to scrape together the money necessary to send their kids to Jewish schools often find they can’t afford much else,

noted Cheryl Rosenberg, president of the Ben Porat Yosef day school in Bergen County and a parent of four children at the school.

The Orthodox community long relied on private philanthropy to defray tuition costs, applying philanthropic largesse to everything from capital campaigns to financing individual student scholarships. Now fighting the tuition crisis takes a host of unorthodox strategies to keep Jewish education affordable.

One of the main focal points: Securing more public funds for non-public schools, an effort that benefits any family with a child in a nonpublic school.

In New York State, which has the largest Jewish day school population in the country, roughly 13 percent of all children attend non-public schools, but only 1 percent of government education funds goes to those students.

In 2011, the OU’s nonpartisan public policy arm launched an advocacy network focused on delivering more public funding to non-public schools. In New York, that effort combined with others has helped increase the amount allocated by the legislature to non-public schools from $111 million in 2012 to $345 million in 2016.

The money has gone to a variety of programs eligible for government funding even though they are provided in parochial or other nonpublic settings: reimbursement for administering state exams, mandatory attendance-taking, textbooks, nursing services, computer software, security, teacher training.

Government funding for private schools isn’t new, but the OU says its approach is novel. The organization has built a network of schools and parent advocates, hired lobbyists and is pursuing a state-by-state strategy to get the job done.

The OU’s Teach Advocacy Network now operates in six states with large concentrations of Jewish day schools.

“We are building a robust network of schools and parent bodies to work on affordability without sacrificing quality, and hiring top lobbyists to go to bat for our students,” said Neil Cohen, a co-chair of the OU’s Teach New York effort and chairman of the venture capital firm Emerald Development Managers. “We are totally shifting the paradigm of how this work is done.”

“This is about fairness and equity for all children,” said Maury Litwack, director of state political affairs for the OU Advocacy Center. “I can’t tell you how many times people assume we are attempting some money grab from the public schools or some violation of church-state separation only to learn that we have advocated for and passed dozens of programs that take nothing away from public education and are constitutionally sound.”

Meanwhile, the money is having a real impact. At Ben Porat Yosef, for example, government funding that will deliver $224 per student to every school in New Jersey this year to cover items like nursing, textbooks and security will result in more than $100,000 for Ben Porat Yosef. An expected $25-per-student increase in security funding is expected to bring in another $10,000 to the school.

In Florida, non-public schools are benefiting from tax credit incentives that allow corporations to donate to a scholarship fund for lowincome students and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit from the state. Florida awarded $559 million in tax credits for 2016-17, and 69 percent of the programs’ beneficiaries are in religious schools. That is translating into $13.8 million in scholarships to 2,405 students in 32 Jewish schools in the state this year. The scholarships are worth up to $5,886 per student.

Elsewhere in the country, schools are experimenting with flexible or capped tuition models aimed at giving relief to middle-income families.

For example, in 2015 four Jewish day schools in New Jersey decided to use a $10 million gift to cap tuition at 18 percent of a family’s pre-tax income. Other schools, like Oakland Hebrew Day School in California, use flexible, sliding-scale tuition models.

“There is no silver bullet,” said Daniel Perla, director of financial vitality at Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools, a new umbrella organization serving nearly 400 Jewish day schools across the denominational spectrum in North America. “National funders have all come to realize that the only thing that will get us to more affordable schools is a whole series of small interventions.”

The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey has been working on a different approach to the tuition crisis. Several years ago, the federation helped create a cooperative that negotiates with vendors on behalf of area day schools, congregational schools and Jewish institutions.

Using collective bargaining power, the Kehilla Cooperative has been able to negotiate reduced costs on everything from gas and electric bills to office supplies and credit card processing.

“On utilities alone, we have saved day schools over $600,000 since inception,” said federation CEO Jason Shames.

While philanthropy and innovative educational models have a role to play, many day school advocates say the game changer is bringing more public money into non-public schools — something President Donald Trump and his pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, support.

“I’m very much in favor of school choice,” Trump wrote in his book “Crippled America.”

The OU’s Fagin said he’d like to see more grassroots effort by day school parents petitioning their elected representatives.

“This issue cannot be resolved effectively unless yeshivot and day schools receive their fair share of government funding,” said Fagin, formerly an attorney and chairman of the law firm Proskauer Rose. “Our families pay taxes. They’re getting back pennies on the dollar compared to what others are receiving in the form of public education. From our perspective, this is an issue of civil rights. We are not going to be satisfied until there is actually a meaningful rollback on tuition.”

“Listeners, supporters are trending up,” said network General Manager Miriam L. Wallach of Woodmere. “People are looking for something good, something different to listen to.”

Segal’s guests include authors, community leaders, government officials and newsmakers as well as musicians. “I like to say that I’m always preparing, taking notes” for the morning show and a weekly current events segment on the Friday show, he said.

“What’s great about Nachum is they don’t always have mainstream [Jewish] music, they have somewhat alternative styles of Jewish music,” Kunstler said. “I think it’s cool.”

Kunstler, whose father Avi is also a musician, said he grew up in a recording studio since the first grade. “When hockey wasn’t going to work out, I picked up a guitar and made a career out it,” he said. He has played on a record with his father and his dad performed on Aryeh’s second album, “Our Eyes Are on You.” He grew up in Rockaway Beach, and now his parents and a

grandmother are in Lawrence, and one of his brothers lives in Woodmere. Another brother is, he said, kiddingly, is in the sixth of Five Towns — Israel.

At Saturday night’s taping, the musicians — Kunstler on guitar and vocals, Gli Lax on keyboards, drummer Israel Reches and bassist Mitch Friedman — cranked out six songs, including “Split the Sea,” “Modeh Ani,” Hashem Melech,” “Mi Chamocha,” “Ani Maumia Zusha” and “Hafaenta.” Shy Clyman served as the band’s sound mixer. Some audience members could be seen singing along.

As for who is going to win the big game, Segal, a Jets fan, did not offer a prediction but said he was pleased “that both team owners are great supporters of Israel.” Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft are wellknown as contributors to Jewish causes.

By Jeffrey Bessen, Editor, Nassau Herald When Nachum Segal was a child, he would listen to sports, especially Yankees games, with a transistor radio under his pillow. He’s grown that childhood passion into a more than threedecades-long broadcasting career.

Segal, the man behind the Nachum Segal Network (NSN) and the voice of JM in the AM (Jewish Moments in the Morning), brought his four-year-old Kosher Halftime Show to Cedarhurst’s Courtside Grill for a live videotaping last motzei Shabbos. The program will air on the NSN’s digital channels during halftime on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5.

Four years ago, Segal began doing a Kosher Halftime Show as an option for observant Jews who do not want to watch the immodest entertainment offered during the break in the big game’s action.

“In 2014, we first did it to make a point for people in this country — that as wonderful as the Super Bowl is, they didn’t want to watch and didn’t want their children exposed to the Super Bowl halftime show,” Segal said. “We view our programming as a statement. It’s value-laden programming and a family-oriented alternative.”

After two years in the studio and last year taping at the Teaneck Doghouse, a kosher sports-themed restaurant similar to Courtside Grill, Segal came to the Five Towns. His musical guest was the EvanAl Orchestra, featuring Cedarhurst resident Aryeh Kunstler.

Segal recounted that when he was five or six listening to the transistor, “it was the magic of the voice coming out of that box.”

He said he was pushed by his late mother, Esther Segal, to explore his interest while in college. “It was just the whole magic, the intimacy of the medium. I fell in love with it.”

At Yeshiva University in 1981, he worked at the school’s oncampus station, WYUR. Two years later, Segal became the head of Jewish programming at WFMU, an FM station that broadcasts from New Jersey and into New York City, the Hudson Valley and parts of Pennsylvania.

JM in the AM went live in September 1983 on WFMU, and Segal later expanded its audience into Jewish communities throughout the world on the web and through an NSN app. Many listeners begin their days at 6 am with the program’s intro song, Modeh Ani. In December, Segal ended his network’s use of terrestrial radio and began offering its 24/6 output exclusively over the digital Nachum Segal Network.

Understanding G-d’s world begins with a question The hearT of jerusalem

D

id you know that the success of the Entebbe mission was born of a question?

In July 1976, an Air France airliner was hijacked and taken to the Entebbe airport in Uganda. After separating Israelis and passengers with Jewish-sounding names from everyone else, the Arab and German terrorists announced they would begin murdering hostages unless their demands were met.

Commanders of elite Israeli commando units, desperate to find a way to save the hostages, were in a briefing room in Tel Aviv. The plan was to parachute commandoes with fast attack dinghies into Lake Victoria from where they would come ashore and take the airport terminal.

Effie Eitam, who would ultimately command one of the units that participated in the rescue raid that would stun the world, was sitting in the briefing room discussing options, when an Israeli who had spent some time in Uganda happened to walk in to see if he could help. Noticing the map with Lake Victoria in the center and hearing a part of the discussion he asked a simple question: “Are you guys thinking about jumping into Lake Victoria?”

When heads nodded affirmatively he recounted that when he was in Uganda on an agricultural mission years earlier, he had heard that dictator Idi Amin would get rid of his enemies by taking them out for a ride on his yacht and throwing them overboard: “That lake is swarming with alligators. If you drop commandoes there none of them will ever reach the shore.”

silence in the room, and then they began exploring other options. hat is the secret of Jewish continuity?

This week’s portion of Bo relates how G-d, during the last of the plagues, as the Jewish people prepare to leave Egypt, the emphasis not on what is happening now, but rather how to ensure that the Exodus will not be forgotten later: “Ve’higad’ta le’vincha bayom ha’hu” (“And you shall tell your children on that day”). (Shemot 13:8) Hidden in all the glory of the Exodus is the imperative that we remember to educate our children never to forget the story not only of how the Jewish people were freed but why.

Indeed some of the verses in this week’s portion are the basis for the famous passages in the Pesach Haggadah regarding the four sons.

“And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ tell them ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to G-d, who passed over … and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians’.” (Shemot 12:26-27) “In days to come, when your son asks you ’What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘with a mighty hand G-d brought us out of Egypt’.” (ibid. 13; 14) Why does the Torah emphasize the fact that the children need to ask us about the story of the Exodus? Why is it not enough for them to simply be told?

Judaism suggests it’s all about the question.

It’s when something bothers you that you become determined to find the answer; thus the question is the essence of healthy educational experience.

In the Talmud, often questions are asked which cannot be answered, and the sugya (top-

ic) concludes with the word: Teiku which stands for: Tishbi (Elijah) Ya’aneh (will come and answer) Kushyot Ve’she’eilot (difficulties and questions). And the Talmud seem quite satisfied leaving the question unanswered, because the secret to good education teaching and motivating our children how to ask good questions.

One year, months in advance of Pesach, I got up the nerve to ask Rav Amital, our Rosh Yeshiva if I could join his Pesach Seder. He simply said “betach!” (sure!)

So a few weeks before Pesach I found myself getting more and more nervous. What if he asked me a question I should know and could not answer? What if I was asked to perform some part of the ritual and was not sure which ruling we accepted?

The night of the Seder there were a few of us students who had been lucky enough to be included at Rav Amital’s Seder table. It was a large table and Rav Amital was at one end surrounded by what I soon realized were his grandchildren, then came all of his adult children and family, with us, the students, all the way at the other end.

And as we began the Seder, Rav Amital looked at us and reminded us in a loud voice: “This Seder is all about the children; the rest of you (and here he included his adult children) are not important tonight; later if and when they all go to sleep we can talk.” But “later” never came. I watched as Rav Amital masterfully, with trays of nuts and treats arrayed before him, cajoled, bribed and joked with his grandchildren as they went through the Seder which we all joined … as spectators!

It was a powerful educational experience, which informs and guides my own Pesach Seder table to this day.

Freedom newly gained demands the question: Freedom for what?

hen discussing the four questions we are meant to ask at the Seder, based in part on the verses in this week’s portion, the Talmud in Pesachim asks what a person should do if he is alone on the night of the Seder. After all, what is the point of asking yourself questions you already have answered? But that is precisely what the Talmud says we should do — because education begins with a good question.

In possibly the first real dialogue a Jew has with G-d, Avraham begins by asking (as a way of challenging) G-d: “Will the Judge of the entire world not do Justice?!”

And when Iyov (Job) finally can take no more, G-d responds to his great question … with four chapters of questions! “Where were you when I brought forth the calf to be born … and when I caused the sun to rise…?”

And in the Haggadah, when relating to the only one of the four sons who does not know how to ask questions, the passage reads Ve’at petach lo” (“You must open him”), which may mean “You must find a way to open him up to get him to ask the questions.”

On one level, freedom was never the goal; Judaism has always believed that freedom is simply a means to an ends. Freedom newly gained demands the question: Freedom for what?

And if we ever stop appreciating and understanding that freedom is a responsibility to make a better world, then we will surely lose it. And children who ask questions, who are engaged … they care and are curious and will continue seeking and engaging to find the answers.

Too often, we stifle the questions of our children and students and even those questions we ourselves have. We need not fear the questions, we need only ignite our passion to find the answers often waiting around the corner, which, of course, will simply lead to … new questions.

Meet 10 Jews in the Trump Administration

By Josefin Dolsten, JTA American Jews are watching the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidency with both fear and hope. Many have expressed worries about some of his supporters’ ties to the socalled “alt-right” movement, whose followers traffic variously in white nationalism, antiimmigration sentiment, anti-Semitism and a disdain for political correctness. Others have praised Trump’s stance on Israel and his nomination of David Friedman, a bankruptcy lawyer who supports West Bank settlement construction and has expressed doubts about the two-state solution, as U.S. ambassador to Israel.

Trump won 24 percent of the Jewish vote, with especially strong support in the Orthodox community.

Here is a look at the president’s Jewish advisers who will be helping to shape U.S. policy.

Jared Kushner

Trump’s Orthodox son-in law is serving as a senior adviser to the president. The 36-yearold scion of a prominent real estate family from New Jersey, Kushner will focus on the Middle East and Israel as well as partnerships with the private sector and free trade, according to the New York Times. A day before his appointment was announced, Kushner said he would step down from his role as CEO of his family firm, Kushner Properties.

He will not be paid for his White House role.

Kushner, who married Trump’s daughter Ivanka in 2009, played a crucial role in the president’s campaign, especially on Israel. He worked on Trump’s speech to the AIPAC annual policy conference that earned the real estate mogul a standing ovation, and helped plan a trip to Israel for his father-in-law last year. (Trump canceled the trip after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed his call to ban Muslim immigration to the United States.)

Kushner may have become a household name during the campaign, but he’s no stranger to the limelight. In 2006, at 25, he bought the New York Observer newspaper.

Two years later he became CEO of Kushner Properties, four years after his father was sent to jail for tax evasion, illegal campaign donations and witness tampering. In 2015, Fortune named Kushner to its 40 Under 40 list, an “annual ranking of the most influential young people in business.”

David Friedman

Friedman, a bankruptcy expert and longtime Trump attorney who is a resident of the Five Towns and owns a home in Jerusalem, was tapped as the U.S. ambassador to Israel. A statement by Trump’s transition team in December said Friedman, who speaks Hebrew, would serve from Jerusalem, but White House press secretary Sean Spicer said last week that Trump had yet to decide on moving the embassy from Tel Aviv.

Friedman, 58, is the son of the longtime spiritual leader of Temple Hillel in North Woodmere with a family history of ties to Republican presidential candidates (his family hosted Ronald Reagan for a Shabbat lunch in 1984, the year he won re-election).

Friedman has expressed support for and funded construction in Judea and Samaria (he’s been president of Bet El Institutions) has expressed doubt about the future of the two-state solution, traditionally a pillar of bipartisan U.S. policy in the region. Some of his statements — including slamming backers of J Street as “far worse than kapos” and charging President Obama with “blatant anti-Semitism” — have sparked outrage from liberal groups.

conflict, U.S.-Cuba relations and American trade agreements with other countries. An Orthodox Jew and Yeshiva University graduate, Greenblatt, 50, studied at Yeshivat Har Etztion and did armed guard duty there.

Originally from Forest Hills, the father of six from Teaneck (his eldest three are triplets) has cited the American Israel Public Affairs Committee as one of his main sources for staying informed about the Jewish state, and helped draft Trump’s speech at the lobbying group’s annual conference last March.

He has said that he supports the two-state solution, has implied that Trump will take a laissez-faire approach to peace building.

“He is not going to impose any solution on Israel,” Greenblatt told Israel’s Army Radio in November. He also said that Trump “does not view Jewish settlements as an obstacle to peace.”

Steven Mnuchin

Trump picked Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs executive who worked as Trump’s national finance chairman during the campaign, to serve as Treasury secretary. Trump and Mnuchin have been friends for 15 years, and prior to being in charge of Trump’s campaign finances, served as an adviser.

Part of what the New York Times describes as one of Manhattan’s “most influential families,” Mnuchin, 54, and his father — the prominent art dealer Robert Mnuchin — both became wealthy working at Goldman Sachs. The younger Mnuchin also cofounded the entertainment company RatPacDune Entertainment, which has worked on such Hollywood hits as “Avatar” and “Black Swan.”

Some saw Trump teaming up with Mnuchin as unusual, considering that the real-estate mogul had consistently bashed Goldman Sachs during his campaign — but it doesn’t seem to have hindered a good working relationship.

Miller, who has described himself as “a practicing Jew,” joined the Trump campaign in early 2016, quickly rising through the ranks to become “one of the most important people in the campaign,” as Trump’s campaign manager told the Wall Street Journal.

Previously the 31-year-old worked for seven years as an aide to Trump’s choice for attorney general, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., helping the lawmaker draft materials to kill a bipartisan Senate immigration reform bill.

by Trump on the issue, such as calling for building a wall on the Mexican border and banning Muslim immigration to the U.S. Though Miller grew up in a liberal Jewish home in Southern California, he was drawn to conservative causes early. As a high school student he wrote a letter to the editor of a local paper in which he slammed his school for providing free condoms to students and for making announcements both in English and Spanish, among other things.

Icahn, a businessman and investor, is serving as a special adviser on regulatory reform issues. He is working as a private citizen rather than a federal employee or special government employee.

An early supporter of Trump’s candidacy, Icahn, 80, is the founder of Icahn Enterprises, a diversified conglomerate based in New York formerly known as American Real Estate Partners.

Order concerns OU, RCA, Agudath America’s three leading Orthodox organizations issued statements regarding President Trump’s executive order on immigration.

Agudath Israel issued this statement: “The immense contributions of immigrants to American life need no elaboration, nor does the importance of immigration to our great nation.

The world refugee crisis, moreover, must compel our deep concern for those fleeing persecution, as did so many of our own forebears.

“President Trump’s recent executive order seeks to protect the nation’s citizens from terrorism, an unarguably honorable quest. The strict vetting process that has long been in place has certainly helped keep terrorists and their recruiters from entering our country. The executive order is aimed at temporarily strengthening that line of defense. As such, it is laudable. But only if its focus is on places, on countries that are hotbeds of violent radicalism, not on religious populations.

“And only if tempered by true concern for innocent refugees, who do not deserve to be caught up in nets intended to catch their oppressors.

“We urge the administration to continue to evaluate the geopolitical situation and exercise great deliberation as it forges a permanent immigration policy, so that what results will well balance security concerns with human and religious rights.”

The Orthodox Union and the Rabbinical Council of America reaffirmed principles in a joint statement from December 2015 in which they called “on all Americans to reaffirm that discrimination against any group based solely upon religion is wrong and anathema to the great traditions of religious and personal freedoms upon which this country was founded.”

The OU and RCA said: “We recognize that the complex issues that face us in ensuring the safety and security from terror of innocents and free societies throughout the world need to be addressed, but need to be done in sober and responsible ways.

“We call upon … the United States government to recognize the threats posed by radical Islamists, while preserving and protecting the rights of all people who seek peace, no matter how they worship G-d.”

By Andrew Silow-Carroll, JTA When Jews joined the protests around the country this weekend against President Trump’s executive order on immigration, they were largely doing so on behalf of Muslim refugees and migrants who found themselves in a legal limbo and barred from entering the United States.

But nearly 100 years ago Jewish protesters gathered to demand the release of fellow Jews, who were caught up in a legal drama eerily similar to the one that has played out in airports and courts since Friday.

On Nov. 15, 1923, 2,000 Jews rallied at the Lower Manhattan headquarters of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society to protest the detention of 3,000 of their relatives at Ellis Island. They appealed to Republican President Calvin Coolidge to ease the strict moratorium on immigration that had been put in place in 1921 under the “Emergency Quota Act” and re-upped the following year.

Anti-immigrant groups had long argued that immigrants from poorer and “backward” regions of southern and eastern Europe were a drain on American resources and brought with them radical ideas like anarchism, communism and socialism. Some labor unions, too, joined the antiimmigrant spirit, arguing that cheap labor would depress wages.

Like Muslim travelers detained at U.S. airports this week or left in limbo in transit countries as a result of Trump’s executive order, Jewish and other immigrants often set sail unaware of changes in the immigration law, or aboard ships whose unscrupulous operators didn’t inform them that there were strict quotas already in place.

likely Jewish as well. (A couple of hints were dropped during the series. Asner, unlike Harper, is Jewish in real life.)

The era saw a lot of onscreen Jews who confounded the old stereotypes. Segal in “The Quiller Memorandum,” scripted by Pinter, screwed over Nazis with zest and humor.

Dustin Hoffman did the same in “Marathon Man,” with a script by William Goldman and directed by John Schlesinger.

Barbra Streisand, directed by Peter Bogdanovich in “What’s Up, Doc?” seduced with authority and without shame. And Charles Grodin and Jeannie Berlin in “The Heartbreak Kid,” written and directed by May, married and imploded because he was corroded by ambition, and they did it as fully realized Jews.

But the creators and performers in almost all these instances were Jews. Tyler Moore and Tinker, neither Jewish, created Jewish characters just as vital — and as necessary

— to expanding the non-Jewish American imagination. That necessity was made explicit in the 1972 episode titled “Some of My Best Friends are Rhoda.”

JTA’s sister site, Jewniverse, reviewed the episode last year. Mary Richards dumps a new friend because she doesn’t get along with Rhoda, in part because Rhoda is Jewish. (That “in part” is important — the show was not didactic; the women don’t get along for a range of reasons.)

Joanne, the new friend, is a buyer for a department store, and early in the show (which is set in Minneapolis) she says she travels to New York’s garment district — she jokingly, or half-jokingly, calls it “the most exotic” place she’s traveled to.

At the reveal, in the episode’s final moments, Mary rebukes Joanne when she says she just doesn’t have a lot of Jewish friends — she hasn’t gotten to know them well.

“Even in the garment center?” Mary asks.

Jews are not exotic in this universe: They are at its center, as woven into the fabric as blacks, Latinos and white Christians as homespun as Mary Richards. How can you immerse yourself in the garment business and not befriend Jews? In Mary Richards’ world, it was nuts not to.

••• Here’s Jewniverse’s summary of season 2, episode 23 of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, “Some of My Best Friends Are Rhoda”: Mary, a spunky gentile, is rear-ended by a woman named Joanne. The two become fast friends, and in classic sitcom formula, Mary’s Jewish, Bronx-born best friend, Rhoda Morgenstern, feels snubbed. Soon after, Mary is invited by her new friend Joanne to the country club to play doubles, and they need another player. But when Mary suggests they call Rhoda, Joanne’s true colors are shown.

Mary learns that the club prohibits Jews. Joanne pretends to abhor the rule, claiming she’s never had a chance to get to know any Jews herself. But when Mary suggests she spend time with Rhoda, a real live Jew, the expression on Joanne’s face says it all. Mary promptly ends the friendship — she will simply not tolerate anti-Semites.

Refreshingly, Mary doesn’t inform Rhoda of this exchange.

She’s not looking to score points, she was just doing what she knew to be right.

A consideration by Ron Kampeas, JTA There are plenty of paradigms in the history of humor for how Jews and non-Jews get along, or don’t: as persecutors and victims, as saviors and saved, as allies against a common oppressor. All are fraught with the tensions between the powerful and the disempowered, which makes sense: Fear drives humor.

But there is a uniquely American paradigm, one devoid of fear, instead celebrating the Jew as an inextricable part of the national fabric. Its best exemplar was Mary Tyler Moore, who died last Wednesday at 80.

Jews were coming into their own in the American popular imagination in the 1960s and 1970s: Jewish actors like Elliott Gould, Richard Benjamin and George Segal no longer changed their names. They were identifiably Jewish, but without shtick, and they could be villains and heroes, geniuses and brutes, lovers and rivals. That emergence was a function of the Jewish imagination, advanced by Jewish directors and writers like Elaine May, Harold Pinter, Philip Roth and Mike Nichols.

Mary Tyler Moore was famous in that era for a similar transition from pigeon-holed object — her shtick as the winsome wife on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” to a more deeply realized creation of her own imagination.

Mary Richards, the character she played in the show she produced with her husband, Grant Tinker, was single. She supported herself. She had a job that required brains. She would never marry for the sake of marrying. And she peopled that universe with characters — including Jews, especially Jews — who were as independent, as fully realized, as devoid of shtick as she was.

Rhoda Morgenstern, Mary Richards’ best friend, played by Valerie Harper, fell in love, adored her parents, lived upstairs, fretted about work and was unabashedly Jewish every second she was onscreen. Rhoda was considered slovenly, Mary was a priss. Rhoda was forward, Mary was shy. But the two thirtysomething unmarrieds genuinely loved one another.

And it wasn’t just Rhoda: The Morgensterns, her parents, were Jewish, the man Rhoda married was Jewish, and Lou Grant, the irascible, difficult boss played by Ed Asner, was

ast Saturday night, my husband Jerry and I dogsat for Penny, my adorable English Cocker Spaniel granddog, who belongs to my son Jeremy and his lovely wife Darya. Their good friends were moving out of town and they didn’t want to miss the send off party, so we happily agreed.

We left the house right after Shabbat, because we knew we would have the usual traffic on the way to their home in the city. Jerry dropped me off and he went hunting for parking. I rode the elevator with a cute bull dog named Chester. I asked his owner if he knew Penny, the English Cocker Spaniel. He replied, “Oh, the new girl in the building! Chester met her last week.” I love that there are always dogs coming and going in their building. The doorman said people walk their dogs at all hours of the night, so it keeps it interesting.

As soon as I walked in, Penny jumped all over me and smothered me with kisses. She’s such a cutie. They left and I played with Penny while waiting for Jerry. Well, let me tell you, I felt like chopped liver, when I saw the reception Jerry got from Penny. She would not stop licking and kissing him. I finally gave her a treat to separate them. About an hour later, I asked Jerry to take Penny out for a walk. I told him a ten-minute walk would be fine. Half an hour later, I wondered where he was. After 45 minutes I started to get nervous, so I called him but he didn’t answer. I tried again after an hour, to no avail. “Great” I thought, “Could he have gotten lost? Did he lose Penny? Or did he just lose track of time?”

An easy Jewish dessert: 2 ingredient rugelach

By Shannon Sarna The Nosher via JTA Everyone enjoys a good recipe hack, and I think you will love this one: two ingredient rugelach!

That’s right: just a package of puff pastry, filling and that’s it. You can make flaky, sweet, indulgent rugelach for your next Shabbat dinner, brunch or just because you need something with your afternoon cup of tea, within 30 minutes.

I like to use chocolate hazelnut spread, but you could use a cookie butter or jam – or try something savory like goat cheese and herbs. Top with a quick beaten egg and bake for 16 go 18 minutes, or until golden.

Doesn’t get a whole lot easier than that.

Yield: 2 dozen Ingredients: 2 sheets puff pastry (thawed overnight in fridge or on counter for an hour), chocolate hazelnut spread or other filling, 1 egg lightly beaten.

Directions: Thaw your puff pastry overnight, or for an hour out on the counter.

Take each sheet of puff pastry and spread with filling, leaving 1/4-inch border.

Cut puff pastry in half lengthwise. Then

2 Tbsp. soy sauce 1/4 tsp. garlic powder (or 1/2 clove garlic, minced) Dash liquid smoke (Wright’s liquid smoke has a hashgacha) Directions: Fill a large pot halfway with water and bring to boil. Lower the heat to medium and cook the carrots until you can barely pierce through them with a fork. Be careful not to cut the carrots when testing!

Combine all the other ingredients together in a plastic container or baggie to make the marinade. Place the cooked carrots inside, shake up, and set aside to marinate for at least 3 hours. You can marinate for up to a few days — we marinated ours for about 4 hours, and they turned out very flavorful.

When you’re ready to serve, pour the carrots and marinade into a large pan on the stovetop or grill on medium heat, rotating periodically, for 5 to 10 minutes, until carrots are heated all the way through.

Place on a hot dog bun, add the toppings of your choice, and enjoy! (You can cut them in half for smaller servings and have 8 instead of 4.)

Ingredients: Canola oil for frying 2 large yellow onions sliced into small pieces 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1/4 tsp. Black pepper 1 egg 2 packages frozen pastry dough 12 slices of pastrami, each cut in half 8 hot dogs cut into thirds Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until soft and dark brown, but not burnt. Stir in salt and pepper strain and cool and set aside. In a small bowl, beat 2 eggs and set aside.

Arrange puff pastry on a baking sheet and cut into 24 triangles, each about 2 inches by 3 inches. Transfer sheet to fridge, cover with plastic wrap, and keep refrigerated while working on the next step.

Remove a few pieces of puff pastry from refrigerator at a time, so that the rest remain chilled until ready to use. Spoon about 2 teaspoons of onion onto a 3-inch end of each puff pastry triangle, and add a piece of pastrami, then top with a piece of hot dog and roll up starting with hot dog end first. Along the way, using your fingers or a pastry brush, dab the puff pastry with a bit of egg wash to help seal.

Transfer to a baking sheet, sprayed with Pam, seam side down. Brush lightly with beaten egg, and bake until puffed and golden brown, about 25 minutes. Transfer to a platter and serve with mustard.

I screamed into the phone, “Where in the world are you?” Well actually it was a little harsher than that, but this is a family paper. He excitedly explained that a lot of people complimented on how pretty Penny was.

He went on to say one couple stopped him and the husband had tears in his eyes, as he explained he had the same breed and his dog died the year before and they were still mourning her. Then he met the woman who had a dog that would not separate from her. She had dog psychologists working with her and her dog but she couldn’t leave the house without the dog. Orthodox pleased by Gorsuch, others peeved

By Ron Kampeas, JTA President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening nominated to the Supreme Court Neil Gorsuch, 49, a federal Appeals Court judge known to favor protections of religious belief in the public square and for business owners.

The nomination, likely to trigger a vigorous confirmation battle, is already splitting the organized Jewish community, with the Orthodox Union describing his record as “encouraging” and the Reform movement expressing concerns.

Among Gorsuch opinions attracting Jewish interest was Burwell vs. Hobby Lobby in 2013, when the appeals court upheld the right of a private business to reject the government mandate to provide contraceptive care under employee health plans. The Obama administration had offered leeway on such coverage to faith-based non-profits, but would not extend them to private businesses.

On Sunday, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said the administration had no regrets about failing to mention the Jews. He added that Friday’s statement was crafted to recognize all victims of the Holocaust. Sorry Reince, but as the late great Elie Wiesel used to say, “While not all victims were Jews, all Jews were victims.”

On Monday, Press Secretary Sean Spicer had a go at it. When reminded that even the Republican Jewish Coalition criticized the president for the Judenrein Holocaust statement, Spicer lashed out. He explained that Trump’s record of defending Israel speaks for his allegiance to the Jewish people.

“It is pathetic that people are picking on his statement,” he said. “I mean, the idea that you’re nitpicking a statement that sought to remember this tragic event that occurred, and the people who died in it, is just ridiculous. I think he acknowledged the suffering that existed and wants to make sure that it’s enshrined in the American people’s memory, so that something like this never ever happens again.” resident Trump is a big supporter of the Jewish people and the Jewish State of Israel, and Jews, especially conservative ones like yours truly, appreciate his support. However, that support does not mean he should not be criticized when he (or his staff) takes an action, or releases a statement, that is just plain wrong.

I am disappointed that Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law whose grandparents are Holocaust survivors, hasn’t chimed in since Friday’s statement was made. (Some believe that Kushner

wrote or approved the statement. Spicer said the statement was written “with the help of an individual who is both Jewish and the descendants of Holocaust survivors.” Asked if it was Kushner, Spicer refused to say.)

The Jew-less statement feeds into the Holocaust revisionism which denies the uniqueness of the Holocaust and the Jews being singled out for extermination. Today all across the world Holocaust deniers and European nationalists seek to downplay the fact that the Jews were targeted for genocide, and try to focus instead on the suffering of non-Jewish Poles, Lithuanians, Germans, French and others, with the Jews being just another group.

Of course, there was suffering and heroism of non-Jews during the Holocaust. But only the Jews were singled out for complete annihilation as a race worldwide by the Nazis. Hitler placed the genocide of the Jewish people throughout the world as a central goal the Third Reich. It was right up there with conquering the world.

I am not suggesting that the Administration was purposely trying to feed Holocaust revisionism, but that will be the result of its error.

Speaking at the Holocaust Memorial in Washington on Holocaust Remembrance Day, Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer said, “After the Holocaust took away so much from the Jews, we must not take the Holocaust itself away from the Jews.”

The Trump administration statement on Holocaust Memorial Day displayed a total lack of understanding of this horrible period in history. The doubling down of by members of the administration made it even worse — and the fact that the Trump administration is very supportive of Israel and the Jewish people does not correct the error.

Tanya’s kosher workouts and 90-calorie challah

By Josefin Dolsten, JTA Most of the clients who visit Tanya Rosen, a Brooklyn-based nutritionist specializing in weight loss, are Orthodox Jews like herself.

Nutrition By Tanya operates five branches — in Monsey, Williamsburg, Flatbush, Borough Park and Lakewood — and plans to open three more locations in coming weeks. She also operates a fitness studio in Brooklyn.

Rosen, 35, said she’s helped “probably close to 10,000″ clients lose weight.

Observant Jews, Rosen noted, face a unique set of weight loss challenges, including a steady rotation of Shabbat and holiday meals, rules dictating modest dress that can make going to the gym uncomfortable, as well as a high rate of pregnancy among women.

Today, there is increased interest in healthy eating in the Orthodox community, said Mendel Singer, an associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland who has studied obesity in Jewish day schools. Singer found that children

at Orthodox day schools in the Cleveland area — and especially haredi Orthodox ones — were more likely to be obese than their counterparts at non-Orthodox schools.

“There’s a trend towards more exposure to these topics about eating healthier,” he told JTA, citing an increase in kosher cookbooks and articles in Jewish publications focusing on a balanced diet. More conversation around the topic of healthy eating can “help people to realize that it is an issue to be sensitive to.”

Rosen’s expanding business is a testament to that trend. She recently introduced “Tanya-approved” health-conscious menus in four kosher restaurants in Brooklyn and Monsey.

As part of the services she offers, Rosen makes personalized six-week menus for clients — including meals designed for Shabbat and Jewish holidays — so they know exactly what and how much to eat. The schedule provides three to four choices for each meal, such as chicken and rice, fish and baked potato, and whole wheat wrap with tuna and vegetables. Clients then visit one

of the offices on a weekly basis to be weighed, review the plan, and discuss challenges and possible changes.

Additionally, Rosen sells a line of prepared kosher diet food products — known as “Tanya Approved Products,” or TAP, including muffins, soups and portion-controlled, 90-calorie challah rolls —at her Nutrition By Tanya locations.

Rosen’s women-only fitness studio, Shape Fitness, in Midwood, offers such classes such as Pilates, kickboxing and zumba, as well as personal training.

For those who prefer working out at home, she also sells “kosher” exercise videos featuring covered-up instructors and instrumental music (to avoid suggestive lyrics).

Rosen’s nutrition counselors are Orthodox Jews, so they can “really relate to the [clients’] lifestyle and the struggles,” she said.

The mother of four attributes her success to a lot of hard work — Rosen described her schedule as “a little beyond full time.” Her workday goes from 7 am to about midnight, with a break in

the evening to spend time with her family. She said she’s always reachable via text to answer her clients’ questions, such as which product to buy in the grocery store or what to order at a restaurant.

“I’m probably never just relaxing,” she said.

Though Rosen declined to give a success rate, she said that anyone who follows her plan, with the exception of those with a medical condition requiring treatment by a doctor, “does well and loses weight.”

Should clients need extra inspiration, all they need to do is look at Rosen. She embarked on a weight loss journey after her first pregnancy in 2004. As Rosen shed 40 pounds she gained a newfound interest, which led her to enroll in a master’s program in nutrition and ultimately launch her business.

Rosen said the positive effects she has seen in clients’ lives, such as increased confidence and better work productivity, keep her motivated to continue her busy lifestyle.

“Even the worst day is a good day,” she said.

YU seforim sale opens this Sunday The students of Yeshiva University will present their annual Seforim Sale, billed as North America’s largest Jewish book sale, from Feb. 5–26.

The 30th anniversary sale, is operated entirely by YU students — from ordering books to setting up the premises, marketing and all the technology the project demands. The event, open to the public, is in Belfer Hall, 2495 Amsterdam Ave .on YU’s Wilf Campus in Washington Heights.

Last year’s sale drew more than 15,000 people from the tri-state area and grossed close to $1 million. The annual event provides discounted prices on the latest of nearly 12,500 titles in rabbinic and academic literature, cookbooks and children’s books. The 2017 Seforim Sale will also offer a wide range of music and Judaica options from around the world.

The theme of this year’s sale is Technology and Torah. Programming throughout the Sale will focus on the ways technological innovations can enhance and aid Torah learning for the modern Jew. “Technology is constantly evolving around us, and as religious Jews we sometimes struggle to find the right balance of what and how much of it to incorporate in our lives,” said Avi Sebbag, CEO of the Seforim Sale.

“We wanted to showcase the many positive ways that technology can impact learning and Judasim—whether it’s a resource like Sefaria that is so helpful in putting together source sheets forshiurim (lectures) or an app that helps teach children bedtime prayers.”

Benedict’s speech was part of the HAFTR Holocaust education initiative, which culminates with a week-long trip to Europe after Purim.

Rabbi Gedalia Oppen, principal, explained that the upcoming senior trip is not only to pay tribute to the victims by visiting concentration camps but to inspire students by giving them a glimpse into the life of European Jewry before the war.

HANC 10th graders at Queens open house

By Adena Cohen, sophomore HANC’s sophomore engineering recently visited Queens College to attend the 20th Annual Science Open House for High School Students presented by Stony Brook University. At the seminar, the students, who were accompanied by their instructor, Victoria Pero, experienced events related to both biology and chemistry.

The engineering class began with a lecture on non-Newtonian fluids and received a hands-on experience with a substance that is still being researched.

The class visited the Holtzman Lab and viewed the development of zebra fish embryo. Silly putty (hydrophobic materials in nature) and fake milkshakes (polyurethane foam) were created by the students in two lessons that followed.

After lunch, the students viewed the Hayden Memorial Chemistry Show, a show that demonstrated a variety of chemical reactions such as explosions and color transformations that received a great response from the crowd.

DRSers together again … in Israel DRS Every year, a number of DRS rabbeim visit alumni learning in nearly 20 different yeshivot in Israel, to reconnect with them, and continue to strengthen the rebbe-talmud relationship that DRS is so famous for. It gives the school tremendous nachat to see so many alumni growing through their experience in yeshiva abroad.

Novice JV girl Hurricanes win for HANC HANC The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County HS’ Girls JV Basketball team clinched first place in MYHSAL east division in their inaugural season.

In a division that features perennial Yeshiva League powerhouses, the HANC team worked to reach the top, anchored by a core of sophomores and complemented by freshmen. The Hurricanes clinched the playoffs after opening the season 6-0, which included wins against Flatbush, Ramaz, and Central. Just two games later, after an impressive 45-29 win over North Shore, the Hurricanes were celebrated as division champs.

Winning the division has earned the Team a firstround playoff bye, which sends them to the semifinals once the season concludes next week.

Girls JV Basketball team is one of five HANC teams to have already clinched playoffs (for the third year in a row all four of HANC’s boys teams have made the playoffs). The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team can also clinch the playoffs with a win in their final game of the season later this week.

Minyan men helping out at Shulamith CAHAL A special event took place on a Monday morning at the Shulamith School for Girls in Cedarhurst as a group of dedicated fathers turned the school’s auditorium into a Bait Knesset for a day.

Students in grades 6 and 8 have been learning hilchot tefilla year with their teachers, morahs Shoshana Fischman and Alisa Schreier. The seventh graders learned halachot last year. The minyan enabled the girls to put into practice what they have learned about responding to kaddish, kedusha and borchu, and listening to chazarat hashatz and the Torah reading.

Stewart Greenberg, father of eighth grader Shoshi, served as the baal tefillah; Akiva Sacknovitz, father of sixth grader Eliana, read the Torah, and Chaim Schneider, father of seventh grader Lani, served as gabbai.

CAHAL On Sunday, January 22, the first grade CAHAL class at Yeshiva Ketana of Long Island joined with mainstream YKLU students in the annual Chumash Mesiba.

The presentation, planned by mainstream YKLI rabbeim, Rabbi Yaakov Morgenbesser and Rabbi Eliohu Schloss, was a huge success. Thirty-five first graders impressed onlookers with their knowledge of dikduk and fluency of pesukim. The incredible warmth of the rabbeim spilled over as the boys sang one niggun after another.

“I’m very proud of the accomplishments of every single boy in my class,” said Rabbi Feivish Rotbard, their Rebbe.

“Each and every day is a new world of discovery and excitement. They all push themselves to live up to our high expectations.”

CAHAL acknowledges the time and efforts of Rabbi Zvi Bajnon, Rosh HaYeshiva, Rabbi Tzvi Krigsman, Menahel, Rabbi Shlomo Dovid Pfeiffer, S’gan Menahel, and YKLI Executive Director Rabbi Ari Ginian in making a home for their first grade class. This appreciation is expressed by the boys’ parents as well.

“I am extremely grateful for the respect, kindness and sensitivity shown towards my son and his classmates at the Chumash Mesiba and every day at Yeshiva Ketana,” said Pamela Savitt. “The boys of CAHAL were so well prepared. They blended seamlessly with the mainstream classes. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of their CAHAL teachers and the yeshiva.”

CAHAL, the local yeshiva-based and sponsored community program for children with learning challenges, now in its 24th year, provides smaller, more individualized classes in the local yeshivas catering to children’s learning styles, where all the students attend mainstream activities daily, including lunch, recess, specials, assemblies, trips and more. ‘11 million’ tally irks historians of the Holocaust

By Ron Kampeas, JTA WASHINGTON — “Five million non-Jews died in the Holocaust.”

It’s a statement that shows up regularly in declarations about the Nazi era. And it was asserted in an article shared by the Trump White House in defense of its controversial Holocaust statement the same day omitting references to the 6 million Jewish victims.

It is, however, a number without any scholarly basis.

Indeed, say those close to the late Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal, its progenitor, it is a number that was intended to increase sympathy for Jewish suffering but which now is more often used to obscure it.

The White House statement sent waves of dismay through the Jewish community, including among groups that have been supportive of President Donald Trump.

By mentioning the “victims, survivors, [and] heroes of the Holocaust” without mentioning the Jews, said a host of Jewish organizations, the Jan. 27 statement risked playing into the hands of the European right, which includes factions that seek to diminish the centrality of the Jewish genocide to the carnage of World War II. In defending the omission of Jews from the statement, a White House spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, sent CNN a link to a 2015 Huffington Post-UK piece titled “The Holocaust’s Forgotten Victims: The 5 Million Non-Jewish People Killed By The Nazis.”

Sean Spicer, the White House spokesman, on Monday appeared to cite the same source, saying that the Nazis’ victims included Roma, gays, the disabled and priests. He called complaints about the statement “pathetic,” although some of those objections came from

two groups that otherwise have been supportive of Trump, the Republican Jewish Coalition and the Zionist Organization of America.

In the wake of the controversy, the world’s two leading Holocaust museums, in Washington and in Jerusalem, issued statements emphasizing the centrality of the annihilation of the Jews to the understanding of the Holocaust; neither mentioned Trump.

The “5 million” has driven Holocaust historians to distraction ever since Wiesenthal started to peddle it in the 1970s. Wiesenthal told the Washington Post in 1979, “I have sought with Jewish leaders not to talk about 6 million Jewish dead, but rather about 11 million civilians dead, including 6 million Jews.”

Yehuda Bauer, an Israeli Holocaust scholar who chairs the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, said he warned his friend Wiesenthal, who died in 2005, about spreading the false notion that the Holocaust claimed 11 million victims — 6 million Jews and 5 million non-Jews.

“I said to him, ‘Simon, you are telling a lie’,” Bauer recalled in an interview Tuesday. “He said, ‘Sometimes you need to do that to get the results for things you think are essential’.”

Bauer and other historians who knew Wiesenthal said the Nazi hunter told them that he chose the 5 million number carefully: He wanted a number large enough to attract the attention of non-Jews who might not otherwise care about Jewish suffering, but not larger than the actual number of Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust, 6 million.

It caught on: President Jimmy Carter, issuing the executive order that would establish the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, referred to the “11 million victims of the Holocaust.”

Deborah Lipstadt, a professor of Holocaust studies at Emory University in Atlanta, wrote in 2011 how the number continues to dog her efforts to teach about the Holocaust.

“I have been to many Yom Hashoah observances — including those sponsored by synagogues and Jewish communities — where eleven candles were lit,” she wrote in an article in the Jewish Review of Books in which she lacerated Wiesenthal’s ethical standards.

“When I tell the organizers that they are engaged in historical revisionism, their reactions range from skepticism to outrage. Strangers have taken me to task in angry letters for focusing ‘only’ on Jewish deaths and ignoring the five million others. When I explain that this number is simply inaccurate, in fact made up, they become even more convinced of my ethnocentrism and inability to feel the pain of anyone but my own people.”

The problem, according to Bauer, who has debunked the number repeatedly in his writings over the decades, is not that non-Jews were not victims; they were. It is that Wiesenthal’s arbitrarily chosen tally of non-Jewish victims diminishes the centrality to the Nazi ideology of systematically wiping any trace of the Jewish people from the planet.

In fact, he said, the term “genocide” could accurately be applied to the 2 million to 3 million Poles murdered and millions more enslaved by the Nazis. But the mass murder of the Poles, Roma and others should not come under the rubric “Holocaust,” a term that Holocaust historians generally dislike because of its religious connotations but nonetheless have accepted as describing only the annihilation that the Nazis hoped to visit on the Jews.

“All Jews of the world had to be annihilated,” Bauer said. “That was the intent. There

was never an idea in Nazi minds to murder all the Russians.”

The number 5 million also adheres to no known understanding of the number of nonJews killed by the Nazis: While as many as 35 million people were killed overall because of Nazi aggression, the number of non-Jews who died in the concentration camps is no more than half a million, Bauer said.

Using the 11 million figure often leads to muddled history. The Huffington Post-UK article Hicks linked to, for instance, lists as a separate class “twins,” as if Josef Mengele, the murderous doctor at Auschwitz, sought out twins of any heritage for his experiments. In fact, they were chosen only from among the Jews and Roma arriving at the camp.

Mark Weitzman, the director of government affairs for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said that Wiesenthal, in advancing the number, “never intended to minimize the Jewish specificity of the Shoah,” the Hebrew word for Holocaust.

“He was trying to draw attention to the fact that there were other victims of Nazi genocide,” Weitzman said.

Nonetheless, Weitzman acknowledged that Wiesenthal’s formulation, decades later, was inadvertently contributing to the efforts among right-wing nationalists in Europe to minimize Jewish suffering in the Holocaust.

“This is used as a political tool to minimize the Jewish aspect, to write it out of history, or to maximize other victims’ suffering to make them the prime victims and claim a place of honor in the role of victims,” he said. “Unfortunately to some people, it becomes a competitive game, especially for political purposes.”

Building a wall is nothing new AlAn JAy Gerber Kosher BooKworm

ll of the talk about the building of a wall between the United States and Mexico is nothing new in the affairs of nations, states, cities and even neighbors.

Just consider the walls around ancient Jericho, the medieval ghettos, the Warsaw Ghetto and Berlin … the list goes on.

Given current events it was most timely that the ongoing Daf Yomi Talmud study program recently reached the beginning of the study of Tractate Bava Batra, the third tractate of Seder Nezikin. And, given all the talk about building walls, how timely and ironic it is that the very first topic to be discussed in Bava Batra is, you got it, the building of walls.

Timed to the Daf Yomi program of study is the recent publication of the English edition of the Koren Talmud Bavli series Bava

Batra, based on the commentary by Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz, under the editorship of Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb and Rabbi Joshua Schreier.

The topic of wall building in Jewish law is contained within the first chapter of Bava Batra, and to really understand this whole issue, a good reading of both the introduction and the concluding summery would be well worth your time and effort.

Here are exerts from this valued Koren Talmud edition for your learning pleasure: “This chapter addresses issues concerning the division of jointly owned property and the erection of barriers. One series of questions relates to the separating wall: Are there fixed halachot concerning the height or thickness of the wall, or the materials of which the wall must be constructed? Where exactly is the wall erected, and who enjoys the rights to the wall, both the right to use it and the right to possess the materials from which it is constructed, should it one day collapse?

“When the two co-owners agree to build a barrier, the matter is relatively simple. But, what is the halacha when only one of the co-

owners wishes to divide the property and erect a barrier? Can one compel the other to contribute to the construction costs? There are even more basic questions: Can one party insist that jointly owned property be divided? Are all properties subject to the halacha of division, or are there certain properties that cannot be divided, whether the division is made unilaterally by one of the parties or with the consent of both parties?”

These issues taken from the Koren edition introduction are among the basic ones that are addressed in the first chapter of Bava Batra.

While this fascinating topic as discussed in the Talmud under review is limited to an ancient time, and in geographic scope, the application of normative Jewish law to this issue given current events should give us all much pride in the integrity of our divinely

ordained law and judicial tradition. The moral considerations that are inherent in the legal discussions should further enhance our appreciation of the deep devotion that our spiritual leaders of antiquity possessed in the development and deep discussion of this issue as applied to their times and needs.

These valued teachings should surely serve as an apt example and model for application in our own times.

The next time when you sit down to learn from the text of this tractate please consider the points alluded to above, consider the events current in the world today, and come to better appreciate the values of our religious and moral traditions that go back thousands of years yet, are still most relevant unto our own very day.

W

hen one reads the opening of Parshat Bo, it is hard to ignore the question of who has the bigger ego — Pharaoh or

G-d?

Over the course of the previous seven plagues, Pharaoh has actually given in four times. He allowed the Israelites to leave during the plague of frogs, twice in the plague of beasts, and once in the plague of hail. In each case, however, after the plague dissipated, he changed his mind, likely because his ego wouldn’t allow for him to give up his slaves so easily.

In G-d’s case, it seems that the plagues have taken on a life of their own, with their objective having become “So that Pharaoh will know that I am G-d.”

We all know who is going to win this proverbial battle of wits. It’s not even a contest. But the truth is, if the objective is for Pharaoh to

learn who G-d is, that was achieved during the plague of hail when Pharaoh declared, “I have sinned. G-d is righteous, while I and my nation are wicked!” (9:27) It’s difficult to pinpoint the turning point — with Pharaoh standing stubbornly in defiance of G-d, versus when G-d Himself strengthened Pharaoh’s heart. It first happened in the plague of boils, and we’re told in the prelude to the plague of locusts that “I have hardened [Pharaoh’s] heart as well as the heart of his servants, so my signs can be spread through them.”

It seems unfair at this point — even if Pharaoh were to give in, he has other devils controlling his mind.

He doesn’t stand a chance.

Rabbi David Fohrman has developed an innovative approach to the differences between the phrases “va’y’chazek et libo” and “va’yakhbed at libo” (strengthened and hardened his heart, respectively) which is worth perusing on his Alephbeta website. In a shiur I heard on yuto-

rah.org, Rabbi Zev Leff argues that the purpose of any strengthening of Pharaoh’s heart was to make it that he wouldn’t give in and let the Israelites leave Egypt on account of the plagues — he needed to come to the realization on his own that letting the slaves leave was the right thing to do, irrespective of plagues.

Which brings us to the question of G-d’s ego. here are many ways to explain G-d’s role in the world, what He represents, what He wants of us, and why He created the world in the first place.

Some of the answers include the desire to have a world of emet (truth), chesed (kindness), shalom (peace), and of course to spread His word and teaching through the Torah. Prior to the Torah being given, His purpose was for His Name to be known, an objective concretized by Avraham following the failed efforts and non-efforts of previous generations.

those capable of the greatest intellectual and spiritual heights, to forget about You? You don’t want them to take You and Your world for granted? This isn’t ego, this is normal, this is healthy pride. If I’m a CEO or business owner, I’d like my employees to at least know who I am and that their positions are guided by my rules.

It is true that Pharaoh seemed to recognize this in the plague of hail, but six verses after asking Moshe to pray for the hail to go away, we see that once the hail is gone, “And he continued to sin.” (9:34) Rashbam and Chizkuni note this timeline, suggesting that the explanation for the heardening of Pharaoh’s heart is Divine influence, based on the opening verse of our parsha in which G-d said to Moses, “Come to Pharaoh. I have made him and his advisors stubborn, so that I will be able to demonstrate these miraculous signs among them.”

Prior to this, we’ve seen G-d strengthen Pharaoh’s heart after the plague of boils, but not specifically after the devastating plague of hail.

So what gives? Why does G-d take credit for Pharaoh’s heardened heart in the foreshadowing of the plague of locusts, and not in the immediate aftermath of the plague of hails, where See Bo on page 21

The mitzvah-multiplying power of Rosh Chodesh rAbbi dAvid eTenGoff

R

osh Chodesh is one of the topics in this week’s Torah reading, parsha Bo: “The L-rd spoke to Moses and to Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying: ‘This month shall be to you (Hachodesh hazeh lachem) the head of the months; to you it shall be the first of the months of the year’.” (Shemot 12:2) Rosh Chodesh was the first mitzvah given to the Jewish people, as a nation, instead of to the families of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Rashi, basing himself upon a variety of Midrashic sources, gives voice to this idea in one of his glosses on the first verse of the Torah: “In the beginning: Rabbi Isaac said: ‘It was

not necessary to begin the Torah except from “This month shall be to you”,’ which is the first commandment that the Jewish people were commanded.”

Given Rosh Chodesh’s historical and legal significance to our people, it is not at all surprising that rabbinic literature is a treasure trove of halachic analyses and aggadic interpretations regarding its remarkable import. In particular, the figure of Rabbi Elazar ben Arach, the greatest of all the students of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai (Pirkei Avot II: 9-10), looms large in the list of famous Torah personalities associated with Rosh Chodesh.

The following Talmudic narrative highlights the singular significance of this mitzvah.

Rabbi Chelbo said: The wine of Perugitha and the water of Diomsith cut off the Ten Tribes from Israel [according to Rashi, due to their powerful hedonistic and anti-Torah influences]. Rabbi Elazar ben Arach visited

those places. He was attracted to them [the wine and the bath waters] and [in consequence,] his learning was uprooted [he forgot it]. When he returned [to the community of scholars], he arose to read the Torah. He wished to read, “Hachodesh hazeh lachem” (“This month shall be to you”) [but instead,] he read “Hacharesh hayah libbam” (“Their hearts were silent”). The scholars prayed for him, and his learning returned. (Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 147b) The second Bobover Rebbe, HaRav BenZion Halberstam zatzal (1874-1941), in his work, Kedushat Tzion, states the following regarding our Talmudic passage: “We must understand the words of our Sages and the quizzical nature as to why Rabbi Elazar ben Arach was called upon to read the specific parasha of ‘Hachodesh hazeh lachem’.” Rav Halberstam’s exploration of the connection between Rabbi Elazar and Rosh Chodesh

sheds a good deal of light upon the concept of mitzvah goreret mitzvah (one commandment brings another in its wake, Pirkei Avot 4:2), and the problems associated with mitzvat anashim m’lumdah (the automatic performance of a commandment): “The meforshim (commentators) ask, ‘Does the phrase, “mitzvah goreret mitzvah” really imply that an individual who performs one commandment will henceforth be like an unceasing river [of mitzvot observance], since one commandment brings another in its wake [ad infinitum] so that the entire rest of his life will be, by definition, mitzvot-infused?” (Kedushat Tzion) Rav Halberstam summarizes the commentators’ response to this question in the following fashion: “The meforshim address this difficulty by noting that the uniquely valuable reward inherent in the phrase “mitzvah See Rosh on page 21

Continued from page 20 such credit would be due? think the answer is that the heardening of Pharaoh’s heart is not an unfair tactic utilized by G-d to delay Pharaoh’s chances of salvation for himself and his people. Pharaoh prepared to let the slaves leave multiple times, and each time he backpedaled. And, after the hail, not only did he backpedal, but he sinned and doubled-down in his obstinance. What does it take, after you’ve said that G-d is righteous, to recognize the folly of your position?

For Pharaoh, it is a huge ego. He can’t admit he’s wrong for more than a minute. Even when the evidence is staring him in the face.

There is a lot of talk these days about what is right and wrong, who has an ego, who is a narcissist, what is best for this country, for other countries, for the world. Those of us who practice a little humility know we don’t have the answers, even if we think we know what’s correct. The world is complicated. Nothing is black and white.

Except, in the end, that this world is G-d’s world, and we must answer for the way in which we behaved and interacted with others.

We can yell and scream all we want about how we understand injustice and what it means. But if we are yelling and screaming and never respectfully listening to another point of view, we are not demonstrating the kind of qualities that are godlike — truth, kindness, peace. If, in the end, the purpose of the plagues was for Pharaoh to learn about G-d, we too must never remove G-d from how we relate to others. All people are created in the image of G-d.

What they do in the name of that image determines how we treat them, whether refugees and immigrants from across the globe or a neighbor with whom we have political differences.

If, however, the commandment is performed as a mitzvat anashim m’lumdah (without proper intention), it will not lead one to undertake another commandment.�

One of the clearest expositions of the somewhat elusive phrase, “mitzvat anashim m’lumdah,� was offered by the Malbim (Rabbi Meir Leibush ben Yechiel Michel, 18091879). His formulation helps us understand why a commandment performed in this manner fails to engender the performance of another commandment, since the one who acts in this fashion is existentially disconnected from the mitzvah-gesture: “There are those who perform the mitzvot solely because this is what they have become accustomed to do since their youth and they are used to performing them. They perform them without any cognitive gesture (kavanah) and without thought, even though they may know that they are commandments from G-d. They, however, do not perform them in any way because Hashem commanded them to do so. Instead, they perform them because this is what they were dictated to do by their teachers and parents. Given the above analysis, Rav Halberstam suggests that Rabbi Elazar ben Arach was frightened after reading “Hacharesh hayah libbam� in place of our pasuk’s phrase, “Hachodesh hazeh lachem.� Based upon his abiding humility, Rabbi Elazar believed his error resulted from having “failed to properly concentrate when fulfilling the commandments on prior occasions,� for if this were not the case, the great mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh — the subject of his Torah reading — should have come to his aid. After all, as the very first mitzvah given to the entire Jewish people, Rosh Chodesh is followed by all the other commandments, and thereby embodies the concept of mitzvah goreret mitzvah.

Rabbi Elazar, therefore, concluded that his mitzvot observance must have been on the low level of mitzvat anashim m’lumdah, which resulted in the loss of the reward and protection of mitzvah goreret mitzvah and made him susceptible to the lure of hedonistic pursuits and consequent loss of his Torah knowledge.

According to Rabbi Halberstam, however, Rav Elazar ben Arach’s “colleagues knew full well that, in truth, he had performed prior mitzvot with the requisite intentionality,� and as a result, “prayed for mercy on his behalf and his learning returned.�

This poignant episode underscores the great power and holiness of Rosh Chodesh, and its manifest significance in rabbinic thought. May the merit of our heartfelt observance of this mitzvah bring us bountiful blessings from Hashem and hasten the coming of the Mashiach soon and in our days.

Don’t compare the refugee ban to the Shoah Jeff Dunetz politics to go

resident Trump’s sweeping orders tightening refugee and visa policies — including suspending almost all refugee admissions for 90 days and indefinitely barring entry for some Syrians — is not especially unusual. President Obama refused to allow Iraqis into the country for six months in 2011, and in 1980 Jimmy Carter banned Iranians from entering the country.

Nevertheless, Trump foes are going crazy, saying the president created his order because he is Islamophobic. They’ve even come up with a ridiculous comparison: “Anne Frank was a refugee also.” Indeed, she was, but the reasons for Trump’s action were totally different from those that prevented Anne Frank and many like her from entering the United States.

Trump’s executive action is designed to prevent terrorists from coming into the U.S. It is temporary, to give Homeland Security time to evaluate and improve its vetting of

refugees from troublesome countries. On the other hand, FDR barred entry to refugees simple because they were Jewish and he thought America didn’t need any more Jews — and his ban was permanent.

In June 2016, CIA Director John Brennan said during congressional hearings that one of the ways terrorists infiltrate western nations is by embedding themselves within groups of refugees. In the case of the Holocaust, the Nazis weren’t embedding themselves with the Jewish refugees. It wasn’t even suspected. The Jewish refugees were kept out because FDR was a bigot; his hatred of Jews caused thousands to be added to the ranks of Hitler’s victims. n the book “FDR and the Holocaust: A Breach of Faith,” historian Rafael Medoff suggests that Roosevelt failed to take relatively simple measures that would have saved significant numbers of Jews during the Holocaust, because his vision for America was one that had a small number of Jews. In other words, FDR doomed many Jews to suffer, not because he wanted them to die, but because he didn’t want them as neighbors.

In a piece for the Brandeis Center, Medoff shared some of the anti-Semitic statements Roosevelt made when his guard was down.

In 1936, he characterized a tax maneuver by the publisher of the New York Times as “a dirty Jewish trick.” In 1938, he privately suggested to Stephen S. Wise, one of the era’s most prominent American Jewish leaders, that Jews in Poland were dominating the economy and were to blame for provoking anti-Semitism there. In 1939, Roosevelt expressed (to a U.S. senator) his pride that “there is no Jewish blood in our veins.” In 1940, he dismissed pleas for Jewish refugees as “Jewish wailing” and “sob stuff.”

The most detailed of FDR’s statements about Jews was made during his meeting on Jan. 17, 1943, in Casablanca, with leaders of the new local regime in Allied-liberated North Africa. U.S. ambassador Robert Murphy remarked that the 330,000 Jews in North Africa were “very much disappointed that ‘the war for liberation’ had not immediately resulted in their being given their complete freedom.” (Before the war, when the Jews lived under the colonial French regime, they enjoyed rights similar to French citizens. But when the pro-Nazi Vichy French took over the French colonies in 1940, the Jews were stripped o those rights. In 1943, upon the defeat of the Vichyites, the Jews See Shoah on page 23

The promise of Canada’s Ahmed Hussen Ben Cohen Viewpoint

H

e came to Canada as a 16-year-old refugee from Somalia. He’s highly regarded across the Canadian political spectrum. He was just appointed as immigration minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Now 40 years old, Ahmed Hussen has a promising career in front of him. And in these polarized, fragmented times, he is exactly the kind of public figure we need when it comes to clarifying the wider debate about immigration and Islamism, human rights and national security.

Trudeau, the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, has often been lampooned as a kumbaya do-gooder, devoted to his liberal conscience and slow-witted when it comes to recognizing that fanatics across the world

with views diametrically opposed to his are gaining strength and power. I will leave it to readers to judge whether any of that criticism is fair, but I will say that Trudeau’s appointment of Hussen shows a boldness that contrasts markedly with the approach of former President Barack Obama, despite their broadly similar worldview.

Obama, remember, regards the word “Islamist” as an insult rather than a descriptor. But Hussen has a record of actually tackling Islamism in his own community, engaging in the kind of political fight that Obama would most likely have dismissed as a sop to the radical, nationalist right.

Writing in the Toronto Sun, columnist Tarek Fatah, a close friend of Hussen’s— ”though we disagree on much,” he noted— related the time the two first encountered

each other. In 2004, Muslim activists in Ontario launched a campaign for the introduction of Islamic sharia law in the province’s family courts, arguing formally that they simply wanted the same rights that were granted to the Catholic and Jewish communities under legislation passed in 1991.

As Fatah tells it, Ahmed Hussen played a diligent, behind-the-scenes role in this episode. Newly minted as a Liberal Party staffer, he introduced the secularists to prominent Ontario politicians, allowing them to present their case directly.

The importance of having someone like Hussen countering Islamist encroachment among Muslim communities in the West cannot be overstated. As a child, he had seen firsthand the horrors of the conflict in Somalia, which triggered an Islamist surge in that country nearly a decade before the 9/11 atrocities. In Canada, he became a community activist, helping to secure $500 million in funds to revitalize the community in which he lived in Toronto. Moving into immigration law was perhaps the natural next step for him to take.

Now that he’s in Trudeau’s cabinet, Hussen is well-positioned to drive home a key message that is increasingly being lost in the global agonizing over national security, par-

ticularly in America. Simply put: Islamism and Islam are distinctive concepts.

“Distinctive” does not mean, of course, that they are entirely separate. The imperative of waging jihad in order to impose the rule of shari’a law did not suddenly appear out of nowhere; rather, that struggle is grounded upon authentic Islamic texts, Islamic laws and Islamic traditions. The argument over whether Islamic radicalism is a distortion of Muslim teachings (a default position held by politicians as diverse as George W. Bush, Tony Blair and Barack Obama) or a faithful reflection of them (as argued by nationalists in America and Europe) will continue to rage.

My own perspective, based on nearly two decades of observing Islamists and their fellow travelers in the West, is that a sledgehammer approach to the more fundamental issue of Muslim integration may play well politically in the short term, but is highly destructive in the long term. obody could seriously argue that Islam is a united body, after all. It is more accurately understood as a culture in the grip of a brutal civil war—between Shi’a and Sunni, between secular authoritarians and radical clerics, between competing jihadi schools—that is simultaneously linked, ideologically and operationally, to monstrous acts of terrorism against non-Muslims inside and outside the Muslim world. There were plenty of warnings before the 9/11 attacks that this trend was growing, such as the 1994 Iranian-sponsored bombing of the AMIA Jewish center in Buenos Aires, but Western politicians by and large ignored or misunderstood where this tide was heading.

If we are to avoid repeating these same errors, we need to learn from the past by understanding that Islam’s internal fissures can work to our advantage. But there is nothing to be gained from a situation in which the very word “refugee” becomes a pejorative,

as is more and more the case in America, or when we face legislative proposals that could, for example, prevent Kurdish Muslims from Iraq and Syria—traditionally our close allies—from entering our country.

In that sense, we can learn much from people like Ahmed Hussen about the importance of nuance and compassion. As a former refugee, he instinctively understands the plight of those driven from their homes by war and genocide. As a human rights advocate, he grasps that some groups are far more vulnerable than others—which is why he just announced that Canada will allow entry to an unspecified number of Yazidis from Iraq, who have been horribly persecuted by Islamic State, within the next four weeks.

At the same time, Hussen’s record suggests that he recognizes the clear difference between practical support for the victims of extreme cruelty on the one hand, and sinking into nebulous cultural relativism or knuckleheaded bigotry on the other. Partisans of both left and right would do well to consider that.

As president, Trump goes slow on Israel policy Analysis by Ron Kampeas, JTA WASHINGTON — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Donald Trump have been talking each other up plenty since the latter’s election upset in November. But those expecting Trump to turn his kind words and pledges on Israel into fast action may have to be patient.

The starkest example of Trump walking back concrete promises is his retreat from what he had indicated during the transition period would be an accelerated push to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.

Asked Thursday on the Fox News Channel about whether he would move the embassy, Trump was notably — and newly — reticent.

“I don’t want to talk about it yet,” the president told Sean Hannity. “It’s too early.”

Trump had been unequivocal about the embassy move since he first made the pledge to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee last March. And leading up to the Jan. 20 inauguration, Trump’s spokesman, Sean Spicer, said to “stay tuned” for an announcement, and Trump assured an Israeli reporter he would make good on his vow.

It makes sense for Trump and Netanyahu to retreat from the certainties that characterized the transition because what Trump says as president, with executive powers, carries greater weight than what he said as president-elect, said Aaron David Miller, a Middle East peace negotiator under Republican and Democratic presidents.

Trump also has yet to pronounce on how he will treat the Iran nuclear deal, which he called “terrible” on the campaign trail and which Netanyahu still hopes to scuttle.

Netanyahu announced new settlement expansions in the West Bank and building in eastern Jerusalem this week — but partly as a means to stave off pressure from right-wingers in his government who see Trump’s friendliness as license to go much further and even annex portions of the West Bank. Just as Jerusalem embassy talk has been dialed down, Spicer made it clear he also doesn’t want to talk about settlement expansion.

“He wants to have a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu and we’ll discuss that” was all Spicer would say on Tuesday at his daily briefing for reporters when asked about the settlement announcements. Trump’s team did not, however, criticize the expansion announcement as “unhelpful” or “disappointing,” as the Obama administration often did.

In at least one respect, Netanyahu lacks an advantage he had during his fraught relationship with President Barack Obama, when to resist pressure from his right to expand settlements or alter the status quo, he would routinely warn against further antagonizing the Obama administration.

concerns or constraints from the American government as a way to respond to pressure from his right wing and to say ‘I’d love to accommodate you on settlements but the Americans have asked me not to’,” said Tamara Cofman Wittes, a top State Department Middle East official in Obama’s first term. “He can’t play that game.”

Trump and Netanyahu are scheduled to meet here next month, and the best outcome for Netanyahu might be specific agreements on what Israel can do absent a peace process, similar to the “natural growth” in settlement that President George W. Bush agreed to for a period after 2004.

American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris said Netanyahu needs to tread extra lightly while the Trump administration finds its feet.

“Optics are important in politics, and the optics of Israel’s announced settlement construction, so shortly after President Trump took office, are not helpful,” he said in an email. “Yes, the construction may be in those areas Israel intends to keep in any possible deal with the Palestinians. And yes, the Trump administration may (or may not) end up taking a different approach to this issue than its predecessor. Nonetheless, Israel is taking a gamble that this step won’t further inflame an already difficult situation on the ground and internationally.”

To be sure, the Trump-Netanyahu mutual admiration society continues apace.

“Congrats to my friend President Trump,” Netanyahu said on Twitter Jan. 20, three hours before Trump was actually in-

augurated. “Look fwd to working closely with you to make the alliance between Israel&USA stronger than ever.”

Marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day last week, Netanyahu made it clear he felt safer with Trump at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. than he did with Obama, particularly regarding Iran.

After saying there was a “deafening silence” worldwide to the threat Iran poses to Israel, Netanyahu added, “I believe it will change. Because I spoke a few days ago to President Trump and he spoke about the Iranian aggression. He spoke about Iran’s commitment to destroy Israel. He spoke about the nature of this nuclear agreement and the danger it poses. We spoke about it together.”

On Fox News, President Trump told Hannity on Thursday that the relationship was repaired.

“It got repaired as soon as I took the oath of office,” he said.

The White House, describing the first post-inauguration phone call between the leaders, said “the president affirmed his unprecedented commitment to Israel’s security.”

As candidate, then nominee, then president-elect, Trump was able to have it all: He boasted that his skills as a negotiator could bring about the Israeli-Palestinian peace deal that has eluded others, while also signaling that he would be friendlier to Netanyahu and Israel’s right wing than any of his predecessors. Now that he’s on the job, those postures might not be so easy to reconcile.

“The Trump administration faces a stark choice,” said Cofman Wittes, who now leads the Brookings Institution’s Center for Middle East Policy. “Whether to accede to the preferences to constituencies that supported them in the election — the evangelicals and right-wing Jews — and to demonstrate full-throated support for policy preferences of the Israeli right [and] to support actions that would set aside the two-state solution,” she said.

“The other option is to do what [Trump] has said is the ultimate deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians. He can’t have it both ways.”

“A third option would be a more ambiguous expression of concern that would clearly send a signal it isn’t business as usual when it comes to the settlement activity, [but] that we don’t find unilateral actions helpful,” Miller said.

Jonathan Schanzer, vice president of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said it was clear that Trump would substantively reverse the Obama administration policy of speaking out when there were differences on Israel. He saw a return to the behind-closed-doors policy of the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations.

“I wouldn’t expect a significant response if the Trump administration is concerned or even angered by this move,” he said, referring to the settlement announcements. “I would expect conversations to take place quietly, a return to status quo ante.”

Cohn, the outgoing president and chief operating officer at Goldman Sachs, heads the White House National Economic Council. At Goldman Sachs, where he had worked since 1990, Cohn answered to CEO Lloyd Blankfein and was considered a strong candidate to lead the bank.

The 56-year-old father of three has a reputation for abrasiveness, but also for getting things done, according to a Wall Street Journal profile last year. In a 2014 New York Times op-ed, Goldman Sachs executive Greg Smith wrote on the day he resigned that Blankfein and Cohn were responsible for a “decline in the firm’s moral fiber” that placed its interests above those of its clients.

Cohn, a Cleveland native, in 2009 funded the Cohn Jewish Student Center at Kent State University named for his parents.

Success wasn’t always obvious for Cohn, whose struggle with dyslexia made school difficult for him. But the Goldman Sachs banker, who was featured in a book on underdogs by writer Malcolm Gladwell, told

the author that his learning disability also taught him how to deal with failure and that “I wouldn’t be where I am today without my dyslexia.”

Boris Epshteyn

Epshteyn, a Republican political strategist who appeared as a Trump surrogate on TV, is working as a special assistant to the president. Epshteyn, who is in his mid-30s, also is serving as assistant communications director for surrogate operations.

A New York-based investment banker and finance attorney, Epshteyn was a communications aide for Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008, focusing his efforts on the Arizona senator’s running mate, thenAlaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

He defended Trump on major TV networks over 100 times, according to The New York Times. TV hosts have described Epshteyn, who moved to the United States from his native Moscow in 1993, as “very combative” and “abrasive.” In 2014, he was charged with misdemeanor assault after being involved in a bar tussle. The charge was dropped after Epshteyn agreed to undergo anger management training and perform community service.

David Shulkin

Dr. David Shulkin, the undersecretary for health at the Department of Veterans Affairs, will lead the department as secretary under

Trump if confirmed by the Senate. He would be the first holdover appointment from the Obama administration, in which he served since 2015.

Shulkin, 57, is an internist who has had several chief executive roles, including as president of hospitals, notably Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. He also has held numerous physician leadership roles, including as chief medical officer for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and academic positions, including as chairman of medicine and vice dean at the Drexel University School of Medicine.

As an entrepreneur, Shulkin founded and served as the chairman and CEO of DoctorQuality, one of the first consumer-oriented sources of information for quality and safety in health care.

Reed Cordish

Trump chose Cordish, who is friends with his son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as assistant to the president for intragovernmental and technology initiatives. He will be responsible for initiatives requiring multi-agency collaboration and also focus on technological innovation and modernization.

Cordish is a partner at his family’s real estate and entertainment firm, the Baltimorebased Cordish Companies. Cordish’s father, David, the chairman and CEO of Cordish Companies and an AIPAC board member, is a

friend of Trump. The two met during the mediation process of a lawsuit in which Trump sued Cordish Companies.

And Cordish, who is in his early 40s, has another connection to the Trump family — he was introduced to his now-wife Margaret

by Ivanka Trump, who attended the couple’s wedding in 2010 with husband Jared Kushner. Cordish and his wife were listed as cohosts for a Manhattan fundraiser for Trump’s presidential campaign in October, Jewish Insider reported.

Avrahm Berkowitz

Berkowitz, 27, is serving as special assistant to Trump and assistant to Jared Kushner.

Berkowitz and Kushner met on the basketball court of an Arizona hotel during a Passover program, Jewish Insider reported. The two stayed in touch and Berkowitz went on to work with Kushner in several capacities.

After graduating from Queens College, Berkowitz worked for Kushner Companies and later went on to write for Kushner’s paper, the New York Observer. In 2016 Berkowitz, who was then finishing up his last semester at Harvard Law School, directed a Facebook Live talk show for the Trump campaign. Later he worked on the presidential campaign as assistant director of data analytics.

Berkowitz’s first cousin is Howard Friedman, who served as AIPAC president in 2006-2010, according to Jewish Insider.

Anti-Semites back Socialist winner in France

By JTA A left-wing politician in France who was endorsed by the founders of the country’s AntiZionist Party handily defeated Prime Minister Manuel Valls in the Socialist presidential primaries.

Benoit Hamon, who called for his party to support Palestinian causes to increase its appeal to Muslim voters, beat his hard-line challenger Sunday with 58 percent of the vote in the second and final round of the balloting.

Last week, the comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala and the far-right author Alain Soral — who along with founding the Anti-Zionist Party both have multiple convictions for Holocaust denial and inciting racial hatred against Jews —endorsed Hamon publicly. Hamon disavowed Soral and Dieudonne.

Soral wrote on his website that voting for Hamon was necessary to “knock Valls out of the race” because he is “a candidate who swore allegiance to the CRIF and to Israel be it through policy, media exposure, judicial means or by deploying the police.” CRIF is the umbrella group of French Jewish communities.

Soral and Dieudonne cited Valls’ commitment to defending Jews against anti-Semitic violence. Valls is married to Anne Gravoin, a Jewish musician. In 2011 he said his marriage connected him “in an eternal way” to Israel and the Jewish people. He is also the only French prime minister who has said publicly that antiZionism is a form of anti-Semitism.

Hamon will contend in the presidential elections in May against the hard-line candidate Francois Fillon of The Republicans party of former President Nicolas Sarkozy, the farright candidate Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron, a centrist independent.

The Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders (pictured in Koblenz, Germany, on Jan. 21) on Sunday called critics of President Trump’s executive order on refugees “hypocrites” for failing to protest against Muslim countries that ban Israeli passport holders. Wilders, whose Party for Freedom has been leading in polls ahead of March general elections, lived for two years on an Israeli moshav in the Jordan Valley and called Israel “a place where I feel home” and said it was “close to his heart.” He also has called Israel a “canary in the coal mine” and “the West’s first line of defense against Islam” during his many visits there. Mexico summoned Israel’s ambassador for a meeting with its foreign minister over a tweet

by Prime Minister Netanyahu seen as supporting President Trump’s plan to build a wall at the Mexico border to keep out illegal immigrants.

On Monday, Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray called on Netanyahu to apologize for the tweet.

“We hope that the Israeli government will have the sensitivity to correct Netanyahu’s statement,” said Videgaray.

The summons, which the Foreign Ministry of Israel on Monday called an invitation, comes a day after Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “The Foreign Ministry expressed to the government of Israel, via its ambassador in Mexico, its profound astonishment, rejection and disappointment over Prime Minister Netanyahu’s message on Twitter about the construction of a border wall. Mexico is a friend of Israel and should be treated as such by its Prime Minister.”

On Saturday morning, Netanyahu said on Twitter that “President Trump is right.”

“I built a wall along Israel’s southern border. It stopped all illegal immigration. Great success. Great idea,” Netanyahu said in a tweet.

Starbucks to hire refugees Howard Schultz, the Jewish billionaire CEO of Starbucks, said his company plans to hire 10,000 refugees over five years, in a letter to employees addressing President Trump’s executive order temporarily banning refugees from entering the United States.

“I can assure you that our Partner Resources team has been in direct contact with the partners who are impacted by this immigration ban, and we are doing everything possible to support and help them to navigate through this confusing period,” Schultz said in a message titled “Living Our Values in Uncertain Times.”

He wrote that the “conscience of our country, and the promise of the American Dream” are being called into question.

A list of the names of Nazi SS commanders and guards who served at the Auschwitz concentration camp was published online.

The list, believed to be the most complete ever, went online Monday. It was prepared by the Polish Institute of National Remembrance in cooperation with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.

The database also provides the SS staff members’ personal data, including date and place of birth, service number, date of arrival to and departure from the camp, education and citizenship. Photographs of some of the SS officers are shown and, in the case of those who were tried in courts after the war, their court records.

Piotr Cywinski, director of the Auschwitz museum, said the database “is the result of a several-generations-long investigation started immediately after the war by the commissions prosecuting criminals, and then continued in the Auschwitz Museum. The Germans before escaping the camp exported and burned the camp administration records. They destroyed most of the documents.”

Jaroslaw Szarek, director of the Institute of National Remembrance, said this “is the beginning of a large project We start with Auschwitz, but we are planning to expand this list also to other German Nazi concentration camps.”

In 1941, the SS garrison in Auschwitz had about 700 members. By January 1945, in connection with the final evacuation of Auschwitz, there were 4,480 SS members and 71 SS female overseers.

Brazil Shoah service Brazilian President Michel Temer attended a service at the country’s largest synagogue to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The president was invited during Sunday’s service at the Congregacao Israelita Paulista in Sao Paulo to light one of six candles in honor of the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

“Remembering the Holocaust in all its pain and anguish is preparing the future,” Temer said. “It stands to all of us as a lesson. One day may pass, one month may pass, years may pass, centuries may pass, we must remember the Holocaust for it’s a lesson for the future and for the present time.”

Brazil is home to some 120,000 Jews, half living in Sao Paulo. In 2016, some 700 Brazilians made aliyah to Israel, more than three times the annual average of about 200 new Brazilian immigrants and a 45-year record for the South American country.

Stanford swastikas

Swastikas were discovered last weekend at Stanford University for the second time in less than a month.

At the end of December, during the university’s winter break, swastikas with inverted arms were drawn on campus buildings and signs and on buildings in Palo Alto, where the university is located, accompanied by phrases such as “No Jews allowed,” the Mercury News reported.

Stanford Police Chief Laura Wilson said in a statement issued in early January. “However, due to the similarity of the symbols to a swastika and the perception by witnesses that the symbols were intended to represent an object commonly associated with hate-based violence, the police are investigating the vandalism as a possible hate crime.”
