Voters weigh HALB’s No. 6 deal

By Jeffrey Bessen The Lawrence School District and the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach (HALB) have finalized contract negotiations concerning the sale of the Number Six School in Woodmere.

Pending a public referendum that is scheduled for March 31, HALB will purchase the 6.67-acre site on Church Avenue that includes a 80,170-squarefoot school building for $8.5 million in cash. An additional $2.7 million will be held by the district as a guarantee that Lawrence will realize more than $565,000 in annual savings on what the district now spends on transportation and special education for

HALB students.

HALB plans to shift 800 elementary school students from Long Beach to the Number Six School after it receives approval from the Town of Hempstead to renovate the building and the work is complete. HALB Board President Lance Hirt said should the referendum be approved, he anticipates opening the new school in two years.

“This purchase agreement is a winwin for the Woodmere-Five Towns community and for our students,” Hirt said. More than 90 percent of HALB’s incoming students live in the Five Towns area. In addition, HALB

Maloney has renewed her demand that Maryland’s Department of Transportation reject a bid from a French rail company that collaborated with the Nazis in World War II. Maryland’s Department of Transportation recently announced the selection of Keolis, a company that is majority-owned by Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF), to bid on a new Purple Line light rail project in Washington’s northern suburbs.

The line will connect to Metrorail at Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, and New Carrollton and to other lines.

SNCF collaborated with the Nazis to transfer more than 76,000 Jews and thousands of other “undesirables” to concentration camps, but has not provided any restitution to victims.

By Malka Eisenberg A Great Neck boy’s interest in sneakers forged a connection with his grandfather and led to a fundraising project that ties him to Israeli soldiers.

The family of 11-year-old Jared Puntus has been active in the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) since 2009. Since age seven, Jared has been drawn to “cool, interesting sneakers,” explained his father, Marc, an investment banker. “Most he wears, some he doesn’t wear as much,” Marc explained.

Jared’s grandfather — his mother Amy’s father, Herbert Weiner — was a shoe salesman who sold sneakers most of his life, a distributor of shoes and sneakers to small stores throughout the tristate region. Marc said that Weiner, who passed away last year, was a very religious man and a strong supporter of Israel, and that Jared was close to him. The sneaker interest, Marc said, “was something they had in common — he got a kick out of Jared and his interest in sneakers. It was a bonding experience. They used to like talking about sneakers.”

Liron Kreitman, director of Long Island FIDF, said that someone Jared’s age “being involved such a long time is very unusual.”

She noted that other children get involved in FIDF as part of a mitzvah program around age 12 and 13. “He started younger. I think it’s incredible.

to defend the Jewish people,” Kreitman said.

“That he gets that is very impressive. It’s a very special story.”

She said that Jared raised $1,069 in 2009 for the young soldiers’ program, and that “I actually remember Jared bringing the money he raised to me in cash. You don’t see that ever.”

Jared began collecting sneakers and would trade them with friends, amassing more than 100 pairs. He developed an eBay site called JPkicks, selling mostly sneakers that he has outgrown. He found out online about sneaker conventions and at Sneakercon last year he rented a table and sat there for seven hours with a friend selling sneak-

ers. Marc noted that these venues are mostly for adults or children with “big” feet and that Jared was one of very few selling “kids sneakers and certainly the only kid selling sneakers.” Jared sold 16 pairs of sneakers there and continues to sell his sneakers online.

Jared has committed to donate the proceeds of what he sells online to FIDF, and has committed to donate a minimum of $1,000.

“We are big supporters of FIDF,” Marc explained. “We’re not the most religious family but Israel is important to us. The FIDF has a direct impact on the soldiers. With most charities you can’t touch it or feel it — we get to speak with the soldiers and see where the money goes.”

Marc said he, Jared and Alexandra have never been to Israel, although wife and mom Amy has been there many times. They are planning to go either this summer for a friend’s bat mitzvah or next year for Jared’s bar mitzvah.

Marc sees Jared’s hobby as a way to learn business, knowing the prices paid for the sneakers, their value, how to negotiate prices, what to buy, what’s rare and when they will be issued. “It’s an interesting skill set growing up in Great Neck not found at this age. It’s an interesting hobby that will help him develop business, math and negotiating skills.”

Jared is a student at South Middle School.

His family are members of the Lake Success Jewish Center where he attends Sunday school.

YI Woodmere series showcases favorite seforim

By Malka Eisenberg Putting the unity in community, five different Torah educators, each from a different Five Towns yeshiva, are presenting their own favorite sefer in a one hour class on five consecutive Wednesday evenings at the Young Israel of Woodmere.

The series, “My Favorite Sefer,” part of the Young Israel of Woodmere’s adult education initiative, began Feb. 5, with Rabbi Moshe Hubner of HAFTR High School discussing the Minchat Chinuch by Rabbeinu Yosef Babad, who is a distant relative of Rabbi Hubner.

More than 30 people came to the Leon Mayer Beit Midrash “on a very cold night — there was a lot of interaction with questions during the talk,” said Eli Dworetsky a member of the adult education committee and one of the principal organizers of the series.

A dozen or so of Rabbi’s Hubner’s HAFTR students attended as well.

People should not stop learning after they graduate, from a limudei kodesh point of view, Dworetsky told The Jewish Star.

“It’s a Cliff’s Notes version of these five favorite seforim — one hour a week you get a view of an important sefer, you get the flavor of the book and can learn more.”

Dworetsky said that “another nice thing about it is that a local educator is teaching and the younger adults from the school can come to support them [as did the] kids from HAFTR who came to show respect and to learn from Rav Hubner.”

The books chosen cover Jewish philosophy, Jewish law, and Tanach (scriptures).

Two of the educators are local roshei yeshiva, Rabbi Zev Friedman of Rambam (Feb. 12) and Rabbi Mordechai Yaffe of Mesivta Ateres Yaakov (March 5).

Mrs. Leah Feinberg, Tanach Department Chair at SKA High School for girls, will be speaking about the Malbim on Tanach (Feb. 26) and DRS High School for boys Rebbe Yehudah Balsam will present Sefer Tomer Devora by Rav Moshe Cordevero (Feb. 19).

Rabbi Yaffe will close the series with a discussion of Mesilat Yesharim by Rav Moshe Chaim Luzatto on March 5.

The lectures will be available on the Young Israel of Woodmere website.

The idea for the series came from other programs with multiple speakers, and was presented to the local schools to enable them to showcase their educators, Dworetsky said.

“Everyone we spoke with said that it was a great idea. People don’t have time to learn a whole sefer. Here, they get a taste of it.”

Dworetsky commended Rabbi Shalom Axelrod, assistant rabbi at YIW, who worked with him and David Weber on this program.

He said if someone has an idea, Rabbi Axelrod is very receptive and that he is an activist rabbi interested in promoting learning. Rabbi Axelrod pointed out that the YIW is hosting 19 special programs during February.

“People are looking for new learning opportunities,” said Rabbi Friedman, “and if they taste part of the shiur and like that sefer, hopefully they will have more opportunities to do more learning.” He was scheduled to present Yad Hachazaka by the Rambam.

“It’s the code of Jewish law, [giving] readers a glimpse of the Rambam’s analysis of the Talmud,” he said. “Hopefully it will inspire people to learn more. I’m happy to do it.”

Rabbi Friedman said that the YIW had a dial in shiur initiative a few years ago where various people gave a shiur for adult education and that he and other rabbanim participated. He said that many called during their spare time and during their lunch break.

Rabbi Friedman said that he also gives a “big yashar koach to Rabbis Billet, Glatt and Axelrod, to Eli Dworetsky and all those involved for the hard work to promote the program and hopefully increase Torah and Mitzvot in the entire community.”

Calf vs. cherubs: What we want is who we really are T

his week’s portion, Ki Tissah, contains one of the most challenging episodes in the entire Torah. Just six weeks after hearing G-d’s words directly at Sinai, the Jews construct for themselves a golden calf calling out, “These are your gods oh Israel!”

How could a nation that witnessed Rabbi Binny the splitting of the Freedman sea, the great miracles of the Exodus, and that stood at Sinai, make such a horrendous mistake?

Even more confusing, is that this story appears in the context of the fulfillment of G-d’s command to build a Tabernacle (the forerunner of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem) in whose holy of holies we were commanded to fashion and place no less than holy cherubs, made of gold! Why was the fashioning of a golden calf considered such a tragic mistake, while the golden cherubs were considered the holiest of holies?

Clearly the gold was not the issue; the Temple itself was full of gold. So what is the difference between golden cherubs, and a golden calf?

To understand this, we need to take a closer look at the mistake that has come to be known as “The sin of the golden calf.”

What really happened at the foot of Sinai?

“Vayar ha’am ki boshesh Moshe” (“And the people saw that Moshe tarried”).

Rashi here explains that Moshe went up on the mountain for forty days, and the people miscounted. When the 40th day arrived and Moshe did not materialize, they assumed he was gone, and the resulting events were born of their despair and need for something to fill the vacuum that resulted. But why a golden calf?

The calf elsewhere in the Torah is the animal chosen very specifically for certain sacrifices. The Ramban suggests that the essence of the sacrifices was to somehow bring us closer to G-d; indeed the Hebrew word for sacrifice — Korban — comes from the same root as the word Karov, meaning to be close. Many commentaries suggest that when offering a sacrifice one is meant to feel “there but for the grace of G-d go I,” that the animal represents oneself in its primal form. When we succumb to our most base desires and needs allowing our lives to take the wrong direction, the sacrifice reminds us that our life needs to be re-directed. The calf then represents the animal in its youthful, raw form, where all that matters is what we want and desire.

From a theological existential standpoint however, the mistake of the golden calf is not so simple. If indeed, the sin occurred because the Jewish people miscounted how

long Moshe was meant to be away, and felt lost and abandoned in the middle of the desert, whose fault was that, really?

Why were the Jewish people still in the desert? Why did they not travel due North from Egypt instead of heading almost due east towards the Red Sea? The Torah tells us (beginning of the portion of Beshalach) that Hashem does not take them straight into the land of Israel lest they encounter the warlike Philistines and decide they want to head back to Egypt! Instead, G-d takes them all the way around where they encounter the entire Egyptian army at the Red sea! And when they do finally get to Sinai, why does G-d need 40 days to give Moshe the Torah — why not just give it to him in an hour? Can’t the G-d who splits seas manage a little time continuum?

If the Jews had gone straight into Israel and received the Torah in an afternoon there would never have been a golden calf debacle!

And to take this to its existential end point, if G-d created the world and it is all part of His great plan, then everything that happens is meant to happen, right? And Jewish tradition suggests that the Torah is a Divine communication from G-d and as such represents the word, and even the will, of G-d; so whatever is in the Torah was always meant to be, because G-d knew it

would be. (It is hard to theologically defend the position that G-d does not know what will happen.) So, as an example, the generation of Jews that left Egypt was never meant to enter the land of Israel, which is why they didn’t! How do I know this? Because that is what happened!

One might suggest that before something happens we have to assume it is all up to us, and to do our bit, but once it has happened we can look back and assume it was meant to be, precisely because it happened. So the Jews were always meant to make the mistake of the golden calf at the foot of Sinai, which is why it happened! And it was always part of the Torah and thus was always meant to be.

Of course, this begs the obvious question: What then was the sin of the Jewish people? n truth, Judaism does not believe in the concept of sin; in Hebrew the word is chet, which really means a mistake. What then, was the mistake of the Jewish people? It was not that they actually fashioned a golden calf, it was that they wanted to.

The Talmud tells us, “hakol bi’yedei shamayim chutz mi’yirat shamayim” (“all is in the hands of heaven except for the awe of heaven”).

What we do was always meant to be; our freedom of choice is in what we want to do.

Thus, if I can change what I want, I change who I am.

This does not mean changing what we want undoes the mistakes of the past, nor that we are meant to accept the consequencContinued on page 7

Doing it exactly right because that is what G-d intended A

fter Moshe breaks the first Luchot (Tablets), he is graced with a unique aura that raises his status in the eyes of the people. First he is forced to take his tent some distance outside of the camp (2000 cubits — see Targum Yonatan) because G-d’s presence leaves from amongst the people (33:7-11).

At the end of the Rabbi Avi Billet parsha, when he descends with the second set of Luchot (34:2935) his face is shining to the point that no one can look at him. He must wear a mask for people to be in his presence because they cannot perceive his face, a face which has seen the Divine.

Beyond an effort to seek and provide a neutral ground for the devout who honestly seek the presence of G-d (Targum Yonatan and others), what is the significance of Moshe’s tent, which is now called an Ohel Moed (Tent of Meeting)? Did the original storage of the Luchot (broken and replacement) contribute to the formulation of this Ohel Moed? Did this episode redefine, in any way, the purpose of the Mishkan?

The episode indicates that Moshe’s tent was a spiritual center, a place of inspiration, where a cloud descended to demonstrate the presence of the Divine that was no longer entering the camp (Ramban). That Moshe conversed with the Divine “face to face” and that Yehoshua never left the tent, indicates that these leaders are uniquely endowed spiritually, and that their “hangout” is a preview of the PARSHA OF THE WEEK

Mishkan that will soon be built. More than a preview, perhaps it is actually the Mishkan 1.0 (see Ibn Ezra HaArokh), while the model that will be made by Betzalel will be Mishkan 2.0.

That Moshe’s tent became the first Mishkan could be inferred from Moshe’s depiction of what happened to the Luchot after he brought them down from the mountain (Devarim 10:15). He explains he had been instructed to make an ark out of wood and to place the Luchot in them.

Where was this ark stored?

Most likely it was stored in Moshe’s tent. So if the cloud descended on the tent, Moshe communicated with G-d, and the Ark with its Luchot was there, Moshe’s tent now seems to be a functioning Mishkan.

(See Shmot 25:22, Bamidbar 7:89, Shmot 24:15-18 and Shmot 40:31). ost of the commentaries agree that the ark in this discussion was a different ark from the one that would eventually adorn the mishkan. This is especially true, as Rashi in Devarim 10:1 points out, because work on Betzalel’s Mishkan only began after Yom Kippur (when Moshe came down with Luchot II), and the Mishkan parts themselves, the actual physical structure of the building, were constructed before the golden Ark was made. In other words, a short-term storage solution for the Luchot was necessary until the Mishkan could be finalized.

Enter the ark mentioned in Devarim 10 that was unique because it was made only of wood, without gold. And while Ramban

in Devarim 10:1 indicates it had a cover, he also posits that this ark was made only for the second Luchot. The first Luchot never had a box made directly for them because they were not meant to last – G-d “knew all along” that they would be broken. Furthermore, assuming for a moment that the first Luchot were not supposed to break, they would still not need a box to store them, as they can be credited with storing themselves (Or haChaim).

The fate of Moshe’s Ark seemed to be that it was buried some time after the Mishkan’s ark was created to replace it, to hold the Luchot and the broken Luchot. There is a debate as to whether it was taken out to war, or if it was captured during the time of Eli the High Priest.

But it was not meant to be a long-lasting solution. It was never meant to be more than a temporary solution, a short-term storage box for Gd’s gift to the Israelites, the gift of the Luchot.

We can make the argument that the postGolden Calf era was so tainted by the Golden Calf episode, to the point that the original Mishkan commandments became obsolete.

Maybe Moshe’s moving his tent, which became the interim Mishkan, outside the camp, symbolically indicated G-d’s disappointment and the need for the people to see that spirituality in a vacuum. When defined by the feelings of the people and not by what G-d intended, this can only lead to a spiritual center in which everything but the rawest basics needs to be stripped away and removed lest people

Our task is to look to His book as a guide and to do our best, with unbridled sincerity untainted by agenda-driven practices, to get close to Him.

think that the gold and the vestments and the animals are what service of G-d is all about.

Service of G-d can be achieved through the most simple of methods, without show and fanfare, when we understand that “All who sought G-d could go out to the Tent of Meeting that was outside of the camp” (33:7).

Service of G-d, in its basic form, is never about bells and whistles and all the trimmings of religious political activism. It is about me having a relationship with The Creator, or about you having a relationship with The Creator. It is about creating a home where the broken Luchot and the replacement Luchot share a space, even a simple wooden box unadorned by any precious metals, because both covenants – as represented by each set of Luchot – speak to G-d’s changing patience and to the frailties of humans who may mistakenly think they know what G-d wants and what is the best way to serve Him. Our task is to look to His book as a guide and to do our best, with unbridled sincerity, untainted by agenda-driven practices, to get close to Him. Because if it doesn’t pass the simple smell-test of historical genuineness, it might be an aberration as damaging as the Golden Calf, which set the people back to the basics of Mishkan building so they could understand that all the gold, silver and copper was meaningless in the service of G-d if the people using it were misguided in how to properly use the precious materials in the service of The Creator.

Betzalel’s Mishkan was then constructed with one phrase repeated over and over: with everything being made and done (and therefore utilized) “Exactly as G-d had commanded Moshe.” Not changing anything because the times demanded it. But doing it exactly right because that is what G-d intended.

Among others, he learned under Rabbi Raphael Reichman, and Rabbi Ephraim Kirschenbaum, the rabbi of Beit Knesset Pnei Shmuel in Ramat Beit Shemesh, and the Rosh Kollel of Aish HaTorah’s Kollel L’Horaah.

In addition to his rabbinic training, Rabbi Walter earned a Bachelor’s degree in Jewish History from Yeshiva College and a masters degree in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School.

Aside from his rabbinic duties, Rabbi Walter learns at the Yeshiva of Greater Washington under its Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Aharon Lopiansky, a native of New York’s Lower East Side.

Among the growing list of his written works are, to date, four papers in the Journal of Halacha and Contemporary Society. They are: â€˘â€œCoffee, Pizza and Hard Cheese: Eating Meat After Dairy,â€? Lastly, Rabbi Walter is currently the founder, editor and regular contributor to the Halacha Bulletin of the Vaad HaRabbanim of Greater Washington, a compendium dedicated to halachic inquiries of a contemporary nature relating to the chagim [Jewish holidays].

ducation seems to be a constant theme running through every issue of The Jewish Star. We cover initiatives in education, what to teach, how to teach it, the importance of learning Torah, the importance of speaking with Holocaust survivors, and the importance of learning from our past.

Malka Eisenberg We focused on people who are eagerly preparing to finish the entire Shas in one day, people who gathered in Israel for four days of intensive study and programs throughout the Five Towns and Far Rockaway to make Torah available to the community. This past Sunday the Young Israel of Woodmere presented an intensive day of learning, tying women’s health and Jewish law and the same shul will be continuing with a new series that unites the community by providing five different yeshiva educators a forum to teach a shiur on a favorite book.

We are at a precarious juncture now, with Israel and thus the Jews, being squeezed from all sides and it seems as if we are again standing between the Egyptians and the sea, Iran FROM THE EDITOR

and a hard place. We know we have to remain firm, hold to our convictions and know that we have to protect the Jewish people, Israel, the Torah and our cause is just. story I covered seems to oddly resonate on many levels: a boy has connected with a sneaker collecting hobby to his grandfather, who passed away last year, and to the young Israeli soldiers, donating money from the sale of his collection to FIDF. Sneakers, shoes. In my mind I see a cosmic healing through his hobby, his grandfather sold shoes and sneakers, the piles of Holocaust victims’ shoes at Auschwitz, and the story of the Assarah Harugai Malchut, who were confronted with a room full of shoes, the sale of Yosef by his brothers for the cost of a pair of shoes. Could this be a tikun, a tie through the generations?

Jared connected to his grandfather and to Israel and the young soldiers through sneakers. May we all find a way to learn, grow and connect and create ties to our ancestors, each other, the Jewish people everywhere, the Torah and G-d. We have to learn to value our G-d given Torah and that each Jew is the embodiment of Torah and must be helped to achieve as Rav Binny often says, “to be the best they can be.” And we must not let the deniers of Israel’s rights to shout us down.

Write letters, take a stand, defend Israel, learn Torah. Keep the continuity.

Heed Torah and shovel your walk!

To the editor, Why is it ok for homeowners on Broadway in Lawrence, Cedarhurst and Woodmere to ignore their responsibility to shovel the sidewalks in front of their homes? Time and again, days and days after a snowstorm, pedestrians must struggle to walk on the sidewalks, risking a fall on the ice and packed snow. Wheelchairs, strollers and the elderly and infirm have no chance of passage and even strong healthy walkers are endangered with each step taken.

Walkers are forced to walk in the street [where] there is no leeway since it is covered in snow and ice. In our towns we are forced to climb over small snow mountains to insert our quarters into parking meters risking a ticket for non-compliance, while the homeowners remain scot free as they endanger walkers.

In NYC, shovel-scoffers are issued fines ranging from $150 to $350. Here is an easy opportunity for our towns to collect funds by ticketing those who don’t remove snow from their walkways. I’m not talking about cul-desacs or small side streets which rarely even

I understand that we have some snowbirds in the area, but they must make the effort to have a neighbor or service take care of this critical responsibility. Today I noticed that private walkways and even driveways were cleared, while the path directly in front of the house was left an icy mess. I don’t think they would enjoy dealing with a lawsuit should someone G-d forbid hurt themselves badly on the hidden sidewalk.

We learn in the Torah that one must not put a stumbling block before a person.

Where is the respect due to our neighbors?

I’ve already slipped twice this winter while walking very mindfully and slowly and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Boycott or opportunity?

You can’t have both T

here is a smug sense of “I told you so” about the challenge that Israel faces from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Jeremy Ben-Ami, executive Director of J Street — a left-wing group which believes the best way to advocate for Israel is by opposing sanctions on Iran and castigating Israel’s democratically Ben Cohen, JNS elected government — is one example. Speaking to a Jewish audience in New Haven, Ben-Ami talked, and not for the first time, of Israel becoming a “pariah state,” punished for its West Bank policies by an international community increasingly persuaded that the way to create a Palestinian state is through willfully damaging the Israeli economy.

Ben-Ami’s media echo, the columnist Peter Beinart, took a similar tack in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. After praising the boycott movement for its “tactical brilliance” and for being “tactically shrewd” (OK, Peter, we understood you the first time), Beinart argued that the threat of international quarantine should, in a rational world, persuade U.S. Jewish organizations to actively oppose the growth of Jewish communities in the West Bank.

And then, in the New York Times, there was Thomas Friedman. A writer perpetually on the lookout for a new catchphrase, Friedman described the boycott movement as a “Third Intifada.” Observing that the Europeans are running out of patience, that idealistic activists are searching for a new political romance in the wake of Nelson Mandela’s passing, and that Secretary of State John Kerry is continually warning that Israel’s actions are grist to the boycotters’ mill, Friedman concluded that everything is stacking up in favor of the Israel-haters.

There was an air of glee in Friedman’s citation of Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid’s comment that the absence of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal would eventually “hit the pocket of every Israeli.” (Some readers will recall that quotes from Israeli leaders like Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert using the word “apartheid” were subjected to similar exploitation by liberal critics of Israel.) But Lapid wasn’t endorsing the boycott movement, and Friedman missed the most significant segment of his remark — “Israel won’t conduct its policy based on threats” — in order to hail Lapid’s recognition that the boycott needs to be taken seriously.

All this breathless admiration for the audacity of the boycott movement has, in fact, generated its own mythology. Read the likes of Beinart and Friedman and you could be forgiven for thinking that the boycott is a Middle Eastern equivalent of the U.S. civil rights movement, led by bold young activists seeking justice for all, rather than what it is: an outgrowth of the older League of Arab States boycott against Israel, companies doing business with Israel, and companies doing business VIEWPOINT

with companies doing business with Israel.

(Incidentally, when I say “older,” I really mean “older” — the Arab League boycott was instituted in 1945, when the smoke was still rising from the crematoria at Auschwitz, with Israel’s creation still three years away.)

If the idea that the boycott movement is a human rights project is one myth, then the contention that its goal is merely to end Israel’s presence in the West Bank is another.

Again, read Friedman and Beinart, and you’d think that the presence of anti-Semites and supporters of Israel’s elimination within the boycott movement was a minor irritant.

But that destroying Israel as a sovereign state is the primary goal the boycotters themselves have never hidden, as much as some naive American Jewish liberals wish they would adapt and sanitize their tactics by concentrating on the West Bank alone. If you don’t believe me, pay heed to Phil Weiss, editor of the anti-Semitic website Mondoweiss: “If BDS is such a powerful tactic that they can use to pressure Netanyahu for a two-state-solution … why shouldn’t Palestinians use the tactic to their ends? Why accept a deal for a fragment of the country you once lived in, negotiated by a collaborationist government?”

What, then, should those genuinely committed to securing a peaceful resolution between Israelis and Palestinians do, if they reject boycotting? I would suggest, at the outset, talking to the right people with the most creative ideas — people like Daniel Birnbaum, the CEO of SodaStream, who aced an interview with the BBC’s toughest interrogator, Jeremy Paxman, by pointing out that peace needs to be fueled with economic opportunities for both peoples, even if that means breaking with dogmatic slogans about the illegitimacy of Jewish settlements.

As Birnbaum argued, some of those opportunities might eventually sustain a Palestinian state. But if we unthinkingly buy into the propaganda of the boycotters, there won’t be any opportunities to begin with.

Calf vs. cherubs...

Continued from page 4 es of our past actions, but it does mean that guilt becomes a complete waste of time.

Imagine a person has gone through a painful divorce, and he carries with him the guilt of whether he made a mistake ever marrying the woman he divorced, or perhaps of not working harder to make the marriage work. In the end, he was meant to meet and marry that person, and their souls were meant to be with each other, learn from each other and then move on. And how can we assume this to be true? Because that is what happened! There is even a mitzvah to give a woman a get (a Jewish divorce document) which means sometimes a marriage is meant to end perhaps so other things can happen.

And the only thing a person might justiďŹ ably struggle with was what he wanted during that whole process. And if he feels there were things he should have wanted differently, he can change now what he wants and become, as a result, the different person he was always meant to be!

Of course, this does not mean we have no need to work at the things we need to accomplish; Hashem wants us to develop the ratzon or desires we are given, in a healthy way; even though we cannot undo or change the actions of the past, we can change what we want in the present moment.

And perhaps this is the difference between the calf and the cherubs. Both represent life at

its beginnings: the young calf, and according to Jewish tradition the golden cherubs with childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s faces, full of innocence and beginnings.

But the calf is an animal which will by deďŹ nition be driven only by its base animal instincts, with no freedom of choice and no ability to change what it wants, whilst the cherub is the human being in the making whose ability to change and want what Hashem wants us to want, is what makes all the difference in the human experience.

The mistake of the Golden calf was what they wanted, and from that great mistake, the journey from the slave mentality of Egypt wherein the slave has no freedom of choice to becoming a free nation on the land of Israel, was about discovering just how much more we could and even should want, to make a difference in the world.

This, too, may be why these golden cherubs were in the holy of holies of the Tabernacle and later the Temple, because that is where we start to realize that what we want should not be just about ourselves but about something so much greater than ourselves.

And make no mistake about it: On many levels, what we want is who we really are.

Perhaps this Shabbat, we can take some time to consider what we want, why we want it, and whether the things we want are our greatest blessing, or our greatest challenge.

Rescuing Chagall’s paintings, abandoning Chagall

By Rafael Medoff, JNS.org The new George Clooney film, “The Monuments Men,” tells the thrilling story of U.S. military personnel who during World War II risked their lives to rescue paintings by the likes of Rembrandt, Picasso, and Chagall that the Nazis had stolen.

But for Connecticut civil rights attorney Bill Bingham, the story is one of tragic irony.

His father, Hiram Bingham IV, was a dissident U.S. diplomat who helped rescue Marc Chagall after the Roosevelt administration abandoned the painter—the same administration that later made such efforts to recover Chagall’s paintings. Save the artwork, abandon the artist? It’s a peculiar legacy, as Bingham explains in this exclusive interview.

JNS: Is it true that Chagall was initially reluctant to leave Europe?

Bingham: “Chagall had lived in France for most of the previous two decades. Like many Jews, he felt bound to it by family ties, by the familiar sights and sounds and pleasures, and of course by the general uncertainty that goes with starting a new life halfway across the world. So when the pro-Nazi Vichy government took over in 1940, he wasn’t immediately ready to make the break.”

JNS: How did your father come into contact with him?

Bingham: “Dad was a vice-consul at the American consulate in Marseilles. Officially he was supposed to implement the Roosevelt administration’s visa policy, which was basically to look for reasons to reject visa applications from Jewish refugees. But unofficially, Dad was actively helping Varian Fry, an American journalist who came to France in 1940 to rescue refugees.”

JNS: How did the U.S. government respond to Fry’s mission?

Simone was planning to lease the site to Mt. Sinai Hospital for a specialty medical center.

Residents formed the Community Coalition of the Five Towns to oppose that proposed sale. They wanted the recreational areas on the site that includes ball fields, basketball courts and a playground preserved.

Mt. Sinai’s proposed plan was to only retain the playground, while calling for 450 parking spaces, which community members believed would have added traffic to an already congested area.

Joshua Schein, who heads the Community Coalition, said the purchase by HALB could be good for the community if it includes preservation of the recreational space and residents are allowed to use it when school is not in session.

“It is important that whatever is [on the site] benefits the community as a whole, and especially the children of the community,” Schein said.

Steven Zuller, a Woodmere resident and HALB board vice president, said that his school is sensitive to the concerns and interests of the neighboring community and that the board and executive staff are committed to ensuring that HALB is a reliable partner and good neighbor.

“The main message is clear,” wrote Hirt and Jerry Williams, board chairman, in a letter to parents, “we plan to use the facility just as it was used for decades — as an elementary school.”

“Our goal is to create a mutually-acceptable plan for community use of school fields and playgrounds when not in school use,” said Zuller.

Lawrence district officials said that informational meetings at which residents can ask questions and air their concerns will be held prior to the March 31 vote. Details for these sessions was unavailable at press time.

JNS: How do you feel about the work that the “Monuments Men” carried out?

Bingham: “They deserve credit for what they did. I’m glad they rescued all those precious paintings and artifacts. But I’m troubled that in a case like that of Chagall, the Roosevelt administration was so interested in saving the artwork and not very concerned about saving the artist.

“And the other irony is this—they were so interested in saving artwork, but if their abandonment of Chagall had led to his death, think of all the great works of art that never would have come into being—from the Chagall murals in Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Opera House, to the stained glass windows at the Hadassah hospital, in Jerusalem. So in a sense, Fry and my father and their comrades not only saved lives but did a great service for the art world, and all of humanity, for generations to come.”

C’hurst yeshiva student arrested in graffiti case

By Jeff Bessen A senior at an alternative yeshiva high school in Cedarhurst was arrested Thursday for at least eight incidents of anti-Semitic graffiti at Long Island Rail Road stations in the Five Towns.

The 18-year-old, a resident of Far Rockaway enrolled at Priority-1: Torah Academy of LawrenceCedarhurst, was charged with eight counts of felony criminal mischiefthird degree as a hate crime, eight counts of criminal mischief-fourth degree and eight counts of making graffiti, both of which are Class A misdemeanors.

Police said the suspect admitted that on eight occasions since December 2012, he used a black marker to deface advertising billboards on LIRR station platforms. The graffiti usually included expletives.

The arrest resulted from the joint efforts of the Nassau County Police Department and Metropolitan Transit Authority Police. “Thanks to the work of the men and women of the Nassau County Police Department and MTA Police, a suspect who is responsible for many anti-Semitic crimes in our community was apprehended,” said County Legislator

Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence).

Investigators had documented 11 incidents of the graffiti since December 2012, including eight at the Cedarhurst station, three at Lawrence and one at Hewlett. The MTA Police said their investigation of the other three incidents is continuing.

“Thank you to all who were involved in finding and apprehending this suspect,” Cedarhurst resident Jeffrey Leb posted on Facebook Thursday night. “It is only with the combined efforts of many that we were able to catch this criminal.”

Leb had documented incidents of the graffiti since last October and that prompted stories last November in The Jewish Star [LIRR vandals triple attacks in Five Towns] and Nassau Herald. A follow up story [Cops, MTA eye bias in 5 Towns] was published this Thursday.

Nassau County Crime Stoppers issued a wanted poster last month that offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible. The posters were distributed at local train stations by members of the county’s Police Explorers, a volunteer youth group whose members are preparing for careers in law enforcement.

Those lucky enough to score a finished room had issues as well. Some had no water, doors, light bulbs or electricity.

Bobsledder Johnny Quinn just might take home the gold for the worst Sochi experiences. First, he gets out of the shower to realize that his bathroom door (yes, he was one of the lucky ones who actually had a door to his bathroom) was jammed and he had to break through the door to escape. As if that wasn’t enough, he and some members of his team were stuck in the elevator as well.

Among some other complaints: “My hotel room has no water. The front desk said ‘If the water is restored, do not use on your face because it contains something very dangerous.’”

“We have no light bulbs.”

“We have no electricity.”

There were actually tweets of people willing to trade their light bulbs for a door, ala “Let’s Make a Deal” Olympic style.

Opening night ceremonies had its glitches as well. Five giant snowflake fireworks were each supposed to turn into the five rings of the Olympics, albeit only four made the transition.

Among the humorous spots: The last thing we would have expected was the Russian Police Choir to perform “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. It was like a skit straight from Saturday Night Live. An amusing stiff rendition of the disco-inspired tune.

We would want to find a hill that was really steep and slippery. Well that’s sort of what the luge is, except it’s a million times faster. Picture an amusement park ride that hits a glitch and it runs out of control at about 140 miles per hour. One, shall I say, that does not have to follow the amusement park ride rules of safety. Well, it’s sort of the same, except this one is on ice. I always wonder, why does someone decide to train for the luge? When they’re little does their dad say “Son, there is no pressure whatsoever, but should you decide that you want to try your hand at the luge, we set up a course in the backyard for you.”

Curling Not that I don’t have respect for athletes who curl, but really?!?

The object of this sport is more boring to me than watching chess. Curling involves two teams pushing large stones with handles on them, and getting their stones closest to the center of a large target that is painted on the ice. But, rather than just making it a shuffleboard contest, there are sweepers that can help the rock slide along the ice, captains

You can make these ahead of time and save them in an airtight container at room temperature or in the freezer. They will keep for months at a time, and are great additions to cakes, cupcakes and most of your desserts.

Ingredients: 6 ounces semi sweet chocolate 2 Tablespoons Crisco Directions: Place chocolate and Crisco into a microwave safe glass bowl Heat for 45 seconds or until Crisco is melted. Stir until smooth and free of lumps.

It might need a few more seconds in the microwave. Be careful not to burn it.

Next, take a metal cookie sheet and turn it upside down and pour the chocolate onto the center. With a flat spatula or knife spread the chocolate into a thin layer.

Let it cool and harden until a finger touching it leaves a slight mark but doesn’t leave an actual imprint.

Scrape along the bottom of the pan and the chocolate will curl up. If the chocolate seems too soft, put it in the refrigerator for a minute or two.

They can be stored at room temperature, but stick them in the freezer right before adorning your cakes or desserts so they won’t melt while handling them.

t’s that time again.

I remember as a kid being glued to the TV in 1972, watching Mark Spitz (my future husband, or so I thought at the time).

He was my favorite Olympian. He was handsome, talented, won seven gold medals, was planning to go to dental school, and he was WHO’S IN THE Jewish — a great catch.

KITCHEN Can it be that it’s been 42 years since Mark Spitz won everyones’ hearts? Thirtyeight years since “the Dorothy Hamill” wedge haircut was the craze, and we got to see the Hamill Camel? Twenty years since Tonya Harding arranged to have Nancy Kerrigan’s knee cap smashed so that Judy Joszef she couldn’t be chosen to the Olympic team that year?

We cheer, gasp, shed a tear and hold our breath as these disciplined athletes compete.

Four years of training over 12 hours each day, and it all comes down to milliseconds sometimes.

Although the Russians have spent over $51 billion, that didn’t ensure that everything was going to run smoothly. Reports have been rampant about mishaps.

One of the major gripes that seem to be universal is the dismal state of accommodations in Sochi. Visitors, journalists, and athletes have been tweeting about their troubles, from plumbing disasters to having stray dogs and construction workers wandering through their still unfinished hotel rooms.

However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit

Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership.

The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk.

The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect.

Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.

DRS parents, sons celebrate joy of being Jewish

By Yitzchak Carroll The sounds of lively music and dancing filled the air at Davis Renov Stahler (DRS) Yeshiva High School’s 17th annual Parent-Son Melave Malka, held at the school’s campus in Woodmere on Feb. 8.

“The goal of the Melava Malka is to celebrate the joy of being a Jew and having a relationship with G-d, and taking the joy and spirit of Shabbat into the week and into the year,” said Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky, about the purpose of the event. “It is the one night the entire Yeshiva family gets together to celebrate these things. The Parent-Son Melava Malka highlights the positive spirit of being Jewish,” he added.

The Melava Malka commenced as students, parents, and faculty members enjoyed a kumzitz together, accompanied

by a band comprised of DRS faculty members and Rebbeim.

Beloved Rebbi Rabbi Shlomo Klapholtz, who has been teaching in DRS since its inception in 1997, was honored for his dedication to the Yeshiva.

“Rabbi Klapholtz has been such a role model to our students for the 17 years of the Yeshiva’s existence,” said Rabbi Kaminetsky regarding why Rabbi Klapholtz was honored.

A video tribute to Rabbi Klapholtz was shown, and he was also presented with a plaque and award in recognition of his service and dedication to DRS. “It’s a special zechus (merit) to come here and learn with the talmidim (students) every day,” said Rabbi Klapholtz.

In the gym, students and parents enjoyed a scrumptious dairy buffet, and a video highlighting the school spirit and

unity amongst students at DRS, including the annual Shabbaton in November and Color War in December, was shown.

“The Melava Malka really brought out the achdus (unity) in the school,” said sophomore Jared Willner. Torah Growth Awards were awarded to Joseph Sultan, Jeremy Brody, Jason Loskove, Ari Savitsky, Jakob Deutsch, Avi Beer, Kevin Marek, Mordy Kirsch, Aaron Dua, Judah Willig, Matthew Rindenow, and Eli Alter. Freshman Shalom Rafailov, sophomore David Kazlow, junior Yehuda Inslicht, and senior Jacob Skolnick were presented with peer-voted Midot (good traits) awards.

Students, parents, Rebbeim, and faculty danced together and celebrated the joy of being a Jew together.

Lunch and learn at HAFTR HANC kids have math fun A new Lunch and Learn Program has started for a group of 4th and 5th grade boys at the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway.

Once a week this group will meet during lunch and they will learn a Daf Hashavua curriculum. This curriculum is taken from the newly designed Daf Yomi for Children in partnership with BarIlan University.

It focuses on basic mishna and gemorrah concepts, and meaningful stories about tanaim and amoraim. It also focuses on higher level thinking and strong Hebrew language skills. It is designed to

provide a healthy introduction to learning mishna and gemorrah.

This class is being taught by Rabbi Dovid Kupchik, Middle School Menahel and Senior Rabbi of the Lower School. A similar class is starting for 6th graders which will be taught by Rabbi Yisrael Moshe Siff.

Thanks to the innovative and fantastic math teachers at HANC’s Samuel & Elizabeth Bass Golding Elementary School, in West Hempstead, students in all grades are learning and having fun with math!

In Mrs. Reiff’s first grade class, students are using a Tic Tac Toe game to practice their addition and subtraction facts. Mrs. Spitalnik’s class used football and the Super Bowl to teach math to fourth and fifth graders.

Sixth graders in Mrs. Pinn’s math class completed a unit on shapes and geometry by identifying all the hidden shapes found in a picture of a robot. And although it may sound like a simple assignment, the picture was designed to make it very difficult to find the shapes and it was actually quite tricky!

Mesivta Rambam: Keeping the kesher Following Rosh Mesivta Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman’s trip to visit the Rambam alumni learning in Yeshivot in Israel, Rambam Gemara Iyun Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Ziskind found himself surrounded by Rambam talmidim, sharing in Torah and learning.

Last summer before the yearly Seuda Peradih of Rambam’s advanced Gemara shiur, held in the Ziskinds’ bungalow, it was decided to keep the kesher throughout the

year. When Rabbi Ziskind came to visit Israel, the talmidim from his Double Bais shiur would commit to, once again, strengthen the kesher. Eitan Blumstein ‘13, now learning in Yeshivat Shalavim, and Eric Grossman ’13, learning in Netiv Aryeh worked out the details.

The reunion started with a shiur at the Kotel, on the sixth perek in Berachos, followed Maariv, after which the group returned with the Rabbi and Rebbitzen to Geuala for

supper where they were joined by honorary shiur member, Yitchok Meir Ziskind, as well as Rambam grads, Dovi Bitterman, Yair Lichtman, Michael Rosenfeld, Dovid Simpser and Joseph Yitzhaky.

Despite a time difference and thousands of miles, from Rabbi Friedman to Rabbi Ziskind, to the Rebbeim and teachers who send emails, make phone calls, and visit, Rambam talmidim may graduate, but they never really leave.
