Israeli Immigrant Absorption Minister Zeev Elkin, who accompanied Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a trip to Berlin on Monday, was scheduled to meet with German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere on Tuesday to discuss the current inďŹ&#x201A;ux of migrants into Germany from Syria and North Africa.

The Germans have asked Elkin to present the Israeli model of immigrant absorption so that they can implement the relevant aspects domestically. Elkin remarked on Monday that the Israeli model includes methods of handling large waves of immigration and that despite the differences between the immigration to Israel and to Germany there are a lot of commonalities that can be studied and implemented.

village’s mayor, Benjamin Weinstock, said that programs like New York Rising are working to help implement flood-mitigation projects.

“So that the bay doesn’t flood back into the streets, we need something to pump the water back into the bay,” Weinstock said. “We signed an inter-municipality agreement, which involves a study for the next 12 months to determine what can be done. Hopefully, once the study is done, in the two years after that, a plan can get going. We came up with a plan or proposal for an underground water receptacle, which would be a very significant help, and a generator to work in storms.”

Weinstock added that getting the money to implement those mitigation concepts isn’t easy.

“We are working on fixing this problem, possibly with state funds,” he said. “We were shortchanged in the amount based on population, as most of the funding is going to New York City. The money is a disparate amount.”

On Jan. 20, three days before a blizzard dropped nearly 30 inches of snow in the Five Towns that brought flooding on Inwood’s Bayswater Boulevard, Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky asked the state’s Department of Transportation commissioner, Matthew Driscoll, why more has not been done to repair the Nassau Expressway, a state roadway that serves as a major connection between Nassau County’s South Shore and Queens, carrying 40,000 vehicles a day.

“It is a disgrace that, in many respects, we are no better off today than we were the day after Superstorm Sandy,” Kaminsky said. “Bureaucratic delays are no excuse for imperiling the safety of Long Islanders.”

By Vanessa Parker Snow from recent storms melted and combined with high tides to create severe flooding in the low-lying areas of the Five Towns last week, leaving local leaders hoping government agencies could help mitigate this recurring problem.

Areas that were especially susceptible to the flooding included Meadowmere Park; Peninsula Boulevard, from Rockaway Turnpike to Arbuckle Avenue in Cedarhurst; the intersection of West Broadway and Taft Avenue, and Bayswater Boulevard, in Inwood; and state Route 878, the Nassau Expressway.

Severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy, Meadowmere Park continues to endure flooding, according to resident Diane Kirchner.

“During the last flood, we received about 16 inches of water,” she said, referring to the Feb. 8–9 snowstorm. “There was no way out or in, and we were stranded. No kids went to schools.

Our fire trucks couldn’t go in or out.”

But there are no new mitigation projects scheduled for this community near Jamaica Bay. “The town does not have any planned drainage projects in these areas currently,” said Town of Hempstead spokeswoman Susan Trenkle-Pokalsky. “The town and county did a grade raise for Meadowmere Park roads about 15 years ago.”

Kirchner said she remembered that project. It made a difference, she said, but the entire residential area still floods, especially after big storms and during high tides. “We used to get flooded every three to five days before that,” she said.

There was also flooding last week about a mile from Meadowmere Park, along Rockaway Turnpike and Peninsula Boulevard, and from there to Arbuckle Avenue in Cedarhurst. The

Modern Orthodox ed: Caught between 2 priorites

By Maayan Jaffe-Hoffman Wen the Pew Research Center published its much-discussed survey of American Jews in 2013, the findings seemed auspicious for the Orthodox denomination. Orthodox Jews have a much younger population than the Conservative and Reform movements, as well as higher fertility rates, meaning the Orthodox share of U.S. Jewry is growing. Couple that with how the falloff from Orthodoxy appears to be declining, and it looks like Orthodox Jewish education is working.

So why did Yeshiva University (YU) feel the need to recently host a symposium in Jerusalem, titled Modern Orthodox Education in 21st Century Israel and America, at which presenters were asked to undergo a public and communal cheshbon nefesh (spiritual accounting) of the state of the “modern Orthodox” educational system?

The balance between “modern” and “Orthodox,” presenters said, is becoming increasingly hard to achieve.

“We are asking students to care about an engage with universal human concerns and at the same time to recognize there are distinct Jewish conventional concerns,” said Karen Bacon, the Mordecai D. Katz and Dr. Monique C. Katz Dean of Undergraduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences at YU. “We ask them to take advantage of the American passion for individual autonomy and independence, and to still be a part of the community—to build community and to recognize communal authority. That is a lot to put on the plate of an undergraduate.”

That sentiment was particularly embodied by YU President Richard M. Joel’s remark that he doesn’t have a formal definition or description

of what “modern Orthodox” education is—other than “complicated.”

“We have to say what we are and not what we are not,” Joel said.

So how, then, can “what we are” be described?

“For modern Orthodox education to sustain itself, it must proactively provide an educational experience that educates toward the values it believes in,” wrote longtime Jewish educator Rabbi Scot A. Berman in a 2009 essay published in Mosorot, a forum of modern Orthodox discourse published by Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School.

The modern Orthodox community nor its educational system are monolithic, explained Rabbi Shlomo Brody, an instructor at Yeshivat Hakotel in Jerusalem, in a separate “Mosorot” essay. The result of this diversity and the inher-

ent dichotomy between kodesh (holy) and chol (secular) studies makes it “futile to speak of any form of ideal graduate or product” from modern Orthodox schooling.

Brody argued that the modern Orthodox educational system has long promoted specific educational ideals to its students: they should be passionate about Torah study and Jewish law; Zionist; and have an appreciation for human and life sciences as well as general contemporary Jewish life (but from a Jewish perspective).

“To speak in these generic, idealistic terms simply … obfuscates educational agendas,” wrote Brody.

Esti Rosenberg, founder of the Migdal Oz Beit Midrash for Women seminary in Israel, expressed similar sentiments at the Jerusalem symposium. She said that sometimes, “We are literally crazy. We are sending our children—and ourselves—to challenges and places they don’t need to go, and they don’t have enough tools to cope with [those situations].”

Whether it’s Harvard or Yale or the Israeli army, Rosenberg said that for years she believed the main goal of a modern Orthodox education was to give students self-confidence in their religious life so that they could maintain faith against the challenges of the modern world. But today, she said, “For some of our students it is too big a challenge.”

Sixty years ago, modern Orthodoxy meant reading Shakespeare or studying Leo Tolstoy. Today, the Internet and other areas of technology have deepened the divide between the holy and secular worlds.

“We don’t give our kids enough tools to differentiate between kodesh and chol, and to differentiate between chol and chol,” said Rosenberg, explaining that some parts of the secular world can be holy, while others are not. Her point was reiterated by symposium presenter Rabbi Meir Soloveichik in his statement that children need to know “where to draw the line.”

Take women’s issues, for instance. Public discourse on that subject usually conveys an acute blurring of the lines of modern Orthodoxy.

The gentle balance between running forward as empowered women, and stopping within the bounds of halacha and tradition, is a topic that Rosenberg said can be a conference all on its own. She said that modern Orthodox women, and the community that supports them, have only a handful of options—and the first is rearing women back in.

The second option is to continue to challenge women Jewishly and trust that they will stop exactly where the community wants them to, and be happy with their roles. Otherwise, one can accept the reality that as some women become more knowledgeable and empowered, they will test boundaries. They will ask themselves questions that the community must address, such as, “Why should I get up on time for minyan if I am not counted?”

But it is not all “doom and gloom,” according to YU’s Joel. Rather, in looking at past explanations of the role of modern Orthodox education through the eyes of previous YU presidents Dr. Bernard Revel, Rabbi Dr. Samuel Belkin, and Dr. Norman Lamm, Joel noted that each president grappled with the balance between Torah and science in education, just as the modern Orthodox community is doing today.

“We have to build an integrated life based on Torah. We cannot remove ourselves from society or meet the expectations of a highly secular society. To achieve shlemut (wholeness) … life isn’t a religious track and a secular track, but an integrated, harmonious existence,” Joel said.

To that end, there is a need to combine the methodologies of the American modern Orthodox and Israeli national religious education systems, according to Rosenberg. She explained that while American education is too intellectual, Israeli education has been accused of being too spiritual.

Where does the modern Orthodox community go from here? In his “Mosorot” essay, Brody concluded that the flourishing of the modern Orthodox educational system will “depend on our commitment to advancing our cause and ideals, as well as having enough self-awareness to understand our challenges and opportunities.”

By Joshua Sharf President Obama last Thursday signed into law the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015 (H.R. 644). As is often the case, the White House issued a signing statement along with the action, highlighting areas of disagreement with the new law. In this instance, the statement mentioned only one section in the 160-page bill.

“As with any bipartisan compromise legislation, there are provisions in this bill that we do not support, including a provision that contravenes longstanding U.S. policy towards Israel and the occupied territories, including with regard to Israeli settlement activity,” the White House said.

The section in question, Section 909, deals

with Israel—taking a strong stand against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to economically isolate the Jewish state through trade sanctions.

Most importantly, for the purposes of BDS, the legislation erases the distinction between Israel’s pre-1967 borders—also known as the “Green Line”—and the Jewish state’s undisputed territory.

Notably, the White House signing statement did not say that the administration would decline to enforce this section of the new law, perhaps because there are no Constitutional grounds for doing so.

The section lays out a policy statement regarding American trade with Israel, sets out a negotiating objective of discouraging and

eliminating boycotts of Israel, requires the executive branch to report annually on BDS activities here and abroad, and prevents U.S. courts from enforcing judgments based on other countries’ BDS laws.

The critical element is that identical treatment (for business purposes) of Israel and the territories beyond the Green Line is included twice. One inclusion is in the policy section 909(b)(7), which states the measure “supports efforts to prevent investigations or prosecutions by governments or international organizations of United States persons solely on the basis of such persons doing business with Israel, with Israeli entities, or in any territory controlled by Israel.”

tion, stating, “The term ‘boycott of, divestment from, and sanctions against Israel’ means actions by states, nonmember states of the United Nations, international organizations, or affiliated agencies of international organizations that are politically motivated and are intended to penalize or otherwise limit commercial relations specifically with Israel or persons doing business in Israel or in any territory controlled by Israel.”

It is the law’s failure to distinguish between sides of the Green Line for purposes of trade that the Obama administration equates with contradicting policy with regard to disputed territories.

This isn’t the first time that the Obama administration and this Congress have faced off over how to handle BDS. Very similar language was included in last year’s bill granting Trade Promotion Authority [Section 102(b) (20)] for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

At the time, the State Department objected to the language, claiming that it hampered the negotiating authority in the bill. “[B]y conflating Israel and ‘Israeli-controlled territories,’ a provision of the Trade Promotion Authority legislation runs counter to longstanding U.S. policy towards the occupied territories, including with regard to settlement activity. Every U.S. administration since 1967—Democrat and Republican alike—has opposed Israeli settlement activity beyond the 1967 lines. This Administration is no different.

The U.S. government has never defended or supported Israeli settlements and activity associated with them and, by extension, does not pursue policies or activities that would legitimize them,” said the State Department.

Section 102 of that measure dealt with trade negotiating objectives, and by issuing this statement, the State Department indicated a potential unwillingness to pursue this objective in TPP negotiations.

In response, the latest language on Israel was included in the most recently signed trade bill, which is unrelated to the TPP. This is separate, but related to, the administration’s recent decision to implement a 20-year-old Customs rule that requires separate labeling for products from the West Bank and Gaza. That rule was initially adopted in 1995, after the adoption of the Oslo Accords, and was intended to encourage economic activity in the areas that would soon be under the control of the Palestinian Authority.

The sudden enforcement of the Customs rule is widely seen as punitive against Israel, discouraging Israeli economic activity in the West Bank area. (There is no current Israeli presence in Gaza.)

That decision came several months after the announcement that the European Union (EU) would begin special labeling of products from across the Green Line. The State Department’s reaction to that labeling is recorded in one of the most remarkable extended efforts at evasion under questioning by Matt Lee of AP. In that exchange, the State Department steadfastly insisted that the Obama administration opposed BDS, insisted that the EU was aware of the administration’s position on its forthcoming labeling rules, and refused to disclose what that position was. He did eventually admit that the EU’s labeling of goods from across the Green Line “could be seen as a step on the way to a boycott.”

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has introduced legislation (S. 2474) that specifically seeks to counter the Customs labeling regime.

Even though H.R. 644 does not directly address the issue of labeling, its reporting requirement could still put the Obama administration in a tough spot. The administration might have to include itself and its own labeling actions in the report, which could lead to some contentious and embarrassing Congressional testimony when the report is delivered.

Who cares if Sanders is Jewish?

I

t would be churlish to deny the remarkable achievement of Senator Bernie Sanders in decisively winning the New Hampshire primary.

For months, Sanders was depicted as an eccentric whose limited appeal would be crushed by the ruthless Hillary Clinton political machine. But there he was at the podium in Manchester, laying out an agenda — an increased minimum wage, “breaking up” the big banks, a gutting of the criminal justice system — that sounded, in places, akin to what the followers of the Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky called “transitional demands” (by which he meant a strategy to expose the democratic limitations of capitalism through leveling demands that cannot be met without a socialist revolution).

It was stirring stuff, enhanced by Sanders’s strong Brooklyn accent and his facial expression, which betrays that he’s spent much of his life going from one left-wing meeting to another. In particular, he reminded me of another leading Jewish socialist whom I knew when I was growing up in England, the late Ian Mikardo, a Labour Party parliamentarian who represented a working class, east London constituency.

I met “Mik,” as he was known, through Poale Zion, a socialist Zionist organization affiliated with the Labour Party. The son of Jewish immigrants from western Ukraine, Mikardo embraced both the Labour Party and Zionism as a young man. For him, there was no contradiction between these two commitments; for Mikardo, socialism and Zionism were joined at the hip.

What resulted was a strong, proud Jewish

identity that stayed with him for his entire life. Declaring yourself a Jew, a socialist and a Zionist was a brave thing to do during the Cold War, when the Soviets and their official doctrine of “anti-Zionism” exercised undue influence on much of the left.

Which brings me back to Sanders. Most Americans would not have been struck by his description of himself as the son of a “Polish immigrant.” But some Jews were, and not necessarily those on the right. Seconds after that remark, Chemi Shalev of the leftist daily Haaretz tweeted, “Is it parochial to be irked a bit by Sanders describing himself as the son of a ‘Polish immigrant’?”

I suppose it is parochial, but I’ll admit that I too was irked. “Ian Mikardo would never have played down his Jewish origins,” was my first thought. My second thought was essentially frustration at Sanders’s apparent ignorance of the society that his forebears came from. The nature of Poland at that time determined that when Eli Sanders came to America, he did so as a Jew, not as a Pole.

Since that speech, several reports in the Jewish and general media highlighted two factors: that Sanders is largely indifferent— note well, indifferent, not hostile—to Judaism and Jewish identity, and that most Americans don’t care that he’s Jewish and most American Jews aren’t preparing to break out the streamers in case he becomes this country’s first Jewish president. ewish or not, the foreign policy of a Sanders administration would make the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency seem like a halcyon period by comparison. To begin with, Sanders isn’t really interested in the rest of the world—like most leftists these days, he has abandoned

the principle of internationalism. Working conditions at Walmart animate him; Syrian children murdered by poison gas are someone else’s problem.

The milieu that is influencing Sanders’s thoughts on foreign policy—when he can be bothered to think about it at all, that is—is one that is nakedly hostile to Israel. On the Middle East, he listens to J Street, a Jewish anti-Israel group that strangely masquerades as “pro-Israel,” and its ally the National Iranian American Council, which is the closest thing the Iranian regime has to a lobby in Washington. So it hardly takes a soothsayer to figure out that a Sanders foreign policy would be grounded in isolationism, together with a willingness to let Russia, China, and Iran run amok in the name of reining in American imperialism.

The Sanders phenomenon speaks to a wider problem, namely the growth of extremism in American politics. And because extremists of different stripes have more in common than they are prepared to acknowledge, seeming polar opposites can end up being very similar.

I don’t perceive a significant amount of light between Sanders and Donald Trump on foreign policy — both are isolationists, and both regard the world outside America as another galaxy.

If there’s anything to be said here in Sanders’s favor, it’s that he’s less giddy than Trump is at the prospect of meeting Vladimir Putin.

But when it comes to substance, both candidates—one declaring that we need a socialist America, the other declaring that we need to make America great again—will preside over the continuing loss in global credibility that has become so stark under Obama.

oy do I wish I had been in Denver last week. It’s at a time like this that I feel true love and homesickness for my hometown.

When I sat down to watch the Super Bowl with some friends, one of them quipped: “Do you even know the rules of football?” “Yes, I know the basics,” I replied, “I know what a touchdown is,” to which one friend burst out laughing.

Over the years I have accumulated more basics than that, like … the object is to get the ball down the field; there are downs, there are yard lines, uh, basics like that.

Because I didn’t exactly project the image of a TV sports fan, especially of a sport that’s so violent, my friend assumed I knew nothing about the game. And I admit, she was closer to the truth in her question than I was in my reply.

But what she didn’t understand was this: Denver. And the Broncos. It’s a Denver thing.

Period. It’s not for nothing that we are the strongest sports fan city in the NFL. If you are from around those parts, Broncos matter. You are loyal. Period.

It’s good fun, and a team you can truly be proud of.

So even though one of my favorite columnists, George Will, warned about the

dangerous, cumulative brain damage side of the game, joking (or maybe not joking) that the Super Bowl ought to be called “The 50th Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Bowl” — no worries. He also referred to it as the “national campfire,” as well as noting that it is so august that it is usually denoted with Roman numerals.

I settled in to watch the game. t Shabbat lunch prior to Super Bowl Sunday the meal was hosted by a professional sports newscaster. He said, personally, he would love for Peyton and the Broncos to win, but professionally, his bet was on the Panthers.

Wanting to be a polite and gracious guest, I refrained from countering his assertion.

“Are you serious?” I thought to myself. “Does this guy understand what is standing behind the Broncos and behind Peyton Manning?”

A family. A huge town of a family.

A defense like nobody’s business, of course (even un-sports educated me kept noticing there was something special going on with #58 before I heard of Von Miller post-game).

But also, a deep hope for the family’s quarterback Peyton Manning to retire with the fulfilling experience of a final Super Bowl win.

Oh, and one more thing: love. Pure, unadulterated love.

If something as micro as the orange crush drink that’s been sold out at supermarkets for weeks. Perhaps Bronco fanship is not limited to being compared to a religion, but also to an addiction.

And how about this? We’re getting deep into the political season — that’s all people

are talking about here in New York — but in Denver, not a peep. There is only one thing right now if you are a Denverite, and that’s the Broncos. End of story.

Aside for the love of the game and the love of the team, a real love and respect toward Peyton has grown over the years. We all wanted to ride his last wave out with him at the top. Someone, a star no less, who makes an effort to limit the attention on himself; someone who, aside from the grit, discipline and perseverance that he models, gives such a perspective to the meaning and enjoyment of the game; someone who, in the throes of stiff, high stakes competition, is selfless and still thinks of the other team.

In his own words: “Ah, but do I pray for victory? No … I pray to keep both teams injury free, and personally that I use whatever talent I have to the best of my ability. But I don’t think G-d really cares about who wins football games, except as winning might influence the character of some person or group.”

With all the Bronco religion jokes (I teased this was the “yovel” of the Super Bowls, and that Denver was hosting a massive Rosh Chodesh Adar parade, not to mention there are always the Bronco Faithfuls) and the obvious takeaway of “it’s not just one player but it takes a team,” perhaps there is an actual musar here from an unexpected place within the sea of blue and orange.

Antonin Scalia: Tribute to a great jurist KOSHER BOOKWORM

wo weeks ago, in my review of Rabbi Nachum Amselâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Encyclopedia of Jewish Values,â&#x20AC;? I brieďŹ&#x201A;y touched on his essay on the Jewish take on gun control.

Within that essay we explored our faithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regard for human life and for the defense of our loved ones and property. This week, with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, we lost one of our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest defenders of civilian gun ownership.

There is much to be said of the legacy of Justice Scalia, including his consistent and spirited defense of the Constitution in ways that were relevant to American Jewry, especially to the spiritually observant among us.

In her essay â&#x20AC;&#x153;Justice Antonin Scalia and the Jewsâ&#x20AC;? on Aish.com, Dr. Yvette Alt Miller cites several little-known facts about Scalia as they relate to the American Jewish community, including: Scalia was the ďŹ rst judge to use the Yiddish word chutzpah in a written decision of the U.S. Supreme Court. â&#x20AC;˘Scalia was one of three dissenters in the 2015 case of Zivotofsky v. Kerry, which heard arguments that the United States should describe the place of birth of Americans born in Jerusalem as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israel.â&#x20AC;? The two judges appointed by President Obama joined the majority against this opinion. â&#x20AC;˘In 1989, Scalia was part of the high court majority that ruled that a menorah could be displayed on public property. Attorney Nathan Lewin brought this case, County of Al-

The editorial concludes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What an insight into the humility of a constitutional fundamentalist as he sits down to judge the laws of a Congress of mortals before the Founders who wrote the Constitution under which we all live â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and wrote it, the record shows, well aware of the light of Sinai which animates so much of the tradition in which America prospers.â&#x20AC;?

Gabe Kahn, in the Jewish Week (Nov. 11, 2011) reported: â&#x20AC;&#x153;A hero to many in the Orthodox community on matters relating to the separation of church and state, Scaliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comments on circumcision at a Yeshiva University forum last Wednesday night may have come as an unpleasant surprise to those who think the Justiceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opinions ďŹ&#x201A;ow from his own religious beliefs. How would he have ruled, he was asked by attorney Nathan Lewin, had a 2011 attempt to criminalize circumcision in San Francisco succeeded and eventually made its way to the high court? â&#x20AC;&#x153; Scalia said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the practice is something that society does not want, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not intended to discriminate against Jews in particular, I think the law is perfectly valid.â&#x20AC;? This response left the audience bafďŹ&#x201A;ed. I leave it to you, the reader to check out this repartee between Scalia and Lewin to see how this fascinating discussion played itself out.

Now, back to the gun control rulings. It was Scalia who wrote the majorityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller, prohibiting the banning of handguns commonly used for

protection purposes in the home. Also, to read the Second Amendment as limiting the right to bear arms only to those in a governed military force would be to create exactly the type of state-sponsored force against which the Amendment was meant to protect people.

It remains to be seen how Scaliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing will impact America and its governance.

I choose to conclude these observations with words from an editorial from the New York Sun on Feb. 13: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The death of Antonin Scalia is a sad day for all who cherish the Constitution and all the more so because death has taken the 103th justice at a time when our country is in the midst of what we like to call a constitutional moment. By that we mean a political crisis so deep that nearly every major issue is being brought before the Supreme Court to be examined on the bedrock of the written constitution. How Scalia will be missed.â&#x20AC;?

Visiting the University at Buffalo Law School in 2002, he met with Adjunct Law Professor and Rabbi Nosson Gurary and learned about what Judaism has to say on some pressing legal issues. Scalia later wrote to Rabbi Gurary, expressing his appreciation of learning about Jewish law. â&#x20AC;Ś Later that year he spoke at the inaugural meeting of the National Institute for Judaic Law. But Segall said that is only a perception, and that Iran remains a very dangerous threat for Israel. Doran said this false belief is widely heldâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; not only by Democrats, but by Republicans too. He said President Obama has convinced himself that in the end, Iran and the U.S. have the same interest of defeating Islamic State and that Iran doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really want to destroy Israel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is what Iran tells the U.S. behind closed doors. â&#x20AC;Ś I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe it for a second.â&#x20AC;?

In the meantime, according to Segall, the U.S. lost its place in the game in August 2013 when Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;chemical redlines were crossedâ&#x20AC;? by failing to push through military action against Syria following Assadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s use of chemical weapons. Netanyahu told the conference, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We live in an era where there are two parallel but contradictory trends regarding the State of Israel.â&#x20AC;? On the one hand, Israel faces ongoing diplomatic hostility from longtime friends, including from the European Union and its member countries. On the other hand, non-traditional partners like India, China, Japan, Russia, and African and Latin American nations are warming up to Israel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The ďŹ rst reason is the concern with the spread of militant Islam, which has become a global plague, and the terrorism that it produces,â&#x20AC;? said Netanyahu. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And countries want to have, to beneďŹ t from Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience, our intelligence. I mean military intelligence, special service intelligence, operational experience. They want to partake of that experience to help defend themselves.â&#x20AC;?

By Maayan Jaffe-Hoffman â&#x20AC;&#x153;Timely, realistic, and frighteningâ&#x20AC;? were the words that William Daroff, senior vice president for public policy and director of the Washington OfďŹ ce of the Jewish Federations of North America, used to describe reports about the Middle East security situation.

Speaking on the second day of the leadership mission of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Daroffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarks came after an hour-long session focused on Iran after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and just before another hour-long panel discussion on â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Middle East volcano.â&#x20AC;?

The 42nd annual Israel mission for the Conference of Presidents, an umbrella body representing 50 U.S. Jewish organizations, kicked off on Feb. 14 as the group of more than 100 delegates was welcomed with a speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The meeting reďŹ&#x201A;ected a gloom-and-doom picture of the region. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Syria will leave us with two bad options: we will have either Daesh (Islamic State) or Iran on our border,â&#x20AC;? said Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;alon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think Israel has lost, I think the world has lost,â&#x20AC;? Member of Knesset Yair Lapid, the Yesh Atid partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leader, said regarding Iran.

The Middle East has always been a region wrought with contradictions, but the conference highlighted how in the realm of security, Middle East experts are now unsure what is truth and what is façade, if what will happen tomorrow will be indicative of what will happen in 10 years, and if those we assume are our enemies might just be our friends (or vice versa).

Take the Iran deal. Dr. Emily B. Landau, senior research fellow at Tel Aviv Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), quoted IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot as saying at the INSS conference last month that the Iran deal entails both opportunities and dangers. Landau said both are true. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are working on different timelines; there is a ďŹ ve-year timeline and a 15-year timeline,â&#x20AC;? she explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On the ďŹ ve-year timelines, yes, this is a strategic turning point because [Eizenkot] believes the threat has been delayed. â&#x20AC;Ś Iran will be focused on upholding the deal to get the economic and diplomatic beneďŹ ts of the deal.â&#x20AC;?

But nothing has changed in terms of Iranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strategic goals, and in 15 years Iran will likely have nuclear weapons, which translates into a nuclear Middle East, according to Landau. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Delaying a threat is not taking care of a threat,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Michael Segall, senior analyst for the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, said Iran has moved from covert to overt operations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one is trying to hide behind secrecy anymore,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We see Iran going from being perceived as part of the problem in the Middle East to part of the solution.â&#x20AC;?

South Nassau expanding its Oceanside campus â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our goal is to develop broad, ambulatory regional care with South Nassau as the hub,â&#x20AC;? said Richard Murphy, president and CEO of SNCH. The expansion and the pavilion are both being funded with $154 million that SNCH received from FEMA after Sandy when it purchased Long Beach Medical Center, as well as upwards of $70 million in the hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own capital.

The main building of the South Nassau network, located on Merrick Road in Oceanside, was last expanded in 2006 when the hospital added a new north wing, which is now the main entrance of the building.

The newest expansion is called the southwest addition, and would be located in the rear of the building. However, there are also plans to add a new central utility plant and emergency electrical infrastructure upgrades.

These additions would allow the hospital to keep function in the case of a natural disaster,

and will be built to withstand another hurricane like Sandy.

For South Nassau, the expansion is needed direly. The hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emergency department is designed to handle 35,000 visits per year, but actually takes in around 67,000. The expansion would expand the emergency department from 16,000 to 30,000 square feet, allowing the hospital to see more patients in better settings.

The expansion would also add seven new, state-of-the-art operating rooms. Many of the operating rooms the hospital has now are decades old. And while theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re safe and useable, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not large enough to comfortable hold all of the equipment that modern operating rooms use every day. The new rooms will be larger and better suited for modern usage.

And as one of the only hospitals in the area designated to treat trauma victims, SNCHâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ICU is extremely important. The hospital will expand its critical care unit from 22 beds to

On the Barrier Island, SNCH ďŹ nalized the plans for the Medical Arts Pavilion it is building. After Sandy, South Nassau acquired the assets of Long Beach Medical Center, which was ruined by the storm. The new pavilion is being built on the same location as the former hospital, and even incorporates some of the buildings that survived the storm.

The facility will offer X-ray and CT imaging to patients, and could be expanded to include dialysis, behavioral health and family medicine, pending the results of a need assessment that SNCH will conduct in Long Beach.

It will be a permanent home of a freestanding emergency department, and is being built above a 500-year ďŹ&#x201A;ood plain. The entire building is lifted off the ground.

Many in Long Beach criticized the project, and petitioned South Nassau to reopen a full hospital at the site. But it was something that SNCH executives said just wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feasible.

By Alex Costello South Nassau Communities Hospital just unveiled plans to expand its main Oceanside campus, as well as ďŹ nalized renderings of the Medical Arts Pavilion it is building to replace the Long Beach Medical Center.

Executives from SNCH previewed the plans last week for editors of Herald Community Newspapers and The Jewish Star.

The Oceanside campus will have a four-story, 58,000-square-foot expansion which will enlarge the currently overcrowded emergency room, add seven new operating rooms and expand the ICU to add up to 24 new critical care beds.

SNCH has ďŹ nalized plans for the Medical Arts Pavilion in Long Beach, which will replace the hospital that was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. The 25,000-square-foot building will be an emergency center designed to accommodate 12,000 to 18,000 patients per year, and will be designed to expand if the need arises.

She suggested that I visit Beth Yaacov Synagogue, where I was told that the Jewish community numbers 3,000-4,000. If you go, make an appointment and take a passport for security checks.

Viviana also recommended the nearby CarnicerĂ­a Elias, a kosher food store. When I arrived, it was closed for a mid-afternoon work break (2 or 3 pm to 5 pm) and I was reminded of the once-prevalent practice of siesta. Small shops are still shuttered in the afternoon, while large department stores like El Corte InglĂŠs, where the Gourmet Department stocks kosher foods, remain open all day.

Dining at 10 p.m. is another cultural pattern that endures. Tourists notice this because restaurants are empty before 9:30 p.m. Spaniards meet friends at casual Tapas bars at 8 p.m. and have a sherry, beer, or wine served with tapasâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;manchego (cheese), aceitunas (olives), and salted almendras (almonds)â&#x20AC;&#x201D;and discuss where to dine.

Raciones (small plates to share) are available a la carte and some are vegetarianâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;tortillas (egg and potato pies) and papas bravas (roasted potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce), or pan tomate, (tomato puree on toast). Tapas can either precede dinner or replace dinner.

By Irvina Lew My passion for speaking Spanish, watching Flamenco, drinking Rioja, admiring artwork, walking a labyrinth of narrow streets, and inhaling the scent of orange blossoms intensiďŹ es on every visit to Spain.

These interests inďŹ&#x201A;uenced my choice of careers as a Spanish teacher and travel writer. On repeated trips studying at the University of Salamanca, walking the Camino de Santiago, driving to Galician wine estates, vacationing in Mallorca and Marbella, experiencing spas in Bobadilla and Alicante, attending the Expo in Seville and the Olympics in Barcelona, the culture continues to fascinate me. It also prompts me to pay respect to my Jewish heritage by visiting Jewish communities and attempting to understand what happened there, if not ever comprehending why.

I visited ChamberĂ­, Madridâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old Jewish quarter (JuderĂ­a Vieja), for the ďŹ rst time last November to have lunch at La Escudilla, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only kosher restaurant. Its address on Calle de la SantĂ­sima Trinidad (Sacred Trinity Stret) and close to the Iglesia (Church) subway stop illustrates a common practice in Spain: after the Jews were expelled in 1492, Christians took over the former Jewish neighborhoods and Christianized the public sphere.

McGrath expressed steadfast opposition to Common Core. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Let kids be kids and let teachers teach,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Santino said that when the Democrats last controlled the state Senate, taxes and school funding formulas disadvantaged the suburbs. McGrath â&#x20AC;&#x153;will make sure that the suburbs always have a seat at the table when it comes to the workings of Albany,â&#x20AC;? Santino said.

The April 19 election to ďŹ ll Skelosâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; seat will coincide with the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presidential primary. The district includes the Five Towns, Long Beach and surrounding South Shore areas.

tians lived in this multicultural medieval. Of 10 synagogues, two that were converted into churches post-1492 survive. Sinagoga del Tránsito is now Museo Sefardi, and the 12th-century Sinagoga Santa Maria la Blanca has stunning Mudejar arches and floor tiles (notably, it’s on the street of the Reyes Catolicos, the Catholic kings). The El Greco Museum is worth a visit, and so is the Parador.

The AVE rail trip to Segovia leaves from Chamartin Station and arrives 35 minutes later. The former Sinagoga Mayor, now the Corpus Christi church, opens the Jewish quarter. Segovia’s highlight is the medieval menorah that dates from the Jewish Golden Age in Spain. It is located at the Jewish Museum in the Judería within the former home of a prominent resident Abraham Seneeor.

Córdoba, a UNESCO World Heritage Sight, is less than two hours via AVE from Madrid. The Juderia— near the Tourist Office in Plaza Juda Leví—is notable because its 14th-century synagogue is the only one in Spain not turned into a Christian building, and because there’s a monument to Maimonides, the Jewish doctor and religious thinker.

More time is required for some destinations. By adding an overnight, visitors can leave Cordoba for Seville in time for dinner and stay at a charming, small four-star hotel in Santa Cruz, Sevilla, called Hotel Casas de la Juderia. It’s located on Calle Santa Maria de la Santa, next door to a church with that same name that once was a synagogue.

This hotel resembles a tiny village comprised of a series of pastel townhouses, some dating to the 16th century, fronted by flower-filled courtyards and siding narrow paths. There are arches and columns, expansive rooms, and suites. Add another day for Granada, where the Fountain of the Lions at the amazing Alhambra Palace was a gift from the Jewish community. At the entry to the palace, visitors can see artisans at work creating taracea—geometric patterns inlaid into wood boxes, tables, and chessboards.

In Cosmopolitan Barcelona, just two and a half hours from Madrid via the AVE rail, Jews, including the 13th-century sage Nachmanides, once comprised 15 percent of the population. Here, like many places in Spain, there are hints of a vanished world—but one that I never tire of exploring.

Continued from page 15 ancient Temple. Today the area is a multiethnic mix of artists, intellectuals, and immigrants who mingle at tapas bars that line the streets. I was introduced to a gem: La Musa de Espronceda, where the bar is lined with platters of huge portions of open-face Basque sandwiches. It’s just a short walk from the church of San Lorenzo, a former synagogue, Atocha Railroad Station, and the Museum of Reina Sofia.

Reina Sofia is a must-see, for me, to pay homage to Picasso’s Guernica, the iconic anti-war painting the artist created after Franco bombed the little Basque village. General Franco had previously invited Picasso to display a painting at the World’s Fair in Paris 1937, and the famed cubist artist refused to give the mural to Spain until after Franco’s death.

Reina Sofia is one of three major art museums in the Museum Triangle on or near Paseo del Prado, a beautiful tree-lined boulevard dominated by The Prado Museum and extraordinary early 20th-century palace hotels: the Ritz and the Westin Palace.

The Prado houses extraordinary works by artists like Goya, El Greco, Velazquez, Titian, Rubens, and Van Dyck. Nearby, the Thyssen-Bornemisza is a private museum displaying Italian, German, and Dutch masters—favorites like Chagall, Renoir, Klee, and Van Gogh—and even works from the Hudson River School. Nearby, there are exhibits at the gorgeous Palacio de Cibeles, where the rooftop offers amazing city views. It’s also fun to have a drink on the rooftop of the ME hotel on Plaza de Santa Ana. Madrid’s architecture also lures visitors to make it the home base of a Jewish heritage vacation. It’s a city with 17th-century Hapsburg architecture near the Plaza Mayor, ornate 18th- and 19th-century buildings during the Bourbon reign, and early 20th-century opulence along the vibrant Gran Via. And, there’s lots to do: the Rastro, a Sunday morning market at Puerta del Sol, designer boutiques along Calle Serrano, the gardens of Buen Retiro, and restaurants and galleries galore.

From Madrid, it’s easy to visit smaller cities where vestiges of the once vibrant Jewish community survive.

Traveling on day trips via high-speed AVE trains is an easy and comfortable way to go, luggage-free.

uring a speech at a Mount Vernon shul reported in last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewish Star, former Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman tried to reassure the Jewish community about Hillary Clintonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Israel credentials. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As for Clinton,â&#x20AC;? he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;you can point to times when sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done things about Israel that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll wonder about, but overall, certainly when I worked with her most closely when she was a senator from New York, she had pretty strong positive feelings about Israel.â&#x20AC;?

Lieberman is correct about Ms. Clintonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Senate career. But except for the time she needed New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewish voting bloc, Hillary Clinton has never been pro-Israel.

Negative reports about Hillary and Israel even predate her marriage to Bill Clinton.

For example, on page 49 of the book â&#x20AC;&#x153;American Evita,â&#x20AC;? Christopher Anderson wrote that while at Yale, Ms. Clinton told friends of her â&#x20AC;&#x153;sympathyâ&#x20AC;? toward the PLO and her admiration of Yasser Arafat: â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Arafat made his famous appearance before the U.N. General Assembly in November 1974, wearing his revolutionary uniform and his holster on his hip, Bill â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;was outraged like everybody else,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; said a Yale Law School classmate. But not Hillary, who tried to convince Bill that Arafat was a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;freedom ďŹ ghterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; trying to free his people from their Israeli â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;oppressorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;?

On page 50, the author relates a 1973 incident in which Hillary refused to enter a home because it had a menorah on its door and Bill Clinton explained to a friend that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hillaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really tight with the people in the PLO in New York. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re friends of hers, and she just doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel right about the menorah.â&#x20AC;?

As ďŹ rst lady, in May 1998, she became the ďŹ rst person attached to any presidential administration to call for a Palestinian State.

Think about that: In the two most anti-Israel Administrations before Obama â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the Carter and Bush #41 presidencies â&#x20AC;&#x201D; no one ever called for a Palestinian state. It took Hillary Clinton to â&#x20AC;&#x153;break the ice.â&#x20AC;?

In November 1999, on a state visit to the Middle East as ďŹ rst lady, Hillary attended a public speech by Yasser Arafatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife Suha.

She listened as Mrs. Arafat made the slanderous allegation that Israel was using poison gas to give Palestinian children cancer and was contaminating the water with â&#x20AC;&#x153;chemical materials.â&#x20AC;? She listened silently to a real-time translation, and then gave the terroristâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wife hug and kiss.

Many hours after the event, after a media furor put her on the spot for what was viewed as a political faux pas, Mrs. Clinton called on all sides to refrain from â&#x20AC;&#x153;inďŹ&#x201A;ammatory rhetoric and baseless accusations.â&#x20AC;?

She included Israel even though her leaders made no such accusations.

Hillary never denounced the monstrous lies uttered by Yasser Arafatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife in her presence. Years later she attempted a feeble excuse â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that the translator screwed up.

Before her tenure in the State Department, Bill and Hillary Clinton made mega dollars from their extensive involvement with Dubai, a leader in the movement to boycott Israel and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hong Kongâ&#x20AC;? of the terrorist world. I personally learned about Dubai last year when the daughter of a friend of our family got married there. We checked after we received the invitation and learned that anyone with a passport that displayed they once traveled to Israel would not be allowed into the country. Bill and Hilary are major friends of Dubai, to the point where the Clinton Foundation has established Dubai Study

departments in universities in the U.S. and London. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked hard at granting legitimacy to this Jew-hating, terrorist-supporting nation.

The Clintons also had a connection to what was, back then, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest exporter of terrorism, Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Royal Family donated $10,000,000 to the Clinton Library. uring her Senate years, Ms. Clinton became a vocal supporter of Israel (she needed New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewish vote). But one of her ďŹ rst actions after leaving the Senate and becoming Secretary of State was to ignore a standing deal with Israel and call for the end of the construction of new homes in existing settlement neighborhoods.

Clintonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demand for a building freeze in existing settlement communities broke an agreement made between the U.S. and Israel during the Bush administration. Elliot Abrams, who negotiated the agreement for the United States, said Ms. Clintonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contention that there was no such agreement is simply false.

The source, a senior diplomat with inside knowledge of the Netanyahu-Clinton meetings on the issue, said Clinton made commitments when talking to Netanyahu, but later slipped out of her commitments by claiming that she had not been speaking on behalf of President, and Obama in the end did not give his approval. n 2011, speaking at the at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, part of the liberal Brookings Institute, Clinton trashed Israel by expressing concern for the Jewish stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social climate in the wake of limitations regarding female singing in the IDF and gender segregation on public transportation.

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton demanded the â&#x20AC;&#x153;settlementâ&#x20AC;? freeze in 2009 and was quickly backed by Obama. What she perceived as a minor concession (a â&#x20AC;&#x153;settlementâ&#x20AC;? freeze including no new housing units in existing communities) was for Israel a grave sacriďŹ ce. For all intents and purposes Clinton was telling Israeli parents that their married children could no longer live in their neighborhoods.

The Palestinians immediately seized upon the Hillary-created settlement issue. Seeing an opportunity to avoid talking, they used the administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demands to make a â&#x20AC;&#x153;settlementâ&#x20AC;? freeze a precondition to further talks even though there were negotiations and construction going on simultaneously before Hilary became Secretary of State.

In August 2009 Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a ten-month â&#x20AC;&#x153;settlementâ&#x20AC;? freeze. It was approved by the cabinet and implemented on Nov. 25, 2009, and was to run till Sept. 25, 2010. Despite pressure from the United States, the Palestinians refused to join any talks the ďŹ rst 9-plus months of the freeze; they did not come to the negotiation table till September 2010, three weeks before the freeze ended.

As the end of the construction halt approached, the U.S. began to negotiate with Israel to extend the freeze. Based on their experience with Clinton denying the deal negotiated by Elliot Abrams during the Bush Administration, Israel demanded that any proposal be presented in writing, as any oral deal with Clinton and the Obama administration was worth only the paper on which is was printed.

The written offer never came, apparently

complaints were based on false information.

Clinton referred to the decision of some IDF soldiers to leave an event where female soldiers were singing; she said it reminded her of the situation in Iran. It did? Wow! In Iran the women would have been lashed or executed. In Israel they were allowed to sing, and the people who felt it was against their religious beliefs were allowed to walk out. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it! Most senior ofďŹ cers in the IDF supported the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right to sing. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called religious freedom.

In her book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hard Choices,â&#x20AC;? Clinton included some anti-Israel passages: â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we left the city and visited Jericho, in the West Bank, I got my ďŹ rst glimpse of life under occupation for Palestinians, who were denied the dignity and self-determination that Americans take for grantedâ&#x20AC;? (p. 302).

She said nothing about terrorism, such as blowing up buses ďŹ lled with school children, nothing about the fact that during the presidency of her husband, Yassir Arafat turned down a deal that (according to Bill Clinton) would have given him about 97% of what he wanted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The sticking point would be Jerusalem.

East Jerusalem had been captured along with the West bank in 1967, and Palestinians dreamed of one day establishing the capital of their future state thereâ&#x20AC;? (p. 317).

This was another statement showing Ms. Clintonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bias. Israel didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t capture Jerusalem; Jordan did in 1948. Jews were the majority of the Jerusalem population from 1844 through the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 when they were kicked out by Jordan. In fact, Muslims were the third largest religion in the city until about 1890.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;There has been nearly a decade of terror, arising from the second intifada, which started in September 2000. About 1,000 Israelis were killed and 8,000 wounded in terrorist attacks from September 2000 to February 2005. Three times as many Palestinians were killed and thousands more were injured in the same periodâ&#x20AC;? (p. 308).

Like many who are anti-Israel Hillary draws a false equivalency between the terrorist attacks on Israel and Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attempts to defend herself. To maintain her ridiculous logic, the U.S. should be chastised because more al Qaeda terrorists died than Americans were killed on 9/11/01.

More evidence of Hillaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anti-Israel feelings were seen in some of her recently released emails. Most of the media coverage of the emails from her close friend Sidney Blumenthal are about his recommendations on Libya. However, Blumenthal also sent emails about Israel; some of them consisted of forwarding articles from his anti-Semitic son, writer Max Blumenthal. Others were recommendations of policy, generally onesided, describing Israel as the oppressor. As reported by NRO: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Blumenthal sent dozens of e-mails advising Clinton on Israel in 2010. Before her March speech at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Blumenthal sent Clinton a breathless article from left-wing Israeli writer Uri Avnery accusing the Netanyahu government of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;starting a rebellionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; against the United States and defending interests that diverge from Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I have to speak to AIPAC tomorrow,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Clinton responded. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and should I â&#x20AC;&#x201D; use this [sic]?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Blumenthal promised to send another memo the next day.â&#x20AC;?

In his follow-up email, Blumental â&#x20AC;&#x153;instructed Clinton to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hold Bibiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feet to the ďŹ reâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. [and suggested that Clinton] â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;remind [AIPAC] in as subtle but also direct a way as you can that it does not have a monopoly over American Jewish opinion. Bibi is stage managing U.S. Jewish organizations (and neocons, and the religious right, and whomever else he can muster) against the administration. AIPAC itself has become an organ of the Israeli right, speciďŹ cally Likudâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a May 31 email entitled â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Several observations on the Israeli raid,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Blumenthal blames â&#x20AC;Ś Netanyahuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family inferiority complex for his decision to launch a raid on the so-called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Gaza Flotilla,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; a group of ships seeking to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza,â&#x20AC;? the NRO report continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Bibi desperately seeks his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approbation and can never equal his dead brother,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Blumenthal wrote.

He then hinted that the raid was deliberately orchestrated to kill the peace process and humiliate President Obama before his scheduled visit with the prime minister. Clinton forwarded the message to Jake Sullivan, her deputy chief of staff at the State Department with the comment â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;FYI and I told you soâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;? ow Hillary is running for president, campaigning on the basis that she is a friend of Israel and her former colleagues in the senate such as Joe Lieberman are giving her cover.

But the truth is, as Secretary of State she was the foreign policy architect for the most anti-Israel president since the rebirth of Israel in 1948. It was a policy which reďŹ&#x201A;ected views she has held her entire life. A belief she put on hold during the nine-year period where she ran for and held the ofďŹ ce of senate from New York.

I feel bad for Lieberman, who is a good man. As a lifelong Democrat he is facing a tough decision in 2016. No matter who wins the Democratic nomination, if he votes for his party, he is voting for someone who is opposed to the Jewish state.

With the guidance of an inďŹ&#x201A;uential Ohio Jewish businessman and Republican activist, the late Gordon Zacks, Kasich made his ďŹ rst visit to Israel shortly after being elected to Congress in the 1980s. Kasich went on to take up the issue of persecuted Soviet Jewry by helping advocate for the release of famed refusenik Natan Sharansky, the current Jewish Agency for Israel chairman, from Soviet prison.

Kasich for America said in a statement that the U.S.-Israel relationship â&#x20AC;&#x153;is one of our most important [relationships] because of the role it plays in advancing our shared national interests and helping stabilize what is a very tough neighborhood of the world.

It is also mutually beneďŹ cial to our economies and is a reďŹ&#x201A;ection of our shared values.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support for Israel and engagement with its leaders goes back decades and reďŹ&#x201A;ects his fundamental belief that supporting Israel is simply the right thing to do,â&#x20AC;? Kasich for America said, adding, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friends will always disagree and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s okay, but friends also extend one another the courtesy of disagreeing in private and supporting one another in public, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the approach that the governor will bring to all of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important allied relationships.â&#x20AC;?

Kasich came out strongly against last summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Obama administration-brokered nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers. Even in his current capacity as a state governor, rather than a member of Congress, Kasich personally attended Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much-discussed March 2015 speech to Congress in opposition of the emerging deal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Netanyahu spoke to Congress, John cleared his calendar and made the trip to DC to support Bibi,â&#x20AC;? Kastan said.

Kasich said he believes the U.S. should have walked away from the negotiations with Iran, like Reagan did for talks with the Soviet Union in the 1980s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just remember Reagan in Reykjavik (Icelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital), where [Soviet leader Mikhail] Gorbachev said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Look, get rid of all nuclear weapons,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and I remember Reagan getting back in the car and saying, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;No, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not gonna do thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;,â&#x20AC;? Kasich told Fox News last July.

Kastan believes that Kasichâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support for Israel is sincere and deeply personal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is not just important to observe what is in Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head, but what is in his heart,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sure, he supports Israel because it is good for America. But, he also believes there can be no light between the U.S. and Israel because of the shared values between the two countries. He has a record of over 35 years of unwavering support for the Jewish state.â&#x20AC;?

OJCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Beigelman said Jewish voters can ďŹ nd â&#x20AC;&#x153;common groundâ&#x20AC;? with Kasich, the type of leader who â&#x20AC;&#x153;deďŹ es labels.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;From expanding healthcare to school choice, to protecting the dignity of Holocaust survivors, to helping those in need get a hand up, to containing Iranâ&#x20AC;Śthere are many areas [in which] independent-minded voters, including Jewish voters, could ďŹ nd common ground with him,â&#x20AC;? Beigelman said.

They also describe the values that Ohio Jews believe are embodied by their stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s governor. But will Jewish voters and other voters nationwide take notice?

In an election that has seen the stumbling of traditional â&#x20AC;&#x153;establishmentâ&#x20AC;? candidates and the spreading of increasingly partisan messages on both sides, could Kasich be the type of independentminded moderate leader who might be a feasible and electable alternative to the populist platforms of Senator Bernie Sanders and billionaire businessman Donald Trump?

Kasich is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;true conservativeâ&#x20AC;? who has always been â&#x20AC;&#x153;true to the [Republican] partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s core principles of reducing the size and scope of the federal government, tackling problems at the state and local level, and a commitment to a strong defense,â&#x20AC;? said Brad Kastan, senior vice president and managing director with the Raymond James & Associates ďŹ nancial advisory ďŹ rm in Columbus, Ohio, and a close friend and adviser to Kasich for more than 35 years.

At the same time, Kasich is someone who â&#x20AC;&#x153;deeply cares about Americans who are ďŹ nancially challenged, disabled, or who suffer with an addiction or mental illness,â&#x20AC;? Kastan said.

rior to describing each of the garments of the priests, the Torah tells us, “These are the vestments that they shall make: a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, a knitted tunic, a turban, and a sash. Make them sacred vestments for Aaron and his sons so that they will be able to be priests to Me.” (28:4) Every Jew who went to day school or yeshiva, or who simply studies the parsha, knows that a regular kohen wears four garments, and the kohen gadol wears four additional

garments for a total of eight garments. And yet, this preview summary only mentions six garments, leaving out the pants and the tzitz (forehead plate).

And so, the obvious question: Why are the pants and tzitz left out?

One could suggest that the pants are obvious. Their make-up is not described in this chapter, as the verse simply says “Also make linen pants to cover their nakedness, reaching from their waists to their thighs.” (28:42) Even in their placement in the instructions, they seem an afterthought after “Place these [vestments] on Aaron and his sons. Then anoint them, and install them, sanctifying them to be priests to Me.” (28:41) However, while the instructions for the tunic, turban and sash precede that seemingly

final instruction as to how the garments are to be used, they are each listed in the introductory verse, even though their instructions are all in one verse! “Knit the tunic out of linen.

[Also] make the turban out of linen and an embroidered sash.” (28:39) The tzitz, on the other hand, has three verses dedicated to its instruction (28:36-38); it is certainly not an afterthought.

Ibn Ezra notes the possibility that the pants are obvious, as everyone wears undergarments. And that the tzitz, while part of the count of the kohen gadol’s vestments, is not really a garment.

More practically, Chizkuni suggests that the pants and the tzitz are included in the words “Make them sacred vestments” from 28:4, while he also notes that the pants don’t go in

a “makom kavod,” in a place of honor on the body. Baal haTurim combines these teachings of Ibn Ezra and Chizkuni, while Or haChaim says the six vestments listed are all of equal holiness, while the tzitz is higher than all, on account of it being made out of gold and having G-d’s name on it, while the pants, owing to their placement, is on a lower level than the other garments.

In fact, Rabbenu Bachaye notes that the pants are the only garments for which the kohen did not get assistance in putting on (28:41, 29:5) because the pants are a private matter while the other garments are what the people are instructed to place on the kohanim.

The Talmud notes in Arachin 16a that each vestment of the priests helps bring atonement for sins related to where is placed on the body, or some other sin thematically related to it in the Bible.

Utilizing the direction set in motion by the Talmud, we’ll conclude with a teaching from Kli Yakar, to hopefully understand a little more clearly.

According to the Talmud, the tzitz brings atonement for brazenness, while the pants provide atonement for sins of a sexual nature.

Kli Yakar argues that the tzitz provides atonement for the sins of a sexual nature as well. The pants, which are private and not seen, atone for the private sins of individuals.

The tzitz, on the other hand, must bring atonement for the brazen nature of sexual sins done in public. He notes that the Talmud may be referring to a basic sin of brazenness, but he thinks the connection made between the pants and tzitz is too much to be overlooked, and not appreciated for this deeper message.

Perhaps the lesson for the kohanim is also for the people. Of course, a kohen who represents the people in their service of G-d is advised to remember the significance attached to his undergarments, as per the Talmudic message to him, as well is the kohen gadol to recall on an even higher level what his responsibility is — not only to his kohen brethren but to all of the nation of Israel which he serves — to be exceedingly humble and cognizant of the role he plays as the messenger of the people.

But the pants and tzitz being grouped together might also be a reminder of the message associated with the other tzitz of the Torah — the tzitzit. The Torah tells us in the paragraph of tzitzit, that seeing them will remind, “You to not stray after your heart and eyes, which [in the past] have led you to immorality” (Bamidbar 15:39). Maybe, at least for men who wear tzitzit, the tzitzit, which are seen when put on and are otherwise often tucked into the pants, can play the role of the tzitz and the pants of the kohanim, to help us overcome sins of brazenness and immorality, whether committed in public, through the things we see on the street, or committed in private, in whatever that means to people, as our hearts and eyes are trained to use the tzitzit as guides to proper service of G-d.

Ttzitzit, considered as the tzitz and pants of kohanim, can help us overcome sins of brazenness.

he second Beit Hamikdash was destroyed over 1,900 years ago. Thereafter, with prophetic insight, Chazal established the blessing of Boneh Yerushalayim (Rebuild Jerusalem) in the Shemoneh Esrei. This enactment had a very direct purpose — to maintain strong and everlasting feelings in our hearts for the rebuilding of the Holy Temple. This theme is repeated, as well, in the Birkat Hamazon with the selfsame goal in mind. In sum, we must never forget the past glory of the Beit Hamikdash in order that we may long for its imminent rebuilding.

Beyond question, Chazal did their best to keep the anticipation of a soon-to-be rebuilt Beit Hamikdash alive in the hearts and minds of our people. Yet, even with these daily reminders, many Jews feel distant from the parshiot in the Torah that deal with the construction of the Mishkan (the portable desert sanctuary), the specifics of the Bigdei Kahunah (special garments of the kohanim), and the extensive details of the korbanot (offerings in the Holy Temple).

For many, these topics remain closed books that are distant from their lives and beyond understanding. Indeed, as early as the 12th century, the Rambam decried the widespread lack of attention to the study of the korbanot, and hence, ignorance of this subject matter, in his time: “The subject of the korbanot, because of our ever-growing number of sins, has already been abandoned. No one even bothers to study their laws except for a very small minority of people.

Moreover, their subject matter is virtually ignored as a topic of study (v’ain inyanav nizkarim techufot lifnei ha’adam) — which would have allowed them to be remembered — even though one has already seen them. In addition, no one reviews them since there is no practical reason to do so. Moreover, no one bothers to ask questions regarding any aspect of this subject. As a result, the Torah scholar and the ignoramus are equal in their ignorance of these laws. Then, too, the majority of Torah students know nothing about the korbanot, even in regards to that which is explicitly stated in the many verses of the Torah.” (From Introduction to Tractate Zevachim, translation my own.)

In the early part of the last century, the great Chafetz Chaim echoed the Rambam’s words in the introduction to his work, Torah Ohr: “We see, as a result of our many sins, that the study of this entire Order of the Mishnah [i.e.

Kodashim] is completely ignored. It is nearly impossible to find anyone who studies it. Even someone who studies it does not view it with any depth (except for one in a thousand from the most select of the generation). Moreover, even someone who studies the entire Talmud on a page-by-page basis does not apply himself to the depths of his cognitive abilities to know the subject matter and halachic decisions with true clarity. Instead, such an individual is satisfied with a passing knowledge of this material, as if he were merely reading Parashat Hakorbanot.”

(Translation my own) It is clear from the writings of these Torah giants that these laws need to become a focus of study and returned to their former glory — not by the few, but by all of klal Yisrael.

With the above thoughts in mind, I would like to analyze the Urim and Thumim that were placed in the Choshen Hamishpat (Decision Breastplate). Our parasha devotes no less than 15 pasukim to an intricate and extensive description of the Choshen Hamishpat (Shemot 28:1529). At the conclusion of this passage, the Torah commands the kohen gadol to wear this garment as a permanent remembrance before G-d: “Aaron will thus carry the names of Israel’s sons on the Decision Breastplate over his heart when he comes into the sanctuary. by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan) The Urim and Thumim are placed into the Chosen Hamishpat to render judgment: “Place the Urim and Thumim in the Decision Breastplate, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he comes before G-d. Aaron will then carry the

decision-making device for the Israelites before G-d at all times.” (Ibid., 28:30) While there are a variety of opinions as to how to understand what the Urim and Thumim were, two parallel Talmudic passages clarify their purpose: It was taught in a baraita: “Why were they named Urim and Thumim?” “Urim” [from the Hebrew ohr, light], because they enlightened the Jewish people. “Thumim,” because they helped perfect the path before the Jewish people. This means that when the Jewish people were perfect and complete (temimin) they would show the Jewish people the [correct] path [upon which to tread]. (Talmud Yerushalmi, Yoma 7:3) It was taught in a baraita: “Why were they named Urim and Thumim?” “Urim,” since they enlightened their words, “Thumim,” since they completed [perfected] their words. (Talmud Bavli, Yoma 73b)

Rabbi Baruch Halevi Epstein, in his trailblazing Torah commentary, Torah Temimah, explained these Talmudic portions by noting that a reciprocal relationship obtained between G-d and the Jewish people pertaining to the accuracy of the information revealed by the Urim and Thumim. When we acted with wholeheartedness in our relationship with G-d, the answers we would receive were absolutely true. When we failed to do so, however, the responses from the Urim and Thumim were incomplete. As such, the Urim and Thumim effectively shaped our behavior: “This means that [the Urim and Thumim] taught the Jewish people to be pure in their behaviors and ethical characteristics. Absent this quality, the answer that we would receive from the Urim and Thumim would lack clarity and precision.”

Eternal message of Urim, Thumim

and all the glory that they entailed. Nonetheless, I believe that the Urim and Thumim can still serve as our guide, albeit, in their absence. In my estimation, they continue to teach us a vital message, namely, the obligation to undertake and perform all mitzvot and ma’asim tovim (laudatory acts) truly l’shame shamayim (with wholehearted intent to serve G-d and bring honor to His name). As Antignos taught us in Pirkei Avot: Antignos the man from Socho … was known for saying: “Do not be like the servants who minister to their master on the condition that they will receive a reward. Instead, be like those servants who serve their master without the expectation of receiving a reward. And may the awe of Heaven be upon you.” (1:3) May Hashem give us the wisdom and spiritual strength to live righteous lives dedicated to honoring and sanctifying His name through our words and deeds. Moreover, may our generation witness the coming of the Mashiach and the rebuilding of the Beit Hamikdash soon and in our days. V’chane yihi ratzon.

JEWISH STAR Schools Pink Day at SKA aids Sharsheret There were pink banners, pink posters, pink streamers and a sea of pink-wearing students on Pink Day, last Wednesday at the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls.

To show their support for breast and ovarian cancer awareness, SKA students sold pink donuts and pink accessories and offered “maniCURES.” As part of a tri-state initiative, monies raised went to help fund the vital programs and services of Sharsheret, an organization created to provide support and direction for Jewish women with these cancers.

During club period, the girls were honored to hear from Mrs. Esther Zeidman, mother of Rivkie ’13 and Malkie ’16, who shared her incredible story of recovery from breast cancer. Mrs. Zeidman’s inspirational words of hashgacha prati and emunah made Pink Day at SKA especially meaningful and highlighted the need for awareness and education as Ashkenazi Jews are 10 times more at risk for hereditary cancers than the general population.

HANC HS Experiencing a day

Students of Shulamith School for Girls had the time of their lives last week, as they engaged in some serious hands-on learning!

Under the guidance of Steven Frankel, of Hamidrasha L’Yeda Hamikdash, the girls each added a “brick” to a magnificent full-scale model of the Beit Hamikdash. Using the model and a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Frankel displayed details of the mikdash and, by using a very small figure of a kohein, illustrated how exceptionally magnificent and impressively colossal the Beit Hamikdash was.

The program was a meaningful and inspiring way to begin chodesh Adar.

Eighth grade girls from various incoming schools took part in the annual “Day in the Life at HANC High School” last Thursday, providing our applicants with the unique opportunity to see what a day at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County’s high school is really like.

The girls attended classes in limudei kodesh and general studies that showcased HANC’s rigorous academic program. Highlights of the day included classes in Chumash, Navi, and Women and Mitzvot, as well as interactive lessons in history, science and Art.

Lower school principal Joy Hammer said that parents, keen to visualize what’s going on in technology at the school, are always welcome to drop in. “They won’t see a gimmick that we could say ties into math,” she said. “We figure out where math intersects with real life.”

Hammer used as an example a robot drawing a circle: “Once they figure out the relationship between the robot moving, the students prove their hypothesis by writing an equation describing the angle of the robot’s turn, divided by 360 degrees, divided by the distance that the robot goes forward, times the circumference.” The next question she asked the youngsters was how many rotations it would take for the robot to travel 10 meters. “Yes, we are doing this in lower school,” she said.

To get lower school students familiar with computer programming, they are introduced to logic and problem-solving when coding steps are acted out through balls and arrows placed an a carpet of colored squares in the

center of the computer lab. Morah Elaine Gross’ second grade students are well-versed in what an algorithm is: a list of steps that allow a task to be completed. “We use the example of brushing your teeth,” she said.

“When a machine follows that set of tasks, it is called a program.”

Edit Boral works with students on the “3Cs, which are necessary for any success in life: collaborative work, creativity, and critical thinking.” Thanks to her ingenuity, HAFTR’s fourth graders teamed up with high school counterparts to create a unique centerpiece for the school’s Evening of the Arts — a Kandinsky-style mural painted in electricity-conducting paint that lies atop circuitry they’ve built. Thanks to accompanying software created by HAFTR High School seniors, when any part of the mural is touched, it will emit a musical tone keyed to its color; Kandinsky theorized that every color has its own sound (yellow is middle C played by trumpet, for example).

“Nobody has done anything like this, except perhaps MOMA,” Boral said. “The students truly claim ownership of their learning with a project like this.”

Gross pointed out that HAFTR’s system is not to simply hand out an iPad to every student, but rather to carefully choose where technology fits in the curriculum and then use it judiciously. “We use tech as an enhancement to learning, not the main attraction. We are not what’s referred to today as a ‘blended learning’ school; we’re a school, and technology has to fit properly teacher by teacher in each lesson.”

The school is committed to providing adequate professional development time for teachers to train in the best ways to use apps in the classroom, he said.

Baruch Noy, previously a classroom teacher in both general and Judaic studies, is now the ed tech specialist for grades 3 through 5.

He asks teachers where they see tech helping with their teaching goals. “Then I can find and show them tools that can support what they want to accomplish,” he said.

In Rabbi Rodney Weiss’ fifth grade Talmud class, each test he gives utilizes three apps: Zaption, with interactive videos; Flipquiz, which sets up a Jeopardy-style game; and Quizlet, which creates flash cards.

The ed tech expansion is rapidly moving

throughout all grades, and next up is a new technology lab in the old high school gym.

This will incorporate maker space (where students tinker, design and create), a film studio with a green screen, 3-D printers that will be used to learn about neural synapses and the Mishkan, a computer numerical control router and fabrication lab.

Jay Aaron teaches AV to high school students, who live-streamed the Satrin basketball tournament over a four-day weekend earlier this year. It got over 15,000 views. “It was a student-oriented project that worked well for the kids educationally,” Aaron said.

The high school is also creating an entrepreneurial initative with Israeli company FreshBiz, which teaches students business skills through game-based learning. This partnership will result in a high-end curriculum to teach business skills to the upper grades.

Gross summed up HAFTR’s mission by saying that education tech “is another way we can be a light unto the nations. Not only are we people of the book, we are also people of the iPad. We want to make education integral to Jewish identity and survival.”

HAFTR has partnered with several corporations and has received grants to cover the costs of all the hardware and software the school is now using, so this tech expansion has not caused tuition to rise.

or explore the halachic solutions for agunot, women whose often recalcitrant husbands refused to give them a get. The Rebbe would sit by the bereaved family or broken agunah and share their tears.

To be sure, Judaism needs both of these leaders, and obviously every Rav needs to be a little bit of a Rebbe, while every Rebbe needs to have enough Torah knowledge to function as a Rav when necessary.

Sometimes in Jewish history personalities have succeeded in being both Rav and Rebbe. (As an example, the last Lubavitcher Rebbe, who was a towering authority of Jewish knowledge and sources but also felt the pain of every Jew and every person, was both a Rav and a Rebbe — but I do not believe it was an accident that he was known as the Rebbe).

We are living in an orphaned generation. With all of our blessings, including the privilege of seeing the State of Israel reborn and the return of the Jewish people to their homeland, we do not seem to have the towering personalities we once had.

I grew up in the shadows of Rav Moshe Feinstein, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Yoshe Ber Soleveitchick (The Rov), Rav Aharon Kotler, among other great Torah giants. And I was privileged to study under the tutelage of Rav Aharon Lichtenstein (who for me was the ultimate Rav) and Rav Amital (who became my Rebbe) both towering Torah giants.

And as a boy our shul Rav and my rosh yeshiva, Rav Shlomo Tzvi HaKohein Riskin, was both Rav and Rebbe, and in my parents’ home, his halachic decisions were final, and his advice was sacrosanct.

Today, in our Modern Orthodox dati leumi, ask someone whom he or she relies on for psak (halachic rulings) and they will often respond: “It depends.” Ask someone if there is anyone they truly consider their Rebbe and you will often get a blank look. And maybe that is because a real Rebbe, just like a true Rav, should be someone who, like Moshe and Aharon, is purely invested in the mission. For a true leader and educator, what matters is the bigger picture — what does Hashem want, is this good for the Jewish people.

So when Hashem thinks Aharon is the man for the job, Moshe naturally understands that as well.

Forty years ago, Yanosh Ben Gal was willing to risk his reputation for the sake of the country and people he loved. He was one man in the right place at the right time. Today more than ever, we need more such leaders.

Continued from page 7 ing any blame to Aharon himself. And when Moshe 80 days later returns with the second tablets (ibid. 34:30) the Torah describes Aharon and the entire Jewish people seeing Moshe’s radiant face, without a hint of angst or jealousy.

Rav Yoshe Ber Soleveitchik, in a magnificent article reprinted in English in Rav Moshe Besdin’s “Reflections of the Rav”) suggests that Moshe and Aharon represent the two primary educational leadership roles in Judaism, and while they do not compete with each other, they are in fact very different.

Moshe finds himself atop Mount Sinai; speaking directly to G-d and far away from the people when the Sin of the Golden calf occurs. Aharon on the other hand is below, right in the thick of it all. When Moshe comes down from the mountain his face glows and he needs to wear a veil; he removes himself from the camp and has a somewhat distant, and even authoritarian relationship, with the people. Aharon on the other hand, even at the beginning of his journey into the priesthood, is always “amongst the people.” Indeed the Mishna in Pirkei Avot exhorts us to “be of the students of Aharon, Ohev Shalom ve’rodef shalom” (he who loves and pursues peace). And Jewish tradition tells us he would make great efforts to resolve arguments by befriending both of the conflicting sides and encouraging their rapprochement. he people were in awe of Moshe, who represented a direct connection to G-d.

But they loved Aharon, who represented the intimate connection and brotherly love of the Jewish people. Indeed, Moshe brought the Torah down from Heaven, which represents the eternal and irreplaceable tradition from G-d, while Aharon taught the Jews how to live with a Torah life of love, meaning and harmony.

Suggests Rav Soleveitchik: Moshe represented the Rav, or Posek, the Torah authority who shares an uncompromising fealty and obedience to the word of G-d and the laws and mitzvot of the Torah. And Aharon represented the Rebbe whose love for every Jew inspired a love for Judaism and Hashem and for a Jewish way of life.

When you weren’t sure how to build an eiruv, or whether the chicken was kosher, you asked the Rav. But when you needed advice on how to make peace with your business partner, you came to the Rebbe.
