YI of Woodmere:

Solidarity dinner for Gush Katif Large crowds are expected at the Gush Katif Museum Dinner this Saturday night, March 9, to show solidarity with those expelled from Gush Katif and to protest any further expulsion plans. There have been reports in Israeli media ahead of United States President Barak Obama’s planned visit to Israel, of his attempt to push for withdrawal timetables for evacuating Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. “The upcoming dinner to benefit the Gush Katif Museum in Jerusalem will be an opportunity to protest any surrender of Jewish land and to demonstrate solidarity on behalf of a whole Israel – Yisrael HaShlaima,” said Sara Lehmann, of the Dinner committee. The dinner committee issued a statement that “the expulsion from Gush Katif is the clearest evidence that land surrendered by Israel will be used for the purpose of creating an additional space from which to spread terror to innocent civilians and ultimately to weaken and dominate Europe and the U.S. Continued on page 9

Turf war over # 6 School sale By Malka Eisenberg A classic battle of wills and interests between a big development corporation and grass roots community activists is playing out in the homes and streets of Woodmere as a business faces off with homeowners over the future of Lawrence School District 15’s Number Six School property. The 6.7-acre site with an 80,170 square foot building stands on the corner of Branch and Peninsula boulevards in Woodmere. The elementary school, built in 1963, was closed due to declining enrollment and has been vacant since March 2009. The sprawling, tan L-shaped twostory structure abuts its paddle ball courts, a grassy baseball field and a playground with climbing structures for children. The school board weighed bids for the property from Shulamith school, the Jewish Community Center, the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach and others, ultimately accepting the highest offer from Simone Development based in Mt. Vernon, New York, a commercial and residential real estate investment and development company. The company has plans to lease the

building to Mount Sinai Hospital for use as a multi-specialty medical practice. Four members of the school board, termed the real estate committee, reviewed the bids and presented their analysis to the seven-member board. On January 14th, the board voted to approve an agreement to sell the property, 4 to 2, one member was absent, to Simone, subject to a public referendum to be held on March 20th. If the sale is rejected, the process starts all over again and bids have to be resubmitted; new bids can be submitted as well. At a recent open meeting at the Lawrence Middle School, representatives of Simone development made its case, stating that the facility would be staffed by 60 physicians, from Mt. Sinai as well as recruited from the area. An advanced outpatient ambulatory care center would also occupy the renovated structure. They said that they have the funds for the purchase and that Mt. Sinai is a world-renowned health care provider. They also plan a clinical lab, diagnostic imaging, urgent Continued on page 3

With the approach of Rosh Chodesh Nisan, the Young Israel of Woodmere is once again inviting members of the Five Towns Jewish community to have their Tefillin and Mezuzot checked, check clothing for Sha’atnez, properly dispose of Sheimot and donate food items. The program, started at Rabbi Aaron Glatt’s initiative, has been ongoing for about 20 years. “It’s always been in the Young Israel of Woodmere,” said Rabbi Glatt. “It’s a community event. All the shuls participate in it as cosponsors.” He stressed that various poskim (rabbinic sources) say that the month of Nissan is an “opportune time to check for chametz (leaven) inside of a person as well as chametz in general,” to verify if the miztvot are not being done properly. He cited that it is an “opportune time to check mezuzot and Tefillin and for Sha’atnez (clothing with a mix of wool and linen) and Shemot (sacred writings that can no longer be used).” He said that they have this program every year around Rosh Chodesh Nisan. For the convenience of the community, it is generally held on a Sunday. This year it is being held before Rosh Chodesh which comes out this year on Tuesday March 12th. “We don’t want it too close to Pesach with the immediate stress of Pesach,” he said. “The last few years others have added on to it a food or clothing drive. It’s a beautiful additional thing.” He noted that the different vendors charge a nominal fee and it’s an opportunity for “one stop shopping” and it reminds people to do it. He pointed out that Tefillin and Mezuzot should be checked twice every seven years. They will have “highly qualified sofrim (scribes), expert sha’atnez testers, and appropriate disposal of Shemot.” He suggested that individuals should “ask your local rav what needs to be disposed of” for Continued on page 8

Continued from page 1 care and walk-in treatment and that the facility will be open morning to night seven days a week. The fields will be paved to provide 450 spaces for cars and the entrances on Church and Ibsen will be closed. The playground will be moved and expanded, they said. One of the representatives, Dr. Simone Schwartz, stressed the convenience of coordinated comprehensive care. They also said that about $1 million in property taxes will be paid annually with 70% going to the school district, aside from the $12.5 million purchase price. Opponents to the sale have been holding town hall type meetings in homes in the neighborhood and have organized their efforts to halt the sale. In a part of the community still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, with some residents not yet back in their homes, some feel that this is the second strike against their property values. But most state that their complaints represent a last ditch effort to stop the erosion of their quality of life. The area is mostly residential, with homes abutting the school around the property’s perimeter. “We are trying to protect the community and the future for our children,” said Joshua Schein. He identified himself as “a concerned parent, a concerned citizen and one of the organizers of the Community Coalition of the Five Towns,” a group that states that they “oppose overdevelopment of the Number Six School.” He said that the CCFT was just “formally started…registered with the New York State Board of Elections as a political committee. It allows us to publicly speak out against this referendum.” “Our bottom line is our safety,” said Rachel Marks, an attorney who spoke at a meeting in a home in North Woodmere. She said that although the developer is making predictions of what it will be like, “anything can

change…there are no restrictions.” Others spoke of the increase in traffic. With a minimum of 60 doctors and predicting expansion to 100, each seeing upwards of four patients an hour, longer than anticipated waiting times would lead to an overflow of cars onto the adjoining streets. They predict a tremendous increase in traffic flow on an already congested street, Peninsula Boulevard, with delivery trucks, laboratory pick ups, service crews and salespeople. They cited the now quiet streets, Church and Ibsen, that will be disrupted and disturbed by a commercial development in a residential area on a property that has been used for more than two generations for playing ball by the community’s parents, children and grandchildren. They also point to additional expenses which would be incurred such as additional sewage, police and fire services. Residents worry that a commercial property will depress surrounding residential property values in an area still struggling from Hurricane Sandy’s damage. They are concerned that the sale agreement includes no binding agreement of any kind limiting the number of doctors, hours of operation or the size of this facility. They project that the additional tax revenue from this complex would only offset taxes by $35 per family. The attorney representing Simone Real Estate, Benjamin Weinstock, gave a figure of $100. Simone’s traffic consultant claimed that there would be no perceptible change in traffic flow in the area once the center opens, even if 256 patients an hour come to the medical center. “We see this as robbing our children of ball fields and open space,” said Schein. “The traffic will be a nightmare. It’s ruining the community that I care so much about. You have to do a cost/benefit analysis; the $35 against what we are losing. It’s shameful that the school board was entrusted with

this, and turns it over to a commercial developer. This harms our children.” Two women who said that they were in favor of the sale to ease their tax burden said that they were interested in hearing from the opposition and would like them to hold an open meeting to explain their stand. “There are so many unknowns,” said school board member Uri Kaufman, who voted against the sale. “The parents and taxpayers did not move to a commercial area, this is not what we moved here for.” He noted the importance of this vote. “This is the most important vote in 11 or 12 years,” he said, noting that even voting for a president is not as important since that changes every four years and this, once voted on to sell to the developer, will remain a commercial site. “It’s a unique community,” stressed Schein. “To see it [the community] change so dramatically for the worse is shameful. We have the opportunity to correct the mistakes of the school board and come out and vote it down.” The new hours for voting on March 20th are from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the four voting sites are: Lawrence Middle School, 195 Broadway, Lawrence; Number 2 School, 1

Opinion One Year Later and Still Missing Andrew Breitbart

I

t’s been a year since Andrew Breitbart passed away. During his much too short life (he passed away at 43), Breitbart was hated by the left because he helped create a movement on the right. Those who knew him still feel his loss. Bretibart’s number is still in my cell phone, his name is still in my Linkedin contacts and Facebook friends, and the spark of fire and passion he injected into everyone who ever had the pleasure of meeting him is still burning in my heart. Before his passing, I contributed two to three articles per week POLITICO to the growing BreitTO GO bart “empire.” I wasn’t part of Andrew’s inner circle of friends; we may have spoken a total of maybe 30 times (either in person or on the phone), yet I called him (and still call him) my friend. This was not some delusion of grandeur on my part. Andrew Breitbart made everyone he met feel Jeff Dunetz like they were the most important people in the world and a key component of his team. Allow me to give you an example: While on the publicity tour for his last book, Andrew appeared on the Hugh Hewitt show. Hewitt jokingly told Andrew of his disappointment that his name wasn’t in the acknowledgements. Piling on to a good joke, I tweeted Andrew saying Hewitt had no right to be in the acknowledgements, but as one of his most prolific contributors I should have been named and should have gotten some of his royalties on top of it. The very next day I received a phone call apologizing for not including me. He said he knew it was a joke

but wanted to make sure I wasn’t really upset. That was the Andrew Breitbart I knew; he always found time to make others feel important. Andrew urged us to be unafraid--to stand up to bullies no matter who they were or what their standing. He was the most fearless guy I ever knew, and he taught us to be fearless as long we had the power of truth behind us. When any of the team followed his advice and the bullies got angry, Andrew would step in front of us to take the bullet. One Saturday evening, after posting an article about the Jew-hating M.J. Rosenberg on Big Journalism the day before, I turned on my computer to find hundreds of twitter mentions on my account. Apparently a senior person at the Soros funded Media Matters for America had decided to call me a Jew-Basher. Realizing that I would not be online during the Sabbath, Andrew, and the entire Breitbart team, spent the day tweeting in my absence for my defense. Andrew Breitbart was the guy you wanted in the “foxhole” with you. And I was honored that he welcomed me into the ‘foxhole” with him (truth was--it wasn’t just me--everyone who was willing to get off his or her backside and fight for the truth was welcome into the foxhole). If you found yourself in a foxhole with Andrew, you would have to walk delicately around the large pile of cell phones with him; the guy was always working, texting, talking etc. Once, while on the phone with him as he drove down some California Highway, I heard a noise followed by his statement that he had to go because his other phone was ringing. HIS OTHER PHONE?!?!? IN A CAR!?!? Only Andrew. Breitbart was a bit crazy…. like a fox. He would intimidate progressive bullies simply because they wouldn’t know what he would do or say next. But, like Hamlet, it was all just an act. As a Jew, Andrew was a huge supporter of

Israel. One of his sites, Big Peace, was created expressly to cover Israel related issues. Andrew’s public speeches were nothing short of incredible. At some point during each appearance, it would seem that he had no idea what he was saying, that he was simply spewing some “stream of conciseness,” but in the end his speeches always made sense, proved some important point, rallied the “troops,” and was funny as all hell. Andrew saw himself as a protector of bloggers, tea partiers and all who were attacked by bullies--from either side of the aisle. He was a “lead, follow or get out of the way” type of person; most of us chose to follow because no other human being could stay ahead of his amazing energy. Breitbart was a multi-tasker. I am not talking about the kind of person who can work, watch TV and talk on the phone at the same time--that’s for amateurs. Andrew could talk about five different incredibly diverse topics simultaneously, not only keeping them straight, but he also would come up with brilliant ideas on how to tackle each topic. The last time I saw Andrew was at the bar on the last day of CPAC 2012. Sarah Palin had just finished her keynote address and the tired crew of Citizen Journalists was getting ready to go out and celebrate the three days of intense work just completed---all except for Breitbart. Andrew was holding court in the lounge of the hotel bar, discussing the news of the day with a group of college students who had attended CPAC. He wasn’t going anywhere until each questioner was satisfied. He wasn’t holding court because of a need to be adored by a big crowd; but because he really cared about the future of this country, wanted to create new citizen-journalists and wanted these students to understand what was going on around them. That’s the point the anti-Breitbart smear machine could never understand. Breitbart wasn’t working hard to promote politics or ego, he was motivated by his love for this

country, the truth, and for the future of his children. In a way it is ironic that Andrew died just before the Jewish holiday of Purim. What makes Purim special is there is no overt splitting of the sea-type miracle. The lesson is to have faith that our victory came from G-d even though he was “hidden” during Purim. To celebrate Purim, Jews wear masks and costumes to hide our faces the same way G-d did. Andrew Breitbart’s work was all about masks and hiding. He forced politicians and mass media figures to take off their masks-that spin and rhetoric covering so much of what citizens are still being told today. He fought hard to ensure that we would not be confused by the “happy-talk, everything is wonderful” costumes covering up the dangers that lay ahead for America. When Andrew passed away a year ago, the country lost a heroic warrior. I lost a mentor and a friend. This is a better country because of Andrew Breitbart and I am a better truth-seeker and person. I still miss him very much, as do all of his friends and family. May G-d continue to provide comfort to Andrew’s wife Susannah, their four kids and the rest of his friends and loved ones: HaMakom yenachem et’chem b’toch shar avay’lay Tzion vee’Yerushalayim. May Andrew Breitbart’s memory always be for a blessing. I miss you friend. Jeff Dunetz is the Editor/Publisher of the political blog “The Lid” (www.jeffdunetz.com). New user friendly Haggadah commentaries

O

nce again it is my pleasure to bring to your attention several Haggadah commentaries in English that I am certain will enrich both your Seders and your basic knowledge of Pesach purpose, history and ritual. This past year, Mosad HaRav Kook and the Halacha Education Center in Jerusalem published a new English Haggadah entitled, “Pesach Haggadah Shirat Miriam – Haggadah MiMekorah” for both Ashkenazim and Sefardim by Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon of Yeshivat Har Etzion. This commentary is among the most user friendly comprehensive Haggadot recently published for the English speaking public. In addition, it enjoys approbations from such rabbinic luminaries as Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein, Rabbi Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg, and Rabbi Simcha HaAlan Jay Gerber kohen Kook. The stellar organization of this work speaks for itself. Given the educational creds of its author, Rabbi Rimon, this volume serves as a virtual beit medrash of Pesach home ritual, dealing with just about every aspect of Haggadah related ritual and purpose, explained for all to comprehend. A sample of this organizational method can be demonstrated with how the struc-

ture of the Haggadah is explained. Utilizing both narrative and graphics, as well as detailed diagrams, Rabbi Rimon presents to us a markedly detailed explanation of both the purpose and reasoning behind just about every detail of the seder service. This introductory material should be mandated reading for all literate participants starting from Rosh Chodesh Nissan. Assimilating this material will go a long way toward giving the Haggadah a firmer grip upon the attention of most participants. An educated participant makes for a more attentive participant. This section is followed by a detailed section entitled “Preparations for the Seder,” starting with a detailed descriptive of the seder plate, going into unusual details about the cooked dishes, the types of meat used, a halachic definition of marror and charoset, including the appropriate admonitions concerning checking of the lettuce. The very placement of the seder plate on the table, the choreography in its handling and use during the service itself is given much attention. Even a veteran of prior seders will surely find much “new stuff” to be learned from Rabbi Rimon’s detailed descriptive. Consider the detailed explanations concerning the variant placements in the arrangement on the seder plate based upon the opinions of the Vilna Gaon, the Ari, z”l,

and the Rama, and the reasoned rationales behind these variants. Also, for your edification, there is a two page summary that brings together, in classic pedagogic method, all the prior details, giving this section its frame. “The Stages of the Seder” further reframes the seder ritual, reinforcing all the previous detail with the rubric of “kadeish u’rchatz.” Consider the two page graphs entitled, “Leaning” wherein we are first presented with five questions asking the participant: Why lean? Should one lean nowadays? When can one be more lenient nowadays? When must one lean? How does one lean? Detailed answers to each, in graph form, are forthcoming. This subject is further reinforced in a variant graphic and summary narrative on the next two pages. Similar graphic and textual methodology is employed with Motzi Matzah, Marror, Korech and Shulchan Orech. Hopefully, someday, these pages will be enhanced into posters for both classroom and adult educational use. Never has Jewish law been given a better demonstration as to its practical purpose and application as has been applied in this work. With this work, Rabbi Rimon has given new definition to the term, “user friendly.” Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon, Mosad HaRav Kook and the Halacha Education Center should be mighty proud of this work. Hopefully, someday soon, this methodology will be applied to our liturgy.

A timely reprise is in order for a mention of several excellent, previously reviewed Haggadas that were most favorably received by my many readers. The first is entitled, “The Schechter Haggadah: Art, History, and Commentary,” representing a joint collaborative effort by Dr. Joshua Kulp and Rabbi Prof. David Golinkin, both of Jerusalem. It brings together within one self-contained work, the entire Haggadah ritual framed by art representing a historical interpretation of the Pesach experience down through the ages from the Middle ages unto modern times. This is further supplemented by a section of detailed, extremely scholarly, historically based commentary that serves to supplement the halachically based commentary previously cited in Rabbi Rimon’s work. Another work of the same literary genre previously cited is “Haggadah of the Sages” [Carta, 2009] by Prof. Shmuel Safrai and Prof. Ze’ev Safrai. This work is an exquisitely compiled compendium of essays detailing the evolutionary process that led to the writing of the Haggadah. As with the other two previously cited books, this work, when taken together with the others, will surely give you a better and deeper appreciation of the Haggadah, its ritual and service. In addition, all three of these valued works will surely give you a better understanding of the place that the Exodus has in both the theology and history of our people. I am certain that the scholarship presented therein represents a perspective that is not yet taught in most of our secondary schools as experienced by most of you. Hopefully, some day, as this material gets to be further appreciated, this scholarship will increasingly find its way into our community schools and batei medrashim.

expulsion, spoke to him passionately about the plight of the Gush Katif refugees. Rivka Goldschmidt will be at the dinner, to recount her experiences and those of her neighbors. Rabbi Yosef Y. Jacobson will also be speaking on behalf of the Rabbis of the Crown Heights Synagogues. Multi-media displays will be shown about the lives of the Gush Katif residents. Guests of Honor for the evening include Rabbi Sholom Ber Drizin, Rabbi David Algaze, Assemblyman Dov Hikind, and Helen Freedman. The Dinner Committee is chaired by Dr. Paul Brody and includes many distinguished members of the Jewish community. Musicians YONI and Choni Milecki will be performing during the evening. An interview with Rachel Saperstein, one of the spokeswomen for the Gush Katif community, has just been circulated. In the interview, Rachel describes her frustration and disappointment in the government’s failure to act more quickly in enabling the still displaced persons to move into their permanent homes. The semi-annual AFSI Chizuk mission to Israel meets with the Sapersteins, Anita Tucker, and others each time they are in Israel. They saw the 21 ourishing communities before they were destroyed, and visited the temporary caravans in which most of the people have been living since 2005. They have also seen some of the new homes and new communities, all of which are developing very slowly. Since it was not just their homes that people saw destroyed by the demolition crews when the 10,000 residents were forcibly removed from Gush Katif, but entire communities and farms, with all that is involved, rebuilding is a laborious and costly exercise. To RSVP, or call in a contribution, please contact the Museum dinner committee by phone at 718-208-1770 or, mail your contribution payable to “Friends of Gush Katif Museumâ€?, 383 Kingston Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11213, Suite 155. Continued from page 1 A visit to this museum serves as a powerful educational tool to any visitor and conveys the message that the policy of surrendering land to people who continue to engage and abet terror is folly. The proffered desire to create a state cannot conceal the persistent hatred of Jews present in the Palestinian Authority as well as Hamas. Obama’s insistence for a timetable for withdrawal is a threat to the civilized world and refuted by the Gush Katif experience.â€? “The purpose of the Museum is to preserve the story of the horrors of the expulsion from Gush Katif for the speciďŹ c purpose of declaring NEVER AGAIN! Yet, demolitions have happened since and threaten to continue. We must protest against any such actions. A strong showing will send a strong message to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that Diaspora Jews and Christians will ďŹ ght demolition decrees and continue to stand up for our rightful claim to our Biblical Homeland.â€? A year ago the ďŹ rst Gush Katif Museum dinner was held at the Razag Ballroom in Brooklyn, NY. At the time, Rabbi Shalom Dov Wolpo, Founder and President of the Museum, had contacted Dr. Joseph Frager, Dr. Paul Brody and Odeleya Jacobs, founders of the World (now, International) Committee for the Land of Israel, and Helen Freedman, Executive Director of American Friends For a Safe Israel (AFSI) about running the beneďŹ t dinner for the Gush Katif museum. Ambassador John Bolton and radio and TV personality Glenn Beck were among the speakers. This year the dinner for the Gush Katif Museum In Jerusalem is scheduled for Saturday night, March 9, 8 PM, at the Razag Ballroom, 739 East New York Avenue. The featured speaker is Governor Mike Huckabee. Huckabee has been to Israel many times and visited the Gush Katif Museum in 2009 at the urging of Odeleya Jacobs and Drs. Frager and Brody. They, Helen Freedman, Assemblyman Dov and Shani Hikind, Sara Lehmann, Ruben Margules, Joe Stamm, Mel Wadler, Zev Brenner and others, were there with him when Mrs. Rivka Goldschmidt, a refugee from the Gush Katif

YIW pre-Pesach Mitzva fair people benefit from the food (donated) and the proper disposal of shaimos.” He said that both Pesach and non-Pesach items of food may be brought in and donated, as long as they are non-perishable. The mitzvah fair is dedicated le’ilui nishmas Yosef Nisan Ben Yechezkel, in memory of Mr. Joseph Glatt, Rabbi Glatt’s father. Rabbi Glatt will also be giving his annual Yahrzeit shiur, class, on the occasion of his father’s sixth Yahrzeit, on March 17th at 8 pm at the Young Israel of Woodmere entitled: “Something to say at the Seder.” There is no charge to attend the class and everyone is welcome to come.

It’s one stop, one location and one time. “It’s wonderful and we publicize all these beautiful mitzvos. It’s also a show of achdus (unity), when all the shuls in the community participate, cosponsors in the Hewlett– Woodmere area.” He pointed out that they “always find Sha’atnez every year and they find posul (unfit according to Jewish law) mezuzos and Tefillin every year. THINK TRAFFIC IS BAD NOW ON ROCKAWAY TURNPIKE? YOU MUST VOTE NO ON THE MEGA-MEDICAL CENTER.

Converting the Number Six School to a mega-medical center is a bad idea for our communities. We all care about our Five Towns community. We value our families’ safety and our peaceful quality of life. That’s why we’re very concerned about the proposal to put a mega-medical center on the Number Six School property, converting a quiet residential neighborhood into a healthcare complex open 14 hours a day, seven days a week.

The mega-medical center will attract thousands of out-of-town patients, employees, delivery drivers, repair teams and sales people from very early in the morning until late at night. How safe can our families be in their midst?

NOISE AND GRIDLOCK Our community already has trafďŹ c problems. The addition of the center its thousands of visitors will cause major disruptions, noise and frustrating gridlock on Peninsula Boulevard, Branch Boulevard and Rockaway Turnpike. How low will our property values sink while we save $35 a year in taxes?

PARKS TO PARKING LOTS The project will take valued open space—safe places where our kids play—and turn them into a parking lot to accommodate the mega-center’s thousands of visitors.

FOR OUR FAMILIES’ SAFETY AND QUALITY OF LIFE, VOTE NO ON MARCH 20.

OUR CHILDREN’S SAFETY FIRST

Purim redux in the Five Towns Purim is past but not forgotten. Families in Woodmere are very serious about Purim often celebrating with themes and elaborate costumes, along with hamentash making, hearing the Megillah, distributing mishloah manot, food packages, and charity for the needy. If Purim is past, can Pesach be far off? A display at Costco appeared to portray the connection between the two holidays. Maybe a little too close. Get ready for Pesach!! From one holiday of freedom to another.

Remember Rav Sheinberg and Rav Forman

By Rabbi Noam Himelstein

617087

In 1967, as other yeshiva students were eeing Israel just before the Six Day War broke out, Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Sheinberg, Rosh Yeshivat Torah Ohr in Jerusalem, instructed his students to stay in case they were needed to help. He slept in the bomb shelter with them, and looked after them in every way. Not a student went home. The ďŹ rst Yahrtzeit since he died falls this week. And we heard, as well, of the death of Rabbi Menachem Forman, Rav of Tekoa, this week. An appreciation of all gedolim, regardless of their political views, is essential, especially today‌.

DMV…Delectable Meat and Vegetable stew T he DMV is something of a cliché. DMV jokes are so numerous, that the government has actually changed the name in various states. The list of jokes have gotten so long it’s actually longer than the actual lines at the DMV. So, needless to say, I wasn’t happy when I had to go to the DMV to renew my registration, which came about in a humorous way. My husband handed me a ticket for an expired inspection of his car. All at once I lost my temper. “Jerry” I exclaimed, “you did the same thing last year and the year before. You don’t wait till you get a ticket, you actually check the month it’s due and get it inspected before then. This better not happen next year,” I warned. Judy Joszef The next day I noticed a ticket on my windshield. Turns out it was a ticket for an expired registration. I sheepishly called Jerry and asked if he needed a laugh and relayed my story. Boy did I mess up….boy am I never going to reprimand my husband again….unless he wears that jacket that has the blood resistant nylon lining in the back pockets for use when fishing or hunting……which of course he does neither of. Although, it’s really hard to get angry at him. Just ask the cop who stopped him for a

broken light while on the way to Maariv to say Kaddish for his father. After putting his license through the computer he told Jerry his license had been revoked for not paying a parking ticket on his kid’s car. He could have had him arrested. Jerry innocently said he didn’t mind spending the night in jail, but he had to get to Maariv first, then he would go to jail. He explained that he had never missed saying the prayer for his deceased father all year. The cop retorted, “You can’t drive there, your license is revoked, remember?” To which Jerry, and only Jerry, replied, “Ok then officer, can you drive to me to the synagogue in Teaneck? It’s the only place where I can still make Maariv, which starts in five minutes. They have a late minyan, um prayer service, then you can drop me off at the police station.” The cop actually sheepishly said, “I’m going to walk away, you do what you have to do and then make sure you take care of your ticket and license.”… hmmm I never had such luck….. So off I was to the DMV. The last time I was there was to renew my license, which I lost while on vacation a few years back. After waiting an eternity, I was called up to the window and told my Social Security number was incorrect. ”Really?” I said, “I’m sure it’s you who’s incorrect as I’ve been using this same SS number for my entire life.” “Well,” she said, “It’s not listed under your name.” “Oh,” I said, “that’s because it’s under my maiden name, Feig.” She explained the new rule that your SS card has to have your correct legal name listed. “OK, what proof do

you need?” She said I would need to show proof my last name was Pollack. How ironic! I was married for 20 years and never changed my last name on my SS card and now that I was divorced and about to remarry in three months I would have to change my name, for three months, then change it again, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get a driver’s license. I called the SS office and asked what proof of ID I needed. I was told to bring my driver’s license, or my original marriage license… well, I didn’t have my driver’s license and couldn’t find my marriage license so I had to bring my passport to the SS office. Imagine my horror when I found out my passport expired the day before. So I had to go to the City Clerk’s Office and wait on line for two hours to get an official stamped copy of my marriage certificate to prove my last name was Pollack to bring it to the SS office to get a new card so I could renew my passport and receive a new driver’s license. Chad Gad Ya…. So what does my recipe have to do with the DMV? Simple….It’s Delectable Meat and Vegetable stew, enjoy ;)

Ingredients: •2 pounds stew beef cubed •1 cup chopped onions •1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt •2 to 3 teaspoons vegetable oil •2 cans beef broth •hot water •2 ½ cups diced potatoes •2 ¼ cups diced carrots

•1 stalk celery, chopped •2 tablespoons flour •1/3 cup cold water •2 cubes Dorit crushed garlic •black pepper and salt to taste

Preparation: Heat oil in a pot; add beef, salt and chopped onions. Cook over medium heat for about 12 minutes, until the meat is browned on all sides and onions are tender. Drain off excess fat. Add beef broth and enough hot water to the pot until liquid level is about 1 inch above the contents. Cover and reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until the meat is tender. Add the potatoes, carrots, and celery. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 30 minutes longer, until vegetables are tender. To thicken the stew, combine the flour with 1/3 cup cold water; stir until smooth. Gently stir flour mixture into the pot a little at a time, using as much as needed to make the stew as thick as you prefer. Add pepper and taste for seasonings, adding more salt if necessary. Dr. Brody is wearing the 100-year-old Tallit of his grandfather who originally convinced him to learn to read the Megillah. Brody has read the Megil-

hope that this will serve as an impetus for other yeshivot to institute a program for teaching students how to read the Megillah. This will enable young Megillah readers to help those who are home bound or in hospitals and nursing homes who are unable to come to the public reading in shuls.”

A Memorable Mother-Daughter Evening at Shalhevet

Mar 10

On Tuesday evening, February 26th, current Shalhevet students, next year’s incoming students, and their mothers gathered in Shalhevet’s ballroom for a memorable mother- daughter dinner. Shalhevet students mingled with the incoming freshmen, who enjoyed the warm introduction to Shalhevet’s community. The evening began with cupcake decorating lead by Mrs. Tsippy Nussbaum, mother of Meira Nussbaum, 9 th grade. Shalhevet’s choir sang and. Mrs. Eisenman delivered a shiur about the ways in which Miriam Hanevia took on an important role in Yetziat Mitzrayim, starting from the birth of her brother Moshe. We finished the incredible evening with ice cream, cheese cake, and fruit. We all enjoyed the opportunity to spend time bonding with our mothers and friends and we feel lucky to be part of a school where such events are the norm. A COMMUNITY SAFETY ALERT FROM CONGREGATION AISH KODESH We wish to apprise you of an incident that occurred on Central Avenue one evening last week. A young woman was accosted by two men at about 6:30 PM and they stole her backpack. In light of this occurrence we strongly recommend that children travel in groups, even on main thoroughfares, and that parents carefully monitor their children’s whereabouts. Please be cautious, caution your children and share safety tips with them as well.We also recommend that when school pick-ups are made after dark that you instruct the adult who is driving to get out of the car to identify him/herself so that your children only enter a car driven by an adult they recognize. The safety of our children is a paramount value. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

ON THE

Parshat Vayakhel - Pekudei

Yom HaChodesh HaRishon (or The First of the First Month) W ith this week doubling as a (double) parsha plus Parshat HaChodesh, we find the coincidence of the date of “HaChodesh” making an appearance in the parsha - “On the day of the first new moon, on the first of the month, you will erect the Mishkan.” (40:2) Commentaries are struck by the seeming redundancy – why does the Torah say “on the first of the month” when that date is obvious based on the previous phrase in the verse? The repetition lends itself to suggest that the 1st of Nissan is not randomly significant. Even though we don’t call the 1st of Nissan “New Year’s Day” (as we do for Rosh Hashana), there is much more Biblical importance attached to this Rabbi Avi Billet day than meets the eye. The Midrash Aggadah lists a number of events attached to this time period. The first Mitzvah was given (Shmot 12), Avraham was told Yitzchak would be born, the nation of Israel left Egypt, the Mothers of Israel were remembered, and it is the month of the future redemption. The specific date was the first of creation, of the months, of the Priesthood, of Service (in the Mishkan); the first time fire appeared

from heaven, G-d’s presence had a resting place, Israel was blessed; first for when Kodshim were eaten, first for the princes, and first for when the Bamot (makeshift altars) were forbidden. It was considered a day of great and extra special joy because it was the first day of Creation. (Obviously this midrash follows the line of thinking that the creation of the world took place in Nissan – not in the month of Tishrei). The Midrash Tanchuma says the special nature of the date in question includes three instructions (and assemblages) of the Mishkan, all done by Moshe, on the first day the Mishkan was ever erected. Rabbenu Bachaye explains why the multiple attempts at putting together the Mishkan were necessary. What are the chances that all the materials assigned for the making of the Mishkan would be perfect, fit together perfectly, and not be missing anything? Very slim. It seems, after all, that the instructions had always been, “Make what you’ve been told to make – without bothering to see if anything fits together – and we’ll work out the details somehow.” Perhaps Betzalel and company, the architects, did try to put everything together and were unsuccessful. This is why in 39:33 “They brought the Mishkan to Moshe.” They tried and tried but putting it together eluded them. The Medrash Tanchuma explains that G-d told Moshe to dabble with it and He would cause it to stand properly by itself. Moshe’s

taking it apart and putting it together three times was to show everyone how it could be done, that it could be done, and that it worked. It is clear that the month of Nissan is a midrashically special time for the Israelite nation. But how does it spell out that the first of the month needs to be the date the Mishkan is erected, and that the notion of the 1st of Nissan even needs to be repeated in the same sentence to get the point across? Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch points to the idea of the New Moon (Rosh Chodesh) as being one that the Jewish people have accepted as a time of renewal. Just as the moon waxes and wanes and then renews itself at the beginning of the month, so do the Jews have ups and downs and the occasional need for renewals in human society, and in our own lives. Since this message of the significance of Rosh Chodesh was first given to this nation in Egypt, in Nissan, at the moment of their original transformation from slaves to free people, it comes around again on the day of that first new moon. “The new moon of the arising nation was also the new moon of the dwelling of the Shechinah, the fulfillment of the promise ‘V’Shachanti B’tocham’ (I will dwell in them) (25:8) by which alone the national redemption reached its completion.” The repetition of the date, as it were, stands to distance this day, the most momentous among all firsts of Nissan, from any tinge

of a pagan nature festival. Because as a result of this particular Rosh Chodesh (Nissan) Israel reckons its first day of the month, it was chosen for the establishment of the Mishkan. This notion is most understandable when we remember the Gemara (Rosh Hashana 11) that proclaims, “They were first redeemed in Nissan, and they will be redeemed in Nissan in the future.” A specific time of year may be better for the Jewish people in the cosmos, and the emphasis on Rosh Chodesh Nissan indicates it is one of those very special days. As we bless the new month and read the origins of the first Rosh Chodesh, let us look forward to the Rosh Chodesh which is “coming our way for good,” and do our best to appreciate its significance in the history and future of our people.

Continued from page 3 function on a day to day basis.” As for Jonathan Pollard, Feiglin said that he hopes that the “President of the United States will bring Pollard with him when he comes to Israel. If he comes to speak at the Knesset without him he will speak to my empty chair.” He noted in a special discussion in Knesset this past Tuesday regarding Pollard, “who knows how many of us were saved because of him.” Other MKs said that Pollard and the Israeli government have regretted the violation of U.S. law, and Pollard “paid the price” and should be released now. Feiglin also said that he was “not surprised that the Supreme Court would allow (MK Haneen) Zoabi in the Knesset after the Marmara. They (the Arabs in Knesset) are not letting us run away from the real questions. The concept of the extreme leftist Zionism is to create Israelis instead of Jews.” The Arabs don’t identify as Israeli,he said. “We are left alone with the identity we are trying to run away from.” Although one can have a religion without the Temple Mount, Feiglin said, “ how can you have a Jewish identity without” it? “We’ve become a religion instead of what we are supposed to be. In 1967, G-d gave us a present (the Temple Mount). It is the secret of life.” Upon his return to Israel, Feiglin entered Har HaBayit. He has entered before and bowed and prayed, considered illegal Jewish activites by the Wakf (the administrative Muslim body overseeing the Temple Mount), and been arrested. This time he asked to enter the Dome of the Rock and was refused entry and ejected from the site. Feiglin cited Rabbi Shlomo Goren’s, z”l, statement that although it is forbidden to enter

that particular area, if there is a danger that it will be taken over by foreigners the Azara area can be entered as an act of conquest to prevent that. Feiglin emphasized that Jews should not enter the location of the Temple but as an MK representing “Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel” he felt he should enforce Israel’s control over the area. “There is a clear admission of the loss of Jewish sovereignty on the Mount and we must all begin to ‘use our feet’ in order to change the situation.” Said Feiglin, “ Har Habayit is the beating heart of Am Yisrael.” The Temple Mount, Har Habayit, was where the first and second Temples stood and were each destroyed 2,500 and 2,000 years ago. The Jerusalem hill is currently the site of the Dome of the Rock, and the Al Aqsa mosque, structures built in 691 CE. When Israel recaptured Western Jerusalem and the Old City in 1967, finally reclaiming the site of the Temple after 2,000 years, then General Moshe Dayan pulled down the Israeli flag the IDF had put up there and surrendered the area to the Muslim Wakf who has maintained control over the site restricting Jews from free access there. Although some rabbinic authorities prohibit Jews from entering the Temple plaza, other rabbinic authorities permit Jews to visit the site providing they undergo a purification ritual, have in mind the proper reasons for going there, and entering only in the areas delineated and permitted by these rabbinic authorities. (Consult your rabbi) Feiglin comes across as reserved, he speaks evenly and emphatically, to the point and from the heart. He wears a dark suit and tie, a knitted kipa, wire rimmed glasses and neatly trimmed slightly graying beard. His

roots go back to the “First Aliyah”; his family came to Israel in 1889 and were among the founders of the northern settlements in Israel. His grandfather Avraham was the first child born in Metulah. Although his ancestors were Orthodox, as time went on. his extended family now has members ranging through ultra-Orthodox to secular, right through left. Born in 1962, Feiglin grew up in Rehovot, studied in the Or Etzion high school yeshiva and enlisted in the army for full service becoming an officer in the engineering corps. After four years of service he moved with his wife Tzippy to Karnei Shomron. He opened a successful window washing company for high-rise buildings and later a hi-tech company. At that point, then Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin signed the Oslo Accords with Yasser Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). (In 1993, the Oslo agreement involved creating the Palestinian Authority and agreeing to give up Israeli territory to Arab control, including Gaza and areas of Judea and Samaria. Arafat was to state that Israel has a right to exist, stop terror and revoke anti-Israel clauses in the Palestinian National Covenant. The Israelis gave up Gaza and other areas to Arab control. The Arabs have not implemented their part of the agreement.) Warnings of the dangers of this agreement were ignored and Feiglin left private life, joining with friend and neighbor Shmuel Sackett to form Zo Artzeinu (This is our Land) a grass roots civil disobedience protest movement. In August 1995, 100,000 demonstrators from a cross section of Israel blocked over 100 major crossroads throughout Israel, stopping traffic and paralyzing the country,

He was arrested, tried for sedition and ultimately sentenced to six months of community service. Zo Artzeinu campaigned for Likud’s Benyamin Netanyahu, its volunteers handing out fliers in the streets, ultimately getting Netanyahu elected by a narrow margin. Feiglin wrote two books, “Where there are no Men” and “The War of Dreams.” When Likud shifted to the left, befriending Arafat, Feiglin decided that he would take over the Likud from within. He joined the party, encouraged others to join and was placed on the list. Zo Artzinu morphed into Manhigut Yehudit in 1995 promoting “belief based leadership” and joining and forming the largest faction within Likud. He ran for the head of the party against other leaders including Netanyahu three times, gaining votes in each election and winning 24% of the vote in 2007. Notes the Manhigut Yehudit website: “By joining the Likud, we have succeeded in bringing our will into mainstream public awareness. Jewish leadership is no longer a dream.”

Parshiot Vayakel – Pekudei - HaChodesh

Mirrors, Mirrors, On the Wall - and in the Mishkan By Rabbi David Etengoff Dedicated to the sacred memories of my mother, Miriam Tovah bat Aharon Hakohen, father-in-law, Levi ben Yitzhak, sister-in-law, Ruchama Rivka Sondra, sister, Shulamit bat Menachem, Shifra bat Chaim Alter, and Yehonatan Binyamin ben Mordechai Meir Halevi, and the refuah shlaimah of Yosef Shmuel ben Miriam. You [Moshe] shall make a washstand (kiyor) of copper and its base of copper for washing, and you shall place it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and you shall put water therein. (Sefer Shemot 30:18) And he [Bezalel] made the washstand (hakiyor) of copper and its base of copper from the mirrors of the women who had set up the legions, who congregated at the entrance of the tent of meeting. (Ibid. 38:8) He [Moshe] placed the washstand (hakiyor) between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and there he put water for washing. (Ibid. 40:30, these and all Bible and Rashi translations, The Judaica Press Complete Tanach) These three pasukim (verses) are found, respectively, in Parshiot Ki Tisa, Vayakel, and Pekudei. Each speaks about the kiyor, the washstand that was in the Mishkan (Portable Desert Sanctuary). The middle verse, however, differs from the other two in that it describes the origin of the copper from which the kiyor was fashioned: “... from the mirrors of the women who had set up the legions, who congregated at the entrance of the tent

of meeting. This is a perplexing statement to say the least, and it begs to be interpreted. We can readily ask three questions: 1. What was the original purpose of the mirrors? 2. Who were “the women who had set up the legions? 3. What or who were the legions? It is to these questions that we now turn. Rashi, the Prince of Commentators (104011050), addresses all of our inquiries in his famous comment on Sefer Shemot 38:8: from the mirrors of the women who had set up the legions: Heb. Israelite women owned mirrors, which they would look into when they adorned themselves. Even these [mirrors] they did not hold back from bringing as a contribution toward the Mishkan, but Moses rejected them because they were made for temptation [i.e., to inspire lustful thoughts]. The Holy One, blessed is He, said to him, “Accept [them], for these are more precious to Me than anything because through them the women set up many legions [i.e., through the children they gave birth to] in Egypt. When their husbands were weary from backbreaking labor, they [the women] would go and bring them food and drink and give them to eat. Then they [the women] would take the mirrors and each one would see herself with her husband in the mirror, and she would encourage him with words, saying, “I am more beautiful than you. And in this way they aroused their husbands desire and

would have relations with them, conceiving and giving birth there, as it is said: “Under the apple tree I aroused you.â€? (Megillat Shir HaShirim 8:5) This is [the meaning of] what is [lit. the mirrors of those who set up legions]. From these [the mirrors], the washstand was made, because its purpose was to make peace between a man and his wife‌ (Emendations for clariďŹ cation my own) Let us now analyze Rashi’s forthright and compelling exegesis of our verse: 1.“The mirrors of the women who had set up the legionsâ€? refers to the mirrors our female forebears used in Egypt to make themselves as attractive as possible to their spouses. Our male ancestors had all but given up hope regarding the possibility of a Jewish future. Their despondency, in conjunction with almost total physical exhaustion, lead them to separate themselves from their wives – thereby potentially ending the prospect for a new generation. The women refused to accede to their husbands’ dire prognostication and acted in such a manner as to ensure that a new generation of Jewish children would enter the world. In our Sages estimation, these Jewish women were authentic champions of the spirit. Little wonder, then, that Talmud Bavli, Sotah 11b states: “Because of the reward of the righteous women [for having and raising children under nearly impossible conditions] that were in that generation [i.e. the ďŹ nal generation in Egyptian bondage], the Jewish people were redeemed from Egypt.â€? 2.“The legionsâ€? refers to the children born to the heroic Jewish women immediately pri-

or to the Exodus from Egypt, whose lamrot hakol (against all odds and obstacles) attitude guaranteed the survival and future of our people. 3.Moshe, and by extension the entire Jewish peoplez learned an invaluable and eternal lesson from the interchange that he had with the Holy One blessed be He. G-d created us with two inclinations, namely; the yatzer hatov (inclination intrinsically dedicated to altruistic behaviors and mitzvot performance) and the yatzer hara (the predisposition inherently dedicated to selďŹ sh behaviors and “doing whatever you wantâ€?). Prima facie, one might have thought that only the ďŹ rst one could be used to serve the Almighty. As Rashi on Sefer Devarim 6:5 notes, however, nothing could be further from the truth: And you shall love [the L-rd]: Perform His commandments out of love. The one who acts out of love cannot be compared to the one who acts out of fear. If one serves his master out of fear, when the master sets a great burden upon him, this servant will leave him and go away [whereas if out of love he will serve him even under great burden] (Midrash Sifrei 6:5). With all your heart: Heb. The double “vethâ€? in, instead of the usual form, suggests: Love Him with your two inclinations [the good and the evil]. (Midrash Sifrei; Talmud Bavli Berachot 54a) ‌ Therefore, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him [Moshe], “Accept [the mirrors], for these are more precious to Me than anything because through them the women set Continued on page 19

Continued from page 18 up many legions in Egypt.” In other words, Hashem taught Moshe and the entire Jewish people for all time that even the yatzer hara can and should be used to serve our Creator. May we, like the holy and visionary Jewish women of Egypt, be zocheh (merit) to serve Hashem with both the yatzer hatov and the yatzer hara, and may the mirrors upon our walls ever be placed in the sanctuaries of our hearts. In that way, may we experience the coming of Mashiach Tzidkanu (the Righteous Messiah), the ingathering of the Exiles, the rebuilding of the Beit Hamikdash (the Holy Temple), and the complete fulfillment of Zechariah’s prophecy: “And the L-rd shall become King over all the earth; on that day shall the L-rd be one, and His name one.” (Sefer Zechariah 14:9) V’chane yihi ratzon.
