By Benzion Kaplan In the Diamond Bais Medrash at Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, a crowd ranging from sixth graders to kollel yungeleit and rabbeim waited patiently for the arrival of Yanky Brach, to present the proprietor of Brach’s Supermarket with an unexpected honor. Brach has used his business, which is now being sold, to quietly accrue profits that transcended the financial. With special pricing for yeshivos and across-the-board discounts for rabbeim and kollel yungeleit, he had made his own investment in the spiritual growth of the Far Rockaway and Five Towns community. Brach was escorted into the assembly by Rosh HaYeshiva Rabbi Yaakov Bender. Rabbi Dovid Bender, Rosh Kollel of Darchei’s Kollel Tirtza Devorah, said that through his actions, Brach was demonstrating his firm adherence to a fundamental of Yiddishkeit: that Torah is

our lifeblood, so talmidei chachamim should be accorded respect. A clearly moved Brach accepted a plaque and addressed the crowd. He recalled the legacy of his father and role model, Shmuel (Sam) Brach, a”h, then remarked that although Yeshiva Darchei Torah has grown tremendously since he enrolled his first son over 20 years ago — from a small set of structures and a few hundred talmidim to today’s magnificent campus that serves over 2,000 students — the essential ingredient in the yeshiva’s chinuch approach had not diminished. “You cannot take the heart out of Darchei,” he declared with visible emotion. The yeshiva publicly expressed its gratitude to the Brachs, a family that is a role model of chesed, while hundreds of talmidim absorbed living lessons in the importance of hakoras hatov — and appreciating Torah — that they will not soon forget.

Yanky Brach is greeted by students after the surprise presentation at Yeshiva Darchei Torah. From right: Brach; Rabbi Dovid Frischman, menahel of YDT’s middle school; and Rabbi Avrohom Bender, a rebbi and menahel at YDT.

friends,” and said to his opponents: “I’m dropping in, I’m not dropping out.” He praised the youth of America, and addressed his plans for the national debt and the rehabilitation of criminals and people who are mentally ill. Kasich refrained from personally attacking his opponents, and established a comfortable rapport with the audience. Some of the HANC students were interviewed by Hofstra media and community, which asked for their political views and hopes in regard to the upcoming election. Students were sure to emphasize the importance of Israel in all the interviews. Governor Kasich acknowledged the presence of HANC students and praised the Jewish religion more than once. At the end of the event, some HANC students snapped a quick photo with the governor before he exited the building.

By Jonah Maryles and Rachel Canter Students from HANC High School attended an intimate town hall meeting at Hofstra University for Republican presidential candidate John Kasich on Monday. The former Ohio governor was the first candidate to appear on Long Island in the run-up to the April 19 Democratic and Republican presidential primaries. Accompanied by social studies teacher, Mrs. Laura Eisner, and assistant college guidance director, Mrs. Marisa Gelb, the students received a first-hand look into the world of politics, just by heading across the street. Kasich gave a short account of his early life, including a humorous anecdote about meeting President Nixon when he was just 18. He spoke briefly about Israel, calling it “one of America’s best

With Long Island getting in gear for a busy two weeks of presidential primary policking, the multi-million-dollar state Senate race on the South Shore is insisting on not taking a back seat. Both Democratic and Republican presidential primaries and the 9th District state Senate election will be held on Tuesday, April 19. Democrat Todd Kaminsky and Republican Chris McGrath continRosh HaYeshiva Yeshiva ued to argue over ethics, Israel, school aid and even the nature ofRosh the Beis Medrash L’Talmud campaign itself, trading barbs over who is or isn’t willing to debate. Beis Medrash L’Talmud Lander College Men Endorsements poured into bothfor camps, with two Long Island members of Congress dividing, as expected, along party lines.
