Don’t even think about not voting The Jewish Star Editorial It’s not as though you didn’t know it was coming.

Next Tuesday, April 19, there will be two important elections on Long Island. Every registered voter in the 9th state Senate district, and every registered Democrat and Republican anywhere in New York, is obliged to vote.

The state Senate election, in a South Shore district that includes the Five Towns (see map on page 19) may determine whether the Senate stays in Republican hands or eventually

joins the Assembly in the Democratic column.

The Senate election will ďŹ ll a vacancy created when former Majority Leader Dean Skelos was convicted of corruption last December. It pits Democratic Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky of Long Beach against Republican attorney Chris McGrath of Hewlett Harbor. A Green Party candidate is also on the ballot.

While the Senate contest, in which the candidates spent more than two-million dollars, puts Long Island in the state spotlight, it’s the ďŹ rst time in decades that New York’s

been relevant in a presidential primary.

Our communities turning out to vote in great numbers, as well as how we vote, can have a great impact on issues of special importance to us (yeshiva aid and security, and America’s alliance with Israel, are two of numerous examples) as well as on broader issues of public interest. Whether or not voting in these circumstances is required by halacha (consult your rabbi on this), voting is certainly a necessary and meritorious act.

Terror wanes, but Shin Bet says threat remains

By Shlomo Cesana, Israel Hayom Is the current wave of Palestinian terrorism waning? Yes, according to data from Israel’s Shin Bet security agency.

But Shin Bet adds that the Islamic Movement in Israel is still trying to stir violence on the Temple Mount, and that terrorist groups plan to perpetrate large attacks against Israeli targets in the coming weeks. One of the chief concerns, Shin Bet says, is that the current lull in violence is designed to conceal preparations for the next large wave of terror.

The head of the Shin Bet research division told Israel’s weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday that there has been a dramatic decline in the number of Palestinian terrorist attacks in recent weeks. He added, however, that ef-

forts to perpetrate complex attacks such as suicide bombings or abductions of soldiers still pose a concrete threat.

“The Shin Bet and the Israeli security forces have thwarted 290 substantial attacks, including 25 attempted abductions and 15 attempted suicide bombings,” the official, whose identity was undisclosed, told government ministers.

Since Sept. 13, 2015, the Palestinian terror wave has claimed the lives of 34 people and injured more than 400 others, in attacks mainly consisting of stabbings, shootings, and car-rammings. There were 20 terrorist attacks in March and only three so far in April, compared to 78 substantial attacks last October, the Shin Bet official said.

“Israel’s actions have convinced the Palestin-

ian public that escalation is futile,” he said, adding that “most of the terrorist attacks were perpetrated by young people. Some of the attacks were motivated by nationalistic sentiments, but most of them were personally motivated by things like financial distress or personal crises. … Alongside these attacks, in recent months terrorist organizations, with an emphasis on Hamas, have been trying to perpetrate substantial attacks in Judea and Samaria and inside Israel in an effort to accelerate the escalation of violence.”

The official stressed the security agency’s “great effectiveness” in preventing Jewish terrorism, citing the arrests of the Jewish group that firebombed a Palestinian home in Duma last July, killing three members of the Dawabshe family. “This also contributed to

Included in their recent goals is the introduction of legislation to support assisted suicide as a way to move forward their agenda of despair.

Only the Republican Senate stops these liberal bills from going forward. The 5 Towns community has an opportunity to keep the New York State Senate controlled by Republicans by voting for Chris McGrath for Senator.

At Sunday’s cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Shin Bet’s success in combating terrorism is evident.

“I say this with great caution because this trend could reverse,” Netanyahu said.

“But we know this [decrease in terrorism] has been achieved as a result of this government’s aggressive, responsible and systematic policy. And I want to commend the IDF, Shin Bet, and Israel Police for their implementation of this policy.”

Separately, at Israel’s annual commemoration ceremony for past presidents and prime ministers on Sunday, Netanyahu also remarked on the security situation, saying that the current wave of terrorism has been characterized by lone wolf attacks and that Israel is “not allowing terrorists to organize.”

Netanyahu said that after Israel’s Operation Defensive Shield in 2002, in which then-prime minister Ariel Sharon tried to crush terrorist infrastructure in Judea and Samaria, “the Palestinians realized that we will not hesitate to go deep in order to restore security for the citizens of Israel. We are adhering to this principle: We will go anywhere, whenever necessary. We do it all the time, and the decline that we are witnessing in the number of terror incidents is, among other things, a result of this policy and the way it is implemented by the IDF, the Shin Bet, and the Israel Police.”

Meanwhile, Netanyahu instructed Israeli security forces and the justice minister to “take action to expel Sheikh Raed Salah,” the head of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel. Salah, a vocal critic of Israeli policy, has been accused of inciting to violence against Israel and has been imprisoned in Israel twice. In Sunday’s address, Netanyahu maintained that Salah was actively trying to stir up violence on the Temple Mount, three months after the Islamic Movement in Israel was outlawed.

“We have identified efforts by Salah to sow dissent in the area of the Temple Mount ahead of Passover. This man is a one-man powder keg,” Netanyahu said, recalling that Salah was supposed to begin serving an eight-month prison sentence last November, but that the sentence was postponed at Salah’s request.

“This man should be in prison,” Netanyahu said.

She provided a real life lesson as to how a small act of chesed can have a huge impact on the recipient. Meredith’s message to the children, posted by her mom, said it all.

“The 4th and 5th graders at Yeshiva Darchei Torah made a poster to help me feel better, and even better, the 1st and 2nd graders at Bais Yaakov Ateres Miriam each chose to do something good in my merit for our new Terrific Tuesday idea, and they wrote their pledges of ideas of what they will be doing in my honor.

“One girl promised to help other classmates move their chairs; another promised to hug a friend to make her smile; and yet another will help pick up the markers from the floor … and so on.

“I cannot begin to properly explain just how much this moved me.”

‘Wonderful mitzvah’ at JCC food pantry The Rina Shkolnik kosher food pantry of the Marion & Aaron Gural JCC last week invited needy Five Towners to stock up for Pesach.

“Unfortunately for many it is a very different holiday [with] many, many families in need of help,” said Arlene Putterman, a spokesperson for Stop & Shop,

“which donated “a ton” of food to the Woodmere pantry.

Joel Block, executive director of the JCC, said the pantry was there “so no one in our community goes to bed in need.”

Food coordinator Renee Harris said the pantry will be open until April 21, the day before Pesach

begins. “This is a lot of food and many families need things for Passover,” she said of the Stop & Shop donation.

“This is a wonderful mitzvah, having a food pantry for the residents and we appreciate it,” said one of the pantry’s consumers.

Where and when to dispose of it With the first Seder just hours away, Sanitary District 1 will collect last-minute chometz on Friday, April 22.

Residents are encouraged to dropoff trash to garbage trucks that will be parked by the Lawrence and Cedarhurst Long Island Rail Road stations, and outside the Young Israel of Woodmere and Temple Hillel in North Woodmere, from 7 am to 2 pm.

There will be all-day pick-up services available throughout the Five Towns for trash placed at the curb in securely tied garbage bags between 7 am and 1 pm.

Residents are asked not to store tied bags in garbage cans.

Residents can request a trash pick-up during the hours of 7 am and 1 pm by calling 516-239-5600, but an exact time for pick-up cannot be guaranteed.

The last time to eat chametz is 10:14 am, and the last time to burn chametz is 11:35 am, according to the Young Israel of Woodmere.

At tower, start-up nation is ‘storytelling nation’

By Maayan Jaffe-Hoffman The inside of the Kishle, a structure erected in 1834 by Ibrahim Pasha, who governed the land of Israel from Egypt, is cold and dark.

When the Ottoman Turks regained the area in 1841, it served as a military compound. During the British Mandate, it was used as a police station and prison where some members of the Jewish underground were incarcerated.

The stories of the Kishle are endless. If only its walls could talk.

Actually, soon, the stone walls of the Kishle—and other areas of the adjacent Citadel and Tower of David Museum complex in Jerusalem—might virtually speak, thanks to the work of 100 computer programmers and other techsavvy individuals who spent 30 hours last week creating augmented reality, virtual reality, and gaming solutions to enhance museum visitors’ experiences as well as to bring the stories, places and people of ancient Jerusalem to life.

Jerusalem’s “Hacking the Walls” event was the first museum-sponsored “hackathon” in Israel.

The event’s first prize went to participants Royi Elbag and Yaara Ilan of ARCH, a company that deals with applications for archaeological sites, and three whizz kids— 12th grader Malachi Shneor and 9th graders Ofer Stolev and Yuval Goldshmidt.

“Archaeology is just stones, but where are the people? Where is the story? Technology can help us imagine,” said Eilat Lieber, director of the Tower of David Museum.

“Hacking the Walls” drew some prominent sponsors, including the Epson electronics giant, whose representative brought the company’s new BT200 transparent smart glasses in hopes of encouraging participants to find new ways to use that technology in the museum world.

conference, “Museums in a Digital Age—Enhancing the Visitor Experience,” are part of a growing international initiative to infuse new life into museums. Lieber said that museum visitors’ patience is dwindling. While visitors used to spend two or more hours exploring the halls of history, today’s visitors want a 30-minute crash course. Additionally, with the growth of the Internet, there are quicker ways than museums or libraries to learn about the past, leaving museums at risk of becoming irrelevant. But AR/VR can engage the imagination of visitors.

Jerusalem’s Tower of David has been a pioneer in the use AR/VR for museums. In the last 18 months, the museum has launched more than 10 applications that help bring the tower museum to life. Among them is an app that allows visitors to scan the skyline above the tower

with their iPad to receive a map of the most important historical icons in the area. When an icon is clicked, the visitor can watch a video or hear audio about the location.

The museum’s technology initiatives represent the height of old meets new, a juxtaposition of ancient and modern. This dynamic is helping make Jerusalem the AR/VR capital of Israel and perhaps the world.

“It is working because there is so much inspiration in this place,” said Helen Wexler, director of JNext, the Jerusalem Development Authority’s (JDA) technology and entrepreneurship program. “There is a richness of content that you cannot get anywhere else.”

According to Itzik Ozer, director of business management for JDA, there has been a technological renaissance in the last three years

in Jerusalem. Today, an average of 350 technology events take place each year in the holy city, which boasts 15 venture capital firms and 12 new start-up accelerator programs. This month, Jerusalem hosted events such as the 2016 Forbes Under 30 Summit, Cyber Night, and Hacking the Walls. Jerusalem will also host Geek Picnic—the largest Eastern European open-air festival dedicated to popular science, modern technology, science, and art—from April 24 to 28.

AR/VR technology is a perfect match for Jerusalem because it is technology rooted in design and content, according to Wexler. Fiftypercent of the design talent in Israel is trained in Jerusalem.

“Right now, the world is sputtering in technology,” said Yoram Honig, director of the Jerusalem Film Fund. “But more important is storytelling. People don’t yet know how to tell a story with virtual reality—or even what is a good story to tell with virtual reality. Israel has become a ‘start-up nation,’ but we were always a storytelling nation. Silicon Valley is working on technology. France is talking about language. Here, we do it together and that is going to be our thing.”

First-prize winners in thehackathon received a 5,000-shekel ($1,327) prize, a pair of Epson Moverio BT200 glasses, and the opportunity to leverage support from AtoBe Accelerator at the Azrieli College of Engineering in Jerusalem. The second-prize winners created a virtual reality experience of Jerusalem called Jeruz361degree, giving users the ability to explore 360-degree views of the city and of specific sites. The third-prize winners developed the idea of placing smart cameras around the museum at all of the best spots for photos.

aymond Smullyan, in his book “5000 B.C. and Other Philosophical Fantasies,” posits the question of two identical twin brothers, one who always lies and the other who always tells the truth. Whatever is indeed true, the truth teller believes to be true; the liar’s responses are always false, such that whatever is true he will always believe to be false and whatever is false he will always assume is true.

Thus, posits Smullyan, each brother will always give the same answer to the same question, but for different reasons: “For example, suppose you ask whether two plus two equals four. The accurate truth teller knows that it is and will truthfully answer yes. The inaccurate liar will believe that two plus two does not equal four (since he is inaccurate) and will then lie and say that it does; he will also answer yes.” (Much like the case in which a schizophrenic patient is being considered for release from a mental institution. Asked if he was Napoleon, he replied “no” and the lie detector showed that he was lying!)

Smullyan says that if meeting one of the two brothers alone, you would only need to ask one question: Is he the accurate truth teller? If he is, he will know that he is (since he is accurate) and truthfully will answer yes. If he is the inaccurate liar, he will believe that he is the accurate truth teller (since he is inaccurate in his beliefs), but then he will lie and say no. So the accurate truth teller will answer “yes” and the inaccurate liar will respond “no” to this question.

Even though the two brothers give the same answers to the same questions, by asking each of them, “Are you the accurate truth teller?” they are really being asked two different questions since the identical word “you” has a different reference for each of them. his week’s portion, Metzora, among other things, contains the purification rite of the leper. (Though we use the word leprosy for convenience’s sake, tzaraat is clearly not the disease of leprosy currently known as Hansen’s disease. For example, the Biblical affliction was not contagious, but rather a spiritual state generally viewed as the consequence of slander and other transgressions, such as when Miriam seemed to slander Moshe, resulting in her affliction of tzaraat.)

Once the kohein has determined that leprosy has been cured or removed, as part of the return of the metzorah (leper) rejoining the main camp, he must take two live clean birds as an offering (Leviticus Vayikra 14:4).

One of the birds is slaughtered, and the second is dipped in the slaughtered bird’s blood, before being “set free upon the field” (14:7).

A similar ritual appears in next week’s portion of Acharei Mot, in which the kohein gadol, in a central point of the Yom Kippur service in which the Jewish people are purified and forgiven their sins., takes two identical goats — one is slaughtered and the other

is not slaughtered, but rather is “sent into the desert” (ibid. 16: 10).

Unlike the living bird that the metzorah brings, the living goat is not sprinkled with (or dipped in) the blood of the slaughtered goat. And the goat is ultimately not meant to live, having been taken to the desert to die.

According to tradition, it was cast off a cliff where it would tumble and fall and be torn apart, apparently symbolic of our sins being torn apart as part of our repentance and subsequent forgiveness (Tractate Yoma 67a).

The freed bird would not be assumed to die if it was “set free upon then field.” The rabbis (Tractate Kiddushin 57b), concerned over this question, taught that one should not cast it towards the sea or the desert, apparently to prevent its return with the impurity it represented. So why is it set free and what is this ritual meant to symbolize? f the many different responses in the commentaries, my favorite has always been the Sefat Emet, who suggests that the slaughtered bird represents the yetzer hara (evil inclination) while the bird which is set free and lives represents the yetzer hatov (our desire to do good); dipping it in blood perhaps represents utilizing our appetite for evil towards a better good.

However, there is another explanation, which I recently saw quoted in an article on by Dr. Baruch and Judy Sterman (“Freebird: The Strange Case of the Bird that Lived”), which suggests a totally different understanding.

The Chizkuni (13th century French commentator) points out that a bird dipped in blood, set free upon the field, would actually meet a very different fate than one might think. Indeed, other birds would probably see and even smell the blood and, either feeling threatened by a new and different identity, or sensing weakness and perhaps even assuming the bird is wounded, would attack it and kill it.

Longing to return to its flock, the bird dipped in blood and freed likely would have no idea of the danger it was flying into, until being attacked, overwhelmed and killed.

So, what does all this have to do with the metzorah?

The metzorah, forced to separate from society and leave the camp, was meant to consider the possibility that he or she may have committed the transgression of slander in one form or another. And the most terrible aspect of slander is the character assassination it inflicts on its hapless victim who may have no idea what people are saying about him, and may be totally unaware that his status has changed and people no longer see him quite the same way. We may think we have set the bird free, but in reality it is marked with blood, and is already, on one level, waiting to die.

The slanderer, too, may have no idea of the harm he has inflicted and the damage he has done. Indeed, our general perception is that the problem with slander (lashon ha’ra) is that it causes people to think ill of each other, and distances the listener from those he is hearing slander about, causing rifts in society and separating us one from another. Kerry’s resounding Iranian ‘success’ BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT

H

ere’s the latest episode of outreach to Iran from the lips of Secretary of State John Kerry. After condemning, during a press conference in Bahrain, the “destabilizing actions� of Iran in the Middle East, he followed up with a plea. “Help us end the war in Yemen,�

Kerry implored the Tehran regime. “Help us end the war in Syria, not intensify it, and help us to be able to change the dynamics of this region.�

What do you call this? NaivetÊ? Hardnosed realism? The actualization of President Obama’s deeply held belief that American diplomacy must be humble and post-imperial? Or just the plain old enabling of a rogue state ruled by clerics who practice censorship and torture?

Perhaps the fairest way to adjudicate this would be to judge Kerry by his results. There is no chance that Iran is going to perform a 180-degree turnaround in its foreign policy, and Kerry knows it. In Syria, Iran has worked with Russia to stabilize the bloodstained tyrant Bashar al-Assad, while in Yemen and elsewhere in the Gulf, it is systematically baiting the conservative Sunni monarchies quivering in the face of rising Shi’a power.

Still, one can only say that Kerry has failed if one believes that the Obama administration’s policy is aimed primarily at curbing Iranian provocations. Now, when you look at the administration’s policy on Iran, it becomes clear that Kerry’s expressed concern about Iran’s behavior was a sop to his Bahraini hosts. When it is remembered that current administration policy is to disengage from the region, thereby empowering Iran, it can be argued that Kerry’s results have actually been a resounding success in the context of that policy. omentum, thankfully, is building in Congress to counter Iran’s reentry into a global ďŹ nancial system in which the U.S. is still the most powerful player. In early April, Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) introduced a bill that will prevent Iran from gaining even indirect access to American banks and other ďŹ nancial institutions, while also imposing secondary sanctions against any ďŹ nancial institutions that assist Iran in offshore dollar trading.

mittee has announced an investigation into whether the Obama administration misled Congress over the nuclear deal with Iran, on such critical issues as continuing Iranian missile tests and the character of the nuclear facilities inspections regime. Moreover, the anxiety over these concessions to Iran is bipartisan in nature. Prominent Democrats pushing back against administration policy include House Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), who told AIPAC that blocking Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons — a potential outcome that the nuclear deal has no power to prevent — needs to be our “number one� focus.

Meanwhile, Iran is doing everything it can to remind the world that its stance will only become more belligerent. After one of the regime’s missile tests in early March, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh issued a brazen threat to Israel, stating that the “reason we designed our missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometers is to be able to hit our enemy the Zionist regime from a safe distance.�

That has now been followed up with another demonstration of intent. On April 7, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan inaugurated a new Octogen power plant. Octogen is an explosive used in

penetrating missile warheads. It can also be deployed as a detonator for an atomic weapon.

An Iranian Defense Ministry didn’t need to pretend that the Octogen manufacture was for defensive purposes: “The Defense Ministry has also paid attention to boosting the destructive and penetration power of different weapons’ warheads and has put on its agenda the acquisition of the technical know-how to produce Octogen explosive materials and Octogen-based weapons,� the statement said.

What should worry us here in America is that our current administration is satisďŹ ed with this current threat level. When it comes to the presidential race, fear of further strategic giveaways to the Iranians will remain locked in place for as long as Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), with their isolationist platforms, maintain their bids for their respective parties’ nominations.

The present activity in Congress is our best hope of pushing back against Iran, but it will not undo the nuclear deal. Nor will it prevent further Iranian missile tests, or Iran’s backing for such monsters as Assad and the Islamist terrorist organization Hezbollah. Given that, why would Iran conduct itself any differently?

Broken glass ruins Palestinian cause STEPHEN M. FLATOW

rdinarily, a piece broken glass lying on the ground is unsightly litter at best, a danger to bare feet and pets at worst.

But not in the Middle East; there a piece of broken glass has the power to ruin decades of political propaganda. Pro-Palestinian propaganda, that is.

Case in point: This week’s discovery of the world’s oldest glass kilns, alongside a railroad track at the foot of Mount Carmel, near Haifa.

Dr. Yael Gorin-Rosen, the head curator of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Glass Department, announced that the Mount Carmel diggers had come across pieces of broken glass, which in turn revealed fulledged glass kilns — “a very important discovery with implications regarding the history of the glass industry both in Israel and in the entire ancient world.â€? Freestone, of London’s University College, a specialist in the identiďŹ cation of the chemical composition of glass, declared the Mount Carmel glass “a sensational discovery.â€? Glass researchers from around the world are ying to Israel to view it ďŹ rsthand.

Why all the fuss? Well, it turns out that years ago, the glass-history experts carried out chemical analysis of glass objects that were found in Roman-era shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. The tests showed that the glass originated in the Acre (Akko) valley, in the northern part of the Land of Israel.

But nobody had ever located the actual kills where the raw materials were processed to create that glass. Until now!

This might seem like pretty boring stuff to anybody outside a handful of archaeologists and their fellow travelers. But in fact, it’s a vivid and powerful afďŹ rmation of Zionism and deals a devastating blow to the Palestinian Arab cause.

To begin with, the kilns reveal, according to Prof. Freestone, that “Israel constituted a production center on an international scale — hence its glassware was widely distributed

throughout the Mediterranean and Europe.�

Why is that such a big deal? Because the archaeologists have determined that the kilns are about 1,600 years old. That means they were in use around the year 400 CE, in the late Roman period.

Think about that. The Romans destroyed the Second Temple in the year 70 CE. The Bar Kochba rebellion was crushed in 135 CE and an estimated 600,000 Jews were killed. More than 1,000 Jewish cities and towns were destroyed. The popular assumption is that this catastrophe of murder, displacement and exile meant the end of any meaningful Jewish society in the Land of Israel.

Evidently it was no simple matter to sever the ties that bind the Jewish people to the Land of Israel. Because, as the glass discoveries demonstrate, in a relatively short period of time, the Jewish community in the Land of Israel was (among other things) serving as a glass-production center that exported its products throughout the Roman Empire.

There was no “Palestinian� glass-production center in the country. There weren’t Continued on page 14

t’s heeeeeeeere! Last week before Pesach.

I’m usually done with all my shopping and started kasheing my oven, stove etc.

Unfortunately, this year (due to neck issues from being rear-ended in an auto accident, and the flood I had in my house a week later), I’m nowhere near done. I did manage to do an initial shopping. Initial shopping is actually what starts out to be one huge shopping extravaganza, where we aim to buy everything on our list. But who are we kidding?

We’re not even close!

We write a long list, yet still find ourselves missing items when we get home. Granted, some of them we will never use — actually some of them I wouldn’t even use during the year — but, you know, just in case, like the turmeric.

So aside from the initial huge shopping, I end up making at least five trips.

You would think, with all the people heading out of town for the holiday, that the stores wouldn’t be as crowded, but it’s even crazier. Seems that all the people who travel to Florida are shopping here and having their orders sent down to them. Suddenly I had a sly smile, realizing that they had to go through the same shopping torture as I did.

We’re both shopping and having our Pesach orders delivered. Granted, theirs are being to shipped to sunny and warm Miami, Orlando, etc, while mine is ending up in Woodmere, but there is some satisfaction.

One thing I’m proud to say is that I haven’t succumbed to buying those half moon jelly slices. I’m going to be tough this year. I can do it. I can do it!

Makes one 9-inch cake, serving 10–12 For the Cake 1-1/2 cups slivered almonds Handful fine matzo meal (for dusting pan) 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped (best quality you can find) 3/4 cup sugar, divided 1-1/2 sticks (6 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus more for greasing the pan 6 large eggs 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice For the Ganache Frosting 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 teaspoons instant coffee or espresso powder 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped (best quality) Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Spread the almonds in a single layer on the prepared pan and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the almonds are lightly colored and fragrant.

Set aside to cool. Leave the oven on.

Butter the bottom and sides of a 9x3 springform pan and line the bottom with a round of parchment paper cut to fit. Butter the paper.

Dust the pan all over with the fine matzo meal.

ly, then invert over the sink and tap lightly to shake out any excess crumbs. Set the prepared pan aside.

Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring in between, until about 75 percent melted.

Stir and let the residual heat melt the chocolate until completely smooth. Set aside until tepid.

Place the almonds and 1/4 cup of the sugar (reserve remaining 1/2 cup sugar) in a food processor fitted with a metal chopping blade.

(Reserve the parchment paper from the nuts for icing the cake.) Process until the nuts are finely ground, stopping the machine once or twice to scrape down the sides. You should process for about one minute total. The mixture will be a little pasty but should not be the consistency of a nut butter. Set aside the ground nuts.

In the large bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter until soft. Add ¼ cup of the sugar (reserve the remaining 1/4 cup sugar) and beat to mix. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating and scraping the sides of the bowl as necessary until smooth.

Turn the mixture into the prepared pan. Rotate the pan briskly in order to level the batter.

Bake for 20 minutes at 350°F, then reduce the temperature to 325°F and continue to bake for an additional 50 minutes. The top might crack a bit; that’s okay.

Remove the cake pan from the oven and place it on a rack. Let stand until tepid, 50 to 60 minutes.

Release and remove the sides of the pan (do not cut around the sides with a knife—it will make the rim of the cake messy). Now, let the cake stand until it is completely cool.

The cake will sink a little in the middle as it cools. Use a long, thin, sharp knife (I prefer serrated) and level the top. It will seem like you’re cutting off a lot; don’t worry about it. The finished cake should be about 1-1/2-inches high.

Brush away any loose crumbs. Place a rack or a small board over the cake and carefully invert.

Remove the bottom of the pan and the paper lining.

The cake is now upside down; this is the way it will be iced. Place 4 strips of the reserved parchment paper (each about 3x12) around the edges of a cake plate.

With a large, wide spatula, carefully transfer the cake to the plate; check to be sure that the cake is touching the paper all around (in order to keep the icing off the plate when you ice the cake).

To make the ganache frosting, heat the cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat until it boils. Add the espresso or coffee powder and whisk to dissolve. Add the chocolate and remove from the heat. Stir until all the chocolate is all melted and the mixture is smooth. Let the ganache stand at room temperature, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes, or until it begins to thicken.

Pour the ganache slowly over the top of the cake. Using a long, narrow metal spatula, smooth the top and spread the icing so that a little runs down the sides of the cake (not too much—the icing on the sides should be a much thinner layer than on the top).

Smooth the sides with the spatula, then remove the parchment liners.

So, when I happened upon a commentary on a Haggadah whose authorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name brings to mind events in my past, a personal comment is in order as preface to this review. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From Despair to Destinyâ&#x20AC;? (Halpern Center Press, 2015) by Rabbi Aharon Marcus is a unique and comprehensive commentary on the Pesach Haggadah. The author is the grandson of Rabbi Joseph Marcus, zâ&#x20AC;?l, a distinguished rabbi and a neighbor of ours on the Lower East Side, ďŹ rst on Tompkins Square, and then in Co-op Village, who was particularly skilled in teaching and lecturing to senior citizens.

Most memorable to me was the casual friendship he struck up with me, during my pre-teen years, an experience that inďŹ&#x201A;uenced my later deep appreciation for Jewish liturgy and nusach, Jewish music and culture, and the importance of giving communal service to our senior citizens. All these served to inform my communal activities for the rest of my life, for which I am forever grateful. The Haggadah under review is dedicated, in part, to his everlasting memory.

This weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s essay is based on my email interview with Rabbi Aharon Marcus. abbi Marcus was born in Far Rockaway and raised on Staten Island. He was to make aliyah years later and together with his brothers founded Yeshivat Reishis Yerushalayim in 1994, where he continues to teach Talmud, and Jewish thought and law. In the early 1990s he published the works of his mentor, Rav Aharon Soloveichik, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Logic of the Heart, Logic of the Mindâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Warmth and the Light.â&#x20AC;?

I began by asking him why did he decide to write a Haggadah commentary when there already are so many available. â&#x20AC;&#x153;G-d has given me the opportunity to teach the Haggadah every year since the summer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; yes the summer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; of 1990, generally as intensive two-week-long information seminars. For nearly two decades, many of my students have impressed upon me to publish these shiurim, but my response had always been the same: there are many Haggadah commentaries; do we really need another one?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;While teaching the Haggadah in 2014, though, I realized that many of the ideas of the shiurim were actually unavailable in English, and that I had often failed to give them over as comprehensively as I would have prepared. It was then that I decided to take the

time to more fully develop the ideas and publish them in book form.â&#x20AC;?

Rabbi Marcus then explained the commentaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purpose: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The goal of this work is to help clarify the entire Haggadah, to explore ideas that are unique to Pesach â&#x20AC;&#x201D; exile, redemption, freedom, the signiďŹ cance of the Exodus â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and notions crucial to Judaism in general, such as the deďŹ nition of holiness, the efďŹ cacy of prayer, and the love of G-d. This work was not intended as a book on Jewish law, nor, an anthology of divrei Torah to share at the seder. Rather, I see this intended to be a work on machshavah, Jewish thought. To be sure, the commentary does contain instructions on ritual. However, its primary aim is to weave together different schools of thought and the citations of great scholars representing variant schools of thought in order to engage, enlighten, and inspire.

I have tried to craft a commentary in which everyone could ďŹ nd his or her place in the depth and beauty of our rich tradition. All this was generated by the reality that different people ďŹ nd religious truths and meanings in different Torah thoughts and teachings.â&#x20AC;?

I asked Rabbi Marcus why, unlike most other English commentaries this Haggadah, his reads from left to right. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The guiding principle for the layout of this work is one word: clarity. Since it is designed for English readers and the overwhelming majority of the text is in English, I thought that it would ďŹ&#x201A;ow better, and more easily, if it read from left to right. To compensate for this, though, all the actual Haggadah text â&#x20AC;&#x201D; both in Hebrew and English, is always to be easily found on the odd numbered pages, located on the readersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; right side. Also, the many stages of the seder are clearly labeled at the bottom of each page, thus making the place of particular passages and segments easier to locate.â&#x20AC;?

A personal note: As a teacher I was taken

by Rabbi Marcusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; treatment of the segment dealing with the forth of the four sons (pages 96-99). The authorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s human treatment of this â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2122;sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; is touching. He graphically caps this segment with the following sentences: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The ďŹ rst stage of education is pouring on chessed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; warmth, love, and compassion.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stimulate his interest so that he asks questions and actively participates.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;An educator must believe in his students and their potential.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The silent son needs us to mend his tools, to make him whole.â&#x20AC;?

When one considers the title given to the forth son, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The One Not Knowing to Ask,â&#x20AC;? we come to better appreciate the humanity of the author of this gifted commentary, and of the well learned teachings that he learned from his gifted grandfather, Rabbi Joseph Marcus.

In declaring that the Jewish people would not believe he was sent by G-d (4:1), Moshe slanders the Jewish people by suggesting they would not believe the messenger of G-d. But what transgression has actually occurred?

It is ludicrous to suggest that Moshe’s “slander” would impact G-d’s perception of the Jewish people and cause G-d to distance Himself from the Jewish people. And the case of Moshe is not unique; we find similar

Truth and slander, and how we see occurrences with both Eliayhu (Melachim I, 19:10) and Yishayahu (6:5), who are each punished for their harsh criticism of the Jewish people, even though they are speaking only to G-d.

Perhaps the transgression of slander impacts not only society, but (perhaps even foremost) the speaker himself.

If one can speak negatively about his fellow, then one does not really see the image of G-d that is part of everyone. That has to gradually destroy one’s soul. If I speak ill of another person, I am not just damaging them (and their reputation), I am actually damaging myself as well.

To reenter the camp, and become part of a community experience that brings people together, we have to both slaughter the bird

that represents what we know we are doing wrong, and also dip the second bird in blood and set it free, accepting that there are mistakes we have made which cannot be undone. Perhaps the sobering realization of the pain we can cause and the damage we may inflict will help us to avoid making the same mistakes in the future, becoming instead part of the fabric of building a better, healthier community and society.

As Smullyan posits, with two identical birds (or identical twins), everything depends on how we see ourselves, and which “you” we really want to be.

Broken glass ruins Palestinian cause Continued from page 8 even any Muslims in the country; Islam was not founded until the seventh century CE. And it turns out that much of what glass historians know about Roman glass is based on a 4th century CE decree by an early Roman emperor named Diocletian. His edict, carved on stone tablets, set the prices for the two types of glass used in the empire. One type was called “Alexandrian Glass,” because it originated in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. The other was called “Judean glass.”

Not “Palestinian glass.” Judean glass. Because everyone knew that the name of the region was Judea. That’s what the Bible called it. That’s what historians called it for more than 2,000 years.

Contemporary Palestinian propagandists have tried to bury the name “Judea.” They prefer the de-Judaized term “West Bank.”

But until a few decades ago, nobody ever used the phrase “West Bank.” Do you know why? Because it has no historical basis, no legal basis, and no real geographical basis, since most of it is miles away from the western bank of the Jordan River.

Just a few weeks ago, Israeli archaeologists discovered two seals that were used for sealing documents in the 7th or 8th centuries BCE, that is, some 2,700 years ago. The writing on them was Hebrew, not Arabic.

One bore the name of man, “Sa’adyahu ben Shebnayahu;” the other had the name of a woman, “Elihanah bat Goel” (or Gael). The

archaeologists noted that the construction of the names were “in typical Judean fashion for this time period.”

There it is again: Judean. Not “Palestinian.”

I look forward to seeing the Sa’adyahu ben Shebnayahu and Elihanah bat Goel seals when they go on display. And I hope to see the Mount Carmel glass, when it is exhibited at the Carmel Zvulun Regional High School later this year.

Yes, I know it’s only a piece of broken glass. But really, it’s so much more.

Proper ďŹ&#x201A;ossing techniques are vital to the health of your teeth and gums. These tips will help you with the correct ďŹ&#x201A;ossing procedures. Likewise, your dentist can also help you learn how to ďŹ&#x201A;oss effectively and efďŹ ciently.

Steps to proper ďŹ&#x201A;ossing

1. Choosing Dental Floss. You can ďŹ nd dental ďŹ&#x201A;oss in various ďŹ&#x201A;avors, as well as waxed or unwaxed. 2. Flossing â&#x20AC;&#x153;Helpers.â&#x20AC;? Beginner ďŹ&#x201A;ossers who have trouble coordinating the ďŹ&#x201A;oss and the movements of their hands can use a ďŹ&#x201A;oss holder to help them get in and around teeth.

3. Preparing the Floss. Cut an 18-inch piece of ďŹ&#x201A;oss to use for ďŹ&#x201A;ossing a few teeth.

This allows you to make progress before you must stop and cut another piece of ďŹ&#x201A;oss.

4. How to Hold It. Wind the ends around your middle ďŹ ngers. Hold the ďŹ&#x201A;oss taut, pinching each side with your thumbs and index ďŹ ngers. Make sure to leave a couple inches free in the middle.

5. The Process of Flossing. Use your index ďŹ ngers to guide the ďŹ&#x201A;oss toward your gum line. Bring it down between the teeth with a zigzag motion. Hold the ďŹ&#x201A;oss in a C-shape around the tooth, and move it up and down along the side.

6. Where to Floss. Use a clean portion of the ďŹ&#x201A;oss to clean around and in between each tooth. Make sure you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget about the molars in the back of your mouth.

By Anthony RiďŹ lato All eyes will be on New York next Tuesday, April 19, when voters head to the polls in the ďŹ rst signiďŹ cant presidential primary in the state in nearly 30 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no question that this is the ďŹ rst time I can remember that the Democratic nomination is still in play,â&#x20AC;? said Nassau County Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t remember a case where both parties were competing so vigorously in the primary on the same day in New York.â&#x20AC;?

Even in relatively high-turnout years such as 2008, primaries attract far fewer voters than general elections, according to the Pew Research Center, but this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presidential primary coincides with a contest that could tip the balance of power in the state Senate: the special election for former Majority Leader Dean Skelosâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 9th District seat, vacated when Skelos was convicted of felony corruption charges in December.

Because voters will be offered two separate ballots, local party ofďŹ cials said that the presidential primary could potentially sway the outcome of the Senate race between Democratic Assemblyman Todd Kaminksy and Republican attorney Chris McGrath. Green Party candidate Laurence â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sethâ&#x20AC;? Hirsh is also on the ballot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The challenge for [McGrath and Kaminsky] is getting their message out in a short period of time and at a time when there is a presidential campaign that is not only eating up all the oxygen, but turning off a lot of people with all the negativity,â&#x20AC;? said Jim Moriarty, chairman of the Long Beach Republican Committees. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And that certainly poses a challenge for both candidates.â&#x20AC;?

Meanwhile, Republican Donald Trump is favored over Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home turf. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a toss-up now, because Bernie has

done so well and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all looking to New York to be a key swing state,â&#x20AC;? said Long Beach Democratic Chairman Rob Solomon.

According to the Nassau County Board of Elections, Democrats outnumber Republicans 41 percent to 33 percent in the 9th District, which encompasses Atlantic Beach, Baldwin, East Atlantic Beach, East Rockaway, Elmont,

the Five Towns, Franklin Square, Island Park, Lido Beach, Long Beach, Lynbrook, Malverne, Oceanside, Point Lookout, Rockville Centre, South Hempstead, Valley Stream and West Hempstead. There are 94,391 registered Democrats and 75,500 Republicans, David Gugerty, the boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Democratic commissioner, said. He added that just over 3,000 new voters have registered since January â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 1,390 Democrats, 735 Republicans, and those for other parties. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Democratic registrations are outpacing Republican registrations by nearly 2 to 1,â&#x20AC;? Gugerty said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will be reminding all registered voters in Senatorial District 9, regardless of party afďŹ liation, that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re entitled to vote in that special election.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have more Democrats and Republicans both coming out who want to be heard in the presidential primary, and hopefully theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get on the second line,â&#x20AC;? said Nassau County Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello, who endorsed Trump.

Both Moriarty and Solomon said the outcome of the Senate race could have a major impact on Long Island. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The real signiďŹ cance of this race â&#x20AC;&#x201D; when you peel away all of the individual issues that people care about â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is that if Todd, the control of the New York State Senate by the Republican majority is in jeopardy, and so are the interests of Long Island residents,â&#x20AC;? said Moriarty, adding that a Democratic-led Legislature would favor New York City interests. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There will be no checks and balances whatsoever.â&#x20AC;?

Solomon disagreed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Republicans, for 30 years, have been making the same argument,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They try to tie Democrats to New York City, but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see that ringing true anymore.â&#x20AC;?

By Jeffrey Bessen Leaders of the Marion & Aaron Gural JCC sent a 25-question survey to 3,500 members to gauge their interest in programs the Jewish Community Center should offer as it acquires the Temple Israel campus in Lawrence.

The JCC, based in Cedarhurst, offers programs and services ranging from camps for children, to groups for seniors and Holocaust survivors. JCC social workers help those with challenges such as traumatic brain injury and Parkinson’s disease.

The JCC which serves about 16,000 people a year at 18 different sites, according to Executive Director Joel Block, who succeeded Rina Shkolnik nearly three years ago.

“In order to serve the community, you need to understand the needs of the community,” Block said. “We wanted a sampling of the people, their needs, what they’re looking for — a wish list. JCCs look and feel different in every community. It is not a franchise. The reality of a JCC is it reflects the needs of the community, not the other way around.”

“We found that the JCC is a unifier in the community,” said Stacey Feldman, JCC director of development. “We meet their needs on a day-to-day schedule.”

The JCC survey found that teen programs and cultural arts topped the wish lists of most respondents. “Parents would like to see more volunteer opportunities and more structured, organized programs for the teenagers,” Block said.

Survey responders indicated that they want more trips to New York City, theater outings and movies, Block said. He noted the Singles Night the JCC sponsored in February, which dew 142 participants to Temple Israel.

The JCC had a relationship with the temple for several years — leasing space for its nursery school, several other classes and clubs and events — prior to entering into an agreement to purchase the campus last year.

To begin the planning process for new teen programs and more cultural arts offerings, Block wants to have discussions with the more engaged people who responded to the survey, as well as his board. “We want to talk about what they really want to see and road-test some ideas,” he said.

Announced in March of last year, the sale of the Central Avenue property is pending approval by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. A sale, mortgage or lease of a religious institution’s property that exceeds five years must be approved by the attorney general and then filed in state Civil Court for final approval.

JCC officials declined to reveal the purchase price. In 2010, Temple Israel signed a letter of intent to sell a half acre of its property, including two Fulton Street homes owned by the temple, to the Peninsula Public Library for between $2.5 million and $3 million. The library decided not to buy the land.

Block said that the JCC would continue to run many of its programs at the Grove Avenue building in Cedarhurst. He views the division at Temple Israel in thirds: the JCC, the temple and Carlyle Caterers, which provides the food and beverages to parties and other events booked at the temple.

“It is a wonderful benefit to the JCC to have the rich tradition, 107 years, of Temple Israel,” Block said, “and we hope we are deeply embedded together for years to come.”

W

hen we encounter the parshas of Tazria and Metzora, our thoughts typically run to lashon hara (speech that brings people down), which is argued by the Talmud (Arakhin 15-16) to be the main impetus for the Biblical punishment of tzaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;at afďŹ&#x201A;icting a person back in the day (the seven causes of tzaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;at will be discussed below).

The word metzora, which describes the person carrying the disease of tzaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;at, is noted by the midrash and many commentaries as being a condensed form of the words motzi ra (to bring out evil). Most will say that the idea of being motzi ra is meant to be the result of having tzaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;at, that the person with the ailment gets the message as delivered through this G-d-sent spiritual disease, and makes a conscious decision to remove the evil-from-within which caused the person to sin.

But there is also the possibility that the problem facing the metzora, and one of the reasons why the disease comes, is because the sin also brings out the bad in others. How does a victim of lashon hora (slander and

gossip) respond to people talking about him?

Murder sometimes causes others to murder in vengeance. Swearing in vain promotes a culture in which people are not careful about their speech. For sins of immorality â&#x20AC;&#x201D; if it only took one to tango, perhaps it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bring out the evil in others.

But it takes two to tango.

Haughtiness or stinginess of the sinner causes others to feel belittled, to get angry, or to experience jealousy. Thievery may cause vigilantism, with people taking the law into their own hands.

And so, perhaps, we can all beneďŹ t from asking ourselves if we are doing our part to bring the best out of people, or are we, heaven forfend, bringing out the worst in others? All questions presented are being asked in no particular order. And yes, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking to myself. arents: Do we encourage our children to make good decisions? Do we allow them to make bad decisions, so they can learn from their mistakes? Do we compliment them when they do well, so they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t only hear criticism from us? Do we put them up much more than we put them down? Do we make reasonable demands â&#x20AC;&#x201D; religiously,

academically? Do we express our disappointment with love and care, while explaining why sometimes bad choices, or irresponsibility, may have fair and reasonable consequences? Are we overly-sarcastic (when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a symptom of a senseof-humor we share with our children)? Do we do our part to improve our own parenting skills â&#x20AC;&#x201D; such as developing more patience, controlling our anger, learning the art of communication, and realizing that we teach more by example than anything else?

Teachers and educators: All the parenting questions. Plus. (Parents: We can all read these too!) Do we have patience for children who learn differently, and at different paces?

Do we recognize the differences that make each child unique? Do we know how to recognize the beauty in each child? Do we know how to tap into a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strengths? Are we able to encourage creativity, and not stiďŹ&#x201A;e it?

Rabbis: Do we encourage positive speech and respectful dialogue in our shuls? Do we respect the fact that our members may have different political views, religious backgrounds, spiritual expectations and needs? Do we re-

Are we doing our part to bring the best out of people, or are we bringing out the worst?

member to be cautious of the rules of lashon hora when dealing with different personalities and the ways in which they sometimes conďŹ&#x201A;ict in shul operations? Do we challenge those who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t normally serve as bal-teďŹ llah or read the Torah to take a time-slot and take the lead of the davening? Do we encourage others to give a dvar torah in settings in which that would be acceptable (it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always have to be the rabbi!) such as at a shalom zachar, seudah shlishit, Shavuos night?

Everyone not in these leadership roles: Are we good friends? Do we encourage good behaviors? Do we know when to set limits, to pull back and say, this conversation is not for me, these activities are not for me, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t agree with these decisions? Do we know when to say Yes and when to say No? Are we supportive when we need to be? For those with really close relationships, are we able express to our friends when we feel theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing things that are harmful to themselves or their children? Are we willing to listen (even if we disagree) when a friend raises points the friend is concerned about?

For all: Are we there for each other in the labyrinth of life?

May we all be blessed to be a motzi tov (one who brings out the good) in ourselves and in others, especially in those we love and care about the most.

Understanding the name â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Shabbat Hagadolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; RABBI DAVID ETENGOFF

L

ike many other meforshim (Torah commentators), the second Bobover Rebbe, HaRav Ben-Zion Halberstam zatzal, analyzed the term Shabbat Hagadol. He began his quest for understanding with Tosafotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous statement that appears in Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 87b s.v. vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;oto: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reason why we call the Shabbat before Passover, Shabbat Hagadol, is because of the great miracle (nes gadol) that took place on that day in accordance with the words of the Midrash: When the Jewish people took their paschal lambs on that very Shabbat, all of the ďŹ rst born sons of the nations of the world gathered together before the Jewish people and asked them: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Why are you doing this?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; The Jewish people responded: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;This is a Passover offering to Hashem Who will go forth and kill the ďŹ rst born of the Egyptians.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; They [the ďŹ rst born of the Egyptians] went before their fathers and Pharaoh to ask them to send forth the Jewish people and they refused. As a result, the ďŹ rst born of the Egyptians started a war and killed many of them.

Thus the text states: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;To Him Who smote the Egyptians with [at the hands of] their ďŹ rstbornâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;? (Tehillim 136:10, this and all Bible and Rashi translations from The Judaica Press Complete Tanach, brackets my own)

At this juncture, Rav Halberstam presented a classic question that was asked by many commentators on Tosafotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s above-stated explanation: â&#x20AC;&#x153;If this is the case [that we are commemorating a great miracle], this Shabbat should have been called Shabbat HaNes (Shabbat of the Miracle) and, therefore, what is the relevance of the name Shabbat Hagadol? (the Great Shabbat).

(Kedushat Tzion, Pesach, Shabbat Hagadol, new edition, page 57) Rav Halberstam answered this question by pointing his readers to the Mechilta dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Rabbi Yishmael, the halachic Midrash on Sefer Shemot: â&#x20AC;&#x153;And I will be gloriďŹ ed through Pharaohâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;? (Sefer Shemot 14:4) â&#x20AC;&#x153;The text is telling us that when the Omnipresent One punishes the [evil] nations of the world, His name becomes greater (shemo mitgadel) throughout the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As it is said: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;And I will place a sign upon them, and I will send from them refugees to the nations, Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, the distant islands, who did not hear of My fame and did not see My glory, and they shall recount My glory among the nations.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; (Sefer Yeshayahu 66:19).â&#x20AC;? (Parashat Beshalach, Mesechta dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Vahayah, Parasha 1)

ashi also focused on this Midrash in his exegesis of Sefer Shemot 14:4, and summarized some of its other verses in the following manner: â&#x20AC;&#x153;And I will be gloriďŹ ed through Pharaoh: When the Holy One blessed be He wreaks vengeance upon the wicked, His name becomes magniďŹ ed and gloriďŹ ed. So it [Scripture] says: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;And I will judge against him, etc.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and afterwards [the prophet says], â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;And I will magnify and sanctify Myself and I will be known, etc.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; (Sefer Yechezkel 38:22-23) And [Scripture similarly] says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;There he broke the arrows of the bow,â&#x20AC;? [which refers to Sennacheribâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defeat,] and afterwards [i.e., the result of that], â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;G-d is known in Judahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (Tehillim 76:2,4) And [Scripture similarly] says: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The L-rd is known for the judgment that He performed.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; (Tehillim 9:17).â&#x20AC;?

In my estimation, the Mechilta, Rashi, and by extension, Rav Halberstam, are teaching us a powerful chidush (novel idea) regarding the name Shabbat Hagadol. Instead of translating it as the Great Shabbat, as the words taken at face value readily suggest, we need to translate it as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Shabbat of the Great One,â&#x20AC;? namely the One and Only, Melech malchei hamelachim (King of kings), the Holy One blessed be He. As Rav Halberstam so beautifully explained: â&#x20AC;&#x153;According to this [the Mechilta], it is completely

proper that we call this Shabbat, Shabbat Hagadol, since at that time, Hashem rendered judgment against the evil ones and thereby magniďŹ ed [and sanctiďŹ ed] His Name, may it be blessed, in the Universe.â&#x20AC;? Truly, then, this Shabbat is the Shabbat of the Great One. Today we ďŹ nd ourselves on the cusp of Pesach and the Seder. My rebbe and mentor, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, zatzal, described this exalted night of all nights as the time when we are intoxicated by our love for the Almighty. As such, and with Hashemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s help, may our new understanding of Shabbat Hagadol lead us to even greater depths of appreciation of His mercy, kindness and beneďŹ cence, so that we may grow ever stronger in our love for Him. Israeli trade winds blowing in American Midwest

By Maayan Jaffe-Hoffman Ask the average Israeli where he or she has visited in the United States, and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll likely get New York, Los Angeles, or Washington, DC. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beginning to change. According to Guy Cohen, Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consul for economic affairs to the Midwest, substantial economic collaborations are emerging between the American heartland and the State of Israel.

In March, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon led a delegation of state ofďŹ cials on a trade mission to Israel. The visit was focused on strengthening partnerships, increasing exports, and recruiting new high-tech foreign investment to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Show Me State.â&#x20AC;?

This week, from Missouriâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neighbor of Kansas, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer joins a handful of other regional governors on a similar trade mission. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It sometimes kind of surprises people,â&#x20AC;? Colyer told JNS. org regarding his stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ties with the Jewish state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israel is an important business relationship for us. A lot of things are happening here.â&#x20AC;?

In 2015, Kansas exported around $75 million worth of goods to Israel, according to Colyer, and imported more than $80 million, according to the International Trade Administration. Missouri imported more than $161 million from Israel, Iowa just more than $91 million, and Indiana around $109 million.

Consul Cohen explained that Midwest states are rarely home to the huge high-tech companies, such as Google, that will harness Israeli startup technologies in the products they sell or even acquire the Israeli start-ups (like Google acquired the Waze navigation app). Rather, Midwest companies tend to use Israeli technologies to help them run their own businessesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; for internal use. The top industry in the Midwest tends to be agriculture, but there are niche markets in nearly each of the 13 states that Cohen covers: in Michigan, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s automotive; in Indiana (particularly the city of Indianapolis), cyber-security; in North Dakota, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs); in Kansas (particularly the city of Wichita), aerospace; among others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a lot of states that are big manufacturing hubs,â&#x20AC;? said Cohen. He noted that nanomanufacturingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the production of nanoscaled materials, such as powders or ďŹ&#x201A;uids that have practical applications for laser engravingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;â&#x20AC;&#x153;is becoming importantâ&#x20AC;? in the Midwest, and that he expects to see some new Israel-Midwest deals in that area soon.

Rubin said GlobalSTL looks for more mature Israeli companies that have been vetted by third-party investors and customers to set up their North American presence in St. Louis. Four Israeli companies have launched businesses in St. Louis in the last 18 months, and GlobalSTL has a pipeline of 122 active Israeli prospects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This helps strengthen the St. Louis ecosystem and builds a pipeline of robust, innovation-based ventures,â&#x20AC;? said Rubin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israel has one of the largest concentrations of innovation-based enterprises in the world.â&#x20AC;?

Rubin explained that his method is a demand-driven approach. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We work with major companies, health systems, [and] banks here to understand what their innovation agenda is and

develop a shopping list of technologies and innovations these companies would be interested in,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We seek those Israeli companies that are in demand.â&#x20AC;?

During his recent visit to Israel, Missouriâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nixon met with the Mobileye vision technology company, a global leader in advanced collision-avoidance systems. He said that Kansas City, Mo., is a ďŹ nalist for a $40-million smart city grant for transportation. If the city receives the grant in June 2016, it can use Mobileye to help carry through its smart city transportation commitments. On his trip, the governor called Israel â&#x20AC;&#x153;a beacon of democracy and a vital partner.â&#x20AC;?

Giving a non-Midwest perspective, Barry Bogageâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;executive director of the Maryland/Israel Development Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;said the key to recruiting Israeli companies to your state is â&#x20AC;&#x153;to just constantly be there.â&#x20AC;? Bogage, whose organization promotes bilateral trade and investment to help create jobs in Maryland and Israel, has a representative on the ground in Israel. Bogage or one of his staffers attend all major Israeli cyber-technology, biotechnology, and other technology conferences. He ensures that when an Israeli delegation comes to the Maryland area, he gets the right people to meet with the companies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just that constant presence,â&#x20AC;? he said.

For states in the Midwestâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;who have more limited budgets and fewer human resources than their prominent counterparts on either coast, such as New York and Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;that can be a greater challenge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are a non-proďŹ t with limited resources,â&#x20AC;? said St. Louisbased Rubin.

The other challenge is awareness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most Israelis know the East and the West, and not much in between,â&#x20AC;? Rubin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My expectation was that it might take a couple of years to build awareness before we could have any real successes. But our work has far succeeded expectations.â&#x20AC;?

In fact, St. Louis recently beat out Maryland in securing the presence of Forrest Innovations, an Israel company that focuses on reducing mosquito-vectored diseases and reducing citrus greening, a devastating bacterial disease that is wreaking havoc in the major citrus-producing regions of the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The company representative came, and we had an Israeli real estate agent take him and his family around,â&#x20AC;? said Rubin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They fell in love and they are delighted to be here.â&#x20AC;?

am hearing of this type of Israeli tragedy too often. A young, post-IDF hiker dies while trekking in Peru. G-d forbid a car accident or a shooting, but wholesome granola-crunching trekking?! You think of the outdoors as putting you being in touch with nature and inspiration, not with death.

Shira Roth’s final words are chilling. They are recorded for posterity in a WhatsApp message: “Ima, I am feeling my systems collapsing and shutting down completely. Today was disastrous. I feel like I am about to die.”

Shira did, on a long bus ride to a hospital.

Meanwhile, her mother in Israel responded to her daughter’s message with these now tragic words: “I hope that by the time you are reading this you have already recovered and are OK. From what I understand, this sickness is due to elevation. Now you’ll be returning to Lima. Feel good § § §” The more I learn about this youthful Israeli hiking culture the more worrisome it becomes. These young kids shoulder more responsibility and pressure than anyone ever should — literally life and death situations and decision; the idea of their traveling and trekking as a healing release, as a restorative journey, is a wonderful one.

But despite their unusual set of experiences, at the end of the day we are talking about still somewhat immature young adults who might be influenced by peer pressure.

hiker, the resulting pressure can yield poor decisions, such as pushing past real limits in order to keep up. I don’t know that that was the case with Shira Roth, but this tragedy is an opportunity to review hiking safety. ummiting a mountain is one of the greatest experiences, feeling on top of the world, sometimes amid the clouds, catching your breath from scenery below that seems as though it was placed there just for you. You feel at once the peace and the power of the world. This kind of solitary ascent sometimes is the only thing that can renew you.

With “Fourteener” season almost upon us in Colorado, where the lure of 14,000-foot mountains offers a challenging adventure, here is a brief summary of basic safety practices for an enjoyable hiking season.

As you ascend higher than 8,000 feet above sea level, the air pressure decreases.

With decreased air pressure comes decreased oxygen. The body can adapt to this, but it takes time. So don’t rush it. Ascend gradually. Be careful of elevation gains. Don’t make sharp altitudinal changes. It is dangerous.

For a prolonged trek, be sure to sleep at an elevation of a minimum of 10,000 feet for

at least one night prior to a long trek. Acclimatization is key. Slow acclimatization is even better. More than endurance training and preparation, which is important, acclimatization is even more important. Ultimately, there is no way to prepare for high altitude hiking other than acclimatizing and adapting the body to the new environment of decreased oxygen.

Everyone’s body reacts differently. A length of time that works for one person may not be enough for another. Pay attention to your own body and pace yourself accordingly.

Bring warm clothes. Temperatures drop fast. It gets freezing up there!

Keep yourself hydrated.

If it’s not working out and you feel altitude sickness coming on, or hitting you fast, don’t be a hero. Don’t push on. If you’ve reached this point, the only thing to do is to turn around and descend the mountain. The descent may save your life.

Those awe inspiring moments with your heart pounding as you summit a mountain, or stand at a cliff’s edge feeling like you are standing at the edge of the world, are incredible. But hike safely in order to keep that heart pounding long after the inspiration has faded, long after the descent.

Until the next time, safely and gradually: Keep hiking. Keep trekking. Keep enjoying.

How is Israel really perceived in the world arena? What are some of the core challenges Israel faces in diplomacy? What can we do to support Israel during these challenging times?

These are some of the questions that the lobbying committee of the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls discussed in a recent audience with Ambassador Ron Dermer, Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s man in Washington.

A delegation of ďŹ ve students â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Rachel Ash, Zahava Gros, Shoshana Rockoff, Gabrielle Spirgel and Michal Yacker â&#x20AC;&#x201D; accompanied by Grades 9â&#x20AC;&#x201C;10 Principal Raizi Chechik, visited Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ambassador to the United States, in Washington, on April 4. Everyone in the embassy wore blue and white and spoke Hebrew, which really added to the Israeli atmosphere.

We asked Ambassador Dermer many questions about Israel and what we can do as American citizens to help the Jewish state.

Ambassador Dermer discussed the recent rise of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism and stressed the importance of fact-checking information about Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portrayal in the media.

He shared stories about his experiences as a senior adviser to Prime Minister Netanyahu and as ambassador, and maintained how we must be grateful that we are held to a higher standard than the rest of the world, as it means that they recognize that the Jewish people are the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s moral compass.

bassador expressed was that we are all â&#x20AC;&#x153;ambassadorsâ&#x20AC;? of Israel in our own way and represent the Jewish people and the Jewish state with everything we do or say. All our actions

DRS says NO to BDS On Monday, DRS hosted Anti-BDS Day to raise awareness about the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which seeks to delegitimize and economically isolate the State of Israel.

Coordinated by the yeshivaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Israel Advocacy Club, Anti-BDS Day educated the student body about the need to both support Israel ďŹ nancially as well as to prepare to defend the Jewish homeland on college campuses.

To kick off the program, students watched a video presentation on BDS by Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz. After the presen-

tation, Israel Advocacy co-coordinators senior Michael Fagin and sophomore Dubi Fischman addressed the student body, highlighting the importance of understanding BDS and how to combat it.

The Israel Advocacy Club prepared and distributed pamphlets detailing many of the inaccuracies and falsehoods perpetuated by the deleterious movement. Throughout the day, club members sold Israeli food products, encouraging economic support of Israel.

More than $850 was raised and all of the proceeds will be donated to the non-proďŹ t organization StandWithUs to further combat the BDS movement.

can have an extraordinary impact on viewpoints and feelings about Israel.

Ambassador Dermer also related a story about a meeting he had with New Jersey Rep.

Albio Sires, in which he tried to persuade him to oppose the Iran nuclear deal. Rep. Sires expressed his appreciation to the Jewish community which allowed him, as a young boy, to play basketball in their gym on Shabbat as they were praying upstairs. He said that while he opposed the deal on its merits, he will forever be pro-Israel because of this encounter.

Expressing our gratitude to the ambassador, we presented him with a plaque engraved with the words, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Im eskachech Yerushalyim.â&#x20AC;?

After this fascinating meeting, we headed back to the hotel to debrief and discuss our experience. We then headed to Capitol Hill to meet with South Shore Rep. Kathleen Riceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legislative assistant, Liz Amster, to discuss the congresswomanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing support for Israel and what it is like being a woman in the world of politics.

One of the interns then took us on an informative tour of the Capitol building and we were able to enter the House Chamber where Netanyahu gave his address to Congress. After having dinner in Silver Springs, Maryland, we headed back to New York on a high from our whirlwind day.

We were inspired by Ambassador Dermerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s words and his wisdom, and feel fortunate to have him as the representative for our country and our people. We are also grateful for Rep. Riceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support of Israel.

We were all ďŹ lled with pride for our homeland and motivated to continue to do what we can for Israel in the future. Thank you, Ms. Chechik, and the SKA administration for coordinating this incredible trip.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drama at YUHS

At the beginning of the spring semester, the PTACH Program at the Yeshiva University High School for Girls instituted a theater program led

by Leah Gottfried.

The programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal is not performance based, but rather to conduct a skills workshop for students to improve their self-conďŹ dence, convey their creativity, and improve their expressive language skills. Ms. Gottfried uses improvisation and scene study to accomplish these goals.

Students who rarely feel comfortable expressing their opinion, or are too shy to speak publicly, can really beneďŹ t by partaking in an improvised scene or using a new voice during roleplay. Participating in a theater program can

help a student open up their thinking and improve communication.

Rachel, a theater student, commented that she ďŹ nds the acting exercises to be creative and relaxing. Tovah says that it is a way for her to express herself and have fun. According to Sara, acting opened up her true self.

Together with PTACHâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speech and language component, the combined purpose is to foster better self-expression, collaboration and communication. If nothing else, as Tovah says, theater class is just plain old fun!

Over 50 eighth graders displayed their science projects at the annual HALB Science Fair on April 6. Projects ranging from probiotics to cavitation, insulation to microwave radiation, filled the Beit Midrash.

The students explained their work to judges who determined their worthiness to participate in the Yeshiva Science Congress, hosted by HALB in early May. Winners this year were Z. Bach (Cavitation), Y. Saffra (In the Blink of an Eye), G. Aharon (Thawing Methods and Bacterial Growth), E. Haller (How Seed Irradiation Affects Plant Growth) and N. Haller (Probiotics on Plant Growth).

Kudos to all the young researchers who did an amazing job of taking a science concept and using scientific methods to find meaningful results.

Pesach fun at library The Levi Yitzchak Library in Cedarhurst has been busy with Pesach activities, including a grand Pesach carnival. The children had a marvelous time “Escaping Egypt,” bringing the spirit of Pesach to life in a fun, magical way.

Continuing with Pesach fun, toddlers in the A Little Curious Mommy and Me program made their first, personalized Counting Haggadah.

The LY Library is excited to annouce that the Small Wonder Puppet Theater will return on Wednesday, April 20 (two days before Pesach), at 2 pm.

HAFTR students return from Poland, Germany Twenty-four students from the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway recently returned from a visit to the Machanot Hashmada and Mekomos Hakedoshim in Germany and Poland.

On this third annual Abraham Scharf Z”l mission, students learned about the vibrant Jewish life in Europe before the Shoah, about both Churban Europa and the Gevura (the destruction as well as the strength of the Jewish people), and about current Jewish life in Germany and Poland.

The first stop in Berlin Germany was davening in a shul which the Nazis, ym”s, used as a storage house. What a moment it was when the Torah was raised by Haggba in the same place where the Nazis tried to eradicate the Jewish people and history. The group next went to a deportation station from which the kedoshom were sent to their final destination.

The group arrived in Poland by air, spending next three days learning about some of the great Chassidic dynasties that originated there, and viewing firsthand the destruction wrought upon our nation at Auschwitz, Birkenau, Majdanek and Treblinka.

At Birkenau, standing in front of a pond with ashes of the kedoshim near the crematorium, Rabbi Gedaliah Oppen, HAFTR’s principal, made a siyum in memory of Abe Scharf z”l and all of the six million kedoshim, H”yd.

In Majdanek, on the pit where thousands of men, women and children were murdered al Kiddush Hashem, once again a siyum was made and kaddish was recited by the grandson of one of the kedoshim who were murdered in Majdaniek.

At Treblinka, which the Nazis, ym”s, completely destroyed and attempted to turn it into a farm to hide evidence of their murder, another student spoke about her family members who were murdered in Treblinka and a siyum was made by Rabbi Boruch Oppen in memory of the kedoshim.

In Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, a member of the group made a siyum on Masechta Yevamos, and in Krakow, on the day of her 81st yahrtzeit, the group visited the site of Rebbetzin Sarah Schenirer’s first Bais Yaakov, as well as her kever. Mrs. Yehudis Oppen addressed the group, sharing stories of inspiration and the importance of education for Jewish women.

An amazing moment occurred when the students sat with a 93 year old woman — who has a Chasidei Umos HaOlem award from Yad Vishem — who, with her parents helped save 17 yidden during the war. In this emotional meeting, arranged because one of the students was a grandchild of some of those who were saved, the 93-year-old retold the story, describing details of the experiences during that terrible time.

Tuesday night they were led into the woods to Zbilotowska Gura, a mass children’s grave. Wednesday night the group stood in the forest and davened by the kever of the Kutzker Rebbi.

On Thursday, in the city of Tykochin, they saw the beautiful shul built in 1642 and then went to the Lupochowo forest, where the entire Jewish community of Tykocin were gunned down and buried in three huge pits.

On their last day in Poland, the group davened at the kevarim of tzaddikim buried in Warsaw, visited the ghetto wall, Zlota Street, Umshlagplatz and Rappaport monument, and had dinner at Chabad of Warsaw. They

Mitzvah helps a Shoah survivor As Jews, all of us have suffered in some ways as it relates to the Holocaust. Many of us have relatives that are survivors and others would like to help survivors, but are not sure how.

HAFTR student and Five Towns resident Elana Milberg figured out a way. As part of her Bat Mitzvah project, Elana coordinated a Basketball-A-Thon last Sunday in the HAFTR Gym on Frost Lane, assisted by some of her siblings (HAFTR alum Ori and student Rani). With help from the HAFTR and Camp Lavi families, $1,000 was raised.

The survivor mitzvah project provides direct financial aid to elderly Holocaust survivors in remote areas of Eastern Europe and Ukraine. They are in desperate need of food, medicine, suitable shelter, and loving kindness. Most are sole survivors of families murdered by the Nazis, many are the last Jews in their town or village, some are survivors of the

killing fields, some fought with the Russians or as Partisans in the forests of Belarus, and some were slaves in the Gulag long after the war ended. All are elderly, alone and isolated, they do not receive WWII reparation funds from Germany.

Elana’s project raised money for Mariya (her Yiddish name is Manya), a child during the Holocaust. Her family (except for her mother and siblings) were killed, her grandparents burned alive. She lives alone in Belarus in one small room.

She has a lot of health problems due to starvation and lack of medical care throughout her life. Currently she is in need of funds for operations on both of her eyes as she is going blind.

travelled to Sochotchov and Ger, hearing words of chizuk, shiurim and history lessons at each site.

One such lesson was a quote from the Haggadah: We say “vehi she’amdah la’avoseinu — this is what helped our fathers and us when in every generation our enemies rise against us.”

The mefarshim explain the word “vehi” to be an acronym of the six Sidrei Mishnah (Torah shebe’al peh); the five Chumashim (Torah shebiksav); the Aseres Hadibros; and Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Throughout history, Torah has been our salvation. By adhering to the Torah, we can — and have — overcome our enemies, time and again. At many of the sites visited, the students spontaneously erupted into that very song – “Ve’hi She’amdah,” as well as “Hatikva” and “Ani Maamin.”

The mission was led by Rabbis Gedaliah and Boruch Oppen and Rabbis Mosher Hubner and Boruch Oppen, together with Mrs. Yehudis Oppen, Yehuda Mosesson, and Dr. Marvin Wertinteil.

Fourth grade girls at Manhattan Day School celebrated the mitzvah of simchat kallah (making a bride happy on her wedding day).

There were many preparations. First, the girls held a Hoop-a-Thon, a class venture designed to raise money for the kallah. Each girl had a chance to shoot a basketball for two minutes to try to make as many baskets as she could. The girls secured sponsors for each basket they made and collectively raised $2,500. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I called my grandmother and asked her to sponsor me, she said sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d give me $100 and an additional $10 for every hoop,â&#x20AC;? said Jordana Posner. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was so excited â&#x20AC;&#x201D; my face went blank!â&#x20AC;?

The money was sent to Keren Simchas Chosson Vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Kallah (KSCVK), a fund dedicated to bringing joy to grooms and brides. KSCVK enables couples to get married with dignity and, insofar as possible, makes their wedding dreams come true. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t slept in days because I was so excited for this wedding,â&#x20AC;? said Devorah Deutsch.

When the big day arrived, the girls traveled from Manhattan to Crown Heights just as the chatan and kallah and their families were taking pictures, and they quickly found their seats in the hall. When the music grew louder, they set up ďŹ&#x201A;oral arches that they made for the wedding. They were ecstatic to see the happy kallah dance through them.

The girls, together with their parent chaperones, danced in one big circle around the kallah while she held a decorative umbrella that they had created for her. Afterward, the girls had an opportunity to take photos and talk to the kallah on her special day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still on a high from last night,â&#x20AC;? said Limor Gutkind, mom of Aurielle Gutkind, the day after the wedding.

The girls were happy to have participated in this simcha and look forward to dancing at many future weddings.
