Following the preliminary vote by the Knesset, the bill will be combined with a Justice Ministry version. The ministry has 60 days to draft its own version.

“The Nationality Law is critical in a time like this, when elements from within and without are trying to reject the Jewish people’s right to a national home in its country and the recognition of the State of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people,” said Likud party lawmaker Avi Dicther, who first proposed the legislation, according to Ynet.

“The Palestinian aspiration to eliminate the Jewish people’s nation-state is no longer secret.

The State of Israel, which demands of its enemies to recognize it as the nation-state of the Jewish people and justifiably asks its supporters in the world to back this demand, needs to be able to declare in its highest legislative level that it proudly maintains this identify.”

Joint Arab List party head Ayman Odeh in a statement following the vote called the committee’s approval of the bill a “declaration of war” on Israel’s Arab citizens.

“Discrimination has received a legal stamp,” he said.

“The danger in this law in that is establishes two classes of citizen — Jewish and Arab.”

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli government ministers this week approved a bill that would officially define Israel as a Jewish state.

The legislation unanimously passed the Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Sunday and was scheduled to get a preliminary hearing by the full Knesset on Wednesday. A similar bill was first proposed in 2011 and again in 2015.

This so-called Nationality Law is intended to serve as Basic Law, similar to a constitutional law, and would declare Israel the nation-state of the Jewish people. It addresses national symbols, including the flag and the national anthem, the right of return for Jews, holy sites and the Hebrew calendar. It also calls for the government to work to strengthen ties between Israel and Diaspora Jewry.

According to the legislation, “every resident of Israel, without distinction of religion or national origin, is entitled to work to preserve his culture, heritage, language and identity.”

The bill would demote Arabic from an official language to one with special status, though government services would still have to be available in the language.

Macron and his Jewish supporters may collide

By Cnaan Liphshiz, JTA PARIS — French Jews may have voted en masse for Emmanuel Macron in the final round of France’s presidential elections, but that doesn’t make him their dream president.

Like many other supporters of the 39-yearold former investment banker, who on Sunday became the youngest French president in recent history, Jews voted for Macron mainly to block his far-right opponent, Marine Le Pen. The centrist won with 65 percent of the vote to 34 percent for Le Pen. Leaders of French Jewry said they were relieved and even “happy” to see Macron elected — but the honeymoon may be short lived.

A self-declared progressive with a foreign policy rooted in human rights, Macron even during the campaign demonstrated that like his Socialist predecessor, Francois Hollande, he is willing to clash over Israel and Islamism with the conservative and pro-Israel mainstream of French Jewry.

In a town hall meeting on March 22 with hundreds of Jewish voters Macron, an independent politician who had served for two years as Hollande’s industry minister, showed why he and the Jewish mainstream may be on a collision course over Israel and Muslim extremism.

For the first 90 minutes of the meeting, sponsored by the the CRIF Jewish federation, Macron discussed his economic vision lucidly and in great detail. Juggling data and well-chosen anecdotes, he was clearly in his element as he explained his support for free-market labor reforms, greater cooperation with Germany and no new taxes on corporations’ revenue-producing capital.

But then he turned to foreign policy — a weaker subject for the wunderkind who became the first candidate in decades to win a presidential election in France without the support of its main political parties.

To his evident surprise, the promise of continuity did not sit well with his listeners, whose hisses and booing forced him to pause.

“Oh, no?” he mumbled in surprise when the booing started. “Perhaps it’s not your policy, but it is mine,” he said in the unapologetic style that helped him through debates with more seasoned speakers, including former Prime Minister Francois Fillon of The Republicans and the fiery far-left candidate, Jean-Luc Melenchon.

Macron’s attempts to appease the audience by proclaiming his attachment to Israel’s security “as well as to the two-state solution” did not seem to have a particularly mollifying effect.

Apparently unwittingly, he touched one of the raw nerves of French Jewry under Hollande, who has led a firm line — and according to some critics at times even a hostile one – on Israel.

Leaders of French Jewry were especially angry when France voted last year in favor of at least two resolutions by UNESCO, the cultural body of the United Nations, that ignored Judaism’s attachment to Jerusalem. Unusually, the country’s chief rabbi, Haim Korsia, issued a written condemnation of the votes.

CRIF condemned France’s failed bid earlier this year to stage a Middle East peace conference in Paris without Israel’s support. Hollande said France was organizing the conference out of a commitment to peace and as a “friend of Israel,” but CRIF President Francis Kalifat clearly had his doubts.

“Some pretend to be Israel’s friend, but there is no such thing as friendship: There are proofs of friendship,” Kalifat said at a protest rally in January against the summit.

Israel’s refusal to attend the conference ultimately led the Palestinians to pull out. CRIF called the ensuing summit a “grotesque” event in light of international inaction on the wholesale slaughter of civilians in Syria.

French Jewry’s mainstream also objected to France’s leading role within the European Union in singling out Israeli West Bank settlements and their products, and to Socialist Party lawmakers who supported a unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood.

During the town hall meeting, Macron said that like Hollande, he would recognize a Palestinian state only after a negotiated settlement agreed upon by Israel and the Palestinians.

Then there are fears that Macron’s tolerancedriven agenda is too accommodating to Muslim fundamentalists. Many French Jews perceive Islamism as the main threat facing their communities following a string of deadly jihadist at-

tacks on Jewish and non-Jewish targets.

In Macron’s official platform, he speaks of “fighting with determination against all radical streams that distort the values” of Islam. But whereas Le Pen and the right-of-center Fillon proposed concrete punitive steps, including revoking the French nationality of radicals and deporting them, Macron has remained vague, proposing to conduct the fight by “helping French Muslims to achieve the [restructuring] of their institutions.”

Sensing he was losing the audience’s affection, Macron told the CRIF crowd, “Hang on, I can return to the UNESCO vote, which is a different matter.” He added: “It’s a mistake and I condemn it.” But Macron also insisted that the UNESCO vote was a technical glitch, provoking more dismissive boos and laughter from dozens of listeners and an intervention by Kalifat.

“Yes, but there were two votes, Mr. Macron,” Kalifat said. “They were definitely not unintentional.”

Macron also infuriated prominent members of the French Jewish community when he visited a Holocaust monument during the last stretch of the campaign. Although the visit was meant to draw a contrast with the Holocaust denial roots of Le Pen’s party, the prominent French-Jewish philosopher Alain Finkielkraut said Macron’s actions turned the genocide into a “campaign argument.”

Regardless of their differences, Macron is someone French Jews can respect, according to Philippe Karsenty, a French Jewish politician and pro-Israel activist.

“I disagree with him on many issue — Israel, his vision of French history,” Karsenty told JTA. “I think he’s too naïve, like former U.S. President Barack Obama or Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. But his background is in banking, in business. He’s accomplished. And he understands the power of compromise.”

Happy Israeli minister: Peace plan won’t fly

Bernie Sanders just defended Israel on Al Jazeera Analysis by Ron Kampeas, JTA WASHINGTON — In an appearance on Al Jazeera, Bernie Sanders defended Israel’s right to exist, rejected BDS as a tactic and assailed the United Nations for singling out the country for condemnation.

The Vermont senator’s interview Wednesday on the Qatarbased network, known for its often hypercritical coverage of Israel, was consistent with a style that Americans came to know last year during his run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination: Sanders does not modify his messaging for his audience.

Sanders, despite his defeat in the primaries to Hillary Clinton, who went on to lose to Donald Trump, remains the standard-bearer of the American left. His robust rejection of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is evidence that a firewall remains on the American left against more radical expressions of Israel criticism that have gained traction overseas.

The interviewer, Dena Takruri, challenged Sanders for joining every other U.S. senator last month in signing a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging him to remedy the body’s “anti-Israel agenda.”

Takruri asked why Sanders was “effectively trying to shield [Israel] from criticism.” Sanders interrupted, “No, no, no, no, no, I don’t accept that,” saying “there are many problems with Israel” and he would continue to “be critical of a lot of what Israel does.”

“On the other hand, to see Israel attacked over and over again for human rights violations which may be true, when you have countries like Saudi Arabia or Syria, Saudi Arabia – I’m not quite sure if a woman can even drive a car today,” Sanders said.

“So I think the thrust of that letter is not to say that Israel does not have human rights issues — it does — but to say how come it’s only Israel when you have other countries where women are treated as third-class citizens, where in Egypt, I don’t know how many thousands of people now lingering in jail, so that’s the point of that, not to defend Israel but to say why only Israel, you want to talk about human rights, let’s talk about human rights,” he said.

Asked by Takruri whether he “respected” BDS as a legitimate nonviolent protest movement, Sanders said, “No, I don’t.”

The senator suggested in his reply that the tactic was counterproductive as a means of bringing the sides to peace talks.

“People will do what they want to do, but I think our job as a nation is to do everything humanly possible to bring Israel and the Palestinians and the entire Middle East to the degree that we can together, but no, I’m not a supporter of that,” he said.

“What must be done is that the United States of America is to have a Middle East policy which is even-handed, which does not simply supply endless amounts of money, of military support to Israel, but which treats both sides with respect and dignity and does our best to bring them to the table.”

Sanders also rejected Takruri’s assertion that the two-state solution is almost dead and said he would not embrace a onestate solution.

“I think if that happens, then that would be the end of the State of Israel and I support Israel’s right to exist,” he said.

“I think if there is the political will to make it happen and if

there is good faith on both sides I do think it’s possible, and I think there has not been good faith, certainly on this Israeli government and I have my doubts about parts of the Palestinian leadership as well.”

Sanders, the first Jewish candidate to win major party nominating contests, was critical of conventional pro-Israel postures during the campaign, but also defended the state.

He told MSNBC last year that anti-Semitism was a factor driving the BDS movement, yet in a debate in the New York primary — with its critical mass of Jewish voters — Sanders chided Clinton for barely mentioning Palestinians in her speech earlier the same year to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

During the campaign, he hired as his Jewish outreach staffer Simone Zimmerman, who founded IfNotNow, which protests mainstream U.S. Jewish silence on Israel’s occupation. Although Sanders fired Zimmerman after her vulgar postings on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to light, the very hiring was a signal that there was now a political home for young Jews who claim to embrace the idea of Israel but were willing to robustly protest its government’s actions.

Sanders also named prominent Israel critics to the Democrats platform-drafting committee, yet when their Israel-critical language was rejected, he nonetheless robustly endorsed the platform because it met his other demands on economic inequality. He described himself at a meeting in New York’s Harlem neighborhood as a “strong defender of Israel” and for the first time spoke warmly about the time he spent in Israel in the 1960s on a kibbutz.

Democrats in recent years have grown increasingly critical of Israel, a result in part of the parlous relationship between Netanyahu and President Barack Obama, and the fraught tone of the debate in 2015 over the Iran nuclear agreement.

But the tense tone of the Al Jazeera interview and Sanders’ refusal to accept anti-Israel pieties commonplace among progressives here and overseas suggests the resistance among Democrats to more radical expressions of Israel criticism.

Democratic lawmakers, for instance, continue to join Republicans in overwhelmingly approving anti-BDS legislation on the state and federal levels.

very year, when May rolls around, it brings back memories of Memorial Day weekend at Grossinger’s, a big singles event that was followed by July 4th, Shabbat Nachamu, and Labor Day weekend. Ahh … to be single, young and carefree at Grossinger’s.

Last weekend Jerry was reminiscing about Grossinger’s and his days working at Camp Morasha. Since his parents were at Grossinger’s often, his mom would say that they were treated like royalty. That, and the fact that Jerry’s dad was extremely generous with any hotel worker he came in contact with. When Jerry had a day off, his dad would make the hour-and-a-half trip to Camp Morasha so that Jerry, and any of Jerry’s friends who also had off, could spend the day at Grossinger’s, where Jerry’s dad treated them to an afternoon barbecue at the pool, dinner, and then the show.

Among Jerry’s friends treated to Grossinger’s one day was a close friend, Efy Nulman and another, whom I shall call Alan for this article. He started as a waiter but was quickly got demoted to “gym bimmy.” In Camp Morasha, the gym bimmy’s only responsibility was to take the chairs off the gym floor when it rained, so the gym could be used for indoor activities. He never had an official day off, as they were had to standby to be called into service whenever it rained. On sunny days they got to do whatever they wanted — so long as they stayed on the campus. Jerry was envious that his close friend was “demoted” to gym bimmy;

Talking about the Big G, this is an original recipe for challah, by Jennie Grossinger. I like to top it with Durkee French fried onions and everything topping. Although it doesn’t specify what type of oil, I use canola oil.

Ingredients: 2-1/4 teaspoons yeast 2 teaspoons sugar 1-1⁄4 cup lukewarm water (110 F) 4-1⁄2 cups sifted flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 2 tablespoons oil 1 egg yolk Directions: 1. Combine yeast, sugar and 1/4 cup warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes or until double in size.

2. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in the center and drop the eggs, oil, remaining water and yeast mixture into the hole.

3. Work into flour a little at a time (you may not need the whole amount or you may need more). Knead dough until smooth and elastic.

Place in an oiled bowl, covered, and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.

4. Divide the dough into 3 pieces and roll into 3 ropes. Braid ropes and place into oiled pan. Cover and let rise again until doubled.

5. Brush with egg yolks (sprinkle poppy seeds). Bake in 375 F oven ( preheated) for 40 minutes or until nicely browned.

Rabbi Hershel Billet of the Young Israel of Woodmere published this defense of Sebastian Gorka in the Algemeiner on Friday, under the headline, “End the Gorka Calumny.� his past week has been both solemn and happy in Israel. Israel mourned and remembered more than 23,500 of her best men and women who died defending their country, as well as the many innocent victims murdered in evil acts of terror. On the very day Israel celebrated 69 years as the only true independent democracy in the Middle East, UNESCO slammed it as the aggressive “occupying power� of Jerusalem and referred to that city’s holy sites by Muslim names only.

At the same time, the invitation given to Muslim-American activist Linda Sarsour to speak at a CUNY commencement has continued to evoke condemnation. Sarsour — who was praised by New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand as a “suffragist� because of her role in the Women’s March on Washington earlier this year — recently shared a podium in Chicago with fellow activist and marcher Rasmea Odeh. They each attacked Zionists for their supposed “land grab.� Ironically, they spoke before a group called “Jewish Voice for Peace,� whose mission statement includes seeking “an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem� and “security and self-determination for Israelis and Palestinians.�

Odeh is being deported from the US because she never reported in her immigration application that, as a terrorist in Israel, she murdered two men and was convicted by a military court. She served ten years in jail before being released in a prisoner exchange.

that one cannot be both a feminist and a Zionist. This week, former Anti-Defamation League national director Abe Foxman called Sarsour “a bigot.� And yet, she continues to receive support from Jews and non-Jews who are blind to who she really is. ome of the same people advocating for Sarsour have attacked Dr. Sebastian Gorka, a deputy assistant to President Donald Trump. The most glaring allegations against him are that he is an antisemite with connections to fascist groups in his late father’s native Hungary. Because these are very serious charges, I chose to investigate the matter. What I learned was that the allegations are baseless and entirely unfounded.

Gorka’s interactions with Jews, Jewish communities and Israel have been uniformly positive and thoroughly supportive.

But first of all, who is Gorka? He is a British-born scholar with expertise in radical Islam and counter-terrorism. His father was a political prisoner in Communist Hungary who continued fighting to free his country even after his escape to London. Before that, the Gorka family had assisted Jewish friends during the Holocaust.

Gorka himself returned to Hungary as a young man to help his ancestral homeland anchor itself with the West. Without question his politics skewed to the right. When key segments of the Hungarian Right began expressing anti-Semitism, Gorka fought them in ways that ended his political career in the country.

My investigation into Gorka taught me that he is (at least) the third generation of his family to take personal risks on behalf of freedom and on behalf of Jews.

Gorka’s chief critic has been Jane Eisner, the editor-in-chief of The Forward, which

has published many articles making a case against him. The time and effort the paper put into this work is impressive. I have to believe that if there was anything — even a single anecdote — in Gorka’s past that was remotely anti-Semitic, The Forward would have found it. Yet in all the articles, there was not a single report of anything Gorka ever said, did or wrote that might paint Jews in a negative light. The closest thing to validation of his naysayers was a video of an interview he gave that was deceptively edited to make it look as if he supported something he clearly opposed — as anyone who read a complete transcript of the interview could discern. s far as I can tell, The Forward’s entire case against Gorka seems to be that he is proud of his Hungarian heritage and has worked with the Hungarian Right. While we all know that Hungary — like many counties in the world — has produced anti-Semitic figures, including some active in its political right today, the efforts to tar him with that brush are not based on any evidence at all.

To smear an innocent man is immoral and politically dishonest.

So during this week when we mourned and celebrated with Israel, we continued to face anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism in America. Sarsour has tried to obfuscate her

anti-Zionism with a show of Philo-Semitism (she raised money to repair a desecrated Jewish cemetery in St. Louis). Also, many Jewish women worked with her on the Washington march. But as we know from the UN — the parent body of UNESCO — anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism.

Unfortunately, too many Jews are in the ranks of the anti-Zionist camp. And too many Jews have joined with the allies of Sarsour in libeling Gorka.

As a Jew who has children living in Gush Etzion and members of my family who have served in or are set to enlist in the IDF, I am very proud. I did not vote for Trump in November. But he is our elected president and all Americans are invested in his success.

I support freedom of the press and I think the president should spend less time attacking the media and more time doing the work of all of the people of America who he was elected to serve. I believe he will find a more balanced press when he does. But he must know that there will always be media criticism. All of America, including the president, are the beneficiaries of a free press.

In fairness to the president, Gorka was a great appointment and he should be commended for it. The Gorka calumny should be buried once and for all.

By Ben Sales, JTA Sebastian Gorka, the White House adviser accused of membership in a far-right Hungarian group, this weekend defended his pro-Israel bona fides and denied being anti-Semitic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have spent my life fighting against totalitarian ideologies,â&#x20AC;?

Gorka said in an interview with Jerusalem Post Editor-in-Chief Yaakov Katz at the Jerusalem Post Conference on Sunday in New York. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nobody â&#x20AC;Ś has found one sentence that I have said in the past 46 years that is anti-Semitic or anti-Israel.â&#x20AC;?

Gorka rebuffed attacks against him but did not deny being a member of Historical Vitezi Rend, a far-right Hungarian group. He also did not explicitly deny that he will soon be leaving his position as a counterterrorism adviser to President Donald Trump.

The Forward has published a series of articles attacking Gorka. It quoted leaders of the Historical Vitezi Rend, a namesake of a defunct order that existed under Hungaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nazi-allied government, saying Gorka had sworn allegiance to the movement. The original group ceased to exist in the 1940s following Nazi Germanyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defeat. Gorka has worn the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s medal to public events, saying he does so to honor his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anti-Nazi and anti-communist activity.

SKA Yom HaShoah: When the sirens went off in Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls, everyone stood in silence for those who had lost their lives in the Holocaust. HALB Yom HaZikaron: Soldiers who lost their lives in battle and civilians killed in acts of terror were remembered and honored. Middle School students wrote reports on specific individuals whose lives were lost. Yizkor candles were lit while the choir sang songs reflecting the meaning of the day. Lower School students learned the tfilla for chayalim and watched a powerful video on the importance and integrity of joining Tzahal. The next morning there were balloons, streamers and lively music for Yom Haatzamut.

Shulamith celebrates with seniors: Eighth graders went to the Five Towns JCC for a pre-Yom HaAtzmaut celebration with local seniors. The blue-and-white clad girls bantered and danced with the seniors, and joined in a spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday” for a woman celebrating her 100th.

Shoah rembrances at YCQ: Students at the Yeshiva of Central Queens visited the Holocaust Resource Center in Manhasset to meet with Survivor Irving Roth (above). The school also participated in Names Not Numbers (at right). (See page 15.)

HAFTR Yom HaShoah: The challenge of teaching the Shoah in the Lower School is met by using allegorical stories that students can relate to. Rabbi Kupchik opened HAFTR’s program with a message of “V’higadditah L’bincha,” reminding students of the importance of passing on the legacy of Holocaust survivors and of those who perished. Principal Joy Hammer highlighted the importance of standing up to bullying of any form. YHQ Yom HaZikaron: Yeshiva Har Torah students mark Yom Hazikaron with Lt. Col. Shai Bar, husband of YHT Ivrit teacher Morah Bar. He told students how the IDF defends the State of Israel and Jews all over the world while following an exemplary moral code. The IDF helps integrate the diverse groups that make up Israeli society, works with socially and developmentally challenged youth, supports the disadvantaged and responds with humanitarian aid to international crises around the globe, he said. Following the presentation, a memorial candle was lit in memory of all those chayalim who fell defending Medinat Yisrael since it’s founding, and a Keil Malai was recited in their memory.

HAFTR HS Yom HaZikaron: The day was observed with the utmost kavod, with a Tekes in memory of the 73 soldiers killed in a helicopter accident 20 years ago — the largest loss of life in one day in Israeli army history. The soldiers were on a mission heading into Lebanon when the tragic crash occurred.

Shulamith Yom HaShoah: After the candles were lit, Elly Berkovits Gross shared memories of her childhood in Romania and relayed her experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust.

YCQ Yom HaAtzmaut: Students and faculty at Yeshiva of Central Queens dressed in blue and white, kindergarteners sang songs related to Israel, first graders wore crowns with Israeli flags as they joined second and third graders at the 4th grade Israeli Fair.

By Nicole Jacobs, Grade 12 During the last week of March, 19 HAFTR seniors had the opportunity to participate in a life-changing mission to Poland, and I was fortunate enough to be one of those students.

On this trip, we learned about Jewish life before WWII, walked through concentration camps and villages that were destroyed by the Nazis, and visited kevarim of kedoshim.

Each of us learned what it means to be Jewish and internalized those experiences in our own ways. This opportunity allowed me to finally be able to see what four of my great-grandparents and their families went through. Walking through the camps with the Israeli flag waving on my back was an indescribable feeling. I was able to prove that no matter how hard others may try to destroy the Jewish people, we never perish, and will always remain strong.

After traveling to Poland, it has now become the mission of the participants to pass on the things we saw to other students and faculty members. On Yom April 24, HAFTR High School’s Yom HaShoah program started with an opening speech from Rabbi Gedaliah Oppen, principal of Judaic Studies, who led the mission, followed by students’ testimonies and candle lightings, to symbolize the mourning of the six million Jews who were brutally murdered in the Holocaust.

Michal Engel, one of the students who participated in the Poland trip, captured the mission perfectly through her video which not only to re-inspired the mission participants, but also sparked something within everyone who watched it.

In addition to the students’ presentation, we had the privilege and honor of hearing Irene Hizme speak and share her story.

Hizme, a HAFTR grandparent and Hebrew Institute of Long Island alumna, is a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Both she and her twin brother were experimented on by Dr. Josef Mengele.

Hizme and her brother, Rene, were used as human guinea pigs as Mengele performed organ transplants and blood transfusions on his “patients.” Of 3,000 twins who were victims of Mengele’s experiments, only 160 survived.

She went into detail about what her life and experiences were like before, during,

and after the war, sharing a handful of personal stories from her time as a child. Hizme was only six when she and her brother were torn from their mother’s arms, which was the last time she ever saw her parents.

Her message was to never to forget the atrocities of the Holocaust, to never be silent in the face of evil, and to carry on proudly as Jews. We owe it to Hizme, our ancestors, and the six million who perished to take time out of our lives to remember them and to never forget.

On Yom HaShoah, DRS had the privilege to hear from Shimon Felder, a survivor of Bergen-Belsen and grandfather of DRS Junior Jesse Felder. Felder delivered a powerful message of Emunah in Hashem, and how he managed to stay strong throughout the horrors he experienced in his lifetime.

After the speech, junior Sruli Fruchter presented “In Living Memory,” a journal in tribute to victims of the Holocaust, including articles recording the accounts of the relatives of DRS students.

Below is an article by Sruli Fruchter, describing why he decided to put the publication together: We say “Never forget.” Never forget the families that were destroyed. Never forget the six million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis. Never forget the Shoah. Seventytwo years after the Shoah ended, we must continue to do just that.

In honor of Yom HaShoah, observed April 24, I decided to launch the first-ever DRS Holocaust Journal, In Living Memory.

As founder and editor-in-chief, I wanted to offer students the chance to honor those they knew who suffered this tragic, inhumane time. Some victims of the Holocaust See Shoah on page 16

SKA welcomes 9th graders Anticipating starting a new school can be intimidating, but not for the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls’ Class of 2021, who participated in SKA’s Yom Chaverut on Sunday, May 7.

The incoming ninth graders were welcomed by Head of School Helen Spirn and Assistant Principal Elana Flaumenhaft, together with Associate Principal Deena Kobre; the director of student programs, Rab-

bi Yosef Zakutinsky; SKA social worker Lisa Fogel; grade level advisers Sheila Leibtag, Danielle Sudwerts and Estie Engel, and several SKA student ambassadors.

Girls from various elementary schools bonded over team-building activities and enjoyed a delicious lunch and ice cream cones from a special truck. Davening mincha together capped off the program in an inspirational way.

HAFTR 4th graders celebrate the arts at a year-end event

By Moishe Rechester, Grade 8 Eighth grade students from Yeshiva of Central Queens visit the Holocaust Resource Center of Temple Judea, in Manhasset, to meet with Survivor, Irving Roth, author of Bondi’s Brother, a memoir about his experiences in the Holocaust, which the students had read in class.

Roth was born in 1929 in Kosice, Czechoslovakia. Growing up in the town of Humenne, his first love was playing soccer. When the Nazis came to his town, he was no longer allowed to attend his school, play in the playground or participate in soccer matches; because he was Jewish, he had to wear a yellow star on his clothing.

He is a survivor of the liquidation of the Jewish community in the town of Humenne, Eastern Slovakia; Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps and the death marches that preceded the end of the War. On April 11, 1945, the U.S. Army showed up at the camp and Roth was liberated. After the war, in 1947, he immigrated to the United States. He fought in the Korean War and docu-

An arts education builds skills including the four Cs: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication and Collaboration. Throughout the grades at HAFTR, students are exposed to a well-rounded arts curriculum including classroom instruction in art and music, museum visits and special programs. Evening of the Arts is a culmination of the fourth grade accomplishments in the arts.

Fourth grade artists and performers dazzled parents, grandparents and guests with a gala art exhibit and jazz repertoire. White-gloved students circulated with hot hors d’oeuvres as the guests enjoyed the art on display. During both art class and M.I. Time, students emulated the works of Alberto Giacometti, Edgar Degas, Keith Haring, Vassily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, Kessler Woodward, Sonya Delaunay, Romero Britto, Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely and Vincent van Gogh. There was also a multi-media exhibit from the students’ trip to the Lower East Side and the Eldridge Street Synagogue.

The walls were lined with amazing Giacometti sculptures, each depicting the unique interests of our students. Guests were drawn to the sound and light show that accompanied the “Starry Night over Jerusalem” mural made of thousands of bottle caps that were collected by students over the past few years.

As the lights dimmed, guests were ushered to their seats to be “jazzed up” by the gradewide musical performance. As the procession of students filed on stage, Kayla Fauziev accompanied them with a piano rendition of Last Chance Blues, by Martha Mier. Students narrated, sang, danced and played their recorders as guests swung to the music.

The musical program included a combination of both classical jazz songs as well as some Hebrew songs. Some of the musical artists included in the performance were the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington and Irving Mills.

One of the highlights was the song Schar Mitzvah by Elie Schwalb, accompanied by a video showing how HAFTR students know “that the reward for a mitzvah is a mitzvah, and there is no limit to that reward!”

The evening ended with a reprise from Magic To Do, by Stephen Schwartz. Applause rang out in the auditorium and the students’ faces were beaming as they took a bow.

Naomi Maron gave hakarat hatov to Jill Goldstein, and Janet Goldman for inspiring HAFTR students with an awareness and love for the arts. Thanks were also extended to Tova Zucker for her guidance and countless hours spent preparing for the Evening of the Arts.

Roth is the director of the Holocaust Resource Center and an adjunct professor at the University of Maine. He received the Spirit of Anne Frank Outstanding Citizen Award from the Anne Frank Center USA for promoting human rights, social justice and for conceiving, developing and initiating the Adopt a Survivor program in the U.S. He is also an author on the Holocaust and a recognized speaker on the subject in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

The students watched a “Prelude to the Holocaust” presentation and then a video of a trip taken with a group of college students on a Holocaust remembrance tour to Poland.

Following Roth’s lecture, the students had a chance to look around at all the art work from the Holocaust and read through saved articles.

He signed the students’ copies of his book.

This experience and others like it are so vital to keep the teachings of the atrocities that took place during the Holocaust alive so that we never forget.

Continued from page 15 had to watch as their families were torn before their eyes, their loved-ones taken, never to be seen again. Others were fortunate enough to escape before the war began. The horrors and tragedies endured by each and every European Jew, at the time of the Shoah, are intangible to us in today’s day and age; honoring and sharing the stories of these great people was something I thought could be achieved through a Holocaust Journal.

As the grandson of two Holocaust survivors, I often think about the responsibility we face as their future generation. To ensure their memory remains eternal is incumbent upon us all.

The DRS Holocaust Journal utilizes art, memoirs, and personal dedications to commemorate the lives and stories of true inspirations. Some students wrote memoirs about their relatives or people they knew in the Holocaust, while others wrote poems or produced original artwork. With the help of our generous sponsors, we have been fortunate to distribute one journal to every single student, faculty member, and administrator in DRS, on Yom HaShoah.

On the cover of the Holocaust Journal, I drew a single Jew standing in front of Aus-

exander Swaab, and Mark Kassai. The documentary was edited by the Wagner College Holocaust Education Center and Cameron Haffner, HEC intern and film minor, under the direction of Professor Lori Weintrob.

A second documentary was produced by Sarah Altman, Ariella Shloush and Tehilla Robinson on the life of survivors Mr. and Mrs. Garay.

The eighth graders sang “Last Night” and “Ani Ma’amin”. A solo of Shema was performed by Binyamin Platofsky.

The program culminated with video by Yaacov Shwekey, “We Are a Miracle” and with lighting of candles by the Garays and Lucy Lipiner, accompanied by eighth grader Levi Langer, in memory of their families who were murdered at the hands of the Nazis. chwitz, cloaked in Israel’s flag. As he looks out at the gates of hell, where more than a million Jews were murdered, he remembers; he remembers the mothers, the fathers, the brothers, the sisters, and the victims whose lives were cut short because of a deeply-rooted hatred for the Jewish people. He is wrapped in Israel’s flag to represent the security that Jews have today, because of their homeland. In essence, this image tells the victims that their anguish and tribulations were not endured in vain, as the Holocaust would have never happened if we had a Jewish homeland. It is now assured that it will never happen again.

For the past two months, I, along with the faculty adviser, Rabbi Eli Brazil; literary adviser, Robin Schick; and my fellow editors, Jacob Appel (’18), Uri Ash (’18), Benyamin Bortz (’18), Dovi Schlossberg (’17), and Akiva Thalheim (’17), worked to ensure that In Living Memory fit our vision and accomplish its goal of honoring each and every victim of the Shoah in the journal.

After considering various titles for the journal, we chose In Living Memory as it goes hand-in-hand with our theme: whether they have passed or survived, the victims of the Shoah will remain immortal through their memory. The Nazis tried to exterminate the Jewish people, but we will never allow their mission to become a reality.

We will keep each and every victim of the Shoah alive, In Living Memory.

For Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem in Tehillim AlAn JAy Gerber Kosher BooKworm

Y

om Yerushalayim will be celebrated next Wednesday, May 24, the 28 Day of Iyar, the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem.

The role played by Jerusalem in the Jewish religion is pivotal; it’s at the center of historical experience and religious ritual, liturgy and geography.

The book of Psalms, Tehillim, is at the center of religious prayer and meditation.

Within its 150 chapters can be found various prayers and meditations centering on Jerusalem. This week’s essay follows up on last week’s citation of Tehillim 122 by Michal Horowitz and further cites commentary from this and other relevant passages in Tehillim and various liturgical works that are textually and thematically related to Jerusalem.

In his commentary to Psalm 122, Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb (The Koren Tehillim) teaches us the following: “Jerusalem is comprised of many diverse

components. It is the seat of justice, and it is the seat of royalty: There the thrones of judgment are set, the thrones of the house of David.”

He continues: “Frequently, Jerusalem found itself besieged by enemies.

The major empires of history have laid claim to the city, and war was never a stranger to its citizens. More than once, those citizens were exiled from Jerusalem for years, for decades, and for centuries.

“Our psalmist knows well the power of a rebuilt Jerusalem. It can do what no other force has ever accomplished. It can heal the discord which has historically plagued Jerusalem. ‘Jerusalem, built up, is like a city compacted together,’ which our sages take to mean that it can transform all of Israel’s factions into compan-

ions of each other.”

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May those who love you live harmoniously; may there be peace within your ramparts, harmony in your palaces’.”

According to Rabbi Weinreb, “each verse contain two words which are essentially synonymous, ‘shalom and shalva’. We have translated them ‘peace and harmony,’ basing our translation upon Malbim’s suggestion that shalom refers to peace between the city and its external enemies, whereas shalva connotes peace within the city, harmony among its inhabitants.

“Following Malbim’s suggestion, we can paraphrase these verses to convey a vital les-

son: If there is a wish to ‘pray for the peace of Jerusalem,’ then ‘those who love you,’ those who love the city, must ‘live harmoniously.’

“What a pertinent lesson for our time!

The goal of peace with Israel’s foes can be realized only to the extent that harmony exists in Israel’s midst. ‘Shalva’ is a prerequisite for ‘shalom’.” abbi Jonathan Sacks, in his commentary to The Koren Siddur, points us to the thrice daily recitation of blessing 14 in the Amida prayer, “Rebuilding Jerusalem” and cites the following commentary: “Jerusalem is the home of the Jewish soul, the place to which we turn in prayer and for whose restoration Jews prayed in every generation. The book of Psalms has left us an indelible description of how Jews felt when the city fell to the Babylonians in the 6th century BCE: ‘By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. …

May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.’ (Psalm 137). Jerusalem is mentioned more than 600 times in the Hebrew Bible.”

And finally, for this week I will cite this brief, but very perceptive, observation on See Jerusalem on page 21

Torah on marred kohanim: discriminate, protect rAbbi Avi billet Parsha of the weeK

O

ne of the questions which gets much emphasis nowadays is whether the Torah discriminates against kohanim who have some kind of deformity, blemish, or disability. This is an outcome of looking at the Torah through the lens of 21st century morals; anything in the Torah that doesn’t strike us as being up with the times is fair game for attack.

Honestly, that’s the game many people play today, using emotional (and almost never intellectual) arguments to explain why certain laws and policies are discriminatory. Let us be clear — there is never a good counter argument against an emotional argument. However, when emotions are removed from an argument, and facts, figures, and information can

be debated, then we can have a fair winner, and a decision/policy/law that can be agreed upon by consensus.

So if we are looking at the Torah purely from an emotional vantage point, the answer would likely be, “Yes. The Torah is discriminating.” But to accept the premise of this argument, we need to understand the difference between discrimination and protection.

While I am certainly able to try out to be in the NFL, the fact that my age, inadequate frame, disproportionate body fat, and lack of muscle tone would prevent anyone from offering me a contract. This less discrimination as it is for my protection. Do I cry and scream “Discrimination in the NFL?” Or do I say, “I’m better suited for a different line of work.” here is a physical prowess needed for kohen work. And there is also a need for a certain kind of perfection in service, the lack of which could be deadly (think of Nadav and Avihu). Would it be proper to put people who, through no fault of their own are inca-

pable of serving properly, into positions where they have to perform at a certain level, and where, if they fail they may die?

That is protection — but is it also discrimination? On an emotional level, perhaps, but not on an intellectual level. Additionally, these kohanim are not denied any of the benefits of the priesthood; they can eat all of the special foods kohanim eat, they can receive the special gifts the kohanim are gifted, and the rules of purity/impurity still apply to them, they can be given the kohen aliyah, can bless the people, and can serve for the Pidyon HaBen ritual.

What is denied to them is permission to serve in the ritual service of the Temple.

According to Or HaChaim, when Moshe told G-d at the burning bush to send someone else (Shmot 4:13), he was saying, “In the hands of someone who is worthy to carry out Your mission, not in a weak person such as myself, who has a permanent mum (blemish), and this is a demonstration of my being unfit for such a lofty mission.” It takes a sense of self

and awareness of how others perceive you to be able to take a step back and say, “This is not the job for me.” Obviously G-d wanted Moshe for many other reasons! n his commentary on both Vayikra 1:3 and 21:17 (look them both up!), Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch elaborates in great detail how the kohen who would serve in the Temple needed to be of the same caliber as the animals which were to be brought as offerings — without blemish. (See Malachi 1:8 who decries bringing animals that have blemishes.)

The prophet Hoshea rebuked the priests in the Northern Kingdom of Israel who used their sanctuaries as a haven for the blind, lame and sick to seek consolation for their suffering.

G-d’s altar demands the whole person — and the offerings are to be without blemish.

And such, the kohanim who represent the people are to be without blemish. The wholeness of the animal is representative of our giving our whole selves to G-d, as we declare in the See Torah on page 21

I

How to become a kingdom of priests rAbbi dAvid etenGoff

T

he beginning of our parasha, Emor, focuses on a variety of laws that pertain solely to the kohanim. From a purely juridical perspective, they have little to do with the majority of the Jewish people, since the kahunah (priesthood) is a biologically endowed status.

Yet, from a broader perspective, all members of the Jewish people have the inherent ability to be “kohanim.”

How can we actualize this innate spiritual potential to be kohanim? I believe two pasukim in Sefer Shemot provide us with a basis to answer this question: “And now, if you obey Me and keep My covenant, you shall be to Me a treasure out of all peoples, for Mine is the

entire earth. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests (mamlechect kohanim) and a holy nation.” (19:5-6). Rashi rejects the literal translation of mamlechect kohanim as a “kingdom of priests.” Instead, he opines that the correct explication of “mamlechect kohanim” is “a kingdom of princes” since, as we have noted, we cannot all be kohanim. The Seforno, however, takes an entirely different approach: “Precisely by being kohanim you will be chosen (segulah). You will be a kingdom of priests in the sense that you will explain and teach [the existence and knowledge of G-d] to all manner of men. In that way, everyone will call upon Hashem and worship Him, shoulder to shoulder. As it says in Sefer Yeshiyahu [61:6]: ‘And you will be called the Priests of Hashem’.”

Ideally, according to the Seforno, as the children of Avraham, Yitzhak, Ya’akov, Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah, it is incumbent upon us to bring spiritual illumination to mankind and be an ohr l’goyim (“light unto nations”) (Sefer Ye-

shayahu 42:6 and 49:6) As the moral compass of the world, it is our responsibility to live lives that reflect the highest standards of ethical behavior, and thereby help “l’takane ha’olam b’malchut Shakai” (“to perfect the universe through the proclamation of G-d’s sovereignty”). Moreover, as the spiritual educators to the world’s nations, our role is to enlighten humanity regarding the existence and Divine providence of our Creator, and thereby pave the way for all people to recognize His greatness and glory. This, after all, is one of the underlying rationales for our having been chosen as G-d’s holy and exalted nation, and, for the Seforno, the manner whereby we can all be kohanim. abbeinu Shimson Raphael Hirsch adopted a complementary approach to that of the Seforno. He explains Sefer Shemot 19:6 in terms of our people’s mission to be kohanim and the resulting positive impact we can have on our fellow man: “Each and every one of you will be a ‘ko-

han’ in the sense that you will accept upon yourself My hegemony in every action that they will do. In doing so, they will take upon themselves the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven in its overall and holistic sense. One will then be able to spread the knowledge of, and loyalty to, Hashem through the words of one’s mouth and the performance of one’s actions.”

The above presentations serve as a powerful description of our role as G-d’s servants.

Beyond a doubt, however, it was the Rambam who gave this concept its most powerful voice.

Upset over Sarsour at ‘Settlement’ Rabbi Zvi Romm of the Lower East Side’s Bialystoker Synagogue this week distributed the following open letter to David Garza, executive director of the Henry Street Settlement, another LES institution.

Dear Mr. Garza, I hope you are well. I’m writing you with regard to the upcoming “Lilian Wald Symposium” on “Immigrant New York: The New Majority,” to be held at the Abrons Art Center on May 16th. The Henry Street Settlement is proudly promoting Linda Sarsour as a panelist at the symposium.

We, the members of the Bialystoker Synagogue, are happy to be next-door neighbors of the Henry Street Settlement. But we are profoundly disturbed by the fact that our neighbors have given Ms. Sarsour this platform.

Ms. Sarsour has been an outspoken supporter of the BDS movement, seeking to damage the State of Israel economically. She has declared that one cannot be a Zionist and a feminist … ignoring the many, many abuses of women’s rights which are rampant in the Arab world surrounding Israel. She has tweeted that a young Palestinian boy going to throw stones at Israeli soldiers is the “definition of courage.”

She has stated that there is “nothing creepier than Zionism.”

We, who love and support the State of Israel, are appalled by these positions and statements. By giving Linda Sarsour such a prominent platform, we feel that the Henry Street Settlement is indirectly expressing its tolerance of these anti-Israel positions.

We feel that it is incredibly important that the Henry Street Settlement clearly and unambiguously state that it does not endorse Ms. Sarsour’s positions on Israel and Zionism. As Israel marks its 69th anniversary, we would greatly appreciate a statement from Henry Street Settlement celebrating the State of Israel, the only full democracy in the Middle East.

Dena Weiss, in her essay “Awake, Awake, O Zion!” (Mechon Hadar) concludes her teaching with the following somber reflection on a contemporary reality: “Before we had the State of Israel, we were dreaming of independence, we were dreaming of a return to the land. Before 1948, we were prisoners of hope [hatikva]. But we are awake now. There is real earth to be tilled, real taxes to be paid, real Jewish people who live under Jewish sovereignty, and real nonJewish people who live under Jewish sovereignty. These are our sewers and our roads.

We are dreamers. It is a grave task, maybe an impossible task, but it is our responsibility.”

This may be a bit sharp. However, if you have ever visited Jerusalem you will surely recognize this reality.

My dear readers, we continue to live daily in historic times. We wake up to fear, but we live in hope. We walk the streets looking around us, yet we look ahead with hatikva, for both ourselves and our people’s future, because we know there is G-d in whom all real faith resides.

Anti-Semitic Norway acts to ban circumcision Jeff Dunetz politics to go

n Shabbos, the Progressive Party in Norway, the smaller of two parties within the ruling government coalition (with 29 of 169 parliament seats), announced that it intends to initiate a law banning circumcision in the country for males under the age of 16.

The Jerusalem Post reported that supporters of the bill “claim that circumcision constitutes mental and physical harm to children and constitutes a serious violation of children’s rights.”

Historically, movements to ban circumcision are centered in attempts to move the Jewish commitment from G-d and refocus it on man. In fact, almost every campaign to destroy the Jewish people started with a ban on circumcision, followed by a ban on kosher slaughter and finally a ban on teaching Torah (Norway reversed the order: they began with Kosher slaughter).

The second paragraph of the original 1814 constitution of Norway read: “The evangelical-Lutheran religion remains the State’s public religion. Those inhabitants who profess to it, are obliged to raise their children in the same. Jesuits and monastic orders may not be tolerated. Jews remain excluded from admission to the kingdom.” That paragraph was repealed in 1851, but that didn’t mean the country’s attitude changed.

Shechita has been banned in Norway since 1930. Technically the ban is against any method of slaughter that does not involve

stunning the animal first.

When Holland outlawed the kosher slaughter of large bulls in 2002, Rabbi Michael Melchior, former chief rabbi of Norway, responded, “They simply don’t want foreigners, and they don’t want Jews. I won’t say this is the only motivation, but it’s certainly no coincidence that one of the first things Nazi Germany forbade was kosher slaughter.”

“I also know,” Rabbi Melchior said, “that during the original debate on this issue in Norway, where shechitah has been banned since 1930, one of the parliamentarians said straight out, ‘If they don’t like it, let them go live somewhere else’.” orwegian media often spreads antiSemitic canards. The newspaper later apologized for calling Kushner “the Jew.” Johan Galtung, the Norwegian sociologist nicknamed the “father of peace stud-

ies,” who made anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli remarks while lecturing at the University of Oslo, claimed that a connection may exist between the terrorist responsible for the massacre of children in Norway and the Mossad.

He’s also claimed that “the Jews control U.S. media and divert it for the sake of Israel.”

A popular form of modern anti-Semitism is portraying the Israeli government or IDF as bloodthirsty or as Nazis. For example, Dagbladet, a newspaper of the Norwegian Left, published a cartoon in which Palestinian terrorists leave an Israeli prison with the German motto of the Buchenwald concentration camp: “Jedem Das Seine” (to each what he deserves).

In September 2016, the Norwegian National Theater opened its Festival in Oslo with a dramatic video clip that urged a boycott of Habima, the National Theater of Israel, labelling Israel a state “based on ethnic cleansing, racism, occupation and apartheid.”

Last November, Utbildningsradion, the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company, aired “The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States,” which suggested that the “IsSee Norway on page 23

Can Trump survive Abbas?

T

here was something of a motivational speaker about President Donald Trump as he welcomed Mahmoud Abbas, the gerontocrat at the helm of the Palestinian Authority for the last 12 years, to the White House on May 3.

At their joint appearance, Trump was confident and beaming.

Abbas, in turn, came across as eager and respectful. As Trump surely knows, to sell something you need to believe in it—and to look like you believe in it. In tone and body language, both leaders pulled that off in their comments on prospects for a final Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, even if they came across as overly self-conscious in doing so.

On the face of it, there is no doubting Trump’s personal investment in securing what he sees as the ultimate deal.

“Over the course of my lifetime, I’ve always heard that perhaps the toughest deal to make is the deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians—let’s see if we can prove them wrong,” Trump declared.

Whether his administration has the mettle and the patience to pull off a lasting agreement that will suffer many false starts along the way, during a process facing the implacable opposition of people far more devious than the congressional Republicans who derailed the repeal of Obamacare, remains very much an open question.

For his part, as he stood alongside Trump, Abbas gave the impression of playing ball more than he ever did than when President Barack Obama was in charge. During Obama’s second term, Abbas refused direct talks with Israel following the collapse of the 2013–14 negotiations, pursuing a policy of sulky unilateralism that aimed to secure international recognition of a Palestinian state.

“We believe that we are capable and able to bring about success to our efforts because, Mr. President, you have the determination and you have the desire to see it come to fruition and become successful,” Abbas gushed. Perhaps he can afford to do so. In Mideast policy circles right now, there is much talk of the positive response Jason Greenblatt, Trump’s international negotiations representative, has encountered among Palestinians. This, in turn, has made the Trump administration more amenable to entreaties from Arab leaders to bring Abbas into the heart of the negotiating process. or now, this is paying off for Abbas, whose principal goal is to remain in power—which is, incidentally, the same principal goal of every autocrat on the planet, from Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro to Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe. And he is showing he means it. After taking full control of his Fatah faction last November, Abbas in recent weeks has moved against his Hamas rivals in Gaza, cutting salaries to Gazan PA employees and informing Israel the PA would no longer pay for the electricity the Jewish state supplies to Gaza (Hamas won’t sign a separate supply deal since it doesn’t recognize Israel.) Protests against Abbas’s government among West Bank Palestinians were met with a forthright response from stick-wielding Palestinian security officers.

This is the sort of resolve Abbas doubtless feels will impress Trump. For the same reason, Trump would do well to realize that what Abbas can actually deliver is rather limited in terms of both substance and endurance.

However desperately the president wants the elixir of an Israeli-Palestinian agreement, he must also be aware of the profound sadness, anger and disbelief that pictures of the 1993 Oslo Accords, signed on the White House lawn, now evoke. A president as brand-aware as Trump surely wants to minimize the risk of the same outcome 20 years from now.

Hence, if any forthcoming peace process is to survive all the way to a written agreement, with Trump in the role, as he put it, of “mediator, facilitator, arbitrator,” American officials need See Trump on page 23

A

n open road on a beautiful day, with your kids in the back seat, maybe even a picnic lunch; what could be more perfect?

I will always wonder what Tali Hatuel, eight months pregnant, with her four daughters Hila, Roni, Hadar and Meirav, aged 11 to 2 in the back seat, was thinking in those last moments.

And went through her mind, their minds, as the sounds of gunfire filled the air and bullets tore through the car?

Nearly 15 years ago, on a road near Gush Katif, south of Ashkelon and Ashdod along Israel’s coastline, the family drive gave way to the horrible silence that followed the terrorists’ gunfire which took the lives of Tali Hatuel and her four children and unborn baby.

How do you fill that silence?

A few days later, Boaz Shabo, who lost his wife and three of his children in a terrorist attack in Itamar two years earlier, came to comfort David Hatuel. He struggled to find the words, but of course, there are no words.

During their meeting, David Hatuel asked Boaz Shabo the unanswerable question: “Boaz, how am I supposed to get up in the morning?”

And Boaz responded: “You get up in the morning, and you get up — to no one. But … Tali [your wife] is looking at you from above, spurring you on to continue.” his week’s Torah portion, Emor, has much to say on the both the challenge and the nature of this question.

Emor opens with an exhortation to the kohanim not to come into contact with a dead body. Then, after around 50 verses specifically addressed to the kohanim, the parsha switches to a review of the Jewish festivals: Pesach, the counting of the Omer, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkoth, and Shemini Atzeret.

Abbas is 82 years old. To give him his due, he’s entitled to tell all those who have speculated about his health during the last decade that, as Mark Twain said first, “reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” But will Abbas be with us three years from now, or even one year? Any sensible policy plan will need to account for scenarios without Abbas.

In describing the mitzvah of counting the days and weeks from the offering of the Omer sacrifice to Shavuot, the Torah tells us: “And you shall count for yourselves, from the day after Shabbat, from the day you bring the waved Omer offering, seven complete weeks.” (Leviticus 23:15) It is interesting to note that the day we bring (and wave before the altar) the Omer sacrifice is called here Macharat HaShabbat (the day after Shabbat). Our oral tradition teaches, however, that Shabbat here refers not to the seventh day of the week, but rather to the first day of Pesach, also called Shabbat.

This is an important point, which was the source of great controversy in Jewish history. Over 2,000 years ago, the Sadducees, a sect of Jews who believed only in the literal translation of the Bible, understood this verse to mean that the counting of the Omer always began on the first Sunday after Passover, a point bitterly contested by the rabbis of the time. So if this wording became the source of such controversy, one wonders why the Torah chose to use such ambiguous terminology.

Obviously there must be some connection between this mitzvah of the Omer and the theme of Shabbat. So what does Shabbat have to do with the Omer, and for that matter with Pesach? Further, a closer look at the portion begins to uncover other allusions to Shabbat: In discussing the mitzvah of blowing the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah, the Torah tells us: “In the seventh month, on the first of the month, you shall have a rest day, a remembrance of Shofar, a holy calling.”

The Talmud in tractate Rosh Hashanah (fourth chapter) explains that this “remembrance” of the shofar refers to the fact that when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, the shofar is not blown, and only remembered. Why, in the midst of teaching us both the mitzvah of Rosh Hashanah as well as the central mitzvah of the

day (blowing the shofar), does the Torah feel a need to allude to the mitzvah of Shabbat? hen the Jewish people left Egypt, the greatest gift Hashem gave them was the gift of time. In fact, the very first mitzvah given to the Jewish people, while they were still in Egypt, was the counting of the months, and the fact that “this month (Nissan, when the Jews left Egypt) will be for you the first of the months” (Exodus 12:2). A slave, you see, has no time, because his time is not his own, it is his master’s. A slave gives no thought to building a future, because the slave has no future.

And then one day, the Jewish people were suddenly free, with no one else deciding for them what they had to do every hour and every minute of the day.

On the one hand, this must have been an intoxicating experience. At the same time, it must have been somewhat frightening.

A slave has no budget to balance, no bills to pay, no worries about whether the crop will come in; it’s all in the hands of the master.

This was the challenge facing the Jewish people as they journeyed towards the land of Israel, knowing the miracles of the desert would soon be behind them, and a land needed to be conquered, its fields plowed and planted.

The Jews became a nation only when they left Egypt, because now they had a mission and a purpose: to be a “Mamlechet Kohanim Ve’Goy Kadosh” (a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Exodus 19:6).

Perhaps that is why this week’s parsha begins with the kohanim, the priests: Because the concept of the priesthood is a model for the Jewish people. The kohanim are our educators, who lead by example, and their lives are wrapped up in the service of a higher purpose, the challenge of bringing G-d into the world and into our lives.

Shabbat teaches us to step off the ride and take stock of where we are headed and why we are doing all that we spend so much time doing.

And Shabbat also teaches us to learn to live in every moment, and appreciate each moment’s beauty and power. his is why Pesach here is called “Shabbat,” and the counting of the Omer is begun on the day after “Shabbat,” because the Omer is all about appreciating each day of each week as we move from the Exodus towards Shavuot and the giving of the Torah. On the one hand, we count each day, to appreciate its gifts amidst all the little and sometimes very large challenges that may come our way, while never losing sight of the goal, represented by Shavuot, when we receive the Torah and with it our mission and purpose as a people.

And this is at the heart of all of the festivals, which are also all about appreciating each moment of each season, and each stage in our journey as a people, while never losing sight of the fact that each season and step in the journey is also part of a larger reality.

And this is also at the root of the beginning of the portion: the defilement by contact with death. Death is the ultimate reminder that we are all here today and gone tomorrow. Thus the kohen, whose mission is to remind the Jewish people that there always has to be a higher purpose, avoids contact with death wherever possible.

Over 70 years ago, we as a people made a decision to build a future and not get stuck in the moment.

If there was ever a people with the right to escape the challenges of the future, or get stuck in the moment, it was the Jewish people of 1945. Yet, driven by the passion of a 3,000 year journey, we accepted a partnership with G-d in building a homeland, against seemingly insurmountable and often undeniably cruel and unfair odds.

We still have a long way to go, as a nation and as a people. It is hard for us to imagine how David Hatuel managed to get beyond his present and move forward into an uncertain future.

But he did eventually remarry, and build a new family. And somehow, perhaps the knowledge that we as a people continue to embrace the future amidst all the struggles of the present, will give strength and hope to us all.

The Norwegian EL and IT union, which represents over 30,000 energy and telecommunications workers, then adopted a boycott of the Histadrut, Israel’s labor union.

Make no mistake about it, this proposal to ban circumcision has the same purpose as the paragraph in the 1814 constitution described above — to keep the Jews out (meanwhile, Jews are a very tiny minority in Norway; the WJC estimates that there are only about 1,200 Jews in the country).

This proposed bill hits one of the most basic provisions of Jewish practice. Circumcision is not a rabbinical interpretation — it is a direct order! Just read Bereishit Chapter 17, verses 9-11. It’s right there in ink and parchment: “And G-d said to Abraham, ‘And you shall keep My covenant, you and your seed after you throughout their generations.

This is My covenant, which you shall observe between Me and between you and between your seed after you, that every male among you be circumcised. And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be as the sign of a covenant between Me and between you’.”

This new effort by Norway sends a clear message to its Jews, “Get The Hell Out!”

Most obviously, there is Marwan Barghouti, the Fatah terrorist currently jailed for life in Israel on five counts of murder. As of this writing, Barghouti is entering the third week of a hunger strike, and 1,600 other Palestinian prisoners are following his example.

prisoner who expired in a British jail in 1981 after 66 days without food—and whose death unleashed a torrent of international sympathy for the IRA cause. But his more immediate calculations will have factored in the enormous popularity he enjoys among Palestinians. As the leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs terrorist group, Barghouti is in a much better position to build an internal consensus with Hamas, and other Islamist and leftist factions, than Abbas is.

Barghouti, then, casts a huge shadow over the succession question. So, collectively, does Hamas, which this week launched a charm offensive based on a new political document that, predictably, has been seized by several commentators as evidence of newfound “moderation.”

Moderation, in this context, means Hamas might accept a Palestinian state within the pre-1967

borders if it doesn’t also need to recognize Israel’s legitimacy. It also means Hamas can earn compliments for clarifying its terror operations are directed against “Zionists,” and not “Jews.”

Still, whichever blind alley these positions pull the Palestinians down, it is likely to be more popular than any concessions made by Abbas on final status issues like Jerusalem, or the descendants of the 1948 Palestinian refugees.

Can Trump’s enthusiasm for peace enable the emergence of a Palestinian leader who is willing to participate in good faith negotiations—as Abbas repeatedly says he is—but who is not tainted by corruption, political back-stabbing and illegal retention of power, as Abbas is? It is a tall order, which is why the president may eventually need to settle for much less than a glittering peacesigning ceremony in the Rose Garden.

Spinner invented to stop rock-throwing Palestinians

The inventor of the ubiquitous stress-reducing toy says she came up with the idea during a trip to Israel in the 1980s, during the First Intifada, as a way to distract the “young boys throwing rocks at police officers.”

Catherine Hettinger told CNN Money last week that she first brainstormed the gadget while visiting her sister in the Jewish state and hearing about the clashes between Palestinian youth and Israeli security.

She first considered designing a “soft rock that kids could throw,” according to CNN Money. “It started as a way of promoting peace,” Hettinger said.

Upon returning home to Orlando, Hettinger put together the first fidget spinner — a propeller-like toy that spins around a center bearing.

Hettinger secured a patent for the device in 1997, but sales languished for over a decade, and Hasbro declined to market it. Hettinger did not have the money to pay the $400 fee to renew her patent in 2005.

It was not until last year that the fidget spinner became a sensation, appearing everywhere from office cubicles to elementary school classrooms. Some tout the toy as a stress reliever, but others find them disruptive and distracting.

Charles won’t visit Israel Prince Charles of Britain will not be visiting Israel, despite media reports citing senior officials saying he would. The heir to the throne, would have been the first member of the royal family to make an official state visit to Israel since its founding.

“Her Majesty’s Government makes decisions on Royal Visits based on recommendations from the Royal Visits Committee, taking into account advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office,” a Foreign Office spokeswoman said in a statement. “The Committee never proposed a royal visit to Israel for 2017. Plans for 2018 will be announced in due course.”

The British tabloid The Sun reported Sunday that the decision made by the Foreign Office may have been taken to avoid upsetting Arab nations in the region.

Joint Chiefs chait in Israel Gen. Joseph Dunford, the U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Israel on Monday for an official visit as guest of his Israeli counterpart, Lt. Gen Gadi Eizenkot. It is Dunford’s third visit to Israel.

Dunford is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and additional military commanders to discuss cooperation between the two countries’ armies and mutual challenges, the IDF said in a statement.

Texas denies adoptions Texas lawmakers were set to vote this week on a bill that would allow state-funded or private faith-based adoption agencies to reject couples seeking to adopt children if they are Jewish.

The House proposal also would allow potential adoptive couples to be rejected if they are Muslim, interfaith, gay or single, according to reports.

Proponents say the measure will support the religious freedom of adoption agencies and foster care providers. Opponents say it violates the Constitution’s requirement of equal protection under the law.

On Saudi video, no Israel

The State Department called the posting of a video by the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia that removed Israel from an announcement about the president’s upcoming trip to the region an “inadvertent mistake.”

On Monday, Rep. Eliot Engel of the Bronx criticized the State Department for “editing out” Israel in the video posted on the Riyadh embassy website and Arabic-language Twitter account.

The videos were no longer available on Monday afternoon and a video on the embassy site contained the announcement that included Israel.

A State Department official told JTA that the embassy had taken the video from the social media account of a private Saudi citizen without realizing that Israel had been edited out.

The pontiff held a 45-minute audience at the Vatican on Monday with the group, which was led by Rabbi Edgar Gluck.

A video on the Yeshiva World News website and also posted to YouTube shows the pope swaying to the music as members of the delegation dance and serenade him with the song, “Long years shall satiate him.”

Rio mayor toasts Israel The mayor of Rio de Janeiro spoke up for Israel before some 2,000 people during a celebration of Israel’s Independence Day. Marcelo Crivella, whose four-year term started in January, has been a longtime friend of the Jewish community and an enthusiast of the Jewish state, which he reportedly has visited some 40 times.

“Israel is proud of its 69 years of fight and victories. It has shown to the world that it is a strong democracy surrounded by the most barbarian atrocities and totalitarian regimes,” Crivella, a prominent evangelical leader, said at the celebrations held Sunday. “Israel, which has a total area that is equivalent to half of that of Rio de Janeiro state, is very important to us.”

German prez swipes Bibi German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in a gibe at Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, told an audience at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem that diverse voices are the “oxygen of democracy.”

Steinmeier, who met earlier on Sunday with Netanyahu, was criticizing the prime minister for canceling a meeting last month with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel after he refused to nix a meeting with representatives of two leftwing NGOs: B’Tselem, a human rights watchdog, and Breaking the Silence, a veterans’ group that alleges the Israeli army abuses Palestinians.

“I believe that civil-society organizations which are part of the social debate deserve our respect as democrats, even when they take a critical view of a government — in Germany, but also here in Israel,” Steinmeier also said.

Ministers praise Trump A parade of Israeli Cabinet ministers praised President Trump and lambasted the Palestinian Authority at the Jerusalem Post’s annual conference on Sunday in Manhatan.

Five ministers from Israel’s right-wing governing coalition, as well as its consul general presented variations on the same message: The Trump administration is pro-Israel, and peace with the Palestinians is close to impossible.

“The United States of America, after a few years in which the situation was completely different, sees eye to eye [with Israel] the danger posed by Iran,” said Dani Dayan, Israel’s consul general in New York. “The United States of America and Israel have a common view, and almost an exact view, of the situation.”

The Israel Prison Service released a video that shows Marwan Barghouti, the high-profile Palestinian prisoner leading a hunger strike, secretly eating in the bathroom of his cell.

The video released Sunday shows Barghouti eating twice, on April 27 and May 5.

Haaretz cited unnamed sources in the Prison Service as saying they set up Barghouti with the food in order to see if he was sticking to his hunger strike. Barghouti is being held in Kishon Prison, to where he was transferred after launching his strike.

“As I said from the very beginning, this hunger strike was never about the conditions of the convicted terrorists, which meet international standards,” Israel’s minister of public security, Gilad Erdan, said in a statement following the video’s elease. “It is about advancing Marwan Barghouti’s political ambitions to replace Abu Mazen.”
