Clouds over the Kotel Team Trump won’t put Wall and Jerusalem in Israel For The Jewish Star President Trump’s supporters in the pro-Israel community were thrown into a tizzy this week after administration operatives made — and then double-downed on — statements questioning Israeli sovereignty over the Western Wall and, later, over Jerusalem itself.

The furor, just days before a presidential trip to Israel, began on Monday, when U.S. representatives in Jerusalem declined an Israeli request to have Prime Minister Netanyahu accompany the president when Trump visits the Western Wall. An official, later identified by Israel’s Channel 2 as David Berns, political counselor at the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem, reportedly snapped, “This isn’t your territory. This is in the West Bank.”

At the time of the proclamation, “there was considerable excitement,” but JAHM has yet to live up to its potential, said Jonathan Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University. “So much money is spent on Jewish education in the United States that the fact that we have not been able to harness this golden opportunity given to us by the government, and really develop a month that would affect every American Jew, is a sign of the disorganization that we’ve seen — ultimately it’s a sign of a problem.”

In 2010, President Obama hosted the first Jewish American Heritage Month reception at the White House with such Jewish luminaries as Sandy Koufax and musician Regina Spektor, but the program was cut in 2013 due to the budget sequester. Also in 2010, Jewish-American astronaut Garret Reisman brought the original proclamation with him aboard the Atlantis space shuttle.

Jewish groups, however, have been hesitant to commit money to the commemoration.

“I would think that all these national [Jewish] organizations would get behind it, but everyone is struggling for funding,” said Zerivitz, who is on the JAHM board. “[The] Holocaust gets the emotions going in the American Jewish community, and Holocaust things are much easier to fund than American Jewish history things.”

Sarna is optimistic about JAHM’s future.

“This is a lot easier than making peace in the Middle East, believe me,” he said.

By Josefin Dolsten, JTA Since 2006, only one religious group in the U.S. has had a federally proclaimed month celebrating its history. That’s when President George W. Bush officially declared May as Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM).

Yet JAHM has fallen under the radar.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Marcia Zerivitz, who was one of the driving forces behind lobbying Congress to establish the month.

JAHM’s current annual budget is about $10,000 and consists entirely of individual donations, according to Ivy Barsky, director of the National Museum of American Jewish History and a member of the JAHM advisory committee. Barsky hopes to change that. Her Philadelphia museum recently took over as JAHM’s public face and organizer.

“One of the original goals of Jewish American Heritage Month that we haven’t necessarily realized as well as we’d like is teaching the non-Jewish world in America about the contributions of American Jewry to this country,” Barsky said.

Educating the wider American public was the goal of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Sen. Arlen Specter, who in 2005 introduced legislation in Congress to establish the month.

“If you educated and raised awareness about contributions throughout American history all over the country, it would make people more familiar with the Jewish community and our people and hopefully impact a reduction of anti-Semitism and intolerance,” Wasserman Schultz told JTA. “It was exhilarating,” she said. “It was the first legislation that I passed as a member of

By Ron Kampeas, JTA Once it was the job of the shtadlan — a literal translation from Hebrew is “intercessor� — to make the case for the Jews to the czar, the sultan, the king.

Now a couple of the president’s men are seeking shtadlans to make their case to the Jews.

Stephen Bannon, President Trump’s top strategic adviser, and Sebastian Gorka, an adviser on counterterrorism, have met, been photographed with and vouched for by Jewish figures happy to counter the impression that either is no friend of the Jews.

Gorka, under scrutiny for his purported ties to the Hungarian right, name-checked a number of Jewish supporters when he spoke last week at the Jerusalem Post Conference in New York. “The two Davids — Ira, Bruce, Jeff, Mort, Joel, Noah — you know who you are, OK, especially thank you to Rabbi Billet, who wrote this Friday an amazing piece,� he said, according to The Atlantic.

Hershel Billet, the rabbi of the Young Island of Woodmere, on of the largest modern Orthodox synagogues in the United States, had written an essay defending Gorka against charges that “he is an anti-Semite with connections to fascist groups in his late father’s native Hungary.� Bruce Abramson, a lawyer, and Jeff Ballabon, a media strategist, have penned similar open letters of recommendation.

Joel Pollak, a senior editor-at-large at Breitbart News, has called charges that Gorka is anti-Semitic a “smear.� And Mort Klein, the national president of the Zionist Organization of America, has declared that Gorka is a “great friend of Israel.�

Klein also has defended Bannon against charges that the news site he once led, Breitbart, courts anti-Semites within the so-called “alt-right.� Bannon recently posed for a selfie alongside Shmuley Boteach, the celebrity rabbi and one-time Republican congressional candidate, who tweeted, “Steve is a great, stalwart friend of the Jewish state.�

Non-Jewish politicians have always relied on Jewish surrogates to help make their case to Jewish voters.

What’s unusual here is that Bannon and Gorka have been identified — their defenders say unfairly — with movements deemed by many in the Jewish community as hostile to Jews.

Amid all the buzz around Israel’s “start-up nation,” including Intel’s recent $15 billion acquisition of Mobileye, a lesser-known phenomenon is the high-tech and hyper-efficient Israeli dairy industry.

Surprised? Don’t be. The combination of Israelis’ high demand for dairy products and the Jewish state’s well-documented ingenuity makes the cutting-edge dairy industry a natural development in what the Bible describes as a “land flowing with milk and honey.” The demand for dairy in Israel is particularly high for the Shavuot festival, when eating dairy is a holiday tradition.

Michal Kraus, executive director of the Israeli Dairy Board, tells JNS.org that Israelis prefer milk, yogurt, cottage cheese or soft cheeses during the warmer summer months because these dairy products are cooler and easier to digest.

Hard cheeses tend to be consumed in foods such as toast and pizza, and more frequently during the winter months. Israeli supermarket shelves feature about 800 varieties of dairy products.

The Israeli Dairy Board’s estimates show that last year 32 percent of Israelis consumed soft cheeses, 30 percent drank milk, 26 percent consumed hard cheeses and 12 percent ate other dairy products such as desserts.

The latest trends in Israel’s dairy market involve “going back to basic, nostalgic products but also clean label [production]” and the “reduction of salt and sugar,” says Tzvika Dor, director of business development at the premium dairy plant Gad Dairy, whose production represents 5 percent of the Israeli dairy market.

Milk production in Israel is carried out under a quota system that exists in only two other nations—Canada and Norway.

Israel’s dairy sector functions in a unified manner because the country is relatively small, Kraus explains. All the industry’s players know at any given moment about virtually each individual cow, what its environment is and if it carries any germs. This information, she says, provides an advantage in the cultivation of herds — Israel uses artificial insemination to breed cows — and enables increased milk production.

More than 80 percent of the country’s cows are registered in the Israel Herd Book, a computerized database that allows tracing the genealogy, history, milk yield and other factors for each cow. Theses metrics “are monitored continuously for production health and reproduction,” Maltz says.

their milk. Based on this technique, they rolled out a new brand of milk, “Chalav Hameshek,” which is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.

Tnuva aims to expand the project—still in its early stages at a few dairy farms—so it will ultimately be implemented for all farms whose milk is delivered to the company, says its head scientist, Zeev Paikowsky.

One challenge is milk plants may close for several consecutive days for holidays or Shabbat.

“In this case, the [facility] gets organized by allowing sufficient storage by dehydrating surplus milk and delaying milk evacuation from the farms that have sufficient storage space,” Maltz says.

At Gad Dairy, being prepared for Shavout means increasing production as many as five or six months before the holiday, Dor says.

breed of dairy cattle, which has adapted to a warm climate — produce about 3,000 gallons of milk per cow per year. This figure is “among the highest productions in the world, if not the highest,” says Maltz.

With the government’s support, Israeli farmers have learned to breed cows by better utilizing the natural environment, despite the nation’s arid climate and chronic water shortages. The farmers’ methods include feeding cows with recycled natural foods, using recycled water to grow fodder and reusing manure in agriculture. Several delegations from other countries have visited Israel to learn from these techniques.

Personal Word We lived in a small New Hampshire city with a handful of other Jewish families. On occasions when a customer in our store or an acquaintance, not realizing my mother was Jewish, would make a reference to Jews being “cheap” or “greedy,” she’d come back with a quick rejoinder. She often talked about the lynching of Leo Frank, the Atlanta factory superintendent falsely convicted of the murder of a 13-year-old girl, and the impact it had on young Jews of her time. Beyond that, I recall her speaking highly of those, like Pope John XXIII, whose efforts to right past wrongs made them living antidotes to centuries of ingrained anti-Semitism.

Most of all, my mother was not only a proud Jew but praiseworthy of the accomplishments of other Jews. She was a regular viewer of “The Jack Paar Show,” especially enjoying the appearances of entertainers like Alan King and Buddy Hackett, or of raconteurs like Oscar Levant and Milt Kamen. Finding out that an author, scientist or some other public figure was Jewish, she was sure to let me know, if I didn’t already. And though she didn’t live to see Sen. Joe Lieberman nominated for vice president, she would have kvelled to have seen that day.

And while her English was inflected with a Maine accent, she always had a Yiddish expression (usually quoting her mother) that was apt for any occasion. My favorite was “Vos iz oyfn lung, iz oyfn tsung” (“what’s on your lung is on your tongue,” or “the words one says are from

what’s really inside”). I wish I had written then all down; they were priceless.

Is it any wonder, then, with a mother like this, that I wound up working in the Jewish community? As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Advocating for Israel, fighting anti-Semitism, worrying about Jewish continuity: My mother cared about each, and though the names and faces — and places — may have changed a bit, the challenges remain the same. Her passion for her country, her people and her family, in my eyes, was unmatched.

I’m glad that some of it rubbed off on me.

So Ma, on this Mother’s Day, thank you: for the life you led, and for the inspiration you’ve been.

By Daniel S. Mariaschin, for JTA My sisters and I called her “Ma.” She stood 4-foot-10, yet was looked up to by everyone who encountered her, regardless of their station in life: rabbis and educators, bankers, customers and neighbors, her lifelong friends and people who just met her one time.

To my father, she was a perfect soul mate who shared her interests and view of the world. Her siblings adored her, and her grandchildren, who knew her as “Nana,” loved to be in her presence.

My mother and her brother were brought to America from Lithuania by my grandmother, who was coming to reunite with my grandfather, already here, in Bangor, Maine. She was raised there, and was always a staunch daughter of the Pine Tree State, notwithstanding her subsequent homes in Brooklyn, New Jersey, New Hampshire and North Carolina.

In her early years, she was exposed to some of the transformational events of the 20th century: World War I, women’s suffrage, the Great Depression and the Holocaust. My mother was a fervently patriotic American, often recalling how the family arrived in Bangor on the Fourth of July. One of her favorite books was Mary Antin’s autobiographical “The Promised Land,” about a young immigrant girl’s life and experiences in her adopted country. She loved the music of Stephen Foster, which she sometimes played on the piano, and especially that of Irving Berlin.

But there were two other factors that most influenced her worldview: Zionism/Israel and the Holocaust.

At age 12, when the new synagogue was dedicated in Bangor, she was asked to speak, representing the young people of the community. In her remarks, as reported in the Bangor Daily Commercial, on March 10, 1913, she said: “We look upon our synagogue as our fortress and the pillar of Judaism. Our purpose is to once more uplift the Hebrew flag without wishing in any way to detract from the greatness of, or letting in any way affect our allegiance to, the Stars and Stripes. We hope to make ourselves deservant of the greatness of our ancestors and worthy of taking our place as standard bearers of our nation.”

A voracious reader, she praised Robert St. John’s landmark 1959 biography of David BenGurion, which held a special place in our bookcase. When I met St. John many years later, I was pleased to be able to convey that accolade in person. She was the family correspondent with her lone cousin in Israel, and a photo of her and her kibbutznik family adorned our mantelpiece for years. We had no TV in 1956, so we listened intently each night to CBS Radio reports on the Suez War. In 1967, I remember how impressed she was with Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban’s memorable speech to the United Nations Security Council. And she mourned the loss of her cousin’s 22-year-old son, who fell on the Golan Heights in the Yom Kippur War. Ma was an inveterate writer of letters to the editor, a few of which were published in the Charlotte Observer, when she lived with my sister and her family in North Carolina after my father passed away. Her letters were invariably focused on the international double standard to which Israel was subjected, and to the Jewish state being surrounded by implacable enemies.

After her first visit to Israel, in 1965, the Business and Professional Women’s Club invited her to give a report on the trip. I tagged along to operate the slide projector and vividly remember how proud she was to speak of her experiences.

The Holocaust weighed heavily on my mother.

The part of her family that remained in Lithuania was wiped out, most likely in 1941 (save for a cousin who managed to survive and whose existence was not known to us for many years). She would talk often about letters that arrived from Lithuania, probably in 1940 or 1941, beseeching the family to find a way to bring them to the States. That the family was unable to do this troubled my mother greatly for the rest of her life.

All of this made her a fierce fighter against anti-Semitism. Another book in our bookcase was John Roy Carlson’s “Under Cover,” which recounted the activity of the German-American Bund and other pro-Nazi organizations in the U.S.

When the war broke out, it appeared that Israel, an established Jewish state for less than 20 years, could be destroyed by the combined strength of its Arab enemies — Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait and Syria.

“They were about to crush and eliminate Israel: They bragged about it,” said Oliner, former mayor of the Village of Lawrence.

“They outnumbered Israel 20-to-1 militarily.

A miracle occurred and the Israeli Air Force wiped out their air forces, and Israel gained control of the Golan Heights and Judea and Samaria.”

The military victory not only more than doubled the territory under Israel’s control; its army captured the Old City of Jerusalem from Jordan, including kotel, the iconic Western Wall, which came under Jewish governance for the first time in 2,000 years.

“It’s extraordinary to help bring unity in the Jewish community,” said Oliner, co-president of the Religious Zionists of America, one of the groups that will participate in the Washington event, and an event co-chair along with his wife, Reva. “We will be thanking Congress and G-d for a unified Jerusalem.”

Lawrence residents Shalom and Iris Maidenbaum are also co-chairs. “We are Zionists, and are eternally grateful and proud of the state of Israel,” Iris said.

With many diverse Jewish groups attending — ranging from Alpha Epsilon Pi, a global Jewish fraternity, to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a museum that focuses on racism in the United States and the history of the Holocaust —Jews can concentrate on what unites them instead of what divides them, Shalom said.

“The unification is a symbol of unity on many levels,” he said. “It will be a cross-section of Jewish organizations. Those from the left, the right, Orthodox, Conservative and Reformed.”

Rabbi Gideon Shloush will represent two organizations at the event. Since becoming a rabbi about 20 years ago, he has been involved with both the New York Board of Rabbis, the largest international body of its type in the world, and the Religious Zionists of America. He is an executive vice president of RZA. Rabbi Shloush credited Oliner with organizing the event, and called it a “reminder of the longstanding bipartisan commitment of the U.S. Congress to the State of Israel.”

South Shore Rep. Kathleen Rice, said she looked forward to participating in Wednesday’s event.

“The 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem is an important opportunity to reflect on the progress that we’ve seen over the past half century, and to reaffirm our commitment to Israel’s security and the pursuit of lasting peace,” she said.

Why what Trump told Russians worries Israel

By Ron Kampeas, JTA WASHINGTON — Thanks to the unfiltered confessional that is Twitter, as of Tuesday morning we knew this: President Donald Trump shared information with Russia about “terrorism and flight safety,” as he put it.

Trump was responding, after about 12 hours, to a Washington Post report that he shared highly classified information with the Russian foreign minister and Russian ambassador when he met with them last week. The information, sources told the Post and confirmed to other outlets, could be used to reveal sources of an ally’s intelligence on the Islamic State terrorist group.

Early Tuesday afternoon, the New York Times and other media identified Israel as the source of the compromised intelligence.

Trump in his tweets confirmed that he

shared the information but did not say whether or not it was classified. However, he specified that he had an “absolute right” to share the information, which could refer to laws that exempt the president from restrictions on revealing classified information.

“As President I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety,” Trump said.

“Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism.” ISIS is an acronym for the Islamic State terrorist group.

A lot of questions are not yet fully answered:

What did Trump reveal?

According to the Washington Post, Trump shared information about Islamic State plans to

bomb aircraft with laptops. The Trump administration has banned laptops as carry-on luggage on U.S.-bound planes originating in some Middle Eastern countries, and reportedly plans to extend the ban to Europe.

The crux is in the details of what he shared.

“He described how the Islamic State was pursuing elements of a specific plot and how much harm such an attack could cause under varying circumstances,” the Washington Post reported, and “revealed the city in the Islamic State’s territory where the U.S. intelligence partner detected the threat.” The Times said the information Trump relayed was “granular” — that is, highly specific.

Is the White House denying it?

Not quite. Officials have said the story, “as reported,” is “false” — but things get murkier

on the details. H.R. McMaster, the national security adviser, and Rex Tillerson, the secretary of state, who were in the room, said Trump did not discuss “sources, methods or military operations.” But the newspapers’ accounts do not allege that sources or methods or military operations are what were revealed. Instead, the concern is that the Russians and their allies could use details in the information to track down the source.

How likely is it that the Russians could trace the information to its source?

According to reports, the White House is taking seriously the threat that the information could be sourced. Thomas Bossert, Trump’s assistant for counterterrorism, alerted the CIA and the National Security Agency, and one of his subordinates said the information should be removed from internal summaries of Trump’s meeting.

What are the stakes?

Huge. It’s been enormously difficult to infiltrate the Islamic State, which cultivates only the truest believers for its operations.

While press reports on Tuesday said Israel was the source, any one of the United States’ Middle East allies — Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, the Gulf states — could fit the bill of a country that would prefer that the U.S. closely hold whatever intelligence it shares.

Trump had a call scheduled with Jordan’s King Abdullah on Tuesday morning, but it may have been set up previously, ahead of Trump’s Middle East tour next week.

Israelis were wondering if it was their country that was potentially burned in the exchange.

Ronen Bergman, the well-connected Yediot Acharonot reporter, reposted on Twitter a January story revealing that intelligence officials in the outgoing Obama administration warned Israeli counterparts to be careful about what kinds of intelligence they shared with the Trump administration because of alleged ties between Russia and some members of Trump’s entourage.

“The president has full authority to reveal classified information, but what will the ally think,” Keren Betzalel, an editor on Israel’s Channel 2, wrote Tuesday morning on Twitter.

Danny Yatom, a former director of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, told The Jerusalem Post that he did not know if Israel was the ally, but expressed concerns about Trump’s revelations.

“If the information is sensitive, it can harm the security of the intelligence source or lead to other damage,” he said.

Alan Dershowitz, the pro-Israel activist and constitutional law professor who has been counseling patience and restraint to a U.S. Jewish community rattled by Trump’s flirtations with the far right, has now had it with the president.

“This is the most serious charge ever made against a sitting president of the United States,” he told CNN. “Let’s not underestimate it.”

Dershowitz also speculated that either Israel or Jordan was the unnamed country potentially compromised as a result of the incident.

So if the ally is Israel, what’s at stake?

One of the closest U.S. intelligence relationships is with Israel. It was launched in 1956 when Israel secured Nikita Khrushchev’s “secret speech” to a Communist congress denouncing Stalin’s reign of terror, signaling an evolution in how the Soviet Union would conduct its domestic and foreign policies. Speech in hand, the first stop for Mossad director Isser Harel was the CIA. More recent cooperative successes reportedly include Stuxnet, the computer virus that crippled Iran’s uranium enrichment program in 2009-10, helping to bring the country to the negotiating table to talk about curbing its nuclear program, and the 2008 assassination of Hezbollah’s operations chief Imad Mughniyeh, as well as the exposure and frustration of multiple planned Hezbollah strikes in Europe and elsewhere. Shalhevet gala eyes miracle of Jerusalem Midreshet Shalhevet celebrated the upcoming 50th anniversary of Yom Yerushalayim at its Ninth Annual Scholarship Dinner on Sunday, May 7, at Temple Hillel in North Woodmere.

“We honor Jerusalem because [it] is at the very heart of our school mission,” said Menahelet Esther Eisenman. “We teach support and advocacy for the state of Israel, and we recognize that the Torah of Jerusalem has shaped our limud Torah. It is incumbent upon us, at the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, to pay attention to this miracle that has become part of the fabric of our lives.”

The evening opened with a moving video showing some of the highlights of the Six Day War. Assistant Principal Shaindy Lisker began the evening’s presentation with welcoming remarks and introduced Rosh Mesivta Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman, who spoke about the importance to world Jewry of the victory in 1967, how the hashgacha of Hashem was manifest and reinstilled Jewish pride within the greater world Jewish community.

Graduation-bound Shulamith 8th tours Washington

By Sara Stein, Grade 8 Each year, Shulamith eighth graders travel to Washington to celebrate the end of their elementary school years and their upcoming graduation. On May 10 and 11, the Class of 2017, accompanied by Associate Principal Dr. Evelyn Gross and by their teachers, Morah Chana Schwartz, Yaffa Schreier, and Rachel Steiner, set out bright and early.

The excursion began with a stop at the Herr’s Factory in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, where they learned how potato chips and other Herr’s snacks are produced. The highlight of the visit was eating warm potato chips, straight off of the production line.

In Washington, the girls visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to learn more about the Shoah and be able to offer testimony to the next generation.

Taking advantage of blue skies and warm

weather, they visited some of the city’s beautiful and meaningful memorials, including an evening stop at the illuminated World War Two Memorial. A delicious dinner was enjoyed during a boat ride on the Potomac.

After the long day, the girls arrived at their hotel and surprised two of their friends with a birthday cake and party before heading to their rooms to get some rest.

In the morning, after a soulful tefilah and a hearty breakfast, they set out for another full day of touring. They visited the Museum of American History, the Capitol building, and the Newseum. The endless rain didn’t dampen the girls’ spirits and everyone had a great time while learning so much.

The group left Washington at 5 pm, saddened that their trip was almost over but excited to be heading home.

Second-grader Maya, who now sports a summer-friendly bob, said that she was inspired by seeing her older sister donate and a desire to “help sick kids look normal until they are strong and healthy enough to grow back their own hair and feel pretty again.”

Orit Lax said that for her and her daughter, Adina, donating is “very personal as my husband is a cancer survivor. Doing this together is a bonding experience we are glad to be repeating two years after our last donation.”

Yael, manager of Fun Salon on Hempstead Avenue, which contributed the haircuts, said that the salon’s “family-friendly environment” made it a great fit for this kind of initiative. She wished the participants “continued growth in acts of kindness.”

Rabbi Gary Menchel, YHT’s principal, expressed pride in everyone at the school who “embraced this extraordinary act of kindness and compassion, which reflects the core of our school’s mission.”

Oxford University’s Corpus Christi College, the Center for Jewish History and Yeshiva University Museum last weekend opened an exhibition of breath-taking treasures seen in America for the first time.

“500 Years of Treasures from Oxford” chronicles Corpus Christi College’s pioneering role in the study of scripture, humanities and sciences over the course of five centuries.

The extraordinary exhibit features an array of ancient manuscripts, early printed books and Tudor silver. The Hebrew collection has been called the most important collection of AngloJewish manuscripts in the world. The College’s Special Collections are normally kept in a vault and rarely accessible, except to researchers.

The exhibition will continue through Aug. 6 at Yeshiva University Museum, based at the Center for Jewish History, 15 W. 16th St.).

Among the 50 scintillating works are a 1,000-year old Greek manuscript, a design by Dürer and the first publications of the scientific revolution. Visitors will see a late 12th-century Ashkenazi siddur (book of daily prayers), thought to be the oldest extant anywhere.

Owned by a Sephardic Jew from the Iberian Peninsula who had emigrated to England, it

contains his hand-written notes in Judeo-Arabic on his business dealings.

Other priceless objects include a 13th-century manuscript of Samuel and Chronicles that was used by Christians to learn Hebrew and two of the oldest manuscripts of Rashi in the world.

Menahelet Eisenman then took the floor and spoke about Naomi Shemer’s iconic song, “Yerushalayim shel Zahav.” Even 50 years later, the song stands almost as a second Israeli national anthem. The soldiers sang it as they prepared to enter the Old City on June 6, 1967,

and again at victory. Naomi Shemer, along with everyone in the country, was listening to the news and heard the broadcast of the victory in the Old City, “Har Habayit Byadeinu.”

She heard the soldiers singing her song and immediately revised it, adding a stanza about the return to Jerusalem. Her evocative lyrics underscore both the pain of exile, and the joy of reunification.

Eisenman then introduced Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, executive vice president emeritus of the Orthodox Union, who discussed the importance of Yom Yerushalayim to those of us living in the United States.

My love for Jerusalem is built by all these great people before me.”

W

e’ll call him Gabi (not his real name), a most unlikely recruit. None of us had any idea how and why he had gotten into our unit — he was overweight, to put it mildly, and was always the last to finish every run, the last to get his gun cleaned and ready for inspection, and the last to get out to the parade ground in the morning.

On our masa’ot (forced marches) it became obvious that he was in the wrong place, and in a lot of trouble. I could hear his heavy breathing, groaning and agonizing as he struggled to keep up somewhere behind me, until finally I could not bear it any more. We were heading up a difficult hill, so I told him he could grab on to the straps of my back pouches and I’d try and help pull him.

Very quickly I realized I was in a lot of trouble. It’s not like I had such an easy time myself, and now I was pulling someone else.

And then something incredible happened: one of the guys pushed in between us, grabbed Gabi and started pulling him in my stead, and a few minutes later someone else pushed in and repeated the same exercise; all night long through this grueling trek, in what could not have been planned, the entire unit took it upon themselves to give new meaning to the IDF tradition, that “no man gets left behind.”

Simply put, once a few of us made looking out for our buddy a priority, it became everyone’s priority. Although it might have appeared that we were pulling Gabi, in a way,

he was also pulling us, and we were really all pulling each other — which, of course, is what being part of a unit is all about. he first of this week’s double portion, Behar, begins with a fascinating mitzvah: Every seven years in the land of Israel, we are meant to allow the land to lie fallow.

We don’t farm, and people have time off from tilling the soil, to nurture their souls.

And after every seventh Sabbatical year, the 50th year is a Yovel (Jubilee) year, when once again we allow the land to lie fallow. And at the end of this 50th Jubilee year, all lands return to their tribal owners by heritage, and indentured servants go free. Thus we are reminded that nothing is really ours, and we do not own the land, it is a gift we are given, with which we are meant to serve a higher purpose.

The Torah tells us (Vayikra 25:9) that this moment, when the lands are restored to their original owners and servants go free, occurs at the end of Yom Kippur, when the shofar is sounded throughout the land. Indeed, even today, we blow the shofar at the end of Yom Kippur, recalling this mitzvah.

Why was the shofar blown throughout the land? The Sefer Hachinuch points out that this must have been an extremely difficult thing to do.

The seventh Shemitah (i.e., the 49th) year, when the land lay fallow, was followed by the Jubilee year when, again, one did not work the land, all the slaves went free.

For many people who had purchased land which was worked by indentured servants

similarly acquired, the end of Yom Kippur presented a difficult new reality. Free labor, all gone; the land one had depended on, now restored to its original owners.

Suggests the Chinuch: when the owners heard the blast of the shofar they knew they were not alone — everyone had to free their indentured servants.

But why did that help?

Perhaps because we are tremendously influenced by what everyone else is doing. hink about it: why did we all throw away our wide, fat ties? Fat ties actually make more sense — you are less likely to stain your shirt; but no one is wearing wide ties and we want to be in style. Why would anyone ever start smoking? The most significant reason kids start smoking is peer pressure; they want to belong. Often, changes for teens in family roles and social status along with physical changes can lead to much insecurity; if smoking a cigarette is the price for being included, then so be it.

And that is exactly what a person would be experiencing as all of a sudden, on the day after Yom Kippur, he awakens to a new reality where he no longer owns his land, and he has no servants to help him till his fields.

What will people think of him? Will he or she still command the same status and respect?

Isn’t it interesting that in the parsha of Vayakhel, Moshe gathers the people together, the entire congregation of Israel, to build a Tabernacle (the Mishkan), on the day after Yom Kippur (see Rashi Shemot 35:1), the day on

which the Jewish people are meant to come together as the piercing sound of the shofar stills dissent and bonds in the shared experience of the beginning of a new year.

Indeed the Rambam in his Hilchot Deot (6:1) points out that it is the way of man to be drawn after the behaviors and opinions of his friends and compatriots. As such it behooves us to choose our environment well. And a person who finds him or herself in a negative environment must do everything he or she can to move away from such places, even to the point of leaving a country if evil presides there. (Imagine how different the world might have been if all the Jews of Germany had left in 1933 as soon as Hitler came to power.)

Indeed, this may well be what having a Jewish homeland in the Land of Israel is all about: here we are meant to create an environment where in everything we do, we recall that blast of the shofar at the end of Yom Kippur, when we are reminded that we don’t really own the land or anything else, it is simply given to us on loan in order to create a better world, a world in which no human being is ever left behind.

Anti-tank trenches and Jerusalem’s survival AlAn JAy Gerber Kosher BooKworm

T

his week’s essay is devoted to one short chapter in the life and rich legacy of Rabbi Shlomo Goren, when the fate of Jerusalem was determined as the Jewish state was re-established in May 1948.

The two works under review that are the sources for this episode are “Rabbi Shlomo Goren: Torah Sage and General” (Urim Publications, 2006) by Shalom Freedman, and “With Might and Strength: An Autobiography” (Maggid Books, 2016), by Rabbi Shlomo Goren, edited by Avi Rath and translated by Miryam Blum.

Right after the declaration of the state of Israel’s independence, Israeli army intelligence was informed that at 11 am on Shabbat, the Arab Legion was planning a tank invasion of the western sector of Jerusalem, where the new state’s capital was situated.

How to block this planned tank invasion of civilian targets on a Shabbat required not just military planning but civilian assistance in the digging — on Friday night — of a large anti-tank network along the northwest corridor bordering the very center of the city. It was to be this very timing that brought into play the involvement of

Rabbi Shlomo Goren and others to determine the legitimate nature of the threat that would warrant an apparent desecration of Shabbat to save both lives and property.

Here is Shalom Freedman’s relatively brief take on this largely forgotten saga: “There is a remarkable incident from the War of Independence reported in the ‘Army Encyclopedia.’ It relates to the siege of Jerusalem. According to the encyclopedia, on May 14 the commander of the Jerusalem forces came to Rabbi Goren and told him that the Jordanians were about to invade. He said that there was no available manpower to dig trenches that could protect the city in the north from where the invaders were to come. He asked Rabbi Goren to mobilize the yeshiva students, the only available population capable of doing the work.

“Rabbi Goren resisted, as this would involve causing a massive violation of the Sabbath. He said that he could not do this on his own authority, and went to Chief Rabbi Herzog who gave his heter. But this was not enough. He had to go as well to Rav [Yosef Tzvi] Dushinsky of the Eida HaHareidit, and ask his permission. Rav Dushinsky was sympathetic, but said he himself could not give permission.

“Rabbi Goren realized that the fate of the city was in his hands. So he went himself from yeshiva to yeshiva, mobilizing students for the work.

nefesh involved in saving the city required doing this work on Shabbat, making it not a sin at all, but indeed a requirement. The students were persuaded by Rabbi Goren, and worked all night digging trenches in the northern part of the city.

“On the morning of the next day, the Jordanian tanks approached the city and the first tank that entered fell into one of the anti-tank trenches that had been built. When a second started to go in, the rest of the tanks turned around and went back.

“The city was saved from the Jordanian forces in great part due to the initiative and determination of Rabbi Goren.”

far more detailed description of this saga is related in Rabbi Goren’s autobiography, based on his diary from that time. With these two accounts, you will realize a greater appreciation of the risks taken by those over 1,000 yeshiva students, their leaders, and by Rabbi Goren himself.

The areas immediately affected by this effort are familiar to us today: Rachavia, Geula, Me’ah She’arim, Beit Yisrael and Batei Ungarin.

Many of these communities now constitute the very center of western Jerusalem and are the religious and cultural heart of the city.

Digging these ditches served to save a city and, by extension, the nation itself. For had Jerusalem been overtaken and destroyed, it would not have taken long for the rest of the newly created Jewish state to have been decimated.

We have much to learn in this chapter in the history of the Holy City, lessons dealing in true religious leadership, bravery in both word and action — urgent action that resulted in the very saving of lives, lives so precious to our people especially coming on the cusp of the Holocaust.

As we approach Yom Yerushalayim, the saga related above of a history from 69 years ago should allow us all to better appreciate the final unification of Jerusalem 50 years ago.

This appreciation will best be commemorated in our liturgy and prayers on that day themed to the recitation of Hallel, of Tehillim, of praise and thanksgiving as befits our religious traditions.

The Posek: His role and responsibility rAbbi dAvid etenGoff

P

arashat Behar begins with the following two pasukim: “And the L-rd spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, ‘Speak to the children of Israel and you shall say to them: When you come to the land that I am giving you, the land shall rest a Sabbath to the L-rd’.”

(Sefer Vayikra 25:1-2. This and all Bible and Rashi translations from The Judaica Press Complete Tanach) These verses generate the very famous question found in several sources in rabbinic literature: “What [special relevance] does the subject of shemittah [the “release” of fields in the seventh year] have with Mount Sinai? Were not all the commandments stated at Sinai?”

Rashi, basing himself upon the midrash, provides the following celebrated answer: “However, [this teaches us that] just as with shemittah, its general principles and its finer details

were all stated at Sinai, likewise, all of them were stated — their general principles [together with] their finer details — at Sinai. This is what is taught in Torat Kohanim (25:1).” This question and answer are fundamental for understanding the Torah worldview, since they teach us the holistic nature of the Revelation at Mount Sinai; namely, G-d communicated to us, in both overarching principles and in specific details, exactly what is necessary to lead a life stamped in His Divine image.

Living a life according to the Torah’s “general principles and its finer details” is an endless challenge for the halachically-committed Jew. The rapid transformations produced by technological innovations have created a world wherein change in almost all matters is the rule, rather than the exception. In order to ascertain ratzon Hashem (G-d’s will), we must turn to our poskim to help us chart a course of authentic halachic living. In doing so, we must ask these basic questions: • What is the role of a posek?

• What does a posek actually do when presented with a sheilah (halachic inquiry)?

• What is the relationship that obtains be-

tween earlier authorities and the contemporary posek?

• What are the limits of the modern posek’s autonomy in his decision making process? n Sunday, July 8, 1934, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein zatzal, known by his students and followers as Rav Moshe, was 39 years old and the rabbi of Luban, Belorussia (Soviet Union), a position he had held since 1921. His intellectual acumen and prowess were recognized far and wide, and his brilliant Torah insights and decisions were already legendary.

On this particular Sunday, he penned a responsum (teshuvah) to one of his colleagues that, in part, deals with my above-stated questions (Iggrot Moshe, Yoreh Deah Section I: 101). Rav Moshe was asked: “How are we permitted to depend upon Torah novella (chidushim) like those that I [Rav Feinstein] have explained as having practical halachic application — when they are specifically in opposition to later day authorities (Acharonim)?”

His answer encapsulates his independent and unfailing spirit in pursuit of the truth: “Behold I say: ‘Has an end and limitation been made for the Torah? G-d forbid! — that

we should make halachic decisions solely based upon that which is found already in other works. That would mean that if questions were to arise that were not found in pre-existent works that we should not make a determination and give a decision to them — even when we have the ability to render such a decision.

In my humble opinion, it is prohibited to say such a thing.

“Beyond question, the Torah will continue to grow and develop now, and in our time.

[Moreover,] anyone who has the ability to determine any law that comes before him, according to the limits of his ability, is obligated to do so based upon due diligence (chakirah v’drisha haitav) in the Talmud and prior poskim.” [He must employ] clear understanding and utilize accurate proofs –— even if [he develops] a new law that was never spoken about in prior works.” (Emphasis added.) av Moshe’s answer is unequivocal: The posek is obligated to respond to any and all Torah inquiries in a manner that uses the full force of his intellectual powers — even when his intensive study and analysis of See Posek on page 21

Good character traits create a better world rAbbi Avi billet Parsha of the weeK

I

n the Torah, there are a number of times when G-d uses the word v’natati (and I will place or give) to indicate what He will give to the Bnei Yisrael. Sometimes it is good, and in the cases in our parsha that are in the Tochacha, they are not good.

In the book of Bereishit, the ultimate gift G-d promises to Avraham and descendants is “the land.” This promise is made several times.

In Egypt, G-d says I will place the chen (charm) of the Israelites in the eyes of Egypt, so they’ll pay you parting gifts. Perhaps a contemporary equivalent is that your non-Jewish

neighbors will see the good you bring to the world, and will honor your contributions. The flipside would be if they only see red through the hatred they have in their hearts toward you.

The second paragraph of Shema includes two promises of gifts: for rain and produce, and grass for your animals.

In Bechukotai the promised gifts — of Goodness — include peace; having G-d’s Mishkan, His personal resting place, in our midst; and having G-d Himself walk among us.

The curses, which come from bad behavior, disregarding the Torah, not caring about G-d, desecrating G-d’s name, will lead to “gifts” of punishment — that is, “I will turn my attention” (never a good sign) as G-d’s attention will lead to your enemies defeating you; your heavens will be like iron and your land like brass; your corpses will rot on the remains of your idols; your cities will be ruins, and your sanctuaries will be desolate.

ather than going through positive requirements of the parsha, and negative consequences, let us look at a couple of passages from the Talmud which discuss methods of goodness that we can emulate that are meant to bring good fortune.

The Talmud (Shabbos 119a) tells us how great rabbis would prepare for Shabbos, including a story of Yosef Mokir Shabei — Yosef honors Shabbos and how he became wealthy.

A wealthy non-Jew in his neighborhood was informed through astrology that he would lose his fortune to Yosef. The man sold everything he had and purchased an expensive pearl which he carried with him always, so he could protect his wealth. One day when he was passing a river, the pearl dropped from his possession and ended in the water, where it was swallowed by a fish that was subsequently caught late on a Friday. Perplexed at how they’d sell it so close

to Shabbos, everyone told the fishermen to sell it to this Yosef, who would certainly buy it in honor of Shabbos. Which he did.

The Talmud continues with examples of how the people in Israel became wealthy — through giving tithes. And in Babylonia, wealth came to those who honored the Torah. Elsewhere, people became wealthy through honoring the Sabbath.

Lesson number one: Give to the poor, honor the Torah and the Shabbos, and merit to be wealthy. And remember that wealth is not always measured in monetary terms. In last week’s parsha of Avot, we learned Ben Zoma’s teaching that wealth equals being happy with one’s portion. he second tale (Taanit 20b) is of Rav Adda bar Ahavah and the great merits that came to him on account of his deeds, which inSee Traits on page 21

Continued from page 20 clude: he never showed anger in his house, he never walked in front of someone greater than him, he never thought about Torah in places which are inappropriate, he didn’t walk a distance of four amos without studying Torah or without wearing his tefillin, he never slept in the beis medrash, he never had any delight when his fellow man stumbled (which even means if someone had to sell something to him at a loss, he didn’t even rejoice over his own gain), and he never called his friend by a nickname.

There are many other examples of wonderful qualities and character traits which are clearly smiled upon in the Talmud. Many of them reflect on seeing the humanity in others, and doing our best to make others comfortable, to preserve their dignity, to protect them and their feelings, all while honoring G-d at all times.

Our task is to bring the focus to where we can be improving our relationships with people and with G-d And to bring the focus to how we can raise up the honor of our friend — as the Mishneh in Avos says, “Let the honor of your friend be beloved unto you as your own honor” — and how we can thereby create a better world beginning with our own conduct, positively influencing others, and having those good behaviors serve as a model for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

How should the posek address laws that are explicitly found within the canon of halachic literature? How heavily should the weight of authority rest upon his shoulders? Here, too, Rav Moshe bravely advocates, and even demands, autonomy over merely “looking something up” in one of the classic works of Jewish jurisprudence: “Even in regards to a law that is already found in previous works — beyond question the decisor also must understand it and render a decision according to his own thought processes (b’da’ato) before he declares it to be the law — by no account should he render judgment simply because he has found such and such a conclusion [in prior works]. This would be as if he rendered judgment simply based upon his studies. Concerning this approach, it has been stated that the Tannaim [sages from the Mishnaic era] bring destruction upon the world when they render judgment based solely upon that which they have learned [but failed to understand: Rashi, Talmud Bavli, Sotah 22a].

How much leeway, however, does the posek actually have? Can he legitimately reject prior and heretofore accepted opinions? Rav Feinstein’s answer is clear: “Even if his [the posek’s] decision, on occasion, stands in stark opposition to some of the greatest of our recent Acharonim (gaonim merabbotainu haacharonim) — what of it? Be-

tegrity, bravery, and honesty knew no bounds in his pursuit of truth and desire to help the entire Jewish people. He stands forevermore as a paragon of what a posek can and should be. May we all be zocheh (merit) to learn from his stellar example, and live lives infused with the love of Torah, devotion to our people, and dedication to Hashem.

Concerning this idea, our sages stated explicitly in Talmud Bavli, Bava Batra 131a: “A judge can only depend upon what his own eyes see.”

Rav Moshe proceeds to clarify the posek’s degree of autonomy, and opines that he must balance his ruling according to the dictates and halachic structure that were created by the “famous decisors of the Shulchan Aruch that have been accepted in all of our countries. Regarding this it was said: ‘They established a place to create a fence of protection.’ [In doing so, one will be following in the path] of the majority of the responsa of later-day authorities who determine many new laws that are to be followed as a matter of actual halachic practice.”

In addition, Rav Feinstein suggests that the posek engaged in this singular creative process “must never be arrogant and must strive to determine the law in accordance with the prior authorities [when it is possible to do so.]”

There are situations, however, where potential human tragedy and need are so manifest that the halachic decisor is mandated to do everything in his power to rescue someone from a life of misery, Torah violations, or devastating financial loss: “When it is a matter of great need, and all the more so a situation wherein the woman would remain inextricably tied to her husband against her will [agunah] as in our case, then we are unquestionably obligated to render judgment [in opposition to prior authorities] if it appears to us that we are able to free [her]. It is prohibited for us to be from the overly humble and ‘tie up’ a daughter of Israel, or to cause one to violate various prohibitions, or even to cause the loss of Jewish money.”

Assult on rites is latest bid for Judenfrei Europe Ben Cohen Viewpoint

L

ast week, Jewish ritual observance came under attack in both Belgium and Norway. While there is nothing suggesting the respective moves against shechita in Belgium and brit milah in Norway were coordinated, both speak to an ingrained tendency in Europe to dismisses these core requirements for Jews as no more and no less than cruelty of a particularly Jewish sort.

The environment committee of the parliament in Wallonia — a French-speaking region accounting for more than half of Belgium’s territory and a third of its population — voted unanimously May 8 to ban shechita on the grounds that the practice involves cruelty to animals; the decision will take effect in September 2019. On the same day, the annual convention of Norway’s Progress Party — a libertarian, anti-immigration party that is a partner in the country’s ruling coalition — passed

a resolution urging a government ban on ritual circumcision for boys under age 16, on the grounds that what is involved here is a violation of human rights. Jews, as is well-known, circumcise their sons eight days after birth, in accordance with the biblical covenant between G-d and the patriarch Abraham.

You might make a case that anti-Semitism is a minor factor here. There are many more Muslims than there are Jews in Belgium, Norway and pretty much every other country in Western Europe — and they, too, circumcise their sons for religious reasons and consume ritually slaughtered halal meat. That certainly explains why right-wing populists like the National Front in France and the United Kingdom Independence Party have made halal slaughter a primary focus of their broader campaign against what they see as social acceptance of Islamic sharia law-based rites.

What this interpretation ignores, however, is that the problem of encroaching Islamism within European-Muslim communities is a relatively recent one. I would argue it first became distinctly visible in 1989, when the Iranian regime issued a fatwa for the killing of the British author Salman Rushdie over his novel satirizing the Quran, “The Satanic Verses.” By contrast, for more than a century, anti-Semites have demonized Jewish rites with the same enthusiasm as their Church forebears. ne of the first acts of the Nazis after they came to power in Germany in 1933 was to ban shechita. The famous Nazi propaganda film “Der Ewige Jude” (“The Eternal Jew”) portrayed shechita as a gruesome Jewish celebration of animal suffering.

tism—in much the same way, and for the same reasons, that anti-Zionists present the cause of eliminating Israel as a legitimate human rights campaign. It is, of course, tiresome for them to have to deal with the charge of anti-Semitism every time they take aim at Jews as a collective, so they flip the equation by depicting themselves as victims of a malicious reputational smear.

The sad thing is, this approach often works.

It feeds into the sentiments of those segments of the European public who regard anti-Semitism as a censorship tool — preventing them from protecting animals, babies, national reputations unfairly soiled during World War II and the right to condemn Israel for alleged human rights abuses.

To their great credit, Europe’s often-cautious Jewish leaders have rarely failed to condemn the anti-ritual campaign in the strongest of terms.

Back in 2012, when 600 German doctors signed a letter to a prominent newspaper advocating a ban on circumcision, Charlotte Knobloch, then leader of the German-Jewish community, wondered aloud “whether this country still wants us.” When the Wallonia committee announced its ban on shechita last week, Moshe Kantor, See Europe on page 23

Comey firing was no ‘Saturday Night Massacre’ Jeff Dunetz politics to go

hen President Trump fired FBI director James Comey last week it was one of the most ineptly handled major announcement by a president in recent history. The way the firing was announced was nothing short of a train wreck.

Almost as soon as it was announced that President Trump had fired the FBI director, the Democrats screamed that his action was Nixonian or reminiscent of Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre,” which is a ridiculous comparison.

The “Saturday Night Massacre” refers to Oct. 20, 1973, when President Nixon ordered the firing of Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox. Attorney General Elliot Richardson resigned rather than fire Cox. The responsibility then fell to Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus, who followed Richardson’s lead and also resigned. Finally, Solicitor General Robert Bork, who unlike the first two did not assure Congress that he would never interfere with Cox, followed the order and fired Cox. Those who are familiar with both the Nixon and the Trump actions know that the two firings

were not even close to being alike. Here are six reasons the firing of Comey is different from the “Saturday Night Massacre.”

1) Good Job vs. Bad Job: In 1973, most observers in both parties thought that Cox was doing a good job. In fact, one of the reasons Richardson resigned was that he promised Congress that he wouldn’t use his authority to can the Watergate special prosecutor, except for cause. On the other hand, most of the Democrats complaining about the Comey firing believed he was doing a lousy job — until President Trump’s action gave them a political opening to attack the POTUS. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein created a compelling letter backing up the Trump decision. Not only did he point out why Comey was doing a lousy job and how he broke established Justice Department procedures, but his opinion was corroborated by Jamie Gorelick, deputy attorney general under President Clinton; Larry Thompson, deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush; Michael Mukasey and Alberto Gonzales, who each served as an attorney general under President George W Bush; and Eric Holder, who was deputy attorney general under President Clinton and attorney general under President Obama.

2) Subpoena: Nixon fired Cox in an attempt to avoid a subpoena demanding a copy of the infamous Nixon White House tapes. While there are reports that Mike Flynn has received a subpoena

to testify, Trump hasn’t received a subpoena to turn over anything, 3) Evidence: Even without the White House tapes and before the “Saturday Night Massacre” we knew some facts, either thanks to Woodward and Bernstein or testimony to the Senate Watergate Committee. That evidence included: •According to the FBI, the Watergate breakin stemmed from a massive campaign of political spying and sabotage conducted on behalf of the Nixon reelection effort.

•Former Nixon aides G. Gordon Liddy and James W. McCord Jr. were convicted of conspiracy, burglary and wiretapping in the Watergate incident.

•John Dean testified that he discussed the Watergate cover-up with President Nixon at least 35 times.

As of this writing there is no public evidence that President Trump or anyone in his campaign colluded with the Russians to hack into the Hillary campaign or the DNC. Both Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley and California Democrat Diane Feinstein, the senior members of the Senate Judicial Committee, said that President Trump was not being investigated.

4) The Department of Justice objected to the firing of Archibald Cox, but the DOJ helped provide the rationale for the Comey firing: Cox was fired despite the fact that the attorney general and his deputy resigned rather than

carry out Nixon’s order. Comey was fired with the approval of his immediate supervisor and of the attorney general.

5) Timing: Nixon fired Cox the day after the special prosecutor refused a compromise on his insistence that Nixon surrender his tapes.

6) Involvement: Archibald Cox was the Watergate prosecutor — in other words his only job was to investigate the Watergate Scandal. As director of the FBI, Comey’s plate was filled with hundreds of projects of which the Russian investigation was just one. With the Hillary investigation. Comey delegated the investigation to senior people on his staff and over 100 agents; the Russia Investigation was probably being run the same way.

The claim that the firing of Comey is reminiscent of the “Saturday Night Massacre” is pure hyperbole. Even worse is that, on Sunday, Senator Chuck Schumer, the minority leader, said that a new FBI director wouldn’t be considered unless a special prosecutor was appointed to join the House, Senate and FBI in investigating if there was any connection between Team Trump and the Russians.

At this point the only thing a special prosecutor would do is slow down the investigation and any congressional action on the Trump economic agenda. This proves once again that Schumer’s priority is his party, rather than the country or the people of New York State.

murderer! By the time of the newspaper’s mea culpa a day after the column was published, the damage had been already been done. Too little too late. ut the question remains. How could such a flagrant error slip by an editor’s desk? This is not a matter of dotting i’s and crossing t’s. It’s murder, cold-blooded murder.

Has moral equivalency crossed the Rubicon, with the shedding of blood now disguised in self-righteous hunger strikes, with the stamp of approval of the New York Times?

This week, “selfless and devoted” Bargouhti was caught on camera sneaking cookies in his bathroom cell. The man is a wanton murderer, so no additional evidence is needed to crush his humanity or character, but it seems that being a phony is another feature of his personality. I love my cookies as much as the next person, but I think Barghouti may have just stolen Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster’s namesake.

Jokes about his hypocrisy are flying. “They should name those biscuits Bar-Goodies.” Or, “I guess those Israeli biscuits were BDS approved.” Etc. Let’s put all kidding aside, though, because this is no laughing matter, and keep a few simple facts in mind: We are talking about Palestinian prisoners convicted of murder.

Terrorists, some of whom practically wiped out entire families.

They are treated within the strictures of international law. This means that in Israeli prisons they receive health benefits, legal counsel, humane treatment, visits from their families, the freedom to practice their religion, and education (Barghouti received his PhD while in Israeli prison).

The additional privileges these convicted murderers now want include more TV time, privacy when making phone calls, longer visits with family, and more academic opportunities.

Personally, I don’t believe in rewarding murderers. Do you?

So spare me the New York Times’ apologia for hunger strikes.

The newspaper is not the culprit, but the messenger. But maybe messengers who reward murder deserve readers who would go on strike against it.

few weeks back, as I was reading an op-ed in the New York Times, my temperature began to rise. Here is the opening sentence: “Having spent the last 15 years in an Israeli prison, I have been both a witness to and a victim to Israel’s illegal system of mass arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners. After exhausting all other options, I decided there was no choice but to resist these abuses by going on a hunger strike.”

Who is this civil disobedient excoriating Israel with false information? When my eyes rested on the name of the author — Marwan Barghouti — I blinked.

Marwan Barghouti? The mass killer convicted on five counts of cold-blooded murder? Now he’s a legitimate voice and point of view on the op-ed pages of the New York Times!

What has this world come to … again. Another terrorist, a convicted murderer, voicing his view — met with no moral outcry whatsoever.

Well, there was outcry, but it came from the pro-Israel camp. Forget about Israel and morals, this needed to be called out for sloppy journalism — presenting a mass murderer as a civil disobedient with a calling, with no context provided.

The next day, the following editor’s note appeared as an addendum to the author’s name: “This article explained the writer’s prison sentence but neglected to provide sufficient context by stating the offenses of which he was convicted. They were five counts of murder and membership in a terrorist organization. Mr. Barghouti declined to offer a defense at his trial and refused to recognize the Israeli court’s jurisdiction and legitimacy.”

The Times’ failure to disclose this originally was egregious (instead, the Times dignified him as a “parliamentarian”).

For 2,000 years in the diaspora, Jewish identity was preserved by adherence to these religious commands. This, in turn, bred the resentment of supersessionist Church theologians and, later on, universalist Enlightenment philosophers — both despised Jewish separateness even as their rulers enforced it through ghettoization and other discriminatory measures. From Martin Luther to Karl Marx, the imperative of ending the conditions for a separate Jewish existence — through means varying from outright persecution or conditional emancipation — has been a binding thread in European thought.

It follows logically that even in a modern democracy, a ban on the core rituals making Jews Jewish — and Muslims Muslim — effectively ends the conditions for a separate existence as a Jewish community. It’s true that many Jews don’t keep kosher, but virtually all Jewish males are circumcised, regardless of their family’s degree of religious observance. Ending the right to engage in those practices poses a choice: stay if you are willing to obey the law, leave if you are not.

Norway and Belgium are not the only countries where political battles over Jewish rites have erupted. Shechita is outlawed in Poland, New Zealand and Switzerland, among others, while nasty public campaigns against circumcision have been seen in San Francisco on one half of the globe, and Oslo on the other. The campaign advances in fits and starts, but it is always there, and is present among liberals and nationalists alike.

American Jews are fortunate to live with a constitution clearly demarcating religion and state. European Jews don’t have such clear guidelines, and therefore become hostages to the fortune of political clashes in which their freedom of worship is just one consideration among many.

Rent compromise saves Lawrence batting cage

By Jeffrey Bessen Herald Community Newspapers After 18 months of worrying about the possible closure of his nearly 40-year-old business, Marty Rosen has reached a compromise with the state Department of Transportation to keep open the Five Towns Mini-Golf and Batting Range, along Rockaway Turnpike in Lawrence.

In December 2015, Marty, who runs the seasonal business with his son Matt, was informed

by DOT that his monthly rent of $4,750 was being increased to $12,435, a 160 percent jump, to reflect the latest DOT appraisal of the land’s value. Now, DOT officials have agreed to in-

crease the rent only 35 percent, to $6,412.50.

“This effectively means we’re still in business and we can provide good, clean family entertainment for the community as we have always brought to the community,” Marty said.

“We hope to do so for many more years.”

In addition to the batting range —baseball and softball — and the mini-golf, there is a paintball shooting range and an arcade. There are vending machines for ice cream, beverages and candy. The concession stand sells hot dogs, pretzels and churros. There is also a door that highlights the major league ballplayers who have visited. Seven were on the 1986 championship team, including World Series Most Valuable Player Ray Knight.

Incensed that the DOT would dramatically raise their rent, the Rosens contacted local elected officials and created an online petition.

As of press time on Tuesday, there were 2,667 online supporters, with many writing how much the batting range means to them. The business is located on state-owned land and op-

erates on a 30-day licensing agreement.

State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, a Democrat who represents the Five Towns, was one of four elected officials who supported the Rosens, and backed their belief that DOT was overvaluing the property and the rent increase would most likely put them out of business.

“Small businesses are the heart of our local economies,” Kaminsky said. “I was glad to help facilitate this compromise so that the Five Towns Mini-Golf and Batting Range can continue to serve the community.”

Jim Vilardi, a Hewlett resident, and a property appraiser, conducted the research that helped reach what Marty called an “amicable agreement.” Vilardi noted how difficult it is to run a small business and said he is “thrilled” with the outcome.

“I think it’s a great result,” Vilardi said. “I hope that this will illustrate to a lot of local businesses how we could be helpful.” He referred to the “team” of elected officials that included Kaminsky, Howard Beach Assemblywoman Sta-

cey Pheffer Amato, County Legislator Howard Kopel, former Far Rockaway Assemblymember Phil Goldfeder, who helped support the Rosens.

“Every business faces challenges and hurdles,” Vilardi said, “all local businesses should reach out to people to find some help so they can prosper, is my takeaway from this.”

While waiting for the DOT decision, the Rosens opened the mini-golf course and batting range in March as they have done since 1978.

Despite a rainy April and a cooler than usual May, Marty was upbeat.

“It was a long and an arduous process,” he said, “special thanks to all our valued customers who took the time to sign our petition and left moving and supportive comments.”

After the Rosens posted an announcement of the agreement on Facebook, fans of the business also commented. “Truly great news,” wrote Woodmere resident Felice Balsam. “So glad they will be able to continue serving the community they have been an integral part of for so very long!”

He was a member of a generation of pioneers in Jewish education that operated after World War II and reshaped and revitalized Orthodox Jewry in the United States.

Driven by faith in the past and a vision for the future, reviled and ridiculed by the then Jewish establishment and Federations, these Torah scholars established Jewish day schools with scant financial backing. Going against the tuition free schooling offered from a then excellent public school educational system, this cadre of dedicated young men founded schools in then unlikely places, schools that changed the face of American Jewry until today.

A leading figure in that revolution in American Jewish life was Rabbi Binyamin Kamenetzky. He headed a school in Nassau County, the Yeshiva of the South Shore. Today this area has a very strong and large Orthodox community. But many decades ago Nassau County was alien territory – perhaps even enemy territory – as far as meaningful Jewish education was concerned.

Many Jewish leaders of the time called the Day School movement un-American! And in that area and environment, Rabbi Binyamin Kamenetzky, over many decades of toil and talent, built an empire of Jewish education and Torah observance.

But perhaps just as importantly, Rabbi Ka-

menetzky was a force for good in all areas of Jewish life in the Five Towns area of Nassau County. Every individual and every Jewish institution could rely on his counsel, influence, and personal and political

connections for help in times of need and crisis.

His vision was wider than just his school and its needs. In a world that sometimes defined itself by turf and exclusivity, he saw beyond narrow parochial borders and envisaged the Jewish community as a whole. The Five Towns and Far Rockaway areas of greater New York today contain many and varied institutions of Jewish learning. But that is only because of the pioneering labor of that generation after the war that undertook the daunting task of rebuilding the Jewish world after its near destruction seventy years ago.

It was a generation of unsung and unknown heroes and Rabbi Binyamin Kamenetzky was representative of those brave visionaries and

dedicated educators. Because the Lord gifted him with a long life span in practical terms, he outlived his generation and never really received his due. He was a symbol of past greatness but his very presence amongst us still had influence and lessons to learn.

This scion of a great rabbinic family, born in the heartland of Jewish life in prewar Lithuania, succeeded in America, undaunted by its strangeness and completely different culture. This ability was a hallmark of his public and private persona. They don’t make them this way any longer.

He was a very creative person. He founded a lunch and learn program in Manhattan long before that type of program became regular and normal in American Jewish life. I spoke for his group a number of times many decades ago and I always marveled as to his ability to bring together so many disparate Jews of various backgrounds for an hour of Torah study in the midst of a busy business day.

Lunch and Learn programs now exist everywhere in the Jewish world today and are important in the never-ending battle to keep Jews Jewish. My first experience with this type of program was when Rabbi Binyamin Kamenetzky invited me to speak. It was an experience I have never forgotten and I still cherish.

Aside from the thousands of young people who received their Jewish education through his school there are many others, young and old, that have benefited from his initiatives, programs and personal guidance and interest.

Rabbi Binyamin Kamenetzky was a throwback to a world that once was and will never be again, he saw a world that would rebuild Jew-

ish life and reward all of those that kept faith with Torah and observance. A unique personality whose lifespan covered a radically and rapidly changing society, his perspective and counsel will be sorely missed. May his memory be a blessing to his family and all who were privileged to know him.

I am grateful that you were able to include my brief essay about Rav Kamenetzky’s involvement in the 1943 march by 400 rabbis to the White House, and his address to the Wyman Institute’s conference in 2007.

It should be noted that it was The Jewish Star’s own longtime columnist, Alan Jay Gerber, who first brought Rav Kamenetzky’s role to our attention and facilitated the rav’s involvement in the Wyman Institute’s campaigns for public recognition of the march.

Like the other rebbeim who took part in the march, Rav Kamenetzky was much too humble to ever boast about his participation.

It took some real sleuthing by Alan to uncover that important information. The Jewish community, and the historical record, are better off thanks to Alan’s efforts, in this regard and many others.

Terror victim’s parents sue to recover damages

By JTA The parents of an American-born yeshiva student who was shot to death in 1996 at a West Bank bus stop have sued to recover the $156 million in damages they were awarded by a U.S. jury in a landmark verdict.

Stanley and Joyce Boim filed a federal lawsuit in Chicago against two U.S. Palestinian groups based in the city — American Muslims for Palestine and Americans for Justice in Palestine Educational Foundation — who they claim are the “alter egos” of three Islamic fundraising groups that were found guilty in December 2004 of funding the terrorism that led to the death of their 17-yearold son, David, near the city of Beit El. One of the Boims’ lawyers, Stephen Landes, said that the family has received only a small piece of the award because the defendants claimed they had ceased operations and did not have the money to pay the judgment. Landed said the groups named in the suit formed shortly afterward, with many of the same leaders.

“The Anti-Terrorism Act can’t be set aside simply by rebranding yourself,” he told Reuters.

When Hitler was a popular Jewish name on the streets of New York

The publisher of the New York Times sent a personal letter to subscribers who canceled over the newspaper’s hiring of conservative columnist Bret Stephens.

Arthur Sulzberger Jr. sent the email to subscribers who specifically mentioned Stephens as their reason for canceling their subscription, Politico reported, after obtaining a copy.

Stephens, who is Jewish, came to the Times after serving as the foreign affairs columnist for the Wall Street Journal. Prior to that, at 28 he became editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post in 2002. He is a Pulitzer Prize laureate and an assertive defender of Israel and its current government’s policies.

Stephens is also a fierce critic of President Donald Trump.

Stephens has come under left-wing fire for questioning the theory of climate change and its dangers, as well as for calling antiSemitism the “disease of the Arab mind” and “the short answer for why the Arab world is sliding into the abyss.”

Sulzberger said in his letter to subscribers that the newsroom functions separately from the opinion department where Stephens works and that his columns will not inform the newsroom. He also listed several of the Times articles about climate change and a recent issue of the Sunday magazine dedicated to the climate’s future, according to Politico.

Syria’s ‘Nazi attrocities’

Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman of Ukraine met with Israeli officials, including his counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, after an earlier visit was canceled over Ukraine’s support of a United Nations resolution condemning settlements.

Groysman, his nation’s first Jewish prime minister, met Monday with Netanyahu in Jerusalem. They are the only Jewish prime ministers in the world.

“This is a moment of great friendship because there is a common history that binds Ukraine and Israel,” Netanyahu said, according to his office. “Some of it is laced with tragedy, but it is also laced with hope and with sympathy.”

In December, Netanyahu canceled the Groysman visit after Ukraine was one of 14 countries to vote in favor of a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel for continuing to build in West Bank settlements. The United States abstained in the vote, sparking controversy.

The party of France’s president-elect, Emmanuel Macron, withdrew from its parliamentary elections ticket a politician who made statements deemed anti-Semitic.

Christian Gerin, a journalist, was taken off the En Marche ticket on Friday, a day after he was nominated to represent the party in next month’s elections for the French parliament, in connection with messages he wrote in 2013, throughout last year and this year on Twitter.

In one tweet, flagged as “anti-Semitic” by the LICRA watchdog against anti-Semitism and racism, he wrote: “When will there be a separation between CRIF and state?”

The head of the Anti-Defamation League drew parallels between Syria’s alleged use of a crematorium to dispose of bodies to actions committed by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

Jonathan Greenblatt, the group’s national director, also called on the international community, including Russia, to take action to stop the violence perpetuated by the Syrian government under the leadership of President Bashar Assad.

“As Jews, we are particularly shocked by the extreme brutality of the Syrian regime, which invokes the worst nightmares of Nazi atrocities against the Jewish people,” Greenblatt said Tuesday. “The world learned from the twentieth century that it did not do enough to stop the crimes of the Nazis which led to the genocide of six million Jews.

“The nations of the world — including first and foremost Russia, which continues to aid and abet Assad’s brutality — must act to put an end to the inhumane actions of the Syrian government.”

That is the start of an improbable JTA article from June 1933, entitled “Kiss the Mezuzah — and meet the Brownsville Hitlers.” It is a snapshot of a time when Hitler was a recognizable, if increasingly ironic, Jewish surname in New York City.

According to Rose Hitler, more than 30 families across the city bore the last name of the man who became the chancellor of Germany that year and one of history’s worst monsters.

The JTA article got a few things wrong: Rose’s family actually spelled their last name “Hittler,” and her husband’s name was Frank, not Fred, according to their marriage records.

But the article was accurate about the increasing discomfort of New Yorkers named Hitler or Hittler. Living in what was a very Jewish neighborhood at the time, Frank and Rose’s kids began having trouble at school. Herbert, age 9, constantly got into fistfights. Friends of fouryear-old Rita called her a Nazi.

Rita, a vivacious girl, finds her big brown eyes filling with tears whenever her playmates tease her and call her a Nazi. “I ain’t a Nazzy,” says Rita. “I’m Jewish.”

Her friends reply in chorus: “Rita’s a Nazzy, Rita’s a Nazzy!”

Rose admitted she was surprised by the whole ordeal.

“My father-in-law, may he rest in peace, used to say when he was living that he never heard of a Hitler who wasn’t Jewish,” she said.

“Take my brother-in-law, Louis Hitler, who lives on Pulaski Street. Take all the other Hitlers in New York.”

Italian and Israeli cyclists are paying tribute this week to Gino Bartali, an Italian cycling champion who saved hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust and in 2013 was recognized as a Righteous Among the Nations.

Bartali, who died in 2000, smuggled in his bicycle frame Resistance messages and false documents for Jews when riding through central Italy, supposedly as part of his training schedule.

On Tuesday, members of the Israel Cycling Academy, Israeli’s first professional cycling team, for the second consecutive year retraced one of Bartali’s routes —nearly 120 miles, from Florence to Assisi. The previous day they joined city officials and Jewish representatives at a commemorative ceremony in Florence.

Gulf states and Israel Arab Gulf states reportedly have offered to begin normalizing relations with Israel if Israel makes gestures toward peace with the Palestinians.

The offer reported Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal comes as President Trump readies for a visit to the region. The newspaper cited several unnamed people said to be briefed on the discussion.

According to the report, the Arab states offered such normalization steps as establishing direct telecommunications links with Israel, allowing overflight rights to Israeli aircraft and lifting restrictions on some trade.

In exchange, the Arab states expect Israeli to make a grand gesture toward restarting the peace process, such as stopping construction in areas of Judea and Samaria or opening the border with Gaza to more products.

Free long-chained woman A rabbinical court in Paris officially dissolved the marriage of a Jewish woman who for 29 years had tried unsuccessfully to obtain a religious Jewish divorce from her abusive ex-husband.

The move Tuesday by the rabbinical court of Paris at the seat of the Consistoire religious group was hailed as a success in the fight for women’s rights by French Chief Rabbi Haim Korsia, according to the French-language edition of the news website Times of Israel.

The couple received a civil divorce in 1988.

Outside Israel, rabbinical courts have punished recalcitrant husbands by shaming them publicly and ostracizing them with a herem — banishment forbidding other Jews from socializing with the writ’s subject.

The woman’s husband ignored such rulings, prompting Rabbi Korsia to facilitate the filing of a lawsuit against the husband in civil court for “causing damage” to his wife, The Times of Israel reported. The civil court ruled in favor of the woman in 2015, imposing penalties exceeding $60,000.

The husband, who in 1988 was sentenced by a criminal tribunal to nine years in prison for attempting to murder his wife, finally agreed to grant his wife a get to avoid incurring additional penalties, The Times of Israel reported. The woman and her lawyer, Dan Griguer, celebrated her release by raising a toast at the Consistoire’s offices.
