On Sunday, the Young Island of Woodmere will showcase a color that was largely forgotten but now represents a living mitzvah. Sunday’s yom iyun (day of study) marks a quarter century since the renewal of tekhelet, Judaism’s legendary blue dye. The Talmud deďŹ nes the tekhelet dye as derived from the “bloodâ€? of a rare amphibious snail know as the chilazon. The mitzvah to wear a thread of that dye on one’s tallit is mentioned multiple times in the Torah, but the tekhelet supply disappeared after Muslims conqured the land of Israel in 638 CE. How a new source for tekhelet was discovered will be discussed at Sunday’s event, from 9 am to 2 pm. How the color is made will be demonstrated at 11:15 am, and tekhelet products will be available for purchase. The program is free and open to the public. Featured speakers are Drs. Baruch Sterman and Ari Greenspan of P’til Tekhelet, and Rabbis Hershel Billet, Ben Zion Halberstam, Aryeh Lebowitz, Hershel Schachter, Dr. Meir Soloveichik, Michael Taubes, and Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb. “Tekhelet is a quintessential example of science and Torah working hand in hand,â€? Sterman said.

The Jewish Star The parents of IDF Sgt. Ari Weiss bridged the mourning of Yom Ha’Zikaron and the joy of Yom Ha’Atzmaut last week as they spoke to a hushed crowd at a Five Towns commemoration of both days. During the Yom Ha’Zikaron portion of the program at the Young Insrael of Woodmere on Wednesday night, Susie Weiss described a mother’s pain over the loss of her son Ari Weiss, a member of an elite ďŹ ghting unit in the IDF’s Nachal Brigade who was killed in a battle at Hamas headquarters in Shechem in 2002. Her husband, Rabbi Stewart Weiss, spoke a few minutes later, during Yom Ha’Atzmaut. “On Yom Ha’Zikaron, we are allowed to mourn and grieve openly,â€? Susie Weiss said. “After this, we crawl back into our grief and pretend that life goes on.â€? “When we think of Ari, that’s when we’re slapped in the face with the reality of living in a Continued on page 23

The Jewish Star Hatzalah responds quickly to the scene of medical emergencies, but if the responders can’t ďŹ nd your house they may end up circling your block while a member of your household dies. That’s the message driven home Sunday night by Rabbi Elozer Kanner, coordinator of Hatzalah of the Rockaways and Nassau County, who told 1,500 Hatzalah supporters that “as you pull into your driveway tonight, look at your address numbers — if you have any — and their illumination — if you have.

“When young chevras see someone of that nature, a person of stature, no matter how old they are, running on calls, it’s an incredible chizuk for the organization, Rabbi Bender said. “When the kitanim follow the gedolim, and the gedolim are special, then we have a great organization. “You can’t understand the feeling we have that we saved a life, said Rabbi Lerer, who lived and served for many years in Belle Harbor and is now in Far Rockaway. He described a call that came some years Continued on page 23
