Kids’ fun on Sunday at Kulanu Fair in C’hurst Park

By Jeffrey Bessen, Hearld Community News Visit the cotton candy station to find the action at Kulanu’s annual fair this Sunday afternoon in Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park, said Bob Block, who was recently hired to do corporate fundraising and community outreach for the agency.

“You will see the kids smiling from ear to ear,” Block said, as he and Kulanu Executive Director Beth Raskin hosted a reporter in the agency’s Cedarhurst office on June 1.

Block used that image to bring Kulanu’s mission to life. For the past 17 years, it has helped special-needs boys and girls and young adults navigate their way from childhood to maturity. In addition, Kulanu, Hebrew for “all of us,” also has programs for parents, guardians and special-needs adults.

Up to 200 special-needs people are involved in Kulanu programs, assisted by 150 full-time faculty members and up to 70 volunteers. There are 10- and 12-month educational programs and four primary divisions.

Drawing from “all over the map,” Raskin said, clients come from within a 50-mile radius of Cedarhurst, which includes the Five Towns, the South Shore of Long Island and across New York City. Though its name is Hebrew, Kulanu’s clients are not all Jewish, she said.

“This is a heavy responsibility to be part of someone’s life,” Raskin said. “But we have a full and robust team to look after these children and adults to help them grow and have fun.”

To help Kulanu grow and improve its programs, Raskin said the agency hired Block “to keep Bob’s skills in the community.” For six years, he was the executive director of

Kulanu Academy’s educational division

provides middle and senior high school students with what Kulanu officials say is an individualized and innovative learning experience.

The Keren Eliana Parent Advocacy and Resource Center helps families with advocacy, clinical referrals, service coordination and a personalized plan to aid in navigating the complex web of social services. The resource center also holds parent-training seminars every three months.

A Social Services Division provides recreational activities for children of all ages,

seven days a week. Caregivers also can take breaks through the vacation respite programs.

Vocational and life skills training are available through the Vocational and Adult Services Division to those people aiming to use their abilities to enhance employment and personal goals.

“We want them to secure a job on their own and be a viable member of society — not relying on the system for existence,” Block said.

Kulanu, which is certified by the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, relies on fundraising such as the fair, an annual dinner and private donations. Raskin credited Rachel Berg with coordinating the events.

Raskin added that obtaining corporate support is “critical” to Kulanu’s mission to help their clients reach their potential and be a functioning member of society.

Originally established in 1978 as the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities coordinates services for more than 128,000 New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders and other neurological impairments.

“Kulanu’s programs provide people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with vital community connections that empower people to live fulfilling, rewarding lives and strengthen communities,” said Scott Sandman, a spokesman for the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities.

Sunday’s community fair — open to everyone — runs from 12:30 to 5:30 pm.

Israel’s rapid growth drives a transit revolution

By Adam Abrams, JNS.org Rapid growth in Israel’s population and economy during the past two decades has prompted the Israeli government to revolutionize the country’s infrastructure and transportation systems to accommodate a flourishing citizenry.

The average annual growth rate of Israel’s population from 1990-2017 has been approximately 2.25 percent. This is “among the highest rate of population growth in the Western world,” Prof. Yoram Shiftan, head of transportation research at the Haifa-based TechnionIsrael Institute of Technology, told JNS.org.

During the same period, Israel’s GDP, the key indicator of a nation’s economic growth, averaged a 4.9-percent annual increase.

These figures are used by Israel’s Ministry of Transportation to project the future transport and infrastructure needs of the Jewish state—decades down the road—and to modify the country’s infrastructure accordingly.

Israel’s above-average economic and demographic advancements are directly reflected by parallel growth in the country’s transport activity, including in the number of vehicles on roads, cargo passing through seaports, passengers traveling through Ben Gurion International Airport and commuters using the railway system.

Due to this growth, the development of Israel’s transport infrastructure became a top

government priority during the past decade, and the state’s budget for infrastructure development is gradually increasing.

According to a spokesperson from the Transportation Ministry who asked not to be named, Israel’s budget forecasts for the fiveyear period from 2020-2025 are projected to be significantly higher than the budget for 2015-2020, largely due to a government commitment to heavily invest in the expansion of mass transit systems via land, water and air.

At the same time, Israel’s prioritization of transport infrastructure development “is a relatively new trend,” said Technion’s Shiftan, explaining that 15 years ago, “significantly less government funding was allocated…and this created an enormous gap in the public transport infrastructure.”

Land transport In the 1990s and 2000s, significant government investment was applied to upgrading and widening Israel’s highway network. But in recent years, the Transportation Ministry has started prioritizing the development of the national rail system and mass transit systems in urban areas, while also emphasizing the development of new rail connections in Israel’s peripheral regions.

In 2010, Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz presented the government with the detailed “Netivei Israel” plan, which aims to establish an inter-city transport network from

Israel’s northern Galilee to its southern Negev.

Some of the program’s projects are under construction, and others are already operational.

According to the government spokesperson, “Northern cities such as Beit She’an, Afula, Carmiel, Nahariya, Acco and Haifa, and southern cities such as Be’er Sheva, Ofakim, Netivot, Sderot, Ashkelon, Ashdod” will all be connected with the central regions of the country through the national rail network.

When the new train lines are completed, “people who live in places like Ofakim will be able to easily commute to work in Tel Aviv,” said Rick Krosnick, chief development officer for the Jewish National Fund, which works closely with the Israeli government to spur economic development in the peripheral regions of the country.

As a result of the new connectivity, “we will see in the next five years high-tech workers in [urban] Haifa who want to live in an area like [rural/peripheral] Beit She’an,” Krosnick said.

One highly anticipated railway project is a high-speed line connecting Jerusalem to Tel Aviv in a trip of less than 30 minutes when it opens in 2018.

In recent years, Israel also began the development of urban mass transit systems, the first of which was Jerusalem’s light rail line. Now, Israel plans to establish mass transit systems and networks in all urban areas. The first line of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area’s light rail

system is under construction. The Tel Aviv line and other urban rails are slated for completion between 2020 and 2023.

“Israel must accelerate the implementation of these plans in addition to implementing various policies to reduce single occupancy car travel and encourage public transportation usage, car sharing, cycling and walking,” Shiftan said.

Maritime development Israel’s primary maritime infrastructure includes main ports in Haifa and Ashdod, and a small privatized port in Eilat. By 2021, “We will see the operation of two new seaports, both in Ashdod and Haifa, alongside the existing ports … this will certainly be an enormous change in terms of the level of capacity and efficiency,” the Transportation Ministry spokesperson said.

It is also anticipated the existing government-owned ports in Ashdod and Haifa will be privatized, with the goal of encouraging competition and creating efficiency.

Airports Twelve miles from Israel’s southern city of Eilat, the country’s first “green field” airport is set for completion later this year.

Ben Gurion International Airport has seen significant investment applied to improving its infrastructure to accommodate increased air traffic to Israel, a trend spurred by the recently implemented “Open Skies” agreement between Israel and the European Union. In recent years, Ben Gurion has received upgraded runways, a new control tower and a new security system.

There are also future plans to develop a new airport “in the north of the country” through private sector investment, according to the transportation spokesman.

Future trends Additional transportation projects in Israel include a light rail system connecting Haifa and Nazareth, two additional rail lines in Jerusalem, two additional fast lanes for Tel Aviv’s highways, a new 39-mile double track eastern railway running parallel to the cross-Israel highway (Highway 6) and a national plan for smart mobility.

“Israel, as a major start-up nation,” said Shiftan, “is one of the major contributors to driverless automated car technology. … We expect to see driverless cars on our street in the future. … Israel must prepare appropriate policies and infrastructure for this era.”

U.S. may quit rights council

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Nikki Haley, the American ambassador to the United Nations, said the U.S. is considering its membership in the U.N. Human Rights Council, citing among other things its bias against Israel.

In a speech Tuesday to the council in Geneva, Haley cited Israel as one of several factors leading the United States to reconsider its membership. Another is the membership of human rights abusers like Venezuela, Cuba, China, Burundi and Saudi Arabia.

“It’s hard to accept that this council has never considered a resolution on Venezuela and yet it adopted five biased resolutions in March against a single country – Israel,” Haley said. “It is essential that this council address its chronic anti-Israel bias if it is to have any credibility.”

Haley added: “The United States is looking very carefully at this council and our participation in it. We see some areas for significant strengthening.”

Haley is scheduled to visit Israel later this week.

How Hank Greenberg tackled Hitler in 1938

By Elaine Durbach, NJ Jewish News via JTA With a lifetime of loving and writing about sports, Ron Kaplan has many topics he can sink his teeth into. Add to that passion his time working for the American Jewish Congress and then for nearly a decade for the New Jersey Jewish News, and you can see why his publisher saw him as the perfect guy to tackle the subject of his new book.

“Hank Greenberg in 1938: Hatred and Home Runs in the Shadow of War” (Sports Publishing, 2017) is about the Jewish Hall of Famer as he was trying to make baseball history at the same time that prejudice against Jews was reaching a murderous boiling point in Europe.

But Kaplan faced a challenge: There were already at least 10 books about the Detroit Tigers slugger, as well as Aviva Kemper’s awardwinning documentary, “The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg.” None, however, had brought together the unique combination of factors that made 1938 a turning point in baseball and world history.

Kaplan spoke to those who knew Greenberg, including the celebrated sportswriter Ira Berkow, who had worked with the player on his memoir. Folks at the Baseball Hall of Fame helped with research, and Kaplan mined newspapers from the period.

They opened a window into a time when new cars sold for $600 and refrigerators for $200, a star like Greenberg earned $30,000, and awareness of the conflict brewing in Europe mushroomed. In the course of 1938, Kaplan said, reports on the growing Nazi threat went from small paragraphs to front-page stories with huge headlines, while the United States remained reluctant to accept Jewish refugees trying to flee Nazi oppression.

As Kaplan — an award-winning journalist and blogger — wrote, “Hammerin’ Hank” was coming off a stellar season with the Tigers, during which he hit 40 homers and drove in 184 runs. But as he was “on course for Babe Ruth’s home run record, Hitler’s ‘Final Solution’ was beginning to take shape.” Jews across the United States, worried about looming threats overseas, “looked to Greenberg as a symbol of hope,” Kaplan wrote.

“Though normally hesitant to speak about the anti-Semitism he dealt with, the slugger still knew the role he was playing for so many of his people, saying, ‘I came to feel that if I, as a Jew, hit a home run, I was hitting one against Hitler.’”

In the present climate, with arguments roiling about Syrian refugees, the debate over President Donald Trump’s use of the “America First” slogan popularized by the isolationist and anti-Semitic Charles Lindbergh, and reports of increasing anti-Semitism, “unfortunately, some of the issues from 1938 are still with us,” Kaplan said.

Delving deep into Greenberg’s life, talking to those who knew him and reading everything available, Kaplan affirmed his highest expectation.

“He was always a mensch,” the author said.

That quality was called into play in ’38 as the tall, powerfully built Greenberg— one of the few Jews in the game, playing in one of the most anti-Semitic cities in the country — tried to break Ruth’s home run record. While crowds loved him and much of the country cheered him on, some didn’t want to see a Jew claim the crown from the mighty Babe. Kaplan said the belief was that some pitchers deliberately walked Greenberg to prevent his reaching the goal.

Greenberg would finish with 58 homers, three shy of Ruth’s record.

“But Greenberg refused to ever use antiSemitism as an excuse,” said Kaplan, who noted the first baseman had a slow start and a rainy spring forced the Tigers to play a series of fatiguing late-season doubleheaders.

However, Greenberg, who died in 1986, was always mindful of prejudice. His last year as a player coincided with Jackie Robinson’s first, and he made his support and respect clear to the first black player in the major leagues —

something Robinson mentioned repeatedly to his own biographers.

Greenberg’s success on the field did not divert his attention from what was happening in the wider world. In a brief overview of what came after 1938, Kaplan described how Greenberg was one of the first baseball pros to enlist in the Army, in 1941. In his prime playing years, he put the game aside and entered the military. After an honorable discharge, he reenlisted in the Army Air Forces, serving until the end of the war.

“He was a celebrity but he didn’t just do morale-boosting tours with no active duty,” Kaplan said. “He was actively involved, on bombers in the Chinese theater and the Burma theater.”

Only toward the end of the war did Greenberg take a less active role, serving in a more administrative capacity.

And then, with characteristic aplomb, he went right back to playing for the Tigers, leading the team to the 1945 World Series championship.

In writing this book, Kaplan drew on a lifetime of sports fandom. His first book was “501 Baseball Books Fans Must Read Before They Die.” His second, “The Jewish Olympics: The

History of the Maccabiah Games,” published in 2015, broke ground on a subject that had received almost no mainstream coverage. In addition to his own popular and meticulous blogs — Ron Kaplan’s Baseball Bookshelf and Kaplan’s Korner on Jews and Sports — he helped launch JTA’s Jewish Sports Facebook page.

Kaplan lives in Montclair with his wife, Faith Krausman, a veterinarian as well as an author, and their daughter, Rachel, a photographer. They are members of Bnai Keshet, a Reconstructionist synagogue in Montclair, New Jersey.

Next up, if Kaplan stays with his current game plan, is a work about players who were, well, “next up.” Provisionally titled “On Deck to History,” it will feature anecdotes and interviews with players waiting their turn at bat during some of the greatest moments in the sport.

Kaplan cited an example, also about another record held by “The Bambino”: Dusty Baker, the longtime player and manager, was on deck when another Hammerin’ Hank — Atlanta Braves legend Hank Aaron — hit the home run that broke Ruth’s lifetime record of 714. It is just such a moment that a sports fan and storyteller can’t resist.

Qatar blowback: What it means for Israel Qatar’s ruling Al-Thani clan has been supportive of some of the Islamist movements that have long roiled the region. It was especially galling to Qatar’s neighbors that precisely in the period following the Sept. 11 attacks, when governments in the region were seeking to suppress the extremist Islamist tendencies that underpinned the terrorists’ ideologies, Qatar continued to help nurture Islamist movements. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi especially resents Qatar for its backing of the short-lived Muslim Brotherhood presidency of Mohamed Morsi, whom al-Sisi ousted in 2013.

For years, the emirate has offered safe haven to the leadership of Hamas, the Brotherhood affiliate that runs the Gaza Strip. And in 2014, it joined with Turkey in attempting to broker an end to Hamas’ war with Israel that would have been friendlier to Hamas than Israel wanted. Egypt intervened and helped Israel impose an end to the war that was more to Israel’s liking, and that kept Hamas isolated.

Qatar houses and underwrites Al-Jazeera, the muckracking, at times pro-Islamist and generally provocative satellite television channel that has proven an irritant to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the other regimes. Depending on who is talking, Qatar’s critics hate the light the network casts on their oppression, or are sick and tired of what they see as its agenda-driven “fake news.”

Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi, a UAE-based columnist for Newsweek, says that the nations effectively blockading Qatar want nothing less than for the channel to be shut down.

Containing Iran’s influence is the number one priority for Saudi Arabia. The oil producing behemoth has watched with alarm as Iran has exploited regional unrest to expand its influence in nations where the Saudis once had considerable sway — including Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen. The Saudis, like Israel, also believe that Iran has ambitions to become a nuclear weapons power.

Qatar houses the largest U.S. airbase in the region and has contributed to efforts to roll back Iranian ambitions in Syria. But it is also a small nation that has for years sought to appease the looming giants surrounding it — the Saudis to the south and west, the Iranians across the Persian Gulf. Qatar shares a gas field with Iran, signed a security agreement with the country and was almost alone among Gulf states in welcoming the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that Saudi Arabia and Israel revile.

By Ron Kampeas, JTA WASHINGTON — Five Arab nations cut ties with Qatar on Monday, escalating a longsimmering competition for preeminence in the region into actions that could set the stage for war.

Saudi Arabia, which is leading the charge, has cut off Qatar’s only land crossing – and what one Saudi-friendly estimate says is as much as 40 percent of the tiny emirate’s food supply. The other four nations cutting all ties with Qatar are Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Yemen.

Meanwhile, Iran is pledging humanitarian support for Qatar. Given Iran’s propensity for meddling and its relative military strength, any robust Iranian assistance to the emirate could further unsettle the region.

The tensions come as President Donald Trump hopes to align U.S. allies in the region – including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Israel – in a united front to contain Iran and crush Islamist terrorists.

A

few months ago, when we were in Poland, we heard an incredible story regarding the Mozhitzer Rebbe’s student, Azriel David Fastag, who was in a cattle car on the way to Treblinka. It was Reb Azriel who composed many of the magnificent melodies that the Chasidim of Mozhitz are famous for, and in the cattle car, the clickety clack of the wheels inspired one last tune.

On the spot, he composed the haunting melody of Ani Maamin (one of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith: that we believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Moshiach even though he may tarry) and began to sing.

The powerful tune inspired those around him to sing along and soon Jews in the neighboring cattle cars picked up the tune and began to sing as well.

It must have been incredible to behold: hundreds of Jews in cattle cars en route to their deaths in Treblinka reaffirming in song their faith in G-d and believing in redemption against all the odds.

Realizing the power of this niggun (tune) Reb Azriel begged for volunteers to jump from the train and bring the niggun back to the Mozhitzer rebbe. Two students volunteered, one of whom survived the jump and succeeded in his mission.

How does one maintain such a level of faith against such seemingly insurmountable odds? here is an intriguing story in this week’s portion of Be’Ha’alotcha: And the people became as Mitonenim (complainers), (speaking) evil in the ears of Hashem.

(Bamidbar 11:1) Rashi explains that the word “Mitonenim” refers to those who are looking for an excuse to complain; the people were really looking for a way to distance themselves from Hashem.

Rashi suggests they were complaining about their difficult journey — “We have traveled three days without a respite!” And yet Rashi previously understands (ibid.

10:33) that they completed a three day journey in a one day because Hashem wanted to bring them into the land of Israel immediately. So why were they complaining?

And how could a people that witnessed the splitting of the sea and the Exodus from Egypt, (not to mention the receiving of the Torah and a direct encounter with G-d at Sinai) complain about anything?

Truth be told, the reason people have a hard time saying thank you, is because when you thank someone it means, on a certain level, that you owe them. And we don’t like to be indebted to anyone because it is difficult for us to feel we are no longer in control. enerally, people who complain need an attitude adjustment; they look at the cup as half empty, and see the clouds rather than the silver linings. And worst of all, the target of their complaints is often the source that should have earned their trust and gratitude. Why do people do this?

The Ramban (ibid.

10:35) quotes the Midrash which suggests that when the Jewish people left Mount Sinai they were like “a child running away from school.” But why would they run from Sinai, the place where we received the Torah and experienced the presence of G-d on such a high level?

Kids struggle with school because they have to give up their freedom, and the receiving of the Law at Sinai was the epitome of realizing we are no longer in control —Hashem runs the world, something that is difficult for some people to accept.

In fact this is true in our personal lives as well. Most arguments begin with complaints and revolve around our desire to be in control. Whatever the symptoms of the argument, most arguments stem from a perception that someone else is imposing a different perspective or reality on us, and we struggle with this because then maybe we are no longer in control.

But if we really understood that we never were in control because only G-d (Hashem) is in control, then there would be nothing to complain about. f we really understood that Hashem runs the world we would never complain, because whatever the situation, it would by definition be a situation presented to us as a gift, by no less than Hashem!

According to Rashi, the people were looking to distance themselves from Hashem. But it wasn’t about the journey (especially as the three day journey only took a day), nor was it about any reasonable issue.

Rather, it was about the fact that they simply did not like being told what to do.

Accepting that we are not in control and learning to let go is the best way to let go of all the complaints and stresses that hold us back from living a meaningful G-d-filled life.

And once you know that Hashem runs the world, then even in a cattle car headed for Treblinka, you can still sing, and believe, with perfect faith.

was in the frozen yogurt store Erev Shavuot, buying yogurt to make a cake for dessert, when I bumped into my cousin Danny Gluck. He started to say how his daughter Rylee loved … and I thought he was going to say frozen yogurt. To my surprise he said she loves reading my column each week.

He went on to say that she’s disappointed when I skip a week. To say I was surprised, was an understatement. Rylee is only 8 and in the third grade. She is a voracious reader, and is at the top of her class. When she’s not reading mysteries, she loves reading “Jerry stories” in The Jewish Star. I’m truly honored and grateful that Rylee Paige Gluck is my biggest (and perhaps youngest!) fan.

Talking about the yogurt store, (which happens to be steps away from the LIRR Hewlett station), how crazy is it, that the LIRR is now reduced to providing us with “late notes” begging indulgence from bosses, partners or employees. Feels like I’m back in elementary or high school (in BTA and Central Brooklyn, they were called “admit notes”) hoping to come up with an excuse (valid or otherwise) whenever I found myself in hot water. What makes it even harder to deal with, is that so many of us run crazily to catch our LIRR trains twice daily, arriving breathlessly and sweating, only to reach Penn Station in the morning or home in the evening hours late and soundly demoralized and defeated.

One evening two weeks ago, I noticed my husband Jerry, conspicuously limping on the

Before I knew it the train doors had already opened, and the doors were now closing, so I ran towards the doors and tripped as I flew onto the floor of the train and the doors closed on me. I was half in and half out. Everyone jumped up to help me but I was humiliated, so I shook it off and said I was perfectly fine.

As I sat down, the pain in my knee was so intense that I started to sweat profusely and almost blacked out. I still blame Brad Pitt for the pain in my knee, which recurs from time to time all these years later.

Since this article started in the yogurt store, here are two wonderful frozen yogurt recipes that can be made without an ice cream machine. It comes from Gemma Stanford of Gemma’s Bigger Bolder Baking.

platform and gingerly attempting to navigate the steps to the street below, appearing to have aged 25 years during his train ride back to Woodmere on the LIRR. He explained that he was running full throttle (for a 62 year old) down Seventh Avenue to Penn Station, from his office, attempting to avoid other pedestrians and tourists, as if he was running on an obstacle course. All of a sudden, he unexpectedly found himself launched airborne, as if shot out of a cannon, landing with a thud on his knees and hands on the sidewalk. erry was stunned as he initially had no idea what had happened; a concerned crowd began to gather around him offering to help him up and asking if they should call an ambulance. It turns out that Jerry failed to observe a homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk and flew over him, as if the sleeping man had executed the technically perfect open field tackle, dropping Jerry like a tackling dummy. Of course, I panicked that he had killed the poor guy, instead of inquiring about Jerry first. Jerry reassured me that the man was fine.

“He must have been terrified,” I said.

“No,” Jerry answered. “He sort of lifted his head, not aware that he had effectuated the most beautiful open field tackle on Seventh Avenue in quite some time.” Jerry went on to proudly explain that he had employed technically sound technique while being tackled, protecting his face and coming down on his hands and rolling as he learned to do while playing football in Marine Park with his Yeshiva Rambam classmates; they played almost every Sunday through elementary school. Yet Jerry maybe, for the first time in his life, felt older; no longer youthful, based on how concerned everyone appeared when running to Jerry’s aid.

Jerry has been a really good athlete his whole life and has fallen dramatically and spectacularly many times off bikes, while skiing and hiking, etc., and had never elicited the level of concern on the faces of others who had witnessed Jerry’s Evil Knievel-like landing.

Jerry immediately jumped back on his feet, not showing any evidence of pain to those who witnessed his fall, and continued, running, almost without missing a beat, to Penn Station, to prove to all and perhaps especially himself that he can still keep up and maintain his place in the herd racing heedlessly in New York.

Although his pain was palpable, he refused to show it until he got home and his knees had swelled up. I told him that he needs to learn to look ahead and down when he walks or runs.

I explained that he tends not to be observant and that he can trip over things. But then he reminded me of the time, back in 2004, when I was waiting for a train and gazing transfixed at the cover of a newspaper. It was a full page

Strawberry Frozen Yogurt

4 servings Ingredients: 2 cups frozen strawberries 10 ounces (You can freeze fresh strawberries or buy them frozen) 2 Tbs honey or agave nectar 1/4 cup plain yogurt ( Greek, non fat or full fat) 1/2 Tbs fresh lemon juice Instructions: Add the frozen strawberries, honey or agave nectar yogurt and lemon juice into a food processor. Process until creamy, about 2–3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to make sure there are no lumps left.

Transfer it into an airtight freezable container and freeze for a minimum of six hours, but preferably overnight. Store in the freezer for up to one month.

Chocolate Banana Frozen Yogurt

4 servings Ingredients: 2 frozen medium bananas 2 Tbs honey or agave nectar 1/4 cup plain yogurt, (Greek, non fat or full fat) 1/3 cup cocoa powder 2 tsp vanilla extract Instructions: Add the frozen bananas, honey or agave nectar, yogurt, cocoa powder and vanilla extract into a food processor. Process until creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the ball to make sure there were no lumps left. Transfer it to an airtight freezable container and freeze for a minimum of six hours for preferably overnight. Store in the freezer for up to one month.

Also seen by Qatar’s neighbors as bad form, according to the Financial Times: $1 billion paid by Qatar to Iranian officials and an al-Qaeda affiliate to free 26 members of the ruling clan who had been on a falconry expedition in Iraq. (No word on the status of the birds.)

It’s Trump

Trump’s message last month when he visited Saudi Arabia and addressed regional leaders was twofold: Let’s unite to crush terrorism and contain Iran and what you do on your own time is not our business. It looks like the Saudis were listening.

The Qatari crisis isn’t the first time Trump’s winks and nods precipitated trouble.

Just days after top Trump officials said last month they would be okay with the Assad regime in Syria outlasting the civil war – another break with years of U.S. policy – the Syrian regime allegedly launched its worse gas attack on civilians since 2013.

Trump himself has also made contradictory noises about Qatar. In a meeting with Al-Thani in Saudi Arabia last month, Trump referred to Qatar’s purchase of “beautiful military equipment” from the United States.

But in a tweet early Monday after news of the Saudi squeeze broke, Trump wrote: “During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar - look!”

It’s good for Israel

Five Arab nations just pulled off what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has for years wished the West would do: Exact a painful price on a nation for flirting with Hamas and Iran.

It’s bad for Israel

Qatar was the only Persian Gulf nation that, from 1996 to 2000, allowed Israel to run a semi-diplomatic mission – a business interests section – on its soil. Its consistent posture on the boycotts that so aggravate Israel is that they are counterproductive. It has hosted Israel at its tennis tournaments and said that, should it win a spot, Israel would be welcome when it hosts the World Cup in 2022. The late Shimon Peres, when he was deputy prime minister, in 2007, made a highprofile visit to Qatar.

Jonathan Schanzer, a vice president at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the Israelis have “not been happy with the presence of Hamas in the capital of a major U.S. ally.” On the other hand, he said Israel has been working with Qatar since 2014 to keep the Gaza Strip from collapsing into chaos.

And while Israel’s outward posture toward Iran has been one of confrontation, it is not unappreciative of efforts by Qatar to moderate the Iranian regime, if only because that could mitigate the dangers of a regional arms race, said Anthony Cordesman, who holds the Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“From Israel’s viewpoint, you have to decide if you want a constant arms race or you want the kind of pressure on Iran that will moderate it,” he said.

What should Israel do?

Stay out, stay quiet. There’s no upside to buying in, said Cordesman.

“The best position is to hope that if Israel stays out of this, what you will get is a compromise that will, on one hand, put more pressure on Qatar in terms of Islamic extremism, particularly the financing of extremists, but it will not freeze the situation with Iran as a whole,” he said.

Bibi’s Arab ‘street’ hope WASHINGTON (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said alliances of convenience between Israel and Sunni Arab states could lead to improved perceptions of Israel on the “Arab street.”

Shared interests of crushing the rise of Islamist terrorist groups “may eventually open the door not only for changing the relations of governments abut also to change the perception of Israel in the Arab street,” Netanyahu said in a conversation with five alumni of an American Jewish Committee Israel advocacy training program.

A video of the conversation, filmed recently in Jerusalem, was screened Tuesday at the annual AJC conference in Washington.

“In parts of the Arab world, Israel is no longer the demon it once was — we take a back seat to some of these forces” Netanyahu said, referring to the Islamist terrorist groups.

By Ben Sales, JTA Soon after Nechama Levy moved to Brooklyn five years ago, she opened a bicycle repair shop. The spacious, high-ceilinged store was just down the street from a new pub with exposed brick walls.

Like many who recently recently to the rapidly gentrifying borough, Levy, 33, was drawn to the area’s relatively cheap rents — at least back then — plus its bicycling culture.

Levy also ensconced herself in one of Brooklyn’s Jewish trends: a curated, artisanal type of liberal Judaism. Like much of brownstone Brooklyn, her neighborhood has a growing galaxy of independent prayer groups, one of which Levy herself founded, the Brooklyn Women’s Chavurah, a women-led service.

But what makes her growing Jewish community unique is that it’s on the home turf of Chabad, perhaps the most visible Hasidic Orthodox group in the world.

“There’s a very independent spirit here,” Levy said about the neighborhood. “Not only were there a number of spaces that attracted very wonderful people, but there was an ethos of ‘What do you have to offer, and what can you create’?”

Located in central Brooklyn, Crown Heights is a tranquil yet vibrant neighborhood lined with the borough’s iconic brownstones. Home to large West Indian and African-American communities, Crown Heights has been Chabad’s base since the group escaped Europe in 1940.

According to the UJA-Federation of New York’s 2011 study, some 24,000 Jews lived in the neighborhood — about a fifth of its residents — with residents saying the number has since risen.

The neighborhood is infamously known for 1991 riots in which black demonstrators attacked Jewish residents after a black child died when he was struck by a car in the motorcade of the Chabad rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson. A yeshiva student visiting from Australia was killed and several people were injured.

Today the neighborhood might be better known for its rapid gentrification, following the path of nearby neighborhoods like Park Slope, where rents rose nearly 50 percent between 1990 and 2014, or Williamsburg, where the increase for that period was close to 80 percent, according to a study by New York University’s Furman Center. The study put Crown Heights among the city’s top 15 gentrifying neighborhoods.

latest frontiers in that process of gentrification, with rents rising and new yuppie arrivals moving into lower-income minority neighborhoods.

“The reality of Crown Heights today is that it’s a vibrant, alive, Caribbean-American and African-American community,” said Cindy Greenberg, Repair the World’s New York City director, noting the neighborhood’s “small-town feel.” But at the same time, she said, “I think a lot of the newcomers feel uneasy about what it means to move into a predominantly AfricanAmerican, Caribbean-American neighborhood and know that they’re part of the wave of gentrification that’s caused all these prices to rise.”

Repair the World opened its Crown Heights office two years ago precisely to recruit young Jews to volunteer amid a lower-income population that could benefit from community service, Greenberg said. Since then, it has engaged in services like emergency food relief, help with food stamps and afterschool tutoring.

Though there have been some hiccups along the way — some members of the Chabad community objected to a modern Orthodox synagogue erecting an eruv — the fracas has blown over. Both Chabadniks and the newer Jewish arrivals say their communities get along, even if they mostly operate apart.

“The community somehow becomes more cohesive, it becomes more accepting,” said Dov Alpert, a co-founder of Kavod. “Here, everyone is trying to be more nice and friendly. That’s the M.O. — trying to be nice.”

Sometimes the two communities cooperate.

Mordechai Lightstone, who runs Chabad’s social media, invites independent minyan-goers to his home for meals and, outside of his official Chabad role, sits on Repair the World’s young leadership board.

“When you speak of young Jews, the intersectionality of Jewish identity has shifted,” Lightstone said. “They no longer say I go to just this thing. They’ll go to Repair the World and do social justice stuff and then they express themselves Jewishly, but when they want a Shabbat meal they go to Ari Kirschenbaum or go to me.”

Ben Weiner, a fellow at Repair the World, welcomes the Chabad teenagers who come to his office on Fridays asking if he wants to put on tefillin. On a Friday before Passover, after laying the tefillin on his arm, Weiner invited the teenagers to volunteer at a Repair the World event that educated local children — Jewish and nonJewish — about the holiday. The teens agreed.

“Whenever I’m around, I like to have them wrap tefillin and engage the conversation to get a little view into what their community does and what they believe in,” said Weiner, 23, a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.

“I wasn’t sure they would come. I was really happy they did, and were willing to give that additional perspective, knowing that different customs would be taught that day.”

Young Jews who are new to Crown Heights say the neighborhood’s diversity and open attitude makes them feel free to express themselves spiritually.

“It was the first time I experienced a Jewish community that I felt a part of, that reflected my social justice values and religious values,” said Malkah Nadoff, 27, a Chicago native who moved to Crown Heights in 2014. “One thing that stands out to me is that there are people with different levels of observance that share community and share space. There’s no pressure around someone being too religious or someone not being religious.”

Still, the newer communities are experiencing some growing pains. Residents recognize not all the minyans can survive. Levy, the bike shop owner, wonders how much the Women’s Chavurah will stay active now that a new egalitarian Saturday morning service has popped up.

Lightstone said the gentrification that’s come along with the new arrivals has made conditions difficult for longstanding Crown Heights families. But he added that if the newcomers engage with existing residents, and get to know their cultures, they are welcome in the neighborhood.

“I don’t think anyone is doing something wrong by moving here,” he said. “If you’re moving to Crown Heights and have a respect for people here before you, and you have the history they have, as long as you do that, you’re doing the best you can.”

Israel courts Muslim allies in a return to Africa

By Adam Abrams, JNS.org Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited western Africa this week as part of a broad government initiative to expand Israel’s influence on that continent, following Netanyahu’s historic trip to eastern Africa last year.

The objectives of Israel’s pivot towards Africa include improving the outcomes for the Jewish state on U.N. votes, expanding economic cooperation, curbing Iranian influence in Africa and establishing diplomatic relations with Muslim-African states.

Netanyahu’s Africa trip in 2016 was the first visit to the continent by a sitting Israeli prime minister in 29 years.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Israel aims to enhance collaboration with African states in areas including “agriculture, desertification and climate change, water, trade, education, health, homeland security, cyber and communications, energy, culture and science,” as well as in the fight against terrorism.

“The purpose of this trip is to dissolve this majority, this giant bloc of 54 African countries that is the basis of the automatic majority against Israel in the U.N. and international bod-

ies,” Netanyahu told reporters Saturday night, before departing for Liberia to address 15 African nations at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) conference.

“This is the first time they have invited the leader of a non-African country to address them. I very much appreciate it. Israel is returning to Africa in a big way,” said Netanyahu.

Upon arriving in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, Netanyahu—accompanied by a large diplomatic delegation, including EthiopianIsraeli Member of Knesset Avraham Neguise (Likud)—was greeted by Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Netanyahu then met with Marcel Alain de Souza, president of ECOWAS, to discuss how to advance Israel’s economic cooperation with the African bloc.

Netanyahu addressed the 15 member states of ECOWAS, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

“This has been a dream to come here to this organization in west Africa. And there is so much…that we can do for the betterment of our peoples,” Netanyahu said.

Due to Netanyahu’s presence, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI cancelled plans to attend the conference.

A major goal of the Israeli government’s multifaceted “return” to Africa is to establish diplomatic relations with Muslim-African states.

The first fruits of this effort came last summer, when Netanyahu travelled to east Africa for the 40th anniversary of the 1976 hostage rescue operation in Entebbe, Uganda, which resulted in his brother Yoni’s death. During the visit, Netanyahu visited Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Rwanda. The Israeli leader met with the presidents of Somalia and Kenya, two countries that had severed diplomatic relations with Iran in January 2016.

Following the trip, Netanyahu restored diplomatic relations with Guinea, a Muslim-majority country and the first African nation to sever ties with Israel following the 1967 Six-Day War. Days later, Dore Gold, then the director of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, met with the president of Chad, another Muslim-African nation that has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

Netanyahu’s courting of Muslim-African states continued this week when he met with

Senegalese President Macky Sall on the sidelines of the ECOWAS conference. After the meeting, Israel and Senegal immediately restored full diplomatic ties and agreed to pursue joint economic and agricultural initiatives.

Israel and Senegal had severed ties after Senegal cosponsored last December’s United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which denounced Israel’s settlement policy, and labeled eastern Jerusalem and its Jewish holy sites as “occupied Palestinian territory.” At the time, Israel recalled its ambassador to Senegal and suspended its aid programs with the African nation.

Netanyahu met with several other African heads of state at the ECOWAS gathering, including Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. Netanyahu and Akufo-Addo agreed to foster warm relations. Mali, a Muslim-majority country, has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

Dr. Moshe Terdiman, founder and director of the Research of Islam and Muslims in Africa (RIMA) think tank, explained the interplay between Israel’s outreach to Ghana, Mali and Niger.

Kushner’s family is a legend in a Belarus town

By Cnaan Liphshiz, JTA NOVOGRUDOK, Belarus — People in Jared Kushner’s ancestral town tend to speak very highly of President Donald Trump.

In Novogrudok — a picturesque city of 30,000 in western Belarus, about halfway between Minsk and Bialystok, Poland — Trump’s election is especially celebrated because it adds Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and key advisor, to the city’s short list of international success stories.

“Of course I am very proud that there is someone from Novogrudok in the White House,” said Boris Semyonov, a 57-year-old businessman, when asked about the subject last week in Lenin Square — a wide, clean space in the city center featuring a bust of the communist leader. “I am waiting for him to visit us.”

Yulia Silevskaya, a jurist in her twenties, said Kushner’s post “adds prestige” to her city.

Like many other locals, Semyonov and Silevskaya were familiar with Kushner’s name and his White House title; in addition to being married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka, Kushner is also a senior White House advisor.

But unlike many people — including residents of the United States — the citizens of Novogrudok had known about the Kushners long before the presidential election.

In Novogrudok, the Kushners are remembered and revered — not for their Trump connections or their sprawling real estate empire, nor for the scandal that engulfed Kushner’s father, Charles, or the recent allegations that he proposed a back channel for communication between the Trump administration and Russia.

Rather, the Kushners are known for the daring escape from the local ghetto in one of the most famous acts of Jewish resistance to the Nazis.

The Kushners’ story features prominently at Novogrudok’s humble Museum of Jewish Resistance. The two-room museum, which opened in 2007, features pictures of Kushner’s paternal

family — his great-grandfather, Zaidel; his wife, Hinda; their daughter, Rae; and her two siblings. The museum also displays the bunk beds where the family was forced to sleep when the Germans rounded up the local Jews into the Novogrudok ghetto.

In addition to Novogrudok’s wartime Jewish population of 6,000 — about a quarter of its total population — the Nazis crammed an additional 24,000 Jews from neighboring towns into a ghetto that was built around around a courthouse.

“The Kushners were a well-off family that, before the war, owned several shops in the center, was known to many people here,” said Marina Yarashuk, director of the Museum of History and Regional Studies in Novogrudok, which operates the Jewish museum. “So it’s natural that they should feature in the display.”

But what really makes the Kushners’ story stand out, Yarashuk added, is how they stuck together through a remarkable escape. Their plan seemed doomed to fail, but ultimately enabled them to survive the Holocaust and fight the Nazis alongside Jewish partisans.

“It’s an amazing story,” Yarashuk said. “I’m glad that it’s now coming out, even if it’s only because everyone is so interested in Jared Kushner.”

The Kushners’ unlikely survival centers upon the actions of Rae Kushner, Jared’s steel-willed paternal grandmother who was 16 when the Germans placed her with her parents, sister and brother in the ghetto.

Having survived at least five “selections” for murder by machine gun — including the one in which her mother was killed — Rae joined her brother in leading a daring escape through

a tunnel that was dug underneath the heavilyguarded ghetto, which was surrounded by electric wire. Rae recalled her role in the escape — which included removing dirt, as well as obtaining work tools and information from nonJews who had entered the ghetto with the Germans’ permission — in a two-hour interview she gave in 1982 to the Kean College of New Jersey Holocaust Resource Center.

In what became one of Belarus’ best-known Holocaust stories, Rae helped lead prisoners through the weeks-in-the-making escape tunnel, which was the longest of its kind in Nazi-occupied Europe and facilitated the biggest escape through a tunnel by Jews.

The diggers — who concealed the earth they removed inside double walls and attics — led 350 men and women to freedom through the tunnel and into the woods. There, the survivors joined the Bielski partisans — a group of some 1,000 Jews named after the three brothers who led them, and whose bravery was the subject of the 2008 film “Defiance.”

As organizers, Rae and her brother, Honie, had earned a spot among the first to crawl out — what was considered a far safer position than at the end of the line. But she gave up her prime position to be with her 54-year-old father and 15-year-old sister. “If we live, we live together. If we die, we die together,” she recalled in the interview.

That decision may have saved her life, as well as that of her sister and her father, who was so weakened by months of malnutrition that he needed his daughters to carry him. Rae’s brother, who was among the first to emerge, disappeared without a trace. He was never seen again.

Today, the tunnel — which was dug inside a barrack and is now the site of the museum — is commemorated by a red-pebble path that traces its 225-yard trajectory all the way to the exit point, which is today a hole that borders a car reSee Kushner’s on page 19

The attention devoted to the Kushners and their escape — as well as the general awareness of the story among Novogrudok’s locals — are typical of the success of Holocaust education in Belarus, according to Yuri Dorn, a former leader of Belarus’ Jewish community of 15,000 people.

Whereas revisionism is a growing problem among Belarus’ neighbors, with the exception of Russia, “the Holocaust is taught elaborately in schools in Belarus, where museums and memorials are set up and maintained,� he said.

President Alexander Lukashenko’s undemocratic rule and police-state policies may be condemned internationally, Dorn added, “but when it comes to Holocaust education and commemoration, Belarus is a world leader.�

This is partly because during World War II, Nazis killed some 2.23 million people in Belarus — a quarter of its population, including many non-Jews, Dorn said — a number too great to ignore.

Even so, the Kushners’ story is proof to Semyonov, the businessman, that the suffering of Jews was particularly intense. “The occupation in Belarus was a national tragedy,� he said.

But Israel’s stance on climate change shows that, in some ways, it’s more like the rest of the world than like the United States.

After Israel signed on to the Paris accords in 2015, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to his cabinet sounded like it could have been given by then-President Barack Obama.

Netanyahu called the accords an “important agreement.� He acknowledged the reality of global warming and pledged to combat it.

Enforcing the agreement, he said, “demands international discipline, which is not easy, but for the good of humanity, I hope that it will be found.�

To that end, Israel promised, by 2030, to keep greenhouse gas emissions at about their current levels. Taking population growth into account, the plan amounts to a per-capita reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 26 percent. Israel’s plan also included an eightfold increase in renewable energy sources, implementing greener building codes to promote energy efficiency and investing in public transit.

At the time, Israeli climate activists called the commitments insufficient. But they welcomed the plan as a first step.

It didn’t concern Trump’s broken promise to relocate the U.S. embassy, or his reported leak of Israeli intelligence.

It was about climate change.

After President Trump announced the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris accords, the landmark 2015 agreement to fight global warming, Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz joined the chorus of international leaders criticizing his decision. “Even if there’s a 50 percent likelihood that climate change and global warming are caused by human activity, it is our duty to act to minimize risks,� Steinitz posted on Facebook Thursday, the same day as Trump’s announcement. “The Paris accords were a rare occurrence in which the world united — save for Syria and Nicaragua — to care for the welfare and health of future generations.�

Like the U.S., Israel has a right-leaning government, with left-wing parties largely limited to protest votes. The American and Israeli governments appear to agree on the dangers of extremist Islamism, and their leaders have heaped praise on each other with regards to everything from military action to economic policy.

In Rae’s two-hour interview, which was archived by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, she recalled how she forced a farmer to lead her family into the woods, where they lived for months on food given to them by locals until they were discovered by the Bielski partisans, who had heard about the escape and sought out survivors in nearby villages. The Kushners lived in the woods for a year, keeping watch for German troops and helping maintain the partisans’ camp until liberation in May, 1945.

Rae then took her family to a refugee camp in Czechoslovakia and, later, to Italy. She married her husband, Joseph Berkowitz, also from the Novogrudok area, in Budapest. Since he was from a poor family, he took her better-known name.

They emigrated to the United States in 1949 and settled in Brooklyn, where they raised four children, including Jared’s father, Charles. Joseph Kushner got a job as a construction worker, but by the time of his death in 1985, he had built a real-estate empire comprising more than 4,000 apartments.

Charles Kushner has visited Novogrudok several times, and even received a tour of the museum in 2014, Yarashuk said. Rae Kushner visited at least once before her death. The family donated some funds toward the construction of the Jewish resistance museum, according to Tamara Vershitskaya, the museum’s former director, who declined to provide details.

Recent Tehillim commentaries 1: Rabbi Davis AlAn JAy Gerber Kosher BooKworm

O

f all of the books that comprise the Holy Bible of the Jewish people, the Psalms — Tehillim — is among the most venerated. This can be seen inasmuch as there are more varied commentaries, and translations, of Tehillim, in all languages, than of any other book outside that of the Torah itself.

This week will be devoted to the recent republication of the classic “Metsudah Tehillim: Linear Edition” by Rabbi Avraham Davis. My remarks will be restricted to Rabbi Davis’ take on the depth of meaning that the Book of Psalms represents in the Jewish literary tradition and of its use in Jewish liturgy.

“All the books of the Bible are G-d’s teachings, revealing, as it were, His Divine message to man,” Rabbi Davis teaches. “Sefer Tehillim, however, is different in one significant respect. In the Torah and the Prophets, G-d speaks to man. In Sefer Tehillim, man ad-

dresses G-d. In the other sacred books, G-d reaches out to His people through his prophets, to draw them near to Him. In Sefer Tehillim, man’s soul reaches out to G-d in a constant search for knowledge and nearness to Him. In Sefer Tehillim G-d does not speak to man but He speaks within man.

“Of all the books of the Bible, except for the Torah, Sefer Tehillim has had the greatest influence upon the development of the Jewish mind and spirit. It has truly become the ‘book of the people,’ many of whom recite its chapters with a frequency and fluency that no other sacred book is accorded. It enjoys this popularity because we identify ourselves with the problems and yearnings portrayed in it. We draw strength, comfort and security from its words. It is basically for this reason that we have published this edition in the linear style which has been so widely acclaimed in the

Metsudah Siddur.

“This style of linear translation gives the reader an excellent opportunity to understand the meaning of the words while reciting them in the original Hebrew text.

It permits him to capture the essence of each praise and prayer. It allows the Tehillim to be ‘said’ without the cumbersome apparatus of lengthy commentaries.”

This short take by Rabbi Davis says it all. He details for us his operational M.O. and thus gives us an effective, practical, and technical path in service to our G-d.

In this upcoming summer season it behooves us to reacquaint ourselves with this precious liturgical medium and to utilize it effectively as we approach the Almighty for whatever we wish to request of him.

Rabbi Davis’ translation, utilizing an ef-

fective English language structure, further serves to enhance both the liturgy’s meaning and our ability to effectively articulate our needs for divine help and response.

O

n your days of rejoicing, on your festivals, and on your new-moon celebrations, you shall sound a note with the trumpets for your burnt offerings and your peace offerings. This shall be a remembrance before your G-d. I am G-d your Lord.” Bamidbar 10:10 When we think about the sounding of the trumpets in the Temple, and its cousin, the sounding of the shofar, our minds jump to the only religious rite of horn sounding we have today, the shofar blasts of Rosh Hashana. However, the interpretation that this depiction refers to Rosh Hashana is not a common one, advanced by Kli Yakar but not many others.

From the other side, we have some Midrash statements, and commentary dem-

onstrating that the “days of your rejoicing” refer to the Sabbath (this second view was recorded by Ibn Ezra, Baal Haturim).

Ibn Ezra’s first view is that the “days of your rejoicing” refers to when you returned from the land of your enemies, or you defeated your enemy and established a day of joy, such as Purim or Chanukah.

If I could be so bold, I would suggest that “the days of your rejoicing” needs a new definition today. Because while there are certainly people who experience joy a lot — I see this most of all with people who are grandparents, delighting in their grandchildren and in their children’s success — for many people, day-to-day life doesn’t always bring a requisite amount of joy.

And insofar as great battles go, beyond Yom Yerushalayim, I think we would all prefer that there to be no battles than there be a great victory. was talking to someone this weekend who told me, “I make a nice living. But after living expenses and tuition bills, I have nothing left.” Can’t buy his wife a present,

can’t afford a simple vacation. Doesn’t want to go anywhere if it’s going to cost money.

Can’t put anything away for retirement or a rainy day. Of course he wouldn’t trade this life for any more dire kind of life, and he wasn’t complaining (he actually lives his life with a very positive attitude!).

I know a lot of people in similar boats.

Normal life expenses are much higher than they were a generation ago, and while some people seem to manage, for others it’s an endless battle of “how can I get more clients?” and “how can I get more work?” and “how can I charge more?” as well as the moral battle of “is it OK to charge for something they don’t need (an extra X-ray, an extra test, replacing a perfectly fine piece of equipment, putting in a wall when a patch would have been sufficient), because they’ll pay anyway, and why should I care?”

And as I tragically learned once again this week, sometimes people bury their pain inside, without seeking help, allowing drugs or untreated depression to take them to the depths of where there is no return.

While it would seem bizarre to sound a trumpet every time we experience a joyous occasion or moment, maybe we can at least find a way to get excited about our triumphs of joy.

Because beyond obligatory simchas — which usually accompany lifecycle events and graduations — we probably have much more to be joyous over, were we to only take notice. heard a story about Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg, who grew up a Yankee fan in the Babe Ruth days, who once made a kiddush after the Yankees won the World Series.

Someone asked him why, and he said, “For the first time in my life,” after over 70 years of getting at least a minimal thrill when he’d hear about a win, “I don’t care about it at all.”

That’s a simcha!

For a kid in school who always gets grades in the 70s, getting an 80 is a simcha!

When a child who has few to no friends is noticed by someone who is socially fine, and invited to hangout, or for Shabbos, that’s a simcha!

Considering the meaning of the Menorah rAbbi dAvid etenGoff

T

he Menorah is one of the most ubiquitous symbols of Judaism. Therefore, nearly every synagogue in the world contains some form or representation of this sacred object. It seems that the Menorah of the Beit Hamikdash, perhaps more than any other, has captured the heart and soul of our people.

The beginning of our parasha, Beha’alotecha, discusses the kohan’s daily mitzvah to light the Menorah: “The L-rd spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and say to him: ‘When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall cast their light toward the face of the Menorah.’ Aaron did so; he lit the lamps toward the face of the Menorah, as the L-rd had commanded Moses.”

Immediately thereafter, we encounter a

brief description of the Menorah: “This was the form of the Menorah: hammered work of gold, from its base to its flower it was hammered work; according to the form that the L-rd had shown Moses, so did he construct the Menorah.” (8:4) The final words of the pasuk, “so did he construct the Menorah,” are very difficult, however, since we do not know to whom the “he” of this verse refers.

The great exegete, Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman (Nachmanides), was one of the many Torah commentators who wrestled with the meaning of our phrase. Based in part on the principle of proximity of language (s’michut), the Ramban, in his Commentary on the Torah on our verse, determined that Moshe constructed the Menorah, since his name was mentioned immediately prior to our indeterminate phrase.

Most students of Tanach, however, know that while Moshe was our teacher, the most humble person who ever lived and the greatest prophet of all time, he is never referred to as an artisan with the requisite skills to create something as intricate as the Meno-

rah. Therefore, with the Midrash Sifrei as his guide, Nachmanides suggested that Moshe learned how to construct the Menorah based upon extensive study and yeoman efforts: “He applied himself assiduously in its study [the Menorah] and he made it according to the mitzvah he had been commanded. So did they state in the Sifrei: ‘To make known to us the praise that Moshe deserved, for just like the Holy One Blessed be He had spoken to him, so did he do’.” (Bamidbar 8:4) n notable contrast, Rashi explained the phrase, “so did he construct the Menorah,” as referring to Bezalel, the chief artisan of the Mishkan, “the one who made it [namely, Bezalel].” Rashi’s suggestion is forthright.

Moreover, in some ways it is the most logical explanation, since the Menorah’s construction is viewed within the context of the overall building of the Mishkan. Thus, since the Torah explicitly tells us that Bezalel was the chief architect of the Portable Sanctuary (Shemot 31:1-5), he would have been the most likely person to have planned, designed, and built the Menorah. His renowned G-d-given

talents would have made him the perfect candidate for this holy task.

Both Rashi and the Ramban offer a fascinating third candidate as the creator of the Menorah. In Shemot 25:31 we read: “And you shall make a Menorah of pure gold. The Menorah shall be made of hammered work; its base and its stem, its goblets, its knobs, and its flowers shall [all] be [one piece] with it.” The Hebrew word employed for “shall be made” is “taiasah,” instead of the expected “ta’aseh.” The first expression is passive and reflexive, whereas the second one is active.

Rashi formulates the significance of this grammatical change in the following manner: The Menorah shall be made: By itself.

Since Moses found difficulty with it [understanding how to create the Menorah], the Holy One, blessed is He, said to him, “Cast the talent [equivalent to sixty-four pounds of gold] into the fire, and it will be made by itself.” Therefore, it is not written: ta’aseh but taiasah. Continued from page 20 haalotecha III) The Ramban closely followed Rashi’s explanation. As such, he, too, explained the above-stated passage as referring directly to Hashem: “[The Menorah] was created via the Holy One blessed be He — by itself.”

Thus, according to the Midrash, Rashi and the Ramban, the designer of the Menorah was none other than the Creator Himself!

Beyond a doubt, this is a truly powerful idea. either Rashi nor the Ramban developed the previously mentioned notion any further. I would like, however, to expand upon their explanation and suggest that it is of singular import if G-d, not man, was the artisan of the Menorah, for after all, one of its major functions was to bring light to the Mishkan and allow the kohanim to operate with a newfound vision of hope and purpose. Moreover, I believe, that the golden Menorah was the ultimate counterbalance to the Golden Calf.

How so? Just as the Torah’s purpose is to bring spiritual light and meaning to the world, so, too, did the Menorah bring physical light to the Jewish people and, by extension, all mankind. As Shlomo Hamelech taught us: “Ki ner mitzvah v’Torah ohr” (“For a commandment is a candle, and the Torah is light” Sefer Mishle 6:23). The Midrash’s explanation of Hashem as the creator of the Menorah, therefore, leads us to view it as the ultimate symbol of reconciliation between the Master of the Universe and our people.

Our relationship was, once again, shalame (complete), for at long last, the Menorah signified our complete kapporah (atonement) for the excesses of the Golden Calf.

OU acts on Rabbi-like positions for women

By Ben Sales, JTA Following its rabbinic ruling prohibiting synagogues from hiring female clergy, the Orthodox Union is pressuring synagogues that have hired the women to change their titles.

In February, the OU issued a Jewish legal ruling by seven rabbis that bars women from serving as clergy or in a position of spiritual authority. Four OU synagogues currently have women serving in formal clergy functions.

Now the OU is sending a three-member delegation to meet with the four synagogues to discuss compliance with the ruling — including requesting that at least two of the women clergy change their titles.

The delegation has met with Ohev Shalom in Washington, which employs Ruth Friedman, who uses the title maharat; Beth Sholom in Potomac, Maryland, where Hadas Fruchter also is a maharat, and Bnai David-Judea in Los Angeles, where Alissa Thomas-Newborn uses the title rabbanit. They have yet to meet with the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, which employs Ramie Smith, whose title is rabba.

All four are graduates of Yeshivat Maharat, a liberal Orthodox seminary here that ordains women as clergy. The maharat title, which was coined by the seminary’s founder, Rabbi Avi Weiss, is a Hebrew acronym for “Jewish legal, spiritual and Torah leader.” In practice, graduates take a range of titles, including rabba and rabbanit.

In the meeting with Ohev Shalom, the delegation spoke with Friedman about her responsibilities at the synagogue and asked her to change her title. Friedman said that she, along with the synagogue’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, will not agree to that.

The members of the OU’s delegation, none of whom are rabbis, are Executive Vice President Allen Fagin, President Martin Nachimson and Mark Bane, who finished his term as president earlier this year. Per OU policy, none of the three are commenting on the meetings.

An OU spokeswoman said she could not comment on the matter.

From the OU’s standpoint, the meetings have been preliminary, fact-finding sessions.

There has been no decision rendered on what steps the group might take should it feel the synagogues are not complying with the ruling. But Herzfeld of Ohev Shalom told JTA that the delegation did not exclude the possibility of expulsion from the OU over the issue.

“It felt like a threat because they sent three men to our congregation and interrogated us about our practices,” he told JTA. “And they said everything is on the table, and they said we’re not in compliance. I took that as a threat, that there’s a possibility of expulsion from the OU. They did not deny that.”

“I’m an optimistic person, but at the same time I could not describe to you what that compromise would look like,” Kanefsky said.

When he founded Yeshivat Maharat in 2009, Weiss created the title in order to avoid the issue of ordaining women as rabbis. The Rabbinical Council of America banned synagogues from hiring women clergy in 2015 and the OU followed suit this year.

“I’m sad for Orthodoxy that there’s so much attention devoted to what women can’t do,” Friedman said. “Maybe we can think of a more constructive identity for our movement than ‘women don’t do stuff in Orthodoxy’.”

Nisman and Halimi: 2 very different Jews, 1 fate ben Cohen viewpoint

T

his is a story about the shared fate of two quite different Jews. They were separated from each other by continents and oceans.

His native tongue was Spanish and hers was French. He lived in downtown Buenos Aires in a swanky bachelor’s apartment. She lived in a rundown suburb of Paris in a modest flat. He cut a dashing figure, often being photographed in public and giving frequent interviews to the media about his work. She was a kindly, shy widow, loved and quietly revered in her community for her work as a kindergarten teacher.

She was older than him. But he died before she did, at a younger age.

For all these differences, they had three important things in common. They were proud Jews. They died because they were Jews. And in both of their cases, that latter fact has yet to be recognized, let alone acted upon, by the investigating authorities.

This story is no hypothetical—though its un-

derlying themes would make for an interesting thought experiment in any number of disciplines.

I refer to the real cases of Alberto Nisman in Argentina and Sarah Halimi in France. For simplicity’s sake, I’ll discuss each of them in turn.

Alberto Nisman, it will be remembered, was the Argentine special prosecutor investigating the 1994 AMIA bombing who was found shot through the head in his apartment in 2015. For the previous decade, Nisman had been making steady progress in identifying and tracking down the Iranian and Hezbollah terrorists responsible for blowing up the AMIA Jewish center in Buenos Aires in July 1994, in which 85 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. But he kept coming up against roadblocks.

The biggest block of all was the Argentine government of former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who thought Nisman knew too much about the secret pact her foreign minister, Hector Timerman, negotiated with the Iranian regime in 2013. The pact absolved Tehran of its responsibility for the worst single antiSemitic atrocity since World War II. Nisman had been due to present a formal complaint about Kirchner’s government’s dealings with the Iranians before the Argentine Congress Jan. 19, 2015. He was found dead Jan. 18.

The first investigators appointed by Kirchner’s government to examine Nisman’s death clumsily pushed its conclusions toward suicide— specifically, with a gun provided to Nisman by an employee of his named Diego Lagomarsino.

But too much about that scenario didn’t compute. For example, the position of Nisman’s body when it was found didn’t match that of a suicide. The bullet entered through the side of his skull, not the temple. The mess left at the crime

scene by the local police made it impossible to ascertain whether Nisman had been alone in his apartment at the time of his death. And so on.

Nisman looked like the 86th victim of the AMIA bombing. And then, in November 2015, Kirchner found herself dislodged from power by the centrist Mauricio Macri. The wheels of justice began slowly turning again. Now, in recent days, the Argentine media has begun See Nisman on page 23

ith all the reunification celebrations taking place, I figured that one more Jerusalem column can’t hurt. Here’s a little vignette to illustrate my Jerusalem Syndrome.

Besides my childhood, I lived in Israel from 1999 to 2007; at some point during that period, negotiations on giving up East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount were intensifying.

I was beside myself.

Each day as I walked to work I would pass the window of a Judaica shop. There was this beautiful menorah; its foreground had petite thimble-sized glass cups with just enough room to slide a wick in and kindle it. It was shaped by the finest silver arc, almost thread-like, with silhouettes of different sized and shaped Jerusalem-domed buildings in an array of colored glass, all under a golden setting sun, hanging by a thread. It was exquisite. Like nothing I had seen before.

As the negotiations for Jerusalem intensified and I kept passing this menorah, somehow in my mind they became intertwined as one. I dreamed of buying that menorah. But I was an

idealistic Israeli newbie and could hardly afford what to me was a small fortune of $250 for a menorah. I had just completed an unpaid internship and was still in the “is it a want or a need” phase of life before buying anything.

But each day as the news about dividing Jerusalem became more dire, I started looking at it as a symbol of my Jerusalem; I imaged myself, teary-eyed, wistfully telling little children one day, “you know in my time, when, after thousands of years, we had Jerusalem again…”

That was it. When I hit that low, I succumbed. I figured out a way to buy the luminescent menorah. I needed to have my version of a “Yerushalayim shel Zahav,” Jerusalem of Gold, with me at home.

A few weeks later, my parents and little brother joined me for Chanukah. That year, there truly was this sense of Jerusalem being in trouble. Jerusalem was literally empty. Her streets and shops, deserted.

We lit that arced stained glass menorah in Jerusalem. Between the quality of the colored stained glass and the dancing flames shining upon this little suspended Jerusalem, it was magical. eanwhile, the negotiations hadn’t relented. If anything, they intensified. As they suddenly took an accelerated turn, hundreds of thousands of Israelis, almost like a primal outpouring, gathered in the streets of Jerusalem to show that the people of Israel stand

with Jerusalem, eternally. This massive demonstration was organized in a matter of mere days.

Backtrack to the previous summer, when I randomly introduced two people who, happily, had become engaged. A day or two before this Stand With Jerusalem evening was to take place, there was a knock on my door. Ever so kindly, yet surprisingly, the family of the groom delivered by courier an airline ticket for me to be a guest at the wedding.

There I was, living and breathing Jerusalem, waiting to join thousands of my people in solidarity,” le-ma’an Yerushalayim, for the sake of Jerusalem. Yet it is not everyday that someone treats you to an international trip. If you think purchasing the menorah was a big deal for me, you can only imagine how special a trip to the U.S. would have been, not to mention joining in the festivities of a wedding so special to me.

I was torn. A trip to America! But there was Jerusalem to consider.

The flight was literally booked for the night of this demonstration. It felt unreal to me. So many people coming from all over the country, almost pilgrimage-like, to Jerusalem, and for the sake of Jerusalem — and I’m going in the opposite direction? It felt so wrong.

How can I walk away from Jerusalem in her hour of need. How can I not stand with my people, with my Jerusalem? How can I look myself in the eye and miss out on this momentum to-

gether with my people and for my people?

I had never had to fight for Jerusalem. This time, it felt like we would all have to fight to keep Jerusalem. Of course I was one person.

My presence at the demonstration would hardly register. But that wasn’t the whole point. The point was Jerusalem. But it was me, too.

I went back and forth. A friend of mine thought I was nuts. We would speak intermittently, and she would just ask, “so, you’re going?” Finally, she just ordered a Nesher taxi, told me to pack and be at her apartment at such and such time to be picked up for the airport.

With a heavy heart, I packed. I arrived at her apartment. But I couldn’t go. I canceled the Nesher.

By now it was sunset. We walked out to the streets of Jerusalem; they were already spilling over with people in the tens of thousands. The roads from the Old City and all the way to the Plaza Hotel were crammed. Not a spare inch to be found.

On that night, I joined the multitudes and became just one more person who stood with Jerusalem Eternal.

Each Chanukah thereafter, in Jerusalem, I kindled my own little domed-Jerusalem menorah, suspended by silver thread under an arc and a glowing golden sun that shone by the dancing Chanukah flames.

The Egyptian defensive infrastructure was extremely poor, and no airfields were yet equipped with hardened aircraft shelters capable of protecting its warplanes. omparing reports about the war from 50 years ago with some of the accounts circulating today reminds me of one of those Star Trek episodes where Kirk and the boys go back in history and change the past — it seems like two different wars.

Fifty years ago, media reports spoke of underdog Israel and her need to defend herself against the warlike acts of the big bullies led by Egypt. They wrote about how Egypt was committing many acts that could be interpreted as acts of war including: conspiring with other belligerent countries (in this case, Syria and Jordan) for a coordinated attack, closing Israel’s access to international waterways (the straits of Tiran), violating the terms of the 1956 armistice by re-militarizing the Sinai, expelling United Nations and United States peace-keeping troops form the Sinai, sending illegal spy-planes to reconnoiter sensitive Israeli areas and massing troops and tanks on Israel’s borders.

But Israel had the nerve to WIN! After the Six Day War, Israel was no longer seen as the underdog, and everything changed. The world doesn’t like any uppity Jews!

The United States tried to prevent the war through negotiations but could not persuade Gamal Abdel Nasser, the Egyptian leader, or the other Arab states to cease their belligerent statements and actions.

Right before the war, President Johnson warned: “Israel will not be alone unless it decides to go alone.” Then, when the war began, the State Department announced: “Our position is neutral in thought, word and deed.”

While the Arabs falsely accused the U.S. of airlifting supplies to Israel, President Johnson imposed an arms embargo on the region (France, Israel’s other main arms supplier at the time, embargoed arms to Israel). Meanwhile, the Soviets were delivering massive amounts of arms to the Arabs and the armies of Kuwait, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Iraq were contributing troops and arms to the Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian fronts. oday’s revisionist history argues that maybe the Six Day War was bad for Israel, since it lead her to become the “evil occupier” nation she is today. Much of the media now relate the tale of the cynical Zionist nation that seized an opportunity to deal a blow to the Arab world, expand her territory, and rule over the Palestinian people. What is lost from this telling is that Judea, Samaria, and the Old City of Jerusalem (commonly known as the West Bank) were never part of an independent Palestinian state; neither was the Gaza Strip. In fact, that Palestinian state never existed, and before June 1967, Judea, Samaria, and the Old City of Jerusalem were occupied by Jordan, and Gaza was occupied by Egypt.

But there is one indisputable fact that today’s revisionist history keeps forgetting: If Israel didn’t fight and win the Six Day War, there would be no Israel today. And if Israel doesn’t protect herself today from the likes of Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS and even Fatah, there will be no Israel in another 50 years.

Despite what most people are likely to believe because of incessant inaccurate media reporting, the Palestinian refugee camps were created and sustained by the Arab League which viewed them (correctly) as a potent weapon against the Jewish state. Nasser knew that by forcing Pales-

Continued from page 22 disclosing details of a forthcoming report from a federal security agency, the Gendarmeria, which concludes Nisman wasn’t alone in his apartment when he died. In other words, the Argentine state may, just may, be about to recognize—more than two years after it happened—that Nisman was murdered.

In Sarah Halimi’s case, by contrast, nobody doubts her death was caused by murder. But as with Nisman in Argentina, the potential political consequences of her death have been a source of worry to both the French authorities and the French media.

Indeed, if you haven’t heard of Sarah Halimi before now, that may explain why. Only a few journalists writing in English, like Marc Weitzman in Tablet, have shed light on this act of sheer evil, which meant it took a few weeks to even get noticed.

In brief, this is what happened: Halimi was an elderly widow, a devoutly Orthodox Jewish woman living in Belleville, a rundown Parisian neighborhood where the Jewish population has declined as the Muslim population has increased. At 4:25 a.m. April 4, while campaigning for the presidential election was in full force, a Malian immigrant, 27-year-old Kada Traore, broke into Halimi’s apartment and proceeded to beat her with abominable sadism.

The police were alerted to Halimi’s screams, arriving to find Traore bellowing “Allahu akbar” (G-d is greater) and “Shaitan” (Satan) behind her front door. Assuming he was a terrorist, they radioed for backup—which arrived moments after Traore threw Halimi’s badly fractured body out of her third floor window.

Nobody—not the police, not the government, not the centrist French politicians like newly elected President Emmanuel Macron, not the media—wanted to talk about Sarah Halimi, before or after the election. They certainly

didn’t want to identify the murder as a frenzied hate crime committed by an Islamist, preferring to depict Traore as the victim of a severe mental illness. They worried that doing otherwise would give an electoral boost to the far-right presidential candidate, Marine Le Pen. And so, like her namesake Ilan Halimi, the young man kidnapped, tortured and murdered by an anti-Semitic Parisian gang in 2006, Sarah Halimi’s inhumanly painful death has been followed by an undignified, sleazy spin exercise about “psychiatric evaluations” and “gang warfare.” early two months later, though, the atmosphere is changing, as it has with Nisman.

More Jewish leaders are calling for Sarah Halimi’s murder to be investigated as an antiSemitic crime.

But as of right now, as far as officialdom is concerned, Alberto Nisman killed himself, and Sarah Halimi’s murder was not connected to her being Jewish—two profoundly unsettling misrepresentations of why these two very different Jews are dead.

These misrepresentations don’t just mask the facts of these two cases, but the very spirit behind these crimes. Nisman was a Jew investigating a terrorist atrocity against a Jewish center; everyone, including the Iranians, threatened “the Jew Nisman” with death, and thus it came to pass. Halimi, meanwhile, was a Jew unfortunate enough to be murdered by a Muslim in a country where public discussion of Muslim anti-Semitism is overwhelmed even when a Jewish supermarket is the target of a terrorist attack.

As I said at the beginning, Nisman and Halimi died in very different circumstances.

But they died, fundamentally, because they were Jews who attracted the ire of Islamists— the Shi’a Islamic Republic of Iran in the AMIA bombing and thus in the Nisman case, and a single Sunni Muslim delinquent in Halimi’s.

Both cases demonstrate once again that violent anti-Semitism is integral to Islamist ideology, to the point where its victims are dehumanized in the very moment of death. We owe them—both of these very different Jews—our voices, now that they are gone.

tinians into “camps” rather than allowing them to be absorbed by the countries in which they settled, they would remain the Arab League’s best weapon against the Jewish state.

Another anti-Israel creation birthed by Nasser (with some help from the Russians) was creating the PLO as a terrorist organization in 1964. That’s not a typo. The PLO led by Yasser Arafat was created almost three years to the day before the start the Six Day War, at an Arab League meeting in Jerusalem, on June 2, 1964.

The PLO’s first act of terror was in January 1965 with an attack on Israel’s National Water Carrier. So, when mainstream media now lectures us that Palestinian terror was a retaliation for the “occupation,” know that you are being lied to.

In the immediate aftermath of the Six Day War, Israel offered to give up everything except Jerusalem in exchange for peace.

Rather than respond to Israel’s invitation, the Arab states met in Khartoum, Sudan, in August 1967 and unanimously decided in favor of the now famous three Khartoum NOs — No recognition, No negotiation, No peace. Better that Israel hold on to the territories taken in the war. Better that the refugees continue languishing in squalor and misery. Better that the Arab states re-arm for Round 4, than to recognize Israel’s right to exist or negotiate toward a peaceful settlement of the conflict. hile the world’s perception of Israel changed 50 years ago, with rare exception those three “nos” are still the official policy of the official Muslim world, but there is a thaw. Egypt and Jordan finally made peace with the Jewish state and the Saudis are working with Israel through back channels. But the Palestinians talk peace in public and teach war at home via their TV sets, newspapers, etc.

At least twice in the past 20 years, Israel offered the Palestinians a deal that gave them very nearly everything they wanted; both times they walked away, because the Palestinian people have not been taught about the opportunities of peace.

The Sunni Arab world has begun to see Israel as a potential ally against Iran, and there are signs that the Saudis maybe losing their patience with the Palestinians. For example, in his May 21, 2017, column in the Londonbased Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily, Saudi Mash’al Al-Sudairi bashed Palestinian leaders. “Some Palestinian leaders, while in power, excelled in two things: rhetoric and missing opportunities, Al-Sudairi said. That was reminiscent of the late Israeli foreign minister Abba Eban who once said that “the Arab’s never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.” I would argue that while peace still seems elusive, it is less elusive than it has been in years.

The past 50 years have seen many changes in the way Israel is viewed, but very little of that matters in the end. In that time, the western world began to recognize and even finance Yasser Arafat and the PLO, eventually expanding to Hamas and Hezbollah. What they don’t recognize even now is that their support of those terrorist groups taught al Qaeda, ISIS and others that terrorism is a legitimate way of getting what they want.

And tiny little Israel? It survived more war, more terrorism, and even Barack Obama, a United States president who did all that he could to de-legitimize the Jewish state, perhaps because it is a Jewish state.

But the real secret to the success of Israel?

It never really was the underdog — not in 1948 and not in 1967. Sure, the IDF is a powerful fighting force, and Israeli intelligence agencies are the best in the world, but the fact is that the land was given to the Jews by a much higher power who promised that as long as we obey His rules it will be the Jews’ forever. That gives Israel the advantage over any human fighting force.

By Cnaan Liphshiz, JTA AMSTERDAM (JTA) — Shortly after the outbreak of the Six-Day War in 1967, Ronny Naftaniel was soliciting donations on the street and putting a lot of money into a box emblazoned with the words “for Israel.”

An Amsterdam Jew who was 19 that year, Naftaniel was one of many pro-Israel activists across Western Europe who collected the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars from individuals supportive of Israel in its fight against Arab neighbors who were widely perceived as the more powerful aggressors.

In Holland especially, the war triggered a popular mobilization by ordinary citizens that featured massive blood drives, group prayers at churches, solidarity rallies and a bumper sticker campaign that was so successful that for a time it rendered ubiquitous the slogan “I stand behind Israel.” Dutch corporations and trade unions mobilized their members to raise millions for Israel.

“There was a genuine anxiety in society for Israel’s fate and relief when it prevailed,” recalled Naftaniel, the longtime head of the Hague-based Center for Information and Documentation on Israel until his retirement in 2012.

“Both led to extraordinary affection and goodwill, also in the media. It was universal and unifying.”

Today, however, Israel is a divisive issue in the Netherlands and across Western Europe, where the mainstream media occasionally question Israel’s very right to exist amid criticism over its perceived occupation of Palestinian land captured in 1967. On the street, expressions of solidarity with Israel often invite attacks by pro-Palestinian Muslims and the left, and are dwarfed by mass demonstrations against Israel that regularly feature anti-Semitic chants.

Meanwhile, the continent’s east has made the opposite journey: Whereas in 1967 merely

mentioning Israel could lead to imprisonment, the Jewish state is now widely cherished in Eastern Europe and Russia as an ally and model for success.

These profound shifts, which may affect the future of European Jewry, are rooted in changes far wider than merely how certain societies view the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Indeed, they reflect dramatic developments in the value systems, demographics and economies both of Israel and of the continent to which it has strong cultural ties.

Ervin Kohn, the leader of the Jewish community of Norway, was preparing for his bar mitzvah when the Six-Day War broke out.

“In my family we were deeply worried about Israel’s future before and during the war, and this anxiety was something shared across Norwegian society,” he said. “Today, it would be different.”

Last week, Norway’s largest workers union escalated its anti-Israel rhetoric to include a call for a total boycott of the country. And in Holland, where trade unions in 1967 donated millions to Israel’s defense, members of the Dutch Federation of Trade Unions in January debated boycotting Israel during a workshop (no decision was made and the federation has no policy of boycotting Israel). Meanwhile, pro-Palestinian demonstrators regularly hold rallies calling for a boycott of Israel opposite the main entrance of the Bijenkorf department store in Amsterdam, which in 1967 collected funds for Israel.

Radical changes also happened in Sweden, where Israel was so popular in the 1960s that it was a preferred destination for thousands of volunteers to kibbutzim and for decades to come. Last year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Sweden is “not a noted friend of Israel” after its foreign minister, Margot Wallstrom, blamed Israel for “executing” Palestinians who tried to kill Israelis and

accused Israel of motivating terrorist attacks in Europe.

Kohn traces the change in attitude on Israel primarily to how “Israeli governments were dragging their feet” in reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians, he said. Kohn advocates applying equal pressure on Israel and the Palestinians to make peace, but in Norway Israel is “not perceived as having done what they could to fulfill the Palestinian national aspirations,” he added.

Across Western Europe, activists critical of Israel have called the Jewish state on its treatment of Palestinians, including in exhibitions held in churches about the detention of children, alleged torture and the slaying of civilians during rounds of fighting with Palestinian and other terrorist groups.

But the Dutch chief rabbi, Binyomin Jacobs, who was 18 in 1967, sees the changing attitudes to Israel as owing also to demographic changes inside Western Europe that have little to do with Israel.

The increase in anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiment in Western Europe cannot be understood, Jacobs argued, without taking into account the arrival there since the 1970s of millions of Muslim Arabs and Turks.

“The people who riot at anti-Israel rallies, who throw firebombs on houses with Israeli flags, who chant ‘Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas’ on the street, they do not act out of frustration with this or that policy,” he told JTA. “They are often immigrants from Muslim countries where anti-Israel sentiment and anti-Semitism is just a normal part of upbringing.”

In 2014, demonstrators at an anti-Israel demonstration in Belgium shouted about killing Jews in Antwerp. The Hague in the Netherlands, France, Germany and many other places saw other anti-Israel events. That year, as Israel See Europe on page 26

While public attitudes toward Israel have soured in Western Europe, they have improved beyond recognition in the formerly communist east, according to Jehoshua Raskin, a Chabad rabbi who works in Russia and was born in 1948 in Nizhny Novgorod east of Moscow.

Raskin and his mother were called traitors by KGB officers who threatened to have them jailed in 1967 over the Raskins’ request to leave Russia for Israel.

“Now Israel, which was demonized during communism as an archenemy of ‘our Arab brothers’ and as a capitalist villain, is synonymous with success in Russia,” said Raskin, who was 18 when the war hit.

Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrated 25 years of diplomatic relations at a a festive event at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Upon his arrival in the Russian capital, Netanyahu was greeted with a red carpet and marching band. His wife, Sara, was given pink flowers.

“We have a solid foundation of trust and understanding to rely on as we make plans for the future,” Putin said during the visit.

Under Putin, “Jewish communities that once distanced themselves from anything Israeli to stay safe are now celebrating cultural events with Israeli flags,” said Chaim Chesler, founder of Limmud FSU, a Jewish educational group that has been working in the former Soviet Union since 1992.

Soviet hostility to Israel also has made Israel popular with enemies of Russia across Eastern Europe, Chesler said. The same applies to Finland, added Gideon Bolotowsky, a former leader of that country’s Jewish community. Widespread sympathy for Israel exists to this day in Finland, he added, where pro-Israel rallies organized by Christian supporters of the Jewish state typically dwarf anti-Israel events.

“You have to remember that in comparison to other European countries, Finland has very few Muslims,” Bolotowsky noted.

(According to a U.S. State Department report from 2016, Finland has 65,000 Muslims, constituting about 1 percent of the population).

In Western European countries with larger Muslim populations, hostility toward Israel is being adopted increasingly by politicians seeking Muslim votes.

In the Netherlands, the general elections in March saw a radical pro-Islam party win parliament representation for the first time.

The party, DENK, supports a blanket boycott of the Jewish state, and its leader last year refused to shake Netanyahu’s hand during a visit to the Hague.

And in France, the current leader of the Socialist Party, Benoit Hamon, spoke with surprising candor about the need to factor in Muslim sensibilities in devising a policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a 2014 interview, Hamon said that supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state was the Socialists’ “best way to recuperate our electorate in the suburbs and the neighborhoods” — code for Muslim voters — “who did not support the pro-Israeli position taken by President Francois Hollande.”

In Sweden, Israel was popular in ‘67 because it was perceived as the underdog, according to George Braun, the leader of the Jewish community of Gothenburg.

Sears peddles, pulls Palestine shirt

By JTA Sears says it will remove a line of clothing featuring the slogan “Free Palestine” from its website.

The clothing was offered for sale by a another company, Spreadshirt Collection, and included tank tops, t-shirts and hoodies featuring a variety of pro-Palestinian messages.

The clothing was offered for sale through Sears Marketplace, which offers a platform for third-party sellers to offer their wares through websites managed by Sears.

The designs included a clenched fist in the colors of the Palestinian flag and statements opposing the Israeli occupation.

According to a statement from a Sears spokesman, the apparel was pulled from the site based on feedback the company received.

“These items were being sold by a thirdparty seller via the Sears Marketplace,” said the statement, which was sent to JTA Tuesday afternoon.“Given the feedback we’ve received, they are being removed.”

The statement added that Sears felt it had been “unfairly singled out on this issue,” as similar items are available for purchase from other companies, such as Amazon and Walmart.

Amazon sells some of the exact same items from Spreadshirt, as well as a wide range of other pro-Palestinian merchandise.

The Sears statement notes that the company serves “a broad base of customers around the country and around the world,” and that it has 200 employees in Israel.

The clothing promoted on the Sears website sold in the $30-to$50 range.

Terror worries ax event

A pro-Israel event in London has been postponed due to security concerns in the wake of terror attacks in London and Manchester.

Christians United For Israel’s annual “A Night To Honour Israel,” scheduled for June 22, in Westminster, London, was expected to draw more than 1,000 people. A new date was not announced.

The organization said in a statement posted on its website that it had already planned to increase security to “a much higher level than usual,” following recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.

Jewish nurse aids Pale’ mom A Palestinian baby seriously injured in a car accident was breastfed by a Jewish nurse when he refused to take a bottle.

Nurse Ula Ostrowski-Zak nursed the ninemonth-old boy throughout her shift at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital on Friday night, Ynet news reported.

The baby’s family had been in a head-on collision with a bus on Route 60, killing the baby’s father and leaving his mother with a serious head injury. The baby was slightly injured and cried for seven hours in the emergency room while continuing to refuse a bottle, according to the report.

The baby’s aunts asked Ostrowski-Zak to help them find someone to nurse the boy and the nurse reportedly volunteered to do it herself. She nursed the baby five times during the next day. She then posted a request for help with nursing the baby on an Israeli Facebook page for nursing mothers and received many responses from women willing

Launch Giffords ship named A U.S. warship will be officially named Gabrielle Giffords in honor of the Arizona Democratic congresswoman who survived a 2011 gunshot wound to the head. It will be the first Navy ship named after a living woman in 160 years.

Jewish student incident An eighth grade student was suspended from a Colorado middle school for an alleged anti-Semitic incident, even though both the student and the victim are Jewish.

A student at Oberon Middle School in Jefferson County tied another student to a soccer goal post and told him to “burn, Jew, burn.”

The school district learned about the incident through an anonymous school survey that asked students about their experiences during the past school year. After investigating the incident, the district suspended the student they believed to be responsible, according to the CBS Denver affiliate CBS 4.

“You don’t use ethnic slurs, racism isn’t okay in our schools. Any time this happens we are going to take action,” Jefferson County Public Schools spokesperson Diana Wilson told CBS 4.

The channel reported that it had discovered that the boys were friends and both Jewish.

The suspension comes after several allegations of anti-Semitism at the same middle school. One student told the district school board that she has to “constantly deal with anti-Semitism.” She also complained in a public forum about the incidents to Democratic Rep. Jared Polis, according to the report.
