By Rafael Medoff, JNS.org â&#x20AC;&#x153;The great powers had photographs of the railway routes that the trains took toâ&#x20AC;Ś Auschwitz,â&#x20AC;? Pope Francis remarked this week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tell me,â&#x20AC;? he asked, â&#x20AC;&#x153;why didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they bomb them?â&#x20AC;?

The pontiffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s question is not merely a matter of historical curiosity. It raises issues of morality, diplomacy, and American foreign policy with profound implications for our own times.

The reason the Allies had photos of the railways leading to Auschwitz is that throughout the spring of 1944, Allied planes conducted surveillance of the area in preparation for bombing German oil factories, some of which were less than ďŹ ve miles from the gas chambers and crematoria.

Yet when Jewish organizations asked the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration to bomb the railway lines or the death camp itself, U.S. ofďŹ cials replied that such an operation was not feasible because it would require â&#x20AC;&#x153;divertingâ&#x20AC;? planes from the battleďŹ eld.

That was false; those oil factories were very much a part of the battleďŹ eld.

Ironically, the administration did repeatedly divert military resources or change military plans for other non-military objectivesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;just not for the Jews. For example, an Air Force plan to bomb the Japanese city of Kyoto was blocked by Secretary of War Henry Stimson because he admired the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artistic treasures. Assistant Secretary of War McCloy diverted American bombers from striking the German city of Rothenburg in order to spare its famous medieval architecture. Allied ships were diverted to bring thousands of Muslims on a religious pilgrimage to Mecca in 1943â&#x20AC;&#x201D; at the same time U.S. ofďŹ cials were saying no ships were available to take Jewish refugees

The Roosevelt administration opposed calls by Jewish groups to create a government agency to rescue Jewish refugeesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but it established a government agency â&#x20AC;&#x153;for the protection and salvage of artistic and historic monuments in Europe.â&#x20AC;? (That episode was chronicled in the recent George Clooney ďŹ lm, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Monuments Men.â&#x20AC;?) General George Patton even diverted U.S. troops to rescue 150 of the prized Lipizzaner dancing horses in Austria, in April 1945.

Along these same lines, Pope Francis might ask Vatican historians about Allied policy concerning the bombing of Rome. In the summer of 1943, the Allied High Command was anxious to bomb Rome, since it was, as the New York Times put it, â&#x20AC;&#x153;a railway and communications center for Germany and Italian war material.â&#x20AC;? But Roosevelt feared Catholic voters would blame him if religious sites were damaged or if many civilians were harmed, so a slew of changes and restrictions

The bombardiers were ordered to refrain from dropping bombs if there was â&#x20AC;&#x153;any doubtâ&#x20AC;? as to where the bombs would land.

Why the double standard? Why was the Roosevelt administration willing to undertake diversions from standard military policy when medieval artwork, or dancing horses, or Catholic shrines were in danger, butâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;as Pope Francis noted this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;it refused to â&#x20AC;&#x153;divertâ&#x20AC;? a few bombs to strike the railways that were bringing hundreds of thousands of

Jews to their deaths?

Internal memoranda between senior ofďŹ cials of the Roosevelt State Department during 1941-1943â&#x20AC;&#x201D;the peak of the Holocaustâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;provide the tragic answer. One ofďŹ cial, Cavendish Cannon, opposed rescuing Jews from Rumania because it was â&#x20AC;&#x153;likely to bring about new pressure for an asylum in the western hemisphereâ&#x20AC;Ś a migration of the Rumanian Jews would therefore open the question of similar treatment for Jews in Hungary and, by extension, all countries where there has been intense persecution.â&#x20AC;?

His colleague Robert Alexander opposed rescuing Jews on the grounds that it would â&#x20AC;&#x153;take the burden and the curse off Hitler.â&#x20AC;? And R. Borden Reams warned of â&#x20AC;&#x153;the danger that the German government might agree to turn over to the United States and to Great Britain a large number of Jewish refugees.â&#x20AC;? An administration that viewed Jewish refugees as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;curseâ&#x20AC;? and a â&#x20AC;&#x153;burdenâ&#x20AC;? was not going to take any steps that would leave it with large numbers of Jewish refugees on its hands.

Pope Francis made his Auschwitz remark while speaking to a group of young people about why they â&#x20AC;&#x153;ďŹ nd it hard to trust the world.â&#x20AC;? He was rightâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but why cite only the 1940s? Young people today see how the international community lets the architect of the Darfur genocide walk free, accuses Israel of war crimes for defending itself against war crimes, and yawns as the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons against civilians. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no easier to â&#x20AC;&#x153;trust the worldâ&#x20AC;? today than it was during the Holocaust.

By Alon Bernstein NABI SHUAIB SHRINE, Israel (AP) — An unprecedented attack by a mob of Israeli Druze villagers who snatched a wounded Syrian rebel from an Israeli ambulance in the Golan Heights and beat him to death reflects the spiraling anger among the Jewish state’s Druze minority, which has been pushing for the government to do more to help the Syrian Druze caught up in the neighboring country’s civil war.

The Druze, a religious sect that began as an offshoot of Shiite Islam, are among Israel’s most loyal citizens and serve in its military, although those living in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights have a more fraught relationship with the authorities.

But the Druze are also increasingly worried about the plight of their brethren in Syria and have been demanding action from the Israeli government in the wake of a massacre earlier this month of 20 Druze villagers in Syria, killed by Syria’s al-Qaida branch, the Nusra Front.

In the attack late Monday, dozens of Druze villagers swarmed an Israeli military ambulance carrying two wounded Syrian rebels, suspecting they were Islamic militants.

The villagers pulled one of the Syrians from the vehicle and beat him to death. Two Israeli soldiers in the ambulance were also lightly wounded, and the other Syrian was evacuated to an Israeli hospital in critical condition. Earlier Monday, Druze villagers confronted another ambulance they believed was transporting wounded Syrian militants but that incident was quickly defused.

The Israeli Druze have been angered by the Israeli government’s policy of extending medical aid to wounded Syrian rebels, who are fighting against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government — an archenemy of Israel. They suspect that some of those treated in Israel have been Islamic militants, such as those behind the massacre of the Druze in the Syrian province of Idlib.

into Israel on Monday night were civilians.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss military actions with the media.

Israel’s estimated 130,000 Druze live mostly in the north of the country, where some have recently been taking to the streets, demanding more decisive action to help the Syrian Druze. Some have called for Israel to provide weapons and air support; others have proposed that thousands of Syrian Druze be allowed to take shelter inside Israel, if necessary, or that they themselves be allowed to cross the border and fight on behalf of the Syrian Druze.

“The Israeli state knows how to take care of its interest, and its interest in this case is not to let the Druze community be in a situation of genocide,” said Majali Wehbe, a former Druze member of Knesset.

Convening for an emergency meeting, the Druze leadership in Israel condemned the mob attack in the Golan.

Israeli police said “a mass” of people had attacked the ambulance and that the crowd threw stones at the vehicle. Video footage taken shortly after the incident showed an ambulance with its windshield smashed and Israeli forces keeping guard near a cordonedoff area.

The Israeli government insists it will not allow the Druze in Syria to be massacred, but has stopped short of definitive action, maintaining its policy of non-intervention in the conflict next door.

Fighting occasionally does spillover and Israel has responded. It has also carried out a number of strikes on weapons convoys or caches it believes were destined to its enemy Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Lebanese militant

group has sided with Assad’s troops in the civil war.

Analyst Stephane Cohen, a former liaison between the Israeli military and United Nations peacekeeping forces, said Israel has treated more than 1,600 Syrians since the conflict began in 2011. The wounded, a mix of civilians and rebels fighting the area, arrive at the frontier and Israeli military doctors pick them up for treatment at Israeli hospitals.

The Druze behind Monday’s attack on the wounded Syrians are part of the 22,000 members of the community who live in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. They have continued to identify themselves as Syrians, even after decades of Israeli rule that has seen them become fluent in Hebrew and integrated in Israeli society.

Few of the Golan Druze have taken Israeli citizenship — an option they were offered after Israel annexed the territory in 1981 — and have mostly backed Assad’s government, at least in public.

They stand in contrast to other, loyalist Druze in Israel who have a particularly tight bond with Jews that dates even farther back than helping them win independence in 1948. The Druze revere Jethro, the father-inlaw of Moses, whose tomb in northern Israel is one of their most sacred sites.

In recent days the community has enjoyed widespread solidarity from other Israelis — though that has partially been replaced by outrage after the attacks on military ambulances. Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon called the attack a “lynch” while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu harshly condemned it and invited Druze leaders to a meeting on Wednesday in a bid to lower tensions.

“We will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands. We will not allow anyone to disrupt Israeli soldiers in their missions,” Netanyahu said. “We will locate those who carried out this mob killing and bring them to justice. We are a country of law and are not a part of the anarchy that is spreading around us.”

“Perspectives on Zionism,” which was scheduled to be taught by self-proclaimed “post-Zionist” and “Nakba Jew-in-law” George Smith, was nixed due to no enrollment, according to a June 10 announcement.

Yet the catalyst behind the cancelled course—Smith, a tenured biology professor who pushed for a curriculum that the instructor himself said would have included works by anti-Zionist authors such as Ilan Pappé, who has accused Israel of ethnic cleansing— is very much active.

The pro-Israel community welcomed the news of the course’s cancellation.

“I can now walk away with the knowledge that there is no interest among students [at MU] to take biased classes like Smith’s,” said Destiny G. Albritton, former president of MU’s Christians United for Israel (CUFI) campus chapter.

“We salute the MU administration for upholding academic standards and being a model other schools can emulate,” Roz Rothstein, CEO of the Israel education organization StandWithUs, said.

Smith has written dozens of columns and

letters to the editor in the local and campus newspapers in Columbia, Mo., equating Israel’s Independence Day with a Palestinian version of Holocaust Remembrance Day. He uses phrases such as “Zionist mythology” and accuses Israel of “colonization of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.” He shows up at pro-Israel events and heckles the speakers.

Earlier this year, when 25-year-old Israel Defense Forces reservist Hen Mazzig spoke at MU as part of the StandWithUs Israeli Soldiers Tour of the Midwest, Smith heckled him from the audience with hostile questions and accusations. “[He said], ‘Why do you kill Palestinians?

Area spiritual leader Rabbi Yossi Feintuch said Smith showed up to a speech by an American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) representative at his synagogue and proceeded to harass the speaker, advocating that Iran should achieve nuclear

independence. CUFI’s Albritton noted that Smith has attended organizational meetings and interrupted, using “intimidation tactics” to get his point across.

Smith has used his tenure—he has worked at MU for 30 years—to bring in anti-Israel speakers with university funding. Recently, six university departments sponsored a talk by author Saree Makdisi, who has said it is more important to eliminate the Jewish state than to create a Palestinian one.

“He uses his reputation to get several departmental sponsors,” Albritton told JNS. org. “But when Students Supporting Israel or CUFI asks these same departments to co-

sponsor events, we wither don’t hear back or we hear, ‘we cannot help you.’ It’s not fair.”

But Smith disagrees.

“I do go to pro-Zionist meetings, but I don’t disrupt. I am just vocal with my questions,” he told JNS.org. “People have freedom of speech. Our university does not sensor our political speech—or any other kind of speech.”

When one reads about MU in the media, it’s usually about the black-and-gold Tigers football team, the stellar reputation of the school’s journalism school, or as a stopping point and party hub situated between the cities of St. Louis and Kansas City.

“The University of Missouri is not a hot bed of anti-Semitism or BDS (the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement),” Karen Aroesty, Missouri/Southern Illinois regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, told JNS.org. Until recently, the impact Smith had on campus was, in Aroesty’s words, “minimal.”

ment said it would work to deport the Jordanian-born Palestinian to the country of his choice after he ďŹ nished serving his sentence on murder and conspiracy charges.

But efforts to deport Rashed have stalled amid diplomatic complications since his March 2013 release from prison. He remains at an immigration detention facility in Batavia, New York, and his lawyer has complained to a judge that the government appears to have failed to satisfy its end of the plea deal.

At a court hearing last month in Washington, Justice Department lawyer Christopher Dempsey said the government was developing a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Plan Bâ&#x20AC;? strategy to remove Rashed from the country. The details of that plan were not publicly disclosed in court, and lawyers involved in the case have declined to discuss it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The government wants him out of here, and would love it if we could effect his removal,â&#x20AC;? Dempsey said, according to a hearing transcript obtained by the Associated Press.

The AP reported in November, based on documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, that Rashed had requested to be sent to the West Bank, where he has family, and that the Obama administration sought Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s permission to send him there via a bridge connecting the territory with Jordan. Israel captured the West Bank in 1967 and controls access into and out of the territory.

But the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a June 2013 memo that Rashedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Palestinian passport and birth certiďŹ cate contained â&#x20AC;&#x153;material discrepanciesâ&#x20AC;? about his date and place of birth.

Dempsey said in court that even after the U.S. ďŹ xed the problem and submitted a correct passport, Israel demanded that Rashed be added to a Palestinian population registry â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a step he said was still in progress. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But we do have a Plan B to remove him, if we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get him to the West Bank, to get him to a second location,â&#x20AC;? Dempsey said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The problem is we hit a snag with that operation, but it is a temporary thing, not a permanent obstruction. So that will happen. It is just not imminent, but it is certainly foreseeable.â&#x20AC;?

Rashed was a onetime top lieutenant to Abu Ibrahim, a Palestinian bomb maker who formed 15 May â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a terrorist faction that took responsibility for several attacks in the 1980s â&#x20AC;&#x201D; who was known for making sophisticated plastic explosives that could be smuggled in bags and suitcases. Abu Ibrahim, also known as Husayn Muhammad Al-Umari, remains on the FBIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s list of most wanted terrorists and was indicted in 1987 in the U.S. along with Rashed.

The attack on the Pan Am jetliner was set in motion when Rashed, on a ďŹ&#x201A;ight to Japan, tucked a bomb beneath a seat cushion, pulled the pin, engaged a timer and then disembarked when his ďŹ&#x201A;ight landed in Tokyo.

The device exploded as the plane continued on to Honolulu, killing a 16-year-old boy who occupied the same seat on the ďŹ&#x201A;ightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next leg.

Rashed was arrested in Greece in 1988 with a phony passport and implicated in the bomb attack. He was prosecuted in that country and released in 1996, but was arrested in 1998 by U.S. authorities in another country and brought to Washington for prosecution.

He pleaded guilty in 2002 and was released from prison in 2013, after roughly 25 years behind bars in both Greece and the U.S.

Following an incident in the Chabad Center of the Five Towns during kiddush last Shabbos, which led to one manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arrest, Rabbi Zalman Wolowik communicated with his congregants about its circumstances, and scheduled a meeting on child safety â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Staying Safe in an Unsafe Worldâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that will be open to the entire community on Monday evening. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to make you aware of an incident that occurred this past Shabbos at

our Chabad Center, which highlights the need for continuous discussion about child safety,â&#x20AC;? Rabbi Wolowik wrote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A seven-year old girl attending our weekly kiddush fell asleep in a chair at the kiddush. An acquaintance of the girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father asked the girl if she would like to nap in his car. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He reportedly told the girl that her father had given permission for her to sleep in his car. The girl followed the

man to the car where she fell asleep.

The man locked the car doors with the girl inside and returned to the Chabad Center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The father and I were notiďŹ ed of the matter, and, with great thanks to Hashem, the girl was found unharmed in the car. Upon hearing of the incident, Chabad called the police. When it was learned that the man did not in fact ask the girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father for permission to take

the girl, the man was arrested by Nassau County police. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This incident reminds us of the need for discussion about our childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety.â&#x20AC;?

Staff members who are allowed to leave camp should only take rides from within the camp or outside the camp with people who they can be certain are trustworthy people. Many camps arrange shuttle rides for their staff at ďŹ xed hours out and back to camp. Such a policy is commendable.

Now that the summer is ofďŹ cially upon us, our kids will be scattering all over the world in the coming weeks. I am sharing some points I believe are worth noting when anticipating many summer activities we and/or our children might engage in. The ďŹ rst set of points concern safety concerns many of us are aware of, along with some reminders I think of every summer on account of sundry items that have caught my attention over the years. Please forgive me if I am saying things to you that you already know. When it comes to safety, a friendly reminder is appropriate. This is essentially the same note as last year with a few added comments.

The second set of points concerns our summer attitudes towards Sanctity and Kedusha. On a metaphysical level our eternal values are as important as our temporal values.

6XQVFUHHQ Just about every study and article about the dangers of the sun recommends putting sunscreen on exposed parts of the body, especially when one will be outdoors for a few hours. When in the sun for extended periods, heads should be covered! %LNH +HOPHWV Biking accidents are never good for riders, but while most injuries have a better chance of recovery, brain injuries donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have such luxuries. Please wear helmets - be a role model for the children of our community - and insist that kids do too, even when biking on your block +\GUDWLRQ We are not always aware how much the heat or humidity affects us. In general, healthy consumption of water is at least 80 oz a day. On hot days spent outdoors, even more is recommended. It is important to remember to drink even when you are doing a water activity. Getting wet does not keep your body hydrated. If you are taking a long plane ďŹ&#x201A;ight, be sure to drink a good quantity of water.

1DWXUH SUHFDXWLRQV Every summer brings with it warnings of ticks that may carry diseases. Appropriate clothing, sprays, and general awareness of what to look for - either in the tick itself or if you are bitten - are all important to bear in mind.In the Northeast USA use appropriate precautions and awareness to avoid Lyme disease.

D 3ODQWV DQG ZLOGOLIH When in the great outdoors, we come in contact with the beauty, but also the potential dangers of nature. Know what kinds of animals may be in your vicinity. Know what kinds of plants - whether dangerous by contact alone or through ingestion - are to be avoided.

Snakes are a particular issue in Israel this summer. There are poisonous snakes. A few precautions are in order. Do not hike in the dark. Do not step or place hands into covered areas where you cannot see what is beneath the covering. Snakes can also be found in water/swimming holes or lakes. Doors should always be closed and windows must have screens. If bitten, sit down, call for an emergency ambulance and get to the nearest hospital ASAP. A poisonous bite will include genuine swelling at the spot of the bite. It is important not to

lose oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cool and not to be active after a bite. Do not tie a tourniquet, or make an incision or suction the bite.

E $OOHUJLHV I always carry Benadryl with me when I travel or hike. People can get allergic reactions from insect and bee bites even if they have no history of having a reaction. Sometimes the reaction can be dangerously severe. Ask your physician what is the best precaution for you. +LNLQJ Hikers should stick to marked trails. Always have a map. And hike safely. Every year Israeli news reports include too many stories of accidents and tragedies involving people unfamiliar with the desert who go hiking with no plan, map, or communication. Death by dehydration and exposure to the elements is usually the diagnosis. Never hike alone and always have a reliable means of communication with you in case of emergency.

'ULYLQJ LQ WKH FRXQWU\ Relatively inexperienced drivers (kids under 21) must be reminded that the Catskills and Poconos are full of one-lane, challenging roads. Extra care should be taken on these roads â&#x20AC;&#x201D; day and night â&#x20AC;&#x201D; especially with young drivers who (percentage-wise) tend to be more reckless. Responsible driving will help prevent the fatalities we unfortunately hear about every summer. :DWHU 6DIHW\ Please use every safety precaution with home pools. No one should swim without a responsible and capable person supervising. Especially small children.

Pool safety with young children is paramount. There is no

7]QLXW We are Orthodox Jews living in a very open society and we are exposed to the accepted norms of that society. Our standards of â&#x20AC;&#x153;kedoshim tihiyoo,â&#x20AC;? to be a holy people, often clash with the reality around us. Being a â&#x20AC;&#x153;holy peopleâ&#x20AC;? requires us to be separate and different in our behavior in general and in the choices we make in our dress. This applies to both men and women. For leisure time and even for swimming, there are appropriate options available that preserve our sense of modesty when in the company of friends.

As the schools our children attend have dress codes, let those guidelines essentially determine how both parents and children choose to observe a standard of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;tzniutâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in dress, at least as far as how we cover our arms, legs, and torso. This is a standard we can all appreciate and respect. Summer footwear (sandals, socks, etc) are a matter of personal choice which I am not addressing here. I do think, that there is room in the halacha to allow people to wear comfortable footwear in warm and hot weather.

There are both objective standards of tzniut and subjective standards. But everyone has some concept of what is not appropriate. It is a challenging task. But we must elevate ourselves in the same way that we sacriďŹ ce to keep Kosher and to observe Shabbat.

5HOLJLRXV VWDQGDUGV ZKHQ RQ YDFDWLRQ Daily prayers, tzitzit, teďŹ llin, kashrut, choice of entertainment, and full Shabbat observance is a sine qua non for the Orthodox family. An accepted halakhic practice, for example, is not to swim on Shabbat! Just as our community does not condone picking â&#x20AC;&#x153;the kosher item in a non-kosher menu,â&#x20AC;? we must live by the same standards we live by at home even when we are on vacation, away from anyone who knows us. We may go on vacation from the pressures of our daily routines, but there is no vacation from our covenant with HASHEM. Parents should set a high bar for themselves and their children. CONSISTENCY IS A SPECIAL GIFT WE CAN GIVE OUR CHILDREN! May we be blessed to be avenues of Kiddush Hashem and the sanctiďŹ cation of G-dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name in all that we do.

By Rafael Medoff, JNS.org The world-famous Louvre art museum stands accused of discriminating against Israeli students, after being exposed by some clever amateur investigative journalism that echoes a 1940s incident involving the father of Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current prime minister.

The episode began last month when Prof.

Sefy Hendler, who teaches art history at Tel Aviv University, contacted the Louvreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reservation department to arrange tours for 12 of his students during their trip to Paris in late June. Hendler proposed three different dates that his students would be available, but was turned down for all three. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It surprised me that a place that receives nine million visitors a year didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ nd room for us â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even though we asked to tour in the middle of the week,â&#x20AC;? Hendler told the Israeli newspaper Haâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;aretz.

Greenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secretary has no trouble making a reservation for Greenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;under that nameâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; and his ďŹ ancĂŠ for their honeymoon weekend at a posh New England resort hotel. But when Green subsequently calls the hotel, the proprietor realizes that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewish and tells him that there are â&#x20AC;&#x153;no rooms available.â&#x20AC;? The original reservation was made by mistake by â&#x20AC;&#x153;a new clerk,â&#x20AC;? the hotel manager insists.

The Louvreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cancellation also brings to mind a peculiar incident involving the late scholar and Zionist activist Prof. Benzion Netanyahu, the father of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. When I interviewed him some years ago, Prof. Netanyahu mentioned some of the inconveniences he ex-

This time the Louvre suddenly had space availableâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;on one of the same dates that were supposedly booked solid when Hendler had identiďŹ ed himself as Israeli.

The same thing happened when Hendler tried to book tours for his students at the Sainte-Chappele, a 13th-century royal chapel in central Paris that is famous for its Gothic architecture and stained-glass windows.

Spokespeople for the Louvre blamed it all on a computer error. The Sainte-Chappele administration has admitted â&#x20AC;&#x153;irregularitiesâ&#x20AC;? in the handling of the Tel Aviv students, but would not concede discrimination. Francois Heilbronn, president of the French Friends of Tel Aviv University, has rejected the Louvreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s explanation, as has Prof. Hendler, who said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear to me that when you say no to Israelis, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a discriminatory and racist act.â&#x20AC;?

The episode may remind some of an incident in Laura Z. Hobsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous novel â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gentlemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Agreement,â&#x20AC;? a number-one New York Times bestseller in 1947 that was later made into a movie starring Gregory

perienced in the United States in the 1940s because of his name, which was entirely unfamiliar to American ears. He would, for example, receive mail addressed to him as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mr. Natan Yahuâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mr. Hu.â&#x20AC;?

But most jarring was what happened when he telephoned a resort in upstate New York in 1942, to make reservations for the weekend for himself and his wife. When Netanyahu stated his name, the hotel clerk said no rooms were available. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But my wife, Cela, became suspicious and called back a little while later, using a Gentile-sounding name,â&#x20AC;? he told me. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Suddenly there were plenty of rooms available. The problem was that they thought we were Japaneseâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and this was just a few months after Pearl Harbor.â&#x20AC;?

Blatant social discrimination against minorities should be a thing of the past in enlightened society. One hopes the behavior of the Louvre and the Sainte-Chappele does not indicate that such bigotry has returned, with Israelis as the new targets.

Rocket for the 4th! Jerry’s stories keep giving JUDY JOSZEF WHO’S IN THE KITCHEN

I

t’s been almost three years that I’ve been writing this column. At first it was just a recipe and a paragraph or two about the origins of the recipe or a humorous story to go with it.

One day when I was at a loss about what to write about, I took a chance and wrote about the birthday party my husband had when he was six years old, which included the three friends he was able to invite, gefilte fish, roast, kishka, kugels, rugalach and shlishkes. Add to that about 15 “greenas” (European-born) relatives dressed in shabbos attire, Moishe Oysher playing on the victrola and needless to say, it was hysterical. Question was, would readers enjoy it, or would they think it was inappropriate. Thankfully people said loved it and before I knew it, Jerry would come home from shul and rattle off the names of men in his section who loved the article. OK, he didn’t rattle off the names, it was more like, “Judy, so many people loved your article,” Jerry reported.

Curious, I asked “who?” He went on to explain it was men who sat near him in shul. He tried to describe them, but that didn’t work.

He knew one was a lawyer, one owned a plumbing company, wasn’t sure what the third guy did but he was tall, funny and friendly and another was really nice and his wife and mother-in-law loved the column as well.

The following week, when he came home from shul, he had regards from more people

who like the column, and yes no names to go with compliments. I felt like I was on a game show and had to guess the names with useless facts that Jerry gave me about them.

I’m glad to say that three years later, Jerry knows everyone’s name and loves their company in shul. Thanks for the compliments Sharon and Gideon Bari and Mrs. Feit. You too Mitchell Markowitz, Howie Lasky and Eric Hack.

Shout out also to Harvey Scheff, known as a great YU basketball player that Jerry always admired and whom he met at a recent dinner honoring coach Johnny Halpert. I’m honored that not only his friends, but that Jerry’s basketball cronies follow my column as well.

As time went on, people would ask to hear more of Jerry’s stories. People asked if I made them up, many not believing that some of it actually happened. But it did, all of it.

Yes Jerry split his pants at a wedding and returned to he dance floor in chef pants that he borrowed from a chef in the kitchen who was 5’2” (Jerry is 6’1”).

Yes, he talked his mom into not having a chicken schected to take home for dinner. Instead he took it home as a pet and pleaded with it to make on the newspaper and not all over the house, or he would have to go back.

After three weeks of having it ride on his lap while he was on his tricycle and taking walks with it in the street, the chicken had to go back — and, yes, they had chicken for dinner that night, or so the story goes.

And yes, his parrot spoke a perfect Yiddish, and wished everyone a good shabbos and Yom Tov. Best of all, his dad actually.

And the kids believed that the mikvah in a Catskills hotel was actually a private indoor

swimming pool. Complete with bathing suits, balls of various sizes and tubes, they splashed around until the men waiting on line to get in begged them to leave. On the way out Jerry told the people on line that the pool was OK but they would like Grossinger’s pool much better. You can’t make this stuff up.

I wrote a few funny articles about my family and growing up, but they paled in comparison to the stories about Jerry and his family. And now, after three years, I think I’ve exhausted just about every funny incident involving Jerry. I have thought about retiring because each week it gets harder and harder to come up with fresh ideas, and then I bump into people who tell me how much they love my column and I think, OK, maybe just a few more months.

Next week might be easier as Jerry’s kids and grandkids are coming in to visit from Israel. Each day, new packages arrive.

Last year was the year of the water balloon launchers (which resembled medieval roman

catapults) and water guns, and when I say water guns I mean dozens of them. He gets so excited with them, that when our adult friends come over he takes them out to show how high and how far they shoot. This year seems to be the year of the balloon rockets promising to shoot hundreds of feet higher than the launchers.

Hopefully they will all enjoy fun times and create new stories to tell. Stay tuned.

Pomegranate Rocket Salad Ingredients: 6 cups arugula Seeds only from one pomegranate Kosher salt and pepper to taste 3/4 cup olive oil 1 Tbs red wine vinegar Juice of 1/2 lemon 1 shallot sliced 1/4 cup pomegranate molasses 1/4 toasted walnuts 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 tbs honey Rinse and pat dry the arugula, set aside Pomegranate Vinaigrette: Mix molasses, lemon juice and vinegar.

Slowly drizzle in olive oil and whisk to emulsify. Season with pepper and salt. Toss salad ingredients together and dress with vinaigrette right before serving.

Judea-Samaria boycott and the mark of Cain TEHILLA R. GOLDBERG VIEW FROM CENTRAL PARK

M

y first reaction to the latest controversial Meretz-sponsored bill in the Israeli parliament was, mark of Cain.

The original meaning of the phrase in Genesis is a sign of safety and protection for Cain, a warning to others that killing will him provoke the vengeance of G-d, that if Cain is harmed it will only boomerang sevenfold. Over time, and throughout Christian history, due to prevalent anti-Semitism, the phrase was interpreted negatively and in today’s parlance has come to mean a mark of shame.

Zahava Gal-On of the left-wing Meretz party has proposed a bill that all would require food manufacturers to mark where their product was made, distinguishing between Israel and Judea and Samaria, the

West Bank, as if that was not part of Israel.

I have heard responses from the settlement community, sarcastically thanking GalOn for helping them out. Now they will know how to limit their purchases strictly to products manufactured in the West Bank. This reversal in interpretation of the purpose of the bill is not the response shared by those in the leadership, who can’t afford the luxury of coping humorously with very serious situation.

While Israel is faced with BDS pressure from the outside, now it has reached the point where this destructive pressure is being mounted from the inside as well.

If politically left-leaning Israelis prefer not to purchase products manufactured in the West Bank, so be it. The economic wisdom of that for both Israelis and Palestinians is, at best, questionable, but let people decide for themselves in their personal lives. It’s their business.

But to suggest formalizing a divide in the country; to suggest officially marking products — which, let’s face it, is only one step

likes it or not, the West Bank is part of Israel.

It is Israel.

Unlike the original meaning of the phrase “Mark of Cain” — a sign of protection — should Gal-On’s unsettling suggestion pass in the Knesset, it would only nurture the current, negative meaning of the phrase, leading not only to the marking of products, but possibly to the marking of people.

I admit, it can sound absurd to evoke the mark of the yellow fabric Star of David and the scripted black Jude scrawled at its center.

Yet, as a people who have literally suffered the mark of society in the recent past, is it not a leap to remind Gal-On of this collective mark of pain, of the danger of the “Mark of Cain.”

I ask myself, how does one reach the point where marking people is acceptable? Where is the starting point of that?

Could it possibly lie in the seemingly harmless act of a manufacturer formally marking the label of a bottle of wine?

With ‘Ally,’ Oren lifts veil on rift

away from formally marking people —at a time when the threat of BDS is real, is downright disturbing. It gives BDS credibility.

Replace for a moment marking products manufactured by settlers in the West Bank with marking Arab produce in the territories.

It is simply outrageous.

Gal-On claims that what is outrageous here is the “occupation” itself, and that her suggestion of labeling products is a painful consequence of that policy and reality. In other words, labeling is a symptom and not the root of the problem.

It’s very compartmentalized of Gal-On to view Israel in such a fractured way, as if she is literally drawing the line between the good guys and the bad guys within Israel. This simplistic approach is rather foolish because, from a pragmatic point of view, it will only succeed in crippling all of Israel. The narrow economic paralysis of the West Bank she is after is not what will be manifested. Her proposed bill could lead to a total economic collapse.

t’s safe to say that in the coming weeks, you’ll be reading a great deal about the new memoir, “Ally,” authored by Israel’s former ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren.

Oren spent the years 2009–13 as Israel’s envoy in Washington. Once a dual national of both the U.S. and Israel, the New Jerseyraised Oren had to surrender his U.S. passport at the American Embassy in Tel Aviv before taking up his ambassadorial post—an emotionally wrenching episode that he describes in detail. Oren’s complicated identity as an American and an Israeli is a theme that runs throughout the book, and his treatment of this subject is a welcome tonic to the dreary and rather smelly charges of “dual loyalty” that too often accompany examinations of the relationship that Jews in the diaspora have with the Jewish state.

The main attraction of the book, of course, is its account of the Obama administration’s Middle East policies, and Oren’s candor has already gotten him into trouble. Dan Shapiro, the current U.S. ambassador in Israel, who makes several appearances in Oren’s memoir, this week told Israel’s Army Radio that “Ally” is “an imaginary account of what happened,” going on to belittle Oren for having, as a mere ambassador, a “limited point of view into ongoing efforts. What he wrote does not reflect the truth.”

This is a serious charge, and it remains to be seen if Shapiro will attempt to substantiate it. In the meantime, it should be pointed out that what makes “Ally” such a fascinating read is that it provides, from Oren’s perspective, a detailed sense of the bitter atmosphere in both Washington and Jerusalem that underlay diplomatic efforts on the issues we are all intimately familiar with, from the negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program to the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Unlike other diplomats, Oren didn’t wait 20 years to publish his story—most of the key individuals in his book, including President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, are still in power, and the bilateral tensions which Oren agonizingly explains

haven’t been lessened since his departure from Israel’s Washington embassy. Diplomats aren’t supposed to be this transparent, which is why Oren will be regarded in many circles as a man who broke “omerta,” the code of silence which ensures that us ordinary mortals are kept in the dark about what our leaders are saying in private.

While it’s true that Obama comes in for heavy criticism, Oren rubbishes the claim that the president is “anti-Israel.” The reality is more complex; as Oren writes, “the Israel [Obama] cared about was also the Israel whose interests he believed he understood better than its own citizens.” One might add that this paternalistic approach has informed Obama’s stance on the entire region, resulting in a sly policy that presents itself to Americans as a much-desired withdrawal from the Middle East’s endless bloodshed while, at the same time, fundamentally redistributing the region’s balance of power in favor of Iran, whose rulers have spent almost 40 years chanting “Death to America.”

The reader is struck, reading Oren’s analysis of Obama’s policy speeches, by how often the president has used the phrase “I’m not naive”—surely a case, as Shakespeare might have put it, of “our elected leader doth

protest too much.” On a visit to Turkey in April 2009—his first visit abroad—Obama emphasized his personal regard for that country’s irascible leader, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, pointedly adding “I’m not naive.” He reached for this formulation again in an address to the U.N. General Assembly the following September, in which he articulated the demand for a “contiguous” Palestinian state. “I’m not naive,” Oren quotes the president saying, “but all of us must decide whether we are serious about peace or whether we will lend it lip service.”

“All of us,” as Oren’s book makes clear, was really code for “Israel,” and, specifically, Netanyahu. The fork-tongued Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, never experienced the same degree of diplomatic pressure from the Americans, and nor was he subjected to the kind of ugly whispering campaigns that have targeted Netanyahu.

Ironically, though, Obama’s zeal to resolve the Palestinian question by insisting on the 1967 lines as the border between two sovereign states actually boxed in the Palestinian leader. Despite Abbas’s apparent willingness “to concede parts of the West Bank and East Jerusalem to Israel,” Oren says, “the Continued on page 21

And there is no part of the story of his life in the Torah that is more confounding and mysterious than the story, in this week’s portion Chukat, of his hitting the rock and consequently being denied entry into the Promised Land.

But what went wrong? The people arrive at the desert of Tzin and have no water, so they complain to Moshe, because that is what you do when you are Jews in the desert with no water (Bamidbar 20:1-13). It’s exactly what they had done in the past; not long after the splitting of the Red Sea they arrive at Refidim and have no water, and complain to Moshe (Shemot 17:1-7). Then as now, Moshe takes his staff and hits the rock and presto!

Why does G-d this time punish Moshe and Aaron, preventing them from entering the land of Israel?

A careful look at the verse will note that Hashem does not say they cannot enter the land of Israel, but rather that they will not lead the Jewish people home; at issue here is leadership.

The commentaries many different explanations for what mistake Moshe made here, precisely because it is not at all clear, especially given that Moshe is essentially following a previously tested and proved strategy. Some (Rashi) suggest he was meant to

speak to the rock which would have been more powerful than hitting it, while others (the Ramban) suggest that the way in which Moshe seems to berate the people (v. 9): “Shimu na ha morim” (listen now you rebels!) was the problem; Moshe got angry.

It is worth noting that this story actually takes place in the 40th year, when Moshe’s expectations might have been different.

Nonetheless, it seems strange that Hashem wants Moshe to speak to the rock and yet enjoins him to take the staff, which was used previously to hit the rock. If Moshe was only meant to speak to the rock, why was he taking the staff?

And Aaron’s role here is unclear. The people complain to Moshe (v.3), yet Aaron joins Moshe (v. 6) in running to G-d (to the tent of meeting); then G-d tells Moshe to take Aaron with him (v.8), and Aaron goes along (v.10) but although he does not actually say or do anything (v. 12) he is equally punished!

Perhaps one detail seems most overlooked and that might shed an entirely different light on this story. Hashem tells Moshe to take with him (v. 9) the mateh mi’lifnei Hashem (the staff from Before G-d).

But which staff is this? In fact, at the end of last week’s portion (though chronologically 38 years earlier) Hashem commands Moshe to place the staff of Aaron before the Ark in the tabernacle (see 17: 24-25), so maybe Hashem is telling Moshe to take Aaron’s staff with him! This might also explain why Aaron is along for the ride.

If this is true, we need to understand the purpose of Aaron’s staff being in the tabernacle in order to understand why it should be taken along.

Hashem (ibid v. 25) tells Moshe, after the rebellion of Korach and the miracle of the flowering of Aaron’s staff (demonstrating Aaron to be the true High Priest), that he should place the miraculous staff of Aaron before the Ark (called the Eidut in the Torah) “le’ot li’vnei Meri” (as a sign for rebellious ones), which is the exact term (v. 9), “shimu na ha morim” (Listen now you rebels!), that Moshe uses in berating the people!

Was it the energy that this staff represented that was meant to be the solution to the conflict? n last week’s portion of Korach, after Korach and his followers are swallowed by the earth and/or burned by fire, one would have expected the rebellion to be over. And yet, it is precisely then that Hashem tells Moshe to gather the staffs of the different tribal leaders, setting the stage for the miraculous blossoming of Aaron’s staff and assuring his place in Jewish leadership. Why wasn’t the earthquake and firestorm enough to end the conflict?

Perhaps, as Rabbi Jonathan Sacks suggests in one of his posts, the Torah is trying to teach us that we don’t really solve conflicts with violence; true conflict resolution requires dialogue. Even after Korach is swallowed up by earthquake, the people are still complaining and rebellious (Bamidbar 17:6).

Real conflict resolution must be with the other and not at the expense of the other.

But considering that Korach’s rebellion took place during the second year in the desert, whereas this week’s story is a full 38 years later, the blossoming of the staff obviously worked; there seems to have been no conflict and no complaining for 38 years.

The staffs are left in the tent of meeting overnight, implying successful conflict resolution to be gradual. And the miracle is not the bombastic earth shattering fire from heaven or powerful earthquake, but rather an almost natural blossoming of a flower, in Aaron’s staff, surrounded by all the other staffs, implying that real conflict resolution must be with the other and not at the expense of the other, and it must be made to seem the almost natural solution, rather than one that is imposed.

Perhaps in this week’s story, a new generation, preparing to enter and conquer land of Israel, needed to learn that conquest does not solve problems, though it may sometimes create opportunities. And wars, even when they must be fought, are not solutions but will always create new challenges.

Moshe, in approaching a recurring problem and applying an old tested method to its solution, may be demonstrating that new generations need new approaches. Maybe Moshe and Aaron did not necessarily do anything wrong per se, but it was nonetheless time for them to step aside.

One wonders whether some of our current leaders are approaching recurring problems and applying old tested methodologies, without realizing that this new generation needs a different approach and perhaps even new leadership. That is a discussion for another day (the Shabbat table, perhaps).

amidbar 21:5-8 contains what might be the quickest sin, punishment, retribution and repentant turnaround in all of the Torah.

“The people spoke out against G-d and Moses, ‘Why did you take us out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread and no water! We are getting disgusted with this wasteless/insubstantial food.’ G-d sent poisonous snakes against the people, and when they began biting the people, a number of Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned by speaking against G-d and you. Pray to G-d, and have Him take the snakes away from us’.”

G-d then gives Moshe the solution for those who have been bitten: a copper snake raised on a pole (an international symbol for pharmacy), for people to gaze upon in order to be healed (this is a simplistic understanding of how the snake “worked”).

Chasam Sofer asks, why now, after 40 years in the wilderness, are the people complaining about the manna? To further his question, we can wonder how the new generation — most of them born and grown up

in the wilderness, where this is the only reality they’ve known — could they complain that the manna is just absorbed in the body; they’ve never experienced waste-producing food!

He suggests that once they encountered other nations, and engaged with them in trade, they discovered the foods the Edomites (and others) ate, and had their first major exposure to the digestive system. However, the wheat they may have eaten did not produce waste, so they felt the manna had destroyed their bodies.

Rabbenu Bachaye notes that the whole purpose of the manna while they were traveling was to train them to have trust and faith in G-d. The moment they spoke falsehoods about G-d, they were punished with snakes, the symbol of speaking falsehoods (think Garden of Eden). (He quotes the Medrash Tanchuma that the punishment of snakes measure for measure in a different way: the snake who eats anything and it all tastes the same to him will come and punish those who complain about eating the one thing that has many possible flavors.)

Rabbi Abraham Sabba (Tzror Hamor)

suggests that their immediate response to the snakes of “We have sinned” brought immediate atonement for their sin. That G-d told Moshe to create a Saraph (5:8), even though Moshe made a Nachash (5:9) (both words seem to refer to a snake image) indicates that G-d’s intent was for the copper snake to serve as a healer for their ailments of the soul (refuat ha’nefesh).

No matter what the copper snake was meant to heal, and no matter the reason for the complaints at this time, the fact remains that the whole ordeal seems to begin and end very quickly. Even though the complaint about the manna is understandable to us in 20/20 hindsight, the complaint about water makes no sense. Didn’t they see what just happened a chapter ago when they complained about water?

Could it be that they’re complaining about the new reality which will soon be upon them, that they’re going to have to shlep water and actually work hard to get the food they need once the manna runs out and the well runs dry?

It’s hard to know, as the Torah doesn’t

give us much background to the complaining. But one thing is clear. When the guilty are punished with a swift retribution from G-d, without conversations or confrontations, without raised voices and ire between sides, an understanding is quickly reached.

Note how the Torah does not tell us that their food situation or water situation changed or improved. The tale concludes with the people owning up to their sin and with Moshe building the copper snake to help heal those who were bitten. Then they move on to their next destination.

While I am not suggesting an overhaul of the justice system in this country (though with DNA testing, we often hear stories of innocent people sitting on death row for years), there are times — such as in the recent horrific shooting in the Charleston, S.C church, as well as other mass shootings in the country — where the perpetrator is known, there are multiple witnesses, and the blood is on his hands, where swift punishment would drive the message home.

It worked in the Torah: For the first time, the people immediately admit their guilt, and they don’t even get what they want!

Alas, G-d is the only One Who can be so sure. Until such a time when He chooses to punish accordingly again, we can marvel at how quickly the lesson is learned, and hope that in our own human way we can learn from His incredible example.

suggests that their immediate response to the snakes of “We have sinned” brought immediate atonement for their sin. That G-d told Moshe to create a Saraph (5:8), even though Moshe made a Nachash (5:9) (both words seem to refer to a snake image) indicates that G-d’s intent was for the copper snake to serve as a healer for their ailments of the soul (refuat ha’nefesh).

No matter what the copper snake was meant to heal, and no matter the reason for the complaints at this time, the fact remains that the whole ordeal seems to begin and end very quickly. Even though the complaint about the manna is understandable to us in 20/20 hindsight, the complaint about water makes no sense. Didn’t they see what just happened a chapter ago when they complained about water?

Could it be that they’re complaining about the new reality which will soon be upon them, that they’re going to have to shlep water and actually work hard to get the food they need once the manna runs out and the well runs dry?

give us much background to the complaining. But one thing is clear. When the guilty are punished with a swift retribution from G-d, without conversations or confrontations, without raised voices and ire between sides, an understanding is quickly reached.

Note how the Torah does not tell us that their food situation or water situation changed or improved. The tale concludes with the people owning up to their sin and with Moshe building the copper snake to help heal those who were bitten. Then they move on to their next destination.

While I am not suggesting an overhaul of the justice system in this country (though with DNA testing, we often hear stories of innocent people sitting on death row for years), there are times — such as in the recent horrific shooting in the Charleston, S.C church, as well as other mass shootings in the country — where the perpetrator is known, there are multiple witnesses, and the blood is on his hands, where swift punishment would drive the message home.

It worked in the Torah: For the first time, the people immediately admit their guilt, and they don’t even get what they want!

Alas, G-d is the only One Who can be so sure. Until such a time when He chooses to punish accordingly again, we can marvel at how quickly the lesson is learned, and hope that in our own human way we can learn from His incredible example.

Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro asked Prime Minister Netanyahu to publicly rebuke former Israeli ambassador to the U.S. Michael Orenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarks that President Obama abandoned Israel by purposely driving a wedge between the countries, Haâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;aretz reported. Bibi refused.

Oren has accused Obama of deliberately abandoning Israel from the time he entered the White House in 2008.

Perhaps Netanyahu refused to condemn Orenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s claims because they are true. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From the moment he entered ofďŹ ce, Mr. Obama promoted an agenda of championing the Palestinian cause and achieving a nuclear accord with Iran,â&#x20AC;?

Oren wrote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Such policies would have put him at odds with any Israeli leader. But Mr. Obama posed an even more fundamental challenge by abandoning the two core principles of Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alliance with Americaâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that there would be no publicly visible daylight between the countries and â&#x20AC;&#x153;no surprisesâ&#x20AC;? (things would be discussed privately before being announced publicly).

Obama complained to American Jewish leaders in 2009 that â&#x20AC;&#x153;when there is no daylight, Israel just sits on the sidelines and that erodes our credibility with the Arabs.â&#x20AC;? The explanation ignored Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2005 withdrawal from Gaza and its two previous offers of Palestinian statehood in Gaza, almost the entire West Bank and half of Jerusalemâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;both offers rejected by the Palestinians.

In his â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wall Street Journalâ&#x20AC;? op-ed last week, Oren talks about a commitment made to Israel by the previous administration that Obama broke in 2009, â&#x20AC;&#x153;to include the major settlement blocs and Jewish Jerusalem within Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s borders in any peace agreement.â&#x20AC;?

As part of that commitment, Israel was free to add housing units to existing settlement communities in Judea and Samaria as long as they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expand those communities, and they were free to add communities in agreed to areas in Jerusalem.

Speaking for the Administration, Hillary Clinton publicly denied that the U.S. had made such commitment under President Bush. As recounted in previous Jewish Star columns by this author, Elliot Abrams, who negotiated the agreement for the U.S., backed up the Israeli account in a 2009 WSJ op-ed.

Soon after, Oren wrote, Obama gave his famous Cairo speech with its unprecedented support for the Palestinians and its recognition of Iranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right to nuclear power, throwing Israel under the bus without ďŹ rst

giving Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ally a heads up.

In his op-ed Oren lists already public examples of Obama purposely surprising his Israeli allies: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In May 2011, the president altered 40 years of U.S. policy by endorsing the 1967 lines with land swapsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;formerly the Palestinian positionâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;as the basis for peacemaking. If Mr. Netanyahu appeared to lecture the president the following day, it was because he had been assured by the White House, through me, that no such change would happen.

Israel was also stunned to learn that Obama offered to sponsor a U.N. Security Council investigation of the settlements and to back Egyptian and Turkish efforts to force Israel to reveal its alleged nuclear capabilities. Netanyahu eventually agreed to a 10-month moratorium on settlement constructionâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the ďŹ rst such moratorium since 1967â&#x20AC;&#x201D;and backed the creation of a Palestinian state. He was taken aback, however, when he received little credit for these concessions from Mr. Obama, who more than once publicly snubbed him.â&#x20AC;?

Oren also complained about Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s once-sided statements and leaks â&#x20AC;&#x153;intended to deter Israel from striking Iran preemptively.â&#x20AC;? But the real kick in the guts was the announcement in 2014 that the U.S. had been secretly negotiating what is turning out to be a bad deal with its most deadly enemy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The daylight between Israel and the U.S. could not have been more blinding,â&#x20AC;?

Oren wrote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And for Israelis who repeatedly heard the president pledge that he â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;had their backsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;was not blufďŹ ngâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; about the military option, only to watch him tell an Israeli interviewer that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a military solution cannot ďŹ xâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the Iranian nuclear threat, the astonishment could not have been greater.â&#x20AC;?

In Orenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ally: My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide,â&#x20AC;? released this week, he explains how he himself fell for the Obama campaign in 2008.

But that this was before he â&#x20AC;&#x153;understood the deep and profound coldness within Barack Obama, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a chillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;distanced him from traditional American alliesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;not only Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;whose ambassadors complained to me of the administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unprecedented aloofness. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s problem is not a tin ear,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; one of my European colleagues lamented, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a tin heartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;?

What Oren doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mention (because he canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as long as she is a possibility to be president), is that Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partner in these policies was none other than Hillary Clinton. And if she is elected president the horrible eight Obama years of Israel-U.S. relations will be extended. By Bradley Martin, JNS.org In 2002, Montreal’s Concordia University was home to infamous riots preventing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from speaking. In 2015, the same university hosted the largest annual international academic gathering for the field of Israel Studies. What a difference 13 years makes.

Many of Israel’s considerable advances for the benefit of humankind were showcased earlier this month during the 31st Annual Meeting of the Association for Israel Studies (AIS) at Concordia. Outgoing AIS President Menachem Hofnung called this year’s event “the largest assembly I have presided over.”

Among the highlights of the conference was Israel’s counterterrorism technology— something the Jewish state developed largely out to necessity, given its hostile neighbors.

Yagil Henkin, a military history instructor at the Israel Defense Forces Command and General Staff College, described the difficult lessons learned by the IDF during the 1982 Lebanon War and subsequent conflicts that took place between Israel and Hezbollah.

While all the tactical battles in that war were won by Israel, there was no preparation for what was described as a “war of attrition.” Hence, new techniques had to be found to win a war that could not be ended through conventional means. Many Israelis—and by extension, others—that would have otherwise been victims of terrorist attacks have been saved through such techniques. One specific technique Henkin spoke about was the way in which the IDF maintains the Hezbollah terror group as a “reliable enemy,” accepting its presence as long as it does not attack or infiltrate Israeli territory. Attacks against Hezbollah have been limited to specific targets, while the IDF has been careful not to stay in Lebanon for extended periods of time. This new strategy has resulted in significantly fewer Israeli casualties from Hezbollah attacks since the 1990s.

Michal Kobi, a senior lecturer in the Department of Israel and Middle Eastern Studies at Ariel University, described the learning curve associated with tackling jihadi terror. He noted techniques that have been collaboratively developed by the U.S.-based RAND Corporation think tank and Israeli intelligence offices to bridge the knowledge gap on terrorism between military and political leaders, since such a disconnect has resulted in the compromised efficiency of Western governments in fighting jihadi ter-

rorism. Kobi outlined one solution in which political leaders assert complete control over their respective militaries, while governmental mechanisms are put in place for political leaders to take the concerns of the military into proper consideration.

Jamila Elnashef—a social theory, social stratification, and qualitative social research scholar at Tel Aviv University—highlighted the improvements in the quality of life for Israel’s Muslim Arabs since the country achieved independence in 1948. Major improvements include the creation of a previously non-existent economic middle class and substantial freedoms for Muslim women in Israel that are unparalleled throughout the rest of the Middle East. This new Muslim identity was defined, according to Elnashef, as “an active agency in which Israeli Muslims seek to work with Jewish and Arab sectors.”

Israeli medical advancements and assistance were also showcased at the AIS gathering. Dr. Richard J. Deckelbaum founded the Israel-based Medical School of International Health, a collaborative program between Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and Columbia University in which both institutions have invested significant academic resources.

Centered on cross-cultural medical practice, it engages in life-saving programs in the Middle East, such as working with the Ramallah Children’s Hospital to vaccinate Palestinian youths, working to reduce the prevalence of obesity in Gaza and the West Bank, and running nutrition programs that improve the quality of life in communities within and outside of Israel.

Deckelbaum noted, with some regret, that there is still a danger of reprisal against Arabs who seek to live and work peacefully with Israel.

“Many refuse to accept co-authorship credits or acknowledgment from Israeli authors when publishing medical articles and reports,” he said.

But fears of reprisal do not deter all who seek to learn more about Israel. Mennaallah Abukhadra, who is pursuing her doctorate in Modern Hebrew Language and Literature at Cairo University and is a fluent Hebrew speaker who could pass as a native Israeli, attended the Montreal conference seeking to learn more about Israeli society. Though she came in a non-official capacity and not as a representative of Cairo University, she described how the university is home to about 1,300 students who seek Hebrew-language

degrees. According to Abukhadra, there are many in Egypt who want to learn more about Israeli society than the simplistic narrative of “the Israeli enemy” that dominated the academic discourse in Egypt for decades.

“I truly want to go to Israel and learn about the people there. If I could go and just take one Hebrew course there, then I would be truly happy,” she said.

Canadian Member of Parliament Irwin Cotler, in a keynote address at the conference, spoke of the absurdity of calling Israel “an apartheid state.” Relating his experiences as an observer in the Canadian delegation for the United Nations Human Rights Council, he said that Israel was the subject of every meeting in spite of any other global developments.

As someone who was involved in taking

down the real apartheid in South Africa back in 1981, Cotler described the anti-Israel analogy as a manifestation of one of “the oldest and most absurd of hatreds.” While there is room for legitimate criticism of Israel, the Jewish state is a country with much to be proud of in terms of advancing human rights and improving the quality of life for all humanity, he said. At Concordia University, a venue once notoriously hostile to Israel, that point was driven home with frequency and vigor during the AIS conference.

Continued from page 16 White House continued to condemn Israeli construction in some of the very areas that Abbas offered to forgo.” Obama’s visceral opposition to settlements also placed Abbas in an awkward position when it came to other potential concessions from the Palestinian side. “Mahmoud Abbas,” Oren memorably writes, “could not be less Palestinian than Obama.”

On Iran—the source of a truly existential threat to Israel—Oren’s book offers little in the way of comfort. Oren recalls hearing Israel’s late prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, warning in the early 1990s that Iran “was covertly working to produce nuclear bombs”— a deadly prospect that has been kept alive in the ongoing negotiations with Tehran.

In Obama’s eyes, though, this reality has been inverted. “When I came into office, Iran was united and the world was divided,” Oren quotes the president asserting. “And now what we have is a united international community that is saying to Iran, you’ve got to change your ways.” Somehow, somewhere along the line, the successive U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding an end to Iran’s enrichment activities must have disappeared.

Since none of the problems described in “Ally” have been resolved—if anything, they

have been exacerbated—the book can be regarded as an important reality check for those readers who still believe that the current administration has Israel’s back. Oren recalls a “fuming” Susan Rice, who now serves as Obama’s national security adviser, telling him, “If you don’t appreciate the fact that we defend you night and day, tell us. We have other important things to do.” The contemptuous tone isn’t the most worrying aspect of this remark; rather, it’s the absurd implication that the security relationship between the U.S. and Israel flows in one direction only. The vital fact that Israel fights its own wars and doesn’t require American troops to risk their lives for its security again appears to have been overlooked.

As we head towards the ostensible climax of the Iran negotiations on June 30—which will likely be accompanied by a renewed assault on Israel’s legitimacy stemming from the publication of the U.N.’s biased report on the Gaza conflict of July and August 2014— the timing of Oren’s book couldn’t be better.

My modest advice, then, is to ignore the background noise, read the book, and decide for yourselves whether or not the smothering “chibbuk” (Hebrew for hug) in which the U.S., under Obama, has placed Israel is in the best interests of the world’s only Jewish state.

Sixteen local, national, and international organizations wrote a letter to MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin urging him to cancel the class before it became “a stain on your university’s reputation and a disservice to students. … Smith’s proposed course would certainly contribute to a campus climate favorable to anti-Semitic acts.”

Students feared that if Smith has few qualms about using intimidation in group meetings, he would be equally as uninhibited in the classroom. The university, however, did not share those same sentiments.

Nancy West, director of MU’s Honors College, told JNS.org that honors tutorials are different than courses offered under the normal curriculum of the university. They are one-credit electives taught by instructors with “expertise in the subject area,” but not

necessarily with credentials. Courses are reviewed by a faculty, staff, and student curriculum committee that reads the syllabus and interviews the teacher. According to university spokeswoman Mary Jo Banken, Smith’s class was approved by the committee with a vote of eight to four, with two abstentions.

Smith recalled that he was confronted by the committee as to whether being an activist disqualified him from teaching this course.

“Can an activist teach a class? It runs against the fundamental principles of academic honesty for a teacher to use his position of power to push a particular point of view. What I claimed—and who knows if I really could have lived up to this—was that if a student comes into this course convinced and committed to Zionism then that student will leave a better Zionist,” he said.

“Smith has a 30-year record of being an outstanding teacher who is very well respected,” said West. “We trusted that record and trusted him. … I stand behind George’s course.”

Nonetheless, it is unlikely that the course will ever be offered again in the future. While West said it is not uncommon for tutorials to be cancelled due to low enrollments—and Smith’s was not the only one this year—an affidavit is being prepared by Jewish community activists, in conjunction with the university legal department, that would help ensure Smith will be turned down next time he tries to teach about Zionism.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because her testimony is tantamount to the affidavit, said four students that don’t feel safe with Smith leading anything on this topic have provided evidence. She has provided a series of harassing anti-Israel emails from Smith that will back up this case.

West said the university also agreed to change its policies as a result of some of the backlash. Going forward, all honors tutorials will be subject to anonymous student review after the first three weeks of the semester.

“If George’s course had gone through, we would have sent something to his students

within the third week and, if there had been an issue, we would have addressed it right away,” West said.

The students are relieved they did not have to get to that point, and adult activists say they are proud of their students for pushing for change.

“Administrations sometimes try to bully our students and it is refreshing to see students stand up in the face of administrations, especially in a case like this,” said David Walker, who directs nationwide campus outreach efforts for CUFI. “She did the right thing and we are behind her 150 percent.”

Albritton graduated last month. She told JNS.org that she has left MU’s CUFI chapter “in good hands,” and that she is confident a strong hand against Smith’s anti-Israel bias will continue to be needed on campus.

Noted community activist Michael Robbins of Columbia said, “We cannot just be satisfied because George Smith had zero registration. Israel needs all the positive reinforcement it can get.”

World Health Organization singled out Israel as the one country in the world to be condemned for violating human health rights. Saudi Arabia, which sits as a member of the U.N. Human Rights Council, sponsored the exercise in the absurd.

If hypocrisy needed a poster child, the despotic and brutal regime of Saudi Arabia, which is currently bombing Yemenite civilians into oblivion and is advertising job openings for additional executioners (growth industry in Saudi Arabia), more than set the standard.

Worse, a majority of the so called â&#x20AC;&#x153;civilizedâ&#x20AC;? nations of the world supported the resolution, showing that subservience to the power of oil trumps any semblance of integrity in the international community.

The Saudis can be dismissed. It is unnecessary to delineate their acts of brutality.

These have long appeared before the world.

The Saudisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hypocrisy is a mainstay of their propaganda. If not for their oil, their anti-Israel vitriol would be disregarded, as one day the changing nature of the energy market will cause it to be.

With the exception of naive, leftist college students who are taught that the U.N. is a citadel of virtue, no one will take a Saudisponsored resolution seriously.

The harm is not in the resolution. It is in its acceptance by the global community, and the message that the action sends to the Israelis.

Further isolating the Israelis with resolutions forged in the cauldron of the absurd,

The international community has an apoplectic ďŹ t every time an Israeli builds an extra room in Jerusalem, but is conspicuously silent about Palestinian or Arab incitement.

The village, with about 50 inhabitants, voted to change the name in 2014 after the mayor argued that the term was offensive and that the village should honor its Jewish origins.

Documents show the villagesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; original name was â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jewsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Hill Campâ&#x20AC;? and that the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kill Jewsâ&#x20AC;? name dates from 1627, after a 1492 Spanish edict ordering Jews to become Catholics or ďŹ&#x201A;ee the country. Those who remained faced the Spanish inquisition, with many burned at the stake.

The name change was approved by the regional government of Castilla y Leon and published in the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ cial gazette.

Although Jews were killed in the area, researchers believe the village got its recent name from Jewish residents who converted to Catholicism and wanted to reinforce their repudiation of Judaism to convince Spanish authorities of their loyalty. Others suspect the change may have come from a slip of the pen.

Although no Jews live in the village today, many residents have ancient Jewish roots and the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ cial shield includes the Star of David.

Spainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lower house of parliament this month approved a law setting a citizenship path for the descendants of Jews who were forced to ďŹ&#x201A;ee the country centuries ago.

Spain also has an ancient southeastern town called Valle de Matamoros, which translate as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kill Muslims Valley.â&#x20AC;? The town has said it has no plans to change its name.

Matamoros is also a surname in Spain.

Jews need to be accompanied by police or soldiers to visit their holy place. The idea that the Temple Mount could be holy to both faiths, and that God hears all prayers, is obviously anathema to Islam, but inciting children to harassment at a sacred place is not.

Instead of this being recognized as an act of goodwill, it has been seen as an act of weakness to be abused and exploited.

Peace between Israelis and Arabs, however desirable, is currently an illusion. The greatest obstacle to peace is not the settlements, but the corrupt socialization of children at the most tender of ages into raw hatred, not just for Israelis but also for Jews generally. It manifests itself daily in the behavior of children on the Temple Mount, in the celebration of mass murders, and in blood-libel resolutions promulgated at the U.N. When the civilized nations of the world claim they want peace between Arabs and Israelis, they need to look at their own behavior in supporting the 21st centuryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s U.N.sanctioned blood libels as one of the great obstacles to achieving that.
