That’s the idea behind the American Physicians Fellowship for Medicine (APF), a specialized track within the Taglit-Birthright Israel program offering free trips to Israel for Jews ages 18–26. For 11 years, APF has been showing tomorrow’s medical professionals from across North America the Israel most of them have only seen in news reports—while creating memories, loyalties, and friendships designed to last a lifetime. “I’ve been to Russia and England, but when I met Israelis, especially the soldiers, the conversations were somehow personal as soon as we met,â€? said 22-year-old Brittany Bunkis, among 39 participants who returned from their APF experience last month. By Jeff Dunetz, Jewish Star columnist In one fell swoop on Tuesday, a quarter century of standard language about Israel by either party was tossed out and new GOP platform language adopted which places Republican Party squarely behind the unity of Jerusalem, against BDS and in favor of removing the label of “occupierâ€? from Israel. The pro-Israel amendement, presented by South Carolina delegate Alan Clemmons, was adopted with a standing ovation by the Platform Committee and tears from some of those in the audience. The new platform language keeps a previous reference to Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, but not as a shared city. The new wording emphasizes that “we recognize Jerusalem as the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish state, and call for the American embassy to be moved there in fulďŹ llment of U.S. law.â€? The platform does not mention a “twostateâ€? solution or a Palestinian state and strongly rejects the approach to Israeli policy taken by the Obama administration with strong language: Continued on page 22

emocratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is hardly in a happy place at the moment. Now that she’s avoided federal prosecution for compromising national security through her use of a private email server—a breathtaking turn of fortune that, critics say, would be denied to lesser

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum has asked visitors to refrain from playing “PokĂŠmon Goâ€? after characters from the augmented reality game were found inside the museum. “Playing the game is not appropriate in the museum, which is a memorial to the victims of Nazism,â€? the museum said. Let’s consider Hillary Clinton ďŹ rst. Some readers will remember that during her speech to the AIPAC convention back in March, Clinton delivered a rousing message of support to Jewish students confronting anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism on university campuses. “I hope you stay strong,â€? she told them. “Keep speaking out. In just one week, the game has become a global sensation that is on the verge of overtaking Twitter in terms of active users. It’s clear that many Americans regard the November face-off with Donald Trump as involving the selection of the least troubling candidate. In terms of making a decision in the voting booth, we will need to rely, perhaps to a greater extent than we would normally be comfortable with, on the public statements and on-the-record positions of both candidates, as well as on their reactions to the broader themes underlying this election. Sadly, and almost inexplicably, one of
