Dems hope to swing Zeldin’s district

By Frank Eltman PATCHOGUE (AP) — It’s one of America’s quintessential congressional swing districts.

For seven decades, five Republicans and five Democrats have alternately held the House seat representing the 1st Congressional District on eastern Long Island, including one — Michael Forbes — who switched parties.

With the election still 16 months away, Democrats are already maneuvering for a shot at another turnover, lining up to challenge freshman incumbent Republican and Iraq war veteran Lee Zeldin. Most are expecting a withering battle that could cost more than the nearly $15 million spent a year ago.

“That’s insane for a congressional seat: $15 million?” said retiree Dave Flowers as he walked out of a bagel store in Patchogue. “What that money could do to actually help communities alone? It seems a little bit out of control.”

Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, said freshmen congressmen are typically the most vulnerable, and because 2016 is a presidential election year — when voter turnout is higher — two strong Democrats have already entered the race and are chasing “the big bucks as early as possible.”

The diverse district encompasses miles of suburban sprawl, rural wineries and farms, as well as the high-end Hamptons. Its boundary has been largely unchanged for decades, and Republicans hold a slight advantage over Democrats in voter registration, although about one-third of all voters in the district — 122,491 — are not registered with any political party.

FEMA’s flood fix deadline: Sept 15

By Barbra Rubin-Perry The Federal Emergency Management Agency has set Sept. 15 as a deadline for requests to review potentially underpaid Hurricane Sandy claims.

Insurance policyholders can opt-in to the Sandy claims review process either by calling 866-337-4262 or visiting fema. gov/hurricane-sandy-nfip-claims.

A Washington-based law firm, Weisbrod Matteis & Copley (800-266-1183), has been promoting its services to Long Islanders who are evaluating whether or not to reopen their claims. Last month, the firm held a a well-attended informational meeting in Long Beach.

After hearings and communications from four senators, FEMA agreed to take a second look at as many as 144,000 National Flood Insurance policyholder claims, with an eye toward potential upward adjustments in payouts.

Many policyholders are skeptical, not wanting to reengage with FEMA, the organization that oversaw how their flood claims were handled in the first place.

A report published on June 23 by the Senate Banking Committee argues that there was no “systematic underpayment” of flood insurance claims in the wake of Sandy, which is the opposite of the experiences and beliefs of many South Shore homeowners. Allegations that led to the creation of the Sandy claims review process were not part of the Senate report.

AIPAC statement: Congress should push for better deal The American Israel Public Affairs Committee distributed the following statement on Wednesday afternoon: AIPAC has consistently supported diplomatic efforts to end Iran’s nuclear weapons program, and we appreciate the commitment and dedication of President Obama and his administration throughout these negotiations.

Unfortunately, this proposed agreement fails to halt Iran’s nuclear quest. Instead, it would facilitate rather than prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and would further entrench and empower the leading state sponsor of terror.

During these negotiations, we outlined criteria for a good deal that Congress itself had set in five critical areas: inspections, possible military dimensions, sanctions, duration, and dismantlement. In each of these areas, the proposed agreement has significant flaws: The proposed deal does not ensure “anytime, anywhere” short-notice inspections; The proposed deal does not clearly condition sanctions relief on full Iranian cooperation in satisfying International Atomic Energy Agency concerns over the possible military dimensions of Tehran’s program; The proposed deal lifts sanctions as soon as the agreement commences, rather than gradually as Iran demonstrates sustained adherence to the agreement; The proposed deal lifts key restrictions in as few as eight years; The proposed deal would disconnect and store centrifuges in an easily reversible manner, but it requires no dismantlement of centrifuges or any Iranian nuclear facility.

In return for this flawed agreement, Iran

will receive over $100 billion in sanctions relief. Tehran will use these funds to fuel its hegemonic ambitions, support the killing of civilians in Syria, fund the terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah, and spur deadly conflicts throughout the region.

This agreement not only fails to achieve its objectives in the nuclear arena, but it releases Tehran in a matter of years—regardless of Iranian behavior—from ballistic missile sanctions and an arms embargo imposed by the United Nations Security Council. This late, unexpected concession will provide additional arms for terrorism and proxy wars, while strengthening Iran’s capabilities against our regional allies.

This accord threatens the future of the nuclear non-proliferation regime. By leaving Iran on the threshold of a nuclear weapon— despite its history of violating international obligations —other countries in the region will have a dangerous incentive to initiate their own nuclear programs. The resulting nuclear arms race would severely destabilize the region.

Proponents of the proposed agreement will argue that the only alternative to this agreement is military conflict. In fact, the reverse is true. A bad agreement such as this will invite instability and nuclear proliferation. It will embolden Iran and may encourage regional conflict.

We strongly believe that the alternative to this bad deal is a better deal. Congress should reject this agreement, and urge the administration to work with our allies to maintain economic pressure on Iran while offering to negotiate a better deal that will truly close off all Iranian paths to a nuclear weapon.

A forum is scheduled for Sunday evening (July 19) at Temple Hillel in Valley Stream.

Featured speakers include Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Suffolk), Assemblyman Dov Hikind (DBoro Park) and ZOA President Morton Klein.

More than 20 shuls in the Five Towns area are supporting this event, set for 7:30 to 9 pm at 1000 Rosedale Road, organizers said.

A massive “Stop Iran Now” rally in Times Square, featuring 18 high-profile speakers, is being promoted for next Wednesday (July 22) from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Organizers of the Times Square event, heralded as a “rally for peace through strength for America and for humanity,” report that over 50 organizations were participating.

Israel recalls 1976 Entebbe rescue

By Aron Heller TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) â&#x20AC;&#x201D; It was perhaps the most daring Israeli military exploit ever â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a rescue raid in Africa that inspired Hollywood ďŹ lms and became etched in Israeli history.

Nearly four decades later, a ďŹ rst-of-its-kind exhibit showcases the story behind the July 1976 freeing of hostages from a hijacked plane at Entebbe, Uganda. The display includes a copy of the original order to launch the operation and the original combat vest worn by the lone casualty among the Israeli troops: Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The exhibit, at the Yitzhak Rabin Center near Tel Aviv University, is the brainchild of curator Avner Avraham, a former Mossad ofďŹ cer who ďŹ rst researched the project while working for Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spy agency. He brought it into the public domain at the behest of Dalia Rabin-Pelossof, the daughter of the late Yitzhak Rabin, who as prime minister at the time ordered the risky operation.

The crisis began on June 27, 1976, when four hijackers armed with guns and grenades boarded an Air France ďŹ&#x201A;ight from Tel Aviv to Paris during a stopover in Athens and then took over the plane. After a brief refueling in Benghazi, Libya, the plane was ďŹ&#x201A;own to Entebbe, where they were welcomed by Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

The hijackers, two Palestinians and two Germans, then separated about 100 Jewish and Israeli passengers from the rest and threatened to kill them if Israel did not free dozens of Palestinian prisoners. A feverish week of negotiations followed.

On July 4, Israel launched â&#x20AC;&#x153;Operation Thunderboltâ&#x20AC;? in which 200 soldiers took part in an airborne raid on Entebbe airport that

killed the hijackers, freed nearly all the hostages and was off the ground in less than an hour.

Three passengers were killed in crossďŹ re during the rescue mission while a fourth, who had been evacuated to a local hospital, was later killed on orders from an enraged Amin.

Yonatan Netanyahu, the commander of the commando unit that led the raid, was shot dead as he was helping the Israeli hostages who had been held inside the airportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old terminal back onto the plane.

His death made Yonatan an Israeli hero and thrust his family into the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national spotlight.

At the exhibitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opening, Netanyahu was visibly emotional as he spoke of his brother, calling the exhibit â&#x20AC;&#x153;something special.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;These things that are on display here â&#x20AC;Ś remind us of the heroism of Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soldiers, our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unity in trying days and the miracles we are able to create when we stand united against our enemies,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The Entebbe mission was later renamed â&#x20AC;&#x153;Operation Yonatan,â&#x20AC;? which was also the name of an Israeli ďŹ lm that dramatized the story and was nominated in 1978 for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Two other ďŹ lms, featuring Anthony Hopkins, Burt Lancaster, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Dreyfuss, Peter Finch and Charles Bronson, were also made.

But despite the fame it achieved, very little original documentation and artifacts have been made public, Avraham said. He scoured archives and grilled former captives and exMossad colleagues to create a display that shows a simultaneous chronology of events in Entebbe and Israel.

Even with the passing of the years, more material still keeps surfacing.

A few days ago, the Israeli military archive

released handwritten operations logs that included a note from then-Defense Minister Shimon Peres to Rabin in which he informs him of â&#x20AC;&#x153;the ďŹ nal twistâ&#x20AC;? in the plan: Commandoes would disembark from the plane inside a black Mercedes with Ugandan ďŹ&#x201A;ags to make it look like Aminâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vehicle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possible, but (itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s) interesting,â&#x20AC;? Peres wrote.

The Tel Aviv exhibit includes a sketch of the airport terminal, copies of letters in which Rabin was ďŹ rst informed of the hijacking and one of the white bucket hats that Israeli troops wore during the raid.

It features original footage of Amin visiting the hostages and a letter he asked them to write urging the Israeli government to meet the hijackersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; demands. The letter never arrived, but the woman who wrote it still gets choked up when she recalls the experience.

Sara Guter Davidson, now 80, was heading to a family vacation in the United States with her husband and two sons when they were taken hostage. She kept a diary throughout the ordeal that she later turned into a book, describing their experience, including how she tried to keep the children busy by playing cards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I ďŹ gured it was important that some kind of documentation remain of what happened to us because I was pretty sure that we were not going to make it,â&#x20AC;? she said, looking at her diary, which is part of the exhibit.

When they ďŹ nally heard gunďŹ re outside the terminal, she said she lay on top of her youngest son and prepared to die. Then a Hebrewspeaking man in fatigues turned up next to her and said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Folks, we are here to take you home.â&#x20AC;?

She made a dash under gunďŹ re toward the escape plane, where she fainted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People relate to this like it was a miracle,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Honor for Poles who saved Jews

They gathered for a luncheon at a luxury hotel in the city center where Polandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chief rabbi, an Israeli diplomat and a representative of the U.S.-based Jewish Foundation for the Righteous paid tribute to them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You represent the very best in Polish society. You are heroes,â&#x20AC;? Stanlee Stahl, the foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s executive vice president, said as she stood before them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is so important to acknowledge the courage and heroism of the righteous, for each of you saved the honor of humanity.â&#x20AC;?

They are often referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Righteous Gentiles,â&#x20AC;? and are people who lived for decades after the war with little recognition in Polish society, though in recent years the state has done more to acknowledge them.

he thing to remember in respect of the accord with Iran is that there are two Persias. One is the Persia of Cyrus the Great and the other benign kings, who were appreciated by the Jews. The other is the Persia of Haman, who sought to destroy the Jews.

Haman was, the Bible records in the Megillah, thwarted by the valiant Jewish woman Esther, who had married King Ahasuerus and became Queen. The episode is remembered every year when the Megillah is read and each mention of Haman’s name is greeted with the clacking of a grogger.

What noisemaker will be spun in the future at the name of President Obama?

It’s not our intention to suggest that Mr. Obama is the modern Haman. But we have endured two years during which the President’s aides have spoken of Israel’s leadership in gutter language. Now the president has cut a deal with an Iranian regime that could be likened to Haman (and that Mr. Obama himself acknowledges to be antiSemitic but insists is rational).

No doubt he savors the fact that he has already divided the congressional leadership.

Senator Menendez is under federal indictment. Senator Corker is waffling. Senator Schumer, who likes to posture as a defender of Israel, has already suggested in a private meeting with a delegation of the Orthodox Union that he will shrink from opposing this deal.

The Republican leadership of the Senate has agreed to an approval process that requires a veto-proof supermajority to block the accord the president has just announced. No wonder Mr. Obama shows

contempt toward the Congress of the United States.

The accord announced this morning illuminates nothing so much as the reason we were opposed to entering these talks in the first place. If history has taught us anything it is that the talking itself is the appeasement. Talking creates its own incentives to appeasement. It did at Munich. It failed to save Eastern Europe at Yalta. It failed, too, at Paris, where free Vietnam began to slip away (to be finally betrayed in the United States Congress). Yet nothing history teaches us can match the feature of the current appeasement, in which tens of billions of dollars will begin to flow to an active enemy of Israel and other Jews throughout the world.

There are those — Leslie Gelb, among them — who suggest that President Obama is playing a longer game. He knows the Iranians got more out of this deal than America, but reckons the nuclear weapons are not so important as the chance to convert Iran more generally to a friend from a foe.

We are not entirely immune to that instinct; in the mid-1980s, it was explored by President Reagan, backed by the Wall Street Journal. There no doubt are Iranians who truly yearn for our friendship. They sought to rise up in 2009, only to be crushed in the streets of Teheran by the regime that is now become the contract partner of the Obama administration.

There are those who fault Mr. Netanyahu and the Zionist leadership for speaking out so pointedly, as they have, against the accord struck at Vienna. They know that Israel is going to be the first target of the atomic bombs that Iran is seeking, and there is no reason whatsoever for Israel or any of its friends to shrink from speaking forthrightly.

For Mr. Netanayhu and the Zionist leaders know Esther 4:14, which records the words of Mordecai that ring for all of us: “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and rescue will arise for the Jews from elsewhere, and you and your father’s household will perish.”

A

fter a marathon 17 days, the P5+1 deal with Iran is done. The final American concessions to are beginning to emerge and I can say with all confidence this deal stinks. It places America, our Sunni allies in the gulf region and Israel in grave danger and raised the likelihood of war.

The president gave a speech about the deal early Tuesday morning that contained untruths laced with a lot of spin. History buffs will recognize it as a channeling of Neville Chamberlain which in all likelihood will bring the same result as Chamberlain’s “Munich” agreement with Germany: war.

President Obama claimed that the key remaining issues were solved in favor of the U.S. position; in most cases that’s a falsehood. For example, he said that Iran has agreed to anytime/anywhere inspections, yet the deal will allow Iran to have a voice in which/when Iranian sites get inspected.

According to Rich Edson of Fox News, reporting from Vienna, if the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wants to visit a suspicious site in Iran, it must first submit a request to Iran, then Iran has 14 days to respond. That response could end up requiring negotiations between Iran and the IAEA—all the while Iran can be cleaning up that site.

The president’s wording was very specific about which sites will be inspected. He said, “inspectors will have 24/7 access to Iran’s key nuclear facilities.” “Key” does not mean all, it does not mean military facilities, it means some. It also means that Iran will be free to do what it wishes in the other.

In other words, the inspection regime is as strong as the paper it will be printed on.

Reuters is reporting that Obama will go around Congress to relieve sanctions that were imposed for Iran’s non-nuclear offenses, something the Administration had vowed would not be part of the deal. Such sanctions were placed on Iran because of their human

rights abuses (not its nuclear program). Now, as part of the nuclear deal, a weapons embargo will be lifted in five years, missile sanctions in eight years.

Iran wants those embargoes relieved not only to feed its own arsenal, but so they can provide more weapons to their terrorist friends such as Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran, through its satellite organizations, is engaging the United States in multiple hot wars across the Middle East. It is their desire to become the key power in the region. Iran is prosecuting those wars in part to push the U.S. and its allies out of the region. It should be a strategic American goal to deny enemies access to conventional weapons that will be turned against U.S. troops and the armies of allies. Instead, this deal will free the Iranians to import long-denied weapons, and provide them the billions with which they can purchase them.

Lifting the embargo will detonate American power projection in the Gulf. The Wall

Street Journal quotes Andrew Bowen, a security analyst at the Center for the National Interest: “At its core, the relaxation of the arms embargo would enable Iran to credibly challenge the U.S.’s ability to maintain a military presence in the Persian Gulf. … It’s not simply a matter of a balance of power between Gulf states and Iran, but the long-term security of the U.S. and our allies.”

Iranian military doctrine relies on Chinese-style anti-access/area denial tactics to deny the U.S. Navy the ability to operate in the theater. Giving the Iranians functionally unlimited access to precision anti-ship ballistic missiles would pose a staggering challenge to Washington’s ability to put and keep American assets in the Gulf. Iran would then in turn be able to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, through which almost 20 percent of the world’s oil needs travel.

ast week, I started the third year in my volunteer job at Kulanu’s Camp Discovery. I love meeting up with my campers from last year, and look forward to meeting the new ones in my baking and decorating groups. The camp director, Jonathan Cooper, always thanks me profusely for volunteering, and I respond with my thanking him for letting me have the opportunity to work with these wonderful campers.

Each week is always an adventure, starting out with choosing a recipe or project to make with the kids.

In the beginning I made a few mistakes Now I know it’s best not to just have all vanilla or all chocolate — not all campers love both.

It’s also safer to have sprinkles in every color, and it’s much more fun for the kids to eat their creations in camp than to bring them home.

My apologies to the parents, for you not getting to see your child’s handiwork, but let me tell me you, watching their creativity and gusto is only paralleled by their devouring a treat after they create it.

As cliche as it sounds, they teach me way more than I teach them. The way I view it, I’m the lucky one!

The counselors are a wonderful bunch of kids (shout out to Brittany and Shannon Kaufmann, who I’ve know since they were born), eager to make sure their campers are ready to tackle the project we are working on.

16 standard vanilla cupcakes baked in white paper liners (recipe below for both regular and mini cupcakes) 16 mini vanilla cupcakes baked in white paper liners 40 chocolate cream-filled sandwich cookies 2 (16 ounces) plus 1 cup vanilla frosting you will have some leftover Black food coloring 16 mini marshmallows 32 mini chocolate chips 8 black jelly beans cut in half 32 pieces chocolate cereal O’s either Cheerios or gluten free Crispy O’s Post cereal O’s are no longer available Cupcake recipe 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup shortening or butter 1 2/3 cups sugar 5 egg whites 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1 1/4 cups milk Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350°F. Place 16 white or beige paper baking liner cups in muffin tin, then do the the same for mini muffins in a mini muffin tin 2. In medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.

3. In large bowl, beat shortening for speed 30 seconds. Gradually add sugar, about 1/3 cup at a time, beating well after each addition and scraping bowl occasionally. Beat 2 minutes longer. Add egg whites, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. On low speed, alternately add flour mixture, about 1/3 of mixture at a time, and milk, about 1/2 at a time, beating just until blended.

4. Divide batter evenly among muffin cups, filling each about 2/3 full.

5. Bake until toothpick comes out clean when inserted. Mini cupcakes will obviously be done before the regular cupcakes.

Cool cupcake completely before decorating.

Assembly of panda cupcakes: Keep referring to the photo, it make assembly much easier.

1. To make the arms and legs, cut 32 of the cookies in half using a serrated knife and set

aside. Place the remaining 8 cookies in a food processor and process until finely ground.

Transfer the cookie crumbs to a small bowl.

2. Place 2 tablespoons of the vanilla frosting in a small ziplock bag. Tint 1/4 cup of the vanilla frosting black with the food coloring and spoon it into a ziplock bag. Press out the excess air in each bag, seal, and set aside.

3. Using a dot of the remaining vanilla frosting, attach the flat side of 1 marshmallow to the top of each mini cupcake, positioning it on the lower third of the cupcake. Spread the vanilla frosting on top of the mini cupcake, covering the marshmallow to make the muzzle. Smooth the frosting. Snip a 1/16-inch corner from the bag with the black frosting and pipe a mouth just below the muzzle, with a small vertical line up to the top of the muzzle.

Pipe eye patches above and to either side of the muzzle. Add 2 chocolate chips, pointed side in, for the eyes and a sunflower seed for the nose. Press 2 chocolate cereal pieces into the frosting on either side of the top edge of the cupcake to make the ears.

4. Spread the tops of the standard cupcakes with the remaining vanilla frosting, mounding it with your spatula. Roll one half of the frosted cupcake into the cookie crumbs to make the black belly fur. Place the mini cupcake heads on their sides on top of the standard cupcakes, lining the faces up with the fur bodies. Snip a 1/8-inch corner from the bag with the vanilla frosting. Add a dot of frosting where the arms will go and press 2 of the cookie halves, cut side in, on either side of the mini cupcakes to make the arms. Pipe 3 small white lines of frosting on the arms to make the claws. Pipe a small white highlight in each eye.

Place the remaining cookie halves, cut side down, next to the pandas to make the legs.

Pols aid Hatzalah’s stalled Woodmere garage Construction projects are prone to surprises and setbacks. Look no further than Hatzolah of the Rockaways and Nassau County volunteer ambulance corp’s near-decade effort to construct an ambulance garage in Woodmere. After many challenges, however, just as the weather started getting warmer this spring, the project finally seemed ready to cross the finish line.

Then came the surprise — and then the setback.

Hatzalah’s plan to convert a former mechanic shop on West Broadway in Woodmere into a modern, three-bay ambulance garage is an ambitious project, which includes replacing a deteriorating roof and adding a third parking bay. While dismantling the roof, the contractor recognized inherent weaknesses in the unreinforced brick walls that comprise the existing structure. As soon as the roof was completely removed, fearing imminent collapse, the contractor preemptively demolished two of the three existing walls.

Though a necessary precautionary measure, the unplanned demolition and resultant need for reconstruction went far beyond the scope of the approved plans Hatzalah filed when applying for a Town of Hempstead building permit.

Municipal governments carefully regulate the design and construction of any structure by requiring and retaining accurate, comprehensive documentation of all building projects for many reasons — including ensuring that the structure is consistent with local zoning laws; that it meets town building codes; and that it complies with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, environmental laws and workers safety requirements.

Because the nature and parameters of the Hatzalah garage project changed so dramatically — from renovating an existing structure

to constructing a brand new structure — Hatzalah suddenly faced the prospect of having to halt all construction and virtually restarting the entire permit application process.

“This development was a crushing blow,” said Rabbi Elozer Kanner, coordinator of the Hatzalah of Rockaway/Nassau. “Overnight, just as the project was finally gaining momentum, our progress came to a screeching halt. It was a terrible disappointment, and a difficult setback.”

Under normal circumstances, applying for and being approved for demolition and new construction permits, as Hatzalah was now required to do, could take months to complete, and along the way, costing many thousands of dollars in permit application, legal, and architecture fees.

“We were back to square one on a project that seemed all but complete,” said Moshe Ratner, a Hatzalah volunteer, and a key member of the team working on the ambulance garage project.

Among Ratner’s main concerns was that it would be winter by the time all the filing requirements and technical details were complete. This would mean having to once again exposing the ambulances to several months of ice, snow, and freezing temperatures, all of which cause excessive wear and tear for the vehicles, and dramatically decreasing their lifespan of useful service.

Unsure of where else to turn, Rabbi Kan-

ner reached out to Town of Hempstead Councilmen Anthony Santino and Bruce Blakeman who, between the two, represent the entire Five Towns on the Town of Hempstead Board.

Santino and Blakeman arranged an emergency meeting with Building Department plan examiners to provide Hatzalah’s architect, D.J. Shtierman, and project leaders, Moshe Ratner and Meir Krengel, a point-by-point list of exactly what they needed to produce when filing the new permit applications and building plans.

“Hatzalah is an organization anyone could admire, and one I hold in especially high esteem,” said Santino.

“Rabbi Kanner represents an army of uniquely selfless, unsung heroes who sacrifice their time, energy, and expertise to help people they never met, usually on a moment’s notice. Whenever Rabbi Kanner calls for help, finding a solution goes straight to the top of my priority list.”

men made a special request that the Buildings Department waive the thousands of dollars in application fees Hatzalah would otherwise need to spend.

“They already paid all these fees the first time they applied for permits,” said Councilman Santino. “I’d rather see that money go towards training volunteers, or keeping their ambulances stocked.”

Blakeman worked to ensure that the application submission and approval process ran as quickly and smoothly as possible.

“Anytime someone in distress calls Hatzalah, they know help will be on the scene in less than two minutes,” said Blakeman.

“These noble volunteers do this every single day and night, and they’ve been doing it for decades. I say this from personal experience as I was treated by Hatzalah EMTs for my own medical emergency just a few months ago.

When Hatzalah calls the Town of Hempstead in distress, the least we can do is send it as soon as we can.”

In this case, it took less than a week. In the typical scenario, this could have taken months.

“We had our best people working on this, and they understood why we needed to help this organization, and why it was so important to put them back on track so quickly,” said Santino. “I’m proud of what we achieved.”

Both Santino and Blakeman share a long history of helping Hatzalah.

Understanding Ezekiel’s Temple prophecy ALAN JAY GERBER KOSHER BOOKWORM

I

n his excellent siddur commentary Biur Tefilla, “Rebuilding Jerusalem,” Rabbi Jay Goldmintz teaches us the following: “For thousands of years the Jewish people have mourned the destruction of Jerusalem.

Every single day, in our prayers, when we say Birkat HaMazon, at weddings, and on holy days, we have always declared our connection to Yerushalayim — ‘Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy’ (Psalms 137).

“There are actually three interrelated requests in this blessing [in the daily Amida service]: a. The return to Jerusalem and the Beit Hamikdash being rebuilt; b. The dwelling of the Shechina there; c. That the monarchy be reestablished there.

“The desire is expressed not just for the rebuilding of the Beit HaMikdash itself but for the residence of the Shechina there.

Hence the fact that we have Yerushalayim in our hands today is not a sufficient fulfillment of the request in the blessing [of Velirushalayim irchah].”

With this teaching as prologue, and with the advent of the Nine Days, I shall now introduce you to the writings of a very interesting author and scholar, Chaim Clorfene, and his book, “The Messianic Temple” (Menorah Books, 2005). This work is indeed a nontechnical user friendly guide that sets out to teach us the cryptic design and meaning of the Third Temple as revealed in the vision of the Prophet Ezekiel (chapters 40 through 48).

The first 49 pages of this coffee table size book serves as an introduction to all the various facets of the diverse scholarship and commentary of the Biblical text. The remaining 200 pages contains a detailed English translation of the Biblical text and commentary by Clorfene coupled with a plethora of very effective charts, colorful and attractive illustrations and detailed diagrams that serve to give the reader and student a full understanding of the meaning of what previously had been an otherwise hidden source of scholarship concerning the prophet’s prophecy.

Among the main sources cited are the teachings of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, the Ramchal (1707–1746), whose work, “Mishkanay Elyon,’’ serves as one of the prime sources of scholarship on the prophet’s teachings. The Ramchal’s teachings on this, and the history behind the previously little known or understood “Mishkanay Elyon,” which is in and of itself an historical adven-

or those of you who pretend there is no politically liberal bias among the national media, consider these two recent events involving Hillary Clinton.

First, national press reporters actually allowed Hillary’s staff members to keep them at bay within two ropes the staffers held at a 4th of July Parade in New Hampshire. Why? Hillary wanted them far enough away from her campaigning so they could not hear what she was saying to potential voters. The reporters dutifully obeyed.

Hillary’s campaign told CNN, “While the GOP might want to spin a good yarn on this, let’s not get tied up in knots. We wanted to accommodate the press, allow [Clinton to] greet voters. And allow the press to be right there in the parade with her, as opposed to preset locations.”

Again and again, Hillary pretends Republicans make up stories about her behavior and expects the press to acquiesce. Which they are now doing by “forgetting” the abuse.

Would the story be “over” if Sarah Palin rope-a-doped the press with real ropes?

Dodging the press for months, CNN obviously allowed Hillary to choose her first interview to be with Brianna Keilar, a former “Morning Zoo” DJ and journalism lightweight best known as the reporter whose most poignant question to President Obama in his year-end press conference was, “What’s your New Year’s resolution?”

Questioning Hillary about using a personal email server while Secretary of State and deleting thousands of emails, Brianna demonstrated her lack of knowledge and submissiveness.

Hillary claimed she did not break any laws or regulations by using a personal server instead of federal government server for her of-

ficial communications, further claiming that “previous Secretaries of State have said they did the same thing.” Brianna’s “follow-up” question came off as Kabuki theater, saying, “But you said they … that they did the same thing, that they used a personal server and while facing a subpoena, deleted emails from them?”

Glaring at the inexperienced Brianna, Clinton condescendingly intoned, “You know, you’re starting with so many assumptions that are …

I’ve never had a subpoena.” (There is actually an outstanding subpoena regarding Benghazi that includes the server emails.) Looking straight into Brianna’s eyes, she gestures “calm down” with her hands and commands, “There is … let’s take a deep breath here. [The “don’t mess with me glare” returns.] Everything I did was permitted with law and regulation. I had one device. When I mailed anyone in the government it would go into the government system.” She said she didn’t have to turn over any emails — she chose to do that.

At this point, a prepared, nonpartisan journalist would challenge Hillary with questions about violating the 2005 “clear cut” State Department directive that all day-to-day communications be conducted using government systems, challenge her claim that she needed to carry only “one device” when she’s been often photographed carrying two or three, or perhaps challenge her assertion that she “did not email any classified material to anyone on my email.”

“A State Department official said that was “highly unlikely” and it dodges the State Department concern of potential “sensitive” information, not merely “classified.”

Brianna’s response was to laugh and giggle with Hillary-like besties about silly emails Hillary would rather discuss.

Questions about Hillary’s obvious foundation scheme of bribes-for-policy from foreign governments was off the table in favor of questions about Saturday Night Live and how Hillary feels about Republicans.

Perhaps they discussed Brianna’s attendance at the wedding of Hillary’s “grassroots” campaign director “off-camera.”

Temple Center, a private museum dedicated to tours of the Third Temple model where he lectures about its design and meaning.

E

yes glaze over. Faces sag. Bodies slump. Confusion overcomes and normally confident persons whither at hearing the phrase: everything requires thought. This is true of those who quickly want to become a photographer. They may want to assist, or intern, for a short while to learn everything there is to know and then they want to do what I do.

Recently a young person found me in at my studio. That’s not so easy, as when I am in I am in creative sessions, and when I am out, I am not in. But here I was, listening to how her parents suggested the visit because she wants to be a photographer, even though they advised against it. I got the distinct impression that she had brilliant parents.

Photography can be a wonderful career for those who love technology and take pride in developing both artistic and technical skill. Those insensitive to the human spirit never feel the effects that an image has on its viewers the same way as those sensitive to artistic things can feel, and who therefore put feeling into what they do. But it does involve an interest in understanding technical things, being good with gear, and great with people. It involves an artistic spirit but requires a mind that is both artsy and strongly anchored in science.

Doing something that is different is not doing something better. On the other hand, those who don’t love technical considerations ultimately fail to adequately and competently control the technical, which is essential. Automation does not suffice. Images a machine can do on its own render

you superfluous. For those that want some thing special, you better be special!

This person tried to sell me on the idea that while she has a lot to learn and does not really know anything yet, that by be ing an intern with me, we will be helping each other. Yes, she could be learning a lo and possibly be of help to me. But if wha she will be doing is not important then she would not be learning much and will soon quit, just after I started counting on her to have a modicum of ability in a task. If I have low standards, she won’t learn what is im portant, and if I am strict, she will tell oth ers I am difficult. If a task is important then it involves caring, concern and accuracy.

When something is done well, all details are important and contribute to it being a success. When something is not done with care and precision, it cannot be worth much to anyone, including the intern, who would not be learning from the task. Some busi ness owners either choose to take advan tage of interns for cheap labor, or have little problem expecting little and delivering little both to the intern as well as to their clients Good teachers first have to know, then have to care and finally have to communicate. In terestingly, few interns seem to value com munication or excel at it.

Normally people say they want to learn but when given an assignment or a source to follow up, they show their true lack of in terest. Last week someone actually sent me an email with a link to some items and ideas that I had mentioned earlier. It touched me It meant there actually was interest.

Conversely, to most it is often only abou the money, or the resume entry. It is hard to fake substance, but being an artist is a way of thinking. And, yes, everything requires thought!

RABBI BINNY FREEDMAN THE HEART OF JERUSALEM

W

hat makes leaders willing to sacrifice everything? This week marked nine years since my cousin Benjy Hillman fell in battle leading his men into combat in the second Lebanon War in 2006. One would think the tears would no longer flow so easily and the memorial ceremony at his grave would be less gut-wrenching. But watching his mother Judith’s eyes fill with tears, and listening to his younger brother Shimon’s voice crack as he shared his thoughts, made me lose it all over again. Just last week, Shimon related, his four-year old daughter had asked why Benjy had died before she had a chance to meet him; how do you respond to a question like that?

There is a fascinating episode in this week’s portion Mattot, which relates to this question.

The tribes of Reuven and Gad, desiring the vast grazing lands of Gilad and Ya’azer (areas recently conquered by the Israelites from Amon and Moab) present a startling request before Moshe: after 40 years wandering in the desert, they ask Moshe for the grazing lands across the Jordan, rather than enter the land of Israel. Moshe is appalled: “Will your brothers go to war while you sit here?” (Bamidbar 32:6) As Moshe points out, this is reminiscent of the mistake their fathers made in the sin of the spies when they desired to remain in

the desert; indeed this could undermine everything and demotivate the entire Jewish people!

So the Reubenites and Gaddites respond with a counteroffer: “We will enter the land with you and fight in the vanguard; we will lead the way and we will not return to our lands across the Jordan until the rest of the Jewish people have inherited their lands.”

Moshe accepts this response and indeed they fulfill their promise by leading the people in battle and not returning to their promised lands until the war is over and the other tribes have inherited their own lands. (Joshua 6:7) Jewish tradition is replete with descriptions of this story as the paradigm of a healthy compromise.

Indeed, the Talmud (Baba Kama 20b) describes this as a clever conflict resolution which allows everyone to benefit. The Jewish people gain because the tribes of Reuven and Gad will lead them into battle, and the Reubenites and Gaddites gain the fertile land they desire.

But one wonders why these tribes volunteered to lead Israel into battle, putting themselves most at risk; why not simply join them in battle?

Moshe’s greatest fear might have been the dangerous impact a separate unit of tribes on the Eastern banks of the Jordan river might

have on the unity of the nation, as witness a story that indeed takes place in the book of Joshua (chap. 22). Fourteen years later, after the battles have been fought and won, and the Jewish people have inherited the land of Israel, the men of the tribes of Gad and Reuben finally return home. Their erection of an altar to G-d sparks an uproar among the other tribes and nearly leads to a civil war!

Fearful that these tribes are separating themselves from the people and the beliefs of Israel, the other tribes send a delegation to ascertain the intentions of Reuven and Gad. They are appeased and even approve when the two tribes explain that the altar was built as a symbol of unity, lest the children of Israel one day think that the river that separates them physically also separates them spiritually. Rather, they explain, we are one While they desired the lush lands along the Jordan, they did not want this to be interpreted as a desire to separate themselves from the rest of the Jewish people. And this is what drove them to lead in battle: a deep burning love for their fellow Jews..

And that why Benji Hillman, H”YD, called to leave Ayala, the love of his life less than a month after their wedding, he was willing to risk everything for the Jewish people and, as did the men of Reuben and Gad, he fearlessly

All of which leaves us with a final question: what would we be willing to give up everything for? Is there something in this world, someone, we would be willing to die for? Are there principles that are really more important than life itself? Can a land be so important? teve Jobs, in his commencement address to the graduating Stanford class of 2005, reflected on his struggle after being fired from Apple, the company he had founded at the age of 20, which had by then, ten years later, become a 2 billion dollar company with over 4,000 employees. He thought he had lost it all, and then realized he still loved what he did. He had been rejected, but he was still in love.

So he decided to start all over again, eventually founding Pixar, the most successful animation studio in the world. “Sometimes,” reflected Jobs, “life will hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. Find and stick with what and whom you love, and great things will happen.”

Two thousand years ago it seemed as though we had lost everything. We had been rejected, by our land, by the world, and maybe even by G-d. But we never gave up; we stuck with our true love, with G-d, and with Israel, and now we have come back home, to the land we love. And we are blessed with leaders like Benjy Hillman who remind us, every day, that there are things in this world worth fighting for.

Giving Reubenites and Gaddites benefit of doubt RABBI AVI BILLET PARSHA OF THE WEEK

E

ver since the blessing given to the Tribe of Gad by Yaakov in the middle of Parshat Vaychi, Gad has been considered to be the greatest soldier, and set of soldiers, known to Israel.

So well known is this fact, that every image for Gad that I have ever seen in artwork depicting the tribes always has Gad represented as field-tents or soldiers. No other tribe shares such a distinction.

When the tribes of Reuven and Gad, who traveled together (along with the recentlydevastated tribe of Shimon) in the wilderness come to Moshe in Chapter 32 asking to settle in the land conquered from Sichon and Og, their request does not seem that odd. If, after all, they had led the troops in battle against those enemies, they may have been the first to observe and take note of the topography, to determine this land would mean a great economic boom for their tribes.

They list the particular lands and cities they want, explaining that they want to put roots here for “[in] the land that G-d struck down before the Israelite community is livestock land - and what we have is livestock’.”

This is not crazy. They see an opportunity, so they want to capitalize on it.

They know it is very close to the Promised Land. And yet, they say, “If you would grant us a favor, let this land be given to us as our permanent property, and do not bring

us across the Jordan.”

There are different ways to understand their request.

Are they saying they don’t want to go across the Jordan at all? Or are they saying they don’t want to shlep their families along?

Do they make any mention of what role they intend to play or not play on the coming battlefield? As a matter of fact, these questions are not addressed at all.

Instead, Moshe goes on a 10-verse tirade about how they’re committing the same sin as the spies and the people of that generation who revolted against the Land.

Arguably the only legitimate response Moshe has is a fair concern: “Moses said to the descendants of Gad and Reuven, ‘Why should your brothers go out and fight while you stay here’?” (32:6) We can skip to their response in 32:16-19 when they completely ignore all of Moshe’s comments, responding only to the one about serving at the battlefront. “[The Reubenites and Gaddites] approached [Moses] and said, ‘We will build enclosures for our sheep here and cities for our children. But we will then arm ourselves and go as an advance guard before the [other] Israelites, [fighting] until we have brought them to their homeland. Because of the area’s inhabitants, our children will remain in fortified cities, but we ourselves will not return home until every Israelite has taken possession of his hereditary property.

We, however, will not take possession with them on the far side of the Jordan, since our inheritance shall come to us on the Jordan’s eastern bank.’”

In other words: “You are right, Moshe. We do not intend to leave our brothers to fight their battles alone. We will be there as well.

But we don’t want our families and animals to be waiting in limbo for however long these battles will take. As far as all your concerns of our hate for the Land, on par with those of the spies, we will not even dignify them with a response.”

Was Moshe right or wrong here? Did he discern something that was there, or something that wasn’t there? Were the Reuvenites and Gadites only selfish, or were they practical? Did they denigrate the Land? Were they looking to abandon the rest of the Israelite nation? Or were they always intending to join for the battles, and perhaps they merely neglected to mention such plans?

Perhaps we’ll never know the answers to these questions. But I wonder how things would have turned out if Moshe had ended his response in 32:6 — asking about their plans to participate in battles — rather than waxing poetic about their hatred-of-the-land on par with that of the spies’?

I like to think the message would have come across — and their clarification would have been — concise and very much to the point.

How can we judge people without hearing them out, or without giving them a chance?

T

his is a flaw we have when we judge people based on either preconceived notions, or if we apply our own experiences to a similar but different circumstance in which we are currently involved.

“I know the score. This happens all the time.” “Every time I’ve seen this, it always ends out the same.” “Anyone who has ever done this has been untrustworthy, or has given up before completing the job. You’ll be no different.”

How do we know? How can we judge people without hearing them out, or without giving them a chance?

Just because others have been one way, or have failed, does not mean everyone will.

And from another perspective, just because someone has been successful in the past does not mean the person will be the godsend being sought.

Open communication, clarification, and giving people a chance are some of the ingredients that make the thrill of life more navigable for all. Will things be perfect, always?

No. And anyone who thinks it will be is at best naïve.

But our life is one lived with others, and we have to do our best to include others, share concerns for ourselves and for others, and do what we can to help others through their struggles, as we hope they will help us through ours’.

If we can be blessed to not be so judgmental, and to not project our own insecurities on others, maybe we’ll never have to be the people who are the recipients of “I’m not even going to dignify that comment with a response” because we will have selected our words carefully in the first place.

From this new perspective, in the eyes of these Arab rulers Israel is beginning to look not like an enemy, but rather like a potential ally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;An Iranian nuclear bomb scares the wits out of them. They see little future for themselves in a Middle East dominated by an Iran with nuclear weapons in its arsenal. Most threatened is the Saudi ruling class who are likely to be the ďŹ rst in line to be toppled as Iranian inďŹ&#x201A;uence grows. They surely must have quietly applauded Benjamin Netanyahu as he appeared in front of both Houses of the U.S. Congress in March to make the case against a nuclear armed Iran. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Israeli opposition may have criticized him, but the Saudis were surely on his side. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This deal does nothing to stop and little to verify Iranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nuclear sites, allows the rogue nation to become a stronger power in the gulf threatening not just Israel, but Americas â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;moderateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gulf state partners.

And in the end moves the gulf region much closer to war. By Josef Federman JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.S.-led nuclear deal with Iran on Tuesday dealt a heavy personal blow to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, leaving him at odds with the international community and with few options for scuttling an agreement he has spent years trying to prevent.

Netanyahu condemned the deal as a “stunning historic mistake,” saying it would not prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons capability. It also did nothing to address the Islamic Republic’s support for hostile militant groups, he said.

Addressing reporters in English, a grim-faced Netanyahu said he was not bound by the deal, which eases sanctions in exchange for curbs on the suspect Iranian nuclear program, and strongly hinted that military action remains an option.

“Israel is not bound by this deal with Iran because Iran continues to seek our destruction,” he said. “We will always defend ourselves.”

Netanyahu’s opposition to the deal was shared by his political rivals who angrily criticized it, reflecting widespread opposition to the deal in Israel.

Iran “is a regime based in deceit, and now they are going to do what they did for the last 20 years, which is trying to get themselves nuclear weapons behind the back of the world,” said Yair Lapid, the head of the opposition Yesh Atid Party.

For Netanyahu, the deal represented perhaps one of the greatest defeats of his three-decadelong political career. Netanyahu has spent years lecturing audiences about the dangers of a nuclear-armed Iran, often describing his battle against Iran as the mission of his lifetime. He has railed against Iran in high-profile speeches at the United Nations, and last March, voiced his opposition to the emerging deal in a speech to the U.S. Congress that enraged the White House.

The White House announced late Tuesday that President Barack Obama had spoken to Netanyahu and told him the deal won’t lessen U.S. concerns about Iran’s support for militant groups and its threats toward Israel. Obama said a planned visit to Israel next week by U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter reflects the high level of security cooperation between the two allies.

But apparently neither Obama’s conciliatory

language nor Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s assurances earlier in the day that Iran will “never” seek a nuclear weapon calmed the Israeli leader.

Netanyahu said the agreement would lift painful economic sanctions against Iran — bringing in a much needed influx of funds — without stopping it from developing a capacity to produce nuclear weapons.

“This cash bonanza will fuel Iran’s terrorism worldwide, its aggression in region, and its efforts to destroy Israel, which are ongoing,” he said.

Netanyahu has repeatedly criticized Iran’s support for hostile groups like the Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah, and calls by Iranian leaders for Israel’s destruction.

Netanyahu also said the deal “repeats the mistakes” of an earlier international agreement with North Korea, in which a system of inspections and verifications failed to prevent the country from developing a nuclear weapons capability.

He said that in a decade, when key aspects of the Iranian deal expire, “an unreformed, un-

repentant and far richer terrorist regime” will emerge with the ability to make “an entire nuclear arsenal with the means to deliver it.”

“What a stunning historic mistake,” he said.

As for Israel’s first course of action — the expected intense lobbying in the U.S. Congress — there is little that can be done against the deal despite strong Republican opposition, mainly because Obama doesn’t need Congressional approval.

Under an agreement that Obama struck with lawmakers, Congress has 60 days to review the agreement before he can start easing sanctions.

Lawmakers will likely try to derail it by passing new sanctions or preventing Obama from lifting existing sanctions — the key incentive for Iran to comply with the deal.

Obama on Tuesday threatened to veto any resolutions from Congress seeking to undermine the deal, meaning opponents would have to muster a two-thirds majority in Congress to override the veto. That would require dozens of Democrats to vote against the president, which appears unlike-

ly. Obama could also use his presidential powers to offer substantial sanctions relief on his own.

Likewise, the odds of taking unilateral military action appear slim.

Israel has long warned that the military option is real, but it refrained from taking action due to the risky nature of a long-range operation and because of opposition from its allies. A military strike would now become even riskier, given the widespread international backing for the deal.

Netanyahu may seek to strengthen what he says is a behind-the-scenes alliance with U.S.allied Gulf Arab governments that share Israel’s fear that the deal will not prevent Iran from building a bomb.

Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia issued a pointed warning late Tuesday, saying that Iran must use any economic gains from the lifting of sanctions to improve the lives of Iranians, “rather than using them to cause turmoil in the region, a matter that will meet a decisive reaction from the nations of the region,” according to a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency. Elsewhere in the Arab world, Egypt called the deal an important development while the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait welcomed the agreement.

Many in the Gulf and hard-line Sunnis fear the deal would boost the Shiite-led Iran’s push to spread its influence even more in the Arab world.

“Iran is moving according to a well-studied, clear vision, absorbing its adversaries,” tweeted one prominent Saudi cleric, Salman al-Ouda.

“Where are the Arab governments?

Netanyahu’s Israeli opposition said the prime minister was at least partly to blame for the setback, saying that he had unnecessarily antagonized the U.S. and other allies.

Netanyahu called on all sides to “put petty politics aside” and unite behind opposing Iran.

Yoaz Hendel, a former Netanyahu spokesman, said Tuesday’s deal marked a “big failure” for his former boss. But he said some of the criticism was unfair, saying the U.S. had acted to protect its own interests and even at times of warm relations, past prime ministers have lost important diplomatic battles with American presidents.

“I’m not sure a personal relationship and personal feelings would change anything,” he said.

Arab world worries over boost to Iran’s power

By Adam Schreck and Lee Keath DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The nuclear deal with Iran was met with a profound wariness in the Arab world, where concerns are widespread that the easing of its international isolation could tip the already bloody contest for power in the region toward Shiite-led Tehran.

Arab countries have deep fears of Iran gaining a nuclear weapon, and some have been skeptical that a deal will prevent that from happening. But equally high for key Sunni-dominated Gulf allies of the United States is the worry that a deal gives Iran the means — through an economic windfall — and an implicit green light to push influence in the region.

The Arab world has been polarized for years in a worsening proxy conflict between Iran and Gulf powers, particularly Saudi Arabia, fueling Sunni-Shiite tensions and stoking wars. In Syria, Iran’s support has ensured the survival of President Bashar Assad against Sunni rebels backed

by Gulf nations in a devastating civil war, now in its fifth year. Yemen has been torn apart this year as Saudi Arabia, leading a coalition air campaign, has tried to help fend off Shiite rebels supported

by Tehran. In Iraq, Saudi Arabia has opposed the growing power of Iran even since the 2003 ouster of Saddam Hussein and the rise of a government led by Shiite politicians close to Iran.

“Deal or no deal, tension in the region is not going to go away,” said Abdulkhaleq Abdullah, a professor of political science at United Arab Emirates University. “If Iran is bent on acting as a hegemon, as a regional power, I think we are in for some difficult times.”

from the nations of the region,” in a statement carried on the state news agency late Tuesday.

Other Gulf monarchies sought to show some cautious optimism. The president of the United Arab Emirates, which has longstanding trade ties to Iran, and the emir of Kuwait, who visited Tehran last year in an effort to improve relations, each sent congratulations to Iran and expressed hope the agreement will contribute to regional security and stability.

On the nuclear issue itself, Arab countries have shown skepticism that a deal would stop Iran from building a weapon. In its statement Tuesday, Saudi Arabia withheld judgment on the final accord, but underlined it always wanted an agreement that guarantees Iran cannot develop a bomb, includes a strict inspection mechanism for all sites — including military ones — and ensures a swift re-imposition of sanctions if Tehran violates the deal.

Saudi Arabia’s former intelligence chief, Prince Turki al-Faisal, warned earlier this year that a deal might fuel a regional arms race.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Badr Abdelattie, said his country hopes the deal would be “a step toward a region free of nuclear weapons”— a project Egypt has been lobbying for in the United Nations for long, with its eyes on Israel’s all but confirmed arsenal.

But foremost on the minds of Iran’s opponents in the region was the worry that the deal strengthens its hand in the region’s conflicts.

“This agreement, from our point of view, represents an indirect threat to Gulf and Arab interests and peace,” said Tariq Al-Shammari, a Saudi analyst and president of the Council of Gulf International Relations.

Behind the scenes, he said, Gulf Arab countries will work to try and keep Iran isolated po-

litically and economically, he added, pointing out that Saudi Arabia in particular has already moved to improve ties with Russia, which is a strong ally of Iran.

Syrian rebels were alarmed, warning that now Iran will feel free to infuse even more cash and weapons to prop up Assad’s overstretched army.

“This agreement translates into more barrel bombs, more massacres and more blood across Syria,” said a rebel with the Islamic al-Jabha alShamiya faction in northern Syria who spoke on condition he be identified by his nom de guerre of Abu Yasser, for his own safety. Barrel bombs are the crude but destructive bombs dropped from Syrian military aircraft that have caused considerable civilian casualties.

He said an Iran at peace with the international community will feel “even more at ease” to implement its agenda across the region, including in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

On the pro-government side in Syria, some had the same expectation. Bassam Mahfouz, a 54-year-old resident of the capital, Damascus, said he hoped Iran will now increase its support for Syria in the fight against “terrorism.

Assad was quick to congratulate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani. In his cable addressed to Khamenei, Assad described the deal as “a great victory” achieved by Iran and a “historic turning point” in the history of Iran, the region and the world.

“We are quite assured that the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue, with greater momentum, supporting the just issues of nations,” he said.

President Barack Obama acknowledged Tuesday that the U.S. and Iran remain at odds over many issues, including Tehran’s support for terrorism in the Middle East and its detention of several American citizens. Still, he suggested a

breakthrough on the nuclear issue could pave the way for a broader shift in relations between the U.S. and Iran.

“This deal offers an opportunity to move in a new direction,” Obama said. “We should seize it.”

Supporters of the deal see that opening as an opportunity to try to moderate Iran’s role in the region.

In Iraq, the complex sectarian fault lines make the deal’s impact hard to read. The IranU.S. and Iran-Saudi rivalries have fueled tensions in the country for years. At the same time, Iran and the U.S. have recently found themselves on the same side fighting against the Islamic State group, though they have avoided working with each other.

Saad al-Hadithi, the spokesman for Iraq’s Shiite prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, called the deal “a catalyst for regional stability” that will lead to better unity in the fight against terrorism.

Hamid al-Mutlaq, an Iraqi Sunni lawmaker, was more cautious. “We hope now to see a positive Iranian interference, not a negative one in the region, and to change the way it sees and deals with people of the regional countries,” he said.

But Sunni hard-liners in the Arab world were convinced the deal signals U.S. acquiescence to the spread of Iranian power.

One prominent Saudi Muslim cleric, Salman al-Ouda, who is often critical of the Saudi government, warned in a tweet that “Iran is moving according to a well-studied clear vision, absorbing its adversaries. Where are the Arab governments? Where is their alternative project to face the challenge?”

A hard-line Qatari cleric, Mohammed alShinqiti, tweeted that in return for limiting Iran’s nuclear program, “America has something to offer Iran: An Arab world open for its wars.”

Along with six group aliyah ďŹ&#x201A;ights and olim arriving independently on a daily basis, more than 2,000 olim are making aliyah through Nefesh Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Nefesh this summer, with the total for 2015 expected to reach 4,000.

Since 2002, Nefesh Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Nefesh, together with its partners, has brought 45,000 olim to Israel from the U.S., Canada and England.
