Facing intense pressure from liberal quarters — including from some students and alumni of Ramaz, the Upper East Side Jewish day school he led for decades — Rabbi Haskel Lookstein declined an invitation to deliver a benediction at this week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

The Republican National Committee sparked the rhubarb when it included Rabbi Lookstein — who worked with Ivanka Trump on her conversion — in a list of speakers, without specifying that his role would have been to deliver an invocation. “Like my father before me, I have never been involved in politics,�

Rabbi Lookstein said in a statement to the Ramaz School and Kehilath Jeshurun family. “Politics divides people. My life has been devoted to uniting a community — Ahavat Yisrael and ahavat ha-adam.�

This is the prayer Rabbi Lookstein said he had intended to deliver: Rabbi Chanina, the Deputy High Priest, said: “Pray for the welfare of the government — for were it not for respect for it, people would swallow one another alive.�

Eternal G-d: We thank you for this blessed nation that for 240 years has translated into reality the Biblical command to “proclaim liberty throughout the land for all the inhabitants thereof.�

We thank you for our constitutional government that has created and fostered the American ideals of democracy, freedom, justice and equality for all, regardless of race, religion or national origin.

By Jeffrey F. Barken, JNS.org Israel has reached an important milestone in its development as a nation, says Jewish National Fund CEO Russell F. Robinson. “I think this is our moment of real Zionism.”

For Robinson, Israel showcases a triumph of the human spirit. Following the Holocaust, the nascent Jewish state was initially impoverished and represented “the gathering of the exiles,” but the new Israel “is a place where people can go by choice,” he reflects. The dynamic career, spiritual, and lifestyle opportunities that Israel now affords both visitors and prospective immigrants have prompted JNF to reconsider its mission.

“Zionism is maturing,” Robinson says, explaining that instead of organizing to ensure Israel’s survival, “now we get to be Israel’s greatest partner.”

As such, JNF has in recent years rolled out several programs geared towards creating awareness of Israeli culture and stimulating investment in Israeli public works projects. Each year, the Faculty Fellowship Summer Institute in Israel program, a partnership between JNF and Media Watch International, introduces twodozen university faculty members of diverse and predominately non-Jewish backgrounds to Israel. The initiative is now in its ninth year.

“We have over 120 graduates of the 10-day program,” Robinson says, “and thanks to increased donor funding, we have been able to expand dramatically.”

The program facilitates an academic exchange. Participants are introduced to, or are paired with, Israeli counterparts in their field of study, thereby prompting collaboration, shared research, and an exchange of teaching concepts and values. Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, Bar-Ilan University, University of Haifa, Technion Israel Institute of Technology, and several other Israeli institutions all have partnered with JNF on the summer institute program.

Volunteer Vacation. This program enables in-dividuals to visit southern Israel, where they assist in building new communities. Likewise, the Sunshine Tour with Hal Linden and JNF’s Culinary Tour offer travelers an opportunity to experience Israeli cuisine by participating in hands-on workshops with top Israeli chefs. Between the popular Birthright Israel program and these new initiatives, JNF has made it possible for nearly 16,000 foreigners to visit Israel annually.

“The [programs go] beyond the confines of conflict and demonstrate how Israel makes the world a better place,” Robinson says.

The programs also reflect changing perceptions of Israel held by Diaspora Jews as well as Israelis themselves. An optimistic narrative is emerging from the decades of turmoil that characterized Israel’s birth and struggle for survival. Perhaps unintentionally, author Jonathan Safran Foer’s story, “Maybe it was the Dis-

tance,” published in The New Yorker in June, echoes Robinson’s assertion that Israel has achieved stability and has both a proud history and a bright future ahead.

In “Maybe it was the Distance,” Grandfather Irv, his 43-year-old son Jacob, and his 11-yearold grandson Max pick up their “Israeli cousins” at Reagan International Airport in Washington.

After collecting Jacob’s cousin Tamir and his son Barak, the family quickly engages in a heated discussion about the Jewish state.

Fending off doubt-driven questions concerning Israel’s protracted water crisis, hostile enemies, and the seemingly irresolvable situation, Tamir insists, “Israel is thriving. … Things have never been better, anywhere, at any time.”

“Walk down the streets of Tel Aviv one night,” he suggests.

“There’s more culture per square foot than anywhere in the world. Look at our economy.

We’re sixty-eight years old. … We have only eight million people, no natural resources, and are engaged in perpetual warfare. All that and we file more patents every year than any other country, including yours,” Foer writes.

The above passage illustrates how, despite enduring decades of conflict, Israelis today enjoy cultural prosperity, and the so-called “start-up nation” has made the world take notice through its numerous technological innovations.

Founded in 1901, JNF’s philanthropy echoes the foundations of Israel. The country’s original borders were drawn around land JNF had purchased during Ottoman rule and the British Mandate.

During the past 113 years in Israel, JNF has planted more than 250 million trees in Israel, built more than 240 reservoirs and dams, developed more than 250,000 acres of land, and created more than 2,000 parks, according to the organization’s website.

Robinson regrets that what he describes as a shallowly conceived, incendiary, and emotional discourse prompted by traditional news media casts a pall over Israel’s achievements.

“To be sure, there are blemishes,” he admits when reflecting on Israel’s history. He suggests, however, that Israel has allowed its record to become tarnished in part because “Jews have a fear of talking about [their accomplishments].”

Consequently, Robinson and JNF advocate that Israel refocus the discussion.

“Why can’t we start a conversation about Israel from a positive perspective?” Robinson asks.

“No other culture in the history of the world has come back from a water crisis like the one Israel faced 20 years ago,” he notes. Today, Jordan and some of Israel’s other neighbors eagerly embrace Israeli water technologies and methods.

“The biggest thing people want is hope,” Robinson says.

By Alina Dain Sharon, JNS.org British-Jewish and pro-Israel groups are congratulating Home Secretary Theresa May for winning the leadership of the Conservative Party and replacing outgoing United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron, who resigned following the U.K.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to leave the European Union (EU) in the Brexit referendum last month.

Theresa May has repeatedly shown herself as â&#x20AC;&#x153;a committed and conscientious friend to both Israel and Jewish communities in the U.K.,â&#x20AC;? Paul Charney, chairman of the Zionist Federation of the United Kingdom, told JNS. org. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have no doubt that should the safety of either [community] come under threat, she will stand ďŹ rm in our defense. Under David Cameron, the relationship between Israel and the U.K. remained warm and open, and we look forward to that positive relationship continuing under May,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appointment comes at a challenging time for British Jews. The Conservative Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rival Labour Party was recently mired in a controversy over anti-Semitism. There were as many as 50 reported suspensions of Labour parliament members for anti-Semitic remarks, including of Labour MP Naz Shah and former London Mayor Ken Livingstone.

Shah was later reinstated. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn also came under ďŹ re for a recent apparent comparison of Israel to the Islamic State terror group.

In her capacity as home secretary, a position responsible for the internal affairs of England and Wales, May had promised to defend the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewish community and wipe out anti-Semitism. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one wants the school where they

By Jeffrey Bessen The Cedarhurst Business Improvement District’s Summer Sidewalk Sale is a revenue generator that attracts upward of 10,000 people to the village over four days, and organizers hope that in its 28th year, it will once again be a shopping and commercial bonanza for patrons and merchants alike.

This year it will take place Wednesday, July 20, from 10 am to 8 pm; Thursday, July 21, from 10 am to 6 pm; Friday, July 22, from 10 am to closing; and Sunday, July 24, from 1 to 6 pm. Prompted by customer requests, Sunday was added three years ago.

More than 80 stores take part, offering sale items and specially discounted merchandise, and shoppers can choose from jewelry, cloth-

ing, beauty products, Judaica and kosher food along Central and Cedarhurst avenues as well as side streets.

“One only needs to drive by during any of these events to see that every store is flowing with customers, and every Cedarhurst parking lot is filled to capacity,” Teri Shure, the Business Improvement District’s executive director, said of the event, which complements the Black Friday/Saturday Night Midnight Madness sales each November.

According to Shure, Five Towns residents aren’t the only ones who take advantage of the bargains: Shoppers also come from nearby communities including Bayswater, East Rockaway, Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Lynbrook, Malverne, Rockville Centre and Valley Stream,

as well as Great Neck, many areas of Brooklyn and Queens, and as far away as Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut.

“We know where the customers are coming from based upon the thousands of addresses on the raffle forms that shoppers coming for the event fill out in hopes of winning the $1,000 Cedarhurst Shopping Spree,” Shure said. “Last year, over 6,500 raffle tickets were filled out.” A raffle form is printed on page 2 of this week’s Jewish Star.

Dimples, a clothing and gift stores for infants and toddlers on Central Avenue, has taken part in the sidewalk sale for 10 years since opening in 2005, said owner Cindy Merrill.

“It’s a fun time for the community, and I love to see all the moms out,” she said. “I love

the exposure for the store. We have some good deals, and we can move some remaining merchandise.”

In his seventh year of being part of the event, Music Hub owner Michael Dworetsky said it’s great to be outside and to be able to play music — loudly. Dworetsk said he promotes the musical instruction the store offers in piano, drums and guitar as well as the sale of new and used instruments.

“The summer sale draws a lot of people to Central Avenue, and we have a lot of instruments out,” he said. “You can really learn about your neighbors and see things you normally wouldn’t. It generates sales during the summertime, when it’s slow with the kids away at camp.”

RNC kills chat to KO hate talk The Republican National Convention on Monday disabled the live chat feature on its official live stream YouTube page after it was bombarded with anti-Semitic comments during a speech by Linda Lingle, the Jewish former governor of Hawaii.

Lingle spoke about the division in Democratic leadership on support for Israel, in contrast to the position of the Republican Party on the Jewish state.

“On one issue after another, from Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions to the Iran nuclear agreement, to the very legitimacy of Israel, they’re divided,” Lingle said about Democrats. “You’ll find no such divisions in the Republican Party’s leadership.”

The mayor of Atlanta on Monday said that Israeli police officers will continue to train the Atlanta police department despite demands made by ALTisREADY, a group affiliated with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.

“There was a demand that I stop allowing the Atlanta Police Department to train with the Israeli police department,” Mayor Reed said at a press conference. “I’m not going to do that. I happen to believe that the Israeli police department has some of the best counter-terrorism techniques in the world and it benefits our police department from that long-standing relationship.”

ALTisREADY lists on its website that “the people demand a termination to APD’s involvement in the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange (GILEE) program, that trains our officers in Apartheid Israel.”

This is not the first time that the cause of the BLM movement has become conflated with a pro-Palestinian cause. On July 7 the NYU branch of the group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) posted on Facebook that “many U.S. police departments train with the Israeli Defense Forces,” and these are “the same forces behind the genocide of black people in America are behind the genocide of Palestinians. Higher stakes in Lebanon’s next war BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT

A

decade after fighting the Second Lebanon War against the Islamist terror militia Hezbollah, Israel is again facing a buildup on its northern border, with the prospect of fresh hostilities looming.

The 2006 conflict, waged over a month during the hot summer, was the culmination of six years of rocket attacks by Hezbollah on cities and towns in northern Israel.

By the time that war broke out, Hezbollah had taken advantage of Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 to assemble 15,000 fighters and thousands of missiles aimed in the direction of the Jewish state.

On July 12, 2006, Hezbollah terrorists infiltrated Israel off the back of a deadly mortar shell and rocket assault on the northern town of Shlomi. An IDF patrol on the Israeli side of the border was ambushed by the infiltrators, who killed three soldiers and abducted two.

For almost two weeks after that outrage, Israel restricted its response to air attacks and artillery fire against Hezbollah positions. But Hezbollah’s refusal to return the kidnapped soldiers and adhere to a ceasefire resulted in an Israeli ground invasion.

The war officially ended on Aug. 14, though the two kidnapped soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, were not returned until two years later, in coffins, following their murder by Hezbollah. The cessation of hostilities was rooted in U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which called for the complete disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon and for full authority to be restored to the state. It also called for the removal of foreign forces from Lebanon; the bodies of several Iranian Revolutionary Guards were reported to be among the hundreds of Hezbollah fighters killed by the IDF. en years on from the trauma and devastation visited upon Israeli and Lebanese civilians alike, Hezbollah is stron-

ger than ever in southern Lebanon, and still faithful to its tactic of embedding itself within the civilian population—a war crime that Hamas in Gaza is also guilty of. Far from disbanding, as mandated by the U.N. Security Council, Hezbollah fighters have been refining their battlefield skills in the defense of Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorship in neighboring Syria.

This last point is worth dwelling on, because it illustrates the comprehensive transformation of the Middle East’s security environment since the 2006 war.

The hope of democratic change ushered in by the mass protests against the Islamist regime in Iran in 2009 was quickly expunged by Tehran’s brutal response. Similar civil society uprisings across the region resulted in extraordinary scenes of brutality. But nothing has come close to Syria, which collapsed into civil war in 2011, with more than half of its population losing their homes and up to 400,000 killed. he cost of the Syrian war upon Lebanon has been merciless. The Lebanese population of 4.5 million has now been joined by a staggering 1.5 million Syrians.

Alongside this humanitarian crisis is a political one. Lebanon has not had a president since the stalemate election of 2014, a dire situation fully exploited by Hezbollah, which has never respected Lebanon’s sovereignty and which regards the republic as little more than a staging post for its attacks on Israel.

The stakes of another war involving Israel, then, are frighteningly higher this time around. A war in Lebanon at the same time as the slaughter continues in Syria—where the presence of the Iranians, the Russians, and the barbarians of Islamic State all represent distinct and deadly threats—risks evolving into a wider conflict.

Of immediate concern to the Israelis is Hezbollah’s military buildup in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has moved most of its military hardware into the Shi’a villages of southern Lebanon, deliberately transforming

thousands of innocent civilians into human shields. Indeed, some sense of the scale of a future Lebanese conflict can be gleaned from the fact that Hezbollah now possesses 130,000 missiles—10 times what it had in 2006, and more than every NATO country with the exception of the United States.

As unmistakeable a signal of intent as Hezbollah’s arsenal is, another war is not inevitable. The international leader with the most leverage in this situation is not U.S. President Barack Obama, who has effectively abandoned Syria and Lebanon, but Russian dictator President Vladimir Putin, who together with the Iranians has propped up Assad, and dispatched air and ground forces to assist his bloody regime.

Putin has met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu four times in the last year, and the Hezbollah threat was a key topic of their conversations. The Russians clearly do not object to occasional Israeli bombing raids on Hezbollah convoys traveling towards the Golan Heights, but their response to a fullscale war might not be so indulgent. till, rather than risk a conflict with Netanyahu, who has made Israel’s objection to Hezbollah weapons transfers through Syria abundantly clear in their meetings, Putin has an opportunity to show himself as a peacemaker of sorts. The price of securing the survival of Assad, he can tell the Iranian and Hezbollah allies of the Syrian dictator, is that Israel’s borders cannot be breached.

The question is whether, and for how long, such a Pax Russiana can be sustained.

Israel is rightly preparing for the worst-case option, with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot warning that “Israel will use all of our power to destroy Hezbollah militarily.”

Ten years after the pronouncements of Resolution 1701 came to naught, that, regrettably, may be the only way of disarming them for good.

GOP’s unradical shift on 2 state fix RAFAEL MEDOFF

T

he omission of Palestinian statehood from this year’s Republican Party platform is neither a radical change nor a departure from immutable U.S. policy, as some critics are claiming. In fact, both parties’ platforms have repeatedly changed positions on Israel-related issues over the years, in keeping with the preference of the presidential nominee or the changing mood among their rank and file.

The first time the Republican platform mentioned a Palestinian state was in 1980. In that year’s race, GOP nominee Ronald Reagan positioned himself as the pro-Israel candidate, after four years of clashes between President Jimmy Carter, Israel, and the American Jewish community. The Republican platform followed accordingly: “We believe the establishment of a Palestinian State on the West Bank would be destabilizing and harmful to the peace process.”

The next three Republican platforms echoed these sentiments, characterizing a Palestinian state as “inimical to the security

interests of Israel, Jordan and the U.S.,” and rejecting the notion that Israel should even negotiate with “the Palestine Liberation Organization and its homicidal subsidiaries,” much less give them a state.

But in 1996, after 16 years of explicit opposition to Palestinian statehood, the Republicans shifted. During the preceding three years, Yasser Arafat had recognized Israel, the Israeli army had withdrawn from significant portions of the territories, and the creation of a Palestinian state seemed increasingly likely. As a result, the 1996 GOP platform dropped the party’s longstanding opposition to Palestinian statehood and said only that it “support[s] Israel’s right to make its own decisions regarding security and boundaries.”

But four years later, the party shifted again. Four years of suicide bombings, “jihad” speeches by Arafat, and frequent Palestinian violations of the Oslo Accords fueled skepticism among Republicans about Palestinian statehood. The Palestinian Authority’s threats to unilaterally declare a state seemed likely to ignite new turmoil. The 2000 Republican platform asserted: “A unilateral declaration of independence by the Palestinians would be a violation of [the two sides’] commitment [to resolving disputes through negotiations]. A new Republican administration would oppose any such declaration.”

oon the platform was shifting again, to accommodate a Republican president. In 2002, George W. Bush became the first president to endorse creation of a Palestinian state, and the 2004 GOP platform echoed his position—but with conditions. While embracing “President Bush’s vision of two states,” the platform added that “for such a vision to become a reality, the Palestinians need a new leadership, not compromised by terror…If Palestinians embrace democracy and the rule of law, confront corruption, and firmly reject terror, they can count on American support for the creation of a Palestinian state.”

In 2008 and 2012, the Republican platform again attached conditions to its endorsement of Palestinian statehood. For a Palestinian state to become “a reality,” it said, “the Palestinian people must support leaders who reject terror, embrace the institutions and ethos of democracy, and respect the rule of law.”

Those conditions are the key to understanding this year’s decision to omit the “two states” formula from the GOP platform. For 12 years, Republicans have been waiting for a “new Palestinian leadership,” one that is “not compromised by terror” and “embraces democracy.” Instead, they see a continuation of Arafat’s leadership through his loyal deputy, Mahmoud Abbas. O

ne of the conclusions of an IDF review of the Tzuk Eitan (Defensive Shield) war fought in Gaza in the summer of 2014 was that it was a bad idea to have encouraged soldiers to write letters to their loved ones prior to entering Gaza. Apparently, soldiers were given time and encouragement to write letters that would be forwarded to loved ones in the event they did not come back from the ďŹ ghting.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong â&#x20AC;&#x201D; writing such a letter is something every soldier should do, and through all the years I spent time in Lebanon and intense reserve duties in places like the Gaza strip, Ramallah, Hebron, Shechem and Jenin, I always had such a letter in my breast pocket and, later, after I got married and had kids, left at home in a place I knew would be found in the eventâ&#x20AC;Ś But I always wrote them long before I headed off to reserve duty. The idea of all the soldiers in a unit being told by their commanders, as they prepared for combat, to write such letters is a really bad idea. The conclusion of the IDF report was that this had a terrible impact on morale and as a practice should be discontinued.

Indeed, it brings to mind one of the fascinating questions in this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portion Balak.

The entire parsha revolves around the desire of Balak, the king of Moab, to see the Jewish people cursed by Balaam, the great sorcerer of the ancient pagan world. Balak, having just witnessed the vanquishing by Israel of the mighty Amorite army, realizes the Jews cannot be conquered on the battleďŹ eld, so he entices Balaam to curse the Jews. And the Torah shares the dialogue with us as G-d prevents

Balaam from cursing the Jewish people.

Seriously? And if Balaam had indeed cursed the Jewish people, would all have been lost?

Doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Hashem run the world? What difference does it make whether a pagan prophet curses the Jewish people? Do we believe in witches and sorcerers and ancient spells and incantations?

Nechama Leibowitz quotes Rav Yosef Ibn Caspi as suggesting that the question was not whether such curses would come true (clearly we do not believe in such curses). Rather, it would have impacted the morale of the Jewish people. The Jews, still inďŹ&#x201A;uenced by over 200 years of servitude in ancient Egypt, might have felt cursed, and if you believe you are cursed, then indeed, you are cursed. n the 1973 Yom Kippur war, with Israel in danger of being overrun, reserve soldiers arriving on the front lines were thrown into tanks and sent to ďŹ ght as quickly as possible. This meant that when a tank was hit no one was quite sure who all the crew members were, a detail that caused unimaginable pain to the families of many of the fallen soldiers after the war.

As a result, after the war, a decision was made that every vehicle on combat patrol had to ďŹ ll out a one-time pad with the names and serial numbers of each crew member in the vehicle. The pad was on carbon paper which automatically produced four copies â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one stayed with the vehicle commander, one went to the platoon commander, one to the radio/war room, and one to the battalion manpower ofďŹ cer (the shalish). The pad had to be ďŹ lled out and run back to the radio room right before you set out on patrol, which created a problem for me when I was a combat ofďŹ cer in Lebanon

many years ago, and for many religious commanders like me: what to do on Shabbat?

On the one hand, ďŹ lling out such a pad the day before the patrol defeated the purpose of the exercise. On the other hand, could one justify writing on Shabbat to avoid confusion in the event of combat? Generally speaking, performing otherwise prohibited activities (like writing, or driving in a jeep or tank) on Shabbat, is permitted to save lives (or when facing imminent danger), something that seemed hard to justify in the case of paperwork. So what to do?

The responsa I relied on in the ďŹ eld was from an incredible book I used to carry in my pocket in the army, Dinei Tzava Uâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Milchama (The Laws of the Army and War) by Rav Avraham Min Haâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Har. This book was speciďŹ cally written for IDF soldiers in the ďŹ eld by one of the eminent rabbinic poskim of the day.

Rav Min Hahar quotes the Shulchan Aruch regarding the case of a blind woman giving birth. A woman giving birth is considered a choleh sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;yesh boâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sakanah (a sick person in danger) and as such one is allowed to transgress Shabbat to help save such a sick personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life.

In such a case, the Shulchan Aruch rules that if the blind woman asks that a candle be lit in the room (to facilitate people helping her in childbirth, even though she herself cannot see it and thus will not beneďŹ t from it) we are obligated to do so, as the morale boost to the patient (who will know that those helping her can see better) is itself life-saving.

As such, Rav Min Haâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Har ruled that the morale boost a soldier receives from the knowledge that the army knows where he is, and will do everything to bring him home, is itself life-saving.

Therefore he ruled, we were not only allowed

And he added that we should take care to write clearly and not even attempt to use our non-writing hand (a way to minimize the Shabbat transgression)! orale is not a small thing, and this week in the portion of Balak we see that no less than G-d Himself takes pains to ensure that the morale of the Jewish people is high as they prepare to enter and conquer the land of Israel.

All of which brings to mind some of the challenges we face today as a Jewish people. Make no mistake about it: If Hashem decided we are worthy of creating a State of Israel and living in our ancient ancestral land as promised in the bible after 2,000 years of exile, then that is what will be. And no amount of boycotts, anti-Israel groups like Justice for Palestine, or UN reports equating Israel with terrorist entities like Hamas, will change that. But it is nonetheless important for us to know that our living in our land and creating a model society of an ethical people and an ethical army was always meant to be.

Three thousand years ago, the world saw what a difference this tiny people, alone amongst the nations, could make. Today, as we continue our efforts to live up to being such a light unto the nations, let us not forget how far we have come and how blessed we are to have merited to live in such incredible times. Three thousand years after a ragtag band of freed slaves prepared to conquer the land of Israel to create a home of their own, we are pressed to demonstrate that a Jewish army, in a modern State of Israel, speaking in Hebrew, an ancient tongue reborn as a modern language, is indeed the most ethical army in the entire world. Not a bad problem to struggle with.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri and members of his cabinet on Monday attended a ceremony marking the 22nd anniversary of the AMIA Jewish center bombing in Buenos Aires. Eighty-five people were killed and hundreds were wounded in that bombing on July 18, 1994.

Authorities widely believe that Iran is responsible for what is seen as the worst bombing in the country’s history. The ceremony for the 22nd anniversary of the bombing

featured the motto “memory unites us” and included the public reading of the names of each of the 85 victims.

“The terrorists who planted the bomb … simply wanted to destroy the symbol for solidarity that is the AMIA and thus hurt us all as Argentineans,” said AMIA Vice President Ralph Thomas Saieg, according to the World Jewish Congress. Saieg called on Argentina’s justice minister, Germán Garavano, to continue to investigate the bombing.

Pogroms? Not in Poland!

Polish Education Minister Anna Zalewska came under fire last week for remarks appearing to deny Polish responsibility for two massacres of Jews.

Zalewska had addressed the Jedwabne massacre of 1941, during which Poles burned alive more than 300 Jews inside a barn, and the Kielce massacre in 1946, in which 42 people were shot by Polish police because of a false blood libel accusation.

For many years, Poles tended to avoid discussing these pogroms, and when they did address them, they denied that Polish anti-Semitism had been a motive and instead blamed the Germans

for the massacres. But the book “Neighbors,” published in 2000 by Polish-American sociologist Jan Tomasz Gross, began to change Polish perspectives on the issue, creating greater soulsearching in Polish society and leading to official state apologies for the pogroms.

When Zalewska was asked about the two pogroms by a journalist on television, she said that “Jedwabne is a historical fact that has led to many misunderstandings and very biased opinions.”

When the journalist retorted that “Poles burned Jews in a barn,” Zalewska responded, “That’s your opinion.”

Our Sages teach us: â&#x20AC;&#x153;There never arose in Israel a prophet like Moshe, but among the nations of the world there did arise; and who is that? Bilam son of Beorâ&#x20AC;? (Midrash Tanaim, Devarim: 34). Bilamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story, therefore, emerges as one of the greatest examples in history of purposely-squandered potential: Instead of using his prodigious prophetic talents to serve G-d and mankind, Bilam directed his efforts toward the eradication of our people and destruction of all that was good and holy. In short, in his prophecy-for-proďŹ t campaign, nothing was more valuable than self-aggrandizement.

We have been truly blessed with prophets of truth. May Hashem continue His beneďŹ cence by bringing Mashiach Tzidkanu (our Righteous Messiah) to lead our nation and rebuild the Beit HaMikdash, so that His Divine Presence will be manifest amongst us once again. I

n Bible study, teachings of morality often take a back seat to the teachings of law, custom and history. The book being brought to your attention this week explores morality in the context of our religious traditions.

Rabbi Marc Angel has written a unique work that singles out the teachings of King Solomon as found in Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), Mishlei (Proverbs), and Shir Hashirim (the Song of Songs), and places them atop a theological pedestal; these teachings are not prayers, historical narratives nor guides to ritual law.

This work answers the following questions: • What is life’s meaning and mission?

• How can we help foster a viable society based upon truth, and morality?

• How do we achieve a true soul-searching and productive relationship with G-d?

Rabbi Angel’s book, “ The Wisdom of Solomon and Us: The Quest for Meaning, Morality and a Deeper Relationship with God” (Jewish Lights Publishing, 2016) deals with each morality-based issue in a user-friendly style absent a pomposity of theological verbiage.

Its subtitle says it all and faithfully follows up upon each theme with practical teachings.

Rabbi Angel has selected verses from each of these three biblical works that are reflective of the great wisdom of Solomon. Each is explained and taught in the form of short written essays which effectively apply Solomon’s ancient teachings to our modern life’s experiences.

The section on Kohelet deals with basic issues that confront all of us. What is life’s meaning and mission? What is our significance in the vastness of space and the eternity of time?

The section on Mishlei relates to wisdom and ethics: How can we help maintain a

healthy society that is imbued with truth, compassion and moral courage?

And, finally, the section on Shir Hashirim considers how we can seek a genuine, soulsatisfying relationship with the Almighty.

Rabbi Angel effectively draws on a wide array of sources from classic Jewish texts as well as from world literature, psychology, history, philosophy, business and more. He demonstrates how the ancient wisdom in the teachings of Solomon is relevant and meaningful today.

The author’s stated goal in the book’s epilogue tells us the following: “In a sense, the biblical books ascribed to King Solomon can serve as remote control buttons. When we click onto these books, we can gain clarity about ourselves, about our soci-

ety, about our relationship with G-d. We can come closer to finding the ‘story that has to do with me, my story, the only story that can explain to me who I am, where I come from, and where I’m going’.”

The work is accompanied with an extensive footnoting and suggestions for further reading that you will surely find most useful in your continued studies of these teachings by Rabbi Angel.

Living in peace among very diverse neighbors RABBI AVI BILLET PARSHA OF THE WEEK A larger view of the Torah provides the context through which we can see how the Biblical Israelites were meant to relate to their neighbors in the lands within and surrounding the Promised Land. (Bereishit 15:7) Egypt was the land in which Abraham’s descendants were to be “strangers in a strange land” (Bereishit 15:13). It was also the land to which kings were forbidden to return the nation (Devarim 17:16). The lands east of the Jordan River (now Saudi Arabia and Jordan) were occupied by Edom/Seir, Midian, Moav, Emori, and Bashan, each of which was given the opportunity to allow the Israelites to pass freely through to the Jordan River, where the intended crossing into the Land would take place. (For reference: Edom – Bamidbar 20:14-19, refused in verse 21; Emori – Bamidbar 21:21-22, attacked in verse 23; Bashan –attacked the Israelites with waiting for the request, in Bamidbar 21:33.)

We are told in Devarim 2:8-9 that the people of Edom and Moav were untouchables, owing to Edom being descendants of Eisav and Moav being descendants of Lot. It was only the defeat of Moav at the hands of Sichon

(Bamidbar 21:26), with their land no longer belonging to Moav, that allowed the Israelites to conquer that land.

Even the Gaza area, owned by the Phillistines since the time of Avimelech King of Gerar, was untouchable to the Israelites on account of the peace treaty that had been made in the time of Abraham (Bereshit 21:22-34).

Similarly, lands further east were also not in the realm of Israelite conquest on account of the treaty made between Lavan and Yaakov (Bereshit 31:51-54), and the line they made that each was not to cross. s for the seven nations living in the Land, G-d declared that they were unworthy of maintaining their presence there on account of their idolatrous practices and immorality (see Devarim 7:1-2, Devarim 20:16-18, Yehoshua 3:10, et al.). Despite what the biblical text says, they were given the option to leave, as the Girgashi did, or to accept Israel’s authority (see last Tosafot on Sotah 35b), and had they done so, there would have been peace in the land since time immemorial. Even cities further away from these areas were to be given the option of accepting Israel’s authority, and had they done so they would have been spared of the sword (Devarim 20:10-11).

We can also note that had Israel been deserving of staying in the land in ancient times, they never would have been exiled. It is easy to argue that Israel’s existence today as a Jew-

ish State, with all its problems, is at least some indication that G-d approves of the Jewish return to the Land.

All of this points to the idea that, while ancient Israel was certainly given one-time instructions to wipe out certain nations, a peaceful offer was always to be put on the table first. In many cases, such as with Emori, Bashan, Moav, Midian, Jericho, Ai, as well as all the nations of Canaan (see Yehoshua 9:12), they chose to attack Israel. When a nation attacks, they become subject to a counteroffensive, which in ancient times often translated to complete annihilation. Think about the aims and goals of the nation of Amalek, and what became the mantra towards Amalek which we still recall to this day (Shmot 17:14, Devarim 25:19), and was actually acted upon by King Saul (Samuel I 15) and David (Samuel I 30).

Of course, mainstream Jewry today does not subscribe to ancient rules of genocide; any such Biblical mandates were for a specific time, a single time, with no bearing beyond that time period. We may all find it troubling just as, hopefully, contemporary Christians and Muslims do not subscribe to the horrific deeds perpetrated by their co-religionists over the last 2,000 years. In an age of modernity, the civilized world has embraced coexistence and rejected the “accept my way or die” offer of bygone times.

In our parsha, we see that Moav (of the

Lot family) and Midian (as easily represented

by Moshe’s father-in-law Yitro) chose to attack the Israelites before even hearing an offer. Their efforts to destroy Israel from within forced Israel to take revenge against Midian (see Bamidbar 31). he Middle East is a very large swath of land, which has room for many groups.

Were each group to look at itself and say, “Let us make the best living conditions for ourselves. Let us grow our economy. Let us provide for ourselves. Let us make something of ourselves,” while at the same time realizing that war and fighting is beneficial to no one, it would be incredible to see what could come from putting down weapons.

In Solomon’s days, peace reigned in the Land. If Israel is not attacked, if Israel is simply respected and allowed to live in peace, there would be no fighting, because Israel – from ancient Biblical times – has only wanted to live in the Promised Land in fulfillment of G-d’s vow to Abraham of “To your children I have given this Land.”

Whenever they were not attacked, they had no reason to fight on the offensive or to defend themselves.

And that is what the modern State of Israel would like to see today: Neighbors who are happy to live as neighbors, who have no desire to destroy Israel’s rights to her Ancestral Land.

Prophets of Israel and prophets of the Nations RABBI DAVID ETENGOFF

A

ccording to the first passage on our parasha, Hashem gave all the nations of the world the same opportunities and potential for leadership. This is based upon the notion that G-d’s actions are perfect and His path is just. As such, Hashem provided for the possibility of perfect balance and equality in the world: “The deeds of the [Mighty] Rock are perfect, for all His ways are just; a faithful G-d, without injustice He is righteous and upright.” (Sefer Devarim 32:4) [This may be interpreted as meaning] Hashem did not leave an opening in the World to Come (l’atid lavo) for the idol worshipping nations of the world to bring

charges that He had denied them parity with the Jewish people. What did the Holy One blessed be He do to ensure this equality? Just as he provided the Jewish people with kings, wise men and prophets, so, too, did He do so for the idol worshipping nations of the world. (Midrash Rabbah 20:1. This and all translations, brackets and underlining my own; all Torah translation, The Judaica Press Complete Tanach) The Midrash continues and notes that just as Hashem gave King Solomon to the Jewish people, he gave Nebuchadnezzar to the nations of the world; the former created the first Beit HaMikdash and the latter destroyed it. Moreover, G-d gave the wise King David great wealth which he used to purchase a House for Him, whereas, when Haman was given a similar fortune, he used it in an attempt to exterminate our nation. Most germane to our parasha, the Creator of the Universe gave Moshe to klal Yisrael and Bilam to the idol worshipping nations of the

world. Therefore, the Midrash teaches us, “All of the greatness bestowed upon the Jewish people was given in kind to the nations of the world.”

At this juncture, the Midrash compares and contrasts the Jewish prophets to their non-Jewish counterparts with regards to their actions and behaviors: See the differences between the prophets of the Jewish people and the prophets of the idol worshippers: The prophets of Israel warned the Jewish people to refrain from engaging in Torah prohibitions. As it is stated, “Now you, son of man, I have made you a lookout for the house of Israel, and you will hear a word from My mouth, and you shall warn them from Me.” (Sefer Yechezkel 33:7) Yet, the [ultimate] prophet who arose from the non-Jews incited promiscuous behaviors [amongst the Jewish people] so that [Gd’s] creations would be destroyed from the world. Moreover, all of the [Jewish] prophets acted with the quality of mercy

regarding both the Jewish and the idolworshipping nations. As a result, Yermiyahu said, “Therefore, my heart shall stir for Moab like flutes, and my heart shall stir for the men of Kir-heres like flutes; because they dealt haughtily.” (Sefer Yermiyahu 48:36) And so, too, did Yechezkel say: “Now you, son of man, lift up a lament about Tyre.” (Sefer Yechezkel 27:2) [Yet,] this hard-hearted individual [Bilam] arose and attempted to destroy an entire nation without cause and without reason. he final chapter of our parasha depicts the licentious acts committed by many of the men of the Generation of the Desert with the daughters of Moab. By Alex Traiman In less than a week, deadly shooting sprees at the hands of gunmen afďŹ liated with Islamic terror movements rocked Orlando and Tel Aviv. In America, the deadliest mass-murder attack since Sept.

11, 2001, has strengthened calls for stricter gun control laws. Yet in Israel, where many civilians carry ďŹ rearms, questions on how the terrorists acquired their weapons did not spark national debate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israelis relate to guns totally differently than Americans,â&#x20AC;? said Marc Provisor, director of security projects for One Israel Fund, an organization that provides security equipment to Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley. Most of terrorists who have attacked Israelis in recent months have been neutralized by armed raelis, including police ofďŹ cers, off-duty Issoldiers, and even civilians.

It would have been more remarkable, perhaps, if the Republicans had chosen to ignore their own declared conditions and continued supporting a Palestinian state.

The Democratsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; platform, too, has shifted many times over the years. It went from calling for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;internationalization of Jerusalemâ&#x20AC;? in 1948, to supporting â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jerusalem as the capital of Israelâ&#x20AC;? and urging that â&#x20AC;&#x153;the U.S. Embassy should be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,â&#x20AC;? in 1972 (long before the GOP took a similar stand). In their 1968 platform, the Democrats called for â&#x20AC;&#x153;the establishment of a non-provocative military balanceâ&#x20AC;? between Israel and the Arabs; four years later, talk of â&#x20AC;&#x153;balanceâ&#x20AC;? was dropped and the platform called for â&#x20AC;&#x153;provid[ing] Israel with aircraft and other military equipment in the quantity and sophistication she needs to preserve her deterrent strength.â&#x20AC;?

From 1956 through 1964, the Democratsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; platform called for â&#x20AC;&#x153;the resettlement of Arab refugees in lands where there is room and opportunity for them.â&#x20AC;? Then that language was dropped.

Party platforms are not set in stone.

They change to suit the policies of the nominee or the incumbent president, or to reďŹ&#x201A;ect shifts in opinion among the partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s membership. The Republican Party opposed Palestinian statehood for 16 years, and then, in response to the Oslo Accords, reversed itself. Now, after supporting Palestinian statehood for 12 years, the GOP has, in response to Palestinian terror and incitement, reversed itself again. Whether or not one agrees with the Republicansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; position, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing radical about it; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s their assessment of the facts on the ground in the Middle East.

Elliot Bartky, president of the Jewish American Affairs Committee of Indiana, who worked closely with the Indiana Assembly and Pence in crafting the anti-BDS legislation, said he feels the governor is an excellent choice by Trump. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Governor Pence has had a long and distinguished track record advocating for Israel and the Jewish people as a congressman and then governor of Indiana,â&#x20AC;? Bartky told JNS. org. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We fully expect that if elected vice president, Governor Pence will continue to lead the nation with the type of sorely needed moral clarity and courage on this issue that has typiďŹ ed his career to this point.â&#x20AC;?

Although he has taken on a strongly pro-Israel tone in recent months, Trump had previously raised concern in pro-Israel circles by saying he would take a â&#x20AC;&#x153;neutralâ&#x20AC;? approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conďŹ&#x201A;ict.

Pence, an evangelical Christian, has noted that his strong support for Israel is rooted in his faith. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Let me say emphatically, like the overwhelming majority of my constituents, my Christian faith compels me to cherish the state of Israel,â&#x20AC;? Pence said in an address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in 2009, while he was serving in Congress.

Many analysts believe Pence can boost Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s standing among social conservatives and strengthen his campaign in other areas such as executive experience, foreign policy, and navigating the political scene of Washington.

Pence served in the House of Representatives from 2001â&#x20AC;&#x201C;13, including on the inďŹ&#x201A;uential House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he advocated for robust military defense aid for Israel. As governor of Indiana, Pence has continued his steady record of support for Israel.
