The National Jewish Democratic Council argued that Johnson’s apology fell short, tweeting at the lawmaker, “@ RepHankJohnson, To refer to Jews as ‘termites’ is deeply offensive and dehumanizing. Not just a ‘poor choice of words.’ It’s dangerous.�

Johnson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that rather than directly describ-

ing Israeli settlers as termites, his initial comments had referred to “corrosive settlement policies� that “undermine the ability of all citizens in the region to enjoy healthy, peaceful lives in safe communities.�

In his speech at the Philadelphia event, Johnson said that Jews are appropriating land that belonged to Palestinian “ancestors.â€? He also compared Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. “The fact is the Israeli government, which is the most right-wing government ever to exist in the state of Israel in its history ‌ you got a guy like Trump who is now the minister of defense in Israel calling the shots on defense,â€? History Channel: Yes, Einstein was a Zionist

By Myron Kaplan, JNS.org The History Channel has reafďŹ rmed its commitment to accuracy by revising its “Albert Einstein: Fact or Fiction?â€? webpage to report that Einstein was, in fact, supportive of Zionism.

On July 11, it replaced erroneous wording that tended to negatively portray Israel: “Though he was very sympathetic to Israel, he was never an ardent Zionist — he believed in ‘friendly and fruitful’ cooperation between Jews and Arabs.�

There were two problems here: the erroneous characterization of Einstein’s attitude toward Zionism, and the erroneous implication that Zionism and Israel from the outset did not believe in cooperation between Arabs and Jews.

The History Channel’s revised wording reads, “Einstein was, however, very sympathetic to Israel. In 1947 he expressed his belief in Zionism as well as the importance of ‘friendly and fruitful’ cooperation between Jews and Arabs.� The case for revision was made by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) in correspondence with Kimberly Gilmore, the network’s historian and director of corporate outreach.

The revised paragraph reads: “Did Einstein really almost become the president of Israel? Yes. In 1952, Israel’s ďŹ rst president, Chaim Weizmann, asked his friend Albert Einstein (‘the greatest Jew alive,’ Weizmann said) if he would be willing to lead the young nation. Though the Israelis assured him that ‘complete facility and freedom to pursue your great scientiďŹ c work would be afforded by a government and people who are fully conscious of the supreme signiďŹ cance of

your labors,’ Einstein turned down the offer. “Einstein was, however, very sympathetic to Israel. In 1947 he expressed his belief in Zionism as well as the importance of ‘friendly and fruitful’ cooperation between Jews and Arabs. Despite his dedication to political issues, Einstein worried that he lacked the interpersonal skills to be a world leader. Still, Einstein added, ‘my relationship to the Jewish people has become my strongest human

bond, ever since I became fully aware of our precarious situation among the nations of the world,’ and he was ‘deeply moved’ by Weizmann’s offer.�

CAMERA cited authoritative sources in making its case to the History Channel.

Contrary to the assertion that Einstein was “never an ardent Zionist,�

Einstein expressed great admiration of and identiďŹ cation with Zionism.

In a letter to India Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on June 13, 1947, Einstein wrote, “Long before the emergence of Hitler I made the cause of Zionism mine because through it I saw a means of correcting a agrant wrong. ‌ The Jewish people alone has for centuries been in the anomalous position of being victimized and hounded as a people, though bereft of all the rights and protections which even the smallest people normally has. ‌ Zionism offered the means of ending this discrimination. “Through the return to the land to which they were bound by close historic ties. ‌ Jews sought to abolish their pariah status among peoples. ‌ The advent of Hitler underscored with a savage logic all the disastrous implications contained in the abnormal situation in which Jews found themselves. Millions of Jews perished ... because there was no spot on the globe where they could ďŹ nd sanctuary. ‌ The Jewish survivors demand the right to dwell amid brothers, on the ancient soil of their fathers.â€?

The implication in the History Channel’s initial phrasing — that Zionism from the

beginning did not believe in cooperation between Jews and Arabs — also is contradicted by the words of David Ben-Gurion, certainly an ardent Zionist, who was a primary founder of the State of Israel and its ďŹ rst prime minister. “[I]n our state there will be non-Jews as well — and all of them will be equal citizens — equal in everything without any exception; that is: the state will be their state as well,â€?

Ben-Gurion said in a speech on Dec. 13, 1947. “The attitude of the Jewish State to its Arab citizens will be an important factor — though not the only one — in building good neighborly relations with the Arab states. “If the Arab citizen will feel at home in our state, and if his status will not be the least different from that of the Jew, and perhaps better than the status of the Arab in an Arab state, and if the state will help him in a truthful and dedicated way to reach the economic, social, and cultural level of the Jewish community, then Arab distrust will accordingly subside and a bridge to a Semitic, JewishArab alliance, will be built.�

So what can be learned from this example? For one thing, conventional wisdom tends to hold that the Israeli-Palestinian conict amounts to something like “cruel Israel victimizes the weak Palestinians,â€? a false understanding that too often inuences writers and speakers to oversimplify, distort, or even falsify historical information about the conict. Then, it’s often up to an outside watchdog like CAMERA to uphold traditional historical and journalistic standards of accuracy and set the record straight.

By Ed Weintrob Moshe Rieder a”h was eulogized as a mensch and a chaver tov with emunah pshutah who exuded hakoros hatov.

Rieder, 36, of West Hempstead, was nifter on erev Shabbat, July 15 (9 Tammuz).

A former advertising sales representative for The Jewish Star, he had graduated from Queens College and earned an MS degree in childhood education from Adelphi University. A graduate of HANC High School and the Yeshiva of South Shore elementary school, he also studied for a year at Yeshivat Shaare Yerushalayim.

Rabbi Josh Goller, assistant rabbi at the Young Israel of West Hempstead, told a packed levaya in the Jewish Memorial Chapel on Greenwich Street in Hempstead on Sunday, July 17, that the term “darchei noam” applied to Moshe — “everything he did was pleasant and sweet.”

“Every time that anyone here thinks of saying a bad word about somebody else, they’ll remember that Moshe never uttered a bad word about another person,” said Rabbi Goller, who grew up around the corner from the Rieder family.

“Anytime that somebody wrongs us and we have every right to be upset and respond in kind, we’re going to remember that Moshe never got angry. Anytime we’re faced with a challenge and we believe that we can’t surmount it, we’ll remember that Moshe had a fire burning inside of him that never allowed him to give up.

“He exuded his positivity to everyone around him.”

His brother Binyamin said of Moshe, “You saw the good things in life in many ways that we do not, you strived to make everyone around you a better person by showing pure love for one another.” In that way, Rabbi Goller concluded, Moshe lived up to his name, which means “to draw out,” encouraging “all of us to be as much as we can.”

“Everyone he came in contact with was his friend,” said his sister, Malke.

Speaking on behalf of Rieder’s friends, many of whom expressed their shock and grief in social media posts, Shmuel Dovid Kelemer said Rieder “had a trememdous emunah pshutah” (simple faith) and hakoros hatov (the ability to see good).

“He saw only the beauty in people, never had a negative thing to say about anybody,” Kelemer said, adding that Rieder “offered a quality of friendship that could only come from someone with a pure golden neshama.

It’s hard to imagine that such a friend will come again in a lifetime.

“I have many acquaintances [and] a warm loving family, but a chaver tov, a good friend, I had one. Now I don’t have anyone like that.”

His uncle, Dr. Danny Rothenberg, said Rieder “was a star of unimagined dimensions … living with extraordinary humility and with persistence and hope.”

Rothenberg referred to Rieder’s age, 36 (lamed vav), “which also means lu — if only.

If only we had known how precious our time

was with him. If only we had learned from him in his lifetime what it means to be a friend.”

“When those two letters go together one can think of the lamed vav tzadikim,” Rieder’s brother Binyamin said. “We don’t know who they are, [but considering] his acts of kindness and selflessness — I’m not sure he had a bad bone in his body — I think today he was one of the lamid vavnicks.”

“Our world would be a better place if we had a fraction of his love for his fellow person,” Binyamin said.

“He used all 100 percent of the potential that hakadosh barechu gave him in this world to be the best, the nicest and the kindest person he could be,” said Rabbi Yehudah Pearl, rabbi emeritus of Congregation Anshei Shalom in West Hempstead.

“He was a true mensch,” said Moshe’s physician and friend, Dr. Harold Lipsky, president of the Young Israel of West Hempstead.

On Facebook, friends wrote that they were “stunned and devastated” by news of the passing of “a loyal friend,” “a great guy and a righteous man.”

“He was a pure and gentle soul,” wrote a longtime friend. “I wish I had taken the time to articulate more often how much I appreciated the effort he put into maintaining our friendship over the years. I always thought I’d have more time with him to tell him.”

“If you looked up the word ‘mensch’ in the dictionary, you would find Mo’s picture,” wrote another.

“I will never get another phone call from you asking how my day’s [been] and how my kids are doing, such simple things in life,” he said. Now, “it will have to be me doing the calling to you. I hope you take the call and listen.”

gain this year, there is evidence of a polarization in Israeli society. Jewish men purporting to represent what Judaism is meant to be, describing themselves as “religious” or “ultra-Orthodox,” spitting or throwing chairs and hurling derogatory slurs (the latter often being worse, in the eyes of Jewish tradition) at other Jews; the former chief rabbi of the State of Israel remains entangled in an Israeli police investigation into financial improprieties; Orthodox rabbis are arguing with each other over who is more Orthodox. … Does it get any worse?

As we begin the three weeks of mourning which commemorate the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash 2,000 year ago— according to the Talmud, due to sinat chinam (baseless hatred), it behooves us to consider how and why we find ourselves in this unfortunate state of affairs.

What do you do when someone you love does something you hate?

This week’s portion, Pinchas, may offer us some sage advice. inchas, grandson of Aaron the high priest, lays claim to fame at the end of last week’s portion, Balak: No less than a Jewish prince, a tribal Nasi (Zimri ben Saluh of the tribe of Shimon), one of the great leaders of the Jewish people, is actually cohabitating with a Midianite (idolatrous) princess in public, literally opposite the Mishkan (the tabernacle) and no-one is doing anything about it! Even Moshe and Aaron are (seemingly) so overwhelmed by the audacity of this public desecration that they are simply weeping in front

ecration (which put an end to the plague ravishing the Jewish people) the Torah says, “Vayakam mitoch ah’Eidah” (“He arose from the midst of the congregation”) (Numbers 25:7). Pinchas was firmly ensconced in the midst of the congregation; he was with the Jewish people, he felt their pain, reveled in their joy, suffered with their sorrow, and knew their challenges. He was a true descendant of Aaron.

The Torah tells us that Aaron was able to “cause friends to re-unite and husbands and wives to make peace,” something only possible in the context of a deep relationship with his fellow Jews. And, the verse uses the same word (eidah, the congregation) later used in the story of Pinchas for Jewish congregation. Pinchas learned his love of his fellow Jews, and his ability to lead them and yet be amongst them at the same time, from his grandfather Aaron.

This trait was different, for example, from the way Moshe was viewed.

In fact, when Moshe was up on Mount Sinai (while the Jewish people were committing their greatest mistake: the sin of the Golden Calf) G-d says: “Lech reid ki shicheit Amcha” (“Get down [off the mountain] because your people have become destructive”) (Exodus 32:7).

True leadership is knowing how to be amongst the people while still being able to lead them.

And that was the greatness of Pinchas. erhaps this is what is missing today. With 60,000 Yeshiva students ensconced in the study halls of the great yeshivot, Torah scholarship abounds. But this Torah scholarship is up on a mountain; completely divorced from most of the Jewish people.

I recall after a particular grueling day of maneuvers back when I was in IDF basic training, finally being allowed to collapse onto our beds in our tent. Given only around four hours to sleep, I vividly remember seeing Eli, a hesdernick (combining Torah study in yeshiva with a couple of years of military service), staying awake studying a page of Talmud with a flashlight while desperately trying to keep his eyes open, so as not to finish his day without some Torah study. It was a simple, almost overlooked moment, but it made a lasting impression on me.

True leadership does not remain in the study hall, it arises from amidst the Jewish people.

At the same time it behooves us to be sure we love even those with whom we may strongly disagree. Even as he picked up the spear, Pinchas was a descendant of Aaron, and he loved the same prince of Shimon every bit as much as he loved the Jewish people. It was only Shimon’s actions he was determined to stop. And every Jew, whatever his or her clothing and perspective is a part of us, and we need to feel that love for him or her even while we may disagree with what it is they are saying or doing.

If blind hatred lost us the Temple 2,000 years ago, it is purposeful (tough?) love which will help us rebuild it.

So Pinchas stands up and puts an end to this public desecration by publicly executing both Zimri, the tribal prince, along with Kozbi, the Midianite princess. And no less than G-d himself (at the beginning of this week’s portion) declares the motives of Pinchas to be pure, his cause just, and guarantees him a “covenant of peace.”

Putting aside the many challenges inherent in such a story (and the fact that only G-d can declare such an action, with no judge or jury, to be acceptable), it is fascinating to note that the consequence of such a violent act is the granting of a covenant of peace. Even more interesting is that the Torah takes the time to delineate that Pinchas is the direct descendant of Aaron the high priest whom we know was given this exalted role because he was the perennial “ohev shalom” (a lover and a pursuer of peace).

How can Pinchas, depicted as the ultimate zealot, be a descendant of Aaron who loved peace?

Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz, zatza”l, the great Rosh yeshiva of the Mir, points out (in his sichos mussar) that before meting out punishment, one must be filled with a sense of love and compassion for the one being punished.

Precisely because Pinchas was the descendant of Aaron, and was imbued with the quality of loving his fellow human being, he was able to mete out the appropriate consequence without being affected by personal considerations.

n Arab member of Knesset’s public support of a terrorist who murdered an American-Jewish peace activist led to the Knesset last week to enact a law that could, under difficult circumstances, lead to the removal of an MK’s legislative immunity.

But if you read the account by New York Times correspondent Isabel Kershner, you wouldn’t know anything about the terrorist or his victim — all you would learn is that Israel’s rulers are suppressing dissent and might be infected by “budding fascism.”

It’s as if Kershner and her editors are living in an alternative universe, in which Israel is always guilty, Arab extremists are always innocent, and the 141 Americans who have been murdered by Palestinian terrorists simply didn’t exist.

The current controversy began in February, when Haneen Zoabi and two other Arab Knesset Members (all from the Balad Party) paid a solidarity visit to ten families of Palestinian terrorists who were involved in recent attacks. One was the father of Baha Alyan.

For those who don’t recognize Alyan’s name, let me refresh your memory.

In October 2015, Alyan and fellow-terrorist Bilal Ghanem armed themselves with guns and knives, and boarded a bus in Jerusalem. One of the passengers was 78-yearold Richard Lakin, a civil rights veteran from Connecticut. Lakin “taught English to Israeli and Palestinian children” in Jerusalem and “never missed a peace rally,” according to his rabbi. The cover photo on Lakin’s Facebook page featured a Jewish child and a Palestinian child under the heading “Coexist.” Of course, none of that matters to Palestinian terrorists. They kill left-wing Jews, they kill right-wing Jews. It’s all the same to them.

Nor were Alyan and Ghanem deterred by the fact that Lakin was obviously an elderly man. They stabbed him in the face and chest.

But that wasn’t enough. They also shot him in the head. ow does Haneen Zoabi feel about the murderer of an American-Jewish peace activist? She made her feelings very clear during her visit to the terrorists’ families. The purpose of the visit was to dramatize their demand that Israel surrender the bodies of the dead murderers. Alyan’s father, Muhammed, was the leader and spokesman for the families. According to the Palestinian news agency Ma’an, the meeting began with a moment of silence, evidently to honor the dead terrorists. That was followed by “a reading from the Koran,” by Muhammed Alyan.

Zoabi and her colleagues “emphasized their Palestinian identity,” Ma’an reported, and “said they will do all they can to pressure Israeli decision-makers so that the bodies will be buried. … The [Knesset members] saluted the families’ strong stance and their endless struggle against [Israeli] aggression.”

Afterwards, Zoabi’s Balad Party posted a description of the meeting on its official website. The report referred to Alyan and the other dead terrorists as “shahids,” or martyrs, the highest term of Islamic religious honor. Balad also posted a video message by Alyan’s father, according to Palestinian Media Watch.

In his message, Alyan called the visit by Zoabi and company “warm and productive,” and praised them for “listening to the suffer-

It’s actually a very mild law. It permits the removal of immunity only if 90 out of the Knesset’s 120 members vote to do so. Even the New York Times grudgingly conceded that the rules “make the process difficult to carry out.” But that did not stop Kershner from asserting — in what was allegedly a news story — that the law “has added to the sense” (whose?) that Israel’s “conservative government” is “pushing questionable measures” (questioned by Kershner, that is) that some say are “indicative of ‘budding fascism’.”

There are so many troubling elements to this episode. There is the disturbing specter of an Arab Knesset member exploiting her parliamentary immunity to endorse terrorists. There is the grotesquely misleading coverage by the New York Times. And then there is the perplexing indifference of many American Jews. U.S. Jewish organizations — especially Richard Lakin’s old friends in J Street and Americans for Peace Now—should be speaking out loudly against those who praise Richard’s killer. Why are they silent?

After failed Turkey coup, fascism BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT

W

e live in an era of resurgent, strongman leaders. Some of them, like Russian President Vladimir Putin, carry an aura of invincibility, a sense that they effortlessly control the levers of power at every level of state activity, from parliament to intelligence operations to the military. Some of them cling to power even as the states they created crumble under the weight of corruption, mismanagement, political repression, and economic degradation; Venezuela’s leader, Nicolas Maduro, is a prime example of this. Still others cling to power through brute force and mass murder, propped up by outside allies. The most obvious case here is the Syrian tyrant Bashar al-Assad, who has lived another day thanks to his friends in Moscow and Tehran.

There’s another class of strongman leader, who accumulates more and more power by presenting himself as the innocent victim of murky outside conspiracies, spinning his unfortunate condition as an attack on the sovereign will of the people, and not just upon himself or his political party. Case in point? Enter Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

For a few hours on Friday, July 15, the world believed that Erdogan had been the target of a coup. Media attention that had been focused on the previous day’s terrorist atrocity in Nice, France, suddenly lurched towards Ankara and Istanbul, where tanks were in the

streets, fighter jets were flying overhead, and state media was announcing the existence of something called a “peace council” that would henceforth manage the country’s crisis. Erdogan himself was rumored to have left the country, and there were even reports that he had requested asylum in Germany.

But by Saturday, Erdogan and his cohorts were back in control. We will perhaps never know the true story of what happened during those fateful hours, but it is striking that this coup appears to have been so incompetently executed, all the more so in Turkey, which has had its fair share of violent transitions of power in the recent past.

Certainly, Erdogan has reaped great rewards in the aftermath, which has seen him move several steps closer to the Sultan-like status he craves. Does that he mean he staged the coup? I’ve always been highly skeptical of “false flag operation” theories, but if you’re hunting for one, you’re probably on more solid ground with the attempted coup in Turkey than you are with 9/11 in America or the assault on the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris.

Erdogan has named and blamed his most hated enemy, the Pennsylvania-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, for the coup in which around 200 people were killed. The figurehead of a movement that blends fealty to Islam with a commitment to scientific inquiry

Erdogan has established himself as a dictator and Turkey is dismantling what precious few civil liberties remain.

The Three Weeks TEHILLA R. GOLDBERG VIEW FROM CENTRAL PARK

T

his week we’ve begun The Three Weeks — or ben ha-metzarim (literally, “between the narrow places).”

On most Shabbatot, the Torah narrative that is read in synagogue is followed by a thematically compatible passage from the prophets. During the Three Weeks, the thematic connection between the week’s Torah reading and the Prophetic text is broken and we read Haftorahs that are termed by our rabbis as pur’anut, prophecies of admonition or destruction. Painfully, they speak of the destruction of the Temple and of Jerusalem herself.

Along with these three Haftorahs, ast Sunday’s fast of the 17th of Tammuz, form the entrance into this somber time on the Jewish calendar that culminates in Tisha b’Av, the commemoration of our national tragedy of the Temple in Jerusalem burning, of the exile of our people from our land — and since then, of all the national Jewish tragedies that have befallen our people.

There can be a real dissonance in all of this.

Here it is, summer time, the height of nature’s flowering and expansion. As nature peaks into its ultimate colorful beauty, we are contracting, meditating on sadness and destruction, minimizing the pleasure and ease of our lives, thinking of our destroyed Jerusalem. We are remembering past exile while nature blooms into her ultimate expression of beauty and warmth.

As birds chirp and hum, bringing this season’s auditory dimension of music, the Jewish soundtrack of the Three Weeks is the moving, haunting, melancholy tune of the exquisite and stirring book of Lamentations — “Eicha yashva badad ha’ir rabbati am” (how solitary she sits, the city once great with people). We internal-

and interfaith dialogue, Gulen was a close ally of Erdogan until 2013, following an enormous corruption scandal that was centered upon leading figures in the Turkish president’s ruling AKP Party, including Erdogan himself.

Rather like Leon Trotsky, the founder of the Soviet Red Army who was hounded and chased out of the USSR by Joseph Stalin, Gulen has become an allencompassing explanation for the existential threats, as Erdogan perceives them, that are currently plaguing Turkey. Stalin saw the influence of “Trotskyite counter-revolutionaries” everywhere, and brutally purged every element of the Soviet apparatus. Erdogan is now doing much the same with the “Gulenist terrorists.”

Since Trotsky himself was eventually assassinated in Mexico City in 1940, after more than a decade of wandering the globe, Gulen can be forgiven for wondering whether he will face a similar fate at his home in the Poconos — assuming, that is, that the Obama administration doesn’t accede to Erdogan’s demand that the cleric be extradited to his homeland. n Turkey itself, Erdogan has embarked up on a rapacious statewide purge. Around 60,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants, and teachers have been suspended or detained, or are under investigation by the regime. At Istanbul University alone, nearly 100 academics have been ousted from their positions and all academics are now banned from traveling abroad. Nearly 700 private schools have been summarily closed down. The crackdown on the media — long the subject of Erdogan’s hatred (Turkey is at number 151 in the global press freedom rankings, just below Tajikistan) — has been especially fearsome, with 24 broadcasters having their licenses revoked and dozens of internet portals blocked.

Erdogan can, at this time, claim the support of around half of Turkey’s population.

The other half detests him. There were many anti-regime Turks who laughed bitterly when they saw Erdogan, as the coup was underway, imploring his people to get into the streets and demonstrate. They remembered, of course, the defeated uprising against Erdogan in 2013, when more than 8,000 were injured in clashes with the authorities and thousands more were arrested.

Internally, Erdogan is far stronger now than in 2013, when more than 3 million Turks openly defied him. In terms of Turkey’s regional status, that is a slightly different matter. The regime has been humbled in its dealings with both Russia, with whom Erdogan has been at loggerheads over the war in Syria, and Israel, which endured his vulgar anti-Semitic rhetoric for more than a decade before reaching a reconciliation deal with Turkey in June. One might even marvel at the fact that Erdogan has purged more than 600 leading military officers at a time when you’d think he needs them — but remember that Stalin did exactly the same.

Erdogan has established himself as a dictator and Turkey — a NATO member and still a candidate for membership of the European Union — is dismantling what precious few civil liberties remain.

There was a time when Turkey’s apologists, particularly in the American-Jewish community, sycophantically described the country as “the only democracy in the Middle East besides Israel.” Only the most foolish of them would do so now. This is what fascism looks like.

Yet, once the pain peaks on Tisha b’Av, for seven weeks following, textual recovery arrives. Seven Haftorahs, known as “sheva de-nechemta,” seven readings of comfort, replace the sad texts.

While the harsh narratives are three, the comforting ones are more than double that.

Three to Seven.

Even when pain is inevitable, even when it is real and cannot be sugarcoated away, there is comfort. And not just comfort, but the hope of a multiplying of comfort.

Pain, or even the memory of pain, may sometimes be unavoidable — be it our earthly Jerusalem, Yerushalayim shel mata, or our personal broken Jerusalems. We must retain our historic and personal integrity by honoring those darker times.

The Jewish calendar is not just filled with celebrations of sunshine. All of it is there, the full gamut of emotions. We acknowledge and remember both the good and the bad.

Yet, even the instances of pain — the narrowness of The Three Weeks — are followed by the softer balm of national comfort. When Prophet Isaiah comforts the Jewish people in their hour of pain, he doubles the consolation: “Nachamu nachamu ami,” take comfort, take comfort, My people.

Nachamu — twice. Comfort, doubled.

Jewishly, in a nutshell, this is one of the messages of summertime. I like to think that the reservoir of compassion, of comfort and of empathy surpasses that of judgment, pain and harshness; we see that in the comparative number of Haftorahs: three to seven.

When we aspire to G-dliness in those narrowest of places, let us aspire to double our empathy, double our compassion, double our comforting.

May it be a safe Three Week passage for all.

I

love baking and decorating with chocolate.

Many years ago before I started catering, I began a chocolate business, not quite knowing much about chocolate but learning along the way. After ordering pretzels coated in chocolate, I decided I could easily make them and mastered that task.

I loved the idea of pouring tempered chocolate into plastic molds and was able to make just about anything out of chocolate.

Each year on Purim, I had a different theme. One year it was a breakfast made of sunny side up eggs, toast with melted butter and coffee, all served on what looked like China â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but it was all made of chocolate. The following year it was an all-chocolate chicken dinner, complete with French fries, vegetables and rolls. The year after, a 100 percent chocolate banana split with three scoops of ice cream, bananas, whipped cream, syrup, and sprinkles â&#x20AC;&#x201D; again all made of chocolate.

You would think we were really popular back then because I made 100 shalach manot packages each year and still didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have enough for everyone who came to the door as the kids got word that everything was made of chocolate. Somewhere in my basement there are about 500 chocolate malts in any possible shape you can think of.

One of my favorite things to make with chocolate is ganache. It comes from the French

word for jowl.

Ganache is normally made by heating cream, then pouring it over chopped chocolate of any kind. The mixture is stirred or blended until smooth, sometimes with extracts or liquids added.

Depending on the kind of chocolate used, for what purpose the ganache is intended and the temperature at which it will be served, the ratio of chocolate to cream is varied to obtain the desired consistency. Typically, two parts chocolate to one part cream are used for ďŹ lling cakes or as a base for making chocolate trufďŹ&#x201A;es, while one to one is commonly used as a glaze. Cooled ganache can be whipped to increase volume and spread to cover a cake.

There are many uses for ganache, such as in enveloping individual desserts in the hot rich velvety smooth glaze, or letting it cool a bit and spreading it on the cake. Another favorite of mine is baked ganache. Once baked, the ganache is light and airy, yet still rich and melts in your mouth. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a favorite recipe of mine. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sure to be a crowd pleaser â&#x20AC;Ś if your crowd loves chocolate!

Ingredients: 8 cups heavy cream 20 ounces semisweet chocolate 4 large eggs 1-3/4 teaspoons pure vanilla extra extract Glaze Ingredients: 4tablespoon heavy cream 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate 2 teaspoons light corn syrup 1-3/4 tablespoons warm water Preheat oven to 350, and line a 9x 13 inch

baking pan with parchment paper, so that the bottom and sides are covered, including the sides higher than them by half an inch. Spray with Pam. On stovetop, bring heavy cream to slight boil. Remove from heat.

Place 20 ounces of semisweet chocolate into a metal bowl. Pour the cream over the chocolate and let it sit for a few minutes. Then stir the mixture till the chocolate and cream and totally incorporated and smooth.

Next, in a separate bowl, whisk eggs and vanilla. Add the egg mixture to the chocolate mixture. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t over mix.

Pour into pan and bake for 30-40 minutes, until the sides are baked and the middle jiggles a little. It will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven. The sides will start to fall as it cools and the center will solidify. Cool completely.

Once itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s totally cool, take 5 tablespoons of heavy cream and microwave it for about 50 seconds. Pour over chopped chocolate, and stir until itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all melted, and smooth. Add water and light corn syrup, and pour over baked genache. Make sure to coat entire top evenly, with the glaze. Refrigerate at least a half hour.

For those of you less inclined to get creative, you can just lift the parchment paper out of the pan and cut into squares to serve.

I like to get a bit creative. For those of you, like meâ&#x20AC;Ś Cut the genache in any shape you wish.

This time I cut them in diamond shapes and put them on a wire rack.

Next, heat some tempered chocolate (you can purchase the Shufra bars in Gourmet Glatt) in the microwave for 65 seconds and keep heating and stirring at 15 second intervals till

totally melted. Pour into a glass measuring cup and pour over the diamond cut baked genache till completely covered. At this point, you can decorate with chocolate shavings, crushed nuts, sprinkles, etc. Let harden completely and en slide a thin spatula underneath to remove.

Place them on lined baking tins with enough room In between, so that you can remove them without damaging them.

Cover the pans and refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze. To defrost, place in refrigerator for about 3-4 hours. This will cut down on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;sweating,â&#x20AC;? which occurs, when chocolate goes from freezer to room temperature.

By Jaime Geller My grandparents really knew how to cook. It seems to me that everyone born in â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Old Countryâ&#x20AC;? (in this case, Transylvania) was born with a built-in cooking intuition. Somehow they could create the most scrumptious meals using no fancy equipment, and not even measuring spoons. I recall that they hosted every holiday humbly, turning out the expected delicacies with what seemed like the simplest, most relaxed effort. No exotic ďŹ&#x201A;avor proďŹ les, nor any food combos and wine pairing, because when the food is that goodâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;no, make that superbâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no need to reinvent the wheel.

But since recipes evolve with each generation, I present some of my favorite traditional recipes with a few of my own twists.

My grandfather, Poppy, was nicknamed â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chefu,â&#x20AC;? Romanian for chef. A butcher by trade, he was amazing in the kitchen. He and my grandmother each had their specialties. Anytime we stopped by their house off Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Northeast Avenue, there was something tasty and fresh for us to eat.

I loved sitting at their tiny kitchen table enjoying sour cream potato soup. Poppyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original rendition of this soup consisted simply of potatoes, water, salt, pepper, sour cream, and small square luckshen. (It may sound like Chinese, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Yiddish for noodles.) Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve beefed up his recipe by replacing the water with vegetable broth and substituting small red-skin potatoes (eye appeal) for his peeled, diced russets. This rich soup immediately transports me back to his kitchen table with my legs dangling above the ďŹ&#x201A;oor.

Prep Time: 8 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Yield: 10 cups Ingredients: 3 tablespoons butter 1 large onion, ďŹ nely diced 1 quart vegetable broth, such as Manischewitz all-natural vegetable broth 1 pound very small red-skin potatoes, quartered One 16-ounce container sour cream

Kosher salt Ground white pepper 2 1/2 cups cooked small pasta (such as square noodles, ditalini, or orzo) Directions: 1. Heat the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring continually until translucent, about 10 minutes. Do not let the onion brown.

2. Add the broth and potatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.

3. Temper the sour cream by placing it in a large bowl and slowly, so that it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t curdle, whisking in 1 cup of the soup. Pour the tempered sour cream into the soup. Mix well and heat through. Season with salt and pepper. Place 1/4 cup noodles in each of 8 bowls and ladle the soup over the top. Serve warm.

Quick tips: Small square noodles by Manischewitz can be found in your local supermarket under the name Egg Noodles Flakes. This recipe keeps the cooked noodles separate from the soup so they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get mushy. Portion the noodles into bowls and top with hot soup just before serving.

You can vary the recipe by serving it as a chilled soup. Omit the noodles and puree with a dash of nutmeg until thick and creamy. Top with chopped chives.

For a fun twist, dress it up with Poppyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Potato Soup Cups. Make a spice rub to rim mugs for a fun presentation. Combine 2 tablespoons each paprika and celery salt in a small bowl. Dip the edges of 10 eight-ounce mugs in water and then in the spice rub. Fill the mugs with soup and garnish with a dollop of sour cream.

This soup is perfect with fresh buttered pumpernickel rolls.

Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 15-20 minutes Marinate Time: 24-48 hours Yield: 15 sausages Ingredients: 2 pounds ground beef (not too lean) 2 1/2 teaspoons ground caraway 1â &#x201E;4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 large garlic head 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups club soda or seltzer Canola oil Spicy mustard, for serving Directions: 1. Place the beef in a large bowl. Add the caraway, salt, and pepper. Crush the garlic cloves with a garlic press and add them to the bowl.

2. Combine the baking soda with 1 cup of the club soda or seltzer in a small bowl and whisk to dissolve. Add to the meat and mix well by hand to fully incorporate. Once fully absorbed, mix in an additional 1/2 cup club soda or seltzer. Once that is fully incorporated, add the remaining 1/2 cup. Continue to mix by hand for 5 minutes.

3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours or up to 48 hours.

4. When you are ready to cook, preheat the grill to high.

5. Oil your hands, scoop 1/3 cup of the meat mixture, and form it into an oblong sausage about 3 inches long by 1 inch wide. Place the sausage on a plate or baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining meat mixture to form 15 sausages total. Lower

the heat to medium and place the sausages on the grill. Grill for about 15 minutes, gently ďŹ&#x201A;ipping and turning them often so they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t burn and are evenly cooked through, until an instant-read thermometer registers the temperature at 160°F. (To cook on the stovetop, heat a grill pan over high heat, brush the Mititei with canola oil, lower the heat to medium, and cook as directed, or heat about 2 tablespoons canola oil until shimmering in a sautĂŠ pan or griddle over high heat, lower the heat to medium, and cook as directed.)

6. Serve with mustard.

Variations: My dad says, ideally, for â&#x20AC;&#x153;realâ&#x20AC;? Mititei, use ground neck meat with 200 grams (in English thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little less than half a pound) of beef fat added in. Since I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even begin to go there, I just buy 2 pounds of ground beef for the pride of Romanian cuisine.

Dress it up by serving the Mititei with Peach salsa: Combine 4 ripe peaches or nectarines, pitted and diced (about 1 1/2 cups); 1 small red onion, thinly sliced; 20 cherry tomatoes, halved; the juice of 1 lemon; 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil; 2 tablespoons torn fresh basil leaves or 2 teaspoons dried; 2 tablespoons torn fresh mint leaves (optional); 1 tablespoon honey; and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt in a medium bowl. Toss well and serve on top or on the side of the warm Mititei.

Prior to Operation Protective Edge in 2014, the Gaza Strip’s rulers allowed women to join the terrorist organization only as support staff, but after the conflict ended, Hamas also began recruiting women for active duty.

‘Start-up nation’ museum The foundation stone of a new museum dedicated to Israeli innovations was laid at an official ceremony last week at the Peres Center for Peace in Jaffa. President Rivlin, Prime Minister Netanyahu, and former President Peres attended.

The center, which will be completed in 2018 and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, will exhibit the history of Israel as the so-called “start-up nation” that’s become a leader in science and technology.

Exhibitions will showcase groundbreaking Israeli inventions that have changed the lives of millions worldwide. The center will also include a digital library.

“Innovation stops very quickly in societies that fail to combine lateral higher education and a climate that encourages business and free enterprise,” Netanyahu said.

Winthrop opened a newly renovated Trauma Center, the only one of its kind in Nassau County with adult and pediatric capabilities.

NYU Langone Medical Center, with its main campus on the east side of Manhattan, also operates more than 175 locations throughout the area, including on Long Island in East Rockaway, Garden City and Lake Success.

After being liberated from Bergen-Belsen, Glatt went to a hospital in Sweden for a short time and then came to the U.S. in 1945 where, as her son said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;she built a beautiful life for herself.â&#x20AC;?

She learned English, graduated from Brooklyn College and got a job as a bookkeeper. A decade after coming to the U.S., she married Joseph Glatt, who also survived the Holocaust. An accountant, he died in 2007 at 84.

Both Anna and Joseph Glatt were active in their community, Rabbi Glatt said. Anna was the president of the PTA at various schools in Brooklyn, and was most active at the Prospect Park Yeshiva, where she spearheaded the construction of a library in the 1960s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She was the most amazing person I know,â&#x20AC;? Rabbi Glatt said.

The levaya was held on July 13 at Shomrei Hadas Chapels in Boro Park and she was interred at Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdale.

In addition to her son, Rabbi Glatt, and his wife, Margie, Glatt is survived by another son, Avi Glatt and his wife, Lorraine, her daughter, Leora Fenster and her husband, Jay, and more than 40 direct biological descendants in addition to the many in-law children and grandchildren who she treated as her own.

Glatt, a Flatbush native and mother of Dr. Aaron Glatt, died on July 12. She was 92.

Dr. Glatt of Woodmere is assistant rabbi at the Young Israel of Woodmere and chairman of the department of medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.

Anna Glatt was the oldest of six children; she had three sisters and two brothers. Every member of her family, except her sister, Ettel Lieberman, was killed at Auschwitz. After being at Auschwitz for a little less than a year, Glatt and Lieberman were taken to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, according to Rabbi Glatt.

everal high-quality books have recently been published dealing with tefillah, a Jew’s conversation with G-d.

The first book, “From Within the Tent: The Shabbat Prayers” (Yeshiva University Press), features a series of 29 learned essays dealing with the most iconic Shabbat themed prayers.

It explores deeply the text of the Shabbat prayer book from a variety of approaches that include effective textual analysis, homiletic and academic exposition, as well as detailed and practical Jewish law analysis.

In an essay that deals with Tehillim, Chapter 19, which is recited by many during the Shabbat morning service, Rabbi Hayyim Angel presents the following teaching titled, “Combining Torah and Madda.”

“Dr. Norman Lamm discusses an apparent conflict within Rambam’s writings,” writes Rabbi Angel. “In his Mishneh Torah, Rambam writes that one attains love of G-d through contemplating nature. He writes similarly in his Moreh Nevuchim. In his Sefer Ha-Mitzvot, however, Rambam includes both mitzvah observance and contemplation of nature as means to attaining love of G-d.’’

Rabbi Angel asks why the Rambam is inconsistent and cites further the following teaching by Rabbi Lamm.

“Rabbi Lamm adopts an approach common in Rambam scholarship, and distinguishes between the masses and the intellectual elite.

The masses love G-d though observance of the mitzvoth, whereas the philosophical elite love G-d through nature.” I leave it to you, my dear reader, to follow through on this teaching and of how it relates further to the basic theme of Psalm19.

Rabbi Angel concludes: “Tehillim 19 teaches that the Torah and nature are different manifestations of G-d’s voice. They are different, and the psalm therefore separates them. But they are two means of hearing G-d’s voice that work together in harmony. The job of harmony is to perceive G-d’s glory in nature and the Torah, and speak of G-d’s praises. In this manner, all creation harmoniously unites in the service of G-d.”

As a side note, an interesting essay written four years ago by Dr. Jess Olson, “The Prayer For The Welfare of the Government,” makes for some timely reading. Consider, as a teaser, the following opening statement: “It was with some fanfare — and glaring media attention — that both the Republican and Democratic national party conventions in the 2012 presidential election year featured rabbis offering opening invocations.” There is much history to be found within the text of

this article, and much to be applied in our weekly prayers for the United States and Israel.

I would like to publically thank Elie Klein for having brought this valuable work to my personal attention. nother work related to Shabbat observance contains much dealing with Jewish liturgical practice within the much broader context of halachic ritual observance.

“The Concise Code of Jewish Law” (OU Press) by Rabbi Gersion Appel, zt”l, this represents a newly revised edition of a classic edited by Rabbi Daniel Goldstein, compiled from the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch with added contemporary halachic response.

Together with the previously cited work, this book provides a complete teaching experience for accurate and reliable Shabbat observance, in terms of ideology, hashkafah, and ritual observance both at home as well as in shul.

“The Concise Code” is an excellent text which follows an easy to use format for study, utilizing the basic halachic laws contained in the main text, supplemented with detailed annotations.

Among the leading poskim cited are Rabbis Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, Moshe Feinstein, Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Hayim David Halevy, all of blessed memory, and of con-

efore Parshat Pinchas buries itself in the sacrificial order for each holiday (what becomes the Maftir reading for those days), we hear the story of Tzlafchad’s daughters. Without rehashing old ideas that have been addressed in this space before, suffice it to say Tzlafchad’s personal story is unclear.

His daughters claim that “he was not part of the Korach group.” Of all things to say, isn’t that obvious? The worst offenders in the wilderness were from the tribes of Reuven (Datan and Aviram crowd) and Shimon (Zimri crowd), as well as the followers of

Korach, who may have been from different tribes (though this is not delineated) or from the greater family of Yitzhar, Korach’s father — in other words, frustrated Levites.

It is these episodes that provoked the Rabbis to proclaim, “Oy larasha oy lishcheino” (woe is to the wicked one and woe is to his neighbor). (Bamidbar Rabba 18:5) But Tzlafchad was from the tribe of Menashe, safely ensconced between Ephraim and Binyamin, somewhat away from the revolutionaries.

Moreover, at the beginning of the chapter preceding the Tzlafchad tale, we are given a rundown of the major families of every tribe and a summary of who was part of the Korach group (26:9-11) as well as an out-ofplace shout-out to Tzlafchad and his daughters when the family of Chefer, Tzlafchad’s father, is mentioned (26:32-34). There is no correlation and no connection, so why men-

tion it?

The Talmud (Baba Batra 118b) notes that the terminology utilized by Tzlafchad’s daughters actually refers to three groups — the “eidah” refers to the spies, “who protested against G-d” refers to the complainers of the Korach story, and “the Korach group is self-explanatory” (those who challenged Moshe). The Talmud notes that these groups all lost their merits to owning property in the land, which is why the daughters wanted to rule out any argument that their family was undeserving.

Which is fine — things work out relatively well for Tzlafchad’s daughters — despite their ending up having a limited pool of potential suitors. (See Bamidbar 36) Let’s go back to the depiction of those who were destroyed in the Korach story. “Datan and Aviram were the communal leaders who led a revolution against Moses and Aaron as

part of Korach’s rebellion against G-d. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korach when the [rebellious] group died and fire annihilated 250 men. This involved a divine miracle. The sons of Korach, however, did not die.” (26:9-11) hen reading that story in Chapter 16 it seems clear that there are two groups.

Datan and Aviram complaining about Moshe being an ineffective leader, and Korach and company complaining that Aharon should not be the High Priest because others are equally worthy. Besides, Amram’s family has enough power with Moshe at the helm of the people; why does Aharon also merit a leadership position?

he final pasuk of our parasha is somewhat difficult to understand: “Moses spoke to the children of Israel in accordance with all that the L-rd had commanded Moses.” (Sefer Bamidbar 30:1) We know from numerous verses that Moses told the Jewish people solely “that [which] the L-rd had commanded.” Without a doubt, he always acted as Hashem’s loyal servant.

Therefore, the Torah states that “he is faithful throughout My house.” (12:7) To what, then, does the phrase, “in accordance with all,” actually refer? Based upon Midrash Sifrei, Pinchas 57, Rashi suggests the following: Moses spoke to the children of Israel: [This verse is written] to make a pause;

[these are] the words of R. Ishmael.

Since up to this point the words of the Omnipresent [were stated], and the [following] chapter dealing with vows begins with the words of Moses, it was necessary to make a break first and say that Moses repeated this chapter [of offerings and the Festivals] to the Jewish people, for if not so, it would imply that he did not tell this to them, but began his address with the chapter discussing vows. (Underlining and emendations to the translation, from The Judaica Press Complete Tanach, are my own) In sum, Rashi is teaching us that Moses repeated to the Jewish people, both the laws pertaining to festival musafim (additional offerings) and the festivals themselves.

Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehudah Berlin (18161893), known to posterity as “the Netziv,” builds upon Rashi’s gloss and notes, “Our teacher, Moses, explained the laws of the Festivals to the Jewish people more so than

all the other parshiot in the Torah.” (Ha’amek Davar, Parashat Pinchas, 30:1) At first glance, this is a very surprising statement, as it seems there should be many other contenders for the crown of “most explicated section of the Torah.” As such, why did the Netziv single out the Festivals in this fashion? His answer is both incisive and far-reaching in scope: The [passages concerning the] musafim [and Festivals] are replete with amazing differences [in terminology], as each musaf utilizes a different linguistic formulation.

[This is highly substantive, for] without a doubt, these variations do not lack meaning. Instead, they represent the [hidden] secrets of the Torah, and provide a basis for the statutes and laws [that form the essential basis of] practical Halacha. Indeed, all of this may be derived from the very expression of “speaking” (“amirah”) [as we find in our verse, “va’yomer Moshe el b’nai Yisrael] …

Our pasuk, therefore, has but one purpose, to teach the inner meaning of the Mo’adim

to the Jewish people. This is the case, since they are a great and fundamental principle (haymah ikar gadol) regarding both ethical values and proper behavior. (Translations, brackets, bolding and underlining my own) The Netziv’s response raises yet another question, “How are the Mo’adim ‘a great and fundamental principle regarding both ethical values and proper behavior?’” The Rambam provides us with one of the most famous answers to this question in his presentation of the following halacha: When a person eats and drinks [in celebration of a holiday], he is obligated to feed converts, orphans, widows, and others who are destitute and poor. In contrast, a person who locks the gates of his courtyard and eats and drinks with his children and his wife, without feeding the poor and the embittered, is [not indulging in] rejoicing associated with a mitzvah, but rather the rejoicing of his Continued on page 16

While there is much to think about in that Korachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sons seem to be heaped together with Tzlafchad in terms of the fates that they did not share, I think the lesson learned from Korachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sons is that (at least in a free society) no one shapes your destiny but you.

And the same is true for Tzlafchad.

Whatever his â&#x20AC;&#x153;sin,â&#x20AC;? which may or may not have caused his death, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t of the magnitude that brought him out of deserving a portion of the land. As such, he should not be judged, and certainly his children should not be judged negatively on account of whatever it was.

In all likelihood, each of us has our own â&#x20AC;&#x153;little sinâ&#x20AC;? that prevents us from being as complete as we would like to be.

Maybe weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not careful about a certain mitzvah, or maybe we succumb to a certain â&#x20AC;&#x153;minorâ&#x20AC;? sin. Hopefully we can merit to pull ourselves out, like the sons of Korach, and hopefully in our efforts to do better we too will merit that our children (and we, if we repent!) should never suffer on account of our own misdeeds.

Their festival needs, he opines, are no less crucial than our own.

Indeed, for Maimonides, if we fail to provide the fundamental necessities to those less fortunate than us, our rejoicing is not â&#x20AC;&#x153;rejoicing associated with a mitzvah, but rather the rejoicing of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gut.â&#x20AC;? In short, if we ignore our basic responsibilities toward our fellow Jews, our would-be celebration of the festivals is transformed into a â&#x20AC;&#x153;disgrace.â&#x20AC;?

May we ever be solicitous of the needs of the entire Jewish people, so that all may stand before the Almighty with dignity and respect. So, too, may we be zocheh (merit) to celebrate the Festivals as â&#x20AC;&#x153;ish echad bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;lav echadâ&#x20AC;? (â&#x20AC;&#x153;as one individual dedicated to the same purposeâ&#x20AC;?) in the newly rebuilt Beit HaMikdash, soon and in our days.

By Alex Traiman In less than a week, deadly shooting sprees at the hands of gunmen afďŹ liated with Islamic terror movements rocked Orlando and Tel Aviv. In America, the deadliest mass-murder attack since Sept.

11, 2001, has strengthened calls for stricter gun control laws. Yet in Israel, where many civilians carry ďŹ rearms, questions on how the terrorists acquired their weapons did not spark national debate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israelis relate to guns totally differently than Americans,â&#x20AC;? said Marc Provisor, director of security projects for One Israel Fund, an organization that provides security equipment to Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley. Most of terrorists who have attacked Israelis in recent months have been neutralized by armed raelis, including police ofďŹ cers, off-duty Issoldiers, and even civilians.

How did they escape?

Rashi says at the ďŹ nal moment they had pangings for Repentance and that this merited them a higher place in purgatory â&#x20AC;&#x201D; closer to earth than those completely swallowed by the ground. But the verse says that â&#x20AC;&#x153;they did not die!â&#x20AC;? Rashiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s explanation is troubling. Ibn Ezra notes that the prophet Samuel descended from Korach, as did the authors of the Psalms that bear their names.

Shoppers not only come from the Five Towns but from nearby communities and occasionally even from New Jersey and Connecticut, BID ofďŹ cials said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the end of the season, we can make good sales,â&#x20AC;? said Pinny Teller, owner of the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clothing store, Legacy on Central Avenue. Facial recognition: Our new ďŹ rst line of defense

By Maayan Jaffe-Hoffman, JNS.org At around 1 pm on a cloudy day in April 2014, Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., 74, pulled into the rear parking lot of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City and opened ďŹ re. Shouting anti-Semitic slurs, he shot dead Dr. William Lewis Corporon, 69, and his grandson, Reat GrifďŹ n Underwood, 14, before ďŹ&#x201A;eeing for the nearby Jewish geriatric center, Village Shalom. There, he murdered 53-year-old Terri LaManno.

Miller told the Kansas City Star in an interview after his arrest that he conducted reconnaissance missions of the JCC and Village Shalom in the days before the shootings. But what might have happened if the security protocols at those sites were more advanced?

A new technology endorsed by the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America (JCCA) could play a key role in preventing future attacks. Earlier this year, JCCA announced FST Biometrics, an Israeli developer of In Motion IdentiďŹ cation (IMID) technology for biometric identiďŹ cation, as its preferred identity management vendor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;JCC managers are challenged with ďŹ nding the right balance to create safe spaces for fun, sport, and education, while also ensuring that their facilities are functioning optimally and creating a welcoming environment,â&#x20AC;? said Arie Melamed, chief marketing ofďŹ cer of FST Biometrics.

FST was founded in 2007 by Israel Defense Forces Maj.-Gen. Aharon Zeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;evi Farkash, the former head of Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Military Intelligence Directorate.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Farkash would visit the Erez checkpoint [from Gaza into Israel] and he saw that Palestinians were standing in the cue to enter Israel for four, ďŹ ve, or even six hours,â&#x20AC;? explained Melamed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reason was security.

The military was trying to make sure that no one passing through the checkpoint was a terrorist or on a watch list.â&#x20AC;?

The more Farkash watched the process, the more he realized that there must be a technology available that would ensure security and improve efďŹ ciency.

IMID utilizes a combination of facial recognition and body behavior, ties it to a database of information, and has the ability to simultaneously incorporate voice recognition by request. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It works like our brains,â&#x20AC;? said Melamed, describing that when you see someone you know from a distance, you recognize them by their gait or body behavior. As they get

closer, you see their face and verify if it is the person you believed it was. If there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough light, you listen to the personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice.

The results: 99.9997 percent accuracy, or the possibility that only three out of 10,000 people trying to gain false entry into a facility will succeed. Enrollment in the system takes 10 seconds.

Kyle Shideler, director of the Threat Information OfďŹ ce at the Center for Security Policy, a Washington, DC-based national security think tank, said facial recognition technologies such as the one provided by FST are an attractive option for security services in Western nations, where the prevention of terrorism is becoming a higher priority.

Shideler said that Jewish institutions want to become â&#x20AC;&#x153;as hard a target as possibleâ&#x20AC;? by installing a visible security presence, and that new technologies could play a key role in achieving that objective. He said that

terrorist organizations such as Hezbollahâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; much like Frazier Glenn Miller, the lone-wolf shooterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;engage in a high degree of reconnaissance before they conduct an attack. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The best opportunity to prevent a terror attack is ďŹ nding that threat during the reconnaissance phase,â&#x20AC;? Shideler said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you can determine who is observing you, who is coming by that shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be there, and turn the police on them, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.â&#x20AC;?

This is the philosophy of Adam Cohen, a volunteer facility manager for Bais Yaakov in West Hollywood. A few years after Buford Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neal Furrow, Jr. walked into the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Granada Hillsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;20 miles from Bais Yaakovâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;opened ďŹ re and wounded a receptionist, camp counselor, and three boys in 1999, Cohen decided to help Bais Yaakov improve security. All four of his daughters have attended the school, and one is still a student there.

Cohen started with traditional technologies â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a video camera and a keypad. Then, in 2009, he helped enlist Bais Yaakov, which at the time already used ďŹ ngerprint entry software, to be a test site for FST Biometrics. He helped secure a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to help fund the installment. Today, Bais Yaakov is considered one of the most secure schools in the nation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not an inexpensive technology,â&#x20AC;? said Cohen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But you want to make your facility as secure as possible, so that if someone is looking for a target, they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to come after you.â&#x20AC;?

Israeli Dodger Dean Kremer is a link to Koufax

Koufax â&#x20AC;&#x201D; recently ranked by ESPN as the best left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) history â&#x20AC;&#x201D; did not pitch Game 1 of the 1965 World Series because the game fell on Yom Kippur. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would do the same,â&#x20AC;? Kremer said.

Last month, the 20-year-old Kremer became the ďŹ rst Israeli citizen to sign with an MLB team.

The right-handed pitcher had also made history in 2015 by becoming the ďŹ rst Israeli drafted by an MLB team, the San Diego Padres, but he did not sign with that club and instead pitched for a year at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

He re-entered the draft in 2016 and was selected by the Dodgers in the 14th roundâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;up from his

In other words, he didn’t want himself or his Democratic Party colleagues to be saddled with an official vote recording their approval of this deal resulting in Americans and Israelis in danger of a nuclear Iran.

Kaine also seems to be weak on terrorism.

As Governor he appointed Muslim American Society (MAS) President Esam Omeish to the state’s immigration commission. In 2008 court filings, MAS was outed as part of the Muslim Brotherhood. Videotape from 2000 also surfaced where Omeish pledged to help Palestinians who understand “the jihad way is the way to liberate your land” After Omeish ties became public and he was force to resign, an anti-terror Muslim organization called The American Islamic Forum For Democracy (AIFD) scolded Kaine’s lack of vetting: “The AIFDs position is that this embarrassment could have been avoided altogether had Governor Kaine’s office applied basic vetting criteria before appointing Dr. Omeish to such an important position. The AIFD stands in opposition to the appointment and in support of the resignation on the ideological grounds that Dr. Omeish has repeatedly represented an Islamist agenda (political Islam) in his activism.

The ideology of Islamism runs against the interests of a strong national immigration policy and American security.”

In 2011 Kaine spoke at an event at which the founder of the U.S. version of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood, Jamal Barzinji was given a Lifetime Achievement award.

Hillary Clinton is correct in claiming that Tim Kaine is different than Donald Trump and Mike Pence. One of the biggest differences between Kaine and the Republicans is that like Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine is not a true supporter of Israel and either by design or total lack of awareness, associates with terrorist supporting, Jew-hating Muslim Brotherhood groups.

irginia Senator Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s vice-presidential running mate, has received significant funds from the antiIsrael organization J-Street and has shown support for organizations connected to the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood.

Kaine is a darling of J-Street. Founded in 2008 by George Soros and Hillary Clinton campaign director John Podesta, J-Street, which goes by the motto “pro-Israel, pro-peace,” has been described by liberal attorney Alan Dershowitz as being neither pro-Israel nor propeace. One of the group’s founders, Daniel Levy, has been quoted as saying that the creation of Israel in 1948 was wrong (there’s more if you are not convinced).

J-Street endorsed Kaine’s 2012 run for Senate but money speaks louder than words. According to Open Secrets, an organization which tracks campaign donations to all candidates of any party, J-Street — at $133,382 — was the second largest donor to Tim Kaine’s campaign committee between 2011 and 2014.

Open Secrets also reports that J-Street was the number one donor ($178,000) to Tim Kaine campaigns over the course of his entire political career.

In turn, Kaine has shown himself to be a supporter of J-Street.
