By Ed Weintrob Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, visiting Jewish supporters at a parlor meeting fundraiser in Jamaica Estates, Queens, Monday night, doubled down on his warning over the weekend that the Iranian nuclear deal would “take the Israelis and basically march them to the door of the oven.� “The reason I invoked the language of the Holocaust is because the Iranian government invoked that very language in their threat to destroy Israel and America,� the former Arkansas governor told supporters who crowded the home of Dr. Joseph and Karen Frager.

President Obama, speaking during a visit to Ethiopia on Monday, said Huckabee’s comments “would be ridiculous if they weren’t so sad.� “What’s ridiculous is that our government has made a deal with a country that’s spent 36 years under the ayatollahs threatening to kill every last Jew and every American and wipe Israel off the face of

the map,� Huckabee told the Queens gathering. “Are we supposed to pretend that they don’t mean it, and that they might not do it?� “I stood at the doors of the ovens in Auschwitz three times, and every time I am reminded that this happened because there were people across the world who looked the other way and refused to believe that such a thing was even possible,� he said. “These are not words that I would use or that I think are appropriate,� said Ron Dermer, Israel’s ambassador to the United States.

Republican Jeb Bush said “the use of that kind of language is just wrong.� Democrat Hillary Clinton said she was “offended personally� by Huckabee’s comments.

Most of those who attended Monday’s parlor meeting were from Queens, but some came from elsewhere on Long Island and New Jersey, including Lawrence Mayor Martin Oliner, Rabbi Marc Schneier of the Hampton Synagogue, and a group from Great Neck recruited by activists Paul and Drora Brody.

By Eric Tucker WASHINGTON (AP) — Jonathan Pollard, the former Navy intelligence analyst whose conviction of spying for Israel stoked ďŹ erce passions, has been granted parole and will be released from prison in November after nearly 30 years.

The decision to free Pollard from his life sentence, announced Tuesday.

Pollard, now 60, is due to be released on Nov. 21, three decades after he was arrested while trying to gain asylum at the Israeli Embassy in Washington. “We are looking forward to his release,�

More than 12,000 people attended last week’s Stop Iran Now rally in Times Square, the heart of New York City.

Actually it started in Times Square, the supporting crowd stretched back six blocks from the epicenter of the rally.

The speakers laid out facts and — even more important — they motivated the crowd to continue to take action against the P5+1 agreement after the rally was over.

Along with President Obama, the primary target of the speakers was New York’s senior senator, Charles Schumer, who is a key vote because of his leadership position in the party and his supposedly pro-Israel stance. If Schumer rejects the agreement other senators will follow.

Rally Organizer Jeffrey Wiesenfeld set the rally’s tone by repeatedly asking, “Where are you, Chuck?� He told the crowd about White House efforts to twist the arms of Democrats, and explained that the Administration had give a green light to “pro-Israel� Democrats to vote against the bill only after the Continued on page 12

Merrick man ed Nazis, became Allied mapmaker

By Brian Racow Walter Schacherl made battleďŹ eld maps that top Allied generals used to plan the lines of attack against Germany and Italy in World War II. Naturally, his work was top secret.

Seventy years after the war’s end, Schacherl, 97, of Merrick, does not believe he was ever released from his soldier’s oath.

When his wife, Ryfka, 93, and their daughter, Berta Weinstein, 57, encouraged him during an interview to answer questions about his clandestine service in the British army, he steadfastly refused.

Military map-making capabilities are still state secrets, he noted. Besides, “you never know who could be listening,� he said, showing how thoroughly his training had ingrained this wartime admonishment.

Schacherl (pronounced SHACK-er-ul) did not make it this far without being resolute. In 1957, he, Ryfka, and their 9-year-old son, Meir, immigrated to the United States with just $80, but Walter had already started over in new countries with far less. Before ďŹ nding middle-class success in America, his life was almost constant trouble.

Schacherl, who settled in Long Beach on arriving in the United States, spoke in the south Merrick house he shares with his wife, daughter and her family. (Berta was born a year after her parents and brother arrived in the United States, settling in Long Beach.)

Dressed in beige wool pants, a button-down shirt and red sweater, Walter sat beside Ryfka on a love seat in the living room and was conversational and good-humored, demonstrating a penchant for punch lines. He spoke in hoarse, accented English, except for quick asides in German to check details or joke with Ryfka, who grew up in Dresden before moving to British Palestine.

Born in 1918 in an Austrian Jewish family, Walter recalled growing up in Vienna, surrounded by anti-Semitism. Things were worse for him because he was one of the brightest students in his grade, he said with more than a hint of deďŹ ance. “There was always some kind of trouble for the Jewish people,â€? he said. A close childhood friend joined the Nazi SS. Schacherl’s father — who fought for Austria in World War I — owned a printing press and was regularly harassed and ďŹ nally driven out of business in the 1930s. When Germany annexed Austria in 1938, and Hitler arrived in Vienna, Schacherl saw the dictator riding in an open-air car without bodyguards while cheering crowds lined the street.

The 20-year-old Schacherl was unimpressed. “If it wasn’t for

the word ‘Jew,’ [Hitler] would never have gotten anywhere,â€? he reected.

Hailing from a family of gymnasts, Schacherl’s talents on the mats took him as a teenager to a competition in Czechoslovakia. In school, he starred in Goethe plays and dreamed of becoming a professional actor. But he fell just short of the mark on a placement test for an arts program, and his father said it was time that he learned the family business. Schacherl lost parts of his right pinkie and ring ďŹ ngers to the printing press — an injury that likely saved his life.

After the Nazis took over Austria, they began conscripting soldiers. An SS doctor examined Schacherl’s hand and sent him to a hospital instead of a barracks.

Fearing what else was to come for men his age, Schacherl decided to ee to Palestine, where an older brother had relocated a decade earlier. The Nazis were still allowing Jews to emigrate at the time, so Schacherl boarded an SS-guarded train bound for southern Europe. It was just months before Kristallnacht. He never saw his parents again.

Following a miserable trip, the ĂŠmigrĂŠs disembarked in Greece, where they waited a week for an illegal transport ship, returning from ferrying arms to leftist forces in the Spanish Civil War, to take them to Palestine. Once onboard, they had to evade British patrol boats that were impeding Jewish immigration. Schacherl made it to Palestine by jumping overboard as the ship neared a beach north of Tel Aviv and swimming ashore from the Mediterranean Sea. His only possessions were his sopping clothes.

Schacherl began life anew in Tel Aviv with his brother’s help, moving into the older sibling’s tiny, crowded apartment. “Three people had to share a bed,� Walter said.

As he often would throughout his life, Walter found work as a printer, joining his brother in the pressroom of the Haaretz newspaper.

Their mother sent letters with news from home, most of it bleak. Their father, never one for the pen, sent just one. The Nazis eventually robbed the Schacherls of their home and most of their belongs, allowing them to leave Vienna on foot. The last letter that Walter received from his mother was mailed from a concentration camp in Yugoslavia.

Walter needed little prodding to want to ďŹ ght Hitler’s Third Reich. Despite Jewish resentment of Britain’s administration of Palestine and immigration quotas, he volunteered for the British army during World War II. The British employed Schacherl’s printing skills as a covert cartographer, creating maps of enemy territory. He served two years in Egypt, where his unit was based in mountainside caves. At one point he fell into a coma, likely the result of some desert malady.

He awoke a week later in an army hospital, but he never received a satisfying medical explanation. Later he prepared maps for the Allied invasion of Sicily and served two years in Italy. He was stationed about 70 miles from the front, and he vividly remembers riding in trucks through Nazi-laid mineďŹ elds.

Germany’s surrender, and the end of the war in Europe, came on May 8, 1945. That day in Rome, Schacherl met a man who said he had been imprisoned with Schacherl’s parents in the Yugoslavian concentration camp. He did not know what had become of them.

Schacherl frantically searched for his parents after the war, but he never found another trace of them.

By Celia Weintrob The last remaining hospital on the Rockaway peninsula is “not going out of business,� the leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island said on Monday.

Bishop Lawrence C. Provenzano renewed a vow he made at a public forum in March 2014. “St. John’s will survive,� he said on Monday. “We are not going away.�

The 240-bed St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, owned by the diocese, is an essential public health facility serving Far Rockaway and the Five Towns, as well as points to the west that were formerly serviced by Peninsula Hospital Center, which closed in 2012.

He said that he plans to meet with leaders of the diverse community groups that make up St. John’s patient base.

Walsh acknowledged that, at the 231-bed Maryland hospital that he ran, Shore Regional Health in Easton, he was perceived as a hatchet man from New York. “They thought I was brought in to close everything down,� he said. While he did close some under-performing units, Walsh said that he redistributed resources and even added services Shore Regional was designated as a Magnet facility by the American Nurses Credentialing

The occasion of Monday’s commitment was the introduction by Bishop Provenzano of Gerard “Jerryâ€? Walsh as St. John’s new chief executive ofďŹ cer, marking the ďŹ rst time in two decades that the hospital will not rely on outside management ďŹ rms to run the institution on behalf of its board and the diocese.

Provenano pointed out that St. John’s has been doing charitable work at its Beach 19th Street location for 110 years, and by choosing Walsh as its new CEO, is making a ďŹ rm statement that it will continue to do so for the long haul. “We are committed as a faith-based safety net hospital to continue to do this work,â€? Bishop Provenano said. “ St. John’s hospital has no short term or long term plan to close.â€?

Walsh, 59, has a 17-year track record of turning around small troubled hospitals in Maryland, and is looking forward to returning to in Queens, where he grew up. “I’m thrilled to be back here, where all my family is located,â€? said Walsh, who was born in Jamaica, raised in East Emhurst, and earned a degree in healthcare administration from St. John’s University. His ďŹ rst assignment was managing a nursing unit. “I started from the bottom and worked my way up,â€? he said. “The reality of hospitals is where patients get cared for, not the administrative or ďŹ nancial departments.â€?

Walsh said he views his St. John’s assignment as a opportunity for “creating change.â€? “I’m known for putting together a good team, a solid community advisory board, and one of the ďŹ rst things we’ll do is create a new strategic plan for the next three years,â€? he said, emphasizing that he’s “looking forward

When asked about the progress of the St. John’s emergency room expansion, Vice President of Development Suzanne Timmer said that the work is 65 percent ďŹ nished, and they are hoping for Albany to come through with $9.2 million in October that will allow phase one to be completed.

Plans called for doubling the size of the emergency area from its current 12,500 square feet to 23,000. The emergency department was originally designed to treat 15,000 patients per year, but it is now serving more than 40,000. The expanded department will have 19 main private treatment rooms, 21 internal disposition areas, six fast-track cubicles and 14 psychiatric treatment areas.

Walsh replaces Richard L. Brown, who had succeeded Nelson Toebbe in August 2013. Both Brown and Toebbe were employed by Louisianabased Pitts Management, which ran St. John’s on behalf of the diocese.

St. John’s has navigated turbulent waters in recent years. Rising costs and revenue losses forced it to close its chemical dependency unit two years ago. Last year, the hospital sold the Bishop Henry B. Hucles Nursing Home in Brooklyn to Providence Care for $29.5 million, and the Bishop Waldo McLean Nursing Home, now known as Beach Gardens, to Michael Melnicke and Leo Friedman, who managed the facility for two years prior to the sale. EHS realized $1.8 million from that transaction, and other ďŹ nancial considerations are tied to reimbursements for hospital services, ofďŹ cials said.

The U.S. had dangled the prospect of Pollard’s release during Israel-Palestinian talks last year, but the peace efforts collapsed and nothing came of the proposal.

Though the decision was announced just weeks after the U.S.-Iran nuclear deal, White House ofďŹ cials strongly denied that Pollard’s release had anything to do with that agreement, or that was it was intended as a concession to Israel. Secretary of State John Kerry, who testiďŹ ed before Congress on the nuclear deal on Tuesday, told reporters Pollard’s parole was “not at allâ€? connected.

OfďŹ cials in Israel have said that while they would welcome the release, it would not ease their opposition to the Iran agreement.

The Justice Department, for its part, noted that federal sentencing rules in place at the time of Pollard’s prosecution entitled him to parole after serving 30 years of his life sentence.

Department lawyers did not contest his parole bid, which was granted following a hearing this month before the U.S. Parole Commission that took into account Pollard’s behavior in prison and whether he was likely to commit new crimes if released.

yers say they intend to ask President Barack Obama to grant him clemency as well as authority to leave the United States and move to Israel immediately. But the White House quickly shot down that prospect, saying Pollard had committed “very serious crimes� and would serve his sentence under the law. “The president has no intention of altering the terms of Mr. Pollard’s parole,� said Alistair Baskey, a spokesman for the White House’s National Security Council.

Pollard has faced health problems in recent years. He is being held in the federal prison in Butner, North Carolina, and his lawyers said they have secured housing and a job for him in New York once he is released.

They said he was “looking forward to being reunited with his beloved wife, Esther.�

The Pollard prosecution represented one of the most sensational and divisive spy cases in recent American history. His supporters maintain that he provided information critical to Israel’s security interests at a time when the country was under threat from its Middle East neighbors, but prosecutors and many in the U.S. intelligence community have long maintained that his disclosure of voluminous classiďŹ ed documents constituted a criminal breach on par with that of America’s most infamous spies.

The U.S. has said Pollard provided reams of sensitive and classiďŹ ed information to Israel, including about radar-jamming techniques and the electronic capabilities of nations hostile to Israel, including Saudi Arabia.

A court statement from then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger said Pollard did “irrevocableâ€? damage to the U.S. and had provided the Israelis with many U.S. classiďŹ ed publications and classiďŹ ed messages and cables. Portions of the Weinberger document that have been declassiďŹ ed state that Pollard admitted passing to his Israeli contacts “an incredibly large quantity of classiďŹ ed documentsâ€? and that U.S. troops could be endangered because of the theft.

Eliot Lauer, one of Pollard’s lawyers, rejected that assessment, saying his client “loves this country� and “never intended to do anything to harm the United States.� “We are grateful and delighted that our client will be released soon,� said a statement from Pollard’s lawyers, Lauer and Jacques Semmelman.

The National Council of Young Israel said it “is extraordinarily grateful� for the Parole Commission’s action. “A model prisoner who publicly and wholeheartedly expressed remorse for his actions, Jonathan’s release has long been supported by the major decision makers who were intimately involved in his case, numerous prominent American leaders, the Israeli government, and countless people throughout the world,� NCYI said.

Agudath Israel of America expressed “much joy and gratitude to Hashem� at news of Pollard’s impending release.

It asked President Obama “to take whatever executive actions may be necessaryâ€? to allow Pollard to move to Israel upon his release, instead of his having to remain in the U.S. during a ďŹ ve year probationary period.

The Conference of Presidents said “we do not believe that there is any connection to the nuclear agreement with Iran. The parole date was set at the time of his sentencing and the current parole process proceeded the negotiations with Iran.�

By Jeffrey F. Barken, JNS.org The July 14 announcement of a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers has drawn much public criticism, praise, and punditry and will continue to do so over the course of the ongoing 60day period for Congress to review the agreement.

That issue is arguably most pressing in the New York metropolitan area, home to more Jews than any region of its kind nationwide, with a Jewish senator — Chuck Schumer — viewed as pivitol to Senate action. Not surprisingly, then, the Big Apple has been the epicenter of both education and advocacy, including events ranging from discussions to protests, in the weeks since the Iran deal was reached.

mestic consumption, but they appear in English on Twitter, and you can’t get Twitter in Iran,” Block said, suggesting that proponents of the nuclear deal see only what they want to see and are too trusting of the Iranians, who should be considered their nemesis.

“War is not the alternative,” Block concluded, refuting U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s oftrepeated assertion. “A better deal is.”

Block only got the chance to entertain three questions from the crowd before a loud group of attendees interrupted decorum, urging members of the audience to join them in a protest against the deal that would take place the next day in New York’s Times Square.

Before Block’s address listed the weaknesses and shortcomings of the Iran deal, a leaflet distributed to attendees by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) listed six consequences of a bad deal with Iran, adding that “Congress must oppose the proposed deal.” According to the leaflet, the deal signed this month in Vienna will: legitimize Iran as a nuclear threshold state; raise the prospect of war; spur a nuclear arms race; increase Iranian support of terrorism; strengthen the Iranian regime; and undermine and threaten regional allies.

Central to those bullets is a concern that the U.S. is abandoning more than 20 years of focused policy initiatives carefully devised to curtail Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Similarly, the AIPAC flier asserted that the unprecedented negotiations with Tehran, the infamous state sponsor of terrorism, “call into question America’s global leadership.”

Since there is no provision in the deal effectively dismantling Iran’s current nuclear infrastructure, critics argue that American security guarantees to its allies are now defunct. They forecast that the deal’s $150 billion in sanctions relief for Iran will embolden the regime’s terrorist activities and further destabilize the region, and that a nuclear Iran means an existential threat to Israel.

“The talks were extended at every deadline, because desperation cannot be exhausted,” said Block, arguing that Western diplomats were duped by Iran, surrendering their significant advantage in the form of punishing sanctions, and ultimately succumbing to the ambition to make a historic deal at any price.

At the core of Block’s argument lies an assessment that the anti-American, anti-Israel, and antiSemitic threats delivered regularly by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian officials should be taken seriously.

“We’re told the ayatollah’s threats are for do-

At the same time, while Núñez is conscious that the world powers who negotiated the deal are taking many risks, he remains optimistic and has faith in diplomacy.

“Through all the long [negotiating] sessions [with Iran], it seems the U.N. got what it wanted, a calibrated framework and a permanent inspection by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency),” he said. (But rather than being “anytime, anywhere,” inspections of the nuclear program will be accompanied by 24 days of advance notice for Iran, to the dismay of the deal’s critics.)

On the same day as the TIP event, President Obama was in New York to defend the nuclear deal on the set of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

“I really want people to pay attention to this issue, learn about it, and then contact your elected representatives and express your opinion,” Obama said. “This is an example of where we have a huge issue of war and peace. Either we stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon through diplomacy or potentially we have a military option.”

Members of Congress, in fact, are sure to continuously hear from their constituents about the Iran deal during the 60-day review period. Particularly in New York, the decision facing the state’s Jewish senator, Chuck Schumer—seen as a key Democratic vote who could help swing the deal’s fate in either direction in the Senate—has already been the subject of much debate. With 54 Republicans serving in the Senate, 13 Democratic votes against the deal are needed to override Obama’s veto of a potential Congressional rejection of the agreement.

For now, the specifics of Schumer’s pulse on the issue are unknown, as are many still-unfolding aspects of the Iran saga.

Time to evict J Street from our communal tent

By Charles Jacobs and Elliott Hamilton The recent announcement of the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran has sparked deep concern and even outrage in the Jewish community. In an almost unprecedented moment for American Jewry, the majority of prominent Jewish organizations have lined up in order to combat this deal. This historic display of Jewish unity comes because of a clear belief that Israel and the Jewish people have been placed in a life-threatening situation.

But the J Street lobby stands apart.

When the dealâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s framework was reached in early April, J Street co-authored a statement with the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC) and the Arab American Institute, welcoming the agreement. Now that the details have become known and almost every major Jewish organization is trying to kill the deal, J Street is undertaking a multimillion dollar campaign to get Jews to support an arrangement that at best keeps Iran nuke-free for about a decade while it gives the mullahs $150 billion to arm Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enemies. This puts J Street in direct confrontation with the more than 80 percent of the Jews of Israel, whose political parties from left to right are ďŹ ercely united against President Barack Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deal.

J Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaigning for the Iran deal comes as no surprise to those who have been carefully watching the organization since its inception in 2008. J Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ptollolicy on Iran has never been aligned with the rest of the American Jewish community.

J Street has a history of taking signiďŹ cant sums of money from anti-Israel sourcesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and lying about it. For example, J Street continuously lied about its funding from George Soros, who has blamed Israel and the Jewish people for the rise of global anti-Semitism. While J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami kept denying it, Eli Lake reported in 2010 that J Street acquired $750,000 from Sorosâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family. Ben-Ami was eventually forced to apologize for lying.

Genevieve Lynch, a board member of the NIAC, also funded J Street. NIAC is no ally of the Jewish community, and has recently created a 501(c)4 to counter pro-Israel groupsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attempts to halt the Iran deal.

In 2012, J Street spent $100,000 trying to convince lawmakers on Capitol Hill to both ease the rhetoric against Iran and to alter the status of the Palestinian Diplomatic Mission to the U.S. J Street has also received funding from the Ploughshares Fund, Inc., a global security foundation that supports a â&#x20AC;&#x153;peaceful world, including on free of nuclear weapons.â&#x20AC;? This same organization spent millions of dollars pushing for Chuck Hagelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nomination for Secretary of Defense and lobbying to lift sanctions off Iran. According to the Ploughshares Fundâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Form 990 in 2012, J Street acquired $25,000 â&#x20AC;&#x153;to support efforts to educate members of Congress on the consequences that preemptive use of military force against Iranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nuclear program

may have on Israel.â&#x20AC;? In its Form 990s in both 2013 and 2014, it shows that Ploughshares gave J Street a total of $275,000 â&#x20AC;&#x153;to use a pro-Israel frame to educate members of Congress on the dangers that a mili-tary confrontation with Iran could have for both Israel and the U.S., and to promote political so-lutions to the nuclear impasse.â&#x20AC;?

Why would a seemingly pro-Israel organization acquire funds from pro-Iran sources to promote a pro-Iran agenda to the United States Congress? One reason seems clear: J Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usefulness to Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s adversaries is its â&#x20AC;&#x153;pro-Israel frame,â&#x20AC;? and that can be successfully monetized.

Some of J Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s senior leaders have at times let the mask slip. Marcia Freedman, a member of J Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Advisory Council, told the 2015 J Street Conference delegation, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israelis should not have a state.â&#x20AC;? Daniel Levy, one of J Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s co-founders, told the 2011 J Street conference that if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

true, as some say, that Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neighbors hate the Jewish state not for what it does, but for what it is, then â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israel really ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a very good idea.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to its pro-Iran deal lobbying, J Street has often lobbied against laws that most Ameri-can Jews support. For example, J Street opposed the Roskam-Vargas â&#x20AC;&#x153;U.S.-Israel Trade and Commercial Enhancement Act,â&#x20AC;? an anti-BDS bill, claiming that it â&#x20AC;&#x153;did not believe it would be appropriate for the United States government to spend time and resources preventing or reporting on such efforts.â&#x20AC;?

So what should be done about J Street?

Many Jewish Federations and Jewish Community Relations Councils (JCRCs) have accepted J Street within their â&#x20AC;&#x153;big tent.â&#x20AC;? They have done this in order to keep the peace and to prevent leftleaning Jews from withholding donations. This is still the case after J Street was denied a seat at the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and after its leader, BenAmi, referred to the Jewish Federations and the JCRCs as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;multi-headed hydra.â&#x20AC;?

But the times have dramatically changed.

Israel and its Jews are directly threatened with nuclear extinction and J Street is working hard to enable this catastrophe. With the majority of Jewish organizations coming together to combat this existentially dangerous deal with Iran, now is the time for Jewish leaders who care about unity and who care about Jewish life to show J Street their tentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exit ďŹ&#x201A;ap.

Pro-Iran J Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which is spending millions of dollars to promote a deal that threatens Jewish life, receiving signiďŹ cant sums of cash from anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sources to promote pro-Iran causes, and dangerously undermining the collective Jewish unity needed to block the deadly Iranian threatâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;should be drummed out of organized Jewish life.

olitical discussion can be frustrating.

Especially recently, it seems the conversation has become even more binary than usual.

If the Supreme Court’s decision on samesex marriage was not supported, hate is attributed to the opponents.

If there was disagreement on ObamaCare, it must be due to indifference to the very real pain and plight of poverty.

If the reaction to Ferguson did not echo the public’s outcry, it must be racist.

And now, rejection of the Iran deal. That’s simple — it must be warmongering.

The fact that people disagree with the substance of the agreement, seeing in it weaknesses and flaws, and identify in the deal the possibility of a worse war — that’s not considered. It’s just an immediate dis-

missive “you prefer war.” To present such a simplistic narrative — it’s either this (bad) deal or war — is divisive. It narrows the discussion. It limits the possibilities of arriving at a more secure and responsible agreement.

Radical regimes call for radical measures.

Even in diplomacy, there should be radical diplomacy. Diplomacy is not some excuse for softies, for wimps to be taken for a ride. Diplomacy is to be undertaken to avoid war. A successful and skilled negotiation takes tremendous skill, intuition, savvy and painful compromise. Negotiation is a war of its own kind.

To be effective, radical diplomacy requires no less preparation than war. A different kind of preparation, but no less serious.

As more and more information is being revealed about this Iran deal, there is more and more worry about the safety of America, of Israel, of the world.

It seems like a game changer in the wrong direction. It’s nice to feel relieved in the short term, but I am thinking in the long term.

When I read about the 24-day inspection notice, I shudder. When I read about the clause preventing a “sabotage” of Iran’s nuclear facilities — guaranteeing help to a nefarious enemy (Iran) against an attack by an ally (Israel) — I am seriously troubled.

I listened carefully to President Obama’s press conference about the Iran deal. He made some interesting points, such as why he intentionally isolated the nuclear issue.

All in all, though, the more I heard the more troubled I felt. Not because I want war.

The only alternatives don’t need to be this deal or war, the narrative pedaled to the masses. The president says that if people oppose the deal, they should be hontest, admitting they feel that the course of war is the answer.

Hey @TheIranDeal, I have questions BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT

T

his week, a bunch of journalists, foreign policy wonks, and assorted pundits received an email from the White House that began with the legendary words, “Hey, I’m Ben Rhodes, a Deputy National Security Advisor to President Obama. For the past few years, I’ve been working closely with America’s negotiating team, which was tasked with finding a way to achieve a diplomatic resolution that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.”

Don’t you just love that “Hey,” greeting?

So informal, so accessible, so confident, so quintessentially Obaman. And it didn’t end there.

“Last week,” Rhodes continued, “after two years of tough negotiations, our team along with our international partners achieved just that.”

Perhaps anticipating a chorus of “Oh no, you didn’t,” Rhodes added that “it’s important that everyone here and around the world understands exactly what’s in it and how it’ll work.” And then came this assurance: “This is a strong deal, with significant constraints on Iran’s nuclear program, and unprecedented access to Iranian nuclear facilities—including 24/7, continuous monitoring.”

So what do you do if you still have doubts?

The purpose of the round-robin email from Rhodes was to announce the latest PR initiative from the White House, in the form of a Twitter feed with the handle @TheIranDeal.

(If Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had done the same, the Obama administration and its sympathizers would now all be whining about “hasbara,” the Hebrew word for public diplomacy, but let’s leave that aside for now.)

According to Rhodes, @TheIranDeal is “dedicated to delivering the facts and answering your questions about the deal and how it enhances American national security.”

What that means—and here, Rhodes was explicit—is ensuring that America isn’t dragged “into another conflict in the Middle East.” In other words, the choice is between agreeing to this lousy, feeble deal or risking the lives and limbs of our troops in an Iraq/Afghanistan redux. But if you’re still not convinced, you can send comments and questions to @ TheIranDeal, and they will be answered. As

the Twitter page declares, “Tweet us your questions, and we’ll set the record straight.”

As of the afternoon of Wednesday, July 22, more than 24 hours after the Twitter feed was launched, and with more than 12,000 followers already signed up, @TheIranDeal had published exactly 19 tweets. They were all pretty platitudinous, more or less, for example, “Why #IranDeal is a vital step: Problems like sponsoring terror or detaining citizens made more difficult to resolve if Iran acquired a nuke.” As for answering the difficult questions, I saw no evidence of any effort to do so. Two questions I sent them remain, at the time of this writing, unanswered, and dozens of friends and colleagues have told me that they were hearing the same virtual silence.

Maybe the White House is short-staffed.

Maybe President Barack Obama’s confidant, Valerie Jarrett, has suddenly decided she doesn’t like the idea. Maybe they don’t know how to answer the difficult questions. I can’t say for sure, but what I do know is this: With @TheIranDeal, the Obama administration has pledged itself to a direct dialogue with the citizens of this country and with the global public at large. So we need to hold them to account and bombard them with questions and comments.

In that light, I modestly offer some suggestions, in no particular order, as to what you all should be raising. There are any number of topics—the lifting of sanctions,

the support for terrorism, the Iranian backing for Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the weak inspections regime, the woeful human rights situation in Iran—that must be addressed. All you have to remember is to keep your questions within Twitter’s 140-character limit. Oh, and maybe start off with the word “Hey,” since this is now apparently an acceptable addition to the lexicon of political terminology.

• Hey @TheIranDeal, how will you prevent the sanctions windfall coming Iran’s way from being used to kill more Syrian kids?

• Hey @TheIranDeal, if Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful, why is the regime only “called upon” not to undertake ballistic missile activity?

• Hey @TheIranDeal, why are you claiming “24/7 continuous monitoring” when the Iranians have at least 24 days to approve inspections?

• Hey @TheIranDeal, what’s your response to nuclear expert Olli Heinonen’s claim that the 24-day window will make hiding nuclear arms development work easier?

• Hey @TheIranDeal, why are you taking Gen. Qassem Solaimani, a man responsible for the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq, off the sanctions list?

• Hey @TheIranDeal, how do you assess nuclear expert David Albright’s claim that installing new centrifuges will lower Iran’s break-out time to a few days or weeks?

After the break, it will be too late

I feel just the opposite. Those promoting the agreement should be honest, admitting that if a strong, secure deal would not be accepted by Iran, then war would be inevitable.

The Administration understands that the nation is sick of war and, therefore, it considers a weak, insecure deal to be acceptable.

The promoters of the deal need to be honest. Neville Chamberlain in a way really had no choice but to sign the Munich Agreement.

His country and Europe were still weary from WWI. The last thing they could think of was another war.

Yet, another war was inevitable, and the Munich Agreement just delayed the inevitable. It felt good to believe that the reprieve was real. People needed a break, and that’s what they got. Then, the worst war of all was brought on instead.

If the superficial narrative of “Iran Deal or War” is being insisted on, fine. History will record what element of this binary discussion will have truly catalyzed war.

By then it will be too late.

How NOT to win friends and influence people JUDY JOSZEF WHO’S IN THE KITCHEN

O

n Facebook last week, I noticed a post by someone I wasn’t friends with, but who’s name sounded vaguely familiar.

Leslie Kellner: I knew that name from somewhere but couldn’t quite place it. Along with the post was a picture of four boys, circa the 1960s, in dark suits, white shirts and boutonnières. Looked like a bar mitzvah picture.

At a quick glance I didn’t recognize anyone and decided to move on, when Leslie added a comment asking if anyone recognized the boy on the right. At closer inspection, I realized it was none other than my husband Jerry. I commented that I was married to the boy on the right.

He commented back, “Tell Jerry, Leslie Kellner has some stories about the old days.

Let me know his expression when you tell him.”

In the same thread online, he went on to tell one of those “stories.” It was his bar mitzvah and his friends were sitting on the dais, Jerry and his brother on the far right. Some time during the evening, the caterer let Mrs. Kellner know that one of the floral centerpieces on the right of the dais was missing.

No one took responsibility.

Though Jerry was usually suspected, no one was blamed him. But the evidence, once the bar mitzvah movies were developed, showed Jerry lifting the flowers and putting them under the table. Caught red handed!

I commented back that I would give Jerry the message.

A few minutes later, it hit me. I remembered where I heard Leslie’s name. Jerry’s mom told the story of when her friend, Mrs. Kellner, called her up and said, “Molly, your son told Leslie if he didn’t pay him the money he owed him, for the candy bar he bought from him, he would kill him.”

Since Jerry’s brother was in first grade at the time, Mrs. Joszef laughed and said she would talk to her son. Mrs. Kellner asked how she could be laughing, after all it was a very serious matter. Jerry’s mom responded with, “He’s 6 and in first grade. He’s not going to kill your son.”

When Jerry got home from work, later that night I told him about chatting with Leslie online. I told him about the floral centerpiece, and asked how he could do such a thing.

“Why in the world would you hide the centerpiece under the table?”

I asked angrily. He responded, “Um I don’t know, could it be it was 47 years ago and I was just a stupid kid at the time. Are you seriously angry at me now, for then?”

I told him Leslie messaged me and said he had lots of stories from the old days. Jerry said he would love to hear them, as he had no recollection of the centerpiece robbery he was involved in. And so, a few days later, Leslie filled me in on a few more unsavory escapades.

Like the time Leslie and Jerry would be on the same school bus with Tony, the bus driver. One day, when they were in third grade, after a snow storm, while waiting for the bus, Leslie began to roll around in the snow until he was covered from head to toe.

For those of you horrified at this point — especially Leslie’s beautiful aunt, Mrs. Marilyn Katz, whom I hear is an avid reader of my column — I will tell you, that when Jerry started high school he turned the corner and become one of the kindest, giving and most caring people. Obviously, he had a lot of making to do.

And yes, after I told Jerry all of the stories, he felt awful and called Leslie to apologize.

The two spent quite a while on the phone reminiscing and plan to meet in person.

I might just tag along in case Jerry reverts back to his old ways, or Leslie finally decides to take vengeance.

So instead of whipping your friends, try this whipped feta recipe instead. This recipe comes from Ina Garten and is delicious!

His mom screamed and asked, why he would want to go to school all wet. Leslie just shrugged, because after all, how could he tell his mom, that he was pre-warned by Jerry that if he didn’t get on the bus full of snow, there would be a price to pay, a heavy one.

Yes, Jerry was bad to the bone. It came to a point that his mom had to pay Tony, the bus driver, $5 a week protection money.

Then there was the time at the end of third grade when Leslie’s mom told him, they would be spending the summer at Turkin’s bungalow colony. Leslie said he remembered, as if it were yesterday. He threw himself at his mom’s feet and cried out, “No, you can’t do that to me. Don’t make me spend the summer with Jerry, anything but that.”

Turns out the summer wasn’t that bad after the first two incidents. On the day everyone arrived, Jerry asked Leslie if he wanted to play war. Leslie said he would and a group of boys headed through the woods. “Somehow” (hey, Jerry’s my husband, I, at least have to try to make him look a little less evil) Leslie was roughed up a bit and left behind in woods that he was completely unfamiliar with. Silver lining was, he figured his way out and was nor lost again the rest of the summer.

The second incident was when Leslie was sick with a fever and virus and was sleeping in his bungalow. With his mom out of the bungalow Jerry and his friend decided to pay him a visit. Poor Leslie woke up disoriented and being bombarded with pillows. Let’s just say Jerry took bikur cholim (visiting the sick) to a whole new level.

Ingredients: 6 ounces feta, crumbled 2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 2/3 cup olive oil, divided 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons minced shallots (2 shallots) 2 teaspoons minced garlic (2 cloves) 2 tablespoons good red wine vinegar 2 pounds ripe heirloom or cherry tomatoes, 1/2-inch-diced 3 tablespoons julienned fresh basil leaves, plus extra for serving 20 to 25 (1/2-inch-thick) diagonal baguette slices, Directions: For the whipped feta: Place the feta and cream cheese in a food processor and pulse till cheeses are mixed.

Add 1/3 cup of the olive oil and lemon juice, 1 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Mix until smooth.

Tomatoes: Within one hour of serving, mix the shallots, garlic and vinegar in a medium bowl.

Set side for 5 minutes. Whisk the remaining 1/3 cup of olive oil, 1 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp.

Pepper. Add the remaining tomatoes, stir gently and set aside. For ten minutes, then add the basil.

Assembly: Spread each piece of toasted bread with the whipped feta, then with a slotted spoon, place tomatoes on top and sprinkle with extra basil.If you like, you can add some pine nuts, but it’s optional.

Reading the Ten Commandments horizontally RABBI BINNY FREEDMAN THE HEART OF JERUSALEM

W

hen Rav Yitzchak Hutner (author of the Pachad Yitzchak) was learning in Slobodka Yeshiva in the early 1900s, one of the students went from Slobodka to Berlin to be with Rav Dovid Tzvi Hoffman.

When he returned to Slobodka, the Alter of Slobodka (the head of the Slobodka yeshiva) asked for student’s impressions of the German people.

Among other things, the student shared that the Germans were a kind people with a polite way of speaking. As an example, when giving directions, a German, after imparting the instructions, would politely ask “nicht wahr?” (is this not so?). This showed refinement.

At that point a debate broke out between the students of the yeshiva. Was it right to praise the Germans? Some suggested true and lasting ethics should be culled from our own sources. But there was one student who persisted and suggested that ethical standards and admirable forms of behavior could be learned from the Germans and even praised. “Nicht wahr?” is a sign of politeness and thoughtfulness; it showed modesty and was admirable — why not learn it from the Germans?

Fifty years later, Rav Hutner was giving a class in the Chaim Berlin Yeshiva in New York. A Jew walked in and said, “Do you remember me? I was that student in Slobodka that complimented the custom of the Ger-

mans and insisted that their way of speaking showed how gentle and fine a people they were.” Rav Hutner, indicating that he did remember this student, extended his hand to greet him. The Jew stuck out his hand and Rav Hutner saw there was a hook in place of a hand. He had lost his hand in the concentration camps.

He told Rav Hutner, “When the German cut off my hand in the concentration camp, do you know what he said?” The German said, “It hurts — nicht wahr?”

“You, Rav Hutner were right, and I was wrong.”

This week, in his final soliloquy to the Jewish people, Moshe repeats for them the Ten Commandments given at Sinai some 40 years earlier. The Torah reminds us that these Ten Commandments were engraved and given on two tablets (Devarim 5:19).

Why they were not simply engraved on one larger tablet, or in smaller letters?

Jewish tradition (in the Mechilta) suggests that this was so we could read these ten commandments in two directions: top to bottom, and side to side. Top to bottom, the first commandment is “I Am G-d,” and the second is “have no idols.” But side to side (horizontally) the second (or parallel) commandment, at the top of the second tablet is “do not murder.”

Of course, this begs the question: why do we need to read the Ten commandments horizontally?

J

ewish tradition understood that there would come a time when man would attempt to separate the first and the sixth commandments. In the age of the enlightenment in 18th and 19th century Europe, philosophers would suggest that one did not need to believe in the Divine in order to know that one should not murder.

Societies began to gradually distance themselves from theism and belief in G-d and move towards humanism, with man as the source of all knowledge and creativity. In such a philosophy, one might expect to see as an imperative the principle of honoring the life of one’s fellow human being.

Yet, in less than a century, in the G-d-less society of Nazi-occupied Europe, human beings were less valuable than a bar of soap.

In the summer of 1944, Joel Roth negotiated a deal with no less than Adolph Eichmann, author of the infamous Nazi solution. The Nazi armies were desperate for supplies and Eichmann was willing to trade the 400,000 Jews of Hungary, already being deported to Auschwitz, for 1,000 trucks. To prove his point, Eichmann stopped the ovens at Auschwitz for two weeks during the height of the mass killings, when they were gassing 10,000 Jews a day.

But Roth’s pleas fell on deaf ears. Not only did the Allies refuse to listen, they arrested Roth and threw him into a prison cell, where he eventually committed suicide. If 400 Jews

are not even worth a truck, what does that make one Jew not worth: a steering wheel?

What indeed makes something right or wrong, if there is no objective authority (Gd) to make that determination?

Some say society arrives at a social contract and together agrees on an “objective ethic.” But what happens when a society (like Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia, Communist China or Cambodia of the Khmer Rouge decides that what is right is wrong, and what is wrong is really right? Was it “right” to murder one-and-a-half million Jewish children in the Holocaust?

When there is no Divine Authority, and thus no absolute laws, in the end, there is no objective morality; ultimately anything goes.

Thirty-two-hundred years ago, Moshe reminded us one last time that there have to be two tablets: If we stop seeing the Divine as the source of morality, we will soon lose morality. But at the same time we also need to remember as we embrace a deeper relationship with G-d, that every human being is created in G-d’s image; if we become so focused on G-d that we lose sight of the Godliness of the person next to us, we will ultimately lose our relationship with G-d.

Perhaps that is why this week’s portion of Va’Etchanan always follows Tisha B’Av when we traditionally mourn and recall the great calamities that befell the Jewish people through history. Two thousand years ago we lost everything, beginning a long dark road of exile precisely because we stopped reading the Ten Commandments horizontally.

Perhaps it is time for the world to get back to horizontal reading.

There’s no need to add to Torah, perfect as is RABBI AVI BILLET PARSHA OF THE WEEK

T

owards the beginning of this week’s Torah portion, Va’Eschanan, we are given Moshe’s reminder that we are not to add anything to the Torah, nor to detract from it (4:2). This is the mitzvah of bal tosif, not to add.

Rashi quotes the Sifrei, saying do not add a fifth paragraph to the Sheman, and do not add a fifth specie to the lulav bundle. Ramban Rabbenu Bachaye brings another example: saying a fourth sentence when pronouncing the three-sentence Priestly blessing, Birkat Kohanim, while various baalei tosafot mentioned having a fifth corner added to tzitzit.

Some commentaries follow the line of thinking of the phrase “Kol hamosif go’rea,” that anyone who adds actually detracts from something that is perfect as it is.

Other approaches include warnings about the downsides of adding to the Torah — such as Ibn Ezra, who reminds us not to think that adding to the Torah is considered serving G-d.

But what is considered adding, and what is not?

Explaining Rashi, Rabbi Ovadiah MiBartenura says that fulfilling a mitzvah twice

is not bal tosif. Though he does not give examples of what that might include, presumably wearing tefillin longer, saying Shema twice, giving tzedakah a second time, visiting someone who is ill a second time, is not considered a violation.

It is also not a violation of bal tosif if a Jew who is not obligated to fulfill a mitzvah nevertheless does so. He brings the example of Michal daughter of King Saul wearing tefillin and the wife of the prophet Yonah going to the Temple for the holidays (the mitzvah of being oleh l’regel), and that women are allowed, but not required, to put their hands on a korban (offering) when they would bring one.

Ramban questions whether eating in the sukkah eight days violates bal tosif, while the Rosh indicates that since eating an “extra” day in the sukkah does not detract from the mitzvah (it does not fit in the category of kol hamosif go’rea) it is permissible.

Seforno warns about removing from the Torah. Sometimes a person might rationalize that if the reason for the mitzvah is irrelevant that that the mitzvah is irrelevant. King Solomon famously did this when he expanded his number of wives, his number of horses and his wealth far beyond what the Torah allows,

saying that it would not steer his heart away from G-d. Of course, he was wrong. And his removing this mitzvah from his own tally demonstrated perfectly how things can go sour when a person, even as wise as Solomon, thinks he knows better than G-d.

Other commentaries take lessons from Moshe’s own life, and the experience of the Israelites in the wilderness, to show how Moshe learned the important lesson of not adding and not subtracting from G-d’s word.

Focusing on Israel’s choices, Chizkuni has Moshe telling the people, “When I said go conquer the land, you added ‘Let’s send spies.’ That caused everyone to die in the wilderness. And when I said ‘Don’t go up,’ you disregarded the instruction and Amalek and Canaan came out to fight.”

The Or HaChaim says that Moshe had added to G-d’s instruction when he hit the rock (Bamidbar 20), and he took away from G-d’s instruction when he did not act decisively in the face of Zimri’s rebellion, before Pinchas zealously took the law into his own hands (Bamidbar 25). Both of these incidents significantly detracted from Moshe’s leadership role.

ting the rock when he was merely told to speak to it — caused a “lessening” of the faith of the people in G-d.

The only adding which is considered allowed because it is not really adding, is what many commentaries refer to as “making a geder” (fence), making rules that help a person fulfill a mitzvah or not violate a mitzvah.

For example, the concept of muktze (not to touch things that are forbidden to be used on the Sabbath) is a fence — if I am not allowed to make a fire, I don’t even touch a match; if I can’t drive a car, I don’t pick up my car keys.

Ramban notes that with gedarim (fences), it is important to remember that it is not Gd’s word, but an effort to help us fulfill G-d’s word, that we are indeed adding to our personal practice, but not to the Torah.

Where does this leave us? At a place where we are challenged to know and understand G-d’s rules as best as we can. This Friday is the 15th of Av, a time that the Talmud, at the end of Taanit, says is one of the happiest days on the Jewish calendar. One of the reasons the Talmud gives for this is because in the times of the Temple, the people were freed up from collecting wood for the altar, and therefore had more time to study Torah.

May we utilize as much of our free time as possible to study more Torah, so we can be knowledgeable in what to do, what not to do, and how we can best fulfill our responsibilities as Jews without adding or detracting from the Torah.

(Although Wiesenfeld didn’t mention it, in 2011 the AJC joined the ADL in urging American Jews not to criticize Obama on Israel, and AJC Chairman Jack Rosen hosted a fundraiser for Obama‘s re-election at his New York home.)

“It will not be enough if those Congress members say they are opposing the agreement,” Wiesenfeld said, they must actively try and kill it. And to Schumer specifically, he demanded the senator round up votes against the bill, or “we will throw you the hell out.”

“Chuck, this is your moment,” Wiesenfeld said. “This is your time to make the decision.”

Alan Dershowitz, famed law professor and noted supporter of Democrats, said called the nuclear pact “a bad deal for Democrats … a bad deal for liberals. I am here opposing this deal as a liberal Democrat.”

Lauri Regan, one of the rally organizers, spoke of the Americans being held captive in Iran. She admonished the president for leaving them behind and forgetting their plight. “You couldn’t even pronounce their names properly,” she said.

Arguably the two best speakers of the night were Lt. Col. (Ret.) Allen West and Jerusalem Post editor Carolyn Glick.

West started with a pointed challenge. Next time Iran chants “death to America” we need to answer, “you first!” The former Florida congressman followed with an impassioned speech that at times seemed to bring tears to his eyes.

He asked the crowd, what is the message the United States is sending by negotiating with the “number one state sponsor of terrorism” and a country that is holding “four Americans hostage?”

“No different than the last time we had a weakling in the White House when we had 52

Americans being held hostage,” he answered, referring to the Iranian hostage crisis during the Carter administration.

Responding to President Obama’s claim that the only alternative to the P5+1 deal was war, West declared: “The United States of America is about victors, the United States of America is about champions, the United States of America does not surrender to a bunch of black-robed, crazed clerics that want to see us destroyed.”

He criticized the president for sending a message by signing a deal which will allow Iran to become a world military power, while cutting America’s military to dangerously low levels.

West received the biggest cheers with his closing: “I want President Obama to know one thing. You may say that you have done something that no one else has done. You know why no one else has done it? Because it’s a damn stupid thing you just did. If people are upset because of what I’m saying, I really don’t care.”

Caroline Glick’s speech was almost as fiery as

Allen West’s. She said that she came to the rally “from the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem. And one thing’s for sure, we came home after 2,000 years of yearning and we aren’t going anywhere. And to all the mullahs in Iran, all the ayatollahs and their friends in Hamas, in Hezbollah, we’re not going anywhere, Am Yisrael Chai!”

Glick gave the crowd two points to remind Senator Schumer about deal. The first of which was that the agreement “gives the mullahs $150 billion as a signing bonus, $150 billion. As my grandmother in Brooklyn would have said, that’s real money. That’s real money that you’re putting the hands of murderers, that you are putting in the hands of people who every day chant death to America and stomp on the flag of the United States!”

The second point was that even if Iran abides by the agreement, “in ten years’ time it can build nuclear weapons at will and we’re not even talking about cheating.”

“So Senator Schumer, Rep. Nadler, Rep. Engle,

what don’t you understand, what do you need to study, what isn’t clear here? Is there a question of what you must do if you wish to raise your hand in public and say, I am a man of honor?

“No question. No details! Look at the big picture! You know what to do, unless you have no honor and no shame!”

Glick gave the crowd its marching orders: “Tell your lawmakers, tell your friends, tell the President of the United States to kill this deal.

To preserve life, to preserve liberty, to preserve freedom, this deal must be killed.”

The rally ended at 8:30 after the NYPD gave the organizers and extra hour over their permit as many of the speakers ran over their allotted time. During the closing rush, the final three speakers were called up at once to deliver a trimmed down message.

The giant crowd was excited by the speakers to do what Frank Gaffney, founder of the Center For Security Policy, told them to do: “Urge Congress to kill this deal before it kills us.”

ver the next few weeks, this column will be devoted to a tribute to the legacy of one of Judaism’s towering spiritual leaders. Based upon the literary work of Rabbi Bezalel Naor, with supporting essay contributions by several leading spiritual leaders in our community, we will come to better know this spiritual giant in all his intellectual manifestations.

We begin this series with a biography of Rabbi Naor, a prolific writer, inspiring teacher and interpreter of Jewish thought. In addition to his many original works in English and Hebrew, Rabbi Naor has produced numerous scholarly works dealing with such rabbinic classics such as the Ravad’s commentary and notes on the Rambam’s Mishne Torah, and the Vilna Gaon’s commentary on Sifra Di’ Tseni’uta.

Rabbi Naor received his smicha from Rav Yaakov Yitzchak Ruderman, zt”l, the late rosh hayeshiva of Ner Yisrael in Baltimore.

He later studied with Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook,

zt”l, in Jerusalem. In additionm Rabbi Naor studied Jewish philosophy at Yeshiva University’s Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and served as an instructor in Jewish Thought at RIETS. In Israel, he served as a rosh kollel at the Kollel Eshel Avraham in Kiryat Arba in Chevron.

Among his latest works are “The Limit of Intellectual Freedom: The Letters of Rav Kook.”It was these letters that first inspired Rabbi Naor to the religious thought of Rav Kook. This work deals extensively with Rabbi Naor’s interpretation of the Rav’s teachings on the full gamut of his theological views.

Among one of the most interesting teachings is the one titled, “Eternal Halachot: A point of Contention Between Rabbis Elchanan Wasserman and Moshe Soloveitchik.”

This brief essay deals with a recollection that Rav Aharon Soloveichik, zt”l, had of a visit in 1925 by Rav Wasserman to his father Rav

Moshe Soloveitchik, and of their heated discussions that I leave for you to decipher.

This essay will give you a clear understanding of the spiritual milieu that Rav Kook lived in. Other essays, most of an historical bent, make for fascinating reading for those who wish to gain an inside track to what might have either influenced Rav Kook, or what made him a leader for Jewry till this very day.

The intellectual insights into the inner workings of Rav Kook’s thinking, especially when contrasted with those of of his contemporaries, will surely give you a deeper appreciation of Rav Kook’s legacy, as well as a better understanding of the true and rather cruel and primitive nature of some of his adversaries.

According to Rabbi Naor, Rav Kook’s Unique approach to the Jewish people flowed from the love of his heart that was reflected in his intellectual prowess that reflected a

G-d consciousness that endeared his to all comers.

“Very few thinkers have plumbed the depths of the individual psyche and encompassed the totality of existence, and what is between, as did Rav Kook,” wrote Rabbi Naor.

“His often prophetic words speak today to an ever widening audience seeking spiritual guidance in turbulent times.”

When we consider all that has transpired in these last 80 years since Rav Kook’s passing, we can only regard his teachings as further witness to his perceptive intellectual nature as an interpreter par excellence of our faith’s commitment to justice and compassion, as well as toleration and understanding to variant points of view. This legacy will be further explored in the weeks to come.

With the sad observances of the Nine Days now behind us I leave you with the following brief optimistic teaching by Michal Horowitz: “Rav Kook teaches us that both constant watchfulness for the arrival of the Messiah, as well as a rapid response to world events, are included in the obligation of ‘waiting in hope for the Messianic Redemption’.”

There is much to consider about this terse statement for us to ponder over in these most turbulent of times.

Should pulpit rabbis publicly discuss the Iran deal?

By Sean Savage, JNS.org As Congress debates whether or not to support the Iran nuclear deal, the same discussion is taking place in Jewish communities around the country, where many will inevitably look to their congregational rabbis for guidance on how they should view an agreement that many are criticizing for endangering the security of their brethren in Israel.

But pulpit rabbis are not members of Congress, and synagogues are not political advocacy organizations. So how and when is it appropriate for them to comment publicly on the Iran issue? JNS.org spoke with rabbis across the denominational spectrum to get a sense of

what they consider to be the appropriate balance to strike.

Rabbi Barry Gelman, the leader of United Orthodox Synagogues of Houston (UOS), said it is important that rabbis comment on the Iran deal “in terms of our role as spiritual leaders.” But he said rabbis should be careful when considering wading into sensitive political debates such as this one.

“Rabbis should not shy away from taking unpopular positions, but in a case like this, where experts disagree, rabbis should proceed with caution. Otherwise, our ability to inspire and be viewed as authorities on areas where we do claim expertise can be damaged,” Gelman told JNS.org.

irst I worried I would not be able to hear, but the sound turned out to be loud enough to be heard for blocks. I got there early and it was painfully loud up front within and behind the VIP area. But for a photographer, it’s all about vision and perspective — how I would see and what would I want my photos to say?

With a dozen cameramen planted pointblank from the podium, and countless press, pro and LPP (less than professional photographers) all around, I decided to keep my camera under wraps and unfocused, choosing instead to focus myself on the moment.

Some speakers were incredible, others very good. All were speaking to the choir. I found myself wondering about those not at the rally. How many of the city’s eight million should be concerned. Adding unlimited wealth to the immeasurably hateful people who lead Iran seems like something everyone in this country should fear.

Yet earlier as I cancelled my appointments

and prepared to leave for the rally, I wondered if our community might fail to measure up to the cause. Local Five Towns venders and eateries planned to remain open; no one I spoke with that day, planned to go to the rally. True it was organized quickly, but I saw full page ads, received emails, and was told by others about it. Later, an organizer told me at the rally that much was spent on outreach.

Many have security systems in their homes and businesses. We are alerted by phone calls, text messages, and email. expecting the police to come immediately. More than a few minutes is a slow response. The Iran treaty does not insist on or require immediacy. The most sensitive radiation sensors are not a substitute for boots on the ground investigating on a whim or wherefore.

The day after the rally, people were telling me that they had to work. Some things are important. Some things are more important. As I write this on Tish B’Av, I worry what really will be important ten years after the treaty is passed. Hopefully it will just be another workday, no special buses, no emergencies, and no reason to rally for anyone.

At the same time, the Iran deal has significant ramifications for Israelis and Jews beyond the political fallout in America. Iran is one of the largest state sponsors of terrorism in the Middle East, supporting groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah—who have engaged in several wars with Israel during the past decade. As such, many Israelis fear that Iran will use the $150 billion of sanctions relief it secured in the deal to provide financial and military support to those terror groups.

“Rabbis should use the pulpit to sensitize their congregants to these realities, affirm our support for the State of Israel, and urge our government to be diligent in thwarting terrorists’ threats,” Gelman said.

“North American rabbis have to navigate carefully between defending Israel and their positions as Americans [in order to] take a stand on political issues,” said Rabbi Joshua Weinberg, president of the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA), an organization that works to enhance Reform Judaism’s connection to Israel.

The Iran deal is “probably one of the most divisive issues in the Jewish community” right now, said Weinberg, explaining that if a rabbi’s personal views on the Obama administration’s Iran deal clash with those of his or her congregation at large, there is a fine line regarding what the rabbi can say about the issue in public.

Rabbi Daniel Berman, a Conservative rabbi at Temple Reyim in Newton, Mass., believes that addressing difficult topics like the Iran deal depends on factors such as the “particular community’s interests and level of engagement with political or policy questions, and the comfort level and strength of the rabbi in offering sermons that touch these issues.”

ARZA’s Weinberg also feels rabbis have a role in guiding their congregations on the topic of Israel. He called rabbis “go-to” sources on the Jewish state who should be “well-read on the issues” affecting it.

“I don’t buy the excuse that they’re not nuclear scientists and have nothing to say,” Weinberg said of pulpit rabbis.

“Rabbis are representatives of the Jewish community,” and “part of our opinion on the deal has to take into consideration the effect on Israel,” he added.

For many Jews, the Iran deal debate is part of the ongoing challenge of determining how local communities should discuss Israel.

Temple Reyim’s Berman pointed to last summer’s Israel-Hamas war in Gaza as a recent example of an important event for rabbis and Jewish leaders to engage with.

“I wrote a piece in our newsletter and led two community conversations that we had in our sanctuary to allow people to address and respond to the conflict,” Berman said.

The Gaza conflict presented stark challenges to global Jewry, with anti-Semitic attacks inspired by criticism of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge sharply rising around the world, forcing many Jews to grapple with both political and physical challenges. Simultaneously, some members of the Jewish community were also critical of Israel’s war effort.

Due to this dichotomy, finding constructive and creative ways to engage the Jewish community on the tough challenges Israel faces—from Hamas to the Iran deal—is becoming an increasingly vital component of Jewish communal life. Berman said that having conversations about the Gaza war, and writing about current events in the synagogue newsletter, “was helpful in strengthening our community and helping members better understand the various issues that were at stake.”

Weinberg believes that rabbis should feel free to express their opinions, but that they must do so “carefully,” especially when commenting on topics such as Israel and the Iran deal.

“A rabbi’s job is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,” he said, adding that rabbis have a “teaching role” and “should offer a broad spectrum of views and insert their own views.”

The Jewish community will likely continue to grapple with the Iran deal for the foreseeable future. Against that backdrop, UOS’s Gelman said rabbis “should remind their congregants to educate themselves on the details of the agreement and make their voices heard to their elected officials.”

“This is not merely a political right, but a religious duty stemming from our universal obligations to the society in which we live,” he said.

How NY will give $250M to schools Agudath Israel The New York State Education Department has announced its plans for the disbursement of the $250 million in mandated services and Comprehensive Attendance Program (CAP) reimbursement the legislature appropriated at the close of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s session in June.

At a meeting of the New York State Commissioner of Educationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nonpublic School Advisory Council, State Education Department ofďŹ cials announced that the $250 million would be paid out over a two-year period, with $125 million disbursed in each of the two years. These payments are set to begin in September.

Deborah Zachai, Director of Education for Agudath Israel of America, who was one of the meeting participants, explained that these monies have been owed to nonpublic schools for more than a decade. Due to budget shortfalls and the use of a ďŹ&#x201A;awed formula to calculate the actual reimbursement due to nonpublic schools, the debt accumulated and became substantial over a more than ten year period.
