By Diana Calapietro Eight Jewish institutions in central and southern Nassau County will receive nearly $575,000 through the Department of Homeland Security’s NonproďŹ t Security Grant Program, a spokesman for Rep. Kathleen Rice said on Monday.

Congregation Aish Kodesh in Woodmere is a second time recipient of a $75,000 grant, Rice Communications Director Coleman Lamb said.

Other area institutions to receive $75,000 are Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Young Israel of Oceanside, Merrick Jewish Centre, the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach and the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway.

Yeshiva of South Shore in Hewlett will get $73,673, and Hebrew Academy of Nassau

County $50,000. “The reality is that we live in dangerous times and the grant will go a long way towards making our synagogue safer,� said Aish Kodesh Rabbi Moshe Weinberger. “We deeply appreciate Congresswoman Rice’s help in our having obtained the security grant for the sake of our synagogue,� said Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum of Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst.

Across the New York metropolitan area, 66 Jewish organizations and several churches have been awarded a total of $5.1 million to improve their security.

Rice, a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said that “preventing and preparing for acts of terrorism and other emergency situations is always a collaborative effort, and

one of the most effective things we can do at the federal level is help vulnerable or high-risk institutions harden their facilities and enhance their emergency response capabilities.�

Since terrorists have “previously targeted schools and congregations for attacks,� this funding is critical in making sure that such high-risk venues “are safe and protected from terrorist attacks,� Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said. “New York is the number one terror target in the world,� Gillibrand added, so “we must continue to be vigilant.�

UJA-Federation and other Jewish groups worked with legislators to obtain the funds, which will be used for such things as automatically locking doors, hardened windows, and other security infrastructure.

The Anti-Defamation League said this week that it is “troubled” over fliers circulated on Long Island and in update New York that accuse Jews of controlling money in the U.S. “Wake up white America! Jews control the money in America. Period. End of Story,” stated one of the flyers, which were attributed to the Ku Klux Klan.

“Zionist Jews own and run the Federal Reserve Bank,” a flyer said. “Join us to stop Zionist control over your government.”

The fliers also insulted African Americans and members of the LGBTQ community.

“In spite of the decline of the KKK groups across the country, the classic Klan hateful rhetoric found [on these flyers] serves as a stark reminder that they still actively seek to disseminate their vile messages,” said ADL New York Regional Director Evan R. Bernstein.

There are currently 30 active Klan groups in the U.S. with about 3,000 Klan members, according to figures by ADL’s Center on Extremism.

Hatred peeves Canada The Canadian government withdrew its logo from the World Social Forum’s event list of partners following complaints by members of parliament that the program included anti-Semitic content, Canada’s National Post reported.

Two Liberal MPs said they saw a “blatantly anti-Semitic cartoon” on the event’s website, which showed a stereotypical Jewish man wearing a hat with a Star of David.

The cartoon, posted on a page for a forum session about Islamic terrorists being “in the service of world Zionism-capitalism,” was subsequently removed from the website, on Aug. 5, and the session was cancelled.

“The Prime Minister, the Government of Canada, and the Canadian Parliament have been very clear that we oppose the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and that anti-Semitism is never acceptable,” the Canadian MPs, Anthony Housefather and Michael Levitt, said in a joint statement.

The annual World Social Forum, which began on Tuesday in Montreal, is a gathering of an expected 10,000 activists from around the world seeking to find “concrete alternatives to the neoliberal economic model and to policies based on the exploitation of human beings and nature,” the forum’s website states. The forum also says it is committed to censoring pro-Israel perspectives.

“We have already taken a stand to exclude all people, organizations or activities that promote any kind of oppression, supporting Palestinians, and all the people struggling for their emancipation and freedom,” the website states.

An accompanying document advises on the boycott of academics, artists and products it links to “Israeli apartheid.”

Prominent anti-Israel activists such as Noam Chomsky and actor Danny Glover have attended and supported the World Social Forum in the past.

In an effort to save a beloved family business from rising rents and crippling state bureaucracy, Far Rockaway Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and Nassau County Legislator Howard Kopel are asking the state Department of Transportation to renegotiate steep use and occupancy fees applied to the Five Towns Mini-Golf and Batting Range on Rockaway Turnpike in Lawrence.

Goldfeder, who said that Marty Rosenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 38-year-old business â&#x20AC;&#x153;has provided wholesome fun and entertainment to thousands of families in our community, including my own,â&#x20AC;? asked the DOT â&#x20AC;&#x153;to step up to the plate and ensure the Rosen family remains a part of our community for years to come.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Local businesses like these are the backbone of our economy and we must ensure that they continue to grow and thrive,â&#x20AC;? Goldfeder said at a press conference with Kopel and Rosen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a family-owned business that provides a unique service to the area,â&#x20AC;? In their bi-partisan bid, Democrat Goldfeder and Republican Kopel called on DOT to renegotiate a 150 percent increase in use and occupancy fees that took effect in April.

They warned state ofďŹ cials that the high fees could force the longstanding business to fail, leading to more blight along the commercial district on Rockaway Turnpike.

They pointed to an adjacent former car dealership also in state DOT hands which, for the better part of the last decade, has stood abandoned and covered in tall weeds.

I

t was a glorious Shabbat morning, but truth be told, if I had been left to my own devices, I might have slept all day. But there at the edge of my bed was Benji with his older sister Abigail, who could not have been more than six, impatiently waiting for me to wake up so I could pad into the kitchen and reach the high cupboard where their mother kept the Shabbos treats. Even then, there was no stopping Benji when he was on a mission.

Many Shabbatot I’d arrive at the Hillman doorstep, often unannounced from the army, with a pile of dirty laundry and a pair of dusty boots, and I always got Benji’s trademark shy smile when I walked in the door.

Most of all I remember his storybook wedding, the handsome young Israeli officer in slacks and a white shirt, dancing with his beautiful bride. They had been going out for so long, many of his friends could not imagine Benji without Ayala; the joy etched into her smile was infectious.

We didn’t know it then but the entire family had a chance not just to see Benji one last time, but to see him at the highest moment of his life. At a wedding, all the different pieces of a person’s life come together — family and friends, army buddies and high school friends, uncles and aunts who bounced him on their knees, and cousins who knew his dreams from their earliest moments. It was a storybook wedding; such a fine picture they cut. enji grabbed the mike began to sing, serenading his bride to the amusement of the hundreds of guests gathered around. That image of him, with his shy smile and twinkling eyes, in the middle of the dance floor as everyone, particularly Ayala, his bride, simply reveled in the moment, stayed with me long after the wedding was over.

And then, less than a month later, we got together with the entire family all over again, only this time there was no dancing and smiles, no twinkling eyes and tinkling glasses. Ayala was not smiling in a magnificent white wedding dress, she was broken, in black, Israel’s latest young widow.

I have lost many friends to military funerals over the years, some of them my closest comrades, but it had never been family.

There is something about losing a cousin that is entirely different, because it’s not just a fallen soldier — it’s parents and siblings, uncles and aunts, cousins and grandparents and everyone in the entire family. It’s every family get-together that we will ever have, every wedding and Bar Mitzvah, funeral and bris, and even every family barbeque and birthday. None of them will be the same.

And that is one family, and one boy who became man who is now legend. Multiply that by 20,000 families, who all share that terrible price that seems too great to bear. o how do you go on? How do you keep smiling? On the one hand, the question defies response, and yet, more than anything, Benji represented to me the way our best and brightest have always responded: A shy smile, a determined look, a

hug across the shoulders, and a load that has just gotten heavier.

Little Benji became a company commander in one of the elite commando units of the Israeli army, but he didn’t talk much about it; he was not a talker, he was a doer.

Ten years ago as his family was just getting up from the shiva, we read the portion of Devarim, so named for the first verse: “Eleh ha’devarim asher diber Moshe el kol Yisrael be’ever hayarden bamidbar.” (“These are the words Moshe spoke to the entire people of Israel on the other side of the Jordan River, in the desert.”)

Sometimes, you have to find the words, for that part of life for which there are no words. n interesting idea that stems from a particular question in the parsha: “Va’Omar aleichem, ba’et ha’hi’ leimor: lo’ uchal le’vadi se’et etchem.” (And I said to you at that time, saying, ‘I cannot carry you alone’.”) (1:9) Leimor (saying) is an interesting word which at first glance seems superfluous.

For example, in its most common usage, “Va’yedaber Hashem el Moshe leimor” (“And G-d spoke to Moshe saying”), many commentaries understand it to mean that G-d was not just speaking to Moshe, he was speaking to Moshe in order that Moshe pass on the message on to the rest of the Jewish people. So the word leimor seems to be all about conveying the message and passing on an idea.

But in this instance (1:9), Moshe is already speaking to the Jewish people, so to whom were they meant to convey it? Furthermore, why was this particular message so important to pass on? Why was it important for Moshe, standing on the banks of the Jordan River, to let the generation of Jews about to enter the land that their parents had been a burden many years ago?

Rashi suggests that the word leimor here is Moshe’s attempt to express the fact that these words are not coming from him as a complaint, but rather from G-d Himself.

What was it that made the Jewish people such a burden?

The commentaries are clear on this, including Rashi, who suggests that the burden is a reference to the Jews who would stand before Moshe from morning till evening asking him to act as a judge. This was too heavy a load for one man, so eventually a system of judges was established and people would bring their grievances to local and eventually regional and even tribal judges, before only those rarest cases that were too difficult for anyone else could be reviewed by Moshe himself.

But this does not really resolve our difficulty, as Rashi points out. One wonders why Moshe, who was G-d’s vehicle for splitting the Sea and bringing the ten (or most of the ten) plagues on Egypt, could not easily have been G-d’s vehicle for judgment of the entire people. av Moshe Feinstein, in his Darash Moshe, writes that perhaps it was not that Moshe could not shoulder this burden, but rather, it was important that one man should not be responsible for such a burden on his own, precisely because this is a burden that needs to be shared. It was not that Moshe was unable to take on this challenge alone, it was that G-d did not want him to. But then we are left to struggle with the language that Moshe uses: “I cannot carry you alone,” which seems to imply that Moshe

could not shoulder this burden alone.

Rav Moshe suggests that “I cannot” need not refer to a physical inability to complete a task, but rather to a spiritual or psychological inability.

Once Moshe knew it was not Hashem’s will for him to do this, he was simply incapable of doing it, end of discussion. And perhaps the reason Hashem did not want Moshe fulfilling this task alone was not because he couldn’t but rather because other people should.

It is a measure of a person’s character to see what they are simply unable to do.

At Benji’s funeral one of the many speakers was his brigade commander, who had become quite fond of this young company commander whom he described as a rising star, clearly headed for battalion command and endless possibilities. n the evening Benji fell in combat in Lebanon, the brigade commander walked into the command center and heard Benji’s deputy over the radio, leading the men, and directing the operation, at which point he knew something was wrong, because in his words, Benji was simply unable to be in such a situation and not lead his men into battle. And not out of pride or foolhardiness, but simply because he knew that in such moments it was his job and that he simply had to do it.

Over 3,000 years ago, Moshe was teaching his people a lesson: we need to all share in the challenges that lie ahead: in the day to day, as well as in those trying times when

Benji Hillman, of blessed memory, died leading his men into battle and fell as he lived with actions that speak far louder than words ever could. And he leaves behind him a challenge and a legacy: few are those in this world who merit to live up to such a bold and shining example of what Jewish leadership is all about, carrying the Jewish people and the State of Israel on their shoulders.

This Shabbat we enter into the most intense period of mourning for our Temples that were destroyed thousands of years ago, and we remember all the living temples we lost since then. It remains to us to find the strength, each in our own way, of ensuring that, at the least, the sacrifices he and all the young men and women like him have made, are not in vain.

May the love we will carry for Benji forever be a small source of comfort to his family and to all the families, in their darkest moments.

‘Savage’ is too kind a word STEPHEN M. FLATOW

A

fter a Palestinian civil engineering student was revealed on Aug. 2 to be the terrorist arrested for plotting a largescale attack on Jerusalem’s light rail in revenge for Jews visiting the Temple Mount, everyone’s natural reaction to the terrorist’s capture was to breathe a sigh of relief, feel a sense of gratitude to the quick-thinking security guards who caught him, and turn the page.

But before turning our attention away from this latest near-miss, let’s pondering a few lessons: Lesson #1: It’s not the “occupation.”

Would-be bomber Ali Abu Hasan is a resident of the town of Beit Ula, six miles northwest of Hebron. Like 99 percent of Palestinians, he lives under the rule of the Palestinian Authority (PA), not Israel. Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin withdrew Israel’s forces from Beit Ula way back in 1995. This means that Hasan has lived literally his entire life under Palestinian, not Israeli, occupation.

Lesson #2: It’s not about borders or settlements, either.

Hasan said his intention was “revenge against tourists and Jews who visit the Temple Mount.” He wasn’t demanding a Palestinian state, or an Israeli return to the pre-1967 borders, or an end to Israeli construction beyond the ‘Green Line.’ He told the Israeli police that his beef is the fact that a tiny number of “tourists and Jews” occasionally visit Judaism’s holiest site, the Temple Mount, where the AlAqsa Mosque is located.

Keep in mind that non-Muslims who visit the Temple Mount are prohibited by the police from praying there. And unlike the Muslims on the Temple Mount, the non-Muslim visitors do not throw rocks and firebombs at the po-

lice, or engage in other types of dangerous or unruly behavior. They don’t make noise. They don’t bother anybody. All they do is briefly walk around the area and look at it. The mere presence of non-Muslims in the vicinity inflames Ali Abu Hasan and his ilk.

Lesson #3: Poverty does not cause terrorism.

State Department wonks, New York Times reporters and Peace Now activists are always telling us that Palestinians resort to violence because they are unemployed, impoverished and feeling “hopeless.” Gentlemen, meet Ali Abu Hasan. He’s not some high school dropout, hanging out on street corners and looking for mischief. He’s a student in industrial engineering at Hebron University. Far from being “hopeless,” he was on a path to professional achievement and financial independence.

Poverty did not turn Hasan into a terrorist.

Which means that giving the Palestinians billions of dollars – the U.S. has given them more than $10-billion since 1994 ¬–¬ will not deter them from becoming terrorists.

Lesson #4: Incitement matters.

We know from Palestinian Media Watch that the Palestinian Authority-controlled newspapers, radio and television constantly seek to rouse the public with hateful, libelous accusations that “the Jews” are trying to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. The Jerusalem Post reported last September 16 that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas himself announced: “Al-Aqsa is ours and so is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. They have no right to desecrate them with their filthy feet. We won’t allow them to do so…”

Upside of Jewish prof’s Zionism slam RAFAEL MEDOFF

A

merican Jewish historian Hasia Diner is facing widespread criticism over her public renunciation of Israel and Zionism.

I say: Thanks, Hasia, for your honesty.

Diner is the Paul S. and Sylvia Steinberg professor of American Jewish history at New York University and director of NYU’s Goldstein-Goren Center for American Jewish History. In an Aug. 1 op-ed in Haaretz, she described how she was raised in the Labor Zionist youth movement Habonim, but by 2010 no longer considered herself a Zionist. She wrote that she now “abhors” visiting Israel, “will not buy” Israeli-made products, and feels “a sense of repulsion” when entering a synagogue that publicly affirms its support of Israel. Zionism itself is a “naive delusion,” she asserted.

If Diner acts on her principles, the consequences will not be insignificant. For example, she will no longer be able to accept speaking engagements at the vast majority of synagogues in the United States, since these are vocally pro-Israel.

Ironically, among the synagogues she would not visit is Chicago’s North Suburban Synagogue Beth El (its mission statement declares: “We are committed to supporting Isra-

el”), where there is a children’s school named after the same Paul S. and Sylva Steinberg who underwrite Diner’s own position at NYU. I do not know exactly how the Steinbergs feel about Israel, although their decision to sponsor a school that is part of a pro-Israel synagogue may provide some indication. But there’s no doubt how the sponsors of Diner’s Goldstein-Goren Center feel about Israel: the Cukier, Goldstein-Goren Foundation was established by three European Jews whose lives were saved by the very same Zionism that Hasia Diner abhors, and who made their fortune — the fortune that supports that center at NYU — in the State of Israel that Prof.

Diner now boycotts.

Mordechai (Max) Cukier and his family — including his son in law Avram “Dolphi” Goldstein and Dolphi’s young son Alex — fled from Romania in the midst of the raging Holocaust. Those were the years when, as Chaim Weizmann famously remarked, the world was “divided into places where Jews cannot live and places where they cannot enter.”

One of the very few places where they could go was Eretz Yisrael, which was known at the time as British Mandatory Palestine.

Of course, the 1939 British White Paper severely limited Jewish immigration. But for those who qualified for British visas — or who were smuggled into the country by Zionist activists — their haven was made possible by the Zionist movement. During the previous three decades, Zionist pioneers drained swamps and built cities, developing

a thriving Jewish community that grew from barely 50,000 to more than 500,000 people. ionism was no “naive delusion” for the Cukier, Goldstein-Goren family.

It sheltered them from the Nazis, and provided a community where they could rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Max and Dolphi built an enormously successful international textile business based in Israel. They also established a charitable foundation that became a significant source of support for Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Beersheba, and whose current supported projects are primarily located in Israel, according to its website. Dolphi’s son Alex has served as president of the foundation and president of the American Associates of BenGurion University. I wonder how Diner felt about attending the BGU ceremony last year at which he was awarded an honorary degree.

Who will be most affected by Diner’s confession of her true feelings about Israel? Parents of Jewish college students, and donors to the Goldstein Goren Center at NYU. The spread of anti-Israel boycott activity on campuses has become a major source of anxiety within the American Jewish community, especially among parents of college students. Before parents plunk down $48,000 each year for tuition to NYU, they have a right to know if the professors who will be teaching their sons and daughters are proIsrael, anti-Israel or somewhere in between.

JUDY JOSZEF WHO’S IN THE KITCHEN

T

his past Shabbat, my husband Jerry and I were invited to shalosh seudos at our friends, Howie and Meira Lasky, along with the Goldsmiths, Hacks and Markowitzs.

Out of the ten at the table, six had parents born overseas, or as they are referred to by most, “greenas.”

Although, my mom was born in Romania, she came to America in the 1930s as a young girl and by the time she was 14 she spoke perfect English without an accent, so I never considered her a “greena,” and my dad was born in New York. None of my grandparents were in the Holocaust, all four of them arriving before the war. That being said, at times, I think of myself as a Holocaust survivor’s child. You see, having been married to Jerry for eight years and knowing him for 12, I actually feel as though I am.

Those of you who know Jerry, understand.

Those of you who don’t, let’s just say he has at least 40 to 50 books about the Holocaust and hundreds of articles, testimonies, etc. He’s seen every Holocaust movie at least twice and has almost every book written about anti-Semitism.

At the table, the subject turned to our parents, and Jerry spoke of his parents’ mispronunciation of certain words. One by one, those with parents not American-born, regaled us with classics. Among them: Tenor, for tenant (I actually thought my mother-in-law had operatic tenors living up-

stairs, when I first met her), Top and Center Bridge for Tappan Zee Bridge, Fridgidaire for refrigerator, tangerines for dungarees, drucks for drugs — as in Jerry’s mom saying, “You’re wearing a turtleneck Friday night to go to the coed social after dinner? Before you know it, you’ll be on drucks!” — blood clock instead of blood clot.

And then there were the customized sayings — go with the flood instead of the flow, fire camp instead of camp fire, playing broken phone instead of phone tag, chungum instead of chewing gum, silver foil instead aluminum foil, absorbing instead of observing, George instead of a judge, and my personal favorite: nose drill instead of nostrils. eedless to say there was an abundance of laughter, even after I warned everyone that it could turn into a column. I was midway writing it when Jerry called to tell me that he had a great idea for my column this week. He said I had to use his idea. He was so excited, he was speaking a mile minute or about five times slower than I do. For those who have heard me speak, you get the idea.

He explained that while walking from Penn Station to his office, he noticed men of all ages with long shorts, black socks and white regular Keds. He also noticed men wearing suits that looked inches too short and way too tight, revealing socks that would rival any clown in the tziurkis (as his mom called circus).

It reminded him of his first year in Camp Raleigh when all he had were long shorts, black dress socks (or stockings as his mom called them) and his white Keds, which his mom lovingly bleached and laundered before camp. How he yearned for the short shorts, white athletic socks and high top Chuck Taylor sneakers the other kids were wearing (except

for the kid who slept near him with severe allergies, who brought along his butterfly net, because he couldn’t play sports due to his asthma).

When he was young, Jerry’s mom and other European moms would buy their kids suits that were two sizes too big, so that they could “grow” into them. At the beginning of the school year it was swimming in them, at the end of year the pants were tight and short.

Jerry couldn’t get over the irony of it. Jerry was in style all those years ago, he was just ahead of his time. Not really, but for Jerry it was passable —now, everyone is dressing like greenas right off the boat from Europe. The long shorts black socks — all they’re missing are those “cab” caps and clown socks.

When you read this article, I would appreciate it if you’d George (judge) it strangely, as Jerry’s mom would say.

Ingredients: 3 cups cake flour 2 1/8 tsp baking powder 3/4 tsp baking soda 1 1/2 cups sugar 3/4 cup butter, room temperature 1/4 cup vegetable oil 3 extra large eggs 1 1/4 tsps vanilla extract 1 1/4 cups sour cream Streusel filling ingredients: 1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 4 tablespoons brown sugar 1 cup chopped, toasted pecans Glaze ingredients: 3 tbsp milk 1-1/8 cup confectioner sugar1/3 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Combine all glaze ingredients in a bowl and whisk until smooth Preheat oven to 350F. Spray Pam into 10inch tube pan Mix flour, baking powder and baking soda In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in vegetable oil and eggs, adding one in at a time. Mix in vanilla extract. Add the flour mixture and the sour cream,alternating between the two.

Be sure to end with an addition of the flour.

Do not overmix, just make sure all ingredients are incorporated.

For the Streusel, stir together the cinnamon, brown sugar and toasted pecans.

Add half of the cake batter to the prepared pan and spread it into an even layer. Top evenly with cinnamon mixture, then spread the rest of the cake batter on top.

Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool the cake completely in the pan. When cool, drizzle with cinnamon glaze.

On June 24 at 4:20 p.m. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; after almost three months of biopsies, a CT scan, a PET scan, blood tests, two surgeries a month apart, two periods of healing, serious side effects from anesthesia, about 30 Percocets, painful swallowing and eating, many doctorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; appointments, troubled nights and the prayers of hundreds of loved ones â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the surgeon told me the results of the ďŹ nal pathology report: My cancer is gone. I am cancer-free.

Now begins a new chapter: ďŹ ve years of at least quarterly examinations and tests to watch for reoccurrence.

On April 8 at 8:21 a.m., the doctor told me I had cancer. After an April 1 biopsy of a lesion, he called me while I was in upstate Saratoga Springs, at a journalism conference.

I felt nauseous, worried, angry, depressed, confused, alone, anxious to take action, and impatient that the next steps would take days to arrange. I tried to summon faith. I searched my brain for a plan, though I knew that while I would be in charge, others, better at this, would make the real plan.

The sore throat Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d had for several weeks had turned out not to be strep, and it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t viral, either. It was a squamous cell carcinoma of my soft palate.

That call began a new, blessedly brief, painful, depressing, frightening, and now happily resolved chapter of my life.

ast week I received a profound teaching from the esteemed rabbi of the iconic Bialystoker Synagogue, Rabbi Zvi Romm, themed to the recent bigoted rant by a socalled Jewish historian, Dr. Hasia Diner. The rabbi’s teaching was as follows: “Although we have just begun the darkest week on the Jewish calendar — the period of the Nine Days — nonetheless, there is some cause for celebration this Shabbos.

“This Shabbos is ‘catch-up Shabbos.’ Since Pesach, Israel and the diaspora have been reading different Torah readings each Shabbos. This state of affairs came about because the diaspora’s last day of Pesach was observed

as a regular Shabbos in Israel, meaning that Israel has been one parsha ahead of the diaspora since then.

“This Shabbos we are reconciled. Israel reads parshas Mas’ei, and the diaspora reads the double parsha of Matos-Mas’ei … and we are all back on the same page once again. A small celebration, but a celebration nonetheless.

“In the broader Jewish community, voices were raised this past week expressing a desire to sever the relationship between Israel and diaspora Jewry. ‘I feel a sense of repulsion,’ one very prominent author [Hasia Diner] wrote, ‘when I enter a synagogue in front of which the congregation has planted a sign reading ‘We stand with Israel.’

“This ‘catch-up Shabbos’ is a rejection of such views. It should serve to remind us of the need to ensure ultimately that Israel and the diaspora are on the same page, two communities which share an unbreakable bond with one another. As long as diaspora communities continue to exist, an im-

portant role which we play is to support Israel — both its government as well as its people.”

Here is an excerpt from the Aug. 1 Haaretz article by Diner and Marjorie N. Feld, titled, “We’re American Jewish Historians, This Is Why We’ve Left Zionism Behind: “When I was asked to run as a delegate on the progressive Hatikva platform to the 2010 World Zionist Congress, I encountered my personal rubicon, the line I could not cross. I was required to sign ‘The Jerusalem Program.’ This statement of principles asked me to affirm that I believed in ‘the centrality of the State of Israel and Jerusalem as capital’ for the Jewish people. It encouraged ‘aliyah to Israel,’ that is, the classic negation of the diaspora and as such the ending of Jewish life outside a homeland in Israel. [It] also asked me to declare that I wanted to see the ‘strengthening of Israel as a Jewish, Zionist and democratic state.’

“As to democratic, I had no problem, but the singular insistence on Israel as a Jewish and

Zionist state made me realize that, at least in light of this document, I could not call myself a Zionist, any longer. Does Jewish constitute a race or ethnicity? Does a Jewish state mean a racial state?”

As far as I am concerned, the following commentaries, taken from the weekday Jewish liturgy, should place the above in its proper spiritual perspective and thus lend greater credence to Rabbi Romm’s sentiments. t the center of the daily Amida service there is the following blessing whose translation and commentary comes from a recently issued volume titled, “Siddur Lev Shalem,” edited by Rabbi Edward Feld: “The End of Wickedness: May the hopes of those who would defame us be dashed, may all wickedness be instantly frustrated, and may all Your enemies be quickly cut off. Root out, subdue, break, and humble the arrogant, speedily, in our day.”

Selecting the leaders that we need and deserve RABBI AVI BILLET PARSHA OF THE WEEK

A

fter describing the difficulty he had in judging the people by himself, Moshe describes how he suggested to the people that they bring forth their most honorable leaders to serve as captains and judges over smaller population groups.

Leaving out the role his father-in-law had in these developments (a topic of a much longer discussion), Moshe says, “You answered me, ‘Yours is a good suggestion.’ I selected of tribal leaders, wise and well known men, and I appointed them your leaders — captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, captains of tens, and police for your tribes.” (1:14-15) In two separate comments, Netziv (Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin) makes the bold claim that Moshe utilized an unnecessary word to make his point, and each unnecessary word requires an explanation.

First, Moshe said “You answered me.”

The word “me” is unnecessary, as Moshe is the one talking and he is describing the response the people had to what he said. Netziv explains that the previous word, which has been translated as “you answered,” can also be read to mean “you caused to suffer.” Had

the word only meant “you answered,” then the word “me” would have been extra. But since it could also mean, “You caused to suffer” the word “me” is necessary because the people “caused me [Moshe] to suffer” by the way they treated him.

The second example of an extra word is when Moshe says, “I appointed them your leaders.” The word “them” is extra. In the verse, the Hebrew word for “them” is “otam.” Netziv asks if it is plausible that Moshe “selected of tribal leaders, wise and well known men, and I appointed them your leaders” because, if they were already leaders, how was he appointing them as leaders. Netziv then explains that the word otam can also be read as itam were one to merely change the vowelization.

“Itam” means “with them,” and the verse would now mean, “I selected of tribal leaders, wise and well known men, and I appointed your leaders with them!”

It is such a fascinating idea to consider that if an unnecessary word is only revoweled, it becomes more than necessary, but brings about a new teaching. We learn so much about the people, and we learn so much about Moshe.

I

f indeed the people made Moshe suffer over this choice, it shows a high level of disgruntlement. They wanted to have a say. They wanted to be involved. If I may borrow an old phrase (and create a new word), perhaps they were declaring “No leaderization without representation.”

And so, Moshe chose to accept input from representatives who were already leaders, saying, “Help me find the right people to serve in this capacity. You want leaders? I’ll give you leaders. But you have to choose them! This way, you can’t complain anymore, as they are your leaders – the ones your representatives chose along with me.”

We are living in a time when people often feel that leaders are unnecessary.

Maybe even some of the leaders don’t value their roles as leaders. But more often, people seem to feel that “I can do everything myself.”

I recently saw a video of a 1975 interview in which then-former Gov. Ronald Reagan was a guest on the Johnny Carson show and said, “If government would shut the doors and sneak away for three weeks, we’d never miss them.”

and business (I don’t think he was suggesting that police who deal with crime and law and order should go away). And maybe there is something to such a notion.

But there are also times when one wonders if the leaders we have are the leaders we are stuck with or if they are the ones we aptly deserve. Government is a sore subject for a lot of people these days, so let’s put our focus back in our community.

Those who feel they do not have a say have every right to have a say. Whether we are talking about a shul or a school or any Jewish institution with which we are involved, it behooves us to participate in a way that indicates our concern and care, but also in a way that is respectful.

Hopefully we merit to get the right kinds of leaders, but there is also the concern that, based on how we conduct ourselves, we get the leaders we deserve.

How many schools have an overhaul of administration every five years? How many shuls are looking for a new rabbi every three years?

How many institutions find themselves bedecked with scandal on account of mishandling of money, or some other unfortunate episode?

Leaders must properly represent, and the people must have the strength to pick those who fit them best. Hopefully, at the very least, we can thereby improve our community infrastructures and promote peace in all of our ranks.

Chazon: ‘Return to Me and I will return to you’ RABBI DAVID ETENGOFF

T

his Shabbat is known as “Shabbat Chazon,” based upon the opening words of our haftarah: “The vision (chazon) of Yeshayahu (Isaiah) the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, [and] Hezekiah, kings of Judah.”

(Yeshayahu 1:1)1 In keeping with the themes of the Three Weeks and Tisha b’Av, much of this haftarah consists of dire statements of prophecy that bespeak Hashem’s rejection of our behavior, and pronouncements of future disaster: Woe to a sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, evildoing seed, corrupt children.

They forsook the L-rd; they provoked the Holy One of Israel; they drew backwards.

Your land is desolate; your cities burnt with fire. Your land — in your presence, strangers devour it; and it is desolate as that turned over to strangers. And the daughter of Zion shall be left like a hut in a vineyard, like a lodge in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. … Of what use are your many sacrifices to Me? says the L-rd. I am sated with the burnt-offerings of rams and the fat of fattened cattle; and the blood of bulls and sheep and male goats I do not want.

When you come to appear before Me, who requested this of you, to trample My courts? … And when you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you, even when you pray at length, I do not hear. …

How has she [Jerusalem] become a harlot, a faithful city; full of justice, in which righteousness would lodge, but now [there are only] murderers. (Yeshayahu 1:4, 7-8, 1112, 15 and 21) Yet, in the midst of these ominous predictions, Yeshayahu’s words of potential reconcili-

ation burst forth as a beacon of hope: Wash, cleanse yourselves [O’ Jewish people], remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes, cease to do evil. Learn to do good, seek justice, strengthen the robbed, perform justice for the orphan, plead the case of the widow. Come now, let us debate, says the L-rd. If your sins prove to be like crimson, they will become white as snow; if they prove to be as red as crimson dye, they shall become as wool. …

And I will restore your judges as at first and your counselors as in the beginning; afterwards you shall be called City of Righteousness, Faithful City. Zion shall be redeemed through justice and her penitent [ones] through righteousness. (1:16-18, 26-27) Yeshayahu’s message thunders throughout the ages: All is not lost, there is always hope for the Jewish people — if we do teshuvah. According to Rashi, this is the meaning of the oblique phrase in our passage, “Come now, let us debate, says the L-rd,” which he explains as, “together,

you and I, and we will know who offended whom, and if you offended Me, I still give you hope to repent.”

Based upon the overall message of the haftarah, however, the clear connotation of Rashi’s explanation is that klal Yisrael affronted G-d through their failure to “seek justice, strengthen the robbed, perform justice for the orphan, [and] plead the case of the widow.” As such, how are we to understand the expression, “Come now, let us debate?” After all, there appears to be little to discuss when we were so demonstrably guilty.

The second Bobover Rebbe, HaRav Ben-Zion Halberstam zatzal, known to posterity as the Kedushat Tzion after the name of his commentary on the Torah and Festivals, suggests that there was, indeed, an outright dispute between Hashem and the Jewish people regarding the relationship between geulah (Redemption) and teshuvah: The Holy One blessed be He said that the Jewish people should undertake the See Chazon on page 16

According to many, this particular blessing is the 19th, and was added at a later date. Historically, this blessing was created to address those who worked against the Jewish community in Roman times. Since then, the blessing continued to be said against any enemy who would undermine Judaism and the Jewish people.â&#x20AC;?

As I re-read Dinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s screed I am further reinforced in the conviction that my daily recitation of this beracha has people such as Diner â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and the prohibition against mesira â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in mind, and that this is further reinforced by the commentaries cited above.

Numerous reactions followed the publication of Dinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commentary. Among them was this reply in Haaretz by Brandeis Professor of Jewish History Jonathan Sarna: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is new, thanks to the campaign of Bernie Sanders, is the pride that Jewish leftists now take in publically dissociating from support of Israel. Their sense, perhaps based on the strength of that movement, is that they â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;are

11, 2001, has strengthened calls for stricter gun control laws. Every once in a while, some State Department official, under questioning from journalists, will mumble a vague expression of “concern” about the PA’s incitement. But it’s obvious that the Obama administration will never take any serious steps to pressure the PA. The American Jewish community needs to work with Congress to bring about concrete steps in this regard.

Lesson #5: Let’s not be afraid to tell the truth about the brutality of Palestinian terrorists.

In polite company, one is not supposed to use words like “savage” or “animal” when characterizing Palestinian terrorists. It’s considered dehumanizing. But consider the Jerusalem police spokesman’s description of the explosive device that Hasan made: three pipe bombs, fused together, with nails and screws glued on, all covered in rat poison.

Why did Hasan glue nails and screws to the bomb? So that people who were not hit by the explosion itself, would be hit by the nails and screws, which would shoot out from the explosion at high speed in all directions.

Why did Hasan cover it all in rat poison? So as to inflict additional pain upon those victims who otherwise would have suffered only cuts or bruises.

To sum up: a well-educated professionalin-training, who has lived his entire life under Palestinian rule, was so incensed at the idea of a Jew walking in the vicinity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque that he set out to slaughter, maim and poison as many Jews as possible.

In my book, “savage” is too kind a word for such a person.

Continued from page 12 caught in a very early stage, it comprised a relatively small and superficial area of cancerous cells, it hadn’t traveled to or come from elsewhere in my body, and it occurred in an easily accessible location for surgery. I didn’t require radiation or chemotherapy.

But even with my middleweight bout with cancer, I earned a glimpse of the suffering that others who fight harder battles must endure. My anxiety was just as real as theirs, but brief. My prognosis was excellent from the start. Theirs often isn’t.

So my gladness is quiet, humble in the presence of others’ ongoing and much greater challenges.

One thing I’ve learned is not to ignore pain.

Left undiagnosed and untreated, my early, small but potentially metastatic cancer would have grown wider and, worse, deeper. The outcome would have been much less optimistic, and my small suffering much greater. I learned that managing your health, taking action when something isn’t right and seeking professional help, must be a top priority in your life.

I’ve learned how many people care about me.

People I didn’t think even knew me, much less cared, people who I thought were happy hardly thinking of me, went out of their way to send a text or email (it hurt too much to talk, so no one called), not once but often, expressing their concerns, offering their prayers, wishing me well.

So I’ve learned to think more about others when they’re in need. Diseases isolate. You tend to think a lot about yourself. It’s hard to shift your attention to others when you’re hurting, mentally or physically. But you have to try. It’s the best way to take your mind off your worries: focus on others.

I learned from all those people reaching out to me that we need support. It’s obvious we need the help of surgeons and other doctors, their physician’s assistants, the medical secretaries, pathologists, scanning technicians and recordkeepers. But I learned that getting through a tough time — cancer or anything else — depends on valuing the kindness people extend to you. Cherish them. Care for them, too, when they need it.

I’ve also learned not to read the pathology reports yourself before you see the doctor. You may see medical terms that translate to you as doom, but don’t really mean that. Let the doctor do the reading and the explaining.

I’m so lucky to have learned these lessons. A coworker asked if I thought I’d been spared to accomplish something grand. I don’t know — just like the dear folks who don’t know how much their generosity, grace, prayers and concern have meant to me.

Although Rosen was very appreciative of Francis’s visit to Auschwitz, he said that he could not fully embrace the pontiff’s comments on Islam following his tour of the concentration camp.

He referred to the pontiff’s comments in the aftermath of the murder of Catholic priest Father Jacques Hamel by Islamic State-affiliated terrorists on July 26 in a church in the northern French town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. The priest was held hostage along with three nuns and two congregants. Another victim was also stabbed and remains in stable condition.

After the attack, while still in Poland, Francis said “the world is not at war” with Islam, and that the religion should not be blamed for the wave of terrorism in Western Europe in recent months.

“I am not speaking of a war of religions,” Francis told reporters on a plane from Rome to Krakow. “Religions don’t want war. The others want war,” he said. In a press conference aboard the papal plane as he returned to Rome he also added, “it’s not right to identify Islam with violence. It’s not right and it’s not true.”

“Terrorism grows when there is no other option, and to the extent the world economy has at its center the god of money and not the person,” the pope said in response to a question on why he did not link Islamic terrorism with the terror attack in the Catholic Church in northern France. “This is fundamental terrorism, it is against all humanity.”

While in Poland, Francis also used the op-

portunity to speak out and criticize the Polish government’s stance on Middle East refugees, and he encouraged Poles to “welcome those [refugees] fleeing from wars and hunger, and solidarity with those deprived of their fundamental rights, including the right to profess one’s faith in freedom and safety.”

The Polish government refuses to accept refugees fleeing from the Syrian civil war due to a security concern that there is no efficient way to detect lone-wolf terrorists, especially Islamic State sympathizers, amongst the refugees.

Rosen said that “of course social political and especially economic alienation are the swamp in which the anopheles of religious terrorism breeds; and draining that swamp is essential to combat terrorism.”

“But there are other factors at play; not least of all, what examples and ideals of tradition and heritage are nurtured. And this is above all a challenge for Islam,” he said.

“I don’t like to talk of Islamic violence because every day, when I go through the newspapers, I see violence, this man who kills his girlfriend, another who kills his mother-inlaw,” Francis said, in apparent reference to local crime in predominately Catholic Italy. “And these are baptized Catholics. If I speak of Islamic violence, I should speak of Catholic violence,” Francis also said.

Rosenacknowledged that there are extremists in all religions, “and we must not generalize about peoples or religions. However, I think it is a bit disingenuous not to acknowledge that much of contemporary terrorism is perpetrated in the name of Islam.”

“Moreover, I would not hesitate to call Baruch Goldstein and Yigal Amir perpetrators of Jewish terrorism,” Rosen continued. “We must beware of tarring Islam with the brush of terrorists, but if we do not recognize the role and abuse of Islam in these terrorist groups, we will not be able to deal with them effectively.”

PA fires Palestinian man who aided slain rabbi

By Israel Hayom A Palestinian who offered assistance at the scene of a July terrorist attack that killed a rabbi and injured his wife and daughter, has been dismissed from his public service job in the Palestinian Authority.

J., whose full name has not been made public, was the first of two Palestinians who provided assistance to Rabbi Michael Mark, who was shot by terrorists while driving on Route 60, an intercity road across Israel, Judea and Samaria between Nazareth in the north and Beersheba in the south. The Palestinian man helped Mark’s children, who were in the car during the attack, escape the overturned vehicle.

“We saw an overturned car — I stopped my car on the right [side of the road] and we got out. I tried to open the door, but the car was completely locked. All the doors were locked in the front and the back,” J. told Channel 2 in a July interview.

“I saw two children inside screaming and asking me to help them. I put out my hand and for two minutes, I tried to open the door to get to the children who were suffocating in the car.

I think that if they stayed there a little while longer, those children would have suffocated in the car. Out of the shock she felt, the young daughter spontaneously grabbed me and jumped onto me. I immediately put my hand on her head and spoke to her in Hebrew, of course. I told her, ‘Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid, I will help you. Don’t worry’,” he said.

“I did what I did out of humanity. These are children. There were children inside. There were people inside. I didn’t hesitate at all,” he added.

Another Palestinian man, Dr. Ali Abu Sherech from the Hebron area, also stopped at the scene within minutes of the attack and provided medical care to the family. Both men initially believed they were at the scene of a vehicular accident, and did not realize it was a terror attack until security forces arrived.

“As a doctor, I am committed to saving lives, whether Jewish Muslim or Christian” Sherech said. “I examined the father, and he had already died. The mother was suffocating because of the seat belt that had wrapped around her neck, and she suffered gunshot wounds to her upper body.”

“The girl was in shock, and when I examined her, I realized that she was not seriously injured. I tried to explain to her in

English that we wanted to help them, but she did not understand me,” the Palestinian doctor said. “My brother spoke to her gently in Hebrew and explained to her that I am a doctor and that we would help them. We told her that her mother and father would be OK and that medical help would arrive soon and they would be taken to the hospital, though I knew the father was no longer alive. I didn’t want her to panic even more.”

The Palestinian Authority has declined to comment on its decision to dismiss J. from his public service job.

A relative of J.’s told Israel Hayom that “since it became clear that he was the first to arrive at the scene of the attack and that he helped the victims, he and his family have been subjected to a smear campaign and received threats.”

“He is not scared, but it bothers him that he and his family have become outcasts since the event. More than anything, it hurts him that he was fired from his job. They told him that he was let go because of budget cuts, but he was the only one who was fired a few days after the incident,” the relative said, stress-

ing that J. does not regret his decision to help the Mark family.

“Even in a war, you don’t hurt a wounded enemy and you provide assistance, and that is what he did,” he said. “If he could go back, he would do the exact same thing.”

Yochai Damari, the head of the Har Hebron Regional Council in Judea, wrote in a Facebook post, “J. arrived on the scene seconds after the attack and he worked to free the children from the vehicle and to release the seat belt that was strangling the mother, Havi. Afterward, he even watched over the children in his own car and saw to it that nobody hurt them or kidnapped them — this despite the fact that people in the dozens of cars that passed by threatened him and demanded that he refuse to help Jews.”

Damari said that he had met with J., who had asked him to help arrange an Israeli work permit for him. Following the meeting, Damari approached Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman asking for help.

“In situations like these, it is our duty as a Jewish nation to show gratitude toward people who behave like upstanding human beings,” Damari also wrote on Facebook. “Specifically at a time like this, it is important to strengthen the positive forces and to send a clear message that normal and positive behavior like this will result in a normal and positive reward from us.”

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked also commented on the issue during a visit to the Har Hebron area.

“I understand that the Palestinian Authority fired the person who helped the Mark family,” she said. “This is the behavior of [an organization] that encourages terrorism. I will demand of the U.N. secretary-general to take action to stop this abuse of someone whose only sin was to help injured Jews,” she said.

Mark’s wife, Havi, who was seriously injured in the attack, underwent surgery on July 8 at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem and is reported to be in good condition.

Mark’s 17-year-old daughter, Orit, said in July that her father “was a sacred man.”

“I am sure that for anyone who wants something, my dad will sort it out from above, because my dad is now healing my mom. My mom is healing in a way that no one would believe, and we are seeing miracles. Our mother, who almost died, is a courageous mother,” she said.

Nurse’s aliyah honors the life of Dafna Meir…

Schiff, a graduate of Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women, completed her nursing degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore last December — then called off her job hunt in the U.S. and kicked her aliyah process into high gear. She let Nefesh B’Nefesh, an organization coordinating aliyah for 4,000 North Americans each year, know that she had decided to dedicate her aliyah to Meir.

“It just felt so right, and I hoped by honoring [Meir’s] memory in this way it might inspire others to make aliyah,” she said, explaining that she asked the staff of Nefesh B’Nefesh to reach out to Meir’s family members to let them know how much Meir meant to her, and to ask if she could meet with them.

That meeting became possible when Schiff had only been an Israeli citizen for five days.

She met Meir’s widower, Natan Meir, at the Kotel.

It was “the most special day of my life,” Schiff said, describing that hot July day. “To actually meet the husband of the woman who had inspired me like no one else ever has was

such an honor.” He invited her to his daughter’s bat mitzvah the following week.

Meir’s murder thrust her quiet family into the world’s spotlight, which became even more intense as a result of the testimony before the United Nations in April 2016 by Meri’s 17-year-old daughter, Renana.

“When I first heard that there was a young nurse dedicating her aliyah to Dafna, it was surprising and emotional for me and my children,” said Natan Meir, whose six kids range in age from five to 18, and include two foster children. “It was beautiful that she was able to feel so connected to someone she never met and from so far away. But it also taught me something so important.

“If you open your heart, this kind of amazing feeling will reach over to the other side — like when you throw a stone in the water, you see the ripple effect. That something wonderful could come from Dafna’s murder is itself amazing. When tragedy happens and someone you love is no longer with you, it’s very hard to find comfort, to find light. But when something like meeting Elie comes your way it pulls you up from the darkness.”

The grieving husband can also see that the blessing goes both ways.

“Once you do a good deed for your people, it elevates you, strengthens you. Since the word for nurse in Hebrew is achot (sister), when you are a nurse in Israel, you’re a part of a big family (both his own mother and his late wife’s biological mother were also nurses, he explains). “And though Dafna and Elie never met, now a deeper sisterly bond exists between them too.”

This is a fortuitous time to be a nurse in Israel, Debby Gedal-Beer, coordinator of the women’s health and midwifery studies at Sheba Academic School of Nursing of the Tel Hashomer hospital in Ramat Gan, told JNS. org. The field has come a long way in the three decades since Gedal-Beer, a New York

native, made aliyah three decades ago.

“We’ve seen the emergence of nursing specialties, including surgical, intensive care, emergency medicine and nurse-practitioners, plus huge strides in our training programs,” she said, adding that flexible schedules for nurses in Israel tend to promote a healthy work-family balance and higher-than-average job satisfaction.

All of this makes it very appealing for trained young nurses to come to Israel. Indeed, more than a third of new olim are in their 20s, with many just graduating from college and looking to begin their careers on Israeli soil, Nefesh B’Nefesh reported.

The prayer’s final words ask for the praying nurse to get the power to alleviate suffering and “to help [the patient] with all my ability every day and every hour using the tools that You have given me.”

“It captures the way I feel about [Meir] and our profession,” said Schiff. “I just hope I can contribute as much to Israel as she did.”
