Russia â&#x20AC;&#x153;kept its support from the air to the [Syrian President Bashar] Assad coalition throughout the past few months,â&#x20AC;? Michlin-Shapir said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not surprising that Russia still helps Assad in Aleppo, although Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent operations from Iran are a novelty in this campaign and probably meant to antagonize the U.S.â&#x20AC;?

As JNS.org reported in March, Russia has long been an ally of the Syrian government dating back to the Cold War. Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s President Vladimir Putin entered the Syrian civil war in the fall of 2015, claiming it would be attacking terror groups like the Islamic State. But reports indicated Russian forces were largely targeting Syrian rebel groups battling the Syrian government.

Then, in March, Putin made a surprise announcement that he would withdraw the main part of his forces from Syria, though allowing some to remain at Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s naval base in Tartus and its Hmeimim airbase near Latakia.

The withdrawal announcement was simply a façade and geared towards Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s domestic audience, said Anna Borshchevskaya, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Putin has purposefully presented the Syria campaign as very clean, virtually casualty-free, and limited,â&#x20AC;? Borshchevskaya told JNS.org. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After his announcement of his so-called withdrawal, Syria virtually disappeared from the news in Russia, but its operations continued, and reports showed that more Russian weaponry was coming into Syria.â&#x20AC;?

Also, the launch of the Russian bomber planes from Hamadan was not surprising. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Putin appears to be building a bloc to confront the West in the Middle East, and though he says he wants to be friends with everyone in the region, in practice, his policy has more of a pro-Shia tilt,â&#x20AC;? Borshchevskaya said.

Putin also wants to reduce Western inďŹ&#x201A;uence in the Middle East by stopping what he sees as a Western tendency to orchestrate regime changes through â&#x20AC;&#x153;color revolutions, Arab Spring protests, and by supporting protests against Putin inside Russia. From his perspective, he is being pre-emptive. And he wants to appear most of all as a great world leader,â&#x20AC;? she added.

When it comes to Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apparent growing closeness to Iran, the two nations seem to have a common interest in disrupting U.S. inďŹ&#x201A;uence in the Middle East. Russia may also hope to take

advantage of economic opportunities in Iran, now that sanctions from the nuclear deal have been lifted. Both Russia and Iran have large reserves of gas and may also be interested in a partnership on that front. There are, however, key differences. Experts warn that such rapprochement may wane. Borshchevskaya expressed concern that in the long term, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unclear how well Russia can continue to balance the Sunni-Shia Muslim alliances in the region.

Experts also agree that while Russia and Iran are both interested in keeping Assad in power, their reasons are different. Iran wants to keep the Assad regime because it allows it to send the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah arms and ammunition. Russia wants to maintain its economic and security interests in the region, especially by maintaining its bases in Syria. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While Moscow is looking for a secular regime, Tehran is looking for a religious regime, or at least a regime which supports the Shiite aspirations of Iran,â&#x20AC;? Ofer Israeli, an international security policy and Middle East expert at the National Security Studies Center (NSSC) of the University of Haifa, told JNS.org.

Meanwhile, Israel has stayed out of the Syrian conďŹ&#x201A;ict, except by providing medical and humanitarian treatment for civil war wounded Syrians, who are able to escape and cross the border into Israel. In July, Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s government also authorized the delivery of humanitarian aid into Syrian territory near its border.

Yet Israel and Syria are enemy nations, and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) keeps a close eye on Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s border with the country.

The IDF has also targeted military targets within Syria relating to Hezbollah, which is also ďŹ ghting with Assad in Syria and is supported by Iran. From a strategic standpoint, the Israeli government may fear that Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intervention in Syria, and now the apparent collaboration with Iran on this front, could strengthen both Hezbollah and Iranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inďŹ&#x201A;uence in the region.

Despite such concerns, however, Russia and Israel have been developing their own strategic cooperation in the region. In June, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Putin in Moscow, where the two discussed issues such as the ďŹ ght against global terror, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and the Syrian civil war.

Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interest in Israel has a lot to do with the more than one million Russian speakers living in Israel, as well as the two countries sharing strong economic ties, Borshchevskaya said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Putin also inserted himself in the [Middle East] Quartet in an effort to present himself as an impartial peacemaker, though in practice he tends to take a more pro-Palestinian position,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of all, Putin wants to appear important and to stick a ďŹ nger in the eye of the West. He will probably work to reassure the Israelis that this incident wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t damage Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s relations with Israel, but it will certainly raise many questions in Jerusalem.â&#x20AC;?

Yet, in the wake of reports that Russian jets have ďŹ red at Israeli jets patrolling the Syria-Israel border, Israel and Russia have also been increasingly collaborating to prevent either country from inadvertent attacks.

Although Israel and Russia have established a successful dialogue to avoid unnecessary clashes in Syria, â&#x20AC;&#x153;one should not expect that this would fundamentally change Russiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s policies in the Middle East,â&#x20AC;? the INSSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Michlin-Shapir warned. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israel is looking for a coordination with Russia for keeping safe its pilots while they are ďŹ&#x201A;ying near Russian ďŹ ghters in Syria,â&#x20AC;?

Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foreign ministry spokesperson, when contacted by JNS. org, declined to comment on the implications for Israeli interests in the region or for Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s relationship with Russia.

By Sean Savage, JNS.org Jordan’s King Abdullah II vowed to fight against repeated violations and attacks carried out by Israel and extremist groups on the Temple Mount complex, according to an interview in the Jordanian daily Ad-Dustour last week.

Tension between Israel and Jordan over the Temple Mount has simmered for the past few years, as Jewish worshippers and Muslim activists have clashed at the holy site, which ignited larger waves of protests and terrorism by Muslims. Late last year, these tensions spilled over when Jordan pulled its ambassador to Israel, only to later restore its envoy in February. That followed steps by Israel to ease restrictions on Muslim access to the holy site put in place to reduce violence, which further showed a willingness to uphold the status quo agreement.

In last week’s interview, King Abdullah claimed that Israel was seeking to “Judaize” the holy site and was attempting to “violate the sanctity and compromise al-Aksa Mosque. He added that, “Our responsibility towards the Muslim holy places in Jerusalem is our top priority in the international arena, and we use all means necessary to defend the al-Aksa Mosque.”

Further, he vowed that Jordan would resist Israel’s “blatantly repeated attempts to change the status quo in Jerusalem regarding its landmarks and the prejudice against Islamic and Christian peoples.”

These latest comments may signal a deepening strain in relations between Israel and Jordan, one of only two Arab states that has a peace treaty with the Jewish state.

The Temple Mount has long played a pivotal role in Jewish affairs and worship. Yet after the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in the 1st century CE, the site passed through a succession of foreign rulers, from the Muslim Caliphs and Crusaders to more recently the Ottoman and British empires.

While the site was under control of the Muslim Umayyad Caliphate in 691 CE, the Dome of the Rock was built over the site of the former Jewish Temple, a move that still ignites impassioned debate today.

After failing to gain control of Jerusalem’s Old City during the 1948 War of Independence, Israeli forces captured it and the Temple Mount from Jordan during the 1967 Six-Day War. Despite regaining Jewish sovereignty over the Temple Mount, for the first time in nearly 2,000 years, Israeli leaders relinquished religious sovereignty over the site to the Jordanian-run Islamic Waqf. Under that arrangement, which would become the “status quo,” Jewish prayer was forbidden on the Temple Mount and non-Muslim access was restricted to certain days and hours.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted that Israel will not change the Israeli-Jordanian-Palestinian status quo, despite pressure from some members of his own political party and ministerial cabinet to do so.

Jonathan Schanzer, vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told JNS.org Israel has been consistent with maintaining the status quo.

“There has been no change in policy. The only thing that has changed is there has been an increase in the number of Jewish visitors to the compound,” he said.

Still, many within Jordan and the wider Arab world don’t fully understand the status quo agreement, Dr. Abdullah Swalha, director of the Center for Israel Studies in Jordan, explained to JNS.org. “A majority of the people in Jordan and the Arab world don’t understand the agreement since the 1967 war that allowed Jews to visit Temple Mount but not pray,” Swalha said. “When they saw Jews ascended the Temple Mount it made [Jordanians] very upset.”

Islamist groups, led by the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel and Hamas, which are sponsored by Qatar and Turkey, are seeking to incite tensions on the Temple Mount to create a new

situation at the expense of Jordan’s role, Swalha added. Israeli officials have long blamed Palestinian groups like Hamas and the Islamic Movement as well as Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas of using the Temple Mount to incite violence.

“For several years now, the PLO [Palestinian Liberation Organization] has waged a campaign claiming that settlers are storming the Temple Mount,” said Schanzer, of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “This is a wild exaggeration. Jews are allowed on the compound during specific, limited and allotted times. Admittedly, there has been an uptick in the number of Jewish visitors reflecting an increased interest in visiting the Temple Mount. But there is nothing outwardly extremist about these visits.”

While King Abdullah understands that Netanyahu seeks to maintain the status quo, there is concern among Jordanians about groups within Israel that are calling for greater Jewish access to the holy site.

“Unfortunately, we’ve heard many voices expressing a different opinion, especially from the extremely religious groups [in Israel],” Swalha said. “In light of the absence of enough information about domestic policy in Israel, the people in the Arab world thought that this is the stance of the Israel government.”

While tensions continue over the Temple Mount, the relationship between Israel and Jordan otherwise remains fairly strong, as both countries seek to cooperate on a number of economic and security areas amid challenges posed by extremist groups such as the Islamic State.

Military and intelligence cooperation is consistently good, Schanzer said. The diplomatic agreement between the two sides has endured. Jordan’s king recognizes the value of his cooperation with Israel.

In April, Israel Defense Forces Major General Yair Golan said that Israel has seen “unprecedented” intelligence cooperation with Egypt and Jordan

as both countries work against the common threat posed by the Islamic State and other extremists.

“There is high level of cooperation between Jordan and Israel on various issues such as security, environment, agriculture and energy,” Swalha said.

“However, the bilateral relations have been held hostage to the Palestinians–Israeli interactions.”

Despite the challenges over the Temple Mount, Israel and many Sunni Arab states such as Jordan face a common threat from growing Iranian influence and Islamic terrorist groups like the Islamic State. Swalha believes the warm relationship between Israel and Jordan could be a bridge to wider peace with the Sunni Arab world.

“Jordan could play a key role in bringing all the parties (Israel and Sunni Arab states) together,” he said. However, progress on Israeli-Palestinian peace needs to be renewed if there is going to be any breakthrough in Israeli-Arab relations.

Jill Stein’s Green Party lies BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT

T

he far left U.S. Green Party marked a significant milestone in the current campaign cycle when CNN broadcast a town hall debate with its presidential candidate, Jill Stein, and her running mate, Ajamu Baraka. It was a chance for the largely obscure party to build upon the momentum generated by Sen. Bernie Sander’s bid for the Democratic Party nomination with a progressive platform untainted, as Stein and Baraka emphasized again and again, by the paw prints of corporate lobbyists, special interest groups and dubious foreign governments.

Lacking the kind of media broadcast training that turns our minted politicians into eternally smiling taking heads, Stein and Baraka certainly looked, on the CNN stage, like fairly ordinary people suddenly plunged into the limelight of politics. That should be seen as a plus for them, particularly at a time when political discourse is marked by a distrust of “elites.”

Both Stein and Baraka spoke earnestly and that was matched in their body language. For much of the debate, Baraka wore a scholarly frown, while Stein carried herself with the kindly, caring bedside manner that befits a medical doctor. So, you might think a consummate performance all round, and a great opportunity for a party that has no chance of actually winning the election, as its candidates readily concede, to insert itself into the American debate moving forward.

Except for one confounding note: The Green Party’s self-image is built upon a series of lies, as I will duly explain. To understand how those lies came about, some context is first in order. f “The Green Party” doesn’t sound like an especially American construct, that’s because it isn’t. The notion of an environmentalist political party is a European one, and it was in the countries of western Europe that “Green” parties first emerged, from the ashes of the failed student revolt at the end of the 1960s.

This was particularly true in Germany, whose Green Party lit the path for its imitators elsewhere. There, the failure of mass protest led some left-wingers into the terrorism of the Baader-Meinhof gang, much of it directed against Israeli and Jewish targets. Others got involved in bizarre and sometimes disturbing experiments in communal living. Against those two trajectories, the most sensible option was the political current that birthed the Green Party, which presented environmentalism as an innovative way of opposing capitalist economics, and which also underlined that political change is a process that needs to be led by “social movements,” not just political parties

operating in elected parliaments.

But the newfound environmentalism of the 1970s didn’t displace all the old loyalties. The practice of making the Palestinians the supreme cause of global justice warriors only intensified.

The ingrained habit of turning a blind eye to human rights abuses committed by post-colonial regimes against their own citizens continued.

The American incarnation of the Green Party is no different. Precisely for that reason, we have to interpret Stein’s description of her party’s platform as based on the principles of international law, human rights and economic justice as an outright lie.

Unfortunately, because of CNN’s softball approach to the two candidates, viewers weren’t given a chance to see where the party’s real loyalties lie. For one thing, Baraka was allowed to get away with his appalling description of Pres. Obama as an “Uncle Tom” still intact. For another, the party’s support for the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign targeting Israel went unmentioned. he reality is that Stein, Baraka, and their fellow activists are giving unconditional support to a campaign that seeks to destroy the state of Israel outright. BDS isn’t about peace; it’s about dismantling the national sovereignty of a member state of the United Nations. So much for international law, then.

As for human rights, it’s instructive that this debate took place at the same time as warplanes deployed by both Russia – from an airbase in Iran – and the Bashar al Assad regime in Damascus struck mercilessly in the Aleppo region of Syria. Surely the sight of thousands of dead and traumatized children should lead us to charge both Assad and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin with war crimes?

Not according to Stein. Here’s what she had to say on the subject on a recent visit to, where else, Moscow: “The Obama Administration’s obsession with toppling the government in Damascus is fundamentally inconsistent with winning the fight against Islamic State (ISIS)... This isn’t a clever foreign policy, it’s disastrous militarism.” Leave aside the minor lie – Obama has actually kowtowed to the Russians over Syria and should be given due credit – and focus on

the major one: namely, the spectacle of someone who describes herself as a human rights advocate supporting the survival of one of the most vicious regimes the Middle East has ever seen.

On the CNN debate, Stein spoke in favor of an arms embargo on the entire Middle East.

Though she didn’t say so explicitly, the main focus here is upon Israel, and European Green parties have long been enthusiastic supporters of preventing the Jewish state from defending itself. But her proposal would also impact our Muslim allies in the region, like the Kurds and the secular and nationalist elements of the Syrian opposition.

This icy indifference to the suffering of millions of Arabs oppressed by an Arab dictator, along with the dogmatic insistence that outrages, perpetuated by Islamist terrorists like Al Qaeda and ISIS are solely a reaction to rampant western colonialism, tells us only that the U.S. Green Party stands with the dictators, the fanatics and the bullies. Even the call for economic justice is laughable; Stein herself had no problem with paying homage to Putin in Moscow, even though he surrounds himself with oligarchs and gangsters. And neither she nor Baraka had anything to say about Iran, where economic justice is about as meaningful a concept as the rights of women or the right to form an independent labor union. haven’t even mentioned Baraka’s shady collaborations with 9/11 conspiracy theorists or Holocaust deniers, though, which serves merely to confirm the extremist foundations of Green Party politics.

The overriding point is this: in the politically turbulent years that indubitably lie ahead of this election, the Green Party will position itself as an alternative for Americans who care about democracy, the environment, access to higher education and a reformed criminal justice system. Those are decent goals, and they are irreconcilable with the monumental violence and injustice that come with supporting dictatorships that have bombed an entire nation back into the stone age. For that reason, and many others, the Green Party is a fraud.

In fact, thanksgiving is an entirely different topic, and we do in fact have many blessings that are about thanksgiving, such as the Modim prayer in the silent Amidah and the Nodeh Lecha blessing after meals. o what is the meaning of the word brachah? When Hashem blesses Avraham, the verse in Genesis says, “Va’Hashem Beirach et Avraham Bakol” (“And G-d blessed Avraham with everything”). And the commentaries there suggest that Hashem actually blessed Avraham by increasing his wealth as well as his progeny. Rav Soleveitchick adds that this is indeed the true nature of the word bracha, to increase.

To be blessed means that something is increased, whether it is the joy in your life, your sense of fulfillment or even having more children. In fact, when you bless someone that their business should be successful, you are really hoping they will earn more money.

So how do we bless Hashem, and why does Hashem need our blessing?

Obviously, Hashem doesn’t need our blessings; rather, we need to be blessing Hashem.

Blessing G-d is, quite simply, the art of increasing Hashem’s presence in our lives and in all that we do.

an apple is actually a conscious decision to elevate the simple act of eating an apple into an opportunity to appreciate G-d’s presence in your life. And the more we are willing to be partners in bringing G-d into our lives and into this world, the higher level the world, and us along with it, will reach.

In these times filled with so many challenges, and with so much work needed to create a better society, the daily act of blessing our bread serves as both a reminder and an inspiration of how different the world could be, if only we were all willing to make it so.

hat motivates some people to do more than just appreciate the blessings they have in their lives and to actually be a vehicle for blessing?

This week’s portion, Ekev, contains one of the pivotal verses of the entire Torah regarding the concept of blessings: “Ve’achalta’ ve’sava’ta’ u’verachta’ et Hashem Elokecha al ha’aretz hatovah asher natan lach.” (“And [when] you shall eat and be satisfied and bless G-d your G-d for the good land which He has given you.”) (Devarim 8:10) This verse is the biblical basis for the Birkat Hamazon, the four blessings we say after a meal which includes a satisfying helping of bread, and begs a number of questions.

First, how does one bless G-d? Thanking G-d is one thing — after all, it makes sense to be appreciative of all the gifts we are blessed with and the value of being thankful for it all, especially to the source of all good in this world. But what does it mean to bless G-d? Why would G-d need our blessings, much less demand them? In fact, what exactly is a blessing?

At a Friday night dinner, I recall meeting a fellow who seemed quite prominent in his shul, and who sponsored the evening in memory of his son who had passed away in a tragic car accident. At the end of dinner, thinking it would be appropriate, I asked him if he would honor us by leading the blessings after the meal but he politely declined, saying “I don’t do that!”

iven that he appeared quite knowledgeable in Judaism and seemed familiar and even comfortable with Jewish tradition, I was somewhat surprised by his comment and later found the opportunity to ask him what he meant.

“I used to buy it all — the whole nine yards,” he explained to me. “And I still think Judaism is an incredible system with a magnificent community structure. I grew up religious and have never driven on Shabbat nor knowingly placed nonkosher food in my mouth, and I never will. I even believe in G-d — who else could be the reason we are all here?’

“But after He took my son, I’ll be damned if I’m ever going to bless Him again!”

While at the time, due to the circumstances, I wasn’t able to have the long discussion such a comment almost demands (and of course, far be it from me to have the arrogance to judge such a person, given the pain he had obviously suffered). I did manage to ask him what he thought blessings were. He responded that he had never really thought about it, but upon reflection realized he considered it to be a form of thanksgiving and recognition (and he felt himself unable to be fully thankful to a G-d whom he perceived to have taken his son).

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the end of the world just because an Egyptian athlete refused to shake hands with his Israeli counterpart at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro last week. After all, the Egyptian is the one who violated judo etiquette. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the one whom the fans booed.

I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lose any sleep over his petty insult, and I doubt many Israelis will either. But the incident, as small as it was, does offer some food for thought about much bigger issues, such as the prospects for peace between Israel and her Arab neighbors.

The Judo Snubber, Islam El Shehaby, was born on Aug. 1, 1982. In other words, he was born nearly ďŹ ve years after Anwar Sadatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visit to Jerusalem. Four years after the successful Camp David negotiations. Three and a half years after the signing of the IsraelEgypt peace treaty. Three months after the ďŹ nal Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai.

Which is to say that El Shehaby has never known anything but peace with Israel.

Throughout his entire life, Egypt has been at peace, not at war, with the Jewish State.

So if El Shehaby hates Israel, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not because of anything in his personal experience. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a bitter war veteran. He didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t watch his friends die in some tank battle with the Israelis. There has to be some other reason to explain his hostility. And there is.

The peace treaty requires both parties to â&#x20AC;&#x153;abstain from hostile propagandaâ&#x20AC;? against each other. Former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin insisted on that clause because he understood that for peace to last, it has to be between peoples, not just between leaders.

Leaders, of course, come and go. Sadat was assassinated in October 1981, even before Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ nal withdrawal. Begin resigned from ofďŹ ce in October 1983. For peace between Israel and Egypt to endure, both countries had to consciously educate their people to accept it.

The Israeli public didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need much convincing. The Israelis, after all, were the victims. They were the ones who were desperate for peace. And even those who had some qualms about Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enormous concessions

â&#x20AC;&#x201D; giving up the entire Sinai peninsula, surrendering the oil ďŹ elds, tearing down the Jewish communities in the Yamit region â&#x20AC;&#x201D; soon retreated from their opposition.

Not so in Egypt. Neither Sadat nor his successors ever made any serious effort to educate the younger generation to accept peace.

The Egyptian government-controlled media, mosques, and schools continued to spout hatred of Israel and Jews.

As a child, Islam El Shehaby no doubt was inculcated with the same anti-Israel and anti-Semitic hatred that dominated Egyptian society before there was a peace treaty. Real peace never took hold. The treaty has been, and remains, little more than a long-term ceaseďŹ re. ow, a ceaseďŹ re is of course much better than gunďŹ re. But a ceaseďŹ re is a fragile thing. If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not backed by deep, wideranging societal support for peace, then it could be broken at any time, by some new leader who decides he prefers war. And because the Egyptian public has been educated and conditioned for war all these years, it will back him up.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the problem with Islam El Shehaby.

He continues to view Israel as the enemy, all these years later. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why he could not bring himself to shake the hand of his Israeli judo opponent. There may be â&#x20AC;&#x153;peace,â&#x20AC;? but heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ready for war--ready and willing.

Which is why so many Israelis are reluctant about the idea of establishing a Palestinian state next door. If 34 years after the peace treaty was signed, an Egyptian athlete still will not even shake hands with an Israeli, what does that portend for peace with the Palestinians, whose entire society is drenched in hatred of Israel and Jews?

The consolation that Israelis can derive from peace with Egypt is that although itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shallow, at least most of the Egyptian army is separated from Israel by the Sinai. A Palestinian army, however, would be just a few miles from Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too much of a risk to ask Israelis to take. They have every right to wait until they see meaningful changes in Palestinian society before they start talking about taking those kinds of chances. The non-handshake in Rio de Janeiro is a reminder of that reality.

JEWISH STAR Volunteers pack schoolbags Wed. evening at YOSS

Library draws kids

As kids get ready to go back to school, hundreds of school-aged youth and parent volunteers will assemble backpacks with school supplies for underprivileged children in the Five Towns communities on Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 5 to 8 pm at the Yeshiva of South Shore.

It’s the UJA-Federation of New York’s Seventh Annual Long Island Tov B’Yachad Supplies for Success.

Over 100 volunteers are expected to descend on the Hewlett school, at 1170 William St. to pack 750 backpacks for distribution to needy children. A total of about 11,000 backpacks will be distributed throughout Long Island and the metro New York area via UJAFederation’s beneficiary agencies, yeshivas, and other local organizations.

Since its inception, the Supplies for Success program has provided more than 46,000 filled backpacks, working to ensure that New York area children return to school with the tools they need to succeed. Last year, the program provided filled backpacks to more than 10,000 disadvantaged children through UJA-Federation beneficiary agencies, schools and yeshivas and shelters and other local organizations that provide help for people in need.

Throughout summer, the voices of children of all ages could be heard at the Levi Yitzchak Library on Central Avenue in Cedarhurst which hosted a variety of programs.

The summer may be settling down, but the excitement is not as Levi Yitzcak prepares for a new season including school trips, Mommy & Me, homework helpers, book club, Sunday Centers, Rosh Chodesh Birthday Bash, storyime and Writer’s Block.

to all the required state standards and tests,” says Gail Meisenburg, SHA’s middle school math and science teacher leader. “It’s an exciting three-dimensional program that helps form well-rounded students with a diversity of interests and educational experiences.”

For teachers at SHA, the end-of-summer period before the start of the new school year is a time to prepare new lesson plans that will continue to engage and excite students and enhance the learning process.

“We want our students to develop a love of learning, to become active inquisitors,” says. Meisenburg. “They’re not just learning math, they’re building cultural literacy. We are doing this in every class with every student at every grade level.”

“Our students are learning things in math and science classes that would typically be taught in history or English,” she said.

Color war, with ‘Ruach’ Color War launched summer’s closing days at Ruach Day Camp in Uniondale. This year’s theme was Mayim/Water (blue team) and Aish/Fire (red team). Both are elements of great significance — rain is essential to humanity’s existence and it is Hashem who controls this key to survival; fire, on the other hand, requires human ingenuity and creativity in order to be employed.

For three days, the spirit of good sportsmanship, friendly competition and team spirit were visible throughout the camp.

Campers participated in a variety of competitions including sports, pool games, Pokemon Go contests, trivia games, Apache Re-

lays, cupcake wars, and cheers. Lunchtime competitions between the generals were a highlight for the campers.

The girls’ dance routines and the “Stomps” were amazing!

The conclusion of Color War was the presentation of beautiful artistic banners with an explanatory d’var Torah, along with original songs, stomps and cheers.

Younger campers participated in a lollipop hunt.

The event’s conclusion featured a performance by The Twins from France — their shenanigans, juggling routines, bicycle stunts and tricks were amazing to watch.

Learning and teaching at the Sonia and Max Silverstein Hebrew Academy (SHA) in Great Neck are definitely not “old-school.”

Take the seventh grade biology class, which finds students performing avant-garde interpretive dances, working on short stories, and maybe even on an exotic sculpture.

At SHA, curriculum mirrors life: dynamic and interconnected. Those dancers, the short-story author and the sculpture artist are studying biology, just in a way that goes beyond the textbook.

Students are learning about the nature of cell division, and as part of the curriculum are asked to develop innovative presentations that display their findings to classmates. The open-ended nature of the lesson allows students at SHA to leverage their strengths, interests and passions to tackle a biology lesson that might have been difficult to comprehend if only taught with traditional, or “old-school,” educational methods.

The seventh grade biology class is typical of the academy’s innovative approach to contemporary education’s emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math — or S.T.E.A.M. — by concentrating on multiple areas in the S.T.E.A.M. discipline within one lesson rather than spread out over separate and segmented classes.

Similar philosophy is on display in SHA’s math class, where teachers use a progressive program called GO Math! to supplement course work. GO Math! is renowned for using multiple skills — reading, writing, vocabulary, problem solving — to solve problems.

She is the third Azoulay sibling and the fourth member of the Azoulay family to serve in the IDF. Her oldest brother, Tal, made aliyah 15 years ago and served in the Golani Brigade. Middle brother Ittai was in a tank unit (though he has since returned to the U.S.), and father Marc served in the army several decades ago as an 18-year-old French immigrant.

Azoulay said she grew up on inspirational stories of her fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service. At 12, her grandparents brought her to Israel for her bat mitzvah and she fell in love with the Jewish state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I did my bat mitzvah on top of Masada,â&#x20AC;? Azoulay recalled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My brother was still in the reserves and it was the Second Lebanon War. The ďŹ rst night I arrived, he got called up to serve and I ended up not seeing him the entire trip. I decided at that point how important it was [to serve in the army], and that I felt the need to do the same.â&#x20AC;?

Azoulay hung on to her IDF dream through middle- and high-school, and even college at New York University. Now, she is hoping sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have the opportunity to be an infantry instructor.

Her father Marc said he and his wife are â&#x20AC;&#x153;very happyâ&#x20AC;? for their daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision, but also sad knowing she wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be home for Shabbat dinners on Friday night or to help in Tavlin Market, their Middle Eastern grocery in Bellmore. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She has her life to live and we are behind her 100 percent,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israel is not an easy place to start a life. But working toward a common goal of keeping the state of Israel alive and vibrant and

I am lucky to be joining the army,â&#x20AC;? Eyal Kidron, 22, from West BloomďŹ eld, Mich., told JNS.org before boarding the El Al charter ďŹ&#x201A;ight at JFK. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We [Jews] have a right to live, and I have to do my part. I am happy to do it.â&#x20AC;?

Noam Fink, 18, from Brookline, Mass., said that when her brother, currently serving in an intelligence unit, enlisted 18 months ago, it conďŹ rmed her belief that she could make it work.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;My parents always instilled the value of going to the army and wanting to live in Israel,â&#x20AC;? Fink said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have to give back to this country that has given us so much â&#x20AC;&#x201D; culture-wise, identity-wise,â&#x20AC;? Fink said.

Finkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents are Israeli. She attended Jewish day school, and then Hebrew schools and Jewish camps. She said those experiences inďŹ&#x201A;uenced her a lot, too. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to be in the canine unit â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or anything combat will work,â&#x20AC;? Fink said with a laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be doing such different things I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think we can be compared.â&#x20AC;?

And will Finkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two younger brothers, ages 12 and 14, also join the IDF one day? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hope so!â&#x20AC;? she said proudly.

Samuel Friedman, 17, from Silver Spring, Md. is also joining the IDF. His older brother made aliyah in 2013 and served in the IDF for three years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a good time, so I ďŹ gured I might as well do it too,â&#x20AC;? Friedman, who will be living on

the same kibbutz as his brother during his service, told JNS.org. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am not worried at all. I am sure I will be OK.â&#x20AC;?

Michiganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kidron will also be joining siblings in Israel. Three of his older siblings have made aliyah and/or live in Israel, and two of them served in the IDF before him. Kidron recalled how at age seven, his older brother returned home with his paratrooper wings and he was so proud of his sibling. From then on, he was inspired to join the Israeli army.

Growing up in the U.S., he always told his friends he would one day enlist. While that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop him from making friends and living a classic American lifestyle, they all knew that one day they would see him go. Now, he hopes to join a medical rescue unit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been training intensely,â&#x20AC;? Kidron said, noting that the good thing about having older siblings who have gone through the army is that they can tell him â&#x20AC;&#x153;what to do and work on â&#x20AC;&#x201D; aerobic, acrobatic workouts, running.â&#x20AC;?

In the months leading up to his aliyah ďŹ&#x201A;ight, Kidron loaded his backpack up with 40 pounds and went on long runs â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;just trying to stay as ďŹ t as possible.â&#x20AC;?

He said he knows the army will be physically trying, but the mental pressure is even greater â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and making it in Israel as a lone soldier â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the mental stress is the biggest ďŹ ght.

At the welcoming ceremony Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said in his remarks he knows the decision is not easy to make aliyah. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Leaving behind family and friends, looking for work, starting in new schools, learning a new language, there are challenges ahead but we are all here to support you and help you build your new home,â&#x20AC;? Rivlin said.

Kidron said he is conďŹ dent he will make it through. His message to others who are considering a similar move: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget that Israel belongs to all of us. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be born there to live there.

WHO’S IN THE KITCHEN

F

or the last eight years, my daughter Jordana and I have discussed flying down to Atlanta to catch a few games at “The Ted,” another name for Turner Field baseball stadium, home of our beloved Atlanta Braves. We weren’t able to find an opening in each of our schedules when the Braves would be playing at home — until now.

Jordana looked for affordable flights and I checked out hotels not far from the stadium.

I reminded her that the surname on my license and passport was Pollack, put it’s Joszef on my credit card. She booked the flights I booked the hotel.

Three weeks later, the night before our flight, Jordana sent me my ticket; to my horror, the ticket was listed under Joszef. At 11:30 pm, I called American Airlines and explained my situation. Their only solution was to issue a new ticket. They reduced the $200 fee to $100 — a bargain!

I arrived at the airport at 8:40 for an 11:27 am flight, to make sure there were no issues with my ticket. I checked in, made sure all was in order and bought a coffee while waiting for Jordana, who arrived by 9:30. We headed to Gate D, which was printed on our boarding passes, charged our phones, spoke about finally watching our boys in their hometown, and by 10:50 am we were wondering why we weren’t boarding. We walked up to the desk and noticed the flight info wasn’t up anymore. In a panic we inquired,

pm, but it was cancelled due to storms about to hit New York. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky — the only storm about to hit LGA was me!

Best she could do was put us on a 2:15 pm flight to Atlanta, with a stopover in Washington.

We would arrive in Atlanta at 8 pm. At least we only had carry-on and could get out of the airport quickly. But, of course the flight from Washington was packed and there was no room in the overhead bins and our bags had to be checked. Making the baseball game that night didn’t look like a reality. At that point, my daughter decided it was my fault. “You got here so early, the gate changed after you got the passes,” she said. Really? hen we landed, we ran to baggage claim and waited for the belt to start.

As soon as it did a large piece of luggage came out sideways and got stuck. Everything stopped moving. Being we were the only passengers there at that time, I looked at Jord and she gingerly stood on the belt as I held her if it happened to start, and just as she was about to straighten the suitcase the lights flashed, and the alarm sounded She jumped off and the belt started. We grabbed our bags and ran outside to a waiting Uber which took us to our hotel. We checked our bags at the front desk and ran back to the Uber, which brought us to the stadium for the start of the fifth inning.

We were like two kids in a candy store, marveling at everything Braves. We finally made it. And then it happened — the Braves chant, in person, live with all the Atlanta fans; we did the chop, on home soil. We were home.

The next day we got to the stadium and were part of the VIP batting practice experience. We were on the field within touching distance of the players. All the coaches, players and manager, right there. We got to meet and take pictures with a few, but the highlight was Jordana meeting Jeff Francoeur, the reason Jordana became a Braves fan in 2005. And it just so happened she wearing an original 2005 Francoeur #7 jersey.

She turned around and showed him the number on the back. They spoke for a bit and I snapped a photo of them. Doesn’t get better than that. Oh, but it does. All the players retreated to the clubhouse to shower and get ready for the game and we were talking to some Braves personnel, when ten minutes later Francoeur walks back out on the field.

People start crowding around him, but he walked straight through them and towards Jordana, holding out his bat. “This is for you,” he said. Fans wondered if he knew her.

The next night we were lucky to sit directly behind the Brave’s dugout. At one point a bunch of dugout bubble gum ended up on Jordana’s lap, then a handful of sunflower See JUDY BACK on page 21

and were told, “The gate was changed.” Really? “Would have been nice for someone to let us know.” No announcements at Gate D and no texts or emails.

We went flying to the correct gate (no, let me rephrase that: my athletic daughter went flying, and I tried to keep up). Unfortunately Jordana had to go through security again, so got on line. “You can’t wait on this line, we have to get to that gate ASAP!” I screamed.

“You have to get to the front of the line.”

She looked at me and said she couldn’t just cut the line. I ran over to an AA rep and explained we were given the wrong gate. She explained we could ask each person on line to go ahead. She did and made it to security, and of course the belt stopped with her hand luggage inside. After ten minutes of holding myself back from being arrested, she got through and we breathlessly made it to the gate. We had two minutes to spare (according to as the sign, we must arrive ten minutes before flight or seats will be given away). Well, obviously AA didn’t know their own rules. We were told doors were closed and our seats were given away. “Well then, open them, we’re here 12 minutes before and you put the incorrect gate number on our passes.”

I looked at Jordana and warned her that I would have to have a word with the supervisor. She normally would not want me to go “psycho,” as she calls it, but this time she gave me her blessing. I explained that we needed to get on the flight, it was their mistake we were late and they closed the doors early. After speaking (in my “psycho” voice) to the supervisor, she agreed, but by then flight had taken off.

Researchers have discovered how melanoma spreads through the body, a breakthrough they hope will lead to cancer becoming nonthreatening and easily curable, according to a new Tel Aviv University study done in cooperation with the German Cancer Research (DKFZ).

Melanoma is an aggressive cancer that kills one person every 52 minutes, according to the international Skin Cancer Foundation.

The study, which looked at the spread of melanoma, was published in a Nature Cell Biology article.

Scientists found that before spreading, melanoma tumors send out small vesicles with molecules that trigger structural changes in the skin that prepare it for receiving cancer cells, and transporting them further.

The scientists also found chemical substances that can stop the process, which raises hope

Then comes the warning: â&#x20AC;&#x153;When G-d repulses them before you, do not say to yourselves, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;It was because of my virtue that G-d brought me to inherit this land.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; It was because of the wickedness of these nations that G-d is driving them out before you. It was not because of your virtue and basic in-

tegrity that you are coming to inherit their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations whom G-d is driving out before you.

It is also because G-d is keeping the word that He swore to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Therefore, realize that it is not because of your virtue that G-d your L-rd is giving you this land as an inheritance, since you are a very stubborn nation. Remember and never forget how you provoked G-d your L-rd in the desert. From the day you left Egypt until you came here, you have been rebelling against G-d. Even at Horeb you provoked G-d! And G-d was ready to display anger and destroy you.â&#x20AC;? (9:4-8) Were these two sentiments in different parts of the Torah, there would be no issue. But they are back to back, which suggestsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; as they are part of the same speech â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that Moshe was repeating himself.

Was Moshe repeating himself? If yes, why?

And if no, then what are we to take from the seeming repetition? ne of the lessons I recall from a homiletics class I took in rabbinical school is to â&#x20AC;&#x153;tell them what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to say, say it, and then summarize what you told them.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an effective tool for helping people retain your message. Perhaps Moshe was utilizing the Homiletics Playbook to remind people about the promise made to the forefathers and their need to recognize why they were being helped, and to also realize why they may have otherwise been undeserving. In this way, repetition drives the message home.

On the other hand, if Moshe is not using that strategy, then there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ofďŹ cially a repetition here and he is making different points

in each of these two narratives.

Which is why you should never trust a question like this, because until you see the big picture, the question is a distraction from the reality.

When Parshat Vaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;etchanan ends, its concluding statement is another ringing endorsement for the need to observe and keep the commandments. Then Parshat Eikev begins with the signature phrase of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Eikev Tishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;oonâ&#x20AC;? (on account of your listening to G-d, good things will happen).

As Mosheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s monologue continues, he covers the range of feelings and emotions the people may experience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you think of the numbers of enemies you must vanquish and the impossibility you face with such an endeavor, just remember what G-d did to Egypt.â&#x20AC;? (7:17-18) ore strikingly, Moshe warns of what will happen when things are going well for everyone, so well that they begin to forget why all the goodness comes about. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Perhaps youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll eat and be satisďŹ ed. And youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have lots of animals and money, and houses ďŹ lled with everything you could possibly need. Your heart will be haughty and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll forget G-d Who took you out of Egypt, who gave you water from a rock, who fed you manna in the wilderness. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;It was all my strength that accomplished thisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;?

(8:11-18) Moshe concludes this section by warning that if the Jewish people forget G-d, they will be lost and destroyed. And why? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Eikev lo tishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;oon bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;kol Hashemâ&#x20AC;? (on account of your not listening to G-d). This language choice provides us with a substantive bookend

which closes the tale that began the parshat.

Apparently it is not so simple for the Jewish people to guarantee subservience to G-d; there is always the lingering chance that the people will turn in the wrong direction. This not something anyone likes to hear â&#x20AC;&#x201D; because it IS deďŹ&#x201A;ating, nd it IS depressing, and it does contribute to a helplessness and hopelessness of â&#x20AC;&#x153;why should I even try?â&#x20AC;?

The answer to the deďŹ&#x201A;ating question is, if I may quote the emperor from Star Wars, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because it is your dessssstiny!â&#x20AC;?

And this is where Chapter 9 comes into the picture. Moshe begins with the ubiquitous terms â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shema Yisrael,â&#x20AC;? as if to remind the people what they are all about. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nod to the famous verse in which we declare Gdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oneness. And in the context of pleas not to follow the ways of idolators, the hint isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even so subtle.

Then Moshe goes on to describe how things will go â&#x20AC;&#x201D; big nations, giants, etc., but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let the depressing nature of the previous chapter hold you back. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, there is a promise, there is a guarantee that despite the odds against us, things will turn out OK. And that stems from the promise made to the forefathers, and G-dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love for the forefathers.

Never forget that.

What do we need to do to fulďŹ ll the mandate given to the people Moshe was addressing? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very simple formula â&#x20AC;&#x201D; keep the mitzvoth, remember your G-d, and remember that when all else seems to be failing, we will always maintain a connection to G-d because he loved our forefathers. It gives us hope, because we always have an ace in the hole, the connection that continues to exist between us and our Creator, no matter what challenges life sends our way.

he expression, â&#x20AC;&#x153;And you shall love the L-rd, your G-dâ&#x20AC;? appears twice in the Torah, the ďŹ rst instance in Parashat Vaetchanan (Devarim 6:5), and the second in this week Parashat Eikev (Devarim 11:1). While both pasukim begin with this phrase, they conclude quite differently from one another: â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;&#x153;And you shall love the L-rd, your G-d, with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your means.â&#x20AC;? (6:5) â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;&#x153;And you shall love the L-rd, your G-d; keep His charge, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments, all the days. (11:1) In broad terms, the ďŹ rst verse focuses upon what one needs to dedicate to Hashem in order to demonstrate love for Him, namely, oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart, soul and means. Rashi explains each term in the following manner: With all your heart: Love Him with your two inclinations [the good and the evil]. (Midrash Sifrei; Talmud Bavli Berachot 54a) Another explanation; â&#x20AC;&#x153;with all your heart,â&#x20AC;? is that your heart should not be divided [i.e., at variance] with the Omnipresent (Midrash Sifrei).

And with all your soul: Even if He takes your soul (Midrash Sifrei; Talmud Bavli, Berachot 54a, 61a).

And with all your means: There are people whose possessions are more precious to them than their own bodies. Therefore, it says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and with all your means.â&#x20AC;? (Midrash Sifrei) Another explanation of this is: You shall love G-d with whatever measure He metes out to you, whether it be the measure of good or the measure of retribution.

In contrast, our parashaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pasuk teaches us what we need to do in practice to express our love of Hashem, namely, â&#x20AC;&#x153;keep His charge, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments;â&#x20AC;? in sum, fulďŹ ll the Torah throughout our entire lives. he Ramban (Nachmanides) was very sensitive to every nuance of language that is found in Tanach. As such, he focuses upon our pasukâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s phrase â&#x20AC;&#x153;keep His chargeâ&#x20AC;? (â&#x20AC;&#x153;vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;shamarta mishmartoâ&#x20AC;?), since this is the sole time it appears in the Five Books of the Torah. He offers two interpretations of this expression; the ďŹ rst is versespeciďŹ c, whereas the second is holistic in nature: Keep His charge: To have awe and fear before Him in order that you will guard yourself from sinning before Him. [This wording is utilized at this juncture,] since after He will command you through love [â&#x20AC;&#x153;And you shall love the L-rd, your G-d,â&#x20AC;?] He will command you through awe, and instruct you regarding the statutes, ordinances and mitzvot.

This analysis of â&#x20AC;&#x153;vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;shamarta mishmartoâ&#x20AC;? bespeaks a deep sensitivity to human nature. According to the Ramban, the Master of the Universe knew quite well that He ďŹ rst needed to create a love-based relationship between Himself and the Jewish people prior to mandating the awe and fear of Him that are essential to avoid sin. Moreover, I believe a careful examina-

tion of the ďŹ rst of the Aseret Hadibrot (10 Utterances) wherein G-d introduced Himself as, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am the L-rd your G-dâ&#x20AC;? (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anochi Hashem Elokecha,â&#x20AC;?

Sefer Shemot 20:2) strongly supports Nachmanidesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; explication. Hashem (L-rd) represents the quality of love and mercy, and notably precedes â&#x20AC;&#x153;Elokecha,â&#x20AC;? the characteristic of strict and demanding judgment that, leads us, as human beings, to a sense of awe and fear.

Thus, here, too, love comes before awe and fear.

The Rambanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second elucidation of â&#x20AC;&#x153;vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;shamarta mishmarto,â&#x20AC;? presents his well-known proclivity for revealing ethical-based meaning in the Torah text: Keep His charge: [This means that] you must protect that which Hashem protects; for He protects the strangers (â&#x20AC;&#x153;hagareimâ&#x20AC;?), shows favor to the poor and downtrodden, and seeks justice for the orphan and the widow. And we ďŹ nd a somewhat parallel text [to ours] in another location [in Tanach]: â&#x20AC;&#x153;And keep the charge of the L-rd your G-d to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do, and wherever you turn.â&#x20AC;? (Sefer Melachim I: 2:3) [Moreover, our Sages] said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just as He shows favor and is merciful, so, too, should you show favor and be merciful.â&#x20AC;? (Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 133b)

Our parasha teaches us what we need to do in practice to express our love of Hashem: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Keep His charge, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;

This exposition of the Ramban is nothing less than an intellectual and spiritual triumph, for he has taken the seemingly legalistic words, â&#x20AC;&#x153;vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;shamarta mishmarto,â&#x20AC;? and discovered within them the language of the ultimate ethical gesture, namely, imitatio Dei, the emulation of Hashemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actions. This principle is given extended voice in a celebrated passage in Talmud Bavli: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just as Hashem clothed the naked [in the case of Adam and Chava]â&#x20AC;Ś so, too, should you clothe the naked. Just as Hashem visited the sick [in the case of Avraham after his brit milah]â&#x20AC;Ś so, too, should you visit the sick. Just as the Holy One Blessed be He comforted the mourners [in the case of Yitzhak after Avrahamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing]â&#x20AC;Ś so, too, should you comfort the mourners. Just as the Holy One Blessed be He buried the dead [in the case of Moshe]â&#x20AC;Ś so, too, should you bury the dead.â&#x20AC;?

With the Torah as our guide, may we learn to love the Almighty, hold Him in awe, and emulate His actions. May we, thereby, grow closer to understanding what it truly means to serve Him and guard His holy Torah. Vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;chane yihi ratzon.

he sacred ritual of Birkat HaMazon, benching, the Grace After Meals, is the subject of a new volume entitled, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Birkon Mesorat Haravâ&#x20AC;? (OU Press, Koren Publishers).

It centers the teachings of the Rav â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, ztâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122;l â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and is based on commentary compiled by Rabbi Daniel Besser and edited by Rabbi David Hellman.

This is a comprehensive work dealing with a wide array of topics and home-based rituals from candle lighting, kiddush, zemirot, havdalah, sheva berachot, brit milah and more.

Within this work will be found many of the Ravâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thoughts on these and other related topics which, when brought together, form a running commentary containing sections of reshimot and hanhagot recording in one volume the detailed and in-depth explanations and interpretations of the Ravâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal practices, compiled in consultation with those who knew him ďŹ rsthand so as to ensure their complete accuracy. Also included are three essays â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Birkat HaMazon: To Bless the Great and Holy Name,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Zimmun: Eating Together, Blessing G-d as a Communityâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Mitzva of Kiddush: To Sanctify, to Praise, to Redeem.â&#x20AC;?

Within the commentary to Birkat HaMazon, a mitzvah to be found in the weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Parashat Ekev, is this teaching by the Rav based on the pasuk, â&#x20AC;&#x153;For having granted as a heritage to our ancestorsâ&#x20AC;?: â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is interesting to note that this is the only place in the regular liturgy where a Jew

thanks G-d for giving us Eretz Yisrael. We recite Birkat HaTorah every morning for the gift of G-dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s law, but there is no blessing for His Land. In the Amida, the core text of our prayers, we do not mention it. It is only here in Birkat HaMazon that we express our gratitude to G-d for bequeathing to our ancestors the Land of Israel.â&#x20AC;?

Further on in this work we learn more of the Ravâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teachings about the Holy Land in our prayers, in this case, Jerusalem, based on the pasuk, â&#x20AC;&#x153;And may Jerusalem the holy city be rebuiltâ&#x20AC;?: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Talmud (Berachot 48b) explains that the command to thank G-d for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the good land which He gave youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; includes two distinct ideas: The word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;landâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; refers to the entire Land of Israel, and the adjective â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;goodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; alludes speciďŹ cally to Jerusalem. Consequently, the second blessing of Birkat HaMazon elaborates upon the theme of the Land of Israel, while the third blessing focuses on Jerusalem. The Talmud sees this allusion to Jerusalem in the verse based upon the parallel phrase found in Mosesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; petition to G-d to allow him to cross the Jordan in which he pleads to be able to see â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the good mountain and the Levanonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (Devarim 3:25). The rabbis explain that the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;good mountainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is the Temple Mount, and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Levanonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a poetic reference to the Temple itself.â&#x20AC;?

Further on, the Rav explains that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Moses yearned not to see Jerusalem, the political concept, the symbol of Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sovereignty, but rather he prayed to see Jerusalem, the home of G-dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Temple. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Good,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; therefore, doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean prosperous, powerful, or successful; it means holy.â&#x20AC;?

11, 2001, has strengthened calls for stricter gun control laws. Yet in Israel, where many civilians carry ďŹ rearms, questions on how the terrorists acquired their weapons did not spark national debate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Israelis relate to guns totally differently than Americans,â&#x20AC;? said Marc Provisor, director of security projects for One Israel Fund, an organization that provides security equipment to Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley. Most of terrorists who have attacked Israelis in recent months have been neutralized by armed raelis, including police ofďŹ cers, off-duty Issoldiers, and even civilians.

Parashat Ekev is the prime biblical source for Birkat Hamazon, and one of the ďŹ nest commentaries on this segment is to be found in Rabbi Shmuel Goldinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extensive treatment of this subject in the ďŹ fth volume of his work, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unlocking The Torah Textâ&#x20AC;? (Gefen Publishing, OU Press, 2014). In a chapter entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anatomy of a Blessing,â&#x20AC;? Rabbi Goldin writes the Talmudic identiďŹ es one sentence as the source of a fundamental biblical commandment: â&#x20AC;&#x153;From where do we learn a Torah obligation to bless G-d? As it is said: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;And you will eat, and you will be satisďŹ ed, and you will bless the Lord your G-d, concerning the good land that He has given you. Lieberman: Israel wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow Hamas to rearm

By Lilach Shoval, Efrat Forsher A day after the Israel Defense Forces bombed a number of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket attack on the southern Israeli town of Sderot this week, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned that the Jewish state cannot allow the Hamas terror group to arm itself.

Liebermanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s caution also comes just days after Hamas threatened on Sunday to abduct Israeli soldiers, showcasing two â&#x20AC;&#x153;prison cellsâ&#x20AC;? they said was built especially to hold future Israeli captives. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be expected to allow [Hamas] to rob the residents of Gaza,â&#x20AC;? Lieberman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They charge taxes and instead of building buildings, they built tunnels.â&#x20AC;?

Speaking during a tour of the northern border, Lieberman said that Hamas knows whenever it goes into a crisis, Israel, the United Nations or the European Union swoop in to solve the problem. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not interested in solving their own crisis, they just want to build up military power,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seventy percent of their tax revenue goes to building up military power and re-arming. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to take care of the citizens, they only want rockets and tunnels.â&#x20AC;?

Following Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unusually forceful response â&#x20AC;&#x201D; striking dozens of targets across Gaza on Monday â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to the single rocket that landed in Sderot, there have been no further incidents. Senior Israeli military ofďŹ cials said that following the retaliation, Israel was not planning on escalating the tension. That was despite the fact that, on Sunday, Hamasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, held a rally in Rafah honoring three senior operatives, Muhammad Abu Shamalah, Raed al-Attar and Muhammad Barhoum, killed during 2014â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Operation Protective Edge.

Hundreds of armed Hamas terrorists participated in the rally where weapons and rockets were put on display, as were the jail cells. Both â&#x20AC;&#x153;cellsâ&#x20AC;? included Hebrew writing indicating they were intended â&#x20AC;&#x153;for enemy prisoners.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The siege will not prevent our brigades from developing their abilities,â&#x20AC;? Hamas military wing spokesman Abu Obeida remarked, referring to a blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by Israel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It [the siege] will not help the current calm continue. Whoever awakens our wrath will unleash a volcano.â&#x20AC;?

The brigades and the resistance are prepared to protect the Palestinian people, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;we will continue our struggle [against Israel] until we are victorious,â&#x20AC;? he said.

He reiterated the brigadeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s solidarity with â&#x20AC;&#x153;soldiers of the resistance,â&#x20AC;? families of terrorists, Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Following the IAFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response to Mondayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s launched rocket, and assuming that Hamas decides to maintain restraint, the latest clash appears to be over. But a top Israeli military ofďŹ cial declared that the â&#x20AC;&#x153;equation with Gaza has changed.â&#x20AC;?

The timing of the Israeli response appears to suggest that the IDF seized an opportunity to target key Hamas assets. The political echelon stressed that the forceful retaliation was designed to send a clear message that Israel would no longer be as forgiving as it has been in the past. A source said on Monday, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s policy is to prevent a drizzle of rocket ďŹ re.â&#x20AC;?

Hamas ofďŹ cial Mahmoud al-Zahar conďŹ rmed that the organization â&#x20AC;&#x153;remains committed to the truce agreement with the Israeli occupation, as long as they halt the strikes in Gaza.â&#x20AC;? However, he stressed that if the Israeli strikes continue, Hamasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; response will be decisive and forceful. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Israeli occupation has openly signaled that it is not interested in escalation and concluded the confrontation,â&#x20AC;? al-Zahar said.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri echoed al-Zaharâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarks, but added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Zionist occupation will not succeed in imposing

new policies on the resistance.â&#x20AC;?

The SalaďŹ organization Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis, afďŹ liated with the Islamic State group in Gaza, also issued a statement saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just as the children of Gaza are suffering, so will the children of Sderot suffer.â&#x20AC;?

The group warned that the rocket ďŹ re into Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s south will continue, declaring it was not a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hamasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; puppet.â&#x20AC;?

Yet, Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response to Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rocket strike appears to indicate that future rocket attacks will not be tolerated, even if not perpetrated by Hamas, and ofďŹ cials wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fall back into the standard pattern of small-scale retaliations. In all likelihood, the new defense minister will demand harsher, stronger retaliations, particularly if the next rocket causes damage or loss of life.

Meanwhile, in the West Bank, Israeli security forces also raided seven illegal weapons mills in the Hebron and Bethlehem area on Monday night in the largest crackdown of its kind over the last year.

The raids were carried out by ďŹ ve IDF battalions, the militaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Judea and Samaria Division, the Shin Bet security agency and the Judea and Samaria District Police in an effort to root out illegal weapons production and trading.

IDF and Border Police troops found 22 lathes in seven separate weapons factories. Dozens of ďŹ rearms, weapons parts and cartridges were also uncovered in the operation. The lathes and weapons found were seized by security forces.

Two suspects were arrested in connection to production and trade of weapons. One of the suspects is believed to be a top weapons dealer in the area. He is currently being held by the Shin Bet for questioning.

Some of the guns discovered in the raid were foreign models, while others were made in the increasingly sophisticated local weapons mills. Along with the ďŹ rearms, security forces found stolen bullets, knives, handcuffs, nunchucks, ďŹ&#x201A;ak jackets and American army uniforms, according to Israeli media reports.

Riots erupted during the raid but no one was injured, according to the reports.

Since early 2016, the IDF and Shin Bet have uncovered 29 weapons factories, 49 lathes and 300 ďŹ rearms in Judea and Samaria. More than 30 Palestinian terrorist attacks using ďŹ rearms have been carried out against Israelis since the beginning of this year. More than 30 percent of the terrorists came from the Gush Etzion or Hebron regions. Security forces have arrested more than 140 people suspected of producing and trading weapons since January.

Fading Best Buy will shut Rock Tpke store

By Diana Colapietro In a bid to keep the mosquito population at bay in Back Lawrence, Lawrence-based Mosquito Seekers has been spraying the area every three weeks since June, most recently last Monday.

Mosquito Seekers President Richard Gordon said there are two parts to mosquito control â&#x20AC;&#x201D; spraying insecticides and practicing such habits as emptying the lid of a garbage can when rainwater collects in it, avoiding overwatering with sprinklers, cleaning out birdbath water, and keeping swimming pools treated and circulating.

Treatment areas in Lawrence include: end of Lakeside Drive South, Willow Way and Tanglewood Xing, surrounding areas of Sage Pond, end of Yacht Basin Road, end of Stable Lane, Edward Bentley and Oxford Place, end of Daniel Cox Road, Atlantic Avenue and Rutherford Lane, Burton Lane, Club Lane and the pond area between Martin Lane and Lawrence Avenue.

Gordon said his ďŹ rm follows New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations and uses U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-approved insecticide in treating approximately 10 acres of Village of Lawrence-owned properties during mosquito season, which spans from the beginning of May through the end of September. It does not spray close to bodies of water, such as Sage Pond, instead using an organic mosquito control product to ensure ecological safety, he said.

Gordon said that the area does not have the mosquito that carries the Zika virus at this time.

People and pets should stay at least 25 feet away from the area being sprayed at the time of spraying and should stay clear of

treated areas for one hour after the treatment, Gordon said.

The last two treatments for the season are scheduled for Sept. 6 and Sept. 19.

Mosquitoes undergo four stages during their life cycle and three of those include being near or in water, the EPA said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of all disease-transmitting insects, the mosquito is the greatest menace,â&#x20AC;? according to the World Health Organization. The bites can result in skin irritation and mosquitoes can transmit several diseases.
