Hopeful Netanyahu pitches ‘truth to power’ at the UN Hi-tech C’hurst The Village of Cedarhurst is introducing hi-tech parking meters on a portion of Central Avenue between Cedarhurst Avenue and Spruce Street. These new meters — there is one per parking space, without a muni-meter kiosk — take credit cards as well as quarters and can be used to broadcast village notices.

During what Mayor Andrew Parise described as a pilot program, a customer service representative will be on the street to assist motorists. “We believe this is the fairest and friendliest meter on the market and we are committed to providing an exceptional shopping and parking experience,� said village trustee Ari Brown.

Prime Minister Netanyahu told the 69th United National General Assembly on Monday that Hamas and the Islamic State are “branches of the same poisonous tree,� both bent on world domination through terror.

He said that the world’s recognition of this reality — and the common cause Arab states are ďŹ nding with Israel — may set the stage for peace among Israel and its neighbors. “Many have long assumed that an Israeli-Palestinian peace can help facilitate a broader rapprochement between Israel and the Arab world, but these days, I think it may work the other way around,â€? he said.

Comparing the threat posed by the Islamic State to that of a nuclear Iran, Netanyahu said that “it’s one thing to confront militant Islamists on pickup trucks, armed with Kalashnikov ries. It’s another thing to confront militant Islamists armed with weapons of mass destruction.â€?

Saying that he would continue to speak “truth to powerâ€? in defense of the Jewish nation, Netanyahu quoted the prophet Isaiah, “For the sake of Zion, I will not be silent. For the sake of Jerusalem, I will not be still until her justice shines bright and her salvation glows like a aming torch.â€?

Why we all fast on Yom Kippur

Let’s all speak up for Israel, urges OU exec

By Rabbi Avi Berman Executive Director, OU Israel During a recent visit to New York I stayed with friends in Manhattan. Having visited with them numerous times, the doorman in their building knows me. One morning as I was leaving for the day, it was clear he wanted to say something more than “Have a nice day.” I stopped.

What began as a simple question gave me pause to reflect on where we — all of Am Yisrael — are headed in 5775.

His question: “Why is Israel so aggressive to the Palestinians?”

My response included a gallery of pictures from my iPhone. Pictures and videos showing the amount of ammunition Hamas had in Gaza. Pictures of tunnels that begin under a kitchen sink. Body bags that are moving because the “victims” are still alive. Palestinians shooting rockets at Israel with children standing right next to them, and much more.

I explained that Israel tries its best not to target civilians but as the pictures and videos demonstrate, it is not easy when Hamas terrorists shoot while surrounded by children. He was touched but more than anything he felt deceived.

“They don’t show us any of this on CNN or any of the other news channels here,” he said. He asked me to forward the pictures so he could show them to friends who are Moslem and/or pro-Palestinian.

Later in the day he sent me a text message. “Thanks a lot for changing the way we American people see your world.

Our media only shows us the bad and blames Israel. My humble apologies.”

During the afternoon I kept thinking about the fact that here is a non-Jewish American whose main news sources are CNN and Fox News. All he sees is how terrible Israel is.

In response to this reality, verses from Avinu Malkenu (Our Father, Our King) kept coming to mind: “Our Father,

Our King, cancel the plans of those who hate us. Our Father, Our King, thwart the counsel of our enemies.”

This summer’s Operation Protective Edge created a disturbing phenomenon. In addition to outright anti-Semitism, it often resulted in a situation where Jewish people who support Israel felt uncomfortable. All it took was a 15 minute conversation and photo gallery for a very good man to see the truth.

What this innocent exchange taught me is that a worthy goal for the New Year is to become ambassadors for Israel.

Speak the truth with those special people you see every day but may think differently than you do.

If we do this, together we can create an outburst of grass roots activism. Self-starting initiatives. Volunteering in Israel and abroad. In social media and in person. Start by learning the facts from Israeli websites including the IDF (idf.il/ English/).

It deserves as least as much time as CNN and Fox News.

The 9/11 lunatics had profound motivations, and the murderers of my son, Daniel Pearl, had very compelling “grievances.”

In the past few weeks we have seen with our own eyes that Hamas and ISIS have grievances, too, and, they, too, are lining up for operatic productions with the Met. There is nothing more enticing to a wouldbe terrorist than the prospect of broadcasting his “grievences” in Lincoln Center, the icon of American culture.

Yet civilized society, from the time of our caveman ancestors, has learned to protect itself by codifying right from wrong, separating

the holy from the profane, distinguishing that which deserves the sound of orchestras from that which deserves our unconditional revulsion. The Met has smeared this distinction and thus betrayed their contract with society.

I submit to you that choreographing an operatic drama around criminal pathology is not an artistic prerogative, but a blatant betrayal of public trust.

We do not stage operas for rapists and child molesters, and we do not compose symphonies for penetrating the minds of ISIS executioners. No! Composer John Adams, some sides do not have two sides, and what was done to Leon Klinghoffer has one side only.

What we are seeing here is not an artistic expression that challenges the limits of morality, but a moral deformity that challenges the limits

of the art. This opera is not about the mentality of deranged terrorists, but about the judgment of our arts directors. The New York Met has squandered humanity’s greatest treasure — our moral compass, our sense of right and wrong, and, most sadly, our reverence for music as a noble expression of the human spirit.

We might be able some day to forgive the Met for decriminalizing brutal minds, but [not] for poisoning our music, for turning our best violins and our iconic concert halls into megaphones for excusing evil.

Mr. Peter Gelb [Met general manager], let me repeat what I wrote to you on Thursday: “May G-d give you the courage to admit that this was a hasty, shortsighted decision that can be reversed.” May Danny’s last words strengthen your heart to say, “I erred.”

In joining you today to protest the New York Metropolitan Opera production of this opera, I echo the silenced voice of my son, Daniel Pearl, and the silenced voices of other victims of terror, including James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and including thousands of men, women and children who were murdered, maimed or left heartbroken by the new menace of our generation, a menace of savagery that the Met has decided to elevate to a normative, two-sided status, worthy of artistic expression.

Located at the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Mill Road, the 70,000-squarefoot site includes Foodtown Supermarket, Bagel Boss, Matty’s Toy Stop, Carvel and several other stores and restaurants. It was built in 1959.

60 women learn CPR at Achiezer training This past Sunday morning, Tzom Gedaliah, nearly 60 women filled the Achiezer office on Central Avenue, to partake in the ongoing community-wide health training series presented by Achiezer and Hatzalah.

Feeding off the success of previous classes as well as an increase in demand, CPR and choking procedures were taught to all attendees in two separate rooms — one in English, and one in Spanish for caregivers.

It was only one month ago that Achiezer received a dramatic email from an emotional mom, whose choking baby had literally been saved by a Spanish housekeeper who had learned these procedures when Achiezer’s previously offered this class.

Since I began my tenure as publisher of The Jewish Star over one year ago, I’ve been regularly heartened by the warm reception given to me in our communities, and by how many people have told me of The Star’s valued role.

ne of my favorite tasks each week is assemblying the “Star Flashback� column that appears on the right side of this page. The Jewish Star’s focus has evolved over its 12 years, but many of the stories we covered throughout are still relevant today.

This week, for instance, “Flashbackâ€? recaps a story from 2003 about a Woodburgh teenager who made aliyah right after graduating from HAFTR High School. That 18-year-old, Jonathan Mosery, would become a spokesperson in the ofďŹ ce of Prime Minister Netanyahu and, this summer, was a spokesman for the Israel ministry of defense during Operation Protective Edge.

And then there are our activist high schools; students and faculty from Rambam Mesivta are pictured on this week’s front page protesting the Klinghoffer opera at the Met. They regularly show up in “Flashback� because they have been, throughout our 12 years, a voice for truth and justice, speaking “truth to power� as Mr. Netanyahu did at the U.N. this week.

Our Long Island communities and our people contribute greatly to kidush Hashem, to the Jewish people, and to the land and state of Israel. ith Yom Kippur just a day away and Sukkos next week, this week’s essay will bring to your attention several books and essays devoted to the themes of teshuvah, repentance in the Jewish tradition.

Rabbi Yosef Deutsch concludes his excellent series of compilations of Talmudic and Midrashic sources on the holiday themed books from the Bible with his take on the Book of Jonah (“Let My Nation Be Warned,” Feldheim). In a story-like style, he details the action of this work with a dramatic flair that almost rivals the original.

Rabbi Deutsch notes: “Over the centuries the book of Jonah has become one of the most familiar of the Bible because it is recited in its entirety as the haftarah every Yom kippur during the Minchah service, before the Ne’ilah prayer begins.

This is the most auspicious moment of the holy day, when we have our last chance to repent and to repair our relationship with G-d.

Therefore we read the story of Jonah, which speaks of the importance of repentance.

“We are reminded that it is impossible to escape from G-d and to thwart His will. Jonah suffered greatly because he attempted to avoid fulfilling his mission. We must fulfill ours if we want to be spared negative consequences. The Chafetz Chaim explains that sinners sometimes fail to repent because they don’t believe they can really change and be forgiven. But in the end the sinner must pay for his misdeeds, and if he doesn’t repent, he will suffer.”

The author goes on to answer the following questions: Who exactly was Jonah, and what made him attempt to refuse a divinely commanded mission? Did Jonah really believe that he could really avoid this command? And, why do we read this book specifically on Yom Kippur? Read this work and you will find out the whys.

Another take on the Jonah saga can be found in an excellent essay penned by Rabbi Eliyahu Safran of the Orthodox Union entitled, “Jonah and ISIS.” Centering on the recent report that ISIS destroyed the tomb of Jonah, Rabbi Safran writes that the act railed “against G-d’s mercy and message.”

In destroying Jonah’s tomb, Rabbi Safran continues, ISIS sought “to destroy the hope

that G-d brings to the hopeless. That the tomb had been located in Mosul, the modern name for Nineveh, adds poignancy and irony to the wickedness of these people. Even more, it is good to bear in mind that Jonah’s tomb was a shrine to Muslims as well as others. Certainly, ISIS would have preferred to have killed the prophet than just his tomb, but even these murderous barbarians cannot destroy G-d’s message and hope.”

Another observation can be read in an essay entitled, “The Prophet Jonah: Leadership and Taking Responsibility,” by Dr. Einat Ramon of Jerusalem. Her teachings are most worthy of your attention.

The latest issue of “Kolmus: the Journal of Torah & Jewish Thought” (Mishpacha Magazine) contains an interesting essay by Osher Chaim Leverne, the director of Orah in London, entitled, “Yonah: On Wings of Teshuvah,” which develops for us a deeper meaning behind Jonah’s activities and behavior.

Additionally, the Torah To-Go series features an essay entitled, “The Failed Teshuva of Nineveh” by Rabbi Zvi Romm, the distinguished rav of the Bialystoker Shul on New York’s Lower East Side. Lastly, we have a new book of lively essays by Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Ohev Sholom The National Shul in Washington which is ironically entitled, “Food For The Spirit: Inspirational Lessons from the Yom Kippur Service” (Urim Publishing). Rabbi Herzfeld writes: “One of the most powerful moments of our Yom Kippur liturgy is the recitation of the Yizkor prayers, when we recall with affection those no longer with us. Is there anyone who wouldn’t want a second chance to speak with departed loved ones? Is there anyone who wouldn’t want another moment to just sit and hold their hands? To just sing with them or sit together with them around a Shabbat table?” $ 3HUVRQDO 1RWH At this time of year it is proper to consider those who are no longer a part of our daily lives. And even if you are not Yizkor-bound, think of those friends who passed away this past year, think of their families, children, grandchildren, of the widows and widowers, who still need the reach of your friendship.

That, too, is the message of Yom Kippur. Just as we ask of G-d to remember us, it behooves us to remember others.

Avinu Malkeinu … Our Father, Our King RABBI AVI BILLET PARSHA OF THE WEEK

I

n one of his Yom Kippur addresses, Rabbi Joseph Hertz expressed that “Avinu Malkeinu Chatanu L’fanekha” is the prayer most reflective of our Yom Kippur goals. In it, we recognize a few very important truths about our relationship with G-d, and about ourselves.

“Avinu” means “Our Father.” First we are recognizing, as Rabbi Hertz put it, “We can never cease being children of our father in heaven, just as we can ever cease being children of our earthly parents. Whether we are deserving of G-d’s love or whether we are not deserving of His love, He remains our father.”

The Torah tells us in Devarim 23:6 that

G-d turned Bilaam’s curse into a blessing, “Because Hashem your G-d loves you.” It doesn’t matter that the Bnei Yisrael had sinned before, or that they were about to sin with Baal Pe’or. Things may go very wrong, but G-d, father in heaven, loves us.

He is also “Malkeinu.” Though He is our father and loves us, this doesn’t take away from His being our king he will not “permit the wanton breaking of His laws to go unpunished.” G-d’s love is combined with G-d’s Law. “There is an everlasting disctinction between right and wrong … [between] thou shalts and thou shalt nots which are absolute and imperative.”

There are countless parables in Jewish lore of a King whose son sinned, causing the king to make an example of his own son.

Shaul Hamelekh (King Saul) almost killed his own son Yonatan! The story in Shmuel I:14 is incredible. Yonatan and a friend bring about the salvation for the Jewish people

through a very decisive battle they wage essentially singlehandedly – while unaware that Shaul had declared that at the threat of death no one was to eat until the battle was over. After incredible military feats, in a fit of exhaustion, Yonatan ate a dabble of honey to rejuvenate himself. When Shaul found out about it, Yonatan was only spared because the people came to his defense arguing, “Will you kill Yonatan, who brought about this great salvation to us?”

A father who is a king also has laws. And the laws must be followed – even though the father loves his son. If his son can get away with anything, there will not be any respect for the kingship and the monarchy falls apart.

The statement of the prayer concludes, “Chatanu L’fanekha” (we have sinned before You).

The prophet Isaiah said (5:20), “Woe to those who say of the evil that it is good and

of the good that it is evil, who present darkness as light and light as darkness, who present bitter as sweet and sweet as bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and in their own estimation, of profound understanding.”

We live in a time where there is rationalization and justification for everything we do or choose to not do. It is one thing to make choices of how to conduct oneself privately, it is an entirely other matter to blast one’s choices and rejections of tradition on the internet, justifying all with much less than a halakhic argument, and merely a “rational” or “emotional” argument.

Not everything in Rabbinic Judaism is rational, not everything has a full reason or makes perfect sense. But we, the faithful, are committed to making a go of a system that has survived for thousands of years. It may have undergone certain evolutions, and it Continued on page 16

om HaKippurim: The day of atonement. That is how we usually translate it, but is that what it really means? I heard a remarkable story this summer, in the midst of all the fighting in Gaza, though in all honesty I have not troubled to corroborate the story.

Apparently a group of ultra-Orthodox residents from Bnei Brak came to a field near the Gaza strip to harvest wheat for Pesach.

Every summer they search for wheat ripe enough to harvest in August — when the sun dries the wheat most intensely as part of the process in producing shmura matzah (matzo made from wheat specially guarded against

moisture to prevent it from rising and becoming unleavened). The wheat is then stored till its use in baking matzos in the spring.

Since this is a Shemittah (sabbatical) year, they needed to harvest enough for two years’ worth of matzos. At Kibbutz Sufa, right next to the border with Gaza, they found a large field sown in mid-January (apparently a rare occurrence) with 2,000 acres of green wheat — was exactly what they needed.

With Operation Protective Edge’s air campaign under way, they could see the pillars of smoke over Gaza, and the Israeli air force hitting back against the Hamas missile launchers, but were nonetheless able to harvest the wheat and load it onto trucks for the cleaning and storage process in the plant located further north.

Two days later, in what is now a welldocumented event, 13 terrorists, armed to the teeth, emerged from a tunnel which led from the Gaza strip and opened into the

wheat fields of Kibbutz Sufa. The terrorists had been counting on emerging unnoticed amidst the tall wheat stalks all of which had just been cut down by the Bnei Brak Matzoh bakers. As such, they were immediately spotted by the Israeli army and were prevented from launching what would have been a horrendous terrorist attack intended to hit nearby homes all at once.

Indeed, one could say a lot of Jewish lives were protected by the mitzvoth of Shemittah this summer. aparah is most often assumed to mean atonement, implying that this special day helps us to atone, or gain forgiveness, for past mistakes and transgressions.

But let’s take a closer look at the root kofer (made up of three Hebrew letters kuf, peh and resh).

The first appearance of this root in the Torah is found in the story of Noach who is told

by G-d to cover the Ark (inside and out) with

K

kofer or pitch (Genesis 6:14) as a protective layer against the flood waters soon to come.

Later, Yaakov attempts to appease his brother Esau who is approaching with a large army by sending presents, saying “Ulai achapra panav be’mincha” (“Perhaps I will appease him with gifts”). (Genesis 32:20).

Here too, Yaakov is hoping these gifts will protect him from Esau’s wrath.

And later, in the book of Exodus (16:14) the manna is described as falling on the ground as a thin protective layer, “ke’kfor al ha’aretz.”

Based on these and other sources, Rav Menachem Leibtag suggests that kaparah is actually a form of protective covering. As such, Yom Hakippurm would be the day when we are achieving protection. (As an example, the kaporet in the Tabernacle is the lid which protects the contents of the Aron or ark.)

Obama misunderstands Rosh Hashana’s meaning JEFF DUNTZ POLITICS TO GO

A

s he has done every year in his Presidency, the day before Rosh Hashanah Barack Obama sent a special holiday message to the Jewish community. Again, the message ignores the meaning of the holiday and its special message to Americans: that progressive politics are antithetical to the teaching of personal responsibility embedded in Rosh Hashanah.

It’s not that the president’s words were inappropriate, as he spoke about charity and introspection that are indeed a major part of all Jewish holidays, but he missed a key theme: The High Holiday period is all about personal responsibility.

Even the method of atoning for our sins goes against progressive values. Jews are taught that our Maker is not a big massive government that will fix everything. For earthly-type mistakes we must first approach the people we harmed to request forgiveness and, if necessary, make restitution. Then we

must discover what led us to behave that way and correct the flaw catalyzing such behavior. Only then can we approach G-d for absolution.

It’s not that G-d cannot fix everything, but his direct involvement would destroy the delicate balance he set up during Creation.

The Creation narrative in Genesis explains that man is created in G-d’s image — a point that teaches us that just as G-d acts as a free being without prior restraint to do right and wrong, so does man. The rabbis explain this, saying, “All is in the hands of Heaven except the fear of Heaven” (Talmud, Berachot 33b).

In other words, G-d provides our options, but it is up to man to pick between good and bad.

Free will is the divine version of limited government. G-d picks the winning direction but does not choose winners or losers. We are not divinely perfect nor are we meant to be, but we ought to be closer to that perfect divine-ness when we leave this world than when we entered it.

Because we all are created in G-d’s image, we believe that all men are created equal.

This does not mean what progressives tell us, that when it comes to talents, looks, preferences, or natural abilities we are all equal.

Nor does it mean we all should have the same

big screen TV, wireless Internet, cookies and cream ice cream, or savings account balance.

What is actually meant by “all men are created equal” is that we all have the same ability to be infinitely good or wicked; we all have the same ability to forge a relationship with G-d regardless of our intellectual capability, social background, physical strength, golf handicap wealth, etc. During the High Holidays, we evaluate how well we have used the “lot we have been given” for good deeds and to forging that heavenly relationship.

Unlike progressivism, Jewish tradition respects economic success, so long as it is obtained honestly, and proper respect is shown for the social responsibility that comes with it. That social responsibility is different than what President Obama and his supporters would describe. It is a personal duty and a job for the community led by its religious leaders, not the government. The Hebrew word for charity, tzedaka, has in its root the word tzedek, which means righteous, because we are taught that personally giving charity is one of the keys to being righteous.

Some of the ancient sages have suggested when G-d created the world, sparks of his holiness were spread across the earth. Every time that a person makes the choice of per-

forming a righteous act (such as giving charity) one of those sparks is purified and sent back to heaven. Through that process we become closer to G-d.

President Obama, the progressive Democrats, and the nanny-statists of all political persuasion take away that choice. They believe that if the choice were to be left up to the individual, that individual would do the wrong thing. Therefore government needs to take an omnipotent G-d-like role and control our decisions.

People who support progressivism are rejecting the free will given to us by our Maker and handing it over to the government. Thus they are retarding their spiritual development, and as a result, canceling an opportunity to get closer to G-d. In a progressive society, the ten Days of Awe are not necessary; there is no introspection needed, because government makes their choices for them.

In an English dictionary the word sin is defined as: any act regarded as such a transgression, esp. a willful or deliberate violation of some religious or moral principle.

There is no word in Hebrew matching that definition. Instead, the word used on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is chet. It is an arContinued on page 16

Allies and adversaries in the Middle East BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT Who are we at war with in the Middle East?

We are at war with the Islamic State terrorist organization in Iraq and Syria, but we should appreciate that this is not the only enemy. … There are other local forces with whom we have separate, equally complex, and potentially very dangerous conflicts.

The Second World War provides a good historical example of what I mean. From 1941 onwards, the Soviet Union was an ally of Britain, which had been fighting Nazi Germany solo for the previous two years, and the United States, which entered the war following the Japanese attack on Pearl Har-

bor. But in the decades prior to that capitalist-communist military alliance, the Soviet Union was very much an enemy, perceived

by European leaders especially as the main threat to the stability of western democracy.

Only with the rise of Nazism did the Soviet threat retreat into the background. But even then, there was an awareness that once our business with Hitler’s regime was done, we would remain fundamentally at loggerheads with the Soviet Union. That was why World War II segued rapidly into the Cold War that dominated international relations for the next half-century.

A similar pattern is observable with Islamic State. The coalition that the U.S. has assembled to fight this barbaric scourge is, much like the Anglo-American-Soviet coalition of the 1940s, based upon an immediate coincidence of interest. But many of the powers involved with it should not be described as friends. Some of them — particu-

larly those with an indirect, ambiguous role — might in fact become declared enemies in the not-too-distant future.

I include in that category states like Turkey and Qatar. Turkey is not a central actor in the war against Islamic State, having elected not to join the other 10 Middle Eastern countries that assembled in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, earlier this month to announce the coalition with the Americans. Turkish leaders say their principal aim is to provide humanitarian aid to the thousands of refugees that have poured across their country’s borders, though there is widespread agreement that the Turks are engaged in supporting the military operation from behind the scenes. Similarly, Qatar is playing what the Reuters news agency described as a “supporting role,” which means that it will not be visibly deploying military force against Islamic State, in stark contrast to Arab neighbors like Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain,

all of whom have participated in bombing runs against Islamic State positions in Syria in recent days.

I also include Iran in that category. Iran, again, is not a formal participant in the U.S.led coalition, but Washington has been keen to emphasize that Tehran shares western disquiet at the rise of Islamic State. And Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif was quick to point out, in media interviews during his visit to New York for the U.N. General Assembly, that his country had been praised

by Iraqi Kurdish leaders for providing them with weapons in their darkest hour of need.

“Iran is the only country in the region that is capable of helping in the maintenance of stability,” Zarif told The National Interest’s Jacob Heilbrunn, presumably with some relish.

The plain fact is that any calculations we make in Iraq and Syria will need to factor in the Qatar-Turkey axis (the main state-backContinued on page 16

It should also be an incredible message to the 297 plaintiffs in the case — who were either injured themselves or whose family members were killed in 24 different Hamas attacks during the Second Intifada — that we recognize their suffering and losses, as well as the travails of all other terrorism survivors, victims, and victims’ family members whose claims derive from other acts of Palestinian violence not yet been addressed in a court of law.

The Brooklyn court’s decision also has more than just legal and financial implications. We must focus on the human impact of terror on surviving individuals and the families — the physical and emotional scars they will carry for the rest of their lives.

How can one forget the aftermath of a bomb detonated in a crowded bus or café, bullets flying through a car windshield, or a rocket crashing through an apartment building? What it is like to feel the pain of a bullet entering your body, believing your life is ending, coming home to babies who don’t recognize you, or living with family members and friends who don’t understand that you aren’t the same person you were before an attack (even though you look the same)? What it is like to lose your child or parent or spouse, and to see friends cross the street to avoid talking to you because they don’t know what to say to you? How does one come back to life, and maybe even find light at the end of the tunnel,

after a loved one was killed by terrorism?

Over the past decade, I interviewed terrorism survivors and their families while compiling my new book, “Living Beyond Terrorism: Israeli Stories of Hope and Healing” (Gefen, 2014). I heard the voices and passions of otherwise ordinary people performing ordinary activities — Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Druze riding in buses, dining in restaurants, shopping in markets, studying at college, visiting hotels, or walking on the street — who suddenly become victims of suicide bombings, shooting attacks, and rocket attacks.

I was privileged to hear, learn, and tell the stories of 16 of the plaintiffs from the recent Arab bank case. They were victims of some of the worst Palestinian terror attacks in the history of Israel, including the Sbarro pizzeria bombing in Jerusalem, the Park Hotel Passover Massacre in Netanya, the Mike’s Place bombing in Tel Aviv, and the Hebrew University cafeteria bombing. While these attacks

have been etched into the memory of most Israelis and many Americans, the experiences of the plaintiffs in this case are more than a memory, they are the events that shaped the rest of their lives. For the plaintiffs, the verdict was likely a significant step in their emotional journey of healing and trying to make their voices heard. With the court’s decision, it’s clear they have been heard.

As we approach Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, let’s remember those who have fallen due to acts of terror and pray for those who have survived, and for their extended families. Let them hear our voices and understand that we have not forgotten them, and that we will continue to remember and take action. Let’s pray that those still waiting for their voices to be heard are indeed heard, and let’s hope and pray those who have perpetrated, abetted, and defended terrorism will take this court decision seriously and finally say, “I’m sorry.”

I

had ambivalent feelings writing a baseball article about Derek Jeter right before Yom Kippur. I wondered if it was somewhat sacrilegious to address mundane topics such as sports during this holy, introspective time. I determined, however, that focusing on Jeter’s behavior was uplifting to me as I aspire to act with a healthier measure of derech eretz (fundamental respect for the community and society at large).

When Jeter signed for Little League, his parents created a contract whose terms included respecting himself, his teammates and others, and being a good role model for his younger sister. The ďŹ rst rule was that family came ďŹ rst. Jeter fulďŹ lled the substance of this contract through his last moments on the ďŹ eld, treating his teammates and adversaries as his family During an interview after his last game, asked what he hoped his legacy would be, he said, “You want to be known as someone who had respect for the game, respect for your teammatesâ€? as well as respect for others associated with the game including fans and media. His manager Joe Girardi tearfully called it “a blessing to play alongside and manage Derek Jeter.â€?

My husband Jerry, a team captain during his high school and college years, has often told me that you get to know so much about a person by how he plays the game and treats his teammates. Perhaps Jeter’s last moments on the ďŹ eld could serve as the paradigm for

who he was. When He was leaving the ďŹ eld for a pinch runner (after hitting a single during his last game) he unexpectedly stopped by the mound and said to Red Sox pitchen Clay Buchholz. “I know this is kind of odd, but I just wanted to say I’ve enjoyed competing against you over the years.â€? They shook hands and he continued on to the Yankee dugout to a thunderous ovation. He explained later, “I had an opportunity to speak with everyone on the Boston team but not him because he was warming up, so I just took a brief moment to tell him.â€? Later Buchholz said “he’s done everything the right way. ‌ It was surprising at ďŹ rst, but at the same time, that’s why he’s Derek Jeter.â€?

Jeter is known for hitting, base running, ďŹ elding and leadership. He is a 14 time AllStar, 5 time World Series champion, World Series MVP, 5 time Gold Glove, 5 time Silver Slugger, 2 time Hank Aaron award winner and Yankee captain from 2003-2014. One thing he failed at was ejections. In his 20year career he was never ejected.

He is also known for his good looks, charisma, and his association with beautiful actresses and models he dated in the past.

But the one attribute that impresses me the most is the ability he had to remain digniďŹ ed and classy through his entire career. Former teammates, trainers and managers all agree he was always ďŹ rst to show up and last to leave. And if you look back over his career

we should act in any interpersonal situation is to ask and then emulate how Derek Jeter might act in an analogous situation.

Derek Jeter, you might have played your last inning as a Yankee, but your legacy as the consummate gentleman and role model will resonate in our homes this new year and for many years to come.

Since Derek Jeter was the Yankee captain from 2003 till 2014 — and the toast of our New York — I thought this recipe was ďŹ tting.

Ingredients 8 large eggs 6-1/2 tablespoons sugar 2-3/4 cups heavy cream 1-1/4 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon 5 ounces unsalted butter 20 ounces Cap’n Crunch cereal 14 slices challah or white bread Directions Place the cereal in a plastic and gently crush making sure the pieces aren’t too small.

Place the cereal in a large pan or mixing bowl so the bread can be generously coated. Combine eggs, sugar, cream, vanilla, and spices in a large bowl. It will have the consistency of custard. Soak each slice of Bread in wet ingredients, till evenly saturated, including the crust. Coat in Cap’n Crunch mixture and lightly press onto each side, and around the crust. Place on parchment paper until all slices are coated. Heat 2 tbs. butter in large skillet, then gently place slices in pan; two at a time. Add more butter as needed. Cook three minutes per side. Serve immediately, keep in a warming drawer until serving or make ahead of time and reheat on low temperature or in warming drawer till thoroughly heated.

BBQ for HANC kindergarten A fun family barbecue opened the school year for kindergarten students at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County’s Samuel & Elizabeth Bass Golding Elementary School, in West Hempstead.

The civil court decision will now proceed to the damages phase, in which a decision could spell significant compensation for the roughly 300 victims of terrorism and their relatives who filed the lawsuit.

But more tellingly, the case, which asserted violations by the Arab Bank of the U.S. Anti-Terrorism Act, could affect policies by banks worldwide.

“Congress adopted the Anti-Terrorism Act for the specific purpose of giving American victims and their families the opportunity to bring litigation against terrorists and their funders,” said one of the plaintiffs’ attorneys, Richard Heideman, an international human rights lawyer with the Washington, D.C.based firm Heideman Nudelman and Kalik.

Now, “every terrorist group, every terrorist supporter, and every funder of terrorism is on notice that the U.S. judicial system will protect the right of the American victims to seek recovery, hold those [terrorists] fully accountable, and gain justice through our American courts,” Heideman said.

After 10 years of back-and-forth litigation, a jury unanimously agreed that the Arab Bank knowingly provided material support and funding to individuals and organizations that led to 24 terrorist attacks

by Hamas in Israel from 2001 to 2004.

Numerous cases were consolidated under the lead case, Linde et al. v. Arab Bank

PLC, which was filed in 2004. Over the five-week trial, attorneys for the plaintiffs proved that the Arab Bank turned a blind eye to accounts of well-known Hamas members, such as the group’s founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, and Lebanon-based spokesman Osama Hamdan, as well as Hamaslinked aid organizations like the Saudi Committee for the Support of the Intifada al Quds. According to court documents, the Saudi Committee, under the guise of a humanitarian organization, paid out amounts of around $5,300 to the families of suicide bombers. In total, the bank disbursed up to $100 million to the organization.

According to Heideman, a portion of the funding was provided through front organizations operating as “Zakat” (Islamic charity) entities—disbursing funds, including cash payments, through 22 branches in the West Bank and Gaza. Often, these cash payments were given to individuals who were not account holders.

The bank, which is seeking to reverse the verdict in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, argued that its branch managers checked all individuals against appropriate blacklists, such as those produced by the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and that the individuals and organizations provided with funds were cleared.

One of the plaintiffs’ witnesses was Matthew Levitt of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, who told the jury that the OFAC list was just “one tool in the toolkit and that banks are responsible to know their own customers and know the nature of the terrorist organizations that exist.”

The plaintiffs argued that under the Know Your Customer (KYC) provisions of

the U.S. Patriot Act of 2001, banks operating in the United States have the responsibility to conduct their own additional research into their clients.

Another one of the plaintiffs’ attorneys, Peter Raven-Hansen, a professor of law and co-director of the national security and U.S. foreign relations law program at George Washington University, said that the jury saw convincing evidence that the bank knew that its customers were terrorists despite passing the “OFAC list filter.”

“In 1999, the United States government designated al-Qaeda as a foreign terrorist organization and put it on the OFAC list,” Raven-Hansen told JNS.org. “But suppose in November 2001, Osama bin Laden comes into your bank and seeks to withdraw $100,000 from his account. And the tellers say, ‘My God, that’s Osama bin Laden, I’d know him anywhere.’ And they run to their manager and they say, ‘Can we give this man $100,000?’ And the manager says, ‘Let me check the OFAC list. I don’t see Osama bin Laden’s name there so go right ahead.’”

On the other hand, according to RavenHansen, if bin-Laden’s driver came in and asked for the money, the bank could make a better case that they didn’t know, but the driver would have to be properly vetted under KYC rules.

“So the question here is, are the people that the Arab Bank paid more like Osama bin Laden or more like his driver? And the answer is they’re clearly a bunch of bin Ladens,” he said. “It simply offends common sense, and obviously offended the jury, to think that the bank didn’t know who these people were, even though they weren’t listed by name on any list.”

HALB Children from the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach’s Lev Chana Early Childhood Center Kindergarten and Nursery 4 enjoyed a special visit from Rabbi Yair Oppen, Sofer, Baal Tokaya and owner of Oppen Scrolls in Cedarhurst.

The children sat entranced as Rabbi Oppen stood before a table crammed with shofrot from many different kosher animals.

He explained that it is the twisted horn of an ayal which is the preferred one we use to blow during Chodesh Elul and on Rosh Hashanah, because it reminds us of the horns of the animal that Avraham Aveinu pulled free from the bush. This Shofar reminds Hashem how Avraham listened to Him and loved doing His mitzvot.

Rabbi Oppen demonstrated how twisted horns also remind us that we need to be humble — bent over — when we daven to Hakodesh Baruch Hu. The children were able to tell Rabbi Oppen that we blow the Shofar to tell us to wake up and do Teshuva and Mitzvot, and to be aware that the King of the Universe, Hashem, is coming.

Midreshet Shalhevet Students were “glowing� with happiness as they returned from their color-themed Midreshet Shalhevet Shabbaton at Camp Seneca.

The girls arrived at camp on Friday afternoon and participated in a schoolwide “wild and wackyâ€? scavenger hunt (congratulations to the Juniors on their ďŹ rst place ďŹ nish!).

Each girl was given a Shalhevet Shabbaton sweatshirt and received tie-dye to create their own sweatshirt design.

Shabbat began with a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat as the girls sang melodiously together. The Friday night seudah was ďŹ lled with singing and dancing and a heartening dvar torah given over by 11th grader Becky Marks.

Afterwards, faculty members participated in a panel discussion during the oneg in which the students were able to ask any questions that came to mind. Some of the girls stayed up till the wee hours of the morning singing along with Coach Ilona Diamond.

Following davening Shabbat morning, Tanach teacher Mrs. Feder delivered an inspirational dvar torah. The girls enjoyed a hot kiddush before breaking into grade wide sessions with different faculty members to discuss life after high school and overcoming social pressures. The seudah was once again ďŹ lled with ruach and a moving dvar torah by 11th grader Dina Farkas. The girls then played an exciting game of Headbands where they had to guess Shalhevet-related words and ďŹ nd their match.

Seudat Shlishit was uplifting as the entire school sat and sang harmoniously together.

After an incredible Shabbat, Shalhevet announced its participation in the Shabbos Project and discussed the importance of keeping Shabbat and reaching out to our fellow Jews. The students then dressed up in neon for the Melave Malka which featured delicious food, music, and dancing. Thanks are extended to Gary Wallin for coming up to Seneca to entertain with upbeat music.

The night culminated in a senior-only bonďŹ re where the students reminisced about their favorite Shalhevet memories while roasting marshmallows.

Sunday morning, as the girls tiredly boarded the buses, their smiles were still radiating. “The Shabbaton ďŹ lled me with an overwhelming love for my grade and for my school,â€? said junior Tamar Yastrab.

Freshman Dina Seidenberg shared that “it was great getting to know everyone better and becoming better friends.�

5Towns Shabbos Project makes challah, music The Jewish Star staff World Jewry will unite on Shabbos Parshas Noach, Oct. 24 and 25, when Jews keep Shabbos together in an enhanced way, inviting less observant friends, neighbors and colleagues to experience its beauty and traditions.

The Shabbos Project started in South Africa, an effort sparked

by Chief Rabbi Dr. Warren Goldstein, in which thousands of Jews throughout that country observed Shabbos together.

This year it is exploding to 340 cities across the world, with over 1,200 partnering shuls so far.

In the Five Towns area, 11 local shuls and nine Jewish day schools and yeshivot are involved so far, organizers report.

Rabbi Ya’akov Trump is spearheading two major events in the area — “The Great Challah Bake,” on Thursday evening Oct. 23, which will begin at 7:30 pm at the Sands Atlantic Beach, 1395 Beech St. One-thousand women are expected to attend, and are encouraged to bring friends who have never baked challah before.

Eitan Katz will provide musical entertainment.

Motzei Shabbos, locals are urged to bring their guests to a Maccabeat Havdalah concert, starting at 9 pm at Congregation Beth Sholom, 390 Broadway in Lawrence.

The purpose of the High Holidays is for each of us to determine why we missed the mark. The answer cannot come from someone else or from the government.

In the same vein, the Hebrew word commonly translated as repentance, teshuvah, actually means return. In other words, we have returned to the correct path. Its true meaning is much more than just repentance, which implies feeling sorry for what you have done. Teshuvah involves changing what it is inside you that led you to go off-course (a concept that many politicians should adopt).

The Rabbis tell us the only way to do teshuvah is by undergoing personal reflection and personal choice (as opposed to governmental regulation). G-d gives us a road map in the Torah, Prophets, Psalms and other sacred

The culmination of this day is the shofar blast at the end of the Neilah prayer when we cry out, “Hashem hu ha’Elokim” (“the Lord is G-d”), the same words uttered by the Jewish people who have just witnessed the fire coming from the heavens in the time of Elijah the prophet, and the same goal laid out by King Solomon in his speech dedicating the newly built Beit haMikdash (First Temple) (“Le’maan data kol amei ha’Artez ki Hashem Hu Ha Elokim”).

Hashem represents the name of G-d which is beyond our comprehension, the G-d of boundless mercy we cannot fathom. The root letters yud heh vav and heh forming the same letters as hayah hoveh Ve’yehiyeh, representing the idea that G-d was, is and always be an idea simply beyond our capacity to fully comprehend.

Like the mercy we receive which knows no bounds. We cannot possibly have earned, in this lifetime, all the good Hashem has bestowed upon us.

Elokim, on the other hand is said to represent justice or din. The idea that we get what we deserve, that good merits reward, and evil warrants punishment. A life equation much more easily comprehended.

We think that sometimes G0d is just and sometimes merciful. But in truth, G-d is not ‘sometimes’ anything. By definition, whatever G-d is, G-d always is; so G-d must

texts; he even gave us coaches (Rabbis), but to truly change ourselves and ultimately to truly change the world, we have to discover for ourselves the best way to read the road map.

In its purest essence, the Jewish High Holiday period is the antithesis of the various forms of liberal and progressive government.

We learn from the Ten Days of Awe that we must be honest with ourselves and rely on our own introspection to find the right path. We learn that while G-d may be evaluating the path we take, and He provides a road map to the right way, he will not make the decisions for us. Progressive and leftist governments remove free will; they make the decisions, determine the path, eliminate the need for introspection and the opportunity for each one of us to find those sparks of G-d in the world.

What those types of governments take from their citizens is the greatest joy of all — finding for themselves the path that will draw them closer to G-d. Finding that path is what Rosh Hashanah is all about.

Allies, adversaries…

Continued from page 8 ers of the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood movement in the Middle East) and the Iranian-led alliance that comprises the Assad regime in Syria, the Hezbollah terrorist organization in Lebanon, and the Palestinian Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip. Therefore, not only do we face the task of destroying Islamic State, but we have to do so in a way that avoids creating suspicion about our true intentions within what might conveniently be called the “not allies, not enemies” camp.

This is a strategy that, in military terms, is fraught with risk, at the same time as being enormously confusing politically. Do we look sideways at Iran’s nuclear program for the sake of a successful campaign against Islamic State?

Do we continue ignoring Qatari and Turkish backing for Hamas for the same reason? Look at how western leaders have addressed these issues — French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, for example, has insisted, “You must not establish confusion between this [Islamic State] question and the question of nuclear weapons that we are discussing now with the Iranians,” without explaining whether the war on Islamic State has impacted negotiations over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The lack of consistency and clarity is deeply disturbing.

And so, I return to my original question: who are we at war with in the Middle East? Islamic

State is a breathtakingly brutal case of where Islamism can lead, but it is far from being the only Islamist force in the Middle East that is willing to kill Americans and other westerners. Assuming we are able to defeat Islamic State, we will still have to deal with a spectrum of adversaries that includes al-Qaeda offshoots, the Muslim Brotherhood, and most of all, the Iranian regime. We need to be thinking now about how to approach these entities and states in the wake of an Islamic State defeat, much as British and American planners thought about post-war relations with the Soviet Union in the closing stages of World War II. Doing so efficiently means not closing our eyes and ears to unpalatable truths. Most urgently, let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that Iran won’t take advantage of current situation, or that its nuclear program is not a comparable threat to that posed by Islamic State. There is a real prospect that Iran will weaponize its nuclear program, thereby inaugurating an era of danger for the Middle East that will make the current one look like a picnic. Should that happen, the war against Islamic State will seem like a footnote in a broader story of western defeat in the Middle East, rather than the opening gambit of a strategy to confront and, yes, defeat the enemies of freedom across the region.

always be merciful and always be just. Because G-d’s justice is merciful, and G-d’s mercy is just; it’s all one; the whole world and all that happens is all part of Hashem’s one-ness and part of one plan.

This is part of what Hashem is sharing with us at the beginning of the Ten Commandments: “Anochi Hashem Elokecha” (“I am the Lord your G-d”) (Exodus 20).

And this is perhaps the essence of what Yom Kippur is all about: what most protects me in my life: is the absolute knowledge that Hashem runs the world. Our greatest choice is how we choose to see the world; if we could really know that Hashem is always there, we would never be alone, and we would never ever have a bad day; because it would all be good. Easy to say; but very hard to do. So one day a year we try to tap into that beautiful truth, and fall in love with our Creator, all over again.

Yom Kippur is about reconnecting to Hashem who is always protecting us; it is the day we celebrate the anniversary of being forgiven for the great mistake of the Golden Calf and remembering that Hashem always has and always will love us. On this day we reaffirm our faith in G-d, and we have the chance to consider how, in the coming year we will once again live up to G-d’s faith in us.

Wishing all of you and the entire Jewish people a meaningful day full of joy and forgiveness, and renewed faith and love.

Best wishes for a sweet happy and healthy year and a G’mar Chatimah Tovah.

Rabbi Hertz concluded his essay declaring, “This Day of Atonement prayer implies a turning away from the vanities of life, and a resolve to grasp the Almighty Hand which is ever outstretched to receive the penitent. It is that clear recognition of the sinful life which causes the sinner to forsake his evil way, and the man of iniquity his unrighteous thoughts.

This withdrawal from sin is itself a return to G-d, a reconciliation and an at-one-ment of

man and our Father who is in Heaven.”

As we undertake our Yom Kippur commitments, let us make the effort to impress upon our Father and our King that we are truly penitent.

Perhaps it’s a blessing that we don’t declare this prayer too often on this particular day of “Yom Kippur and Shabbos,” because maybe it will be a retroactive indication that we truly will have done nothing wrong, and everything is right on this Yom Kippur.

And if this shall come to pass for all of Israel, may our people be blessed to not only have a successful Yom Kippur, but a blessed year of good tidings, peace in our homes and peace in the Land of Israel.

For them, anyone can be considered an infidel, including fellow Muslims.

Ladies and gentlemen, militant Islam’s ambition to dominate the world seems mad, but so too did the global ambitions of another fanatic ideology that swept into power eight decades ago. The Nazis believed in a master race. The militant Islamists believe in a master faith. They just disagree who among them will be the master of the master faith. …

There is one place where that could soon happen — the Islamic State of Iran.

For 35 years, Iran has relentlessly pursued the global mission which was set forth by its founding ruler, Ayatollah Khomeini. …

Iran’s President Rohani stood here last week and shed crocodile tears over what he called the globalization of terrorism. Maybe he should spare us those phony tears and have a word instead with the commanders of Iran’s revolutionary guards. He could ask them to call off Iran’s global terror campaign, which has included attacks in two dozen countries on five continents since 2011 alone. You know, to say that Iran doesn’t practice terrorism is like saying Derek Jeter never played shortstop for the New York Yankees. This bemoaning by the Iranian president of the spread of terrorism has got to be one of history’s greatest displays of doubletalk. …

Don’t be fooled by Iran’s manipulative charm offensive, it’s designed for one purpose and for one purpose only: to lift the sanctions and remove the obstacles to Iran’s path to the bomb.

The Islamic Republic is now trying to bamboozle its way to an agreement that will remove the sanctions it still faces and leave it with a capacity of thousands of centrifuges to enrich uranium. This would effectively cement Iran’s place as a threshold military nuclear power. And in the future, at the time of its choosing, Iran, the world’s most dangerous regime, in the world’s most dangerous region, would obtain the world’s most dangerous weapons. Allowing that to happen would pose the gravest threat to us all. It’s one thing to confront militant Islamists on pickup trucks armed with Kalashnikov rifles. It’s another thing to confront militant Islamists armed with weapons of mass destruction. …

There’s only one responsible course of action to address this threat. Iran’s nuclear military capabilities must be fully dismantled. Make no mistake: ISIS must be defeated. But to defeat ISIS and leave Iran as a threshold nuclear power is to win the battle and lose the war. …

The fight against militant Islam is indivisible. When militant Islam succeeds anywhere, it’s emboldened everywhere.

When it suffers a blow in one place, it’s set back in every place. That’s why Israel’s fight against Hamas is not just our fight, it’s your fight. Israel is fighting a fanaticism today that your countries may be forced to fight tomorrow.

For 50 days this past summer Hamas fired thousands of rockets at Israel, many of them supplied by Iran. I want you to think about what your countries would do if thousands of rockets were fired at your cities. Imagine millions of your citizens having seconds at most to scramble to bomb shelters day after day. You wouldn’t let terrorists fire rockets at your cities with impunity, nor would you let terrorists dig dozens of terror tunnels under your borders to infiltrate your towns in order to murder and kidnap your citizens.

Israel justly defended itself against both rocket attacks and terror tunnels.

Yet Israel faced another challenge. We faced a propaganda war because in an attempt to win the world sympathy, Hamas cynically used Palestinian civilians as human shields. It used schools — not just schools, UN schools — private homes, mosques, even hospitals to store and fire rockets at Israel.

As Israel surgically struck at the rocket launchers and at the tunnels, Palestinian civilians were tragically but unintentionally killed. There are heartrending images that resulted, and these fueled libelous charges that Israel was deliberately targeting civilians. We were not.

We deeply regret every single civilian casualty. And the truth

is this: Israel was doing everything to minimize Palestinian civilian casualties. Hamas was doing everything to maximize Israeli civilian casualties and Palestinian civilian casualties.

Israel dropped flyers, made phone calls, sent text messages, broadcast warnings in Arabic on Palestinian television, all this to enable Palestinian civilians to evaluate targeted areas.

No other country and no other army in history have gone to greater lengths to avoid casualties among the civilian population of their enemies.

Now, this concern for Palestinian life was all the more remarkable given that Israeli civilians were being bombarded by rockets day after day, night after night. And as their families were being rocketed by Hamas, Israel’s citizen army, the brave soldiers of the IDF, our young boys and girls, they upheld the highest moral values of any army in the world.

Israel’s soldiers deserve not condemnation but admiration, admiration from decent people everywhere.

Now, here is what Hamas did. Hamas embedded its missile batteries in residential areas and told Palestinians to ignore Israel’s warnings to leave. And just in case people didn’t get the message, they executed Palestinian civilians in Gaza who dared to protest. And no less reprehensible, Hamas deliberately placed its rockets where Palestinian children live and play.

The human rights — that’s an oxymoron, the UN Human Rights Council — but I’ll use it just the same. The council’s biased treatment of Israel is only one manifestation of the return of one of the world’s largest prejudices. We hear mobs today in Europe call for the gassing of Jews. We hear some national leaders compare Israel to the Nazis. This is not a function of Israel’s policies. It’s a function of diseased minds. and that disease has a name. It’s called anti-Semitism. It is now spreading in polite society where it masquerades as legitimate criticism of Israel.

For centuries the Jewish people have been demonized with blood libels and charges of deicide. Today the Jewish state is demonized with the apartheid libel and charges of genocide — genocide. In what moral universe does genocide include warning the enemy civilian population to get out of harm’s way, or ensuring that they receive tons — tons of humanitarian aid each day even as thousands of rockets are being fired at us, or setting up a field hospital to aid their wounded?

Well, I suppose it’s the same moral universe where a man who wrote a dissertation of lies about the Holocaust and who insists on a Palestine free of Jews — Judenrein — can stand at this podium and shamelessly accuse Israel of genocide and ethnic cleansing. In the past, outrageous lies against the Jews were the precursors to the wholesale slaughter of our people, but no more. Today, we, the Jewish people, have the power to defend ourselves. We will defend ourselves against our enemies on the battlefield, we will expose their lies against us in the court of public opinion. Israel will continue to stand proud and unbowed.

I’m ready to make a historic compromise, not because Israel occupies a foreign land. The people of Israel are not occupiers in the land of Israel — history, archaeology and common sense all make clear that we have had a singular attachment to this land for over 3,000 years.

I want peace because I want to create a better future for my people, but it must be a genuine peace — one that is anchored in mutual recognition and enduring security arrangements, rock solid security arrangements on the ground because, you see, Israeli withdrawals from Lebanon and Gaza created two militant Islamic enclaves on our borders from which tens of thousands of rockets have been fired at Israel, and these sobering experiences heightens Israel’s security concerns. … Israel cannot have territories from which it withdraws taken over by Islamic militants yet again, as happened in Gaza and Lebanon. Indeed, that sense of overcoming our own bodily needs to invest every moment of the day in the act of repentance is one of the mainstays of the fasting experience. But afflicting ourselves comes in a number of forms.

In addition to not working and eschewing food and drink, Jews on Yom Kippur traditionally don’t wear leather shoes or any other leather garment such as belts; don’t bathe, swim or wash; don’t use perfumes or lotions, and avoid marital relations.

Yom Kippur is a legal holiday in Israel, with no radio or TV, buses or trains, and certainly no shopping. (History buffs may recall that one Yom Kippur did see a broadcast: during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, to alert the Israeli citizenry to a massive attack by Egypt and Syria).

In today’s heavily secular Israel, along with bicycling on (nearly empty) streets, fasting is one traditional observance that is stubbornly clung to — nearly three-quarters of Israelis planned to fast last year. No wonder Israelis of all stripes wish each other a “tsom kal” (easy fast) or “tsom mo’iil” (beneficial fast).

Israelis, of course, are not alone in this practice. Regardless of what they do the rest of the day, many Jews fast on Yom Kippur.

But why?

“When we walk around with a full belly, we develop a sort of haughtiness, a sense of self-satisfaction,” says Rabbi Avi Moshel of Jerusalem. “So in the 25 hours of fasting, we actually put ourselves in a state of humility.”

“Being hungry and thirsty reminds us that all we eat and drink, in fact, all we have in life, comes directly from G-d,” he adds. “The goal of the day is to bring ourselves down enough to sincerely ask for forgiveness, in-

crease our awareness of G-d in our life and our commitment to hands-on Judaism, the religion of action.”

The idea is that the prayers and spiritual and emotional tasks of the day are so compelling that they wipe food (more or less) out of our minds. Rabbi David Aaron of the Jewish education organization Isralight likes to tell the story of the old-country rabbi who was asked by his students how many times a year he fasts. When he answered that he never fasts, they were shocked, asking, “You mean you eat on Yom Kippur?

“Eat on Yom Kippur? Of course not!” the rabbi shot back. “On Yom Kippur I am far too busy doing teshuva to even have an appetite!”

The point, says Rabbi Aaron, is that “when we are truly in the spirit of these days, the desire for food just falls away.”

But who exactly should fast? Youngsters start fasting for real at bar/bat mitzvah age, but also begin much younger; Jewish tradition encourages children to postpone their meals a bit and skip the candy and ice cream treats.

Besides little kids, who shouldn’t fast on the holiest day of the year? Women in their first 72 hours after birth, certainly, and even those during the first week should work closely with their rabbi and doctor to determine how much fasting they should do. As for pregnant women, all those except for the ones having high-risk pregnancies are expected to fast; the others should speak with their doctor or midwife and consult their rav.

Judaism insists that life comes first, and gives guidelines for the sick to take in needed sustenance while respecting the spirit of the fast. After checking in with their rabbi and doctor, they typically restrain themselves to 30ml of water or food (one fluid ounce)

every 10 minutes or so to prevent dehydration and weakness. It’s usually suggested that they focus on simple high-protein foods which have more power to strengthen than empty calories. In the case of required medications, rabbis and doctors make provisions on a case-by-case basis.

In fact, Jewish tradition is ready for them.

An ancient High Holiday prayer book provides this blessing for someone sick before eating on Yom Kippur: “Behold I am prepared to fulfill the mitzvah of eating and drinking on Yom Kippur, as You have written in Your Torah: ‘You shall observe My statutes and My ordinances, which a man shall do and live with them. I am G-d. In the merit of fulfilling this mitzvah, seal [my fate], and [that of] all the ill of Your nation Israel, for a complete recovery. May I merit next Yom Kippur to once again fulfill [the mitzvah of] ‘you shall afflict yourselves [on Yom Kippur].’

May this be Your will. Amen.”

But with the vast majority of Jews fasting, there is another, less spiritual benefit to hosts and hostesses everywhere: the breakfast, when the most humble hard-boiled egg is lauded for its luscious perfection. You will never have such appreciative guests at any other time during the year!

A good soak. Stay well hydrated in the days leading up the fast, as this reduces weakness during Yom Kippur.

Food drive at Shalhevet aids JCC pantry store

Join Long Island’s fastest growing Jewish newspaper

Shalhevet With all the Yomim Tovim coming up, Midreshet Shalhevet in North Woodmere held a food drive to help those in need.

Over the past few weeks, the students collected non-perishable food items. After collecting boxes of food, a group of girls from each grade went to the Jewish Community Council to deliver the food and stock the shelves.

The JCC Food Pantry was thrilled to receive the donations of grape juice, honey, noodles, canned vegetables, soups, and more. The pantry is a remarkable charity that sets its room up as a store, complete with carts and shopping bags, so that everyone is treated as a real customer, no matter what they can afford.

Tenth grader Yocheved Jacobs remarked that “it was incredible to see how the JCC really goes the extra mile to ensure that no one gets embarrassed from walking through their doors.”

It was an amazing experience for all of the girls to see firsthand what a difference they made and a great way to start off the new year ahead!

HANC The students at the Samuel & Elizabeth Bass Golding Early Childhood Center and Elementary School of the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County busily prepared for Rosh Hashana. They learned about the many mitzvoth and traditions of the day, including the special tefilot that are said, blowing the shofar, giving tzedakah, dipping apples in honey, and wishing friends and family a “Shana Tova”.

At HANC 609, Elementary School Principal Rabbi Yaakov Sadigh began each day by blowing the shofar.

Students on the West Hempstead campus are proud of their hard work on the many hands-on and sweet projects they undertook.

They painted with apples, made honey dishes and apple-themed napkin holders, wrote Shana Tova letters to their families, baked round challahs to take home, and tasted yummy apples dipped in honey.

Sixth grade students were also treated to the Tzivos HasShem Shofar Factory where they learned the halachot of what makes a kosher shofar and then each student was able to saw, sand and blow their very own shofar!
