Bibi, in Washington, thanks Pres. Obama

By The Jewish Star and JNS.org Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday moved beyond the war of words between his ofďŹ ce and the White House, publicly thanking President Obama for working to secure American support of Isreal’s defense needs for the next decade.

Netanyahu told delegates to the Jewish Federation of North America General Assembly, in Washington, that on Monday in the White House he had a “wonderful discussion with President Obama� on defense aid.

He noted the importance of Obama’s commitment to bolstering Israel’s qualitative military edge, so that Israel can defend itself—by itself—against any threat.

Israel is reportedly seeking an increase in annual aid from $3 billion to $5 billion.

The U.S. and Israel “can and should work together now� to ensure that Iran complies with the agreement and to curb Iranian aggression throughout the Middle East, Netanyahu told the assembly, declaring that “no matter what disagreements there are between Israel and the United States, Israel has no better friend than America and America has no better friend than Israel.�

Just as America and Israel stand together, so too must Jews, he continued: “There is only one Jewish people and

there is only one Jewish state. Now more than ever we must work to unite the Jewish people and secure the Jewish state,� he said. “No matter what disagreements there have been within the Jewish community, maintaining the unity of our people is of paramount importance.�

Commenting on Israel’s values, the prime minister said, “I know that all of you are proud of Israel’s outstanding technological achievements, but I think we should no less be proud of Israel’s values.� “This is democracy,� Netanyahu said, adding, “What is truly remarkable is that Israel upholds these values in the darkest and most Continued on page 4

PM boosts Conservatives, Reform Prime Minister Netanyahu surprised delegates at this week’s Jewish Federation of North America General Assembly — and ignited a storm in Israel — when, after praising a “pluralism� in Israel that includes equality for women, opportunity for Arab citizens, the only thriving community of Christians in the Middle East, and a favorable environment for

gay people, he announced that his government would support aid to non-Orthodox Jewish denominations in the Holy Land. “I will always ensure that all Jews can feel at home in Israel — Reform Jews, Conservative Jews, Orthodox Jews, all Jews,â€? he said. “Now, for the ďŹ rst time, together with the Jewish Agency, we will invest directly in the

development and fostering of Conservative and Reform communities in Israel,� he said.

Reaction from Israel came swiftly. “The Reform and Conservatives split the Jewish people and it is forbidden to support them in harming the Torah of Israel,� said Health Minister Yaakov Litzman of United Torah Judaism.

And Yondeibi Espinal, lead environmental services aide at South Nassau, was surprised with the new Cupola Award. The cupola, which sits atop the hospital’s original building, represents its tradition of caring.

Funds raised will be added to a ďŹ veyear, $10 million campaign to help pay for a $60 million renovation and expansion of the Oceanside Emergency Department.

Yes â&#x20AC;Ś thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a JCC in Turkey!

By Maayan Jaffe, JNS.org â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have to keep Judaism alive and sparkling,â&#x20AC;? says Sami Azar, a volunteer with the Turkish Chief Rabbinate Foundation â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the Jewish Community of Turkey, otherwise known as the Turkish Jewish Community Center or TJC. Azar, who lives in Izmir, runs a smaller JCC program about a 45-minute plane ride from Istanbul, where two larger JCCs are established. In his town of nearly 4 million people, only about 1,700 are Jewish. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the last 10 years, we have had 387 deaths and only 38 births,â&#x20AC;? notes Azar during a recent interview in Jerusalem. He and his colleague, Tuna Alkan, who volunteers with youths between ages 18 and 35 through the Istanbul T.J.C. network, attended last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s JCC Global 2015 World Conference. Somewhat isolated as a Jewish community in a Muslimmajority country where Jews are forced to keep a low proďŹ le, Azar says the conference helps him to â&#x20AC;&#x153;feel more motivated. â&#x20AC;Ś It is very good for us.â&#x20AC;?

The institution of the JCC in Turkey is different than the traditional model in the United States, whose pillars are early childhood, camping, health, and recreation. In Turkey, the JCC is â&#x20AC;&#x153;really the center for the Jews to feel safe and they feel that is their community,â&#x20AC;? explains Smadar Bar-Akiza, executive director of the JCC Global organization in Jerusalem.

Alkan, a dentist by profession, says life is not as bad for the Jews in Turkey as it might appear in the news. While she admits that the current Turkish governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Islamistâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t â&#x20AC;&#x153;agree with anything Israel does,â&#x20AC;? she says the government tries not to take out its frustration with the Jewish state on the local Jewish community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The leaders say in Turkey that Jews are citizens and the problem is Israeli politicians. We are guaranteed our rights as citizensâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;security, everything. Do I feel like that is true? Yes,â&#x20AC;? says Azar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had anything in the streets in a long time,â&#x20AC;? adds Alkan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel safe.â&#x20AC;?

She also feels that there is a future for Jews in the Muslimmajority country. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Turkey, we survive our Jewish life,â&#x20AC;? Alkan says with a

smile, taking a trip back in history. Jews have lived in Turkey since Hellenic times. There are several historic synagogues there, including a synagogue in Sardis that dates back to the 3rd century CE. The majority of Jews arrived in Turkey in 1492 from the Iberian Peninsula, after the Spanish expulsion. Today, there are estimated to be as many as 18,500 Jews throughout the country. The majority of them (17,000) reside in Istanbul. Some 96 percent are Sephardic and the other 4 percent are of Ashkenazic descent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even though we are small, we are very successful,â&#x20AC;? says Alkan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have very famous artists, academicians, very successful businessmen and women and some very well-educated people working in very famous international companies at high levels.

Really, we are doing okay.â&#x20AC;?

Alkan describes the Jewish community as â&#x20AC;&#x153;traditional,â&#x20AC;? with roughly 5 percent of the Istanbul community and 10 percent of the Izmir community identifying as Orthodox.

Through TJC, families can take part in a number of Jewish opportunities ranging from youth and family clubs, synagogues (Turkey has 19), social support organizations, Jewish day schooling (640 students are enrolled), Jewish kindergartens (two, with about 200 children each), and a Jewish newspaper (Salom).

There are shochtim, mohelim, cantors, a burial society, a mikvah and kosher butchers.

One initiative that Alkan is proud of started four years ago in Istanbul. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have about 350 to 400 families in need,â&#x20AC;? says Alkan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We try to provide them with food, moneyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;everything they would need. So a group of women started volunteering to do kosher catering. They started like amateurs. Now, they do really, really wonderful things. They have a big catering businessâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so big that this catering company is giving the kosher meals to Turkish airlines.â&#x20AC;?

A portion of the proceeds are still given to the Turkish families in need, helping to continually sustain them.

The new programming for young adults that Alkan runs is meant to halt a rapidly growing rate of intermarriage. She says there is an intermarriage rate of around 34 percent in Istanbul; Azar says the rate is around 20 percent in Izmir.

In many Muslim countries, intermarriage between Jews and Muslims is strictly forbidden. In Morocco, for example, Jewish

families send their teens to France in high school and beyond in hopes of them getting a Jewish education and having them meet a Jewish spouse. Intermarriage is forbidden there. In Turkey, however, it is welcomedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;or at least not shunned. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By Turkish law it is okay. By Jewish law it is not okay,â&#x20AC;? says Azar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For us, the assimilation needs to dropâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why we are doing so many activities to attract young people.â&#x20AC;?

Bar-Akiza calls the JCC an important venue â&#x20AC;&#x153;to socialize as a Jew and keep Jews Jewish.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;In many places there is competition between the JCCs and other Jewish institutions or even non-Jewish institutions. In Turkey, the JCC is place to congregate and study about traditions. It is not just a music class or a lecture,â&#x20AC;? says Bar-Akiza.

She adds, â&#x20AC;&#x153;All Jews are responsible for one another. With the global JCC movement, we are really trying to breathe life into [this phrase] and to turn it into action.â&#x20AC;?

While the Palestinians refuse to recognize a Jewish state of any boundaries, Israel seeks peace, said Netanyahu, noting that when it came to Arab leaders such as Egypt’s Anwar Sadat and Jordan’s King Hussein, Israel indeed made peace.

W

hen Steve Jobs was 17 he saw a quote: “If you live each day as though it were your last, some day you will most certainly be right.”

In a Stanford University commencement address in 2005, he recounted that after seeing that quote, every day in the morning he would look in the mirror and ask himself, “If today were the last day of my life would I want to do what I am about to do today?”

And whenever the answer had been no for too many days in a row, he knew something needed to change.

Jobs said that remembering we would be dead soon was the greatest tool he ever encountered for helping to make the big choices in life, because almost everything (fear of failure, external expectations, pride) falls away in the face of death.

A year earlier he had been diagnosed with cancer. At 7:30 in the morning, they showed him a tumor on his pancreas and told him it was most likely incurable; he was told he had 3 to 6 months to live.

His doctor told him to go home and get his affairs in order, which means prepare to die. It means to try and tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the rest of your life to tell them. It means to get everything buttoned up so it will be as easy as possible for your family when you are gone. It means … say your goodbyes.

He lived with this all day. Then that night, they did a biopsy on his pancreas and discovered he had a rare form of pancreatic cancer that was curable with surgery; he had the surgery and survived.

No one wants to die. Even people who want to get to heaven don’t really want to die to get there. But death clears away the old, to make way for the new.

And even if we are young and see ourselves as the “new,” some day, suggested Jobs, we will gradually become the old and will be cleared away.

Concluding his now famous Stanford commencement address in 2005, Jobs said: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma … don’t let the noise of other people’s thinking drown out the sound of your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

They somehow already know what you truly want to become.”

“Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” his week’s portion, Toldot, tells of an impossible choice: Which of the two sons of Yitzchak and Rivkah should receive the blessing of leadership and be chosen as the next patriarch of the family of Abraham, soon to be the Jewish people?

Yaakov and Esau, despite being twins, are two completely different personalities: Esau is the hunter, the outdoors-man; Yaakov is the scholar and introvert, who stays near the tents. Esau is loved by his father, and Yaakov is apparently the apple of his mother’s eye.

The Torah shares with us how, despite be-

ing born first, Esau “despises the birthright,” selling it to his younger brother for a pot of soup. Clearly, Esau, who lives in the moment, was not meant to carry the torch of grandfather Avraham’s monotheistic new religion.

The covenant, as prophesied to Rivka their mother whilst still pregnant with them both, will pass to Yaakov the scholar; he will be the chosen one.

And yet, the Torah dedicates an inordinate amount of time to the struggle Yitzchak seems to have in blessing Yaakov, not to mention the pain Esau experiences in being deceived and missing the opportunity to be “the chosen one.”

Ultimately, Esau, begging his father for some remaining blessing after Yitzchak was blessed, explains, breaks down and weeps.

We feel his pain.

Why does the Torah bother with all these details? Why not just tell us that Yitzchak blessed Yaakov?

And it does not end there: Jewish rabbinic tradition, despite vilifying Esau, will nonetheless ascribe to him tremendous respect for his father to the point that he is clearly troubled by the angst he causes his father over his marriage to Hittite (Canaanite) women, and thus takes a wife from the daughters of Yishmael to appease his parents.

Ultimately when the Jewish people journey towards the conquest of the land of Israel, G-d makes it clear they are not allowed to take even a foot of the land of Seir which was given to Edom, the descendants of Esau. There is even a specific injunction — “lo te’taev Edomi, ki achicha’ hu” (“you shall not despise the Edomite, for he is your brother”)!

And in describing the generations of Esau (Genesis 36), the Torah takes the time to tell us that the Kings of Edom ruled the land of Seir long before any Jewish king ruled in Israel. In other words, Esau too received his blessing — and sooner than Yaakov!

We love to view the world through black and white lenses: good guys vs. bad guys, the Lone Ranger with the white hat fighting all the villains in black. But life is not black and white, it is nuanced.

In fact, when the two brothers re-unite after Yaakov’s long exile in the land of Lavan (the result of his running from Esau’s wrath over Yaakov’s deception), Esau falls on his brother’s neck and all is forgiven and forgotten, at least in the plain meaning of the text.

So what are we meant to make of all this and how are we meant to view Esau? Yes, Yaakov is chosen, and for the right reasons, but that does not mean there is not a price to be paid. ack in the beginning, Hashem chooses Abel’s offering, which leads Cain to hate him and ultimately kill him. And when Yaakov chooses Rachel as his beloved wife, Leah feels hated, which certainly plays a role in the brothers’ hatred of Joseph and the disaster that ensues.

Perhaps the Torah is telling us that just because Yaakov is chosen, it does not mean that Esau is not loved. Indeed, one of the puzzling details of the story of Yaakov and Esau is Yitzchak’s love for Esau. Even though Rivkah has been told by G-d that Yaakov will be the chosen one, Yitzchak still loves Esau.

n his speech at a Tel Aviv ceremony on the 20th anniversary of Yitzhak Rabinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assassination, former President Bill Clinton praised Rabin and took some not so subtle slams at the present Israeli government. He presented Rabin as a blind peacemaker, not as the man he really was.

Clinton said that Rabin had been steadfast in pursuing peace and that his mantra when a terrorist attack was staged was, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will ďŹ ght terrorism as if there are no negotiations, and negotiate as if there is no terrorism.â&#x20AC;?

Clinton asked the crowd, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What does this all amount to? That is up to you. â&#x20AC;Ś The next step is deciding that Rabin was right, that you must share the future with Palestinian children, and to give peace a chance.â&#x20AC;?

Obviously the former president forgot that it takes two to tango and that the Palestinians have shown little desire to make peace. The other thing heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forgotten was

this: When he was assassinated two decades ago, Yitzhak Rabin had been thinking of tossing out the Oslo deal.

Since his death, the myth of Rabinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s peacemaking expanded. While it is true that he was the prime minister who began the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oslo Process,â&#x20AC;? it is also true that Rabinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ nal vision for the Oslo process was to the right of supposedly â&#x20AC;&#x153;hawkishâ&#x20AC;? Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Rabin did not

We would like this to be an entity which is less than a state, and which will independently run the lives of the Palestinians under its authority.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;˘No return to â&#x20AC;&#x2122;67 borders: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The borders of the State of Israel, during the permanent solution, will be beyond the lines which existed before the Six Day War. In the scenario where Arab Israeli media portrays a terroristâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death at the hands of Israeli security forces as â&#x20AC;&#x153;murder,â&#x20AC;? and omits the fact that the â&#x20AC;&#x153;victimâ&#x20AC;? had committed a terrorist attack before being killed, it can lead to fear by the general Arab population. Zieve says that while Israeli Jews are afraid to leave their homes over fear of getting attacked and killed, Israeli Arabs are also afraidâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;of being mistaken for terrorists and being killed.

The most recent Peace Index poll published by the Israel Democracy Institute and the Guttman Center for Surveys showed that there is considerable fear of attacks on both sides. Sifriyat Pijama returns to HALB The Hebrew Academy of Long Beach held its ďŹ rst Family Sifriyat Pijama event of the year last week.

Over 40 families strong, with children in preschool through the third grade, this event brought families and community together while emphasizing Ivrit and Hebrew culture.

A story reading of the November Sifriyat Pijama book, Maaseh BaChatulayim (A Tale of Two Cats), was led by HALBâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bnei Akiva shlichot, Ayala Gozland and Moriah Hertz.

The two cats, one black and one white, were good friends who began to envy one another and ultimately realized that each was unique and special in his own right.

Pink-clad girls at Shalhevet aid Sharsheret October was an inspiring month at Midreshet Shalhevet, with students dressing in pink to show support for all women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Two eleventh grade students, Michal Beer and Rachel Fishbein, raised money for Sharsheret, which helps provide care to Jewish women suffering from breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Sixth graders selected their candidates during a primary election which took place a week earlier. In the days leading up to the election, candidates campaigned by putting up posters and working hard to drum up support. On Election Day, the candidates gave a speech about their goals and aspirations if elected and how they would focus on this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Student Council goal of doing more chessed.

By Yoni Meiri, Rambam Mesivta senior Along with three of my classmates, Aaron Goldblatt, Elly Marcus and Avraham Sosnowik, and accompanied by Mr. David Kintzer, I spent three empowering and educational days in Washington at the AIPAC Schusterman Advocacy Institute High School Summit.

Over 400 high school students from all segments of the Jewish community, including day schools and public schools, from all parts of the country participated, sharing a commitment to Israel and to strengthening the U.S.-Israel alliance. We attended seminars on the importance of the alliance, written advocacy, advocacy using public speaking, responding to BDS, anti-Semitism on college campuses, and on core issues related to the current situation in Israel and the Middle East. AIPAC deployed over 100 staffers to support the program.

The Summit concluded with all the attendees meeting with their Congressional representatives. We participated in the democratic process by clearly expressing our appreciation for supportive positions and urging consideration of important actions on pending legislation and resolutions.

There were three key issues that were the focus of these meetings: urging Congress to take signiďŹ cant action to curb Palestinian Authority incitement, especially in light of the current wave of terror; obtaining Congressional support for the U.S. to supply the necessary weapons systems to ensure that Israel maintains a qualitative military edge; and the importance of maintaining a strong positive relationship between the U.S. and Israel.

On the ďŹ nal day of the summit, I had the honor of speaking when my lobbying caucus met with South Shore Rep. Kathleen Rice, who was warm and receptive to our group.

After I expressed our concerns on behalf of the group, Rep. Rice stressed her dedication to supporting the U.S.Israel relationship. One day before our meeting, there had been a call to vote on the Royce-Engel resolution and Rep. Rice supported it. Royce-Engel calls on P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas to cease P.A. incitement of terror. Its passage

As members of the Jewish community, we all have an obligation to do what we can to help our brothers and sisters in Israel. Whether you are still in high school, a senior citizen or somewhere in between, there are many ways to contribute to the welfare and safety of the Jewish people.

Building relationships with members of Congress and lobbying them is most effective on a large scale. Building a relationship with a member of Congress doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t demand enormous amounts of time, it simply requires expressing concern about a particular issue. You can help Israel in the time it takes to post a Facebook status. When a representative sees that their constituents care about Israel, they quickly appreciate that they need to care about Israel.

It is for this reason that I urge every person who reads this article to take a few minutes to send an email to their Congressional representative. Thank them for their support if they have shown it, and ask them to continue to support Israel. Urge them to begin supporting Israel if they havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

If you want to stay more informed about issues and know when contacting your representative matters most, visit aipac.org on a regular basis, and sign up for their mailing list. I was fortunate that the administration of Rambam Mesivta gave me the opportunity to attend the AIPAC summit. It is part of their continuing message to students about the importance of being active members of the community who recognize their responsibilities as part of Am Yisrael. This was one of many pro-Israel events which I learned about through Rambam, and which they helped me attend.

Rambam also has an active Israel Awareness Committee (IAC), of which I am a proud co-founder. Whether it is raising support, awareness or funds, the IAC is constantly looking to protect Israel. Rambam emphasizes community, activism and Israel. I am grateful and proud to be a student there.

First aid triage: Put terrorists before victims?

JNS.org In the midst of the ongoing wave of Palestinian terror attacks against Israelis, a controversy has brewed with regard to how Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organizations decide whom to treat first on the scene of an attack. The firestorm began after Eli Bin, director general of Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) said that paramedics could choose to treat injured Palestinian terrorists before treating Jewish Israeli victims with lighter wounds.

“When I see my enemy wounded I no longer treat him as a terrorist, but as a human being. He has surrendered, he no longer poses a threat, so I’ll treat him,” said.

Criticism of Bin’s remarks has ranged from a social media user writing that “a terrorist has essentially already forfeited his life by deciding to

carry out an attack” to Member of Knesset Bezalel Smotrich (Jewish Home) calling such a decision is “inconceivable.”

How often does a clear-cut choice between providing first treatment to a terrorist or a victim actually exist?

MDA treats patients based on the PreHospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) guidelines, which educate on the principles of caring for trauma patients in the field, along with some additional Israeli guidelines. The PHTLS system was founded in the U.S. by the National Association of

Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and is now an educational program available to EMS providers in 47 countries, including Israel.

MDA strives to establish a triage system in which anyone with life-threatening injuries is “receiving the treatment first,” Yagodovsky said.

During a terror attack, however, police will first deal with any dangerous people at the scene until they are no longer a threat. Said Yagodovsky: “Until we get clearance to approach a terrorist from the police, we do not approach [and in the meantime] we are treating others.”

In the U.S., EMTs and paramedics were trained not to enter a scene of a violent attack until it is rendered safe. But as a result of such mass shooting incidents as at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, in recent years the training paradigm shifted to telling law enforcement

and EMS organizations that “in fact they have to enter scenes a whole lot sooner than they typically have,” said Dr. Peter Pons, associate medical director for the NAEMT’s PHTLS program.

In Israel, MDA—the country’s national EMS organization—is aided by other EMS groups. If volunteer groups arrive on the scene of terror attacks earlier than MDA, they begin immediate assessment and treatment, later continuing to work under MDA’s guidance.

One of those organizations is United Hatzalah (Hebrew for “rescue”). Daniel Katzenstein, who is in charge of content and donor relations for Hatzalah and works as a volunteer EMT with the group, told JNS.org that United Hatzalah volunteers try to “stabilize the patients, deal with any traumatic bleeding, deal with lifethreatening injuries” until the ambulance arrives through a system also based on the Israeli Ministry of Health’s additional instructions for the PHTLS guidelines on triage and treatment.

Katzenstein, who was at the scene of several recent terror attacks in Jerusalem, said that “the general rule of [providing treatment for] mass casualty incidents … is ‘the greatest good to the greatest amount of people’.”

While a patient’s medical condition plays a strong part in assessing how quickly the patient should be treated, in practice an EMT might “not treat the [injured] person in the worst state” first because the chances of stabilizing that person may be very small compared to the chances of stabilizing the other patients, said Katzenstein.

Pons reiterated this point, saying that “when resources are limited and you have more victims than you have resources, that’s a decision that has to be made.” The decision to treat any patient, whether terrorist or victim, can often depend on this principle rather than on a moral choice.

But in fact, explained Katzenstein, usually by the time the scene is secured by the police, “we’ve already been up and down through the ranks treating everyone who needed to be treated,” and “by the time that [the terrorist] is freed for treatment, we already have enough resources on scene … to help all the people who need help, and it’s not going to be a victim-versus-terrorist dilemma. That’s the reality.”

Mati Goldstein—a longtime volunteer for another EMS organization in Israel, ZAKA (a Hebrew abbreviation for “Zihuy Korbanot Ason” or “Disaster Victim Identification” in English)—was the first to arrive at the scene of a recent shooting and stabbing attack on a bus in Jerusalem’s Armon Hanatziv neighborhood. Since today’s Israeli first responder system is so effective, “in about two to three minutes there are more paramedics and EMTs on the scene than people who need help,” said Goldstein, meaning that usually everyone who needs treatment gets treated simultaneously.

In the wake of the criticism being leveled at MDA, ZAKA Director Yehuda Meshi Zahav clarified, “You always have to deal first with those who are more severely wounded and this is a very difficult question.” At the same time, Zahav said ZAKA instructs its volunteers “to first take care of all Jews, because they were harmed just because they are Jews, while the terrorist murderer is deserving of death,” Israel National News reported.

Despite the medical code of ethics, “we need to know that there is also a limit to morality,” said Zahav.

Goldstein, head of ZAKA International Rescue Unit, believes Zahav’s message “is right.” Yet Goldstein’s experience in the field as an EMT dictates this choice rarely needs to be made.

“No one [actually] takes care of the terrorist [first],” Goldstein said.

Similarly, in the scenario of an active shooting in the U.S., Pons explained that “most of the time the active shooter typically either kills himself or is killed by law enforcement. Occasionally he will be wounded, [but] some of the time he will be gone from the scene, so it’s not a decision we’ve had to make often.”

Pons understands why this question gets “people upset” and that it is “an issue of controversy,” but when this choice does arise on rare occasions, he said that “what we tell our paramedics is, ‘It’s an ethical issue. You have a victim. Whether that victim is the assailant or the victim of the assailant, your goal should be the same in terms of prioritizing their care’.”

This sentiment is not limited to this one incident. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unfortunately, this is far more common than any parent might think. On a number of occasions, SACH has learned that parents from Arab countries refused to send their children to Israel to receive life-saving medical care simply because the care was to be provided in the Jewish state.

That said, SACH has saved around 2,000 Arab children, and couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care less who a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents are, where they are from, or

what their background is,â&#x20AC;? says Ari Morgenstern, communications director for Christians United for Israel and member of the SACH Advisory Board.

Presented in the ďŹ lm festival at APHAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 143rd annual meeting, the video, titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Heart of Israel,â&#x20AC;? features the work of Save a Childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heart (SACH), a non-proďŹ t that provides life-saving heart procedures for children from developing countries. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are very proud that this represents the best of Israel, based on the core Jewish values that each and every one of us has been brought up on, and that value is life,â&#x20AC;? says the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s executive director, Simon Fisher.

The production features two young Muslim mothers of children saved by SACH and the Wolfson Medical Center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Both were very eager to talk about their experience because it was so ďŹ lled with love, compassion, friendship, this hand of kindness and courage,â&#x20AC;? explains Nair. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t speak for them, not sure what they thought might happen, but having experienced that kind of love, they were bursting at the seams to tell their story.â&#x20AC;?

Nada was one month old when she was admitted to the medical center for a life-threatening ailment. Her parents who live in the West Bank had the heartbreaking experience of leaving their newborn child in the hospital.

Her mother explains in the video, â&#x20AC;&#x153;They saved her and now she is good and she goes to kindergarten and will grow up.â&#x20AC;?

Fatima is a Muslim woman who works at the center and runs a support group that meets once a week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I invite Palestinians, Israelis or anyone.

Sometimes Africans, Syrians and Kurdish,â&#x20AC;? says Fatima. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just talk and share thoughts, share experiences. We can learn from each other because at the end of the day they have the same problem, children with heart problems or any other problem.â&#x20AC;?

While the video offers much hope and serves as an example of how people can transcend their differences for the sake of their children, the worst of hatred still rears it ugly head. Tunisian-born Dr. Sion Houri, Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Wolfson Medical Center, explains that they have never operated on an Egyptian girl due to the hate and anti-Israel propaganda that engulfs Cairo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The closest we ever got was an Egyptian father trying to ďŹ nd a solution for his kid via the Internet,â&#x20AC;? Houri says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Being in contact with our people in England, when he understood that the surgery was to happen here in Israel, the last we heard from him was, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d rather see my kid dead than treated by a Jewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;?

Ingredients: 5 to 6 cups unbleached all-purpose ďŹ&#x201A;our or bread ďŹ&#x201A;our 6 extra-large eggs 3/4 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil Preperation: Put 5 cups ďŹ&#x201A;our in a 12-inch-wide mound on a work surface. Make a 6-inch-wide well in center (down to work surface) with ďŹ st. (The outer wall should be 1-1/2 to 2 inches high.)

Break eggs into well and add oil. Beat eggs and oil together with a fork, then gradually beat in ďŹ&#x201A;our from inner side of well wall, keeping wall intact while mixture is runny, until it comes together in a cohesive, kneadable mass (about two thirds of ďŹ&#x201A;our from mound will have been incorporated).

Knead dough with ďŹ&#x201A;oured hands, incorporating just enough ďŹ&#x201A;our on work surface until

dough no longer sticks to hands. (It will still be a little tacky; you will have ďŹ&#x201A;our left over.)

Set dough aside and scrape up and discard ďŹ&#x201A;our from work surface Lightly reďŹ&#x201A;our work surface using some of remaining cup ďŹ&#x201A;our and continue to knead dough, reďŹ&#x201A;ouring hands often, until smooth and elastic, about 6 minutes more. (Dough should still be slightly tacky.)

Form dough into a ball, then dust well with ďŹ&#x201A;our and wrap in plastic wrap. Let dough rest 30 minutes at room temperature.

Rolling out the pasta: Unwrap the dough from the plastic wrap. If the dough is sticky, just dust it with ďŹ&#x201A;our. Cut the dough in half, put half on the big clean counter where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to roll the pasta out, and rewrap the other half so it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dry out. Lightly dust your work surface with rice ďŹ&#x201A;our or a little bit of all-purpose ďŹ&#x201A;our. Slowly and evenly begin to roll the dough out. Flip and twist the dough on the counter top to ensure that it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sticking. If spots are sticking, lift the dough and lightly dust the surface with ďŹ&#x201A;our and continue rolling.

Roll the dough thin enough so that you can vaguely see a photo if placed under the dough.

Once rolled out, take a pizza cutter and cut strips in your desired thickness. Once sliced, loosely piled up the fresh noodles with just a bit of ďŹ&#x201A;our so they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick. Re-ďŹ&#x201A;our and ďŹ&#x201A;uff them every once in a while just to make sure they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick. Loosely cover the cut noodles with plastic wrap and begin to roll and cut out the other half of dough.

Cooking your Pasta: Once all your pasta is rolled and sliced, bring 8 quarts of water to a boil. Add 2 teaspoons of kosher salt to the boiling water and add half of the cut pasta. Cook for 1 or 2 minutes until al dente. Remove cooked pasta from boiling water with tongs, and drop in the other half of cut pasta to cook. Drain all of the cooked pasta in a colander. Do not rinse.

ver have a phone conversation with your cable company, SiriusXM provider, your wireless carrier? The other night I had two out of three.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind paying fees if I miss a payment date, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll put up ďŹ ght when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s their fault, or I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been told the contract fee had changed.

While looking at my bank statement, I noticed that I was still being charged for SiriusXM for the radio in a car I returned a month ago, and which I cancelled.

I called up, only to be on hold. Then I heard a recording, offering to call me back instead of me staying on the line. Fair enough. I left my name and number and receiving a call half hour later. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hello, hello, anyone there?â&#x20AC;? I asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sorry we missed you, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll try again later,â&#x20AC;? the recording replied. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m here, hello, hello.â&#x20AC;? I pleaded. Kind of like those movies, or TV shows, where the person is right there and no one sees or hears them. Click.

Ten minutes later the phone rings again. I quickly answer and say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hello, can you hear me?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes, the gentleman replied, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to shout, I hear you ďŹ ne.â&#x20AC;? I explain that I cancelled my SiriusXM when I returned my lease, I then also asked why I was paying more than I should have. He explained that they never received the cancellation but that he would refund the last month from my bill. As far as the amount, he explained it was three times the original contract amount

because after a year it goes up. I replied that I was never notiďŹ ed and that in that case I was going to cancel the contract I had on the remaining car â&#x20AC;&#x201D; all while secretly hoping he would offer me a better deal.

Without missing a beat he said he would slash the fee in half. I thanked him and hung up with a smile that basically thought, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not bad Judy!â&#x20AC;?

An hour later I get a call from my â&#x20AC;&#x153;CABLEâ&#x20AC;? carrier. The representative warned that the conversation would be taped, then said that services would be turned off if the bill was not paid. I explained that it was paid and I was on time. Turns out she was talking about my stepsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s account, which I also pay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re mistaken,â&#x20AC;? I said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I stopped service on that account in August when my stepson moved. On that same day I paid the balance.â&#x20AC;? She replied, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a record.â&#x20AC;?

I asked to speak to her supervisor and again was warned that the conversation would be taped, then got the same story. Again I was transferred and again warned about being taped. This time I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as nice (actually I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t nice the second time either, come to think of it). After repeating the story again I again heard, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sorry we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a record of your call canceling service.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Really? You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t? OK, tell you what: Why donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you listen to the taped conversations on Aug. 11, 2015, the day I called to cancel. You do tape every call, right? his week’s column will focus on a special author and his unique book on Jewish practice and law. The author, Thomas Furst, a lawyer, has the yichus of being a descendent of the great Gaon, the Chasam Sofer.

His religious credentials include having learned at Yeshivat Keren B’Yavneh, and he is currently an active member of the Great Neck Synagogue.

T

here are a number of three-word verses in the Torah. Some of them would seem to require no commentary, as only names are mentioned. See, for example, 25:14, when three of Yishmael’s children are listed — “Mishma, Duma, Masa”: 35:24, “Rachel’s children: Yosef and Binyamin” (four Hebrew words); Shmot 1:2-4, when the 11 tribes who descended to Egypt are simply listed.

A great example is Bereshit 46:23: “And the children of Dan: Chushim.” Another classic is in Yaakov’s blessing to his sons, when he cries out, “I pray that G-d will help you” (“lishu’atkha kiviti Hashem”) (49:18).

In our parsha, we have a seemingly inconsequential verse alerting us to Yitzchak’s settling in the city of Gerar — “Vayeshev Yitzchak B’Gerar” (26:6). The background to the verse is that Yitzchak appears to follow his father’s footsteps in settling in Gerar on account of a famine. G-d affirmed for Yitzchak that the blessing bestowed on Avraham would be transferred to Yitzchak in his father’s merit. And now he is settling in Gerar, about to use the same ruse that his parents used, declaring himself and his wife to be siblings in order to avoid being killed in anticipation of his wife being taken to King Avimelekh’s harem.

So “Yitzchak settled in Gerar.” That’s a simple fact, not too much to glean from it. It moves the story along, but is not, to say the very least, profound. And yet the commentaries have a mouthful to say even on this simple verse.

On the one hand, it teaches us that Yitzchak was fulfilling G-d’s instruction (Ibn Ezra, Or haChaim) and that he lived there securely on account of G-d’s Divine Providence (Netziv). He settled in “Gerar” because he was told gur (live) in the land. So he settled in the place where his father settled (Pesikta).

It was only after being blessed that he too will inherit the land that was promised to his descendants (Alshikh).

The fact that his wife was not taken in the

manner that his mother had been taken indicated that G-d was watching over him (Malbim).

This helps us to understand how “Yitzchak settled in Gerar” without regrets that he moved to a place which was potentially dangerous to his family.

In perhaps the longest exposition on the verse I found, the Tiferet Yehonatan explains both the origin of the word Gerar, and why Yitzchak settled there.

“The Midrash explains that Gerar comes from the word which means ‘drawn from’ another place. The land was not really owned by the Pelishtim. It is known that this is why Yosef and Paroh acquired all of Egypt and put the people into cities, because Avraham had been told, ‘Your children will be strangers (ger) in a land that is not theirs.’”

As “being stangers” implies they will be in a land that is not theirs, what is to be learned from those seemingly extra words is that Avraham’s descendants will be strangers in a land that does not belong to those who will be enslaving them, i.e. strangers to strangers.

Yitzchak began the “exile” through living in Gerar, which was not even owned by the Plishtim, as Avimelekh had stolen the land from those who lived there before him.

What a fascinating concept. The Torah tells us that all of Egypt was actually acquired by Joseph in his partnership with Pharaoh (47:2026). This would indicate that any descendants of the Pharaoh from Joseph’s time, and any descendants of Joseph could lay equal claim to that land, and that anyone else who might claim ownership is technically on stolen land.

But I digress.

The lessons to be learned from this tiny verse range from seeing G-d’s divine hand protecting Yitzchak, Yitzchak fulfilling G-d’s direct command and Yitzchak seeing G-d’s promise begin to be fulfilled, as well as a sense that Yitzchak is following in his father’s footsteps, albeit with a more pleasant experience owing to his ability to learn from the past.

I guess the next time we hear that someone has settled somewhere we will be inspired to find out the many implications and ramifications of that move, and what it says about the individual’s or family’s past, present and future.

a deeper understanding of what this great mitzvah is all about.”

Further on we consider the author’s take on the observance of Rosh Chodesh.

In the chapter on Rosh Chodesh, I note that it is an important observance on the Jewish ritual calendar. The chapter on Rosh Chodesh begins with eight questions that go to the core of this festival’s goals and teachings. Why is Rosh Chodesh so special as to warrant the recitation of the prayers Ya’ale Veyavoh and the Hallel, both recited on our major festivals. And for that matter, why only in an abbreviated form (the half-Hallel)? And why in fact do we have a lunar calendar, since Jewish holidays are all governed by the solar calendar? These are fascinating questions that generate fascinating answers and teachings.

In the chapter dealing with the recitation of 100 berachot each day, we note that this obligation is surprisingly derived from a Torah verse which does not even mention blessings, nor does it mention the number, 100, nor does it discuss the frequency of this mitzvah. However, a closer analysis of the words of this particular verse teaches us a crucial lesson as to the great religious and ritual significance of this mitzvah.”

This curious methodology follows throughout this valued work, helping you to further your learning and attain a better appreciation of the teachings of our faith. )25 )857+(5 678'< Given the increasing violence that we are witnessing in Israel, this week’s Torah reading in Toldot-Genesis, dealing with the relationship of Yitzchak and Avimelech, serves for us as an historical model, a lesson to learn from.

In one of the best English language commentaries, “Unlocking The Torah Text” (page 135) by Rabbi Shmuel Goldin, we learn the following:

“Once again, the Torah text speaks to us in eerily relevant fashion as we recognize that human experience has not changed much over the centuries. The definition of peace, which lays at the core of Yitzchak’s interchange with Avimelech, continues to be at issue today as the State of Israel struggles to live in harmony with its neighbors.

“The failure of the ‘peace process’ in the Middle East is directly traceable to the limited and hypocritical definition of ‘peace’ in the Arab world. True peace cannot take root in countries where children are raised in hate and where the daily rhetoric lauds murderers and spews venom upon the Jewish nation. …

We pray for the day when the world will embrace Yitzchak’s vision of true peace.”

This teaching, titled “Toldot, Another Covenant,” was written in 2007.

Five years ago Rabin’s daughter Dalia wrote in Seven Days, the magazine supplement of Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot: “Many people who were close to Father told me that on the eve of the murder he considered stopping the Oslo process because of the terror that was running rampant in the streets and that Arafat wasn’t delivering the goods.

“Father after all wasn’t a blind man running forward without thought. I don’t rule out the possibility that he considered also doing a reverse on our side. After all he was

someone for whom the security of the state was sacrosanct.”

Rabin was not the blind peacemaker in the model of some of the prime ministers who followed him (such as Peres, Barak and Olmert). The Oslo process that Rabin began came to be roundly criticized as it lead to deadly violence, including the second intifada, while at the same time consolidating the power of the terrorist Arafat.

No one can honestly know what would have happened if a crazy zealot had not struck him down 20 years ago. Oslo might have been over long before the intifada and Arafat might have been sent back to his hiding place in Tripoli.

One thing is for sure, though: The same liberals who created the revered image of Yitzhak Rabin vilify Benyamin Netanyahu even though in some ways Bibi’s positions today are more moderate than those of the great peace maker Rabin.

Continued from page 5 ings? Does he not see that he spends his time hunting and killing animals, which seems so foreign to the culture of kindness that is the heritage of grandfather Avraham? Does he not sense the contempt that Esau feels for the birthright and for Jewish ethical tradition, alluded to by his selling of the birthright (read responsibility?) for a pot of soup?

But then, how should one treat the wayward son? How to relate to the child who is not destined to be the leader, the chosen one?

Love him. And if he resists, love him even more!

In truth, we are all chosen; because we are all created by G-d, in his image. To be chosen does not mean that one is better; it just means we are chosen for something.

Every one of us is created for a purpose and a mission. Our challenge is to discover what that mission is. And this is not only true for individuals; it is true for nations as well. Hashem created every nation; and each nation has a purpose and a mission, just as we have ours.

When we speak of ourselves as a “chosen nation,” it simply means we have a mission that the world needs us to fulfill, a purpose for which we were created and for which we still here. Every nation, like every human being, was created by G-d, so every nation and every human being is chosen; the only question is what they are chosen for.

Yaakov is indeed given the blessing to carry on the message of the Jewish people, but that does not mean Esau is not chosen as well, for a different mission.

Just as Yishmael, the father of all the Arab tribes, was chosen for a different mission than his younger brother Yitzchak.

Four thousand years ago, Yitzchak is basically telling Yaakov and Esau: Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

Be who you are meant to be.

The Jewish people have never believed it is all about us: our dream is that one day the whole world will be one and that every human being will be seen as having been created in the image of G-d. That is why when Jews long to pray on the Temple mount, they do not wish to do so instead of our Muslim cousins, but rather alongside them.

As we read at the end of the Musaf prayers on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: “Ki beiti beit tefillah yikareh le’chol ha’amim” (“One day, My House [the Temple] will be called a House of Prayer for all nations”).

We are waiting for the day when our cousins will share that dream. Until then, while we cannot accept the actions of hate, and must fight them with all the tools at our disposal, we should never stop loving the people with whom we share this earth.

Perhaps one day, with enough love, we will yet experience the rapprochement of the burial of Avraham, when Yitzchak and Yishmael are finally able to put aside their differences and honor their father together.

As Hilton’s Israel chief, Ronnie Fortis, spoke to reporters over breakfast late last month, storm clouds began to roll in and obscure the panoramic view.

Arguably Israel’s top hotelier, Fortis is attuned to the tremors rippling through Israel’s hospitality industry as a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks generates bloody headlines and spooks tourists.

“I’d be stupid to tell you there’s no effects,” he said. “But we don’t really feel it.”

As he spoke, the storm began in earnest, and the three walls of windows began to shake loudly. But inside, breakfast went on without a hitch.

The analogy is hard to miss: even as violence rages in full view, Israeli society refuses to miss a beat.

When it comes to the international community, Israel’s messaging strategy seems paradoxical. Yes, the country faces an ideological enemy intent on destroying its way of life with all available means, including knives and cars. But is it safe to visit? Absolutely.

The strategy appears to be working. At key tourists sites like Masada and Caesaria, the tour busses are parked half a dozen deep.

In an Oct. 11 press release, the Israeli Tourism Ministry noted that the 225,000 tourists that entered the country in September is 25 percent more than last year’s figure, and 6 percent more than the year before.

And in the middle of a tumultuous October, the Ministry announced it would be partnering with Groupon to offer a trip to Israel, including accommodation and plane tickets, starting at a remarkable $990, Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

“When you shout, ‘Crisis, crisis,’ it only intensifies the external crisis and makes people hesitate whether to come to Israel,” Israeli Tourism Minister Yariv Levin told Yedioth Ahronoth. “When they see that we keep marketing Israel as usual, it projects business as usual.”

Indeed, Israel is not as dangerous as some prospective tourists may think, a ministry official said.

“We’d be really dumb to encourage you to come if we thought you’d be in danger,” Uri Steinberg, Israel’s tourism commissioner for North America, wrote in an email to JNS.org.

But the “business-as-usual” message is not echoed at the top ranks of the government.

In public addresses and often in English-language remarks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described a country under threat of nuclear annihilation by Iran, a seasonal rain of rockets from the Gaza Strip, and now, a frightening new wave of vigilante terror.

“We’re now in the midst of a campaign, an

assault, not the first one, that seeks to murder Israelis wherever they are,” Netanyahu told the World Zionist Congress in October.

Steinberg views Netanyahu’s alarmist notes as an unfortunate, if necessary, hindrance to the Tourism Ministry’s mission of convincing the world that Israel is a safe destination.

“The desperation of some messaging is

unhelpful to tourism, but it is inevitable,” he said. “After all, survival has to come first.”

It’s a conundrum Israel has long faced, said Dexter Van Zile, Christian media analyst for the Committee for Accurate in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA).

“Israel is in a propaganda war and it has a double message,” he told JNS.org. “On one hand it wants to prove that it is a place where

Jews can live a normal life…[but] it also faces an adversary that wants to destroy or exercise a veto over Jewish normalcy.”

Van Zile, a Roman Catholic who has visited Israel seven times, recalls consulting with Israeli officials in 2007 hoping to address its messaging paradox.

“They were saying, ‘Look, we want to maintain tourism but at the same time we want people to understand the threat that Israelis face,’” he said.

On both fronts, the threat is a potentially existential one. The Jewish state’s tourism industry accounted for $4.4 billion in 2012, according to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, not insignificant in an economy whose Gross Domestic Product is barely more than $300 billion.

Also important are the impressions visitors bring home with them, which give Israel a human face.

At the same time, it’s in Israel’s interest to illustrate the plight of its residents in order to cull international sympathy, Van Zile said.

“You have to basically somehow convey to people what it’s like for people to live in the Jewish state and then force people to think what it would be like to face the same threats,” he said.

The fact remains that for some residents of the Jewish state, the recent unrest exists only in headlines and television broadcasts.

“It’s frightening when you see it on TV, but in real life it’s like nothing is happening,” said Ben-Zion David, an artisan who crafts custom jewelry in the back of his studio in historic Jaffa.

David concedes that old Jaffa is sheltered from the recent violence just as it has been protected from the march of history that turned Tel Aviv into a modern metropolis.

“People don’t go to Jerusalem, so they go to [Jaffa],” he said, noting that his business has not suffered due to the ongoing violence.

The message from hoteliers and vendors about what they call “the situation” is that it could either devolve or resolve itself. For now, the directive is wait, watch, and hope for the best.

The night before the storm rolled in to Tel Aviv, Hilton celebrated its 50th anniversary in Israel with a gala featuring a performance by the Israeli philharmonic. The chain’s top Israeli executives were in attendance.

As waiters distributed appetizers, Omer Lang, the business director at the Hilton Tel Aviv, sounded a note of cautious optimism.

No cancellations yet, he said, but some groups had demurred from finalizing their bookings.

“There are some worrying signs,” he said, rapping the table with his knuckles to symbolize knocking on wood. “But mostly, everything looks good.”
