Heartfelt SKA-Israel link Two weeks after the murder of her father and brother, Sarah Techiya Litman married Ariel Beigel in Binyanei Hauma in Jerusalem and invited the country to share in her simcha. A painting made

by Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls students Tzippy Feldman, Yona Lavie, Joyce Mishaan and Melanie Sokolow was hand-delivered at the wedding last Thursday.

Meanwhile, SKA students Emily Klein and Eliana Wienerkur, along with Miri Lieber, who coordinates the Artists for Israel Committee, created a card signed by most of the

school for the family of gap-year student Ezra Schwartz a�h, who was killed in a terrorist attack. Last Friday, Emily and Eliana traveled to Sharon, Massachusetts, to deliver the card to the shiva house, hoping to bring some nechama to the

I

t seems the entire world is reeling from the heinous terror attacks in Paris. Paris. The City of Light. Of beautiful romance. Culture. And culinary delights.

And so, the entire world mourns with Paris.

But what about Beirut the day before?

What about a downed Russian plane a couple of weeks before that?

Closest to home, what about the shattered Israeli Litman family — husband and son murdered the day before their daughter and sister’s wedding that very same Friday?

Since then, only more terror: beloved high school teacher Yakov Don, son of Holocaust survivors, who made the toughest teens, despite themselves, love him; Ezra Schwartz; Doron Mizrachi, who buried his son Ziv after burying his brother Ya’alon 12 years ago, both terror victims. Who could bear the heartrend-

ing eulogy of this double-bereaved man?

Aligning with victims of terror should be, as it is in the case of blind justice, a blind compassion. Compassion for victims of terror should not be a left–right political issue, but a visceral apolitical reaction of cherishing life and freedom for all.

Terrorism, like any crime, ought to garner universal condemnation, society recoiling from the marring of norms of unwritten laws for humanity. Instead, the reactions are inconsistent and varied.

A western or European country attacked? The tragedy is on page one. Beirut? Russia? Whatever.

As the saying goes, “selective compassion.”

If so, what kind of compassion is that?

Either there is or there isn’t respect for valuing the lives of innocents. Wherever they may or may not fall on the map of the world.

We are each tinged by life experiences that lead us to identify with some more than with

others. And there are often political nuances that flesh out any given situation, even in violent circumstances. But when, just like that, innocents are attacked, we ought to consolidate our compassion and be equal in dispensing it to all victims of terror. hy does the world judge each nation’s basic right to life, differently? As a Jew, yet again, it was the loneliest feeling.

To be sure, I, with the rest of the world, cry with Paris. Along with noticing the absence of coverage for Beirut and Russia, I found myself wondering, “but why is Jewish blood different?

If anything, these Paris attacks reflect the reality that all of this terrorism is not political but, sadly, hate-driven. For the centerpiece of that famous City of Light is the Eiffel Tower.

Why didn’t the media even squeak about the Litman, Don, Schwartz and Mizrachi families?

Victims of terrorism have a plan BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT

B

elgium’s justice minister came in for a fair bit of stick this week over some injudicious observations regarding the Nov. 13 Islamist terrorist massacre in Paris.

“It’s no longer synagogues or the Jewish museums or police stations, it’s mass gatherings and public places,” said Koen Geens, as he tried to encapsulate the deadliest security dilemma that Europe has faced since the height of the Cold War. Of all the obvious terrorist targets that Geens could have picked, he chose two that were distinctly Jewish among a list of three. To some ears, it sounded suspiciously like Geens was saying that terrorist attacks on Jews were atrocities that one could, with regret, live with, so long as they didn’t then spiral into similar attacks upon the broader populace.

As distasteful as some may have found Geens’s phrasing, in technical terms, this Belgian minister—a member of a government that must be smarting from continuing references to its territory as the “weakest link” in Europe’s battle with jihadi terror— is absolutely correct. With life in Brussels mothballed for several days by credible threats of a Paris-style assault in multiple locations, the Islamists have sent the unmistakable message that no mass gathering and no public place is safe. This, the Islamists know well, is how submission starts.

Yet picking a target in response is not as it easy as one might think. Islamic State is a monstrous perversion of everything that is human, but it is also the product of a broader context; one, chiefly, in which Russian, Iranian, and Turkish regional ambitions are now starting to clash. Everyone is fighting fake wars against Islamic State: the real goal of the Russians is to preserve the Bashar alAssad regime in Damascus, the real goal of the Turks is to crush Kurdish aspirations for self-determination, and the real goal of the Iranians is to position themselves as the dominant power in the Muslim world.

In this melee, the West has signally failed to stake out its own position; namely, that the destruction of the Assad regime and the elimination of Iran’s ability to finance ter-

ror is a necessary condition for the destruction of Islamic State. We are closer, in fact, to a partnership with Iran, the most loyal backer of Assad, in the limited war being waged on Islamic State-held territory in Syria and Iraq.

Victims of terrorism I’ve been speaking with find all this deeply frustrating. “Iran is the leading state sponsor of terror. To call them a partner in fighting Islamic State will only allow them to retain the crown,” said Daniel Miller, who survived a 1997 terror attack carried out by Hamas on Jerusalem’s busy Ben Yehuda Street.

Miller strongly believes that the campaign to cut terrorism financing is the best way for those frustrated with western dithering to make their voices heard. In 2003, Miller and other victims of Iranian-backed terror won a default judgment of over $300 million against the Tehran regime, but the lack of tangible Iranian assets in the U.S. is one reason why the reparations haven’t been collected.

That’s why, in his recent testimony to Congress, Miller declared himself “shocked and horrified to learn that the terms of [the nu-

clear deal with Iran] include unfreezing more than $100 billion in Iranian oil revenues and handing it over to the party responsible for devastating the lives of so many.”

“If Iran can’t supply money, then Iran can’t sponsor terror attacks,” Miller told me. But, he added, that method can only work if sufficient resolve is shown by the U.S. government to go after Tehran’s assets—and that resolve is glaringly conspicuous by its absence.

Miller emphasizes that the sources of Islamic State funding should be pursued with the same vigor that he’s working for in the case of Iran.

It’s a view echoed by Sarri Singer, an American citizen wounded in the suicide bombing of a Jerusalem bus in 2003. “All terrorist groups are the same to me,” said Singer, whose “Strength to Strength” network offer counseling to victims of terrorist attacks. “And they all need money, which is why we have to cut off the financial supply line. I don’t want any more innocent people to have to join this club of terror victims.” hile American victims of terror can have some trust in their courts, in other countries, justice is more elusive. Nobody, for example, has been convicted for the 1994 Iranian-backed bombing of the AMIA Jewish Center in Buenos Aires, in which 85 people were murdered, while the investigation into the suspicious death of AMIA investigator Alberto Nisman in January this year has gone nowhere. Argentina now has a centrist, pragmatic president in the form of Mauricio Macri, who has already announced that he is breaking with the pro-Iranian leanings of his predecessor, but he won’t pursue the AMIA bombers on his own. The next American administration, however, could conceivably offer him a hand in doing so.

“We should be helping people in all countries, because the overall goal is to defund terrorism,” Daniel Miller told me. “I’m a civilized person, I’m not going to go and blow up an Iranian target, so the only path left to me is to go after their money. If another country experiences the kind of horrific terrorism I experienced in Israel, as Argentina did, then the more we need them as a partner.”

I can’t express the importance of this cause any more clearly than these victims of terror have done. But I can add that they have a strategy for response—and that, in this time of declining American leadership, is something worth noting.

Israel to open energy ofďŹ ce in Abu Dhabi

JERUSALEM (AP) â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Israel plans to open an ofďŹ ce focused on renewable energy in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even though the two nations have no diplomatic relations, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday.

If opened, the ofďŹ ce would be the ďŹ rst formal Israeli presence on the Arabian Peninsula in years and would come despite decades of hostility between it and its Arab neighbors.

Where that ofďŹ ce space will be in the capital remains up in the air, Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency said, though it conďŹ rmed Israel, as an agency member, has the right under its charter to work there.

Emirati Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Maryam al-Falasi said the possible ofďŹ ce opening â&#x20AC;&#x153;does not represent any change in the position of the UAE or its relations with Israel.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The functions of missions accredited to IRENA ... do not, under any circumstances, cover any other activities and do not involve any obligation upon the host country with regards to its diplomatic relations or any other relations,â&#x20AC;? al-Falasi said in a statement carried by the state-run WAM news agency.

However, under IRENAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headquarters agreement, Israel could open an ofďŹ ce in Abu Dhabi with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;same privileges and immunities as are accorded to diplomatic missions.â&#x20AC;? IRENA has set up a base in Masdar City, a government-backed clean energy campus just outside of the capital, Abu Dhabi. The 144-member organization focuses on renewable energy, something the Emirates has invested heavily into in recent years.

In the Arab world, Israel maintains embassies only in Egypt and Jordan. Israeli passport holders are barred from entering the UAE, a federation of seven emirates, though the government allows Israeli athletes, businessmen and others to enter the country from time to time for competitions and events. Last month, Israeli competitors took part in a judo tournament in Abu Dhabi without wearing their countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ&#x201A;ag.

IRENA has been part of a rapprochement between Israel and the Emirates before. In 2010, then-Israeli National Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau attended an IRENA conference in Abu Dhabi on behalf of his country, becoming the ďŹ rst Cabinet-level ofďŹ cial to visit the Emirates.

If opened, the Israel ofďŹ ce in Abu Dhabi likely would be its only ofďŹ cial outpost on the Arabian Peninsula. Qatar at one point allowed an Israeli trade ofďŹ ce to operate there before ordering it closed following a 2008-2009 Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip. An earlier Israeli trade ofďŹ ce in Oman also has been shuttered since 2000.

t is a truth universally acknowledged that we never get tired of Chanukah latkes and sufganiyot (the holiday’s deep-fried jelly doughnuts). But there’s no harm in adding some culinary variety to this year’s Festival of Lights. Pastry chef Paula Shoyer — author of “The Kosher Baker: Over 160 Dairy-Free Recipes from Traditional to Trendy,” “The Holiday Kosher Baker,” and “The New Passover Menu” — offers a doughnut recipe with a twist as well as two alternative recipes that are great for Chanukah and will satisfy any sweet tooth.

2. Break of chop the chocolate into small pieces and melt it, either over a double boiler or in the microwave oven for 45 seconds, stir, heat for 30 seconds, stir, and heat another 15 seconds if needed, until completely melted.

3. When the chocolate is melted, add the oil and sugar and whisk well. Add the soy milk, eggs, and vanilla, and whisk again. Add the salt, baking powder, and cocoa—and mix. Finally, add the flour in four parts and whisk well each time. Scoop the mixture into the pan and spread it evenly.

4. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the top looks dry and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out looking a little gooey. Cool for 30 minutes and then freeze for a minimum of one hour.

5. Place the decorations into small shallow bowls. Pull up the parchment paper to lift the brownie out of the pan. Trim 1/2 inch (1.25cm) from the sides and cut the short side of the brownie into long 3/4 to 1-inch (2 to 2.5-cm) wide strips. Cut each strip into small squares.

6. To decorate, press the top or bottom of each brownie into the desired decoration. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or freeze them for up to three months.

Doughnuts and potato latkes are the most traditional Chanukah foods. Like latkes, doughnuts are best eaten the day they are made, but even on the second day you can get good results by reheating them. To make doughnuts look festive, roll them in colored sugar.

Decorating the cookies: There are several to decorate the cookies: 1. Divide the icing among three or more bowls and color each with gel food coloring as desired. Spread about 3/4 of a teaspoon on the ďŹ&#x201A;at side of each cookie. You can also ice half the cookie with one color and half with another color.

2. Squeeze some drops of gel coloring onto a paper plate or waxed paper. Have a toothpick ready for each color. Ice about four cookies at a time with white icing. Use toothpicks to place tiny dots or short lines of different colors on the icing and then use a toothpick to create a marbled effect.

3. Let the cookies set 15 minutes. Store them covered at room temperature for up to three days, or freeze the cookies for up to three months.

ast week, after writing about Jerryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s freighting experience in Israel, I was emotionally drained, and decided to just write about a yummy favorite on Chanukkah, sufganiot (doughnuts!).

While in my dentistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce in the city a few weeks ago, one of the dental assistants asked me if I ever heard of the recipe that is said to taste exactly like the famous Krispie Kreme brand. I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, but was only too happy to have her send it to me. Unfortunately I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t credit the original chef who ďŹ gured out this recipe as the assistant didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have that information. In any event, I was all set to send the article in a day early, but decided instead Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d send it in the morning. And then the fun began.

I belong to two football pools. One a suicide pool â&#x20AC;&#x201D; each week you enter a team you think will have best chance of winning; if the team wins, you move onto next week, and so on till only one person remains. Only catch is, once you pick a team, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pick them again. It gets tougher as the weeks go by. This season there were many upsets and by the 12th week, only three of us were left. That in itself was a miracle. What were the chances, that I, a middle aged Jewish mom would even last a few weeks in a football pool. But I did. And so on Sunday, I watched football all day. I watched my pick, the Chiefs, losing most of the game until the last quarter, when they went ahead and won. Now all I had to hope for were losses by the Jaguars and Patriots. That would leave me winner of the pool.

The Jaguars, favored to win, lost. Do I dare

hope that the Patriots â&#x20AC;&#x201D; undefeated, 10-0 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; would lose as well later that night?

I was going to choose them in my other pool where I had to pick winners for each game. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m tied for second in that pool. I was tied for third in that pool. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to take a chance of picking the opposing team and losing in my other pool so I was going to pick the Patriots for that pool but root for the Broncos.

After all a Patriot loss would mean I would win the suicide pool. Jerry said he would pick the Broncos (he hates the Patriots) for my other pool. I told him everyone in the other pool will pick them and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll slide down a notch, but I listened to him and picked the Broncos.

Of course the Patriots had an early lead and I shouted at Jerry, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why do I listen to you? You think the Giants are going to win every week!â&#x20AC;?

Then I found out the Broncos didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have this quarterback. I usually research that but since it was a last minute pick I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Jerry would pay dearly for this.

Things got close and it looked like we were going win. But of course, as they always do, the Patriots kicked a ďŹ eld goal in the last seconds of regulation to tie the game. We were experiencing our own version of Bradyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s DeďŹ&#x201A;ate Gate.

Now I had no hope. Patriots had the ball ďŹ rst. The only question I had, was not if they would win, but how. Instead, the Broncos scored a brilliantly exciting touchdown in the driving snow. That spawned spontaneous singing and dancing around our house at midnight, as Jerry and I celebrated screaming with joy. I had just won ďŹ rst place in the suicide pool and also slid into a tie for second place in my other pool, with ďŹ ve weeks to go. I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure what made Jerry happier, me winning the pool or the Patriots losing in dramatic fashion, which Jerry believed was justice for the heartache they caused him, two weeks before when they

tore his heart out by beating his beloved Giants with a last-second ďŹ eld goal.

Icing on the cake: One more team is now defeated, leaving only the Panthers. Hopefully they lose soon so my â&#x20AC;&#x2122;72 Dolphins can pop the bubbly and celebrate being the only team to go undefeated all he way through the Super Bowl.

For anyone who thinks Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a girly girl, this should clear that up. From the miracle of me wining my football pool, to the miracle of the oil burning eight days and nightsâ&#x20AC;Ś

This recipe makes 2 dozen donuts Ingredients: 2 (1/4 ounce) packages yeast , 1/6 cup very warm water 1-1/2 cups water, 1/2 cup sugar , 1 tsp salt 2 eggs 1/6 cup shortening , 5 cups all-purpose ďŹ&#x201A;our , canola oil for frying.

Directions: Mix yeast and warm water and let it rise. Combine the yeast mixture, water, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening and1 cup of the ďŹ&#x201A;our. Beat on low for 30 seconds, then on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Carefully stir in remaining ďŹ&#x201A;our until smooth. Cover and let rise until doubled, about an hour. After the dough has risen, turn dough onto ďŹ&#x201A;oured surface; roll around lightly to coat with ďŹ&#x201A;our. Gently roll dough 1/2-inch thick with ďŹ&#x201A;oured rolling pin. Cut with ďŹ&#x201A;oured doughnut cutter. Separate donuts and holes, as they take different frying times. Cover and let rise until double, 30-40 minutes. Use a deep pan to heat the oil. Heat oil to 350F (use a thermometer). Carefully place the donuts in the oil. Cook on each side for about one minute. Use chopsticks to ďŹ&#x201A;ip the sufganiot and remove them from the oil. Place sufganiot on a rack (or paper towels) to drain.

Glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar , 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla, 6 tablespoons milk or water. Add milk (or water) and vanilla into the powdered sugar until smooth. Add milk (or water) until desired consistency is reached. To make chocolate glaze, melt 6 ounces of chocolate. After removing sufganiot and draining them, dip them in the glaze and set them on a rack to dry.

JEWISH STAR Schools Rav Gigi of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Gushâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; inspires Rambam talmidim Last week, the boys at Rambam Mesivta in Lawrence were privileged to hear a surprise shiur by Rav Baruch Gigi, rosh yeshiva at Yeshivat Har Etzion. Rav Gigi stopped by Rambam during his busy trip to New York because of the longstanding relationship that Rambam has with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gush,â&#x20AC;? said Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman, rosh mesivta.

Rav Gigi spoke about the lessons to be learnt from Yakov Avinu, who worked 24/6 for Laban. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Torah tells us the Yakov endured the cold of winter and the heat of summer and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep for many years. How is such a thing possible â&#x20AC;&#x201D; we know it is impossible to go three days without sleep,â&#x20AC;? asked Rav Gigi.

Rav Gigi explained that the Torah means to tell us about personal responsibility. Yakov never slept because his responsibility was always with him, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was always on his head.â&#x20AC;?

Continuing, Rav Gigi mentioned that the Gemara derives from the Torahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s account the extent by which a shomer must watch an object. According to one opinion, a paid watchman must stay with the object all the time and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even lock it up safely without being physically present. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our job is to be responsible and serve Hashem 24/ 7,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Rav Gigi recounted that in the early days of the yeshiva, Rav Aharon Lichtenstein ztâ&#x20AC;?l used to play basketball with the talimidm and â&#x20AC;&#x153;always made sure to run up and down the court â&#x20AC;&#x201D; he used to chastise the boys who waited under the basket, saying that they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t putting forth their full effort.â&#x20AC;?

Rav Gigiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s message echoed that of Chazal who taught, â&#x20AC;&#x153;lefum tzara agra,â&#x20AC;? in accordance with effort is the reward.â&#x20AC;?

The talmidim truly enjoyed the shiur and were inspired by his words.

CAHAL kids learn about Thanksgiving â&#x20AC;Ś at HANC Children in the CAHAL kindergarten class at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County have been learning about the Pilgrims who came to America aboard the MayďŹ&#x201A;ower and the hardships they suffered on their journey.

The children experienced daily life in a Pilgrim village by reading library books, making their own butter which they spread on their Shabbos challah and crackers, and by watching videos from the living museum village at Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts. They were in awe of how sparse and difďŹ cult Pilgrim life was and how many chores the children had to perform on a daily basis. The class compared and contrasted the clothing, hair styles, foods and homes of the Pilgrims to those of the Native Americans as well as to those in their own lives.

In the spirit of giving thanks to those who help us, the children invited their therapists to a sumptuous feast on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Each child made a big white Pilgrim collar and hat as well as a Na-

tive American vest, which they fringed and sponge painted; a headband which they decorated with stickers in patterns they created, and a colorful wooden beaded necklace.

They greeted their guests in costume and escorted them to the tables which were laden with foods that each participant child brought for the feast. While they had turkey, corn, cranberry sauce, applesauce and potatoes, the favorite on the menu was the pumpkin mufďŹ ns which they baked from scratch.

After entertaining their guests with holiday songs, the children changed costumes and walked throughout the school giving out pumpkin mufďŹ ns to others who help daily, such as the principal, nurse, custodians, and specialty teachers in the school. To ďŹ nish off the day of fun, they played â&#x20AC;&#x153;Duck, Duck, Turkeyâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pin the Hat on the Turkey,â&#x20AC;? and then marched around with their kindergarten friends in the mainstream buddy class, sharing their songs to the beat of their Indian drums.

Shalhevet alumnae dinner reunion in Yerushalayim The annual Midreshet Shalhevet Israel alumnae reunion took place Sunday night in Yerushalayim, with the young women meeting their Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman, for dinner at the popular CafĂŠ Rimon.

Although the girls have stayed in touch, and see each other on a regular basis, they were excited to see their Rav and catch up with their high school friends.

Over dinner, there was an active discussion with questions raised on the relationship from Torah to science, so, Rabbi Friedman gave an impromptu mini shiur on the halachic aspects comparing ner Chanukah to ner shabbat and the hashkaďŹ c symbolosim of each, based on the Rav ztl.

The key point Rabbi Friedman made is that a person has the ability to reach out and ďŹ nd Hashem both in the best of situations and in the most challenging. Ner Chanukah is a light from which we can derive no ben-

The Rav compared it to a twinkling star far away, outside is dark but we know that in the great distance, Hashem, the Creator of the star, beckons us to come closer to him.

As our struggle continues, no time for comfort RABBI BINNY FREEDMAN THE HEART OF JERUSALEM

R

eb Moshe Chaim Tiefenbrun was one of the personalities I grew up with, and one of the two people who first introduced me to nusach, the beautiful melodies of our liturgy and prayer. He was a Holocaust survivor who always had a tractate of the Talmud under his arm, and I recall hearing the story of his terrible loss.

When the war broke out and the Nazis were approaching his village in Poland, fearing he might be taken to the German army or a labor battalion (as had been the Russians’ way for generations) he, along with most of the other young men of his village, escaped into the forest. He eventually made his way to Shanghai where he waited out the war. Six years later, on the day the Allies declared victory over the Germans, Reb Moshe Chaim found out what had happened to his young wife and two little children. The day after he escaped, they had all been taken out to the forest and murdered along with the rest of his village. It had never occurred to him, or any of them, that a civilized nation would or even could do such a thing.

He eventually moved to the United States and remarried and had two children with whom I grew up on Manhattan’s West Side. Many years later he and his wife made aliyah to Efrat where I eventually made my home as well.

One year I happened to arrive for Efrat’s annual Holocaust memorial day ceremony exactly on time (which in Israel means early) and he was the only other person there so I struck up a conversation. I expressed my

He was incredulous at the suggestion, and shared that he had not slept a good night’s sleep since the Holocaust, for there was nothing that could comfort him. Nearly 20 years later I am still thinking about that conversation. hat prevents a person from being comforted? Is there a lesson to be learned as to how one can find comfort in difficult situations?

A week after the horrendous events that took Rav Yaakov Don and Ezra Schwartz from us, how can we find comfort, as individuals and as a people, with no end in sight to the conflict with terror and Muslim fundamentalism?

In this week’s parsha, no less than Yaakov himself undergos a similar struggle as he refuses to be comforted when learning of what he presumably assumes is his beloved son Joseph’s death. When the brothers show Yaakov the famous technicolor coat of Joseph, dipped in blood, he refuses to be comforted (Bereishit 37: 35).

It is rare in the Torah for a person to be beyond console. When Avraham loses his beloved wife Sarah, he eventually rises from his mourning (Bereishit 23:3) and seems to move on, burying his dead and then setting in motion the plan to find a wife for his son Yitzchak.

And we do not find Yitzchak, or for that matter Moshe or Aaron, mourning without consolation. So what is it about the story of Yaakov and Joseph that eludes comfort?

Yaakub in 1982, once shared with me his opinion that Yaakov could not be comforted because he had no closure. Deep down, Yaakov was not sure if his son Joseph was dead or alive, and the lack of closure, of a proper goodbye, of knowing he has been buried, prevents a person from being able to move on.

The Midrash quoted by Rashi (34:35) says human nature allows us to forget (meaning the pain will abate somewhat) those who die, but not those who are alive (even if we think they are dead), perhaps because we still hope for their return, having not seen conclusive evidence they are actually dead. And yet, there is no inability to be comforted after Eliahu the prophet’s ascension to heaven, despite his never being buried, nor for that matter do we find this in the case of Chanoch (Bereishit 5:24) one of the descendants of Adam, who seems to simply “disappear.” And when King David loses his baby son (Shmuel II 12) he mourns, and is able to not only be comforted but comfort his wife Batsheva as well. And then he is able to move on.

Why can Yaakov find no comfort in his remaining 11 children?

Another biblical character who cannot be comforted is Rachel, Yaakov’s beloved wife.

The prophet Jeremiah shares (31; 15:17) that a voice is heard from on high, the sound of Rachel, who cannot (or refuses to be) comforted as she is weeping for her children who are gone; the Temple has been destroyed and the Jewish nation is gone, sold into Babylonian slavery. What is the connection between the story of Yaakov’s lost son Joseph, and the exiled Jewish people?

Even so, shouldn’t his faith be enough to sustain him, doesn’t he know that Hashem has a plan even if its meaning eludes us? And why is Rachel not comforted as the Jewish people are sent into exile — doesn’t she know they will one day return?

Perhaps what Yaakov was struggling with was the same thing Reb Moshe Chaim struggled with 4,000 years later; not so much G-d’s plan as his own. His question was not “where was G-d” but rather where was I? Sixty years after the Holocaust, he struggled with how he could have run off into the forest leaving his wife and children to be murdered. Yaakov’s question, in confronting the loss of his beloved Joseph was not where is Joseph, or even where is G-d, but rather, “where was I?” Sensing there was more to the story than a wild animal’s attack, and understanding the conflict the brothers had with Joseph, perhaps Yaakov was struggling with his own complicity and responsibility. Could he have done a better job at teaching his sons to love each other?

It behooves us to struggle with this same question today. As innocent Jewish teens and children are stabbed and murdered in Israel’s streets and terror has reared its ugly head all over the world — from Paris to Kenya, Brussels to Mali. Can we be comforted? Are we too comfortable? The prophet Yirmiyahu suggests Rachel cannot be comforted because we still have a lot of work to do.

What that work is and how we can come closer to the world of peace for which we all yearn is at the very least something with which we should struggle. And in this struggle, we should indeed not be comforted.

With Chanukah upon us, the Kosher Bookworm once again offers suggestions for holiday readings and gift giving.

“The Seven Fruits of the Land of Israel: With their Mystical and Medicinal Properties,”

by Chana Bracha Siegelbaum (Menorah Books 2015) details the various fruits that are of a religious and mystical significance in our Jewish tradition. Also, each is of significance in their listings in Perek Shira — in this essay’s case, olives, and olive oil, for the Chanukah menorah, and in the making of … latkes!

In her introduction, the author states that, “I hope that learning about the holy fruits of Israel will help connect us to the Land of Israel and to the unique Torah emanating from the Holy Land. The metaphor of fruit is often employed for new insights in the Torah (chidushim).”

“Each of the fruits of Israel imparts its own vital Torah, raising our consciousness and spirit in preparation for the final redemption when, ‘There shall come forth a shoot from the stem of Yishai, and a branch shall grow forth from its roots’,” Siegelbaum continues.

As noted above, due to the upcoming holiday, this week’s essay presents Siegelbaum’s eloquent take on the religious value of the olive.

“The olive tree does not have its own particular song in Perek Shirah. However, the olive includes the song of all the trees of the forest, just as the sefirah of Yesod — foundation includes all the sefirot above it.

Even if you are not spiritually mystically inclined, these teachings, as well as others included in this work are more than worth your reading, and gift giving, to be shared by all.

In “Torah To-Go: Chanukah 5776,” there is a fascinating essay entitled, “ Illuminating the light of Chanukah” by Hadassah Tirschwell of Yeshiva University’s high school for girls, wherein she teaches several relevant historical factors that serve as the basic elements in the observance of this holiday, especially, this year!

Consider just one sample from her valued teachings: “The Defining Miracle of Chanukah.”

“Every day of Chanukah, we insert the paragraph of Al Hanissim in benching and Shemoneh Esrei. The paragraph nicely summarizes the story of Chanukah – the Chashmona’i military victory over the Greek forces the subsequent purification of the Beis Hamikdash, and the lighting of the Menorah. The victory of the many Greeks [who] were defeated by the few Chashmona’im is a focus of the paragraph, as it was a miraculous deliverance that was clearly orchestrated by G-d.

“However, the Gemara in Shabbos 21b, highlights an entirely different event as the central miracle of our Chanukah commemoration: “Mai Chanukah? What is [the reason of] Chanukah? For when the Greeks entered the Temple,

they defiled all the oils therein, and when the Hasmonean dynasty prevailed and defeated them, they made a search and found only one cruse of oil which had the seal of the High Priest, which contain oil sufficient for one day’s lighting only; yet a miracle was wrought and they lit the lamp for eight days.”

Tirschwell teaches us that, “According to the Gemara, the miracle of the long-lasting oil is the defining miracle of Chanukah, the essence of the holiday.

If so, when we seek to understand the relevance of the Chanukah miracle in our current times, we must delve into the messages of the long-lasting oil of the Beis Hamikdash. Through appreciating the miracle of the long-lasting oil, we can then search for the connection to modern-day Jewish life.”

At the end of her essay the author concludes with the following rather optimistic observation: “The true miracle of the Chanukah story was the triumph of light over darkness, of closeness over distance, of spirituality over apathy. As we light our menorahs this year, let us pray for the same triumphs, with renewed connection and reinvigorated commitment in our times —Bayamim haheim ba’zeman hazeh.”

The author, a native of Denmark, founder and director of Midreshet B’erot Bat Avin — Holistic Torah for Women on the Land, creates curricula emphasizing women’s spiritual empowerment through traditional Torah values.

She teaches us the following regarding “The Menorah, The Emblem of Israel:” “It is evidently by Divine Providence that the secular State of Israel chose as its emblem the image of the Menorah, framed by two olive branches. This image mirrors the prophecy of Zechariah, who had a vision of ‘a golden menorah … and two olive trees by it, one upon its right side, and the other upon its left side.’ The Menorah, lit every evening by the Kohanim, would cause the Shechina to enter the Tabernacle and Temple. Although G-d has no need for our light, the Menorah was lit in the House of G-d, for the sake of the honor of the temple, where the Shechinah dwelled. The Menorah would elevate Israel before the nations, who exclaimed: “How can Israel light before G-d, Who gives light to all?’ Therefore, the emblem of the State of Israel symbolizes how the nation of Israel is meant to be a vessel for the in-dwelling presence of the Shechinah, in our mission to be ‘a light unto the nations.’ The Jewish nation is to accomplish this mission by example rather than force, as the prophet teaches: ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit, says the G-d of Hosts’.”

Please consider the following as it applies to the feast of Chanukah: “Fruit of Redemption.”

“The olive tree, which is the first tree recorded after the destruction of the flood, is the fruit of redemption. Its foliage is evergreen and its oil lights eternally, even during exile through the holy menorah of Chanukah. The bitterness of the olive alludes to a higher realm beyond what can be revealed as sweet in this world.

Ancient Jewish community endures in Tunisia DJERBA, Tunisia (AP) â&#x20AC;&#x201D; When school lets out, the streets around the ancient synagogue on this Tunisian island ďŹ ll with rambunctious boys wearing kippahs and girls in long skirts, shouting to each other in Hebrew, Arabic and French.

The Jewish community in the resort island of Djerba traces its roots all the way back to Babylonian exile of 586 B.C., and is one of the few communities of its kind to have survived the turmoil around the creation of Israel, when more than 800,000 Jews across the Arab world either emigrated or were driven from their homes.

Here the faithful pray at the La Ghriba synagogue â&#x20AC;&#x201D; widely believed to be Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest â&#x20AC;&#x201D; beneath intricate tile walls bearing blue and yellow geometric shapes that would not seem out of place at a mosque. The synagogueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name can be translated as â&#x20AC;&#x153;strangeâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;miraculous.â&#x20AC;?

The surrounding streets include a kosher butcher, a bakery that sells a traditional tunaďŹ lled pastry known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;brikâ&#x20AC;? and schools that teach lessons in Hebrew, French and Arabic. During the annual Lag BaOmer festival, the streets throng with Jewish pilgrims who venerate Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a second-century mystic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re almost 1,500 now across the country, maybe fewer than residents of a building in New York,â&#x20AC;? says Jacob LaLoush, 55, the

Tunisiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewish population has dwindled from 100,000 in 1956, when the country won independence from France, to less than 1,500, mainly as a result of emigration to France and Israel. But unlike in much of the rest of the Arab world, Tunisian Jews have seen little direct persecution and have only rarely been targeted by extremists.

LaLoush says their situation is â&#x20AC;&#x153;completely different from other Arab countries, where there were laws and policies that forced the Jewish communities out.â&#x20AC;? But he says there have been times when they were â&#x20AC;&#x153;not pushed out of Tunis, but were shown the doors.â&#x20AC;?

A suicide truck bombing carried out by alQaida outside the Djerba synagogue in 2002 killed 19 people, mainly German tourists.

To this day the neighborhood and the synagogue are heavily guarded by police. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have coexisted with our Muslim friends for a long time. We share food, music and tradition,â&#x20AC;? said Ariel Houri, who works in his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s furniture shop in Djerba. As to the occasional friction, â&#x20AC;&#x153;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mostly the hotheaded youth, they get affected by the news.

But the older ones are still sitting in cafes, sharing drinks every day.â&#x20AC;?

OU wants Congress to OK Every Student Succeeds Act The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America is calling on Congress to pass the Every Student Succeeds Act when it comes to the ďŹ&#x201A;oor of the House of Representatives this week.

This legislation will reauthorize and revise the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which funds local public school districts for speciďŹ c purposes, such as remedial reading, teacher training, speech and occupational therapy. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every Student Succeeds Actâ&#x20AC;? represents the ďŹ rst major reform to ESEA since 2001, when â&#x20AC;&#x153;No Child Left Behindâ&#x20AC;? was passed, and the ďŹ rst reauthorization to ESEA since 2007.

While school districts are mandated by law to deliver ESEA services to all students, including those in non-public schools, school districts often fail to implement these programs. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every Student Succeeds Actâ&#x20AC;? includes recommendations from the OU that will greatly improve ESEAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s distribution of equitable services for all students.

Importantly, state education ofďŹ cials will be required to set aside funds for equitable services in private schools and ensure these funds serve eligible children in private schools. Local ofďŹ cials will also be required to distribute

funds to qualiďŹ ed private schools in the ďŹ scal year in which the funds were received, which will diminish the potential for waste or misuse of funds that are meant to go to students.

To help ensure this equity for private school students and teachers, the bill will require the state education agency to create an ombudsman position to monitor and enforce the equitable services provision. Private schools will thus have an advocate within the state agency administering the education policy.

The Act also strengthens and streamlines complaint procedures by which private school students can register complaints with the state or federal education agency, and enforces a timeline by which the state must respond.

These are just a few of the many common sense and fair reforms that make it imperative for Congress to pass this education bill.

JERUSALEM (AP) â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Israel operates inside Syria â&#x20AC;&#x153;from time to timeâ&#x20AC;? to prevent sophisticated weapons from reaching its enemies in Lebanon, Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prime minister said Tuesday, in the strongest admission yet of his countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s involvement in the civil war.

Israel is widely thought to have carried out a number of airstrikes in Syria that have targeted advanced weapons systems, including Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles and Iranian-made missiles, believed to be destined for the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah militant group. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We operate in Syria from time to time to prevent it from becoming a front against us, a

second terror front against us,â&#x20AC;? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a conference in the northern Israeli city of Acre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are also acting of course to prevent the transfer of deadly weapons from Syria to Lebanon in particular and we will continue to do so,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Netanyahuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarks come as Israel and Russia have established a mechanism meant to coordinate between their air forces in Syria. Russia recently began carrying out airstrikes there to help Syrian President Bashar Assad in his battle against Islamic militants and other rebels.

Hide Your Wallets: Obamacare wants your cash!

bamacare is beginning to fall apart and the federal government is going to look to American taxpayers to fund putting it back together.

Last Wednesday United Healthcare announced it lost $425 million on its policies sold via the Affordable Care Act exchanges, and they might back out of selling individual health plans via the exchanges all together after 2016. The insurerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s withdrawal from the Obamacare exchanges would force 540,000 Americans to ďŹ nd coverage from another provider.

On top of the United Healthcare news is the fact 12 out of the original 23 state-run exchanges have bitten the dust. If other big insurance companies follow United HealthCare out the door, the loss could potentially destabilize the entire individual marketplace.

And they just might. U.S. insurers had to absorb nearly $2.9 billion in unexpected medical expenses from their customers in Obamacareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exchanges in 2014, according to new data from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Obamacare is killing the heath insurance industry, but help for health insurers is on the way â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and it will be coming out the pockets of American taxpayers via higher insurance rates and a federal bailout. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many insurers have requested premium increases of 20% to 40% for next year,â&#x20AC;? reports the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In August, Blue Cross Blue Shield secured approval in Tennessee for a 36.3% price hike, while Oregon OKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d a 25.6% increase for Moda Health Plan.â&#x20AC;?

The report continues: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even these premium increases are mild compared with whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming when

the risk corridor provision and other stopgaps expire. â&#x20AC;Ś A recent University of Minnesota study found that after 2016, the cheapest plans would experience some of the most dramatic premium increases. Families who purchased â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bronzeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; plans on the exchanges could see 45% increases. Some unlucky individuals could see their premiums shoot up 96%.â&#x20AC;?

But Uncle Sam is going to supplement the increased rates to help the insurance companies keep up. The Obama Department of Health and Humans Services (HHS) is promising insurance companies that taxpayers will help them out. The day after United Healthcare made its announcement, HHS issued a letter to insurance companies recognizing the 2014 shortfalls and declaring that the U.S. Government needs to make good: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the event of a shortfall for the 2016 pro-

gram year, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will explore other sources of funding for risk corridors payments, subject to the availability of appropriations. This includes working with Congress on the necessary funding for outstanding risk corridors payments.â&#x20AC;? When someone in the government says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Explore other sources of fundingâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;working with Congress on the necessary funding,â&#x20AC;? itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to hide your wallet because that â&#x20AC;&#x153;fundingâ&#x20AC;? is going to come from the taxpayers. isk corridors were created by the Obamacare bill that are meant to redistribute money (sound familiar?) from insurance companies that make a bigger proďŹ t from the healthcare exchange plans than expected, to companies that lost money on their exchange plans.

The problem with the risk corridor in 2014 was that too many companies lost money â&#x20AC;&#x201D; so, there wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough money to cover everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s losses (the same is anticipated for 2015). HHS is promising a bailout or, in HHS language, it will work with Congress to get more money for the risk corridors in order to cut insurance companies losses.

Robert Laszewski, president of consultancy Health Policy and Strategy Associates in Virginia, told CNBC that â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Obamacare business model doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work [and] has got to be retooled.â&#x20AC;?

According to Nathan Nascimento, senior policy adviser for Freedom Partners: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We already knew that this Administration has no problem with putting special interests ahead of Americansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; health care, but yet another bailout for insurance companies on the backs of taxpayers only throws more good money after bad. Washingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ&#x201A;awed onesize-ďŹ ts-all approach to health care has failed, leading to plan cancelations, skyrocketing premium and out-of-pocket costs, and instability for American families and business. The solution is to get government out of the way, not dig the hole even deeper.â&#x20AC;?

Some politicians, such as Bernie Sanders, would say the problems with Obamacare means we should be replacing it with a single-payer system such as is found in Canada, Great Britain and other countries where people with extreme medical issues (and who can afford it) travel to the United States to get their medical care.

Supporters of Obamacare are in denial. Much higher heath insurance premiums, insurance company losses needing a federal bailout, and the death of 12 of the 23 healthcare exchanges, add up to one inconvenient fact: Obamacare is failing.

Sadly, it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the politicians who forced the Affordable Care Act down the American taxpayerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collective throats reaching into their pockets to pay for the Obamacare failures. It will be the rest of us â&#x20AC;&#x201D; average American families, our children, and eventually our grandchildren â&#x20AC;&#x201D; who will be paying for this unmitigated disaster.

T

he Talmud tells us that when Yosef was confronted by the temptress, his master Potipharâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife, he was able to control himself and overcome her advances because he saw his father Yaakovâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s image appear â&#x20AC;&#x153;in the window.â&#x20AC;? Why is this signifcant? Could it not just appear in front of him like a vision, or perhaps as a conscience on the shoulder countering the little red guy who is telling him to sin?

The answer lies in the Hebrew word for window: chalon.

Numerous words in Hebrew have the letters ches and lamed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; chalon, chulin, chalal.

Even Potipharâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife claimed she was another word: cholah.

All of these words share the notion of emptiness or a void. The Biblical chalon was an empty, open spot in the wall. Chulin: Something emptied of kedusha, it cannot be used for holy activities, such as those which take place in the Temple. Chalal (in the sense of a corpse): A body emptied of life. Chalal can also refer to a Kohen divested of holiness.

A cholah is a person who is not completely himself or herself. Even the word chalom (dream), which plays such prominence in these parshas, is indicative of a person who has not yet achieved the things he or she aspires to achieve in life.

It is easy to fall into a trap of doing the wrong thing when there is a feeling of emptiness in life â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is wrong, and I probably shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be doing it, but it makes me feel good, and I need that right now.â&#x20AC;? Or weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll excuse errors in judgment saying things like, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t myself,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what I was thinking,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I already did one thing wrong, so I may as well enjoy myself while Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m already in G-dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doghouse.â&#x20AC;?

We can certainly appreciate that Yosefâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s readiness to sin with Potipharâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife stemmed from this sense of emptiness. He had lost everything in life and was betrayed by his own brothers!

In an article addressing why Yosef did not write a letter to his father from Egypt once he had the opportunity, Rabbi Yoel Bin Nun depicts Yosefâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s despair in the following way: â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one is coming! Why did my father send me to see my brothers? Why did they take off my coat when I got to them? Why did they throw me in a pit? Did my father not know

how dangerous Shimon and Levi could be?

What did the brothers tell him when they got home?â&#x20AC;?

Perhaps sinning with her would enable Yosef to reclaim his lost prominence. Think of the doors in Egyptian society she could open for him if he would fulďŹ ll her wishes! And her claiming to be a cholah was code language to give her the excuse to stay home, to also be missing something so that Yosef could ďŹ ll the void in her life, in her empty relationship with her husband â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who may have been successful and vain, but was no match for the

young, vibrant and vigorous Yosef.

How many people have fallen on account of such thought processes?

Yaakov appeared to Yosef in the chalon, in the emptiness. The message was that the way to counteract sin is to ďŹ ll the void, the emptiness, with kedusha, with a connection to G-d. Yosef could not just see his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face anywhere, it had to be the window, the portal through which the world might see transgressions; in the emptiness, in the symbolic void in his life, he saw his father and he saw hope. He envisioned that his father did not sell him down the river, that when his father said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A beast has torn him up â&#x20AC;Ś I will descend to Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ol to my son,â&#x20AC;? he referred to the wife of Potiphar trying to seduce Yosef,

and his own image saving Yosef from sin.

One who has a sense of purpose and meaning that comes from kedusha has ďŹ lled the void in his life and is guarded against sin.

This Sunday night, as we begin Chanukah, many of us will place the Menorah, if we can, in the chalon. We make a clear statement that â&#x20AC;&#x153;this is a Jewish home.â&#x20AC;? Hopefully we will be allowing the light of the menorah that is in the window represent for us all that it should: the Torah, the light of our lives, the ďŹ&#x201A;ame that keeps us going.

When we can, we put it near the window so the void we may have in our lives can be ďŹ lled with a sense of meaning and purpose.

May this holiday of lights serve as an inspiration to all of us, to help us ďŹ ll our lives with joy and meaning.

Rediscovering Czeck cemetery scattered in war

By Karel Janicek PROSTEJOV, Czech Republic (AP) — There was no mistaking what the stone slab was, only the spot where it lay was somehow not fitting. Instead of marking a place of the departed, the tombstone served as a doormat to a henhouse in a small Czech village.

Confronting the dark legacy of the Holocaust, a small team of researchers has been working to reassemble a Jewish cemetery in the eastern city of Prostejov that was destroyed during the Nazi occupation. The Nazi death machine wipe out 6 million Jews in the Holocaust, wiping out a third of world Jewry — and didn’t even let those already dead rest in peace.

The discovery of Prostejov’s lost graveyard was a result of efforts to find roughly 2,000 tombstones that were desecrated and disappeared more than 70 years ago in what was then Czechoslovakia. Dozens of Jewish cemeteries faced the same eradication as the one in Prostejov.

Turned upside down and after a bit of cleaning, the tombstone found at the entrance to the henhouse, in a village outside Prostejov, revealed a Hebrew inscription that was hidden for decades. Bearing the name Juli Rosenthal, it reads: “Here lies a modest and righteous woman, Mrs. Yittel, the wife of our dear teacher Mr. Leib Rosenthal, may he be long alive, who passed away 76 years old.”

New York philanthropist Louis Kestenbaum first drew attention to the cemetery when he was looking for the tomb of Prostejov Rabbi Zvi Horowitz, who died in 1816.

“His writings are still revered in Jewish communities throughout the world,” Kestenbaum told The Associated Press by email. “For Rabbi Horowitz and other great rabbis from the region, Prostejov is known as a major seat of Jewish learning and culture. This makes the cemetery an important monument in both Jewish and Czech history.”

Indeed, Prostejov was for centuries home to one of the most significant Jewish communities in the eastern part of the country known as Moravia. The Jewish philosopher Edmund Husserl was born here, and his relatives were buried at the town’s Jewish cemetery, as were family members of celebrated author Stefan Zweig.

The local Jews used the cemetery from 1801 until the beginning of the 20th century. Before the Nazis took over, the Jewish

community rejected proposals from City Hall to sell the site. Now Goldberg is expanding his vision for medical clowning, embracing another ailing community: senior citizens. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not an entertainment troupe,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Were trying to create meaningful creative engagement with people.â&#x20AC;?

Lev Leytzan doctors and clowns recently launched a pilot geriatric patient-focused program called â&#x20AC;&#x153;ElderHearts.â&#x20AC;? The stated goal is to provide â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and dementia patients with interactive experiences designed to help them reconnect with the world and alleviate the loneliness and isolation they feel.â&#x20AC;? Before tackling the most severely affected patients, however, Lev Leytzan is taking a more general approach, assessing the effectiveness of its methodology.

The clowns work in dyads. They enter only with the patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s permission, and they allow the patient or the doctor to lead off. To establish a familiar role, the clowns wear vintage cos-

tumes and use props from the 1930s through the 1950s, artifacts that evoke rich memories. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We join them in their reality, [utilizing] problem-solving, reminiscence, and improvisation,â&#x20AC;? Goldberg explains. When â&#x20AC;&#x153;one Al-

The medical and psychosocial teams (graduate and doctoral students) at the Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation in Jamaica, Queens, observe the Lev Leytzan clowns and collect data. â&#x20AC;&#x153;ElderHeartsâ&#x20AC;? may require adjustments in strategy and narrower parameters before an ofďŹ cial study like the one conducted in Israel yields meaningful quantitative data. But in the meantime, the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s troupe of students, doctors, and volunteers are at the very least putting smiles on the faces of senior citizens in need. Israel Cancer Reserach Fund celebrates 40 years

By Polly Van Raalte Since the summer of 1999 I have been involved with the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF). Originally I was trying to ďŹ nd a cure for my late uncle, Michael Ressner, and just trying to share what ICRF in Los Angeles, along with all the ICRF chapters, were accomplishing in the U.S., Canada and Israel.

At the 1999 ICRF luncheon in Beverly Hills I met Leah Susskind, a lovely woman from New York, who told me that there was a New York chapter and I must attend their events. For over 16 years I have been thrilled to be able to cover events in the New York area.

What is the ICRF? It is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading nonproďŹ t organization dedicated to supporting cancer research in Israel. ICRF awards grants to support the research of Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best scientists.

And now it is 40 years old, celebrating with a Tower of Hope Gala in Manhattan that honored ICRFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s founders and supporters and four decades of life-saving research at the amazing.

Also instrumental in the early days of ICRF were the late George Blumenthal and Dr. Yashar Hirshaut. Both Five Towners have been giants for ICRF. I am always happy to meet Yashar and his lovely wife, Perie. It was a pleasure to meet some of the Blumenthal family members.

There were lists and lists of those from the last 40 years who have helped ICRF either medically or ďŹ nancially. I must single out the incredible Ben Brafman, a Lawrence resident who served as our master of ceremonies. He truly is more than a celebrity lawyer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a wonderful man who gives so much for ICRF. Kudos to Ben Brafman for his inspiring words.

ing his ďŹ rst wife Barbara, Ken has directed his time and energy to ďŹ nding a cure for pancreatic cancer. Louis also works hard for ICRF in Florida. They met and mingled with everyone.

One year I was able to meet the two ICRFfunded scientists, Dr. Aaron Ciechanover and Dr. Avram Hershko, who received the Nobel Prize in science in 2004. They have helped so many with their ďŹ ndings. Another year I met Tony Danza and Judith Light at an ICRF Gala at the Plaza Hotel. It was a fun evening.

There have been many since then, too numerous to mention.

Besides the cocktail hour and gala dinner, we were entertained by humorist Brad Zimmerman from â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Son the Waiter, A Jewish Tragedy.â&#x20AC;? And the New York Visions of young professionals for ICRF touched our hearts as they strive to create greater awareness within their peer group.

So many were on hand from our neck of the woods, including Rabbi Kenneth Hain of Congregation Beth Sholom, Natalie and Danny Hiller, Dr. Lisa Young, members of the Blumenthal family, and Lynda Brafman.
