ARSON: 6 Bukharian homes are torched in Forest Hills By Jake Pearson, AP Somebody has been burning down new homes in a neighborhood populated by Bukharian Jews, and police aren’t sure whether the victims are being targeted for their religion, their architectural taste, or for no reason at all. Over the past six weeks, an arsonist has torched six buildings in the same tight-knit section of eastern Queens, police say. Four of the ďŹ res hit new homes that were still under construction, including one house — belonging to Rabbi Zalman Zvulonov — that was burned

twice. At one ďŹ re scene, someone left an encrypted note apparently intended to throw off investigators. Police say they don’t have evidence suggesting that the arsons are hate crimes, but the fact that most of the victims have been Bukharian Jews, a group that ed persecution in Central Asia, has the neighborhood on edge. One theory is that the arsonist is targeting opulent, oversized homes that have been replacing the neighborhood’s modest dwellings. Another holds that the person behind the ďŹ res is just disturbed. The event is co-sponsored by the Israeli New York Flight Club, which ew 14 wounded IDF soldiers on a joy ride last Thursday. The group met at the Young Israel of Woodmere, took off from Republic Airport, and ew over Jones Beach, Coney Island, by the Freedom Tower and up the Hudson River corridor. They were greeted and honored at Republic Airport by a group of students from the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County. Sunday’s event is free and open to all. Kerry’s 1 state comments are irksome in Israel JERUSALEM — Secretary of State John Kerry has set off a furor by suggesting that Israel was destroying itself as a Jewish state. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted angrily, telling his cabinet that “Israel will not be a binational state and blaming the Palestinians for the failure of peace efforts. Kerry told a conference on Israeli affairs in Washington on Saturday that through its continued occupation of the West Bank, Israel could make it impossible to partition the

By Maayan Jaffe, JNS.org JERUSALEM — Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is returning to Israel next week, for four shows in Tel Aviv on Dec. 19 and 20. Although he’s visited Israel previously, and even volunteered in Kibbutz Sa’ar when he was 15, he has never performed there before. Seinfeld is coming with his friend of 37 years, fellow comedian Mark Schiff, who will open each show. “Israel is the best, Schiff tells JNS.org, saying of Seinfeld, “Jerry loves Israel, too—that is for sure. In October, Seinfeld performed at the Los Angeles Red Star Ball of American Friends of Magen David Adom, the U.S.-based support arm of Israel’s national ambulance, blood-services, and disaster-relief organization. land between Jewish and Palestinian states. “The one-state solution is no solution at all for a secure, Jewish, democratic Israel living in peace, it is simply not a viable option, Kerry said. The U.S., along with most of the international community, has long argued that a “two-state solution — establishing a Palestinian state and ending Israel’s control over millions of Palestinians in territories occupied in the 1967 war in which Israel foiled the atContinued on page 13
