By Sean Savage, JNS.org Nearly 70 percent of the major attacks against American Jews and Jewish institutions during the last five decades have been carried out by white supremacists and Islamic terrorists, according to an unprecedented new report released this week by the Community Security Service (CSS), a Jewish security organization.

“What is most concerning is that those who intend to harm the Jewish community are becoming increasingly brazen in their attacks,” said Yehudit Barsky, the report’s author.

“We hope that readers understand the nature of the threat, the ideologies and impulses behind the threat, and that this leads to greater emphasis on security within the [Jewish] community,” said CSS Executive Director Jason Friedman.

Health minister urges Israelis: Skip the donuts

JERUSALEM — Israel’s health minister this week called on the public to refrain from eating the traditional Chanukah treat sufganiyot.

“I call on the public to avoid eating sufganiyot, which are rich in fats,” Yaakov Litzman of the Haredi Orthodox United Torah Judaism party said Sunday during a conference to promote healthy eating, Ynet reported.

“You can find alternatives for everything nowadays and there is no need for us to fatten our children with sufaganiyot, which are not in line with the principles of health and proper nutrition.”

Sufganiyot — traditional jelly donuts — are deep fried and covered with powdered sugar, although variations include other fillings and toppings. They are ubiquitous in the weeks leading up to the holiday, with bakeries frying them on the street and selling them fresh to passersby.

“If I had to say this today, I’d say sufganiyot out,” Litzman said. ‘You can eat them, of course, because it is part of the holiday’s customs, but there are alternatives.”

On Monday, he pulled back slighting, stating, “I am not saying it should be prohibited … but one shouldn’t eat a mountain of them.

Eat one on Chanukah and that’s it.”

YeshivaWorldNews said that when it was pointed out to him that eating jelly donuts is a mitzvah, he responded that there are far more important mitzvos to fulfil and that one should not be machmir regarding the donuts.

usan Abeles’ saga began in 2013 when she took time off to observe the last two days of Passover, just as she had done annually for the past 26 years. During those years, Abeles, an Orthodox Jew, worked for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), mainly as a data specialist.

The MWAA is the governmentally-created public body that oversees Reagan National Airport in the District of Columbia and Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

In 2013, the MWAA stunned Abeles by suddenly labeling her annual Passover time off as “AWOL” absenteeism. The charge arose not because Abeles failed to notify her supervisors in advance, which she did multiple times in writing, but because the authority disapproved of how she reminded her supervisor, who was also on leave and could not be reached.

To punish Abeles, the MWAA slapped her with a five-day suspension without pay.

Shaken, Abeles saw the action by her employer as a clear infringement of her religious rights prompted solely because she took time for the last two days of Passover, holy days on which observant Jews abstain from work.

Due to the suspension, Abeles’ felt compelled to take involuntary retirement rather than endure what she has termed continued “harassment on account of her religious faith.” or years, Abeles was told to routinely schedule her religious days off via various ordinary direct means, including use of the official Outlook calendar utilized by her department. In 2013, the MWAA required an advance verbal approval from Abeles’ immediate supervisor.

Even though Abeles, as in prior years, provided her supervisors in advance a complete list of all the days she would be out for religious holidays in 2013, her immediate supervisor was on leave the last work day prior to the end of Passover and was not available to acknowledge the final submitted request.

So Abeles did the next best thing, she sent an email reminder to both her supervisor and her supervisor’s supervisor. The ranking supervisor promptly acknowledged the reminder with a reply email stating “thanks.” Despite these efforts, Abeles was still punished.

In May 2015, after Abeles left the MWAA, she sued the authority and her two supervisors, Valerie O’Hara and Julia Hodge, in Federal Court. Famed Jewish civil rights attorneys Nathan Lewin and daughter Alyza Lewin took up her cause. The Lewins charged violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993. Defending the MWAA and its supervisors is Morris Kletzkin of the Washington D.C. firm Friedlander Misler and other attorneys.

The lower court dismissed the case, asserting Abeles had been properly penalized. The Lewins appealed. On Dec. 8, 2016, the case was argued before the Federal Appeals court in Richmond Virginia, Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III presiding. Several dozen local Yeshiva students, both girls and boys, who had heard about the controversy, jammed the courtroom to hear the legal case for penalizing Abeles for what she had been doing for more than two decades—taking annual Passover leave.

Abeles legal claim involves a 1973 amendment to the Civil Rights Act that requires private employers to make a “reasonable accommodation” for employees’ religious observances, as well as the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act. MWAA has contended that neither the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act provisions or its Virginia

state equivalent apply to it. The authority claims that although its board is appointed by the President of the United States, the governors of Virginia and Maryland, as well as the mayor of the District of Columbia, it is not subject to either the federal or Virginia laws protecting religious freedom against infringements upon religious observance.

The Authority’s defense has revolved around the minutia of workplace process because Abeles had not followed precise verbal procedures in this instance. For its part, the MWAA openly took the position in prior filings that Abeles, despite her 26 years of loyal service, “was a long-term, albeit mediocre, employee.” By utilizing the years-long procedure of email and official Outlook calendar postings in 2013, and not verbally reminding her direct supervisor and getting oral approval, Abeles was guilty of “insubordination,” the defendants argued. The Authority’s brief even denigrated Abeles’ legal arguments as “most bizarre.” he oral arguments in Richmond lasted about an hour. After much debate about arcane job procedures, an exasperated Nathan Lewin finally declared that he too is an Orthodox Jew. He knows what it is like to live “in the real world” where observant Jews merely inform their colleagues when they need to take off for Jewish holidays, and that is respected. After the hearing, Lewin addressed the assembled Yeshiva students in the corridor, reminding them that in the real world Orthodox Jews are not expected to secure signed notices before they take off for holidays.

The American Jewish Committee, the National Jewish Commission on Law and Public Affairs (COLPA) and the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty have all filed amicus briefs on behalf of Abeles. COLPA argued that if the lower court’s adverse ruling “is adopted, a significant number of Sabbath observers might find it impossible to maintain their jobs and remain faithful to the dictates of their conscience.”

Eric Rassbach, deputy general counsel of the Becket Fund, quipped, “It takes some chutzpah for the government to punish a Jewish woman for celebrating Passover. It takes even more chutzpah to say that they are the only government agency in DC exempt from our civil rights laws.”

Immediately after the oral arguments in Richmond, attorney Kletzkin was contacted by phone by this reporter. He refused to answer any questions and did not respond to an email. Bruce Heppen, MWAA associate general counsel, refused to take a call on the case.

Craig Marlow, a staffer in Heppen’s office referred calls to MWAA media relations, which did not reply to a voice mail message. Another media duty officer, Rob Yingling, issued a terse comment stating, “The Airports Authority does not comment on pending litigation.”

Asked how she felt after years of frustration in the case, Abeles stated, “My Jewish faith is an integral part of who I am and that includes observing Passover. I worked at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority for twenty-six years and provided to various supervisors the same advance notice of all Jewish holidays without incident. It is saddening that despite following the same protocol I had each year, I was put on AWOL and suspended for five days which drove me to retire early for simply practicing my faith.”

Nathan Lewin said if needed he might appeal the case to the United States Supreme Court. “This is the ultimate plain denial of religious observance by an employer. Abeles gave plenty of notice and she got ambushed by her employer.” He added, “If this case is not illegal, then no such case will be illegal.”

Menorah war! How ‘largest menorah’ tiff landed two rabbis in a beit din

By Ben Sales, JTA Each year in Brooklyn, Park Slope’s Chabad rabbi, Shimon Hecht, ascends 33 and a half feet to light the tallest menorah in the world.

But he’s not allowed to call it that anymore.

By decree of a Chabad-Lubavitch rabbinical court, Rabbi Hecht must cede the title of “World’s Largest Menorah” to another candelabra, this one also erected by a Chabad rabbi, also in New York.

That menorah is, in fact, six inches shorter than Rabbi Hecht’s, but because it used the “tallest” moniker first, the court said it owns the title.

“Every Chanukah operation is meant for publicizing the miracle in a way that sanctifies G-d’s name and the name of Chabad, and not, G-d forbid, the opposite,” the judges wrote in the Dec. 1 decision. “So when another organization in the same city uses the same descriptor without permission from the plaintiff, it could cause the opposite of respect to Lubavitch.”

Each Chanukah since 1984, Rabbi Hecht’s menorah has stood at Grand Army Plaza, a public plaza at the main entrance to Prospect Park in an upscale Brooklyn neighborhood. Across the river in Manhattan, the other Chabad menorah, erected by Rabbi Shmuel Butman, stands on Fifth Avenue at the southeastern corner of Central Park.

The bases of both menorahs reach 32 feet, the maximum allowed by Jewish law. But Hecht’s central candle, the shamash, pokes half a foot higher into the sky than Butman’s.

“The whole spirit of the holiday is to spread the miracle” of Chanukah, said Rabbi Moshe Hecht, Shimon Hecht’s son. “Putting menorahs out in the public garners attention.”

In the mid-1970s, Chabad’s Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson began encouraging his emissaries to build public menorahs to increase awareness of the holiday and to inspire Jews to light their own menorahs. More than two decades after his death, Chabad rabbis put up large menorahs every year in cities around the world — one of the most visible signs of the global Hasidic Jewish outreach movement.

Each New York menorah has staked its claim to being the world’s largest — and each has used that distinction for all the publicity it’s worth.

The Manhattan menorah, first set up about a decade before its Brooklyn rival, stands between the posh Plaza and Pierre Hotels on Fifth Avenue. Designed by Israel artist Yaacov Agam, the menorah’s candlesticks rise from a rectangular base and shoot off diagonally. A string of New York mayors and governors have ascended in an electrician’s cherry-picker to light the Fifth Avenue menorah — though former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and current Mayor Bill de Blasio have lit candles at both locations.

In 2006, the Fifth Avenue menorah scored a coup — it got Guinness World Records to certify it as “World’s largest menorah.”

“The prominence of the menorah carries an additional message,” Butman, who wouldn’t comment to JTA, said in a 2014 press release. “The Rebbe teaches that soon there will be another light, an eternal light, the eternal light of Moshiach, the eternal light of the Great Redemption.”

But until the rabbinic ruling on Dec. 1, the

Brooklyn menorah hadn’t let go of its claim to the title. Standing opposite a military memorial in the center of Grand Army Plaza, it rises from a single gold-colored stem that widens into an angled candelabra. Last year, Rabbi Hecht drew 2,000 people to the first candle-lighting and expects a similar turnout this year.

To promote the menorah, Rabbi Hecht runs the website www.largestmenorah.com and — until the court decision — advertised it on the Facebook page World’s Largest Menorah. Both the website and Facebook page feature a logo of a menorah rising from a globe.

The dispute, said the rebbe’s biographer Samuel Heilman, exemplifies Chabad’s dilemma since its leader’s death in 1994. Decades ago, Rabbis Hecht and Butman would have appealed directly to the rebbe, whose word was final. But now, a variety of sometimes competing Chabad institutions can operate independently of one another.

“Chabad is now no longer led by a single authority, and today is really in a situation where each emissary or each territory is its own independent operator,” said Heilman, who co-wrote the biography “The Rebbe,” published in 2012.

In this case, the court became the acting authority. In the ruling, the judges ordered Rabbi Hecht to change his promotional materials or surrender them to Butman, and to instead use a descriptor like “The central menorah of Brooklyn.” Rabbi Moshe Hecht said he and his father are still working on a re-branding.

“We’re Jews, so we have to follow the ruling of the beis din,” he told JTA. “It’s going to be the same menorah it’s been for the last 30 years.”

Meanwhile, The Brooklyn Paper reported

that “the Manhattan menorah isn’t Hecht’s only rival — his own nephew, Rabbi Aaron Raskin of Congregation B’nai Avraham of Brooklyn Heights, also runs a giant public menorah lighting.” Rabbi Raskin previously declared his menorah, close to Brooklyn’s seat of government at Borough Hall, to be the borough’s “official” one.

“We’ve got two huge menorahs and they’ve got one,” The Brooklyn Paper quoted former Borough President Mary Markwoitz. “Enough said.”

Bottom line is this: SJP is about hate, only hate Commentary by Rabbi Yaakov Menken When students at Toronto’s Ryerson University Hillel proposed to their Student Union that the university participate in the broader Canadian Holocaust Awareness Week, they did not anticipate the jeers, snickers, and eventual walkout to prevent a quorum from approving the motion. Nor did they anticipate that this hateful behavior would be led by members of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

In this respect, their shock is itself surprising.

Hillel students assumed SJP would respond as Hillel and most groups would respond were a minority group to propose an event promoting awareness of a tragedy that affected that community. Were someone to propose Native American Land Loss Week, or an event commemorating the Armenian or Rwandan genocide, Jewish groups would be (and have been) first to endorse and participate.

But Jewish students and their supporters were wrong to expect SJP supporters to conduct themselves in a civilized fashion. SJP is not about moral, decent behavior.

Ryerson student Tamar Lyons experienced firsthand the real agenda of SJP as well as the Muslim Students’ Association (MSA).

An Emerson fellow with the Israel advocacy group StandWithUs, Lyons found herself feeling threatened while she stood in line at the Student Union meeting, waiting to voice her support for Holocaust Education Week.

“The president of MSA and the vice president of SJP stood in front of me as I went to speak in support of a motion to have Holocaust Education Week,” Lyons explained, in a conversation with the Haym Salomon Center.

“Knowing that I am a proud Jew and Zionist, they both glare at me and very aggressively tell me, ‘You need to sit down because there are too many of you,’ referring to Jews.”

The extent to which SJP will go to conceal its anti-Semitic agenda cannot be overstated. The group’s social media pages, including at Ryerson, claim that SJP “rejects and condemns any form of hatred or discrimination against any religious, racial, or ethnic group.” Please continue reading after you’re done laughing.

SJP is, of course, the driving force behind the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which attempts to compare the

State of Israel to the South African system of apartheid. Anyone who has seen Arabs and Jews working together in businesses across Israel, or watched Arab and Jewish patients treated equally in the nation’s hospitals, knows that this allegation displays bigotry. Indeed, it inverts reality: Israel is the only country in the region to not engage in ethnic cleansing. All of its neighbors now have less than 10 percent of their Jewish populations of a century ago — not so much because Jews wanted to leave, but because they were driven from their homes.

While the true intent of BDS is the destruction of Israel, it purports to “merely” call for Israel to abandon the holy cities and

places forbidden to Jews by the Jordanian Army from 1948 to 1967. BDS founder and SJP hero Omar Barghouti publicly promotes BDS, and freely admits that the movement’s goal is to exterminate the Jewish state.

While BDS has failed, after a decade of activity, in terms of international investment and the isolation of Israel, there is one metric by which BDS is an unqualified success: inciting anti-Semitic hatred.

Students must understand that SJP aligns itself with such paragons of human rights as Iran, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. In testimony before Congress earlier this year, Jonathan Schanzer, a former U.S. Treasury Department official, traced the links between the murderous Hamas terror organization and leaders of American Muslims for Palestine, the off-campus funding source of SJP. The AMP national campus coordinator recently called for Israel’s destruction and for individual Israelis to be murdered.

If Jews, especially millennials, refuse to call these groups out for being the bigots they are, it will only be a matter of time before they achieve world stage victories. And those consequences will be deadly.

“Anti-Semitism has become a socially accepted norm, a permissible form of hatred.

And that is not okay,” Lyons, the Ryerson student, told the Haym Salomon Center. “The fact is that we are too afraid to call it what it is — afraid to say this is anti-Semitism, this is Jew-hatred.”

Rockefeller and NIF fuel campus anti-Semitism

By Yona Schiffmiller, JNS.org The New Israel Fund (NIF) recently received a grant to “research and report on antiSemitism on U.S. campuses.” On the surface, this appears to be a welcome development—a progressive group being mobilized to confront a major social malady plaguing institutions of higher education.

Beneath the surface of the Sept. 27 grant, however, are vested interests seeking to use this issue to cover up their role in fomenting the atmosphere that is hostile to Jewish students. The NIF is being paid by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF), a main backer of the anti-Israel activism that contributes to, enables and devolves into anti-Semitism on college campuses.

RBF provides hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations that delegitimize the Jew-

ish state and promote the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, both on and off campus, including Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), Palestine Legal and the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).

Several RBF grantees promote agendas that deny Israel’s legitimacy and advocate “onestate” formulas designed to eradicate the Jewish state. Zochrot, for example, envisions a “de-Zionized Palestine,” while Adalah systematically works in the U.S. and Europe to label Israel as a fundamentally “racist” state. Grassroots Jerusalem, Who Profits and the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (formally the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation) are all leaders in BDS campaigns in the U.S. and internationally.

As several in-depth reports and publications have shown, the marked increase in virulently

anti-Israel activity on campuses throughout the U.S. has coincided with higher rates of antiSemitism at these same institutions. Considering RBF’s culpability in funding and enabling organizations that create this intimidating environment for Jewish students, it is curious that RBF would commission a publication that studies the rise of anti-Semitism at American colleges. Any serious publication would, ultimately, implicate RBF itself and cite its funding for antiIsrael campus groups and related organizations.

But the routine denials on the part of its grantees that anti-Israel activity can lead to or amount to anti-Semitism provide a clue as to RBF’s motivations and to its desired conclusions for the study. Both JVP and Palestine Legal have attacked and rejected the U.S. State Department definition of anti-Semitism, which recog-

nizes demonization of, application of double standards to, and delegitimization of Israel as anti-Semitic. JVP strongly opposed and campaigned against the March 2016 University of California Board of Regents statement that affirmed, “Anti-Semitism, anti-Semitic forms of anti-Zionism and other forms of discrimination have no place at the University of California.”

The report reveals that Jewish houses of worship were the most-targeted location, accounting for roughly 51 percent of attacks, followed by Jewish communal institutions (14 percent), individual Jews (13 percent), and Jewish educational institutions (10 percent).

Among these attacks, the re-port finds equal frequencies for arson, shootings and the use of explosive devices.

Further, the report extrapolates several lessons and recommendations that could inform

general law enforcement. For instance, it notes that going after Jewish targets often serves as a precursor to larger attacks — including for the perpetrators of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, who were first involved in anti-Jewish incidents, and the 2009 Arkansas military recruiting center shooting, whose perpetrator first carried out attacks on Jewish targets.

According to the report’s analysis, attacks against the Jewish community “have increased in their intended severity and have, or would have, claimed many more victims than in previous dec-ades.”

“Now, in the second decade of the twentyfirst century, we find ourselves in an era where those who promote anti-Jewish rhetoric and instigation have the technical tools to reach a

broader audience in less time than ever before.

In fact, as recently as March 2016, the Islamic State in Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) publicly encouraged its followers to attack Jews and their allies, ‘wher-ever they find them’,” the report states.

For American Jews, the CSS report comes at a time marked by various challenges such as surg-ing anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rhetoric and attacks on U.S. college campuses, the rise of the alt-right movement, and the threat of Islamic terrorism. Friedman said he hopes the report will pro-vide “some critical perspective” for the Jewish community.

“The Jewish community does not exist in a vacuum and is subject to the social, political and economic forces that affect all Americans.

In many cases, these forces can affect the Jew-

ish community more intensely,” he said. “We are certainly feeling this effect right now.”

“We saw this type of research had never been done before, and we wanted to better understand the patterns of attacks over the last five decades to inform our own — as well as our law en-forcement partners and other security partners’ — operations and training,” Friedman said.

“Every Jewish community has the responsibility to be aware and take proactive steps to prevent attacks,” he said. “Having trained volunteers from within the community ensures that no matter how law enforcement resources and security guard budgets are allocated, the community has a sustainable and effective means of security.”

I

t was a small mutzav (fortified position) on the Qasmiyeh Bridge, deep in the IDF security zone in Lebanon and far from the border and Hezbollah, until the IDF, as part of a gradual withdrawal, pulled back below the Awali River.

Overnight, this unit of Hesdernikim (boys who combine their army service with yeshiva study, committing to five years of service rather than the normal three years) found themselves on the front lines and things started heating up.

Firefights, midnight ambushes, and roadside bombs became the norm; and morning roll calls and pre-mission briefings took on a whole new meaning. On March 19, 1985, Hezbollah terrorists opened up on one of the patrols as they crossed the Qasmiyeh Bridge and Dani Moshitz and David Cohen, ob”m, were both killed.

Just a few days earlier, as part of their efforts to stay one step ahead of an enemy which clearly had a “home court” advantage, they tried to change up their patrol routes and to avoid any planned ambushes. Their new route took them through a melon field. Dani was determined to make sure the soldiers took care not to step on the melons. “When all this is over,” he said, “some poor Arab farmer will have to harvest his melons. He is not our enemy, and there is no justification for destroying his crops.”

Flash forward almost five years. It’s 1990, and I am on a reserve duty patrol attempting to catch Palestinians who are heaving heavy

rocks, bottles and even metal bars onto an IDF lookout in Hebron. On the radio, a spotter alerts me to a masked terrorist and coming around a corner. I see him quite clearly, holding a Palestinian flag in one hand and swinging a mace (spiked iron ball on a chain, a vicious and life threatening weapon) around in the air. Upon hearing me shout “wakif” (“stop”), he turns, sees me aiming my rifle, throws down his weapon, and takes off like an Olympic runner. The simplest solution would be to shoot him, but as my life was no longer in imminent danger and he had thrown down his weapon, that was obviously against regulations.

Just last year I heard from a soldier who had participated in Operation Tzuk Eitan (Strong Cliff) in the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2014. He said that in civilian areas (which is pretty much everywhere Hamas fights) it is now illegal for IDF forces to spray machine gun fire unless they can actually see the enemy they are firing at, despite feeling endangered and even if trying to hold Hamas forces at bay. (Note that this regulation is unique to the IDF; no other army in the world has this regulation.) ow far does ethics in warfare take us?

And where did this concept start? This week’s portion, Vayishlach, contains a fascinating detail, hidden in the larger-thanlife story of Yaakov’s encounter with Esau.

Yaakov is finally returning home to Israel

and he is about to meet up with Esau, the brother who swore to kill him 22 years earlier after Yaakov tricked him out of the blessings.

The messengers Yaakov sends to greet Esau (and gauge his mood?) report back that Esau is coming their way with 400 fighting men, an enormous army in those days. (Avraham conquered an entire empire, in the battle of the Kings, with only 300 men.)

And the Torah tells us: “Va’Yira Yaakov me’od, vayetzer lo” (“Yaakov was very afraid and he was distressed”). (Bereishit 32:8) The Torah does not waste words, so the obvious question is: What is the difference between fear and distress? What does it mean that not only was Yaakov afraid, he was also distressed?

Rashi (quoting the Midrash Tanhuma) suggests that he was afraid he might be killed, and he was distressed lest he be forced to kill others. One might think this was the Yaakov who was the “dweller of tents,” passive and afraid of violence. But as the story unfolds it becomes clear, with Yaakov doing battle into the night, that he is not averse to violence if it’s necessary.

The Siftei Chachamim (Rav Shabsai Bass, Amsterdam 1680) posits that Yaakov was afraid that he or his men might accidentally kill innocent bystanders or Esau’s men who might not need to be killed. Referencing the Talmud (Tractate Sanhedrin 74a; and see Shulkhan Arukh, Hoshen Mishpat, 421:13), he points out that

even when saving the life of someone being pursued by a rodef (someone intent on taking revenge for his accidentally killed relative), if one can stop the pursuer by simply maiming him, one is actually not allowed to kill him and would be liable to capital punishment in the event! ince Yaakov was afraid that Esau was coming to kill him, Judaism is quite clear (Sanhedrin 72a): “When someone is coming to kill you, you can kill him first.” And yet Yaakov is still trying to avoid unnecessary force.

It follows that the dilemma here is not strategic, nor is it merely fear and anxiety. Rather, Yaakov is struggling with an ethical dilemma.

Even if halachically one might be “covered” in killing the enemy (or even the enemy civilian), Yaakov is looking for the moral high ground.

There are two principals at play here.

1) Self-defense — meaning one has a responsibility to protect oneself (and in this case, one’s loved ones), which might mean killing someone (Esau, and perhaps some or all of his men).

2) “Thou shalt not murder on the other,” expressing the inviolate sanctity of human life and the imperative not to take another human being’s life.

But to uphold the second principle and refuse to kill would mean violating the first principle of the sanctity of one’s own life. And while Judaism and the Torah will tell us what choice to make in such circumstances, perhaps Yaakov is teaching us that we should struggle with the resulting decision.

Jewish Media Summit

He discussed what he calls TTP — “terror, technology and peace,”a play on Presidentelect Donald Trump’s campaign talk about the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement.

Netanyahu spoke about his country’s place in the global high-tech arena and other issues during a press conference for international Jewish journalists last week at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The journalists were gathered in Jerusalem for the four-day Jewish Media Summit, organized by Israel’s Government Press Office.

The prime minister addressed a variety of topics of concern to the American and global Jewish communities.

•He called the rise in anti-Semitism in America “a fringe phenomenon” that should be fought.

•On the issue of the Kotel agreement that allows egalitarian prayer at the holy site, he said, “There was backtracking, which happens … it’s a process.”

•Netanyahu said a Palestinian Authority push for the United Kingdom to denounce the 1917 Balfour Declaration was “very revealing about the true source of this enduring conflict.

It’s not about territories, even though that’s an issue. It’s not about settlements, even though that’s an issue. It’s not even about a Palestinian state. … It’s always been about the Jewish state, and the fact there’s a challenge to the Balfour Declaration 100 years later tells you that we haven’t come very far.”

When meeting with foreign leaders, Netanyahu said that if they don’t bring up the Palestinian question, he does, explaining that “most of them don’t raise it, they don’t care.”

Offers by other world leaders to host direct talks between Netanyahu and PA President Mahmoud Abbas on neutral territory fall apart, he said, after world leaders go to Ramallah and ask Abbas to meet without preconditions.

“We’re willing to negotiate peace immediately without preconditions, and the other side is not,” said Netanyahu. “They have strange politics there.”

Yet while the Israeli-Palestinian peace process has stagnated, Israel is quickly building other key alliances in the Arab world.

“The biggest change is right here in the Middle East, where many countries in the region understand that Israel is their partner—not their enemy, but their ally in fighting militant Islam, either by the Shi’ites led by Iran or the Sunnis lead by Daesh (Islamic State). Israel is their ally in this indispensable battle for the future. This will ultimately prove the path to peace,” Netanyahu said.

At the end of the session, the prime minister pointed to charts projected on the wall as part of his presentation, including a Gallup poll showing the breakdown of favorable attitudes toward Israel in America, 71 percent, and in PA-controlled territory, 18 percent, as well as graphs showing Israeli innovation in dairy farming production and wastewater reclamation.

“Which cow produces the most milk per cow? It’s an Israeli cow—every moo is computerized,” he said.

“If you’re a country in Africa or in Asia or in Latin America, and you want to increase your dairy production or water usage or solar energy or your public health or your IT sector or your cyber security, Israel is the place,” Netanyahu said. “People understand Israel is a great force for good.”

With the rise of radical Islamic terror worldwide, countries are looking to cooperate with Israel for its “vast intelligence capacity and beyond that as well” to better protect their citizens, said Netanyahu.

But it’s the country’s booming technology sector—specifically cybersecurity—that is the real difference-maker, he asserted.

“Israel is at the nexus of the great change taking place in any technology,” Netanyahu said.

Though Israel has 8 million residents—just one-tenth of 1 percent of the world’s population—it attracted more than 20 percent of global private investment in cybersecurity this year. “We’re punching 200 times above our weight,” said the prime minister.

Other areas of major growth include Israel’s accelerating driverless car technology—which has attracted automotive giants BMW, General Motors and Ford Motor Co., among others—and digital healthcare, the use of technology to improve medical care for patients.

“This is an explosion,” Netanyahu said.

“And all these countries understand not only to protect themselves against terrorism, but to seize the future. Everything is becoming technologized, and Israel is a global force of technology.”

By Ruth Ellen Gruber, JTA When you share a name with someone you respect and admire, you always try to live up to the connection, because sometimes outsiders aren’t aware of the difference.

That’s how it was for decades with me and Ruth Gruber, the noted photojournalist, reporter and author who died last week at age 105 after a remarkable life and career.

From my first international byline, when I was a young intern at the Associated Press in Rome in the 1970s (when Ruth was already in her 60s), right up to a Facebook comment just a couple months ago, our names, and also our shared focus on Jewish affairs, have led to confusion.

It didn’t matter that she was decades older than I was, or that she had written largely about Israel and Holocaust matters and I mainly write about European Jewish affairs and Jewish heritage. Our biographies have often been conflated, and articles even ran with the picture of the wrong person.

Ruth received checks in the mail that were actually due to me, and a major Jewish organization once sent me an official letter announcing an award — except as I read through the letter I realized that the award was meant for her, not me.

I tried to underscore my individuality by using my middle initial or middle name — Ellen — in my byline and in other professional dealings. But it hasn’t always helped.

In January 1983, when, as a UPI correspondent, I was arrested on trumped-up accusations of espionage, jailed overnight and expelled from communist Poland, Ruth’s answering machine ran out of space because of calls from anxious friends and family.

when I returned to the U.S. briefly after my expulsion from Poland, or if our first meeting came nearly a decade later, in 1992, when, wearing a striking broad-brimmed hat, she attended the launch of my first book, “Jewish Heritage Travel: A Guide to Central and Eastern Europe.”

But we stayed in touch over the years, and every time we got together or spoke on the phone we laughed about our common — if sometimes frustrating — problem of confused identity.

Over the decades, I have received scores of

emails meant for Ruth, especially before she herself had an email account.

A particular flood of them came after a two-part CBS mini-series based on Ruth’s book, “Haven: The Dramatic Story of 1,000 World War II Refugees and How They Came to America,” aired in February 2001.

Scores of viewers who were moved by the story of how Ruth in 1944 escorted 982 refugees from 19 Nazi-occupied countries to safe haven in Oswego, New York, poured out their hearts in sometimes very emotional terms.

Even five years later, a non-Jewish viewer in Colorado wrote to Ruth at my email address: “Shalom!!” he began. “There are no words to express how your story has impacted our lives! […] Do you have any suggestions as to how we might embrace and love the Jewish population where we live? With all the hatred that has been afflicted on your beautiful people and culture there are so many obstacles to overcome. Any advice you could give would be priceless!”

Perhaps the funniest example of our identity mix-up took place in person, not in cyberspace.

At an American Jewish Committee annual meeting in the late 1990s, I gave my name when I asked a question during one of the sessions. As I went back to my seat, a woman stopped me.

“It’s so good to see you again!” she exclaimed. “You came to our house in the ‘40s!”

I stared at her for a few seconds before I could gather myself to respond.

“Look at me,” I finally told her. “I know I’m tired, but do you really think I could have come to your house in the ‘40s?”

Farewell, Ruth! I hope I can continue to honor your example.

‘TNT’ for SKA 9th graders in W’dmere The freshmen of the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls mingled and bonded at the TNT — Thursday Night Tish — at the Woodmere home of ninth grader Tali Kimmel.

Hot potato kugel and an abundance of snacks were on the menu, along with Chanu-

kah-themed games and an epic candy menorah-making contest.

This inspiring evening was highlighted by the participation of Associate Principal Elana Flaumenhaft, who is directly responsible for the academic, emotional, social and religious

development of the ninth graders. Grade level advisers Sheila Leibtag, Dani Sudwerts and Esti Engel, and the grade madrichot also helped make this tish exciting. SKA thanks Dr. Neera Kimmel and family for their gracious hospitality.

Chagigat HaChumash for CAHAL class at HAFTR For Rabbi Waxman’s HAFTR CAHAL class, it was the day of kabalat haTorah, the day they got to receive and hold their chumashim.

For weeks, they have been learning the songs and motions for their Chagigat Ha’chumash. The CAHAL boys blended into HAFTR’s mainstream second grade in every step of the process, from making their own wooden picture frames, to creating a chumash book cover and performing in the final production. Preparing the songs and performance was lots of fun, but being able to find and recognize the pesukim that they have been learning in their new chumashim was fantastic.

The mainstream teachers, administration and specialty staff at HAFTR included the boys as one with their classes, enabling them to truly feel part of the whole wonderful celebration. Just as at matan torah everyone was as “one,” so too, when the boys learn chumash this year, they know they are part of the yeshiva, neighborhood and klal yisroel.

Rosh Chodesh Kislev rocks at HANC

By Adena Cohen, Sophomore Students at HANC HS enjoyed an elaborate breakfast following davening on Rosh Chodesh Kislev, Dec. 1.

The breakfast was followed by a school-wide game show.

During breakfast, senior Leora Schwadron delivered an inspiring d’var Torah which reflected on the theme of chodesh Kislev.

In the game show, each grade volunteered one student to hum the

tunes of different songs. Four classmates were called upon to guess the title of the song hummed. There even was a faculty round! At the end, the seniors came out victorious and were rewarded with donuts.

The achdut and school spirit were palpable throughout the event and is sure to linger into Chanukah.

CAHAL kids bring a parsha to life Parshas Chayai Sara is all about chesed. When second and third grade students in the CAHAL class at Bais Yaakov Ateres Miriam learned about the kindness that Rivka performed for Eliezer, they were inspired to practice some kindness them-

selves. Who better to collaborate with on their chesed initiative than Achiezer? The girls decided to make a further connection to the parsha by initiating their own chesed project.

The girls had learned that three miracles constantly took place in Sarah’s tent, but they ceased when she was nifteres. When Rivka imeinu entered Sarah’s tent, these miracles returned. One of the three miracles was that the challah on her table was always fresh, and this represented Hashem’s bracha in their home. Thus, for their chesed project, the girls decided to bake challah to share with others (photo).

The girls rolled up their sleeves and started baking. Before the teacher made the bracha on hafrashas challah, she explained that there are two different ways to do chesed, a physical way and a spiritual way. In addition to just physically giving our challah rolls to sick patients, we can daven for the patients to have a complete and speedy recovery.

Following heartfelt tefilos, the girls meticulously formed beautiful challah rolls for sick patients to enjoy in the hospital over Shabbos.

CAHAL is grateful to Achiezer for enabling their students to partake in these special chesed opportunities and to actualize the lessons they learn in class.

Midreshet Shalhevet STEM Maayan Sandowski of Woodmere, Sarah Austin of Long Beach, and the rest of the Midreshet Shalhevet Scholars Program students who participate in the STEM Enrichment Class have been learning about the parts of an eye for the last few weeks, and culminated this unit with the dissection of a sheep’s eye. They learned about the different parts of the eye and each one’s purpose. After much anticipation, they had the opportunity to apply knowledge and have some fun in the process.

YACHAD visits the HANC Middle School The Silverstein Hebrew Academy in Great Neck recently expanded its collection of class pets, welcoming a water frog into Morah Reena’s classroom and a bunny into Morah Tzivi’s classroom. Students will have the opportunity to research how to care for their new pets and learn about the different stages of their lifecycle by observation and interactive lessons. The pets will provide students with valuable life lessons, including the responsibility of caring for a pet.

The HANC Middle School welcomed members from YACHAD for a pre-Chanukah program on Sunday. The event began with an ice breaker in which the volunteers said their names and a characteristic, such as “My name is … and I live in West Hempstead.” Next, the group moved around between four different stations with such Chanukah-related activities as forming sand art in the shape of a menorah, painting and building menorahs. There was also music and dreidel games. The YACHAD members were given two prizes on their way out as a thank you for coming.

‘Blue Ribbon’ Rambam: Ethics in Orlando

This year’s gathering of Blue Ribbon schools from across the country heard something they never heard before. Among the 400 representatives from across the nation there was a yeshiva high school chosen by the Department of Education to be awarded the coveted Blue Ribbon status: Rambam Mesivta.

Every year, out of 37,000 high schools in the United States, .14% — about 1 and a half out of every 1,000 schools — qualify to be named as Blue Ribbon schools.

The application process is lengthy and the standards are rigorous. Ultimately, to qualify, Blue Ribbons schools must have average SAT scores which rank in the top tier nationally.

Rambam Mesivta, of Lawrence, was the only yeshiva in the country to thus qualify.

Blue Ribbon schools were then asked to

submit a topic to discuss and review at an educators conference. Rambam’s topic, “Teaching Values in a Challenging World,” was chosen by the Blue Ribbon school committee and Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman, Rambam’s rosh mesivta, made the presentation this past Wednesday.

“I thought it would be important to share some of the insights that Chazal taught us and demonstrate to those assembled the universal value of those lessons,” said Rabbi Friedman.

Among other references to Biblical and classical Jewish sources, Rabbi Friedman repeatedly cited Pirkei Avos in terms of the proper attitude and shared that it is the prerequisite for a successful education.

“Two thousand years ago, Hillel the sage instructed teachers to encourage students to

ask questions and not be bashful and concomitantly told them not to be short-tempered or frustrated, lest it discourage [their students] from learning and asking,” said Rabbi Friedman.

Other topics covered dealt with the importance of introspection and recognizing one’s own shortcomings and developing effective strategies to correct them.

“While we understand the ongoing nature of teshuva and the growth it affords us, many others in attendance viewed this as a ‘novel’ idea, which they appreciated hearing about,” said Rabbi Friedman.

After the lecture concluded, the room was filled with applause and admiration for the “ancient” values of Torah which remain relevant in every generation.

DRS honors seniors for exemplary acts of chessed This past Sunday, DRS held its seventh annual Nidivei Lev Service Society Induction Ceremony, recognizing DRS students who have shown exemplary service to their community and school through extraordinary acts of chessed and kindness.

The ceremony, attended by the entire student body, as well as faculty and parent, honored members of the senior class who have served their school and larger community with great distinction. The students were presented their awards by the directors and founders of many of the organizations that were the beneficiaries of their chessed.

The following students were recognized for their contributions: Dovi Schlossberg was honored for his work setting up and stocking the Far Rockaway Food Bank which allows those less fortunate to have food and snacks to eat on a daily basis.

Justin Weiss and Hudi Aronovitz were applauded for their steadfast commitment to Chabad’s Friendship Circle program.

Chaverim of the Five Towns acknowledged the hard work that Avi Bulka offers to their program.

Mayer Edelman and Chaim Alper were mentioned for their work in publishing DRS’s weekly Torah publication, the D’Varim HaYozim Min HaLev. Yaakov Schreier was commended for serving as a big brother, offering much needed guidance to a child in the community.

Yachad awarded Sammy Bernstein for his many years of commitment on behalf of their organization.

Lev Leytzan, a medical clowning program, lauded the dedication of Akiva Fink.

KULANU presented an award to Jonathan Crane for his volunteer work.

Bnei Akiva celebrated the accomplishments of Daniel Rosenthal and Jeremy Weiss.

Ohel Beis Ezra was honored to give an award to Akiva Thalheim for his commitment.

Yehuda Shetrit’s work at the South Nassau Hospital was recognized.

Andy Ebbin’s devotion to the Kingsway Jewish Center was commended.

berger led a discussion after davening, discussing priorities in our daily lives.

After lunch there was a “riff off” Jewish song/zemirot game led by Rabbi Kupchik, menahel. More divrei Torah were said and there was another interactive “get to know you” game. After dessert, the girls went to Mrs. Nechama Landau’s house for Mincha and shalosh seudot and heard a talk by Rabbi Shalom Yona Weiss.

Shoah voices spoken at Staten Island college MDSers, at secular Wagner, hear ‘We Will Carry the Word’ Eighth grade students at Manhattan Day School traveled to Staten Island last week to view an original Holocaust play, “We Will Carry the Word,” performed by 20 students of Wagner College.

The performance at the secular institution, in which most of the actors were not Jewish, featured monologues of local Holocaust survivors delivered in the multifaceted style developed by Anna Deveare Smith.

“At a moment of escalating distrust and hate crimes in our nation, it is urgent to promote empathy between students of all faiths and a shared commitment to not be bystanders,” says Lori R. Weintrob, director of the Holocaust Education Center at Wagner College. “We’re thrilled to see that our work is drawing the attention of students and organizations outside Staten Island.”

Attending the performance marked the beginning of a unique partnership between MDS, a Modern Orthodox elementary school on the Upper West Side, and Wagner College.

The two schools have decided to pool their resources in the area of Holocaust study in order to expand their collections of survivor interviews, increase the visibility of their Holocaust study programs, and provide students with a more global view of this period of history. It is a step by both institutions to make their commitment to Holocaust study even stronger.

“It was so important for our students to hear the stories and learn about the Holocaust from another perspective,” says Judy Melzer, associate principal and director of the Holocaust curriculum at MDS. The Wagner faculty and students were equally excited to have the eighth graders attend the show.

The presentation was the culmination of a semester of research and study of the Holocaust using survivor eyewitness testimony.

In a rehearsal process guided by Theresa McCarthy, professor of theater at Wagner College, students came to embody and give voice to an individual holocaust survivor from testimony drawn primarily from the archives of the Shoah Foundation.

McCarthy explored with students techniques for creating character that are the opposite of traditional method acting, with its emphasis on psychological analysis of charac-

ter’s desires. The performers were inspired by the work of modernist theatre artist Anna Deveare Smith, whose documentary performance works have revolutionized the actor’s approach to character.

“Because these survivors are real people, I want to honor their true expressive testimony,” says McCarthy. “Students have studied their subjects’ video interviews and observed the nuance and details that can be heard in their voice, the accent and the inflection, the tempo of their speech in every gesture. Through this deep study and practice, students created a live documentary performance of their survivor.”

The course was inspired by a joint project of the National Jewish Theater Foundation and the Shoah Foundation entitled “This is What I’ve Scene.” In addition, there are scenes from Tony Kushner’s “Bright Room Called Day” and Charlotte Delbo’s “Who Will Carry the Word.”

“I thought it was a powerful way to convey the message of the Holocaust, not to be a bystander, and to learn from history,” says Rachel Halpern, MDS student. “Not just to tell the story and tell the facts but to really show it with the accents, with the acting.”

The Wagner College undergraduates are bringing to life the experiences of Holocaust survivors who live on or have had a connection to Staten Island: Harry Bloxenheim, Margot Capell, Gabi Held, Betty and Emil Jacoby, Luba Dora Malz, Rachel Gottlieb, Brenda Perelman, Rachel Roth, Suzanne Sauers, Irene Rosenberg, Edith Golden, Romi Cohn, Hannah Steiner — some from Germany, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Slovakia.

Most survived Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen or other Nazi camps, while a few survived in hiding. Several survivors were in attendance at the performance.

Among the performers, the Wagner firstsemester students come from other countries including Ireland, India, Sweden and Austria, and many U.S. states, including Hawaii. Only three students are Jewish.

“It’s about the power of hate … how it can grow into something uncontrollable and unimaginable if you don’t control it and stop it,” says Wagner student Ruth Kupperberg. “It’s all about learning to stand up and speak out because we don’t want to have more occurrences or more situations like this in the future,” The mission of the Wagner College Holocaust Education Center is to awaken future generations to the ramifications of anti-Semitism, prejudice and racism as well as the dynamism of Jewish culture and heritage.

The Rabbinical Council of America published a resolution on Monday that reiterated “its care and concern for converts to the Jewish faith.”

The resolution, passed by direct vote of the RCA membership, notes that “the Torah explicitly and repeatedly expresses great sensitivity and concern for the welfare and wellbeing of converts who may lack the social networks other community members often enjoy, and who may face great challenges integrating into Jewish communities.”

This week’s statement follows a resolution “supporting and defending converts” that emerged from RCA’s 2010 convention.

Here is the text of the RCA resolution: Whereas as the Torah commands us to “love the convert” (e.g., Leviticus 19:34, Deuteronomy 10:19); and, Whereas the Torah warns against the mistreatment of a convert thirty six times, and according to some, forty six times (Bava Metzia 59b); and, Whereas the Talmud (ibid.) rules that one who hurts the feelings of a convert, or oppresses him or her, violates additional prohibitions; and, Whereas the Talmud (ibid.) recognizes the vulnerable and precarious situation of the convert, who has left behind his or her family and community and joined the Jewish people; and, Whereas the Talmud (Bava Metzia 58b) explains that the prohibition against hurting a convert’s feelings regulates the words we use when speaking to him or her (e.g. we may not say, “remember what you did before you converted” or “remember the actions of your parents”); and, Whereas the Talmud (Yevamot 47b) expresses its admiration for the sincere motivations and the plight of a convert Therefore, the Rabbinical Council of America reiterates its concern for the dignity of converts, regardless of their ethnic or national

I run not to burn calories but to be better mom

By Jenny Solomon, Kveller via JTA I was the middle school kid cut from every single athletic team. No sparkly uniforms or “spirit days” for me. But, thanks to my parents’ perseverance, I became a gym devotee in high school.

Fast forward 20 years. After giving birth to two healthy children, I had three secondtrimester miscarriages. During those dark days of overwhelming grief, I felt called to some kind of embodied practice, but I couldn’t bear to walk through the doors of a gym with my still pregnant-looking body.

Instead, I headed outdoors. At first, I walked and cried. But, as my body grew stronger and my soul felt lighter, I began running.

It wasn’t long before I found myself running a

Nearly 10 years (and one more miracle baby) later, I officially call myself a runner. I

log 25 miles a week, with numerous half-marathons under my belt. But my love for running has little to do with burning calories. Here are eight reasons why I run: 1. Running has taught me that whatever discomfort I am feeling is temporary. When my 4-year-old is throwing a tantrum, I am less likely to be reactive. I am reminded that this tantrum shall pass. And to never to make a big decision running up a hill.

2. Running makes me feel alive. When I run, I feel awakened to my body, my feelings, and my life. I remember those things when I listen to my teenager crying after a hard day in middle school, or when I find myself in an argument with my beloved husband. Whether I feel sad, angry, overjoyed, exhausted, energized, or unsure, I am faithful that I can be with all my feelings because I practice that with every run.

3. Running has helped me learn to inhabit my body with love, compassion, and pride. Every run leaves me feeling empowered and grateful for the workings of my body. Even on days when I slog through a run or take frequent walking breaks, I say a little blessing of gratitude that my legs and lungs carried me home. During my runs, I practice coaching myself with positive body talk. I use that same

gentle voice of reassurance and positivity with my family.

4. Running has given me personal space.

Running gives me permission to carve out regular time to be with myself. Sometimes I listen to podcasts of personal or professional interest. Other times, I listen to my favorite music, simulating a dance party in my mind and belting the lyrics with abandon. Other times, I meditate, riding my breath with a mantra.

Lacing up to spend an hour with myself gives me the presence of mind to be there for others.

5. Running gets me outdoors and re-connected to the natural world. I find it exhilarating to run in the rain, and I am not deterred by sub-freezing temperatures (with the proper gear, of course). In our overly “connected” world of smart phones, e-mail and social media, I am grateful for a chunk of time to get back in touch with the earth in all its beauty and wonder.

6. Running provides me with a physical and spiritual discipline to “lean in” when times get tough. Whether I am facing an injury, a professional challenge, or a parenting fail, I always finish my run feeling that I will not only survive this difficulty, but I will find meaning in it.

7. Running is among my most prayerful experiences. Often, I am simply flooded with a sense of G-d’s abiding presence.

8. Even though I typically run alone, I love that running helps me feel that I am never truly alone in this world. I love greeting other runners with a thumbs-up or smiling at walkers, knowing that we are all in this together. I feel a sense of camaraderie with people who would otherwise be simply strangers.

I carry this spirit of community into my Jewish work and the values I aim to teach my children.

Judy Joszef who’s in the kitchen

M

y husband Jerry is into ordering things online. Most things, he doesn’t know he needs, until he actually sees them.

Over the last few years, he started collecting miniature figurines. First there were the philosophers, then characters from Shakespeare, movies, books, fairy tales, etc. Although he’s a tax attorney and partner in the firm, you wouldn’t know it by walking into his office (that is, if you can actually walk into his office). No. It’s not small, it’s actually very spacious, but every inch is basically covered.

Among the scenes created by figurines is George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Jerry is antitotalitarian, so he loved that book. Another scene is an ant hill, with inch long plastic ants circling the hill, which reflects the industrial revolution of the service industry.

There are figurines of the Wizard of Oz, a favorite childhood movie of his. He fancies himself as the scarecrow, which I found odd, because he is one of the most intelligent people I know. He is scatterbrained, though, so maybe he identifies with the scarecrow losing his stuffing all the time.

Pinocchio has a place in the office as well.

Jerry views himself as the little boy who didn’t want to grow up. It’s his inner child.

What I found out recently was that he views his partner Rick and me as Jiminy Cricket — Rick in the office and me everywhere else — attempting to develop Jerry’s adult conscience (thus far with dismal results). Now I’m wondering if I might be the Witch in the

Wizard of Oz. I’m not happy every time one of Jerry’s new mail orders arrive.

Aside from the character scenes in his office, there have been countless deliveries over the years of items I found ridiculous. Dozens of harmonicas, to give out to kids who are visiting their parents in the office. Let me tell you, kids beg to get into Jerry’s office. A few have actually asked for play dates with him.

There were shipments of wooden duck call whistles. Seriously! I didn’t ask what that was for — I wanted to reduce the risk of my killing him.

There were the large T-Rex replicas that are activated by noise or motion and snap their mouths open and shut, ridiculous colored shirts that were too good of a deal to pass on (they were a great deal, because no one wanted them!). There were screeching flying monkeys, clowns, and more than I care to remember.

But last week, there was the delivery that takes the cake.

I was with my daughter, Jordana, and I asked her to look something up on my Amazon account, so she logged in for me and said, “There must be a mistake, looks like someone ordered tumbleweed. Not just one but two orders.” First thing that came to mind was that someone had hacked our account, but then I remembered that Jerry received a letter from Amazon asking if he had applied for another card and when he said no, they told him it might be fraudulent. That would explain this order of tumbleweed. And then I got this sickening feeling, that maybe it was Jerry. (Can you imagine that I was hoping someone had hacked into out account, just so that I would not have to have a husband who ordered tumbleweed!)

Later that night, when he came home, I

relayed the story and held my breath, hoping against hope that he didn’t order it. But alas, that wasn’t to be. My husband placed two orders for tumbleweed. Why? Why not! It was an amazing deal. It was the extra large one that normally sells for six times the price.

This was a steal. And I didn’t have to worry.

It was for his office.

I’ll spare you the rest of that conversation.

Then, two days later, he gets a notice that the seller actually had a problem with the tumbleweed and had to cancel the order. It was as if the Giants had lost JPP for the season.

So be on the lookout for good quality tumbleweed, it’ll make a good cushion for him to sleep on in the garage … if those orders don’t cease!

Bet you would never have thought, that I would have a recipe for anything tumbleweed. Well just so happens I have a great one!

Jr’s Texas Tumbleweed Courtesy of Paula Dean, 2008 Ingredients:

1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 cup beer Peanut oil for frying I large Vidallia onion Ice water House Seasoning: 1 cup salt 1/4 cup black pepper 1/4 cup garlic powder Mix the seasoning. This can be kept in an airtight container for months When adding seasoning, add to taste. Do not use all of it!

Directions: In a bowl mix flour, baking soda, beer and some House Seasoning. Let rest for 15 minutes.

Preheat oil in deep fryer to 350F Slice 3/4-inch to 1-inch off the top of the onion. Peel off the skin. Cut a base out of the bottom, but leave the root intact. Slice the onion in half then into quarters, then into eighths.

Continue until you have cut the onion 16 times. Slicing the onion in this way creates “petals”. Do not cut all the way down to the bottom. This will keep the “flower” together.

Spread the “petals” of the onion apart.

Soak the onion in ice water to help separate the Petals.

Dip the onion in the beer batter. Separate the petals and get the batter between them.

Fry the onion right side up in the oil for 10 minutes, or until lit turns golden brown.

Remove the onion with a large spider ( Asian name for a wire mesh basket with a long handle) from the fryer and let drain on a sheet tray lined with paper towels.

By Josefin Dolsten, JTA SECAUCUS, NJ— At Kosherfest, the world’s largest kosher trade show, Yiddish and Hebrew is heard alongside English. Some 6,000 kosher-food insiders packed the massive hall, chatting, networking and tasting samples.

The crowd skews male and Orthodox — in fact, it may be one of the only events where the men’s bathroom has a longer line than the women’s one.

More than 325 exhibitors are vendors worked the annual two-day expo, held recently at the Meadowlands Exposition Center here. They touted everything from the kosher staples — beef salami, latkes and Israeli wines — to new and unexpected foods, such as a line of Korean products.

Here are some unique kosher products that will be hitting stores soon.

Passover s’mores and pizza kits Manischewitz is launching a line of matzahthemed treats, including two do-it-yourself food “kits”: matzah s’mores and matzah pizza.

The s’mores kit, which won Kosherfest’s award for best new kosher-for-Passover prod-

uct, comes with all the necessary ingredients — mini matzahs, chocolate and marshmallows. The pizza kit, however, contains just triangle-shaped matzah and sauce; moms and dads must provide the cheese and any other toppings.

The kits are so appealingly designed that parents may be tempted to partake.

“We think there’s going to be a lot of adults with kids that are going to be sneaking these items while their kids are off at school,” said President and CEO David Sugarman.

Faux-crab cakes Dyna Sea is a pro in the world of imitation shellfish — “surimi,” as it is called in Japanese — having been in business for nearly 20 years.

The kosher food company even has Japanese consumers buying its products, according to owner Daniel Berlin.

These imitation crab cakes, which won Kosherfest’s best new product award for frozen foods, are made with imported Alaskan pollock. Berlin said they taste very close to the

real deal.

“It has such a beautiful, rich, seafood flavor and a texture, a mouthfeel, that really simulates the real thing,” he said.

And though this reporter has never had a real crab cake, she couldn’t help but go in for a second faux one.

Parve Nutella Kosher-keeping chocoholics know the pain of overly sweet parve chocolate spreads that lack the richness of Nutella and never quite hit the spot.

But this new Italian-produced spread, tapped the best new product at Kosherfest, is a game changer. Parvella CEO Gabriele Zarrugh worked for two years to develop the spread, saying he was motivated by the desire to make a delicious kosher product that was accessible to those with dietary restrictions. Parvella is milk, dairy, egg, peanut and palm-oil free.

Birthday cake and churro-flavored kettle corn Highland Pop President Kimberly Cohen has a thing for popcorn.

In 2012, she opened a small popcorn shop in suburban Chicago. Since then, Cohen has developed nearly 100 flavors of the addictive snack, which she is hoping to distribute nationally.

Kosherfest deemed Highland Pop the best new savory snack. Cohen’s inventive varieties accurately evoke their namesakes: The birthday cake flavor is topped with colorful sprinkles; here’s a kick of cinnamon on the crispy exterior of the cinnamon churro kettle flavor.

Cohen uses coconut oil to cook the kernels both for its health benefits and flavor, she said.

Marzipan rugelach from Israel The Marzipan shop in Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda market has been for decades nearly as much of a tourist destination as the Western Wall.

Once you’re in the shuk, the bakery isn’t hard to locate. The rugelach’s sweet, chocolatey scent wafts its way through the market, enticing visitors to pay a visit and buy a pastry — or maybe 10.

Now the rugelach is available for purchase in the U.S. The chief marketing officer for M Bakeries, its distributor in America, said the company was inspired to get on board after learning that Americans would bring home suitcases full of the pastry from Israel.

The rugelach, which is made according to a secret family recipe, is best served warm, said a person working the Marzipan booth.

This reporter agrees: Fresh out of the oven, the chocolate filling and dough become irresistibly gooey.

Would we be as willing to do this if we had to circumcise at a later age? Would we at the very least reconsider the age at which we do this?

In 2009, an Israel-born woman named Danae Elon produced a movie called “Partly Private” in which she explored the cultural attachment people have to circumcision around the world. She came from an anti-religious home; her father told her that if he could do it over he would not have circumcised his sons.

Now that she was pregnant, she wanted to come from a place of knowledge in reaching her decision whether to circumcise.

While her particular story is certainly of

interest, what I found especially fascinating was a circumcision party she attended in an Arabic community (I believe it was in Turkey), in which they had boys age 6 to 9 circumcised in a spectacle that was very public. And while all the fathers were saying, “My son will go through with it no matter what, he doesn’t have a choice,” when they turned the camera to some of the boys, they gave a thumbs down and expressed their displeasure in having to undergo this procedure. few years ago, a friend of mine who is a shul rabbi, called me with a dilemma.

A family came to him for their son’s bar mitzvah. They weren’t particularly observant, and they had a question about his circumcision — had it been done at the right time and was the person who did the circumcision reliable to do it properly?

I don’t remember the particulars, but I do recall that what I felt was the best option was for the child to have hatafat dam — a largely ceremonial procedure in which the tiniest amount of blood is drawn from the circumcision scar to symbolically turn a medical circumcision into a Bris Milah. This procedure is done on circumcised males who convert to Judaism, and on Jews whose circumcisions were

done in a manner not following Jewish law.

To make a long story short, when the young man was given this information, he balked and did not go through with the procedure. I think they had enough safek (doubt) to go through with the bar mitzvah without it.

I bring all of this as background for a simple question. Shechem the prince agreed to circumcise himself when the brothers insisted upon it, and underwent the procedure right away. So why do we believe that he deserved his fate, to be killed by Shimon and Levi. Did he not try to do the right thing after having done a very wrong thing with Dinah?

The Midrash Sechel Tov says that what he did was for lust and certainly not for the sake of heaven. If he came home and said, “I think we should all do this!” no one would have listened. But when he came home already circumcised, it was an easier sell. albim and Netziv highlight how when he underwent the surgery, his motivation as described in the Torah is “his desire for the daughter of Yaakov.” It’s no longer his love for the young maiden, but to be connected to Yaakov.

There’s an old saying that “money is the root of all evil.” It seems that Shechem used

a desire to be connected to the wealthy Yaakov as the motivating factor behind his circumcision. I’ve heard some people say in jest (though I wonder if they aren’t somewhat serious) that they’d give up an arm or at least a finger to attain a certain financial status and stature. If that’s the case, then what’s the loss of a foreskin? One would typically miss it much less than a limb or even a finger.

And so we need not give credit to Shechem, the opportunist and the rapist, who cared for Dinah only until he had his way with her, and turned to bigger, greener sights when he realized from which family she came.

To answer the opening question, I like to believe that if we had to do this at a later age, we would go for it all the same. I have met many Jews who came from the former Soviet Union, and did not hesitate to circumcise as teenagers and as adults. G-d bless them and their wonderful example of showing what it means to be devoted to G-d, even when the challenge is so difficult. They proved to us that the Jewish people are not deterred by the difficulty they face when the motivation is indeed for the sake of heaven.

Further on we learn this: “In our sages’ observation, ‘Who is wise?

One who sees the future,’ the phrase ‘one who sees the future’ means, literally, ‘one who sees that which will be born.’

And lastly: “Where shall they turn in their shtibel-less suburbia for anchorage, affiliation and identification?”

My dear reader, these are the words of a very wise and scholarly rabbi, reflecting the situation still current in many spiritual venues unto this very day.

And consider that these teachings by Rabbi Pelcovitz were written in … October, 1960!

Vayishlach: Rashi and the pursuit of truth Rabbi david etengoff

P

arashat Vayishlach contains the rather perplexing pasuk: “And G-d went up from him [Jacob] in the place where He had spoken with him.” (Bereishit 35:13)* We immediately find that “the place where He had spoken” with Jacob is not identified.

These words, therefore, do little to advance our understanding of the encounter. Little wonder, then, that this mysterious phrase led Rashi to declare, “I do not know what this is coming to teach us” (“aini yodeah mah

melamdanu”).

Rabbi Shabbetai Bass, in Siftei Chachamim, his celebrated supercommentary on Rashi’s work of Torah exegesis, noted that Rashi cited the words of Reish Lakish: “The Patriarchs were surely the chariots [footstools] of the Almighty,” (Midrash Bereishit Rabbah 82:6) in his explanation of, “And He finished speaking with him, and G-d went up from above Abraham.” (Bereishit 17:22) Why, therefore, asked Rav Bass, did Rashi refrain from employing this interpretation to elucidate our text? He replied that Rashi viewed our verse’s expression, “in the place where He had spoken with him,” as superfluous, since it is not found in the previously referenced parallel verse. As such, Rashi found no rationale for the inclusion of this phrase

in the Torah. It was, therefore, his unshakable intellectual honesty that was the driving force behind his noteworthy admission, “aini yodeah mah melamdanu.”

Professor Nechama Leibowitz zatzal, one of the most renowned Bible scholars and teachers of the previous generation, built upon the conceptual underpinning of Rav Bass’ gloss. She underscored both Rashi’s humility and never-ending search for the truth in her discussion of the one other instance in which Rashi states, “aini yodeah mah melamdanu”: “Why did Rashi see fit to proclaim to the world his failure to find a plausible explanation of the superfluous text? Surely the admonition of our Sages to ‘teach your tongue to say I do not know’ (Talmud Bavli, Berachot

4a) was meant to apply only in response to an inquiry. But no one was called upon gratuitously to proclaim his ignorance. Surely Rashi has left many passages in the Torah unexplained, and he could very well have passed over our text without comment, since he had none to make.”

After formulating this classic problem of Rashi analysis, Leibowitz answered this question in a manner that teaches us a great deal regarding Rashi’s approach to Torah and truth: “Rashi left those texts unexplained which were plain to him that he presumed would be clear to any Torah student. If he had remained silent, in our context, he would have been guilty of misrepresentation, allowing See Vayishlach on page 21

Intellectually, until this day I have no problem justifying such actions. But that does not mean it should come easy. In fact, if a soldier forced to act in such circumstances does not struggle, something is seriously wrong.

Perhaps this is why Yaakov, in the course of this narrative, finally assumes the name Yisrael, because even when doing something entirely correct, he still struggled with the results.

The name Yisrael means to struggle (ibid.

32:29): “For you have struggled with … men and overcome.”

As Jews, we are meant to struggle, not only with what is right, but every bit as much with the impact of what that right course of action might mean.

One of the most difficult battles of the Yom Kippur war took place in the valley just est of Kibbutz El Rom, in the Golan Heights. That valley has become known as “Emek habacha,” the valley of tears. It is so named for the cries of anguish of the Syrian tank crews abandoned on the battlefield, wounded and dying all night long. Incredibly, we were so moved by the pain of our enemies.

Perhaps this struggle will one day lead us to build a world where such struggles are no longer necessary. And in the meantime, blessed are we who feel that pain; that is truly what a Jewish army, and the Jewish people, is meant to be.

Nassau Police were searching on Tuesday for a motorist who fled the scene after striking and severely injuring a West Hempstead rabbi at 7::35 pm on Monday outside the Young Israel of West Hempstead.

Rabbi Jordon Kelemer, 70, was found by a passerby. He sustained a head injury and was transported by Hatzalah Ambulance Corps of Western Nassau.

At a press briefing Tuesday afternoon in Mineola, Lt. Richard Lebron described the rabbi’s condition as “very serious right now.”

He appealed to the public for help in tracking down the vehicle and its driver.

The vehicle was described as a 2004 or 2005 white Dodge pick-up truck with a long tool box in back running the length of the truck.

Lebron discounted the notion that the driver might not have known that he hit someone, saying that Rabbi Kelemer was hit hard. He said that the vehicle likely sustained damage to the driver side front, possibly to its fender, headlight and directional.

“After the rabbi was struck, the vehicle

sped off, heading southbound,” he said.

Police said there were no witnesses to the accident, but that they were in the process of examining surveilance videos.

The rabbi had parked his vehicle across Hempstead Avenue and was crossing the road to the shul, at 630 Hempstead Ave., when he was struck, Lebron said.

“He’s very, very close with the community,” said Rabbi David Warshaw, executive director of the Young Israel of West Hempstead. “For all joyous occasions, all sad occasions, he’s always there. He’s an extremely concerned and dedicated individual who’s really involved with the full life of the congregation.”

Rabbi Warshaw said that there have been prayer services for the rabbi ongoing since Monday night at the shul.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding this accident to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

On Amona: Do not uproot the planted tehilla r. goldberg view from central park

hen I was an elementary school student growing up in Israel, I was part of a strong, idealistic, nationalist Zionist community known as Merkaz Harav (referring to the first Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Palestine, Rav Abraham I. Kuk. When you are a child, especially part of such an intense community, some moments are branded on you forever. For me, one of those events was pinui Yamit, the Israeli withdrawal from the Yamit settlement in the Sinai Peninsula in 1982.

When the Sinai withdrawal was negotiated

by Prime Minister Menachem Begin, the community of Yamit rested on land designated to be part of the new border. To honor the emotionally painful and controversial process of dismantling this community, the late Israeli songwriter Naomi Shemer composed the now famous “Al Kol Eleh,” a song that captures the bittersweet ebb and flow of life.

on the corner of Herzl Boulevard, I handed out stickers to passersby, stickers with the text “al na ta’akor natua, al tishkach et hatikva” (“do not uproot what’s planted, do not lose hope”), one of the verses from Shemer’s “Al Kol Eleh.”

One evening, watching television at our neighbors the Malouls, through tears I saw the rubble of a community, of a life, as bulldozers reduced Yamit to a mound of sand in the desert.

There was one particularly unforgettable scene of a person descending in a cage, by a crane.

I suppose he was one of the defiant ones who were part of the last stand of Yamit.

It all had the melancholy quality of the ancient Psalm, “Al Naharot Bavel” (“On The Rivers of Babylon”), about the post-First Temple

destruction and the finality of Jews being exiled from their land. ince then, Israel has lived through the Gaza disengagement in 2005. Unlike the cold peace with Egypt that the Yamit withdrawal yielded, the disengagement from Gaza resulted in terror rising to a whole new level. And on top of that is the failure in resettling Gaza’s Jewish communities (to this day some of the former Jewish residents of Gaza are displaced).

Now, with Dec. 25 approaching, the tension is mounting about the fate of the settlement of Amona. Already in 2006, when I was living in Israel, Amona had come under fire, literally and figuratively. Palestinians claim Amona is built on their land. The Amona community, which ar-

rived on a barren hilltop, claim otherwise.

Through the efforts of heavily-funded NGOs with an interest in dismantling as many Jewish settlements as possible, the issue has come to a head. Israel’s High Court ruled that Amona was indeed built on Palestinian land. Dec. 25 is the evacuation date.

The rule of law is the rule of law. I believe in legal process, but feel the pain of the situation.

Amona residents feel that had the process been hijacked by agenda-driven NGOs which view settlements monolithically and would like to see every last one dismantled, including settlements configured to be part of future Palestinian State.

The residents of Amona could have talked together with their Palestinian neighbors on ways to mutually resolve the situation and live side by side. Instead, from what I understand, such efforts were stymied.

Regardless of what one believes the right decision here is, I think we can all agree that it is sad to see (paraphrasing Naomi Shemer’s lyrics) the planted, uprooted.

I don’t minimize the personal exile that the Amona families are about to wrestle with, yet I pray that the exodus will be as uncontentious as possible and free of violence.

Trump to release secret Iran-deal docs Jeff dunetz politics to go

O

n 60 Minutes Sunday Night, Prime Minster Binyamin Netanyahu said he plans to come to the U.S. soon to meet with President-elect Donald Trump to lobby him with suggestions on how to scuttle the Iran nuclear deal. However, the scuttlebutt out of the beltway is that before he kills the deal, Trump (who has called the deal “stupid” and a “disgrace”) may use President Obama to “grease the skids.”

The Daily Beast reported last week that one of the first things the new president plans to do is to release the private files outlining hidden agreements made as part of the nuke deal and kept from the public. According to an individual who has participated in those conversations, senior foreign policy transition officials are already discussing what so-far-unseen unclassified information about the Iran agreement they will be able to make public after January.

Bloomberg View reported last month that the

Trump team was looking at declassifying and releasing potentially “embarrassing” Iran nuke dealrelated documents that the Obama administration had classified, including documents linking Iran to Sunni terror groups and outlining cash transfers to Iran which the administration continues to claim were not ransom.

That earlier report described the potentially embarrassing documents that the administration classified to save face, including an intelligence assessment written to excuse capitulation by U.S. negotiators on requiring Iran to disclosing past nuclear work, and a document imagining a world in which Iran will fully cooperate with the deal for the next 20 years.

But there are dozens of other Iran nuke-dealrelated documents which are not even classified secret, but which the Obama administration has nonetheless refused to release. There are broad suspicions that those documents contain embarrassing concessions to Iran: both additional U.S. obligations and exemptions for Iranian obligations. As a technical matter, it would be straightforward to release those documents. As a political matter, the Obama administration has consistently had trouble explaining why the public shouldn’t see them.

eleasing these documents would be celebrated by lawmakers who have opposed the agreement, especially those who opposed it feeling that Congress was compelled to vote without all of the information it was promised. Some of Trump’s cabinet members have been complaining over the lack of transparency about the deal — Gen. Michael Flynn, who will be national security adviser, and Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS), Trump’s choice for CIA director.

According to the Weekly Standard, much of the support for releasing the documents is coming from President Obama’s own party: •Sen. John Tester (D-MT): “Unless there’s a damn good reason to keep them out of the public eye, turn them over. … I’m more on the side of transparency than not, that is for sure. ... But that’s a first blush, not really knowing what’s in them.”

•Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE): “If they’re unclassified, what are they doing in a SCIF [sensitive compartmented information facility]? The entire purpose of a SCIF is to be a place where you can read classified documents.”

•Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ): “They are unclassified. There should be transparency, and that transparency ultimately helps inform the public. …

I think it’s a good idea.”

•Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD): “There are sorts of information you want to protect, and then there are strategic issues that you have to deal with because there might be continued negotiations … If it doesn’t fall in those two categories, I don’t think it should be a concern.” f the Trump administration does release these documents, it would have an element of karma.

Early in his tenure, President Obama declassified and released the justification for approving the CIA’s enhanced interrogation program during President George W. Bush’s tenure.

Here’s the bottom line: Although these documents are unclassified, they’ve been kept secret because had they been released, President Obama would have been embarrassed and the deal might have been scuttled. If they are released, we will know all the capitulations made by President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry made to appease Iran, including the ransom President Obama claims isn’t ransom.

Should he go ahead and release these documents, Trump’s desire to kill the deal will become even more popular, making it easier to remove the U.S. obligations to a deal that Iran has yet to approve.

O

n one of my first assignments abroad as a rookie journalist back in the early 1990s, I found myself in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, just as the violent disintegration of Yugoslavia was getting underway in earnest.

One afternoon, sitting with a group of journalists and writers in a café in the city center, I was drawn into a long conversation with an Israeli professor who was temporarily teaching in Belgrade.

We began comparing nationalism in the Balkans with nationalism in the Middle East, and an observation he made has stuck with me ever since.

“I think the Croats should have an independent state for the same reason as the Palestinians,” he said.

“It’s much better to get screwed over by your own leaders than by someone else’s.”

A quarter century later, Croatia’s achievement of independence seems a distant memory, yet full Palestinian Authority Presi- national sovereignty dent Mahmoud Abbas. UN remains elusive for the Palestinians.

True, the Palestinian Authority (PA), created in 1994, is widely regarded — including in Israel — as a stepping stone on the path to negotiated statehood. But successive Israeli prime ministers, among them Ehud Barak of Labor and Ehud Olmert of Likud, have offered serious concessions to the Palestinian leadership—in essence, a state in more than 90 percent of the West Bank and Gaza, with land swaps also part of the bargain—only to have these rebuffed for one simple reason: neither the late Yasser Arafat nor his successor Mahmoud Abbas, never mind the Islamists of Hamas, have been willing to make peace, philosophically or politically, with the legitimacy of Israel’s presence in the region as a Jewish and democratic state.

In some ways, this persistent pattern suggests that my Israeli interlocutor all those years ago was wrong: even if you don’t have an independent state, you absolutely can get screwed over by your own leaders, when those same leaders decide to blame someone else’s leaders for your ongoing misfortune. he two-state solution, a foundation of international efforts to bring a solution to this corner of the Middle East, has been obstructed by many factors, most of all Palestinian discomfort with the very idea of a Jewish state in what Hamas and others consider the “Dar al Islam”—the domain of Islam. That viewpoint, and not the promise of peace based on economic cooperation as envisaged by politicians as varied as former Israeli President Shimon Peres and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, has counted for far more.

But the most tangible result of this rejectionism has been to freeze negotiations on Palestinian independence. The result is that two other solutions, both of them fraught with risk, are now in the mix.

The first “solution” involves elements of both Palestinian unilateralism and international pressure on Israel; in essence, recognizing a Palestinian state without Israeli consent, and pressuring Israel to concede territory that it currently controls. In the final days of the Obama administration, it’s an approach that is again being mooted in the context of a United Nations Security Council resolution.

Will this resolution be a gift of sorts to the Palestinians from the departing administration of President Obama? Concern about that prospect has been widespread, with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, among others, forcefully restating the importance of achieving peace through direct negotiations between Israel and the PA. Those concerns were heightened with the recent publication of a New York Times op-ed by former President Jimmy Carter, a proponent of the slander that Israel is evolving into an apartheid state, calling for American recognition of “Palestine” through a U.N. Security Council resolution that would define

the end of result of negotiations before they begin, and punish Israel for not following these measures to the letter. The concerns were further solidified by the rather bitter recent comments of Secretary of State John Kerry, in which he portrayed Israeli settlements rather than Palestinian eliminationism as the key obstacle to ending the conflict.

Here is where we come to the second “solution.”

In a speech to the Brookings Institution, Kerry highlighted the remark of Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett that Israel had reached “the end of the two-state solution.” That internal Israeli discussion, which doesn’t change the fact that government policy remains committed to a secure state of Israel alongside a demilitarized Palestinian state, has attracted a good deal of attention, especially now that certain aides to President-elect Donald Trump have been expressing sentiments similar to

Bennett’s. A Wall Street Journal report on the issue even cited the head of a leading Palestinian think tank observing that, in this political climate, “There are people who say let’s have members in the Knesset from Nablus, Hebron and Ramallah.” srael should resist international pressure for an imposed solution. At the same time, Israeli politicians should be more wary of the implications of rejecting a two-state solution. The relationships that Israel has developed with Sunni Arab countries confronted by growing Iranian power are of major strategic value; the question, then, is whether it is worth risking those relationships’ further enhancement with provocative statements which suggest that Israel has turned its back on Palestinian statehood.

Kerry himself addressed this point. “There will be no separate peace between Israel and the Arab world … without advancing the Palestinian issue,”

he declared. “Everybody needs to understand that.

That is a hard reality.”

Yet by developing closer relations with Israel, Arab states might in fact exercise positive influence on the Palestinian leadership.

This is a leadership which still can’t accept that the Palestinian question is no longer at the heart of the Middle East conflict — which is one reason why it pursues offensive and self-defeating initiatives like securing an apology from the U.K. government for the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which promised a “Jewish national home” in Mandatory Palestine. If the outside world wants to be useful, it should start cultivating a new generation of Palestinian leaders who grasp this strategic reality, paving the way for a solution that enables Jews and Arabs alike to live with dignity and opportunity.

I am be a bit rough around the edges, but I am a man of my word, you never need to worry about something if I say it will be done.”

Even if he can’t help, that’s an important thing to know up front.

“If I already have three or four catering jobs booked on the same day, I’ll tell a customer from the outset that I can’t take on an additional job,” he says.

Austein insists he will not serve anything he himself would not eat, and he is persnickety about using the highest quality ingredients.

If you happen to prefer a fleischig affair, Wing Wan Chinese (of which he is a minority partner — bet you didn’t know that either!) can fill the need.

Being based in West Hempstead for so long, Austein is thrilled that the town has become such a hot destination for young observant couples and families. “Rabbi Kelemer has been a longtime pillar of our community, HANC’s elementary school is located right here, the LIRR and Southern State are close by, and the affordability of housing makes for a great place to live,” he says. “It’s a heimish, low-key kind of community, with a great deal of closeness.

The shuls all work together, everyone is there to help each other; there are no cliques in West Hempstead.”

Hunki’s name

Thirdly, how did Hunki’s acquire it’s unusual name? When they started in business 35 year ago, Austein’s partner Milton played on the Yeshiva University basketball team with two other Miltons.

His nickname was … you guessed it … Hunki.

“Much more memorable than Richie’s Pizza or Milton’s Pizza,” Austein quips.

like fun,” Slusky told JTA. “There was a car ride that has become one of our family stories,” she said. “The conversation topic was, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ My mother was describing how, as a scientist, she shoots lasers at crystals. My father is a patent attorney, and he told us how he talks to people and he writes things. And I said, ‘OK, I’m going to be a scientist.’ And my brother said, ‘Can boys be scientists, too’?”

Slusky attended both Orthodox and Conservative day schools and has always kept Shabbat and kashrut.

She said her identity is shaped by both her Jewish tradition and her work.

“It’s something I think about a lot,” she said. “I believe that science is fundamentally answering the question of ‘how,’ and Judaism is answering the question of ‘why,’ and those things aren’t in contrast for me. They’re very much two sides coming together.”

Slusky’s first job in the sciences, technically, was as a high school-aged babysitter for the children of a professor of molecular genetics. When he learned that she was interested in biochemistry, he connected her to Dr. Terry Goss Kinzy at Rutgers University, in whose lab she worked for two summers.

From there, after earning a degree in chemistry from Princeton, to further nurture her commitment to Jewish learning she spent a year at the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. She then pursued a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by postdoctoral work at Sweden’s Stockholm University and the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. She joined the University of Kansas faculty in 2014.

Along the way, Slusky discovered protein design, which is the study and application of the relationship between amino-acid sequencing and resultant 3-D protein structures. Shortly after establishing her lab at K.U., while investigating what she calls a “scientifically interesting” question about protein-protein interactions, she created a new protein, but eventually set it aside.

“And then, through conversations with colleagues about antibiotic resistance, I got to thinking, ‘I wonder if this protein that I have in the freezer could make bacteria susceptible to antibiotics,” she recalled. “The whole goal of my work is, instead of making new antibiotics, to make the old antibiotics work like new.”

The call for applications from the Moore Foundation — established by Intel Corp. co-founder Gordon Moore — came shortly after Slusky’s breakthrough. The funds will allow Slusky to expand her lab, while the publicity could garner more interest and resources, helping her establish enough data to ready the protein for clinical trials — and possibly an approved, effective treatment within 20 years.

“It’s just fantastic,” she said of the accolades and the potential to help save lives.

“Hopefully it will snowball.”

Regardless, Slusky knows there is much work ahead — though, of course, not on Shabbat, which she and her family observe. “I’m excited,” she said, showing off another gadget in her lab, a contraption that stirs solutions using a magnetic coil and a metal bar.

“How great is that?”

It’s pretty great — so great that even a psychology major feels the excitement.

The work that Slusky is doing at the University of Kansas, where she is an assistant professor of molecular biosciences and computational biology, may ultimately save millions of lives.

A protein she designed appears to be one of the most promising responses yet to the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It’s a scourge that infects two million Americans each year — more than 23,000 fatally — according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some world health officials project that by 2050, antibiotic resistance, if unchecked, could be responsible for more deaths globally than from all forms of cancer combined.

Slusky’s innovation earned the attention of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, which in November named her one of the first five Moore Inventor Fellows.

As such, she will receive $825,000 over three years to fund her research, including $50,000 a year from the University of Kansas.

It’s an important crossroads for the prospects for global health and a remarkable achievement for the 37-year-old Jewish biochemist, who never saw herself as an “inventor scientist” — a term she admits that she, well, invented.

Growing up in an observant Jewish home in New Jersey, Slusky knew from a young age that she wanted to be a scientist. That’s largely thanks to her mother, a Bell Labs physicist who was one of the first women to earn a doctorate in physics at Princeton, who made science “sound

Study: Jews are most educated religious group

By JTA Jews are the world’s most-educated religious group, with an average of more than 13 years of formal schooling, according to a Pew Research Center study published Tuesday.

Jews worldwide have four years more of schooling on average than the next-most educated group, Christians, who average about nine years of schooling. Muslims and Hindus are the least-educated religious groups, each with about 5-1/2 years of formal schooling.

The global average is less than eight years.

Jews led the groups in several other categories. Jewish men and women have the smallest average gap in years of formal schooling at zero (Hindu women, on the other extreme, trail men by 2.7 years). Jews were the most educated in the 55 to74 year-old category.

Sixty-one percent of Jews have at least some post-high school education; the global average is 14 percent. Ninety-nine percent of Jews have had some formal schooling.

American Jews have the highest rate of higher education, at 75 percent (compared to 40 percent of Americans generally), and have an average of 14.7 years of schooling. Jewish Israelis have an average of 12 years of schooling, and 46 percent have had higher education.

Among Jews worldwide, 25 to 34, women are more educated than men. Jewish women in that age group have more than 14 years of formal schooling on average, and nearly 70 percent have attended some form of higher ed.

Britain: Anti-Israel hate speech is anti-Semitism Britain is set to adopt a definition of antiSemitism that includes calling Israel an inherently racist country and making comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany.

Prime Minister Theresa May agreed to adopt the definition that was introduced recently by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, the Jewish Chronicle reported Monday.

The alliance’s definition says anti-Semitism “might include the targeting of the State of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity,” though “criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as anti-Semitic.”

The examples section of the definition includes classic forms of Jew hatred such as “stereotypical allegations about Jews as such” and spreading conspiracy theories about Jews, as well as calls to harm Jews.

They thought family lost in Shoah, united in Israel Two pairs of Polish Jewish siblings, who each believed their entire families died in the Holocaust, met for the first time at the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem.

The tale started earlier this year when one of the siblings, Fania Blakay, found a testimony in the Yad Vashem database about her father. The testimony had been filled out by her father’s brother-in-law, who Blakay had been told had died.

The brother in-law, it turns out, had actually survived the Holocaust and immigrated with his wife and daughters to Israel. The daughters — Blakay’s cousins — were living in Israel.

On Tuesday, Blakay and her brother Gennadi Band were united with their first cousins Henia Moskowitz and Rywka Patchnik.

“I am deeply moved and very happy,” Blakay said, according to a statement. “My

Facebook screens live brain surgeries from Israel JERUSALEM — More than half a million viewers saw brain surgeries taking place at a southern Israeli hospital, live on Facebook on Tuesday.

The videos were screened on the Facebook page of Clalit, one of Israel’s four health care

networks. Soroka Medical Center, the only major medical center in the Negev region, serving more than 1 million, is a Clalit hospital.

In one procedure screened, doctors during a three-hour operation successfully removed a benign tumor from a woman in her 50s. The patient is recovering at the hospital.

The patient agreed to be filmed to enable the public to learn about the work of Soroka doctors and the brain center that opened recently at the medical center, according to a hospital spokesman.

Israeli officials to snub Swedish foreign minister JERUSALEM — Top Israeli officials said they will be too busy to meet with Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom during her visit to the country — reportedly an intentional snub over her vocal criticism of the Jewish state.

In January, Wallstrom accused Israel of extrajudicial killings and called for an investigation into Israel’s killing of Palestinian attackers during the attacks.

Following the accusation, Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon told the Associated Press that “given the incendiary and aggressive nature” of Wallstrom’s comments, “we have made it clear that she is not welcome in Israel.”

In November 2015, Wallstrom linked the Paris terrorist attacks that killed 130, which were blamed on the Islamic State, to perceived hopelessness among the Palestinians.

U.S. F-35 stealth fighter jets arrive in Israel JERUSALEM — Two F-35 stealth fighter jets touched down in Israel on Monday for a handover ceremony from their American pilots to their Israeli pilots.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter was in Israel for the arrival. Earlier in the day, Carter met in Tel Aviv with his Israeli counterpart, Avigdor Liberman, and they “discussed the depth and strength of the U.S.-Israeli relationship and reflected on the unprecedented defense cooperation between our two countries over the last eight years — including robust developments on missile defense, counter-tunneling, cyber security and intelligence sharing,” according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Ohio Senate approves an anti-BDS bill WASHINGTON — The Ohio Senate approved a bill targeting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, all but assuring it will become law.

The bill passed Dec. 8 by a vote of 26-5 and now awaits Gov. John Kasich’s signature.

The state’s House of Representatives passed the measure last month.

The legislation prohibits the state from contracting with companies that engage in boycotts of Israel, including firms located outside of the state. It also would require companies to explicitly state in contracts that they are not boycotting or divesting from Israel, according to the Cleveland Jewish News.

States that have passed anti-BDS legislation include Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and South Carolina.

DNA leads Dutch to arrest in 1990 murder of Israeli AMSTERDAM — Based on DNA analysis, Dutch police arrested an Israeli man whom they say killed an Israeli woman in the Netherlands 26 years ago.

Officers reinvestigating the case identified the suspect in the 1990 lethal stabbing of Miriam Sharon in The Hague as Daniel Amunah, who has a history of property and drug-related crimes.

Amunah, now 52, had been briefly considered as a suspect directly after Sharon’s death but was released for lack of evidence, Ynet reported.

Amunah was arrested again in August this year in connection with Sharon’s death based on newly discovered DNA evidence upon entering the Netherlands, according to Ynet. The report revealed for the first time the identity of the suspect who was arrested in August and who police believed to be the killer.

According to “Een Vandaag,” a Dutch investigative journalism television program, the new evidence analyzed by a team appointed to re-examine the cold case included a cigarette butt and a black leather coat.

Obama calls Israeli-PA diplomacy critical WASHINGTON — President Obama, in his final speech on national security, said diplomatic engagement is “required” to resolve Middle Eastern conflicts.

The remarks came as top officials in the outgoing administration hope to influence Presidentelect Donald Trump to maintain its diplomatic initiatives, particularly regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Iran nuclear deal.

“Just think about what we’ve done these last eight years without firing a shot,” Obama said Dec. 6, addressing troops at an Air Force base in Tampa, Florida. “We’ve rolled back Iran’s nuclear program.
