After Obama’s dark betrayal, Friedman lights C’hurst night

On Wednesday, Secretary of State John Kerry doubled down on the Obama administration’s assault on Israel. He blamed stalled hopes for peace on “extreme elements” in the “settler movement.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded that “Israelis do not need to be lectured about the importance of peace by foreign leaders” and pointed out that it was Palestinian intransigence and hatred, not “settlers,” who blocked peace.

Declaring that “this administration has been Israel’s greatest friend and supporter,” a combative Secretary of State John Kerry attacked Israeli policy on Wednesday.

In a lengthy televised address from the State Department in Washington, Kerry said that last Friday’s anti-Israel resolution in the U.N. Security Council conformed to U.S. policy. He proclaimed Israel’s “pernicious policy of settlement construction” a critical obstacle to peace.

Bibi is ‘deeply disappointed’ in Kerry’s speech

By JTA Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected on Wednesday afternoon a policy speech by Secretary of State John Kerry, saying the emphasis by the United Nations and the Obama administration on settlement construction downplayed the role of Palestinian repudiation of Israel’s legitimacy as an obstacle to peace.

“How can you make peace with someone who rejects your very existence?” Netanyahu said an hour after Kerry spoke. “This conflict is not about houses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, Gaza or anywhere else. This conflict has always been about Israel’s very right to exist.”

Kerry in his lengthy remarks at the State Department defended the U.S. abstention on a U.N. Security Council resolution Friday that condemned Israeli settlement construction.

He also defended the Obama administration’s support for Israel and laid out six principles to guide future Israel-Palestinian peace talks.

Netanyahu said Israelis were “deeply disappointed” in Kerry’s speech and that the focus on settlements is misplaced, as Israel is the only stable democracy in a chaotic region.

spreading,” he said. “And for an hour, the secretary of state is attacking the only democracy in the Middle East, that guards stability in the Middle East.”

Netanyahu reiterated his stance that the only way to reach Israeli-Palestinian peace is through direct negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Israel.

He also reiterated the accusation that the United States engineered the passage of the Security Council resolution, despite repeated denials from Washington, and called on the Obama administration to block any further attempts to condemn Israel at the U.N. “We have it on absolute, incontestable evidence that the United States organized, advanced and brought this resolution to the United Nations Security Council,” Netanyahu said.

“I think the United States, if it’s true to its word, should now come out and say, ‘We will not allow any more resolutions in the Security Council on Israel, period’.”

President-elect Donald Trump opposed the Security Council resolution, and Netanyahu said Wednesday that “Israel looks forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump and with the American Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, to mitigate the damage this resolution has done, and ultimately to repeal it.”

The text of Kerry’s speech can be found at TheJewishStar.com. must express my deep disappointment with the speech today of John Kerry, a speech that was almost as unbalanced as the anti-Israel resolution passed at the U.N. last week. In a speech ostensibly about peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Secretary Kerry paid lip service to the unremitting campaign of terrorism that has been waged by the Palestinians against the Jewish state for nearly a century.

What he did was to spend most of his speech blaming Israel for the lack of peace by passionately condemning a policy of enabling Jews to live in their historic homeland and in their eternal capital, Jerusalem.

Hundreds of suicide bombings, thousand, tens of thousands of rockets, millions of Israelis in bomb shelters are not throwaway lines in a speech — they’re the realities that the people of Israel had to endure because of mistaken policies, policies that at the time won the thunderous applause of the world. I don’t seek applause; I seek the security, and peace, and prosperity and the future of the Jewish state. The Jewish people have sought their place under the sun for 3,000 years, and we’re not about to be swayed by mistaken policies that have caused great, great damage.

Israelis do not need to be lectured about the importance of peace by foreign leaders. Israel’s hand has been extended in peace to its neighbors from day one, from its very first day. We’ve prayed for peace, we’ve worked for it every day since then. And thousands of Israeli families have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country and advance peace.

My family has been one of them; there are many, many others. o one wants peace more than the people of Israel. Israel remains committed to resolving the outstanding differences between us and the Palestinians through direct negotiations. This is how we made peace with Egypt; this is how we made peace with Jordan; it’s the only way we’ll make peace with the Palestinians. That has always been Israel’s policy; that has always been America’s policy.

Here’s what President Obama himself said at the U.N. in 2011. He said: “Peace is hard work. Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations. If it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now.”

That’s what President Obama said, and he was right. And until last week this was repeated over and over again as American policy. Secretary Kerry said that the United States cannot vote against its own policy. But that’s exactly what it did at the U.N., and that’s why Israel opposed last week’s Security Council resolution, because it effectively calls the Western Wall “occupied Palestinian Territory,” because it encourages boycotts and sanctions against

Israel — that’s what it effectively does, and because it reflects a radical shift in U.S. policy towards the Palestinians on final status issues that we always agreed, the U.S. and Israel, have to be negotiated directly, face to face without preconditions.

That shift happened despite the Palestinians walking away from peace and from peace offers time and time again, despite their refusal to even negotiate peace for the past eight years, and despite the Palestinian Authority inculcating a culture of hatred towards Israel in an entire generation of young Palestinians.

Israel looks forward to working with President-elect Trump and with the American Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, to mitigate the damage that this resolution has done and ultimately, to repeal it. srael hopes that the outgoing Obama Administration will prevent any more damage being done to Israel at the U.N. in its waning days. I wish I could be comforted by the promise that the U.S. says we will not bring any more resolutions to the U.N. That’s what they said about the previous resolution. We have it on absolutely incontestable evidence that the United States organized, advanced and brought this resolution to the United Nations Security Council. We’ll share that information with the incoming administration. Some of it is sensitive, it’s all true. You saw some of it in the protocol released in an Egyptian paper.

There’s plenty more; it’s the tip of the iceberg.

So they say, but we didn’t bring it. And they could take John Kerry’s speech with the six points. It could be raised in the French international conference a few days from now and then brought to the U.N. So France will bring it, or Sweden — not a noted friend of Israel — could bring it. And the United States could say, well, we can’t vote against our own policy, we’ve just annunciated it.

I think the United States, if it’s true to its word, or at least if it’s now true to its word, should now come out and say we will not allow any resolutions, any more resolutions in the Security Council on Israel. Period. Not we will bring or not bring — we will not allow any, and stop this game, the charades.

I think that the decisions that are vital to Israel’s interests and the future of its children, they won’t be made through speeches in Washington or votes in the United Nations or conferences in Paris. They’ll be made by the government of Israel around the negotiating table, making them on behalf of the one and only Jewish state — a sovereign nation that is the master of its own fate. nd one final thought. I personally know the pain, the loss and the suffering of war. That’s why I’m so committed to peace. Because for anyone who’s experienced it, as I have, war and terror are horrible. I want young Palestinian children to be educated like our children, for peace. But they’re not educated for peace. The Palestinian Authority educates them to lionize terrorists and to murder Israelis.

My vision is that Israelis and Palestinians both have a future of mutual recognition, of dignity, mutual respect, co-existence.

But the Palestinian Authority tells them that they will never accept, should never accept, the existence of a Jewish state.

So, I ask you, how can you make peace with someone who rejects your very existence?

See, this conflict is not about houses, or communities in the West Bank, Judea and Samaria, the Gaza district or anywhere else. This conflict is and has always been about Israel’s very right to exist. That’s why my hundreds of calls to sit with President Abbas for peace talks have gone unanswered. That’s why my invitation to him to come to the Knesset was never answered. That’s why the Palestinian government continues to pay anyone who murders Israelis a monthly salary.

The persistent Palestinian refusal to recognize a Jewish state remains the core of the conflict and its removal is the key to peace.

Palestinian rejection of Israel and support for terror are what the nations of the world should focus on if they truly want to advance peace, and I can only express my regret and say that it’s a shame that Secretary Kerry does not see this simple truth.

the Obama strategy produced paralysis. The Palestinians now expect to be rewarded with Israeli concessions simply for showing up at the negotiating table. And if they don’t get any, they apparently are content to sit on their hands and wait for the international community to impose a solution.

By letting the resolution pass, the Obama administration has essentially validated that strategy while boosting right-wing politicians in Israel now pressing Netanyahu to abandon the two-state approach entirely.

2. Did Netanyahu blow diplomatic gains

believe, former Israeli Prime Ministers Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert translated warm relations with President George W. Bush into unprecedented U.S. acceptance of continued, albeit limited, settlement construction prior to a final status agreement. Compare that to where things stand today and it makes sense to take a look at Netanyahu’s approach to the Obama administration.

Two caveats before jumping in: Just what the Bush administration agreed to regarding settlement construction and how formal those agreements were are a matter of debate. And let’s acknowledge there is little to suggest that Obama and his aides had any interest in run-

ning with the Bush-Sharon/Olmert framework.

That said, if Netanyahu was serious about securing the Obama administration’s support for the maximal Israeli view of the Bush-Sharon understandings — in particular the green light on building in certain settlements — he had a funny way of showing it.

By all accounts, the Israeli quid in the deal was the unambiguous endorsement of a Palestinian state plus the Gaza disengagement and dismantling of the four West Bank settlements. Netanyahu campaigned against all of the above and spent his first few months in office refusing to reaffirm Israel’s support for Palestinian statehood. Yes, after a few months in office, Netanyahu embraced the two-state goal, but by then suspicions about his true intentions had increased — doubts that were reinforced by Netanyahu’s assertion during the 2015 campaign that no Palestinian state would be created on his watch.

Another, perhaps more important, shift was Netanyahu’s abandonment of Sharon and Olmert’s strategy of bending over backwards to downplay disagreements with the White House. If anything, Team Netanyahu took the opposite approach, from airing public disagreements to disparaging Obama administration officials to playing footsie with Republicans.

However wrong you think Obama was last week (or during the past eight years), it’s still worth asking whether a more cordial and collaborative approach from Netanyahu would have produced a different outcome.

By Ami Eden, JTA executive editor Emotions are running high following the Obama administration’s decision to allow the U.N. Security Council to pass a resolution condemning Israeli settlements. Here are seven questions aimed at making sense of what went down and what it could mean moving forward.

1. Did Obama just double down on failed “settlements first” strategy?

Listening to President Barack Obama’s aides, the decision to allow Friday’s U.N. Security Council resolution to pass was a last-gasp move borne out of frustration and distrust.

But in many respects it resembles the Obama administration’s failed opening maneuver.

Obama took a hot-and-cold approach to Israel, simultaneously strengthening military and intelligence cooperation while stepping up criticism of the settlements. The plan reportedly was to pressure Netanyahu into accepting a settlement freeze, which in turn would potentially lead to meaningful diplomatic gestures from multiple Arab states (including Saudi Arabia) and get the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table.

Netanyahu eventually accepted a modified 10-month freeze, but the Obama folks either over-promised or were rolled by Arab interlocutors and the Palestinians. In one instance, in September 2009, Obama officials said a number of Arab states — not including Saudi Arabia — were ready to announce overtures to Israel, but no meaningful gestures ever emerged from the wider Arab world, and Abbas didn’t show up for talks until the freeze was about to expire — and then promptly insisted on an extension of the freeze in exchange for their continuation.

JPost rips Bibi response to hurtful vote at U.N. A Jerusalem Post editorial on Wednesday criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu’s response to last Friday’s anti-Israel vote. Under the headline, “Bibi’s fight against U.N. vote is making matters worse,” the frequently Netanyahu-friendly voice warned that the PM’s approach would be viewed as “petty and vindictive and will therefore be counterproductive” and “risks exposing Israel to a further deterioration in relations with the U.S. in the three-and-a-half weeks that remain of the Obama administration’s term.”

••• Israel is worse off after U.N. Security Council Resolution 2334, but instead of mitigating the damage, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be making matters worse.

He has embarked on a diplomatic offensive that threatens to further isolate Israel and squander important diplomatic credit with the U.S. Congress and the incoming Trump administration over yet another anti-Israel U.N. resolution.

He risks exposing Israel to a further deterioration in relations with the U.S. in the three-and-a-half weeks that remain of the Obama administration’s term.

He is also further alienating the nation’s diplomatic corps in the Foreign Ministry, most of whom are undoubtedly opposed to the prime minister’s recent actions.

Considering the possibility that Obama might be planning further moves against Israel at the U.N. in the weeks that remain to his term, there is some justification to trying to create a deterrence. Nevertheless, since Israel needs the world more than the world needs Israel, the question is how much damage will Netanyahu’s retributive campaign do before it likely fails.

As The Jerusalem Post’s diplomatic correspondent Herb Keinon pointed out, Netanyahu seemed to be operating on the premise that Israel’s status in the world has changed; for Israel is today courted by the world with much to offer in the fields of cyber security, agriculture, water management and military technology.

Therefore — so the reasoning goes — Israel is now in a position to punish countries by denying them the benefits that the Jewish state has to offer. As one senior government official put it, the government’s moves were meant to signal to the world both Israel’s deep displeasure and that these types of steps will not simply be overlooked.

Netanyahu summoned representatives of all the countries that voted for the resolution in the Security Council that have diplomatic missions in Israel – and he did it on Christmas Day. For Christian-majority countries like France and Britain, the timing of this dressing down must have been particularly disconcerting. Netanyahu also ordered his ministers to minimize their dealings with all 14 countries that voted in favor of the resolution.

Netanyahu chose not to schedule a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May at the World Economic Forum in Davos next month in protest against Britain’s vote. This is the same May that just two weeks ago, in an address to the Conservative Friends of Israel, referred to Israel as “a remarkable country” and a “beacon of tolerance” and said that the UK’s ties with Israel are “crucial.”

In response to Palestinian attempts to annul the 1917 Balfour Declaration, she described

the document as “one of the most important letters in history.”

Rebuffing countries like Britain and France over a Security Council vote will not overturn the decision and will not gain Israel any new diplomatic clout. Extending the same reasoning to all the countries that regularly vote in the U.N. against Israel would leave us with few friends — maybe the Czech Republic, the U.S. and Micronesia.

In the bilateral relations between Israel and a superpower like China, another country that voted against Israel, there is no doubt as to who is the primary beneficiary.

Netanyahu’s decision to cut aid to Senegal for its role in advancing resolution 2442 might really hurt the impoverished nation, and it will rightly be perceived as petty and vindictive and will therefore be counterproductive.

Attempting to enlist Congress to punish states and organizations, such as the U.N., that seek to harm Israel is misguided. We question the logic of using up important credit with Congress to launch a worldwide offensive over a Security Council resolution.

Resolution 2334 will cause damage to Israel. It will harden Palestinian intransigence and embolden the BDS movement.

The world does not support Israeli settlements in the West Bank and sees them as a violation of international law.

The U.N. is an institution that operates according to its own rules – a sort of alternative universe. Countries’ votes do not accurately reflect the level of their support for Israel.

New Zealand cannot be construed as hostile to Israel. Even Egypt took the extraordinary step of pulling its resolution at the last minute and maintains a stable though cold peace with Israel with extensive military cooperation.

The government should be spending its time crafting a long-term strategy for Israel and working on how to build diplomatic ties across the globe, not on how to cut them.

Moving the embassy to Jerusalem would mark both a shift in longstanding U.S. policy and recognition of Israel’s full sovereignty in its capital. President-elect Trump has also drawn impassioned reactions to his appointment of a pro-settlement ambassador to Israel, his close friend and adviser David Friedman.

Friedman, who speaks Hebrew fluently, recently served as president of the American Friends of Beit El, helping to raise millions of dollars for the large Beit El settlement in Samaria. including a $10,000 donation in 2003 from Donald Trump.

Upon being named ambassador, Friedman said he intended to “strengthen the bond between our two countries and advance the cause of peace within the region,” adding that he looked forward “to doing this from the U.S. embassy in Israel’s eternal capital, Jerusalem.”

Calls for the embassy move have been heralded within Israel by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others, including Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

“The United States of America has embassies in all of the world’s capitals with the exception of Israel,” Barkat said. “That’s absurd, and moving the embassy to the capital of the Jewish people, to Jerusalem, is a straightforward, standard thing to do.”

Yet the move has been panned by the Palestinian Authority, which has insisted—along with many sympathetic members of the international community—that Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem is an issue that should be reserved for final-status negotiations to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Longtime Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat recently warned that moving the embassy could effectively “destroy the peace process,” and threatened that

the move would send the region into a “path of chaos, lawlessness and extremism.”

Erekat also stated that “the issues for negotiations” within the peace process are “Jerusalem, borders, settlements, the regime, security,” adding that “no one should preempt or prejudge, because this will be a destruction of the peace process as a whole.”

Recognizing Israel’s capital Typically, any country’s foreign embassies are located in the capital city of a country.

Despite the fact that Israel set up its capital in Jerusalem with the founding of its modern state in 1948, many nations, including the U.S.,

have established their embassies in Tel Aviv as part of a refusal to recognize Israel’s annexation of eastern sections of Jerusalem and the unification of the city following the Jewish state’s victory in the 1967 Six-Day War. Jordan controlled eastern Jerusalem from 1948-1967.

Israel has been pressing nations for decades to move their embassies to Jerusalem. In 1995, Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act, calling for the U.S. embassy to be officially moved by 1999.

But the measure included a provision in which the president could postpone the move every six months by executive order “to protect the national secuYonatan Sindel/Flash90 rity interests of the United States.” Since the act’s passage, Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have each continuously exercised this provision, with Obama signing the most recent six-month waiver in November.

If Trump wishes to move the embassy, all he would need to do is not sign the upcoming waiver, according to U.S. law. As such, Trump and Friedman’s resolve to move the embassy in the face of Palestinian threats may represent a litmus test for an incoming administration that has been openly challenging the current nature of U.S. diplomacy toward Israel.

“This conflict is not about houses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, Gaza or anywhere else,” Netanyahu said from Jerusalem. “This conflict has always been about Israel’s very right to exist.”

“Despite our best efforts over the years, the two-state solution is now in serious jeopardy,” Kerry said. “The truth is that trends on the ground — violence, terrorism, incitement, settlement expansion and the seemingly endless occupation — are combining to destroy hopes for peace on both sides and increasingly cementing an irreversible one-state reality that most people do not actually want.”

Speaking directly to Israeli criticism of the U.S. abstention on the Security Council vote — which allowed it to pass — Kerry said, “It is not this resolution that is isolating Israel, it is the pernicious policy of settlement construction that is making peace impossible.”

Kerry dwelled at length on Israeli policy in Judea and Samaria, charging leaders of the settlement movement with “purposefully accelerating” trends that will make a two-state solution impossible. Kerry noted that the Israeli settler population has grown by 270,000 since Obama took office in 2009 and he lamented the reversal of trends toward greater Palestinian control initiated with the 1993 Oslo Accords.

“The Israeli prime minister publicly supports a two-state solution, but his current coalition is the most right-wing in Israel’s history, with an agenda driven by the most extreme elements,” Kerry said. “Policies of this government, which the prime minister just described as more committed to settlements than any in Israel’s history, are leading in the opposite direction. They’re leading to one state.”

“The two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” Kerry said. “It is the only way to ensure Israel’s future as a Jewish and democratic state living in peace and security with its neighbors. It is the only way to ensure a future of freedom and dignity for the Palestinian people, and it is an important way of advancing United States interests in the region.”

Kerry voiced relatively brief criticism of Palestinians — he reserved the bulk of criticism for Israeli settlements — condemning their incitement to violence and glorification of terrorists, and he bemoaned their attempt to isolate and delegitimize Israel in the United Nations and elsewhere.

“The murders of innocents are still glorified on Fatah websites,” Kerry said, referring to the political faction headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. “Despite statements by President Abbas, too often they send a different message by failing to condemn specific attacks and by naming public squares, streets and schools after terrorists.”

In the face of intense criticism from Israeli leaders and pro-Israel voices in the United States, Kerry also emphasized the abiding American support for Israeli security going back decades and asserted that President Obama had pro-Israel bona fides, noting unprecedented American military assistance for Israel and the administration’s opposition to attempts to isolate Israel in international forums.

“No American administration has done more for Israel’s security than Barack Obama’s,” Kerry said.

Kerry laid out six principles that he said the U.S. believes must govern the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: •Secure, recognized borders based on the 1967 lines, with mutually agreed land swaps and a contiguous state for the Palestinians.

YU boys high lands $1-mil scholar fund In honor of the centennial celebration of the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy/Yeshiva University High School for Boys (YUHSB), Hyman Arbesfeld has made a $1 million gift to establish the Abraham Arbesfeld Scholarship Fund, named in honor of his late father.

Arbesfeld is a YU Guardian and a Benefactor and vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS). He has a long, personal history with YU. In 1945, he entered YUHSB, encouraged by his father to study Torah rather than attend the Bronx High School of Science, which was the boy’s first choice. As a scholarship recipient, he was so grateful for the opportunity to attend that he never missed a day of classes in four years.

“I was lucky enough to go through my entire YU education, from high school to RIETS, supported by scholarships,” said Arbesfeld. “I made this gift in honor of my father because without his encouragement and love, I would not have had the rich Jewish life that I have been so fortunate to lead. This gift will reassure families that they can send their sons to the high school without worrying about tuition, just the way my scholarships reassured my father.”

Arbesfeld attended Yeshiva College and received semicha from RIETS. The Midreshet Shalhevet mock trial team has started breaking down the case for this year’s New York State High School Mock Trial Tournament. It is a complicated case, in which the plaintiff is suing for malicious prosecution. The team analyzed the witnesses and evidence for the defense and prosecution, and started to decide how to bring in the evidence.

They have just been awarded their parts for the trial.

The lawyers will be team captain Avgayil Lev, senior of Woodmere; co-captain Avigail Borah, senior of Hewlett; Sarit Perl, senior of Atlantic Beach; junior Aviva Marmer of Brooklyn, and sophomore Yael Simon of Queens. SKA girls make sweet harmony at Production ‘16

The Jewish holidays were beautifully depicted at this year’s Production of the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls, with beautiful harmonies, comical dramas, superbly choreographed dances, and an inspiring sign language presentation.

On motzei Shabbat, Dec. 17, and twice on Sunday, SKA’s Production cast and crew channeled all their efforts to make this year’s Production one of the most memorable ones ever.

Under the leadership of Terri Wagner, SKA’s “First Lady of SKA Theatre,” Dani Sudwerts, Dance Coordinator, Shana Leben,

Choir Coordinator and Suzy Libin, Art and Costumes Director, over 200 students participated in this year’s Production — Vesamachta Bechagecha, Rejoicing in Your Festivals.

The auditorium was filled with mothers, sisters, aunts grandmothers, teachers, friends, alumnae and eight grade applicants who watched this amazing display of talent.

Months of work and practice went into preparing for Production.

Students stayed after school perfecting their performances,

sometimes individually, but always in the end, coming together as a group. As Wagner observes, “The finale says it all. Everyone is on stage together; there are no individual curtain calls.

SKA student ambassadors offered aspiring high schoolers a glimpse of what some of what SKA has to offer, along with the warmth and energy it projects. Head of School Helen Spirn, Grades 10–11 Principal Raizi Chechik, Associate Grade 9 Principal Elana Flaumenhaft, Associate Grade 12 Principal Deena Kobre and Admission Liaison Lisa Fogel personally greeted each of the girls they had met during the interview process and open house.

After refreshments, the eighth graders heard from ninth grade SKA student panelists who answered questions about the school and discussed their own experiences there. The SKA students described what it’s like to enter a new school, sometimes coming alone from a grade school, and how welcome they were made to feel. Each panelist mentioned how eager everyone was to make new friends and how hard the administration and faculty worked to make them feel comfortable and cared for.

“Don’t think you’re the only one who’s nervous,” one panelist said. “Everyone who comes is open to meeting new people and freshman retreat the first week of school is a great place to start.”

The eighth graders had the opportunity to choose elective classes and student workshops in which they would like to participate, giving them the opportunity to experience the creative classes and programming available at SKA. A gift pack and special SKA cookies given out at the close were a tasty reminder of the day.

YOSS boys bring spirit to HASC

DRS

The Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School for Boys hosted over 140 prospective eighth grade applicants from 15 different elementary schools last Wednesday, providing them with a chance to experience what it’s like to be a DRS student for a day.

Throughout the day, the students — who came from YCQ, HANC, Har Torah, South Shore, Yeshiva Ketana, HAFTR, HALB, Derech HaTorah and other schools — were warmly greeted by administrators and student leaders. Each visiting student received a personal schedule for their day. They had an opportunity to study Gemarah on a high school level in Rabbi Kaminetsky’s shiur, practice creative writing techniques in Mrs. Wellner and Ms. Foster’s English class, solve and prove mind-bending mathematics tricks in a math class with Ms. Flynn and Mr. Weinstein, dissect the inner workings of contemporary p’sak halacha in Rabbi Farber’s shiur, and meet and ask questions of Rabbi Storch and Dr. Kirshenbaum.

Following a Carlos and Gabbys, the students tasted DRS’s extracurricular activities and participated in a multimedia trivia game challenging them in a range of subject areas.

The eighth grade at Yeshiva of South Shore continued its long-standing tradition of visiting HASC, the Hebrew Academy for Special Children, in Brooklyn.

In the spirit of the chag, the boys danced with HASC students and provided special treats for them in honor of Chanukah. The boys made a tremendous Kiddush Hashem on their visit, as they interacted with the HASC talmidim on

their own unique levels.

YOSS’ talmidim eagerly look forward to the trip each year, as it provides all of them with an opportunity to put into action many of the hanhagos that their parents and rebbeim instill in them at home and at school. Rebbeim and administrators joined the trip and played live music for the HASC students to lend an extra sense of excitement to the visit.

By Gabriel Greenbaum, 12th Grade Last Tuesday the Rambam, students and faculty had the extraordinary opportunity to hear an inspirational story from Lior Ofir, a former soldier in the Tzanchanim (Paratrooper Reconnaissance) unit in the IDF. He shared his experience from 2000, when he was a young soldier of 20 years old stationed up north near the border with Lebanon.

They had received intelligence about Hezbollah terrorists who were planning on attacking a nearby Israeli town, and therefore prepared for an operation to take out the terrorists before they were able to carry out their mission. After intense training and preparation, they entered Lebanon in the harsh, freezing winter night.

Lior and his brothers-in-arm were discovered, and quickly dropped into the snow to avoid the gunfire raining down upon them. It was soon after discovered that Lior’s friends, Ethan and Liraz, had been shot and needed immediate assistance. With Liraz on his back, Lior began to flee the scene to avoid further injury to himself or his friend. But before he was able to get away, Lior was shot as well, and collapsed to the floor, no longer able to help himself, let alone Liraz. With the assistance of the medic, Kobi, Lior made it to the hospital and after weeks of treatment, survived, although with significant motor damage. His friends Liraz and Eitan, however, did not make it.

Lior never gave up. After months of therapy and his army career now over, he decided to find another way to contribute to Klal Yisroel.

He now learns Torah at Yeshivat Har Etzion and works in the Bet Aviv hostel for autistic children.

To personally hear this story from a man who started off his story describing his seventeen year old self playing basketball with his friends, just like us at Rambam, is truly inspiring. No matter what he faced, Lior continued to fight for his people, both on and off the battlefield. If we can take one message from his inspiring words, we should always remember that no matter what life throws our way, be it a loss in a hockey game, a bad grade on a test, or a bullet on the battlefield, we must always keep pushing forward.

Bullying is an ongoing issue in schools all across America. Yeshiva of Central Queens has taken steps to address this vital issue head-on by teaching tolerance through a variety of programs.

The programs will include the faculty and students working together to create a safe environment for every student to learn in, as well as teach students how to problem-solve in a healthy way.

Two programs are being given tremendous attention in the yeshiva. One of them, “Mix It Up” teaches members of the school community to embrace respect and inclusiveness, key to ending bullying.

The kickoff for this program was the nationwide “Mix It Up at Lunch Day” where students are asked to leave their comfort zones and connect with other students they may not otherwise interact with.

During the start of the newest program at YCQ, the junior high school had a serious assembly on ways to maintain a culture of respect and tolerance at the school.

Each grade participated in separate sessions on how bullying can be prevented through kindness. The students were asked to sign a contract that they will work on acts of kindness towards others. In a d’var Torah, Rabbi Mark Landsman connected this topic to the parsha and to certain mitzvot.

Program adviser Melissa Maisel then led an interactive presentation and shared with the students that we are in the process of becoming a “No Place for Hate” school sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League. There’s a whole lot going on at Shulamith in Cedarhurst

Highest level of chesed

By Dina Rothman On Thursday, Dec. 22, I was privileged to join some of my eighth grade classmates in Shulamith on a chesed trip. Our first stop was to Bobbie’s Place, a unique chesed clothing store, which gives free clothing to families who are experiencing financial troubles. The owner of the store spoke to us about how the store works and why she opened it. She explained that because Bobbie’s Place looks like any other store, complete with a cash register for check out, the children who benefit from the store generally have no idea that they are being given the clothing for free.

We took the clothing that people donated and divided it up. We also hung up all the winter clothing. It was a great experience and really made me appreciate all that I have.

We then went to the house of Rebbetzin Brog, the daughter of Rabbi Avigdor Miller, zt”l. We sat down in her dining room and she told us about her father, Rabbi Miller, and how he made sure that his children received a Jewish education. She told us that when she was a young child, she and her family moved to Europe to get a Jewish education, and before the Holocaust they returned to America. It was so incredible to be able to speak to such a special person. It was a very memorable trip, and everyone who went gained a lot from the experience.

Torah comes alive for 4th graders Shulamith fourth grade girls visited the Living Torah Museum in Boro Park for a hands-on educational experience. The museum tour began with Torah Animal World, where the girls saw all of the animals listed in the Torah in lifelike form, and were intrigued to learn which seven wild animals are actually kosher. The next stop was the Perek Shira room with all the animals mentioned in Perek Shira on display. Finally, the museum director rought the visitors to a room filled with ancient artifacts from various time periods in the Torah. The girls were mesmerized by the world’s smallest kosher sefer Torah and the oldest menorah. Volunteers were chosen to spin a dreidel from Greek times. This trip brought to life much of what the fourth graders have been learning in limudei kodesh this year.

They danced! They sang!

First grade simcha First graders at celebrate a simcha, receiving their first sid-

durim. Presentations featured Shabbat-themed songs such as “Shalom Aleichem” and “Lecha Dodi.” The girls performed in pairs and impressed everyone with their beautiful singing and exceptional choreography. Joyce Yarmak, principal of the

Lower Division, addressed the audience, speaking about the importance of transmitting our mesorah to the next generation. As each talmidah was called to the stage to receive her siddur, the pride, confidence, and absolute joy of the ba’alot simcha lit up the auditorium! The event ended with coffee and refreshments served in the multi-purpose room, and each girl received a framed photograph, Shulamith lunch bag, and scrumptious cookie.

SIX eighth graders joined 50 survivors in a pre-Chanuka celebration at the Cedarhurst JCC. On their arrival, Rebecca Aaron, Sarah Antonelli, Jenny Lifshitz, Bailey Shapiro, Bryna Stern and Talia Zin helped serve lunch, including sufganiyot for dessert. When the music began, the girls encouraged the seniors to join them on the dance floor, waltzing in pairs, doing the horah, and laughing with their partners. After tea, the girls sang “Oh Chanuka,” “Maoz Tzur,” “Al Hanisim” and “Hatikva,” and almost everyone in the room stood up and joined in.

Special Bat Mitzvah event Sixth graders were joined by their mothers and teachers at a Bat Mitzvah gala which began with an uplifting cantata that celebrated the role of Jewish women.

Mothers and daughters then had the opportunity to participate in three different workshops: they studied Torah together with Morah Chana Schwartz, learned about the mitzvah of challah and braided challot with Morah Shoshana Fischman, and danced joyously with Sima Gefen.

Shulamith thanks morah Chani Pollak and Morah Tali Spector for preparing the girls for their cantata, and morah Chana Schwartz for coordinating every aspect of the event.

The scent of Moshiach The Shulamith gym was filled with the aroma of ketoret as students of grades 3 to 8 made the bracha of Borei Minei Besamim and enjoyed a special presentation by Machon HaMikdash. A Powerpoint featured pesukim from the Torah that mention the spices in the ketoret.

Fire Chief Adiv Koenig and Firefighter Evan Perlzweig, of the Woodmere Volunteer Fire Department, drove into the HALB Lev Chana Early Childhood Center parking lot in their shiny red ladder truck. They visited each class and spoke about basic safety rules. One vital message Adiv reiterated is that the firefighters are our friends, even though they may look scary in their special clothing and equipment, especially the mask.

As Evan pointed out the various pieces of clothing and equipment they wear, Adiv repeatedly asked, “Are firefighters our friends?” “Do we run to them or away from them?” “Do we ever hide from a firefighter?”

He wanted the children to understand and internalize the fact that, in an emergency, the firefighters will protect us.

Evan went around hi-fiving the children, and encouraged them to touch his special clothing and equipment.

HANC High girls retreat to Jersey The HANC High School girls’ retreat took place on Shabbat Parashat Vayishlach at the Radisson Hotel in New Jersey. The theme, “Listen to Your Messages,” was woven through the entire weekend.

Renowned inspirational speaker Charlene Aminoff and her husband Jonathan, a HANC alum, and their family, joined the retreat. She captivated and inspired the students through her personal story on Friday night and at Seudat Shlishit.

Zmirot led by the heads of chorus, student-delivered divrei Torah, workshops conducted by HANC faculty and their spouses, and

the participation of many teachers’ families, all came together to create an uplifting Shabbat atmosphere.

On motzei Shabbat, the girls participated in the HANC’s Got Talent Show in which many of the students displayed their talents on stage, including a performance by the girls’ chorus and individual acts in song and dance. HANC’s morot starred in a hilarious and entertaining skit written by their own MLinda Nathan. The show was emceed by seniors Hannah Tanzer and Yocheved Jacobs. The evening continued with a melave malka and a spirited chagigah accompanied by D.J. Jonathan Zar, culminating in a beautiful kumsitz.

The girls boarded the buses with newfound friends and a renewed appreciation for their school, Shabbat, and their teachers. HANC extends thanks to faculty members Leigh Henoch and Nomi Bensoussan for organizing the event, and gives a shout out to senior retreat heads Hannah Daitch, Keren Dayan and Jennifer Gourdji for making the event a success.

Nutella-filled doughnut, a salve for my pain Judy Joszef who’s in the kitchen

I

n February, on the way to pick up my husband from the station at night, I was rearended by a Jeep. Although I was wearing a seatbelt, my car was sent flying about three car lengths, and my whole body was rattled.

It felt as if my trunk was right behind me in the back seat. Thankfully the young girl who hit me, and I weren’t seriously injured; my car, not so lucky, but it was repairable.

When I got home, I was already a bit achy, and by the next morning, my neck was really bothering me. After a visit to an orthopedic surgeon, I learned that all of the discs in my neck were bulging and I had pinched nerves.

The doctor explained that when your spine is in danger, all the muscles around the area spasm and knot up to protect the spine. That was really cool, I thought, but my muscles apparently hadn’t gotten the word that the danger was now over; they refused to unknot.

I started physical therapy and attended three times a week. I did all the exercises there, then received a massage to my neck and back and heat and stimulation. The therapist would marvel at how hard it was to get the muscles to relax, even a bit. And when they were relaxed, they would knot up a few hours later. When asked to describe the pain, I said that “I feel, as if I want to lift my head off my neck, rearrange all the kinks in my neck, and put my head back on.”

It was decided, after months of therapy, that I might benefit from an epidural injection into my neck. My friend drove, as you can’t drive after the anesthesia. She reassured me, that I would be fine, and that if I

saw a bright light, just don’t follow it. Once I was up, I had no recollections of anything. I felt ok but no relief. few weeks later in the doctor’s office I received trigger point injections straight into the muscles. Unfortunately, that didn’t work, so I was scheduled for a facet block injection in the left side of my neck. I knew the drill by then. I was in the surgical gear (which is oh so attractive) and was asked the usual questions, repeatedly, by three people. When the anesthesiologist confirmed I was receiving ablation (when they burn the endings of the nerve to relieve the pain), I said, “You’re kidding right?” He said “No, that’s what written on your chart.”

I explained I was there for a facet block injection, and that if I woke up with any procedure other than that, it had better be a facelift or body sculpting, otherwise they would have a lawsuit on their hands!

The doctor came by and assured me it was just an error and that everything would be fine.

And it was, there was some relief, but still not much. The doctor scheduled another facet block injection, to the right side.

So two week later, I was back at the office, an old pro already. This time I actually read what I was signing and noticed that it stated the injection was for the left side, not the right.

“Are you kidding me, you have the wrong side of my neck listed,” I said. The receptionist responded that it wasn’t her fault, the surgeon wrote it. “Oh, that makes me feel so better — the surgeon, slated to do the procedure, made the error.” I was assured that it would all be corrected and that it was just a typo. I got the royal treatment after that.

Hopefully I will get some relief from this last injection, as I’m not looking forward to the next step — which is ablation.

For those of you who doubt that I could find a recipe to go with this article, I bring you doughnuts INJECTED with Nutella, just in time for all of you making Chanukah parties this Saturday night.

Nutella Filled Mini Doughnuts

Adapted from Basic Berliner, Glazed, Filled, Sugared & Dipped, by Stephen Collucci. Clarkson Potter, 2013.

INGREDIENTS: 3-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1-1/2 cups buttermilk, room temperature 3 cups bread flour 3/4 cups all purpose flour 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon zest of 1 orange 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 6 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Nutella for filling INSTRUCTIONS: In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, stir together the yeast and milk on low speed for about 3 minutes. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flours, sugar, salt, cinnamon and orange zest, and add it to the milk with yeast. Mix until it is just combined.

Add the egg and vanilla and mix for a few seconds, then add the butter, mixing thoroughly.

Increase the mixer speed to medium and let it mix for 4 to 6 minutes until it become a ball.

The dough will be smooth and tacky.

Take the dough out of the mixing bowl and work it into a ball. Place in a large greased bowl, cover tightly with plastic wrap and let it rise in warm spot until it is nearly triple in size. How long it takes to rise will depend on the environment (I found that it took me about 1 hour, but it may be less or more for you, so plan accordingly!). The dough should still be springy when you press it with your finger. If not, give it more time. And if it collapses then you may have proofed too long.

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and gently roll the dough with a rolling pin to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut the dough using 2-inch rounds.

Heat oil in a deep fryer or skillet to 350 degrees F. Stir together cinnamon and sugar in a bowl and set aside. Drop in the doughnuts, working in batches. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the doughnuts onto a tray lined with paper towels, then drop them while still hot into cinnamon sugar. Poke a hole into the doughnut and continue until all doughnuts are cooked.

Before serving, pipe in a bit of Nutella into the doughnuts using a pastry bag and tip. Serve immediately.

Chanukah lovin’ from Bubbe Beauty’s oven This Chanukah story and recipe is adapted from “My Fat Dad,” a memoir by New York Times wellness blogger and nutritionist Dawn Lerman.

When I lived in Chicago, Jewish holidays were spent either at my Grandma Beauty’s house or my Bubbe Mary’s house, both on Chicago’s north side.

Beauty was all about being healthy, using a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables in all her dishes. Mary was all about recreating the dishes that made her feel closer to Old World traditions she left behind in Romania.

Every year at Chanukah, the whole family was invited to Bubbe Mary’s for a traditional Jewish dinner. What I loved most about holiday gatherings at Bubbe Mary’s house was seeing my first cousins, whom I adored but rarely ever saw — and listening to both grandmothers speak Yiddish. I never knew what they were saying, but something about the sound of the dialect combined with intense hand gestures and the aromas of the Jewish food left a lasting imprint.

Bubbe Mary grew up in Romania and traveled by boat to the United States when she was 13. She traveled with some of her sisters and brothers, but many family members were left behind.

Bubbe Mary used schmaltz to cook everything — from matzo balls to latkes to chicken livers. Everything was fried with schmaltz, which she kept in a glass jar above her stove.

For Chanukah, she often went through a whole jar. She fried and grated so many potatoes for the latkes that her knuckles would bleed. She made sure if you were eating at her home there was plenty of food, and you

would not leave without a full belly and a doggy bag.

The most memorable Chanukah at Bubbe Mary’s was when I was 8, the last one before my family moved to New York, and one of the last times I ever saw her.

When we walked in the door, Bubbe Mary had the menorah in the window ready for all the grandchildren to light. I remember a big wooden dreidel and a few plastic ones so each of the cousins could have their own dreidel to practice spinning before the championship began.

Later that night, I stood between my two grandmothers as Bubbe Mary held the shamash candle in her hand and lit the first of the eight candles, ushering in the first night of Chanukah while reciting a blessing.

I watched the wick burn and the flame grow bright as I listened to the Hebrew blessings.

After we lit the candles, it was time for dinner. There must have been 10 different courses. As Bubbe Mary brought out her fresh challah bread, warm from the oven, she

whispered to my dad to dunk the bread in the matzo ball soup. I remember the look of pure joy on my dad’s face as he dipped and slurped. The next course was potato latkes served with applesauce and sour cream; she made sure my dad and uncle Melvin had two helpings. Just when I thought it was not possible for there to be any more food, Bubbe Mary gleamed, telling us the main course was on its way — cabbage filled with meat and rice, sautéed chicken livers topped with onions, brisket with kasha varnishkes, and roasted tongue with peppers. My dad took my hand and smiled. “If you think this is amazing, wait until you see what is for dessert.”

After a few rounds of dreidel and Chanukah songs, the final spread was ready — homemade chocolates, mandelbrot with golden raisins, fried doughnuts with strawberry jam, and marmalade fruit slices. Showering my dad with food was how Bubbe Mary expressed her love — the more food, the more love.

That Chanukah was full of special memories, as well as insights into my dad’s lifelong battle with overeating and turning to food for comfort. Over the years, Jewish food has always had a special place in my heart, reminding me of those early years at my Bubbe’s house. Only now have I found ways to remake some of her Old World recipes to be healthier — a blend of New and Old World traditions, a blend of Grandmother Beauty and my Bubbe Mary.

THE RECIPE

Sweet Squash Latkes

Traditional latkes are made with pota-

toes, matzo meal and egg, and are heavily fried. My much healthier version uses yellow squash, whole-wheat bread crumbs and olive oil for sautéing.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings Ingredients: 2 medium yellow squash, peeled, seeded and grated 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 small onion, grated 1/3 cup whole-wheat bread crumbs or whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 1/2 to 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Olive oil or coconut oil for frying Directions: 1. In a medium bowl, toss grated squash with 1 teaspoon salt and let stand for 10 minutes. Squeeze squash dry, discarding the liquid, then stir in eggs, onion, bread crumbs, baking powder, Parmesan cheese, and remaining salt and pepper and mix well. (Note: it is important to squeeze as much water as possible out of the squash. You can place the grated squash into a clean dish towel to remove excess liquid.)

2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat.

3. When the pan is hot, drop heaping soup spoons of batter into the pan. You can use a spatula to flatten the latkes. Cook the latkes about 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Transfer carefully to a plate. Serve with plain yogurt or homemade applesauce.

n her opening remarks following UN Security Council Resolution 2334 (which states that Jewish settlements are impeding the peace process in the Middle East, have no legal validity and must stop ), U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power begins with a quote: “The United States will not support the use of any additional land for the purpose of settlements during the transitional period. Indeed, the immediate adoption of a settlement freeze by Israel, more than any other action, could create the confidence needed for wider participation in these talks. Further settlement activity is in no way necessary for the security of Israel and only diminishes the confidence of the Arabs that a final outcome can be freely and fairly negotiated.” (Ronald Reagan 1982) That statement, said Ambassador Power, “underscores the long standing position of the United States that … continued Israeli settlement activity in the territories occupied in 1967… harms the viability of a negotiated two state outcome, and erodes prospects for peace and stability in the region.”

Incredible.

Never mind that the Middle East is going up in flames all around us, that hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been murdered and butchered by Iran, Russia, Syrian President Assad, and so many terrorist groups one loses count. Never mind that Yemen, Libya, Iraq and the Egyptian Sinai see more death and destruction in a week than in all of Israel’s wars combined. It’s the settlements: that’s what is holding up the peace process.

And never mind that Israel actually implemented a settlement freeze for nearly a year when President Obama first demanded it, only to see the Palestinians and Abbas refuse to sit at the table. It’s the settlements: that’s what we need to fix.

And never mind that Israel has repeatedly said it is willing to live side by side with the Arabs. We can and do shop in the same markets (come visit the Gush Etzion shopping center even after nearly 30 years of violent intifada), work on construction sites together, and frequent the same malls (come visit the upscale Jerusalem Mamilla promenade or Malcha malls), while the Palestinian Authority insists a Palestinian state will be judenrein. It’s the settlements: that’s what is “eroding” the peace process.

And never mind that while Jewish children by and large are taught that every human being is created in the image of G-d, and Israeli soldiers are put on trial for possibly firing on a terrorist enemy who may no longer have posed a threat, Palestinian Authority and Gaza (Hamas ruled) children are taught to emulate terrorists and suicide bombers and public squares are named after terrorists who murder innocent women and children. It’s not Arab education, it’s the settlements.

And never mind that countless archeological digs have uncovered an endless treasure trove of Jewish history in Israel, dating back three millennium, with biblical names on ancient seals like the 2,600 year old seal with

the Hebrew letters IMER (Aleph, Mem Reish), a priestly family name mentioned in the bible as serving in the Temple during the first Temple period, found in the rubble remaining from an illegal dig up by the Muslim Wakf on the Temple Mount, while the Arab and Muslim public deny any Jewish historical connection to this land. It’s the settlements.

How do hundreds of thousands of people still believe the Holocaust never happened? And how are there still people who believe that Stalin was a savior to the poor people of the world? How do people look at the same scenario and see completely different realities? How, nearly 25 years and countless terror attacks, missile launches, and suicide (homicide) bombers after Oslo, can some people remain convinced that Oslo could have and still might work, while others view it as the greatest calamity since the Holocaust?

Our purpose is not to take a particular political position, but rather to question how it is that we seem to become so ensconced in the positions we have taken. his week’s portion, Miketz, and its place in the story of Joseph and his brothers, presents us with a fascinating perspective on this question.

Sold by his brothers into slavery some 20 years earlier, Joseph, who has now taken the Egyptian name Tzofnat-Paneach, has, by Divine design, been elevated to viceroy of Egypt,

the second most powerful position in the most powerful empire the world had ever known.

In the midst of a devastating famine the brothers are forced to come to Egypt, standing before no less than the viceroy himself who, unbeknownst to them, is the same Joseph they mercilessly sold into slavery.

Joseph is presented with the chance for a most delicious payback. But revenge does not seem to be on his mind and instead he orchestrates a series of puzzling events until eventually they find themselves opening their packs on the road to discover all the money they were meant to have paid (for the Egyptian Grain they were carrying) still in their possession. Are they being set up? Will they be accused of theft from the Egyptian crown (a crime punishable by death)?

“And each said to his brother, my money has been returned and behold it is in my pack; and their hearts went out and they trembled, one to his brother saying: what is this G-d has done to us?” (Bereishit 42:28) Clearly, the brothers see this as a calamity.

The thought that the mightiest empire on the face of the Earth, the personification of evil that was ancient Egypt, might now be hunting them is clearly cause for concern. And yet, they immediately seem to question no less than G-d himself! “How could Hashem do this to us?” is the question that immediately escapes their lips. Considering that the brothers clearly still have guilt over having sold their brother into slavery years earlier, one would imagine they might consider this to be warranted due to their past behavior, instead of immediately questioning G-d?

The menorah wars: Cheers to Chabad, and L.I. alan Jay geRbeR kosher Bookworm

A

chapter titled “The Menorah Wars” is at the center of a comprehensive history of the Chabad movement in the United States, “The Secret of Chabad: Inside the world’s most successful Jewish movement” (Toby Press, 2015) by Rabbi David Eliezrie.

This chapter details the struggles that followers of the Chabad movement engaged in to win public acceptance for the public display of menorahs during the Chanukah festival.

“Officially the menorah wars were about issues of church and state, but they were a masquerade for much deeper issues,” Rabbi Eliezrie told your columnist. “First it was a conflict over Jewish identity in America. As Charles Silberman, the noted Jewish sociologist describes the attitudes of American Jewry in the postwar era — ‘shah, don’t be so Jewish’.

“Chabad assertiveness, the moving of Jewish holiday celebrations to the public square, shattered that idea. Liberal Jewish groups who

wanted the status quo of a subdued low profile Jewish identity took up the battle, using arguments of church and state as an excuse to exclude religion from the public square.

“Secondly, the Jewish establishment was opposed to Chabad’s emergence as a major player in the American Jewish community. The opposition to the menorah was a reaction to the independence of Chabad on the modern American Jewish communal scene. They did not mind a quiet docile Orthodox community that took care of its domestic needs. However, they did not want a vibrant dynamic Orthodox group that wanted to have a role on the central stage of the community. Opposition to the menorah was an effort to clip the wings of Chabad.”

A

mong the pioneering local efforts on Long Island to give the Chanukah menorah a high public presence were those of Rabbi Zalman Wolowik of Cedarhurst and Rabbi Anchelle Perl of Mineola.

Rabbi Perl informs of “a little unknown fact on the first Chabad public menorah on Long Island.”

“Many years ago, the ball used for the New York City Times Square New Years eve ball drop was designed by a Jewish family, owners of the Artcraft Strauss Sign Company,” Rabbi Perl told your columnist. “We approached them and they built, for gratis, Long Island’s tallest menorah, 18 feet tall, based upon a modern depiction of the Rambam (Maimonides) design. The actual drawings were made by a local artist, Sybil Trigoboff,

of North Bellmore. This menorah stood for many years on Old Country Road in Westbury, thanks to the generosity of Alan Fortunoff.”

“Till 1995 there were no public menorahs anywhere in the Five Towns, when we established the Chabad shul here,” recalls Rabbi Wolowik. “We requested of the then mayor, Andrew Parise, obm, to allow for a publicly displayed menorah. He jumped on the idea and the rest is history. Today we have one on West Broadway and Rockaway, in the Mayor Andrew Parise Cedarhurst Park, in front of the Chabad shul on Maple Avenue, in Hewlwtt on the intersection of West Broadway and Broadway, on Central and Linden in Woodmere — with more to come next year.”

When one considers the situation but a few short years ago and, of the public acceptance of these menorahs, especially of the one in Cedarhurst (which is located just a few feet from the village Christmas tree and crèche) as well as the now long time acceptance of a community eruv, we should all be grateful for the peace that prevails among all religious groups in our area.

In concluding his chapter on this subject, Rabbi David Eliezrie informs us of the following.

he five books of the Torah contain four instances of the Hebrew word chalilah (far be it). It appears twice in Parashat Miketz: “And they [the brothers] said to him [the overseer of Joseph’s house], “Why should my master say such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do a thing like this! … But he [Joseph] said, “Far be it from me to do this! The man in whose possession the goblet was found he shall be my slave, but as for you go up in peace to your father.” (44:7 and 44:17) The other two cases of our term are found in a very well-known verse in Parashat Vayera: “Far be it from You to do a thing such as this, to put to death the righteous with the wicked so that the righteous should be like the wicked. Far be it from You! Will the Judge of the entire earth not perform justice? (18:25)

Rashi, basing himself upon the Midrash, explains chalilah in the following manner: Chalilah Lecha: It is profane (chulin), [unfitting] for You [G-d]. They [the people of the world] will say, “So is His craft [normative behavior] — He drowns everyone, righteous and wicked.” So You did to the Generation of the Flood and to the Generation of the Dispersion. (Commentary on 18:25)

Rashi’s gloss on the words, “Far be it from your servants to do a thing like this!” (44:7) underscore and elaborate upon his earlier observation:

(44:7), contain exactly the same phrase.

In reference to the Almighty (18:25) the text reads, “chalilah lecha may’asot k’davar hazeh” (“far be it from You to do a thing such as this”) whereas, in the course of proclaiming their innocence, Joseph’s brothers cry out, “chalilah l’avadecha may’asot k’davar hazeh” (“far be it from your servants to do a thing like this!”). (44:7) As we can readily see, the only difference between them is the subject of each phrase — in one case, Hashem, and in the other, Joseph’s brothers. As such, even though these pasukim are 22 chapters apart, their sentence structure portrays a powerful conceptual nexus that unites them. hus far we have focused on similarities among our four verses. There is, however, one significant difference that obtains among them. In Parashat Vayera, chalilah is spelled without the letter “yud” (k’tiv chaser), whereas in our parasha, it is written

Chalilah: It is inappropriate for us (chulin), an expression of disgrace. The Targum [Onkelos] renders: chas v’shalom—- may your servants be spared, may the Holy One, blessed be He, spare us from doing this. [May He never allow us to do such a thing!] There are many such expressions in the Talmud: chas v’shalom – G-d forbid.

with a “yud” (k’tiv ma’le). In my estimation, we can explain this variation in the following fashion: In Parashat Vayera, Avraham Avinu beseeches the Master of the Universe to follow the same universal moral law that He demands from mankind. Included in this meta-value system is the concept of reward for the virtuous, and punishment for those who engage in sinful activities. If the Almighty, therefore, were “to put to death the righteous with the wicked so that the righteous should be like the wicked,” He would violate His own moral code and thereby diminish His Divine presence in the world. In short, G-d, so to speak, would commit an act of self-profanation (chilul Hashem).

To forestall such a dire possibility, Avraham Avinu urges G-d to rescue the righteous of Sodom and Gomorrah from the imminent punishment of the wicked. Were He to act otherwise, as Rashi suggests, the nations of the world would declare: “So is His craft [normative behavior] — He drowns everyone, righteous and wicked. So You did to the Generation of the Flood and to the Generation of the Dispersion.” In sum, I believe this analysis is subtly suggested by the k’tiv See G-d, man on page 23

Learning Torah in Hebrew: Nuance in every letter Rabbi david etengoff

O

ne of the fascinating aspects of actual Torah study comes in the subtlety of language. How a specific word (and sometimes even a single letter) is used opens the door to interpretation that is lost when Torah is studied through a translation.

Here is a wonderful example of this. Someone reading a translation of verses 41:15-16 in this week’s parsha, Miketz, would miss the oddity of an additional word which need not be in the text. As Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan translates it

in his “Living Torah”: Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I heard that when you hear a dream, you can explain it.” Joseph answered Pharaoh, “It is not by my own power. But G-d may provide an answer concerning Pharaoh’s fortune.”

Nothing seems amiss or afoul here. And then, Rabbi Kaplan is not famous for a literal translation. His translation is a commentary as well in an attempt to give form and structure to the Torah’s narrative. And so, when we look at the Hebrew, we find something that need not be said. Pharaoh said, “I have heard about you ‘laymor’ (saying) that you will hear a dream and interpret it.” And Yosef answered ‘laymor’ (saying), “Not me. G-d will give the answer for Pharaoh’s peace (of mind).”

The word laymor is used most often in the Torah to describe either that which G-d told Moshe,

or that which Moshe will tell the people based on G-d’s instruction. Here, however, the word laymor is superfluous in both contexts in which it appears. Pharaoh need only say, “I have heard that you hear dreams and interpret them,” and Yosef’s response should simply be, “And Yosef answered, “It’s not me. G-d will provide the answer.” he Talmud tells us in Sanhedrin 56b that the word laymor actually has another meaning. If one looks back to Bereshit 2:16, one finds the verse that describes how G-d commanded the original human — and from this verse the Talmud derives the seven Noachide laws. The verse itself translates to “G-d gave the man a commandment, saying, ‘You may definitely eat from every tree of the garden’,” and from the word in the middle – laymor (saying) — the Talmud implies the

command against immorality and promiscuity.

From the extra word Pharaoh throws at Yosef — and from the same word that Yosef throws back at Pharaoh — an implication can be derived that the accusation that sent Yosef to prison is still hovering over his head.

Pharaoh is therefore hinting at this when he says, “I’ve heard about your laymor (business with the wife of Potiphar) AND that you interpret dreams.” Yosef’s response is, “The laymor (business) is not me! (In other words, it was and remains a false accusation!) AND G-d will provide the answer.”

If we think about Yosef’s ordeal, we may come to think about any person who is sent to prison for a crime they did not commit — especially when the sentence is long and they profess their innocence to the point that no one See Torah on page 23

Continued from page 22 of governors of the American Jewish Committee in New York, Professor Jonathan Sarna was asked if Chabad was causing division in the Jewish community. Sarna responded , ‘Anyone writing the history of American Jewry in the 21st century would have to say that the most remarkable development of Jewish life here was the rise of the Chabad-Lubavitch Movement.

“Lubavitch teaches all of us how to take care of our weak spots. They set up Chabad Houses on campuses for students and tend to the poor and elderly and those on the edge of the community, to those who can’t be reached and must be reached. We must be grateful to Chabad for saving thousands of Jewish souls who would have been lost to the Jewish people forever if not for the late Lubavitcher Rebbe’s efforts.”

A CONCLUDING HISTORY LESSON History is almost always written in the past tense. However, a forward glance is the lesson that we should learn from all of these past experiences. Last week, Dr. Rafael Medoff, one of America’s leading historians on Jewish history, made the following observation concerning the recent vote to abstain at the U.N. on the issue of Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria.

“There are Hebrons in Connecticut, Illinois, and Kentucky. The are Jerichos in Arkansas, Indiana, and Vermont [and on Long Island].

There is an Ephrata and a Tekoa in Washington State. The list goes on and on. The only state that does not have at least one town named after a biblical location is Obama’s home state, Hawaii. Perhaps that fact adds a touch of irony to the outgoing president’s decision to refrain from vetoing the U.N. resolution condemning Israel.” Indeed it does!

In my view, this is reminiscent of the k’tiv ma’le spelling of vayitzer in the verse, “And the L-rd G-d formed (vayitzer) man of dust from the ground, and He breathed into his nostrils the soul of life, and man became a living soul,” wherein vayitzer is spelled with a double yud. (Bereishit 2:7) Our Sages note that the two yudin symbolize man’s dual nature, namely, that we are endowed by our Creator with both a yetzer hatov and a yetzer hara (good and evil inclination, Midrash Bereishit Rabbah Vilna 14:4). I believe this is the rationale underpinning Parashat Miketz’s spelling of chalilah in its complete form, namely, to indicate that Joseph and his brothers are acting in a whole-hearted and righteous manner that channels both the yetzer hatov and the yetzer hara. The k’tiv ma’le spelling of chalilah, therefore, symbolizes the prevailing sense of justice that informs the current interactions between Joseph and his brothers.

Based on this analysis of our pasukim, justice emerges as the ultimate litmus test of moral behavior, whether we are referencing the actions of the Master of the Universe or those of mankind. As such, with Hashem’s help and our fervent desire, may we, as a nation and as individuals, fulfill the stirring words of Sefer Devarim, “Justice, justice shall you pursue.” (16:20) V’chane yihi ratzon.

But let’s recall what Yosef said to the chief wine pourer in last week’s parsha: “When you are freed, mention me to Pharaoh, for I was kidnapped from the land of Ivrim, and here I have done nothing wrong.”

It could very well be that when the wine pourer did tell his boss about Yosef, that he remembered to mention all these things as well. And since Pharaoh had taken Yosef out to interpret dreams, he needed to find out if Yosef’s criminality was a real issue, or if what he had been told in Yosef’s name from his wine pourer had truth to it.

Throwing the subtle hint to Yosef through the word laymor may have been his way of saying to Yosef, “Now that you are here, you have the hearing you’ve always wanted. You’ll get one chance to clear your name. Use it well.”

And Yosef does do well. He catches Pharaoh’s softball, denies all connection to what he was accused of, and moves on to the business at hand. It is not so farfetched to see the behindthe-scenes narrative taking this turn, because anyone who reads the chapter in which Yosef is accused could easily note how when Potiphar gets angry (39:19) it was at his wife, and not at Yosef who he trusted with his whole household. He had to throw Yosef in prison because of course his wife is believed over the word of a mere slave/servant. But the jail was in his own house (see 40:3 when the chief wine pourer and baker were placed in the same prison).

The lesson here is this: Learn Torah in the original Hebrew. It opens the door for so many more questions and for incredible answers, but also opens a pandoras box of interpretation gleaned from the subtle addition of an unnecessary phrase, word, or even letter.

Obama team defends support of U.N. slander Jeff Dunetz politics to go

A

t 2:20 pm on Friday afternoon, the anti-Israel team of Barack Obama and John Kerry directed U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power to abstain rather than veto an anti-Israel resolution in the Security Council. Since the abstention allowed the resolution to pass, their action had the same effect as an anti-Israel U.N. vote.

Not only did the Obama directed action in the anti-Israel U.N. vote give the Palestinians a free pass to continue to avoid negotiations, it locks Israel into the 1948 Armistice line and declares Judea, Samaria and East Jerusalem occupied Palestinian land. As Security Council resolutions create international law, this means that the Jewish State’s presence in East Jerusalem, commonly known as the “Jewish Quarter,” is illegal. This absurd action ignores the fact Jews have been living in the “Jewish Quarter” since the time of King David, except for the period of 1948–1967 when Jordan kicked out the Jews and destroyed many of the Jewish holy sites in the “Jewish Quarter.”

The resolution also asks U.N. member states not to use Israeli products that were created in the disputed territories. New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal were co-sponsors of the draft resolution despite the fact that the original sponsor, Egypt, requested that the vote be delayed indefinitely.

In a cynical move, Power followed her abstention by railing against the U.N. for its antiIsrael bias.

After the vote, I participated in a White House conference call that included Ned Price, spokesperson for the National Security Council; Ben Rhodes, who in a New York Times magazine interview a few months ago claimed he fooled the press to help sell the Iran deal; Robert Malley, who made a career of trashing Israel and whose dad was a close friend of Yasser Arafat; and longtime John Kerry aide Frank Lowenstein, who is now Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations at the State Department.

Price, who did most of the talking, denied the contention of an unnamed Israel source that the Obama administration was “abandoning Israel” and that the U.S. was behind the resolution. He added that no administration has been as supportive of Israel as the Obama administration.

Price asserted that U.S. opposition to settlement building has always had bi-partisan support — but in truth, that’s not the case.

Elliot Abrams, Bush 43’s deputy national security adviser for global democracy strategy, wrote in a June 26, 2009 Wall Street Journal commentary that he negotiated a deal between the U.S. and Israel. In the Abrams deal, the Jewish state agreed not build any housing units outside existing communities (no new settlement communities), and the U.S. would not object to the construction in existing communities. It was only after the Obama administration refused to acknowledge that agreement that an up-tic in housing units began. n August 2009, Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a ten-month “settlement” freeze.

It was approved by the cabinet, implemented on Nov. 25, 2009, and was to run until Sept. 25, 2010. Despite pressure from the United States, the Palestinians refused to join any talks the first

9+ months of the freeze; they did not come to the negotiation table till September 2010, three weeks before the freeze ended. The same administrat sAn Al-Jazeera report on Oct. 11, 2010 revealed that Netanyahu was willing to extend the ten-month settlement freeze he unilaterally implemented, if the Palestinian Authority would recognize Israel as the Jewish state. Netanyahu made a similar offer in May 2011, when he spoke before Congress. Each time, Palestinian President Abbas rejected the offer outright. f settlements were such an important issue to President Obama, why was there no followup? Does President Obama not accept that Israel is a Jewish state (as outlined in the original partition document, UN 181)? And why are settlements such a big issue for this administration anyway? During the Bush 43’s reign there was construction and negotiation at the same time; only after Obama made it an issue did it become a Palestinian negotiation pre-condition.

It seems that the Obama administration has been trying to delegitimize the Jewish state for as long as it’s been in power, ignoring previous U.S.-Israel deals, publicly berating Israel at every opportunity, leaving Israel’s prime minister to sit and stew with the Israeli delegation in a White House conference room for an hour because they wouldn’t capitulate to the president’s demands, and even blaming Israel and American Jews for pushing the U.S. into the Iraq war while he was trying to sell the disastrous Iran deal. Before this president criticized Russia for (in his opinion) trying to skew the American election toward Donald Trump, he sent some of his political advisers to Israel and allowed the State Department to spend money in an attempt to defeat Netan-

yahu in Israel’s most recent election.

With all that in mind, why is anybody surprised by President Obama’s abstention?

Certainly not New York Senator Charles Schumer, who in January will become the Senate minority leader, making him the most powerful Democrat in the federal government.

“It is extremely frustrating, disappointing and confounding that the Administration has failed to veto this resolution,” Schumer said. “Whatever one’s views are on settlements, the U.N. is the wrong forum to settle these issues. The U.N. has been a fervently anti-Israel body since the days of ‘Zionism is racism’ and, unfortunately, that fervor has never diminished. Knowing this, past administrations — both Democrat and Republican — have protected Israel from the vagaries of this biased institution. Unfortunately, this administration has not followed in that path and its actions will move us further from peace in the Middle East.” llowing the U.N. Security Council to slander Israel cannot be easily undone by the Trump administration. The only way to overturn a U.N. Security Council resolution is another U.N. Security Council resolution. Since Russia and China each have a veto, that is very unlikely to happen.

President Obama vetoed a similar Security Council resolution about a year ago. But there is a major difference between the two votes. This vote occurred after the presidential election and almost two years before the mid-term elections.

Obama is cynically counting on the fact that the major Jewish donors to the Democratic Party, as well as the traditional Democratic voting bloc of Jewish voters, will forget this action before the next election. Sadly, he is probably correct.

‘We Are All Hezbollah’: World’s mark of shame Ben Cohen Viewpoint

n July 2006, Israel fought a bitter defensive war against the Lebanese Islamist organization Hezbollah. The hostilities, which saw thousands of rockets fired at Israel by Hezbollah terrorists, as well as the displacement of nearly 500,000 Israelis from their homes, ended one month later with a United Nations-brokered cease-fire.

Hezbollah had been temporarily chastened, but the disarmament demanded by the U.N. Security Council never happened, and the threat posed by Hezbollah has only grown during the intervening decade, most recently demonstrated by the terror organization’s participation in the

atrocities that accompanied the conquest of Aleppo in Syria.

Throughout 2006, the global left adopted Hezbollah as a cause célèbre, embracing the group as the advance guard of what it saw as justified resistance against “Zionist aggression.” In this imagining, Hezbollah was depicted as a Middle Eastern equivalent of the plucky leftists who courageously fought the fascist armies of General Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War — and not as the anti-Semites, homophobes, misogynists and fascists that this collection of stormtroopers truly are.

The principle of solidarity with Hezbollah persists even now; at this year’s “Al Quds Day” demonstration in London, the “We Are All Hezbollah!” signs were again out in full force.

So: Who are “we?”

“We” — Hezbollah, that is — revealed its true nature once more in the combined Russian-Irani-

an-Syrian regime onslaught that led to the fall of Aleppo, and the launching of countless atrocities against the starving, besieged population of that city. Even the normally mealy-mouthed U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called the assault “nothing short of a massacre.” s with Bosnia, as with Rwanda, as with the ethnic cleansing of Iraq’s Christians and Yazidis by Islamic State terrorists, the international community, led by the U.S., has been a pathetic bystander to the carnage in Aleppo. Some of the reports emanating from the city — for example, young girls pleading with their fathers to kill them before they are raped by militias backing Syrian tyrant Bashar al-Assad — will haunt us for years to come.

upon the corpses of Aleppo’s men, women and children — the atrocities have proceeded unabated. Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed Shi’a militias, such as the PMU organization from neighboring Iraq, have been up to their waists in blood.

In one of the most gruesome incidents, a convoy of 20 buses carrying hundreds of evacuees, and accompanied by officials from the Syrian Red Crescent and International Red Cross, managed to persuade Russian occupation forces to allow them through their checkpoint. But then the buses arrived at another checkpoint, this one controlled by Hezbollah.

“The convoy was halted for 15 minutes,” reported Voice of America (VOA), “then tanks and Hezbollah militiamen surrounded the convoy, fired indiscriminately in the air and expelled the accompanying Red Cross and Red Crescent workers. The militiamen forced all the men to get off See Hezbollah on page 25

(Remember, all those years ago, Joseph told the family of his dreams in which the brothers’ bushels are bowing to his, and the moon, sun and stars are bowing before him — and here they are, bowing together before a ruler they ought never to have met.) How is it that when they are brought before Joseph none of them recognize their own brother whose face (being sold into slavery) must still haunt their dreams? And why is this viceroy so interested in their father Yaakov, constantly asking if he is still alive?

To top it all off, when the brothers return to Egypt with Binyamin, and are invited to the viceroy’s home for a feast (ibid. chap. 43), they are inexplicably seated in the precise order of their birth which, while causing the brothers to “wonder� (42: 33), incredibly does not cause any of them to think Joseph might have something to do with it! How on earth else would the viceroy know the order of their birth?

What is really going on here? he Torah (Shemot 23:8) says, in discussing the prohibition against bribery of a judge: “For bribery blinds the eyes of the wise.� The Torah suggests that once bribed, a judge is no longer capable of seeing truthfully.

And this, perhaps, is the brothers’ undoing. A long time ago they made an assumption, that Joseph’s motivations were impure, that he was simply after their birthright, and that perhaps ego and greed were coloring his actions and flavoring his dreams.

To actually recognize that the assumption which forms the core of a person’s entire life journey could be completely mistaken takes an enormous amount of strength and inner resolve, not to mention character. Rare is the individual who is prepared to make such an admission, but this is, perhaps, the level the Torah wants us to aspire to reach.

To see the obvious, the brothers must admit that the dream has come true, and that they are in fact bowing to their own brother, and that would mean they were wrong, and their lives have been based on a completely flawed assumption. And if Joseph is a tzaddik, then they are the villains.

We need look no farther than today’s newspapers to find this lesson all around us.

If Oslo in 1993 was a failure, because we had no real partners, then that would mean all the death and violence since then was the result of that failure and we need to completely change directions, and that is a very hard pill to swallow. And of course this applies equally in our personal day to day lives.

If I am miserable as a lawyer because I chose the field for the wrong reasons then I might need to accept 20 years of mistakes, in order to make life better. And if the fellow or relative I am angry at actually had a point, then I might need to accept that I have been walking a path of behavior based on a completely mistaken assumption.

It is no accident that Miketz always falls on the Shabbat of Chanukah, because this is the essence of what Chanukah was all about. Too many Jews were living lives based on Greek assumptions that from a Jewish perception were completely flawed. The festival of Chanukah is all about lighting the menorah, because the solution to correcting flawed assumptions is to hold them up to the light of impartial analysis, the light of objective truth, which from a Jewish perspective is the ancient and ever beautiful light of Torah.

And as for Samantha Power, the soon to be (good riddance!) former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. (to paraphrase): All that it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to stand by (read: abstain) and say nothing. You should have resigned. Perhaps soon the world will merit to start seeing things a little differently, but it seems we are not there yet.

Hezbollah’s operating codes revolve around punishment and death. Mercy is a quality that they mock. For that reason, Hezbollah is no different to the savages of Islamic State. Both are the Sunni and Shi’a sides of an Islamist coin that wreaks untold suffering

They are a well-armed, well trained force of killers, as we have known for too many years now. The 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut? It was the work of Hezbollah, in an operation backed by their paymasters in Iran. The 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish Center in Buenos Aires? Ditto.

’ve had a funny relationship with the German language. On the one hand, because of our history in WW II, I used to get the heebie-jeebies when I heard German. For example, my first time in Switzerland, when I was peacefully riding the train but then heard the automated announcement about the anschluss (connecting train), I bristled at the word. It creeped me out. I hear anschluss and I hear Nazi annexation. Or, the word schnell.

On that same trip, I casually heard someone remark “schnell,” and my skin crawled.

On the other hand, German resembles Yiddish. And when I think of Yiddish I think of my Bubbie and Zadie, of warmth, love and coziness, of heimishkeit.

So on the one hand I find German recoiling. On the other, it’s familiar and inviting.

While in the airport a few years ago I overheard someone sitting next to me use the word “lebensmittel.” Ah, lebensmittel, I thought to myself. How sweet! It sounded like the perfect endearing word for how I felt about my adorable new niece at the time. lebensmittel. There were a few more thrown in there that sounded just as perfect for terms of endearment, including nachhatligkeit, lebensmittelgesetz.

Well. Apparently my linguistic intuition is not the sharpest. I came home and looked the word up. Basically lebensmittel means

food. Nachhaltigkeit means sustainability. So I guess I hadn’t come up with new foreign and affectionate sounding Yiddishlike terms of endearment after all.

I did find out more about quirky German words, though. Some of those words are so long they make supercalifragilisticexpialidocious look like an abbreviation. We’re talking 77 character long words! his all brings me to my recent discovery of a delicious Austro-Hungarian-German confection that I thought would be

perfect to try on Chanukah. I know, I know. usually stick to the classics for holiday treats. Anyway, what beats deep fried and pillowy sufganiyot or crisp lacey latkes?

Even sufganiyot — I like mine traditional, I don’t need all the fancy shmancy new personalized flavor injections you see in bakeries today.

The most I’ve allowed myself is the delicious crunchy sugared French Moroccan Sfinj, or that other deep fried confection of Sephardic culture that’s similar to Italian

Then I recently heard the word kaiserschmarrn to describe an Austrian food. Before I even knew what it was — like I said earlier, something about those GermanYiddish words just pop out at me — I knew I liked it. (Of course, there was always the chance I would look it up and it would turn out to mean something as banal or unappealing as a laundry list.)

This time, however, I was amply rewarded. Kaiserschmarrn, it turns out, lives up to all that it sounds like it will be. It means “emperor’s mess” or “emperor’s mish-mash.” Let me tell you, it is, indeed, one delicious hot mess!

It’s basically a dish full of fried buttery batter torn into random-sized nuggets, laced with rum and flecked with lemon zest, dusted with either confectionary or cinnamon sugar, served alongside either plum jam, red currant jam or homemade applesauce.

Or, for a contemporary twist, there is drenching it with ribbons of nutella and fresh thick whipping cream.

It’s mouthwatering! And it’s Chanukah!

And it’s fried dough!

So, my dear reader, go forth and make yourself some kaiserschmarrn.

Gemultichkeit! Or is it Gaumenkitzel?

I’ll stick with a language I know: Chanukah sameach and betayavon!

Do Germans wish each other ‘Shanah Tovah’?

By Cnaan Liphshiz, JTA While the rest of the world is busy exchanging Happy New Year wishes, Germans are greeting each other with a peculiar expression: “guten Rutsch,” which means “good slip.”

Some believe the greeting, which is especially unusual in a formal society such as Germany’s, is a lighthearted reference to the country’s ice-glazed streets, possibly born of superstition similarly to how performers wish each other “Break a leg!” before taking the stage.

Unbeknownst to many German speakers, however, numerous etymologists and history enthusiasts trace the greeting back to the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, arguing that guten Rutsch is one of hundreds of influences on Germanic languages by that family’s Semitic maverick, Yiddish.

The case for viewing “Rutsch” as a distortion of “Rosh” relies partially on the fact that guten Rutsch is a relatively new expression, having first been documented circa 1900.

This fits the Yiddish-origins theory because the late 19th century was a period of relative openness and cross fertilization between Jewish and German cultures following the Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, movement. It was also a period of mass immigration to Western and Central Europe by Yiddish speakers fleeing pogroms in czarist Russia.

One of the first linguists to link guten Rutsch to Yiddish was Siegmund Wolf. In his 1956 “Dictionary of Rotwelsch,” a southern dialect of German spoken by traveling merchants with heavy Yiddish influences, including in the word for “eating” (“acheln”), as well as daytime (“jom”) and nighttime (“leile”) — he wrote that “the meaningless greeting” of guten Rutsch originates from the Rosh of Rosh Hashanah.

publicist and rabbi, also traces guten Rutsch to the Jewish holiday, albeit without any reference to the Rotwelsch dialect, in his 1994 book “Yiddish in Berlin Dialect.” Rather than reference a slip, the greeting is “better understood as a good beginning of the year, or Rosh,” he wrote, using the Hebrew word for “head.”

Other contemporary linguists who accepted the Yiddish origins theory of guten Rutsch include Heidi Stern, Leo Rostens, Alfred Klepschs and Petr Subrt, according to an article about this etymological question by the German linguist Christoph Gutknecht published in the Judsiche Algemeine GermanJewish weekly in 2014.

Yet in the article, Gutknecht challenged this guten Rutsch theory, noting that German Yiddish speakers pronounced the Jewish holiday as “Rausch haschono,” a pronuncia-

tion that is further removed from Rutsch and thus does not agree with the Yiddish origins theory.

Ute Limacher-Riebold, another linguist who has studied the Rutsch mystery, noted in a 2013 article about it on her blog that while it “seems to originate from the Hebraic Rosh Hashanah,” Yiddish speakers in Germany refer to the Christian new year as “shone chadoshe,” a phrase meaning “new year” that sounds nothing like Rutsch.

In their dictionary, the German 18th-century storytellers Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm use the word Rutsch to describe a journey, Limacher-Riebold notes. This could mean that the present-day greeting is simply to wish others a pleasant transition, or slide, into the new year.

But even if guten Rutsch didn’t originate from Yiddish, there is little doubt that Ger-

manic languages have seen significant influences from the Jewish lingua franca of Europe prior to the Holocaust. Yiddish now survives on the continent in isolated pockets with haredi Orthodox Jewish populations such as London, Antwerp and Vienna.

In his 2005 Encyclopedia of German Words of Yiddish Provenance, the linguist Hans Peter Althaus compiled a list of 1,100 German-language words of Yiddish origin. His list includes obvious borrows like “schlamassel” and “meschugge” — German words meaning “failure” and “crazy person,” respectively — but also more subtle contributions like “macke,” slang for the “loose screw” (as in crazy), that comes from the Hebrew and Yiddish words for a “hit” or “kink.”

The word “miese,” which means bad weather, comes from “misken” in Yiddish, meaning “poor.” More positive words made it across the linguistic divide, too, including the adjective “betucht,” from the Yiddish word for “safe,” to describe well-off neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, the Yiddish “tov” gave Dutch speakers the somewhat overused word “tof,” an adjective that is sometimes also used as an exclamation meaning “good” or “wonderful.” Indeed, to this day Amsterdam, once a major hub for Jewish learning and culture, is known locally as “mokum,” the Yiddish word for “place.”

Which is why Gutknecht, the linguist who doubts the purported Jewish roots of guten Rutsch, was able to end his skeptical article on this issue in Judische Algemeine with a conciliatory note.

“Please do not be too disappointed,” Gutknecht wrote in reference to the possibility that the holiday greeting isn’t of Jewish origins. “Given the wealth of German words with Jewish origins, you can afford to let go of ‘guten Rutsch.’ I wish you therefore simply a Happy New Year.”

If the U.S. moves the embassy, Ben David cautioned that the event does not need to be blown out of proportion, and that it “should be done gradually, bureaucratically.” The U.S. already runs a consulate in Jerusalem—a large modern facility built to handle many of the functions of an embassy—and as such, the embassy move could take place quickly and relatively quietly. “You can just change the name on the door” from consulate to embassy, Ben David noted.

The move could begin, he said, with American cables to the new ambassador being sent to Jerusalem, Israel, rather than to Tel Aviv.

“Yet, if I were writing American or Israeli policy, I would not make this a major event with pomp and circumstance,” Ben David said.

Abu Toameh, a senior distinguished fellow for the Gatestone Institute think tank, said that “Palestinians on the street will not be affected by any decision to move the embassy, and they are not complaining. Why should Palestinians be concerned if the embassy moves to Jerusalem? It is only Palestinian officials that are making this an issue.”

Falling for Palestinian threats “For years, Palestinians have run to the international community with threats in order to get what they want,” Abu Toameh said. “Palestinians are used to the international community complying with all of their demands.”

In the past, he said, Palestinians have vowed “that if Jews started going up on the Temple Mount, that World War III would erupt. And it didn’t. This is just another threat.”

“The question is whether the Trump administration will succumb to the threat,” Abu Toameh said.

According to Lenny Ben David—the former deputy chief of mission at the Israeli Embassy in Washington., and a former director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s Israel Office—the Palestinians want to keep Jerusalem within “the realm of territorial dispute.”

Moving the embassy, he said, “is something that the Israelis have wanted for years, and is something that the Palestinians have prevented for decades.”

“Much of Palestinian opposition to moving the embassy is the myth that this is a monumental policy change,” Ben David, currently the director of communications for the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs think tank, told JNS.org. “The myth is that moving the embassy will cut off any possibility for American representation to the Palestinians.”

Another sign that the incoming president could be serious about future talks: His naming of a trusted longtime aide, Jason Greenblatt, the chief legal officer for the Trump Organization, as his administration’s special representative for international negotiations.

6. If this resolution is good for the twostate solution, why are Hamas and Islamic Jihad so happy?

Among those cheering the resolution are Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two terrorist groups opposed to a two-state solution (not to mention Israel’s existence).

7. How strong is Jewish opposition to the resolution?

The criticism isn’t just coming from the right. Centrists groups like the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee issued sharp condemnations. The Israel Policy Forum — a staunch advocate of U.S. efforts to secure a two-state solution — came out against the resolution, citing the U.N.’s abysmal record on Israel, the lack of balance in the resolution itself and the effect of galvanizing Israeli opponents of a two-state solution.

Yes, several left-wing groups (including New Israel Fund, J Street, Americans for Peace Now and Ameinu) voiced varying levels of support for the resolution. But prior to the vote, the Union for Reform Judaism — the largest liberal group, and a frequent critic of the Netanyahu government and settlements — declared that it stood “firmly against any U.N. resolution that would dictate the way forward on this complicated issue.”

Continued from page 7 East and Arab fears of Iran have created a new era of behind-the-scenes Israeli-Arab cooperation. One consequence of this new reality, we’ve been told, is that Arab governments are much more worried about ISIS and Iran than they are about the Palestinians.

Yet it was Egypt that first introduced this resolution. And though Egypt eventually withdrew the resolution under pressure from Netanyahu and President-elect Donald Trump, it ended up voting for the measure anyway after four other countries put it up for a vote.

Was Egypt’s introduction of the resolution and subsequent “yes” vote about coordinating with the Obama administration or addressing domestic audiences? If the latter, it suggests that Arab leaders are still feeling internal pressure to make progress on the Palestinian front.

4. What does Putin want?

Trump has made clear his eagerness to come to an understanding with Russian President Vladimir Putin on how to calm the region and defeat ISIS. Obama is on his way out, but Putin isn’t going anywhere, so it’s worth noting that Russia voted for the resolution (and is a seemingly satisfied partner to the Iran nuclear deal). What emphasis, if any, will Putin put on Israeli-Palestinian issues when he and Trump put their heads together about the Middle East?

5. Does Trump want a peace process?

In recent months Trump has consistently stressed a no daylight-style line regarding his future dealings with Israel — a message that some left-wingers and right-wingers alike have interpreted as a willingness to let the two-state solution die and give a green light to Netanyahu to proceed as he sees fit. But Trump also continues to talk about what a great accomplishment it would be if he could

Russian chief rabbi under fire for Austrian meet

By JTA Russian chief rabbi under fire for Austrian meet Rabbis in Vienna condemned Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar for meeting in Moscow with the head of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party.

The meeting came two weeks after the Freedom Party candidate for president lost by a narrow margin in Austria’s presidential election.

A spokesman for the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, which is headed by Lazar, told the Jewish News that the meeting was not a stamp of approval on Strache but rather a “duty.”

“Rabbi Lazar is ready to meet everyone and have dialogue with everyone,” the spokesman told the Jewish News. “He has met during his career with Russian nationalists and seen good results. We believe talks are much better than pogroms.”

Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister of Vienna called the meeting “astonishing, bizarre, worrisome,” and that meeting with the members of the Freedom Party “implies they are kosher.”

“The simple question is why and what for,” he said. “If the intention is to gain any sort of gratefulness or political favoritism from fascists, then it is simply disgusting.”

The Freedom Party was founded in 1956 by a Nazi SS officer. Its past leader, Joerg Haider, called SS veterans “decent people of good character.” The party has relaunched efforts to ban ritual slaughter in the country, The Local Austria reported last week.

Chabad rabbi and family move to South Dakota A Chabad rabbi and his family have moved to South Dakota, giving the state its only fulltime rabbi.

Rabbi Mendel Alperowitz and wife Mussie, along with their children, arrived on Dec. 24 in Sioux Falls, where they will open a Chabad center. The rabbi, who moved from Brooklyn, visited the state twice before deciding to move there.

“People across Sioux Falls and the great state of South Dakota, Jews and non-Jews, were so warm and welcoming that we decided, we want to make this home,” Alperowitz told the local television station KSFY. The number of Jews residing in South Dakota is estimated to be about 400, but Alperowitz estimated it may be as high as 1,000, with many arriving in recent years to work in the state’s growing financial and health care industries, according to Chabad.org.

Though they will be based in Sioux Falls, the couple plan to travel to other Jewish communities in South Dakota and visit Jewish individuals throughout the state, including prisoners. There are two active Reform synagogues in the state, Mt. Zion in Sioux Falls and the Synagogue of the Hills in Rapid City. Neither has a full-time rabbi.

Montana electeds rip local threats to Jews The two U.S. senators from Montana and its governor were among the state’s top elected officials who condemned attacks on the Jewish community there and across the nation.

SSenators Jon Tester, a Democrat, and Steve Daines, a Republican, along with Gov. Steve Bullock, a Democrat, were among those who signed on to an open letter issued Tuesday. Rep. Ryan Zinke and state Attorney General Tim Fox, both Republicans, also signed.

The statement follows two incidents that have shaken the state’s Jewish residents.

An elderly man last week was identified as the person who last month distributed American Nazi Party fliers in residential neighborhoods of Missoula, prompting a local syna-

Last week, the website announced it would hold an armed march against Jews through the town.

“We didn’t think somebody could make off with something that big,” Miryum Mochkin, co-director of the North Beach branch of Chabad, told the Gate. She said Chabad considers it a hate crime.

“At the end of the day, someone that evil, who would target a religious symbol, is a person of darkness,” Mochkin said. “We’re a celebration of light. They’re stuck in a dark place.”

France: Paris summit is not a Dreyfus trial

SANTA MONICA — A Chabad center in Santa Monica was vandalized on the first day of Chanukah.

Feces and rice were smeared on the window of the Living Torah Center on Wilshire Boulevard either late Saturday night or early Sunday, according to media reports. Rabbi Boruch Rabinowitz discovered the defacement when he opened the center at about 8 am on Sunday.

“This seems kind of intentional,” the center’s assistant rabbi, Dovid Tenenbaum, told the Los Angeles Times. “With a religious artifact in the window, we have to assume so.”

JERUSALEM — France has rejected the Israeli defense minister’s comparison of next month’s Middle East peace summit in Paris to the anti-Semitic Dreyfus trial.

French Foreign Ministry officials said Monday that the Jan. 15 meeting was being held to “re-affirm” the international community’s commitment to a two-state solution.

Earlier in the day, Avigdor Liberman told a meeting of his Yisrael Beiteinu party: “It is not a peace conference, but a tribunal against Israel that is intended to harm Israel and its good name. It will not just be a trial against Israel, but a modern Dreyfus trial. Look at how all of France has been voting against us. We know the direction and the goal of the conference. It adds to the atmosphere in France against Jews.”

Liberman then called for Jews to leave France and make aliyah.

The Dreyfus Affair was the anti-Semitic 1894 show trial and conviction of a French Jewish officer, Alfred Dreyfus, on fraudulent espionage charges. Dreyfus was later pardoned and then exonerated.

Israel has dismissed the summit as doomed because it does not involve direct talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

Menorah stolen in Frisco

Polish Jewish groups denied government cash

A 6-foot-high, 100-pound menorah was stolen from San Francisco’s Washington Square Park on Sunday after having been lit the night before. It was installed two weeks ago by the local Chabad.

Police believe the menorah was stolen by metal recyclers and not by someone with antiSemitic intent.

Students at Taiwan school parade dressed as Nazis (Israel Hayom) A high school in Taiwan drew harsh criticism Sunday after photographs of its students in Nazi uniforms surfaced on social media.

According to the Taipei Times, the images were taken at Hsinchu Kuang Fu High School, a private school in Hsinchu City. The students were dressed as Nazi soldiers, standing in formation and marching and waving swastika flags. The students’ history teacher was dressed as Adolf Hitler, while another student is seen riding a cardboard tank and performing a Nazi salute.

The Taiwanese Presidential Office launched an investigation into the incident, calling it “regrettable” and saying it “was extremely disrespectful to the Jewish people who had been victims of the oppression perpetrated during wars, but more importantly, it highlighted ignorance about history.”

First female heredi judge takes oath in Brooklyn (JNS.org) The first haredi female judge in U.S. history, Rachel Freier, was sworn into office during a recent ceremony in New York.

Freier, an attorney and mother of six, was elected to the New York State Civil Court, defeating two opponents in the Sept. 13 primary election. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Brooklyn Borough Hall Dec. 22 and attended by her parents, husband, children, grandchildren and uncle, former Judge David Schmidt, who inducted her into the court.

After U.N. resolution, will another shoe drop?

Opinion by Daniel S. Mariaschin, JTA TEL AVIV — The feeling in this country following the adoption of the anti-settlements resolution in the U.N. Security Council on Friday is more than palpable.

For those who observe Shabbat, there was the knowledge on Friday afternoon that a vote in New York would occur after all had sat down to dinner, with the outcome unknown until early the next evening. For others, Shabbat dinner was served with the TV volume turned up to hear the outcome of the vote.

By Saturday evening, and continuing into the new week, the resolution and its ramifications had become Topic A in cafes, barber shops, supermarkets and offices. The national letdown caused by the American abstention — outrage may be a better word — can be felt everywhere.

Now the conversation is turning to what may come next. There is concern that another shoe will soon drop, possibly a Security Council measure that would outline the parameters of a settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — a development that would fly in the face of the long-supported notion that only face-to-face negotiations can bring about a lasting peace agreement.

Next month, several new countries will be assuming seats on the Security Council, including Bolivia, Italy, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan and Sweden. The council will be chaired for the month of January by Sweden, whose government has made no secret of

its pro-Palestinian bias.

Sweden was the first European country to recognize a Palestinian state and its foreign minister, Margot Wallstrom, has essentially signed on as a cheerleader for the Palestinian Authority. Wallstrom blamed Palestinian “despair” for motivating the terrorists who carried out the Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher killings in Paris in January 2015. Following the spate of stabbings of Israelis in Jerusalem and other cities, she charged Israel with “extrajudicial executions” of those who perpetrated the acts. On her recent visit to Israel, before which she was told she would not be welcome, no major Israeli political figure would meet with her.

How would a vote on a new resolution look?

That’s unclear. Israel in recent years has made important strides in its relationships in Africa. Jerusalem’s ties to Ethiopia are long standing as well. But Addis Ababa is home to the African Union, some of whose members have excellent relations with Israel and some who don’t.

Kazakhstan, the site of a recent visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, also has had ties with Israel going back to the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. So does Italy, which will rotate its council seat with the Netherlands. Both countries are also members of the European Union, which as a member of the Quartet — along with the United States, Russia and the United Nations — has taken upon itself to push for a two-state solu-

tion based on direct negotiations.

What does the Quartet position mean in the wake of the settlements resolution? The United Kingdom and France, both currently EU member states, voted for the settlements resolution, much as they did when the matter last came before the Security Council in 2011.

These European members of the council bear a special responsibility toward Israel and the Jewish people. In three of them — France, Italy and the Netherlands — Nazi collaborators (and in the case of Italy, the state) collectively sent over 200,000 Jews to their deaths during the Holocaust. And the U.K., in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust, prevented thousands of survivors with tattoos on their arms from entering prestate Israel, sending them to internment camps in Cyprus.

With that in mind, and with acts of anti-Semitism becoming a daily occurrence across the continent, will the European members arbitrarily dictate the security borders of the Jewish state, very possibly leaving it indefensible against neighbors and terrorist organizations?

And finally, what of the United States? With very few exceptions, the consensus view in Israel is that allowing the settlements resolution to be adopted will not bring peace, or any accommodation with the Palestinians for that matter, one day closer.

Whatever one may feel about settlements, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel has been re-energized by the resolution’s dif-

ferentiation clause, which calls on countries to distinguish between Israel and the territories. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority is chomping at the bit to take Israel before the International Criminal Court. With Palestinian claims to the Temple Mount now buttressed by the resolution, the P.A. can now proceed to the U.N. Human Rights Council in March waving the settlements resolution in support of that body’s infamous Item 7 basket of anti-Israel resolutions.

All of this is enough to conclude that rather than advancing a settlement, the gulf has now been widened.

Enough damage has been done to the cause of peace by the Obama administration’s enabling the settlements resolution. In the three weeks that remain before a change of U.S. administrations, can we turn instead to the tragedy of Syria, of which Aleppo is the symbol? Or to fighting ISIS? Or to calling out Iranian deception regarding the nuclear agreement, its takeover of Lebanon, half of Iraq and half of Yemen, and its support for Hezbollah and Hamas?

Is it possible, for a just a moment, to stop fixating on an issue that calls not for bias and placing one’s ally in an untenable position, but for a solution that leaves the Jewish state in a more secure condition?

Is it possible?

Obama’s abandonment of Israel is no surprise abraham h. miller

he United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements comes in the wake of two other U.N. resolutions, passed by the UNESCO cultural body in October, that denied the historic and biblical relationship between the Jews and the land of Israel. The U.N. can pass resolutions, but it can neither change history nor alter reality.

For the American Jewish community that voted overwhelmingly not once, but twice for President Barack Obama, America’s abstention and refusal to use its veto power on an anti-Israel measure at the U.N. was a betrayal of historic proportions.

For the Jewish alt-left such as the New Israel

Fund and J Street, which is supported by megadonor George Soros, this was a stellar victory.

They have clung to the myth that the settlements are obstacles to peace. They seem to have forgotten that Israel gave up Gaza in an anticipated exchange of land for peace while actually risking civil war and yielding land for rockets, missiles and underground terror attacks.

Obama’s removal of the Zionist Organization of America from the table of Jewish advisers and replacing it with J Street was a mile marker on his road to perdition.

Indeed, many liberal Jews not only fail to understand the significance of Obama’s abstention at the U.N., but some naively believe it will move forward the peace process. The absurdity of this position is revealed in the expectation that the Palestinians will now feel compelled to negotiate what the U.N. has already given them. According to the U.N., the Jewish section of eastern Jerusalem is now in Arab territory, as is the Western Wall. Indeed, even bustling portions of the eco-

nomically thriving parts of main Jerusalem are probably east of the armistice line, according to some interpretations.

If anything, the Obama administration has further undermined any reasonable expectation that the Arab-Israeli conflict will be resolved through negotiations. No Palestinian negotiator can demand less than the U.N. has already given the Palestinians, and no Israeli can give away Israel’s holiest sites or uproot the hundreds of thousands of settlers who dwell east of an armistice line that was never meant or expected to be a border.

The U.N. resolution’s de facto defining of a Palestinian state on the armistice line — the Auschwitz border, as Abba Eban so accurately called it — will never be accepted by Israel no matter how such “democratic” states as Russia, China and Venezuela vote.

The Arabs have had ample opportunity to accept a state alongside a Jewish state going back to the late 1930s, and they have always said

“no.” The only reason to have a Palestinian state now is to put another Gaza on Israel’s narrow 12-mile border.

Israel will never accept the conditions of suicide Obama has created for it. But rest assured, Israelis will find in this U.N. resolution new motivation to continue to expand Israel into the disputed territories.

In the words of Tzipi Hotovely, Israel’s deputy foreign minister, “History shows there are events which create drastic changes in Israel’s response.

History will remember the U.N. Security Council’s Resolution 2334 as the one which brought about Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria.

No decision will cause Israel to stop building on its own land.”

Far from burnishing Obama’s legacy, this leaves it in flames.

Medical therapeutic clown is Herald’s man of year

Woodmere resident Dr. Neal Goldberg, who grew up in Queens, knew he wanted to be a psychologist by the time he was 11.

What Goldberg, now 47, didn’t know back then was what that career would involve. In 2004 he established a nonprofit organization comprising four programs that practice “medical therapeutic clowning,” which entertains patients of all ages in hospitals, at home and in other venues in the U.S. and abroad.

Goldberg is the Nassau Herald’s Person of the Year, featured on the cover of the edition of the secular newspaper that’s on sale this week at select Five Towns newsstands and in blue streetcorner boxes.

For 12 years, the Lev Leytzan clowns, who are mostly volunteers and range in age from 14 to 21, have visited more than 20,000 children and adults from Long Island to the Middle East, including children in Israel who have suffered trauma brought on by terrorism. (Lev Leytzan is Hebrew for “to the heart of a clown.”) The Lev Leytzan/ElderHearts are a professional group of more seasoned clowns, specially trained to serve clients with Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias and children and adults in hospice care.

Many of the clowns are from Five Towns schools, including the Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School for Boys in Woodmere and Mesivta Ateres Yaakov Yeshiva High School in Lawrence. The group, which numbers about 150, has trained a “gazillion more” through the years, Goldberg said.

The clowns also visit Holocaust survivors, especially in Eastern Europe — an underserved group, according to Goldberg, a New York statelicensed psychologist who is the group’s executive director.

“I was fortunate to know at a young age which career appealed to me,” said Goldberg, whose practice is in Lawrence. “Being fascinated by people’s emotions, thought processes and behavior, psychology was the most obvious profession.” in REviEw A self-described introverted extrovert who enjoys talking to people, Neal and his wife, Leora, have four children — Yonatan, 20, Aida, 19, and twins Elan and Oren, 17. At different times they have helped with Lev Leytzan, but now they are pursuing their own interests, he said.

Goldberg went through a period of reflection after co-writing a book on grief and bereavement, “Saying Goodbye: Dealing with Loss and Mourning,” with social worker Miriam Liebermann. The book was published in 2004.

“I was thinking about these people [who had lost loved ones] and their quality of life, and how to give it meaningful purpose,” said Goldberg, who earned a doctorate from Fordham University and two post-doctoral degrees from the Advanced Institute for Analytic Psychotherapy, which is based in Jamaica, Queens. “I For have a BREAKIN background in music theater, and I decided toG S EW N run with it.”

Goldberg was also a clown for several years, using the stage name Schnookums. Teaming up with the circus troupe Cirque du Soleil and its social action program, he created Compassionate Clown Alley Inc. All of the medical clowns undergo 120 hours of training.

Daniel Rosenthal, 17, now a senior at Davis Renov Stahler, said he loves to make people laugh. That, combined with his memory of feeling lonely in a hospital after surgery when he was in sixth grade, spurred him to join Lev Leytzan in early 2015.

“To have the opportunity to actually lift the spirits of people who need it more than anybody is really an amazing feeling,” the Woodmere resident said. “I love making everybody around

me laugh, so when I was presented with the opportunity to make people laugh, it wasn’t much of a decision.”

Lev Leytzan clowns have had quite an impact on Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre.

The troupe began visiting the facility in 2001, according to Kathleen Fee, its director of volunteers.

Making weekly visits year-round on Sundays, the clowns have entertained roughly a thousand patients, Fee said. “It brings a smile to the patients’ and families’ faces, and many patients look forward to the visit,” she said. “One patient, back a year or so, changed her therapy session to not miss the Sunday visit with the clowns.”

When Rosenthal is at Mercy with his fellow clowns, he makes the most of his training, which, he said, includes being comfortable “doing crazy things in front of a group of strangers.”

“I think some of my favorite moments have been when we were able to make the doctors, nurses and family members laugh,” he added.

Goldberg’s group, which began with a $1.5 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, also helps with the annual Ossie Schonfeld Memorial Toy Fund by distributing toys to children during a yearly weeklong trip to Israel.

In 2015, the Lev Leytzan clowns provided comedy therapy to nearly 8,500 people, who included residents of nursing homes in Israel; Budapest, Hungary; and Bucharest, Romania.

Grants, individual donations and family foundations help support the group.

“We believe that laughter has the power to heal bodies, minds and spirits, Goldberg said.

“We also believe that our compassionate medical clowning is a serious business that takes training and dedication.”
