Elad’s wife, Michal, hid her four children in a room upstairs. As her mother-in-law was about to be attacked, a man who heard the screams ran into the house and shot the knifewielding man dead. By Adam Abrams, JNS The German financial services giant Deutsche Bank has ranked the Israeli shekel as the world’s second-strongest currency, bolstering the broader outlook on the Jewish state’s economy.

“The strength of the shekel reflects the strength of Israel’s current economic position,” Leo Leiderman, a professor of comparative economics at Tel Aviv University and the chief economic adviser for Bank Hapoalim, Israel’s largest bank, told JNS. He said that he expects the shekel “to continue showing relative strength.”

During the past year, the shekel has appreciated 6.1 percent against the currencies of Israel’s main trading partners, including the U.S. dollar, British pound, euro and yen, according to Deutsche Bank’s strategic foreign currency analyst Dr. Gautam Kalani.

Only the Chinese yuan is stronger than the shekel, Deutsche Bank said.

The shekel’s strength results partially from Israel holding one of the largest reserves of foreign currency in the world, serving to reduce the volatility of the Jewish state’s native currency.

Israel’s central bank, the Bank of Israel, announced record-breaking foreign reserve holdings of $111 billion at the end of September. In April, a report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch noted that the Bank of Israel was “defying gravity” by checking the appreciation of the shekel against the U.S. dollar, which hit a three-year low against the Israeli currency this summer.

Imports and exports Leiderman explained that Israel “exhibits a surplus in the current account of the balance of payments—that is, excess of exports of goods and services over imports of these.

Obviously, a strong currency means more challenges for our exporters, and some easing of prices for imported goods and services.”

Yet despite the challenges that the shekel’s strength might pose for local manufacturers and exporters, Israel’s exports actually rose 6 percent—to $50 billion—during the first half of 2017, according to the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute.

Leiderman said the jump in exports was driven by rapid growth in high-tech services and incoming tourism.

“The economy benefits from capital inflows from abroad, especially in the hightech sector. This year, we expect a total of 3.5 million incoming tourists, which is a recordhigh figure in Israel’s history,” he said.

A top economic competitor Besides being recognized for its strong local currency, Israel is also considered home to one of the world’s most competitive, innovative and stable economies.

“When looking at the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, we are towards the top of the list, almost at the head, and this is very important,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in February.

“This creates jobs, raises wages and is good for the citizens of Israel.”

The Jewish state is currently ranked first in the world in research and development (R&D) and venture capital investments as a percentage of gross domestic product, as more than 600 new start-up companies are launched in the country every year. Israel is also home to more than 300 R&D centers belonging to tech giants such as Facebook, Microsoft, Intel, Google, IBM and Apple.

Israel is ranked second on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) innovation index and 16th on its Global Competitiveness Report. Israel moved up eight positions from last year on the WEF competitiveness index, marking the first time that the country was ranked among the list’s top 20 nations.

According to the WEF, Israel this year maintained its position as one of the world’s three most innovative countries, in line with Jewish state’s longstanding reputation as the “start-up nation.”

Israel also cracked the top 10 on the 2017 Bloomberg Innovation Index, which rates the level of innovation in a nation’s economy by measuring its spending on R&D as well as its number of publicly traded high-tech companies.

But the ruling party also has scrapped its plans for asserting greater control over the judiciary and vocally opposes anti-Semitism. It also celebrates rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust.

“The U.S. election is an important factor,” said Pankowski, who noted that the official banner of the Warsaw march — “We Want Gd” — was taken from a Polish poem Trump quoted during his July visit to Poland.

By Cnaan Liphshiz, JTA The sight of far-right activists waving racist banners and shouting anti-Semitic slogans during a nationalist march in the capital of Poland over the weekend shocked many around the world.

It was an understandable reaction to witnessing tens of thousands in Warsaw marching near what used to be the largest Jewish ghetto during the Holocaust amid shouts of “Jews out” and “Remove Jewry from power.”

The march, an annual event that began in 2009 with 500 participants on Poland’s national day, Nov. 11, was not necessarily the largest so far. Similar numbers of marchers showed up last year. But it did showcase the rising strength of Polish nationalists who are feeling emboldened by the conservative government in Warsaw — and to some extent by the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president.

In the aftermath of the march, JTA posed five questions on the situation to some of Poland’s leading experts on the issue.

Do Jews have anything to do with it?

Does Poland have a fascism problem?

Despite their growing visibility, ultranationalist Poles have neither the prominence nor acceptance they seem to enjoy in Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary and Ukraine. Still, their popularity among young people is seen as a worrisome sign, according to Rafal Pankowski, co-founder of the Polish anti-racism group Never Again, who cited a 2013 survey of high school students showing that 44 percent would rather not have Jewish neighbors and more than 60 percent would not want to have a Jewish boyfriend or girlfriend.

“The sociological data shows us that the younger generation is more prone to xenophobia than that of their parents, which is perhaps the most alarming aspect of the phenomenon,” Pankowski said.

Though there were certainly racists at Saturday’s march, there were also “ordinary people, families who just wanted to do a patriotic act, which

to them is just to march with the Polish flag,” said Piotr Kadlcik, the former president of the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland.

And while some shouted offensive slogans about Jews, there were no known anti-Semitic banners on display, nor was there rioting or violence.

Polish Jews are split on whether anti-Semitism has increased under the conservative Law and Justice party, which rose to power in 2015.

President Andrzej Duda in a Twitter post on Monday wrote: “In our country, there is no room, nor is there consent, to xenophobia, to insane nationalism, there is no room in our country to anti-Semitism.”

In Hungary, activists from the ultranationalist Jobbik party, the country’s second largest, rally regularly in the thousands and sometimes terrorize Jews, as well as Roma and gays. In Ukraine,

synagogues and Jewish cemeteries are routinely targeted and activists for the xenophobic Svoboda party call for chasing “Jews out.”

In Latvia, veterans of the Nazi Waffen SS march every year. In Bulgaria, the Lukov March, named for a Nazi ally, also draws thousand of participants. And in Lithuania, nationalist marches often feature swastikas and other fascist symbols.

“Things are bad, but they’re not as bad as many people think, at least not yet,” Kadlcik said of Poland.

Why is far right growing in Poland?

Spared the political instability of war-torn Ukraine and the financial crisis gripping Hungary, Polish voters have not displayed the same penchant for raw nationalism as some of their neighbors. Law and Justice is decidedly right

Anti-Semitism was neither a central theme of the Polish far right, nor was it very prominent at the Warsaw march, observers said. Most of the focus at Saturday’s rally was Muslim immigration, Pankowski said. Among the banners on display was an anti-Muslim caricature drawn by a Danish cartoonist in 2005 carrying the slogan “Mohammed not welcome.”

“Hatred of Jews remains an element of the identity of the far right in Poland even though it has no large Jewish community, and that’s what was on display at the march,” Pankowski said.

What do Polish Jews say?

The issue of anti-Semitism in Poland is a contentious one among its Jews and led to a public row among community leaders in August.

Leslaw Piszewski, president of the Union of Jewish Communities in Poland, and Anna Chipczynska, head of the Warsaw Jewish community, sent a letter to Law and Justice leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski saying that Polish Jews are increasingly fearful due to government inaction in the face of rising anti-Semitism.

But Artur Hofman, who runs the country’s largest Jewish cultural organization, TSKZ, dismissed the letter as “stupid” and, with two Chabad rabbis, met with with Kaczynski.

shut off speech — was anti-Semitic, and not to anti-Semitic speech in and of itself.

“It wouldn’t raise First Amendment problems, it would only be triggered by harassment,” Clement said.

That, Stern replied, was “disingenuous” — a federal statute would naturally inhibit speech.

“When you prioritize a certain definition, it has the weight of having Congress behind it,” he said.

Barry Trachtenberg, a Jewish studies professor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, seemed to accuse proponents of the legislation of bad faith.

“They are part of a persistent campaign to thwart scholarship, debate and activism critical of Israel,” he said.

‘Flat Earth Society’ judging NASA The Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Rabbi Abraham Cooper and the ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt fired shots at Trachtenberg and at Pamela Nadell, the president of the Association for Jewish Studies, saying that academics were not in the trenches. Cooper chided the committee for inviting them.

“It’s like inviting people from the Flat Earth Society to a hearing about NASA,” he said.

Greenblatt suggested they were ensconced in an ivory tower.

Cooper seemed visibly uncomfortable crowded next to Trachtenberg at the witness table, who kept staring at him. Cooper kept emphasizing that the Jewish leadership in its entirety backed the bill, seeming to sideline Stern’s organizational affiliation. At one point Cooper’s insistence that the entire Jewish community backed the bill drew a correction from Democratic New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who produced a letter from J Street U, the liberal Middle Eastern lobby’s campus affiliate, opposing the bill.

Some lawmakers vigorously backed the bill. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., the Jewish lawmaker who wrote the bill with Rep. Pete Roskam, R-Ill., was infuriated by Stern’s claim that the bill would victimize freshmen searching for answers.

“Saying this is an effort to go after Jewish anti-Zionists is the reddest of red herrings,” he said.

Changing definition Others from both parties seemed skeptical of the bill. The committee chairman, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., told the AJC’s Rabbi Andrew Baker, who had said the definition of anti-Semitism changes “over time,” that his reasoning “would counsel against codifying.”

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., the committee’s ranking member, said he favored including anti-Semitism among bigotries addressed by Title VI, but cautioned: “We just also have to be careful not to stifle legitimate and hard-edged and even offensive debate.”

At times, lawmakers also took partisan shots. Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, called for protections of politically conservative Jews on campus, although it was unclear whether he thought the bill would favor or undercut such protections.

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., who is Jewish, described a rise in anti-Semitism he said was spurred by President Donald Trump and his supporters from the “alt-right.” Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., the committee’s deputy chairman, who at that point had assumed the gavel after Goodlatte absented himself, was outraged “that the first president to stand in front of the Western Wall and pray could be called anti-Semitic!”

By Ron Kampeas, JTA WASHINGTON — Jewish leaders and advocates for Israel last week exchanged heated remarks at a congressional hearing on how to define anti-Semitism.

Tuesday’s hearing of the House Judiciary Committee took up a bill that would, among other things, define as anti-Semitism language that “demonizes” Israel.

Of the nine witnesses who addressed the committee, five said the language was necessary to stem anti-Semitism on campuses. Four argued it infringes on freedom of speech.

The witnesses at times directly addressed one another, violating congressional protocol. Exchanging barbs, each side questioned the bona fides of the other in defining antiSemitism. In a bizarre twist, the co-authors of the language that the bill would codify argued opposing viewpoints.

Lawmakers, who also bickered at times, marveled at the Jewish family food fight they were witnessing. “It’s like throwing a ball and having a scrum and seeing who wins,” said Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga. At issue is the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which would codify the State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism. The proposed addition to federal anti-discrimination statutes would apply to Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which addresses institutions, including universities, that receive federal funding. A version has passed in the Senate.

Using ‘classic’ anti-Semitic images The language, in its current State Department formulation, includes a section that defines as anti-Semitism language that “demonizes” Israel. It breaks down the term “demonizes” as “[u]sing the symbols and images associated with classic anti-Semitism to characterize Israel or Israelis, drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis, blaming Israel for all interreligious or political tensions.”

Several Jewish groups have filed Title VI complaints on behalf of Jewish students who said they faced anti-Semitic harassment and discrimination because of their support for Israel, or for anti-Israel language that advocates said echoed “classic” anti-Semitism.

Advocating for the proposed language were top officials of the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Christians United for Israel, as well as Paul Clement, a former U.S. solicitor general.

Opposing were two Jewish studies professors, the director of PEN America — a speech freedom umbrella — and Kenneth Stern, the head of an outfit that combats anti-Semitism.

Stern, who drafted the language in question when he worked for the American Jewish Committee in 2004, opposes codifying the language into law, although he still endorses the language for its intended use — as a means for diplomats to identify anti-Semitism.

Giving space to college freshmen In his testimony Stern, who directs the Justus & Karin Rosenberg Foundation, said the tough standards he would apply to a speech at the United Nations by Iran’s president should not apply to college freshmen.

He said it would be especially cruel to young Jews still testing their boundaries within the community.

“Whether or not you can be an 18-yearold anti-Zionist and within the [Jewish] community is not a debate Congress should decide,” he said.

“The costs of education have been going up rapidly,” Litwack said. “The cost of tuition is pricing some people out of providing their children with a Jewish education. Some families are being forced to rethink vacations, cost of living and, in some cases, how many children they have. It’s affecting people’s way of life.”

“For the long-term sustainability of Jew-

ish life, you need Jewish education. We need to make that as affordable and attainable as possible,” Litwack continued. “There’s an understanding that this is a crisis. But a crisis requires serious investment of time and involvement over the same period.

“For those who want to make a meaningful difference, there’s a lot that they can learn at the program. For those who want to move beyond discussion around dining room tables, this is going to be an excellent forum to do so. Jewish education should be a communal responsibility.”

Upon accepting ZOA’s Dr. Miriam and Sheldon Adelson Award, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said that Israel “must never stand alone” in its fight against a nuclear-armed Iran.

Cotton added that if forced to act, the U.S. can “totally destroy” Iran’s nuclear arsenal, and if the Iranians “choose to rebuild it, we can destroy it again until they get the picture.”

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz emphazied the importance of keeping support for Israel bi-partisan — and in that fight, Dershowitz said he will remain a Democrat.

He concluded that “today the hard left is far more dangerous to Israel’s existence and to the safety of the Jewish community. The right has no infludence today on college campuses,” from which will emerge the future leaders of America.

Oceanside JCC raises Alzheimer’s awareness

A portion of the center’s Alzheimer’s programming is dedicated to equipping caregivers with coping techniques. There are support groups for caregivers, at which, Lebeaux said, “They do a lot of venting, sharing of ideas and resources. … It’s about learning strategies.”

For example, she said, the caretakers often talk about “what to do when your loved one ‘sun-downs.’” In many cases, Alzheimer’s patients’ symptoms start out mild during the day, and suddenly become more pronounced at dusk.

Each case of Alzheimer’s is different, Lebeaux said. Patients in the beginning stages of the disease and their families face different challenges than those in its later stages. Lebeaux said that the JCC wants to provide a wider variety of programs to address these differences, but that the limited funding from donors and the state office for aging poses an obstacle.

Lebeaux said that one of the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease is that “there’s no test like there is for prostate cancer or breast cancer …

Sometimes their peers tell them that they don’t seem like themselves. Sometimes [the patient] just has a vague sense that something feels off.”

While memory problems are often a key indicator, “There are a lot of medical reasons for memory loss,” especially at an older age, she said. “They need to go to their own doctor first” before rushing to make an appointment with a neurologist.

O’Donnell stressed that there is no way to fight the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s disease, and that medication can only help manage a patient’s symptoms. Still, she said, “If we can catch it ahead of time, the meds will be able to have more of an effect.” As the disease progresses, however, the symptoms become more challenging to treat, she said.

“Early intervention is imperative now,” O’Donnell explained. “If you have a loved one that you’re maybe a little bit concerned about … bring ’em in.”

By Zach Gottehrer-Cohen “She thinks you’re her son,” Gloria Lebeaux, director of social work for the Barry and Florence Friedberg Jewish Community Center, told this reporter, nodding toward a participant in the center’s Senior Adult Day Program for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The woman, an octogenarian whose son died recently, stared in our direction.

“Just roll with it,” Lebeaux said, adding later that “therapeutic lying” was an easy way to avoid upsetting those with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and the Friedberg JCC in Oceanside is offering free programs to help caregivers and community members understand the disease, including support groups, caretakers’ stress reduction classes and a course entitled “Dementia 101.” About 5.4 million Americans suffer from the disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Among the speakers seated at the front of the multi-purpose room on Nov. 10 was Lisa Glickman, who leads the program’s music class.

She played patriotic songs in honor of Veterans Day, and distributed lyrics sheets and American flags to the group of about 10 participants, sitting at tables.

Between songs, the participants joked with one another about the quality of their singing voices. They waved their flags and sang along softly to “Gd Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land,” smiling wider and singing louder when the familiar choruses came around.

“Your music memory is one of your last memories to leave you,” Dr. Peg O’Donnell, a senior nurse practitioner at South Nassau Communities Hospital, said, adding that it is a region of the brain linked closely with speech and APRIL communication.

People with Alzheimer’s often find it hard to stay socially engaged, O’Donnell said. “People don’t know how to speak to them. People are nervous about interacting with them. It’s a very isolating disease.”

Lebeaux said that it’s not only isolating for people with the disease, but for their caretakers as well. “The problem with being a caregiver to anyone is that you feel very alone,” she said.

“You feel like you’re the only one in the universe. You’ve lost a lot of your friends. You often can’t leave your house.”

At Federation, Rivlin pushes pluralism

despite their great efforts over decades, have few adherents in Israel. Most of their members do not visit or settle in Israel, nor do they visit the Western Wall in large numbers. And yet their leaders seem prepared to offend the religious sensibilities of their Orthodox brethren, who regularly visit and move to Israel, and who come to the Kotel to pour out their hearts to G-d there. A holy place should not be balkanized, nor wielded as a tool to advance partisan social goals.

And the patchwork of standards for conversion that exist in America has created an Ameican Jewish landscape where those who respect halacha as the ultimate arbiter of personal status cannot know who is in fact Jewish. Creating in Israel a multiplicity of “Jewish peoples,” as is the tragic reality in America, would not foster unity but its opposite.

To our dear Jewish brothers and sisters, we say: Please do not push for changes at the Kotel that will only cause discord and pain to the vast majority of Jews who worship there. And please realize that the conversion standards that have ensured Jewish unity for millennia are the only ones that can preserve it for the future.

Agudath Israel of America on Tuesday issued the following statement in response to Prsident Rivlin’s address to the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly: …It is sadly ironic, although not surprising, that leaders of heterodox movements that have in fact undermined true Jewish unity and continuity by inviting intermarriage and breaking away from the Jewish religious heritage have of late been lecturing others about Jewish unity.

More disappointing still are the unity-cries of the Jewish Federation movement. The historic role of Jewish federations has been to provide support and solace for disadvantaged or endangered Jews and to mobilize the community to come to Israel’s aid when it is threatened. Taking sides in religious controversies anywhere, and certainly in Israel, egregiously breaches the boundaries of that role.

The Jewish Federations of North America, moreover, has traditionally sought to represent all of American Jewry, but here it entirely ignores the feelings of the substantial and growing American Orthodox community.

Shulamith girls travel to mark Kristallnacht MSH

Prospective students participated in a joyful open house at Midreshet Shalhevet, viewing “a school that is warm, nurturing, and inspires individual growth, encouraging girls to pursue any profession they choose while adhering to a Torah framework.”

Shulamith seventh graders visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, lighting candles in memory of those who suffered on that fateful night in 1938.The girls viewed artifacts from throughout Jewish history. Docents asked them questions and many were eager to respond or share stories of their own family history.

The students learned more about what led to the Holocaust and some of the atrocities that occurred, coming away with much knowledge and the message of how important it is to continue to learn and remember so nothing like this ever happens again.

Turkey Stock for Stuffing and Gravy (Meat)

Simple, Pomegranate Cranberry Sauce (Pareve)

2 packages turkey necks, about 4 pounds 2 to 3 turkey wings 1 turkey drumstick or thigh 2 onions, cut into chunks 4 to 6 stalks celery, chopped 3 to 4 carrots, peeled and sliced 1 to 2 parsnips, peeled and sliced 1 leek, white and light green cut into 1-inch pieces Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with foil or use a throwaway half sheet pan. Set aside.

Place the turkey pieces on the prepared baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper and roast in the oven until golden, but not overdone. It is OK if some of the pieces are not completely cooked through.

Fill a large soup pot with water and add the onions, celery, carrots, parsnips, and leeks. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer.

Carefully add the roasted turkey parts.

Use a bit of the water to gently deglaze the foil and carefully pour back into the pot. Let simmer for 3 to 5 hours, partially covered.

Add more water, if needed. Add salt and pepper, but under-season as you will add seasonings in whatever recipe you use the stock for.

Skim off any foam that forms. When done, let cool and then remove turkey parts and vegetables with a slotted spoon. Discard or, if your family is like mine, eat and enjoy!

Pour the stock through a fine mesh sieve into a container and refrigerate.

When congealed, skim of any hardened fat and discard or save for a roux for the gravy. Makes 2 to 3 quarts. May be made 2 to 3 weeks in advance and frozen or 2 to 3 days in advance and refrigerated.

My family loves simple, no-frills cranberry sauce. The pomegranate juice adds a depth of flavor and the vanilla warms the flavor a bit. Use as much or as little sugar as you like.

24 to 36 ounces, fresh cranberries 8 ounces, 100-percent pomegranate or pomegranate cherry juice 2 to 3 cups sugar, more or less to taste 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract Wash and pick over the cranberries and place in a large saucepot. Add the juice, partially cover the pot and bring to a boil over medium heat.

Reduce heat and simmer for about 6 to 10 minutes, or until the berries start to burst and are softened. Add the sugar, mix well and continue at a strong simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring very frequently. Turn off heat and let cool. Transfer to a covered container and refrigerate. Sauce will thicken as it cools. Makes about 1 to 1-1/2 quarts. Make up to 1 week in advance.

I

was always taught to be thankful. My grandmother told me to be thankful for all the toys I had and the Chanukah gelt she gave me. My other grandmother told me to be thankful I didn’t live in her old country so. My dad taught me to be thankful at odd times, such as when I got sent to my room for 10 minutes and he told me to be thankful it wasn’t 20. My mother tried to teach me to be thankful for my younger brother (like THAT was gonna happen!).

In Hebrew school, I was taught to be thankful for each new day and for the sun and the harvests and the Ten Commandments and the entire Torah that G-d chose to give to us instead of to another group. For a few years, I wondered who those other people might have been and if they would have sent their children to Hebrew school!

Anyway, being fairly bright, I got the idea, and so I said my prayers and the Sh’ma each evening and then listed all the things I was thankful for. I’m sure I never mentioned my younger brother — at least not then.

And then I grew up — a bit — and placed the idea of gratitude in a different place in my mind. I was grateful I passed that final in Adolescent Psychology because I kind of never bought the book because it was so expensive. Or I was grateful the editor printed my article in my college newspaper. Or that I got into the course I wanted, or that I got the job, or didn’t get the one I didn’t want but that my parents wanted me to take.

And then I met my husband and had my three beautiful children and, just one year ago this week, my first grandchild, a perfect, beautiful little boy. Being grateful and thankful has a whole new meaning.

Thanksgiving may not be a Jewish holiday, but to me it has meaning that is deeply rooted in my very early days of Hebrew school and my childhood when I was taught to be thankful, a lesson I have always remembered.

Plan ahead with these simple time-saving recipes that can be made in advance and will save you time on the busy day. These store and freeze well.

Citrus Maple Glazed Yams (Pareve)

3 to 4 pounds, garnet yams, peeled, cut into one-inch chunks 1 to 2 oranges, peeled and cut in half and then segments broken apart 1 lemon, peeled, cut into pieces 2 to 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 to 3 tbsp. pareve, trans-fat-free margarine 1/2 to 1 cup pure, dark amber maple syrup OPTIONAL: Toasted chopped hazelnuts, pe-

cans or walnuts; dried cranberries or snipped apricots Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Generously grease two shallow roasting pans or disposable aluminum half sheet pans.

Place the potatoes, orange and lemon segments in a bowl and drizzle with the olive oil.

Toss to coat. Pour into 2 shallow roasting pans, cover tightly and place in the oven. Cook for 25 minutes, remove from the oven and carefully uncover. Divide the maple syrup between the two pans, toss with a spoon to coat evenly and dot with the margarine.

Return to the oven, uncovered. Roast for about 25 to 40 minutes, until tender and browned in places. Remove from the oven and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Sprinkle with chopped toasted nuts. Serve with or without the citrus pieces. Serves 8+. This can be made two weeks in advance and frozen.

Super-Fast Sautéed Brussels Sprouts (Pareve)

1-1/2 to 2 pounds fresh Brussels sprouts, cleaned and ends trimmed 3 tbsp. pareve, trans-fat-free margarine 1 to 2 tsp. minced garlic 1 tsp. sugar 2 tbsp. thick, syrupy, balsamic vinegar Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Process the Brussels sprouts using a thin slicing disc in a food processor. You can do this one day ahead, Cover and refrigerate.

Heat the margarine in a very large skillet and add the garlic. Mix for 10 seconds and add the sliced sprouts. Cook, stirring often, until the sprouts begin to soften, 4 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the pan and mix well.

Cook another 3 to 6 minutes, until the sprouts begin to turn brown in some places.

Season with salt and pepper and pour into a serving platter. Drizzle with the thick balsamic vinegar. Serves 8+. Make 2 days in advance and do not place on a platter. Reheat in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes.

Of spiced lamb and butternut squash burekas

By Shannon Sarna, The Nosher via JTA This dish is (pretty) easy, totally unique and delish. The husband, who is by far my harshest critic, was in love with this recipe and begged for me to make another batch.

Burekas are an easy appetizer to throw together using store-bought puff pastry. If you don’t like ground lamb, substitute ground beef. You can also make a vegetarian version by using tofu or feta cheese with the squash.

You can make burekas ahead, freezing them once they are assembled, but before the egg wash.

Before the holiday or when ready to bake, glaze with egg wash and pop in the oven per directions below. They also reheat well in the oven at a low temperature and can even be served at room temperature.

Ingredients: 2 sheets store-bought puff pastry, left to thaw at room temperature around 30 minutes 1/2 pound ground lamb 2 cups cooked pureed or mashed butternut squash (can also use sweet potato or frozen butternut squash) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small onion 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Pinch red pepper flakes 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg beaten for glaze Sesame seeds, nigella seeds or poppy seeds (optional)

Directions: Heat olive oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Sauté onion until translucent. Add spices to pan and cook until toasted, around 1 minute. Add ground lamb and cook until no longer pink, breaking up into small pieces

with a wooden spoon as you cook. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Combine butternut squash and lamb mixture in a medium bowl.

Preheat oven to 375 F. Roll out each sheet of puff pastry. Cut each sheet into 9 even squares. Using a rolling pin, roll out each square slightly. Scoop 1 heaping tablespoon into the corner of each square. Fold puff pastry over filling, forming a triangle. Using the tines of a fork, crimp the edges. Repeat with second sheet of puff pastry.

Brush each bureka with beaten egg. Top with sesame seeds, nigella seeds or poppy seeds if desired. Bake 18 to 22 minutes, until golden on top.

30,000 frum women trade more than recipes

By Yvette Alt Miller, JTA Getting dinner on the table is a challenge for any busy, modern family. With largerthan-average family sizes and religiously mandated dietary restrictions, mealtimes can be even more complex in Orthodox Jewish homes.

But what if there was a way to trade time and family-tested meals with a like-minded bunch of people? Thus the Facebook page I Don’t Cook But I Give Out Recipes was born in 2007.

It’s the brainchild of two Brooklyn sisters — Goldie Adler Nathan, 35, and Esty Adler Wolbe, 29 — who created a forum to allow kosher cooks from across the globe to trade recipes, swapping information about everything from chicken soup and cholent to Italian desserts and kung pao tofu.

I Don’t Cook But I Give Out Recipes, however, quickly became more than just a recipe swap site. It has evolved into a full-fledged community of mostly Orthodox women who discuss everything from health issues to the division of labor in families. Today, its 30,000 members swap tips on marriage, child rearing, holidays and, of course, cooking.

“It’s a support group,” said Wolbe, a mother of four, of the page’s success. “Friday afternoon, when you’re busy cooking [for Shabbat], you know you’re not alone.”

Kosher cooks, she points out, face burdens above and beyond most home cooks, including meeting dietary restrictions and the high cost of kosher meat. “We’re overcooking, not just on Thanksgiving and Christmas. We overcook once a week on average.”

The size and the commitment of the page’s members is particularly impressive considering that the site began as something as a joke: As a 19-year-old newlywed who lived in a cramped basement apartment,

Wolbe “hated her kitchen,” per Nathan’s description. Instead of cooking for herself and her husband, Yitzy, a loan officer at a car dealership, the couple would go out to eat or visit relatives for meals.

So Nathan created I Don’t Cook but I Give Out Recipes to tease Wolbe, who loved dishing out recipes and advice despite never actually using her kitchen.

“My mother is always saying ‘how can you make fun of your sister like that’?” Nathan said with a chuckle.

At first, the page was simply a forum for family and friends to share recipes or post a photo of a particularly picture-perfect meal.

Soon, though, word spread among members’ extended networks, and more people began using the page to post recipes and talk about

food on a regular basis.

As it happens, Wolbe was just beginning a cooking odyssey of her own. When she had her first baby in 2007, eating out wasn’t so easy anymore.

“It was born out of necessity,” she said of her cooking, “and soon it became love.”

Their family, Wolbe explains, moved to the United States from the Ukraine, where their grandmother was known for her cooking prowess, which she passed on. “I come from a long line of amazing cooks,” she said.

“I grew up in the kitchen.”

Fast forward to 2015, when Wolbe — a full-time foodie by then, with a popular kosher food blog, Cooking with Tantrums, as well as an online cooking show — was shocked to discover the page had 8,000 members. That year, Wolbe became administrator of I Don’t Cook But I Give Out Recipes, switched it to a closed group — vetting new members to make sure they actually exist — insisting on a high level of courtesy from users and keeping it focused on kosher food.

While the focus is on Jewish cooking, its emphasis is the unique needs of religiously observant Jews. “Fake shrimp ideas needed!” read one recent post. Another declared: “Hosting a bunch of teenagers next Shabbos lunch. Need ideas for a menu that will go down well with them.”

“The foodie world has exploded,” said Wolbe, pointing to the proliferation of cooking shows, magazines and blogs, hers included. “Everyone has the ability to be a top chef.” For some Orthodox Jewish women, who typically entertain on a weekly basis, it can be stressful to keep up.

“I remember one post by a mother saying ‘I just had a baby and I don’t know how people do it, I’m so exhausted’,” Wolbe said.

“And within a few minutes, she had three

weeks worth of meals. These [the people who responded] were total strangers.”

Over the years, users have asked for help finding kosher accommodations while traveling or posted pictures from the supermarket inquiring about unfamiliar kosher symbols on packaged foods. Some have also tried to find jobs for members.

One common post on I Don’t Cook But I Give Out Recipes: “Taking challah in an hour, please send names.” That’s a reference to the mitzvah of separating a piece of dough as one makes challah, in remembrance of the portion of dough that used to be given to the Temple priests in Jerusalem during ancient times. It’s one of the key mitzvot with which observant Jewish women traditionally identify. Many women pray for others before taking challah, and the requests for names can generate up to a hundred requests for prayers.

The requests from page members include those for recovery from illness, for children and fertility, for young women to speedily find a marriage match.

“It can take 20 minutes or more” to recite all the names, Wolbe said, “which is a long time when you’re trying to make dinner for your kids.”

Yet week after week, members continue to ask their fellow kosher cooks around the world for the names of loved ones for whom to pray. It’s that community-minded spirit that keeps I Don’t Cook But I Give Out Recipes alive.

“It’s like being friends with a huge bunch of really savvy, smart and experienced cooks who are available 24/6 to help you,” said member Nechama Samuels, 42, who lives in Israel. “In return, we try to chip in and do our part to help others.”

She adds: “All in all it’s a wonderful resource and even — dare I say it? — family.”

The easiest Jewish comfort food of my childhood

By Sonya Sanford, The Nosher via JTA Noodles and cottage cheese was the defining dish of my childhood. I think of it as the Eastern European version of boxed macaroni and cheese — a culinary staple of youth.

Whenever I bring up noodles and cottage cheese in conversation, it always elicits a strong reaction: Either there is an immediate enthusiastic nostalgia associated with it, or instant confusion and/or disgust. I’ve found little neutrality on the subject.

At first, I thought noodles and cottage cheese must have started out as deconstructed kugel. Sources cite that noodle kugel originated in Germany about 800 years ago. The point at which cottage cheese entered the picture remains unclear. In our home we had noodles and cottage cheese, but we never had noodle kugel.

While the origins of the dish are murky, noodles and cottage cheese is still fairly commonly eaten across Eastern Europe in and out of Jewish kitchens from Poland, to Hungary, to Russia. In Yiddish, the dish is called lokshen mit kaese, and you can track down recipes made with homemade lokshen (noodles). That said, recipes are generally scarce and arguably they are not needed, but preparations vary with the addition of fried onions, or sour cream, or butter, or copious amounts of black pepper.

What type of pasta is used? That’s up to the cook. You can make it with bowties, macaroni, penne, fettuccini or whatever you prefer.

It tends to fare best when made with a pasta

shape that has nooks and folds that can grip onto the cottage cheese, and with a cottage cheese that is smaller in curd.

When I was growing up, my mom’s preferred noodles were penne or fusilli, and her preferred technique was to drain the pasta, add it back to the hot pot, add cottage cheese and lastly, tons of grated Parmesan — her not-so-secret ingredient. She would stir everything together until a makeshift cream sauce formed around each noodle. She developed a reputation among my friends for making the best noodles and cottage cheese.

I grew up attending Jewish day school, but for high school I attended a public school that had only a handful of Jewish students. It was there that I uncomfortably learned that not everyone thought noodles and cottage cheese were so great. I’ve always been curious about food that can bring us shame and comfort in equal measure: I’ve often found that foods that we were mocked for eating when we were young are often the source of great pleasure as adults.

Why do so many people think noodles and cottage cheese is so strange? Is it cottage cheese’s inherent bad rap? Is it due to mixing something cold with something hot? Is it the lack of flavor? I needed to make it again, and I needed to make it for someone who had never tried it before. Conveniently, my husband did not grow up eating this dish.

I went to the store and picked up a container

That’s when I realized part of the appeal of noodles and cottage cheese: It grows on you. On its own, it’s not very exciting, but its cumulative effect is satisfying. For me, I took that first bite and instantly felt warmth. It tasted like home.

Unconditional love, from our mothers and from G-d Rabbi binny FReedman the heart of jerusalem

E

li Wiesel describes one of the most painful moments he ever experienced as a push from behind.

Shouting, chaos, dogs barking and attacking, SS guards with guns shouting commands in German which most could not understand. For Jews arriving at Auschwitz, stepping out of the cattle cars onto the platform must have been a hell beyond description, pure chaos and terror.

Eli Wiesel’s mother, having survived the ghetto, must have instantly understood what was happening: the Nazis were herding the hapless Jews towards the far end of the platform, where they were being split into two lines. All the young and strong were headed to the right, the old and sick and weak and the babies were directed to the left. You did not have to be a genius to figure it out, so she pushed barely bar mitzvah age Eli towards his father, to life. otherhood to me always meant selfless devotion, sensitivity, the ability to see greatness long before anyone else was paying attention. A mother never gives up on her children, hence the verse describing our mother Rachel crying over the children of Israel, her children, determinedly beseeching G-d Himself to bring them home until finally He relents.

This week, we read the parsha of Toldot, whose theme seems to be the offspring and accomplishments of Yitzchak our forefather. But a closer look reveals it is really all about Rivka, and motherhood.

“These are the toldot of Yitzchak. … Yitzchak was 40 years old when he took Rivka … as his wife.” (Bereishit 25:19-20)

Whatever Yitzchak achieved in life followed his marriage to Rivka; she was the driving force behind the events of this week’s portion and of Yitzchak’s entire life.

The midrash (Rashi ibid. 25: 22) suggests allegorically that Rivka was confounded by the seemingly contradictory nature of the life she carried in her womb — when she’d pass a house of idolatry, Esau kicked and struggled to get out; when she’d pass a place of righteousness, Yaakov struggled to get out.

Torn by who this baby would become (and apparently not yet understanding she was carrying twins) G-d eventually reveals to Rivka (25:23) that “two nations are in your belly, and two nationalities will separate from your womb … and they will struggle.”

The prophecy is given is given to Rivka who, Ramban suggests, never tells Yitzchak. Very quickly we see that these two boys are indeed very different and that Yitzchak will love Esau, and Rivka will love Yaakov. Yet, at the end of the parsha, the Torah clearly tells us that Rivka is “Rivka, the mother of Yaakov and Esau.” ashi says he does not know what this is meant to teach us, so one should hesitate to offer an explanation, but perhaps the Torah is telling us that Esau was still Rivka’s son, even though the path he chooses causes her great pain. When he takes women from the daughters of the Hittites, she is greatly distressed, suggesting that she still cares deeply for him. So which is it? Does Rivka love Yaakov at the expense of Esau, or is Rivka a mother to both?

In describing the love of Yitzchak and Rivka for their sons there is a marked difference: Yitzchak, says the Torah, loves Esau “because he

is a hunter,” but it does not give a reason why Rivka loves Yaakov — it simply says she loves him.

Some commentaries suggest that Rivka loves Yaakov because it was foretold to her that he was the chosen one. But in that case, shouldn’t the Torah have said so? Instead, it simply says she loves Yaakov.

Perhaps we are witnessing two entirely different forms of relationship: Yitzchak and Esau on the one hand, and Rivka and Yaakov on the other. And perhaps, way back at the beginning of the Jewish journey, Hashem wants us to see that one of these relationships is what Judaism is all about.

Although Yaakov and Esau are the first brothers both born of Jewish parents, something goes wrong. Why is Esau not considered a Jew, even if he ends up as a wicked one? Perhaps there is something about the relationship between Yitzchak and Esau that is so foreign to the goals of Judaism that Esau remains outside the fold.

Yitzchak’s love for Esau is conditional; he loves him for who he wants him to become, rather than seeing and loving him for who he is. And Esau’s love for Yitzchak also seems to be practically informed. Hence he can declare himself to be waiting for his “beloved” father’s death so he can kill Yaakov. Esau is the utilitarian, the hunter for whom nature is there to service his desires. Indeed, paganism is all about conditional relationships. Ancient pagans worshipped their gods based on what they perceived to be receiving — if the Nile stopped overflowing its banks the Egyptians turned to other gods they thought could more successfully supply their needs. Indeed the only time we see Esau relating to Yaakov is when Yaakov has something Esau

wants: a pot of soup. And he gives up his birthright in that moment because it does not seem to hold any immediate practical value. he relationship of Yitzchak and Esau seems to be based on what they can get; but such relationships never last.

Rivka however, does not love Yaakov for what he can do, or even for who he is. She simply loves him; her love is based not on what she can get but on what she can give.

But you cannot give someone what they do not want and Rivka is told way back in the beginning that Esau will not want what she has to give, which is unconditional love. And this is a foundation of what Judaism is all about, and what the world so desperately needs.

G-d does not love us only because of what we do or do not do, He loves us unconditionally for who we are, and that is our greatest mission in this world: to love each other unconditionally. This does not mean accepting any and all actions; it means loving a person even when denouncing their actions, however difficult that may be.

Love after all, is all about giving; in fact the word ahava (love) is related to the word le’havi (to bring). That’s why love which is about giving is so different from lust which is about taking.

And of course that is the essence of motherhood — no matter what a child may do, a mother will never stop loving her child, even if he is Esau.

Knowing we are loved unconditionally is what allows us to believe we should never give up, we can always become better, always make a difference.

Judaism, at its foundation, was built upon the belief that there is always a better world worth building, whether it is the world personified in the person next to me (each person after all, is a world) or the entire world, one person at a time.

Success of Yitzchak’s prayer over Rivkah’s prayer Rabbi avi billet Parsha of the week

wondered what it was like for Yitzchak and Rivkah to bare their souls before the Almighty in their hopes of having a child.

Yitzchak pleaded with G-d opposite his wife (or perhaps, as Rashbam translates, for his wife’s sake) for she was barren. G-d granted his plea, and his wife Rivkah became pregnant.

Perhaps in the repetition of the word “ishto” there’s a subtle hint of a generational difference.

While Avraham was eventually agreeable to the idea that he could have a child from another woman, this was not an option for Yitzchak. He wanted the child to come from his wife Rivkah.

The midrash explains that his prayer was more worthy than hers because he was a tsaddik ben tsaddik, the righteous product of righteous parents. Does this mean her prayer was worthless? How could it be that the prayer of someone who has unrighteous parents is worthless?

The midrash Sechel Tov suggests that her barrenness was a response to the blessing of her family when she left, those who told her to be a mother of a multitude of descendants — the fact that she is childless for 20 years demonstrates that their blessing was worthless. Her children were born on account of her husband’s prayer.

That’s no justification for her personal suffering! 20 years of infertility, just so her brother wouldn’t get the credit of his blessing coming true? Troubling! here is an interesting theory in the rabbinosphere about why the Foremothers were all barren until prayer or a blessing opened their wombs.

The Talmud (Yebamot 64) says simply that G-d wanted their “prayers of the righteous.”

Rabbenu Bechaya notes from here that the prayers of the righteous have the power to change nature. And the proof is from the specific word the Torah uses, “va’ye’etar,” whose root references a farming tool which overturns grain. This prayer was to overturn G-d’s decree. (Paroh uses the same language to Moshe four times, perhaps for obvious reasons.) He then gives specific reasons for the barrenness of each of the mothers.

Sarah was barren so that Yishmael would be born. She was barren to open the door for her name to change. Sarai was barren but Sarah was not.

Rivkah was barren for 20 years so that Eisav would not have the chance to rebel in Avraham’s lifetime. For Avraham to “come to his fathers in peace,” Eisav’s birth needed to be delayed 20 years.

Rachel was barren so that Bilhah and Zilpah would be put into a position from which they could produce Dan, Naftali, Gad, Asher.

Which leaves us to answer the question of how the prayers of a righteous child of righteous parents has more merit than a righteous child of wicked parents?

The Slonimer Rebbe says, you’re looking at it wrong, it doesn’t mean what you think it means.

Prayer — tefillah and kavvanah — requires one to demonstrate the quality of being extremely humble, especially before the Almighty. Someone who comes from an unclean background has a very easy time humbling oneself. “G-d. I know I’ve done bad things in my life. I know I come from parents who were sinful. So I am undeserving. But, here I am.”

It’s pretty easy to be a realist in that kind of situation. But a tzaddik ben tzaddik? “G-d. I’m a good person. My parents were good people. So I’m not really sure why I’m having this difficult time in my life. Here I am.” t is much harder for such a person to humble oneself and say, “I am nothing. My background is worth nothing. Everything I’ve done in my life is meaningless before you. So here I am, asking for something I don’t deserve to get.”

I

knew he was going to have a child — it was promised to him by G-d through the blessing to Avraham. Since he knew he was not the problem, as Chizkuni notes, he didn’t need to pray for himself — so he prayed for her. And of course Rivkah also wanted a child. But many who describe her prayer explain it as her saying she only wants a child with HIM — so she prayed for her husband to be the father of her children.

Prayer is sometimes selfish. But more often it’s selfless. I’m praying for the other person. I’m looking out for my family, my friends. And I am humbling myself so that G-d can see that I am sincere.

Davening is only meaningful if it is a serious endeavor. And as we learn from the Slonimer Rebbe, the more one humbles oneself, the more powerful the davening is.

This is our challenge when we come to shul.

To daven like Yitzchak and Rivkah. To have our priorities clear and correct. Those of us who have a spouse should pray for our spouse. Those of us who have children, should pray for our children.

Those who have grandchildren or greatgrandchildren, should be very busy in the synagogue — praying for each and every one of them.

And those of us who have no family have a community. Pray for our community, locally and globally. Pray for the people of Israel, that we should experience peace and prosperity and the continued opportunity to enjoy life with family, friends, communities and, most humbly, with our G-d.

alan Jay geRbeR Kosher BooKworm This week I am presenting a guest writer, Rabbi Jeremy Rosen, whose essay, “Italian Talmud,” excerpted below, introduces us to an interesting chapter in the long history of the Talmud.

Rabbi Rosen is the spiritual leader of the Persian Jewish Center in Manhattan. For many years he was the headmaster and principal of England’s Carmel College.

His father was the famed Rabbi Kopul Rosen, of blessed memory. His articles can be found at jeremyrosen.com he Talmud is a massive encyclopedia of Jewish law and lore that took almost 500 years to complete. It has 63 tractates and is usually published nowadays in 19 volumes. They include not just the Talmud itself, but a huge collection of super commentaries on the text which, in modern editions, extend to our times. Since Jews were barred from universities and academies for much of the past, the Talmud became the focus of Jewish intellectual activity, energy, and creativity. The core of Jewish scholarship.

The Talmud was translated into German in the nineteenth century and into English with the Soncino edition of the text under Rabbi Isidore Epstein between 1936 and 1945. In 1965 Rabbi Dr. Zvi Ehrman began editing a Talmud El Am, a popular Hebrew translation, and then an English version. Rav Adin Steinsaltz began translating the Talmud into Modern Hebrew with his own commentary and explanation in 1989, which was then produced in English, French, Russian, and Spanish. The most popular modern translation into English is by Artscroll/Mesorah which added a valuable, if selective, traditional commentary and was completed in 2004.

Translations are helpful because the Talmud

contains archaic words both Hebrew and Aramaic, as well as references to Greek. But studying the Talmud, as opposed to just reading it, is a very different and complex process. It is an intellectual discipline that has contributed the intellectual sharpness of Rabbi Jeremy Rosen its students. The popular Daf Yomi, reading a Daf a day, is really just a gimmick (albeit a beneficial one), because many pages of the Talmud are so complex and ambiguous that it can take days to work out the meaning and to master the flow of logic and conflicting opinions. In the yeshivas where I studied, a Daf could take a week or more. So a Daf-a-day is more a useful discipline, an act of commitment, than a serious academic process. ll this brings me to an event I attended last week to celebrate the Italian translation of the Babylonian Talmud. Behind the project is a remarkable woman, Professor Clelia Piperno, of proud Italian stock, ably supported by the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni. Professor Piperno was the driving force who had the contacts and knew how to raise funds through Italian and European cultural agencies for what turned into a massive project.

To everyone’s surprise, the first volume sold over 10,000 copies in Italy. Italian Jewry is relatively small; there are some 24,000 Jews in Italy nowadays. Hardly any of the original Italian Jewry that descended from exiles from Israel to Rome still exist. Italian Jewry always stood independent of both Ashkenazi and Sephardi streams and customs. Most Italian Jews now are postwar arrivals. Not many are Jewish scholars.

Those interested in studying the Talmud in Italian, even fewer. Even if there are probably twice as many Italian-speaking Jews in Israel, this translation could have been seen, initially,

only as a token or a vanity project—but for one factor that emerged when the representative of the technical company that turned this project into a digital miracle, took the floor.

He told us that this translation of the Talmud was the work of the Institute of Computational Linguistics of the National Research Council of Italy.

Some mouthful. The project was named “Traduco” (literally “I translate”). The system “indexes information on its own and allows for a uniform translation of text, notes, and comments. And it provides alternate translation suggestions automatically.” mpressive. But what really struck me was the presenter saying that this software would enable the Talmud to be translated into any other language. In other words, this goes beyond any work of translation of the Talmud that has ever been done. It is a remarkable tool, a product of modern technology unlike anything we have witnessed in Judaica. And the brainchild of an Italian community that once was the proudest in all Jewry yet is now one of the smallest. Who knows that the biggest academies in Jewish life a thousand years ago were in the heel of Italy?

But inspiration comes from many sources. There is something significant, even miraculous, in that

this achievement is the product of Italian Jewry.

Lesson one is that one should never write off any Jewish community. Lesson two is that a country rooted in culture that spans sectarian and nationalist boundaries is fertile ground for innovation and creativity. And thirdly, that this is one of the most significant developments in Judaism’s contribution to world culture.

My connection to Italy and the Italian language is tenuous, but I have always loved Italian culture, its richness, variety and “joie de vivre,” even if it is one of the most corrupt, dysfunctional countries in Europe. Now that I live in the USA, which is in many ways even more dysfunctional, I realize that functionalism is not nearly as crucial as inspiration of which Italy and the U.S. have plenty. This project is a little miracle.

Those who study the Talmud closed off in their confined academies certainly contribute significantly to Jewish life in one way. But those who can take it out into the world at large are contributing to humanity in general, enabling the Talmud to be translated into any language.

This is really something special. Kol Hakavod, Respect, and may the project go from strength to strength.

ereishit contains many celebrated phrases that have shaped our people’s destiny for all time. One of them occurs in this week’s parasha: “And Isaac said to Jacob, ‘Please come closer, so that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.’ So Jacob drew near to Isaac his father, and he felt him, and he said, ‘The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.’ And he did not recognize him because his hands were hairy like the hands of his brother Esau, and he blessed him.” (27:21-23) Rashi, following Midrash Tanchuma Buber, explains “the voice is the voice of Jacob” as connoting “the voice of Jacob who speaks entreatingly [with respect and dignity]: ‘Please rise;’ but Esau spoke harshly: ‘Let my father arise’.”

In addition, the Torah teaches that Isaac proclaimed “the hands are the hands of Esau” in a literal sense, since Isaac had minimal body hair, whereas Esau was particularly hirsute. Jacob, therefore, was able to present himself to his blind father as his brother, Esau, based upon the successful subterfuge contrived by his mother, Rebecca: “And the hides of the kid-goats she put on his hands and on the smoothness of his neck.” (27:16) Why did Rebecca utilize this stratagem? The Torah provides us with the answer: “And Rebecca said to Jacob her son, saying,

‘Behold I have heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying, “Bring me game and make me tasty foods, and I will eat, and I will bless you before the L-rd before my death.” And now my son, hearken to my voice (sh’ma b’koli), to what I am commanding you. Go now to the flock, and take for me from there two choice kids, and I will make them tasty foods for your father, as he likes. And you shall bring [them] to your father that he may eat, in order that he bless you before his death’.”

(Bereishit 27:6-10) In sum, Rebecca guided Jacob in the usurpation of the blessing that Isaac was poised to bestow upon Esau, since she was gifted with prophetic insight (ruach hakodesh) and thereby knew that the continuity of Abraham’s spiritual and ethical legacy could only be guaranteed through Jacob. idrash Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer takes a different approach in its explication of the phrase, “the voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”

It suggests that “the voice is the voice of Jacob” refers to a profound grasp of the logical underpinnings of the Torah (b’hegyon Torah), whereas, “the hands are the hands of Esau” is applicable “in every instance of murder and all manner of innocent deaths.” (Literally, “mavet ra,” chapter 32) It continues its analysis of our pasuk by suggesting: “Moreover, when it is declared in the Heav-

ens that ‘the voice is the voice of Jacob,’ they [the Ministering Angels] bestir themselves in a riotous cacophony of sounds [of joy.] And when ‘the voice is the voice of Jacob’ is proclaimed on earth, all who hear and comprehend [its singular meaning] are inextricably joined [to the ultimate depth] of the phrase. [Unfortunately, however,] all those who do not hear and comprehend these words [when they are spoken] are counted among those whose ‘hands are the hands of Esau’.”

Prior to encountering this exposition of our verse, we would have thought that Isaac’s statement, “the voice is the voice of Jacob,” was said but once in history, namely, immediately prior to the bestowal of the blessing that had been designated for Esau. The midrash informs us, however, that our phrase continues to be declared both in the Heavens and on earth. By extension, whoever on earth joins the Ministering Angels in their jubilant acceptance of the Torah will be zocheh (merit) to be connected to its holiness forevermore, so that they, too, will have the voice of Torah in their hearts, minds and souls.

Midrash Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer’s interpretation of our pasuk is reminiscent of words that we recite at a Hadran (conclusion of a Talmudic tractate): “We express gratitude before You, Hashem, that You established our portion with those who dwell in the study hall, and have not

established our portion with idlers. For we rise early and they rise early; we arise early for the words of Torah, while they arise early for idle words. We toil and they toil; we toil and receive reward, while they toil and do not receive reward. We run and they run; we run to the life of the World to Come. (Modim section of the Hadran) With Hashem’s kind help, may we ever be connected to His holy Torah, for its words are “our life and the length of our days, and about them we will meditate day and night” (from the Maariv service). Prince Charles says and does the darndest things Jeff Dunetz politics to go

he British Daily Mail last week published a 1986 letter from Prince Charles to an American friend in which the heir to the British throne urged the U.S. to “take on the Jewish lobby” and blamed “the influx of foreign Jews” for causing unrest in the Middle East.

The prince wrote the letter while he was enroute home from an official trip to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar with his then wife Princess Diana. The letter (which was not “leaked” but was found in a public archive) says in part: “Tried to read bit of Koran on way out and it gave me some insight into way they [Arabs] think and operate. Don’t think they could understand us through reading Bible though!”

“Also I now begin to understand better their [Arabs’] point of view about Israel. Never realized they see it as a U.S. colony.”

all a Semitic people originally and it is the influx of foreign, European Jews (especially from Poland, they say) which has helped to cause great problems. I know there are so many complex issues, but how can there ever be an end to terrorism unless the causes are eliminated?”

“Surely some U.S. president has to have the

courage to stand up and take on the Jewish lobby in U.S.? I must be naive, I suppose!”

While there are groups that lobby for Israel (such as AIPAC) they are not “Jewish” in nature, rather their membership runs across religions and party lines. Generally, the phrases “Jewish lobby” or “Israel Lobby” are used without mentioning other “lobbies” or mentioning that Jews do not have a homogeneous position on anything; thus, “Jewish lobby” is a term which promotes a classic anti-Semitic canard that the Jews control the U.S. government.

The truth is the “pro-Israel lobby” does not wield any more influence than others. For example, they were not able to stop the U.S. from dealing with the PLO, with President Carter calling for a Palestinian State in 1976, just nine years after the Six Day War. Now compare that to the “Cuban lobby” which was able to prevent the U.S. from dealing with Castro-run Cuba for 56 years.

A spokeswoman for Prince Charles said the letter did not contain his views but he was simply relaying arguments he heard on his trip.

“He was sharing the arguments in private correspondence with a long-standing friend in an attempt to improve his understanding of what he

has always recognized is a deeply complex issue to which he was coming early on in his own analysis in 1986,” the spokeswoman said. The spokesman added that Charles has a “proven track record” of support for both Jewish and Arab communities.

Indeed, the Daily Mail report has a “some of his best friends are Jewish” section.

“While the letter is inflammatory, there is no suggestion Charles holds anti-Semitic views. He has many prominent Jewish friends and in 2013 became the first Royal to attend a chief rabbi’s inauguration ceremony. In a speech that year, he expressed concern at the apparent rise of anti-Semitism in Britain.” his is not the first report of Prince Charles’ sour attitude toward the Jewish State. The Daily Mail’s report added that in 2003, “it was reported the prince had not been to the US for the previous six years on Foreign Office advice, largely because of his criticism of U.S. policy in the Middle East.”

“A diplomatic source said at the time the prince had ‘in American terms and international terms, fairly dodgy views on Israel. He thinks American policy in the Middle East is complete madness’.”

Hopes betrayed: Russian Revolution and the Jews Ben Cohen Viewpoint

A

nother week, another centennial. Following the Balfour Declaration’s milestone, it’s now time to look back on the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, where a communist insurrection in St. Petersburg, then known as Petrograd, gave birth to a state that caused untold misery to millions for almost the remainder of the 20th century.

Led by Vladimir Lenin, the Bolsheviks—the “majority” faction of the Russian communists— were a tight-knit, fiercely revolutionary group.

Its core members had shared the experience of exile in grand cities like London, Zurich, New York and Paris, as well as the brutalities and loneliness of imprisonment or deportation by the Tsarist authorities. Their organizing principle of “democratic centralism” left little room for any dissent, as Lenin’s literary eviscerations of his opponents attest.

Had it all remained polemical, history would have been different. In its Russian setting, though, Bolshevik rule meant famine, death and

an ever-intrusive police state. To begin with, Russia was hardly a natural candidate for a Marxist revolution, given its lack of industry, and its large mass of semi-literate peasants steeped in premodern superstitions—particularly about Jews.

And Jews were a big presence in the Bolshevik Party; about one-third of its leadership, in fact. But these leaders did not act for Jewish communal interests, nor did they consider themselves particularly Jewish. It is true that Lenin’s nationalities policy enabled Jewish equality and a flowering of Yiddish newspapers, theater and literature, but it is equally true that he opposed any form of Jewish political selfdetermination, denouncing with equal fervor the separatism of the Zionist movement, which included Marxist factions like Poale Zion, and that of the anti-Zionist, Jewish socialist Bund.

Thus Jewish hopes were betrayed. s the revolution consolidated, the Jewish section of the Bolshevik Party, known as the “Yevsektsiya,” enthusiastically purged Jewish dissenters, clamped down on the Jewish religion and banned the teaching of Hebrew at a time when there were 300,000 registered Zionists among Russia’s Jews. In tandem, the party itself was undergoing dramatic change, expanding its membership to the point where some of the Jewish Bolsheviks began feeling

rather like the Jewish Christians in the time of St. Paul—uncertain about where the revolution they had played such a decisive role in launching would take them.

As the late historian Robert Wistrich observed in his fine study of Leon Trotsky, the Red Army’s Jewish commander viewed the growth of the revolution’s bureaucracy as “the revenge of Russian backwardness on a revolution that

had been isolated from the more advanced capitalist countries in Europe.” Continued Wistrich, “The bureaucratization of the Soviet state was rendered almost inevitable by such factors as crushing material want, cultural backwardness and the inherited burdens of the Russian past.”

Commentary by Steve Feldman, Lee Bender and Kevin Ross e were heartened to learn that a Philadelphia synagogue is offering an adult education course about anti-Semitism, a timeless scourge that every generation must combat. But why is the course seemingly prompted, as its website suggests, solely by Christian sources of Jew-hatred and August’s despicable anti-Jewish events in Charlottesville—rather than July’s equally despicable calls in two California mosques for Jews to be slaughtered, or even the continuous despicable Jew-hatred from Nation of Islam leaders?

Are Jew-hatred and threats from some Muslims in America less vile, less threatening and less problematic than the same actions from white supremacists?

To some in the Jewish community: yes, apparently.

In a brief description of the course on the Society Hill Synagogue’s website, these are among the questions posed: “What is the role of Christianity and the Church in antiSemitism? How has anti-Semitism morphed over the centuries? In the shadow of Charlottesville we must ask, to what extent does anti-Semitism threaten the Jewish people in this country? Is it confined to isolated, albeit frightening and horrific, incidents? Is it a larger threat?”

While acts of anti-Semitism have been and continue to be perpetrated by some Christians, there seems to be a tendency by many Jews to brush aside, downplay or even ignore Jewhatred from some Muslims motivated by aggressive mosques or interpretations of Islam.

The white supremacist rally in Charlottesville received tremendous media coverage, with video footage of torch-bearing neo-Nazis chanting “Jews will not replace us” and reports of armed goons menacing synagogue congregants. It was an example of the worst that America has to offer. But nobody who monitors Jew-hatred in America suspected that Klansmen and their ilk had moderated or disappeared.

Equally virulent Jew-hatred from some segments of Islam is under-reported and seldom condemned. Could it be that pre-emptive accusations of “Islamophobia” have put a chill on addressing Jew-hatred from that group? Or is there a misguided belief that Jew-hatred is exclusive to Christians? ome examples from this year: •“The Prophet Muhammad says that the time will come, the Last Hour will not take place until the Muslims fight the Jews. We don’t say if it is in Palestine or another place,” said Sheikh Ammar Shahin from the pulpit of the Islamic Center of Davis, Calif., in July, ac-cording to a video obtained by the Middle East Media and Research Institute (MEMRI). A translation from MEMRI states that Shahin prayed, “Oh Allah, liberate the Al-Aqsa mosque from the filth of the Jews.

day that You inflict upon them, and the wonders of Your ability. Oh Allah, count them one by one and annihilate them down to the very last one. Do not spare any of them.”

• hat same day at the Islamic Center of Riverside, Calif., according to MEMRI, Sheikh Mahmoud Harmoush prayed, “Oh Allah, liberate the Al-Aqsa mosque and all the Muslim lands from the unjust tyrants and the occupiers. Oh Allah, destroy them, they are no match for You. Oh Allah, disperse them, and rend them asunder. Turn them into booty in the hands of the Muslims.”

•In February, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan said in Detroit, “I want to disabuse the Jews today of the false claim that you are the chosen of Gd and that Israel or Pales-tine belongs to you. I want to disabuse you of that.

I want to make it so clear. And I’m going to tell you about your future. You that think you have power to frighten and domi-nate the peoples of the world: I’m here to announce the end of your time.”

•Asked sarcastically at an event in New Orleans in May why Farrakhan attacks Jews, the Nation of Islam’s Ava Muhammad replied, “The only time the Jews have ever been present among us is to open their outposts, their retail stores to sell us damaged, cheap goods, marked up against the price...we will be free

of this bloodsucking parasite so they will no longer be able to sell us alcohol, drugs, depraved sex and every other type of low-life thing that is keeping us from a hereafter.” e don’t assume that these sentiments are representative of all or the majority of Ameri-can Muslims. To the contrary, despite the prevalence of such views in Muslim-majority nations, we would hope that, as is the case with the vast majority of other Americans, anti-Semitism would be confined to a minority. But it is curious that one of the most in-fluential pollsters in the country was reluctant to find out the answer to that question.

The Pew Research Center had an opportunity to shed some light on those legitimate con-cerns. Pew conducted a survey of American Muslims this year. It asked them many ques-tions, but according to a copy of the questionnaire on its website, Pew did not ask about their attitudes toward Jews or Israel— despite the fact that the topic is a potential flash-point. Yet earlier in the year, in another survey, Pew did ask people of other faiths to weigh in on Muslims.

Unfortunately, Jew-hatred comes from a variety of corners today—including among some American Muslims—and it is dangerous to focus on only one element. American Jewry must become aware of the gamut of Jew-hatred that sadly exists and be prepared to fight it regardless of the source.

A very different New York Marathon Poland…

hen people jogged or ran, back in the 1980s and 1990s, it was mostly for the utilitarian purpose of staying fit.

Running was exercise. Now, when people commit to run a marathon, there often is a context, a life event that triggers the decision. A story.

As you watch the runners run by, as you cheer on total strangers, a random quilt of stories — of which you may not know much — threads itself along the course. The Tshirts alone read like an unexpected burst of tributes, of love, of obituaries, of gratitude, and of more love. Pulsing through it all is our vulnerable yet resilient humanity — in some cases, despite the odds, the choice to move forward again, one footstep at a time.

Living in New York City, I see the New York Marathon, the largest in the world. It is part and parcel of November in New York, as much a part of the landscape as the fiery burnished fall foliage colors of Central Park.

A friend of mine who after 15 years of Manhattan living moved to New Jersey said she knew she wasn’t in the city anymore not when she had to drive her car for even the smallest errand, but when the day of the New York Marathon arrived. That’s when she realized, “I’m not in Kansas (New York City) anymore.” The marathon is that ingrained in New York life. The city that never sleeps shuts down towelcome over 50,000 runners from around the world. Bridges, boroughs and Central Park — they’re all part of the famed course.

And it’s not just New York Marathon day itself. I’ve always loved the day after the marathon, winding, seemingly endlessly, in Central Park, which at this point in the season is always painted in glowing sunset colors. It’s usually a perfect, crisp, fall day with that special fall light. It’s like the calm that settles after a storm. People roam the city from all over the world. Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue is packed, from the Met to the Jewish Museum and all the way to Neue Galerie. In the span of five minutes you hear so many languages. People are out strolling with pleasure, their medals hanging from their neck with pride.

As they pass people by, everyone smiles at them knowingly, a congratulatory glimmer in their eyes. Navy blue flags attached to elegant lamps still flap in the wind with the words: “Marathon Route.” It’s like the isru chag, the post-holiday of the New York Marathon! n an individual level, marathon running is often part of a runner’s story — remembering someone, running for someone, overcoming a hardship, or any other inspirational reason. But on a macro level, this year the New York Marathon ran with a story of its own.

It was a troubling week in New York, the site of a terrorist attack by an ISIS sympathizer on the Tuesday prior to the Marathon.

Eight innocent people were killed, most vacationers from Argentina on a school reunion trip, biking down the road on a per-

fect fall day. Many others were injured. Not too many years back, there was the Boston Marathon bombing. So somehow there is this cumulative affect of marathon-tingedwith-terror that somehow has also become part of the story.

If any terrorists out there thought they were going to shut down New York’s or New Yorkers’ enthusiasm for the marathon, leaving people frightened at home, boy were they wrong. Aside from the runners, the 50,000 strong who uplifted the entire city, there were the millions of New Yorker’s flanking the route, cheering on total strangers.

This was the story of this year’s New York Marathon as a whole: a show of endless optimism, strength, resilience, unity.

It was about the unified human spirit and its strength as a collective. That’s who the day — the marathon — belonged to this year.

Certainly, there are the humorous day-after marathon videos of people barely able to walk or function. (I’ve been there, even if only from running a half marathon.) But in addition to that, and this year in New York especially, beyond the powerful and individual stories of the runners, the marathon was the story of a community whose defiant American spirit shined on the streets of New York, still resonating the next day, the day after, the isru chag, ready for the stories that next year’s New York Marathon runners will surely bring.

Continued from page 4 wski and Chipczynska of exaggerating Poland’s antiSemitism problem as part of a “political war” against Law and Justice. Piszewski and Chipczynska dismissed that charge and claimed the accusing groups are not legitimate representatives of Polish Jewry.

Sergiusz Kowalski, a leader of a Polish branch of B’nai B’rith and an ally of Piszewski and Chipczynska, called the four men who met Kaczynski “court Jews.” And Michael Schudrich, Poland’s chief rabbi, told the Forward that Daniels “has become a supporter of the ultra-right wing.”

Daniels has denied this, adding that his organization is willing to participate in intercultural dialogue with a wide range of partners.

What about Israel?

For the most part, Israel has remained silent about Holocaust revisionism and incidents of antiSemitism in countries that have friendly ties to the Jewish state. But on Monday, a spokesman for its Foreign Ministry called the Warsaw event “a dangerous march of extreme and racist elements,” and urged Polish authorities to act against the organizers.

Last year, Israel’s ambassador to Poland, Anna Azari, hosted Tadeusz Rydzyk, a Catholic priest who runs a radio station that the U.S. State Department has called a main purveyor of anti-Semitism.

She defended the move as important outreach even as Never Again, Pankowski’s group, called it a “big mistake.”

Azari did speak out last month against proposed legislation on restitution, arguing its preclusion of claims by distant relatives and non-citizens discriminates against Jews whose families lost property in Poland during or after the Holocaust. An Israeli restitution official told JTA, referring to the proposed law: “First the Nazis seized private property and then the communist authorities of Poland seized it, when most Polish Jews were already dead.”

Ultimately, however, Israel’s attitude seems to be guided by comments Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made in 2013 during the visit by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski to Jerusalem.

Noting the suffering of non-Jewish Poles and Jews under Nazi occupation, Netanyahu observed that “Poland and Israel have to support each other.”

Qatar, like Arafat, finds a few Jewish friends agogue Council had the right to veto any action by the council, and Jacobs informed Siegeman that the OU was vetoing the trip to Egypt. Siegman proceeded anyway, arguing that canceling would “cause a national scandal,” and besides, he said, the participants in the delegation had already incurred “considerable personal inconvenience” to obtain the requisite vaccinations.

Jacobs’ fears were soon borne out. Upon their return, delegation members were quoted in the U.S. press saying they were “impressed”

by Egypt’s “genuine desire for peace.” They said they assured Egyptian officials “that Israeli leaders would do everything possible to achieve success in the peace negotiations,” implying Israel would make additional concessions. A report on the CBS program Sixty Minutes cited the Synagogue Council’s trip to Cairo as evidence that some prominent American Jews sympathized with the Egyptian position in the negotiations.

In an OU press release, Jacobs pointed to the Sixty Minutes broadcast as confirmation “that the ill-conceived trip continues to inflict considerable damage upon Israel’s support in this country.” en years later, when Yasir Arafat began trying to improve his image in the United States, he likewise employed the gambit of meeting with American Jews. A five-person Jewish delegation flew from the United States to Stockholm, in December 1988, to confer with the Palestine Liberation Organization chief on how to bring about U.S. recognition of the PLO. The delegation consisted of two academics, two officials of a peace center, and, most significantly, Menachem Z. Rosensaft, president of both the U.S. Labor Zionist Alliance and the International Network of Children of Jewish Holo-

he controversial invitation to officials of several American Jewish organizations to visit the gulf kingdom of Qatar follows the historical pattern of dictators trying to improve their image abroad by hosting American visitors.

Precedents include Josef Stalin’s welcoming of leftwing American artists and intellectuals in the 1920s and 1930s and, more recently, the visits to Cuba by various American celebrities and to North Korea by former basketball star Dennis Rodman.

Documents I discovered in the papers of the late U.S. Orthodox leader Harold Jacobs shed light on a related episode in 1978.

At a particularly sensitive point in that year’s Israel-Egypt peace negotiations, Orthodox Union officials learned that Synagogue Council of America executive director Henry Siegman had accepted an invitation to bring a Jewish delegation to Cairo.

Not surprisingly, Rosensaft and his colleagues were strongly criticized by many in the U.S. Jewish community. Rosensaft took to the op-ed page of the New York Times to complain that “rightwing Israelis and their acolytes in the American Jewish establishment” were denouncing the delegation “as ‘willing dupes’.”

Those critics turned out to be right, Rosensaft later conceded. In October 2000, in the midst of an Arafat-directed wave of violence against Israel, Rosensaft announced a dramatic change of heart. Writing in the Washington Post shortly after Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of confession and repentance, Rosensaft said that the time had come for him “to confess: I was wrong, so many of us were wrong … for allowing ourselves to be convinced that Yasser Arafat ever actually want-

ed peace with Israel.”

Recalling the delegation’s meeting with Arafat in Stockholm, Rosensaft wrote: “We genuinely believed him when he said that he and the PLO were committed to a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We believed him when he proclaimed an end to terrorism. We were wrong.”

Today, the Emir of Qatar understands that his policy of funding anti-Israel terrorist groups such as Hamas is hurting Qatar’s image in the United States. Charles, who is as popular in Saudi Arabia as Jerry Lewis is in France, rebuffed his aid’s desire to make the trip because there was no way the prince was going to travel to Israel.

In fact, since its founding in 1948, no member of the British royal family has visited Israel in an official capacity. Prince Philip was there in 1994 to attend a Yad Vashem ceremony to honor his late mother, and Prince Charles attended the funeral of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, but both were considered private visits.

In 2010, another British paper, the Telegraph, revealed that Charles joined Prime Minister Gordon Brown in lending his voice to a charity which raises money for Hamas.

“A charity praised last week by Gordon Brown and the Prince of Wales has channeled hundreds of thousands of pounds to groups linked to Hamas, the banned terrorist organization, according to security sources,” the Telegraph reported. “The Prime Minister and the heir to the throne personally praised Muslim Aid, whose

own accounts show it has paid at least £325,000 to the Islamic University of Gaza, where leading Hamas figures teach, and £13,998 to the al-Ihsan Charitable Society, designated by the US government as a “sponsor of terrorism” and a front for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group.

Security sources also claim that Muslim Aid has helped channel a further £210,600 to six other organizations in the Gaza Strip since July 2009, all of which they say are linked to Hamas.”

Per Elliott Abrams, the number-two person at the U.S. National Security Council under President Bush 43, has suggested that the royal family’s refusal to undertake a state visit to Israel is a reflection of bias against the Jewish state. “The continuing failure or refusal of any royal to make an official or state visit to Israel is an anomaly that suggests bias, and undermines potential British influence in the region,” Abrams wrote for the Council on Foreign Relations in 2014.

It’s easy to feel bad for Britain’s Prince Charles, after all the guy’s main purpose in life is to wait for his mum to die so he can take over her job. Continued from page 18 of ordinary Russians into the Bolshevik Party—a good portion of them completely baffled by the finer points of Marxist theory, and often bearing crude social prejudices like anti-Semitism—left the Bolshevik Old Guard more and more isolated.

But none of this ennui gave pause to the party’s rapacious brutality, on full display when a rebellion of workers and sailors in the naval fortress of Kronstadt was unceremoniously crushed. The centenary of that atrocity falls in March 1921.

Throughout these early revolutionary years, anti-Semitism remained a social force in the Soviet Union, and therefore ripe for use as a political instrument should the need arise. Few would doubt Lenin’s sincerity in taking the view that it is—as one of his British followers memorably put it—“the nature of the capitalist trap that lies behind the stinking bait of antiJew propaganda.” But this Leninist critique of the pogromists’ delusion did not immunize the communists themselves from anti-Semitism.

Once the Yevsektsiya finished its job of crushing Jewish self-expression, it too was designated as a reactionary manifestation of Jewish separatism and shut down.

Until 1991, when the Soviet Union finally dissolved following a bitter Cold War of half a century, the seeds planted by the Bolsheviks’ Jewish policy continued to bear their bitter fruit. Jews were banned from emigrating, and those who

wanted to emigrate to Israel were singled out for special punishment. The anti-Semitic crescendo reached its peak in 1953, with the infamous “Doctors’ Plot” of Joseph Stalin’s final year; the crescendo never fully dissipated, with Jews subjected to government quotas in education and jobs. Viciously anti-Semitic propaganda, depicting “Zionists” as hook-nosed bankers, was presented as progressive anti-Zionist solidarity with the oppressed, dispossessed Palestinians. In the grim years of communist leaders like Leonid Brezhnev and Yuri Andropov, anti-Zionist Soviet “academicians” became even louder and more outlandish with their conspiracy theories, while the KGB offered generous support to Palestinian terrorists as well as an assortment of German, Japanese, Italian and other armed revolutionary groups.

For anyone over age 20, there will be a Bolshevik centenary to anticipate every year, sometimes more than once. For example, next year, the centenary of the Yevsektsiya’s 1918 founding will be an occasion to commiserate on the terrible fate of Soviet Jews under their own regime, many years before millions of them were hunted down by the invading Nazis. The overriding point is, hardly any of these occasions will be an opportunity for celebration. That is a reminder of how scarred the Jewish people were by the twin Soviet and Nazi experiments in totalitarianism, and why we need to remain vigilant about our liberties in our own troubled century.

By Yaakov Lappin, JNS When it comes to terrorism emanating from the Gaza Strip, most public attention usually focuses on Hamas, the group that rules the coastal enclave. But Israel’s latest discovery and destruction of a cross-border attack tunnel has brought to light the role of Gaza’s second-largest terror faction, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

The IDF is on high alert for the possibility of revenge attacks from PIJ following Israel’s destruction of the tunnel on Oct. 30. PIJ dug the tunnel, which had crossed into Israeli territory, and the terror group reportedly sustained most of the 15 casualties that resulted from the IDF’s explosion of the tunnel.

The Israeli defense establishment believes that PIJ has around 10,000 armed members as well as its own rocket arsenal and tunnel network. It has a unique religious affinity with the Iranian Shi’a regime, and may be receiving messages from Tehran to escalate the Palestinian conflict with Israel. Hamas, on the other hand, is likely pressuring PIJ to avoid sparking a renewed round of violence at this time, due to Hamas’s desire to avoid endangering its agreement to form a Palestinian unity government with the Fatah faction by Dec. 1.

Dr. Ely Karmon, a senior research scholar at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, Israel, noted that from its inception, PIJ “acknowledged the importance of the Iranian revolution and its influence.” He said that PIJ— not Hamas—has been the “real proxy of Iran.”

PIJ’s command center is located in Damascus, Syria, and the group coordinates its actions with Iran, according to Israeli assessments.

At the same time, Karmon told JNS, PIJ “cooperates with Hamas in the digging of tunnels, and making use of them.”

The fact that Hamas personnel “acted immediately to take part in the rescue operation of the trapped diggers” following this week’s destruction of the tunnel is the latest evidence of the terror groups’ cooperation, he added.

Looking ahead, Karmon argued that “due to Hamas’s interest to continue with the reconciliation effort [with Fatah], and despite possible pressure by Iran [to escalate the security situation], I believe that PIJ will not act immediately to revenge the killing of its people, and if it does, it will try to do so in the form of a terror attack inside Israel.”

Will violence escale?

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Shlomo Brom, a senior research associate at the Tel Aviv-based Institute

for National Security Studies, said it is important to view the constraints that exist on Gazan terror factions in political—not only military—terms.

“Hamas signed an agreement with Fatah, and it is in the first stages of implementation,” Brom, a former director of the Strategic Planning Division in the IDF General Staff, said. “It is clear to Hamas that an escalation with Israel now could lead to a collapse of this initiative, which they have a big interest in.”

Gaza’s cash crisis, and the pressure placed on Hamas by the Fatah-run Palestinian Authority, which included a cut to the coastal territory’s electricity supply, purportedly drove Hamas to agree to the unity government. Using the unity government to escape its isolation remains Hamas’s “main concern” right now, Brom stated.

Combined with Israel’s underground anti-tunnel wall that is under construction, it would appear as if the days of Gaza’s cross-border tunnels are numbered.

Nevertheless, inside Gaza, Hamas has constructed what IDF officials describe as an “underground city”—a maze of subterranean pathways that enable terrorists to move around, mobilize weapons, launch strikes and stay out of the Israeli Air Force’s sights.

But the assumption that this underground city is a safe zone is deeply flawed, according to a source from the IDF Southern Command. “[Hamas] built this underground city to operate out of our sight. These tunnels will become death traps in the next war. My advice to them is, stay out of the tunnels,” the source told JNS. With Israel’s enhanced tunnel-detection capabilities, which include dedicated teams of specialists sifting through intelligence to map out the tunnels, the underground structures will become liabilities for Hamas, rather than assets, according to the source.

“In officer-training courses, commanders are taught to make decisions on the battlefield based on the situation at hand—to go left or right, forward or backwards. But if you dig a tunnel, once you enter it, you can only move in one direction.

You can only decide to go forward or not to go forward. The route is set,” the source said. “And I’m telling them, do not go in. Those who enter tunnels will not come out. The tunnels will either collapse with the people inside, or they will collapse empty.”

In the next war, he said, “I will not check to see if [terrorists] are inside the tunnels or not.”
