By Vanessa Parker, Nassau Herald Since Ari Lesser’s video “Hamas� was posted to YouTube on Sept. 8, more than 90,000 have viewed it.

Events that happened in Israel over the summer inspired a musical collaboration between Scot Jay, a Cedarhurst native who produces ďŹ lms and videos, and Lesser, a rap artist from Cleveland.

When Lesser created another music video, “Boycott Israel,� a year ago, also posted on YouTube, it caught Jay’s attention. Currently at about 290,000 views, that video suggests to anyone favoring a boycott of Israel that there are several other countries that also merit the same treatment.

Lesser, 27, who spent time in Israel as a student, happened to be near the Five Towns when Jay contacted him to do the video. They decided to shoot “Hamas� at a pro-Israel rally in Union Square last month. “I said, ‘Let’s get a camera and bang something out’,� Jay said. “I hope to accomplish a lot of things through my music,� he said. “By writing, I learn a lot.

My music is based on the Torah and Jewish teachings and traditions.�

Avi Posnick, a spokesman for Stand With Us, said his group discovered Lesser when he did the boycotting video. “We invited him to perform at our annual Festival of Lights event last year,� he said.

By Malka Eisenberg Knesset member Rabbi Dov Lipman told his aliyah story to the Young Israel of Woodmere last week, reecting on his life in the Knesset and in Israel. “I would like to inspire people to make aliyah,â€? he told The Jewish Star prior to his Tuesday evening address. “If 100,000 North Americans picked up and moved to Israel, it would have a major impact in improving Israel. Anything I can do to get people to explore that option I view as my responsibility.â€?

During Rabbi Lipman’s three-day visit to the U.S., he spoke to the International Lion of Judah Conference, a major Jewish Federations of North America women’s charity event, as well as in Woodmere and Riverdale where he appeared on behalf of Nefesh B’Nefesh. “People who make aliyah out of choice bring an ideology, a freshness,� he told The Star. “Israelis tell me that it inspires them, the Zionist spirit. [North Americans] are very tolerant, open, accepting people.�

Rabbi Lipman said that in Israel he ďŹ nds that people are put in “boxes,â€? which leads to polarization. “Their fresh approach to Judaism will heal the fractures in society.â€?

By Jeffrey Bessen, Nassau Herald Once again, bussing problems in the Lawrence School District has provoked upset among the parents of some yeshiva students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need more organization of the transportation ofďŹ ce,â&#x20AC;? said Cedarhurst resident Emily Oami, who works full-time and has two boys in Yeshiva of South Shore, in Woodmere,

and two girls in Shulamith School for Girls, in Cedarhurst. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had to physically come into the ofďŹ ce,â&#x20AC;? she added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is not user-friendly.â&#x20AC;?

Lack of communication and poor organization are the two major complaints voiced by parents about during the ďŹ rst several days of the new school year.

Oamiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issue â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a change of bus stop loca-

tion â&#x20AC;&#x201D; was eventually resolved.

Rachel Guetta said she left 20 messages over a weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time about getting her two daughters a bus to the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway. Guetta, who also works, said she registered the change on Aug. 28, and was told by transportation ofďŹ ce staffers that it would take a week. When

the bus didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show up when school began at HAFTR the following Thursday, Guetta began making calls. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bus stop right across the street from my house in North Woodmere,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just asking and inconveniencing friends [to get my kids]. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re rearranging their schedules to help me.â&#x20AC;?

The Community Relations Council has created an escrow account that will accept tax-deductible donations of any size. The amount of each reward will be made by the council, in consultation with law enforcement agencies.

By Vanessa Parker, Nassau Herald In the wake of 15 reported possible antiSemitic hate crimes this year in Nassau County, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island has partnered with county ofďŹ cials and Roslyn resident Brad Gerstman to offer rewards for information. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Three of those reports have occurred in the Five Towns,â&#x20AC;? said Det. Lt. Gary Shapiro, the commanding ofďŹ cer of the police departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Affairs unit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of those cases are criminal mischief, property damage type crimes using words and symbols such as a swastika.â&#x20AC;?

County Executive Ed Mangano said that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nassau County will not tolerate bias crimes and is meeting with Jewish community leaders to discuss enhanced security measures during the upcoming High Holidays.â&#x20AC;?

The fund, begun with a $1,000 donation from Gerstman, will reward individuals who provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of those committing anti-Semitic crimes.

Beware trusting Turkey BEN COHEN VIEWPOINT

H

ereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the good news: the Obama administration has ďŹ nally grasped that the onslaught of the Islamic State terror group through Iraq and Syria needs to be defeated and destroyed. Sixty-one percent of Americans, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, agree with the president.

At a time when much of the world believes, not unreasonably, that America is in retreat, the administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s willingness to pursue military options and its almost George W. Bushesque rhetoric regarding the â&#x20AC;&#x153;evilâ&#x20AC;? of Islamic State, as Secretary of State John Kerry put it, is most welcome.

Even so, the issue of which states to involve in the battle against Islamic State should leave us less sanguine about where this battle might lead. Yes, yes, I know: This is the Middle East, and we are therefore compelled to work with distasteful regimes, such as the Saudis, in accomplishing strategic

goals like the expulsion of Saddam Hussein from Kuwait in 1991. This time, however, we need to avoid an outcome that strengthens Iranian inďŹ&#x201A;uence in the region, which means that we cannot indeďŹ nitely postpone the discussion over what to do about the brutal regime of Bashar alAssad in Damascus.

By the same token, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another discussion that we cannot indeďŹ nitely postpone.

That one concerns the role of Turkeyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a country described by a senior Obama administration ofďŹ cial, in an interview with the New York Times that coincided with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visit to Ankara, as â&#x20AC;&#x153;absolutely indispensableâ&#x20AC;? to the struggle against Islamic State.

There is, of course, a great deal of merit behind that statement. Turkey is historically an ally of the U.S. and a member of NATO. The airbase the Americans maintain at Incirlik has been operationally critical to our military engagements in the region over the last quarter of a century, including the present ďŹ ght against the terrorists of Islamic State.

At the same time, there are three key reasons why we should question whether the Turks can continue to be a pillar of an AmeriContinued on page 20

ISIS and the Nazis JOE GANDELMAN INDEPENDENTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S EYE

W

hither the Islamic State? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real double-edged question: where is the group otherwise known as ISIS headed, and can the United States and other civilized nations make it shrivel up and die?

The group is and has taken off like a bat out of hell, gobbling up territory and becoming a virtual murder machine.

President Barack Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speech on his plan to try to eliminate the ISIS threat could not have come soon enough for him and the Democrats. Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perceived hesitancy in responding to ISISâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s threat has decimated the Democrats Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s numbers on national security. And ISISâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nearly gleeful beheadings of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff had a huge impact on Americans: a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found Ameri-

cans paid more attention to those stories than any other over the past ďŹ ve years.

How fearful or angry are Americans? An ABC /Washington Post poll found 71 percent want air strikes against ISIS, 65 percent want expanded strikes and 74 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of Democrats want the strikes. Only 38 percent approved of Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance in foreign policy, an 8 point drop. Being the guy who got Osama bin Laden doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do you much good if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now the guy whose name is becoming linked with the Democratic Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest modern failure as President, Jimmy Carter.

But it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just the issue of bombing, striking back, and even protecting Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeland. The bottom line is ISIS is unlike anything the world has seen since the Nazis.

And in terms of their mercilessness and sheer pride in butchering men, women and children, they are even outdoing the Nazis.

Yes, the Nazis killed WAY many more.

Shmita and spirtuality: A response to terrorism Commentary by Rabbi Avi Weiss, JNS.org This Rosh Hashanah, 5775, will be different. It is a sabbatical year, a Shmita year.

According to Jewish law, every seventh year the land in Israel must remain fallow. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wish to get caught up in the legal intricacies here and instead delve into the traditionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deeper meaning, as it resonates powerfully in contemporary times.

The key to understanding Shmita is to reďŹ&#x201A;ect upon Shabbat. For author and translator Dayan Dr. Isidor Grunfeld, the essence of Shabbat is to remind us of G-dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mastery over the world.

In our workaday world we engage in creative work. But the concern is that, if successful, we may come to believe our achievements derive from our might and our power.

We can forget that our creative energies and successes in fact come from G-d. And so, for one day during the week, we withdraw from productive creativity to demonstrate that it is not we who are masters of the world, but G-d.

So, too, the Sabbatical year, Shmita. For six years we are mandated to work the land.

Here again, we could become so successful in our endeavors that we forget to credit Gdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hand in the result. And so, for one year, the land remains fallow: a reminder that the earth belongs to G-d. In the words of the Torah: the seventh year will be a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sabbath to the L-rd.â&#x20AC;?

Philosopher and psychologist Erich Fromm considered Shabbat a day to take cognizance ofâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;to celebrateâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the ecological beauty of the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Menuchah,â&#x20AC;? argued Fromm, is the state of rest between human beings and nature. Work, or â&#x20AC;&#x153;melachah,â&#x20AC;? is any disturbance in this equilibrium. For this

reason, on Shabbat we neither pluck an apple from a tree nor cut a blade of grass. In this, one day in seven, we promote perfect harmony with nature.

So, too, for Shmita. Like Shabbat, it teaches an important ecological lesson. For six years we plow, sow, harvest, and cultivate the land. Just as we can tire from our labors, the land too can grow weary. Thus, for the Sabbatical year, we step back, leave the land untouched, allow it to reinvigorate, and replenish its energy. As the Torah says of Shmita: it will be a Sabbath year â&#x20AC;&#x153;of solemn rest for the land.â&#x20AC;?

A third approach to the Shabbat-Shmita connection sees Shabbat as a day of self-reďŹ&#x201A;ection. In its ďŹ rst mention of Shabbat, the Torah states G-d ďŹ nished His work on the seventh day. But, if G-d ďŹ nished His work on the seventh day, He worked on Shabbat. Indeed He did, says the great commentator Rashi.

In six days, or stages, G-d created the world.

On Shabbat, G-d was creatively involved in assessing, in contemplating, its purpose. In the spirit of imitatio Dei, we do the same.

As Rabbi Norman Lamm has written, for six days of the week we engage in the creation of the outer world; on Shabbat we engage in the creation of the inner world, seeking the inner meaning and purpose to life itself.

Abraham Joshua Heschel explains it another way. For six days, we focus on having more; on Shabbat, we focus on being moreâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; we remember that â&#x20AC;&#x153;to have more is not to be more.â&#x20AC;?

So too, for Shmita. For six years we work the land: we engage in the outer world. But in the seventh year we too need a sabbatical, to contemplate the deeper questions of meaning and purpose. As the Torah states: and the Sabbatical year will be â&#x20AC;&#x153;for you/for your sake.â&#x20AC;?

This search for inner meaning can also resonate with the sound of the shofar. The

voice of the shofar does not emanate from the larynxâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;it emanates from the inner breath, the inner soul, that part of us that seeks the deeper purpose of life. â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘ This has been a very difďŹ cult time. Recently, Steven Sotloff was beheaded by ISIS or, as the group now calls itself, the Islamic State. Steven was a courageous journalist, a Jew who even in captivity fasted on Yom Kippur. His atrocious murder follows the similar execution of James Foley just two weeks earlier. With these actions Islamic State has demonstrated that humans can become beastsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;actually, lower than beastsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for no beast other than humans kill for such purposes.

When we see the video or hear the audio of these horrors, we can feel hopeless and helpless. But there is something we can do.

You and I, individually and collectively, can make a difference. Each of us can respond to profanity by living lives of holiness.

Of course, there must be a strong geopolitical response to Islamic State to defeat these barbarians and their ilk. At the same time, however, we can individually contribute a complementary spiritual response to bolster our countriesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; actions.

One such spiritual response is to incorporate the message of Shmita into our lives: to not take our blessings for granted, to take time to contemplate and celebrate the beauty around us. This message declares our commitment to a merciful G-d, who mandates that we respect the world and its inhabitants by living lives of meaning, godliness, and goodness.

By Anthony Rifilato, Long Beach Herald Actor Billy Crystal stood on the corner of Monroe Boulevard and East Chester Street in Long Beach, just a few blocks from where he grew up, and recalled playing ball as a boy along the Park Avenue malls that were once lined with sycamore trees.

“That’s where we learned how to play baseball, that’s where we learned how to play football, that’s where we sat under a tree and read a book,” said Crystal, who moved to California in 1976. “They’re all gone — all of these beautiful sycamores that have been here for almost 100 years are gone. The public areas need these trees. Kids need these trees in parks and public walkways.”

trees that have been removed throughout his hometown in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Due to safety concerns, and because the trees were inundated with saltwater, the city has been cutting down trees — such as those along medians and sidewalks — throughout the city that were found to be dead or substantially damaged.

At a press conference on Monday, where they were joined by city officials, Crystal and Senator Charles Schumer called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to cover the cost of removing and replacing 2,500 damaged trees, an estimated $2.5 million.

In February, the City Council voted unani-

mously to hire the Brooklyn-based Dragonetti Brothers Nursery and Landscaping to remove the trees, and the work began in May. After the storm, arborists determined that more than 45 percent of the trees they inspected should be removed.

Jim LaCarrubba, the commissioner of public works, said that the removal process is about 95 percent complete.

“The destruction of the trees has been a significant loss for the city,” City Manager Jack Schnirman said.

In addition to restoring the aesthetics of once tree-lined streets, Schumer said, replacing the trees will help prevent soil erosion, improve air quality and mitigate future flooding.

ne of the least known publications in our community is the Journal of Jewish Music and Liturgy published by Yeshiva University’s Beltz School of Jewish Music, Orthodox Jewry’s primary training grounds for the cantorate. The latest issue includes an excellent and timely essay by Cantor Bernard Beer, a longtime resident of Cedarhurst, director of the Belz School and executive vice president of the Cantorial Council of America, entitled, “Enhancing The Yamim Noraim Prayers Through Synagogue Chant As Reflected By Rabbinic Tradition: The Significant Role of the Sheliach Tzibbur.”

Cantor Beer informs us from the outset of the vital role played by the cantor in the recitation and interpretation of the sacred liturgy. For those who have come to regard the cantorate as the playground for musical gymnastics and long drawn-out services, Cantor Beer’s essay with dispel you of these previously held notions.

While a bit technical at times, the author does make his point that the sacred prayer texts are well served by a properly trained and religiously informed cantor: “The significant role of the Sheliach Tzibbur specifically during the High Holidays, is indicated by the number of musically elaborate prayers relegated for recital by the Sheliach Tzibbur himself.”

This point is further elaborated upon by noting that just about all the major prayers unique to both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are accompanied with unique musical renditions that serve to give them a musical profile that is special.

“Prayer is communal and its music serves as a source of emotional communication,” writes Cantor Beer. He quotes Leib Glantz, a celebrated cantor, composer and scholar, as noting that “words alone, even the most sublime, are not able to create the holy bond between man and G-d. The power of song emphasizes and enriches the yearnings of our hearts and enables us to express our deepest feelings and emotions.”

Cantor Beer cites various liturgical works common to this season’s prayers and presents the sheet music related to many of these works, a resource that should be of keen in-

terest to those familiar with the reading of musical scores.

He concludes his presentation: “The traditional chants of the synagogue, which so profoundly stir the hearts of our people, and which have aroused interest even outside the Jewish faith, have been handed down to us from generation to generation. It is incumbent upon all of us to help preserve our synagogue music heritage. … It is by means of his prayers, especially during the High Holidays, that the chazzan becomes an influential ‘medium’ through whose devotional chant many influences are transmitted.”

Another essay related to this time of year’s liturgy was recently published in our nation’s capital, entitled, “The Recitation of L’David Hashem Ori V’yish’i During the Month of Ellul” by Rabbi Moshe Walter, wherin can be found a full and learned presentment of the role Psalm 27 plays thematically in the basic theme of this time of year.

1. He traces the source of the inclusion of Psalm 27 in this season’s prayers. 2. He explains in detail the reasons for this addition. 3. He explains the reasons against its recitation. 4. He goes into great detail in explaining the practical halachic issues that

surround the recitation of L’David.

Rabbi Walter explains one major reason for this psalm’s recitation that this writer found to be the most convincing: “The theme of the entire mizmor is one that speaks of man’s yearning and passion for closeness with G-d. The emotions which the author elicits in this chapter are the essence of how every individual should approach these special days. Reciting the powerful words twice daily for close to two months helps to concretize and to focus on the job of the Jew during Elul and Tishrei.”

FOR FURTHER STUDY Germaine to this subject you can find some really meaningful takes on prayer in Rav Shmuel Tal’s “Tal Chayim,” especially in his take on prayer as found on pages 53–65.

His writing is clear, sincere and most timely.

Also, any book by Velvel Pasternak on davening is worthwhile. His words are among the most informed among our people today. I state this without any equivocation.

And lastly, just a cursory glance at the index under prayer in “Path to the Tree of Life,” based upon the teachings in Tanya by Rav Mordechai Silver, will give you an excellent shiur on paper of some of the deeper spiritual meanings of the value of true prayer.

‘Circumcising’ the heart for repentance RABBI AVI BILLET PARSHA OF THE WEEK

ne of the reasons we read Parshat Nitzavim immediately before Rosh Hashana is because of its emphasis on the concept of teshuvah (repentance).

In the context of telling us about the aftermath of the blessings and curses that have been raised up until now, Moshe reminds the people that “you will return to the L-rd, your G-d, with all your heart and with all your soul, and you will listen to His voice according to all that I am commanding you this day.”

G-d will, in turn, bring you to the land, where He “will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, [so that you

may] love the L-rd your G-d with all your heart and with all your soul, for the sake of your life.” (30:6) The image of a circumcised heart invokes images from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (laughably edited at the one minute mark: bit.ly/1uCJQLz), because how else could one remove the heart’s foreskin?

Obviously it is meant to be a metaphor to the covering of the heart that makes the stone-cold heart impenetrable to change and repentance. (In case you thought it was to be literal, Ibn Ezra says the “milah” here is not like the physical one we are familiar with from your typical “bris milah.”)

But the verse in question (30:6) is much more famous than it lets on in our parsha.

The Hebrew which is translated as “your heart and the heart of” is one of the phrases quoted in all the sources about the repentance period leading up to Rosh Hashana because the words “Et Levavkha V’et L’vav” be-

gin with the letters which spell the word Elul.

As one would expect, there are a number of interpretations as to what exactly G-d will remove from the hearts of you and your children in this teshuvah process.

Ramban explains it as referring to a future time, when the heart will no longer have desires for things which are inappropriate. Coveting and desiring are a “foreskin” to the heart, and these bad character traits need to be removed, so a person can return to the innocent status of Man before the sin in the Garden of Eden.

Quoting Yirmiyahu 31:30-33, Ramban indicates that the excision of the heart’s “foreskin” is the nullification of the Yetzer Hara (the Evil Inclination). Similarly, in Yechezkel (36:26-27) we are given the indication that a new heart will be granted (in Messianic times) to those who will only have the inclination to do what is instinctively right.

Seforno refers to this “foreskin removal” as a turning away from every error that confuses the mind.

In a more poetic vein (though following the language of the verse), Kli Yakar draws attention to what the removal of the coat on the heart will do — open the heart to loving G-d. After all, as we read in the Tokhacha (Rebuke) of last week’s Torah portion, it is an inability to serve G-d with joy which would bring about the curses (28:47), and a circumcised heart would allow for love to creep its way into the special relationship we are meant to have with G-d.

The Baal Haturim parallels our verse to another that is oft-spoken these days, the second to last in Tehillim 27 (L’David Hashem Ori), which begins with the word “lulay.”

hadn’t planned on stopping to watch, but something about him caught my attention. Maybe it was his eyes, which was where his smile began; before it spread to the rest of his face; you could see it coming in the twinkle in his eyes.

Or maybe it was the fact that, knowing his history as a Holocaust survivor, it seemed so powerful that on a day such as this, he could tell his story, with such a smile.

It was Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, the anniversary of the day our Temples were destroyed, the city of Jerusalem ransacked and hundreds of thousands of Jews murdered or sold into slavery, and he

was being interviewed on Israeli television.

A day full of painful memories for the Jewish people and yet here he was, smiling; so I stopped to hear his story.

“How old are you?”

The question hung in the air as the Kapo in concentration camp uniform with the authority over life and death stared down at the frail little boy in front of him.

Normally, an innocent question, yet in the camps, it was a question that could get you killed.

“Fifteen,” answered the boy, who could not have been more than eight. There was no room for little Jewish boys in the Nazi world of death camps, and his older brother Naftali had warned little Srulli to lie.

The Kapo glanced down at the boy with a skeptical look and asked again: “How old are you?”

And again, little Srulli answered: “Fifteen.”

At which point he asked the fellow behind the boy: “Is he your son or your brother?”

“My brother,” answered Naftali.

“Well, how old is he?” asked the Kapo again.

“He already told you, he’s fifteen,” answered Naftali, trying to stay calm.

At which point the Kapo looked around and, lowering his voice and motioning towards the syringe in his left hand, said: “Look, this is a typhus vaccine, and it’s based on weight which I figure out according to age. If he’s really eight years old and I give him the vaccine of a 15 year old, it will kill him. But if he’s really 15 and I give him the vaccine of a 10 year old, he’ll probably get typhus and die, so I ask you again: how old is he?”

Naftali thought for a moment and, in a voice barely above a whisper answered: “He is seven.”

At which point, the Kapo looked around

and squirted half of the injection onto the ground before giving young Yisrael (Srulli) Lau the typhus injection that ultimately saved his life.

And 60 years later, on Israeli National Television, the young child, saved from the Holocaust, now famous around the world as Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, the former Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, smiled his signature broad smile and commented: ‘There were many angels that conspired to allow me to sit here today, and that Kapo was one of them.

So what do you do with a story like that? t’s true there are many angels in life and they can often take the most mundane forms, from the simple traffic light that keeps you from being in the wrong place at the wrong time, to the little girl whose temper tantrum sends you to the back of a pizza store saving your life from a suicide bomber.

There are those who will say that we must repent, that there are lessons to be learned, and that the books of life and death, sickness and health, joy and sadness will once again be open, and we must return from our evil ways in order to hope for a good year. Yet, deep down, that theory just does not seem to hold a lot of water, does it?

Do we really think that everyone who fasts and prays with all their heart is guaranteed a good year? Are we convinced that any person who truly loves his fellow human being and can somehow succeed in removing judgment and hatred of others from his thoughts, is guaranteed a good year?

And what of all the pain and heartache this past year? Was it all simply because some people did not pray hard enough?

As we do every year in the weeks leading up to Rosh Hashanah, we read the portions of Ki-Tavoh, Nitzavim and Vayelech, which seem to repeat again and again the idea that the day will come when tremendous calamities will befall the Jewish people.

Indeed one need not be a scholar to see in Jewish history a pattern of exile and pain.

What is the point of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, if we are doomed to inevitable? Judaism believes we can change things, but how?

It seems that this week’s portion contains a new covenant: “Atem Nitzavim hayom … le’ovrecha’ bebrit Hashem Elokecha’, asher Hashem Elokecha’ koret imcha hayom.” (“You are standing here today … to pass into the covenant of [with] Hashem your G-d … which Hashem your G-d seals with you today.”)

(29: 11) A careful look at these portions makes clear what this new and final covenant is

all about: this is the covenant of Teshuvah (Repentance).

The day will come, says the Torah, when all the blessings and curses have come to pass when “Ve’shavta’ ad Hashem Elokecha,” when we will return. (See Devarim 30:1-6) We will return from all the far-flung places where we have wandered and from all the lost paths to which we have strayed.

Many translate teshuvah as ‘repentance,’ but that is not really accurate. Repentance in the dictionary means regret or feeling sorry, but regret alone is simply about guilt, and that is not what Judaism wants, despite all the jokes to the contrary.

Regret is not necessarily a bad thing, because regret is the first stage towards teshuva, and involves recognizing the fact that there is something wrong I would like to fix. It suggests that we cannot undo the past — but Judaism believes we can hope to change the future.

Teshuvah, from the word ‘shuv’ or ‘return,’ is an attempt to go back to who I could have been before all the mistakes I have made. Teshuvah is about creating a whole new reality, by tracing history back to the precise point where the present reality we struggle with began to go astray.

Regret and repentance is what feeds programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, wherein a person needs to accept they will always be an alcoholic, so that they can begin the long road to modifying how they respond to that need and behave in its presence.

Teshuvah, however, is the ability to create a whole new person who is not and never was and never could be an alcoholic.

Every year on Rosh Hashanah as we begin a new year, we have the capacity yet again, to redefine who we are and who we choose to be.

Best wishes for a Shanah Tovah full of love and joy, purpose and peace.

Rabbi Lipman complained that after 12 years of Jewish day school education he found himself, on making aliyah, not fluent in Hebrew.

“I was there for hours!” He pointed out the knowledge of Hebrew opens up the world of learning. He was recently learning neviim

reshonim (prophets) with his ten-year-old daughter and translating. She stopped him and asked why he was doing that, since she understood the Hebrew of the Tanach.

Rabbi Lipman and his wife and four children made aliyah with Nefesh B’Nefesh in 2004 and gained notice for his activism in his home town, Bet Shemesh. Asked to join the new Yesh Atid party, he was elected to the 19th Knesset in January 2013.

He received semicha (rabbinic ordination) from Ner Israel Rabbinical College in Baltimore and a Masters in Education from Johns Hopkins University, and is the author of four books about Judaism.

He said he is not advocating that “everybody drop everything and move to Israel” but “raise your children to do so, especially as religious believing Jews.

“When you read the Torah it’s so clear. I want to see more emphasis in education to move to Israel as a goal.”

Finally, to round out our interpretations (though surely there are many more), we have the Targum Yonatan who is rather blunt in his pronouncement of what the “circumcision of the heart” is meant to remove.

“G-d will remove the foolishness of your heart, and the foolishness of the heart of your children as He cancels the Yetzer Hara from functioning in the world, replacing him with the Yetzer Hatov.”

The message is clear. With the right attitude and outlook in the month of Elul, we have the chance to avoid the folly that comes from being slaves to our Yetzer Hara. Just look at the sins we all regret in our Viduy (confessions) on Yom Kippur.

Sins with our eyes, sins with our mouths, sins against our parents and teachers, sins against people to whom we pretend we are their friends.

With the right attitude going into the fi-

nal week pre-Rosh Hashana, hopefully we can see that the ways our Yetzer Hara veer us on the wrong path through ensnaring our hearts, is really a capitulation to foolish behavior we ought to be mature enough to avoid.

Anyone who is on a diet knows that after the initial decision that the current trajectory is a poor one, the next step is to be careful about what one eats. A mature person should be able to stick with it. But anyone who has ever broken a diet knows that it’s usually “just one little nibble, just one little snack, I’ll cheat a tiny bit, etc.” and the diet is over. Was the cheat enjoyable?

In many cases, probably. Was it worth it? In most cases, probably not. Was it necessary?

In every case, no.

So why do people do it? Because there is a foreskin on the brain which says, “Don’t listen to your earlier decision to change.

Indulge! Enjoy!” And an immature thought process justifies the poor decision.

The same holds true for the heart when it comes to Repentance. We know what we have to do. Let us find the inner strength to Repent with a complete, open, and exposed heart.

3-way Gaza fix-it pact JNS.org The United Nations has brokered an agreement on the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip between itself, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

The agreement will enable the PA to take a leadership role in the reconstruction process and also allow the involvement of the private sector.

The U.N. will monitor construction materials, as well as U.N. schools and facilities in Gaza, to make sure that the materials will not

be put to military use against Israel, said U.N. Middle East envoy Robert Serry, the Associated Press reported.

“While the cease-fire brokered by Egypt has largely held since Aug. 26, [Gaza] remains worryingly fragile with the underlying dynamics still unaddressed,” Serry told the U.N. Security Council, calling on the council to support the agreement.

An Oct. 12 donor conference intended to raise money for Gaza’s reconstruction will be hosted by Egypt and co-sponsored by Norway.

“deeply rooted in the Kurdish diaspora” and is “fighting against an existential threat in the region” in the form of Islamic State.

This brings us to the second reason. Turkey is hardly in a position to complain about Kurdish “terrorism” when it provides financial and political support to other terrorist groups in the Middle East, notably Hamas.

In a recent article for The Tower magazine, foreign policy analyst Jonathan Schanzer observed that “it is decidedly awkward for a NATO ally to be so outwardly supportive of Hamas in light of the group’s grisly record of violence against civilian targets since its inception in 1987.” Just as awkward, Schanzer pointed out, is Turkey’s involvement in sanctions-busting operations with Iran, as well as Erdogan’s relations with dubious individuals like Yasin al-Qadi, a Saudi businessman who was designated as a “terrorist financier” shortly after the Al-Qaeda atrocities of September 11, 2001.

Which brings us to reason number three.

States that support terrorist organizations abroad frequently have woeful records of suppression and intolerance at home. What was true of Saddam’s Iraq remains true of Assad’s Syria—and of Turkey, whose president is still to be confronted with the contradiction of membership in a democratic alliance like NATO and support for jihadist organizations like Hamas. Obama has delicately raised the issue with Erdogan—“The President and President Erdogan discussed the importance of building tolerant and inclusive societies and combating the scourge of anti-Semitism,” said a White House statement after the two leaders met at the last NATO Summit—but this assumes that a “tolerant and inclusive society” is what Erdogan wants. When you have a store in downtown Istanbul refusing entry to “Jew Dogs” at the same time that Erdogan lambasts Israel as “worse” than Adolf Hitler, that’s a misguided and even dangerous assumption.

Ultimately, the war against Islamic State is a war against the philosophy of jihad.

As with any war involving multiple parties fighting on the same side, an overarching political vision is nearly impossible to achieve.

During the Second World War, the U.S. and Britain had few illusions about the Soviet Union, even as they allied with it. Similar cynicism is warranted now when it comes to Turkey.

ISIS and the Nazis…

Even today, Neonazis insist Adolf Hitler would never do such a thing and that photos of Nazi executions and numbers of Jew killed are doctored. History shows the Nazis didn’t want word to get out about their “final solution” to the Jewish “problem,” and that Hitler ordered that the murders of Jewish innocents not be referred to directly in any documentation.

But, as some analysts increasingly note, ISIS members seem to be getting off on their power as they talk before their helpless, terrified victims in front of a camera.

Videos show ISIS members proudly being photographed holding bloody heads, and emotionless ISIS soldiers mowing down rows and rows of tied-up prisoners. Reports describe how fathers and their preteen sons are executed or young boys are taken out alone and shot. One of the most disturbing videos shows a clad-in-black ISIS executioner standing behind young woman and strangling her with a metal cord as a crowd watches. She violated some ISIS rules.

There is no mercy, so, yes, you can imagine what would happen if an ISIS team went into U.S. mall or what would happen to a city if the group obtained a nuclear weapon.

ISIS’s enemies are all who don’t adopt its specific brand of Islam. But unlike the Nazis, ISIS wants to get images of its murder and barbarism out to the world. When Twitter began shutting down ISIS linked accounts, ISIS threatened Twitter employees in San Francisco and Europe with assassination.

So what is ISIS? A movement? A real nation state? A group defiling the image of law-abiding Muslims who wouldn’t dream of chopping someone’s head off? A group acting out the most Orthodox instructions from Muhammad? A group totally distorting what Muhammad really meant or wanted? The debate over this and more will continue as Obama begins to implement his anti-ISIS policy and seeks to build an effective international coalition.

In truth, ISIS is a death-cult that celebrates brutality. They’ve become the world’s biggest, unapologetic producer and marketer of real “snuff” videos.

That isn’t exactly found in the Koran.

Continued from page 6 canled alliance. Firstly, the Turkish government’s pursuit of political outcomes that undermine American interests. Secondly, the murky relationship between the Turks and the various terrorist groups in the region. Thirdly, the growing intolerance that stains Turkish politics, and particularly the nakedly anti-Semitic rhetoric directed towards Israel by Turkey’s former prime minister and newly elected president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Let’s start with the first reason. The recent war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could have been ended much earlier had an Egyptian truce proposal, agreed to by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, been implemented. But the Egyptian initiative was derailed by a rival proposal from Turkey and Qatar, the two main patrons of Hamas. The Turkish-Qatari proposal temporarily seduced the U.S. State Department and resulted in the continuation of hostilities for several more days.

The issue of Turkish trustworthiness is equally alive in the context of Iraq and Syria. Turkey has expressed concern that weapons will fall into the hands of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a left-wing nationalist organization designated by the Americans and the Europeans as a terrorist group.

What this overlooks is the fact that the PKK, along with its Syrian offshoot, the PYD, has already played an “indispensable role” in the fight against Islamic State when, moreover, the rest of the world was looking the other way. They are also instrumental to the current offensive against Islamic State in the area around Shingal, where tens of thousands of Yazidis, an ancient religious minority regarded as “unbelievers” by the Islamists, have endured a savage genocide.

Given American reluctance to deploy ground troops, and the recognition that the fight against Islamic State will be measured in years rather than months, it is legitimate to ask whether Turkish worries about the PKK should be elevated above other considerations. It can even be argued that there is little justification for maintaining the PKK’s “terrorist” designation. CAHAL is a local Special Education program providing a Torah education to over 100 local children with learning disabilities in all the yeshivas in the i 5-Towns/Far Rockaway community.

Ingredients: 12 crusty dinner rolls. Tops sliced off and centers scoped out. Be careful to leave a thick bottom base. 12 extra large raw eggs. Chopped fresh basil or any other herbs you like. 12 teaspoons of heavy cream. Salt and pepper to taste. Grated Parmesan cheese, mozzarella or any cheese you desire that melts evenly and well.

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350F. Place the bread shells on a baking sheet and crack an egg into each roll. Top each egg with some herbs, salt and pepper and about a teaspoon of heavy cream.

Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for about 17–20 minutes, until eggs are set and bread is lightly toasted. Brush the tops of the bread that was cut off with butter and place on a separate baking pan to brown lightly, approximately 10 minutes. Plate the bread bowls and place the tops halfway on so egg is visible. Serve immediately.

ummer is over and all kids are back in school. As I get stuck behind school buses each morning, I marvel at the audacity that some of these moms have, to conduct a five-minute conversation with the driver — while I am waiting impatiently to pass. You see, I have this down to a science, from entry to car till I drop my husband Jerry at the train station: it’s 4 minutes. Unless of course someone gets in my way.

One such morning while stuck, Jerry reminisced about his years in elementary school and with a chuckle recalled how he was always getting in trouble. Not that he was so bad, but it seemed he was always getting caught for something, which inevitably led to him being expelled for a day or two.

Jerry was a student at Yeshiva Rambam in Brooklyn, where he hated to keep still and liked to have fun. One day, when his class was in the hall, a friend challenged him to jump up and see if he could reach the glass exit sign on the top of the doorway. And jump up he did, and hit the exit sign, which crashed to the floor and shattered all over. His classmates scattered and he was sent to the principal’s office. “Get your coat and books and sit on the bench outside my office,” said Mr. Appel. Jerry was a starter during his basketball career, but in Rambam, he was always relegated to the “bench.”

So there he was on the bench outside the principal’s office waiting for his mom. Not only was he sent home, but he couldn’t return until he brought back a new glass exit sign with red lettering. Easier said than done.

And for those of you who thought he would make it through graduation without getting thrown out one last time, here’s one last caper. For weeks leading up to the graduation, the entire class practiced playing the recorder. His parents were forced to hire Mrs. Sales to tutor him in chalil playing, because he was failing music. After the performance at graduation, the graduates headed to a private room to take off their caps and gowns when they all threw up their hands in the air in celebration. As would be Jerry’s luck, the top of his recorder flew off barely missing Mr. Appel’s head.

“Joszef! That’s it! Get your stuff and get out! You cannot join this party or any other graduation parties this week.”

Jerry took his stuff, exited the building and stood on Kings Highway alone. He could not bring himself to tell his parents that he was thrown out of his own graduation. So for a half an hour Jerry’s parents were mingling with the other parents, trying to figure out where Jerry was. Finally they went outside where they found Jerry, who explained that he was bored inside and came out for some fresh air. Jerry never told them the real reason he was standing outside. Being that he didn’t want to hurt them, he left the house each day as if going to the graduation parties and hung out, outside the building by himself.

trying to find an exit sign. His mom would wait outside and he would enter each store only to relay the news that that they didn’t carry exit signs. “What made your mom think they carried exit signs in nearby neighborhood stores?”

I asked.

Then there was the time he was caught throwing snowballs outside school. Throwing snowballs was against Rambam’s constitution and so the principal screamed, “Jerry, go sit on the bench.” That wasn’t so bad, because at this point Jerry was used to sitting on the bench.

But what he didn’t expect was what came next.

“Jerry,” the principal said, “I know you’re going to Grossinger’s for winter break, but since you didn’t follow the rule of our constitution, you have to write out the Constitution of the United States.”

His parents allowed him to engage in sports activities during the day, but instead of going to the evening show he was stuck in his room writing out the Constitution and it’s amendments. (Meanwhile, I’m not sure why a seventh grader would want to see Henny Youngman, Shecky Green, Freddie Roman, or the like.)

Punishments inflicted by Mr. Appel for other of Jerry’s indiscretions included rewriting the entire Moby Dick, Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and David Copperfield. One might say Jerry wrote many classics, which could explain why he loves reading the Classics to this day.

Although it seemed to Jerry that Mr. Appel took pleasure in expelling him, there was one time he was especially upset over it. For some reason Jerry couldn’t remember what his crime was, but he did remember the consequence.

It was the Thursday, before his bar mitzvah.

Mr.Appel sat at his desk looking at Jerry’s invitation and scratching his head. “How can I do this to your parents right before your bar mitzvah? They are such wonderful, kind and giving people, but I have no choice. As much as it pains me, I have to expel you. So Joszef, get your coat and books and go to “the bench.”

Archeologists unearth gas chambers at Sobibor An Israeli and Polish team of archaeologists has unearthed one of the main gas chambers at the Sobibor concentration camp, the Yad Vashemâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;World Center for Holocaust Research announced on Wednesday.

Located in eastern Poland, Sobibor was operated by the Nazis during the Holocaust from April 1942 to October 1943, during which time an estimated 250,000 Jews were murdered there. But after an uprising that saw several hundred Jewish prisoners try to escape, the Nazis closed the camp and bulldozed it in an attempt to erase its evidence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The discovery of the gas chambers at Sobibor is a very important ďŹ nding in Holocaust research,â&#x20AC;? said Dr. David Silberklang, a

senior historian at the International Institute for Holocaust Research.

Silberklang added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is important to understand that there were no survivors from among the Jews who worked in the area of the gas chambers. Therefore, these ďŹ ndings are all that is left of those murdered there, and they open a window onto the day-to-day suffering of these people.â&#x20AC;?

Photos released by the researchers of the site show a large rectangular building with brick walls that were subdivided into four chambers. A number of personal items were found at the site, including down a well, such as gold teeth, jewelry, perfume bottles, and medical items. â&#x20AC;&#x201D;JNS.org

Congress asked to withhold funds from biased professors A group of 10 Jewish, educational, and civil rights organizations issued a joint statement calling on the U.S. Congress to deny funds to Middle East Studies programs accused of having anti-American and anti-Israel bias, and to enact reforms to the process of federally funding those programs.

Congress is currently considering the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA), including Title VI, which provides

federal funds to 129 international studies and foreign language programs.

Entering a new school is often difficult but on their third day of school, the ninth Graders of the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls had the opportunity to start the new year in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere at their freshmen retreat upstate at Camp Kaylie. Two days of making new friends, meeting their grade-level advisors and freshmen faculty members, and having a very enjoyable time in a cozy setting gave the girls a comfortable foundation for their first year of high school.

Cupcake wars, duct-tape boating, ultimate dodge ball, go-carting and other fun activities enabled the girls to mingle with schoolmates who had come from other elementary schools.

The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County High School Class of 2018 was inaugurated at the annual freshman retreat at Camp Kaylie in upstate Wurtsboro.

The students participated in two days of activities, learning sessions, entertainment and “just getting to know one another” activities. The sprawling lawns with the fall foliage as the backdrop set the scene for the opening team building session and the class photo.

A highlight of the weekend was a situation dilemma skit performed by faculty, in which administrators and teachers impersonated an a new student trying to make new friends.

Thanks to Rabbi Aharon Friedler for organizing the retreat, and the faculty and senior student advisers who helped make this event a success.
