By Alina D. Sharon, JNS. org In the wake of the terrorist attack in the Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue in Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighborhood last week, Western media organizations rushed to downplay the culpability of the Palestinian terrorists who perpetrated the attack. Five people were murdered, including three American citizens; at least seven other Jewish worshippers were wounded. The U.K.-based newspaper The Guardian published a Reuters story about the attack that was originally headlined “Palestinians kill four in Jerusalem synagogue attack,â€? but changed the headline to “Four worshippers killed in attack on Jerusalem synagogue.â€? (Both headlines came before the death toll in the attack rose to ďŹ ve when a Druze policeman died of his wounds.) The Guardian also removed all references to Palestinians from the text of the article, writing only that “two menâ€? had perpetuated the attack. A Canadian Broadcasting Corporation article on the attack was headlined “Jerusalem police fatally shoot 2 after apparent synagogue attack,â€? implying that most of the culpability lies with Israeli police for responding to the attack. In what might have been an accidental — though still highly irresponsible — gaffe, CNN mislabeled its initial TV coverage of the terror attack with the headline, “Deadly attack on Jerusalem mosque.â€? “I would say [the CNN ‘mosque’ error was] predisposed — an honest mistake that was probably not consciously made, but revelatory of [an] underlying predisposition or bias,â€? said Eric Rozeman, Washington director for the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA). “Israelis Continued on page 5

By Naomi Ross The ďŹ rst bite of a Nomoo Ginger Slap cookie packs a perfectly spiced punch and leaves you craving more. That’s exactly what the new Bucks County-based cookie company was hoping for and the reason its dairy-free cookie won â€?Best New Baked Goodâ€? at Kosherfest 2014 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ. Six-thousand people attended this year’s Kosherfest, an event that provides exposure for new products and connects manufacturers, distributors and buyers. For many mainstream brands, Kosherfest is a chance to publicize their entry into the kosher market. Dufour Pastry Kitchens, for example, has been making high-quality, all-butter products for years but never had certiďŹ cation until this year. And for smaller new companies like Nomoo, Kosherfest is a venue at which they can develop connections and spread the word. Three-hundred-thirty companies were represented. Opportunities for product publicity extended beyond the world’s largest kosher trade show, explained Elen Bahr, Marketing Continued on page 22

The Orthodox Union issued the following statement on Tuesday, which it titled “Orthodox Union Rejects Incendiary Rhetoric.â€? We join in the outrage expressed throughout the Jewish community—and by people of good will everywhere—in reaction to the heinous murders committed last week by Palestinian terrorists in a Jerusalem synagogue. We share in collective anguish as our rabbis and teachers, teenagers, innocent women and children, and infants are targeted by brutal terrorists. The world must recognize such acts of brutal savagery as nothing less than an ongoing terror campaign to oust the Jewish people from the Land of Israel. We view a forceful response by Israeli security ofďŹ cials against such terrorists as morally justiďŹ ed and necessary to stop the brutality that threatens our brethren and, indeed, the civilized world. At the same time, we cannot countenance a response to terror that resorts to wholesale demonization, advocates for the collective punishment of Israeli Arabs, or calls for the destruction or dismantling of Muslim holy places. Such rhetoric is anathema to the Jewish religious tradition and has no place in civil society. Such rhetoric is wrong and must be repudiated, whether it is voiced by lay leaders, community leaders or rabbis. Such calls to action do not enhance the security of the State of Israel or enable Israel’s security forces to fulďŹ ll their difďŹ cult responsibilities. The Orthodox Union urges all members of our community to speak out against terrorism, stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Israel and support the Government of Israel’s ongoing efforts to protect the Jewish People and the Jewish State—but this must be done in a responsible fashion.
