Communities in northern Israel are preparing for an escalation of missile strikes.

Staff Sergeant Omer Sarah Bento, from Ge’a near Ashkelon, was killed when Hezbollah targeted a military base near Sefad yesterday.

Benjo, 20, was in the 91st Division’s 869th Combat Intelligence Collection unit. A month from completing her military service, she was due to remain in service until the end of the war.

A reservist of the Computer Service Directorate was seriously wounded. Seven other soldiers suffered light injuries and were evacuated to Ziv Hospital. The bombardment also struck an industrial area nearby.

IDF casualties since October 7 stands at 570.

Casualties since the ground war has risen to 233.

The IDF responded with a ‘serious response’ striking Hezbollah targets including the Radwan Force. Buildings, command centers and infrastructure were struck in Houneh, Dunin, Aadchit and Souaneh.

Daring raid frees hostages

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed a daring IDF operation that freed two hostages in the early hours of Monday.

Security forces rescued Fernando Simon Marman, 61, and Louis Har, 61, both taken from their homes on Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak on October 7. They were taken by helicopter to hospital where they were reunited with families. Both were in reasonable health despite not receiving medication while in captivity as promised by Hamas in a Qatar-mediated deal.

The operation followed intelligence. Special forces used a bomb to enter a second floor apartment in Rafah. They killed armed guards before freeing the hostages, shielding them under heavy fire.

Netanyahu said: “This is a day of joy mixed with sadness. Joy over the release of our hostages and sadness over our fallen soldiers.

Labour suspends election candidates

The Labour party has cut ties with two prospective parliamentary candidates over damning anti-Israel comments at an activist meeting in Lancashire shortly after the October 7 terror attack by Hamas.

Labour reversed a decision to stand by Parliamentary candidate Azhar Ali for the upcoming Rochdale by-election this month. Ali is being investigated. He was expected to win the nomination.

After procrastinating over Ali, Labour acted quickly when reported comments

by Graham Jones, a general election candidate for Hyndurn, emerged from website Guido Fawkes.

Jones was ‘administratively suspended’ pending an investigation.

In an audio recording reported in The Daily Mail, Ali, allegedly suggests Israel engineered the October 7 terror attack to justify its intensive ground operation to defeat Hamas in Gaza.

Ali is reportedly heard stating: ‘The Egyptians are saying that they warned Israel 10 days earlier... Americans warned them a day before there’s something happening... They deliberately took the security off, they allowed... that massacre that gives them the green light to do whatever they bloody want.’

Party MPs attempted to defend Ali’s actions as ‘completely wrong’ as they ‘did not reflect the party view’. Though Ali apologised, his comments brought an

inevitable conclusion.

The furore could not have come at a worse time for Labour and Starmer as they are riding high in the polls.

Leader Keir Starmer, after initially not commenting, said he took “tough and decisive action” when further information came to light.

“It is a huge thing to withdraw support for a Labour candidate during the course of a by-election,” he said. “It’s a tough decision, a necessary decision, but when I say the Labour party has changed under my leadership I mean it.”

A Labour spokesperson said: “Keir Starmer has changed Labour so that it is unrecognisable from the party of 2019. We understand that these are highly unusual Candidate Azhar Ali circumstances but it is vital that any candidate put forward by Labour fully represents its aims and values.”

Under electoral law Labour is unable to replace Ali with another candidate as the deadline was February 2. Ali will be represented as the Labour candidate on the ballot paper. If elected he will sit as an Independent MP. In another audio recording, Jones,

looking to regain his Hyndburn seat which he lost in 2019, reportedly refers to “***** Israel” and wrongly states it is illegal for British Jews to fight for the IDF against Hamas and those who do “should be locked up”.

During an astonishing 48 hours, Campaign Against Antisemitism commended Labour for eventually “doing the right thing” over both cases but called for more information.

“It is time for Labour to reveal which other MPs, candidates and councillors were there and why they said nothing about the remarks that were made, and indeed if more such remarks were made,” a spokesperson noted.

“Labour must continue to put a line in the sand and declare that it will not tolerate extremist views. a reason to question Starmer’s promise to tear antisemitism out ‘by its roots’ in Labour and would judge if additional reported comments were worse than reported ones that initially broke.

A Board of Deputies spokesman said: “Any party with a genuine dedication to fighting bigotry cannot support candidates espousing vile conspiracy theories.

Labour have made the right decision in withdrawing support for Mr Ali.” Action Against Discrimination chairman Jonathan Metliss condemned antisemitic and anti-Israel rhetoric emanating from Labour Party election candidates.

Metliss described Ali’s comments “wicked and unconditionally antisemitic” and called for him to be expelled.

“Antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiments remain alive and strong in Labour,” he said.

“The Jewish community should not be fooled by Keir Starmer and others, including members of the Jewish community, when he says it has been rooted Graham Jones out.”

Antisemitic posts reported to CST from X/Twitter were more likely than other platforms to display an ideological strand of antisemitic rhetoric beyond insults and abuse of Jews. Amongst X-based incidents, 648 (92%) contained at least one specific discourse conveying a political, ideological or religious belief on part of the offender, or used conspiracy theories or stereotypes about Jewish people, compared to 423 (73%) of 578 reports of antisemitism that took place via other online services PHOTO: GOV.UK and platforms.

There were a record 2,410 anti-Jewish hate incidents in Greater London, rising 161% from 2022 and a record 555 in Greater Manchester, an increase of 163% on 2022.

Barnet had the highest figure with 864 incidents followed, unusually, by Westminster with 323 due to demonstrations related to October 7. Antisemitic incidents in Westminster took place on the way to or from anti-Israel protests or vigils and rallies for Israelis held hostage in Gaza.

CST recorded for the first time at least one antisemitic incident in all police regions in the UK including 112 in Hertfordshire, 75 Essex, 75 West Yorkshire, 68 Scotland, 63 West Midlands, 57 Northumbria, and 47 in Sussex and Thames Valley.

Hostages plight reaches Super Bowl

Israel’s National Public Diplomacy Directorate released videos ahead of Super Bowl 58 to raise awareness of 136 hostages held in captivity by Hamas.

Kansas City Chiefs overturned a deficit to defeat San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in Las Vegas last Sunday.

The classic event was watched by a record 123 million fans on television and streaming services.

The government advertising agency launched the weekend US campaign for smart TV ads, billboards in major cities and radio broadcasts.

Ads were placed on Paramount, the streaming company broadcasting the game.

Video clips called for the release of 136 hostages. It has been reported the campaign received over 10 million exposures and 100,000 letters were sent to elected officials in the US during the initiative.

CAA welcomes Justice Bill amendments

Campaign Against Antisemitism has welcomed Home Secretary James Cleverly announcing amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill.

CAA’s Demonstration and Event Monitoring Unit has observed protesters disrupting anti-Israel demonstrations by launching fireworks at police officers, desecrating war memorials and preventing the public from travelling.

Since the October 7 terror attack by Hamas there have been over 1,000 protests and vigils, with over 26,000 police officer shifts up to 17 December, and 600 arrests.

Measures will be introduced as amendments at the report stage of the Bill in the House of Commons and apply to England and Wales.

CAA have noted that weekly protests have seen 90% of British Jews state they are avoiding travelling to a city centre where there is a anti-Israel demonstration.

Changes to the bill include desecrating a war memorial punishable by up to three months’ imprisonment and a fine of up to £1,000. It is also illegal for someone to have a pyrotechnic article during a procession or assembly. Offenders could receive a fine of up to £1,000.

Police have new powers to arrest protesters wearing face coverings to conceal their identity. Offenders could receive a fine of up to £1,000 and a month in prison.

The ability to use the right to protest as a reasonable or lawful excuse to commit some crimes would also be removed, protest is not a defence for criminality such as obstructing public highways, locking on, as well as public nuisance.

Cleverly called on Chief Constables to use powers to maintain order as they meet evolving challenges.

He said: “Recent protests have seen a small minority dedicated to causing damage and intimidating the law-abiding majority. The right to protest is paramount in our county, but taking flares to marches to cause damage and disruption is not protest, it is dangerous.

That is why we are giving police the powers to prevent any of this criminality on our streets.”

Stephen Silverman, CAA Director of Investigations and Enforcement said: “For months now, we have been asking for tougher restrictions to be placed on these protests, which have made our urban centres no-go zones for Jews. While the police have failed the Jewish community and law-abiding Londoners, the Government,

to its credit, is listening. These new laws will help address the mob mentality that we have observed in these protests, including the use of fireworks against police officers, desecration of war memorials and severe disruption to travel. There is no justification for such scenes, and now, there will be no legal defence. The people of this country expect the lawlessness on our streets to be brought firmly under control, and with these changes there are now even fewer excuses for police inaction.”

National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Public Order, Chief Constable BJ Harrington, noted: “We welcome the proposal to create new offences relating to war memorials and flares, as well as making it clear that covering your face at a protest to conceal identity is not acceptable.

These changes are in-line with conversations that we have had with the Home Office to ensure that we have the powers that we need to get balance right between the rights of those who wish to protest, and those impacted by them.”

He added: “Thankfully, the use of flares and pyrotechnics at public order events is rare, but they are still extremely dangerous.

banning of these items during protests can only help in our mission to ensure that they take place without anyone coming to any harm. As with all policing powers, these new powers will be used when appropriate, proportionate, and necessary to achieve policing objectives. Policing is not anti-protest, but there is a difference between protest and criminal activism, and we are committed to responding quickly and effectively to activists who deliberately disrupt people’s lives with reckless and criminal acts.”

Andy Marsch, Chief Constable, College of Policing, commented: “The safety of both those protesting and others nearby trying to go about their business is the top priority and our training and guidance focuses on balancing the rights of those protesting with the rights of those affected. The new legislation is now clear that protest is not an excuse for serious disruption. The College will work quickly to provide practical advice, training and support for policing to utilise these new powers.”

In December, CAA gave evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee regarding the policing of protests. CAA CEO Gideon Falter contrasted how police at the March Against Antisemitism in November protected marchers from criminality, at weekly anti-Israel marches they protected the public from criminals among marchers.

Soho theatre shock

The Soho Theatre has banned for life a comic who “aggressively demanded” Jewish members in his audience leave the show for not applauding a Palestinian flag.

Police are investigating the shocking incident at the Paul Currie: Shtoom in London’s West End last Saturday.

Campaign Against Antisemitism is evaluating legal options for people appalled at Currie’s conduct.

Towards the end of the gig Currie encouraged people to stand up and applaud Ukrainian and Palestinian flags. When not everyone participated, according to reports, Currie swore at an Israeli man when they told him he enjoyed the show until the Palestinian flag appeared. The man and his partner left.

“Such appalling actions are unacceptable and have no place on our stages, now or ever,” the theatre said in a statement

after investigating complaints. “We will not be inviting Paul Currie back to perform at our venue.”

A Jewish witness told CAA, Currie swore repeatedly ‘Get the **** out of here’. Audience members then joined in chants of ‘Get out’ and ‘Free Palestine’.

Campaign Against Antisemitism are questioning a court judgement against three anti-Israel protesters. Heba Alhayek, 29, Pauline Ankunda, 26, and Noimutu Olayinka Taiwo, 27, received 12-month conditional discharges at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on terrorism offences.

CAA at the time criticised Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram for an ‘unduly lenient sentence’ as the trio were guilty of terrorism offences. CAA have since revealed Judge Ikram’s social media activity may suggest bias and are exploring legal options, noting there may be grounds to “set aside” the ruling on the basis of “actual or apparent bias”.

CAA are sharing findings with the Crown Prosecution Service to potentially appeal the verdict and are submitting a complaint to the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office. Alhayek and Ankunda attached images of paragliders to their backs, Olayinka attached an image to a placard. They were charged with arousing reasonable suspicion they supported Hamas.

Judge Ikram reportedly said at the time: “You’ve not hidden the fact you were carrying these images. You crossed the line, but it would have been fair to say that emotions ran very high on this issue.

Your lesson has been well learnt. I do not find you were seeking to show any support for Hamas.” He concluded that he had “decided not to punish” the trio.

CAA observed that the court had sent the “worst possible signal to the Jewish community” during surging antisemitism and glorification of terror.

Three things to expect at a Passover Programme Boo! Passover is coming. Does that scare you as much as it scares us? Turns out, Passover doesn’t have to scare and make you mentally exhausted each year. Shocker, I know. We asked our 10.1K members on our Facebook group, “Passover Program Reviews, what they should expect at a Pesach program and the answers were juicy. Let’s get into it.

1.

Food, food, and more food. Oh, did I mention- food? You probably will not want to see or eat food after your ten days stay at a Passover programme. Food is constantly available whether it be the poolside BBQs, breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets, 24/7 tea rooms, in house restaurants and bakeries. There is just a ton of food, ask anyone. You will not be left hungry during your ten days stay; it is just impossible. D.M, from our Facebook group, says that Passover programme travelers should expect “a non-stop conveyor of food, and then more food!” Need we say more? We will, S.L states, “honestly you wake up to food and end your day with more amazing food and dessert.

Not more. You pay for 10 days of amazing Passover food…” You will eat nonstop and that is not an understatement. No more are the days where you must slave in the kitchen cooking and baking for your guests. No more are the days where you have to find replacements that are Kosher for Pesach. No more are the days where you have to dread Passover food. That is all behind you and me because there are Passover programmes. Countless Pesach travelers confidently attest that the food and sweets served during Passover are amazing, if not better than during the year. That is a bold statement, something you can only see and test for yourself.

Let’s talk about the types of food that is

generally served. From breakfast buffets involving warm waffles, fluffy bread, crispy crackers, airy pancakes, all types of flavorful eggs, fresh fruits, refreshing smoothies, creamy milkshakes, a gorgeous array of cheeses, sweet cakes, and cookies, and so on. From dairy or meat lunch buffets including savory pizza, crunchy salads, delicious sushi, flaky fish, juicy lamb, veal, pastrami, turkey, and chicken. To dinner buffets stocked with even more meat, there is nothing that the buffets won’t have. You will need to purchase a new wardrobe afterwards, or better yet bring stretchy clothes with you.

Some programmes have themed dinners with different cuisines to spice things up. No one wants leftovers for ten days, variety is expected. Let’s move onto the tearoom, no there is not just tea. There are decadent and rich desserts, complex teas, aromatic coffee, sugary confections, exotic chocolates, sweet fruits, and more so that you’re fully prepared for the rare occasion of being hungry. I think that about covers it.

Entertainment, available for both kids and adults. You are going to enjoy your Passover and be entertained.

Whether it be talented chazanim, world famous singers, amazing DJs, mentalists, comedians, amazing speakers, scholars in residence, influencers, chefs, and so on. Each person is hired to make sure that you are having a good time and enjoying yourself. Chazanim are there to beautify your Chag and make davening time something to look forward to. Singers bring music to your ears and glorify Passover during Chol HaMoed or seder night. DJs, mentalists, and comedians there to amuse you on Chol HaMoed and truly enjoy your experience. Speakers and

scholars in residence to either educate, entertain, or spiritually uplift your Passover. We cannot forget about the kid’s camp and teen programming that takes place as well. Parents want to go on a vacation, not another trip where they must constantly entertain their children and never have a break. With babysitting and a kid’s programme, parents can now take a breather and either relax by the many pools or spa with a frosty cocktail in hand. Everyone deserves to benefit and indulge in a relaxing vacation. As E.M says, people should expect “good entertainment, lots of coffee so we can stay awake for all the activities.” Make sure to fill that cup of coffee up to the brim so that you don’t have FOMO missing out on the delightful activities.

You get what you pay for, as is true with anything in life. Don’t expect a luxurious and lavish Passover programme if you aren’t willing to pay what is standard. It is worthwhile to mention that U.S. based programs are widely different from Europe based. But that comes with its own pros and cons. European programs are usually cheaper than the U.S due to the cost of staff being lower and hotels are often cheaper. European programs are not going according to the U.S currency, making their programs of lesser cost. However, the flights may be more costly if you’re flying to Dubai or Greece, as opposed to New York or Florida. Don’t be upset when the entertainment isn’t top tier or there isn’t food available constantly, if you haven’t paid the big bucks. This is extremely significant to keep in mind when booking your Pesach stay. Go over what is important to your family, whether it be food, programming, entertainment, location,

weather, or hotel. Once you have your options reduced, it is easier to plan and pick which program you would like to attend. Keep in mind that European programs primarily consist of those who live closer to Europe and may not be an English-speaking crowd. L.W speaks out on this topic saying that often European programs are “simple, unlike some of the U.S programs I’ve been on where a lot of emphasis is put on food and entertainment, this program (and I’m told European programs in general) are far more basic (which is reflected in the price difference). You will not be hungry, but you will also not have access to food 24/7.

If you’ve gone to more lavish programs, be prepared to shift your mindset and manage expectations.” With all that said, European programs may work for one family and their budget, and not yours.

Which is why it is key to acknowledge how price makes a difference when it comes to Pesach program planning.

There is a tremendous number of things that you should expect at Passover programs. What better way to understand each expectation than experiencing one yourself. You can do that today! Before you mention how Pesach programs are extremely expensive, just know that that isn’t always true. There are programs for all different price ranges and budgets, but that does directly reflect how luxurious versus modest a program may be. Sir Keir - Expel him Dear Editor

AAD is appalled and shocked by these latest antisemitic and anti-Israel comments emanating from the Labour Party candidate at the forthcoming Rochdale by-election. Azhar Ali’s comments are wicked and unconditionally antisemitic.

It demonstrates that the Jewish community must remain extremely vigilant and careful in the face of this antisemitism, which replicates the behaviour and nature of the Labour Party under former leader Jeremy Corbyn.

AAD welcomes the Labour Party withdrawal of support for the Rochdale by-election candidate, having first backed him despite his antisemitic and anti-Israel slurs.

Having said that, it cannot understand why he has not been expelled from the Labour Party forthwith. Likewise, former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn had the Labour Party whip withdrawn from him in the House of Commons where he now sits as an Independent MP but was not expelled from the Labour Party.

This is a clear indication that antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiments remain alive and strong in the Labour Party and the UK Jewish Community should not be fooled by Sir Keir Starmer and others (including members of the Jewish Community) when he says that it has been “rooted out” as it hasn’t.

AAD calls on Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party to expel Azhar Ali forthwith from the Labour Party and for the police and Crown Prosecution Service to prosecute him accordingly for incitement to racial hatred and hate crimes. Likewise, it calls on the Jewish Community bodies including the Board of Deputies to condemn the behaviour of Azhar Ali and to come out and unconditionally support such action.

I see no evidence of anything being done by the British government to make any progress or help Israel.

Instead, his foreign secretary Lord Cameron merely condemns Israel’s intention to proceed against Hamas in the Rafah area and reiterates the statement that there must be a two-state solution, without specifying who precisely would be a credible party in Gaza. There is no praise for the IDF in rescuing the latest two emaciated hostages from the Rafah area, which only goes to show that Rafah is where so many Hamas terrorists and Israeli hostages are located.

Without Hamas or the allegedly innocent citizens of Gaza revealing the whereabouts and releasing the remaining hostages, what choice does Israel have?

Why can’t they see the facts of this war, as they are so ready to do in the Ukraine war, where they are assisting Ukraine?

Why can’t they be fair-minded like the brave author and commentator Douglas Murray who ought to be commemorated in Yad Vashem as a righteous gentile?

Why can’t they be like the great Winston Churchill and his Allies when they defeated the Nazis which led to the establishment of a completely new Germany?

Since the first (1920) Arab riots the Palestine problem is the Arab community rejects the idea of any Jewish independence in any part of Palestine - and nobody has been able to talk nor force them on this. While the West feeds them UNWRA and other foreign aid they sit back and refuse - which they could not if we UN taxpayers’ stopped the aid.

Given the Younger Wm Pitt’s, “British policy is British trade,” let us ask our MP’s to question Lord Chipping Norton - translates, “Market North Town” - what trade does he and his Camel Corps expect to gather from Palestine - if any, because it has no economy apart from foreign aid.

Dear Editor I have lived in the Gants Hill area most of my life. I’m 68 now. When I go past Gants Hill centre and see on most lamp posts Palestine Flags day after day and at the top of Beehive Lane the same, they must have a group of young guys with long ladders doing this at night, my point is what happened to the the young Jewish Youth? Where is the organisation of groups with a ladder taking down the flags in a popular Jewish area? Is it that the successful parents who handed down their business to our youth which forgot our hunger and where we are and now what we are up against? Are we like sheep, too scared now allowing this happen in our communities day after day?

Every night, we need just 1 ladder and 4 people who will remove the flags. We seem to have no great organisation in areas that need them.

We need the help now before it gets worse.

And it will get worse.

Solidarity trip to Israel

London School of Jewish Studies’ Chief Executive, Joanne Greenaway, joined a global delegation of 32 education leaders on a four-day solidarity mission to Israel.

Participants reflected on the Gaza war and considered emerging issues in Israel’s education, Jewish identity and peoplehood.

They examined proactive strategies to address issues in schools and other educational settings.

The group included leaders of federations, academic institutions and umbrella education bodies from 12 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, Australia and the USA. “The trip gave us the chance to meet some remarkable people who shared their stories with us,” said Joanne. “What was surprising was their resilience and determination to rebuild, despite all their suffering; it was really inspiring. I came home with a renewed sense of mission and of the critical importance of what we are doing to

deepen Jewish engagement.”

The trip highlighted the importance of connecting people of all ages to their Jewish identity and how it’s not been more pressing to Israel.

Participants saw how vibrant, relevant education and excellent teachers deepen knowledge, links tradition and love for Israel and the Jewish people worldwide.

Joanne said that delegates realised how Israel and diaspora are affected. The way forward is through partnership and constant communication.

“October 7 was a low point in our story but it does not define us,” she said. “We are part of an extraordinary people and together we will build a stronger future. In order to do so, education is the greatest key to our security, but we must choose how we tell our story.”

LSJS are offering people the chance to join a three-day trip to Israel March12-14 to meet educators, activists, soldiers and people affected by atrocities of 7 October.

Aside from volunteering and showing support by visiting Israel, participants will meet expert educators for an in-depth understanding of the impact of 7 October, war, and its significance on the future.

The project’s activities have already garnered significant participation and enthusiasm. Notably, 150 women attended a shiur at Norrice Lea synagogue, organised in collaboration with the Rebbetzens of the United Synagogue. South London Forum at Nightingale House

JNF UK Green Sunday charity telethon

Together with Jewish Care, Nightingale Hammerson was delighted to host the South London and Southern Counties Forum at Nightingale House on 14th February 2024.

The South London Community Support Service, which is funded by both charities, provides a lifeline of support for community members with care needs. This service is led by Stephen Ison, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience of how to navigate the healthcare system.

The forum was attended by members of the community who were able to learn more about the service provision at Nightingale House and included a tour of the care home. The event also raised awareness of the care and community support offered by Nightingale Hammerson and Jewish Care.

There was also the opportunity for an open forum, where community members shared their thoughts and opinions about the future of the care support for the Jewish community living south of the Thames River.

This Green Sunday, JNF UK is raising funds to establish a Memorial Forest, to commemorate those who were tragically murdered on October 7. The campaign aims to create a meaningful and lasting legacy, honouring the memory of the victims who we have lost, but are not forgotten.

The Muslim vote coalition OPINION PIECE

The attempt to present any community as monolithic is not just simplistic; it’s a disservice to the rich tapestry of human diversity. Enter the “The Muslim Vote” coalition, a brazen attempt to corral the Muslim community into a singular voting bloc. With a bright pink website, tables with various statistics, and a collage of logos representing its constituent members, “The Muslim Vote” coalition wants you to bestow it with unfounded clout.

But one must ask: why the push for uniformity? Are we to believe that the multitude of voices within the Muslim community can be neatly packaged into a one-size-fits-all political agenda?

The absurdity of such an endeavour is self-evident.

The organisations lending their support to “The Muslim Vote” coalition present a confounding spectacle, akin to a bizarre circus act with no discernible ringmaster.

From the Muslim councils of Scotland and Wales or Prevent Watch (yes, an anti-deradicalisation organisation), the seemingly disparate affiliations seem to be united by

one common denominator: a disdain for Israel. They’ve simply rallied to partake in a collective gripe session against the Jewish state, which makes one wonder if there’s anything more to this coalition than its overt anti-Israel agenda.

If “The Muslim Vote” coalition insists on treating the Muslim community as a monolith, then one cannot help but inquire about the standards by which they measure representation and advocacy.

Who appointed them as the mouthpiece for the multifaceted Muslim community?

And what of the myriad perspectives and beliefs that exist within this demographic?

The presumption of speaking on behalf of an entire community without its explicit consent is not just presumptuous; it’s antithetical to the principles of democratic representation.

Diversity within any demographic is not just a matter of optics but a fundamental reality that shapes individual perspectives, priorities, and political affiliations. To homogenise the Muslim vote, by Muslim groups themselves, is to ignore the vast spectrum of ideological, cultural, and socio-economic differences that exist within the community.

Additionally, the politicisation of religion by “The Muslim Vote” coalition raises

troubling questions about the role of faith in public discourse. While religious identity can inform one’s values and world-view, it should not serve as a sole determinant of political affiliation or allegiance. The attempt to mobilise voters along religious lines undermines the secular foundation of democratic governance and threatens to erode the principle of equal representation for all citizens.

But perhaps the most egregious aspect of the “The Muslim Vote” coalition is its unabashed attempt to influence UK politics and steer it in an explicitly Muslim direction. Do we truly want UK politics beholden to the whims of a single interest group, particularly one whose ideology may not align with liberal democratic values? The website’s rhetoric of “devolved decision-making” and a focus on “pro-Palestine” candidates reeks of sectarianism and exclusion. While advocacy for specific causes is a fundamental aspect of democracy, the attempt to wield collective political power in pursuit of narrow sectarian interests undermines the democratic principles of equality and pluralism.

Moving on to their methodology, one cannot help but chuckle ruefully at the coalition’s decision to assess politicians based on their stance on the Israel-Hamas

conflict. Really? Is this the litmus test for political alignment now? By reducing complex geopolitical issues to a binary assessment of keeping Hamas in power, the coalition not only oversimplifies the conflict but also perpetuates a dangerous narrative that equates criticism of Hamas with hostility towards the Muslim community.

The emergence of “The Muslim Vote” coalition raises questions about the future of UK politics and representation in a diverse and pluralistic society. Do we wish to see UK politics mired in the quagmire of identity politics, or do we uphold the principles of free and open debate, underpinned by democratic institutions that prioritise equality and fairness for all? Do we wish to see UK politics bifurcated according to allegiance to the pro-Palestine or pro-Hamas cause?

The choice is clear: we must resist the allure of sectarianism and embrace the complexity of our shared humanity. Only then can we build a future that is truly inclusive, equitable, and just for all.

Dear Rabbi I read with interest your column last week about G-d, Divine Providence, prayer, bribery etc. It was definitely different and gave me a lot to mull over. There was much discussion at our Friday night table (there often is with some of your thought provoking responses). I tend to stress a lot over things. If I understand you correctly, my stressing is a futile exercise. I should be more relaxed believing that G-d knows my situation and will help me. Is there a way to avoid or better manage stress from a Jewish perspective?

Tommy Dear Tommy To be sure, sometimes stress is a chemical reaction and that would require therapy, sometimes medication etc. So, a qualification before I answer is, I am not responding regarding that sort of stress. I will refer specifically to the general stress we tend to often endure when faced with particular situations. Some people stress before there’s even stress to stress about.

Then they stress about stressing over stress that doesn’t need to be stressed

about. That can be quite stressful.

Research shows that often, if not most of the time, it is not the stress itself that is the problem, rather the perception of the stress. The perception and interpretation of events is called the stressor – that which causes the stress – and that is infinitely more critical than the external causes that bring a person to stress.

So stress begins with my perception of a situation. There is a verse in Psalms, “One who trusts in G-d will be encompassed by Divine grace.” The Baal Shem Tov famously explained, “If you trust in G-D, thinking, ‘if everything in this world comes from G-d and G-d cares about His creations,’ then you will be encompassed

by Divine love and kindness.”

In other words, if you put your faith in G-d then G-d puts His faith in you. If you believe that G-d got you to it and He will get you through it, then that’s exactly how it can happen for you. So much so, says the Baal Shem Tov, that things which were not necessarily written in the cards to happen to you, will come about simply because you thought in those positive ways.

So, from a Jewish standpoint, when a human being realises that G-d, who is all benevolent, is watching over me, then

I have a different perspective on life.

If I recognise that G-d is watching over me, at this juncture, during this problem, in the face of this test, then I have a completely different perception, thereby limiting the stressor and by extension the stress.

This is in a nutshell and there’s much more to be said, but contemplate this the next time you find your stress levels rising.

DID I MAKE A MISTAKE? Dear Rabbi I’ve been married ten years. It wasn’t a typical “shidduch” situation as we found one another (not something typical in our families).

Life was good but now with busy jobs and three young children, I feel we have grown apart. We argue more and I am just not feeling the same as I did during the first years of my marriage. Did I make a mistake and just “fall in love?” Would it have been different had I pursued a shadchan approach? I am not one to go to a marriage counsellor so please don’t suggest it. Maybe this is typical in frum homes, with shul, shiurim, kids, work and all the usual rigmarole of a religious Jewish lifestyle.

No one said marriage is easy. It’s not.

It requires constant work and effort on both your parts. As you have hit something of a crisis point you have to urgently determine how you are going to choose your hard in your marriage: It’s hard to swallow your pride and apologise after an argument. It’s also hard to just stay silent and disconnected from the one you love. It’s hard to prioritise moments of connection with your spouse when

you’re busy with work, your children, the running of your home. It’s also hard to feel lonely and just navigate life like roommates fleetingly interacting with one another. It’s hard to control your reactions when triggered and mad. It’s also hard to observe the impact you’ve made and hurt you caused your partner with your reaction. It’s hard to sit down and address together some of the real underlying issues or concerns. It’s also hard to realise there’s a growing divide and emotional distance. It’s hard to be loving and affectionate during stressful times or a busy season. It’s also hard to get to a point where you both feel unloved and unappreciated. It’s hard to hear your spouse out when you disagree and see things very differently. It’s also hard to realise they don’t open up to you anymore as they remain guarded.

In relationships your options are, taking the hard path of engaging in uncomfortable conversations, acknowledging the need to change and embarking on a journey of personal growth. Or, you can take the hard path of just unresolved conflicts, sweeping more and more under the carpet and creating increasing emotional distance.

The good news is, you get to choose your hard. Good luck!

Where G-d Dwells

This weeks portion of Terumah introduces a new concept: a sanctuary, a tabernacle, designed to create a space for G-d in the world.

But how and why would we be commanded to create a physical space for G-d? Shlomo HaMelech asked at the dedication of the first Temple: “But will G-d really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain You. How much less this temple I have built!” (Melachim I 8:27) Interestingly, while the Tabernacle is the predecessor to the Beit HaMikdash, the Temple, there is a fundamental difference between the two: The Temple stood in a fixed place at the centre of the Jewish universe, in Jerusalem, whereas the Mishkan (the Tabernacle) travelled with the Jewish people without a set location.

Kook was once asked why a Jew could travel through the Sinai Desert when he might walk on the site where the Mishkan once stood. He responds that the sanctity of the Mishkan was temporary; when the Jewish people moved there was no lasting sanctity to the places where it once stood.

This is in direct contrast to the Temple on whose direct site all the authorities agree no Jew can traverse today.

Rashi suggests that the commandment to build a Mishkan resulted from the sin of the Golden Calf. When the Jewish people felt the need to create a physical manifestation of G-d’s presence as a reminder that G-d is with them, always.

So G-d gave us a Mishkan, a place that would travel with us. It was less about where it stood than about where we stood. A call to the Jewish people to create holy space wherever we are. For a nation destined to wander, this was the secret to our survival. The predecessor of the Jewish synagogue.

The synagogue is called a beit knesset, which means a house not of worship but of gathering. The Hebrew word kanes means to collect or gather, as Esther suggests to Mordechai in the Purim story: “Lech knos et kol haYehudim…, Go and gather all the Jews…”

Judaism teaches us we can create an environment of sanctity that can impact us by gathering together, and we create this space not by where we are, but by who we are.

And for thousands of years of exile, we created our synagogue spaces wherever we are, and more than we maintained the synagogue, the synagogue space maintained us. And we learned that what we can create alone will never match what we can create together.

The Beit HaMikdash (Temple in Jerusalem) was designed to create an environment the way it was meant to be, and the Mishkan was designed to teach us that we could start working on creating

1st Aliya (Kohen) – Shemot 25:1-16

G-d tells Moshe to ask the Jews for voluntary offerings towards the construction and functioning of the Mishkan (Tabernacle). The materials needed are gold, silver and copper; turquoise, purple and scarlet wool; linen, goat hair, dyed ram skins, skins of the tachash animal, acacia wood, oil, specific spices and particular precious stones (for placing in the Kohen Gadol’s garments).

G-d then instructs Moshe about how to make different features of the Mishkan: The Aron (ark) was made from acacia wood, plated with gold on both the inside and outside, and with a gold Zer (crown) around the top. It had four gold

rings attached to it, two on each side, with a gold-plated wooden stave left permanently between each pair of rings, in order to carry the Aron. The Tablets of the Ten Commandments were placed in the aron.

Point to Consider: What is the deeper message of the Aron being plated with gold not just on the outside, but also the inside, even though the inside was not visible? (25:11)

2nd Aliya (Levi) – 25:17-30

The Kaporet (cover) of the Aron was made of pure gold, with two Cherubs moulded on top, facing one another and with their wings touching. The Shulchan (table) was made from gold-plated acacia

wood, with a gold Zer (crown) on its Misgeret (lid). It had rings and staves to carry it, like the Aron. The Lechem Hapanim (show bread) was placed on it.

3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 25:31-26:14

The Menorah was hammered from one piece of pure gold, with seven lamps. The Mishkan had ten Yiriyot (curtains), made of linen and patterned wool, with golden hooks joining them together.

The Ohel (tent), draped over the Mishkan, was made of 11 curtains of goat hair, with a further double Michseh (cover) on top, one made from dyed ram skins, the other from Tachash skins.

such environments wherever we were.

This is why the verse commanding us to build such a sanctuary alludes to this : “Ve’asu li mikdash ve’shachanti be’tocham, They shall make a sanctuary for Me, and I will dwell in them (be’tocham).”

The verse should have said “I will dwell in it” not “I will dwell in them.”

The Torah teaches us that Hashem does not dwell in a building; Hashem lies deep inside each and every one of us; the Mishkan and the synagogue are just a taste of that experience as it is meant to be.

The True Value of the Journey

In our previous article, we continued exploring the deep and inspiring ideas relating the importance of the Jewish People’s journey through the Midbar. After all, the Torah doesn’t waste a single word; every word has infinite meaning. Thus, if the Torah went out of its way to mention every single place that Klal Yisrael encamped along their long journey through the Midbar, there must be a fundamental message that the Torah is trying to teach us. We began our discussion by emphasizing the importance of each step in any journey and then developed a deeper understanding of the purpose of a goal and the importance of the journey itself.

We ended our previous article with a powerful question: The Gemara (Shabbos 88b) describes Moshe Rabbeinu’s journey as he ascended Har Sinai to receive the Torah. Upon his arrival on top, the malachim began complaining to Hashem, claiming that man has no right to receive the Torah. In responding to their arguments, Moshe’s claim for why the Jewish People are deserving of the Torah focuses on the weaknesses and challenges of human beings, not their perfection. He emphasizes that we are limited, imperfect beings with a yetzer hara, prone to mistakes and jealousy. Why is this a mark in our favor?

The simple answer to this question is that Moshe wasn’t trying to show humanity’s greatness; he was only trying to clarify why human beings need the guidance of Torah, and how the Torah was more applicable to the Jewish People than malachim. There is, however, a much deeper layer here as well.

TWO FORMS OF PERFECTION There are two different types, or aspects, of perfection. The first is static perfection (sheleimus), where something is, has been, and always will be absolutely perfect. Such a being does not struggle, has no conflicting wills, and never fails.

The second type of perfection is more nuanced, and in some sense, even more powerful. This is the aspect of becoming perfect (hishtalmus), where a being is created imperfect and has the ability to become, evolve, grow, and work to achieve perfection. This second type of perfection comes with great risk, as the struggle to become perfect will inevitably include moments of failure, difficulty, and even hopelessness.

Moshe showed the malachim that while angels are created as static, perfect beings — the first form of perfection — humanity is capable of becoming perfect, through hard work and free will. The Torah contains infinitely deep spiritual

wisdom, and the malachim knew that humanity would never be able to understand its depths on the level that they themselves were capable of. They therefore claimed that the Torah should not be given to humanity but be kept by those who could properly grasp its depths. Moshe countered that the Torah’s true purpose is to be both a reflection of higher truth and a gateway for humanity in their journey toward becoming perfect.

The Torah and its mitzvos provide us with guidance, refine us, and help us become more and more perfect. The Torah helps us conquer our yetzer hara and overcome our weaknesses. (“Barasi yetzer hara, barasi lo Torah tavlin — I created [the] yetzer hara, I created for it Torah [as a] spice”; Kiddushin 30b.) It is therefore irrelevant for malachim, as malachim are already perfect and have no free will.

(The Nefesh Hachaim explains that angels understand reality with such a crystal-clear lens that it is virtually impossible for them to do anything but operate in line with the truth. While they do have a very limited sense of free will, doing something wrong as an angel would be akin to walking into a fire. They may have the free choice to do so, but the scalding hot flames are more than enough to stop them; see Rav Tzadok Hakohen, Pri Tzaddik, Kedushas Shabbos 7; Ramchal, Daas Tevunos 72.)

Rav Tzadok explains that this is why Hashem told Moshe to hold on to the Kisei Hakavod. True kavod is something that must be chosen, not forced. One gives true honor to something or someone that he approves of, values, and associates with truth and perfection.

Malachim cannot give true honor to Hashem, because they cannot help but honor Hashem. It is impossible for them not to acknowledge Hashem and the truth of reality. Humanity, however, is capable of giving true honor to Hashem, because we are capable of choosing not to honor Him. Only because we have free will and can choose to ignore the truths of reality can we also choose to acknowledge Hashem as our Creator and root source. It is because we are limited and fallible that we can achieve a unique form of greatness: that of becoming perfect (hishtalmus). This is why Hashem told Moshe to grab onto the Kisei Hakavod; it is the place that represents our ability to give kavod to Hashem as it is the “place” in the spiritual world where Hashem reveals Himself to the created world. (A throne is where a king sits and makes himself available and seen by his people, outside of the privacy of his hidden inner chambers. In the same sense, the Kisei Hakavod represents how Hashem reveals and expresses Himself to the world, allowing us to know and experience Him.) It is also the place within the spiritual world that is rooted even higher than the makom (place) of malachim. This is why Hashem tells Moshe to “grab” onto the

Kisei Hakavod; it is the very concept of maasim (actions) that reflect humanity’s superiority to malachim. Only humanity can choose to perform physical mitzvos in the physical world, and our ability to be Hashem’s sheluchim (messengers) in the physical world is what makes humanity superior to the perfection of malachim. Our greatness lies not in our static perfection, but in our ability to become perfect.

BRIS MILAH A fascinating illustration of this principle is the exchange between Rabbi Akiva and Turnusrufus, as described in the Midrash (Midrash Tanchuma, Tazria 5). Turnusrufus questions the mitzvah of bris milah, asking Rabbi Akiva whether he believes that man is more perfect once he undergoes circumcision than he was when Hashem originally created him. In other words, how can man become more perfect through a human act than he was when Hashem originally created him?

Rabbi Akiva explains that this is exactly what he believes — that the human act of circumcision elevates man to a higher level than he was when originally created.

Turnusrufus could not understand this concept, and at first glance, this seems to be a tremendously controversial statement. However, Rabbi Akiva understood that Hashem creates us imperfect to give us the opportunity, ability, and responsibility to perfect ourselves. That is the true perfection of humanity.

(Bris milah is also the ultimate paradigm of human spiritual growth in a physical and limited world. We take the most physical and potentially animalistic organ and use it to transcend, connecting to the infinite.

Another example of this dichotomy is the relationship between Torah She’bichsav and Torah She’baal Peh. Many Jewish thinkers, quoting Chazal, describe the unique relationship between Torah She’baal Peh and Torah She’bichsav as follows: • Torah She’bichsav is static and already perfect; it was given to us directly from Hashem Himself, and human beings have no part in its creation.

• Torah She’baal Peh, however, is a constant work in progress, built through human effort.

Torah She’bichsav was given to us complete, requiring no further development, whereas, through human effort, Klal Yisrael has developed Torah She’baal Peh throughout the centuries. Torah She’bichsav thus represents static perfection, while Torah She’baal Peh represents the human process of becoming perfect.

CREATING YOUR TORAH Our higher root is static perfection, but our mission in this world is to work through the process of becoming our higher, true selves, struggling to transform our imperfection into greatness.

This is exactly the theme of the Gemara (Niddah 30b) that we have discussed several times before, which states that while in the womb, a malach teaches us kol haTorah kulah, revealing all the deepest truths of reality. Right before we are born, we lose access to that transcendent Torah. The goal of life is to enter this world imperfect and rebuild all that you once were in the womb. However, this time it will be real, because you have built it yourself. Only by overcoming challenge and difficulty, only by asserting your willpower, can you fulfill your true potential.

In essence, our entire life is a story of becoming — of journeying toward our original, higher, and true self.

THE JOURNEY TOWARDS GREATNESS We all traverse through the journey of life, trying to grasp the ultimate objective truth as well as fulfill our own personal purpose within that higher truth. As the Torah is teaching us, every step of our journey is of ultimate importance. But more important still is the necessity to be a journeyer, to continuously grow through life. We are here to achieve greatness, and living without a higher “why” is not truly living. We are the unique creation of Hashem that has been placed in a confusing and dark world, in a state of confusion, with the mission of becoming perfect. Find your unique mission, embrace the struggle, and head toward the infinite while enjoying every step of the process. .

The Jewish people were now offered an opportunity to create a type of home for Hashem to rest His Shechina in!

Hashem teaches Moshe about all the materials that would be needed such as wood, gold, silver, copper, wool, dyed wool, flax, oils and spices. Everyone could contribute as much as they

wanted and who would not want to be part of so great a project?!

All the fine details were shown to Moshe, the three boxes for the Aron, the way to make the Menorah, the Shulchan and the outer Mizbeach. All this was to be covered by beautiful coverings made from a special animal, the Tachash.

Miracles would be seen constantly at the Mishkan, with the bread staying fresh all week being one such miracle.

The Mishkan was comprised of three sections, the Kodesh Kadashim that only the Kohen Gadol could enter, the Kodesh, and the Courtyard. It must have been a beautiful sight to see

and we dream of the day that we will see its successor - the Beit Hamikdash, built once again.

The Mishkan was like a home to Hashem, and each of our homes can also act as a place for Hashem to rest His Shechina.

Why has the quality of the export packing for my Aliyah shipment to Israel suddenly become so much more important?

The quick answer is that more people are likely to hand it!!!

Why?? you ask – well, just recently, Israeli Customs have taken a much closer look at what is in the containers and it would appear that a very large proportion of imports into Israel are being inspected for – wait for it – drugs!! I have absolutely no idea what is the reason behind this. My company has never knowingly shipped any drugs anywhere and our containers have never previously been inspected for drugs. This week, I have had two containers stopped and searched (obviously with nothing in any way linked to drugs found). But the searches are aimed at ALL the imports not just us and we have only had 2 cartons opened in the first container and they were then sealed by Customs and replaced in the container. Other shippers have not been so lucky!!

So there is good news and there is bad news. We as a company are totally honest as to what is in a shipment that we take to Israel. We comply with all the laws and regulations and we have a clean 45+ years’ history. So, provided we handle ALL the packing then we know that there is no contraband included in your shipment and we know that the packing will withstand an extra lot of handling and you can sleep easy.

The only bad news is that with these inspections, you will be charged for the inspection and for any storage of your shipment in the port whilst it awaits inspection. The charges vary according to the depth of inspection. Very often it is just an X-ray but it could be a full container for a few thousand shekels – hopefully not, but be prepared and ensure that you use Stephen Morris Shipping for that high quality packing.

The queen of clubs was led at the both tables. At the first table declarer won the trick with dummy’s ace of clubs and, without any apparent thought, cashed the ace of trumps at trick two. The revealed 0:5 break (UGH) and this now called for desperate measures. So declarer ruffed dummy’s six of clubs low in hand then played ace and another diamond, won by East’s king.

East exited with a low heart. Playing a club would have allowed declarer to make his seven of trumps and his contract. Declarer won the trick with the king of hearts and exited with his last diamond, taken by West with the ten as East threw the queen of hearts. West played the queen of diamonds and East threw his remaining club on it.

Declarer ruffed this with the seven of trumps and then played the king of hearts. Alas, East ruffed this for the third defensive trick and still had four trumps to declarer’s three.

So, the contract failed by one trick.

At the other table, declarer was more experienced, After winning the ace of clubs, he asked himself “Can it ever hurt me to ruff a club at trick two?” As his answer to this was “No”, he did just that. Next he led the five of trumps to dummy’s ace. When the 0:5 break was only now revealed, declarer ruffed dummy’s remaining club with his seven of trumps. This ensured he would make six trump tricks. So, when the ace-king of hearts and the ace of diamonds were not ruffed, declarer had ten tricks.
