The Stamford Hill Jewish community is on high alert following attacks on Jewish-owned shops. The latest violence comes as Community Security Trust launches its annual survey of the Jewish community today and Campaign Against Antisemitism compiles a survey of hate incidents. Businesses and residents in Stamford Hill have experienced a spate of attacks which police are investigating. The shocking incident saw £25,000 worth of damage to the shop fronts. Images uploaded online appear to show shops boarded up after windows were smashed in. The incident was reported by Stamford Hill Shomrim, the Jewish volunteer neighbourhood organisation last Sunday. Shomrim on a data-sharing agreement. A CAA spokesperson said, “Violence against identifiably Jewish people and their property is becoming endemic in Stamford Hill. Every week there is another series of instances of abuse, assaults and property damage against the Jewish community. We continue to work in partnership with Stamford Hill Shomrim to combat this vile hatred, but it is time for the police to finally step up as well and protect Jews who are repeatedly being targeted and terrorised seemingly without end.” Regarding the disturbing episode, a CST spokesman noted, “These are an extremely disturbing series of incidents affecting the Jewish community and it is important that anybody with information contacts the police or, if they prefer, they can pass on their

It is vital all incidents are reported to CST and the police, so the perpetrators of these disgraceful incidents can be identified and hopefully brought to justice.” CST recently ran a training course for the Charedi community combining self-defence and security awareness with a counter-terrorism section from the Metropolitan Police. “Antisemitism affects all parts of our community, but it lands disproportionately on the most visible parts,” a spokesman said. Responses from Jews around the UK will enable CAA to have up to date information on institutions including the police, Crown Prosecution Service and Ofsted. Results will be published in its annual ‘Antisemitism Barometer’

The National Jewish Assembly is to hold a debate on the building a Holocaust Memorial near Parliament on September 11th. The Zoom discussion will be held for NJA members who will be able to speak in the debate. Gary Mond, NJA Chairman, said “This is a very important issue for the Jewish community and fully worthy of a comprehensive debate. Moreover, it should be a debate amongst friends. “I have the greatest of respect for those advocating both for and against locating a Holocaust memorial and learning centre near Parliament. It will also be helpful if those in positions of power who play any role in the final decision take note as to what is said.” The NJA will remain neutral in the debate. Member deadline to apply to participate: September 9th.

AAD blast Burnley over Lord decision BY DAVID SAFFER
Action Against Antisemitism has blasted Burnley FC for not renaming the Bob Lord Stand. Lord, Burnley’s former chairman, made antisemitic comments in the 1970’s at a Variety Club dinner. The Championship club held discussions with Jewish groups and advisers during a six-month investigation but decided the club did not need to take further action. A club spokesperson said Burnley had officially adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism. Club Chairman, Alan Pace, said Burnley would continue taking a “proactive stance” against all forms of discrimination and hate crime. “Adopting the IHRA definition in full is an important step going forwards and ultimately proves clarity across football on the language and actions of staff, players, supporters, and everyone associated with the game,” he said. “As a custodian of Burnley, I strongly believe everyone should feel safe and welcome, whether watching or attending a football game.” Despite the IHRA decision, AAD chairman Metliss criticised the club. “This is yet another example of antisemitism in football not being treated sufficiently seriously,” he observed. “Burnley
FC were asked to change the name of the stand in the light of the anti Semitic comments of former chairman Lord but they have declined. This is an unacceptable and disappointing response.” The Lord probe followed three Burnley supporters being arrested after video footage emerged of them appearing to perform Nazi salutes during match versus Tottenham Hotspur on 15 May. And it followed the recent refusal of the Crown Prosecution Service to prosecute West Ham supporters who directed antisemitic abuse towards a Jewish passenger on a flight to Eindhoven last season. The Bob Lord stand Metliss noted, “These are, sadly, examples of failure in the fight tackling it in the present and deterring it against antisemitism in football and cer- in the future are most important. Israel hails historic agreement with Romania BY LEAH WAXLER
Romanian Holocaust survivors living in Israel are now recognised as eligible for pensions. Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Social Equality Minister Merav Cohen announced a historic agreement with the Holocaust Survivors' Rights Authority and Romanian national insurance agency. The agreement provides an orderly way to submit Merav Cohen appropriate claims. Lapid is the son of a Holocaust survivor and welcomed the move. “The State of Israel needs to do everything so that Holocaust survivors may live here in the country with the dignity they deserve,” he said. “We are correcting a longstanding injustice. This is our basic obligation as a society, to see that survivors live out their lives in the best way possible.” Cohen noted, “Not many years remain
to serve survivors of the Holocaust. We are working with a sense of mission and urgency to do everything in our power to improve their economic situation and develop services for them.” Israel finalised agreements with a number of countries to financially benefit survivors last year. The government also allocated NIS 300 million in the state budget to increase support payments for the poorest Holocaust PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA survivors. “These steps have enabled Holocaust survivors to increase their monthly incomes,” noted Cohen. “We will continue to act on behalf of Holocaust survivors and the older population in Israel.” The Centre for Holocaust Survivors' Organisations in Israel, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Romanian Embassy in Israel and Israeli Ambassador to Romania David Saranga coordinated the agreement.
Fringe festival ‘Yemenite’ scandal
Israeli performers shine a light on the ‘Yemenite Children Affair’ of the 1950s at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this month. the abhorrent Nazi sign in the Tottenham clash. Tottenham’s official Twitter confirmed the club were aiding police with enquiries. The late former chairman and local businessman ran a chain of butcher shops before becoming club chairman. At the dinner Lord said, “We have to stand up against a move to get soccer on the cheap by the Jews who run TV.” This prompted a number of guests to leave early and a complaint from Bryan Cowgill, Head of BBC Television Sport, and his television counterpart, Bill Ward, PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA to Sir Andrew Stephen, Chairman of the Football Association, and Len Shipman, President of the Football League, Lord later issued a partial apology, stating, “If I have hurt anybody’s feelings. I apologise.” Burnley FC Supporters Group appeared to offer a different view of Lord’s remark. They said in a statement, “What Lord said was unpleasant, but it was one incident. He was rightly condemned at the time. It was so long ago that many of our supporters don’t even remember Bob Lord who passed away in 1981.” She said, “My job is to search through history to bring back the voice of all those whose voice was taken away from them.” The Yemenite affair saw children placed for adoption with Ashkenazi families without parental consent to escape camp conditions. Parents received death notices of missing children whose fate remains a disputed issue in Israel. The affair came to light in the early 1970s when families received IDF drafting orders for missing children. The Israeli government established committees to investigate kidnapping of immigrant children. The Bahlul-Minkowski, Shalgi and Cohen-Kedmi Commissions held inquiries that dismissed abduction allegations and wrongdoings by the government. Yet questions remain. In 2016, the Israeli government appointed Tzachi Hanegbi to review evidence. An online database provides declassified documents. Israel’s Health Ministry analysed DNA of a child in May.

Coalition backs ‘Jordan Gateway’ project BY DAVID SAFFER
The Israeli government has approved a proposal to accelerate the ‘Jordan Gateway’ Park Terminal. Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Regional Cooperation Minister Esawi Frej agreed the initiative for the industrial and employment park between Israel and Jordan first proposed during the 1994 peace agreement. It will serve as a meeting point for entrepreneurs for joint initiatives and includes an industrial zone on the Jordanian side. The park will be built in the northern end of the Jordan Valley with the Emek Hamaayanot Regional Council. The project includes a bridge, already built. The initiative will be fully coordinated with the Jordanians. Lapid welcomed the news at his weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday. “We are taking the good neighbourly relations between our two countries another step forward,” he said. “This is a breakthrough that will contribute greatly to developing and strengthening the region.” Final details were addressed during Lapid’s visit to King Abdullah II in Amman last week. “This is an initiative that will increase employment in both countries, advance our economic and diplomatic relations, and enhance the peace and friendship between our two countries,” noted Lapid, who thanked Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli for mobilising officials in the process.

Maccabi Haifa FC officials visited the two Athens synagogues, met representatives of the Jewish community and World Jewish Congress before laying a wreath at a memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust in Greece ahead of a UEFA Champions League qualifier match against Olympiacos F.C. A delegation led by CEO Itzik Ovadia heard from Holocaust survivor Emmy Mekiou in a ceremony. Mekiou hid from the Nazis with her family in Athens. She has spoken to groups and schools to share her story. “We must ensure that hate and crimes of the past will never be repeated again,” she said. Speaking about the importance of the visit, Zvi Wizner, a Maccabi board member and child of a survivor who was saved by Oscar Schindler, noted, “Preserving the memory of the Holocaust is a core principle of Maccabi Haifa. “From my perspective it is essential that the team uses its platform to build relationships with Jewish communities

Mair said the team should look at Diaspora Jewish communities when travelling to Europe, noting, “As someone who was born in Haifa this is an important opportunity to enhance the relationship between our community and Jewish state.” Saltiel, WJC’s representative in Geneva and UNESCO, highlighted the organisations record with clubs and leagues across the sporting world, adding, “The WJC recognises the unique ability of sports to serve as a platform for bringing people together and elevating the fight against antisemitism in the public consciousness. It can also shine a light on the diversity of Jewish communities around the world.” The Jewish community of Greece numbers 5,000 members. Israel and Morocco strengthen ties
bring Moroccan workers into construction and nursing sectors during a visit to Rabat last month. The Israeli military hosted a Moroccan commando unit for an exercise 12 months ago. Defence Minister Benny Gantz also made a historic visit last November to sign a security bilateral agreement. The trip followed Prime Minister Yair Lapid, when Foreign Minister, inaugurating Israel's diplomatic representation in Raba last August. Lapid’s visit was the first by an Israeli minister since 2003. Israeli military observers attended the annual "African Lion" military exercise organised by Morocco and the United States. And in March, an Israeli IDF delegation met with Moroccan officers in Rabat. Former US President Donald Trump brokered the Israel-Morocco accord and recognised Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara as part of the agreement. The two nations had low-level diplomatic relations in the 1990s, but Morocco ended diplomatic ties. Israel and Moroccan relations have developed since normalisation deals with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in the "Abraham Accords". The two nations normalised ties in 2020. Around one million Jews originate from Morocco in Israel, 70,000 visited last year to trace roots.

Israel and Morocco have strengthened its military ties. IDF Chief Lieutenant-General Aviv Kochavi met with Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces Belkhir El Farouk for weapons development and training discussions, a military statement said. Kochavi also held meetings with Morocco's Minister Delegate of Defence Abdellatif Loudiyi and Intelligence Chief Brahim Hassani. During the first official visit of an Israeli IDF Chief, El Farouk noted his interest in jointly setting up “industrial defence” projects. "The meetings discussed opportunities for military cooperation, both in exercises and training, as well as in the operational and intelligence fields," a statement said. Minister of Transport Merav Michaeli, in related news, has praised Morocco and Jordan’s King Mohammed VI reaching an agreement to open the Allenby border between Israel and Jordan throughout the week. "His willingness to become personally involved contributed,” she said. “I know the extent of his deep commitment to the region. It will continue to be a helpful factor.” Michaeli noted the importance of improved links between the Palestinian Authority and Jordan.

RAM will fly four times a week between Casablanca and Tel Aviv. Israeli
airlines launched flights to Marrakesh 12 months ago. The north African nation is anticipating 200,000 Israeli tourists this year. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said, "Morocco has an important history with its Jewish community, unique to the Arab world." "Not everything is about security," Michaeli observed. AT THE VILLAGE OPTICIAN WE BELIEVE THAT LOOKING AFTER THE VISION OF YOUR CHILDREN FROM A YOUNG AGE HELPS WITH THEIR DEVELOPMENT AND GIVES THEM A BRIGHTER FUTURE We are specialists in children’s eye care, committing the time needed to assess your child’s vision fully and recommend the best solutions possible if they need corrective eyewear. One of the most common childhood vision problems is called myopia, also known as short-sightedness.
the risk of becoming highly myopic and developing complications increases. High myopia is a major concern nowadays, with almost 1 billion people worldwide expected to be affected by it by 2050¹. This is important because high myopia can increase the risks of vision impairment later in life.
Myopia occurs when children’s eyes grow more than they should. When this process doesn’t stop, we call it myopia progression.
But did you know help is at hand? Stellest™ lenses are Essilor’s best solution to fight children’s myopia and are clinically proven to slow down myopia progression by 67% on average.²
Today most myopic children wear glasses with standard ophthalmic lenses. These lenses correct myopia and allow children to see clearly. However, their myopia might still be worsening. This means that as children grow, their myopia may progress, requiring stronger prescriptions. The more the correction grows the more they are dependent on their glasses. This also means
If your child needs an eye examination or already wears standard spectacles for myopia , contact us today to book an appointment. We will carry out a thorough eye examination and if your child is myopic, we can start them on the Stellest™ journey, giving them the vision they need both now and for the future.

Don’t get used to the unusual OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN
It’s been an interesting week. Two seemingly unconnected events merged together resulting in what might be decisions which otherwise would not have been made. The first was fairly minor. A friend of mine – I’ll call her Sarah – has been in correspondence with a voluntary organisation in their capacity as one of their contributors. The correspondence unfortunately grew hostile and to make matters worse the organisation refused to address the complaint and made statements in the correspondence which were clearly not true. When I saw the exchange I was astonished and said to Sarah that in my view this organisation was clearly failing to meet its responsibilities and I couldn’t understand why she wanted to have anything to do with them. Her response was that she got so used to the way in which this organisation conducted itself. It had not occurred to her to take a step back and think about whether she wanted to maintain a connection with them. The second event was much more serious and far-reaching. Going back to at least 1964 the PLO and more recently the Palestinian Authority, had been paying terrorists or families of terrorists salaries for killing Jews in Israel. On Monday this week it was announced that the payments made to those terrorists in Israeli jails (convicted of
a bombing in Jerusalem where nine people were killed) will have their payments increased. My initial thought was that this was nothing more than a cynical approach to the effect of inflation and the payments being made to the individuals concerned. In the same way as I responded to the first event though, it suddenly occurred to me that for far too long the community has been largely silent on this abhorrent practice. Over two years ago in May 2020, as President of the Zionist Central Council, I wrote to the Palestinian Mission in London complaining about this policy. In that letter I said: “Our concern is the continued policy of the Palestinian Authority – PA – to reward individuals who kill or maim Jews in Israel. Although leaders of the PA have repeatedly stated that settlements are the main obstacle to peace, it is difficult to accept this in light of the continued policy of ‘pay to slay’. This policy makes it impossible to believe that there is a genuine desire on the part of the PA for there to be peace. Making heroes out of those who kill and maim Jews tells the real story of the aims of the PA. Removing this ‘pay to slay’ policy is in our view a basic first step and I welcome your input as to when this will take place”. Needless to say I didn’t get the courtesy of even an acknowledgement, let alone a meaningful response. So how do these two seemingly disconnected events merge? It’s simple. Each of them are examples of conduct which on any empirical examination, is reprehensible. They are of course miles apart in terms of degree, but the principle is the same. Sarah
A Whale's Tale OPINION PIECE (REBBETZEN) ANNA BERGSON
Recently I was taking a much needed coffee break when I came across a beautiful video that brought me to tears. A marine biologist (named Nan) was doing whale research in the South Pacific Ocean and had got into the water to film two humpback whales that were nearby. Although she had been swimming with whales for over 30 years, she knew to keep her distance as it is their ‘back yard’. Suddenly the larger whale pulled her under his fin, escorting her along with him. Surprised by this unexpected free ride, Nan knew in the back of her mind the whale was trying to tell her something. But the sharp barnicles under his fin were starting to cut into her torso and she wriggled to try and get free. In that brief moment Nan turned around and saw, behind the second whale, a third beast in the water, however this one’s fins were shaped differently and Nan realised it was a huge tiger shark! At this point she
realised the whale’s true intentions and that he was trying to save her! Not willing to desert her for one moment, the whale scooped her up and placed her on his huge head. The journey to safety took ten minutes and the whale knew exaclty where Nan's boat was where he delivered her with absolutely no charge. As his smooth and magestic body turned over in the glistening water and swam away, Nan cried out “thank you - I love you!” Once she had got over the shock and emotions, Nan thought back to a friend's research on whales that showed that whales display altruistic character traits, not only to their own kind but to other animals too. As we know, altruism is doing a pure act of kindness without expecting any thanks or reward. This whale saved Nan’s life without seeking fame (although this story is famous now!), fortune or celebrity status, social media ‘likes’, not even a ‘yeshar koyach’ from his whale community. It was a most pure act of chessed, kindness from one living being to another. This got me thinking. We all try to live by
in the first example and our community in the second have just got used to something which is unacceptable. Sarah is now thinking of disassociating her group from the voluntary organisation mentioned above. As for the Pay to Slay policy, this is something we should be yelling about from the rooftops. Some progress has been made with the British Government over payments to the Palestinian Authority. The bulk of reports in the Jewish press seem to concentrate on one Jewish group or another complaining about Israel not making enough concessions in relation to the peace process and how if only she did, all would be well. Presently however, there is no peace process, only a continued desire on the part of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority to either kill Jews or pay those who do. That should be our focus and it will certainly be that of the Zionist Central Council over the next few months. In the same way as there is no nuance to adopting the IHRA definition on anti-Semitism, there can be no equivocation in condemning the Pay to Slay policy. This unusual and murderous scheme has to be brought front and centre both within and without the Jewish community so that everyone can be aware of the real reason why there is no peace process. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel. Torah values and standards… when given a new opportunity of doing a mitzvah, do we always agree to do/perform this mitzvah simply ‘lishma’ (for its own sake)? Or, just sometimes, do we think in the back of our minds, yes I will do such and such because maybe Hashem will, in turn, reward me with ‘that thing’ that I need or want… Our physical bodies may not be as big as a whale but our neshama, our unique G-dly soul within, has infinte potential for personal growth and transformation. When we overcome our egos and become selfless we can achieve spiritual depths deeper than all the oceans… In a heart-warming ending to the story, two months after the life-saving incident, Nan got a call from a fishing boat in a harbour near to her station to say “Come over, your friend is here to say hello!” Nan knew it was him from two distinctive marks he had on his tail fin. She couldn’t believe he'd come to check up on her! She got into the water and thought, how do you hug such a big animal?! She just lay on his back, stroking him and crying “thank you forever!” Whilst we all may be facing difficulties, challenges and pain in one way or another, we can always look out for things that lift and inspire us to use each and every moment of our lives in the very best positive way we can.

CST Antisemitic Incidents Report Jan-June 2022 OPINION PIECE BY DAVE RICH, DIRECTOR OF POLICY AT CST
It is no surprise the number of antisemitic incidents fell during the first half of this year. They could hardly do anything else, given last year’s all-time record high during and after the conflict in Israel and Gaza last May. I’m sure we all remember the car convoys driving through Jewish neighbourhoods, waving flags and shouting abuse. Antisemites reacted to conflict in Israel by spewing out anti-Jewish hate, online and on the streets. There has been no similar conflict this year, and no other ‘trigger event’ to cause a comparable spike in anti-Jewish hate, so it is some relief that the number of incidents reported to CST has dropped. This means we can see what antisemitism looks like in its purest form, with no external factors. It is not a pretty sight. A higher proportion of incidents are violent (although thankfully not the majority), more are on the streets and in your face. It is as if antisemitism is moving back to how it was before the pandemic forced everyone online. CST’s recent training course for the Stamford Hill Charedi community was designed to teach the participants how to deal with this kind of danger. It combined self-defence training and security awareness, with an official counter-terrorism component delivered by the Metropolitan Police. Antisemitism is a blight on society and affects all parts of our community, but it tends to land disproportionately on the most visible parts. This is why CST has a specific focus on increasing security awareness and capabilities within the Stamford Hill community. There is a waiting list for another course and will hopefully repeat it in the future so as many people as possible will have the ability to protect themselves and their community. One troubling trend to emerge from CST’s new report is the growth in antisemitism amongst younger people. The proportion of anti-Jewish hate incidents in which the perpetrators were under 18 years old has more than doubled in two years, from 9% in the first half of 2020 to 21% in the first six months of 2022. This looks even worse when you consider the number of incidents in and around schools dropped considerably. This is not simply a case of children from one school picking on children from another, it suggests antisemitic ideas are becoming more common, and more popular, amongst a minority of younger people in this country. It looks like there is a growing need for education about the Jewish people, about antisemitism and wider society. To volunteer for CST, or to report antisemitism or suspicious activity, visit www.cst. org.uk or call our 24-hour number, 0800 032 3263. In an emergency, always call Police first on 999.

Lead 5s West did not want to lead from an honour as that might be to declarer’s benefit. Instead he led the five of trumps. Declarer won in hand with the queen and crossed to the king of diamonds to take the heart finesse. West won with the king and exited with a second trump. Declarer won in hand with the king of trumps and played the ace and another club. East won the trick and played a third trump to declarer’s ace. Declarer now ducked a diamond, letting West’s eight hold. West continued with the king of clubs. Declarer ruffed in dummy and then cashed the ace of diamonds. When the diamonds proved to be 4-2 he was down one. Declarer offered a weak apology to his partner and then muttered, “Nothing was right in the red suits.” North was not impressed. “You had nine top tricks,” he said. “All you have to do is ruff a Heart in your own hand, the short hand before drawing trumps. Play the ace of hearts at trick two and play the queen of hearts at trick three. West wins and leads a second trump to your king. Then you cross to dummy with a low diamond to the king and ruff its remaining heart with the ace of spades. You would have a choice of suits to play next but you should try the ace and another club. After a defender wins this trick, he cannot prevent you from entering dummy with a high ruff of a club to draw the last trump. You would have ten tricks - 4 trumps, 1 Diamond or 1 Club ruffed, 1 heart, 1 heart ruffed, 2 Diamonds and 1 Club.

AJEX poppies bloom! AJEX JMA launched a poppy project inviting schools in memory of Jewish men and women who served in UK Armed Forces earlier this year. AJEX is passionate about teaching children the importance of remembrance. The poppy is often the first item children are exposed to learning about remembrance. AJEX distributed poppy seeds with Magen David markers. Sacks Morasha Jewish Primary School hosted veteran and AJEX vice president Ron Shelley who helped year three pupils plant poppies and spoke on being evacuated. Ron answered children’s questions. Sinai Primary School pupils also planted poppies in the school’s wellbeing garden. Chief executive Fiona Palmer said, “As part of the ‘education’ pillar the project instils a love of the outside world in young people. It also educates children and teenagers on the importance of remembering Jewish servicemen and women who made that world safe and secure.” AJEX visits schools and are inviting schools to sign up to remembrance talks for November. Over 200 JFS students visit Poland Over 200 JFS students went to Poland last week in what was the largest organised educational trip for young Jewish students in the country in the last two years. After a twoyear hiatus from educational group trips to Poland, the trip organised by JFS together with Aish UK and JRoots, two members of the Jewish Futures family, were delighted to be able to guide three busloads of JFS Sixth Formers on this impactful and formative trip, with a forth bus guided by Chazak. The trip was led by Rabbi Eli Birnbaum, from Aish UK, together with Zak Jaffay from JRoots, and focused not just on the atrocities of the Holocaust but also on the importance of Jewish life before the War, Jewish identity, continuity, and connection. The students explored the concept of the Righteous among the Nations, hearing stories of extreme bravery and self-sacrifice by the few individuals who risked everything to shelter and protect Jews. The group visited the beautiful main shul in Lancut, which has been renovated and looked after by a selfless Polish man called Mirek who has dedicated his life to the preservation of the shul and Lancut’s illustrious Jewish history. The final stop before heading to Krakow for Shabbos was the mass grave of Zbylitowska Góra, final resting place of thousands of Jews from the nearby town of Tarnow. Seeing close to 200 JFS students singing and dancing to welcome Shabbos at the grand Temple shul in Krakow’s old Jewish quarter was an incredibly moving experience as they brought the streets of Krakow back to life. A highlight of this tour was visiting the ancient shul of the Rema, Rav Moshe Isserles, widely regarded as the main halachic codifier of the Ashkenazi mesorah. Havdalah took place in the square opposite his shul, as the entire group gathered together with candles and singing.
As a powerful culmination of the transformational trip, the group spent their final day in Auschwitz and its adjacent extermination camp, Birkenau, learning, reflecting and commemorating. A number of the students shared moving testimonies from family members who had survived the Holocaust. Beatty’s 105th birthday party
Beatty Orwell celebrated her 105th birthday party with family friends and volunteers from Jewish Care’s Brenner Stepney Community Centre
Former Mayoress and Councillor of Tower Hamlets, Beatrice Orwell – known as Beatty, celebrated her 105th birthday at home on 7th July, surrounded by family, friends, staff and volunteers from Jewish Care’s Brenner Stepney Community Centre, where she has been a member for many years. A real Eastender, Beatty was born in Aldgate in 1917. She proudly recalls taking a stand against the fascist blackshirts at the Battle of Cable Street in 1936. Beatty is also the oldest member of the Labour Party and was surprised with flowers and a letter from the Leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, and received good wishes from former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on the occasion of her birthday. In his message, Sir Keir Starmer wrote to Beatty on behalf of the Party, saying, “Congratulations on your milestone birthday, the oldest member of the Labour party we’ve ever had. Wishing you the happiest of 105th
birthdays and the warmest of thanks for all that you have done for our party.” Beatty was also delighted to receive her 105th birthday card from Her Majesty the Queen, together with flowers and gifts from friends, staff, volunteers and members of Jewish Care’s Brenner Stepney Community Centre. As a birthday surprise, The Friends of Stepney Committee organised music and entertainment with Beatty’s favourite entertainer from the centre, Ian Leigh, to sing her favourite songs at the party in her garden. “It was truly a great party,” says Beatty’s daughter, June Legg, “Mum had such an amazing birthday. How to help yourself make a happy summer doesn’t help in that respect. If at all possible, take advantage of a phone’s silent facility or, if you are really in the holiday mood, even opt for the “off” button.
BY PSYCHOTHERAPIST AND JTEEN FOUNDER, YAAKOV BARR
We all know that holidays are good for us. Whatever form they take, be it in a five-star luxurious holiday or a simple house swap, holidays are a chance to unwind, regroup and enjoy quality time with family and friends. Taking the time to ‘recharge the batteries’ lowers stress levels, which in turn keeps many of the vital organs, including one’s heart and one’s brain, healthier and functioning properly. But leaving anxiety behind once we’re on holiday is sometimes easier said than done. In a recent survey, 50 % of Britons said they were more exhausted after going on holiday than they were before they went. There are schedules to keep, children to be entertained and a strange pillow to contend with. There are hold ups on the motorway, delays at the airport as well as the expected lost luggage and lost reservations. The plan to retreat, relax, recharge, reflect and recreate becomes but a distant dream. Here are a few tips to make your holiday a relaxing one
1 FLEXIBILITY When expectations of ourselves, of others, and of events are unrealistic, stress and

unhappiness are the end result. Holidays are events out of the ordinary and we often expect something extraordinary of them. Many of us want to have the perfect holiday, with perfect weather and perfect scenery. When events don’t turn out as planned, often beyond our control, we end up feeling frustrated, angry and stressed. By being flexible and having realistic expectations, we can accept whatever is the reality.
2) STRIVE NOT TO CATASTROPHIZE
It is easy to dramatize and make something a bigger deal than it is. It is one of the most common thinking errors, and one which causes much anxiety and anger. When problems arise, we need to view
them objectively. A real catastrophe might be when human life is taken or a natural disaster occurs. A catastrophe is not when the hotel room is not ready, the food is not tasty or the car breaks down.
3 DIGITAL DETOX
Thanks to technology and our ever increasing attachment to it, having a break from our work, gadgets and emails becomes a greater challenge. What’s the point of leaving town and going somewhere that’s supposed to be relaxing if you are constantly fielding emails and phone calls? For a holiday to be rejuvenating, it is vital to be completely present in the moment and the distraction caused by constantly pinging smart phones certainly

Mindfulness is a concept which is revolutionising the world of psychology. Mindfulness is simply training our minds to be in the present rather than always being in the past, which can be depressing, or in the future, which can cause anxiety. With mindfulness we live in the ‘being’ mode, using all our senses (sound, sight, taste, touch, smell) to fully experience daily activities like eating and walking. So try to stay fully focussed on the present during your holiday, taking in the whole experience, the scenery, the sounds, the tastes and the smells! By being in the moment as much as you can, you can make your time away a real holiday and not a headache. Yaakov Barr is a psychotherapist, clinical director and founder of Jteen. Motoring: Honda HR-V Our travel writer Malcolm Ginsberg has added motoring to his portfolio over the last 21 months. He is a member of The Guild of Motoring Writers and many years ago was Lotus Public Relations Manager. Here he tries out the Honda HR-V. Our travel writer Malcolm Ginsberg has added motoring to his portfolio and is enjoying it. He is a member of The Guild of Motoring Writers and many years ago was Lotus Public Relations Manager. This is his take on a fine small SUV family car. To a certain generation Honda meant motor bikes. It very much still does today with 400m built since 1959. For executive aviation users the name is linked to fast and smart 6/8-seat corporate jets. But if you are into motor cars and want something stylish and advanced Honda is surely a brand to seriously consider. The much-improved 2022 HR-V should be on your shortlist for a medium-sized family car. As a flat dweller I am a fan of hybrids such as the Honda. We are not ready for all electric cars with power supply problems. The virtue of a hybrid was brought back to me recently when I inadvertently left the lights on with a test car. The main battery was flat but the hybrid power unit still had plenty of life and I was able to meander up our very quiet street at around 5mph until suddenly there was enough power in the system to get the whole car going. Relief. This could not have happened in the past. A pair of jump leads were required. The Honda HR-V is a well-equipped four-seat front-wheel drive mini sport utility vehicle. (SUV) with a smartly styled and nicely finished interior and sits up nicely on the road overlooking lesser saloons. A fifth person can legally sit at the back, but the place is for emergencies only. There are three models available, Elegance, Advance (the test car) or Advance Style which comes with roof rails, LED cornering lights and a wireless charger. The rear doors do not have handles as such, but a cleverly designed grip built into the bodywork to ensure a smooth exterior. Passenger access is very easy which is not the case with some of its rivals. The handling is sharp and it is a joy to use, particularly around town where it is very quiet. Sad to say once out onto rural roads and on dual carriageways, when acceleration is needed, it is not the quietest car around. Then it is noisy. However, on a motorway, at steady cruising, the Honda is very quiet. In these days of high petrol prices Honda claim 58.9mpg for the urban cycle but in truth can expect 50mpg for a mixture of suburban and motorway driving

and a range of 400 miles. It is a Honda and 0-60 in 10sec in competitive for a medium-sized basically four-seat family car. Honda says that the HR-V has been designed for one foot driving, but my approach is to use two feet except perhaps on a motorway, where I am a fan of cruise control. With both peddles available it must be quicker in an emergency to stop. Chassis and suspension enhancements deliver a supple ride combined with enhanced dynamics and revised suspension components have increased stability and reduced body roll. With the 2022 model Honda’s ‘Global Small Platform’ has been updated for the HR-V and the ratio of high-tensile steel increased for improved body rigidity. Honda’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) system further improves the dynamic stability of the car. The mid-price “Advance” car came loaded with standard luxuries. The basic Elegance range is also very well equipped and worth looking at. The test model came with a host of extras, just too many to note here but
including a rear-view camera, an air diffusion system, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and starting, heated door mirrors, heated front seats, heated leather steering wheel and

hands-free power tailgate plus what is called Honda ‘Sensing’, a comprehensive package. This includes adaptive cruise control, a collision mitigation braking system, lane-departure warning (which bleeps and was eventually turned off!) and parking assistance. There is a 9inch touch screen, easy to use and a pair of USB outlets both front and back. No ashtray! The sat nav has voice activation but no head up display for cars in the UK market. All HR-Vs combine a 1.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors for a total of 129bhp. This makes for good fuel economy (expect to see high-40s) and a very quiet car in stop-start traffic. However, when you accelerate the petrol engine immediately starts revving very noisily, almost as though you are stuck in first gear. The boot has drop over access and offers plenty of room. Honda’s rear ‘Magic Seats’ really do help with stowing luggage. They can fold down for a normal flat load area, or fold up to give a separate storage area in the middle of the car. The plastic boot liner also helps keep mess to a minimum. The only extra on the car was the rather smart White Pearl paint work £825, giving a total of £31,035, a competitive price in a well filled market. This is BTN’s third Honda model road test and I been impressed with all the products including the quality of the interior finish and attention to detail. Next up the tiny futuristic Honda E. Its range is 137 miles but we have solved the charging problem. honda.co.uk/cars/new/hr-v-hybrid

Easy steps to improve the cash flow of your business Biggest worries of businesses right now
it takes customers to pay may help you avert the cash flow struggles in advance. For example, if the cash conversion cycle increases, it is advisable to make changes to the accounts receivable management right away, as it signals the current procedures are not efficient. Also, the insights on the date that your customers usually make payments can also alert you in advance, if that pattern changes and you might need to follow up immediately. Monitoring cash flow data and reporting can help your business forecast the cash flow accordingly and allow you to prepare for the future.
BY URI DEBSON
The UK inflation rate is expected to stay above 9% for several months now, and probably more than 11% in October, well above the target of 2%. It is predicted that another rate hike by the Bank of England is inevitable and BoE will raise it for the fifth time on August 4th. The small and medium sized businesses are now squeezed between the two unfavourable economic forces. On the one hand, the soaring inflation, and on the other hand rising borrowing costs, which are now the highest in the past eight years. Rising costs and weak demand push SMEs to apply for loans. In Q2 2022 applications for small business loans have increased by more than 77% mainly due to rising worries of recession. Almost 40% of business loan applicants said “managing the day-to-day cash flow” was the main reason for taking a loan. Now, how to get out of the trap of high borrowing costs and soaring expenditure costs? The solution is to improve the cash flow. Kolleno, a cloud-based AR automation platform has prepared tips on how to improve the cash flow internally.
BRIEF YOUR TEAM ABOUT CASH FLOW
When you are in the process of optimising the cash flow, it is important to introduce all departments to a more efficient cash flow management. For example, the sales team can offer different payment terms to customers depending on their payment behaviour. For example, incentivise early invoice payments, or offer payment in instalments options. The purchasing department, on the other hand, could negotiate the longer terms, to have an optimise the Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable strategy. The customer relations specialist can also contribute by clearing up the client’s ability to pay on time. Finally, the stock management department can monitor if there is too much cash locked up in stock. The key is to have all departments briefed regarding the cash flow optimisation to work together on the common goal.
GET PAID PROMPTLY
According to Barclays more than one quarter of UK SMEs are owed money. The latest study revealed that the major reason, again is the inflation that started to unravel throughout the economy. For many businesses this money could be used for paying suppliers or even staff on time, paying expenses and investing for the future. When the overdue invoice balance rises it is important to follow a proactive payment chasing strategy. This means sending an invoice straight away after the sale was made. Also make sure there are no errors and the recipient details are correct. Even if this sounds intuitive, that is one of the major reasons why the invoices are unpaid, with 54% invoices being sent to wrong addresses. Last but not least, it is important to send payment reminders. Usually, it is better to send out “approaching due-date” reminders, and follow-up reminders in case the payment becomes overdue. Make sure to use the appropriate tone of voice not to jeopardise your relationship with clients.
DIGITASING CREDIT CONTROL
Cash Flow can become a key source of liquidity and stability of the company during the recession. However, it is time-consuming to monitor the payment behaviour of customers, finding the best words to send out a reminder, or to avoid errors that come along with manual accounts receivable management. Find out how your business can benefit from the accounts receivable automation and reduce late payments.
MONITOR YOUR CASH FLOW DATA
The payment behaviour of your clients is a major source of data, so make sure you are using it to improve your cash flow. For example, Ageing Reports, provide insights into what percentage of customers owe you money for more than a
month, two or even three. For example, if the major debtors are within two to three months of overdue payment terms, then it would be more efficient to prepare templates that can be sent out targeting these groups of customers. Furthermore, the statistics of how long

Whole roast chickens offer the best value for money as opposed to buying chicken pieces. However, what do you do with the leftovers? The answer is simple, carefully remove all the chicken flesh, scrapping it from the bone, discard any skin and then shred by slicing the dark and light meat into strips and then use them in one of my recipe ideas below. Time for a change in your business?
BY DARREN STROM
During Covid, many enterprising entrepreneurs explored different directions for their businesses or contemplated brand new business ideas. Now with hyper inflation around us, and less money in our pockets, it could be a good idea to launch a new idea or make some changes to the appeal of your business...
EVALUATE YOUR NEW BUSINESS IDEA:
You could have a smart business idea but without the right preparation it remains just that; an idea. For your idea to blossom into a business opportunity you should consider the following: A truly good idea is one that addresses an existing problem and solves it. Does your idea fill a gap in the market or address an unresolved problem within a particular market? Once you have a solution to an existing issue, focus on exploring a niche in the market. The niche will be to your particular expertise and strengths and how to differentiate from competitors. Next; build the MVP (minimum viable product). Building a ‘tester product’, which has room for improvement before
putting your final idea on the market, provides you the feedback necessary to see whether the product is liked, and how it could be improved. The next step would be to determine the channels you will use to market your solution. Let us assume that you have taken your idea out of the idea stage and have found an existing gap in the market and you have evaluated the market appeal and determined that your product or service is viable. A common pitfall is to quickly dismiss your idea when it does not seem to “sell” and blame the market .“There is no market for it”, is a common refrain. What might be happening, is that your product is fine but you need to figure out how to get people to understand and want your product or service.
IMPROVING YOUR BUSINESS APPEAL:
You might not need create new services but taking a new view on how your business brand appears to your clients could make all the difference. Look at your brand’s appeal and message and how your product or service solves your clients' problems. Does the messaging and wording you use in your marketing need updating to appeal to your ideal client? Get creative with how you can make customers still feel invested in your brand and engaged with your content from a distance.
The first place that is worth looking at to improve is your web presence. A website is the virtual shop front for your brand. If your website is not aligned with your brand with the correct colours and imagery to reflect what you stand for and compelling, targeted text, you might be turning away prospective clients. Another key thing to bear in mind is the all important “call to action” on your website. Is it clear what action you would like the client to take when they arrive at your page? Do you want them to call you? Fill out a short form or maybe fill in a call-back request? Think about how your clients usually interact with you brand and that will determine the route you can steer them to get in contact. Don’t be turned off by naysayers who encourage you sit low and not invest in your brand when the economy is bad. This could be the best time to gain the business that your competitors are losing by not being proactive. ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com AM I TOO OLD? Dear Rabbi I am fifty-five years old and have a number of medical problems. I am wanting to give up work and slow down but my wife says that I am just being lazy. She also insists that it will impact on our standard of living, which is true. I know Judaism insists that one should look after their health first and foremost, so I wonder whether you think I am right to “wind down,” or listen to my wife and just keep going. Neville Dear Neville You don’t mention whether your work directly affects your wellbeing or whether it’s just your overall frame of mind. Here’s a little secret. I have a friend. He is a 6’2” Rastafarian by the name of Rax. Rax came into my house about ten years ago to train me in Maui Thai. (It’s a lethal form of martial arts). I have been doing this now for the better part of 10 years. It comes with its hazards – like the time Rax and I were sparring, and I threw a kick up to his chin and he came down with an elbow block – crack! He fractured my toe. It was very painful. The following week, I was lying on my couch feeling sorry for myself when there was a knock on the door. It was Rax. I thought to myself, “how nice of him to come visit.” But for the fact that he was carrying the pads and what not and I just looked at him – and looked at myself with my boot and crutches and I said, “Rax, what are you doing?” “I can’t!” And he just looked at me: “Your other foot is working man. So are your hands. Come on,
nothing to you!” All Rax was looking to teach me was that our weaknesses – some of them are real. The toe really is fractured. But there is still more you can do that you don’t otherwise realise. When there is a weakness in the body you could try to fix that weakness. Alternatively you can strengthen the area all around the weakness. Some forty-eight years ago, I had a second grade teacher who observed me struggling over a piece of mathematics and complaining about my inability to complete it, and I will always remember, how she looked across the room and declared rather loudly: “Yitzchak Schochet – There is no such a thing as, I can’t!” To be sure I have since come to discover that the ancient Rabbis, about two thousand years before her, coined a similar phrase, albeit in a more positive context: ain licha davar haomed bifnai harotzon - “There is nothing that can stand in the way of true will.” If you have an area of vulnerability in your life, you could give up at the first hurdle. Or you could discover your inner greatness and work with what you do have to achieve great things.
WHO’S THE LUCKY ONE? Dear Rabbi I have been on the Jewish dating scene for several years. I have been out with a lot of boys and they all want me. My problem is none of them are good enough for me. Why can’t I just find the right one? Why can’t there be any normal frum guys out there? Bella

With this one can explain the Mishna - The honour of your student should be dear to you as your own because you may well earn your own stand-
Dear Bella There was a really spoiled young lady who was always in the habit of getting everything she wants. One day she came to her Rabbi: “Rabbi, once again I am spoiled for choice! Both Chaim and Moshe want to marry me? Who do you think will marry me? Who will be the lucky one?” The Rabbi looked to her: “Moshe will marry you. Chaim will be the lucky one!”
9TH OF AV POSTPONED INDEFINITELY Dear Rabbi I love your column! Can you offer some Tisha B’Av inspiration? Selma Dear Selma This year the 9th of Av falls on Shabbat, thus rendering it, on the one hand, the saddest Shabbat of the year when we commemorate the destruction of our Temples. However, it is also referred to as Shabbat Chazon – the “Shabbat of Vision,” based on the opening words of the Haftorah, discussing Isaiah’s vision, foretelling destruction. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev however put a positive spin on this and says that indeed, in its own way, it is the happiest Shabbat of the year. Because the word chazon means vision – and even as we are in the darkness of this exile we are shown a vision – a glimpse of the future Temple and the future light that awaits us all! Indeed, this year the fast is postponed till the Sunday. Which means we can eat and “celebrate” as it were on the actual 9th of Av. And as we have a principle regarding something
postponed, “since it’s postponed it remains postponed” let this year be the year where the 9th of

Tisha b’av and the 20th Century BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN
Mourning is a deeply personal and emotional experience. Merely “going through the motions” without authentic inner sadness yields a listless and empty experience. Mourning ancient tragedies or events which transpired in the distant past is always emotionally daunting. Tisha b’av in the modern era is even more emotionally complicated. For centuries, Jews were scattered across the globe and mired in hopelessness and despair. Living through endless persecution and hatred, it was “easy” to trace our bleak world to the day we left Yerushalayim. Tisha b’av may never have been “current”, but its footprints were traceable in everyday life. We had abandoned Hashem and betrayed our relationship, and for that, we were cursed. Our suffering was the price for our crimes, even while we hoped to one day rebuild that great love with Hashem. That day has come, and our love has been restored. Millions of Jews live in Israel and millions of others live in the spiritual shadow of Israel. Though we still struggle with the final phases of history, our condition does not closely resemble the hardships and darkness of previous generations. Living with triumph and pride, how do we mourn within this new and unfamiliar historical context? Without updating our mourning, Tisha b’av can become emotionally disconnected. How can Tisha b’av be updated and how can we discover authentic and relevant sadness? Perhaps, the solution lies in looking back to the past century and to the two seismic events which reshaped the Jewish landscape– the Holocaust and the formation of the state of Israel. If we don’t associate Tisha b’av with these two recent history-altering events, we risk severing our national mourning from our modern reality.
THE ABYSS
The Holocaust was not just as a horrific tragedy. It was the “abyss” of Jewish history, and, after centuries of sorrow, we endured our darkest nightmare. Without minimizing the misery of our long 2000year “night” of Jewish exile, the Holocaust was the single greatest trauma of Jewish history. No inquisition, or pogrom, or any Crusader invasion compares to the Holocaust, either in scope or intensity.
EXPOSING THE MONSTER
The Holocaust wasn’t just the bleakest moment of Jewish history. It also pulled back the curtain and exposed the horror of anti-Semitism. Throughout history, violence toward Jews was always “attributed” to the general decayed state of humanity. In a world of religious
intolerance, racial discrimination, and savage cruelty, violence toward Jews felt “natural”. Life in brutal and repressive societies is always fragile, and Jewish life was even more vulnerable in these morally degraded conditions. However, Europe of the 19th and 20th century had turned the corner and was a continent on the move. Rapid industrialization, economic revolution, political enfranchisement, and cultural evolution had created optimism, progress, and great belief in the virtue of Man. Humanity had pulled itself out of the quagmire of corruption and savagery and was rushing headlong toward a utopian world of science, tolerance, and education. Germany was at the center of this development, spearheading advances in every sector of human progress. Yet, tragically, even this progressive and cultured society degenerated into hatred and genocide. Jews must never define themselves by anti-Semitism, but we also should not ignore its pervasiveness. This hatred is baked into human history. It can be tamed and curtailed, but can never be fully eliminated. Tisha Bav plunged the world into a dark state of repression and regression. After extinguishing the light in Yerushalayim, humanity suffered through close to 1500 years of stagnation and oppression. About 500 years ago the world enjoyed a Renassaince of spirit and began fashioning a more civil society of reason and morality. Sadly, even the modern enlightened world hasn’t shown immunity to anti-Semitism. If anything, the Holocaust showcases of the catastrophic impact of Tisha b’av- the unleashing of anti-Semitism. This incurable disease has stained the moral consciousness of humanity, plaguing even the modern world of enlightenment and equality. Tisha b’av released a horrific monster which devoured human virtue for centuries. In the first part of the past century that monster ran wild. It still assaults the human spirit, and we are still struggling to slay it. For this we mourn on Tisha b’av, the day we let the monster out of its cage.
ON THE DOORSTEP
The second seismic shift of the past century was the formation of the State of Israel. How should Tisha b’av be “streamed” through this miracle of history? Firstly, by pondering just how close we are to the conclusion of history. Ironically, as our redemptive appetites have been whetted, Tishav b’av feels even more devastating. Our ancestors lived hundreds of years away from redemption. They dreamed and hoped, but it remained elusive and distant. Though they imagined caressing the stones of the Kotel and kissing the dust of a blessed land, they lived trapped
lives, dispersed across continents, and strewn across time. We are living at the doorstep of history. As we pray that “our eyes should witness the return to Zion” we are haunted by the prospect that those eyes will go dark before redemption concludes. Will we miss these epic scenes by a mere ten years? Will redemption happen soon after we have departed this world? These disturbing possibilities didn’t preoccupy our ancestors, but they should worry us, and they should vex our spirit on Tisha b’av. Easy to celebrate, harder to yearn Though we generally rejoice our historical achievements, on Tisha b’av we grieve that, though we are so close, there is still so much more that we hope for. Tisha b’av is part of the ongoing attempt to calibrate a redemptive mindset somewhere between triumph and longing. It is easy to be grateful for what we have received, but how deeply do we long for that which remains beyond our historical grasp? If, year-round, we celebrate our return home, Tisha b’av is a day to “long” and to yearn for comprehensive redemption. Celebration and longing go hand in hand.
MODERN HATRED
Our return to Israel in the 20th century ignited a firestorm of opposition to Jewish presence in Israel. We face physical violence, international condemnation, and accusations of moral hypocrisy. Much of this opposition is just a manifestation
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
of classic anti-Semitism dressed in the costume of contemporary politics. However, opposition to Jewish settlement in the land of Israel is a separate form of animosity and Tisha b’av is responsible for this resentment as well. We inhabited this land thousands of years ago and were on the verge of creating the kingdom of Hashem. This kingdom of G-d would have beckoned all humanity to Yerushalayim to bask in the divine presence. We would have been the “rock stars” of history, the people who re-introduced the world to Hashem and brought them to his doorstep. We forfeited that chance on Tisha b’av, and it has been a long odyssey home. The long road home has been fraught with anger and opposition. One day the world will once again embrace our presence in this land and celebrate Jews in Yerushalayim. The world is still broken and still resists us. We broke our world on Tisha b’av and until that fracture fully heals, we cry. Tears that flow through the epic events of the 20th century are more relevant and more authentic.

Refusing to Be Comforted BY RABBANIT SALLY MAYER
This week we prepare for Tisha B’Av, the day we mourn the loss of the Beit HaMikdash and many other tragedies we have endured as a people over the centuries. Next week is Shabbat Nachamu, when Hashem calls to us to end our mourning. But how can we be comforted? Our Beit HaMikdash has been gone for almost 2,000 years and antisemitism is on the rise all over the world; how do we accept comfort? When speaking of the challenge of being comforted, there are two places in Tanach where almost the exact same language is used. The first is when Ya’akov is mourning bitterly over the loss of Yosef, whom he thinks was killed by a wild animal. The Torah describes that all of Ya’akov’s children tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted: וַ יְ ָמ ֵאן לְ ִה ְתנַ ֵחםand said he will go to his grave mourning over his lost son
(Bereishit 37:35). The only other place in Tanach where the same phrase occurs is Yirmiyahu 31:15: “So says Hashem, a voice is heard on high, wailing, bitter weeping, Rachel is crying over her children. – ֵמ ֲאנָ ה לְ ִה ָּנ ֵחםshe refuses to be comforted over her children for they are gone.” Here we encounter our matriarch Rachel weeping over her children who have been sent into exile. She cannot accept comfort over her lost sons and daughters. What do these two cases have in common, and why is the same language used only in these two places? First, they are the couple Ya’akov and Rachel, both crying over their children who have left and not returned. In fact, both of these cases involved children who were exiled from their homes. Moreover, in neither case is there proof that they have died – Yosef’s body was not found, and Rachel’s children have been exiled
Devarim
and she does not know what has become of them. Rashi makes a deep psychological comment in the Ya’akov story, suggesting that the reason that Ya’akov could not be comforted was that Yosef was still alive. If Yosef had truly died and been buried, his father would have mourned that terrible tragedy, but would have had the closure (to use modern terminology) that would have allowed him to continue living. Since Yosef was still alive, he could not be forgotten. I’d like to suggest that the same is true for Rachel in Yirmiyahu’s telling of her bitter crying. Rachel cannot be comforted over the loss of her children because they, too, are not gone forever. They will return. In fact, the next two pesukim say, “So says Hashem, stop your voice from crying and your eyes from tearing, for there is a reward for your actions, says Hashem, and they will return from enemy land. And there is hope for your future, says

of Ammon. The nation then successfully defeated the other Emorite king, the mighty Og, king of Bashan, conquering his territory.
3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 1:22-38
In the 40th year after leaving Egypt, towards the end of his life, Moshe gathers the nation together and rebukes them, alluding to the many places where they made mistakes since leaving Egypt (Rashi). Moshe recalls the time spent at Mount Sinai after receiving the Torah, and that the nation could have gone from Sinai straight into the Land of Cana’an. At that stage, Moshe realised that he needed assistance to lead such a big nation.
2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 1:11-21
Moshe therefore told the people to appoint judges over sub-groups of 1000, 100, 50 and 10 men. He told those judges to be fair and brave in their work, and that any dispute too difficult to resolve

Hashem, and the children will return to their boundaries.” Next week, when Hashem calls to us in the moving haftarah, “Nachamu, nachamu ami”, He is telling us that after all of those generations of crying, of never giving up on the dream of the return to Zion, Ya’akov and Rachel’s children will be back. We may have been exiled long ago, but we have kept alive the hope of returning. And just as Yosef ultimately reunited with his father, we too are coming home, as we witness the ingathering of the exiles back to Israel as described in the prophecies. That is the comfort that Hashem promises Rachel, and we pray it will continue to unfold in the years to come.
Moshe recalls the sin of the spies. The people had approached Moshe 38 years earlier, wanting to send a mission to inspect the Land. Moshe agreed and selected 12 leading men, one from each tribe. Upon their return, Yehoshua and Calev spoke positively, but the other spies persuaded the people that going into the Land was impossible, due to the giants and the strongly fortified cities. Moshe’s attempts to reassure the people of G-d’s protection when they would enter the Land were rejected. G-d then decreed that the generation who had accepted the negative report of the ten spies would die in the wilderness and not enter the Land. Point to Consider: Why did Moshe agree to sending spies, if he would later rebuke them for the mission? (see Rashi to 1:23)
4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 1:39-2:1
Those aged under 20 at the time of the sin of the spies would be allowed to enter the Land. Despite Moshe’s discouragement, some of the people then attempted to enter the Land, despite Moshe’s warning that G-d would not now allow them to enter. They refused to listen and were

brutally crushed by the Emorites. The nation wept and then turned back towards the Sea of Reeds.
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 2:2-30
Moshe then recalls that 38 years later, the Israelites turned northwards and passed by the descendants of Esav in Seir, making sure not to start a war with them, nor to take any provisions without payment. The nation then headed towards the Moabite desert. G-d instructed Moshe not to start a conflict with Moab. Conversely, on their march towards the Land, G-d instructed them to pass through the land of Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, albeit this might lead to a war.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 2:31-3:14
Sichon came out to wage war. The Israelites destroyed him and his nation, taking his entire land, with the exception
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Moshe apportioned the land taken from Sichon and Og to the tribes of Gad and Reuven and some of the tribe of Menashe (as detailed in parashat Matot – see Bemidbar 32). However, the men of these tribes were still required to enter the Land of Cana’an to fight with the rest of the nation. Moshe told his successor Yehoshua that just as G-d had helped them to defeat Sichon and Og, so too He would help them in their conquest of the Land.
HAFTARAH CHAZON
This haftarah, taken from the beginning of Yeshaya (Isaiah), is the third of the three ‘haftarot of tribulation’ and is always read on the Shabbat before Tisha B’Av. The prophet relates G-d’s rebuke of the nation for rebelling against Him and bringing animal offerings without actually addressing their sinful ways. The verses of rebuke are traditionally read to the tune of Megillat Eicha (Lamentations), which is recited on Tisha B’Av. Yet the haftarah ends with the hopeful message that Zion “will be redeemed with justice”.

The Spiritual Concept of Beauty BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN
In a world where beauty is often misunderstood, it’s important to understand the deep spiritual nature and purpose of this powerful and fundamental concept. To do so, let us trace the spiritual concept of beauty back to the creation of man, before Adam HaRishon’s sin.
ADAM HARISHON
Before Adam sinned, he looked nothing like you or I do today. When we look at one another, all we see is flesh and bone, but if you looked at Adam before he sinned, his appearance was angelic, transcendent, luminescent. The Midrash says that he wore kosnos ohr (skin of light). When you looked at Adam, you didn’t see his body but saw Adam himself, i.e., his neshamah. When you look at a light bulb, all you see is radiant luminescence; only if you look very closely can you just make out the surface of the bulb. The same was true regarding Adam; he was luminescent. Only if you looked very closely could you just make out his physical body. His body was transparent, with the outside loyally and fully reflecting his inner self. This is true
beauty, where the inner and outer melt into a oneness, where the physical perfectly reflects the inner spirituality; where the physical projects something much deeper than itself. Beauty is the harmony and synthesis of different components, resulting in something infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. When Adam sinned, however, the world fell, and Adam’s body fell as well. The physical no longer revealed the spiritual; it now hid it instead. Now, when we look at each other, we don’t see our true selves; all we see is a physical body. What was once light is now darkness. People can’t see your inner world, your thoughts, your consciousness, your emotions, or your soul; all they see is your external body. Now, in order to reveal yourself to other people, you must actively use the physical to reveal the spiritual. Only through your words, actions, facial expressions, and body language can people gain a glimpse into who you truly are. The body used to be incandescent and reveal, but now it only hides. It is up to us to reveal what lies ahead.
SARAH IMEINU
After the sin of Adam HaRishon, genuine beauty became elusive, found only in a select few individuals. Sarah Imeinu was one of the few who achieved this lofty feat. We know that Sarah was physically
beautiful, and that her beauty was not just of an ethereal, spiritual nature. When Sarah and Avraham descended to Mitzrayim (Egypt), the Mitzrim (Egyptians), and even Pharaoh himself, desired her (Rashi, Bereishis 23:1). The Egyptians were steeped in immorality, interested only in beauty that ran skin deep. However, we know that Sarah Imeinu was immensely spiritual as well and that she reached the loftiest of spiritual levels (Rashi, Bereishis 23:1). At the end of Parashas Noach, Rashi explains that one of Sarah’s other names was Yiskah (Bereishis 11:29). A name always reflects essence, so we must ponder the meaning of this name and what it reveals about Sarah Imeinu. “Yiskah” means transparent, and Sarah’s true beauty lay in her transparency. Her inner beauty completely permeated and was loyally reflected through her physical body. Genuine beauty is embodied in transparency, where the physical body reflects the inner, spiritual beauty, something infinitely greater than anything external. True beauty is oneness, where the physical and spiritual melt into a oneness; where the physical doesn’t hide the inner self but reveals it. This is why the shoresh (root) of the word “Yiskah” is also the shoresh of the word “schach,” the roof of the sukkah. According to halachah (Jewish law), the schach is the most important (ikar) part of the sukkah, which is why “schach” shares the same shoresh as “sukkah.” What is the connection between transparency and schach? The answer lies in one of the deepest themes of Sukkos. Sukkos is about seeing past the illusion of independent self-security, recognizing that Hashem is our true source of protection. This is why we leave our sturdy homes and enter a diras arai, a temporary dwelling place. We show that our faith and trust lie in Hashem, not our “safe” homes. While on the surface, our security and safety seem to come only from our own efforts and hishtadlus, when we look past the surface, we recognize that everything comes from Hashem. This is why the schach is the primary (ikar) part of the sukkah; it trains us to see past the surface. The schach must be transparent, allowing us to see the stars at night. It must also be loose enough to allow some sunlight and rain to enter the sukkah. Only a transparent surface allows us to truly see what lies beyond it.
FROM LIGHT TO SKIN
The Midrash explains that, originally, Adam wore kosnos ohr (spelled with an aleph) — garments of light (Torah Temimah, Bereishis 3:21). After he sinned, Hashem clothed him in kosnos ohr (spelled with an ayin) — garments of skin (Bereishis 3:21). When spelled with an aleph, ohr is light; when spelled with an ayin, ohr is a hide, the skin of an animal. What is the deeper meaning behind this? Rav Eliyahu Dessler explains the meaning behind the descriptions of Adam’s clothing according to the idea we just developed. Originally, Adam’s body
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

was transparent, emanating the light of his soul. Light reveals, and his original skin revealed his true, inner self. Once he sinned, however, his body no longer revealed the spiritual, but only its physical surface. The word ohr, when spelled with an ayin, means animal hide. This skin, like its English translation, hides the soul, the inner self. The letter aleph is the first letter of the aleph-beis. It is the letter of oneness, representing transcendence, spirituality, and Hashem, our ultimate Source and root. The letter ayin represents the physical, limited expression of the aleph. This is why the word “aleph” means to elevate or lift to a higher spiritual dimension, while ayin means eye. The eye, naturally, sees only the physical; however, it has the potential to see past the physical surface of reality, to source itself back to the original light of the aleph. That is why the word ayin is also connected to the word “maayan” (a wellspring). A wellspring has a limiting surface. Through effort, though, one can peer beneath that surface, revealing something endlessly deep behind it. By delving into the depths of the wellspring, one can draw forth water — the source of life (See Bereishis 26:19). Ayin therefore reflects the concept of reaching that which is hidden, higher, and transcendent. However, the ayin also has the potential to corrupt, causing us to see nothing more than the physical surface without sourcing our physical sight back to any higher source. This is why the Hebrew word iver, spelled the same way as the word ohr, means “blind.” One who sees only the physical surface is blind to the truth; one who sees only the surface does not see at all. This is the unique challenge of sight. We can use it to see the physical as an expression of the spiritual, or we can become trapped by the lure of the surface, ignoring its higher root. In our next article, we will develop this idea further and understand the deeper spiritual purpose of clothing. Devarim Devarim Word Seach Last week we finished the fourth book of the Torah; Bamidbar. This means…. Drumroll please, it’s time to start the fantastic and final book – Devarim. The first parsha, Devarim herself is Moshe’s speech to Klal Yisrael. Remember how Hashem said that Moshe would die after the battle with Midyan? Now’s the time, so Moshe gives one last speech to inspire us to keep the mitzvois and stay loyal to Hashem. He spoke for over 30 days! Moshe goes through everything that happened to us in the Midbar. We go all the way back to when Hashem gave us the Torah!!! Hashem Himself, opened up the heavens and made us His people and gave us the most precious gift of all. That’s not all He did, just in the midbar; He sent the pillar of fire and the column of cloud to guide us, gave us the clouds of glory which made the ground soft for us to walk on and protected us from dangerous animals, snakes, scorpions and our enemies, made all our clothes stay clean and grow with us, dropped down the marvellous mann that tasted of whatever you wanted without having to go to the bathroom, we had the well of Miriam and if the list isn’t long enough yet, every time our enemies attacked, Hashem saved us. and we were on the way to the promised land. How did we thank Hashem? By complaning! Moaning
and groaning, we didn’t appreciate all the amazing things we had. Hashem interrupts Moshe before he can carry on with the telling off. Hashem doesn’t want the speech to be too strict so Moshe gives us a brachah that we should have many children and become a great people. It wasn’t just Hashem we weren’t grateful to. Moshe worked his socks off for us and look at all the trouble he had! Rebellions, Korach, the eruv rav… we even caused him to die before he got into eretz Yisrael. Moshe recaps the story of the meraglim, the spies which is the reason it has taken 40 years to reach Israel. Next Moshe gives us a message from Hashem, three nations we must not touch. Edom because they are Yakov’s brother’s children, Moav and Ammon. The last two are because Rus, King David’s grandmother and Na’amah, King Shlomo’s wife will be converts from those nations. Moshe finishes off this parsha by telling the story of how Sichon tried to attack us but Hashem moved the mountains together to squash them. Then Sichon came with an army and we beat him! Then we had to fight their neighbours Og and Reuvain, Gad and half of Menashe decided to live in their part instead. That’s all for now!

Low and slow or high and fast? The age old question. Do you cook your meat fast or slow? The simple answer is, most of the time, either. The longer answer is it depends on your cut. The more a muscle is used, the tougher it gets. On the other hand, it is usually very flavourful so you don’t want to be dismissing those tougher cuts, just cooking them right. Cuts from the brisket, chuck or shin benefit from a long cooking time to break up the fibres and tenderise the meat. So low and slow wins the game. It will also benefit from a cooking liquid to stop it drying out. Other muscles that are not used as much like rib or london broil are softer and need to be cooked quickly on a high heat in order that it doesn’t dry out and turn into shoe leather (that’s the technical term). You want to usually cook these cuts ‘dry’ with just some spices on a griddle. But it’s not really either or, of course there is middle ground, for instance when roasting a larger piece of meat like a rib joint or prime bola. Then it’s kind of middle heat, middle speed. These joints do well with a very high heat for a few minutes in lieu of searing it in a pan first then cook at a lower temperature for approximately 20 minutes per lb or until the internal temperature reaches 56 degrees C for rare, 65 for medium and 72 for shoe leather (well done). So I guess the real answer is, it depends. Our friendly shop staff are always happy to advise you on the best way to cook your meat.
