OFSTED REPORT HAS ‘SERIOUS RAMIFICATIONS’ FOR ALL ORTHODOX JEWISH SCHOOLS, WARNS CHINUCH UK BY ADAM MOSS

Chinuch UK, an organisation that helps to protect Orthodox Jewish school values, have strongly backed Governors at Yesodeh Hatorah Senior Girls’ School in Stamford Hill, after the school was slammed in an Ofsted report, where they admonished the school for not meeting national curriculum requirements. Inspectors downgraded the Stamford Hill-based school from ‘Good’ to ‘Inadequate’ in a negative report published on Tuesday. The state-funded secondary school was criticised for ineffective safeguarding and teaching standards amongst various issues. Authors added that school leaders, including Principal Rabbi Avraham Pinter had not met their “statutory duty” to provide impartial career advice so pupils can make informed decisions about future aspirations. Yet in recent years Yesodeh has

been viewed among the elite of educational establishments in the Orthodox community. Only a few months ago Hackney Learning Trust viewed the school “outstanding” offering praise for many aspects deemed below standard by Ofsted. “This report says more about Ofsted than it does about our school,” commented Theo Bibelman, Chairman of Governors, in a statement. “Even a cursory reading of the report shows that Ofsted has downplayed our successes and academic achievements whilst showing a clear disrespect for the Orthodox Jewish community.” He added: “We were appalled at the way the Ofsted Inspectors treated our staff and students and we have made that clear to the relevant Government authorities. “It seems that unless we agree with the secularist agenda of Ofsted London then we cannot comply

Prince William calls for a “lasting” peace and learns about the terrors of the Holocaust BY DAVID SAFFER Prince William has called for a “just and lasting peace” during his historic five-day Middle East tour of region. His journey to Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Occupied Territories has been hailed a success in many quarters. During a packed schedule in Israel, he met people from a cross-section of life aside from politicians and dignitaries. The Duke of Cambridge began his Israeli tour at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem on Tuesday morning and was clearly moved by what he learnt about the Holocaust. During a tour of the memorial museum the second in line to the throne met two Holocaust survivors, rescued on the kindertransport and laid a memorial wreath to commemorate the six million Jews murdered during the Shoah. Viewing first-hand a display of shoes in the Holocaust museum, the Prince noted he was trying to comprehend the scale of what he was viewing. Prince William is aware his great-grandmother, Princess Alice, is recognised by Yad Vashem as ‘Righteous Among the Nations’

after hiding three members of the Cohen family - Rachel, Tilda and Michelle - in her Palace in Athens during the Nazi occupation of Greece. Prior to his departure he left a poignant message to Yad Vashem’s visitors. In it he noted: “It has been a profoundly moving experience to visit Yad Vashem today. It is almost impossible to comprehend this appalling event in history. Every name, photograph and memory recorded here is a tragic reminder of the unimaginable human cost of the Holocaust and the immense loss suffered by the Jewish people. The story of the Holocaust is one of darkness and despair, questioning humanity itself. But the actions of those few who took great risks to help others are a reminder of the human capacity for love and hope. I am honoured that my own great grandmother is one of these righteous among the nations. We must never forget the Holocaust – the murder of 6 million men, women and children, simply because they were Jewish. We all have a responsibility to remember and to teach future generations about the horrors of the past so that they can never reoccur. May the millions of Jewish people remembered

culminating in a visit, which will be very symbolic and interesting for me in the Old City in Jerusalem.” During the meeting, there was also a light-hearted moment as they talked about football. And the Prince had a gift as he presented the Liverpool and Beitar Jerusalem fanatic with a signed Stephen Gerrard shirt to mark the visit. Travelling on to Jaffa to visit the Equaliser football UJIA-programme run by the Peres Centre for Peace, Prince William donned casual clothes where he participated in a penalty shoot-out with Jewish and Arab children, scoring twice. He also met with Mayor Ron Huldai in Tel Aviv, stopping off at Frishman beach where he chatted to sun-worshipers and Footvolley players prior to a reception hosted by Ambassador David Quarrey at the British Embassy in Ramat Gan. During his address, Prince William said that visiting Yad Vashem was a profoundly moving experience that brought back powerful memories of his visit to Stutthof concentration camp. Referring to his great-grandmother, Princess Alice, he noted that her story was a “matter of great pride for my whole family”. He added: “We must never forget what was

No public statements were made following an audience with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara at their official residence. But Israel’s Head of State President Reuven Tivlin at his official residence said it was an honour to welcome him to the State of Israel and Jerusalem. “You are writing a new page in history,” President Rivlin reportedly said. “You are the first one to come not only as a Prince but also as a pilgrim to the Holy Land, Jerusalem.” He added, “You have left us a great administration because we adopted most of your tradition and we really appreciate the connection between our two people and two States, the cooperation and the friendship. Making reference to the Middle East peace process, Israel’s President asked Prince William to convey a message of peace to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas when he visits Ramallah during his visit. “Tell him that it is about time, that we have to find a way together to build confidence,” he reportedly said before sending regards to the Royal Family. Addressing President Rivlin in a televised audience, Prince William expressed his gratitude for the reception received. “It’s my first visit to Israel and I’m very much looking forward to getting to meet as many Israelis as possible, understand Israeli history and culture over the next few days,” he said. “I had a very moving tour around Yad Vashem this morning which really taught me quite a lot more than I thought I already knew about the true horrors to the Jews in the war so I very much appreciated the time everyone gave to showing me around the museum.” Prince William added, “I, like you, look forward to understanding lots about the region and about hoping that peace in the area can be achieved. “I’m looking forward to really absorbing and understanding the different issues, the different cultures, the different religions

And I commit myself to doing this.” He continued: “Israel’s remarkable story is partly one of remembering this terrible past but, also, looking forward to a much more hopeful future. There is – and I’ve seen it already – an essential vibrancy to this country. “From the early stories of the kibbutzim; to the revival of Hebrew as a living, modern language; to the hi-tech economies that we see around us here in Tel Aviv – the modern story of Israel is one of inventing, creating, innovating, and striding confidently into its future.” Commenting on the relationship between Israel and the United

I know I share a desire with all of you, and with your neighbours, for a just and lasting peace. “The United Kingdom stands with you, as we work together for a peaceful and prosperous future.” Prince William went on to visit Beit Ha’ir Museum, met Israeli start-up companies along with

Jewish and Arab activists involved in youth, education and social programs. The Middle East five-day tour began in Jordan, where he was greeted by Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II. Prime Minister Netanyahu greeted Prince William on his Facebook page before his arrival in Israel. “A first historic visit by a representative of the British Royal Family. Welcome, Prince William,” he noted. Tourism Minister Yariv Levin and Likud MK Amir Ohana welcomed Prince William at Ben Gurion Airport on Monday evening. Levin reportedly told him that there was no better time to be in the Holy Land than the World Cup as it would increase the England’s chances of winning. Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the World Cup final next month in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. The Israeli leader’s attendance could depend on whether he will be able to build on talks last month with the Russian premier. Other leaders including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have also been invited to the football finale on July 15. The BBC has announced that presenter Andrew Marr breached editorial guidelines when he commented that Israel had killed “lots of Palestinian kids on his Sunday morning politics show. The Andrew Marr Show was holding a discussion on a Syrian chemical weapons attack on civilians in an April 8 edition when he made the comments. “The Middle East is aflame again,” he noted. “I mean there’s lots of Palestinian kids being killed further south as well by Israeli forces.” The Mail on Sunday reported that anti-Semitism campaigner Jonathan Sacerdoti complained Marr made reference to Israel after the

“Neither do we forget the great lesson of the need to stand against a murderous ideology in time. “It is unbelievable, but 73 years after the Holocaust, there is a country in the Middle East, Iran, that is calling for the destruction of anther six million Jews.”

This was irrelevant to the conversation on Syria… and also actually completely false.” BBC head of executive complaints, Fraser Steel, upheld part of the complaint as guidelines require output to be ‘well sourced’ and ‘based on sound evidence’. “In the absence of any evidence to support the reference to ‘lots’ of children being killed at the time of transmission, it seems to us to have risked misleading audiences on a material point,” he noted. “We therefore propose to uphold this part of your complaint.”

Herzog is new Jewish Agency Chairman BY ADAM MOSES

Jewish Agency chairman Isaac Herzog wants to rebuild the relationship between Israel and Jews around the world. Herzog succeeds Natan Sharansky and begins this four-year term on August 1. A former chair of the Labour Party, was the opposition leader in the 20th Knesset. His appointment was ratified by the Leadership Nominating Committee comprising leaders of the Jewish Federations of North America, Keren Hayesod-UIA and World Zionist Organisation. “The relationship between Israel and the Jews in the Diaspora have suffered a severe blow over the few past years and we have to do whatever we can to mend them,” Herzog reportedly told Ynet.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu choice, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, was not selected. “It’s no secret there was tension (between us),” he reportedly said. He added: “Eventually I was chosen by right and not by sufferance.” Discussing his role, Herzog noted a trip to the United States which illustrated one of the biggest issues of his tenure, intermarriage. “I saw that my friends’ children are married or are in relationships with non-Jewish partners, while their parents agonize over it and ask questions,” he reportedly said. “We are talking about every (Jewish) family in the US, millions. There has to be a solution, we have to rack our brains and see how we solve this great challenge.”. He added, “A Jew is a Jew is a Jew, no matter his denomination or the type of kippah he chooses to

wear or not to wear on his head. “I promise to work hard on promote Jewish unity and to partner with the Prime Minister and the government to achieve this crucial goal.” As for his vision, he added, “Diaspora Jews are essential to the State of Israel and vice versa.” Herzog will resign from his opposition post when he takes up the Jewish Agency role. “We are the only organisation whose leadership includes representatives of both the coalition and the opposition, of Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Jewry, and of Jewish communities around the world,” Sharansky reportedly told Herzog. “We are the independent voice of the Jewish people and, at the same time, our main partner is the government of Israel.

IDF responds to ongoing trouble on Gaza border BY ADAM MOSES Prince William might be in the midst of his whirlwind Middle East tour but Israel Defence Forces continues its fight against rockets attacks in Gaza. The IDF targeted a vehicle belonging to a Hamas military wing commander in the Neuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza Strip in the early hours of Wednesday (Ynet). At least 12 rockets were fired at Gaza border communities in response A reported three rockets were

intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system. No injuries were reported. An IDF spokesman confirmed that the Hamas operative was at a cell launching explosive and incendiary balloons when the army attacked it with an aircraft and tank. It was also noted that two observation posts in the northern Gaza Strip were hit. The spokesman added, “The Hamas terror organisation led a high-trajectory fire attack on the State of Israel. Hamas will pay for the terror and instability.” The first Code Red siren sounded

at a kibbutz in the Sha’ar Hanegev regional council. Throughout the night, sirens also sounded in Hof Ashkelon, Eshkol and Sdot Negev regional councils, and in Sderot. Tensions around Gaza continue to grow with incendiary balloons and kites causing fires in Israel territory. The IDF has fired warning shots near cells and bombed Hamas targets as the conflict continues. Firefighters contained over 40 fires last weekend. IAF attacked a cell launching incendiary balloons and balloon launch vehicle in the region. One Palestinian was reported to be critically wounded. Meanwhile, Israeli forces launched Patriot anti-aircraft at an incoming drone from Syria in the Golan Heights on Sunday. According to IDF sources, the unmanned drone returned to an area controlled by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces. “The air defense system, just like the detection system, identified the threat in advance, before it had crossed into Israeli territory,” noted IDF statement. “The IDF will not allow a violation of Israel’s sovereignty and will act against any attempt to harm its citizens.” The drones are used to try gain intelligence on the border.

“It is essential that we preserve both our independence and our partnership, and I wish you much success in that crucial endeavor.” Herzog, who hails from Tel Aviv, is the son of former Israeli president

Chaim Herzog, who also served as Israel’s United Nations ambassador in the 1970s. During that tenure, Isaac attended Manhattan’s orthodox Ramaz School.

Corbyn government will recognise Palestine State BY LEAH WAXLER Board of Deputies senior vice president Sheila Gewolb has called on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to be “even-handed” on the Middle East conflict. Her comments come after Corbyn said that a Labour Government would recognise Palestine as a State. The Labour leader has been touring camps in Jordan for Syrian and Palestinian refugees on his first international trip outside Europe. “Today I’ll visit the Al-Baqa’a refugee camp which was first created in 1968, where 100,000 Palestinians live,” he noted in a tweet last Saturday. “The next Labour government will recognise Palestine as a state as one step towards a genuine twostate solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.” “Mr Corbyn’s call for a two

state solution is consistent with our policy on the resolution of the conflict, but his continual one-sided pronouncements risk fatally undermining his potential to be future peacemaker,” said Ms Gewolb. “In an age of instability, we need the UK to be seen as an honest broker, not a megaphone protester. Mr Corbyn must decide which he wants to be and shape his message accordingly.” During the tour of Zaatari, Corbyn also criticised US President Donald Trump for recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. He described the US Embassy move as a “catastrophic mistake.” Corbyn added: “I think there has to be a recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people to their own State which we as a Labour Party said we would recognise in government as a full State as part of the United Nations.”

Chinuch UK finds it difficult to reconcile this with the facts that the school’s results are so excellent & that previous recent Ofsted inspections found the school to be good with outstanding features. Chinuch UK calls on the Government to recalibrate the way it inspects faith-based schools, and particularly calls for the Ofsted Inspectorate in the London region to learn from practice in other English regions. This Government is faith-friendly, and faith-school friendly. We are optimistic that we

can work with the Government’s support to bring the unfortunate conflict between the Orthodox Jewish community and Ofsted to an end. Rabbi Pinter wrote to Theresa May last March to intervene regarding the re-inspection following a complaint from Humanists UK, who he felt were “clearly directing” OFSTED how resources should be spent. Yesodeh’s principal accused inspectors of “aggressively grilling” staff about their education of students despite the “high performance of students borne out in results.” Rabbi Pinter also criticised the time inspectors spent in its library “analysing our approach to texts”.

community. The ‘legal’ ruling has been welcomed in many quarters but there is outrage towards the divisive coroner by local residents and councilors about the financial cost incurred. Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl has urged Jewish residents in North London to make their voices heard at the Inner North London Coroner consultation on case prioritisation at Camden “It is critical that as many Jewish residents turn out as possible, not just those who live in the affected boroughs - Camden, Hackney, Islington and Tower Hamlets, but anyone who could use a hospital, such as the Royal Free, in that area,” she said. Ms van der Zyl added, “At a time

of tight budgets across local government, residents deserve a senior coroner they can rely on not to needlessly waste taxpayer’s money and to treat all residents fairly.” Judges at the High Court ruled that the area’s senior coroner had unlawfully implemented a cab-rank rule, whereby cases would be processed on a first come first served basis. They argued that this was blind to the various needs of families including Jewish and Muslim families who require a quick release to allow for burial, and was therefore discriminatory. “While the judges said that it was possible to have some kind of policy regarding the ordering of cases, they called for ‘applied common sense’ and for Ms Hassell to use her

This he felt could not have been coincidental but “obviously directed.” And the publication by Humanists UK of the schools’ “well-known policy on redacting of texts” was inappropriate to the parent body. Rabbi Pinter expressed shock that OFSTED had performed a second inspection after a prior satisfactory visit in the presence of a Senior HMI for quality assurance purposed. “It is hugely disappointing that a fringe pressure group can influence so-called independent bodies,” he noted to the Prime Minister. “Our community has been targeted consistently and our staff and pupils are being intimidated by the deliberate disregard for cultural

sensitivities.” Rabbi Pinter noted that it was “progressively clear” faith groups were powerless to stop OFSTED’s “secularist” agenda. “It seems that no matter what positive noises we hear from the Government, OFSTED is determined to make our position as faith schools untenable,” he wrote. According to one shocking report, an inspector even asked one of the pupils if she thought the schools censorship of certain topics was similar to Nazi Germany. Thousands of Jews across the country have been campaigning against OFSTED in recent weeks and this only adds to the problems.

Coroner to pay £68,000 legal costs BY LEAH WAXLER

Controversial London Coroner Mary Hassell has been ordered to pay £68,000 legal costs after her “cab-rank” queuing policy for handling burials was ruled “unlawful” by the High Court last month. The ruling by Lord Justice Singh and Mrs Justice Whipple means Camden Council must foot the bills of Adath Yisroel Burial Society and Mrs Cymerman, also known as Ita Symons, a director of orthodox care home Schonfeld Square in Hackney, who were both represented by Asserson Law Offices. judgement,” said Ms van der Zyl. “We would rather she concentrate on accepting Camden Council’s offer of £80,000 to implement an outof-hours service and work with the community, which would relieve pressure and reduce the need for any ordering protocol.”

The Board called for Hassell to “consider her position” after Lord Justice Singh, sitting with Mrs Justice Whipple labelled Hassall’s policy “discriminatory”. This latest ruling will intensify the viewpoint.

El Al will eject passengers refusing to sit next to someone BY ADAM MOSES El Al will eject any passenger from a flight who refuses to sit next to another passenger CEO Gonen Usishkin announced in a statement on Monday. The instruction follows a delayed New York to Israel El Al flight by over an hour after four Charedi men refused to take assigned seats next to women last Thursday. Two women eventually moved in order to allow the flight to take off. The incident was documented on social media by Israeli rapper Khen Rotem who was on the flight. Noting the Charedi passengers would only speak to male attendants, Rotem posted on Facebook that an attendant eventually made it clear the passenger would have to leave the plane. He reportedly added that

other Orthodox passengers expressed “surprise and disgust” at the men’s behavior. Rotem also noted that attendants were dealing with “practical theology and personal faith versus the rights of the individual and civil order”. Twelve planes departed ahead of Flight 002. El Al addressed the issue in a statement, that was also posted to Rotem’s Facebook comments. It read, “We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any discrimination by passengers is absolutely forbidden. El Al flight attendants do everything that they can to provide service to a wide range of passengers and various requests and try to assist. All of this is done so that takeoff is on time and to take the passengers to their destination on schedule.”

After the postings, top Israeli company NICE Systems announced it would not fly employees with companies that discriminate against race, gender or religion. CEO Barak Eilam said on social media NICE would not fly with EL AL until it changed its “practice and actions discriminating women”. The decision disappointed EL AL. Usishkin responded in an explanatory statement that Eilam had made his decision “hastily without checking the facts”. “El Al personnel who dealt with the incident did so with due sensitivity,” he noted. “Anyone who flies on the national airline senses the values on which we built the company, an egalitarian company that makes no distinctions on the basis of religion, race or gender.

“For the removal of doubt, today I ordered that the procedures on this matter should be tightened, and in future any passenger who refuses to sit beside another passenger will immediately be removed from the flight.” Twelve months ago, an Israeli court ruled EL AL could not ask women to move seats to accommodate a man not wishing to sit next

to a woman. The ruling followed a case by Holocaust survivor and retired lawyer Renee Rabinowitz. The judge ruled the airline must declare it is forbidden for a crew member to ask a passenger to change seats at the request of another passenger based on gender. El Al staff received training on how to deal with such an incident.

80-year-old Kindertransport survivor cycles from Berlin to London 42 cyclists arrived in London this week having ridden 600 miles from Berlin. The riders followed the route taken by the Kindertransport rescue operation orchestrated by World Jewish Relief which saved 10,000 children from Nazi Europe 80 years ago. 80-year-old cyclist Paul Alexander was one of the youngest children to come on the Kindertransport. He has ridden the whole way with his son and grandson. Many of the riders include the children’s descendants retracing the journey taken by their parents and grandparents across Germany, Holland and the UK. The Kindertransport 80 Commemorative Ride began in Berlin on Sunday.

Paul Alexander was just 18 months old in 1939 when his mother put him into the arms of a volunteer nurse to be taken to the UK. Paul was cared for in a home with other children for three years before being reunited with his parents who managed to escape Germany before the war. He moved to Israel in the 1970s and completed the ride from Berlin to London with his son Nadav and grandson Daniel (14). Paul said: “For me, this is a culmination, a vindication and a celebration of my life. 79 years ago I was sent as a child of one and a half from Germany – which was a country of persecution and hatred – to a country [the UK] where I found freedom and safety. That journey was the most significant I have ever

made, and ever will make, in my whole life. It enabled me to live a normal life with my parents, after we were reunited. “The journey that I’ve completed today is a victory over oppression and over everything that I was sent away from. I can’t think of a more poignant and meaningful thing than doing this with my son and grandson. This is my answer to Adolf Hitler. This is my chance to say thank you to World Jewish Relief for orchestrating the Kindertransport.” World Jewish Relief’s Andrea Frankenthal who organised the bike ride said: “It was such an inspiration to see how much the riders put themselves through to commemorate this historical event. I spent the whole week in awe of

their spirit and endurance and felt very privileged to be part of it. We are hugely grateful to them all and for the staggering amount of money

they’ve raised for our programmes which will transform the lives of hundreds of vulnerable Jews in Eastern Europe.”

We already have an incredibly talented team working at Tribe and this appointment is a perfect fit. Our mission is to create a future for our communities through engaging, educating and inspiring the next generation – Rav E is perfectly placed to help us do just that.” Rabbi Ebrahimoff brings with him his 15 years’ experience at the Independent Jewish Day School, latterly as the Headteacher presiding over the school’s ‘Outstanding’ rating by OFSTED. Rabbi Ebrahimoff will work in partnership with The US’ Jewish Living Senior Rabbi, Michael Laitner, Tribe Rabbi, Eli Levin, and Tribe Head of Education, Sharon Radley. He will be responsible for innovating and delivering creative activities for schools and local communities, forging links between the two, as well as large-scale central Tribe initiatives.

His role is expected to keep him on the move; he plans to spend up to 12 Shabbatot annually in US communities or on US and Tribe programmes including residential Shabbatonim and camps, both within and outside the UK. Rabbi Ebrahimoff said: “The growing reputation of Tribe’s work is something I want to be a part of. This is an extremely exciting role for me and I am very much looking forward to engaging a huge number of young Jews with the richness of our heritage. I want to inspire the next generation with a real connection to Jewish values rooted in a love of Torah and Israel.” Rabbi Ebrahimoff is married to Reut (known as Tutti), with 5 children.

Tribe have announced this week the appointment of one of the Jewish community’s most talented and well-respected educators. In September, Rabbi Cobi Ebrahimoff (widely known as Rav E) will become the Tribe Rabbi responsible for all of the organisations programming activity. David Collins, United Synagogue Director of Jewish Living said: “Rabbi Ebrahimoff is one of the Jewish community’s star educators.

Seven adrenaline junkies took to the skies for Manchester charity The Fed last week at Black Night Parachute Centre in Lancashire, jumping from over 11,000ft to raise funds for the organisation’s vital services. The group were kitted up and paired with their instructors before heading off into clear morning skies, along with a few butterflies for company! Russel Weisberg, whose Aunty Sybil was until recently a resident in Moorview Independent Living at Heathlands Village, said “Butterflies were starting to go in my stomach! Sitting on the edge of a building for an abseil is one thing... sitting on the edge of a plane is something else!” As the thrillseekers hurtled back to earth at speeds of over 140mph, their fear disappeared and was replaced by pure exhilaration. “It

“That was absolutely phenomenal,” said Tami. Karen Morse, The Fed’s Charity Box shop Manager in Cheetham Hill, described the jump as “one of the best things I’ve ever done.” Rounding off the event as a real team effort, Fed Chairman Mark Adlestone also went along for the ride, describing his experience as “better than I’ve remembered!” The event, which is expected to raise £10,000 was a huge success according to Fed Fundraising Manager Rochelle Broman. “Our fundraisers were all incredible - they were so brave and committed. Donations are still coming in and we are so proud of them.” Having landed safely, all participants were awarded with a special Fed certificate and an edible Fed medal, reading “I Jumped For The Fed 2018”.

“From Slavery To Freedom” – A two-part biopic of Natan Sharansky Premieres At The Knesset A two-part documentary that vividly brings to life the struggles experienced by Soviet-era Jews received a recent premiere at a meeting of the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs. Produced by the Israeli TV Channel 9 with support from Genesis Philanthropy Group, Gazin Family Fund and other sponsors, the documentary “From Slavery to Freedom” explores the struggle for freedom by Soviet Jews through the life story of Natan Sharansky. It tells the story of how Sharansky

was imprisoned in the Soviet Union for nine years before being granted a hard-won freedom and making aliyah to Israel.љ Sharansky would become Chairman of the Executive of the Jewish Agency and receive the Israeli Prize, the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Together with more than 150 guests, the premiere in the Knesset Auditorium was attended by esteemed Knesset members, including Chairman Yuli Edelstein, Minister of Immigration and Absorption Sofa Landver and Committee

Chairman, Dr. Avraham Neguise.љ They were joined by Gena Gazin, Chairman of Genesis Philanthropy Group’s Board of Directors, Ilia Salita, President and CEO of Genesis Philanthropy Group, Yuri Kaganovich, CEO of Channel 9,љ as well as businessman and philanthropist Aaron Frenkel. Almost 30 years since the gates of the Soviet Union were fully and finally open to Jewish emigration, “From Slavery to Freedom” tells the incredible story of a tiny Jewish minority’s determination to pursue freedom and their stand against a brutal totalitarian regime in spite of privations, social isolation, arrests and imprisonment. “The most important thing for me in this project is an opportunity to pass on the story to the younger generation. Our children should know what we did and at what cost freedom – ours and theirs – was obtained” – said Natan Sharansky during the post-screening discussion. The film was produced by 9.DOC studio from Channel 9, the Russian-language Israeli TV channel.

President and CEO of Genesis Philanthropy Group Ilia Salita said at the plenary discussion after the screening: “Looking back at the history of this struggle today, when Russian-speaking Jews around the world can decide for themselves, freely and willingly, how and where they want to live their Jewish lives, when Russian Jewish voices are heard throughout the whole Jewish

world, we realize how important it is that this tremendous story is preserved for posterity to inspire new generations of Jews and supporters of freedom everywhere. We are confident that this film will be a great contribution toward such goal, and are proud that Genesis Philanthropy Group has played a part in making it possible.”

What a busy Sunday for Catford and Bromley Synagogue Community! In the morning at Allerford road memorial grounds we celebrated Armed Forces Day and the service was jointly led by our minister Rev David Rome. At these grounds there is a Jewish memorial for the Jewish Service men who lost their lives in WW 1 & 2. We were able to say Kaddish at the memorial stone . In attendance were the local MP’s The Deputy Lord Lieutenant The Lewisham Mayor and Mayoress and several other dignitaries. This year our Cheder Children attended and one of the Parents Matthew Burchell held the Ceremonial Ajax Standard. It was a very

Straight from this ceremony several of us attended the Lewisham Faith walk this being the 4th year the original idea set up by our Synagogue Chairman Joe Burchell and the Police . Mr Burchell in welcoming everybody made everyone laugh by saying ‘This might be the last place of visiting today but actually it all started here with us’. Considering the attraction of the England Match and the very hot weather the turnout again was excellent only just below the 400 + of previous years. As one of the MP’s remarked Lewisham Faith Walk sets the standard for other Boroughs to follow.

Hidden Treasures at The Fed!

Lovely day

Painted treasure and ice cream rewards were the order of the day at The Fed as pirates of all ages came together in the gardens of Heathlands Village for a joint afternoon of fun! The activity, organised by The Fed’s Children’s Centre, and Heathlands Village Activity Centre, teamed together some of the oldest and youngest in our community, as they hunted in the sunshine for treasure. The treasure in question had been created weeks earlier at The Fed, when youngsters joined residents previously to decorate rocks in bright colours and patterns – which

were then hidden around the garden ahead of the treasure hunt. Carol Booth, Play Leader at the Children’s Centre, said “It was a fantastic afternoon. The children had so much fun, and the residents loved seeing them play, and joining in with their fun. Multigenerational activities are so important and beneficial for all, and this was a real success!” As the treasure was collected, ice cream rewards were given out to all those taking part.

AJR Welcomes Ruth Davidson MSP The Association of Jewish Refugees welcomed Ruth Davidson, Member of the Scottish Parliament and Leader of the Scottish Conservatives, as guest speaker at their annual Scottish Regional Meeting. Held at Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation. The attendees included AJR members, refugees who fled Nazi oppression. Addressing the guests Ms Davidson spoke about the importance of

preserving the testimonies of Holocaust refugees and survivors. She said “We cannot lose these personal stories because they are the access door to our wider European history. If kids growing up now are not told about what happened, they will never know. It is a way for the next generation, who have only ever seen the Holocaust in films, in the fictional world of Hollywood, to understand that it was real and happened to real people yet nobody at

the time thought it would happen then, and now nobody thinks it could happen again. “I started off wanting to be involved in telling people’s stories and that’s why I first became a journalist. I’ve always enjoyed asking people about their background and making wider points about society through the experiences of individuals. I have worked with a number of organisations which are testimony based including ‘Remembering Srebrenica’ which takes people from Scotland over to Bosnia to learn about the genocide over there and to come back and tell the story. Following the Holocaust we said never again, and then we saw it happen again.” AJR Chief Executive Michael Newman said “We were delighted that Ms Davidson was able to join us at our annual Scottish regional meeting. It was interesting to hear how she first became a journalist because of her interest in people’s life stories and how she values the work AJR are doing to capture and preserve the testimonies of our members, which we do through our Refugee Voices audio-visual archive and My Story life book project.”

Discussing “Jewish Education in the Secular world”

The British Friends of Gesher in partnership with the S&P Sephardi Community recently held an informative and relevant discussion at the S&P Synagogue, Lauderdale Road. The topic of “Jewish Education in the Secular world” was discussed in front of a full house by a stellar panel of Rabbi Joseph Dweck, Senior Rabbi of the S&P Sephardi Community, Mrs Rachel Fink, newly installed Head Teacher of

JFS and Rav Menachem Bombach, a revolutionary educator in the Haredi world, founder of “Midrasha Chasidit” in Beitar Illit and a leading Fellow of the Gesher Leadership Institute. The panel was chaired / moderated by Daniel Goldman, Chairman of Gesher. The evening was a resounding success and a full audio recording can be found on https://www.sephardi.org.uk/ panel-discussion-jewish-education/

supermarket has developed partnerships with reputable local suppliers of meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and baked goods to ensure that its customers are provided with fresh foods of an excellent quality. GoKo will also be supplying household goods which would make it a very real and appealing competitor of local non-Jewish supermarkets. GoKo is not yet up and running but most attractively, it is inviting potential customers to offer suggestions as to which foods it might supply that it has not perhaps considered as yet. It is also welcoming ideas as to how it may better serve customers by further ameliorating technological features on its website. Most new ventures

are eager to showcase their ideas and to advertise their products but the special allure of GoKo is the eagerness of its directors to address the wants, needs and concerns of shoppers. Unbelievably, Goko asserts that its prices will match those of the local shops. GoKo will not be charging shoppers more than other shops despite the fact that the nature of its online feature is more advantageous to and convenient for customers. The online shopping experience has become increasingly popular in recent years amongst Jewish and non-Jewish people alike. A problem that Jewish people encounter when shopping locally for Kosher products is that it is often difficult to find a parking space nearby and almost impossible to park without having to pay. Goko’s online feature

A novel initiative, the GoKo Supermarket, offers shoppers the opportunity to buy all the Kosher products that their hearts could possibly desire, without the need to leave the comfort of their living rooms! It is an online Kosher supermarket with an impressive variety of Kosher foods including an abundance of dietary products. The website’s particular allure is that it is very easy to use and seeing as it has a wide array of all Kosher products “under one roof”, it obviates the necessity to frequent individual shops such as bakeries or butchers which specialise in a certain type of product. Indeed, the

with a strong religious and ethical basis” Our Year 6 children ran a smoothie making stall and families enjoyed a bouncy castle, face painting, hair braiding and belly dancing. The highlight for many pupils was the chance to throw a wet sponge at our Head, Ms Metin.

circumvents this issue. Moreover, GoKo customers can deliberate on their purchases for as long they please without worrying that they will have to return to their car before their allotted time slot for parking expires. Additionally of course, the online feature of GoKo precludes the worst feature of the regular shopping experience which is the pre-requisite queueing at the till before one pays. GoKo is willing to deliver products to the UK mainland. It is in fact the first in the UK to provide a comprehensive online shopping experience to customers and it does anticipate supplying goods to Europe at some time in the future. The directors and staff of GoKo display an incredible work ethic. They are available for customers from the wee hours of the morning

until late at night. On Fridays, they can be reached by phone until half an hour before the Shabbat commences and on Motzey Shabbat, they are available from an hour after Shabbat ends. One can send them a message via the website too despite the fact that it is not yet set up to accept orders for purchases. In today’s world where people are extremely busy and harassed, GoKo offers people a stress-free and easy shopping experience. In modern times, when people are so technologically minded and are glued to their phones and laptops, GoKo’s online shopping venture has every chance of success.

Summer Wine Offers at Hadar ADVERTORIAL With summer weather finally (hopefully) settling in; now is the time for lighter style wines and Hadar of Edgware’s in-house wine store has a wide range of special offers, ranging from white wines through rose to some easy drinking but still satisfying reds for those who do not want to stray too far from the more powerful ‘fruit forward’ New World styles. Chile is well regarded for it’s approachable, well made and good value for money wines and we are offering Terra Vega Merlot and a lighter style young but well rounded Cabernet Sauvignon reduced from £12.99 to £8.99. Good quality red Bordeaux is a rarity under fifteen pounds but we have from the Entre Deux Mers area: Chateau les Riganes, which is mainly Merlot but ‘stiffened’ with some Cabernet Franc, a very good buy at £11.99 (normally £14.99) perfect for those who want something a tad lighter without sacrificing depth, elegant and well rounded as well! Whether for a clebration or just to liven up a family Shabbos and welcome to all those who are not keen on dry wines, Bartenura’s popular and effervescent Sparkling Moscato (in both the white and the elegant black bottled Rose) is reduced from £14.99 to £11.99. Perched high on the Lebanese border in an area rich with superb vineyards is Galil Mountain; enjoying nights cold enough and overall somewhat lower temperatures to bring success with one of Israel’s few Pinot Noirs, this lovely grape is medium bodied but with enough acidity to support a wide range of foods including stronger flavoured fish dishes. It is one of the few reds which should be chilled, making it ideal for a sultry Shabbos lunch, reduced from £19.99 to £14.99, at the same saving and price we also have their deep, fruity and nicely balanced rose.

To make a geographical leap, but keeping the Mediterranean ambience; we are offering two excellent wines (first kosher production in many centuries) from Valencia: Memorias del Rambam, the red is made from local speciality Boabal grapes delivering a young, approachable medium bodied wine, with lots of fruit but nicely structured and satisfying, the white is also made from local grape varieties bringing something new but with the minerality and crisp, rounded expression of a good Spanish white £17.99 reduced to £12.99. Continuing with the Western Mediterranean theme, we move north to the home of fine rose: from Provence in southern France, presented in an exquisite flask shaped bottle elegantly enscribed in white, comes Chateau Roubine, shimmering light salmon pink redolent ‘robe’ with floral notes, elegant and restrained. RRP: £19.99 reduced to £16.99. Adjacent to Galil Mountain is another much loved winery: Dalton, and their medium bodied, well made house Rose is a dependable choice at: £11.99 (normally £14.99). Another deeper, more full bodied Rose comes from Spain’s widely appreciated Ramon Cordova and is a Rose style interpretation of their very popular Rioja: ‘Rosado’ is made from the local variant of Granache, a very satisfying choice for those who like Rioja but want something more refreshingly seasonable, reduced from £14.99 to £11.99. Italy’s well know North East iconic fine wine area of Veneto is famous for Pinot Grigio which we have on offer from Primo V and the red equivalent using Pinot noir grapes, normally priced at £12.99 are both now on offer at a great value: £8.99. A slightly more sophisticated variety from one of Italy’s best regarded producers of kosher wines, comes the Borgo Reale Pinot Grigio RRP: £13.99 now £11.99.

Teperberg’s Impression Merlot is one of israel’s best value medium priced wines made from grapes grown near the winery in the Shomron/northern Judean Hills area, which produces great Merlot, which is on sale from £16.99, now just £12.99. There are many other great offers in store ranging from Yarden’s renowned Cabernet Sauvignon at just £19.99 (normal price: £27.99) across all price ranges and in particular, there is a good selection of very drinkable wines at under £10.00. Hadar is dedicated to providing personalised specialist wine advice and unique special offers; hosting regular wine tastings (including several of the special offers listed here) on Thursdays (11AM - 4PM, 8PM until 11PM), Fridays (10.30AM to 2.30PM) and Sundays (11AM to 3PM). I will be happy to help with all your wine, spirit and liqueur requirements. Other times by arrangement. Wishing you all a happy and healthy summer.

AJR plaque to Anna Essinger of Bunce Court School The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) announced the unveiling of a special commemorative plaque in honour of Anna Essinger at Bunce Court. Anna Essinger was the Founder and Headmistress of Bunce Court School. This year marks the 70th anniversary since the school closed in 1948. The ceremony was attended by a number of old ‘Bunce Courtians’ including renowned immunologist Leslie Brent and family-members of Ms Essinger. Anna Essinger was a German Jew born in 1879. In 1933, due to the impending Nazi threat in her homeland, she moved her school complete with its 66 mostly Jewish pupils to safety in England, re-establishing the institution in Otterden, Kent. The new school was called New Herrlingen School, after the school left behind in Germany, but came to

be known as Bunce Court. During the war Essinger also established a reception camp for some of the children who came to Britain on what became knowns as the Kindertransport, some of whom continued at the school. After the war Bunce Court School welcomed child Holocaust survivors who returned from the camps. These children were the last pupils to join the school which closed in 1948, by which time Essinger had taught and cared for over 900 children, most of whom called her ‘Tante Anna’ or ‘TA’, regarding her as a loved aunt rather than their school teacher. The Bunce Court School alumni were devoted to the school and organised reunions for 55 years after it closed. ‘Tante Anna’ remained in contact with many of them for the rest of her life, which she spent at Bunce Court. Her plaque states that

she is “remembered with affection by so many for her great foresight, progressive educational endeavour, wisdom and compassion.” Her motto was “Give children a hand, give them a chance.” 88 year-old ex-pupil Susi Davids said, “Tante Anna was fantastic. She was virtually blind but she noticed everything! The most important thing I learnt from her was that we were all equal and we all counted whatever our academic ability, as long as we did our best.” Ex-pupil Martin Lubowski, 87, said, “Tante Anna was wonderful but fierce! We all had to do manual work in the house and gardens as well as our academic work. I worked in the garden and Tante Anna gave me a book on flowers for my birthday. I thought it was for girls so I asked if she would change it for a dictionary, which she did. I can’t believe I had the guts to ask her!” Ex-pupil Heidi Goldsmith, 85, said, “I was here when I was seven years old. I loved it here. I learnt so many skills which I still use. Thanks to Tante Anna I can do everything around the house: tiling, laying floors, decorating – everything.” Founded in July 1941, the AJR represents and supports Jewish victims of Nazi oppression who rebuilt their lives in Britain. social and welfare services we are committed to perpetuating the legacy of the refugees and are prominent supporters of several leading institutions engaged in Holocaust memorialisation in the UK. AJR Trustee Frank Harding, said: “It is with great pleasure that we commemorate the life of Anna Essinger by recognising the devotion and care she gave to pupils at Bunce Court many of whom had been separated from their families. She is affectionately remembered by her former pupils who we are delighted were able to join us for this special occasion. We would like to thank Julia Miller, current owner of Bunce Court, for generously allowing us to install this plaque on her property. “Through the AJR plaque scheme we are honouring prominent Jewish émigrés from Nazism who made a significant contribution to

their adopted homeland. Last year we unveiled a plaque at the Edinburgh Festival to Sir Rudolf Bing for whom we have also installed a plaque at Glyndebourne. Other plaques have commemorated the biochemist and Nobel Prize winner Sir Hans Krebs, and Sir Ludwig Guttmann who founded the Paralympics. We have also installed a plaque on the site of the Cosmo restaurant in Swiss Cottage, in London, a famous meeting place for the refugees. “We believe that these commemorative plaques will help form a tangible link between the illustrious earlier residents and the local community as well as fascinating residents and visitors. As well as being instructive and informative, they bring the past into the present, and they perpetuate the memory of the person being honoured.”

fundraising to set up the service in her memory. The Evie’s Night Owls project provides support in the family home, allowing parents to get a night’s sleep, have time for a rest or for to enjoy an evening out together. The Bladons want to raise enough funds for the service to be regularly available to parents who need it. Fundraising events to date have

included ‘Dress to Impress,’ which saw a local business donate hundreds of party dresses that were sold at a special event. In just three months Sam and Lee raised £10,000. The Evie’s Night Owls committee also organised a Camp Simcha World Cup screening event for this week’s England game. Sam and Lee are the latest recipients of the Points of Light award, which recognises outstanding volunteers who are making a change in their community and inspiring others. Each day, someone, somewhere in the country is selected to receive the award to celebrate their remarkable achievements. In a personal letter to Sam and Lee, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Through ‘Evie’s Night Owls’ you are supporting many families in need of a respite break. The care

that your fundraising is supporting is helping families to spend valuable time together and parents to get a much needed restful night sleep. This work is a truly remarkable way of honouring Evie’s memory and you should be very proud of what you have achieved as a family.” Neville Goldschneider, chief executive of ‘Camp Simcha’ said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the Prime Minister’s Points of Light award has recognised Sam and Lee Bladon’s hard work, strength and relentless dedication to making ‘Camp Simcha’s Evie’s Night Owls’ respite service a reality. All of us at ‘Camp Simcha’ are grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know their beautiful little Evie - and we are humbled by the way Sam and Lee have taken such heartbreak and created something that will help so many others in Evie’s memory.” Sam and Lee said: “We are really humbled to receive this unexpected recognition, of the Prime Minister’s Points of Light award. After we lost our beautiful daughter Evie we wanted to find a way to honour and keep her memory alive, by helping others who are facing similar daily battles to the ones we experienced. “We set up the ‘Evie’s Night Owls’ committee to raise funds for an expansion of ‘Camp Simcha’s respite service. ‘Camp Simcha’ was there for us when we needed them

and it seems fitting that we are able to establish Evie’s legacy through them.” Sam and Lee are the 938th and 939th winner of the Points of Light award, which has been developed in partnership with the hugely successful Points of Light programme in the USA. Over 6,000 Points of Light have been awarded in the USA, and former Presidents have publicly supported the partnership with Points of Light UK. There is a similar cross-party approach to the UK programme and MPs from different parties often present their constituents with their Points of Light awards. Regardless of whether it’s a doctor restoring local monuments in her free time, a father teaching young people life skills, or a local musician giving a voice to lonely people, the Points of Light award honours shining examples of volunteering across the UK.

Ran Wernick’s child has cancer. After the diagnosis, Ran started to put on tefillin regularly. He didn’t own a set, so he would travel from his home in Haifa to an area where there is Chabad to use theirs. Since his son Ely was diagnosed, Zichron Menachem has been there for the entire Wernick family, offering guidance, support and care. Several weeks ago, Ran and his wife joined Zichron Menachem on a respite trip to London and Paris, along with 30 or so other families. In Paris, Ran came across a Chabad booth helping people lay tefillin outside of a local kosher restaurant. He put them on and his wife Etti explained to Zichron Menachem UK Director Eli Seliger how Ran had tried to lay tefillin daily since the cancer diagnosis. Eli knew of a programme run by the men’s organisation the Hebrew Order of David (HOD) to supply bar mitzvah boys in need with a talis, tefillin and lessons. He made a call and the HOD quickly gathered the funds for a new set of tefillin and a talis. They presented it to Ran one evening during the respite trip, and “there wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” Eli said. “It’s been several weeks since I received my new set of tefillin, and I’ve put them on every day since,” said Ran. “I made a promise to Eli and to Zichron Menachem and I

won’t forget it. We are now partners for life.” During the trip, singers Eli Tamir and Shloime Gertner along with Asaf Flumendorf treated the parents – who come from all backgrounds and levels of observance – to an inspirational kumzitz on motzei Shabbos kindly hosted by Yossi and Sharona Klein. In Israel, Zichron Menachem supports these parents and hundreds of others whose children have cancer. Many of the participants on the respite trip participated in the opening last week of a new hair and wig salon at the Jerusalem-based House of Dreams. Created in a former utility room, the new salon teaches children and young people with cancer how to care for their wigs, made from hair generously donated by women and girls in Israel, the UK, and around the world. The construction of the salon was made possible with funds raised by the HOD International. In the salon, mothers as well as siblings are also pampered with new hairstyles and manicures, helping them relax during this stressful time in their lives. Women and girls from the UK and around the world who would like to donate their hair to Zichron Menachem during a trip to Israel can come to the salon and have it cut there by professional hair stylists.

July 2018. Tickets are £110/head and include champagne, canapes and a seven-course tasting menu. Tickets can be purchased from Design My Night. 16 girls donate their hair for Zichron Menachem Recently 16 girls in London donated their hair to Zichron Menachem to make wigs for children with cancer in the UK and Israel. At the salon there was a party-like atmosphere, including food, drink and even free manicures and pedicures for the girls. North West London Jewish Day School students Mimi Selig and her best friend Olivia Bellau cut their hair and raised nearly £4,000 for Zichron Menachem. “We did it in memory of our friend Ella’s mum, who passed away from cancer this year,” said Mimi. “We wanted to help other girls and give them a chance to get a wig if they lost their hair.” In the last year alone, Zichron Menachem has made 177 custom-made wigs for children and adults suffering from cancer. It has also made 20 wigs in the UK in the last 12 months. If you or anyone you know has lost their hair as a result of cancer treatment and is in need of a wig, please contact Ali atali@zichronuk. org

Sandy Lerman

Tell us about yourself I’m Sandy Lerman, a 55-year old ex-primary school teacher and mother of two. I left teaching 4 years ago to become a private tutor for primary-aged children. How and why did you get into volunteering? I became involved in volunteering so that I could usefully use my free time before I start work in the afternoons. I particularly wanted to find voluntary work which would involve young people.

Who do you currently volunteer for and what do you do? I volunteer at Kenwood House. Primarily, I work with their Education Department to deliver and support their education programme which is extensive. When there is not programme on offer, I am an “explainer” - someone

Resource Tackles Women’s Job Search Challenges Overcoming typical challenges women face in returning to the workplace was the subject of a morning of presentations and workshops organised at JW3 by Resource. Over 40 women heard guest speaker Katy Fridman, founder of the successful Facebook group ‘Flexible Working for Mums Like Me (Dads Welcome!)’ speak about her own challenges, after having children, in finding a job that would meet her career ambitions and how

she overcame them. There were discussions and tips on how to successfully negotiate a flexible working arrangement, revamping a CV to deal with career gaps, nailing that job interview and taking advantage of social media in a job search. freely and willingly for something that I feel a close association with. I am happy and fulfilled and, also, I have learnt so much about art (about which I knew very little) because of the magnificent collection at Kenwood. I have also been able to add to my knowledge of the history of the 18th century. Kenwood House truly appreciate all volunteers and they make me feel valued, which is a great feeling.

LOCAL AND NATIONAL COVERAGE... THE ENTIRE PICTURE

Germany KO’d by VAR as Kane eyes ‘Golden Boot’ BY DAVID SAFFER Defending champs Germany have crashed out of the World Cup after a stunning, ignominious yet deserved defeat to South Korea in Russia. The four-time winners, and pre-tournament joint favourites, have been woeful throughout and fell to a brace of injury time goals, the first initially disallowed but overturned by the ‘Video Assistant Referee’. Kim Young-gwon and Ju Sejong entered World Cup folklore with the golden goals to knock out the most consistent team ever in the competition who exited at the group stage for the first time. Group stages have brought stunning displays, shocks and many VAR talking points. And the makeup of the top 16 nations will be known tonight after England and Belgium play their final group clash. Both sides are expected to make changes as both have qualified but the result will be a confidence booster for battles that lay ahead. England broke records galore against Panama in their second game to advance to the next stage of competition. Skipper Harry Kane followed in the footsteps of Sir Geoff Hurst and Gary Linekar in bagging a hattrick at a final’s in a 6-1 rout. Gareth Southgate’s team blew away the South Americans with a stunning first half performance for their biggest tournament victory in history.

Elsewhere, in Group A, after Russia’s impressive 3-1 win over Egypt, Uruguay joined the hosts in the knockout stage after a defensive blunder by Saudia Arabia ‘keeper Mohammed Al Owais allowed Luis Suarez to sweep home the only goal in his 100th international appearance for a second win. When the top-two met at the Samara Arena on a blistering afternoon, Suarez opened the scoring as free-scoring Russia came back down to earth with a mighty bump in a 3-0 defeat. Denis Cheryshev deflected a 25-yard strike by Diego Laxalt into his own goal, and after Igor Smolnikov received a second yellow card on 35 minutes, the South Americans dictated play. Cavani had the final say when he poked home the third goal late on. In the dead-rubber clash, Saudi Arabia came from behind for a 2-1 win against Mo Salah’s Egypt. Veteran 45-year-old ‘keeper Essam El Hadary became the oldest player to feature in a finals and saved Fahad Al Muwallad’s penalty but could not repeat his heroics to deny Salman Al Faraj and Salem Al Dawsari claiming the spoils. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fourth goal of the tournament to earn Portugal a hard-fought Group B win against Morocco at the Luzhniki Stadium. The Moroccons battled away but became the first team to exit the World Cup. Spain edged ahead of Portugal, on disciplinary points, after a defensive clearance by Ramin

Rezaeian ricocheted off Diego Costa into an empty goal. The Spaniards dominated possession, as expected, but almost came undone late on when Saeid Ezatolahi’s late goal was ruled offside. VAR was the talking point after the final group games as Spain, needing to match Portugal’s result, topped the group after a dramatic night of action. Morocco stunned Spain when Khalid Boutaib stroked home the opener after a mix-up between Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos but Iniesta linked with Costa before setting up Isco for an equaliser. With Portugal winning, Spain pushed on but failed to spark in front of goal. And Morocco appeared to have claimed a famous win when Youssef En-Nesyri, who plays for Malaga in Spain, scored with a bullet header from a corner late on. But this Spanish side is packed with experience and leveled through Iago Aspas deep into time added on. The goal was ratified by VAR after initially being disallowed. The VAR system has been a success in many ways but made a shocking error to deny Portugal top-spot after a 1-1 draw against Iran. The Portuguese led at half time courtesy of a sublime Ricardo Quaresma strike. Ronaldo missed a penalty, rightly given after the referee utilised VAR that would have sealed topspot, then received a yellow card

after a lengthy review for a potential red card. Portugal it seemed would head the table but Iran levelled in injury time when the match official somehow awarded a VAR assisted penalty when all TV angles failed to illustrate handball. The results meant Spain meet Russia and Portugal take on Uruguay in the last 16, the latter clash looking a tasty affair. VAR was the talking point after Australia picked up a deserved point against Denmark in an entertaining Group C fixture. Christian Eriksen opened the scoring for the Danes before VAR spotted a handball by Yussuf Poulsen enabling Mile Jedinak to slot in a penalty equaliser, sending Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way. Tottenham’s Eriksen equalised for Denmark with an instinctive volley. Les Bleus broke the hearts of brave Peru and their 40,000 followers when Kylian Mbappe tapped home Olivier Giroud’s

deflected shot in the first half to settle a tight encounter. Peru threw everything at France after the break, Pedro Aquino going closest with a wonder strike that crashed against the crossbar. In the final group games, Denmark played out a bore-draw with France, which brought jeers at the final whistle to enable both sides to qualify. Australia had an outside chance of advancing but it evaporated when Peru notched their first goal since the 1978 finals with an Andre Carrillo low drive. Skipper Paolo Guerrero sealed the win to the delight of their fanatical supporters in the second half. On to Group D and 2014 finalists Argentina suffered a disastrous 3-0 defeat to Croatia, who enjoyed back to back wins for the first time since they came third on their debut in 1998. Their worst group stage result in 60 years stunned Lionel Messi et al. Argentine ‘keeper Willy

Caballero gifted the opening goal to Ante Rebic who scored with aplomb. Luka Modric fired home a stunning 25-yarder before Ivan Makitic tapped home in injury time. Argentina were shambolic but Croatia will be a tough nut to crack for any team. Nigeria were in pole position for second spot after a deserved 2-0 win against Iceland. Ahmed Musa volleyed home after a lightning break from an Iceland corner before sealing the win with a solo effort. Iceland won a VAR penalty late on but Gylfi Sigurdsson blazed over. The results meant Nigeria, Iceland and Argentina all had a chance of advancing in the final games. And on a night of gripping tension qualification swung to all three teams at various times. When Croatia took the lead against Iceland it looked over for the Nordic side but they leveled with a Sigurdsson penalty to be back in with a shout in Rostov-on-Don. But the Croatians sealed a third win with an Ivan Perisic injury strike. Messi produced a moment of magic to open the scoring against Nigeria with a sublime finish on 14 minutes in St Petersburg. The Argentines had a foot in the next round by half time but the Super Eagles are a young, exciting team and drew level when Victor Moses punished a Javier Mascherano gaffe to equalise from the spot early in the second half. Argentina looked doomed, and

devoid of ideas were heading out, but defender Marcos Rojo became the unlikely hero when he connected with Gabriel Mercado’s cross to steer the ball into the net four minutes from time. Messi jumped on the Manchester United defenders back in celebration amidst mass celebrations from the former champions. Argentina live to fight another day but they will have to improve when they take on Les Blues in the last 16 whilst Croatia will be favorites to advance in their clash against Denmark. Brazil labored to victory against a spirited Costa Rica until injury time goals from Phillipe Coutinho and Neymar saved them in Group E. Brazil’s talismanic player won a penalty on 78 minutes but the match official reviewed his decision after advice from VAR. Neymar’s shirt was tugged but his acrobatic fall went against him. Coutinho won the game when he poked home on 91 minutes before Neymar tapped in on the final whistle. This was a far from comfortable victory and the celebrations illustrated how big this win could prove to be. Switzerland kept up their chances with a superb 90th minute solo goal from Xherdan Shaqiri against Serbia. Serbia had taken a fifth-minute lead from an Aleksandar Mitrovic header and had opportunities to seal the win and guarantee a knock out place. But Granit Xhaka struck a superb long-range equaliser

before Shaqiri calmly slotted the winner past Vladimir Stojkovic. Switzerland and Brazil made the knockouts after last night’s matches against Costa Rica and Serbia respectively. Mexico stunned Germany in their initial Group F game and all but booked a knockout spot with a 2-1 win over South Korea at Rostov-on-Don. Carlos Vela opened the scoring from a penalty after a Jang Hyunsoo’s handball for a half time lead before Javier Hernandez doubled the lead with his 50th international goal. Son Heung-min fired in a late 25-yard howitzer to set up a tight finish. Germany kept their World Cup dreams alive with a dramatic 95th-minute strike from Toni Kroos against Sweden in Sochi, who took the lead with a brilliant lob from Ola Toivonen, but missed chances to increase the lead. Marco Reus poked home an equaliser just after the break before Kroos’ face-saving goal. Sweden eventually won the group with an impressive 3-0 win against the previously impressive Mexicans thanks to second half goals from Ludwig Augustinsson, an Andreas Granquist penalty and Edson Alvarez own goal. But the headlines were all about the fallen champions Germany’s demise in the final game at the hands of South Korea, who recorded a first World Cup win against the former winners, handing Mexico a lifeline in the process to qualify in second spot.

In Group F, Belgium produced a sparkling display as they took Tunisia apart at the Spartak Stadium. Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard both scored twice for a second successive win. Hazard slotted home a fifth-minute penalty after being upended by Syam Ben Youssef. When Dries Mertens set up Lukaku for a cool finish it looked like a walk in the park for the Belgiums but the North Africans hit back through Dylan Bronn from a Wahbi Khazri free-kick within two minutes. Lukaku made it 3-1 with a deft finish before half-time. Hazard knocked in number four and Michy Batshuayi added his name to the goal scoring list late on. Khazri hit an injury time consolation but Belgium look in ominous form. England needed a five-goal swing to join Belgium at the head of the group and they got it against Panama thanks to a John Stones brace, Jesse Lingard special from 25-yards and Kane’s treble. The skipper was in clinical form with two penalties but he also got a fortuitous deflection from Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s second half strike at goal.

BY DAN SILVER

You see, England’s opening win over Tunisia contained one serious flaw that needed correcting namely a lack of ruthlessness and clinical edge in front of goal. So Southgate’s side sparkled in Nizhny Novgorod, with pace and movement mixed with flashes of individual brilliance such as Lingard’s goal reduce Panama to an ill-disciplined shambles. But noticeably, England’s players have clearly been made aware of the potential of set-piece strength at this World Cup, particularly in the context of the video assistant referee (VAR) and the potential for physical defending to be punished, as it brought two goals from corners. Overall, the team played superbly, with the defence being as tight as they possibly could, bar the hiccup of the defensive line which led

to Panama’s consolation goal. The midfield passed the ball around with ease and I was particularly impressed with Jordan Henderson’s’ ability to release the ball at just the right time. The attack was quality with the main man Harry Kane doing what he does best, banging them right in the net. But the question that will now be asked - and one that can only be answered by performances against teams boasting more quality than Panama is how far can this young inexperience England team go. What can be said with confidence is that this has been an impressive, vibrant opening to their World Cup campaign by England, and while it is early days and the serious business will start in the knockout phase, Southgate and his squad will not have seen anything they should fear.

England possess real threat up front but may need to shore up an attack-minded midfield against better opposition, and the defence - which has looked vulnerable on occasions - has yet to be seriously tested. In my personal opinion, I believe it would be wise for Southgate to start both Kane and Marcus Rashford up top as Belgium’s defence is vulnerable when it comes to pace and dribbling, which is perfect for Rashford to exploit considering his ability to run at players at full throttle. So far, so good though - and England can get back to work at their training base on the Gulf of Finland with last-16 qualification assured before their most hazardous group game, with confidence and national expectations soaring.

When things are going for you it’s essential to take advantage and the England skipper did just that in pursuit of glory. Japan and Senegal are just in pole position for the knockouts in Group H after a 2-2 draw in Ekaterinburg. Sadio Mane opened the scoring for Senegal from close range following a goalkeeping gaffe by Eiji Kawashima but Japan equalised through Takashi Inui with a clinical finish before half-time. After Yuya Osako struck the Senegal crossbar, teenage wing back Moussa Wague fired home from an angle only for Japanese substitute Keisuke Honda earn a deserved share of the spoils. But top seeds Poland crashed out following a superb display by Columbia. Yerry Mina headed home a James Rodriguez cross for the South Americans before half-time. Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado then produced cool finishes to complete an assured display with touches of class. Columbia will qualify if they defeat Senegal in their final group game today. The last 16 knock out matches begin on Saturday and run through to Tuesday when the quarter final line up will be known.

Dan’s World Cup Column

After 52 years of hurt, pain and tragedy, football could possibly be coming home. England recorded their biggest win at a World Cup to overwhelm Panama and secure a place in the last 16 before their final Group G game with Belgium. Harry Kane played a captain’s role once more with a hat-trick to become the tournament’s leading scorer, as England built on their opening victory against Tunisia with an impressive show of ruthlessness and quality. Jesse Lingard got in on the action as well in the 36th minute with a brilliant curling effort from 25 yards and, as Panama crumbled, John Stones crowned a slick set-piece routine by heading his second goal of the game.

Dear Rabbi We are an Orthodox family and raise our children all the same. However, our oldest, soon sixteen, seems to be teetering on the brink. He’s dabbling in drugs and my husband is taking a very hard line with him but I think that is counter-productive. I think we need to show him more love. Is there a right way or wrong way in Jewish thinking? Heather Dear Heather You raise all your children the same? I’m not sure what you mean by that, but fundamental to Jewish thought is as per the verse, “raise the child according to his/her own way.” By definition, there is no one size fits all. Each child needs to be nurtured differently and while some may be more likely to follow parents’ dreams and be everything the parent wants them to be, others may be less inclined and some may be outright rebellious. Do we love them any less? No. Children need love especially when they don’t deserve it. That said, when your child is

clearly on a destructive streak, you don’t want to alienate the child and so you feel the best approach is through love and an overabundance of kindness. But we all know that in those instances you are not doing your children any favours. You think you are helping them but in actual fact, as psychology terms it, you are an enabler. You are accommodating the destructiveness – feeding it with love when sometimes tough love is necessary. Sometimes you need to be cruel to be kind! So you need to strike a balance between your two approaches. And whatever you do, your child shouldn’t see the tensions ensuing between the two of you as this will only serve to alienate him even more. Above all else, this “dabbling” in drugs reflects something more troubling and you may want to both agree on some joint therapy to get ahead of this before it gets out of hand. Dear Rabbi I am nearing my sixtieth birthday and looking back on life. I feel so much of it has been a disappoint-

King David was hiding in a cave, when remarkably his own father in law, King Saul came in to the same cave, together with three thousand armed men, all ready to kill him. Indeed, David spent much time being pursued by Saul. Hotly pursued and with his life in mortal peril, he uttered a desperate plea to be spared from destruction. When Saul fell asleep, David’s men urged him to kill his oppressor, and finally put an end to all his trouble and sorrow. David forcibly refused, and sneaked out of his hiding place. With his men watching highly in anticipation, David crept up to Saul in the black of night, and only cut off a bit of his cloak, to show him that he could have killed him but didn’t. His men were unsurprisingly astounded but Jews on the very highest level of spirituality often do things that us mere mortals can only wonder at. Whilst it was noble of King

ment. I mean, if I could go back and do it all again, then I would. I know this is very depressive but I don’t know how to shake off this feeling. Manfred Dear Manfred I don’t know anything about your life, whether you’re married, have kids, what you do for a living and your state of health to even begin to understand why you think it was all a waste of time and would want to start again. However, I can tell you this: A Holocaust survivor in Auschwitz recounted how he would sometimes watch sun rise each morning and after a while he got very angry with the sun. “How can you dare to shine over this valley of death? Chutzpah - to be so indifferent to continue to give light in a place of so much darkness. Has nature become indifferent to our fate?” He survived the war and wrote that the day after liberation he saw the sun rise and he expressed thankfulness that it would continue to represent hope and light in

Psalm 57 David not to kill him, he was ultimately punished and at the end of his life clothes no longer warmed him. That is another subject entirely, but you can see how Hashem judges the most righteous on an extremely high level. This psalm contains a wellknown verse that has become an extremely popular Jewish song. ‘Yishlach meshamyim vyosheeine, cheref shoafi selah, yishlach Elokim chasdo vaamito – He will dispatch from heaven and save me from the disgrace of the one who yearns to swallow me Selah, G-d will dispatch his mercy and his truth.’ David prays to Hashem to fulfil his promise and save him from Saul and ultimately, G-d’s mercy and truth were shown to the entire world with the demise of Saul and the remarkable rise to power of David that has lasted generations. May all our prayers be answered speedily in our days, Amen.

the face of such profound blackness. We experience negativity in our lives. That’s just fact. After that it becomes a question of the extent that impacts on our reality to a point where everything becomes so disproportionately bleak and our whole outlook becomes utterly absorbed by the experience. There is always more than one way to perceive any given situation. You can either automatically react or consciously respond: a choice point. You cannot always control what happens to you, but you can always control what happens inside of you. We are a product of our choices, not of our circumstances. And that means that a happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes. Happiness and joy are not just conditions of the mind and heart. They have direct bearing on your overall disposition and the way you function in life. We need to discover the joy of each day. We should recognise the joy of challenge, the joy of growth – the rest of life will come of itself. There are those who wake up, open their eyes and say, “Good morning, G-d!” And others who wake up, open their eyes and say, “Good G-d…morning!” Some people go through life happy that the glass is half full. Others spend a lifetime lamenting that it’s half-empty. The truth is: There is a glass with a certain volume of liquid in it. From there, it’s up to you! Dear Rabbi I have read your remarks here about intermarriage. I don’t know why you take such a harsh attitude towards those of us who found love with a non-Jewish spouse. There are plenty of sins in the Torah and those of you living in glass houses ought not to judge the rest of us. I feel your approach is outdated and that Rabbis in general ought to adjust to a 21st century approach to love and marriage. Brad Dear Brad I appreciate that you feel that way but these are the facts. When a person sins, he or she is typically not struck by lightning. The sin takes our spiritual vitality, the energy of our soul, and puts it in all the wrong places. Sin, then, is the act of taking the most valuable thing we possess, and in exchange

for what you call “love,” drags it to a place that is anathema to it. That said, normally when a person sins, they only “imprison” in this negative place the part of the soul used in that sin. There is however one sin that consumes the entire soul. This is because the entire soul is involved in the sin, not just a particular part. Human sexuality is rooted in the very deepest part of the soul, thus it lends itself to the very real ability to reproduce; It makes us G-d like; the power to bring another human being into this world. In any other sin, one drags into that negative place, only specific, external faculties of the soul and body. But the relationship between man and woman has the power to create new life. This new life derives from the entirety of its parents’ souls. Therefore when man and woman engage in a sinful forbidden relationship, they are not just sinning with a particular part of their souls but rather they drag into the sin their entire soul – the whole scope of existence. But even among such sins, when G-dly energy of the soul which is spent on evil and is thus lowered into the realm of the negative, that energy may be trapped in the chambers of impurity but it never loses its identity. As soon as the person repents properly, he frees his soul once more back to a place of holiness. But with intermarriage, any child born would be 100% not Jewish. Thus it turns out, that when a man engages in an act that may lead to non-Jewish offspring, he is taking the energy of his soul and spending it in a way that the energy risks losing its identity altogether. In such a scenario there is no redeeming feature. There’s much more to be said. I’m sorry you feel the way you do, but those are the Jewish facts.

will plot against him. Balak sends emissaries to Midian, to Bilam the son of Be’or, asking him to curse the Israelites. Bilam tells Balak’s emissaries to stay the night, to give him time to see how G-d will instruct him. G-d appears to Bilam at night and warns him not to travel to Moab to curse the Israelites, who are a blessed nation.

tells Balak to build him seven altars and give him seven bulls and rams to sacrifice. Balak complies and Bilam sacrifices the animals. G-d appears to Bilam and tells him what to say. Against his will, Bilam actually blesses the Israelites. Balak is incensed, yet Bilam claims that he is helpless.

“The she-donkey to Bilam, ‘Look, amthat I notthe you she-donkey that you ridden on all your until Balak, the king said of Moab, having seen Bilam and Balak go have to a vantage point from life where this day? Have I accustomed to do such a thing to you?’ He said, ‘No’” (Bemidbar 22:30). Israelites defeated the Emorites, is afraid that they Bilam can see the edge of the Israelite camp. Bilam

Point to Consider: What is the significance of G-d appearing to Bilam only at night? (see Rashi to 22:8)

2nd Aliya (Levi) – 22:13-20 Bilam wakes up in the morning and tells Balak’s officers that he is unable to go with them, due to God’s warning. After they report back to Balak, he sends higher-ranking officers to persuade Bilam. Bilam repeats that he is bound by God’s word. G-d again appears to Bilam at night, telling him that he has permission to go, but that he must do what G-d instructs him. 3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 22:21-38 Bilam saddles his she-donkey and travels with Balak’s officers. G-d is angered by Bilam’s decision and sends an angel to impede Bilam. The shedonkey sees the angel, who has a drawn sword in his hand. She deviates from the road to avoid the angel. Bilam, unable to see the angel, hits the shedonkey. The angel positions himself between two parallel fences. When the she-donkey moves towards the wall, pressing Bilam’s leg against it, Bilam again hits her. The angel then places himself in a narrow part of the path, making it impossible for the she-donkey to circumvent. She stops and crouches, causing Bilam to get angry and hit her again. G-d “opens the mouth of the she-donkey”, who defends her actions. G-d now “uncovers Bilam’s eyes” and he sees the angel. The angel chastises Bilam, who admits his sin and suggests returning home. The angel responds that he can continue his journey but must not say anything other than what G-d tells him. Balak goes out to greet Bilam on the border of Arnon.

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 23:13-26 Balak takes Bilam to a new location in the hope of a better result. Once again, Bilam brings animal offerings. As before, G-d appears to Bilam, who can only bless but not curse the Israelites. 6th Aliya (Shishi) – 23:27-24:13 Balak and Bilam go to a third location. After sacrificing the offerings, Bilam sees the encampments of the Israelites and “the spirit of G-d rests upon him” so that he actually no longer wants to curse them (Rashi). Again Bilam blesses Israel. Balak dismisses Bilam. 7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 24:14-25:9 Before leaving, Bilam tells Balak that the Israelites could be vulnerable to licentious behaviour (Rashi). He then prophesies about future stages of their history. Bilam and Balak go their separate ways. The Israelites settle in Shittim where the men are attracted to Moabite women, as well as towards worshipping the idol Pe’or. Pinchas, a grandson of Aharon, sees a public display of licentious behaviour and kills the culprit, Zimri from the tribe of Shimon, along with Kozbi, the Moabite adulteress. Question: Who was Pinchas’ father? (25:7) Answer on bottom of next page. Haftarah The prophet Micha describes the Messianic times that the ‘remnant of Yaakov’ will experience. He also recalls how G-d looked after the nation in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, including His thwarting of the evil plans of Balak and Bilam.

Cloud accounting to reach out to thousand. Business administration has also changed in this period, and at the heart of this change has been cloud accounting apps.

BY SHAYA GROSSKOPF

The main benefit brought about by cloud accounting is instant collaboration. A sales team can raise invoices; employees can use a telephone app to take pictures of their travel expenses and include these on expense claims for approval by managers; a credit controller can chase late payers; a business owner can consult with an accountant on the month’s figures – all working off a single, unified data set. Previous generations of software required files to be emailed or shared on USB sticks and CD drives – often the data was obsolete before it arrived, and any adjustments made by one user could not readily be integrated with another.

In the last decade, the world around us has changed immeasurably. Almost 25% of non-food retail items are now purchased online. While once we used to write cheques, we now pay for items with a touch of a smart watch, or a swipe on a smart phone. Entire libraries can now be stored on devices which fit into a pocket. The way we communicate with each other has changed, with the increasing ubiquity of social media giving individuals the ability

In addition the new generation of apps take advantage of Open Banking to automatically pull in data on bank transactions into the accounting system. This allows businesses to track which customers have paid their invoices as the cash is received, and to capture expenditure data promptly and fully. A whole “ecosystem” of specialist add on apps and systems have built up which extend upon data on accountancy apps has sprung up,

“Shaya qualified as a chartered accountant in 2011. He has worked for cloud accounting company Clear Books and as an in house accountant for city law firm Watson Farley & Williams, before joining Somers Baker Prince Kurz LLP as partner in 2018. offering, for example, payroll and HR management, timesheets, customer relationship management, inventory management and industry specific features. Many systems will store images and documents, enabling a business to become paperless. Yet, these new systems are not without their drawbacks. Businesses now keep a remarkable amount of information – some of it personal information pertaining to employees and staff on one online system on trust. Businesses need to be responsible with how they safeguard and use this data, and business users would be well advised to thoroughly interrogate these firms’ credentials before

entrusting them with it. Under the new GDPR regulations, cloud accountancy apps are likely to be “sub-processors” and there are specific requirements arising from this. The app’s financial security is also important to consider. Some of the cloud accountancy companies and add-ons, despite having glossy and beautiful websites, are relatively small and unestablished. If a cloud accounting company ceased trading, it would mean that the entire business records for all their customers would cease to be available, which could be utterly crippling. Many of these products allow you to take snapshots or back-ups of data. I strongly recommend you keep control.

Notwithstanding all this, I believe that cloud accounting will become increasingly ubiquitous over the next decade. We will start to see a lot of artificial intelligence automating support and data entry business tasks, and enabling the humans to focus on wider executive and strategic issues, but the output of these algorithms must be adequately supervised to prevent them going awry. The fundamentals of business – the need to understand the workings of all areas of your business – will not. Innovations offer fantastic opportunities for efficiency and scale, but ultimately the business is dependent on the enthusiasm and talent of the people who work there.

Parshat Balak In the previous Parshah, we read about how when other nations attacked the Jews, they were badly defeated and their lands were conquered? So in this week’s Parshah we learn that Balak, the king of Moav, has seen what’s happened to those other nations and he’s terrified. But he knows that he if he tries to fight the Jews, he will lose. So he thinks of a better plan. He will hire a prophet to curse the Jews, and then he will able to be victorious over them. So he hires Balaam, a non-Jewish prophet, to curse the Jews, and Balaam saddles his donkey and sets out on his journey. G‑d sends an angel to block his path, and Balaam’s donkey, seeing the angel, goes off the road to bypass the angel. Balaam, who doesn’t see the angel, beats the donkey for going off the road. The donkey then opens its mouth and starts speaking to Balaam, asking why he is beating her! Then Balaam sees the angel who tells him that he should know that he will not be able to curse the Jews and will only be able to say what G‑d allows him to. So Balaam arrives at his destination, and King Balak and all the dignitaries are there, waiting for Balaam to come and curse the Jews. Balaam begins to speak, and instead of cursing the Jews, he blesses them! Balak tells Balaam, “What did you do?! I hired you to curse the Jews, and instead you’re blessing them!” Balaam replied that he can only say the words that G‑d puts into his mouth. Balak takes Balaam to another mountain, hoping that a change of place will allow him to be more successful in cursing the Jews. But when Balaam opens his mouth again, he says more blessings! This time, Balak just says, “Enough! Don’t curse them and don’t bless them. Just don’t say anything!” But Balak really wants it to work , so they go to one last place. There, once again, Balaam opens his mouth and out come blessings. Finally, Balak gets really angry, saying, “I hired you to curse my enemies, and instead you blessed them three times!” Balaam answers that he can only say the words that G‑d puts in his mouth and then ends off with a prophecy about the time of Moshiach. Unfortunately, the Jews then begin to sin by serving idols and being with non-Jewish woman. A man named Zimri takes a Midianite woman to his tent, and a fierce plague starts spreading, killing many Jews. Pinchas, the grandson of Aaron, knows what he must do. He takes his spear and kills Zimri and the woman, and the plague stops.

➊ Why did Moav consult specifically with Midian regarding their strategy against the Jews? ➋ What was Balak’s status before becoming Moav’s king? ➌ What happens to a field where oxen graze? ➍ Why did Hashem grant prophecy to the evil Bilaam? ➎Why did Balak think Bilaam’s curse would work? ➊ 22:4 - Since Moshe grew up in Midian, the Moabites thought the Midianites might know wherein lay Moshe’s power. ➋ 22:4 - He was a prince of Midian. ➌ 22:4 - It shows no sign of blessing. ➍ 22:5 - So the other nations couldn’t say, “If we had had prophets, we also would have become righteous.” ➎ 22:6 - Because Bilaam’s curse had helped Sichon defeat Moav.

Answer

STORY DIGNITY Avi, fancy meeting you here. I thought that I was the only one who knew this shortcut home from school. Not at all Chaim. I have been going this way for a long time. I like walking past these new homes. Look at that one, the front door is wide open. Wow, you can see straight into the house. Hmmm. That is really interesting. It looks like they are doing some remodeling in there. Avi, should you be looking into someone’s front door? Well, they left it wide open. They must know that people will look in. I see that they have left it open. But I still do not think that we should look in. After all, looking into someone’s home is an invasion of privacy. People do things inside of their homes that they do not want others to see. I guess you’re right Chaim. But why do they build their home in such a way that you can see right into the front door from the street? That’s a good question Avi. The homes should be built to provide more privacy. Just as it was in the desert.

The desert? Who has a private home in the desert? The Jewish people’s homes were very private during their wanderings in the desert over three thousand years ago. Didn’t they live in tents? They surely did. Tents are not very private. Usually not, Avi. However, they were very careful to pitch their tents in such a way that no two openings faced each other. That is not so easy to do. How do you know that Chaim? It is in this week’s parsha Avi. Bilaam HaRasha, the wicked Bilaam wanted to curse the Jewish people. G-d would not allow him to curse us. He only let him bless us. He went to the top of a mountain and looked down on the Jewish encampment. He said, “How good are your tents, Jacob, your dwellings, Israel” (Bamidbar 24:5). Rashi comments that Bilaam saw that the openings of their tents were not facing each other. This was a true blessing, complimenting the tznius (dignity) of the Jewish

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

people. They respected each other’s privacy. They would not look into each other’s homes. I see what you mean, Chaim. Looking into someone’s house is really prying into their business. We have no right to do that. It shows a lack of self respect and respect for the other person. Exactly Avi. One of the trademarks of the Jewish people has always been our tznius. We express it in many ways. Our clothing, manner of speech, even the way we walk, all reflect our dignity. Chaim, I am so proud to be a member of this people. We have maintained our dignity through the many struggles of our three thousand years of history. I have to make my effort to carry on the tradition. I will try never to look into someone’s home again. I won’t even think of asking them a personal question. Avi, I am going to stand up the next time that you walk into the room. Why Chaim? Because I am in the company of a visiting dignitary.

Parshat Balak

In a nutshell Balak, the king of Moab, is terribly concerned about the sheer number of military victories claimed by the Jews against the Amorites. He calls upon the non-Jewish prophet, Balaam, to issue a curse upon the Jewish people. G-d instructs Balaam that the Jewish people may not be cursed for they are a people that is blessed. Initially, therefore, Balaam categorically refuses to comply with Balak’s request

as G-d has not permitted him to do so. Despite Balak’s entreaties and offers of large financial rewards via emissaries that he has sent, Balaam remains steadfast in his refusal to curse the people. Eventually though, he does accompany the dignitaries that Balaam has sent as G-d allows him to do so. G-d does not, however, issue an edict permitting him to curse the people. En route, Balaam’s donkey catches

sight of an angel blocking their path with a sword. The donkey averts death and simultaneously saves Balaam’s life by swerving from the path. G-d instructs Balaam that he will only be able to speak that which G-d permits. Indeed, Balaam thrice tries to curse the people but on each occasion, to his immense frustration, Balaam’s efforts are thwarted and only blessings seem to emanate from him. He also

prophesies on the end of time and the arrival of Mashiach. Tragically, the Jews are enticed by the allure of the daughters of Moab and they are led astray. They succumb to the temptation to worship the idol, Peor. A plague breaks out and only ends when Pinhas kills a Jewish official who publicly accompanies a Midianite princess into a tent.

SURFING GOES INLAND WITH WSL SURF RANCH’S WORLD-CLASS ARTIFICIAL WAVES Professional surfers in pursuit of the perfect wave will no longer have to depend on the whims of nature. Instead, they can head over to the farming town of Lemoore in Southern California, which is home to the world’s first wave pool dedicated to competitive surfing. Originally named after its founder, American surfing legend, 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, it was rebranded WSL Surf Ranch after the World Surfing League acquired a majority stake in 2016. In the works since 2015, the $30 million facility opened on May 5, 2018 with a two-day Founders Cup that attracted some of the world’s best surfers and over 5,000 fans. After Slater, competing for Team USA, inaugurated the weekend by flying through one of the waves, 25 professional surfers — divided into five teams representing the U.S., Australia, Europe, Brazil, and the rest of the world — took turns tackling the artificial swells. The fierce competition ended with Team World taking home the gold. For $9,500, amateur surfers also got a chance to test the man-made tides for an hour, on the Monday, following the event. The steep price included

perks like a three-night stay at the ranch, a pre-event party, an invite-only concert, and professional coaching. After the competition, Slater told WSL’s chief executive Sophie Goldschmidt, “It captured a lot of people’s imaginations in a lot of ways. Many were very cynical before the event and every single one of them, having seen the wave live, couldn’t help but smile.” Snowboarding icon Shawn White, one of the lucky amateurs to ride the waves, agreed. The three-time Olympic champion said: “Man, it was incredible, to just totally get inside of a barrel — just to have that long of a ride and realize that was just the first wave of many to come. I got pretty excited.” The possibility of an artificial surfing facility first came to Slater at the age of 14 following a visit to a recreational wave pool in Texas. “The mind was always spinning: How can you make this great artificial wave, what kind of technology would it take?” he recalls. “The idea was to make something that nobody had done before, a very highperformance wave.”

ID CARDS FOR COWS! The Indian Government is thinking of issuing Identity Cards for cows, calves, oxen and bulls. The idea behind this is to prevent illegal (wrongful) smuggling of old and retired cattle across the border into

Bangladesh. The ID tag will contain details such as the cow’s age, breed (the kind), height, body colour and horn type and each cow will have a unique ID number. The government will also maintain

a list of such ID card holding cows. It is well known that hundreds of cows are illegally taken (smuggled) each day from India to Bangladesh, where they are sold. Such cows, many of who have retired from farm work or no longer produce milk, may be finally killed for their meat. The killing of cows for meat is not permitted in many states of India and the law does not allow cows to be transported from states where their killing is banned to ones where it is allowed. Therefore, smuggling cows to another country is also not allowed. The government hopes that through the ID cards, it will be able to fix the smuggling problem.

ARCTIC OCEAN OR PLASTIC OCEAN? When you think of the icy Arctic Ocean, do you picture cold blue waters, on which float mysterious icebergs home to animals and fish not seen elsewhere on the planet? Think again, or rather add 300 billion pieces of plastic to your picture. That’s the amount of plastic scientists believe is floating around the Arctic Ocean. Most of the plastic is in the area to the east of Greenland and north of Scandinavia. Where did it come from? After all, the lands near the Arctic are not really full of people. It turns out that ocean currents are carrying plastic thrown into the ocean all the way to the Arctic. An ocean current is an unending movement of sea water from one point to another. It is caused by a several things including heat from the Sun, wind and rotation of the Earth.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Many of these plastic pieces seem to have travelled for years before reaching the Arctic. This was worked out by scientists studying the plastic problem after they observed the condition of the pieces. While much plastic floats on top of the water, a lot also may be on the sea floor. Plastic has been widely used for 60 years on Earth and our

careless dumping of plastic things is slowly turning the once pristine (perfectly clean) Arctic into a junk yard. Unlike food waste and plant waste, plastic doesn’t break down so easily-as a result, it piles up and pollutes the environment. In fact the United States Environment Protection Agency reports that “every bit of plastic ever made still exists”.

The Waves of War

PART 9

BY CHAYA SANDLER Hamish is lost in the desert somewhere, he faints. The princess decided to go looking for some revolutionaries. Meanwhile the Prince is led to his execution.

The alley was dark and foreboding. Clotheslines strung across windows, blocked all light and the clothes swayed ominously. The houses were small, cramped and seemed to be about to burst. Far behind her lay the sweet echoing laughter of little children, the loud clamouring of working men, the ceaseless chatter of labouring women. Here, in these streets, darkness and dourness reigned. This was an area of law but not of the land. The princess could taste it in the air. Some group controlled this place and she was invading it. She could feel the eyes on her back, sense the suspicion levelled at her. She stopped and waited. The flick of a pocketknife being unfolded her, the soft footfall as someone stood behind her. She turned slowly. “What businesses have you here?” “I seek help.” The ruffian smiled displaying a set of surprisingly white teeth. They reminded her of a shark’s. The ragged, patched jacket bulged with the suggestion of … contraband. “You will it find it here, lady.” The last word was pointed, mocking and a subtle threat. She pursed her lips, sprang forward and grabbed the pamphlets from under his jacket. He grabbed her arm and twisted it as

she pulled them out and they scattered across the ground. He shoved her against the wall and angrily swiped them up as a policeman’s whistle saved her life. With a scowl he seized her arm and dragged her with him. Through alleyways and side streets, deep into the underworld he hurried her until finally he pushed her past a door and trapped her next to it. “I can’t let you live any more. Fool. This is your fault.” “So you tell yourself, but why the excuse? “ He frowned at her and she forged on before he could reply. “You look too young to have spilled blood and your teeth are too white.” “Which game are you playing that you give your life so freely to the grave!?” “You speak like a noble, I know you.” “Enough!” “Oh I think you’ve had enough, I know exactly who you are. A while ago you also said enough and disappeared, now here you are, once again face to face with an old foe.” Confusion flickered in his eyes, r e p l a c e d swiftly by shock and anger as

she rested his knife against his chest. “Not bad for a princess.” He conceded. “So you do remember.” He smiled and tipped an imaginary hat at her. “Alexander. The Chancellor’s son who ran away, my, my how far you’ve come.” He grinned “I fled to join the revolution. The opulence and splendour of the nobility at the expense of the masses and their squalor was too much for me. So I left and now –“ He gestured all around him, “this is my castle.” “I remember when you came to my father for asylum.” “Not asylum, assistance. I always intended to liberate my people.” “And now?” “Now I am close to my goal, although you nearly cost me my life.” She smiled bashfully and he waved his hand dismissively. “No matter, you are the nobility I would hold most welcome. What brings you to my humble abode?” He jumped onto a table in the dim room and perched there, before settling on top of a pile of papers at the side. He moved with agility he had certainly not possessed the last time she had met him. His eyes were older and heavier than last time. Yet still, they glowed with purpose and… fervour. She turned her head to the side, “You mean to say that the revolution has no eyes and ears in the palace.” He laughed. “Well spoken. Indeed I know why you are here, but what do you seek?” She stopped, what did she want? Too much. She wanted hope, she wanted home, she wanted laughter and joy and care free days, she wanted

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

to return to a world that was no longer. She wished to return to a city that lay in ruins, a country that stood besieged and she wanted to come back and no longer be burdened with war and uncertainty. She wanted a past that was gone. What did she ask of the future? She spoke slowly.” I want to save my kingdom.” Alex regarded her with a curious expression, before he could comment, a lad rushed in and whispered something to him. His face turned grave. “Your brother… “He didn’t need to finish off the sentence. She sank to the floor sobbing. She felt him kneel beside her. “If only I could help.” “But you can, you must have men, you can storm the square, rescue him, create unrest-“ “I can smuggle you out, I cannot risk my men, my revolution, the salvation of my people to save one life. No matter who that life is.” “I will repay you, I promise. Help me now, save my brother and assure us safe passage, we will return and help you fight, we will bring down your king for you, with you.” Alexander shook his head. “Your country is besieged, how do you hope to save your kingdom, besides for mine!” “My brother has men, near here, in the desert, they lie in wait. I can promise you their help.” “How many men?” “500, will you help me?” To Be Continued…… don’t miss next week’s conclusion! TO BE CONTINUED

Gary has a degenerative condition called Ushers Syndrome which means that he is severely sight impaired and has hearing loss. He was first diagnosed at around 13 years old, and over the years his sight has deteriorated. For the past 7 years he has had a guide dog to help him get around and enables him to commute to his job at the RNIB in central London, helping to support partially sighted and blind people back into the workplace. As Simone explains, having the guide dog really changed things not only for Gary but for the whole family, “When Gary first got the guide dog it made such a difference, and gave him the ability to be independent. It also took the pressure off of me as I am much more relaxed when he goes out without me.” Simone feels that her family are a close unit that works together, and they try not to dwell on the negative, and aim to live life to the fullest. Whilst she recognises that her situation may not be ideal, she does not want others to pity her in any way. “The last thing I want is for people to feel sorry for me, because I don’t feel sorry for myself. As a family, we don’t let these things bring us down, and our house is always filled with laughter. We are a team, and we learn from each other and help each other. Gary has a much

more relaxed outlook on life, and I think that he has helped me to realise that some things are just not worth getting worked up over.” Simone feels that Gary has also helped her to focus on the positive, and it is this that she feels is important. In her working life, Simone works for Jewish Blind & Disabled as Volunteers and Activities co-ordinator for the North East London area. Jewish Blind & Disabled is the only Jewish charity dedicated to providing a life of independence, dignity and choice for any adult, from the age of 18 upwards, who is physically disabled or vision impaired. It enables this independent lifestyle via the provision of state-of-the-art mobility apartments, with 24/7 on site support from resident house managers. Without these unique facilities many of its tenants would have no choice but to live a life of dependence on others, or even be forced to move into residential care often at a relatively young age. Having grown up in the area, Simone enjoys working within the community and feels that it is close knit and very caring. Her love of community and wanting to help has led her to take part in fundraising events for various different charities, including Jewish Blind & Disabled. She plans to take part in the 20 Bridge Challenge on 14th October this year, a 20 mile charity walk which covers all the

major bridges of London from Kew to Tower Bridge. She also encourages her children to take part in fundraising. As Simone explains, “I really think that it is important to give back and to help the people around you.” Living with someone who is visually impaired can be tricky in some ways, but she tries to ensure that they have as normal life as possible, and recognise their limitations, but don’t let them be defined by them. They enjoy holidays, and days out and doing other things as a family. This may take a little more planning or arrangement, but does not stop them. She knows that Gary hates to be pitied, and she admires and respects him for being able to achieve so much, and not letting his condition get in the way, and accepts it as part of him. As she explains, “Having the condition that he has, has made him who he is, and if he didn’t have those issues, then he would not be Gary, and I would not be me! I don’t think what I do is anything special, it has become second nature now. I am just looking after my children and my husband, and doing what I can to help them all.” If you would like to nominate a ‘Woman Of Worth’ to be featured on this page then please email micaela@ thejewishweekly.com

TIPS AND TRICKS – ICE CUBE HACKS

Jewish Weekly aims to source the most genius, time saving and useful hacks for you every week, so watch this space!

In this heat, ice is handy for keeping your drinks cool, but here are some other handy hacks for this humble cube of frozenness. De wrinkle your clothes – to help remove wrinkles from your clothes, put a few ice cubes into the dryer with your clothes, and set to spin for five minutes. Wrinkle-free and ready to go!! Paint and run – need to paint your nails in a hurry. Once you have painted your nails, simply put your fingers into a bowl of iced water for about two minutes, and this will help your nails dry quickly.

Get rid of a pesky spot – Spots always come when you least expect them, and least want them, but don’t let them stress you out. Simply take an ice cube (don’t take it straight from the freezer otherwise it will stick to your face) and put it on the spot for about 30 seconds to take away the redness and inflammation so that you can leave the house with confidence!

Re-arrange the furniture – Often when you move big bits of furniture around, you notice that there are indents in the carpet. Make your carpet look like new by placing an ice cube If you have any questions or you have a top tip you want to share, please contact us on on the area and leave it to melt.
