ISRAEL “ONE STEP” FROM LOCKDOWN BY DAVID SAFFER

Israel is “one step” away from a full lockdown Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned this week as coronovirus cases escalated across the country. Health experts believe it has been sparked by the recent reopening of the economy. Netanyahu reportedly made his “only one step” comments at a hastily convened corona cabinet meeting after it was clear Israel was in the midst of a second wave of the deadly virus. “We must take immediate steps,” Netanyahu noted. Deputy Health Minister Yoav Kisch said the ‘complacent’ Israeli public would be to blame if the government imposed another lockdown. “The public was more complacent than the public in other countries, which also suffered a severe blow” he reportedly said.

Kish added that summer schools may have to be cancelled, while weddings and events should be stopped. “The second wave is already being felt,” said Dr. Moshe Sharist, director of Ichilov’s Emergency Medicine Division. “We are seeing far more confirmed patients than we did in the quiet weeks.” Health Minister Yuli Edelstein told Knesset MKs that new measures had to be instigated. “The virus is changing its behaviour and we must adjust ours accordingly,” Edelstein said. Among stringent new measures restaurants can only have 20 people outside, 19 people can attend a synagogue and a maximum of 20 people can travel on a bus with air conditioning banned. Clubs, bars and public swimming pools would also be affected. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Last week for the first time in my life, I completed a 100km bike ride to raise money for Aim Habonim School. It was an exhilarating feeling and you can read more about it on page 19. On Sunday 19th July, I am once again riding 100km, this time for Kef Kids, a London based charity dedicated to supporting children and young adults with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities and their families. KEF’s services are offered to over 100 children and young adults with special needs throughout the UK, providing friendship that helps children and young adults to thrive.

Last year, KEF provided more than 12,000 hours of respite care, enabling the parents to spend time focusing on their other family members, who are often, albeit unintentionally, marginalised by their sibling with special needs.

Religious slaughter decision due

YouTube cuts extremist channels BY ROBERT LEVY World Jewish Congress has welcomed YouTube’s decision to remove channels promoting extremist ideologies and conspiracy myths against Jews. They include White French extreme political activist Supremacists including neo-Nazi Richard Spencer, former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke and anti-Semiite Dieudonné M’Bala M’Bala. “There is still a long road ahead before hate speech is eliminated from social media,” noted WJC but the decision is an “encouraging step”. A YouTube spokesperson reportedly said there were “strict policies” prohibiting hate speech. WJC analysts search the web for hate speech and report offenders. The organisation has called on other social media platforms to follow YouTube’s lead to ensure users who perpetuate hate speech, historical revisionism and anti-Semitism are identified and banned. In related news, a memorial site honouring Jews deported to concentration camps during the Holocaust was unveiled in Würzburg Central Station last month.

The memorial by artist Matthias Braun displays empty suitcases and luggage as a symbol to over 2,000 Jews deported to death camps from the station. Only 20 returned after the war to build a new Jewish community that now numbers 1,000. The memorial is titled DenkOrt Deportationen 1941-1944. The Union of Jewish Communities in Italy is creating the first listing of Hebrew books in Italy. The catalogue of books is a ”dream come true” Dr. Gloria Arbib, former UCEI secretary general reportedly said. It includes digitised volumes and search functions in Hebrew and Latin. The project is expected to take three years but it is hoped initial results will be available in the new year. Some 35,000 Hebrew books from 14 Jewish communities and 25 state-run institutions will be catalogued. New technology will help preserve texts. I-Tal-Ya Books involves UCEI, the National Library of Israel, Rome National Central Library with support of the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe.

Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt and Shiekh Dr Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa

BY SIMCHA ABIR Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt and Shiekh Dr Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa have called for the European Court of Justice to reconsider banning religious slaughter in the Belgian regions of Flanders and Wallonia. A ‘legality’ hearing took place on Wednesday. For Jewish and Muslim communities, freedom to practise religious slaughter of animals is fundamental to the future of Europe’s minority groups. Both religious leaders view the decision as a landmark judgement. “Food plays an important role in our religious life and how we prepare food represents a key tenet of our faiths,” they noted in a joint statement. Bans on religious slaughter of animals for food has been used to limit migration from religious groups throughout history. The first ban occurred in Switzerland as a response to Jews fleeing Russian pogroms in the nineteenth century. Similar bans led up to World War Two. The religious leaders noted that Muslims have increasingly been targets of legislation including by the Far Right in the Netherlands. Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt and Shiekh Dr Al-Issa added that bans are not justified, whether targeting kosher or halal food.

Both view a ban as a violation of “core principles” that Europe must back. They noted, “While freedom of religion is inscribed as a fundamental right throughout the democracies of Europe, it is meaningless without allowing individuals and communities the freedom to practise their religions. We respect Belgian sovereignty and the right of its regions to promote social cohesion, but urge them to rethink these bans. “Targeting the religious practices of minority groups in this way can only harm relations between communities and undermine social cohesion.” Regarding the hearing, Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt and Shiekh Dr Al-Issa called on judges to account for “historical intentions” and the precedent being set. “If the Belgian bans are upheld, the message that the Court is sending to minority religious communities in Europe is clear, they are not welcome,” they said. Both fired a stark warning to the judiciary. They explained, “We cannot expect religious communities to stay in Europe and thrive as contributing members of their societies if the very act of their food consumption is to be treated as a crime. We urge the Court to take into account the needs of religious communities in its judgement and interests of building a Europe of diversity and inclusion.”

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 According to Health Ministry data at the time of going to press, Israel has seen 343 fatalities, 14,104 people are infected with 107 people in serious condition and 36 on ventilators. There was also alarm after the National Coronavirus Information and Knowledge Center Israel reported over 1,000 new coronavirus cases three consecutive days this week. Defense Minister Benny Gantz, meantime, has taken medical advice and is in isolation awaiting test results. A statement from Gantz’s office noted he will continue to manage affairs of his ministry and public duties during isolation. Gantz confirmed the situation on Twitter. “Let’s start with the bottom line, I feel great, and intend to continue working as usual, just remotely,” he wrote. “I will act exactly as directed. There is no room for risk taking.” The Defense Ministry said equipment is to be installed enabling him to fulfil his duties at home. It has been reported that a member of Gantz’s family is infected. Gantz is not the only minister in quarantine, Public Security Minister Amir Ohana entered isolation last Saturday. Netanyahu at his weekly cabinet gathering last Sunday said Israel was in a “state of emergency” due to the spike in cases. “We’re in the midst of a renewed coronavirus attack,” he noted. “We are seeing,

as I have warned before, the outbreak is accompanied by an increase in the number of serious cases, which will challenge the Health Ministry.” Netanyahu added that the government would announce a financial rescue plan for businesses owners. “This is the most important mission for me and the government,” he said. Tensions have risen in the cabinet with heated debate on the economy and health of citizens. In a bid to defeat Covid-19, the Knesset passed new legislation on Tuesday.

The unity government can declare a state of emergency and change restrictions then gain Knesset approval if it believes the virus will pose serious harm to public health with no action. The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee started debating the legislation on Monday. Shin Bet GPS tracking system, meantime, has reportedly incorrectly informed people to enter self-isolation. A number have threatened legal action over lost income. A Facebook group “Shin Bet tracking

victims” has been set up on behalf of citizens affected. Among ‘hot spot’ areas in Israel is the West Bank ultra-Orthodox settlement of Beitar Illit, who have started a week-long lockdown. Other affected communities are in Kiryat Malachi, Bnei Brak, Modi’in Illit, Ra’anana, Kuseife, Kafr Qara, Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh and Tel Aviv. There are 1 ,871 active cases in Jerusalem, 1,217 in Tel Aviv and 1,037 in Bnei Brak. In a challenging week for communities, there was outrage after at least 39 students in Ra’anana tested positive after ignoring social distancing and mask-wearing regulations at a high school graduation party at a nature location banned by the Education Ministry. There was also criticism in various quarters after 200 students at Beith Matityahu yeshiva in Bnei Brak were infected following a student becoming ill after attending a wedding. In related news, Prof. Siegal Sadetzki, Health Ministry head of public health services has resigned. Sadetzki criticised the government’s response since the first wave in a letter to the ministry’s new director-general, Prof. Hezi Levi, Sadetzki. Health Minister Yuli Edelstein told reporters he was unaware of a letter. Sadetzki blamed the “quick reopening of the economy” compared to Western nations. She also noted the government had moved away from its initial professional and ethical leadership.

Iranian nuclear site suffers Israel still awaits Trump ‘green light’ on annexation “significant” damage BY SIMCHA ABIR An Iranian underground nuclear site has suffered “significant” damage in a recent explosion. Iran had rebuffed the fire incident in Natanz as cyber sabotage, but has now acknowledged the strike. Israel was responsible for the attack according to some media reports, however, Defence Minister Benny Gantz denied the assertion. “Everyone can suspect us in everything and all the time, but I don’t think that’s correct,” he told Israel Radio. “Not every incident that transpires in Iran necessarily has something to do with us. “All those systems are complex, they have very high safety constraints and I’m not sure they always know how to maintain them.” No casualties were reported but precision equipment was hit and could delay production of centrifuge machines. Bicom noted online, “According to Iran’s atomic agency spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi, a month after the US withdrew from the nuclear agreement in 2018, Iran began work on advanced centrifuges in Natanz following an order from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran is using high-speed centrifuges to enrich uranium. Highly enriched uranium can be fuel for an atomic bomb. “In June, the International Atomic Energy Agency accused Iran of continuing to

increase its stockpiles of enriched uranium, in violation of the nuclear deal.” Bicom added there had been explosions in Iran in the past 10 days including at a power plant in Ahvaz and east of Tehran near the Parchin military base. Bicom is concerned Iran may try and retaliate against Israel possibly by Syria, the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps or proxy militias. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for further sanctions to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons. Speaking at a meeting with US Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, Netanyahu noted Iran had misled the international community. “The international community largely stood idle in the face of Iranian deceit and aggression”, he explained. Netanyahu praised the US for “maximum pressure” policies towards Iran. Hook, in Israel on a Middle East diplomatic tour last week, said Israel and the US saw “eye to eye”. “Iran is the “largest sponsor of anti-Semitism and terrorism” in Middle East and across the globe,” he noted. Only last month, Israel’s cyber head acknowledged Israel had stopped a cyber attack affecting water systems. The UN backed arms embargo on Iran expires in October. Israel’s standard policy is not to officially comment on Iranian strikes. It’s long-term strategy is to prevent Iran building a nuclear weapon.

Donald Trump

BY ADAM MOSES Israel is still waiting for the ‘green light’ from US President Donald Trump’s administration over plans to annex areas of the West Bank and Jordan Valley. Discussions continue but annexation talk has gone quiet in recent days with both nations battling the coronavirus pandemic. Arab nations have threatened regional instability. This week Egypt, France, Germany and Jordan warned Israel against annexing as it would hit bilateral relations after a video conference. In a joint statement from the German Foreign Ministry, foreign ministers discussed how to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The PA wants the West Bank for a future Palestinian state but oppose annexation. “We concur that any annexation of Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 would be a violation of international law and imperil the foundations of the peace process,” the statement noted. “We would not recognise any changes to the 1967 borders that are not agreed by both parties in the conflict,” they added. “It could also have consequences for the relationship with Israel.” Israel have not commented on the statement but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed earlier this week that Netanyahu and Prime Minister Boris Johnson had spoken after Johnson’s recent comments regarding annexation. “I profoundly hope that annexation does not go ahead,” Johnson recently said. “If it does, the UK will not recognise any changes to the 1967 lines, except those agreed between both parties.”

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA

Johnson called for all parties to re-engage and “hammer out a solution” requiring compromise on all sides. The United Nations, European Union and a number of Arab countries have stated sovereignty would violate international law. The road ahead is unclear regarding Netanyahu’s hopes as high level negotiations continue. But Israel’s leader has vowed to find a way forward. Israel’s major party leaders have reportedly disagreed over the timing of an announcement over annexation. Knesset divisions reportedly persist. Former Justice Minister and far-right Yamina leader Ayelet Shaked has accused Netanyahu of backing down to pressure from Gantz and Arab members while Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman has criticised Israel’s leader for stalling an announcement. Settlers have various views, some not accepting “any plan” that divides the land of Israel while others are behind it. Similar viewpoints exist throughout Israel. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, meantime, has described annexation as “disastrous”. Israeli media over recent weeks have reported that Netanyahu could well scale back plans in a symbolic move. Tension has risen in the region, global pressure persists and there was a renewal of rockets attacks over the weekend by Palestinian militants in Gaza. The Iron Dome missile defense intercepted one missile, two landed earlier in open fields. No damage or injuries were reported. IDF strikes hit underground infrastructure.

Calls for Starmer to sack Reed after anti-Semitic trope BY ADAM MOSES Conservative MPs have called on Labour Leader Keir Starmer to sack Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary Steve Reed for posting a classic anti-Semitic trope about a Jewish businessman. Reed “apologised unreservedly” following growing criticism for offensive language suggesting a Conservative donor Richard Desmond was “the puppet master to the entire Tory cabinet”. The anti-Semitic tweet related to Labour’s viewpoint involving Desmond and Housing Minister Robert Jenrick in a planning debate. Reed tweeted, “Is billionaire former porn-baron Desmond the puppet master for the entire Tory cabinet?”. Reed subsequently accepted his post was “inappropriate” and deleted it when he realised his error. “I want to apologise unreservedly for the language in the tweet I posted on Saturday. It was inappropriate and as soon as I realised my error I deleted it,” Reed noted. Andrew Percy MP, Conservative co-chair of All-Party Parliamentary Group on Anti-Semitism however has called on Starmer to sack Reed if he is “serious” about tackling antisemitism. “Alluding to Jews as

puppet-masters is an age old anti-Semitic trope and for a Shadow Cabinet member to use this trope is totally unacceptable,” he reportedly noted. Should Starmer not dismiss Reed, Percy added, British people would conclude his action against Long-Bailey was “out of political convenience rather than principle”. Nicola Richards, Conservative MP for West Bromwich East, was “shocked and appalled” by Reed’s comment. “It is completely acceptable for a member of your Shadow Cabinet to use such deeply hurtful language,” she reportedly noted in a letter to Starmer. Richards added, “When you became leader of the Labour Party you said you would rid Labour of anti-Semites.” Starmer when asked about the issue on LBC radio on Monday said he not seen the tweet but would look into it. Not long after, Reed issued his statement. A Labour spokesperson said, “Steve deleted the tweet and did not mean to cause any offence.” It is understood no further action will be taken. Campaign Against Antisemitism view a notion of Jews being all-powerful puppet-masters is a classic anti-Semitic trope. In related news, Waterstones is to

reportedly remove from sale books by David Icke after one of his controversial books was on sale at a branch in Southport. CAA for a number of years have warned of Icke using social media, his books and stage performances to incite hatred towards Jewish people. Meantime, anti-Semite Gilad Atzmon has condemned Google for deleting a Youtube channel of convicted French anti-Semite Dieudonné M’bala M’bala. M’bala M’bala has been convicted for hate speech and backing terrorism in France and Belgium. Aztmon tweeted, “This morning we learn that Black Voices do not matter at all.” CAA noted Atzmon reportedly blamed the Grenfell Tower tragedy on “Jerusalemites” and informed university students that “Jews were expelled from Germany for misbehaving.” “He is not shy about his anti-Semitism,” added CAA who have won a defamation court case against Atzmon. Brexit leader Nigel Farage, meanwhile, has been criticised for use of conspiratorial language. CAA noted, “While these tropes are not necessarily anti-Semitic in isolation, Mr Farage’s repeated use, which are very

popular in far-right circles, has led to wide condemnation.” Percy reportedly said, “These conspiracy theories have real world and dangerous consequences and are without question anti-Semitic.” He added, “Farage needs to cut it out before he causes further harm by providing further fuel to racist anti-Semitic tropes and conspiracy theories.” Catherine McKinnell, Percy’s Labour coChair, added: “His choice of language, which echoes some of that circulating amongst the far-right online, is worrying and getting worse.”

Israel has launched a new spy satellite. Reconnaissance satellite Ofek 16 has advanced capabilities and is transmitting data. Ministry engineers and Israel Aerospace Industries are conducting tests before operational activities. Defence Minister Benny Gantz told reporters intelligence is crucial for Israel’s security. Litzman will quit if rabbinate ordain women BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel’s Minister of Housing and Construction Yaakov Litzman has warned the new unity government that he will quit his post if the rabbinate allow women to take rabbinical exams. The head of Agudat Yisroel offered his ultimatum following a meeting with Religious Affairs Minister Yaakov Avitan, Higher Education and Minister of Water Resources Zeev Elkin and Sephardi Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef on Tuesday. The quartet discussed ways of halting the High Court of Justice allowing women to take rabbinical exams for accredited certification. Orthodox communities in Israel are outraged by the prospect. Inclusivity is a major debate in Israel and Litzman told ministers during Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet meeting on Sunday that he would relinquish his post if the rabbinate was compelled to ordain women to the rabbinate or dayanut. “We will not allow some to receive smicha from the rabbinate,” Rabbi Yosef reportedly confirmed during the meeting. “If we have to, we will cancel all testing for the rabbinate if the High Court forces us to test women. If they force us to test and give smicha to women, I will instruct

Yaakov Litzman

all echelons within the rabbinate to refute this in any way they can and I will demand that all testing and programs to prepare for the rabbinate be stopped.” Avitan added, “Halacha as well as Jewish tradition, which the rabbanite has sworn to uphold, prevent the giving of smicha to women. If women would like to take tests in the study of Talmud they can do so under the framework of the Ministry for Higher Education. “Such tests already exist in numerous universities around the country.” Plans are now afoot to ensure details in this matter are concise. A detailed proposal will be put in place to counter any decision by the High Court.

O’Toole calls for Israeli embassy move BY ROBERT LEVY

Erin O’Toole

Canadian politician Erin O’Toole will move his country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem if elected Prime Minister. O’Toole has criticised Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for “weakened and wavered” support of Israel. Aside from moving the embassy, following on from its neighbour United States, O’Toole backs a two-state solution. “Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people, and the modern presence there just cements this,” he reportedly noted on Facebook. “The Knesset, the Supreme Court and Foreign Ministry are all in west Jerusalem. “We support a two-state solution, but that does not prevent us from doing more

with our friend and ally, Israel. As Prime Minister, I will follow through on our policy and move our embassy.” O’Toole added, “We need more presence on the ground there, and I want us to explore more exchanges and collaborations with Israel to partner, much like we do with our other closest allies.” O’Toole also praised former Prime Minister Stephen Harper for making Canada a “trustworthy friend” to Israel. A member of the Canadian House of Commons since 2012, O’Toole is a longtime friend of Israel. Earlier this year, O’Toole called for the move as he recognised the “reality that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital”.

taking out life cover if any of the following apply to you:

Sadly, all of us are likely to know someone who has died from catching the virus. More than any other event over the past century it has brought home our mortality. All of us have taken extra lifestyle precautions to mitigate our chances of catching the virus. Yet how many of us have done something to mitigate the financial impact the virus could have on our families? Heaven forbid, were you to die prematurely from the virus or any other illness how would this impact your family? Most people aren’t thinking about life insurance in their 20s, but it’s often the best time to buy it. There are several factors that determine the cost of life insurance, but generally, the younger and healthier you are when you buy a policy, the cheaper it will be. An average 20 or 30-something non-smoker can expect to pay from just £8 a month for a term life policy depending on the coverage amount. You probably spend more on coffee every week! Indeed business owners or employees have particularly tax efficient ways to take out life cover in that some plans can be expensed through the business saving the company corporation tax without the individuals covered having these benefits being treated as a benefit in kind for personal income tax. Besides the current heightened risk of death from catching the virus, you ought to consider

1. YOU’RE HAVING A BABY If you’re planning to have a baby in the next year or so, now is a great time to buy life insurance. For one thing, most people’s health declines with age. The longer you wait to buy a policy, the greater the eventual cost. Secondly, if you’re going from two incomes to one there’s even greater reason to set up a financial safety net before having kids. 2. YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED If your soon-to-be spouse relies on your income to live the lifestyle you share, it’s a good idea to get life insurance. Whether they bring in their own earnings or not, having a life insurance policy in place assures they can maintain a similar standard of living if you die prematurely. 3. YOU FINANCIALLY SUPPORT AGING PARENTS The general rule is that if someone else relies on your income to live, then you probably need life insurance. Most people think of protecting a spouse or children, but millions of people are acting as caregivers for a parent, in-law, or grandparent. If you help out your aging parents, or plan to one day, a life insurance policy ensures they’re left with some money for long-term care or personal expenses if you can no longer provide for them.

4. YOU HAVE DEBT When deciding on a coverage amount for a life insurance policy, its recommended to include your total debt amounts to ensure whoever receives the money in the event of your death will have enough to pay off your outstanding balances in full. 5. YOU’RE SELF-EMPLOYED OR HAVE TAKEN OUT BUSINESS FINANCE Life insurance can be incredibly beneficial if you’re a small business owner. If you set up a “Key Person” life insurance policy, your employees or key stakeholders will still get paid in your absence. You can also use a life insurance policy as collateral to secure a small business loan with any remaining amount being paid to your beneficiaries. 6. YOU HAVE A HIGH-RISK JOB OR EXTREME HOBBIES If you work in a dangerous or high-risk environment or you’re a thrill seeker with a penchant for extreme sports you’ll be deemed higher-risk by a life insurance company. Life insurance comes in various forms. Often when I review people’s existing cover, its frequently not fit for purpose or its been set up incorrectly. To avoid such pitfalls, seek out expert advice from a competent adviser to ensure your family are appropriately protected.

No two-state “illusion” in Middle East says Regev BY DAVID SAFFER

Mark Regev, former Israeli Ambassador to the UK

Middle East peace will not encompass a two-state “illusion”. Former UK Ambassador Mark Regev’s stark message came during an in-depth podcast with BBC correspondent Nick Robinson on Radio 4’s Political Thinking Show. Regev is completing a quarantine period on his return to Israel following a successful UK posting. Taking time out to discuss all things Israel-related, on the subject of peace, he could not have been clearer to listeners. “Peace has to be based on reality,” he explained. “You can have a twostate ‘illusion’, it might look nice on a piece of paper but it will be never implemented.” He added, “First and foremost, you have to build peace on security, because we know that peace that can’t be defended won’t endure, it won’t survive.” Referring to political realities in Gaza, the West Bank, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lybia, Regev warned those espousing a baseless two-state solution, “If a future Palestinian state is just another failed middle eastern state how is that good for peace, Israel or more importantly, how is that good for the Palestinians. When people say a Palestinian state is the solution, it’s important to put

in a number of qualifications. Is it a Palestinian state that is peaceful, democratic, wants to live with Israel side by side, or just a superior platform to continue the struggle against Israel.” Regev was Netanyahu’s international spokesman for eight years and was calmness personified during an in-depth grilling with Robinson. Regarding his next post, Regev will remain in government service but another rumoured key role was not forthcoming. “Nothing is finalised until it is finalised, so far there has been no official announcement,” he said. Regev, born in Melbourne, recalled numerous aspects of his life, starting with Aliyah. “Israel is a country of immigrants,” he said. “My story is not atypical. I was living the good life, but in Israel, people were fighting and dying to protect the country (during the Yom Kippur war). I thought that was unfair, I should be doing my part as well.” Regev’s parents are Holocaust survivors, Robinson wanted to know if he owed them a debt to ensure the Shoah never happened again. He recalled, “People of my fathers’ generation didn’t talk about what they went through. They built a huge wall between then and today. My father was an infant child, then young teen before being liberated. We as children never asked. When

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

we became adults, we probed a bit but my father was never eager to talk about it. He was lucky to survive and always said he owed his life to the Royal Air Force.” Regev met his wife, Vered, on a kibbutz after making Aliyah in 1982. Robinson wanted to know if his political ideals had changed over a seven-year period of kibbutz life. “Whatever anyone says about a kibbutz it is probably the most successful experiment in real democratic socialism on the planet,” he explained. “When we made the decision to leave the kibbutz, I moved to Tel Aviv and started a doctorate. I was a total failure as an academic.” Regev’s move into the Israel foreign service after serving in the Nahal Brigade of the IDF, came fortuitously when his wife spotted an ad in a newspaper. Following an exam, a new journey began. “I don’t know why but they accepted me, but the truth is if I’d been a more successful academic I’d never have become a diplomat,” he recalled. Robinson asked Regev why he had dropped his surname Freiberg. “My father never said anything to me, I only found out that I hurt him after be passed away,” he lamented. “What I did was not atypical. A lot of Jewish people when they came to Israel adopted Hebrew names. It was part of me connecting to

9 JULY 2020 Israel. Also, Freiberg is a German name and I always associated it with the people who tried to kill us.” Continuing the Holocaust theme, was Regev, like a number of his generation, motivated by anger that their parents did not do enough to stop the Shoah happening? “I was never angry at my father or the way they acted, they were victims of a terrible hatred and regime,” he said. “When I was in the Israeli Army, my father was very proud there was a younger generation of Jews who could defend themselves if need be, because he was from a generation of Jews who were stateless but defenceless. “There were stories of Jewish leaders going to Churchill and Roosevelt begging them to drop bombs on the camps to stop the extermination. That for all sorts of reasons did not happen. The fact that the Jews can now be sovereign, independent and defend themselves, that for my fathers’ generation was a very significant and important change.” Robinson never avoids tough questions. Regev, likewise, was not worried about being controversial when asked if he understood an “aggression in the Israeli state” that can make people nervous. He noted, “At Holocaust remembrance commemorations, people empathise with Jews who were the victims, but what if the Jewish people decide they don’t want to be victims anymore, what if the Jewish people decide they don’t want to be on the receiving end of persecution and violence. They want to be able to defend themselves, they want to be sovereign, free, independent. “I am proud that we are no longer history’s victims, we are no longer stateless and defenceless.” Probing his politics, Regev told Robinson about early political discussions with Israeli Arabs and Palestinians at university in Jerusalem then serious conversations as a professional. During his recent London-stint, conversations with Palestinian intellectuals and business people were among his “most rewarding” periods. Moving on to his Foreign Ministry years as a spokesman, after rising through the ranks of Israel’s diplomatic corps, Robinson wanted to know how Regev excelled on the international stage. “Whatever you do professionally, it’s best to prepare,” he said, though it was “trial and error”. “I didn’t read a book on how to be a good or successful spokesperson,” Regev added. “Over the years, mistakes I made earlier in my career, I was less likely to repeat. You learn as you go on.” How, Robinson wondered, did Regev appear not to lose his temper when people clashed with him on TV or radio? Was it a conscious decision? “As a diplomat, I take pride in my professionalism and don’t take it personally,” he explained. “If a person asking me questions was being tough, and sometimes abusive, I would remember they are doing their job. It’s my job to give the best answers. If I respect their professionalism and they respect my professionalism, that’s fine.” Regev is proud to represent a

NEWS 11

TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488 democratically elected government in a part of the world where Israel stands alone. “I firmly and sincerely believe in the essential justice of Israel’s thoughts,” he explained. “The idea that the Jewish people deserve national self-determination in their homeland, the Jewish state is entitled to security and defensible borders to protect ourselves. “If as the Israeli government spokesperson or Ambassador of the United Kingdom, I can make British or international audiences more aware of Israeli thinking, then I am doing my job.” Quizzed on his stance regarding West Bank annexation, Regev explained that every Israeli government since the Six Day War had a policy of not returning to 1967 borders. “We are entitled to defensible frontiers,” he noted. “The lines of pre ‘67 weren’t the lines of peace, they were not recognised international borders, they were ceasefire lines and did not give Israel peace or security. In fact, they were so precarious they were an invitation to aggression at Israel’s narrowest point, the country was barely nine miles wide.” Pointing out that Israel’s unity government calls for international recognition for defensible borders, Regev added that Israel did not want to hurt peace prospects nor reconciliation with its neighbours. We want to find a “solid, rational, realistic foundation” for reconciliation that must come, he said. Regarding comments by the United Nations warning of an apartheid system, Regev was defiant. “You are giving too much credit to the UN Human Rights Council and its mechanism and people it appoints,” he explained. “This council has spent more time attacking the only democracy in the Middle East than it has the autocracies of the Middle East. They have spent more resolutions on democratic Israel, the only country whose body politics actually enshrines human rights than the regime in Iran, Assad’s regime in Syria, or terrible regimes in Lybia and other parts of the region. “There is institutional bias there and it does not do western media any service to western publics when you automatically quote these groups.” Asked about Palestinian checkpoints that Israelis don’t have to adhere to, Regev was crisp in a response. “You can presume they are there because Israelis are terrible people who just want to oppress their neighbours, or you can say, maybe there is a reason Israelis put checkpoints up,” he explained. “If the checkpoints weren’t there, would not terrorists be coming into Israel trying to murder our people? Is that not what happened before there were checkpoints?” Regev added that Israel in defending its people had taken numerous steps. Maybe some steps were not “effective or measured enough” but to argue Israel does not have the right to protect its people is to “ignore reality”. Regev continued, “Israel has been calling, and still calls today, for negotiations with the Palestinians. It’s not Israel that has refused to negotiate with the

Palestinians, it’s the Palestinians that have consistently refused to engage with Israel. They prefer to go to the United Nations and European Union to try get resolutions condemning Israel but they don’t negotiate face to face with us.” Looking back on his London tenure, Regev was shocked anti-Semitism was on the rise in the UK. Israel’s emissary had to field tricky questioning by Robinson. Was there a difference between passionate opposition to what the State of Israel does and anti-Semitism? Was it possible to reject IDF and Israeli government policies without being accused of being anti-Semitic? “If you have a policy difference with Israel, with the Israeli government, that is legitimate criticism, that is nothing to do with anti-Semitism,” Regev calmly explained. “We have 120 members of our Knesset, they have vibrant debates about policies and it’s nothing to do with anti-Semitism. Where it becomes anti-Semitism is where you get demonisation of Israel, when Israel becomes the epicentre of evil on the planet. Something bad happens so it has to be Israel behind it.” He added, “There is no doubt that a militant, anti-Israel strident position is often, if not always, intertwined with traditional anti-Semitism.” Regev would not comment on former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn nor former shadow cabinet minister Rebecca Long-Bailey who insisted she was not anti-Semitic after sharing a post suggesting police tactics could have been learnt from training sessions by Israeli police. However, in terms of individuals not seeing an anti-Israel conspiracy theory as anti-Semitism in general, he noted, “Is there something about anti-Semitism that in some circles people don’t see even though it is clearly there.” As for UK’s new Ambassador, Tzipi Hotovely, a number of UK Jews have objected to her appointment over her political viewpoints. Ever the diplomat, Regev apologised as the UK has never had a female emissary. “Every ambassador is different. She has broken a glass barrier and that is a good thing,” he noted. “When she becomes Israeli ambassador, she will cease being a politician and will become a civil servant. She will become part of Israel’s diplomatic corp.” Regev added, “In the past, we have had political appointees who have been very successful ambassadors. Mr Netanyahu started his political life at the Israeli Embassy of Washington then UN as a political appointee. Because someone is not a

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

trained diplomat does not mean they will not succeed in their job. Often the skills you can use to succeed in politics are very effective in diplomacy as well.” Returning to the Middle East, Robinson asked if Regev envisages peace in his lifetime. “I’m very optimistic about peace and about Israel,” he enthused. “It’s not a naive optimism, it’s based on reality. I see two mega-trends in Israel which give me every reason to be hopeful for the future. “Today, Israel is talking to more Arab governments than ever before in the history of the Jewish state. We are speaking to Arab nations in north Africa and the Gulf. More than half the members of the Arab league today have different levels of relations with Israel. And for Israelis it’s very exciting. We have friends and allies in the region. It’s an ongoing process and is constantly getting stronger.” Regev did not rule out a regional relationship triggering negotiations with the Palestinians. “These are countries that were hostile to Israel, saw themselves as enemies of Israel, some actually sent forces to fight Israel, yet today we are having much more positive relations with them,” he explained. “It’s a real revolution and it has to help us with the Palestinians. As Israel is increasingly accepted as a legitimate part of the region, as an ally, as a friend, this has to help us affect the Palestinian track as well in a positive way.” Threats in the region were uniting Israel with former adversaries. “It’s not just Iraq, it’s also Iran, all the countries of the region feel threatened,” Regev explained. “It’s a fear of militant, radical Islamism. It doesn’t matter if its Isis, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah or the regime in Iran. We are allied against this. It has brought us together and once we are talking because of common threats we are discovering there are many other common interests.” Regarding his second ‘mega-trend’, Regev pointed to Israel’s economy. “According to the World Bank, Israel for the first time passed the UK in GDP per capita,” he noted. “We are a smaller country with a smaller economy, but Israel per capita is up there with the UK. “Israel has become an epicentre for innovation, technology, science, creativity.” Concluding, Regev said with the right politics and economics there was a sound foundation for the future of Israel. Summing up, Robinson said if Netanyahu proceeded with his annexation plans he will need Regev by his side to publicly make his and Israel’s case.

“Israel has been calling, and still calls today, for negotiations with the Palestinians. It’s not Israel that has refused to negotiate with the Palestinians, it’s the Palestinians that have consistently refused to engage with Israel.”

Dear Editor, Your correspondent Adam Cohen must have taken leave of his senses when he wrote to criticise the Chief Rabbi for instructing communities to remain closed until they could legally open for communal prayer. It should be quite clear that one does not need a shul to be open to engage in private learning, particularly in the age of the internet. In fact, although I do not daven at a Shul under his authority, I think the Chief Rabbi has shown remarkable leadership during this crisis. I think many of our Rabbonim could and should learn a

RE: OPEN OUR SHULS! Dear Editor, I feel that there needs to be an honest response to last week’s letter from Brian Gordon (18 June) regarding open our Shuls. We know for a fact that opening our schools up fully has not worked and there are reasons for this. We all want to see our schools and shuls reopen as soon as possible but let us think for a minute what we are asking for. Brian Gordon does not mention as soon as we reopen our shuls whether we are 1 or 2 metres away from our nearest neighbour that we won’t even be able to comment on a Rashi or Tosfos to them. With our masks on, we won’t be able to correct possible errors from the leining even if the wrong tense has been put in. We will not be able to communally join in with the singing of any prayers. He has also not mentioned if he wishes to requisition space behind the mechitzah or ladies gallery for the number of men who wish to attend but who will not fit into many synagogues.

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FOR JACQUELINE CURZON Dear Editor, Following Jacqueline Curzon’s recent article, I couldn’t help agreeing with her point about inflated prices of PPE items. During the height of the virus it is true that prices for masks, sanitizers and such like were heavily inflated. There simply wasn’t enough stock in the country, due to the speed at which we were swept along by the pandemic. Demand was insane and so prices spiralled from distributor to retailer. Now nearly 3 months later, there is absolutely no reason why prices should be inflated at all. Being a wholesaler and retailer myself, I can confirm that there is plenty of stock and even a saturation of these items. Suppliers are stuck with too much of it, simply because the panic and urgency for these items is no longer there. There is no reason whatsoever why prices can not return to those pre Coronavirus. The Front Line is a great column, Ms Curzon always has her finger on the pulse. Mr A Silber London

RE: ISRAEL AND THE PALESTINIANS GOING FORWARD I agree with the letter of the 42 and others who disagree with this summer’s moves to annex anything. The Netanyahu government has just “stroked cats the wrong way,” stirring up another bout of anti-Israel campaigning which we all know spills into Antisemitism too easily. As the law stands Israel is sovereign de facto in The Territories by virtue of its 1967 victory which is why enemies two facedly and inconsistently can accuse her of discrimination for not treating both populations the same while demanding the PA areas be treated as a separate state. The annexation squabble is about de jure ie pre-emption any peace treaty - which the Arabs refuse under their Khartoum Noes policy; so the entire exercise has a been pointless provocation. The Arabs have never accepted the, “international community’s,” two state solution. Not in 1947, nor 1967, nor since, and M. Abbas has also bawled to camera that he is not abandoning (?) the Arabs in Israel - so he wants Galilee and Jerusalem too. Gaza has proven that one sided actions by Israel do not engage the Arab parties in peace nor anything that is not

in the Arab one-state, “From the River to the Sea.” Effectively the Arabs and the oil lobby have put the argument about Israel back to 1947 and whether Israel should exist at all. The aggravation of the annexation proposal can be - and is - painted as closing the possibility of any Palestine state however small (the mirror image of PA/PLO intentions) so giving power to Arab accusations. Mr Milaric’s (2 July) programme of Israeli conditions for talks or peace is a good one but it means that instead of talking annexations, the Israeli policy machinery should be re-unified to explain there is no point in doing anything on the ground nor going to talks till the Arabs stop their war “by other means” and warlike intentions and prove it by changing their school curricula and maps and having their supporters call for a partition - a two state - peace. The situation would then at least revert politically to the 1949 - 67 situation when interviewers could embarrass Arabs for their refusal to negotiate. Frank Adam Prestwich,

Tuffkid becomes first nursery in Barnet to win Mayors award The Kisharon nursery - Tuffkid has become the first nursery in Barnet to win a coveted Healthy Early Years London (HEYL) silver award with a project to improve pupils’ teeth. Healthy Early Years London (HEYL) is an awards scheme funded by the Mayor of London which supports and recognises achievements in child health, wellbeing and development in early years settings. During a 12-month period Tuffkid had to identify an area of health they could improve on. They chose an oral health project. In the nursery dentists gave talks to the children and the nursery ran parents’ workshops, shared tips in its weekly newsletter, gave extra training to staff and demystified trips to the dentist for the children with activities like swapping a paintbrush for a toothbrush in painting sessions. Surveys before and after the project showed children had drastically reduced the consumption of fizzy and sugary drinks, with 53% of children having them more than once a week at the start, compared to 28% afterwards. Children were far less anxious about visiting the dentist too

with 50% showing anxiety before the project being reduced to 24%. Nursery Head Janice Marriott comments:

CONSIDERING ALIYAH?

“I am delighted we have managed to make improvements in oral health. The team has worked very hard and parents were very

co-operative, and we even helped some register with a dentist.” Given one in four children under the age of five in Barnet has a filling, Janice said, “tackling dental health was a clear choice to focus on improving for the award entry”. Sadiq Khan personally congratulated the nursery via written correspondence including, “I would like to congratulate you on demonstrating the impact of your work to improve the health, wellbeing and development of your children, parents, carers and staff. I wish you every success in maintaining your Healthy Early Years London Silver Award and a healthy, happy and productive environment.” Tuffkid will now aim for the Gold award to build on their magnificent work which can only be applied for one year after being awarded the Silver. Tania Barney, Coordinator for Barnet Healthy Schools and Healthy Early Years Programmes commented “ It has been a pleasure working with Janice and her team and I am delighted to share that they are first setting (outside the Children’s Centres, who were converting an existing award) to achieve the HEYL Silver, so an extra well done!”.

Chai serves up ‘Food For Thought’

Chai’s ‘Food For Thought’ webinar

Councillor Rabbi Arnold Saunders and Son Yoni outside the Shteibel on Broom Lane

Councillor Rabbi Arnold Saunders is claiming that he organised the first act of communal worship, anywhere in England, of any religious denomination, following relaxing of the lockdown regulations. The new regulations came in to force at midnight on Shabbat morning, 4th July-permitting Houses of Worship to reopen for public prayer at midnight- along with hair salons, restaurants and other businesses. (Pubs had to wait till 6 am!) Shabbat - 12th Tammuz-happened to be the Yahrzeit for Councillor Saunders’ late mother, Esther-and of course he wished to recite Kaddish throughout Shabbat- including at the Kabbalat Shabbat (Evening)

Service on Friday evening recited after Shabbat commences. As it only became legal to hold services from midnight, he arranged for his local Synagogue in Kersal – which Councillor Saunders represents on Salford City Council – Zichron Yechezkel, to open for evening prayers at midnight. The service commenced at 12:01am (which even at this time of the year is still dark and evening prayers may still be recited. The participants, who of course observed the social distance regulations and government guidelines -included his two sons, Yossi and Yoni, son-in-law and fellow Ward Councillor Ari Leitner.

At the end of June, over 800 households tuned in to Chai Cancer Care’s webinar ‘Food For Thought - As We Transition Out Of Lockdown’ with registered nutritionist Jenna Hope Msc Bsc (Hons) in conversation with celebrity interviewer and freelance journalist Suzanne Baum. There was a live question box where many of the participants had the opportunity to have their questions answered. A wide range of topics were discussed such as how to make healthy choices, combatting stress eating during coronavirus, navigating picky children’s food habits to busting nutritional myths such as ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day.’ Jenna reassured the listeners that a balanced and varied diet is the key towards sustaining a healthy lifestyle. There was good news for so many that the occasional

piece of dark chocolate, as well as tasting delicious, can also help stimulate the adrenal glands! Chai’s chairman Louise Hager introduced the webinar saying: “For over 30 years, education and bringing up to date information to the community has always been central to what we do at Chai. It was the first service that we started with and now we have 64 specialised services. Our inaugural expert lecture was held in Norrice Lea Shul with 400 people and now through a webinar we are able to reach so many more worldwide.” The webinar ended on a ‘Chai’ with a specially commissioned performance of Chai’s unofficial anthem, “To Life” from ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ performed by four of the most famous stars to have played Tevye - Chaim Topol, Dudu Fisher, Andy Nyman and Yehezkel Lazarov.

gingerbread men. In total they raised £508 and donations are still rolling in. The girls comment, “we are so proud that we raised so much from baking and hope our donation helps Chai. Thank you so much to all those who came and supported us. We hope you enjoyed your treats”.

Cherie Blair Zooms in on her life Over 200 people attended online as Cherie Blair recalled her life experiences in a virtual conversation. The leading human rights barrister and judge took part in an interview with Rabbi Jonathan Hughes of the United Synagogue in the City on 1 July. She talked, inter alia, about her immediate family and her parentage, her religion, fighting the causes of women and anti-racism, her rise in the legal profession and the affection for her birthplace Liverpool and the impact that the city’s “melting pot” had had on her. Rabbi Hughes said: “Cherie Blair gave a refreshingly-honest window into her extraordinary experiences which has enthralled the audience.” The event, which took place via Zoom and Facebook, forms part of an outreach programme run by Rabbi Hughes, Rabbi

Thousands of cakes to the community for Jewish Care’s 8th Great Jewish Bake Day Whilst the community couldn’t come to Jewish Care community centres for this year’s 8th Great Jewish Bake Day today, Jewish Care volunteers are going out to the community. Jewish Care chefs as well as volunteers in the community have once again risen to the occasion to help bake and deliver over a thousand cakes so that older people in the community could celebrate Bake Day across London and the South East. Where in previous years the community would be getting together for tea parties, this year, hundreds of cakes have been delivered to Jewish Care community centre members, Holocaust Survivors’ Centre members, supportive tea party guests, Meals on Wheels recipients and tenants of Jewish Care’s independent living homes. In North West and North East London, Supportive Community Tea Parties hosts sent cake to their guests through volunteer delivery drivers who dropped by with cake to say hello. The tea parties that were previously held in volunteer’s living rooms before Covid-19, took place on Zooms instead. Volunteer, Bianca, said, “It was an absolute pleasure to see the joy on people’s faces whilst delivering cakes to the

tea party guests. They were so happy to receive a visit, touched that people had baked for them and were delighted to

have a chat. Everybody was so grateful and we had a lot to talk about!” Community centre coordinators are also sending out baking-themed special edition activity magazines with baking themed crosswords, quizzes and recipes to help older people to stay involved in activities over Bake Day. Jamie Shone, 18-year-old Jewish Care volunteer delivered cake and a goody bag to Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre member, Anita Frankle, 90 for The Great Jewish Bake Day. She said, “It was a lovely surprise to see the young volunteers from Redbridge Jewish Community Centre at my front door and I enjoyed the cake for tea. I speak to my friends and the staff and the staff at the Centre and I look forward to going back to be with everybody.” In care homes, residents are also enjoying Bake Day tea parties this week and some will be tuning in to our intergenerational Zoom webinar with The Challah Mummy, Allegra Benitah, to which the whole community is invited. She will be giving a live demonstration of baking Summer Fruit Challah, especially for Jewish Care. Jewish Weekly columnist and Chef, Denise Phillips also led a Bake Day Junior Chef session on Facebook Live making

delicious Chunky Chocolate Biscuits for Bake Day, so they can continue the tradition of intergenerational baking that is now an established part of the community’s calendar. As well as baking, the community have been donating to help support Jewish Care. Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising & Community Engagement, Adam Overlander-Kaye, says, “We are delighted to see the heart-warming way that the community has come together for The Great Jewish Bake Day. Through online or real-life tea and cake activities for people at home in the community and in our residential care homes, Bake Day has once again, brightened the day of hundreds of older people who are isolated at home in our community. “We would like to thank Allegra Benitah and Denise Phillips, together with all the incredible dedicated volunteers who baked and delivered cake, reaching out to the many hundreds of older people in the community that Jewish Care supports, as well as those who donated to support the charity. It has been a fantastic way for so many people to get involved and to connect us all across the generations through baking.”

Chana launches emergency appeal

PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

For couples struggling with infertility, the impact of Covid-19 means this pandemic won’t only be defined by the devastating number of lives lost, but also the number of lives never created.

An estimated 20,000 rounds of IVF were cancelled during the pandemic along with countless other investigative infertility procedures. Chana, the leading UK fertility support

organisation for the Jewish community, has seen first-hand the distress this has caused and is launching a vital appeal, Worth Every Donation, as it juggles the influx of new clients coupled with the cancellation of all fundraising activities. Rivki,* who had already started the medication necessary for IVF, was two days away from starting treatment, when her clinic called to cancel her first cycle, “I couldn’t take it in. Naively I didn’t expect a private fertility clinic to be affected by the pandemic. My husband and I had waited for years to get to this point and then it was gone,” she explains. “We couldn’t see our doctor and I was overwhelmed with fear that I would never experience pregnancy and never be a mummy.” “The medication can make you very emotional and it’s physically draining. It was all for nothing, preparing me for a pregnancy that now would never come. I felt unbearably isolated and found it impossible to relate to friends and family, talking about home schooling and what time their children were going to bed.” Chana’s Clinical Manager, Romy Shulman adds, “At Chana we’ve seen the closure of clinics become too much to bear for some clients and have been working tirelessly to maintain a high level of

support for couples. We’ve moved all our therapeutic services online and created support groups for others in similar situations.” For Rivki this support has been a lifeline, “the opportunity to share my thoughts, feelings and connect with people going through similar situations... made the week more manageable.” To help couples like Rivki, Chana are launching an emergency appeal, ‘Worth Every Donation on the 12/13 July which aims to raise £700,000 in 36 hours. Carolyn Cohen, Honorary Executive Director explains, “There absolutely will be life after this pandemic and even in the midst of lockdown we were delighted to hear that Chana had its 786th baby born with our help. This news makes us even more determined to be there for couples longing for a family. It would be fantastic if our community could be part of creating this new life, by backing our campaign and helping clients like Rivki take home the greatest gift of all.” For more information visit www.chana. org.uk and visit the link Charityextra.com/ Chana which goes live on July 12th. * The client’s name has been changed to protect her identity.

Riding to raise £255,000 for Aim Habonim BY EDITOR, YOSSI SAUNDERS The ride was an amazing experience. I have written about bike rides for over three years and always wanted to do my bit; this year was finally time. The training was gruelling, the weather wasn’t much better. But on the day itself, the tremendous ruach (goodwill spirit) permeated the air and it was impossible not to get sucked in to this mass fundraiser. The ride went on and on, through beautiful countryside, past rivers, up hills, down hills , zooming past cows, donkeys, sheep and the odd startled bird. The pit stops were crucial, helping me to keep focus mile after mile, and upon arriving in each one, I realized I was getting closer and closer to my goal. The marshals were perfectly stationed, just at the moment before you were about to go the wrong way! It was nice that the Hatzolah cars kept driving round to check how we were doing, and ask if we need a drink or a bite, and their gentle encouraging words really helped keep me going throughout the day.

Yossi’s exhilaration at the finish line

The finish line was euphoric, but most importantly of all, over a quarter of a million pounds was raised, vital funds that will be warmly welcomed. All in all, a brilliantly run event. Can’t wait for next year...

Special event at LSJS Over 400 people gathered virtually on Wednesday 1 July 2020 for a remarkable tribute to mark the 10th Yahrzeit of Marc Weinberg z”l, a leader of Anglo-Jewry and key builder of LSJS. Over 2500 have also now watched the event on facebook. The event was hosted by LSJS on Zoom and led by Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum. It featured a panel of internationally renowned Jewish educators. Tanya White, Dr Daniel Rose and Rachel Fink and Rabbi Zarum explored the topic of ‘Educating the Whole Person’ and what that means in the context of Jewish education. This is a topic that was very dear to Marc Weinberg and which underlies much of the educational philosophy of LSJS in its teacher training and adult education programmes. Key messages were the centrality of role modelling, the importance of educating each child according to their own needs, the difference between ‘being’ and ‘becoming’, and the emphasis of Jewish education being on personality development rather than knowledge acquisition. The panel discussion was followed by moving tributes from members of the family, including Marc’s daughter Ma’ayan and mother Syma and continued as members of the audience added their own thoughts and memories of Marc, reflecting on his legacy and the way in which he touched so many. He was remembered as a ‘real doer’, who also encouraged and inspired others to do more. Passionate about Jewish education,

Last Sunday, the annual Aim Habonim 100km social distance bike ride took place, raising over £255,000 for the Manchester based special needs school.

After studying at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Israel he returned to London, became Mazkir of Bnei Akiva, was instrumental in revitalising LSJS, established the Alei Tzion community, and then led a group to make Aliyah together to Modi’in. He was someone who loved books and learning, despite not opening a book until his late teens. The LSJS library, one of the biggest collections of Jewish books in Europe, was dedicated in his memory as the Marc Weinberg Community Library.

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON This week my writing comes from the fair city of Glasgow. My apologies in advance for the political nature of the column, but it was obvious in a heartbeat just how politicised the country has become. Amongst my musings are indications of how the Scottish First Minister is faring. But firstly to the Arts, which are still feeling the covid hammer blow, by being denied the chance to schedule live performances. Scotland's museums, galleries and theatres are in line for £97 million in financial assistance, as part of a £1.57 billion package from the UK government. The 'repayable finance for these loans will be issued on general terms to ensure they are affordable. I do worry slightly that no matter the generous regional allocations made from central government, there will be a machiavellian manoeuvre amongst die-hard SNP supporters, to undermine anything positive that Boris Johnson and central government does for members of the Union. Nicola, if you think it's easy to be the first minister of a population of 5.5 million, it’s a different game of footie entirely, to be prime minister of a population of 67 million. As an example, I’m a parent of only 7, and there are never less than 9 opinions in my house. Mind you, it’s not a true democracy, but I digress. Let's roll back the referendum, and imagine Scotland had voted out of the UK, and to stay in the EU. How well might Ms Sturgeon have done, had she been obligated to now fund the furlough scheme for a devolved Scotland, instead of receiving critical funding through central government? I doubt she'd be smiling quite so much over her publicity 'cup of tea' these days, given that Scotland has hugely declining industries across many sectors. Those seeking devolution can always throw stones at Westminster. The misquote of Scones and Tea Houses, comes to mind. We've just had the final Clap for Carers to thank the NHS for its industry over the past 3-4 months; next, we're going to see a Smile for Sunak, to thank the Treasury for supporting our livelihoods, for we know in other countries people have suffered massive deprivation and been forced to queue at food banks, to make ends meet. This has been the case in the USA, with people being given a welfare package worth $1,200 each, plus $500 for each dependent, to help them through. Of course, many Americans don’t have Healthcare provision either, if they’re not insured. In the scheme of things then, the UK has a lot going for it. So smile, and be grateful. Taking a peek at Ms Sturgeon's leadership profile within the media, it was

Jacqueline Curzon PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY

What most of us really want, is a more UNITED Kingdom, and for that there can only be one King of Thrones… interesting to see her described as the 'Hermione Granger of politics.' [Times on Sunday]. The Scottish Mail on Sunday says she should be `putting game-playing on hold, and engaging with the UK government in good faith.' Quite right. I have seen worrying reports commenting on a rise in English nationalism, which came as a bit of a surprise for someone who has lived in London for 25 years. Not sure I have heard anyone speak on this, although of course the northern push for independence has been often discussed. My heart sinks when I hear how fast Nicola Sturgeon is driving residents north of the border to break away from the UK, and I think what most of us really want, is a more UNITED Kingdom, and for that there can only be one King of Thrones. Mr Johnson, you have the mandate, The GP will 'virtually' see you now. Ha-ha! Recent reports in The Telegraph [6th July] show that almost 50% of GP appointments are now conducted via phone or video, compared to 14% in February. Now, this might be fine and dandy if your child has chicken pox, or you have a throat infection. You can point a camera at your throat. But it is not fine if you have a stomach pain, or like myself you have some silent symptoms, perhaps as yet undiagnosed, that you perhaps can't quite pin down. During the coronavirus crisis one could completely forgive GP practices for doing phone consultations, but now we have been promoted to having video consultations. Essentially they are keeping their

doors shut, in case - even with the rapidly falling, almost zero cases of coronavirus in the community - your GP should suddenly pick up an infection, and suffer an ignominious death. Chas v'sholom. I have to ask, 'what about the people who were working in the hospitals on the Front Line?' They didn't say they wouldn't go to work, or shut their doors. Many of them became very sick and unfortunately some died. Now that coronavirus has all but gone, the health services should be open, (almost) as usual. When you're speaking on phone or video, you may decide not to bother mentioning something because: he's a busy man; others are more sick than you, etc etc. With a wee wave of the magic wand, YOU could find yourself - like me - in a position of terminal disease, with no chance to press the rewind button. Let’s remind ourselves about those who in the days of old wouldn't have gone to A&E, because they felt the hospital would be ‘too busy,’ or the problem,‘too insignificant.’ They may at least have gone to the GP. Now these same patients won’t go there either, because in all likelihood the GP won't physically see them, or send them for investigation. Besides, the spectre of coronavirus could be here forever.... There will also be folks with anxiety or mental health issues who need that 1:1 contact. So, I'm sorry but I think health professionals should ‘see’ their clients, unless you have something visible, and non-intimate. Dr Dan Poulter, Conservative MP, former health minister and psychiatrist, expressed his concerns that,‘GP's are unable to properly examine a patient during a virtual appointment.’ If you have something potentially embarrassing or difficult or awkward, you're hardly going to say to the GP, 'I'll just point the camera at 'it.’ You likely won't even mention 'it,’ and so you'll persevere, perhaps only finally going to the GP or your A&E when 'it' has become a major problem. I haven't talked often about my initial diagnosis of cancer, but I will mention it again for those who are new to the column. Had I not gone to the surgery and mentioned a few seemingly irrelevant issues, thereby allowing my GP to have a quick poke under my ribs, and order up some blood tests, I very much doubt that my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer would have been picked up. He would have had no need to order blood tests as I wasn't even jaundiced, the biggest red flag in the pancreatic torpedo room, and even today, I doubt I would likely feel ‘ill enough‘ to seek medical attention. This inertia will seal the fate of many going forward, who will consider themselves fit enough, well enough to not waste the GP's time. The chairman of the Royal College of

GP's predicts a 50% split between these traditional and virtual appointments in the future. In my own practice you're not given the choice, in fact you may even be triaged or ‘prescribed' something by the receptionist. Now no matter how talented and lovely they are, they are not qualified doctors, and even if they’re following a checklist of 'call-out symptoms' (much like the 111 service), this is insufficient and too removed to show due diligence. Once again I say emphatically, there are patients out there who will just simply not make the call. Let's get our surgeries properly open, and the doctors on the 'domestic' frontline back to work. No virtual consultations please, unless specifically asked for, or for straightforward minor cases. The onus is on the GP to bring you in for a face-to-face because this could be important. I asked my GP how many pancreatic clients he had (euphemistically) lost in his career? One. And I know I will likely be next. With only 6:100 surviving five years, it drops down to a woeful 1:100 if you are stage 4. Therefore, that visit could be lifesaving. The covid-19 crisis could additionally lead to an extra 35,000 cancer deaths this year, because of late diagnosis and delayed access to treatment. We knew this was coming. Research by data-can, revealed by the BBC Panorama programme, has shown that by the end of May, urgent cancer referrals were down by nearly 50%. Professor Pat Price, clinical oncologist [Imperial College], said too much treatment was being delayed on the basis of NHS guidelines in a ‘very high risk strategy.’ She further added, 'guidelines for radiotherapy were to delay or avoid (it) in some cases, and consequently the machines were left idle when they could be saving lives.' At least we should have been given the choice. Petty - yes, W(h)itty - no. Lastly, an update on my own treatment. After suffering again from the alopecia of Abraxane, I made the difficult decision to stop it, awarding myself a treatment break, after which I'll hopefully have a repeat scan. It’s likely I may go back on Folfirinox, as I seemed to cope with it fairly well. At least, I felt like a regular person who just happened to have cancer, as opposed to a person who looked like a cancer patient, with all the negativity and attention it attracts. My most recent scan shows stability in my primary disease, improvement in the lymph nodes and a stalemate on the lung lesions. In any exam score, 2 out of 3 is a pass. In the interim I'm continuing all my alternative therapies and making no plans to ‘go out,’ and I don’t mean to the shops. I will keep laughing, keep busy and keep fighting. New Business support just in time Unprecedented, exceptional, extraordinary… words that are common parlance in the face of this once in a generation pandemic. And whilst until now, focus has been on safety, the ensuing economic impact and anticipated recession is, according to experts, going to be staggering. Nevertheless, now could be the perfect time to tap into emerging opportunities, by changing the way businesses operate, or even starting a new company. The hiatus of lockdown allowed for productive time to reflect, explore fresh solutions and pursue different business goals. As we slowly emerge, this may be a time to capture the sentiment, grasp new opportunities that spring up, and look at developing growth markets.

With this in mind, JCommerce, a Manchester based business support charity, is running a series of webinars to help new business start-ups and small medium enterprises (SME’s) achieve their ambitions. JCommerce aims to assist businesses with financial concerns, sharing tips and guidance to the most common problems, with a slant towards the specific challenges of the current crisis. It might feel counter-intuitive to set up a new business at this stage of a global pandemic. Yet starting a business now is no different to opening a business at any other time. It requires drawing up a business plan, working out start-up costs (which may be minimal if operating from home), identifying customer markets,

delivery options for the product and/or service, as well as researching promotion tactics and how to finance the business. The JCommerce business webinars, supported by National Lottery ‘Awards 4 All’, will provide information to support small developing and start-up businesses, with expert networking, financial, accountancy, legal, insurance and marketing advice. Promoting the sort of innovative thinking that businesses need to transform the way they operate, industry experts will help businesses navigate the challenges that lie ahead and focus on the critical components required to cushion the economic impact of the recession, as well as run a successful business. Will Kintish, one of the Webinar speakers and author of ‘The Survival Guide: How to make networking less about stress and more about success’ admits that now, more than ever, creating business opportunities will set you apart from the crowd. “Because of social distancing we cannot attend networking events or conferences. My mantra of ‘The strategy for survival, is visibility’ is even more relevant in these turbulent times.” The programme intends to skill-up individuals to fulfil their potential, encourage economic self-sufficiency and make a real difference to the long-term sustainability of businesses. Some of the topics covered include business planning, cash reserves, business marketing and building

networks, to encourage a pro-active route to recovery. When many established SME’s (Small medium enterprises) are bound to struggle, a supportive organisation which is solution focused, is really welcomed. JCommerce is looking to the future with a mixture of resilience and optimism, building an environment that encourages and supports business growth, by providing tools and resources for innovative ways forward. Services that they are exploring for the future, include access to Business mentors and business advice tips via email. The Government has temporarily delayed the financial impact, by cushioning employees through the furlough scheme, or with numerous small business loans and grants as well as tax delay and relief arrangements. However, at some point, business owners, particularly SME’s, are going to have to pick themselves up, brush themselves down and move on. For some, it is difficult to know where to start. JCommerce is looking to fill this gap by providing specialist business support and connecting to experts, boosting growth and making a positive impact on the community. LAUNCH OF JEWISH WEEKLY MONEY TRANSFERS Introducing a new strategic partnership with award winning online marketplace CurrencyTransfer.com. Readers can now take advantage of faster, cheaper, and more transparent international money transfers. A Handy Guide To Sending Money Abroad

By Nathan Perez, Head of Israel Desk at CurrencyTransfer.com

Powered by

OYA BROCH! DON’T GET STUNG BY HIDDEN BANK FEES WWW.CURRENCYTRANSFER.COM/JEWISHWEEKLY

The ‘Hidden’ & ‘Obvious’ Fees Stay Alert To Volatility Traps Banks make money in two ways. First, they charge a fixed fee of up to £40 per payment when sending money abroad. You may also be hit with unexpected corresponding bank fees and get a nasty shortfall on the receiving end. The second and biggest fee is almost always built inside the exchange rate. How far away from the real mid-market rate you are being quoted, i.e. the spread, distinguishes between a good or bad money transfer deal. Transparent FinTech (Financial Technology) focused online platforms will clearly display the markup being applied. Aim for spreads well inside 1% from mid-market. Quite simply, it boils down to the following: How many shekels or euros will I receive for my British Pounds, after ALL charges.

“To partner with such a forward-thinking newspaper epitomizes the power of FinTech and the ability to positively disrupt traditional markets, drive competition, and support new entrants. Whether you are buying a dream home in Israel or importing goods, don’t let the banks cash in on your international money transfers.”

Daniel Abrahams, Chairman of the CurrencyTransfer.com Group

It Pays To Shop Around Alternative finance is on the rise. It’s bred a new wave of non-bank currency specialists who can offer vastly superior rates, often up to £4,000 cheaper for every £100,000 you transfer. It pays to compare as banks typically apply spreads of 2-5% away from the mid-market rate. Make sure you are comparing ‘apples to apples.’ Benchmark rates as close to real-time as possible for accuracy in comparison.

Failing to fix the exchange rate and not budgeting the cost of currency is one of the biggest mistakes overseas property buyers can make. Last year, the Reuben family approached us as they were buying a 4.5 million ILS apartment in Netanya, for completion in March 2020. It would have cost £965,665 on the 22nd of December. Immediately after Securing the property, they logged in to the CurrencyTransfer.com platform to reserve the rate via a ‘forward contract’, even though completion wasn’t for a few months. They wanted peace of mind the property price would NOT increase. Due to the poor performance for Sterling against the Israeli shekel, that same property would have been over £100,000 more expensive at £1,068,665 on the 22nd March.

Holiday Dining BY DENISE PHILLIPS For many people the idea of going abroad this summer is continuing ‘food for thought’! Although flights may be cheap, insurance is an issue and local lockdowns may present further unexpected restrictions. The vaccine is still a dream and you may have to self-quarantine on your return. However, recreating the taste of the Med or flavours from the Far East can be a fun and tasty way to feel connected to somewhere wonderful faraway. And it’s a lot cheaper and safer! Our supermarkets are full of authentic ingredients and many recipes are not too challenging to make at home. How about trying ‘Dishes From Around The World Night’- dedicating one dinner a week to food from another country? From tagine to tagliatelle and paella to poppadum’s – eat Al Fresco if the weather permits. With some scented flowers and candles on the table and the use of aromatic fresh herbs and spices in your food you are nearly there!! Use authentic tableware if you have it-somehow ramen noodles are more delicious served in an oriental bowl and eaten with chopsticks rather than in your Friday Night soup bowl and eaten with a spoon. Forget the takeaway and supermarket ready meals. Cook it yourself from freshso many recipes are available, and you will know exactly what you are eating and when and how it was made. Some suggestions;

Tex Mex meals like vegetable chilli, tacos, black bean enchiladas, courgette and cheese quesadillas are not difficult to make. Indian dishes such as chicken tikka masala (using coconut or soya yoghurt), rogan josh and lamb biriani are delicious home-made and you can control the level of spiciness!! Or make it a vegetarian experience with aloo gobi, vegetable curry or a rich lentil dhal with crispy onions. Thai food including pad Thai, Thai green curry and Thai steamed fish with fragrant jasmine rice. Many of these recipes and other favourites from abroad are on my website www.jewishcookery.com Above is one of my favourites: Thai Tofu salad with griddled pineapple

ASK THE RABBI

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com BACK INTO THE RING

Dear Rabbi I look forward to reading your Ask the Rabbi in the Jewish Weekly every week. Torah endorses dispute and differences of opinion (as long as it is conducted appropriately and respectfully) so with that introduction I begin: Last week you replied to a father querying if his son can join a boxing club even though it’s a “violent sport” etc. You addressed the question halachically (although in my opinion you have given the wrong ruling and the sources you quoted are not a similar comparison at all). I do appreciate you have to be open minded in your responses but ethically/philosophically you have not responded to his query at all. On the contrary you have supported it by saying you do this kind/similar sport too! It is without a doubt a violent sport and it’s in violation of “and in their ways you shall not follow” and “do not sit in the company of mockers,” and in violation of the prohibition of causing a wound onto another. That’s my opinion for what it’s worth. However, I am not a Rabbi, nor the son of one but would appreciate a response from one. Warm regards and once again we really enjoy your articles. Mark Dear Mark Thank you for taking the time to write. Though you begin by coming from an ethical perspective you dive straight into the Halacha. So let’s deal with that

first: Maimonides taught that it is forbidden to injure another “in a contentious manner.” (Hilkhot Chovel u’mazik 5:1) By definition, if consent is given by both sides, then technically there is no violation of “causing a wound to another.” This, as per the Talmud (Bava Kama 93a): “one may waive liabilities to damages in advance.” Albeit some Jewish authorities have argued that one may not harm another even if they give their consent (Shulachan Aruch Harav hilchot Nizkai Haguf # 4). Your thinking in questioning the sources I cited last week is that if boxing posed only a minimal risk to participants, Jewish law might allow our participation (like hockey, contact football, and wrestling), but boxing poses a moderate to very high risk of injury to the participants. And you would be right if one were entering into violent situations or sport in the pursuit of fame or money. That was my point. Self-defence is, of course, permitted (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 184:1), and martial arts, which includes a variety of forms – boxing, wrestling, krav maga, and a host of Eastern techniques. People participate in these activities as a means of building physical strength, developing self-confidence, and learning strategies of self-defence. Many find much value and enjoyment in their experience of martial arts. That’s what the father was asking regarding his son and that is the basis of my answer, which I maintain, remains eminently permissible. If the son writes to me in twenty

Tehillim Psalm 149 This psalm is full of lofty praise for Hashem. The penultimate psalm of Tehillim has been made into an ever popular Avram Fried song. ‘Yismach Yisrael beosav, bnei Tzion yagoilo vmalcolm – Let Israel rejoice in it’s Maker, let the children of Tzion rejoice in their King.’ According to the Soforno, even though all the nations of the world were made by G-d, Israel is His Chosen People, and therefore merits the right to say we were chiefly made by Him. We praise Hashem with dancing, drums and with the harp we make music to Him. In the Temple of old, music was commonplace, unlike today when most people prefer davening to be over as quickly as possible. Speed is more important these days to the

years and asks whether he can enter professional boxing, I will consider it then most likely in a different context. So keep reading, be sure to look out for it, and feel free to write back then.

OF BOYFRIENDS & FAITH

Dear Rabbi My daughter is getting to that age where she’s becoming interested in boys. She doesn’t go to a Jewish school, and I fear she is going to attract attention from boys we will not be able to approve of. How do I handle this without having her resent us? Mandy Dear Mandy I handed my son a bottle of whisky and now I fear he will consider opening it and develop a drinking habit, which we, of course, do not approve of. What do we do? Option A – take away the bottle. There are plenty of Jewish schools that offer the same high standard of education. Option B – far be it for me to judge, and you might well have legitimate reasons for sending your daughter where you have, but then the onus is on you, from now, to start talking to her about the meaning of her Jewish identity and why it is so wrong to marry out. More than anything, and I know a lot of wonderful Jewish kids who went to non-Jewish schools, set the example in the home. When a child experiences Jewish ritual and practice in the home, they will intuitively feel a conflict between that and the possibility

of a long term relationship with someone not of their same faith.

A CORONA WEDDING

Dear Rabbi I am due to get married next month. The tensions leading up to the wedding are unbearable what with all the corona restrictions. For fourteen months everything is bliss. Now in the final countdown everything is going pear-shape. Is this a sign that she’s not the right one for me? Eric Dear Eric Are you kidding me? For more than a year you’re blissfully happy

masses then joyously singing to Hashem, even if people linger afterwards in the Kiddush... The righteous sing joyously in their beds, when they recite Kriat Shema each night before retiring, safe and secure in the knowledge that G-d will protect from all harm. ‘The lofty praises of Hashem are in their throats.’ This pasuk reminds us of the famous quote from our ancestor Yitzchak when Yaakov came in to trick him into receiving the blessings. ‘Hakol, kol Yaakov, vhayadayim yedei Eisav – The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Eisav.’ By using our throats to sing and daven to Hashem, we can overcome the bloodthirsty murderers descending from

Eisav who have been killing us for millennia. May this dream be realized in true and stunning fashion with the coming of Mashiach, speedily in our days, Amen.

and now, when tensions creep in you wonder whether she’s the right one?! If anything it’s a sign that you’re spoiled. Here’s a heads up buddy! Life is full of disappointments and marriage has its fair share of tensions. Are you going to question your nuptials each time something goes wrong in your relationship? It is precisely when you are not yet committed to one another that it is easy to panic in the face of tension and use the stresses as an excuse to reconsider. Once married however, you’ll appreciate that the invariable tensions are all part of the building blocks of a good relationship.

Corona Diary #11 The Backward River BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN The primary Hebrew word for inheritance is “yerusha. However, the Torah supplies an additional term for inheritance– the word “nachalah”- and the eighth perek of Bava Batra which begins by listing the legal inheritors is named “yesh nochalin”. Interestingly, this term “nachala” describes inheritance but also refers to a “nachal” or a river. Through inheritance, family wealth is ‘continued’ or sustained just as a river exhibits continuous flow. Inheritance and a river share an additional feature- they are each unidirectional. Gravity determines that a river flows in only one direction; similarly, worldly possessions stream in one direction- from previous generations to future generations. There is one exception, or one inheritance which flowed backward- from a current generation to a previous one. The first inheritance in halachik history- the allocation of the land of Israel functioned in an atypical fashion – as a “backward” flowing river. Each Jew of the new generation, who entered Israel, received a personal portion of land; the allocated lands of all cousins who entered were then grouped into larger packages of land which reverted back to the previous generation- effectively to the “Uncles” who had departed Egypt but who, sadly never made it to Israel. Those land parcels of the cousins were then equally divided among all the deceased Uncles; Subsequently each Uncle’s share of the package was inherited by his children who entered Israel. For example, a single Israeli child with many cousins would ultimately receive more than just his single land allocation. His numerous cousins would each receive land, and the entire family’s package would revert to previous generation and then ultimately back to the new generation which entered Israel. A lone child who entered Israel would receive some of the lands which his cousins were allocated, which reverted to his own father, and ultimately trickled down to himself. This was the only inheritance in history which reversed through previous generations; it flowed upstream to the previous generation before trickling back down to the current generation. It was a backward river! This reverse inheritance acknowledged the sacrifice and courage of that original “pioneering” generation which was enslaved in Egypt and had eloped into the wilderness with G-d. They had suffered miserably in Egypt and ignoring their role

in this journey would be morally insensitive, especially given their tragic death in the sands of an anonymous desert. Their suffering in Egypt, their courage at the Red Sea, and their vision at Sinai all enabled the ultimate arrival in Israel. Routing the allocation of Israeli lands through the past generation is a “shout-out” to their accomplishments and, of course, a memorial to the tragedy of their death in the desert. However, this rearward inheritance process isn’t just a moral accommodation. The Jewish deed to the land of Israel spans centuries of faith and generations of heroes whose lives were devoted to a land which G-d had bestowed, but which humanity rarely acquiesced to. The entry of this generation into the land of Israel must be accompanied by historical consciousness and expanded imagination. The new generation isn’t merely a fortunate generation who randomly hit the jackpot – to enter the land of dreams. The “entering” generation represents previous generations of dreamers and by passing their shares back to the previous generation, the historical process of acquiring Israel is showcased. Typically, talmidim who depart Yeshiva, ask me for some ‘takeway’ ideas or core values. I always encourage them to live lives of “verticality”. Our lives aren’t isolated points but rather points on a line – a lineage of Jewish history; we are the beneficiaries of previous generations and the pioneers of future ones. Vertical lifestyles reduce self-interest and integrate us to larger generational trajectories. This past Shabbat I attended a kiddush with 23-year old, post-army talmidim. I asked them each to discuss an aspect of our lives which would be permanently altered by the Corona crisis. One boy mentioned that the crisis provided him with a deeper appreciation of the elder generation. Much of our efforts – at least during the initial stages of the virus- have been geared toward preserving the health and well-being of older people- many of whom were quarantined in lonely conditions. This boy predicted that our society would become more sensitive to the needs of the previous generation. I hope his predictions are fulfilled. So many cultural forces have thinned our relationships with the elder generation. Dramatic advances in transportation and communication seduced us into relocating at great distances from our families; we were convinced that technology would assist us in preserving these relationships. The breakneck pace

9 JULY 2020

Dramatic advances in transportation and communication seduced us into relocating at great distances from our families… of our modern professional lives left little time for intergenerational interaction. Whatsapps replaced relationship-building. Our communities generated sufficient wealth to create institutional living space for elders. Medical advances convinced us that the previous generation would live longer lives: we had plenty of time to reconnect. Will this be of the great cultural corrections of the Corona crisis? Will we emerge more connected to, and appreciative of, previous generations? Will we ponder their generation, their lives and the stiff challenges they faced and gain a better sense of how we benefited from their accomplishments? In the early to mid-20th century many economies were pivoted upon a six-day work week. Under those financially trying conditions, halachik Shabbat observance was almost impossible and those who maintained Shabbat observance were heroic in ways which far surpass the religious commitment which we celebrate in the modern era. Will this

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

appreciation help us overcome built-in generation gaps which so often prevent younger generations from respecting the values of previous generations? Will this historical vision bolster our resolve in facing modern challenges and navigating the current crisis? Often a clear sense of past struggles, provides vital perspective upon our current adversity. In so many ways, the hardships we are currently enduring seem minor in light of the immense challenges faced during the Holocaust and the early stages of the State of Israel. Will this be a moment in which the relationships between generations is rebooted? Will the prophecy of Malachi of “turning hearts of children back to their parents” come true? Will the River flow backward? Rabbi Moshe Taragin has taught at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, for the past 22 years.

Weekly Dvar Torah F R OM E R E TZ YISRAE L

Two educational tools for the times of corona BY SIVAN RAHAV-MEIR These are not ordinary days. Not for students, not for parents nor for teachers. In times of hardship – we should return to our base, to the source, to the Parsha. The weekly portions – even when not read in shul – are a reservoir of power and strength, especially during this difficult time. Here are two principles that Parshat Pinchas teaches us, in preparation for a particularly challenging summer ahead:

MAINTAINING A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE LAND OF ISRAEL AND THE DIASPORA

This week’s Parsha tells us about “half of Menashe.” Why is this tribe divided? This is referring to half of the Menashe tribe, who went to live in East Jordan along with the tribes of Reuven and Gad. At first, only Reuven and Gad wanted to live there, but Moshe sends this half of Menashe with them as well. Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, known as the Netziv, explains that Moshe sent half of Menashe to join the

other two tribes – as emissaries, as a mission of life. In the words of the Netziv, they were sent there “so there would be there bnei Torah.” They are there to make sure that Reuven and Gad’s geographical distance from Jerusalem will not be a spiritual distance as well, so it will not be a community that is too remote and severed. Perhaps this is also the reason why only half of the tribe of Menashe was sent – half of it stayed closer so that familial social ties meant that the Menashe clan itself would not be confused and would stay connected. This is a job for us too. To always have half our heart in Israel, and half in the Diaspora, no matter where we live. We are brothers, one family, and we need to send physical emissaries, but also use technological means to constantly feel Jerusalem, Israel, and beyond – so as not to forget our millions of brothers and sisters outside of Israel.

EDUCATION = EXPERIENCE

The Parsha tells of the daughters of Tzlofchad, five women who applied for a

portion of land in Israel and were a symbol of optimism and faith. The commentators explain that all women of that generation were happy and wanted to enter the Land, while almost all the men were pessimistic and discouraged. This was a recurring phenomenon – during the Exodus from Egypt, the righteous women led us to salvation and drove the men. At the time of the sin of the Golden Calf the men led, while at the time of building the Mishkan it was the women who volunteered first. In the sin of the spies, most of the men sinned while the women wanted to go on and enter the Land, and in the Korach dispute, there were also women who tried to stop the difficult controversy. Rabbi Moshe Zvi Neria learns from this a tremendous educational principle. Moshe and Aharon educated the men, Miriam educated the women and notice the difference: “Miriam succeeded in her educational work more than her two brothers, Moshe and Aharon, because of the secret of educational success – in personal connection with those being educated. After all, we are told that Miriam

sings and dances with the women. ‘Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her in dance with timbrels’ (Shemot 15:20). This happened not only during the Exodus but throughout the wanderings of the wilderness. Miriam used to sing and dance with them, forge personal experiences with them, make close contact.” Education – Rabbi Neria explains – is not only taught through lectures and lessons. Education is also based on experiences, memories, melodies and personal attitudes. Rabbi Neria himself became known for his songs and melodies. This is an extraordinary time in the education system: we had far fewer lessons and tests, we hardly met in the classrooms. But this is the opportunity to employ meaningful educational experiences, for life. Have a healthy and happy summer! A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE

War and Peace RABBI GOODMAN Peace is one of those sought-after commodities that remain sought-after and rarely found. Like many virtuous attributes, peace does not come free of charge. It takes immense effort and determination, together with an awesome degree of selflessness, a quality that unfortunately tends to evade us Homo sapiens at the best of times. If we gave a piece of our heart as often as we give a piece of our mind, then peace might not be so difficult to come by. Among its numerous definitions, the Concise Oxford Dictionary (one of my few remaining Bar Mitzvah presents) defines peace as, “Freedom from or the cessation of war.” Although they are not necessarily opposites, war and peace certainly do not share common ground. The scenes of euphoric bliss which “peace” suggests are a far throw from the devastating images of carnage and slaughter

which war recalls. Yet, despite the Concise Oxford Dictionary’s definition and our mind’s eye, the Torah equates war with peace in this week’s Parsha. When Zimri, in the presence of Moshe Rabbeinu and Bnei Yisroel, unashamedly sinned with Cozbia Midianite woman- Pinchos sprang into action and in one swift movement, speared Zimri and Cozbi, terminating their transgression and ending their lives. Referring to this act of hostility and bloodshed, Hashem declared to Moshe, “Behold! I give him [Pinchos] my covenant of peace.” Incredibly, for his act of war, Hashem awarded Pinchos with the first ever peace prize. Rabbi Moshe Shternbuch, the current Vice-President of the Rabbinical Court and Head of the Eidah HaChareidis in Jerusalem, explains that although Pinchos’s act resembled an act of war, its essence was an act of peace. In Proverbs (3:17,) King Solomon says about the Torah “Its

ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace.” This means that Torah observance generates a relationship of peace and harmony between Bnei Yisroel and Hashem which brings peace to the world. When a person violates the Torah, he shatters that special relationship. Therefore, by eradicating Zimri’s flagrant violation of the Torah, Pinchos successfully repaired Bnei Yisroel’s shattered relationship with Hashem, thereby restoring peace to the world. Remarkably, Torah creates peace. Not only is this true on a national level, but on a personal one too. Achieving and maintaining Shalom Bayis- marital harmony- certainly does take a lot of work, but with a spiritual stream of Torah and Mitzvos flowing through your front door, the job becomes a whole lot easier. 32 JUDAISM

Pinchas RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE

WHY WAS GOD ANGRY?

The sidra says that Pinchas turned God’s anger away (Num. 26:11). Why was God angry? The obvious reason is that the people of Israel were caught up in a difficult situation and might succumb to moral temptation. By stepping into the fray Pinchas he showed his zeal for the Almighty. Rashi, however, offers an alternative point of view. He says that God was livid with the tribes of Israel who had spread rumours about Pinchas and criticised his genealogy, casting doubt on his lineage and saying that his grandfather had been an idol-worshipper. Why did Rashi get involved in genealogy and ascribe the criticisms to the tribes in general and not to the tribe of Shimon whose prince, Zimri, had been killed by Pinchas? Zimri certainly deserved to be punished for openly consorting with Kozbi, a Midianite woman, in the Israelite camp. The Lubavitcher Rebbe thinks the tribes were only trying to uphold the honour of Moses and Aaron and their attack on Pinchas was motivated by suspicion that there were inherited flaws in his character which led him to act rashly. God would have preferred Pinchas to remember that he was a kohen and should not need special Divine help.

A MOUTH OF BRASS

Only five of the fifty-four sidrot are named after people, beginning with No’ach in the

TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488 book of Genesis. This current sidra is named after Pinchas, and we can use this as a convenient moment to speak about protesting. Indeed, one of the interpretations of the name Pinchas is “mouth of brass”, suggesting that he is the forebear of those who mount protests. The Jewish doctrine of protest can be summarised in these ten commandments: 1. Don’t remain silent. Even if you are not heard you have to give voice to your conscience. 2. Instead of ranting, use “a disciplined tongue” (Isaiah 50:4). 3. Rebuke out of love. The Torah says, “Do not hate your brother in your heart” (Lev. 19:17). 4. Don’t tell people what to think: give them the facts and let them draw their own conclusions. 5. Avoid overkill, in words and actions. 6. Avoid violence: don’t hit people or destroy property, but persuade. 7. Stick to the real agenda - don’t wrap up the issue in extraneous considerations. 8. Don’t give up in the middle. 9. Don’t make your own side the enemy. 10. Don’t play God.

WHERE WAS MOSES?

The story of Pinchas centres upon a display of temper. Some people erupt all the time, others very rarely, and some hardly ever. I knew a certain president who kept calm under the greatest provocation until one evening when a council member got under his skin and there was an explosion. Later I said to my friend, “That was rather unusual for you!”, and he replied, “I had to react. I never lose my temper except on purpose!” Does this tell us anything about Pinchas, who saw the Divine law being flouted

Mesillat Yesharim: Part 44 RABBI MORDECHAI ULLMAN We continue with the mode of conduct of the humble. We learn about a very unique level this week - bearing insults. The Talmud teaches that one who is forgiving can hope Heaven will likewise be to them. A most famous portion in the Talmud says, “One who is offended but does not offend, hears their insult but does not respond, serves G-d with love and rejoices in suffering, it is said on them ‘and His (G-d’s) friends are like the sun in its strength’”. A huge amount of self-control is often asked for when receiving insults but one must appreciate that the benefits of “closing one’s mouth during an argument” is such that we are told that the entire world exists in their merit. A further sign of a humble person is that they avoid positions of “Rabbanut” and flee from honour. The Mishna in

Avot teaches that one who is proud in rendering Halacha is a fool and arrogant. Similarly, one who pursues honour, honour runs away from them. Public leadership, whether in a secular manner such as political position, or even in spiritual contexts such as Rabbanut, although being a privilege (the latter being a true privilege, the former not always so…) is in many ways a huge burden (would you actually wish to be the man in No. 10 during Covi-19?!). All a servant of G-d would wish to do is serve G-d in peace. Once they are in a position of power or influence, they must exercise extreme caution as they may well be held accountable for the shortfalls of the people under their care. Worldly honour is worthless; true honour comes from learning Torah and keeping Mitzvot and from being a truly honourable person. Recognition and admiration is simply of no substance.

whilst the people “wept at the door of the tent of assembly”, and stepped forward and executed summary justice on the man and woman – Zimri and Kozbi – who were acting so brazenly in public? We understand what Pinchas did: as far as he was concerned, the whole moral teaching of the Torah was being challenged and someone had to step forward and act. But do we know why it was left to Pinchas to “avert the plague”? Where was Moses? Rashi attempts to stand up for Moses by saying, “The halachic ruling escaped his mind for the moment”. In other words, Moses – despite being at least as shocked as Pinchas – was not sure of the right thing to do. Yet Moses did have a temper as we see from his response when the people riled him beyond the point of endurance and he shouted at them and hit the rock to which he was supposed to speak quietly with the request that water be sent forth for the people (Num. 20:11). So why did he not shout and lose his temper this time? Possibly he felt uneasy at having given way to anger on the occasion of the water incident and was now searching for a way of handling a crisis without losing his temper. But with hindsight we might have to conclude that there is a time for a short fuse, and this was that kind of time. Pinchas may have been impulsive, but his was the better instinct.

THE RIVAL EMOTIONS

The Jewish calendar has two groups of dates that battle with one another for the soul of the Jew. On the one hand there are the festivals, days of joy and happiness: on the other the

9 JULY 2020

fast days, which remind us of gloom and tragedy. Amongst the fasts are four which mark the destruction of the Temple and seem to create a cycle of sadness. Chief amongst these four fasts is Tishah B’Av, but the fast of 17 Tammuz, three weeks earlier, is a prominent date in the cycle. The rivalry between the feasts and the fasts is symbolised by two emotions – the lachrymose (the tearful) and the love and laughing. The way Jewish history has played out we see a trail of tragedy and fear that more is to come; we see a series of simchas and hope there will be many more of them. The Jewish spirit has, Baruch HaShem, made its choice, and we are an optimistic people who prefer dreams to nightmares.. Rabbi Apple served for 32 years as the chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, Australia’s oldest congregation. He is now retired and lives in Jerusalem. Rabbi Apple blogs at http://www.oztorah.com

Hilchot Shabbat Is there anything I need to be aware of when preparing hot drinks on Shabbat? One of the 39 categories of Melacha that are forbidden on Shabbat is “Bishul” which literally translates as cooking but includes baking and other forms of activity that involve changing a material through heat. Generally speaking, the Talmud teaches that only a container that either is on the fire or has just come of the fire has the ability to cook raw material. This is known as a “Keli Rishon” – a “primary” utensil. Assuming this utensil has a certain hot temperature (“Yad Soledet Bo”, and there is of course a discussion as to what temperature this is), it would cook material or raw food. The utensil into which the contents of a Keli Rishon are poured is called a “secondary” utensil and it is there that can begin considering if it has the capability of cooking. Not only does the primary utensil have the ability to cook, if its contents (say for example boiling hot water) are poured from it onto a raw food, we assume that the surface of whatever is inside the second container would be cooked, involving a prohibition of cooking. When it comes to hot drinks therefore, one must ensure not to pour hot water not from an urn nor from a primary utensil

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

onto raw food such as a piece of lemon, tea leaves or tea bags. It is also forbidden to place tea leaves or the like into a “secondary” utensil as, being an easily cooked food, it will cook even in there. Rav Elyashiv was of the opinion that as long as the water being used is the aforementioned heat it is even forbidden to use a tertiary etc utensil. Rav Moshe Feinstein, however said that one may use a tertiary utensil. Next week we will discuss the laws surrounding coffee granules that have been pre roasted and brewed.

Pinchas Word Search

Parshat Pinchas opens with the great blessing that was given to Pinchas for his brave action that saved the Jewish people. He and his children forever will be Kohanim. The Jewish people over the age of 20 are now counted again. We learn about how to share out the holy land that the Jewish people are about to enter. Five sisters came to Moshe asking that they too be given a portion and Hashem agreed with their request. We also are told about Moshe being told to appoint a new leader for the Jewish people – Yehoshua, his prize student. Finally we learn all about the laws of the Musaf – the extra sacrifice that we bring each Shabbat and festival days in the Beit Hamikdash. We can no longer do so today, but in place of it we have a special prayer called Mussaf, in which we ask Hashem to bring us all up to Jerusalem once again where we will celebrate together and truly experience the full excitement of a Shabbat and Yom Tov!

Pinchas

In a nutshell Are you ready for a ride “Around the Year”? This week’s sidra covers so much but perhaps most famously the various sacrifices that were brought on each of the Jewish festivals. We bring a Korban Mussaf, an extra sacrifice service on each of the festivals, and to commemorate that, we have one extra Tefilla each Shabbat and Yom Tov. But first, for the name of the sidra, Pinchas. This young gentleman, a grandson of Aaron the Kohen Gadol no less, acts with bravery and brings an end to a terrible plague that fell upon the nation. As a reward for his quick action, he was rewarded with the blessing of peace and with earning the right to be a Kohen too. We are reminded who exactly caused the sin that caused the plague - Midian and that they are to be duly punished at a later date. In the meantime, the Jews over the age of twenty are once again counted. As you may have heard before, something very precious to you is counted often, and

we are Hashem’s beloved nation, so when a sizeable percentage of the Jewish nation has unfortunately perished in a plague, G-d requests us to be counted so we remember how important we are. The counting leads to laws of inheritance and how to divide the land of Israel between the tribes. In a marvellous ceremony, later in history, Elazar the Kohen stood with lots. On one side he had twelve pieces of paper with the names of the tribes and on the other hand he had twelve pieces of paper stating portions of the land. The prince of each tribe would pick one from each hand and they would thereby know which piece of land went to whom. This in turn led to a family of 5 sisters approaching Moshe and saying, “Our father died in the wilderness why should we lose out and not receive any land?” So Moshe approaches Hashem Who approves their request for a portion and advises that in a case where a man dies without sons, the daughters can inherit. (Some say that

if there are brothers alive then it is their duty to support their unmarried sisters as the Torah usually only gave them the inheritance.) Moshe is told to appoint a successor as, although he would be allowed to look at the holy land, he would not be allowed to enter it following hitting the rock at Mei Meriva. Yehoshua, the trusted student of Moshe is appointed and Hashem tells Moshe that with any problem Yehoshua may face, he should consult the Urim v”Tumim, which rested on Elazar the Kohen Gadol and he would understand from there what to do in case of doubt. It must have been hard for Moshe to not have his son succeed him, but our sages applied ther words of King Solomon - he who guards a date (fruit) shall eat its fruit. Yehoshua, who was constantly near his Rabbi, was the one who was deemed worthy of being his successor and the transmitter of the Torah, a link higher up in the chain that we are proud to continue!

Liverpool got back to winning ways against Aston Villa last weekend after the Etihad loss, Sadio Mane and Curtis Jones securing the points for Jurgon Klopp’s team. The Reds followed up with a 3-1 win at Brighton & Hove Albion last night, Mohamed Salah grabbing a brace. Graham Potter’s Brighton are among a clutch of teams on ‘easy street’ in mid-table. Everton and Southampton are in that category, tonight’s clash is barely noticeable among games of note. The relegation battle is all that needs to be resolved. Norwich City are Championship-bound with presently Villa, also after a solitary term, and Bournemouth the most likely teams to join them. Historically though teams have made a late surge to survive while another hits the buffers so all is not lost. Strugglers West Ham United and Watford have picked up vital points recently to help avoid the drop. The Hammers appeared to have turned a corner but surprisingly went down to a 1-0 home defeat against Burnley last night and are now level on points with the Bees who earned a crucial 2-1 win over Norwich on Tuesday. Free transfer Danny Welbeck provided a second half winner for Watford, his first for the club, with a sensational overhead kick to complete a comeback victory. Liverpool and City will be expected to account for Burnley and Brighton, Chelsea and Manchester United should have too much for Southampton and Sheffield United, but there may be a surprise for Leicester on the south coast against Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth. This could be a pivotal game for the Cherries in the relegation scrap. Wolves take on Everton and Watford tackle Newcastle, both are tough games to call.
