Shadow minister Russell- Nurses strike in Israel over Moyle resigns BY ADAM MOSES

Lloyd Russell-Moyle

PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA

BY ROBERT LEVY Shadow Minister for Natural Environment and Air Quality Lloyd Russell-Moyle has resigned days after apologising for labelling Zionism “dangerous nationalist idea” in historic social media posts. Offensive posts dated back to 2009

referring to Jewish claims to the land of Israel. Comments were made on Facebook group Woodcraft Folk, in which Russell-Moyle had a role. A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said it was “deeply disappointing” that Keir Starmer had appointed Russell-Moyle to his Shadow Cabinet, given his record. CAA added that Russell-Moyle must still face disciplinary proceedings over his conduct on anti-Semitism. Russell-Moyle has a terrible record having defended Melanie Melvin who tweeted that a Syrian gas attack had been filmed by the BBC at Pinewood on orders of Theresa May and the Israeli lobby. The controversial MP also backed Rebecca Massey that Israel has the Tory and Labour parties under control, has supported Ken Livingstone and shared a leaked dossier blaming Labour’s antisemitism crisis on anti-Corbyn factions within the party. Russell-Moyle, in his apology, reportedly deleted posts and recognised why they were offensive. He noted he is committed to supporting Starmer to rid the party of anti-Semitism. Labour received the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s draft report into allegations of anti-Semitism last week.

Israel’s nurses general strike is over after a temporary deal with the Finance Ministry was agreed late on Monday. The National Association of Nurses took strike action over staff shortages in the morning when last-ditch talks with the ministry could not find a resolution. Health and finance ministries have agreed to recruit 2,000 nurses, hundreds of doctors and security guards on a temporary basis. The association and ministry are also agreeing a plan moving forward. Authorities will address numerous issues including nursing budgets, protection of medical staff and incentives for nurses in southern Israel. The coronavirus pandemic has put the healthcare system under intense pressure, a situation exasperated by specialist wards reopening as the country battles a second wave. The crisis has seen a shortage of 1,500 nurses in hospitals, health maintenance organisations (HMO) clinics and other facilities with hundreds of staff in quarantine. When talks failed nurses chair Ilana Cohen was aggrieved only temporarily staff was promised. “It’s like using a band-aid and it’s a shame,” she reportedly said. “It shows that they have not internalised anything.” “The nurses represent the entire healthcare system,” added Dr. Ze’ev Feldman, chairman of the Doctors Association. “We have been asking for more nursing staff to prepare for the winter, during which we fear we will see

coronavirus among other seasonal illnesses. We need new personnel now so that we could train them in advance.” All non-urgent surgeries were postponed across the country when the dispute started but coronavirus and oncology wards were unaffected by the strike. Israel’s largest hospital, Sheba Medical Center and Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital were affected. The strike hit surgical wards and other departments also experienced issues. The nurses association had called for more nursing staff before the pandemic. “The health system was a hot topic before the elections, but since then, elected officials have ignored medical teams’ pleas,” Cohen noted. “You think I want to strike in the middle of a pandemic? The government has abandoned nurses and patients.” When negotiations failed last week, nurses acted out of “national responsibility” to avoid a “doomsday scenario” for the public health system and to safeguard lives. “Until there is a strike, nothing will change,” Cohen said. As of Monday, there were 19,883 people battling the disease, 260 patients are in serious condition including 78 on ventilators. National fatalities had reached 422. Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Tel Aviv and Ashdod have the most cases. Nurses held a strike 12 months ago over working conditions. A two-day dispute affected hospitals and clinics across the country.

Tributes to civil rights icon Lewis BY DAVID SAFFER

Cardinal Vincent Nichols

Catholic leader expresses appreciation The Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, has thanked Barnet Councillor Brian Gordon for his involvement in the campaign to end the lockdown on places of worship including synagogues due to the coronavirus pandemic. Places of worship reopened for congregational prayer on July 4, subject to social distancing and other safeguards. Cllr Gordon was among those within the Jewish community to offer support to the Archbishop after he voiced concern that places of worship were closed last month despite retail and recreational outlets being eased from lockdown. The Archbishop expressed fears that religious needs throughout the country were being marginalised. In media interviews, he stressed the critical nature of communal worship to the country’s many faiths and to the spiritual and moral welfare of the nation.

Writing to Cllr Gordon, Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations executive member, last week, the Archbishop said his letter was “great encouragement” to bring an end to the closure of churches and places of worship. “As you know, good progress has been made since you wrote to me,” His Eminence noted. “Indeed, many possibilities are now available and I know that while the Jewish community has its own particular challenges it is good that we are moving together and in a concerted effort on these important matters”. Cllr Gordon said this was an illustration how inter-faith co-operation on specific issues yield positive results. “The way things were going, were it not for the coordinated campaigning that took place, the reopening of places of worship could well have been delayed even further,” he explained.

Chabad-Lubavitch and World Jewish Congress have led tributes to congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis following his death. Leaders of the organisations recalled that Lewis was a lifelong supporter of Israel, fought anti-Semitism and was inspired by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson. “At a time when some nefarious forces are stoking division between the Black and Jewish communities, we should look to the model (he) set for us and remember that Black-Jewish unity is the best way to achieve justice for both peoples,” said WLC president Ronald S. Lauder. Lubavitch honoured Lewis at a gala dinner in 2009. “Not everyone agreed with Congressman Lewis all the time, but everyone respected him, and it went both ways, he respected those with whom he disagreed as well,” recalled Rabbi Levi Shemtov, American Friends of Lubavitch, Washington. Rabbi Shemtov added, “He was a true mensch and a great man. He will be sorely missed.” Born to black sharecroppers in Alabama, 1940, Lewis, aged, 18, joined Dr Martin Luther Kings’ civil rights movement. A lifelong believer in nonviolent protest, Lewis was arrested over 40 times. Seriously injured during the Freedom Rides in 1961 and a peaceful march in Selma, Lewis pressed for equality and was unanimously elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986. A Republican, Lewis took inspiration from the Rebbe. In 1994, with rival congressman Newt Gingrich, he sponsored legislation for a posthumous award of a Congressional gold medal to the Rebbe. “He not only backed that historic effort, he was one of the people who actively explained to others the merits of awarding this to the Rebbe,” recalled Shemtov. Lewis spoke at the landmark ceremony at the White House a few months after the Rebbe’s death. President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and Chabad-Lubavich leaders attended. Lewis said there was “nothing at all” he and Gingrich agreed on, but the Rebbe’s accolade was a first for spiritual leadership. “It brought Democrats and Republicans, liberals, conservatives, Northerners and Southerners, blacks, whites and Hispanic, it brought us all together,” Lewis said. “We may no longer see the Rebbe with our eyes, but his spirit lives in our hearts, in our souls and in our deeds,” he added. “The Rebbe, like my mentor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., worked every day of his life, to be what Dr. King used to call ‘the beloved community,’ an all inclusive community, a community at peace with itself,

a country and a world in which people were not judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. The Rebbe judged people by the content of their character and he worked every day to make this world a better world.” Lewis added, “I am sorry to say that I never got to meet the Rebbe. I know I would have liked him. I know Dr. King would have liked him.” On the 50th anniversary of the Selma march, Lewis invited Shemtov to discuss the Rebbe’s views on freedom. Lewis recalled King’s encouragement of love as the only way forward, noted Shemtov. “Lewis stared down the worst of humanity using the best of humanity,” added Shemtov. “Namely, defeating weaponry and bigotry with the unbreakable strength of the human spirit.” “Working together, we can accomplish great things,” Lewis said at a 1995 Lubavitch event honouring the Rebbe. “Together we can build a better world, a more united world, a more peaceful world. It is a world the Rebbe devoted his life to create. We must carry on his work. We all must keep our eyes on the prize.” Lauder described Lewis as a “titan of American history” and icon of the civil rights movement. “Lewis fought justice and equality until the day he died,” added Lauder. “He led by example, from his commitment to nonviolent protest to his unflinching belief in our nation’s capacity to become a more perfect union. Through it all, he understood the importance of building  bridges of empathy between communities.” Lewis noted Lewis was a lifelong ally of the Jewish people, State of Israel and voice against anti-Semitism.

Fuld killer gets life Labour anti-Semitism

Ari Fuld z”l

BY SIMCHA ABIR Palestinian terrorist Khalil Jabarin has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Ari Fuld in the West Bank at an Israeli military court on Tuesday. The 45-year-old American-Israeli was stabbed to death in a horrific attack by Jabarin, then 16, outside a Gush Etzion shopping centre in September 2018. Fuld was critically injured whilst attempting to prevent others fatalities. The father of four was pronounced dead at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Jabarin was shot by a member of the public before being treated at Shaare Zedek. Thousands attended Fuld’s funeral at Kfar Etzion in the West Bank. Jabarin was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and three counts of attempted manslaughter last January.

Fuld’s widow, Miriam, said she hoped Jabarin “rots in jail,” when she heard the sentence. “It is the only fair sentence for such a despicable act,” she reportedly said. “I felt the judges really listened to us, that they have learnt to really (know) what kind of man Ari was.” Fuld’s brother, Eitan, said the death sentence would be more just. “The bare minimum is to deprive him of sunlight,” he noted. “That man has ruined my family and for that he deserves to stay locked up for the rest of his life.” Fuld’s widow, Miriam gave a heartfelt eulogy at his funeral. Rabbi Yonah Fuld told mourners his son, who fought in the Second Lebanon War in the Paratroopers Brigade, understood why he fought for the land of Israel. Oded Ravivi, head of Efrat Council, said Fuld spent his life combining Torah with self-defence. Fuld was a right-wing activist known for posting political viewpoints on his Facebook page “Ari Fuld Israel Defense Page”. An critic of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Fuld had hundreds of followers. Netanyahu paid respect to the Fuld family before the funeral, Education Minister at the time Naftali Bennett described him as an “Israeli hero”. US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said Fuld was an “American patriot”.

issues in councils BY LEAH WAXLER

Labour may lose control of Brighton and Hove City Council over anti-Semitism incidents. This follows on from Labour-led Crawley Borough Council losing control over anti-Semitism. Worcester Council, meantime, has adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism following an incident. At Brighton and Hove this week, CAA reported that three Labour councillors face allegations. Cllr Kate Knight had resigned, Cllr Anne Pissaridou was suspended, Cllr Nichole Brennan faced no sanctions. Knight’s resignation put Labour level with the Greens, Labour offered to share power. “I abhor anti-Semitism which, along with all other forms of racism, is a scourge that blights our society and every political party,” she reportedly said. “I am not anti-Semitic and I regret if anything I posted caused distress, as this was not my intention.” Knight added, “I do not want this matter to distract from the vital work that the Council needs to do, as we all continue to come to terms with the effects and future consequences of COVID-19. So, after deep reflection and with much regret, I have resigned my membership of the Labour Party with immediate effect.” Pissaridou has stepped down as chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee. She noted, “I am deeply sorry for my actions and any distress I have caused to the Jewish community. This happened several years ago, before I was a councillor, and the posts I shared do not reflect my views. I do not seek to excuse my mistake.” Pissaridou added, “I deeply regret not properly reading information before sharing such hurtful links. I am aware of the complaint that has been made to the Labour Party and will fully co-operate with any investigation.” Brennan has apologised and resigned from her role as deputy housing chairwoman pending an investigation after pictures emerged showing her holding a sign calling Israel a “racist, apartheid state”. Brennan stated she would “not bow down to white supremacy”. Her resignation puts the Greens as the largest party. They are deciding whether to accept a power-sharing deal and will make an announcement. Brighton and Hove are the second local authority to change control due to anti-Semitism in recent weeks. Labour councillor Karen Sudan is sitting as an independent and will defend herself against anti-Semitism accusations, leaving Crawley with no control. Elsewhere, a Worcester councillor reportedly had a mezuzah ripped from her front door and posted through her letterbox with a swastika inscribed on it, last week. Conservative Cllr Louise Griffiths tabled a motion at Worcester Council to adopt the IHRA standard. The Council has

unanimously advocated it. Griffiths said, “Anti-Semitism was not something I experienced on a regular basis, but it has seemingly become part of my daily life in recent years. “For me, having the council sign up to this definition of anti-Semitism is a no-brainer.” She added that it would not have a negative effect on the way the council does business but did send a signal to the Jewish community that elected representatives care about them and won’t allow anti-Semitism to go unchallenged. “We will put robust systems in place to ensure councillors and council employees are educated on anti-Semitic tropes and the dangers of using them,” Griffiths noted. She lamented, “There is a very small Jewish community here, but one which experiences antisemitism on a regular basis.” Labour councillor Joy Squires backed the adoption of the IHRA definition. “For far too long the racism that blames Jewish people, wherever they live, for all the ills in the world has been allowed to take root and flourish across the political spectrum and across society at large,” she reportedly said. “I am horrified at the anti-Semitism expressed by members of my own political party in recent years and ashamed that my party did not act quickly enough to stamp it out.”

Police investigate swastika hate crime Greater Manchester Police is reportedly investigating a hate crime after an officer affixed a swastika to a colleague’s belongings. Assistant Chief Constable Mabs Hussain is “appalled” an employee found this behaviour acceptable. He noted, “A colleague has been subjected to a hate crime and there is no place for behaviour like this in GMP or policing nationally, and it’s being treated incredibly seriously. “It is absolutely unacceptable that an officer has been faced with such an atrocity during their shift and we’re urging any officers or staff with any information to report it.” The officer is being supported, Hussain added, and is being updated on the investigation.

Labour unreservedly apologised and are determined to root out anti-Semitism in the party. “Before the broadcast of the programme, the Labour Party issued a press release that contained

defamatory and false allegations about these whistleblowers,” the party reportedly said. “We acknowledge the many years of dedicated and committed service that the whistleblowers have given to the Labour Party as members and as staff. We appreciate their valuable contribution at all levels of the party. “We unreservedly withdraw all allegations of bad faith, malice and lying. We would like to apologise

unreservedly for the distress, embarrassment and hurt caused by their publication. We have agreed to pay them damages.” The BBC has welcomed the party’s “long-overdue” apology. Jewish Labour MPs, including Margaret Hodge and former MP Ruth Smeeth, have aslo welcomed the settlement. The Jewish Labour Movement said Panorama had shone a light on the party’s failure to act against anti-Jewish racism.

Rivlin slams coalition BY DAVID SAFFER President Reuven Rivlin has slammed factions of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s unity government contemplating new elections during the battle against the coronavirus pandemic. Reuven’s comments came hours after some Likud and ultra-orthodox MKs lambasted Benny Gantz’s Blue & White party for backing a proposal to ban gay conversion therapy in a preliminary vote in the Knesset last night. Charedi parties are incensed by the vote result. “Wake up! Stop the talk about early elections,” Rivlin said in a statement. Rivlin described the prospect of elections, the last was in May, as “terrible”.

“The State of Israel is not a rag doll for you to drag around behind you, while you are constantly fighting,” he said. “Our citizens, all of us, need you focused and working to resolve the unprecedented crisis in which Israel, and all of humanity, have found themselves in.” Netanyahu reportedly contacted United Torah Judaism chair and Housing Minister Yaakov Litzman after the vote vowing to do “everything” to ensure the bill does not pass further readings. Ultra-orthodox and liberal politicians clashed in the Knesset after MKs voted 4236 in favour of legislation. Defence Minister Gantz received most criticism. United Torah Judaism MK Moshe Gafni reportedly announced that his party would not cooperate with Blue & White. UTJ called

on ultra-Orthodox MKs to back their move. Likud’s Dudi Amsalem said Blue & White had harmed the coalition which could result in elections. Proposed legislation bans psychologists from using therapy. Repeat offenders would be fined and sentenced to jail. Blue & White and Labour supported the bill before the vote. “Conversion therapy was born in sin and its place is outside of the law and the public norm,” he reportedly tweeted. “We will make sure that everyone, from every background and sexual orientation in Israel, has free choice and security over their identity.” Meretz leader Nitzan Horowitz proposed the law and hailed the vote as “amazing news” for Israel’s public. “Today, a historic change is beginning in

Israel,” said Horowitz. “I thank the MKs who voted in support of freedom and equality and stop the horror of conversion therapy.” The Knesset spat follows reported news that Netanyahu will not back a proposed budget next month, which would also herald elections.

WJC marks Buenos Aires terror attack BY SIMCHA ABIR The Latin American Jewish Congress has marked the 26th anniversary of a deadly bombing of the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina building in Buenos Aires. Eighty-five people died and hundreds were wounded in a suspected Hezbollah terror attack. The bombing was the deadliest terrorist attack on Argentinian soil and against a Jewish community outside of Israel. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder in a video message paid tribute to the victims. “We know from history that when hatred targets Jews, the bombs do not distinguish the religion of the victims and the entire humankind suffers and without memory and without justice, these wounds remain open,” he said. “Our commitment to the families of victims and survivors is the same. We’ll be tempted to ask, ‘who cares about the AMIA attack?’ The answer is simple. We all care.” The virtual commemoration is the culmination of a series of events. Despite arrest warrants and calls for justice, the terrorists behind it have still to be brought to trial. “Each year, the LAJC demands justice for the victims of AMIA. This year will not be an exception,” said Claudio Epelman, LAJC executive director.

The names of the victims of the bombing

Fernando Lottenberg, Israeli Confederation of Brazil, said the bombing on his community marked “the end of innocence.” Samy Canias, President of the Central Israelite Committee of Uruguay, added that “anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism” knew no borders. “This happened in Argentina, but it could also have happened in Uruguay, Colombia, and Brazil,” she said. Canias added that the legacy of the attack impacted his community and others in the region. LAJC’s tribute included virtual conferences featuring world experts on terrorism

Campaign Against Antisemitism has slammed a ‘slap-on-the-wrist’ sentence handed out at Stratford Youth Court to teenage brothers convicted of racially aggravated common assault against a Rabbi in Stamford Hill last year. CAA slated the “pitiful sentence” as it made a mockery of British justice. The brothers, aged 15 and 16 cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to the horror incident that included a torrent of anti-Semitic abuse on a Friday night. Both received a 12-month Youth Rehabilitation Order, 30-day electronically-monitored curfew, victim surcharge of £21 and ordered to attend a 10-day diversity awareness course. The assailants reportedly shouted “**** Jews” and “dirty Jew” during the November 29 attack as the 54-year-old rabbi, visiting from Israel for a wedding, walked along Amhurst Park. The attackers ran off laughing. The incident was reported to police and Stamford Hill Shomrim. The rabbi was shaken after the attack and returned to Israel following Shabbat. The suspects were identified after a media appeal and charged last December. Both were convicted last month at Stratford Magistrates’ Court following a two-day hearing. CAA panned the sentence as it demonstrated anti-Semitic hate crime is not taken

and cyberterrorism, and testimonies by survivors and relatives of victims. WJC and LAJC released a commemorative anthology entitled “Justice You Shall Pursue!” last year. The book features reflections for justice by world leaders and prominent individuals. Contributors included Lauder, President of Argentina Mauricio Macri, U.S. President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Recent progress to the terror incident includes the Argentine government

citing Hezbollah a terrorist organisation and freezing financial assets. The decision was welcomed by Lauder. However past decades have brought frustration. In September 2004, the Attorney General’s Office appointed Attorney General Alberto Nisman and District Attorney Marcelo Martínez Burgo to investigate the attack. Nisman published a 700-page report accusing the Iranian regime of masterminding the attack in 2006. The report called for the arrest of Iranian President Ali Akbar Rafsanjani, Hezbollah Chief of Staff Imad Mughniyeh, Iranian cabinet officials and high-ranking diplomats. International agencies, including Interpol, issued arrest warrants. Nisman was found dead in his apartment in 2015, the cause of death is not determined. Last year, individuals accused of obstructing the investigation were acquitted in a criminal court. They included Delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas President Rubén Beraja and former President Carlos Menem. seriously. “This was an appalling violent attack on an innocent scholar visiting London, which left him not only with physical injuries but an impression of the UK that sadly our country is beginning to deserve,” commented Stephen Silverman, CAA Director of Investigations and Enforcement. “This failure of the British justice system shows once again that on the rare occasions when anti-Semites are prosecuted, they face dismally lenient sentences that would not deter anyone.” He added, “This pitiful sentence is a scandal and makes a mockery of justice. It is a betrayal of British Jews, sending the message that violent assaults motivated by anti-Jewish hatred are barely punished, and signals to victims of anti-Semitism that their attackers will not face justice. No wonder only a third of British Jews believe that the courts do enough to protect them, when sentences like this demonstrate that Jews do not receive justice in modern Britain. Silverman called on CPS to seek tougher sentences if it takes anti-Semitic crime seriously. Detective Constable Matthew Cooksey of the Metropolitan Police, said hate crime would not be tolerated. Police took such offences “extremely seriously”. The Crown Prosecution Service applied for a longer sentence as the attack was racially motivated.

Chevron Corporation has acquired Noble Energy. The $5 billion deal includes Noble’s stake in Israeli offshore natural gas fields. This is the first time a major oil company has entered the Israeli energy market. Chevron becomes the operator of the Leviathan and Tamar gas fields in the Mediterranean. They will also acquire Noble’s stake in Cyprus’s Aphrodite gas field. Israel’s Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said the deal was a “tremendous expression of confidence in the Israeli energy market”. US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette tweeted, “We look forward to what American ingenuity can do to boost energy development and security in the region.”

Chevron CEO Mike Wirth reportedly said the company was mindful of “political differences and tensions” between Israel and its neighbours where Chevron does business. Chevron was “apolitical” and a “commercial actor”. The Israeli government approved an agreement with European countries for construction of a pipeline to supply Europe with natural gas from eastern Mediterranean earlier this week. Steinitz said the deal would bring tens of billions of dollars to Israel and benefit the state for years. The pipeline is reportedly expected to be completed by 2025. A land and sea survey will determine the route of the 1,900km pipeline.

‘Grand Corona Law’ passed BY DAVID SAFFER Israel’s unity government can impose emergency anti-coronavirus measures without a full Knesset vote. MKs backed the ‘Grand Corona Law’ by 48-35 votes last night as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government strive to quell the spike in Covid-19 cases. MKs are able to analyse decisions after 24 hours under new legislation. Non-urgent measures will be instigated after a Knesset debate. The decision is controversial with reported accusations by disgruntled MKs of potential ‘dictatorial’ decisions and a lack of transparency. Netanyahu, meantime, has appointed former Health Ministry director Ronni Gamzu as the new ‘coronavirus czar’ after Prof. Gabriel Barbash quit the post just a day into officially taking it on. “I immediately gave an affirmative response,” Gamzu reportedly said as it was a “national” responsibility. Netanyahu’s office ratified the appointment this morning. Barbash, in a statement, said there was no agreement as to the scope of authority in the role. Health officials announced today that daily cases passed 2,000 for a consecutive day in a row. There have been 430 fatalities, 259 patients are in serious condition and 82 patients on ventilators (at the time of going to press). The country’s major hotspots are Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Beitar-Illit and Tel Aviv. During a week of fast flowing decisions Israel’s Health Ministry cut the quarantine period for coronavirus patients. Patients are now deemed recovered after three days without symptoms and 10 days following a positive test or symptoms. Should a patient not remember when symptoms started, they are deemed fit 10 days after testing positive. Asymptomatic patients are deemed fit 10 days after initial diagnosis. The announcement follows new World Health Organisation recommendations. An IDF report, meantime, has warned there could be dozens of serious cases and hundreds of deaths next month if the current infection rate continues. A second wave has developed at a more moderate pace, especially among over 60s, but there had been a spread to hundreds of Israeli towns and communities. The report called for better tracing. “Every one of us is a potential carrier of the pathogen,” noted the report. “Although adhering to regulations infringes on the freedom of movement and even the freedom of occupation, this is what will permit us to fully reopen the economy.” Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Gabi Ashkenazi wants the IDF to take a lead in the battle against the pandemic. “This virus will not leave us for an entire

year, therefore, there needs to be a change in management,” Ashkenazi reportedly said and appealed to Netanyahu to put his “ego aside”. “We need to shift responsibility to the defence establishment,” Ashkenazi added. Netanyahu’s office made no comment. In related news, a health expert has called for a nationwide lockdown to slow the spread of cases and avoid a health disaster. “Mathematically, we are only three weeks away from a total collapse,” Prof. Dov Schwartz, former chief scientist at Israel Atomic Energy Commission, reportedly said, noting that manpower, not ventilator machines, was a major issue. “A ward with 20 ventilated coronavirus patients requires 20 doctors and 90 nurses. We thought that towards the winter we will be able to train additional staff, which we recommended the government adds, but now it seems to not be possible.” Prof. Schwartz added, “Lockdown is the right mathematical option, it has been proven as an effective method to minimise the number of those contracting the virus.” The esteemed scientist noted that only essential industries must operate. “If there is no proof the place is harmless, it should not be open, therefore no pools, no restaurants, no synagogues and no gyms,” he said. Earlier this week, the Knesset committee ruled that Israel’s restaurants could remain open under restrictions despite moves to only allow takeaway and delivery services. MK Yifat Shasha-Biton and Health Minster Yuli Edelstein failed to agree on the issue. Meantime, the committee voted to

extend Shin Bet security agency’s contact tracing of patients despite the Health Ministry launching a more discreet app. Shin Bet has tracked over 6,000 confirmed cases. Magen 2, due to be launched next week, will enable Israelis to voluntarily provide the ministry data if they contract coronavirus. Initial version concerns over data breaches have been rectified. National Security Council Director Meir Ben-Shabbat called on Israelis to adopt the app. Discussions, meanwhile, are continuing on whether to keep beaches and public swimming pools open on weekends, ignoring a government order.

“Lockdown is the right mathematical option, it has been proven as an effective method to minimise the number of those contracting the virus.” Heated debate has also taken place between Likud MKs over compensation for businesses hit by the pandemic. Israel is to keep summer schools open but will assess the situation on a weekly basis. There was anger though in a number of quarters when Hebrew Gymnasium High School in Jerusalem, a hotspot two months ago, held an end of the school year

prom for 100 students on Sunday, ignoring strict guidelines. The Jerusalem Municipality said the event took place without its knowledge in a statement. The school defended its decision. “Unlike years prior, it was not a ball nor a party, far from it,” the school noted in statement. “Due to health regulations, students in twelfth grade celebrated their graduation without their parents, any other family member or friends.” The school added students arrived at different intervals, wore masks and signed a declaration of health at the entrance. After the presentation of graduation certificates, students met in an open space and dispersed. Meanwhile, Netanyahu and his inner cabinet of Israel Katz, Amir Peretz and Benny Gantz approved additional state benefits for pensioners, the disabled, recipients of income support and new immigrants. Around 800,000 people are eligible for the payment. Some 530 Israeli doctors however have signed a petition condoning the government’s handling of the pandemic. Medics claim the government ignored advice and Health Ministry stopped alternative discussions. The petition noted that an escalation in deaths would result in economic disaster. Resources should focus on elderly and high-risk groups. Pressure continues to intensify on Israel’s leader with protests against him on the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and alleged corruption charges. Thousands rallied outside his residence in Jerusalem on Tuesday night. Police reported over 30 arrests after clashes. “A handful of protesters was there to disrupt the order, calling officers names and throwing a smoke grenade at them,” a police statement noted. “Some of them also came with drums and bullhorns, disturbing the peace of residents in the area. We removed them after they refused to clear the traffic lane despite several requests.” The event was among a series of demonstrations across the country. Some rallies turned violent with police clashing with protesters and arresting dozens. Thousands gathered at Charles Clore Park in Tel Aviv and in front of Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem displaying signs reading “Out of touch. We’re fed up” on Saturday night. Police said 13 protesters were arrested at Habima Square in Tel Aviv and 15 demonstrators were detained at Paris Square in Jerusalem. During Saturday’s protests, police used water cannons to disperse a crowd of around 1,500 people around Netanyahu’s residence, in Tel Aviv, police used tear gas to stop demonstrators.

Twitter reviews ‘Star of David’ policy Campaign Against Antisemitism has welcomed Twitter reviewing its policy of locking accounts displaying the Star of David. A number of Twitter users had contacted CAA reporting accounts being locked after the social media platform deemed the symbol “hateful imagery”. Twitter now claims the policy was directed at ‘yellow stars’ only. “While the majority of cases were correctly actioned, some accounts highlighted recently were mistakes and have now been restored,” they noted in a statement. CAA, however, insist questions remain whether it was a genuine policy.

“Only one of the accounts locked featured a yellow star, and it very clearly did so as a means of reclaiming the yellow stars used by the Nazis,” noted CAA Director of Investigations and Enforcement, Stephen Silverman. “This is precisely the kind of inept response to anti-Semitism that we have come to expect from Twitter, which just last week tried to convince us that the viral antisemitic #JewishPrivilege hashtag was legitimate.” Silverman added CAA will help Twitter but are mostly ignored when approached. He continued, “It seems that Twitter prefers to go after Jewish users who proudly display their identity but not after anti-Semitic users who unabashedly promote anti-Jewish vitriol.” CAA called on Twitter to immediately restore accounts, apologise to owners and take robust action against anti-Semites when the Star of David issue came to light.

Uyghur Muslims in China

BY DAVID SAFFER The Board of Deputies has called on the Chinese Government to release the Uyghur people and other minorities from ethnic and religious oppression. The Board’s intervention came after Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming denied human rights accusations against his country including forced sterilisation on BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday. UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab accused China of “gross” human rights abuses against its Uyghur population and has not ruled out sanctions. LBC radio presenter Maajid Nawaz ended a silent hunger strike about treatment of Uyghurs in the China’s Xinjiang Province after 100,000 backed a petition for the UK government to put sanctions on China. The landmark figure means it has to be debated in parliament. Shown authenticated drone footage of shaven blind-folded people kneeling then being led to trains, Liu Xiaomong evaded Marr’s questioning about what was occurring. “Sometimes people are transferred to prisons,” he eventually said. Liu Xiaomong denied a forced sterilisation programme was occurring to women. “The government policy is opposed to this type of practice but I could not rule out single cases,” he said. “We treat every ethnic group in China as equal,” he added. Pressed by Marr that images of blind folded people being led to trains to re-education camps was reminiscent of the Nazi regime of the 1930s and 1940s, Liu Xiaomong said there were “no such concentration camps in Xinjiang”. The Board has highlighted treatment of the Uyghur people and religious minorities in China at events with the World

Uyghur Congress and Muslim partners. Board President Marie van der Zyl, in a letter to the Chinese emissary, said nobody watching Marr’s show could fail to notice similarities between what is alleged to be happening in China and Nazi Germany 75 years ago with people being forcibly loaded on to trains, beards of religious men being trimmed, women being sterilised and the grim spectre of concentration camps. “Germany has rightly paid a heavy price for its persecution of the Jewish people,” she noted. Ms van der Zyl said China risked squandering its achievements and sabotaging its legacy if it failed to learn the lessons of history. “The World will neither forgive nor forget a genocide against the Uyghur people,” she said. “Mr Ambassador, we urge China today to release the Uyghur people and other minorities from all ethnic and religious oppression, throw open the doors of the camps to a full and impartial international investigation, take action against the perpetrators of any human rights abuses and ensure justice for the victims and their families. This must begin immediately. “The world is watching. The hand of history is poised. For its future, China has a choice between great glory and eternal shame. Let it choose the former.” As pressure intensifies on China, Rabbi Liss, Chair of the Rabbinic Council of the United Synagogue, called for action, quoting from a Mishna from Pirkei Avot. “Rabbi Tarfon teaches us that while it may not be our responsibility to complete the work, we are not free to desist from it either,” he said. “Feeling helpless cannot be an excuse for inaction. Learn more about the plight of the Uyghurs. Tell your friends and family. Speak out.”

DIY or use an adviser ? The writer is the Owner and Managing Director of Alpha Wealth Management Ltd – a boutique independent financial advisory practice. As a Chartered Financial Planner and drawing on over twenty years’ experience in financial services, Marc helps private clients, businesses, charities, and trusts optimize their finances. Prior to acting as a financial adviser, Marc was a Director at several global investment banks, providing investment advice to Europe’s leading institutional investment and pension fund managers.

BY MARC OVITS In November 2014, Vanguard Asset Management published a document called Adviser Alpha. Following extensive research their key conclusion was that investors who invest through an adviser tend to generate 3% p.a. better (i.e. alpha) returns over the long term to those that invest by themselves. Last week we started to explore some of the key reasons for this conclusion, including behavioural coaching (which accounts for 1-2% p.a. better returns over the long term) and over-confidence bias. This week we will explore some of the other reasons investors that invest through advisers tend to generate better returns.

SUITABLE ASSET ALLOCATION

It is widely accepted that strategic asset allocation – i.e. the setting of long-term allocations between equities, bonds, cash and other asset classes, and the subsequent adherence to these weightings – is the most important driver of long-term performance and volatility. To set the right asset allocation, one needs to consider one’s goals, one’s financial situation, risk tolerance, contribution and spending levels, and time horizon.

33 Bell Lane, London NW4 2BP Tel: 020 8203 6920 Email: info@alphawm.co.uk www.alphawm.co.uk

REBALANCING

Having taken the time to set the appropriate asset allocation, its important your portfolio is regularly rebalanced back to its original series of asset class weightings. Because different assets perform

differently, the initial weighting will drift over time causing the portfolio to potentially become riskier. For many investors rebalancing in this way seems counter-intuitive: after all, it means taking money out of what is performing well and allocating it to assets that are not performing so well. Left to their own devices, most investors will not do this, Regularly rebalancing can help to correct portfolio drift. Consider that Vanguard looked at the performance and volatility of a medium risk portfolio of 60% equities, 40% bonds that drifted. They found that a very similar level of volatility could be achieved through a regularly rebalanced portfolio made up of 70% equities and 30% bonds. However, this latter portfolio delivered a return that was 0.43% p.a. higher than the drifting 60/40 portfolio. So the value of rebalancing can be assessed at 0.43% p.a..

COST-EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION

Cost-effective implementation is critical. Every pound paid in charges is a pound off one’s potential returns. Moreover, just like returns, costs compound over time. So, choosing a cost-effective fund on day one could really reap rewards over the long-term.

TAX ALLOWANCES

The allocation of assets between taxable and tax-advantaged accounts is important. The benefits of investing tax-efficiently will compound over time. Optimal portfolio construction from a tax

Volume 2

perspective might involve holding tax-efficient broad-market equity investments in taxable accounts, while broad-market bonds are held in tax-advantaged accounts such as ISAs and pensions. For a higher-rate taxpayer within the capital gains tax allowance, Vanguard’s research suggests that optimally structuring a portfolio can create 0.23% p.a. better returns.

SPENDING STRATEGY

The number of retirees is rising rapidly; many investors have both taxable and non-taxable investments. Advisers can add significant value by ensuring that post-retirement spending is undertaken as tax-efficiently as possible. The order in which one makes those withdrawals will have a big impact on the rate of tax one pays. This, in turn, affects the long-term returns that the portfolio will generate. For example, someone with a £250,000 portfolio who is within the capital gains allowance and only has 20% of the portfolio in taxable accounts could still generate savings of 0.29% per annum by spending in a tax-efficient way. Taken together, Vanguard’s extensive research showed advisers can be expected to add 3% p.a. returns to a client’s investments relative to them doing things themselves. A competent adviser will look at all aspects of a person’s investments ensuring their portfolio and investment approach is both suitable and optimal for them be it from a risk, tax or return perspective.

Social worker strike settled

Bibi trial resumes in January

Israel’s Finance Ministry and Social Workers Union reached a deal on employment conditions on Wednesday. The union accepted a government offer after a 17-day strike. Cabinet approval to the pay reforms could take place on Sunday. Union chair Inbal Hermoni, in an official statement to workers, noted, “We won!” Thousands of social workers blocked Tel Aviv streets this week. Histadrut Labour Federation leader Arnon Bar-David warned that more workers would join the strike to show solidarity as

BY SIMCHA ABIR

they would not “settle for crumbs” as in previous disputes. “This new agreement helps safeguard the rights of a dedicated working community that works day and night to reach out to all people in need,” said Bar-David. Thousands of citizens were unable to access welfare services during the strike. “There was no one to help the woman suffering from domestic violence,” said Hermoni. “There’s no one to help at-risk youth, elders in isolation or write custody agreements.” Finance Minister Israel Katz welcomed a “historic” deal.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial resumes January 2021. Judges at a procedural hearing ruled that Netanyahu, who was not in court, must attend to hear witnesses and cross-examination. Netanyahu’s legal team called for a longer deferral period. “It will be hard for me to face a masked witness and see if he’s telling the truth,” said lawyer Yossi Segev. He added, “I came here today when I am not ready. I suggest we meet here again in six months, after the coronavirus, when we will be smarter.” There is ongoing concern how Netanyahu’s

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

defence team will be paid. The State Comptroller Committee refused Netanyahu’s request to pay lawyers with NIS 10 million in donations. A number of lawyers have quit Netanyahu’s legal team over unpaid fees. Segev told judges he had been retained for the day’s session. Judge Rivka Friedman-Feldman hopes Netanyahu will find a permanent lawyer. This is the first time in Israel’s history a sitting prime minister faces a trial. Former Prime Minister Olmert resigned before being indicted by the Attorney General. Found guilty, he served two-thirds of a 27-month prison sentence. Netanyahu’s lawyers can file motions for the prosecution to disclose more evidence before January. The prosecution has until November 1 to respond.

MARCHING ON TOGETHER Dear Editor, The history of the Leeds Jewish community and Leeds United is well known. Leeds won the FA Cup in 1972, and the old first division in 1973/4 under the stewardship of Manny Cussins, and again the first division in 1991/2 with Leslie Silver at the helm. Strong Jewish leadership is also key in this week’s parsha, Devarim. Moses who begins his final monologue, five weeks before his passing, starts to prepare the Jewish people to enter the Land of Israel. Moses is devastated that he can’t enter the Land, but he puts all his own disappointment to one side, and focuses solely on the needs of the Jewish people. He admonishes them for their misdeeds in order that they repent and be ready to begin the next stage of their journey under the leadership of Joshua. Moses also encourages and reminds Joshua not to fear the nations in the Land, exclaiming, “it is the L-rd, your G‑d, who is fighting for you.” On the theme of leadership, not that we can really compare Moses with the Leeds Manager, but in his own way, Marcelo Bielsa is a an inspiration to many. He has unified the city and instilled values of being a mensch in players and fans alike. He famously made the players pick up litter for two hours, thereby highlighting how much effort fans put into to see them play. He also never blames his players or the referees after poor performances, instead he takes the blame. He will always stop for a ‘selfie’ and spend time with fans. He lives in a modest one bed flat in Wetherby, shops in Morrisons and walks around in his Leeds training top despite his £6m-per-year salary. As far as football managers go, he’s one of a kind. Referring back to the parsha, another example of strong leadership is when Moses recounts how 39 years ago he was unable to be the sole judge for the entire nation. Moses agreed to his then father-in-law, Yitro’s advice on setting up a hierarchical judicial system thereby delegating his responsibilities. Moses was humble enough to listen and take advice. If only the Leeds hierarchy under Peter Risdale (who took over shortly after Leslie Silver) had the sense to take prudent advice, then I’m sure they wouldn’t have lead the club into financial ruin. I’m certain it wouldn’t have happened under the previous aforementioned chairman. After 16 painful years in exile, Leeds United are back in the promised land. During that time, they suffered heartbreaking playoff final defeats to Watford and Doncaster Rovers and semi final defeats to Millwall and last year to Derby County. After crashing out last year in the playoffs, Leeds fans were yet again inconsolable. The misery was compounded with the very real possibility that ‘El Loco’, Marcelo Bielsa, their best manager in years, would disappear off into the horizon. The loyalty and hope of Leeds fans is best encapsulated in their anthem “Marching on Together’’, : “We’ve been through it all together, And we’ve had our ups and downs (UPS AND DOWNS!) We’re gonna stay with you forever, at least until the world stops going round’’. Even in the 2007-8 campaign, staring at a -15 points deduction, the fans never lost hope. The Jewish people have also been ‘Marching On Together’ through the many ups and downs of our seemingly unending exile. We are also awaiting a return to the REAL promised land and the ingathering of exiles, rebuilding of the temple and the arrival of the Moshiach. May it be speedily in our days. On and On... ROSH HASHANAH DATES Dear Editor, This year, Rosh Hashanah is on Shabbat and Sunday. This means that the first two days of Succot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are all on weekends too. This is a great convenience; most working people will not need to take leave for six of the seven days of Yom Tov in September and October. Yom Kippur will be on Monday, but at least Kol Nidrei will be on Sunday so there will be no need to rush home from work. This convenient arrangement has not happened since 2009 – an 11-year gap. Why can’t it happen more often? In fact, it usually does happen more often. In the long term, on average, it happens in exactly two years out of seven or about 28.6% of years. Sometimes it happens very often. It never happens in three consecutive years, but it happened in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 – four times in five years. But four out of five is very rare; it will not happen again until 2175, 2176, 2178 and 2179. Gaps of 11 years are even rarer. The last one was from 1762 to 1773, just before the American War of Independence. The next time will be from 2256 to 2267. From 1762 to 2009 and from 2009 to 2256 are both 247 years. This is no coincidence. Patterns in the Jewish calendar usually, but not always, repeat after 247 years. In every 11-year gap, there are of course ten years without a Shabbat start. The pattern of weekdays of Rosh Hashanah for these ten years is always the same: Thursday, Thursday, Monday, Thursday, Thursday, Monday, Monday, Thursday, Monday, Monday. There is never a Tuesday start to Rosh Hashanah in such a gap. The last Tuesday start was in 2008 and the next is in 2021, a gap of 13 years. Can there ever be a gap of longer than 11 years between Saturday Rosh Hashanahs? Yes; it is theoretically possible to have a gap of 14 years. However, it has never happened yet, and the first one will not happen for over 33,000 years. Another point to note about this year is that we blow the shofar every weekday morning in Ellul, but not normally on Erev Rosh Hashanah so as to make a distinction between the voluntary blowing in Ellul and the compulsory one on Rosh Hashanah. However, following Minhag Anglia, we do blow on Erev Rosh Hashanah this year because we won’t blow on the first day of Rosh Hashanah as it’s Shabbat, and that makes the required break. Year Six pupils at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School competed against each other in the annual Jewish Mastermind Competition. All pupils competed against each other for a place in the final by completing a question paper of 30 Jewish general knowledge questions.

The four finalists - Roni Ben-Shir, Mia Bluman, Ellie Frankel and Ruby Marcovitch - each had two rounds of two minutes in which to answer as many Jewish general knowledge questions as possible. Well done to Roni for being crowned the WIJPS 2020 Jewish Mastermind Champion.

On Monday 20th July Year 6 had an extra special send off, despite lockdown, which resulted in a spectacular evening for the annual MFS siyum. This was held for the first time in the RAF museum carpark to allow for social distancing. The Year 6 children and their families stood by their cars whilst the presentations and Divrei Torah took place celebrating the children’s memorable journeys at MFS. The head teacher, Karen Kent, reminded the children about their wonderful teachers and experiences at MFS that

have shaped their early education as well as the pride and nachus that they have given the school and their parents before they continue their next journey onto Secondary school. The children were also reminded about the Torah values that they have learnt and absorbed at MFS as these will guide them for the rest of their lives. There was an amazing ruach throughout the evening and the event was a great success and gave all the children the opportunity to be together as a year group to create unity and a memorable farewell.

Over 1,800 viewers attended an online noholds barred interview with Lord Levy, to mark the celebration of the United Synagogue’s 150th anniversary. Mill Hill’s Rabbi Schochet, Edgware’s Rebbetzen Lister, Hampstead Garden Suburb’s Rabbanit Freidman and Kenton’s Rabbi Black conducted the interview, and the evening was introduced by United Synagogue President Michael Goldstein. The Labour Peer answered questions on a range of topics including the difficulties this country has faced during the coronavirus crisis, his fundraising successes over

the years, his childhood and upbringing, and the future of the United Synagogue. Lord Levy also shared how he discovered his ‘asking’ skills, and how they made him into the philanthropist he is today. Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet said: “It was wonderful to have more than 1,800 people watch Lord Levy be grilled by a panel of Rabbis and Rebbetzens. I want to express my personal gratitude to him for making the time to come along because I know that even in lockdown he is busier than most people might be outside of lockdown.”

GIFT Manchester’s Community Food Drive saves the day! GIFT’s recent community food drive in Manchester was a huge success, both in sourcing new food donations for GIFT Manchester’s food bank, but also involving many youngsters; who eagerly got onboard to get the community giving. Each of the 11 and 12 year olds involved, from Yavneh and Broughton Jewish Schools, designed and created their own flyers to give out in their streets. Everyone involved, all ages, young and old and all religious denominations; everyone was happy to take an item of food from their house or to just go to the shops and add a few extra items into their basket. GIFT’s Sophie Woolfstein told us “GIFT Manchester was hit by the pandemic like many other charities and food banks. None of the supermarkets were delivering more then 3 items whilst GIFT needed hundreds of food items each week. Our food stocks were really low and because of the restrictions we had single family units coming to do packathons. Each time we got calls to say how there was not enough food and how upset they were not to be able to put a decent amount of food in the bags for the recipient families. At the same time I got a call from a local teacher to ask if we had

thought if all these kids could create their own way of getting more food in, we could run a community food drive, still keeping to government guidelines. We were really stuck until this food drive came along; and everyone gave so generously-it literally saved our food bank! Unfortunately our stocks go down so quickly; knowing how well the girls and boys did, we’d love to run this again soon!” Nicola Rose told us “ I was so proud of my daughters Adina and Eliana for putting their hearts into the food drive. They were excited right from the beginning from designing and writing their flyer to organising the food into the boxes when it arrived on our doorstep. They knew they were making a big difference and it was so heartwarming to watch them doing this important mitzvah!” GIFT Manchester currently supports over 150 people, struggling financially, elderly, with physical or mental health issues. Kabbalat Shabbat at Kenton United Synagogue On Friday night 17th July some of The Travelling Chassidim ZOOMED into Kenton to lead a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat service. Rabbi Black welcomed Asher Horvoitz, pictured , and they were also joined by Yitzchak Kohn and Menashe Scharf, who were seen on screen outdoors from Scotland. Unfortunately after a few minutes rain intervened for them, but the Kenton service continued and was enjoyed by all. An inspiring way to start Shabbat.

Every one of us, together

Bike4Kef 2020 – the ride that almost didn’t happen! When the date for Bike4Kef 2020 was fixed last Autumn, everyone anticipated that the May Bank Holiday weekend would bring another memorable event. Sign-up opened in February, and all was going to plan…. And then on March 23rd, everything changed. The country in lockdown. Barnet cancelled Hendon Park. The hotel cancelled its reservation. The guest speaker unable to arrive. No mingling. No group events. Bike4Kef 2020 was looking unlikely – almost impossible! But the team at Kef would not be defeated!! And 195 riders committed to Kef!! With a tentative new date of 19th July 2020 – format unknown – plans proceeded amid significant uncertainty. The community stepped up, the riders trained – and Bike4Kef 2020 took place this past Sunday, and was our most successful ride to date with over £670,000 raised for Kef – a charity providing vital respite services to families of children and young adults with special needs. The ride was carefully planned to comply with government guidance – but the camaraderie and atmosphere were unparalleled. Departures were spread over a 4-hour window and riders were allowed to cycle in maximum groups of six. Riders were tracked, and socially-distanced pit stops were arranged along the route. Riders cycled through Hendon, Edgware, Borehamwood and Radlett, and the support received along the way propelled them to the finish line! Wet conditions meant a gravelly, challenging route, but the spirit of the riders was upbeat and positive throughout. Over 70 marshals manned the route, led by Nochum Dewhurst and tirelessly assisted by Shauli Adler and Effi

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Krawcynski. Shomrim and Hatzola supported all those who needed it, including top fundraiser Jerome Ormonde who injured himself early in the ride but finished the route with determination and commitment!! Riders travelled from Gateshead and Manchester to support Kef, with some Manchester riders actually doing the Kef ride locally. 21 past and current Kef counsellors demonstrated their commitment to Kef by being a part of this year’s ride, and over two thirds of the riders are returning sign-ups. The cross-section of riders from across the community, as well as the significant age range of riders (from 18 all the way to the over-70s!) was a credit for Kef. Riders arrived home to a delicious BBQ supper in a box – acknowledging the normal park BBQ which was not possible this year. As one rider reported – “Kef never lets us down!” Kef recognises the sacrifices made by families as riders spend hours training in the run-up to the ride and Bike4Kef is truly a family event. Mordche Werjuka, part of the organisational team, said, “The day was a celebration of KEF. To see record numbers take part, and so much support along the route, was really inspiring. Most importantly we raised vital funds for KEF. This year has been all about innovation for KEF, we have had to come up with new ways to support our service users during lockdown and now we had to come up with new ways to deliver Bike4KEF. We are incredibly grateful to those who worked so hard to ensure the ride was a success.” Kef looks forward to welcoming our riders – new and returning – to Bike4Kef 2021 in good health!

The future of The Nicky Alliance Centre has been secured thanks to public support for a crowd fundraising campaign which raised over £500,000 in just 36 hours. The outbreak of COVID-19 enforced the closure of The Centre which provides social facilities for Manchester’s older Jewish community and, with an increasing operating deficit prospects of re-opening were bleak. Michelle Wiseman, Chief Executive of Manchester Jewish Community Care which operates The Centre, said: “Our community was in great danger of losing this unique facility and we were prepared for the worst scenario. campaign was set up to raise our target which we knew would enable us to continue our work well into the future. “The community didn’t let us down. We hit our target figure and we are preparing the building to reopen as soon as we are advised that it is safe to do so and we feel that our members can return to a comfortable and protected environment.” The Centre will operate on a new model, making its resources available to wider community groups and making greater use of volunteers. Michelle concluded: “We want to thank everyone who has made this possible. The Nicky has been saved and we will be back in business as soon as possible.”

The Friendship Circle meeting online

BY ESTHER ULLMANN Mrs Esti Bruck of The Friendship Circle has been reporting how Covid-19 has “brought people together” albeit digitally. Initiatives set up by the club in response to the real threat of loneliness that loomed in the wake of the virus, included the “Shabbos in the Home” packages that were issued, bingo, quizzes and game night. It has been as busy as ever at the club, with

their buddy system transformed to enable friends to connect with each other regularly within the safety guidelines. Walks in the park have been held where safe to do so. With plans to reopen when made practical, the Friendship Circle is considering securing larger premises in order to continue their good work. Forty-five people took part in a virtual talent show, as well as remote dance clubs, giving all a good chance of good cheer.

23 JULY 2020

TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON As we are approaching Tisha b'Av, it is a time for self-reflection and therefore I am more serious, as I look to the unfortunate events unfolding in eretz Yisroel and the wider world. We recall the destruction of both Temples and other tragedies as a result of sinat chinam (baseless hatred), and we must remain vigilant to avoid loshon hora. Mistakes such as these can take but a second, with the consequences lasting a lifetime. Aside from my own disasters there has been much which affected me this past year, and readers will recall that I lost both parents. In a few months it will be the end of the year for my father, and I have given a lot of thought to unfinished conversations, unspoken apologies and missed opportunities. Of course, I can easily apply these same thoughts to my own family, the key difference being that my children won't have the benefit of adult maturity, by that I mean they won't be 30, 40 or 50 when I'm gone, and will 'de facto' have a more immature response to my passing, when it comes. My column this week is thus more reflective of what lies ahead, and although I’m known to be an upbeat character, there are times where my psyche drags me off the battlements of optimistic denial. I apologise in advance if my soul searching makes for unusually sombre reading. Over the past few weeks, I have been reading a gripping if somewhat forthright book by Henry Marsh, a retired neurosurgeon, combining anecdotes of his life with fascinating professional insights. In one chapter of Do No Harm [Carcinoma] he talks about his mother's death from metastatic cancer, which resonated loudly for myself. Marsh also makes observations which I had considered, but parked deep within my own subconscious, in suggesting that a heart attack or stroke (preferably whilst asleep), might be regarded as a ‘good and quick death.’ Of course, the components of this last sentence are at odds with each other, as ‘good’ and ‘death’ don't belong in the same sentence. As a surgeon dealing with the raw and often brutal manner of hospital deaths, he knows this ‘preferred’ exit from one’s life is unlikely to be a reality for most people, including himself. If anyone could be described as having experienced a ‘good death,’ (and we could hardly ask them) it might possibly include my own mother, slipping away peacefully, her heart simply stopping, like a clock on a timer. It couldn’t have described my father with ALS, or indeed anyone suffering late-stage cancer, for I’ve witnessed both. Dr Marsh described his mother being robbed of the facial features which ‘define one's

Jacqueline Curzon PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY

The cycle of life and death is forever constant. Think of life as a journey taken in the snow, and all that remains will be our middos footprints… personality.’ My father was in that parlous condition when I last saw him, although I knew the wonderful human being, still vibrant and present only a day before, was finally trapped within his failing body. In that final, 11th-hour monologue (by virtue of chemical subjugation) I tried to create a conversation, of sorts. I hoped he could still hear my voice, but his death was a horror that most could not comprehend, and - as I previously remarked - although none would have let an animal suffer like this, my father would have endured his pain nobly, to his last breath. I sometimes think of father's life as a journey, not with carbon footprints, but rather with middos footprints. As he went through the highs and lows of life, he forged a path of good memories, strewn with good deeds and littered with flowers, representing all the hearts he had touched. This path would likely have taken him into the world to come, where he would have been reunited with the family he had lost, and is now awaiting those still to come. I remember the penultimate time I saw him, when he was still in reasonable shape, and we just sat, holding hands, looking at each other with little dialogue - or just a silence between

us. Almost subliminally, we knew what each other was thinking: he was looking at me with sorrow, perhaps for certain missed opportunities, and I was looking at him with deep regret for not appreciating his unvoiced, but unquestionable affection. I loved my parents dearly, but - putting aside the predictable differences and occasional disputes we faced - they weren't touchy-feely people who wore their hearts on their sleeves. I'm far more the ‘heart-wearing’ type. Nonetheless, I remember as I stood up to leave - worrying that I might never see him again - he stood with difficulty to bid me goodbye, and I enveloped him in a massive hug, and said, ”Dad, I love you SO much. I will always love you." This sweet, brave man just hugged me back and cried. I tore myself away with difficulty and gave him a big smile as I left. His love for me was often unspoken, but it was there, unequivocally. This unique love of parent and child is one Marsh describes as ‘pure and totally selfless,’ with no ulterior motive. It is hugely different from that of a husband and wife. I remember historically making a 150-mile trip from Aberdeen to see him, when mother rang me to say he had fallen off a ladder. I catapulted myself onto a long-distance coach and rolled into the hospital late that night, to receive a huge grin and almost a telling off for making the journey. We laughed; there was never a question that I would not have come, and he knew it. My inability to be companionable in his last few months of life was largely due to my current illness, and I still beat myself up over it, because he may not have understood my absence, with his unpredictable and deteriorating neurological condition. Even though almost a year has passed, I retire each night, looking at a picture of me sitting with my parents, my mother still with the same perceptive expression and knowing smile, and my father looking at the camera with the bright smile, eyes 'shining-with-pride' expression that he always wore. It is only their physicality which is gone. I’m sure they hear me speak to them. As shabbat ended and I heard maariv, complete with the mourners Kaddish, from a neighbouring garden, I transported myself forwards in time, wondering how family and friends might regard my own life, whilst reciting these responses. The cycle of life and death is forever constant, with none of us able to escape the judgement bell when it rings. Since I appreciate that love can be absolute, even if imperfect, I wonder if I've told my own children often enough that I care about them, and sometimes I imagine them looking at a photograph of me, as I’m doing now. I hope they might feel an emotional tug, perhaps laced with a tinge

of regret, that we haven't invested more time in OUR relationship. Imperfect as it also is. Emotions run very deep, and I still remember acutely the devastation I felt when my maternal grandmother died, even though I was only 7. I remember the enormous vacuum, the void in no longer being able to see her. But there was a little rainbow following the storm, when my parents brought grandma's piano home, and that was the catalyst to my musical education and subsequent career. When my own mother died, suddenly, I'd seen her just the previous week, fully in charge of her faculties, and that ‘void’ was largely absent, although I still wished for more conversation rather than allowing her to sleep or immerse herself in reading, both avocations of the elderly. I should have pressed her to fill our knowledge gaps. The adage of ‘only appreciating something when you've lost it,’ is so true. I know as a middle-aged person myself, the value of time needed for relationships. I also admit my own dereliction in not doing more with my children, and wonder if they'll feel that same regret when they can no longer sit with me, ask about my life, listen to my adventures and value my achievements. Who will tell them about it when I'm not here? Maybe that is why I had the idea of writing an autobiography, to fill the gaps, and give my own kinderlach the knowledge which they will doubtless regret not knowing, when I am in my 11th hour, and it’s too late. Before long we will find ourselves at Rosh Hashanah, and the judgement awaiting us. I think of those who have had a terrible year, and it reminds me to thank G-d daily for the fact I can still celebrate my life. There is a verse in Koheles which reflects a similar sentiment. ‫ל־בית ִמ ׁ ְש ֶּתה־־‬ ּ ֵ ‫ ִמ ּ ֶלכֶ ת ֶא‬,‫ית־א ֶבל‬ ֵ ‫ל־ב‬ ּ ֵ ‫טוֹ ב לָ לֶ כֶ ת ֶא‬ ֹ‫ יִ ֵּתן ֶאל־לִ בּ ו‬,‫ל־ה ָא ָדם; וְ ַה ַחי‬ ָ ‫ הוּא סוֹ ף ָּכ‬,‫ַ ּב ֲא ׁ ֶשר‬ which loosely translates as, ‘It is better to visit a house of mourning than a house of joy, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.’ All that is left of a man - if he is fortunate - is his good name and good deeds. This was true of my parents, and it is incumbent on me to strive for this also, to make a difference to the lives of my own family, to those in our community and across the wider world. Some of this I manage through my journalistic or musical endeavours, and I am grateful to readers who have told me that I give them chizzuk. Whatever I strive for, I must achieve whilst I still have time. If I am fortunate then, like my father, my final cadenza will be a path adorned with hearts, flowers and my good deeds. Add the cherry tomatoes, basil, mozzarella balls and mixed herbs and mix well. 6) In a mixer, whisk together the eggs, flour, baking powder and salt and pepper. 7) Pour this into the tomato mixture and transfer to the prepared cake tin. 8) Bake for 10 minutes and then remove briefly. 9) Add the sliced tomatoes positioned in a circular pattern starting from the outside and then return to the oven for a final 35 minutes or until golden and set; a knife inserted in the centre comes out clean. 10) Leave to cool for about 20 minutes before removing from the cake tin.

ASK THE RABBI

23 JULY 2020

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com IS IT TIME TO QUIT MY JOB? Dear Rabbi Lockdown has given me a lot of time to think about my life and especially my job. I never particularly liked what I was doing but it brought me a good income. Now I am at a crossroads and I am seriously considering changing jobs to doing something I enjoy. I am just scared to take the leap because it will take time to build. Am I better off staying with the devil I know, or look for my paradise elsewhere? Benny Dear Benny I am sure a lot of people are in the same boat as you. Working from home provided many people with a new perspective. Getting up bright and early each morning, dressing, hopping on a packed train, or into traffic in your car to go to a job that you don’t really like, can be emotionally and psychologically draining. To be sure, many will have conditioned themselves to do this and it makes sense if that’s what pays the bills and puts bread on the table. However, the work from home environment broke that routine and was like pressing the pause button to suddenly consider everything. Irvine or ‘Irv’ Robbins was born in 1917. He was born in Winnipeg to Eastern European Jewish immigrants. He grew up working in his father’s ice cream parlour in Tacoma, Washington. He always finished the day happy and loved making other

people happy. In 1930 he had his Bar Mitzvah and he ensured to save whatever money he got. After serving as an army sergeant in World War II, Robbins took the money he saved from his Bar Mitzvah, plus the money he earned from working with his Dad, and opened his own Snowbird Ice Cream parlour in 1945 in Glendale, CA. In 1948, Irv Robbins joined forces with his brother-in-law Bert Baskin and - the legendary Baskin-Robbins was born! What’s the take away from that? I think there are two distinct lessons. First, have a dream. Know what you want, ambitiously pursue it and make it happen. Second, love what you do. What is it they say, “If you love what you do you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” (Or in the words of the ancient Rabbis: “Wealth is determined by being happy with what you have.”). If you don’t like what you’re doing and you resent your job, then every day is going to be a new hurdle; you’ll resent each morning that you wake up. If, however, you love what you do then you’ll embrace whatever the challenges as opportunities. But this doesn’t always mean changing jobs or changing other dimensions of your reality. Sometimes it’s about discovering a newfound love and fervour in your present reality. So how does one keep the passion alive? Many people will overlook the fact that Baskin Robbins has the number 31 hidden in its logo. The origin of this is they created

a new flavour for every day of the month. The point is, let no two days be the same. Each day should bring something new to the table – however small or subtle the change – but it ensures each day is fresh. That can make all the difference. Today Irv would be proud to know that his initial Bar Mitzvah money has yielded more than eight thousand franchises worldwide. The bottom line is, whatever your personality – whether you’re a strawberry twist or a chocolate fudge – pursue your dreams, love what you do and above all else, always seek to add new flavour to each day.

WAS MY SON DENIED A MITZVAH? Dear Rabbi I am an 80 year old modern orthodox lady. My sister died yesterday and the funeral was today. I told my brother in law that my husband I and my son will be at the funeral. I got a phone call last night from a great nephew to say his mother the deceased daughter does not want my son to come; they have a list and only 30 people allowed. I said but it’s her only nephew. No was the answer. I went to the funeral there were not 30 people there. I feel my son was stopped from performing a great Mitzvah escorting a deceased person. What do you think about this? Daisy

Dear Daisy Firstly I am very sorry for your loss. You have three options here – let’s call them the three R’s: (1) Recognise that in her grief over the loss of her mother, you should not be judging your niece for any decisions made. (2) Realise that sometimes circumstances change. I have attended recent funerals where the limit was thirty but, even as the intent was to have thirty present, sometimes some

Pirkei Avot After finishing Tehillim last week we now move onto our latest project, ‘Pirkei Avot – Ethics of the Fathers.’ Before each chapter we recite the famous mishna in Sanhedrin ‘Kol Yisrael yesh lahem chelek l’Olam Habah - All Jews have a portion in the World to Come.’ Although these words give each one of us the comfort in the knowledge that we all have a beautiful Afterlife waiting for us, we must be warned that bad behaviour can chas veshalom make us lose our portion. Everlasting bliss is not a given, it must be earned. The first mishnah in our new series then begins with the famous words which are also a well known popular song. ‘Moshe

people don’t turn up for one reason or another. (3) Respect the memory of your sister and don’t make this into a thing. Mourn her loss and offer comfort where so required rather than allowing any hard feelings to fester. Your son wasn’t denied a mitzvah. His intention was to go, circumstances dictated otherwise. Either way then his good intention is tantamount to having attended. Wishing you and all your family a long life.

Mishna 1 Kibel torah M’Sinai. Moses received the Torah from Sinai, and passed it down to Joshua, who passed it to the Elders, who passed it to the Prophets who passed it to the Men of the Great Assembly.’ Right at the beginning of Judaism’s book of ethics, we see the importance of transmission. Our history and culture must be passed down father to son, mother to daughter and so on. Our great heritage can only be maintained if future generations are inspired by their forbears. One can preach all day long but simple actions allow our children to watch us and learn from us and keep the flame of Torah burning brightly throughout the generations.

The mishnah ends with sound advice. The Men of the Great Assembly taught us three things, to be deliberate in judgement, develop many disciples and build a fence around the Torah. Building boundaries are a vital part of safety. In the same way one would never leave an open roof without a fence, one must protect themselves from spiritual harm by every means possible. If one knows of a particular treif restaurant that entices him on the way home from work, take another route. This example can be translated into all our lives and may we all take the lessons of this mishnah into our lives and become better people, Amen.

in his early days Nebuchadnezzar served as a secretary and scribe for a previous Babylonian monarch. Once, when Nebuchadnezzar was absent from work, other royal secretaries of the king drafted a letter to be sent to the Jewish king of Judah, Chizkiah. The letter began: “Greetings to King Chizkiah! Corona Diary #12

23 JULY 2020

Tisha B’Av and Corona BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN It is that “time” again. The entire world is mired in an international health crisis which doesn’t distinguish between Jew and non-Jew- the virus impacts and infects everyone alike. Not only are our health vulnerabilities equivalent but, ultimately, our fates are interwoven. This pandemic can only be controlled or managed if all citizens exhibit responsible behavior. The fate of Jews and non-Jews are completely co-dependent. Even Israelis realize that our ability to surmount this pandemic is tethered to the broader ability of the world’s population to flatten the curve. This microscopic virus has unified humanity and created a unique sense of shared experience between Jew and non-Jew. By contrast, this coming week we mark a very Jewish event- another Tisha B’av without our full return to Yerushalayim and without the construction of our Mikdash. Beyond mourning the loss of land and Mikdash, we mourn the after–effects of our dismissal from Israel: two thousand years of harsh exile, cruelty and suffering. Mourning these tragedies feels very parochial and extremely “national”. We mourn events which specifically affected Jews and Jewish history and we lament for our uniquely Jewish suffering throughout the ages. The sorrow of Tisha Be’av reflects the tragedy of two thousand years of Jewish exile- an experience which is distinctively ours and in no way relevant to an international audience. Can these two discrepant experiencesTisha B’av and the corona crisis- be merged? How can Tisha B’av be flavored slightly differently this year during the corona crisis? Tisha B’av, apparently, is pivoted upon historical tragedies unrelated to the health crisis of 2020. It would seem that Tisha B’av mandates a shift away from the universalism of the corona crisis to a more narrowly Jewish experience; perhaps we are meant to take a break from the corona struggle for 24 hours so that we are free to focus on the Jewish anguish of Tisha B’av. However, there is danger in divorcing Tisha b’av from the worldwide crisis enveloping us and occupying our day to day thoughts. Mourning is an intensely personal and emotional experience and failure to assimilate our Tisha b’av into our current reality can yield a lifeless and even bifurcated mourning experience “comes and goes” and remains insulated from our general experiences. How can Tisha B’av of 2020 be recalibrated to address our current struggles? Tisha B’av shouldn’t be altered but some of its themes may be reframed during this very challenging year. Though the attack of Yerushalayim and the routing of the Mikdash were directed at the Jews, there were tragic global

consequences on this day as well. Several phrases in Eichah evoke memories of Man’s original expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Chief among these phrases is the word “Eichah” itself, with which Yirmiya begins his lament. The word Eichah arouses memories of the word “Ayeca”- G-d’s inquiry and indictment of Adam and Eve as they are expelled from the Garden. The day Jews left Yerushalayim the world was expelled from its utopian potential and descended into a very dark place. Tisha B’av constituted a second fall of Man from Paradise. When Jews live in Israel, centered upon the Temple in Yerushalayim, the entire world is a better place to live. Prophecy provides direct access to the will of G-d and to future events. Sacrifices and rituals assure the direct delivery of Divine prosperity for all mankind. The world operates based on a “predictable” system of cause and effect: sin invites suffering and religious virtue yields welfare. This more systematic and methodical world is easier to navigate. Human suffering and crisis can be defused or entirely avoided through careful moral introspection and improvement. This version of the world is less random, less vulnerable and less uncertain. A world in which the presence of G-d is palpable and sweeping is a better world for all mankind. This was the world of Jews living in a Yerushalayim hinged to a Mikdash. Destroying Yerushalayim was self-destructive to humanity and soon thereafter, the world was plunged into a period of regression, and deterioration. Soon after the destruction of the second Temple a one- thousand-year period of futility commenced. In the immediate aftermath of Tisha B’av humanity suffered through the Dark Ages- lasting roughly between 5001000. In broader sense, however, the entire 1300-year period after the Roman conquest of Yerushalayim was characterized by futility, darkness and suffering. It took humanity 1300 years to climb out of the hole it dug for itself by destroying Yerushalayim and thereby dimming our planet. In the modern era, humanity has partially recovered ushering a world of science, progress and freedom – a world which has also facilitated the return of the Jewish people to their homeland. As history veers toward its redemptive conclusion and the restoration of Yerushalayim, the state of human affairs has improved dramatically; events in Yerushalayim deeply affect the general human condition. Had the Beit Hamikdash not been squandered, humanity would have enjoyed a world “closer to perfection”- less vulnerable to war, to strife, to poverty, to human suffering and, yes, less vulnerable to strange viral pandemics. We hope and pray that humanity will continue to innovate solutions to this current pandemic, but ultimately, the

Destroying Yerushalayim was selfdestructive to humanity and soon thereafter, the world was plunged into a period of regression, and deterioration. world will still remain broken until the final gathering in Jerusalem. Until the world is realigned, suffering of all different kinds will continue. The current crisis is a direct result of what happened that day in Yerushalayim and sadly the Jews are “at fault”! We were chosen as G-d’s agents in this world to represent him and to inspire the world toward monotheism and morality. Sadly, we were punished for our moral failures and forced to abdicate our homeland and our Mikdash. We are partially responsible for plunging the world into this subpar reality. On Tisha B’av let’s mourn our departure from Yerushalayim and the day the entire world went dark. This year is darker than most and hopefully our mourning will be more relevant and resonant. However, the corona crisis doesn’t only demand a reframing of Tisha B’av but also offers unique mourning experience. I am often posed the following question: How can a person honestly mourn for the restoration of a world they don’t actually yearn for. The modern world feels very comfortable and we generally, seem well-off- both materially and religiously. How can an honest person mourn a reality and a condition they are comfortable with and unwilling to replace with an alternate Messianic reality? If we are honest, some aspects of the future world for

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

which we wait and pray for are inconsistent with, and even abrasive to, modern sensibilities. Do we really covet the return of monarchy to replace democracy? Is the prospect of sacrificing animals really that enticing? Successful Tisha B’av mourning requires an “imaginative leap” to admit that our world isn’t perfect and that our sensibilities, though highly progressed, are not absolute. Tisha B’av requires us to see beyond our current “comfortable reality” and imagine a different world which operates under different terms and is driven by different values. Each year Tisha Be’av challenges us to see beyond our own world and glimpse a different one. If anything, the past six months have proven how flimsy and imperfect our current world truly is, and hopefully this year it will be easier to look past it, easier to mourn our world and easier to dream of a better place. Most of us during the pandemic have become far less comfortable in our modern world and certainly less confident in modern Man. Perhaps this year we will be even more successful in freeing our minds to imagine realities other than the one we currently inhabit. Weekly Dvar Torah F R OM E R E TZ YISRAE L

Devarim-Chazon-Eicha: A Cry for Leadership BY RABBANIT SHANI TARAGIN Every year on the Shabbat before Tisha B’Av, Jews throughout the world read the same Parasha (Devarim) and the same Haftara (first Chapter of Yeshayahu). In addition to the common theme of destruction depicted in the three haftarot for the Three Weeks, this week’s haftara also shares themes with the parasha – Devarim, and the upcoming reading of Megillat Eicha on Tisha B’Av. The most striking parallel is the word “Eicha.” The opening Midrash on Megillat Eicha (Eicha Rabba 1:1) highlights the literary connection as reflective of a thematic deterioration in the physical and moral condition of the Jewish people: Three prophesied by invoking the word “Eicha”: Moshe, Yeshayahu and Yirmiyahu. Said R. Levi: A parable. A matron had three good friends. One saw her when things were going well for her, one saw her when things were on a downward trajectory, and one saw her in her humiliation and degradation. So Moshe saw Israel while they were honorable and things were going well for them, and he said: Eicha – How can I myself

alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife? (Devarim 1:12), Yeshayahu saw them when things were beginning to go wrong, and he said: Eicha – How has the faithful city become a harlot!… (Yeshayahu 1:21) Yirmiyahu saw them in their humiliation and degradation, and said: Eicha – How doth the city sit solitary… (Eicha 1:1) Rabbi Adin Even-Yisroel Steinsaltz teaches that to understand the connection between these three cries of Eicha we must begin with Moshe’s complaint in this week’s parasha: “Eicha esa levadi” “How shall I bear it alone?” Moshe was not bemoaning the fact that he had to work hard; what troubled Moshe was the tragic fact that he alone (levadi) must bear the burden of the Jewish nation; ‘Why is no one else troubled by what is happening with each individual member of our nation? Why am I the only one who loses sleep because of the troubles of our People?!’ Moshe recounts his lament and subsequent selection of people whose forte is political-national leadership, and therefore it is important to warn them that their

responsibilities must be carried out fairly and righteously. He describes the appointment of “captains” – heads of the nation who will not just serve as judges (as Yitro had suggested), but as leaders, chosen by the nation to serve as righteous role models who will be concerned with the daily welfare and personal concerns of Am Yisrael. People who will lose sleep over the troubles of Klal Yisrael! There comes a time, Rabbi Steinsaltz explains, of “Eicha esah levadi,” when there is but one person who cares, a dearth of sensitive leadership. This is the initial stage of total moral collapse, as depicted by the next cry of Eicha – Yeshayahu’s vision preceding the destruction of Judea and Samaria. When Jews become indifferent to what is going on in their own communities, it is only a matter of time before the “faithful city” Jerusalem deteriorates and becomes “a harlot,” and a city that once overflowed with “tzedakah” – righteousness – becomes the playground of murderers. And then as R’ Levi explained in the Midrash, comes the final cry of “Eicha”

– the third stage – the inevitable dénouement: “How does the city that was full of people sit desolate.” Chazal teach us that a generation that the Beit Hamikdash is not rebuilt in its time, is considered as if they destroyed the Temple (Yerushalmi Yoma 1:1). As we hear the cry of Moshe Rabbeinu this Shabbat, resounding louder today than ever before, cognizant of the lack of moral-political-national leadership, let us be reminded of how his loneliness was resolved – righteous role models elected to take care of every individual in the nation. We will then continue to hear the cry of Yeshayahu, who also comforts us – “Sedom and Amora” like leaders can be replaced with righteous leadership. Until we change the status quo, we will continue to hear Yirmiyahu’s cries on Tisha B’Av, of a desolate Yerushalayim, yearning to be rebuilt! A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE

Not Exactly Playing to the Gallery RABBI GOODMAN The Torah does not play to the gallery. From beginning to end, it rebukes, admonishes, and reproaches the Jewish people. Frankly, the Torah would not last two minutes as a pulpit Rabbi! Nevertheless, the Torah seems to have gotten away with it for over three thousand years and, as we know from the Rambam’s ninth principle of faith, has no intention of changing its tune. We find a rather sharp ‘blow’ to our ego in this week’s Haftara which is always read on the Shabbos preceding Tisha B’Av and focuses on the underlying causes for the destruction of the Temple. With prophetic vision, the prophet Isaiah laments, “Children have I raised and exalted, but they have rebelled against Me. An ox knows his owner, and a donkey his master’s trough; Israel does not know, My people does not perceive.” In short, the prophet Isaiah tells the Jewish people that in their rebellious state and abandonment of Hashem they are spiritually lower than an ox and a donkey. Rabbi Elyah Lopian (1876-1970) questions Isaiah’s alarming assessment. An ox and a

donkey do not need to “find” their master through a lifetime of intellectual discovery and philosophical thought; their knowledge of their master and submission to his will is part of their nature. However, finding Hashem in a world that deliberately conceals Him, and unconditionally submitting ourselves to His will, is a lifetime’s work that lies far beyond the confines of our nature. Surely, Isaiah’s comparison is intrinsically flawed? Unsurprisingly, though, Isaiah did not get it wrong. Rabbi Lopian explains that Hashem ingrained into every human being’s spiritual nature a pure and undiluted belief in His existence. Although this deep-rooted belief is true of all mankind, it is more pronounced in the souls of the Jewish people¬¬—Hashem’s children. Unfortunately, though, the physical world exerts an awesome influence over us and deftly buries any semblance of innate spiritual sensitivity, leaving us to drift through life without any recognition of Hashem, nor any connection to Him. Isaiah’s accusation is justified and necessary: “Children have I raised and exalted,”

meaning Hashem has raised us like children and ingrained within us an exalted spiritual sensitivity to know and recognise Him, “but they have rebelled against Me,”— that is to say we have ruined that inner-belief with our wrongdoings. “An ox knows his owner, and a donkey his master’s trough,”— Can you not see that for the sake of the ox and donkey’s existence, I ingrained in its nature the knowledge of its master? “Israel does not know, My people does not perceive.”— Do you not think that for the sake of your souls and eternal life, I have not ingrained within you a knowledge of your Creator? Understanding our inner nature helps us to understand the Torah’s admonishing approach. Encouraging pats on the back and motivational words work well for beginners but we are not newcomers when it comes to spiritual growth. We are not starting from ground zero, working our way up from nothing to something. On the contrary, we are starting from the top; we already have everything we need—true belief in Hashem—right inside us. Our job is to hold on as tight as we can and not get swept away by the overwhelming current of life. In that

capacity, Hashem, with His unconditional love and desire for us to succeed, is always there to forewarn and protect us. Devarim RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE

MOSES’ LAST LAP

The final book of the Chumash sees Moshe Rabbenu summing up his career and giving the people a farewell message. Baruch HaShem he has been blessed with many years and he approaches the end of his book of life with a clear mind, a perceptive eye and an energetic stride. This echoes the verse from Psalm 71:9, Al tashlicheni l’et ziknah, “Do not cast me off in time of old age”, which can be interpreted as, don’t let me feel too tired to give old age a value and quality. How do we define old age? In Psalm 90 life expectancy is three score and ten or (if you’re strong) four score. These days 60, 70 or 80 are nothing special. Modern life expectancy has almost reached Moses’ 120 – hopefully “120 without falling apart”. The Levites retired at 50 (Num. 8:25-26) when they were no longer so strong and energetic. They were not lost to the community: the Torah says, “They shall serve with their brothers” (verse 26). Maybe that means they supported their fellow Levites. Or perhaps they had less onerous duties than before. They could still lock the Temple gates, sing in the choir, teach the children, and supervise loading the wagons. These days people are generally still strong and well long past the conventional 60 or 65 so there is no need for a set age for retirement. Older people can continue

TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488

to work, even at a slower pace. Society should find ways of retaining the expertise and experience of its older members.

GRAB WHAT YOU CAN

The Chumash is an extended dialogue: G-d talks to man, man talks to G-d. It is paralleled in the religious life: our prayers are like Jacob’s angels which went up to G-d and came back with His response (Gen. 28:12). In theory this is what the synagogue facilitates, but some people find their attention wandering. The Rambam says, “Clear out all other thoughts and know that you are standing before the Divine Presence” (Hil’chot T’fillah 4:16). All very well, but it is hard to banish distractions. In a parable the Chafetz Chayyim said that a poor woman had a fruit stall in the market that made a bare living. Hooligans knocked over the stall and

23 JULY 2020

the apples went flying. A passer-by re-erected her stall and picked up some of the fruit, adding this advice: “When someone grabs your apples, snatch as many as you can and put them in another bag.” The Chafetz Chayyim applied this to prayer. He said, “When distractions attack you, don’t give in. Overcome them with thoughts that outweigh the distractions.”

THE YEAR IS ALMOST OVER

Starting the Book of D’varim this Shabbat reminds us that the Jewish year is almost over. We began B’reshit on Simchat Torah and now we have completed four of the five books of the Chumash and have embarked on the fifth. Before we know it, Rosh HaShanah will have arrived. From the mathematical point of view, it takes a whole twelve months to get from one Rosh HaShanah to the next, but in reality the older you get the shorter the

These days people are generally still strong and well long past the conventional 60 or 65 so there is no need for a set age for retirement.

years seem to be. Time, in Yehudah HaLevi’s words, is the deceiver of all mankind. A year seems to take twelve months but they fly fast. The message is to use every day while you still can. The only Latin some people remember from their schooldays is “tempus fugit” (time flies) – and “carpe diem” (seize the day). Seizing the day means finding a mitzvah to do today and doing it without prevaricating or postponement. The mitzvah may be for other people. It may also be for yourself. Finish the jobs you always meant to do. Read the books you always planned to read. Tell your dear ones that you love them. If you don’t do it now the opportunity may never be there again. Rabbi Apple served for 32 years as the chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, Australia’s oldest congregation. He is now retired and lives in Jerusalem. Mesillat Yesharim: Hilchot Shabbat Part 46 RABBI MORDECHAI ULLMAN We mentioned the three points that Akavya exhorted us to constantly bring to mind: From where we come (the womb), where we are headed (the grave) and in front of Whom we are destined to give an accounting of our deeds. A person who is a swineherd (looks after pigs) and then becomes a king will constantly remember his extremely humble beginnings. Likewise, a person who is aware of how small a drop they started as, cannot help but never come to arrogance. The same with considering where we all end up – it may be morbid to think about but this too, should bring an end to all feelings of superiority. How much more so when one considers that after this 80-year long Monopoly game is up, we stand in front of the Beit Din of G-d Himself and His perfect company and a person whose pleasures were not much different to those of an animal – how will he (figuratively) raise his head in front of the Al-Mighty?

Honestly considering the above facts will cause arrogance to simply “fly away” as Ramchal says. Furthermore, even if a person has achieved success in this world, don’t we see the wheel of fortune turn? Don’t the wealthy often lose their wealth, the rulers their power and the honourable their esteem? Are there not many illnesses (may G-d spare us) that leave even the most important person in the world at the hands of someone far “less” important? How many people would these so-called distinguished people chose to completely disregard – until the underdog is their nurse on a ward? All this should prevent a person from becoming haughty and certainly when a person considers their shortcomings in their service of G-d. The way to rectify one’s shortcomings is to be willing to learn from everyone. Whoever has Torah or other truth about life to teach you (and all truth is sourced in Torah anyway) one must be willing to learn from them in order to be prevented from sinning.

I’ve heard one may not drink wine/grape juice nor eat meat/poultry during the nine days and on the morning following Tisha b’av. I understand Shabbat itself to be an exception to the nine days but was wondering how to go about performing Havdala after Shabbat?

The majority of Halachic Authorities agree that one should recite Havdala over a cup of wine or grape juice as usual. Now, who should drink the wine? According to the Shulchan Aruch, (and so is the custom of Sefardic Jews), the adult who is reciting Havdala should drink the wine. The Rema, however, writes that one should ideally give the wine (or, practically, the grape juice) to a (male) child. The child need not drink the full cup; most of the cup will suffice. Here’s the (almost) catch-22, though. In order to discharge the adults of their obligation to have Havdala, the child who drinks must be of “Chinuch” (educational) age which starts at around age 6 or 7. However, they should ideally not be of the age of Chinuch that they appreciate the calamitous loss that there is with the

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Temple’s destruction, which is around aged 9/10. Accordingly, the age of the child that is given to drink should be between 6 and 9. If the only child available is older than 9 (but under 13) some say that one should nevertheless still give it to the child, as their obligation to mourn the Temple is not absolute (since up until Bar Mitzva it is only for Chinuch purposes) unlike the adult’s. If there are no children awake, then the adult makes Havdala and drinks most of the cup as usual.

We now begin the fifth and final book of the Torah! Moshe is only about 40 days away from his death and he needs to remind the Jews of what they need to do better in future. He will also teach them many famous passages in this book of Devarim, such as Shema. In this week’s Sidra though, he tells the stories of how they unfortunately did the wrong things in the desert, such as the spies, the golden calf and the complaints. He reminds them of the great love G-d has for them - how He took care of them in the desert for forty years, turning a scary place into one of bliss. He reminds the Jewish people and their incoming leader Yehoshua that as Hashem saved them from the two mighty kings Sichon and Og, so too, He can and will save them and make them succeed in battle against the nations they are going to be facing in battle to take possession of the holy land.

In a nutshell Moshe Rabbeinu, our beloved leader for forty plus years, is only a month and a half away from his departure from this world and its time to give his parting words to the Jewish people. As a faithful shepherd he needs to rebuke the nation for what they’ve done wrong over their eventful forty years in the desert, but he does so with so much care not to shame them. This is not only rebuke though. It is in this last book of the Torah that Moshe will review the entire Torah and focus on Mitzvot that will apply when they enter the holy land. He begins by blessing them – “May Hashem make you multiply 1000 times and bless you as He has spoken.” He hints to them about sins by referencing name places, reminding them of the golden calf, the spies and some general cynicism that was found in their midst. He alludes to the sin of the golden calf, the waters of Meriva and the sin of the slander that the spies spread over the holy land.

When sending the spied the Jewish people groaned in their tents – “G-d hates us – that is why he took us out of Egypt” – a pathetic response to the care and love that G-d had shown them and imposing on G-d (as it were) their feelings when in truth it was they who were showing hatred to G-d. As a punishment only Yehoshua and Kalev would enter the land and the children. He recalls the advice of Yitro, his father in law, in appointing judges and how he warned them to judge people fairly. However, note the slight change he makes. Yitro recommended that all “small” lawsuits be brought before the lower-tier judges, whereas the “large” ones should be brought before Moshe. Moshe disagreed – a court case of £1 million is no different to £1. The way he set up the system was the “difficult” cases should come before Moshe and the easier ones in front of the lowertier judges. Moshe tells the Jewish people how G-d has taken care of them over the forty years and that they have lacked

Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.

NOTHING. Don’t fight Moav, and don’t fight Amon for they belong to the descendants of Lot. Continues Moshe, “We offered Sichon to allow us to travel through his country saying, ‘Whatever food you will give us we will pay for and we will pay for our water too’. Sichon was not interested and actually came out to “greet us” together with his nation, armed and ready for battle”. We successfully fought off Sichon and Og as that was following the will of Hashem. Women and children should stay at home and not join in the war to conquer the holy land, warns Moshe. The men, however, must get up and take possession of Eretz Yisrael. Once Yehoshua had seen the great miracles Hashem had performed for the Jewish people and how the two mighty kings Sichon and Og had fallen in front of thE Jews, he was encouraged that Hashem would do the same against all the nations they would face in their Mitzva of conquering the holy land.

then Tottenham can pounce with a win at Crystal Palace. All is not lost for both teams though as whoever finishes in seventh place will take a Europa League if Chelsea win the FA Cup. The relegation spots are all that remains to resolve with two from Aston Villa, Watford and Bournemouth joining Norwich City in the Championship next season.
