BIBI ASSASSINATION PLOT FOILED 07 JUNE 2018/ 24 SIVAN 5778
BY ADAM MOSES
Israel’s Shin Bet security services prevented a potential assassination attempt on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat in April it has been revealed. Muhammad Jamal Rashdeh, a 30-year-old Israeli Arab from East Jerusalem, was taken into custody on April 24 prior to the arrests of two further suspects who Shin Bet would not identify. The terror trio are suspected of plotting with Syrian-based, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP-GC) not only the double murders but also targeting the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem, now the U.S. Embassy, and a Canadian security delegation who were in Jerusalem to train Palestinian Authority security forces operating in the West Bank. Shin Bet officials said Rashdeh, who holds an Israeli ID card has

previously been imprisoned for terror-related offenses, intended to link with a further terrorist from Jordan. “Our Shin Bet is among the best in the world,” Barkat said in a statement. “During the entire matter of the threat I was kept apprised and realized the Shin Bet and police were on top of matters. I was instructed not to change anything from my daily routine. “These people will not deter us and we continue developing and building Yerushalayim.” As yet there has been no comment from Netanyahu. Indictments against those involved were filed last Sunday. The PFLP-GC is responsible for terror attacks going back almost five decades as they murdered nine Israeli schoolchildren and three adults in a school bus on route to Moshav Avivim in 1970. Jewish community faces numerous threats says the JLC in green paper BY LEAH WAXLER Extremism, anti-Semitism, negative notions of Jews and freedom of speech were among topics evaluated as the Jewish Leadership Council formally responded to the government’s much anticipated Integrated Communities Strategy ‘green paper’. Sajid Javid, Communities Secretary at the time, set out the £50 million plan for a more ‘united Britain’ last March prior to a 12-week consultation debate in response to a report for the Ministry by Dame Louise Casey’s highlighting the number of communities divided by race, faith or socio-economic lines two years ago. The paper is the government’s vision to build strong integrated communities based on shared rights, responsibilities and opportunities. The JLC was supportive to the government’s new Commission for Countering Extremism and welcomed engagement with it but their message was clear in their response to the paper. “As a community, we face multiple threats and Islamist extremism is a significant concern given that the Jewish community is often a primary target,” they noted. As for ‘British values’, the JLC felt it needed to be “unpicked”. “Rightly or wrongly, for many, the term
has negative connotations,” they stated. “Many instinctively know what is meant by it but for many, it is a hostile term. “Promoting why it is something which defends everyone is crucial to detoxifying the term.” The JLC noted that the Jewish community felt confident and proud of their identity and heritage whilst valuing relationships and responsibility to the wider society. But ‘respect and tolerance of other was not the same as mixing at every level which may result in more hostility if forced. “Freedom of belief is absolute but the freedom to act on a belief is not,” they noted. They added, “It is important people, regardless of faith or no faith, feel proudly British. “By celebrating faith and diversity, individuals will not feel there is a contradiction between their religion and their country. “It is vital that cultures and practices that are harmful to individuals or restrict their rights are challenged but this must be looked at carefully and in consultation with the respective communities.” On the subject of ‘migrants’, the JLC said that the UK Jewish community was largely an immigrant community so many were sympathetic to recent migrants. But some immigrants to the UK had “negative opinions of Jews” which may have

been widespread and accepted in their countries of origin. They had “no place in a cohesive society”, noted the JLC. “It is important immigrants understand that this country expects that everyone is treated fairly and respectfully so they should expect that for themselves but that it must be reciprocated.” “Integration is one of the biggest social problems of our time,” said Claudia Mendoza, JLC Director of Policy and Public Affairs. “The Jewish community is often a primary target of threats coming from those who are not well integrated so we have an interest in helping the government get this strategy right. “The government has made it clear that religious freedom is paramount and we welcome that. “We have compiled this submission to ensure the balance between genuine integration and acceptance of individuality is right and we have made ourselves available for further consultation.” On the issue of threats, the JLC made it clear that there was is apparent normalisation of anti-Semitic terms and discourse within certain elements of British society. They noted: “Much of this refers to the Jewish community in conspiratorial terms, evoking classic anti-Semitic themes, and much of this is tied to the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict, where the Jewish community is seen as responsible for the actions of Israel. “This is damaging to community cohesion and integration. “We think that anti-Semitism should be seen as an indicator of extremism.” The JLC also felt that the Jewish community

was proudly British and Jewish, integrated but not assimilated. “This is a model for other minority communities and we hope that through this submission, government will identify models of best practice,” they noted. A set of actions aim to deliver the vision at a local and national level. The JLC submitted responses from member and communal organisations of best practice and where the JLC supports or rejects policies. Submissions included World Jewish Relief’s programme to integrate Syrian refugees through work placements, CST’s on hate crime monitoring and reporting. The JLC also said it was paramount the government protected the choice of parents to educate their children in a faith setting and welcomed their support for faith schools. University students should have a place where they could be exposed to new ideas and given the opportunity to engage in robust debate. Free speech within the law should be protected on campus whilst ensuring hatred and extremism does not go unchallenged. “Free speech at universities must extend to views which some students may consider to be controversial or offensive,’ the JLC noted. “Students have the right to challenge views with which they disagree and protest such views should they wish to. However, it is crucial that in challenging or protesting another opinion, you do not deny the person with that opinion their right to free speech.” Elsewhere, the paper tackled hate crime, an exploration of law reforms on marriage and religious weddings and training for faith leaders to develop British culture and shared values. Marie met representative council members from Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow to hear their concerns and hopes for the community last Sunday. She also met leading figures from the community including Mark Cunningham, Chief Executive Officer of Manchester’s Federation of Jewish Services, Nava Kestenbaum, Head of North West Services for Charedi charity Interlink and Joshua Rowe,
Chairman of Governors at King David High School. As well as addressing Manchester’s Representative Council, Marie spoke to Whitefield Hebrew Congregation on Shabbat. Twenty-four hours later, she represented the UK Jewish communities at the international umbrella bodies, the European Jewish Congress and World Jewish Congress. And attended the Terezin Concentration Camp for the unveiling of a monument in memory to those killed there. This week she embarked on a series of meeting with main religious leaders. “Spending my first days in office in Manchester with representatives of our regional communities displays my determination to be a leader for every part of our Jewish community,” she said. “It was deeply moving to attend the unveiling of a new monument at Terezin and I was honoured to represent the Jewish community with international umbrella bodies. “I have started the way I intend to continue.” Meanwhile, the Board called on Jews throughout Britain to reach out beyond the Jewish community at a conference at JW3 last Sunday. Edwin Shuker, in his first speech as new BoD vice-president responsible for interfaith, set out his vision. “It is not enough for people of different faiths to tolerate each other,” he said: “We Jews must reach out to others and

Sajid Javid to formally consider status of Hizballah after 10,000 people from Orkney to St Ives sign CAA’s Parliamentary Petition BY JW REPORTER As hundreds of supporters of Hizballah, the genocidal anti-Semitic terrorist organisation, prepare to parade through central London with Hizballah flags, over 10,000 people from 646 of the UK’s 650 Parliamentary constituencies have signed a Parliamentary Petition calling for Hizballah to be fully proscribed. The Parliamentary Petition, started by CAA, rapidly gained 10,000 signatures after a number of days as the most popular petition on Parliament’s website.
be required to formally and publicly respond to the Parliamentary Petition, as the Government is required to respond to any Parliamentary Petition gaining more than 10,000 signatures. If the number of signatures on the Parliamentary Petition now climbs to 100,000, a debate in the House of Commons will be triggered. The petition can be found at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/219020. The dangerous pro-Hizballah parade is currently permitted due to a legal loophole. Whilst the British government has proscribed

The petition was snubbed by some Jewish community organisations, but fiercely backed by figures such as Campaign Against Anti-Semitism’s Honorary Patron, Colonel Richard Kemp, the former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, who tweeted that every British citizen should sign the petition in support of British soldiers, describing Hizballah terrorists as “animals” who “murdered and maimed British soldiers”. Now, as one of his first acts as Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, will
the “military wing” of Hizballah under the Terrorism Act 2000, the “political wing” is not proscribed, something that even Hizballah finds ridiculous. Indeed, its Deputy Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, mockedthe distinction, saying in 2012: “We don’t have a military wing and a political one; we don’t have Hizballah on one hand and the resistance party on the other… Every element of Hizballah, from commanders to members as well as our various capabilities, are in the service of the resistance, and we

have nothing but the resistance as a priority.” The Home Secretary is the only person whose signature can instantly proscribe the whole of Hizballah. We have already written an open letter to him along with a prominent Muslim anti-extremism organisation. In our letter we noted: “Hizballah seeks the extermination of Jews. Its Secretary-General could not have been plainer when he said: ‘If Jews all gather in Israel, it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide.’ Hizballah

has acted on its murderous mantra, bombing Jewish civilians from Buenas Aires to Burgas, and it has even been blamed for two bombings targeting Jews in London in 1994. That this brazen annual parade can take place makes a mockery of counter-extremism initiatives, emboldens those who seek to incite hatred and shames our nation. We have also met with the Metropolitan Police Service along with other Jewish organisations to voice our grave security concerns. The danger posed by this parade to British Muslims and Jews is clear and present. It is a rallying point for anti-Muslim bigots who wish to portray all British Muslims as terrorist sympathisers, and for anti-Semitism, who admire Hizballah’s stated mission to seek out and murder Jews around the world. Last year, the terrorist Darren Osborne decided to ram the march with his car but he was unsuccessful and instead rammed his car into a mosque, killing one and injuring twelve. Simultaneously, the march itself is a font of anti-Semitic invective, last year even featuring claims bellowed by its leader that ‘Zionists’ paid the Government to burn down Grenfell Tower. Last year’s pro-Hizballah parade resulted in Campaign Against Anti-Semitism having to make complaintsto the Charity Commission about the charity which organises
the pro-Hizballah parade, and privately prosecuting the parade’s leader. The parade will be closely monitored by a substantial evidence gathering team from our Demonstration and Event Monitoring Unit and then analysed by our Crime Unit and Regulatory Enforcement Unit. It is our intention to take legal action if possible. Gideon Falter, Chairman of Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, said: “10,000 decent people from every part of the UK, from Orkey to St Ives, have stood together to say that enough is enough. We want these pro-terrorist parades off our streets. They make a mockery of counter-extremism efforts, are a rallying point for supporters of Islamist terrorism and fuel the farright, already resulting in a terrorist attack which has killed one British Muslim and injured twelve others. Under Parliamentary rules, the Home Secretary is now required to respond to the petition, and as a decent man who has long stood firm against Islamist extremism, we ask him to respond by fully proscribing Hizballah under the Terrorism Act and thereby closing the legal loophole which allows these revolting and dangerous pro-Hizballah parades to take place.”

IDF struggle to contain wave of ‘bomb’ kites from Gaza BY ADAM MOSES
Israel Defence Forces have fought a wave of fires caused by ‘bomb’ kites rigged with incendiary devices sent by Gaza-based terrorists over recent days. Kites have also been attached to burning rags to start fires across the border. Fires were reported in the Kissufim, Nir Am, Ein HaShloshah and Be’eri areas on Tuesday. Another fire was in the northwestern Negev by Netiv HaAsarah. But the most serious fire was close to Sapir College where flames raged out of control. There were no reports of injuries but damage has been caused to forests and agricultural fields as community life was disrupted near the Gaza Strip. Thick smoke also closed a highway and trains to Sderot. Hadashot News reported that terrorists used balloons carrying materials that burned longer into southern Israel. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu
instructed the head of the National Security Council, Meir Ben Shabbat, to consider Israel using tax collected from the Palestinian Authority to pay for the kite damage. But Netanyahu’s office would not state a figure to be deducted. Amir Dan, of Israel’s tax authority, told Israel’s Army Radio agricultural damage stood at $1.4 million and could rise. Though Israel’s military has sophisticated technology to destroy incoming rockets and Hamas’ underground tunnel network, it has struggled to halt the ‘low-tech’ kites landing in Israel. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman told Israel’s Parliament that a third of 600 kites launched from Gaza had started blazes destroying 2,250 acres of farmland. Aside from fighting fires the IDF killed an axe-wielding Palestinian attempting to cross into Israel from Gaza on Monday. A second terrorist was injured as the duo tried to breach a fence. The dead man was identified as Ramzi
Naajar by Palestinian officials. Israeli Cabinet minister Yoav Gallant ruled out a formal truce with Hamas as it is sworn to Israel’s destruction. But he suggested Israel would offer peaceful gestures. “It is very sad to say but the life of a Palestinian kid in Gaza is worthless to all the Palestinians and all the Arabs unless an Israeli soldier is killing him,” he said. “This is so sad and so bad. If they want to shell us we will defend our population.” Other sporadic protests and rocket fire have continued since recent tensions and bloodshed last month. Israeli jets bombed 15 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip after rockets and mortar shells were launched into southern Israel over the weekend. And rocket fire on Saturday night was the first since Hamas declared an ‘informal’ ceasefire. The Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted a number of rockets fired.
An IDF spokesman said that Israel struck Hamas military compounds, weapons production and storage sites. The military also struck five Hamas naval targets in northern Gaza. “The weekend events are a continuation of repeated attempts by the Hamas terrorist organisation to turn the area of the fence, above and below the ground, into a combat zone, carry out terrorist attacks, damage security infrastructures and endanger the lives of Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers,” an IDF statement added. “The IDF views the Hamas terror organisation’s actions with great severity and will continue fulfilling its mission to protect Israeli civilians as necessary. “If its choice is to keep following the path of terror instead of solving the Gaza residents’ distress, it will keep paying a heavy price that will grow as long as it takes.”
UNESCO has published a new guide to address anti-Semitism The educational manual, introduced by Director General Audrey Azoulay, is geared toward youth, teachers and political leaders warning that anti-Semitic attitudes are no longer limited to radical or extremist groups but are appearing more in the mainstream. Both forms of education will ensure anti-Semitism is not seen as exclusive to the Holocaust. “Anti-Semitism is not the problem of Jewish communities alone, nor does it require the presence of a Jewish community to proliferate,” said Azoulay, UNESCO’s first Jewish director general. “It exists in religious, social and political forms and guises, on all sides of the political spectrum.” The new study was a joint initiative of UNESCO and the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe) published due to a feeling of renewed danger amongst Jews in Europe. The guide specifically asks European governments to educate students from a younger age so they are more resistant to hateful and anti-Semitic ideas as they grow up. The document contains stereotypes that European students should be taught including that Jews are more loyal to Israel, blood libel claims and conspiracies that Jews are plotting to take over the world. Underpinning the UNESCO document is a perspective that it is essential to teach about anti-Semitism education and Holocaust education in tandem. World Jewish Congress and UNESCO have teamed up to create an interactive Holocaust education website. The site includes a chronology of the Holocaust, video testimonies of survivors and updates about Holocaust denial, Nazis and collaborators. An “Educate A Friend” feature enables
users to ‘nominate’ a friend to receive automatic emails containing information and facts. The website will be paired with a social media campaign to reach hundreds and thousands of young people with the goal of reaching a million people. The launch at the end of 2018 is in English, French and Spanish.

Netanyahu holds Downing Street talks with May BY ADAM MOSES The escalating threat of Iran was top of the agenda as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Theresa May at Downing Street yesterday. The Israeli leader has made the topic his number one message throughout a whistle-stop tour of discussions with European leaders especially President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal. And Netanyahu had good reason after Iran leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei labelled Israel a “cancerous tumour” that needed to be removed just prior to the trip. Khamenei added that Iran would increase its uranium enrichment if the nuclear deal collapsed. “Our stance against Israel is the same stance we have always taken,” Khamenei tweeted. “Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated. It is possible and it will happen.” Netanyahu described the tweet as “quite extraordinary.” He added on his official website, “Khamenei, the ruler of Iran, declared his intention to destroy the State of Israel. “He explained how he would do this, with
the unrestricted enrichment of uranium in order to produce an arsenal of nuclear bombs. “We are not surprised. We will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapon.” The Iran debate has dominated headlines in recent weeks. Netanyahu welcomed Trump’s nuclear deal decision to withdraw last month though co-signatories Germany, Britain, France, Russia and China want to maintain it. After landing in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned Khamenei. Speaking alongside Netanyahu, she said Israel’s security was a top priority for Germany. Of the nuclear debate, she noted: “We are not in agreement on all questions, but we are friends, we are partners.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said France would insist on dialogue with Iran. BICOM CEO James Sorene is well aware of the importance of this visit from the Israeli leader. “Netanyahu will be forgiven for thinking that the arc of history is bending to his will,” he said. “He arrives in London just weeks after the US pulled out of an Iran nuclear deal he opposed. A week later the US recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, an issue Netanyahu campaigned about for decades.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
“Netanyahu will be looking for support from Britain for Israeli action in Syria against Iran, sympathy for Israel’s terrible dilemma on the Gaza border and a willingness to listen to what Israeli intelligence unearthed about Iran’s nuclear secrets. “Prime Minister May wants to save the nuclear deal in some form and will ask tough questions about recent Palestinian deaths in
Gaza. For both leaders this is an opportunity to consolidate booming trade ties and compare notes on counter-terrorism.” Only time will tell how influential to the Iran debate the schedule of meetings have been.

Quds Day demostration
OP-ED - BY MARK GARDNER
Mark Garener
This Sunday, CST’s security teams will work with the Metropolitan Police on one of the trickiest events in our annual calendar, the Quds Day demonstration. It is not a Jewish event. In fact, it is just about the exact opposite of a Jewish event. CST’s role will be to help secure those attending the Zionist Federation’s counter-protest against the Quds Day demonstration. This is a fundamental part of our mission to ensure that our Jewish community can lead the life of its choice. In this case, it means helping to ensure that that our community is able to lawfully protest against those who wish it harm, because Quds Day is a demonstration that calls for the destruction of Israel, and hatefully rants and raves against Zionism. For example, at last year’s demonstration, the lead agitator told the crowd that Zionists were responsible for the appalling Grenfell Tower fire tragedy. He said: “Some of the biggest corporations who
were supporting the Conservative Party are Zionists. They are responsible for the murder of the people in Grenfell, in those towers in Grenfell, the Zionist supporters of the Tory Party.” Not content with such rabid anti-Zionism, he then went even further, saying: “It is the Zionists who give money to the Tory party, to kill people in high rise blocks.... Careful, careful, careful of those rabbis who belong to the Board of Deputies, who have got blood on their hands.” Such hatred is shocking to read and even more shocking to witness, but should it really surprise us when so many of the Quds Day demonstrators will be proudly flying bright yellow Hizbollah flags, which show a fist in the centre, clutching an assault gun? This is the same Hizbollah that openly wants to destroy Israel and that targets Jews around the world for terrorism. It is the same Hizbollah that helped murder 84 Jews in the 1994 truck bombing of the Jewish Community Centre in Buenos Aires. If you can imagine the dreadful impact that this had on Argentinian Jewry, on their sense of safety and future, then you will understand why CST takes its mission so seriously. CST is one of many British Jewish organisations that have repeatedly appealed to the Government to ban Hizbollah here, including the flying of HIzbollah flags. Unfortunately, the Government insists on making a distinction between Hizbollah’s military and political wings, banning the military, but not the political. Bizarrely, this happens even though Hizbollah itself insists that there is no such distinction and no such wings. We
will continue to press for a full ban on all of Hizbollah, as will many other Jewish groups. Why does our own Government, which normally stands strongly against terrorism and its extremist drivers, make the false distinction? The answer is that the Foreign Office points at the reality of Hizbollah’s importance in the Lebanese Parliament and then says that they cannot be barred from speaking with the group. The outcome of this is that you can fly the Hizbollah flag in London, so long as you make some kind of ridiculous excuse about supporting the group’s basically non-existent political wing. Quds Day occurs each year at the end of the Muslim festival of Ramadan. It was started by Ayatollah Khomeini after the Iranian Revolution and remains an event that is only really attended by pro-Iranian regime elements from the Muslim community, in London and in other cities around the world. It is an extreme that itself attracts other extremes, so for example the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign will have representation, but the separate less extreme Palestine Solidarity Campaign will not. As usual, the Neturei Karta sect and a handful of far left Jews will also show up, allowing the organisers to claim that they only hate all Zionists, not all Jews. The demonstration may also attract another counter-protest from anti-Muslim far right style groups, such as the Football Lads Alliance, which shows how today’s street politics and bullying are moving on from the days of Jew obsessed neo-Nazis such as the National Front and British National Party. CST, the Zionist Federation and other

Jewish groups have strongly requested that the Police ensure our Jewish counter-protest is kept strictly separate from any others who turn up with their own agendas. It is not an easy job for the Police, who must also be keenly aware that Darren Osborne tried to attack last year’s Quds Day demonstration, before he gave up and later that night instead used his rental van to commit a deadly terrorist attack against Muslim worshippers leaving Finsbury Park mosque. So, the CST and the Police will help secure our communal counter-protest, whilst the Police must also protect the Quds Day demonstrators from potential attack. Then, add to the mix, the potential for the Football Lads Alliance to turn up, seeking to make their own brand of trouble that we want nothing to do with. At times like these, our community must stand by its own clear principles. These are neatly summarised by the statement released by the Zionist Federation, with support from the Board of Deputies, Jewish leadership Council and others. It states: “Let us be clear; the ZF, as well as our partners do not support, encourage or condone any far-right or Neo-Nazi groups or messages, either from outside our community or inside it. …We stand against anti-Semitism, the desire to annihilate Israel, Homophobia, Islamaphobia, and all other forms of racism and hatred. We must stand strong and not allow extremists on either side to damage or silence our message where we demand that hatred and intolerance have no place on the streets of London.”

Aish YP’s Find Joy Amidst Pain This past Bank Holiday Monday, 15 participants of Aish UK’s young professionals programme travelled to Poland with JRoots guide Rabbi Raphy Garson on an emotional journey of discovery. Landing in Warsaw, the group headed south to the small town of Dąbie – once home to thousands of Jewish residents, where they climbed up a narrow wooden staircase into the dusty attic of a run-down, derelict apartment building. At the far side of the attic and barely visible in the dim light is what remains of the arch that crowned the Aron Kodesh (Holy Ark) of

Dąbie’s main Synagogue. In gold and blue lettering, the mural reads ‘this is the house of God, and these are the gates of Heaven’. Seeing the remains of the Holy Ark loom out from the darkness was an incredibly moving and powerful moment. The fact that young, proud Jews had journeyed back to a town that was rendered totally ‘Judenrein’ 70 years ago to bear witness to the atrocities of the Holocaust was more than enough reason to break into an impromptu dance right there in the tiny attic! The group then confronted the infamous killing fields of Chełmno; the site widely recognised as the ‘birthplace’ of the Nazi’s policy of mass genocide. From here, it was on to the Łódź ghetto and cemetery, where the group heard numerous inspirational stories of the people who had once made Łódź such a vibrant city. From Israel Poznański, an influential philanthropist who single-handedly financed schools, hospitals and synagogues across Poland, to the four young leaders of the Bnei Akiva movement who were on their way to a national conference a year after the war ended when they were tragically ambushed and murdered by an anti-Semitic mob. historic Synagogues. Kabbalat Shabbat in the majestic Tempel Shul together with hundreds of youngsters from America and Australia was a particularly spirited highlight of the weekend. On Sunday, the group travelled to the jewel in Hitler’s nightmarish crown; Auschwitz-Birkenau. There, they were privileged to hear from Mr Leslie Kleinman BEM, an incredible and inspirational figure who survived a 600km death march from Birkenau to Sachsenhausen, eating grass and snow to sustain himself. The group shared tears of sadness and joy with Leslie as
together they sang the niggun he had sung as a young boy at the table of the Satmar Rebbe. Leslie then blessed the group and thanked them for playing their part in ensuring the continuation of the Jewish people. Reflecting on the trip, Rabbi Eli Birnbaum commented: “What made this trip unique was the intimate size of our group. It really allowed us the time and space to absorb the scale of the horrors committed in the name of racial purity. But more than this, it allowed us the scope to celebrate what once was, and what we – as young Jews living in relative freedom – can rebuild with pride and joy.”
Jacob smashes ‘13 Rubik’s challenge’ for Emunah BY SUE RIFKIN Thirteen-year-old Jacob Selwyn used his flying fingers to take on the challenge of completing 13 scrambled Rubik’s cubes and puzzles in less than 13 minutes while raising £2,300 for Emunah. His feat took place at his father’s workplace The Creative Clinic in Mill Hill, where remarkably, the Yavneh College student solved all 13 puzzles in just over 10 minutes. The challenge took place ahead of Jacob’s Bar Mitzvah at Borehamwood and Elstree United Synagogue, where his parents Adam and Joanna Selwyn, are members. Jacob said: “I took on the challenge because I know there are a lot of kids in Israel
who come from scrambled and messedup homes, who are less fortunate than me. Thanks to Emunah the money I have raised will mean better lives for neglected boys and girls my age.” British Emunah director Deborah Nathan who adjudicated the challenge said: “Well done Jacob for this super-original Bar Mitzvah twinning which was fantastic fun… Thanks to the help of your parents and the generosity of the Bar Mitzvah guests and other donors, the money raised will enable Emunah to support at-risk children through our centres and services in Israel.” Adam Selwyn added: “Jacob smashed his Rubik’s challenge and he was amazing in shul – we are incredibly proud.”

Kollel inspires packed audiences BY MORDECHAI ULLMANN
Shortly before Shavuos this year, the Kehillos of London and Manchester once again had the zechus to host the beloved Rosh Hakollel of one of Yerushalyim’s crowning Kollelim – Meor HaTorah. At both of the well-attended gatherings, supporters and admirers of the Kollel, heard divrei Chizuk from both the Rosh Hakollel and Rav Yehuda Leib Wittler. Rav Wittler, with whom the Kollel enjoys a particularly close
association, addressed the gatherings on the theme of Matan Torah. Rav Wittler discussed the Kiruv that Klal Yisroel enjoyed when encamping at Har Sinai, even prior to receiving the Torah, hence the thanksgiving we owe Hashem, “Ilu Keirvanu Lifnei Har Sinai” and quoted the Brisker Rav that the Mitzva to remember Har Sinai is to also recall the Kiruv we had from Hashem. This closeness, which culminated in the great Chasuna of Matan Torah, sheds tremendous light on

Talmud Potential at Kesher in Golders Green This past Monday, Kesher, the innovative outreach kehillah in Golders Green, hosted a new Talmud series in conjunction with the Professional’s Beis Medrash (PBM). Demand was so strong that it was necessary to cap the numbers at 20, to enable maximum interaction among all participants. Led with a winning combination of effervescence and sophistication by Rabbi Daniel Fine (of Hasmonean Beis and Stanmore Synagogue), the shiur has already begun to deliver on its promise to “Unlock Your Talmud Potential.” Educated, professional men from Northwest London and beyond flocked to acquire the skills of independent Torah learning via an expertly designed and structured
learning programme. Rabbi Rashi Simon, Rav of Kesher, with three decades of experience in teaching authentic Torah in a modern idiom to both beginners and yeshiva alumni, explained that “the success of Kesher is in empowering Jews of all backgrounds to bond with Torah and to engage with their heritage in a way which is sustainable, satisfying and inspiring.“ What better way to do pursue this goal than by discovering your “Talmud Potential”?
the entire gift that is the Torah and it is incumbent upon us to reciprocate that love. The guest speaker said that Rav Bergstein is one who truly lives for his Kollel and how wonderful is the zechus of supporting this esteemed Mosad. Rav Bergstein then addressed the audience and thanked the London host Dr David Landau and Manchester host Mr Chaim Davis, for opening the doors of their respective homes to assist the Kollel. This year’s gathering was especially poignant as it was dedicated in memory of the son of the Rosh Hakollel, Reb Refoel Chaim Bergstein. Rav Shimon spoke movingly of the Chesed that accompanied his son’s great hasmoda and said that it is hoped that in the zechus of his son, the Kollel will go from strength to strength. Meor HaTorah is home to tens of Avreichim, many of whom are from the UK. The Kollel regularly publishes high-standard Chiddushei Torah and many of its alumni have returned to England bringing much benefit to the Tzibbur.
Bushey New Cemetery wins award The United Synagogue’s Bushey New Cemetery has won a RIBA Regional Award at this year’s ceremony. The cemetery was designed by Waugh Thistleton and this honour follows last year’s Religion Award for a completed project at the World Architecture Festival. The RIBA is a global professional membership body driving excellence in architecture. The cemetery makes use of natural features and landscaping with an environmentally sensitive approach. Visitors to the new site will notice the creative use of a range of water features, flora and fauna. One interesting feature of the state-of-the-art prayer halls is their use of ‘rammed earth’ which utilises highly compressed natural materials to form walls which will then be clad with timber creating a thermally massive building – meaning
that the fabric of the halls will store heat in the cold and stay cool in the summer. Talking about the award, US Property Director, Lali Virdee said: “We are delighted that the New Bushey Cemetery has won another award which once again highlights the amount of hard work and thoughtfulness that has gone into ensuring that visitors to the cemetery have a meaningful experience.” Andrew Waugh, Director of Waugh Thistleton Architects, said: “We are very proud that New Bushey Cemetery has been awarded with one of the most prestigious architectural prizes in the UK. It’s a credit to the community; the support and encouragement that they have shown for architectural quality has been recognised.”

Israel70 exhibition launches in Israel in the presence of H.E. David Quarry, UK Ambassador to Israel A selection of work from the Israel 70 – Building Artistic Connections exhibition went on display at the at the Babylonian Jewry Heritage Centre in Israel. Six thousand five hundred pupils from 33 Jewish Primary and Secondary schools across submitted their contributions towards the second exhibition of the project, which first went on show at JW3 in London. The works will remain on show in Israel until 31st August. A coloured Hamsa
The art at the Israel Exhibition
Speaking at the opening of the exhibition at the Babylonian Jewry Heritage Centre, H.E. David Quarrey, UK Ambassador to Israel referenced his commitment to building artistic connections between Israel and the UK, made at the start of his mission, as well as his connections with Iraq, having previously directed the North East and North Africa Department at the Foreign Office. Run in conjunction with PaJeS and with the support of the JLC and the Genesis Philanthropy Group, coupled with generous sponsorship
by the World Zionist Organisation, the unique educational project saw the pupils involved examine and develop meaning journeys across history, culture, peoplehood and national pride of Israel. The aim of the international project, conceived by Nic Abery of LooktoLearn was to provide students with the opportunity to explore, connect and reflect upon the cultural, artistic and historical narratives of Israel via a selection of objects from nine Israeli museums. The project was made possible
thanks to the invaluable relationship that PaJeS has with Jewish schools of all denominations in the UK, further demonstrating their commitment to Israel education and the teaching of Jewish history in our schools and is in no small part down to the dedicated teachers who made Israel a part of pupils’ learning across almost all parts of the school curricula for the past two years. Students researched and selected a museum exhibit, from participating museums, cultural centres and historical sites, including the Israel Museum, sourced from either specialist catalogues, live skype lessons with museum curators, or bespoke lessons in their own schools. Speaking of her inspiration for the exhibition, Nic Abery said: “I wanted to give Jewish Primary and Secondary School students a meaningful way of marking Israel70. This project has given them a solid connection to living and breathing Israeli art, culture, history and heritage. I really hope many families and schools will
visit the exhibitions and celebrate the remarkable artistic and creative achievements of our students and Israel.” Rabbi David Meyer, Executive Director of PaJeS added: “The Israel70 project is a wonderful initiative that brings to life the rich history of Israel, the relevance it has to our community and the significance of Israel’s independence 70 years ago. It is a credit to Nic and the whole PaJeS team that children from across the UK and around the world are coming together to participate in this wonderful project.” Eran Berkovitz of the World Zionist Organisation commented: “The project and exhibition prove to us all that the way to connect the younger generation with a 70 year old state and a 2000 year old history is through a unique combination of art, history and culture.”

Nightingale House leads research enquiry into the impact of music on the care of older people Nightingale House has introduced a comprehensive programme to show the positive impact live music can have on the lives of older people in residential care settings, through lectures and workshops delivered by leading thinkers and policy-makers in the field of arts, health and wellbeing. In conjunction with Live Music Now, an organisation which works with a diverse range of people to create connections through music, and the London Arts in Health
Forum (LAHF), Nightingale House devised a schedule of activities to explore the contribution of live music to quality provision in adult social care. Workshop sessions focused on how to bring music to life in care homes, bridging the gap of social isolation through musical engagement, the development of the Playlist for Life Project and working with Nordoff Robbins, the largest independent music therapy charity in the UK. Activities at Nightingale House, said: “The conference is another example of our innovative music strategy, as part of our wider commitment to delivering person-centred care. Through our music programme, we have seen our residents come alive as the music aid communication. It creates life, energy and gives our residents a voice! The added bonus is that the relationships between staff and residents are strengthened as the music allows our staff to see each resident as a unique individual.” The conference is just one example of Nightingale House’s wider music strategy, directed by Head of Activities Alastair Addison, developed to enhance the lives of its residents as part of a holistic care programme. Last year, Nightingale House hosted Live Music Now musicians, including a vocalist and flutist, for a 10-week residency programme of musical engagement through which musicians worked with the same group of residents to lead on a journey of musical discovery Key-notes speakers included members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Arts Health

Studying this week’s sidrah, a simple question arises: what sin did the spies commit? They were commissioned to explore the Land and report what they saw, which is precisely what they did (see Devarim 1:23). Even when they reported that the inhabitants of the Land of Israel were extremely powerful, and that they could not imagine how the battle could be won, they were telling the truth, as we see from the fact that they were not accused by Calev or Yehoshua of lying. Why then were they punished?
“They arrived at the Valley of Eshkol and cut from there a vine with one cluster of grapes, and bore it on a double pole, and of the pomegranates and of the figs” (Bemidbar 13:23).

An explanation can be gleaned from a comment of Rashi (d. 1105), who asks why the account of the spies follows the section (at the end of last week’s parasha) which detailed Miriam’s punishment for speaking negatively about Moshe (Bemidbar 12:1-16). There seems to be no comparison between the severity of the sins, making the juxtaposition surprising. Rashi answers: “[the two sections are juxtaposed] because she [Miriam] was punished for slanderous speech about her brother [Moshe]; these wicked people [the spies] saw [what happened to her], but did not learn a lesson from it” (Rashi to 13:1).
What was Miriam’s transgression? It was not speaking about Moshe with bad intentions, for Rashi writes elsewhere that “she did not intend to speak negatively about him” (Rashi to Bemidbar 12:1). Rather, her mistake was that, if she could not understand why Moshe had separated from his wife, she should have asked him directly, rather than discussing the matter with her other brother. Her transgression was not that she intended to hurt Moshe, but something much more subtle: her speaking openly about sensitive issues that are prone to be misunderstood. This too played a role in the sin of the spies. Their mistake was twofold. Firstly, Moshe sent them to scout out the Land, not to deliver their own personal verdict on whether it could or could not be conquered, which was already guaranteed by G-d (see Shemot 23:20-27, 34:11, Devarim 1:30-33). Secondly, they did not express their concerns privately to Moshe, but rather aired them in public, thus providing the ‘fuel’ for a major rebellion. This error was particularly grave, considering that they had seen the punishment Miriam had received for committing a similar mistake. Therefore their punishment, explains Rashi, was severe because they “saw [what happened to her], but did not learn a lesson from it”.
In other words, it is true that “these wicked people” committed a sin of immense proportions, whereas Miriam’s sin was comparatively minor. Nevertheless, the Torah records both of them together to explain why the spies’ sin was indeed so severe – because they should have learned a lesson from Miriam. While the two sins differed greatly in gravity, they represented a similar mistake of judgment. After witnessing Miriam’s sin, and her subsequent punishment, the spies were irresponsible in allowing themselves to make a similar mistake.

HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN OR THE ROAD TO HELL? Dear Rabbi Does Judaism believe in the concepts of heaven and hell? Lenny Dear Lenny Yes, hell is when certain Chazzanim get up to sing and some Rabbis get up to sermonise. Heaven is when the service is over and the fishballs beckon. More precisely, Judaism doesn’t believe in hell the way it is typically perceived. Even as there is a concept of purgatory, we don’t believe in some kind of eternal fire, red devils and pitchforks. Needless to say, if one has “dirty clothes” these have to be cleansed before presenting oneself before the King. So, subject to one’s actions here on earth – the black marks that might pile up have to be cleansed – or purged if you will, before basking eternal in Divine euphoria.
But there is another understanding of “hell” in this context as well. Depending on your actions in this world, you will either experience a tinge of pride or you will be left feeling highly embarrassed. That tinge of pride is what we might call heaven and whatever embarrassment endured is what could be hell. In that world of absolute justness and perfection not only can you not try to explain away the truth of your actions – you won’t want to. Truth is the only absolute in that realm. Take a minute and think of the most embarrassing moment – or one of the worst things you might have done in your life. Now imagine putting it on video for everyone to watch – you’d want to disappear. This is, in mystical terms busha - a deep sense of shame. It’s Hell! And the worst part about it is you cannot leave the room or turn the other way. There’s nowhere to run!
Tehillim This week’s Psalm is the last in the section for day nine. When a person is unfortunately betrayed by loved ones and pursued by enemies, one must pray to Hashem for salvation. King David was betrayed by members of the ‘Zephites,’ who were members of David’s own tribe. They revealed his hiding place to King Saul and David just narrowly escaped death. ‘Elokim, bshimcha hosheani, uvigvuratcha tsudinene – O G-d, by Your Name save me, and by Your might, vindicate me.’ When someone is in mortal peril, especially after a supposed friend has turned on them, they will truly see Hashem’s might when they
Psalm 54
are ultimately vindicated. Every day, we see miracles, but the Yetzer Harah belittles them. The fact that we breathe is truly miraculous; just watch someone who is struggling to breath, and one can instantly realise how grateful they are to Hashem. However, part of the ploy of our evil nature is to constantly downgrade everything, in order to trap a person to continue to sin. That was how the generation of the Midbar managed to sin, straight after seeing the sea split, it was downgraded in their eyes. May we take the lesson to heart and learn to truly appreciate Hashem for each and every miracle that he performs for us every single day.
But when you’re applauded for all the good you will have done, then you will feel a deep sense of blissfulness – and that is heaven. Finally, there is one other point to consider: It’s not just about the commissions of your life – the things you did wrong that are now being replayed. It is every bit and perhaps on some level even more so about the omissions. Imagine buying a lottery ticket each week and you play the same numbers each time. One week you choose not to buy one and that is the week in which those numbers come up. How would that make you feel? There’s nothing you can do about it now – that feeling will crush you. Multiply that by an infinite amount and you’ll get something, though hardly much of an idea of what you will feel when they show you two images upstairs. An image of what you became and an image of what you could have become.

Each of us has a preordained destiny. G-d has a Master plan and created each of us unique with our own intended goals, purposes and missions. If you look back on your life and realise that at a certain interval you could have become CEO of the company, but because you chose to make a wrong turn, you ended up in the mail room – well there’s no turning back the clock on that. And that hurts – that’s hell. So, get busy doing good. The clock is ticking. Heaven awaits. FINDING MS. RIGHT Dear Rabbi I am 35 years old and can’t get married. Can you help me? It’s like I have no luck! Arthur Dear Arthur Sorry, I’m already spoken for! But here’s a little piece of advice: With an attitude like ‘I have no luck,’ you’re never going to get very far. Every time you go out you’ll be immediately assuming the worst and will panic at every blip. Your mindset can impact and indeed create your own reality. With a negative disposition you will invariably struggle. If you maintain a positive attitude, believe that you do have luck and keep an open mind, you’ll find Ms right sooner than you know it. Good luck! SYNAGOGUE KILTS
Dear Rabbi My husband attended our local United Synagogue and was surprised to see boys playing football after the service on Shabbat. This is new to me! Also we know ladies are not allowed to wear trousers in synagogue, so could
a Scottish relation come to a Bar Mitzvah or any service, dressed up in a kilt. Judith Dear Judith I’d be surprised if the rabbi was in goal – but otherwise it’s not too much of a big deal. Maybe not a suitable post-service activity, but as long as it is within the confines of an enclosed space, or more broadly speaking, within the confines of an Eruv, well, boys will be boys! As for the kilt – I’m going to go out on a limb and safely assume that they don’t wear them to synagogue in Scotland either. WHAT’S IN A NAME? Dear Rabbi Is Lenderman a Jewish name? I keep arguing with a friend about its origins. It is known to come from the Lower Rhine since ancient times. But he says that it is Jewish and that “Lender” “Man” likely meant they were some kind of lenders or bankers. When I ask other people with the same last name they reply it’s German and has always been. My friend looked it up on the internet and sure enough found some people with the name who were Jewish. And now I am all confused. I even looked on HouseofNames.com and they said it is German. My friend’s name is Friedman and the same website says it’s Jewish/German. But Lenderman it lists as just German. What do you think? Lenderman Dear Lenderman Arguing with your friend – searching the internet – what do I think? I think you have too much time on your hands. I really hope you don’t lose too much sleep over this (though I nearly dozed half way through the question). Hey, you’re Jewish and the name is yours – so consider it a Jewish name henceforth. And spend your time on more productive things.

Argentina pull out of World Cup warm up game against Israel BY DAVID SAFFER Argentina have pulled out of a sold-out World Cup friendly against Israel at the Teddy Kollek Stadium in Jerusalem on Saturday following ongoing pressure from pro-Palestinian groups. There have also been claims of threats against star player Lionel Messi. Jibril Rajoub, Palestinian Football Association head, has led a vocal political campaign to cancel the game, claiming it would be played on “occupied land” and had encouraged fans to burn shirts bearing Messi’s name if he played. The controversial decision has been slammed by Israeli politicians and global Jewish organisations. The Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires blamed “threats and provocations” against superstar Messi whilst Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly urged Argentine President Mauricio Macri to intervene. “It’s unfortunate the soccer knights of Argentina did not withstand the pressure of the Israeli-hating inciters, whose only goal is to harm our basic right to self-defense and bring about the destruction of Israel,” noted Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman. “We will not yield before a pack of anti-Semitic terrorist supporters,”
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin described the decision as a “sad morning for Israeli sports fans”, including his own grandchildren. He added, “There are values that are greater than even Messi. The politicisation of the Argentinean move worries me greatly,” he said. Israel’s embassy in Argentina confirmed the match was off as reports spread through the Argentine media. “The Israeli embassy is sad to announce the suspension of the match between the Israel and Argentina national teams scheduled for Saturday 9 June, as a warm-up for the Russia World Cup,” the statement said. Palestinian officials celebrated the postponement. “The will of values, ethics and the message of sport had triumphed today, and the red card had been lifted in Israel’s face by cancelling this match,” they said in a statement. Demonstrations against the friendly have taken place in Argentina and Spain where the squad is currently based at a training camp in preparation for tournament that begins on 14 June. Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie said that some of the players “were not willing to play,” and Argentine media reported some members of the squad had received death threats.
Striker Gonzalo Higuaín told ESPN “They’ve finally done the right thing. Rationale and health come before everything else. We think it’s best not go to Israel.” Team manager Jorge Sampaoli noted travel logistics may have played a part in the decision as he had preferred to play in Barcelona from a “sporting point of view”. World Jewish Congress quickly voiced its deep concern at the news at dismay at the decision. “This is nothing short of incitement to terror against the players and their teams, which must be dealt with immediately and seriously,” WJC said in a statement. “Politics have no place on the football field and terror has no place in our society.” In what is still an evolving story, neither side has issued an official announcement, but reports indicate the Argentine FA convened an emergency meeting to address concerns over player and fan security for the game. Luke Akehurst, We Believe in Israel added, “Israel and Argentina have a long tradition of pre-world cup friendlies so it is very sad to see it cancelled at such short notice. “The match was politicised by Palestinian leaders in stark violent language and this led to demonstrations and death threats against the Argentinian players and their
Argentina football team
families. So I don’t blame the players for being afraid and opting for safety, but it would be unacceptable if similar tactics are deployed in future against other sports teams. “It is of course ironic that Argentina has chosen not to play in Jerusalem, the capital of the Middle East’s only democracy and the only city in the Middle East where all faiths are free to worship at their holy sites. Yet they have no issue whosoever playing in Russia.” The match was originally to be played in Haifa but the Ministry for Culture and Sport encouraged it to be moved to Jerusalem as part
of the Israel 70 celebrations. The postponement of the clash means Israeli football followers will now not see arguably the best player on the planet display his skills. Messi leads his team in Russia and was set to play this weekend as his country bid for a third World Cup triumph. Argentina have been drawn in Group D where they face Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria. For Sampaoli, the cancellation has thrown World Cup preparations into chaos as it would have been their final warm up game prior to the finals.

Speaking about the appointment, Hammé said, “We have a really strong squad heading into the competition, the morale around the team is great. “It’s important we maintain this heading into the tournament as a strong chemistry within the team will put us in a great position heading into the tournament.” Sapler added, “I have no doubt that if we play to our potential we will return home with medals.” Great Britain, who hosted the

BY MARC OVITS Predicting where the UK stock market will go next is as hazardous as forecasting the weather. Few would have prophesied that a cold snap dubbed Beast from the East
would show up in retailer results as the primary culprit for poor sales. Likewise, with economic growth near standstill, together with the ongoing Brexit shambles and carnage on the high street, no one expected the FTSE 100 to be marching towards 8,000 when just a few weeks ago it passed 7,000 going in the opposite direction. Investor sentiment is as fickle as the weather — from optimism in January to negativity in February and March and back again. Take a look at a graph of the FTSE All-Share and the yo-yoing is clear. The turning point came on March 26. Since then, and until mid-May, the FTSE All Share rose 445 points, about 12 per cent. Here’s the rub, though: just 10 stocks accounted for more than half of that rise (229 points of the 445) and I list these below. Ten stocks powering the rise in the FTSE All-Share Investors seem to be turning defensive, which some will say shows the bull market is maturing. Higher quality defensive stocks such as pharmaceuticals and big-brand consumer staples tend to do well in the latter stages of a cycle. Others argue that this rotation to quality is premature, noting that bond yields are going up — a sign that the economy is improving while monetary policy remains supportive.
Company Royal Dutch Shell (A and B shares) BP HSBC Shire GlaxoSmithKline Rio Tinto Diageo BHP Billiton AstraZeneca Unilever
With domestic stocks in the bargain bin and large-cap defensives accounting for the bulk of the FTSE’s rise, rushing to safety too soon could be costly. This is a tale of two markets: expensive international earners and cheap domestic equities. There couldn’t be a worse time to settle for a UK tracker or exchange traded fund, which by design will be weighted with the largest companies in the index. In the UK, this means piling into expensive consumer staples and the commodity giants. Put differently, it is a stock picker’s paradise. It is often mentioned that about 80 per cent of combined FTSE 100 revenues is generated overseas. What can surprise investors is that half of FTSE 250 revenues also comes from outside the UK. Competitively priced mid-cap cyclicals with international exposure may provide a reprieve if the UK’s political situation is pushing you towards pricey defensive

growth stocks. Nearly two years after the referendum, a government at war with itself has led to a lack of visibility and certainty for consumers and businesses. As one investor put it to me: “Brexit worries aren’t going away, so cheap on its own isn’t good enough.” Britain’s FTSE 100, the benchmark index of oil companies and dollar earners, has been carried ever higher by oil hitting $80 a barrel and sterling weakness. Elevated oil prices, however, hurt the consumer and the risk is that the rise becomes a tax on growth, undermining the market rally. A slump in oil prices last Friday has already taken its toll, limiting the gains of Britain’s blue-chip index. Back to the weather. Many UK retailers and leisure groups might blame the Beast from the East for poor results, but Next has been immune to the chill, enjoying a website boost. Snowed-in shoppers did not stop

spending: they simply hunted for bargains from the sofa. This underscores the weakness of the “blame the weather” argument. Yes, it affects footfall but it also shows why online propositions need to be watertight. Yet there is little doubt that retailers are having to contend with structural changes. To find value, investors need to consider the effect of these changes. Nowhere is this more evident than retail, where rumours of the death of the UK consumer have been greatly exaggerated. Granted, we are more cost-conscious but we’re spending differently, not necessarily less. This shift may be obvious in your bank statements. Home telecoms and entertainment bills have gone up — look at the subscriptions to Sky, Netflix and Amazon Prime, topped up with the odd movie and, perhaps, another season of Peppa Pig. The temptation for many to buy on digital platforms is never far away — and let’s not even start on the cost of my mobile phone, various app subscriptions and my Uber bill. Many people have takeaways or online gaming as part of their monthly household budgets. Stock picking is usually best left to people who have the time, expertise and the resource to do it justice. Financial advisers can you select the funds which over time have proved to be winners.

Parshat Shelach Lecha Moshe sends twelve spies to the Land of Canaan (Israel) to see what the land and its people are like. The spies tour the whole land and when they come back after forty days they tell the people that it is indeed a land “flowing with milk and honey.” But, they add, the people in it are very strong and the cities have huge walls like fortresses, and “we even saw giants.” Thet tell the Jews that the land would be much too difficult to conquer. Even though two of the spies, Yehoshua and Calev, disagree with the rest, saying that the land is very good and they can surely conquer it, the Jews believe those with the bad report, and they cry out to Moshe that they don’t want to go and go back to Egypt. Hashem is very upset with the people who complained and tells Moshe to tell the people that they would have to stay in the desert for forty years instead of going into the Land of Israel, they realise what a horrible mistake they had made and are very sad. We learn about the mitzvah of Challah, when we bake bread or a large amount of cake or biscuits a portion of it must go to G d. Today, when we don’t have a Beit Hamikdash (Holy Temple), we make sure to cover and burn a piece of the dough before baking the bread. We also learn that a man who gathers wood on Shabbat, desecrating it, is put to death and from this we learn the importance of keeping Shabbat. We learn about the mitzvah of men wearing tiztzit, fringes worn on the corners of a four-cornered garment. When we see the fringes, we remember who we are and all the 613 mitzvot that G d has commanded us.

and roll into balls, transferring each ball to a lined tray or plate, push a lollipop stick into each, then put into the fridge for an hour to set.
1. Heat oven to 170 C. Grease and line the base of a 20cm sandwich tin. Place the
butter, sugar and vanilla extract into a bowl and beat well to a creamy consistency. Slowly beat in the eggs, one by one, then fold in the flour and mix well. Tip into the cake tin and bake for about 20 mins until risen and golden brown. Set aside to cool completely.
3. Melt the white chocolate in the microwave, blasting it
2. While the cakes are cooling, make the buttercream. In a large bowl or the bowl of
stand mixer, beat the butter and icing sugar together until smooth, add the vanilla extract and milk and beat again. Once the cake is cooled, crumble into large crumbs. Add the butter cream and stir together. Take chunks of the cake mixture

Take each of the chilled cake pops and dip into the white chocolate, allowing it to drip off a little over the bowl. Dip into the sprinkles, then stand upright in a mug to dry at room temperature for an hour, or in the fridge for 30 mins.

In a nutshell Moshe sends twelve spies (one from each tribe of Israel) to the land of Canaan. Forty days later they return, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, to report on a lush and bountiful land. They show the people the magnificent fruits they brought, and say: “We came to the land where you sent us, and indeed it flows with milk and honey; and this is its fruit.
“But the people that dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw the giants there. Ten of the spies continue to warn that the inhabitants of the land are giants and warriors “more powerful than we”. Only Calev and Yehoshua insist that the land can be conquered, as G-d has commanded. The people weep that they’d rather
return to Egypt. G-d decrees that Israel’s entry into the Land shall be delayed forty years, during which time that entire generation will die out in the desert. A group of remorseful Jews storm the mountain on the border of the Land, and are routed by the Amalekites and Canaanites. The laws of the menachot (meal, wine and oil offerings) are given, as
well as the mitzvah to consecrate a portion of the challah to G-d when making bread. A man violates the Shabbat by gathering sticks, and is put to death. This week we also learn about the mitzvah of tzitzit which are placed on the four corners of men’s garments, which are worn as a constant reminder to all the mitzvot that Hashem had commanded us to do.

TIME TRAVELLER FROM YEAR 6491 STUCK IN 2018
A time traveler who claims he is stuck in the year 2018 because his time machine broke has reportedly passed a lie detector test. James Oliver says he was on a mission in the 21st century from the year 6491, but is unable to get home to his family and friends. It sounds too crazy to believe. Paranormal YouTube site ApexTV hooked him up to a lie detector test and claims he passed every question. His face is blurred out and his
accent is a thick Birmingham one, which can sometimes sound American or Australian, and he has a slight lisp. There is some obscurity as to whether he lives on planet earth or another planet, as he adds: “Where I’m from, the years are longer. “My planet is further away from the sun than yours is, so it takes longer to get around.” One may be left to wonder whether lie detector tests are all they are cracked up to be, as this is very hard to believe.
A ROYAL BAKE The Queen does as she pleases. It’s why she always has a slice of her favourite cake nearby. Her Majesty’s choice? A chocolate biscuit cake. Homemade. Whenever she travels, be it train, car, or plane, there’s always one to hand, just in case she gets peckish and fancies a treat. The cake, along with her patent black Launer handbag, are two things the Queen never leaves one of her palaces without. The adoration was revealed by former royal chef Darren McGrady. He cooked for the royal family for 15 years, and revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that the monarch likes to make sure she’s never too far from a slice of chocolate biscuit cake. Darren also recently said that the Queen isn’t a big fan of potatoes, pasta, and garlic. He had to be meticulous in his
stadium. Clearly tired – or just a little dim – the bird misjudged the height of Comerica Park and smashed into an LED advertising board. It then fell two levels down and flopped into an empty seating area in a flurry of feathers. Video of the goose was captured by sports channels and soon #RallyGoose was trending on social media. In the end, a vet was called who wrapped the stricken intruder in a blanket and
menu options – and one matter of importance was organising the cake. Apparently, Her Majesty is so fond of the pudding that when travelling, she asks for a senior sous chef to accompany it for the journey duration. Darren said: “Now the chocolate biscuit cake is the only cake that goes back again and again and again everyday until it’s all gone.
“She’ll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake.” The chef added that the Queen likes to have a piece of the cake every day. And it runs in the family. Prince William and Prince Harry are also big fans. Wills even recreated it for his wedding to Kate Middleton.
SMELLY LANDING FOR PASSENGERS
YOU SILLY GOOSE A silly goose crashed a Major League Baseball game in Detroit on Wednesday night and then flew directly into a billboard and fell out of the sky while trying to escape. The Canadian goose had made itself comfortable on the field at Comerica Park in Detroit, US, during a rain delay. The Detroit Tigers were playing the Los Angeles Angels. Initial attempts to capture the goose ended in chaos, with the animal much too quick for chasing men. Eventually, however, the goose seemed to realise it needed to get out of the way, so tried to fly out of the

took it away. The goose was not harmed and released back into some bushes outside. Video of the goose’s exciting appearance was captured by Fox Sports Detroit. Goose dealt with, the Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-1. A silly, but a lucky goose.
A Boeing 737 was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger’s “unbearable” body odour caused other holiday-makers around him to faint. The man smelt so bad other passengers started to faint after the flight took off from Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands. Staff on board the Transavia service reportedly tried to quarantine him in a toilet of the Boeing 737 before the pilots were forced to divert the flight. A picture taken by one of the passengers shows medical personnel escorting the man from the airplane into a bus. Transavia confirmed the emergency landing saying it was due to “medical reasons”. It is not known if the medical reasons related to the man or other

passengers on the plane who were ill due to the stench. A passenger said: “The airplane diverted because of medical reasons, but it is indeed right that he smelled quite a bit.” Bizarrely, it was not the first smelly incident on a Transavia flight this year. In February, a Transavia plane from Dubai to Amsterdam was forced to make an emergency landing in the Austrian capital of Vienna.

Marthe was Born in Metz, France in 1920
BY LARA ROSENFELDER
Winston Churchill once famously said, “I never worry about action, but only inaction”. It is a sentiment that seems to have been shared by Marthe Cohn, who risked her life to act as a spy for the allies in Nazi Germany. Indeed, it is not the only thing that she has in common with Winston Churchill. Now 98, she has amassed a plethora of medals, including the Croix De Guerre, a commendation for bravery in wartime and the Medaille Militaire, France’s most prestigious military honour, both of which she and Churchill were awarded. Born in Metz, France in 1920, she and her family were relocated to Poitier in 1939. Marthe was one of seven children in a closeknit family. Her grandfather had been the devout and highly respected rabbi of the Orthodox shul in Metz. In 1940, the Germans invaded Poitier and on 17 June 1942, a date which is forever etched in Marthe’s mind, one of her

adored sisters was arrested by the Germans. She and her sister had been collaborating with a local French non-Jewish farmer. Hundreds of people would knock on Marthe’s family home on a daily basis with entreaties for help. For various reasons, these people were at risk of being killed if they were discovered to be in Nazioccupied France. Many of them were American or English pilots for example, whose planes had been shot down by Nazi warfare, or prisoners of war who had somehow managed to escape. The vast majority of those seeking aid did not speak French and would have immediately come under suspicion by the Gestapo. Marthe and her sister would direct those in need of an escape route to the home of the farmer with whom they were acquainted. His property was strategically situated partially in occupied France and partially in nonoccupied France. It provided an ideal means of averting the enemy. However, one of the escapees had unwittingly left a voucher in Marthe’s home and her sister sent it by letter to the farmer in order to return it to its rightful owner. Accidentally, she had forgotten the golden rule that all letters to the farmer’s home should have been signed using a pseudonym. Her mistake was to cost her dearly and she was imprisoned due to her lack of cooperation with the Nazis who
MARTHE COHN
had intercepted her missive. She steadfastly refused to divulge the name of the farmer who had been saving hundreds of lives. Due to her piety and loyalty, the farmer’s identity remained hidden from the Germans. He survived the war and was awarded the approbation of “Righteous Among the Nations” by Yad Vashem. Devastated by her sister’s eventual incarceration in a camp, Marthe devised a plan of escape. However, her sister was adamant that she would not forsake the children of the camp for whom she had been caring with her considerable expertise as a medical student. She also maintained that were she to flee, the Gestapo would hound her entire family. Tragically, this angelic young lady, who celebrated her 21st birthday in a Nazi concentration camp, was ultimately dispatched to Auschwitz where she ended her days. Catastrophically, Marthe’s fiancé also lost his life in horrific circumstances. In 1943, he was tortured and executed for his involvement with the French Resistance. As a consequence of his untimely demise and her sister’s captivity, she resolved to do everything in her power to vanquish the Nazi nemesis. She qualified as a nurse and moved to Paris to live with one of her sisters. In August 1944, after the liberation of Paris, she applied for a position in the French army. However, the
army sought proof that she was not a German collaborator. The mother of her deceased fiancé, now living with Marthe and her sister after the loss of her son and his brother, vouched for Marthe’s integrity. Since both her sons had been hailed as heroes and had died patriotic deaths, her recommendation was sufficient for the army to accept Marthe. At Alsace on the front lines, Marthe was initially assigned the role of “Social Worker”. The officer who interviewed her was unimpressed by the fact that she had not belonged to a resistance group though she tried to explain that a blond, slim, blue-eyed girl of less than five foot, would not have been taken seriously by any resistance faction. When he demanded why she had not attempted to kill Nazis on an individual vigilante basis, she responded that as a nurse, she instinctively recoiled at the prospect of killing even Nazis whom she vehemently loathed. When it transpired that she spoke German fluently, she was offered a position in the intelligence section of the army and underwent intensive training in this regard. Since all German men were relegated to the army, any man appearing in Germany in civilian clothing would have been arrested on suspicion of being a spy. It was therefore imperative that the spy be a female. Marthe’s alibi was that she was seeking her fiancé, a German
prisoner of war captured by the allies. Indeed, the allies forced a genuine German prisoner of war to pen letters to Marthe in which he declared his affection for her. In reality, the two had never met but his letters lent a great degree of authenticity to her cover story and her forged ID card. Whilst in Germany as a nurse, the priceless nuggets of information gleaned by Marthe shortened the war as she revealed to the allies that northwest of Freiburg, the Siegfried Line had been evacuated and that the remnant of the German Army laid in ambush in the Black Forest. Her courage was recognised by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s epithet “Woman of Valour”.
Now residing in America with her husband, she is the subject of a future film and is a popular public speaker anxious that the Holocaust be remembered. To paraphrase Eshet Chayil, “Many women have performed valiant deeds, but you, Marthe, have surpassed them all.”
