Dear Reader, Jewish Child’s Day has proudly been transforming the lives of Jewish children in need for over 75 years. Since our establishment in 1947, we have supported over 1.5 million vulnerable children across the UK, Israel and other smaller communities around the world, making a significant difference to their lives. In recognition of our Heritage year, we are looking to make an even greater impact on the lives of thousands of Jewish children in need, from those who have just been born to those who are 18 and approaching adulthood.
Y E ARS OF
Our support knows no bounds. Transforming the lives of children in need We work closely with organisations around the world to identify their most urgent funding requirements and ensure the grants we award go to the children and young people who need it most. Many of these organisations rely heavily on us to bridge the gap where they have limited resources to raise these vital funds themselves. In 2021, Jewish Child’s Day distributed grants across the following key categories:
Through grant funding, Jewish Child’s Day provides vital support to children who are challenged by physical, learning or emotional difficulties; children who have been abused, neglected, deprived or disadvantaged, children who don’t have a safe and secure family or home, and those who are battling severe illness. From funding medical equipment such as wheelchairs and aided walkers, to hospice rooms for children who are terminally ill, to 1:1 occupational therapy, literacy support and after school clubs, Jewish Child’s Day is here to transform lives.
Since the start of the pandemic, we have seen our grant applications double, while the costs our partners face to provide their specialised care for children has increased as a result of Covid-19, the ongoing war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis. Now, more than ever, it is essential that Jewish Child’s Day can continue to support the children who need us most. We are launching our ‘Transforming Lives’ Match Giving Campaign on Sunday 19th June for 36 hours to do just that. We ask for your generous support to ensure we can continue helping as many vulnerable Jewish children as possible.
Through the generosity of our donors and the Jewish community, we hope to be able to reach even more children, across even more projects, in even more countries around the world. Thank you in advance for your generosity,
Anthea Jackson Executive Director, Jewish Child’s Day

Israel has issued its highest travel warning of a “real threat” to Israelis in Turkey. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will unleash Israel’s full power to protect its citizens abroad. His stark comments on Monday came after Foreign Minister Yair Lapid told Israelis in Istanbul to leave the country “as soon as possible” following Iranian threats to Israeli interests. “The security wings of the State of Israel are doing everything to thwart such attacks and neutralise those who send (the terrorists) in advance.” Bennett said at a memorial service for victims of the 1982 Lebanon War. “We will not Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hesitate to use the power there,” he said. of the State of Israel anywhere in “Israeli security agencies, the the world, for the protection of our Foreign Ministry and Prime Mincitizens.” ister’s Office have all teamed up in Istanbul has an alert rating of 4 recent weeks in a major operation with Iran, Afghanistan, Burkina that has saved the lives of IsraeFaso. lis. Biden confirms Israel trip Lauder slams UN enquiry BY ADAM MOSES
US President Joe Biden has confirmed his official visit to Israel next month (July 13-15). This is Biden’s first state trip to the Middle East as president. He will hold talks with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and President Isaac Herzog on the opening day. Biden in a busy schedule will visit the Yad Vashem and President Biden meet Jewish athletes at the Maccabiah Games. Bennett said Biden's visit would deepen a “special relationship and strategic partnership”. It would also strengthen the US commitment to the security and stability of Israel and region. Biden will also hold talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem on the final day of his trip. And he will meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Jordan's King Abdullah II and Gulf Cooperation Council leaders. Biden’s Saudi Arabia stop is a key element as he hopes to secure an aviation deal for Israeli commercial flights to use Saudi
airspace to the east. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid welcomed the move as it would help develop USSaudi relations. "The fact that the president is going to fly directly from here to Saudi Arabia is probably signifying that there is a linkage between the visit and the ability to improve relations," he told a news conference in Jerusalem PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK yesterday. Israeli leaders are looking to build on the quartet of Arab states, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, Israel has ties with following the Abraham Accords. "There is a list of target countries, Saudi is first among them, along with other nations such as Indonesia," Lapid told reporters. Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have official diplomatic relations but share security issues on Iran. Regarding the Iranian regime, Lapid said all parties recognised a regional nuclear arms race "is in nobody's interest." "We are trying to put Iran under siege both security-wise and policy-wise," Lapid added said.

World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder has condemned a UN Human Rights Council Commission of Inquiry on Israel. Lauder blasted the report this week as it reflected an anti-Israel bias. The WJC chief was critical that there was no mention of terror group Hamas who continually advocate the destruction of Israel. “The latest attack on Israel from the UN Human Rights Council, a UN body that contains a standing agenda item against only one country in the world, must be condemned by all and retracted in full,” he said. “A commission that claims to be addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but fails to mention Hamas in its founding resolution cannot be taken seriously.” Lauder thanked US President Joe Biden’s White House administration for its leadership and other nations that condemned the commission over anti-Israel rhetoric. The WJC head said that opposing Israel for defending its citizens while discounting terrorist organisations that threaten them is not legitimate. “The existence of the Commission of Inquiry on Israel itself speaks to the body’s biases and perpetuates a false narrative that distorts the facts and blindly ignores Palestinian terrorism that targets civilians,” Lauder noted. “As a group of UN Special Rapporteurs recently cautioned,

inflammatory rhetoric during spikes of violence in the Middle East could lead Jewish persons and sites to be subjected to violence, discrimination and harassment.” He added, “On behalf of the WJC, I echo this concern and call on the UN Human Rights Council to disband this fatally flawed Commission of Inquiry. Maligning and isolating Israel on the international stage, as the commission attempts to do, will not bring peace.” Lauder concluded that peace will come when there is recognition the existence of the Jewish state is “undebatable” by all parties.

Sheffield South Yorkshire Police are investigating an arson attack on a Jewish cemetery in Doncaster last Shabbat but antisemitism has been ruled out. Police responded to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service at Rose Hill Crematorium after a fire was started deliberately. Police described the incident as anti-social behaviour. Rabbi Yonosan Golomb of the United Synagogue said, “The fire, if an antisemitic arson attack, is an indication of to what level such people will sink in desecrating the resting place of the deceased.” A Jewish community member told Campaign Against Antisemitism he was mystified by the decision.

Europe looks to Israel for gas supplies BY DAVID SAFFER
European Union countries could boost its gas supplies from Israel in the wake of the war in Ukraine. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi outlined the potential in meetings with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett in Jerusalem this week. “The Kremlin has used our dependency on Russian fossil fuels to blackmail us,” von der Leyen told delegates at Ben Gurion University where she received an honorary doctorate. “Since the beginning of the war, Russia has deliberately cut off its gas supplies to Poland, Bulgaria and Finland, and Dutch and Danish companies, in retaliation for our support to Ukraine.” Russia’s actions, the EC leader said, had strengthened the resolve to “break free of our dependence on Russian fossil fuels”. The EU is “exploring ways to step up our energy cooperation with Israel” through an underwater power cable and gas pipeline in eastern Mediterranean. The prospect would require major infrastructure investment but with Israel exporting gas to Egypt there is potential to supply Europe. Talks have been ongoing since March for a route from Israel to Europe via Egypt. Another option is the EastMed project with a pipeline from Israel to Greece and

being considered. Draghi said Italy and Israel were working together on gas resources and development of renewable energy “We want to reduce our dependence on Russian gas and accelerate the energy transition towards the climate goals we have set ourselves,” Draghi noted. “Europe needs energy and Israel has natural gas in our economic waters,” Bennett said. “This is good news for Israel, Italy and Europe. We discussed the cooperation necessary to ensure that Israel’s natural gas can also be used in Europe.” But Israel’s relations with Lebanon are central to this aspiration. Bennett noted, “I look forward to the day when Lebanon decides that it is willing to take advantage of the natural gas in its economic waters. It is a pity that the leadership in Lebanon is dealing with unnecessary disputes instead of producing gas for the benefit of its citizens. I suggest the Lebanese government seize the opportunity to improve its economy and build a better future for the Lebanese people.” Bennett welcomed Europe’s need for alternative gas supplies following his meeting with von der Leyen on Tuesday. “It’s time for the international community to work together,” noted Israel’s leader. “Israel went from being a gas importer to becoming a gas exporter. And we’re currently working to produce natural gas from Israel’s economic waters.” The leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations between Israel and Europe. And agreed to enhance cooperation in innovation, climate change and sustainability. Regarding the war in Ukraine, Bennett said it had resulted in “vast global implications”. Bennett and von der Leyen also talked about Iran’s actions in the region. And Bennett commended EU leaders for censuring Iran at the International Atomic Energy

Agency. “Iran’s belligerent actions should be a wake-up call for the international community and should be met with clear and strong consequences, increased pressure and holding Iran accountable at the UN Security Council,” he said. “The only way for Iran to be stopped is if we act and stop them.” Bennett added, “Israel and the EU are natural partners, thank you for being a partner in this new chapter of relations between Israel and Europe.” “Israel and Europe are on a very strong and positive trajectory,” he continued. “Trade, innovation and economic cooperation are soaring. We’re witnessing our partnership reach new heights. Europe is in the hands of leaders who understand the weight and responsibility and take firm action in the face of antisemitism.” Bennett and Draghi also discussed cooperation between the nations, the Ukrainian war, global food crisis and cooperation on energy. “Our two nations are heirs to the principles and ideals of their ancestral roots,” he said, adding that both nations had made “significant contributions” to the advancement of civilization and society. Bennett continued, “We’re privileged to lead these great nations to success. We both came to be Prime Ministers in an unconventional way and both lead unique governments unprecedented in Israel or Italy.” Bennett said Israel and Italy had restored economic stability. “We’re both determined to act with pragmatism and conviction for the prosperity and security of our peoples,” he noted. The leaders have agreed to hold a G2G in Israel potentially this year. “I think that this is a very important step,” said the Israeli leader. Bennett thanked Draghi for his stance on antisemitism and strong partnership with the State of Israel.

CER establishes international division BY SIMCHA ABIR
The Conference of European Rabbis is to support rabbis in the Americas, Asia and Africa in a ground-breaking initiative through the new International Division. Rabbis outside Europe, notably Latin America and Middle East, have enquired about the services of the CER to European rabbis in recent years. Latin America initially made the request at the CER Convention in Antwerp three years ago 2019. The United Arab Emirates has experienced growth with new synagogues, kosher restaurants and Jewish community centres opening with the onset of the Abraham Accords. During the recent 32nd Convention of the CER in Munich rabbis discussed the way ahead for the regions. The conversation included Chief Rabbis and leading rabbis of many countries including Argentina, Azerbaijan, Chile, Georgia, Guatemala, Morocco, Panama and Uruguay. JCORE merges with HIAS
Rabbi David Yosef of Israel will oversee the new division. Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt stated “This is a truly historic moment for the CER. We are expanding our support to South America and the Gulf States. Wherever Rabbis request our help we will aid them. We are proud to play our part in strengthening and celebrating Jewish life in Europe and in other communities around the World who have sought our help and expertise. It stands as a testament not just to the organisational strength of the CER, that has supported and advocated for European Jewry for over half a century, but also, thank G-d, to the flourishing of Jewish communities worldwide.” 20 Rabbis from 17 countries in the Middle East and South America will be supported in Beth Din procedures, religious training and outreach opportunities. Gady Gronich, CEO and Chief of Staff to the CER and Rabbi Aharon Baskin of the CER, will run operations. Aharon Kotler, President Emeritus at Beth Medrash Govoha, has been involved in forming the division. He is aiming to establish more kollelim in both the division.
JCORE and HIAS have merged this week. The decision was taken before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but against the backdrop of the worst refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War. The merger offers an enhanced response to those affected. The organisations have long histories of supporting refugees and asylum seekers. The UK Jewish response to asylum, refugees and racial equality will continue within the Jewish community through strengthening education of young Jews on racial equality, introducing HIAS’ Welcome Campaign to UK synagogues and expanding the network to congregations in the US. Beyond the Jewish community, the merger will further support programmes including JCORE’s befriending project for unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people (JUMP) and Refugee Doctors mentoring. Dr Edie Friedman, Executive Director of JCORE, founded the organisation over 45 years ago and will become Honorary President. A search is underway for a Chief Executive to rebrand. A new name will be announced. A major event in the autumn will present the collaboration. Friedman said, “We have helped to make the Jewish voice on these issues part of the national conversation, respected by politicians,

other communities, refugee and anti-racism organisations. I look forward to the next chapter in the JCORE story.” He added, “The new relationship with HIAS will ensure that social justice remains at the heart of Jewish values, reinforcing a positive Jewish identity for ourselves and wider society.” Adam Rose, Chairperson, JCORE added, “This merger gives our community access to a pool of knowledge and talent which will add huge support to the projects and campaigns that JCORE runs.” Mark Hetfield, President and CEO, HIAS commented, “At HIAS, we used to help refugees because they were Jewish, but today we help refugees in over 20 countries because we are Jewish. The Jewish community of the UK knows the heart of the stranger, we are very excited to build on JCORE’s work by connecting them with HIAS’ work with forcibly displaced persons around the world.” He added, “The work of HIAS and JCORE in the UK will, consistent with HIAS’ localised approach, be locally led. The global refugee crisis demands an international response as no one community can do it alone.” Details: Lionel Salama 07957 206236 or lionel@hope.agency

Bennett meets Bin Yayed in UAE
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Ecuadoran President Guillermo Lasso BY ADAM MOSES
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made a whistle stop visit to the United Arabi Emirates at the end of last week. Israel’s leader Bennett met with President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed to discuss economic and regional issues. Bennett offered condolences on the passing of President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed recently. “He helped pave the way for the

Derek Kammerzell faced disciplinary procedures after an investigation found he had Nazi symbols on his office door and made Holocaust jokes. Kammerzell initially received a two-week suspension without pay. Following an outcry, he was put on administrative leave and asked to resign. But authorities could not dismiss him as it violated the principle of “double jeopardy”. If Kammerzell resigned, the City faced a huge payout. It was reported Kammerzell asked for over $3 million. A City of Kent spokesperson said in a statement, “While this is a substantial sum, we strongly believe that settling this matter will be a substantial step towards meeting our commitment to the community and continuing with the excellent work the police department is doing.” Kammerzell claimed he was inspired by Amazon Prime TV show The Man in the High Castle and was deeply embarrassed by the incident.

partnership between Israel and the UAE, the same partnership that we will strengthen today,” said Bennett, adding that Bin Zayed was a man of vision and a brave leader. “Together, we will take the special bond that has been woven between our countries to the next level for the growth and security of both our peoples,” Bennett continued. The Bennett and Bin Zayed delegations met at the presidential palace for a working lunch where they also discussed advancing regional architecture.
The two leaders have met a number of times in recent months in the UAE and Egypt. Bilateral ties have grown since the accord between the nations was signed and a full free trade agreement reached. Business has grown by hundreds of millions of dollars and is expected to grow further to $3 billion a year. Bennett and bin Zayed vowed to agree a trade deal in Abu Dhabi and Egypt, which came to fruition in April, the first full deal for Israel with an Arab country. Economy and Industry Minister Maj.-Gen. Orna Barbivay and UAE Foreign Minister Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi agreed the bilateral agreement. The accord includes issues regarding trade including regulations, customs, trade in services, cooperation, government procurement, electronic trade and trademarks. Up to 95% of goods traded between the two countries are included in the fine detail and will be exempt from customs immediately or gradually. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid welcomed the agreement in the spirit of the Egypt Negev Summit. Israel’s burgeoning relationship with UAE saw President Isaac Herzog host the first convention of the Israeli Climate Forum, also in April. The historic initiative is a collaboration between hundreds of professionals and activists from the government, Knesset, civil society and academia. The ground breaking programme is a joint venture of the Life & Society Organisation and Bennett’s Office to tackle the global climate crisis. The Forum’s activities have heralded working groups that have sought solutions and new ideas. Herzog has made the fight against the crisis a flagship issue of his presidency since entering office.

‘Eitan’ in serial production BY SIMCHA ABIR
Israel’s Ministry of Defence’s Tank and APC Directorate has completed serial production of the first wheeled and armoured APC in the world. The first serially produced ‘Eitan’ APC tank drove off the production line at the “Merkava” factory in the Tel HaShomer base. The ‘Eitan’ project was initiated following Israel’s Gaza Strip Operation ‘Protective Edge’ in 2014. Brig. Gen. Guy Paglin, Head of the Tank and APC Directorate, said, “The ‘Eitan’ APC will gradually be integrated into the IDF’s combat units. The development of new weapons allows us to replace old and less advanced technologies, promising that our soldiers are equipped with the best, most advanced defence equipment for all combat scenarios.” The ‘Eitan’ armoured combat eightwheel vehicle is based on “Merkava” and “Namer” technologies. It is equipped to carry 12 combat personnel. The 750-horsepower ‘Eitan’ can reach 90 km per hour, has high all-terrain capabilities and has an operational use for multiple days. Engineers developed the state-of-theart technologies including an “Iron Fist” defence system, peripheral day and night vision cameras, front calculation and touch monitors. Multiple technologies were developed with Israeli security industries, the IDF’s Ground Forces and MoD’s Directorate of Defence R&D.
Ofcom rules against LBC during anti-Israel protests BY DAVID SAFFER
Ofcom has ruled against broadcaster LBC after a reporter described Israel’s Embassy to the UK as the “Jewish embassy” during anti-Israel protests in London last year. Ofcom considered the journalistic reports in May 2021 during hostilities between Israel and Hamas potentially breached the Broadcasting Code of “due accuracy” and “generally accepted standards” including discriminatory or offensive language. The station is known for its balanced coverage of Jewish and Israel related topics but fell short according to the media communications regulator on this occasion. Campaign Against Antisemitism acknowledged that LBC has a “strong journalistic record” of exposing antisemitism but welcomed Ofcom’s decision. A spokesman said, “During Hamas’s war against Israel, antisemitism was skyrocketing in Britain, with too many people seeking to hold British Jews collectively responsible for the actions and perceived actions of the Israeli Government. For a major radio station to appear, even if in error, to lend credence to this conflation by describing the Israeli Embassy as the ‘Jewish embassy’, cannot go
unremarked. We have trained Ofcom in the use of the International Definition of Antisemitism and are pleased to see that the regulator has appropriately applied it in this instance.” Demonstrators chanted ‘free Palestine’, ‘long live Palestine’, ‘free Gaza’ and waved Palestinian flags during heated protests. The Israeli Embassy issued to LBC a statement at the time. They noted, ‘Hamas is a radical terrorist organisation that fires rockets indiscriminately on civilian populations. Their charter calls for the establishment of an Islamic state instead of Israel. It is regrettable to see citizens of a democratic country giving legitimacy to such an organisation and its violent actions. Unfortunately, over the last week we’ve seen an incitement to violence and antisemitic signs and slogans chanted in demonstrations. This has forced the Israeli Embassy in the heart of London to need to be barricaded by the police for protection’. According to Ofcom, a recording or version of the report was broadcast three times
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
during rolling coverage. Each time it referred to a “Jewish Embassy” sometimes alongside references to the “Israeli Embassy”. LBC argued that the reporter “tripped over his words in error during the heat of the moment” and had corrected his language during the initial broadcast. LBC duly removed a full four-hour programme quickly from catch up services and stated there was “absolutely no intent to cause any harm or offence during the recording or broadcast of this report”. The error, they noted, was “far from ideal” and “in no way malicious” to offend the Jewish community. But Ofcom decided the report “was not duly accurate” and breached Rule 5.1 of the Code. Regarding Rule. 2.3, Ofcom decided interchanging terms ‘Israeli Embassy’ and ‘Jewish Embassy’ was “potentially offensive to some listeners”. Ofcom concluded the report did not constitute antisemitic hate speech, but ‘potential’ to cause offence.

AAD calls for Burnley to rename stand BY ADAM MOSES
Action Against Discrimination supports calls for Burnley FC to rename its Bob Lord Stand in light of anti-semitic comments he made in the 1970s at a Variety Club dinner. The club have launched an investigation although Lord apologised for his comments at the time. Burnley are under growing pressure and the Lord probe follows three Burnley supporters being arrested after video footage emerged of them appearing to perform Nazi salutes during the match versus Tottenham Hotspur on 15 May. Jonathan Metliss, AAD Chairman said, “Those remarks caused anger at the time and many guests walked out of the event in protest. The incident in the Tottenham game are now subject to punitive action.” Metliss added that in the circumstances, Burnley should rename the stand in the “best interests of football and honourable behaviour”. “Anti-semitic behaviour in any form is simply not acceptable, nor must it be tolerated or condoned,” he noted. A Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson said, “Antisemitism has no place in football, including the odious remark made by Bob Lord. We commend Burnley FC for acknowledging this past and opening a dialogue with the local and wider Jewish community.”
The club, who were relegated from the Premier League last month, are under mounting pressure and has confirmed it is launching an investigation after members of the Jewish community expressed concerns. At the dinner Lord PHOTO: FLICKR said, “We have to stand up against a move to get soccer on the cheap by the Jews who run TV.” This prompted many guests to leave early and a complaint from Bryan Cowgill, Head of BBC Television Sport, and his television counterpart, Bill Ward, to Sir Andrew Stephen, Chairman of the Football Association, and Len Shipman, President of the Football League, Lord later issued a partial apology, stating, “If I have hurt anybody’s feelings. Bennett hails coalition achievements but Bibi slams anniversary BY DAVID SAFFER
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett hailed the first year of his coalition government at the weekly Cabinet meeting last Sunday. But Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu criticised its performance in the past 12 months. Israel’s leader overviewed progress made since the “national salvation government” was established. Describing the present government as one of the “most difficult coalitions” the Knesset had known, he explained, “It seems to me that whoever is honest with himself will admit that this is the best government the country has had. “This government pulled the country from paralysis to growth, from weakness to deterrence, from chaos to normality. This government cannot be stopped. It must continue to fight for the Israeli public. This government has done in one year what other governments have not done in a decade.” Bennett overviewed the political landscape at the time after Netanyahu’s demise in 2021. “We inherited an economic collapse and have brought about 8.1% growth, the highest in the advanced world,” he enthused. “We inherited massive unemployment and have returned the masses of unemployed to livelihoods and record employment. “We inherited a south ablaze from Hamas rockets and incendiary balloons. We, all of us, provided the children of Sderot and the south with the quietest year they have had in their lives. We inherited suitcases of dollars being delivered to Hamas, we stopped this contemptible practice immediately.” Regarding violence in the Arab sector, Bennett said that murders and shooting incidents were down 40% whilst lives had been saved. He also praised the recent Jerusalem Day flag parade. “We approved the parade without flinching because this is Israel’s sovereignty,” Bennett said. “We raised the spirit of the nation anew and, yes, the deterrence. We inherited a huge deficit that threatened the future of our children and we lowered it to zero.” There had been a “historic change” in the
fight against Iran, he added, while public services had seen a “renewed action” for citizens. Bennett concluded, “After one year of the salvation government we can declare, together we have succeeded.” While admitting the government was not the one most Israelis had hoped for and against “continued bickering and chaos”, the government he said had demonstrated “strength in working together”. Bennett explained, “We have proven that people with different views, at times even opposing views, are capable of working together on behalf of the country. All of the achievements that I have enumerated we have all brought them together.” Bennett praised Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, Justice Minister Gideon Saar, Defence Minister Benny Gantz, Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman, Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli, Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz and Ra’am Chairman MK Mansour Abbas for their efforts. “We have gone from a culture of ‘I’ to one of ‘we’,’ he enthused. “I know that there are those who are mocking us for continuing to fight for the existence of the government despite all the pitfalls and the blows that we have suffered but to fight for one’s country is not ludicrous, it is exalted. Indeed, I prefer our lot to be with the fighters and not the mockers. “We are not giving up on our country. We are not giving up on the possibility of cooperation between people who have different views, who love this country to the same degree. We are not in despair and we are not broken. We do not have the luxury of breaking because we do not have another country.” Whilst the coalition has survived, Bicom have highlighted a perspective as the government faces the prospect of imminent collapse as it is balanced at 60-60 in the Knesset. Earlier this month the coalition lost a major Knesset vote to extend legal jurisdiction to 500,000 Jewish settlers in the West Bank. The bill failed by 58 votes to 52 following a heated debate. Bennett’s under-fire government are expected to try to pass the bill this month. It will only take a small number of MK

Amongst various reports Nir Orbach of Bennett’s Yamina Party has held talks with Bennett. It has been reported he may resign but due to his association with the PM, Orbach could allow left-wing partners to re-establish stability. Michael Biton of Blue and White will no longer vote with the coalition over issues regarding public transportation. Meretz leader Nitzan Horowitz, who brought Ghaida Rinawi Zoabi into the party, reportedly told Army Radio that the “breaking of ranks” is “extremely serious”. “An MK who is unwilling to vote in keeping with coalition discipline is free to resign,” he said. “No one is being held against their will. An MK’s Knesset seat doesn’t belong to him or her personally, it belongs to the party.” Netanyahu blasted Bennett’s government at a Likud meeting on Monday. “This is one of the longest levayos (funerals) in history,” he told reporters. “Everyone knows how it will end. That doesn’t stop

this deceptive government from rejoicing and telling themselves, ‘This is the best government ever, we’re working together beautifully.’” Likud’s leader added, “Everyone sees the truth, each one is working against the other via threats and extortion. A little more teamwork like this and we’re lost. Israeli citizens know the truth. The fraudulent weak government of Bennett, Lapid, and Abbas has no path, no direction, no vision, no leadership and no hope, no New Hope and no old hope.” “The only ones who have hope in this government are the blackmailers,” Netanyahu added, “Mansour Abbas demands and receives. Zoabi threatens and receives. Tibi tweets and receives. They receive billions from the pockets of Israeli citizens for the benefit of the Muslim Brotherhood government. They are the ones who control the state and the government. That’s why the cost of living is running rampant and inflation is soaring. “Bennett, Lapid and Abbas, it’s all your fault. You’re not doing anything. In the face of all this, there is zero policy and zero action.” Netanyahu continued, “It is time to bring Israel back to the right. It is time for a strong Likud-led government. It is time to bring a real government to Israel, a national and experienced government that will lower prices, lower taxes, ensure civilian security, build settlements and strengthen the Jewish and Zionist identity. A government that will restore our national dignity.”

Youth OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN
I am the president of the Zionist Central Council. Initially an umbrella organisation set up over a century ago, the ZCC has adapted over the years to become first a regional and now national group dedicated to the defence and promotion of the democratic State of Israel. Like many other similar organisations, we are constantly looking for ways to remain relevant and crucially attract a younger audience. Young in this context depends on your point of view. I remember a conversation pre-pandemic with a member of my Shul who said he had been to a communal meeting where he was the youngest one there. He remarked that since he is 75 years old this didn’t really instil very much confidence in whether that entity had much of an idea of what was going on around them. Much more recently, at a Friday night dinner I asked two people in their mid 20s what sort of event would they attend, and what generally interested them. They started to answer when the father of one
of them interrupted and started to tell me the answer. Only when I told him that the question was addressed to someone 40 years younger than him did he quieten down. And therein lies the problem. The older generation think they know the answers for those younger than themselves and conversely the younger generation believe that those over 40 need to be brought up to date. The answers from my target audience were interesting. They like Chabad (in Manchester) and also young professional events. Of course, 2 people is hardly a representative cross section either in respect of numbers or location. It did set me thinking, particularly about how each group views the other, and so often through their own and not the other’s eyes. So much of what I believe or know
comes from experiences gained over the last 40 or so years. Those in their 20s are drawing on their current experiences and the two are nowhere near the same. Some organisations have made efforts to involve young people though with varied success. Part of the problem is finding them. Social media has, particularly during the pandemic replaced face to face contact. The love affair that has developed with Teams and Zoom has meant that the usual chat before and after an event no longer exists. I was asked to join the ZCC when I went to one of their meetings. One of the executive sat next to me and chatted, following which I was invited to get involved. That couldn’t happen in a Zoom meeting and for as long as that format remains popular the opportunity to chat and get to know people remains unavailable. For some of you reading this, you may

feel that this is less compelling than the more familiar content which includes serious criticism of some policy or group. Yet this rather dull subject is absolutely vital not only to the longevity of communal groups but to the community as a whole. It is not about old versus young, or the ‘we know better’ attitude which sadly pervades all groups and ages. It is about a proper interaction across the ages so that even if there is not an agreement on all issues, there is an understanding that everyone needs to be involved. If the only way to communicate with some of those under 30 is by Instagram and other forms of social media, then we should be doing that. If it means getting a handle on tweeting, then do that. The ZCC is working hard on spreading the word across the generations and hopefully, where the ZCC leads, other groups will follow. This is an issue which is just too important to ignore. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Lead h9 West judged correctly that East’s 4c bid could not be forcing as he’d had a 3s Unassuming Cue Bid call available to him to show good support for the overcalled suit.. With clubs 4-1 and both diamond honours wrongly placed, his discreet final pass was the prudent call at the prevailing vulnerability. West led the h9, which was clearly from a doubleton or singleton. Declarer saw that he had a fine dummy; the task before him was to keep partner happy by making the game. The main issue was that there was an apparent loser in each suit and that the only way to avoid a heart loser was to make two diamond tricks, with the ace being onside. Thus declarer won the heart lead with his ace and led a diamond at trick two (although a club would have worked as well). West played low and dummy’s queen won the trick. Declarer now paused to consider the rest of the play. If East had the ace of trumps, there would be no way to prevent the defenders from making a heart trick. If he played a trump next and West had the ace he would win and play a heart next; then when West makes his ace of diamonds he would put East in with a club to cash a heart trick. As result, declarer saw that he had to cut the link between the defensive hands by leading a club at trick three. On this layout, East won the trick with the king of clubs and exited with the queen of hearts. Declarer took this in dummy with the king of hearts then played a trump to the king and West’s ace. West exited with a hopeful club, as he had no hearts left. Declarer ruffed, drew the outstanding trump and then led a diamond, taken by West with the ace. As the nine of trumps remained in dummy as an entry to cash the king of diamonds, West gave in.

Jami launches new campaign to improve understanding of mental health
Following an increase in demand for mental health support within the community, Jami is launching a new campaign to improve understanding of mental health and to highlight how its services can help those who are adversely affected. As the leading charity supporting mental health in the Jewish community, Jami’s Understand Mental Health multimedia campaign will explain some of the symptoms of mental illness; the impact on people struggling with mental health told through real-life experiences; and the ways in which Jami supports people to manage their mental health. Increasing the community’s understanding of mental health is the next step for Jami after years of raising awareness about mental health and its impact on people’s lives, through events such as the Jami Mental Health Awareness Shabbat. And Jami’s latest campaign couldn’t be timelier considering the rising number of people seeking the charity’s support. As Laurie Rackind, Jami’s chief executive, explains: “Many of us have become much more aware of our own mental health and its importance to our overall wellbeing, but we need to know that at any given time at least 25 per cent of us are actively dealing with a mental health problem. Developing our understanding about mental distress and the impact it has, will enable us to better recognise how our family, friends or colleagues may be feeling and make ourselves available to listen and support them in whichever ways we can.” Over the past two-and-a-quarter years, Jami has seen a 55 per cent increase in the hours of support delivered in response to the Covid crisis, a trebling in demand for help from its Carer and Family Support service, and a doubling of requests for support from young adults. As a result, Jami’s lifesaving services have had to expand and adapt to meet the growing needs of the community. To this end, Jami is expanding its Head Room Café in Golders Green, which provides informal and inclusive mental health support on the high street. The Café’s free, peer-led programme of events aims to
Mark
reduce social isolation and build personal and communal wellbeing by providing the chance for people to build relationships, take part in meaningful conversations and gain mutual support. Through the expansion into its neighbouring premises, Jami will be able to broaden its programme of events further and deliver services to more people in an accessible, supportive and relaxed space. In response to the rise in children with mental health problems – which saw an increase of 77 per cent of children aged under 18 needing care for issues ranging from self-harm to eating disorders between April and October 2021 compared to the same period in 2019* – and the lack of available mental health services for them, Jami launched its pilot Children and Young Person’s (CYP) service in March 2022. Using a multi-skilled team, consisting of social workers, mental health practitioners, a mental health support worker and a young people’s education officer, Jami’s CYP service is providing tailored one-toone support based on each young person’s individual needs.
To fund Jami’s CYP and other mental health services, Jami launched its first-ever crowdfunding campaign, See Me, See Mental Health, in January 2022, raising £1.24million; a sure sign of how much the community has come to recognise the impact of mental illness and the need to ensure that professional support is available. Nevertheless, Jami’s newest campaign aims to reinforce this message further. Mark’s story Mark visits Jami’s Head Room Café at least three times a week because he likes “the aura”. “Coming here is like a holiday,” he says. “The staff are so lovely. I want to engage with people who understand me,” he explains. “And they do.” Café manager, Andrea, brings Mark a plate full of food because he often forgets to eat. “I only have one meal a day,” he admits. “But I love cakes,” he says smiling. Mark doesn’t have a big appetite, so Andrea keeps checking on him, gently reminding him to take a mouthful every now and again. The care and compassion she shows Mark and other Head Room regulars is clear to see. It’s also one of the reasons why Mark travels 1.5 hours every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and sometimes Fridays, to this specific Café. The other reasons are to take part in the weekly programme of events and to be around like-minded people. “Head Room gives me somewhere to go each day. There’s always someone to lean
on. And I can be myself here,” he explains. But being Mark isn’t easy. The scars left by years of bullying, which started in nursery and continued until he left school at 16, haven’t faded at all. “It was hard to talk about the bullying with anyone,” he says. “It made me quieter and more withdrawn. I felt imprisoned in my own body. I didn’t have the confidence to do things and I never went out. It was horrible.” Then, a violent assault during a burglary, several years ago, left him in a coma and led to him having frequent seizures. He says: “My seizures can happen any time but loneliness affects me the most. I hate the weekends because I can’t come to the Café and that’s when I feel really isolated. I’ve had mental health problems all my life but the accident made it worse. I just want to be like other people.” Mark enjoys company. “When I come to the Café, I say hello to everyone,” he says. He also joins the conversation and walking groups, and takes part in Creativity4All, Head Room Café’s twice-weekly art and writing session, with an emphasis on connection, peer support and process. “I do art to bring a bit of sunshine into my life,” he says. “I also love art galleries and I like to write.” On Wednesdays, Mark goes to Jami’s community hub in Redbridge, where he receives support from one of their occupational therapists and the opportunity to engage with people who also have longterm mental health problems. “It’s nice just being with people who understand what you’re going through,” he says. “When you feel low, you need someone to pick you up. You need nice people around you.” But whether Mark is mingling at the hub or connecting in mutually supportive ways at our Café, he says: “Jami provides people who listen and places to go. Without Jami, I’d be lost.” If you need support or are supporting someone who needs help, visit https:// jamiuk.org/get-support/ or contact 020 8458 2223. JDA celebrates its platinum jubilee The Jewish Deaf Association (JDA) celebrated its Platinum Jubilee with a spectacular event organised by Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users for 100 guests from the Deaf signing community. Whilst paying tribute to the JDA’s invaluable work at the heart of the Deaf community over the past 70 years, the event also reunited lifelong friends – now aged 63 – 97 years - who grew up together at the Residential School for Jewish Deaf Children (RSJDC). Carolyn Nabarro, like so many Deaf children before her, was sent away to live at the school when she was 2 years old. Jewish Deaf children lived there together until they were 16. They were taught orally by hearing teachers and encouraged to speak rather than sign. This was a struggle for some children. Back in those days, some Deaf schools punished their pupils for using sign language. Four elders of the community – Miriam, Harold, Martin and Leslie (all of whom grew up at the school and have been members of the Jewish Deaf Association since it opened 70 years ago) cut a stunning 70th Anniversary cake, created by deaf baker Ravit Freeman of Peaks and Swirls. All eyes were on Harold Fallman when he pressed the big red button and fireworks appeared! This was the big moment everyone had been waiting for – the launch of the new Jewish Deaf History (London) website – www.jdeafhistorylondon.co.uk.
Four elders of the JDA community cut the 70th Anniversary cake
The website is crammed with Jewish Deaf people’s stories, photos, videos and memorabilia, preserving the history of the JDA, World Organisation of Jewish Deaf, Jewish Deaf Sports and the RSJDC, which was founded in in 1865 and closed down in 1965. The website was generously sponsored by Harold Fallman, who has been a JDA member since he was 16 years old. Now, at 86, he is lovingly cared for by JDA’s dedicated team of support workers, who look after the older members of the Deaf community like family. The website was created by Ben Glover, a professional Deaf video designer. The content was compiled thanks to months
of hard work from Deaf volunteers Barry David, Ann Clements, Mira Goldberg (JDA Trustee), Linda Woolfe, Carolyn Denmark, Sara Olsen and Daniel Clements, supported by the help and input of many Deaf people in the community. Ann and Carolyn both come from Deaf families. Ann’s parents met through the JDA, which is also where she met her late husband Harvey. JDA has been a great dating agency for so many Deaf couples over the decades! Ann now works at the Jewish Deaf Association managing Dcafe, its signing café, where she has trained a team of unemployed
Deaf volunteers to create delicious menus and run a vibrant meeting place where Deaf people love to socialise together. Ann said: “During lockdown, I was sorting out our hundreds of old family photos. I came across historical photographs, including from RSJDC, JDA and Deaf Sports such as the Deaf Olympics. I thought to myself, ‘why keep these hidden in boxes and albums?’ “Everything really took off from there and we’ve had some great finds – such as the census for RSJDC dating back to 1871 and so many fabulous photographs and videos from over the decades.” Carolyn added: “We are very proud of our achievement. This is a much-needed and valuable website for present and future generations to enjoy.” JDA enables deaf people – young, old and everyone in between – to overcome daily obstacles in our hearing world, and to get the very best out of life. It’s the only place where Jewish Deaf and Deafblind signers can receive the support they need, enjoy life together and feel a sense of belonging. JDA Chief Executive, Sue Cipin says: “As we join The Queen in celebrating our Platinum Jubilee, we’re so proud to celebrate 70 years of our loving, caring, laughing, wonderful JDA community. Here’s to many more years of creating Jewish Deaf history together!”

Eliot Sacks receiing the award on behalf of his brother Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks z”l
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem paid tribute on Monday to Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks – in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the Jewish people – by posthumously conferring on him an honorary doctorate. Rabbi Sacks had served as a visiting professor at the university. The degree of Doctor of Philosophiae Honoris Causa is conferred annually on a select number of esteemed honourees from around the world. Rabbi Sacks’ brother, Eliot Sacks, accepted the award on his behalf from the Hebrew University’s president, Prof. Asher Cohen, and rector, Prof. Barak Medina. The honourees were distinguished by academic leadership, creative achievement, or activities of notable benefit to humanity, the State of Israel, or the Jewish people, and also included award-winning film producer Quentin Tarantino, legal scholar Lee Epstein, Israeli artist Sigalit Landau,

and other academics and philanthropists. Lady Elaine Sacks said: “It was both moving and inspiring to be present as the Hebrew University bestowed this honour in memory of my dear husband, acknowledging the impact his legacy continues to make. My family and I were deeply touched by this very meaningful gesture.” Hebrew University President, Prof. Asher Cohen, said: “Leaders inspire. They show us the way forward and light up the path for those who follow. Our honourees are all driven by a pioneering spirit and a deep sense of mission, whether in the field of academia, business, civic service or philanthropy, and their contributions are boundless.” A new video, created especially for the ceremony by the Rabbi Sacks Legacy Trust, showcased Rabbi Sacks’ life and achievements as a teacher of Torah, a moral voice, and a leader of leaders.
Exciting development about BRCA testing in the Jewish Community During her speech at the NHS Confed Expo conference in Liverpool this week, the NHS Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard stated that “The NHS will not rest in our efforts to catch cancer early and save more lives.” In addition, she mentioned a number of initiatives the NHS are launching in the coming months to try to accelerate progress on diagnosing more cancers at an earlier stage. Specifically, she announced an exciting project, working with the Jewish community to offer genetic testing for BRCA gene mutations. People with Jewish heritage are at higher risk of these mutations, with up to 1 in 40 people affected, compared with 1 in 400 in the general population. The programme will ensure people found to have a BRCA mutation will have the opportunity to be enrolled onto appropriate surveillance and treatment pathways and of course given ongoing support, with the aim of diagnosing more cancers at an early

Jewish Care’s biggest ever Family Fun Day back with a hearty welcome More than 3000 people from the local community flocked to Jewish Care’s biggest ever Family Fun Day on Sunday 12 June, back for the first time since 2019. The sun shone and visitors were greeted by Jewish Care’s new purple heart mascot, welcoming families with handshakes and hugs to the day at Aldenham Country Park Events Field. The Family Fun Day raised funds to help enhance the lives of residents at Jewish Care’s Anita Dorfman House care home which is part of Sandringham, Jewish Care’s newest care and community hub, close by in the Stanmore/ Hertfordshire borders. Families across the generations, enjoyed an afternoon of fun, food and entertainment which was sponsored by OakNorth Bank. Activities ranged from Zorbing, a climbing tower and Laser Quest for older children to train rides, chair-o-planes, bungee trampolines, inflatables and soft play for younger children. Children got creative in the arts and crafts zone, made slime and dropped into the face painting, glitter and hair braiding bars in between tea cup rides and made cards and papers flowers with PJ Library for residents at Jewish Care homes. Refreshments kept the fun seekers refuelled from the barbeque as well as treats from the popcorn, candy floss and waffle stalls and drinks with added entertainment from schools, Clore Shalom and Kerem School, as well as Dancing with Louise and Vanessa Class School of Dance. BBC Radio London broadcaster and journalist, Vanessa Feltz, who came to the Family Fun Day with her daughters and grandchildren, said, “What a magnificent day, beautifully organised and so much fun for all the family.” Parent, Gemma Sinai, said, “It’s been a really fun day and so well organised. It’s really nice to see everyone from the community get together. I have a personal connection as my uncle lives at a Jewish Care home so we are very pleased to support the charity.” Grandparent, Anthony Kaiser, who came with children and grandchildren, agreed, “It was brilliantly organised and varied, there was something for everyone - the children have had fun and we’ve had fun too,” and Janice Kaiser, added “My dad lived at Jewish Care’s Princess Alexandra Home before it became Jewish Care’s Anita Dorfman House, so we know what a great job they do.” Sisters, Liliana,10 and Ariella, 8, said, “It was really cool. The trampolines, tea cups and climbing tower were really fun and I really liked the food,” and their brother, Sammy, age 6 added, “I liked the police car and shows, we had a lot of fun.” Speaking after the event, Amy Woolf, Chair Jewish Care Families and Jewish Care

Trustee, said, “It was wonderful to see so many families having a brilliant day out at the Jewish Care Family Fun Day today. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard, all of our volunteers and also everyone who came along to support us to make it such a great success. “We’re pleased that the funds we’ve raised will help to enhance the lives of the residents at Jewish Care’s Anita Dorfman House at Sandringham,” continued Amy. “During Covid-19 pandemic, especially before we had the vaccine, the carers and housekeeping team selflessly put the residents’ wellbeing and safety before their own everyday and the staff’s love, care and dedication to the residents’ across Jewish Care is inspiring for us all.” Adam Overlander-Kaye, Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising & Community Engagement, added, “It was a totally brilliant event and was wonderful to see so many people across the generations having a fun day whilst raising much needed funds for Jewish Care’s Anita Dorfman House care home at Sandringham. Huge thanks to the committee, all the volunteers and professional team for their hard work in making the day such a success. Thank you to all the schools who took part and to all those across the whole community for supporting the event and making it the biggest one ever.” Ben Barbanel from OakNorth Bank, who kindly sponsored the event, said, “OakNorth Bank was delighted to sponsor this fantastic Family Fun Day and to support Jewish Care, which does amazing work in supporting older people across the community. We’re so pleased that the day was a huge success and enjoyed by so many people.”

JUDAISM IN A NUTSHELL
Dear rabbi Is it possible to summarise the basic principles of Judaism in a few memorable lines? Isam Dear Isam I can do it in one: “Don’t do unto others what you would not have done unto yourself.” (The great sage, Hillel, taught me that!). Essentially the principle of “love your fellow as yourself.” If you can get that right, then you’ll have the right approach towards people, towards G-d and towards the world around you. That’s all you need.
BURIAL RIGHTS
Dear Rabbi, I was a widower and remarried a wonderful lady recently. Is there any halachic ruling as to whether or not I can be buried with my first wife when I die? George Dear George Mazal Tov to you! It’s wonderful when one is able to rediscover happiness in life. It is also perfectly understandable that the ‘ultimate attachment’ remains to one’s original life partner, and as such wants to be buried next to her. Jewish law certainly has no problem with this, and I know it is practised in many orthodox circles of similar circumstance. I suppose the only concern is ensuring that it doesn’t create issues between you and your present wife and also to ensure that your wishes will be properly implemented in due course. But here’s hoping that “due course” won’t be for many years. In the meantime, wishing you a bliss filled future of only happiness ahead.
I REGRET IT
Dear Rabbi I became frum several years ago because I wanted to lead a moral, upstanding life. Unfortunately, during these past few years, and through my line of work, I have encountered a lot of unethical behaviour amongst some elements of the Jewish community. I discussed this with my Rabbis and mentors who said things like, “don’t judge Judaism by the Jews,” etc. I don’t find that an adequate response and to be frank I am starting to regret having become frum. I would be grateful for your guidance and advice. James Dear James I am not going to respond in respect to the unethical behaviour of others. I don’t know the details and it is not for me to judge. But let’s talk about why you became frum? Did you do it because you liked the people or because you liked the faith? You obviously had a genuine sense of conviction which led you down the path you chose. That’s the beginning and end of it. It’s between you and G-d. No one else has any business featuring in the equation of your convictions. If they do, they it is not genuine conviction. Are there bad apples in every bushel? Regrettably so. Are you the one to judge which apples are really good and which ones are bad? No. The bruises you see on the apples are external and you’re making your judgement call on that basis. Either way, if you truly love apples, then you don’t throw away the whole bushel on account of a select few. Frankly, even if the whole
Pirkei Avot
bushel was bad, you don’t give up on your love for apples. You simply go find a better bushel, or pluck them from the tree yourself.
EMBRACING THE ARGUMENT
Dear Rabbi In a recent column you wrote, “Why would you want to avoid arguments? It would imply no passion in your marriage!” Are you serious? Ann Dear Ann Yes.
ARE ALL FAITHS EQUAL?
Dear Rabbi My best friend is a devout Christian. One of the many things we have in common is our commitment for our respective religions. Faith is faith and the way we approach our lives is very similar even though we pray to different G-ds. That’s where my curiosity begins. If she is praying to her version of G-d then who is answering her prayers? As a Jew who only believes in Hashem, I wonder if it is Hashem who hears all prayer or do prayers to the wrong G-d go unanswered? Natalia Dear Natalia Great question! And this is where Judaism will differ fundamentally from other faiths. In the view of other religions, the straight up answer would be, “if you’re not praying to the right one, you won’t get a result.” Judaism’s take on prayer is very different: The Hebrew word for prayer, tefillah, means “self-judgment” and “introspection.” Prayer is meant to be an introspective
process. The reason why we pray is not always to change what G-d had intended for us, but for us to get a better picture of true reality. We might enter the prayers thinking about all that we need and want, but we are meant to finish the prayers with a new realization of all that G-d does for us and how little we may actually deserve. A person who experiences prayer this way, as it is intended to be experienced, will finish off prayers as a very different person

There is so much to learn from this little Mishnah it
might as well be as gigantic as the Pacific Ocean! There is a great shiur available to watch on YouTube by the great Reb Yakov Hillel. In it he advises that just because a person can be making money in business does not mean that they can not be learning Torah for many hours too. His advice was to hire good staff including a good secretary or two and to keep your eye on the business. By fully trusting in Hashem the good staff around you will allow you to spend much time delving into the study of Torah and very interestingly you can make far more money in far less hours of work then people who can work much longer and earn far less! If we keep Hashem in mind constantly from dusk till dawn, then we will always turn out OK in the end.

than they began. The person who began the prayers (as a selfish, self-oriented individual) might not have really deserved what they were asking for, but the new person who concluded the prayers (as a thankful, grateful and more spiritual being) might now deserve it. In this way our prayers are actually answered, because we change in the process, and thus what we need or want will be granted – regardless of whom we are talking to.

Beha’alotecha: Great Minds and Great Wisdoms BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN
Moshe’s authority has become unsteady and is teetering on the edge. Having faced a barrage of complaints and grievances, he is forced to delegate some of his authority to a newly formed Sanhedrin. Excluded from this project, two renegade prophets further subvert Moshe’s authority by prophesying in an unlicensed manner. According to some reports they predicted Moshe early “retirement”, implying that he would not steer the nation to the promised land. Moshe, his authority and his future leadership have become the talk of this small desert town. To paraphrase Henry Kissinger “[small town] politics are so vicious precisely because the stakes are so small.” Before things turns ugly, Moshe’s could use some reinforcement. Instead, Moshes’ siblings begin to discuss his marriage. Married to an exotic wife, and designated for constant prophetic “readiness”, Moshe certainly had a “different” marriage. Miriam and Aharon’s initial conversation seems harmless, and we don’t detect and malice or sinister intent. Quickly though, the conversation veers, becoming more discourteous and more vindictive. Envious of Moshe, his siblings wonder aloud about his distinctive prophetic station. “After all, G-d spoke with them as well! Why does Moshe behave as if he were different”? Their insensitive chatter about his personal life has morphed into a direct assault on his leadership and his divinely ordained prophetic charge. It is unclear how harmless conversation about Moshe’s marriage turned into a toxic attack of his behavior. Either way, Hashem’s response makes the deeper intentions of his siblings clear. First, the Torah defends Moshe’s unassailable integrity, designating him as the most humble man alive, privileged, in part, due to his modesty, to unmatched prophecy. Miriam is stricken with tza’arat, an affliction generally associated with the sin of slander. Regrettably, at the very moment Moshe most needed backup, he was backstabbed. Worse, Miriam’s defamatory behaviour seems contagious. The very next section describes the meraglim and their scandalous reports about the promised land. Miriam’s slurs invite the cynicism of the spies and, ultimately, a mass rebellion against Hashem and a four-hundred year old promise. This woeful sequence
showcases the corrosive effects of slander. Disparaging others trains us to focus upon the negative. Harping upon the negative breeds general cynicism and the loss of hope. Pessimism emasculates faith and hope, leading to religious rebellion. The entire Jewish camp was infected by viral slander, as Jewish history comes crashing down. Often times, idle and empty gossip turns vile. Slander doesn’t always begin with malicious intent. Sometimes it begins with innocent talk about people and their private lives, but ends in invasive or antagonistic conversation. Too much conversation about the affairs of others, may quickly veer into denigration and slurs. Great Minds and Small Minds Eleanor Roosevelt once remarked: “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people”. Speaking about people and their lives is toxic and leads to slander. Additionally though, unhealthy focusing upon the private lives of others shrivels the human imagination and shrinks us into smaller “spaces”. Ideas stretch our imagination and broaden our horizons. Great minds avoid speaking about the daily lives of others. Small minds can’t get enough of these details. We are becoming too un’idea-ed and we are shrinking. We spend too much time speaking about people and their lives, and not enough time discussing ideas. The pace of information flow in an “information age” forces us to read too quickly, leaving little space for “ideas”, which require time and thought. Speaking about people doesn’t require time nor does it require concentration. We face a furious “information deluge” and we accelerate our “processing” of that information, leaving no room and no space for deeper ideas. In 1934 a British poet named T. S. Elliot lamented “Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?; Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?“. If we spend too much time on “information” such as pointless facts and insignificant trivia, we have fewer resources available for “knowledge”. Likewise, if we pursue endless volumes of knowledge- even important knowledge- we have less time to contemplate that knowledge, internalize it, and distil deeper wisdom. T.S. Eliot warned of this phenomenon close to 100 years ago. I wonder what he would say one hundred years later in the age of internet and social media.
When is the last time you thought about one idea for more than fifteen minutes? It typically takes that long to “encompass” an idea, dissect it and associate it with prior knowledge. We are barely afforded fifteen seconds, let alone fifteen minutes.
TORAH STUDY
Interestingly the world of torah study has undergone a similar – and in many, many ways a welcome shift. Daf yomi has unquestionably revolutionized Torah, by extending Talmudic experience to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. This remarkable extension of Talmud study though, may also be diluting the “quality” of Talmud study for those who have greater time and resources available for more in-depth analysis. In depth analysis of Talmud, otherwise known as “lomdus”, has receded in the modern world of Daf yomi. Again, regarding daf yomi, potential “thinning” is a price worth paying to for the broad extension of Talmud. However, the Daf yomi revolution is also creating a mode of Torah study in which we read “quickly” to keep pace with the “schedule”. In our mad race to finish daf yomi, Mishnah yomi, daily Tanach or even shnayim mikra, we may not be allocating enough time for thinking, for processing and for internalizing. The information we are consuming isn’t percolating long enough to become internal wisdom or deeply anchored ideas.
THE IMPACT
How does this all impact our lives? Firstly, without wisdom we become shallow versions of ourselves. Mass knowledge
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
can be rapidly consumed, but rarely “sinks” deeply enough into our personality to shape our identity. We aim to study Torah so that the wisdom of Hashem shapes our character. If torah is never internalized into personal wisdom we can become bifurcated- avid “guzzlers” of torah, whose inner identity remains unaffected by the word of G-d. The same can be said about general knowledge which is easy to process but more difficult to refine into deeper truth. Knowledge hovers “above” identity but wisdom sinks into our deep subconscious and crafts our personalities. We acquire knowledge but we become wisdom. Secondly, shallowness invites broad generalizations of other human beings. We begin to see the world through stereotypical lenses of gender, colour, race, religion, clothing, political affiliation, or lesser “codes” which don’t reflect individuality or character. When we apply stereotypes to individuals, we rob ourselves of opportunity to learn from real people, their lives, their dignity, and their depth. Life becomes outlined in back and white and we lose all colour. Sometimes less is more, and more is less. In the age of “more” we often walk away with “less”.

Who Runs the World? BY RABBI BINNY FREEDMAN
In Poland, we heard an incredible story regarding the Mozhitzer Rebbe’s student, Azriel David Fastag, the composer of many magnificent famous melodies of the Mozhitzer Chassidim. In a cattle car, on his way to Treblinka, the clickety-clack of the wheels inspired his last composition, the haunting melody of Ani Ma’amin (one of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith: that we believe in the coming of Mashiach [the redeemer or anointed one] even though he may tarry…) and he began to sing. The powerful tune inspired those around him to sing along and soon Jews in the neighboring cattle cars joined in too. Hundreds of Jews. on their way to their deaths, singing aloud their faith in G-d and believing in redemption against all the odds. Realizing the power of this niggun (tune) Reb Azriel begged for volunteers
to jump from the train and bring the niggun back to the Mozhitzer Rebbe. Two students volunteered, one of whom survived the jump and succeeded in his mission. How does one maintain such a level of faith against such seemingly insurmountable odds? There is an intriguing story in this week’s portion of Behaalotcha: And the people became as mitonenim (complainers), [speaking] evil in the ears of Hashem... (Bamidbar 11:1) Rashi explains that the word mitonenim refers to those who are looking for an excuse to complain, a way to distance themselves from Hashem. Interestingly, Rashi suggests they were complaining about their difficult journey – ‘we have traveled three days without respite!’ And yet Rashi previously understands (ibid. 10:33) that they actually completed a three-day journey in one day because Hashem wanted to bring them into the
Land of Israel immediately. In addition, they had witnessed the splitting of the sea, the Exodus from Egypt, the receiving of the Torah and more, so how could they complain? The reason people have a hard time saying ‘thank you’ is because thanking someone means, on a certain level, that you owe them, and being indebted to others makes us feel we’re no longer in control. Generally, when complaining, people are looking at the cup as half empty, and at the clouds rather than at the silver linings. In addition, unfortunately the target of their complaints is often the source that deserves their trust and gratitude. The Ramban (ibid. 10:35) quotes the Midrash (rabbinic legend) which suggests that when the Jewish people left Mount Sinai they were like “a child running away from school.” Kids struggle with school because they have to give up their freedom, and the receiving of the Torah at Sinai was the epitome of realizing we are no longer in control. Knowing that Hashem runs the world means accepting that we don’t, which is difficult
for some people to accept. In fact, this is true in our personal lives as well. Most arguments make us feel that someone else is imposing their perspective on us and with our acceptance of their opinion we are no longer in control. Understanding this would help us realize that our complaints are futile, that every situation is presented to us as a gift, by no less than Hashem! According to Rashi, the people were looking to distance themselves from Hashem, not because of the journey or any other issue but simply because they didn’t like being told what to do. Accepting that we are not in control is the best way to let go of all the complaints and stresses that hold us back from living a meaningful G-d-filled life. And once you know that Hashem runs the world, then even in a cattle car headed for Treblinka, you can still sing, and believe, with perfect faith. Rabbi Binny Freedman is Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Orayta. He is a member of the Mizrachi Speakers Bureau (www. mizrachi.org/speakers).
Parshat Beha’alotecha:
Craving the Good Life BY GAVRIEL COHN
This week’s sedra tells of the Jewish People’s complaints in the desert. They were dissatisfied with the food, the miraculous manna provided for them and instead “began to have cravings; they began to cry, and they said, ‘Who will feed us meat? We remember the fish we ate in Egypt free of charge, the cucumbers, the watermelons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic.’ As a punishment for their dissatisfaction, their desires and cravings, the camp became swamped with quail birds and the people began to gorge themselves on meat. Then, as the verses so viscerally describe, “as the meat was still between their teeth” the people were struck with a divine plague. This chapter, a tragic story, is often used as a source-text to decry materialism, and to rally against the dangers of the hedonistic “cravings” we may have. Indeed, as many of our rabbis point out, the Jewish people are influenced by
their surroundings (Rambam). Today, Jewish communities in the West have become more acculturated to its modern Consumerist values. As beneficial as they are, we now place more of a focus on material goods and comfort, and are attracted to physical luxuries and “the good life” (Professor Haym Soloveitchik, R’ Aharon Lichtenstein, and others). These desires and drives, our sedra teaches us, are not always constructive, and we must remember not to overindulge ourselves,
not to consume meat for days on end. However, arguably there is another, deeper problem with the Jewish People’s cravings here. They were not just being too focused on materialism or on their physical desires. Crucially, they were sad. As the Ramban writes, “they should have journeyed in the desert with happiness and a content heart, joyful of all that G-d was providing them with.” Instead, the Jewish People wept and cried, and longed deeply for the meat and vegetables that
What led the people to crave for meat was a troubling mindset of unhappiness and discontent. Materialism was not necessarily the issue, but rather a lack of positivity, an up-beat attitude that all is ok. THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
they remembered eating in Egypt. As the chapter relates: “The people were looking to complain... they began to cry, and they said, ‘Who will feed us meat?’... they are crying to Moshe, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat’... the People have despised G-d, and cried before Him…” What led the people to crave for meat was a troubling mindset of unhappiness and discontent. Materialism was not necessarily the issue, but rather a lack of positivity, an up-beat attitude that all is ok. Such a feeling of happiness and joy, a quiet comfortable acceptance of one’s surroundings wherever that may be- be it the desert or the Western world we now live in - and walking with a spring in one’s step, is perhaps all it takes to avoid overindulgence and craving for physical excesses. That is the real “good life.”.

G-d tells Moshe to instruct Aharon, the Kohen Gadol, to light the Menorah every day in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). G-d tells Moshe to appoint the Levi’im to their service in the Mishkan. This involves bringing two animal offerings, the people placing their hands upon the heads of the Levi’im and each Levi being physically lifted in the air and waved by Moshe and Aharon.

PRAYING ALL DAY
One of my less orthodox relatives is amused at one of our grandsons who sits and studies his Hebrew books all day. The relative whose views I am quoting thinks that my grandson spends his day praying. Actually this grandson does daven and say his prayers at the set periods three times a day but as a yeshivah student he spends a lot of time on Talmudic learning. All this links up with this week’s Torah portion in that the portion tells us that a person should constantly kindle lights in honour of G-d. One can take the idea literally but if you choose a metaphorical interpretation you will understand the mitzvah in an ethical
A cloud covers the Mishkan by day, with a fiery appearance at night. The Israelites remain encamped until the cloud lifts, which is the signal to journey on. The duration of time during which the cloud covers the Mishkan varies. G-d tells Moshe to make two silver trumpets to summon the people before travelling in the desert. The trumpets are also to be blown when the nation is at war, in order to evoke Divine mercy, as well as to accompany communal offerings on Shabbat and festival days.
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 10:11-34
In the second year after the Exodus, on 20 Iyar, the cloud lifts and the nation journeys from the Sinai desert to the Paran desert. The Torah describes the order of the tribes’ journeying and the different stages of dismantling and erecting the Mishkan. Moshe asks his father-in-law Yitro, referred to here as Chovav, to join the nation on their journey.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 10:35-11:29
When the Aron (Ark) would start its miraculous journey in front of the nation, Moshe would appeal to G-d to scatter His enemies. The people complain. G-d sends sense as a command to fill the day with deeds of sharing and caring that bring extra light into the A-lmighty’s world. If every deed lights a candle in honour of G-d it makes the world a nicer place.
THE FIRST BORN
The sidra says that every first-born belongs to G-d (Num. 8:17). The Torah does not say why this is so, but the sages all have their explanations. Rashi tells us that the concept is moral and logical (“b’kav ha-din”) because G-d saved the Israelite first-born from the tenth of the Ten Plagues (“makkat b’chorot”) in ancient Egypt and we are showing Him how grateful we are. In Sforno’s view, the idea is anthropological since every culture accords special honour to the first born of every family and indeed of every species.
AARON’S ENTHUSIASM
Opening the sidra, the Torah pays tribute to Aaron the high priest (Num. 8:3) who meticulously carried out the requirement set out by the Almighty. Rashi quotes the Sifrei which says that it is a tribute to Aaron to know that he fulfilled G-d’s command without deviating
a fatal fire against them, until Moshe pleads for mercy on their behalf. The ‘rabble’ then complain about the manna, which does not taste as good as the food in Egypt. G-d is angered. Moshe says he is helpless to deal with the nation’s complaints. G-d tells him to appoint 70 elders to assist in leading the nation. G-d tells Moshe that, in response to their complaints, the nation will be given meat for a whole month, until they are sick of it. The 70 elders are appointed and are given prophetic powers. Point to Consider: Why are there inverted letter ‘nuns’ placed before and after the first verse of this Aliyah? (see Rashi to 10:35)
7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 11:30-12:16
A wind blows quails into the camp. The from the smallest detail. Ramban says that Aaron had children to whom he could have delegated the task but he chose to carry out the mitzvah personally. Another possibility is that Aaron took every mitzvah seriously and performed it with energy and enthusiasm. This is the approach which is enshrined in the meditation which we say at the beginning of many of the practices of Judaism: “Hin’ni muchan um’zumman”, “Behold, I am ready and willing to perform the will of my Creator”.
YITRO’S PERCEPTION.
Moses’ father-in-law Yitro (Jethro) had quite an impact on Israelite history in the wilderness. He told Moses that a leader has to learn to delegate. Otherwise, one ends up with what today is called burn-out. Jethro’s final appearance is this Shabbat in the portion of B’ha’alot’cha, in Num. 10:29-32. Actually, in this passage he is not called Jethro but Chovav, which is another of his seven names. Ramban says that this name, meaning “beloved”, was given to him when he entered the faith of Israel.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
people gather the quails and start eating them, but G-d sends ‘a mighty blow’ against the people for their original complaints. Miriam and Aharon speak negatively about Moshe. G-d rebukes them and Miriam develops a tzara’at skin affliction. Moshe prays for her recovery. Miriam is quarantined outside the camp for seven days, during which the people do not journey.
HAFTARAH
The prophet Zecharia relates a vision in which an angel visits Yehoshua the Kohen Gadol and chastises him, as symbolised by Yehoshua’s soiled garments. The angel also shows Zecharia a menorah and two olives trees to provide oil for lighting it, indicating that the Second Temple will not be built by use of force, but by G-d’s spirit. In verse 31, Moses calls his fatherin-law “our eyes”. Maybe the phrase means “our guide”, but the rabbinic sages understood the word not in a physical but a poetic sense. Jethro, they posited, was well versed in all the then known religions, and recognised – with the eye of intellectual and spiritual perception – that no faith had such an elevated G-d concept as the faith of Israel. He was said to derive from the family of Cain, whose unethical tradition he rejected in favour of the Ten Commandments, which

Blackberry & Spinach Freekeh Salad
Another delicious recipe from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com
Freekeh is a super grain, a wheat that is harvested while young and green. It is roasted over an open fire, the inside grain is firm, slightly chewy and has its own distinct nutty and smoky flavour. It has been a staple grain in the Middle Eastern diets for centuries but is now having an international revival. Loaded with nutrients, high in fibre and protein and low in fat, in fact superior to quinoa but of course not suitable if you are gluten free! Use bulgur wheat as a tasty alternative to freekeh if you can find it! Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes plus cooling time Serves: 4-6
Ingredients 250g freekeh 1 tablespoon vegetable stock powder ~ 75g baby spinach leaves 100g red cabbage – tough core removed, very finely sliced 1 small eating apple – cored and cut into matchsticks ¼ small red onion – sliced wafer thin 15g walnuts pieces – toasted 75g blackberries Dressing: 1 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 ½ tablespoons cider vinegar 90ml extra virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method 1) Put the freekeh and 1 litre water in a pan together with 1 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon vegetable stock powder. 2) Bring to the boil, then turn down and simmer covered for 15 minutes or until just tender. 3) For the dressing – combine all the ingredients together. 4) Bunch the spinach leaves together on a chopping board and slice them finely. 5) When the freekeh is cool, stir in the spinach, cabbage, apple, onion, walnuts and blackberries. 6) Transfer to a serving bowl. 7) Add the dressing, just before serving.
Creative Salads BY DENISE PHILLIPS
A salad can match so many different descriptions; hot, warm cold, with a vast array of ingredients. As plant-based menus become more popular chefs are experimenting with new ingredients, new flavours, textures and even shapes; appealing dressing varieties and classics with a ‘green’ twist. • New lettuce varieties - Beyond the usual romaines and icebergs are the micro- varieties of herbs and micro greens. Micro greens are the seedlings of leafy herbs and plants that are harvested before they grow to full size. It is easy to see why they have become a must-have ingredient. For one thing, they are a simple way to get your five-a-day. They add texture and colour in minute dainty ways to a salad and add finesse as a final garnish. • Power Ingredients – Ingredients that are considered good health options such as chickpeas, edamame, quinoa, ancient grains, nuts, seeds, lean proteins (including eggs), leafy green vegetables such as kale and spinach, butternut squash and berries. • Cheese – speciality cheeses, smoked cheese, artisan cheeses, aged cheddar, and other branded cheese and all the vegan cheeses are entering the salad world! • Contrasting combinations – Contrasting bitter, sweet, spicy, salty, and savoury seems to be extremely popular when building salads. Textural contrasts too work well like smooth and crunchy, crisp and creamy. Combining acidic sliced beetroot and wedged tomatoes or sweet mango with pickled onions are good
examples of contrasting bold colours and flavours. • Using Shapes – This creates interest on the plate and eye-catching impact that can also enhance flavour by allowing better absorption of dressings. Shaving or grating celery root, butternut squash, fennel or carrots works well. Softer vegetables can be spiralized or cut into noodles. Simple knife shapes like julienne or dice can provide great tasting garnishes as do deep fried herbs. • Crunchy Toppings – I love a little crunchy element to my salads. Croutons or bread toppings are tasty - use different types of breads. Nuts too like pistachio, pecans, pine nuts and walnuts especially roasted really ramp up the flavour and crunch factor. Seeds such as sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, sesame and even tortilla chips can add another dimension to the salad to give the wow factor. • Quirky Fruit Salad – add caramelised nuts, artisan chocolates, popcorn, herbs, cubes of cheese. Or add berries to savoury. Alcoholic dressings, candied ginger, courgette ribbons, peaches and macadamia cream can all add a little zing to your fruity mix! • And finally, the dressing – here is another opportunity to add an element of surprise and flavour. Lemon, sesame, soya sauce, chilli, ginger, flavoured vinegars, tahini, nut butters are just some of some many ingredients that can add a distinct flavour and tasty triumph to your salad. Above is my recipe for Blackberry & Spinach freekeh salad

Paperweight Perspective
Life insurance: Don’t leave it too late! BY DOVID POSEN CASEWORKER TEAM LEADER, THE PAPERWEIGHT TRUST
A famous Jewish comedian once said: “Whatever excuses you may have for not buying life insurance now will only sound ridiculous to your widow.” We live in a time where the only thing we can be certain about is uncertainty, and the biggest and most dramatic uncertainty is death. Many people don’t like to think about, let alone discuss their mortality, others are put off contemplating life insurance by a lack of knowledge, convinced it is something that is too expensive or complicated, where in reality, that is not the case. Take for example Mark, a 35-year-old, married to Sarah with two gorgeous kids, Josh and Eve. His career is going in the right direction, but each month it’s becoming a bit more of a financial squeeze. He’s looking where he can make some cuts, whilst trying to stay away from the daily list of depressing news headlines both reporting on and predicting even further doom
and gloom. The last thing Mark wants to think about is adding a further expense of life insurance. He doesn’t have the time to look into it, feels fabulously healthy, (although maybe a bit worn out from schlepping the kids around all their different activities and play dates), so why would he consider it? The problem is that 2-3% of 35-year olds won’t make it to 45. A statistic that obviously gets worse as one gets older. Now, if something G-d forbid happens to Mark, besides the devastation and grief the family will undoubtedly feel, the damage will only be magnified if the family lose a significant part of their income. Who is going to pay the mortgage, the bills, cover everything the kids need? Paperweight knows only too well the fallout of grief; people often need help no matter what their finances look like, but
for those left in the financial lurch, it is a depressingly different picture. Those left behind always have more than enough to deal with, without the additional burden of financial ruin. Obviously, there are different levels of life insurance one could get; different providers and different products, but to keep it simple: £250,000 of cover for a 20-year term can often cost less per month than a Netflix subscription. Granted whilst you personally won’t be able to watch the latest televised goings on in other people’s lives, at least there is the comfort that, should the worst happen, one’s own family’s lives won’t play out like an unfortunate reality show, with people who have no idea how to pay for their next meal. An American journalist once remarked, “Fun is like life insurance; the older you
We live in a time where the only thing we can be certain about is uncertainty, and the biggest and most dramatic uncertainty is death.
get, the more it costs.” Taking life insurance out whilst younger not only protects one’s family straight away, it is also cheaper per month the younger you start. A balance has to be found for the length of term and level to insure, but there is nothing stopping you later in life taking out a larger policy for a longer term as a top up, when not only you may have more financial responsibilities, but also perhaps the means to pay for the increased policy. Meanwhile, not delaying and taking out at least some level of cover could be one of the most important things one ever does for your family. There is nothing we wouldn’t do for our children; we can dedicate our whole lives to making their lives better, encourage them to become better people and make them appreciate how much we love them and how special they are, both to us and to the world. However, delaying taking life insurance could literally shape the lives of the children left behind. We pray that we should always be healthy as well as financially stable; we may not have control of how things turn out but we certainly have to do our part.

Beha’alotcha Beha’alotcha Word Search Our parsha is jam packed this week! At first, Aharon is upset that the nesiim get to offer korbonos not him, during the opening of the mishkan. He’s worried Hashem is still angry over the eigel//golden calf. But Hashem speaks to him and reassures him that Aharon has a much greater job, he gets to light the menorah every single day. Over the last few parshiot, we saw that the Leviim have been chosen to do holy work for the Mishkan, now they swap places with the firstborns and are ready to get down to work. It’s the first Pesach in the Midbar!! Moshe and Aharon teach the people on the laws, the korbon pesach is offered up and everyone is munching on it at their seder. Suddenly, a group of men come to Moshe and Aharon, very upset. Do you remember that Yosef’s dying wish was to be taken with and buried in Israel? These are the men that carry his coffin but that makes them tamaai, impure. A tammai person cannot join in the korban pesach. It’s not fair! They also want to join! Moshe goes to ask Hashem and Hashem gives us a new mitzvah, every year, one month after Pesach we have Pesach Sheini. If a person was tamaai he can bring the korban then. Now we set off for the Holy Land with the clouds of glory protecting us. No car can boast the comfort, air-conditioning and plush, carpeted feel of the holy clouds! It’s also like being wrapped in a giant hug from Hashem! But not everyone wants to come. Yisro, Moshe’s father in law wants to leave, he is a ger/convert and wont inherit the land. Moshe convinces him to stay because Klal Yisrael will look after him.
When they leave, after all the love Hashem has showered them with – they leave so quickly it’s like running away! But Hashem ignores it, so to speak, for now. Then the Eruv Rav push too far, whining, complaining and begging to stop or slow down. Hashem sends a fire to take care of them and Klal Yisrael are terrified it will burn them too! Moshe gets the people to do teshuvah for their hasty departure and it sinks into the ground. Peace at last, but not for long! The eruv rav are at it again, making people feel bad about the special, yummy maan, we want real meat!, We want meat! Moshe doesn’t know what to do, how will I find meat to feed the whole Klal Yisrael?! Hashem sort of tells him off. It’s My problem because they are My children and nothing is too hard for Me. He tells Moshe that meat will fall from the sky, lots of it, lots and lots. The people will not be able to resist eating but it will poison the people who made everyone else complain! Moshe warns the people not to ask for meat because Hashem will give it but it will kill them. The eruv rav don’t listen to Moshe’s warning and demand to see this meat and sure enough it kills them. Then we pick new zekeinim. Miriam then tells Aharon that she is worried about their brother Moshe and something he is doing. Hashem suddenly appears to defend Moshe, saying that he is the most humble man who ever lived and so won’t tell you that he is also the greatest prophet who will ever live .He gives Miriam with Tzaraas for her lashon harah. Out of gratitude to her, Klal Yisrael wait for her until she can rejoin the camp before moving on.

The Long List

ma sighed as she looked at her long list of things to do in her black notepad. I neve seem to be able to get it all done, she thought sadly. She reviewed her long list while she finished her late breakfast, mentally making a note of the most important ones for that day. Ima had just started working on the first load of laundry for the day when she heard a wail from upstairs. Shloime had woken up early from his nap. Ima stopped what she was doing and headed upstairs, her plans for the next few hours now in disarray. Meanwhile, at school Chaim was looking in despair at a long list of questions. It was a science lesson to do with gravity and they had to do some experiments and answer the questions on the sheet, but Chaim couldn’t understand how he was going to get it all done. The lesson was only an hour long, how could he do all the experiments in time? Chaim decided he wasn’t going to even try to get the work done. What was the point? He would never finish it anyway. That night after supper, Ima got a phone call from Chaim’s science
teacher. After Ima had spoken to Abba alone, they called Chaim into the dining room to speak with him. “Chaim, what happened in science class today?” Ima asked with concern. “Well, the question paper for the gravity experiments was much too long so I decided not to do it.” Chaim replied, shrugging. “Hmm,” said Abba. “Why did you decide not to even try?” “Because there was no point. I knew I was never going to finish it, so why

bother trying,” answered Chaim. “I have an idea…,” Ima said as she left the room. After a minute, she returned with her trusty, black notepad. “Chaim, please come and look at this,” Ima said, opening her notebook and showing Chaim the latest page. “This is my notebook of things I have to do and as you can see there are a lot of items on the list. There are all the regular chores around the house and also other larger more irregular tasks like
appointments and shopping for clothes.” Chaim nodded as he stared at the long list. “Now, I want you to look at how many things I managed to get done today, compared to how many items are on the list.” Chaim counted under his breath and said, “you’ve managed three out of twenty items!” Chaim’s voice ended in surprise. “It doesn’t sound very much.” “You are right,” replied Ima. “I had much more planned to do today. But Hashem kept me very busy with Shloime and so I didn’t manage to get everything done. However, this is the point. Just because I knew I wouldn’t get it all done, didn’t stop me from trying to get some of it done.” “You mean,” said Chaim thoughtfully. “That you didn’t just give up because it looked too much, you still tried to get some done.” “Exactly,” said Ima. “And if you look on your bed right now, you’ll see a freshly washed and dried pair of pyjamas that I washed today. Had I given up on my list, those wouldn’t have been ready and you would have had to wear an old pair.” “Wow!” said Chaim. “I never thought of it like that. Thank you for explaining it to me, I will bear it in mind for the future.”

Nigeria will not participate but will benefit from membership by developing their sports recovery programmes. The new community structure for the Foundation enables access by member nations’ wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans to the wider programme of activity. Activities are available all year round and allow smaller nations or nations newer to sport recovery programmes to experience the power of sport, esports and adventurous challenge ahead of future participation in a Games. Prince Harry was inspired to bring the Invictus Games to London after visiting the Warrior Games in America 2013. The Duke of Sussex founded the Games as it is an important part of a broader legacy of support, through on-going care, training and employment opportunities, to the well-being of men and women who have served their country. The Foundation was set up post London 2014 to oversee the delivery of the Games and continue to support its international community. S E LIV Match Giving Campaign 19.06.2022 | 36 hours
Jewish Child’s Day is the UK’s leading Jewish grant-giving charity. We were founded in 1947 to support Jewish children across the world that had recently endured the decimation of their communities and displacement during the Second World War. Today, we remain dedicated to transforming the lives of Jewish children in need worldwide and are celebrating 75 years of this vital work. Each year, more than 19,000 Jewish children rely on us to save them from disadvantage, deprivation, abuse and neglect through a range of projects focussing on Health, Equipment, Education, Activities and Therapy. Since the start of the pandemic, the number of grant applications we receive has doubled. Meanwhile, the costs our partners face to provide their specialised care for children has increased as a result of Covid-19, the ongoing war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis. That is why we are launching our ‘Transforming Lives’ Match Giving campaign on Sunday 19th June. Your help is urgently needed to increase Jewish Child’s Day’s financial assistance for our partners here in the UK and across the globe. With your support, during the 36 hours of our campaign, we can transform the lives of even more children in need, through even more projects, in even more locations. TOGETHER, we can transform the lives of Jewish children in need worldwide!
