BORIS JOINS WEST BANK WAR OF WORDS 18 JUNE 2020/26 SIVAN 5780

@TheJewishWeekly 146

BY DAVID SAFFER

The war of words over Israel’s West Bank annexation plans next month has escalated. The United Nations and leaders of numerous countries, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson, have criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s aspirations regarding settlements and the Jordan Valley. Jordanian King Abdullah II has warned of Middle East stability being threatened. Criticism has been intense whenever Netanyahu has stated the unity government’s intentions. Johnson swerved a question regarding possible sanctions against Israel in the House of Commons on Tuesday, but did view Israel’s proposition as a “breach” of international law. “We have strongly objected,” he said. “We believe profoundly in a two-state solution and we will continue to make that case.”

UN human rights experts claimed this week that Netanyahu would be violating international law. Some 50 signatories to a joint statement called on countries to oppose plans and slammed the United States for backing Netanyahu’s “unlawful” plan. “The annexation of occupied territory is a serious violation of the Charter of the United Nations and the Geneva Conventions, and contrary to the fundamental rule affirmed many times by the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly that the acquisition of territory by war or force is inadmissible,” they noted. “The United Nations has stated on many occasions that the 53-year-old Israeli occupation is the source of profound human rights violations against the Palestinian people,” the statement added. “These human rights violations would only intensify after annexation.”

Francis charged with attempted murder of Rabbi BY DAVID SAFFER Stanley Francis has been charged with attempted murder following a horrific stabbing incident of a local Rabbi in Stoke Newington last Friday. The 44-year old local man, who appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Monday, was also charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. Metropolitan Police Service are considering a hate crime motive against Francis. Rabbi Alter Yaakov Schlesinger, who is in his 50s and a father of children, suffered stab wounds in “broad daylight” and was taken to hospital. Miraculously his condition is not life-threatening. “This was a shocking attack that suddenly happened and the victim could easily have been murdered,” Mark Gardner, Director of Communications, Community Security Trust. “We need to wait for the Police and the Crown Prosecution Service to formally decide if it was motivated by anti-Semitism, but when a Jew is nearly killed in a busy street it is hard for anyone to say that this had no part in what happened.” He added, “We ask that our community remain aware of the potential for such violence to suddenly occur, whether it is criminal, down to mental health, or somehow connected to political ideology actually makes little difference when any of us can be

day, a rabbi. It is therefore right that the police are considering a hate crime motive in their investigation.” CAA added, “Violent attacks against Jews in some areas of London have become unacceptably routine, and culprits must be subjected to the full force of the law. We urge the community to remain vigilant and ask that anyone with information about this attack contacts us or the police.” When police arrived at the scene last Friday, they found the suspect being restrained by members of the public. A witness present at the scene reportedly said, “The person who stabbed a charedi (orthodox Jewish man) got off a bus, he crossed the street, he went to the line which was waiting outside to get into the bank, there

Rabbi Aryeh Shmuel Deutsch and his son in law, Rabbi Shlomo Birnhak were among 10 people travelling to the simcha when a 2009 Ford Econoline veered off a major road and struck a tree. Both suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead after being transported to hospital. Hatzolah paramedics arrived at the scene where they discovered a number of passengers trapped in the van. were ten people, this one was charedi, and he went straight and stabbed only the charedi. Why didn’t he go for anyone else? My assumption is 100 percent it was a hate crime.” Ambulance and police crews were called to assess Rabbi Schlesinger on Stoke Newington High Street. Francis was detained on suspicion of attempted murder. DS James Tipple, from Hackney CID, said, “The victim was stabbed in broad daylight as he went about his business. He suffered multiple stab wounds in what was a horrific incident and will undoubtedly stay with him for a long time to come. “We’re conducting extensive enquiries into this attack and have been gathering evidence. However, I know many people saw this attack and, if anyone has any footage or information about this incident, please come forward and tell us what you know.” Met Police said they were “maintaining an open mind” about the motive. The horror incident appeared on social media shortly after the stabbing. CAA analysis of Home Office statistics shows an average of over three hate crimes are directed at Jews every day in England and Wales. Jews are almost four times more likely to be targets of hate crimes than any other faith group. Anyone with information should contact the police on 101 or CAA on 0330 822 0321 (selecting option 2).

Etihad’s second aid flight to Israel Etihad Airways has made a second humanitarian flight to Israel delivering medical aid to the Palestinians yesterday. The flight was part of the ongoing coronavirus battle. UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process coordinated a shipment last month but Palestinian authorities refused as it was not coordinated correctly. It is unclear what happened to the shipment. The flight from Abu Dhabi will again be cargo-only. “Etihad Airways continues to operate humanitarian flights providing much-needed aid to nations within its network and beyond,” a spokesman said. The carrier made an historic aid flight from Abu Dhabi to Ben-Gurion Airport last month, the first direct commercial flight between the nations.

Board launches new commission The Board of Deputies has launched a Commission on Racial Inclusivity in the Jewish community. The initiative follows global condemnation following the racist killing of George Floyd in Minnepolis last month. Black British Jews and other Jews of colour will be invited to give evidence, anonymously if

preferred, about experiences in the community. Discussions will also take place with synagogues, schools, youth movements, cultural spaces and Jewish institutions on best practice and challenges. The Commission will produce a report with recommendations then follow up on actions taken.

The anti-Semitic dark side of Paris demonstrations “As in last year’s infiltration of the ‘Yellow Vests’ demonstrations by antisemitic, ant-Zionist and Holocaust denying neo-Nazis, so yesterday, Jew-hatred was exposed at the rally inspired by ‘Black Lives Matter’, in an around the Place de la République in Paris,” stated the Simon Wiesenthal Centre Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels. Right-wing extremists unfolded a provocative banner from the rooftop of one of the surrounding buildings, whereas some in the Square responded screaming “Juifs sales!” (“Filthy Jews”) and chanting “Vive la Palestine!” Stickers on lamp-posts, printed for the occasion, blared: Palestine : terres volées, civils bombardés, enfants torturés... qui est le terroriste ? (Palestine: land stolen,

civilians bombed, children tortured... Who is the terrorist?) La Palestine aux Palestiniens ! Boycott Israel ! (Palestine for the Palestinians! Boycott Israel!) Stop à la collaboration avec le terrorisme d’état israélien (Stop collaboration with Israeli State terrorism) The Centre has requested the Paris Municipality to clear such anti-Israel political stickers… but, during this period prior to upcoming Mayoral elections, there has been little response from the authorities. “We therefore call upon the leaders of ‘Black Lives Matter’ to publicly condemn antisemitism, whether from extreme right or far left infiltration into their movement,” concluded Samuels.

Orthodox shuls shun Covid advice BY DAVID SAFFER

Machzikei Hadass in Manchester this week

Prof warns of second Covid wave in Israel BY DAVID SAFFER Israel’s growing number of coronavirus cases may signal a second wave of the deadly disease Public Health Services head Prof. Siegal Sadetzk warned this week. The Health Ministry confirmed over 300 fatalities across Israel at the time of going to press. Coronavirus National Information and Knowledge Center officials announced almost 300 new cases in a 24-hour period for the first time. The centre is part of IDF’s Security and Intelligence Division. Ignoring measures is a key reason for a spike in numbers. “When you look at it, it looks like the beginning of a wave,” she said. “The main question today is, to what extent we are determined to be aware of social distancing, masks, hygiene, and nonconformity (to regulations). Prof. Siegal Sadetzk added, “We can see that without it, the disease returns.” Prof. Sadetzk said the rise in infections was different to the first wave. Since the

economy reopened, Israel has seen new virus patients doubling daily. “We anticipated the first wave, we were prepared for it,” Sadetzki explained to Knesset members. “Of course, there have been unexpected issues, but we knew to look for patients among those returning from abroad and to conduct epidemiological investigations. Most patients were already in isolation. Now a large number of the infections are among students, which is not something we saw in the first wave.” Sadetzki added that the public did not understand guidelines. “The layout of the directives is very complex, and I don’t think it’s a form that the public can abide by,” she explained. Asked if an increase in patient numbers was not due to an increase in tests. The professor acknowledged the fact, but contended, “There is morbidity in 57 communities, it’s not something we can ignore. It means there are more patients than we have located, and to me that is worrying.” Yesh Atid MK Mickey Levy accused

A worrying number of ultra-orthodox shuls across the United Kingdom are ignoring government advice about holding religious services. Pictures have emerged of shuls, some observing social distancing measures others shunning advice, clearly in a minyan format to the consternation of community leaders. First-hand accounts of services have also been related about prayers in shuls and satellite venues. Government measures allow places of worship to reopen for private prayer only (if a shul wants to) and from July 4th, at the earliest, worshippers may be given the green light to daven in a public minyan but must adhere to social distancing rules. Sadetzki of generating panic. “It’s an increase, but it’s not significant,” he said. “Be careful about how you conduct yourselves, do your part, but relax.” Sadetzi replied, “It is my duty to reflect the data as I see it. “We are experiencing an increase in the number of cases and also in the nature of the cases. There is no hysteria here, there is a warning here.” Among increased numbers, Tel Aviv is central to a new outbreak. Many cases have been traced to a Jaffa neighbourhood and Tel Aviv’s Levinsky market where the infection rate is twice the national average. Employees at Ichilov Hospital Palace and a nursing home also tested positive. Tel Aviv though is behind the ultra-Orthodox communities of Bnei Brak and Beit Shemesh. The Ministry of Education, meantime, has begun preparations for remote and

Sadly however, most ultra-orthodox shuls in the UK have resumed minyanim under the guise of personal prayer only. Popular weekly pamphlets have also announced a resumption of services which can be picked up in various shuls and mikva’ot. Since lockdown began it has been blatantly obvious that many minyanim and countless public simchas have taken place with a disregard for distancing measures. There has been huge criticism of government regulations regarding shuls from ultra-orthodox communities. Many people feel that opening a shul for private prayer only is essentially pointless as this can take place at home. The major issue orthodox people have is that you can shop with dozens of customers around you not wearing masks or sit on a packed tube train in a confined space with no fresh air, yet you

can’t sit in a shul to pray to G-d in a safe manner. There is a growing feeling that there is one rule for work or shopping and quite another for religion. Government rules for many people quite simply does not make sense. The British Jewish community is approaching 500 deaths where the deceased contracted Covid-19. Latest burial board information across Jewish communities detail 497 Jewish funerals carried out as of last Friday. That figure could sadly hit the landmark 500 figure in statistics released tomorrow. “Every loss is a tragedy,” commented the Board of Deputies who compile the figures. “We are clearly seeing a reduction in weekly numbers, but vigilance must be maintained so that numbers do not start to rise again.” The Board liaises with the largest denominational burial boards to collate an indicator of deaths where Covid-19 was a factor. Organisations include The Adath Yisroel Burial Society, Federation of Synagogues Burial Society, Joint Jewish Burial Board, Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi Community and United Synagogue Burial Society.

Comparable figures are available from the Board of Deputies on request. The United Synagogue has been praised for its careful handling of the coronavirus crisis. Officials have been clear regarding a resumption of religious services under wide ranging safety guidelines. The Board has asked for “vigilance” but pockets of Jewish communities from London to Manchester and areas in the North East are risking a spike in Covid cases. Concerns are not scaremongering but a real threat. The US follows a Covid safe environment highlighting measures with rapid shut-down plans if a suspected coronavirus case is among congregants. The ‘R’ rate also impacts on planning. Communities must give attention to aveilim, those with yahrtzeit and simchas. Nobody should feel pressurised to attend a service to make up a minyan. Communities are also asked not to hold kiddushim, support or publicise minyanim or services in members’ homes. Sifrei Torah may not be loaned. Children under 12 meantime should not attend. Staggered starts for minyanim are meant to be considered along with social distancing.

classroom learning in the next school year. Both options will be in place. Officials to end schools closing when one positive coronavirus case is diagnosed. In the midst of uncertainty, outgoing Health Ministry director general Moshe Bar-Siman-Tov called on citizens to follow guidelines as a lockdown might not be as effective in a second wave. Bar-Siman-Tov resigned after mounting public pressure of “fear-mongering” regarding tough measures to combat the pandemic. “We’re definitely at risk of a renewed outbreak,” he said. “I think we shouldn’t tackle the new wave with lockdowns, it’s going to be different from the previous wave and we should act accordingly.” He added, “The outbreak could be prevented if the public follows the rules, and I have a feeling that we’ve been seeing a blessed change in this matter in recent days. We can deal with this without the steps we had to take last time, I trust the Israeli public to succeed to take the required steps, they are not that complicated. I understand the sense of burnout in dealing with the disease, but the virus is not over, so we must persevere.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once again has called on Israelis to respect guidelines by Health Ministry as the number of infections continues to be a “red flag”. “A study by the University of Cambridge and the University of Greenwich, showed that wearing masks is a very effective way to prevent further outbreaks. The study found the use of masks by half of the population would lower the transmission coefficient to below one.”

Netanyahu added that reopening the economy would benefit industries hardest hit by the lockdown. Eilat is to receive a NIS 50 million aid program. “We will work to strengthen tourism in the area,” he noted. “Domestic tourism will partially replace foreign tourism.” In related news, the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, meantime, is debating the government’s emergency regulations law to extend the coronavirus pandemic fight. There is no legal authority to restrict gatherings, quarantine enforcement, checking temperature or wearing mask in public places. Emergency regulations expire within three months unless legislation is passed. Elsewhere, the United Arab Emirates and Israel could work together on battling the coronavirus. Pandemic cooperation does not affect UAE’s opposition to political issues including annexation. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Anwar Gargash, made the comments during an American Jewish Committee conference this week. AJC described the Q&A as “historic”. “Can I have a political disagreement with Israel but at the same time try and bridge other areas of the relationship? I think I can and I think this is fundamentally where we are,” Gargash said. Israel has no diplomatic relations with Gulf Arab countries. However two UAE planes have landed at Ben Gurion airport on humanitarian flights for the Palestinians.

Bibi calls for Iran sanctions Urban Dictionary deletes anti-Semitic definitions BY SIMCHA ABIR

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on the international community to join the United States in re-imposing “paralysing” sanctions on Iran. Netanyahu’s intervention followed a military strike on pro-Iranian sites in an eastern suburb of Deir ez-Zor Syria, near the Iraqi border earlier this month. A reported 12 operatives, all Iraqi and Afghani members of pro-Iranian soldiers, were killed. Vehicles and ammunition were also destroyed. UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights could not identify the aircraft. The operation followed an airstrike in Hama used to develop weapons by Syrian defence industries. The site near Hezbollah bases is believed to be a part of the terror group’s effort to upgrade rockets to precision-guided missiles. The IDF has not confirmed the strikes. “Iran has systematically violated its commitments by hiding sites and enriching

fissionable material, and has committed other violations,” Netanyahu noted. “The time has come for the international community to join the US and reimpose paralysing sanctions on Iran.” Netanyahu added, “Israel will not allow Iran to achieve nuclear weapons and will continue to act methodically against Iran’s attempts to militarily entrench on our borders.” The International Atomic Energy Agency has stated that Iran has increased stockpiles of enriched uranium by over 50 per cent over the past three months and remains in violation of the nuclear deal. US President Trump pulled out of a unilateral deal in 2018. Iran signed the JCPOA deal in 2015 with the US, UK, Germany, France, China and Russia allowing Iran to stockpile 202.8 kilograms. An UN-backed arms embargo on Iran ends on 18 October. The US is hoping to renew the UN Security Council ban on selling conventional arms to Iran.

IDF briefs WJC over Zoom BY NATALIE ASH Israel Defense Forces international spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus briefed Jewish lay leaders in a global zoom World Jewish Congress conference last week. Over 120 WJC-affiliated communities participated in the briefing, the latest in a series of virtual WJC events since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lt. Col. Conricus shared insights regarding Israel’s actions to flatten the coronavirus curve while continuing normal defense operations. The IDF has served as a primary institution in dealing with the pandemic. Lt. Col. Conricus reported that no active IDF soldiers had died or been in critical condition. The IDF has observed quarantine regulations.

Among the biggest challenges that the IDF and Israeli government had faced has been setting regulations and educating citizens. Information is provided in six languages, an IDF-controlled call center and food distribution system has been established. The IDF have donated over 13,000 pints of blood to help those affected by the virus, developed, manufactured and distribute ventilators to treat COVID-19. Ambulances were also retrofitted to compress oxygen and carry virus-infected patients safely. Despite this work, derogatory campaigns have emerged insisting that Israel has provided no assistance to Palestinians in the West Bank or Gaza strip. Lt. Col. Conricus explained there has been ongoing cooperation with the Palestinians.

goes’ philosophy to promote their extremist views,” said Dr Allington said. “It wouldn’t matter so much if it were an obscure website that nobody had heard of, but Urban Dictionary is one of the most popular websites in the world and it carries adverts for household name brands.” Urban Dictionary is “replete with antisemitic, racist and needlessly offensive entries,” said Stephen Silverman, Director of Investigations and Enforcement at CAA. “We intend to maintain this pressure in the hope that the people behind Urban Dictionary will do the decent thing and clean up their website once and for all.” Mr Silverman welcomed news that several brands had taken swift action to remove their advertisements from Urban Dictionary after being contacted by CAA. “They agree the website is not an appropriate venue for their marketing publicity,” he explained.

An interactive refugee story game

A scene from the game

The National Holocaust Centre & Museum launched “The Journey” - a new interactive story game, available as an iPad app. Based on their highly popular walk-through museum exhibition on the theme of the Kindertransport, it is designed for Key Stage 2 children at Primary School (Years 5&6/ages 9-11). A wonderful creative initiative combining rich narrative, app interactivity and high production values, this story game follows the life of young German Jewish boy Leo in Nazi Berlin between 1933-38. It is downloadable from Apple from 15th June and will be available on Android later in the summer. There will be a series of 7 public Twitter and Facebook Live events and closed Zoom events for schools, during National Refugee Week on 14th, 17th, 18th and 19th June including one in conjunction with Jewish cultural centre JW3. Topics include Refugeeism and Storytelling Creativity in Education. [Public event panellists include the author Miriam Halahmy, Arts Council Director of Innovation Nicola Saunders, award-winning games producer Martha Henson, human rights lawyer Margaret Finch, AJR Director of Education Alex Maws and the Holocaust survivors Joan Salter and Ruth Barnett.]

Netanyahu made the announcement following a meeting in Jerusalem. Mitsotakis, on his first trip abroad since the onset of the pandemic crisis was joined by a cabinet delegation to demonstrate confidence in health measures and to promote a trilateral natural-gas consortium with Cyprus. Greece has reopened airports to mainly EU visitors. Around 1.2 million Israelis travel to Greece annually. Netanyahu hopes travellers will not have to self-quarantine but any decision depends on the coronavirus pandemic. “If numbers allow it, this is the target date for opening the skies,” he told reporters. Greece, Israel and Cyprus are partnered on energy projects. Mitsotakis warned against Turkey’s “aggressive behaviour”, citing “recent incidents” at sea, air and land borders. He also noted a “destabilising effect” by Turkey in its relationship with Libya. Israel, meantime, is looking for support from Greece regarding West Bank annexation. “We expect Greece to be an anchor of support for us in the Union,” Yossi Amrani, Israeli Ambassador to Athens, told Israel’s Army Radio.

El Al has extended its suspension of passenger flights until July 31. The carrier is making cargo and occasional passenger flights but yesterday’s news is a blow to 90% of its 6,300 employees who have been on unpaid leave since March. It had been hoped that all flights could resume at the beginning of next month. El Al notified Tel Aviv Stock Exchange of its decision. Foreign travellers are banned from travelling to Israel and returning Israelis from abroad must go into enforced 14 days self-isolation. Whilst Covid measures are in place El Al will continue to be grounded for foreign flights. The statement was not a surprise though as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to open borders with Greece and Cyprus from August if Covid-19 cases are under control. The government has held talks with El Al and Knafaim Holdings about a $250 million bailout loan.

Rashford forces u-turn on food voucher scheme

Marcus Rashford

PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA

BY ADAM MOSES Jewish children will benefit from a £120m ‘Covid summer school fund’ food voucher thanks to Manchester United star Marcus Rashford. The England international backed a campaign for a six-week extension for 1.3million vulnerable children eligible to free school meals during term time in England. The Department for Education had refused but relented after pressure from Rashford for a rethink. Drawing on his childhood experiences, the Premier League star posted an open letter to MPs on Monday, explaining how he benefitted from free school meals and food banks. Rashford said his story was “all too familiar for families in England”. After the government u-turn yesterday, a delighted Rashford, 22, tweeted, “THIS is England in 2020.” Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed Rashford’s contribution to the “debate around poverty”. Commenting on Rashford’s intervention, he added, “The PM welcomes his contribution to the debate around poverty and respects the fact that he has been using his profile as a leading sportsman to highlight important issues.” The initiative equates to £15 a week per recipient for a meal. Labour leader Keir Starmer said the move was a “welcome U-turn” in the House of Commons. Provision was set to continue during the summer in Scotland and Wales but not England and Northern Ireland. It would end following the summer term next month. When Rashford called for the voucher scheme to be extended in England, he asked people to think about struggling parents having “water turned off” in lockdown and children going hungry. Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey was widely criticised when she replied that water “could not” be disconnected. Johnsons’ spokesman said the extended scheme was a “specific measure” during a unique time. Rashford tweeted “we aren’t beaten yet”, adding, “MPs, please #maketheUturn”. Qualifying families have received vouchers or parcels during the lockdown since March. Official figures show that school children in England represent around 15% of state-educated pupils eligible for free school meals. The greatest need is in parts of London, the north and Midlands.

Villains of Jewish history BY JAMES MARLOW Allow me please to weigh in on the racist statute debate, because there are so many that come to mind. The English playwright’s, William Shakespeare 1564-1616 and Christopher Marlowe (no relation) 1564-1593, were reported to have been anti-Semitic, and not just based on their poems. Let’s remove their books. Henry Ford 1863-1947, Walt Disney 1901-1966, and Bing Crosby 1926-1977 are remembered as great achievers, but many have testified over the years, they were anti-Semitic. Sling the motors cars, movies and music into the river. How about the monument of Bogdan Chmielnicki, which stands proudly in Kiev, Ukraine. For those who don’t know, in the years 1648 and 1649, Chmielnicki led the Russian Cossacks in an attack that led to the murder of 300,000 Jews. His monument has to go. In Cumbria, the statue of King Edward I stands tall. But he expelled the Jews from England in 1290. His statue must come down. Outside of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster is Richard the Lionheart. When the time came for the coronation of King Richard, it was bad news for the Jews of England, who were barred from the ceremony.

The Jews of London were then plundered and murdered, while their houses were burned down. Attacks on Jews then spread to other English cities. This nasty pogrom sparked by the coronation means that this famous statue should be rolled into the Thames. William the Conqueror and his apartheid regime banned Jews from owning land. His statue is in Northern France. Who wants to topple that one? There are images of King Henry III all over London and England, including outside Kings College. King Henry passed the 1253 Statute of Jewry Act, in response to the growing anti-Semitic feeling, which banned construction of synagogues and forced Jews to wear a badge. How can we expect Jewish students to walk under such a figure at KCL? Did you know that St Aldates and Christ Church in Oxford are built on the ruins of the old Jewish quarter? Perhaps we should rename these streets, “Jewry Place.” Karl Marx wrote about the Jewish vermin and described Jews as money grabbers and that the world would never be at peace until this “ill” was dwelt with. His statue is in Highgate, London. The Emperor Hadrian of the Roman army has a bronze head in many cities across Europe, but he tortured and killed thousands of Jews. All of his heads should be sprayed with red paint and the Hadrian wall needs to fall.

As for Clement Attlee’s Imperialist Government, they stopped many boats full of Holocaust refugees from reaching Jewish Palestine. I know he introduced the NHS into Britain, but still, he denied a nation returning to its land. In Spain, the murderous King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella have statues proudly on display in Andalusia, Southern Spain. The pair of them massacred and tortured so many Jews in the late 1400s, until the final expulsion of 1492. An estimated 1.5 to 2 million Jewish people died travelling, mostly barefoot to other countries. We must remove those statutes. Karl Lueger was the anti-Semitic Mayor of Vienna and despite having a statue in the city, his picture is on the wall of some cafes and restaurants in the city. We have to boycott those eating establishments. King Louis IX of France burned 24 wagonloads of Jewish manuscripts in Paris, including all known copies of the Talmud and other priceless Jewish commentaries. His statue is in the American State of Missouri, but should really be thrown into the ocean. What about the tunes of the anti-Semitic Richard Wagner and his statue that sits proudly today in Berlin? Wagner was one of Hitler’s favourite artists. How do you think Jews feel about this? Martin Luther called Jews “a base whoring people,” “a den of devils,” “nothing but

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

18 JUNE 2020 thieves and robbers who daily eat no morsel and wear no thread of clothing which they have not stolen and pilfered from us, by means of their accursed usury.” I am not going to go through the list of the many anti-Semitic Popes throughout history, because that will bore you. But until fairly recently, the Vatican had absolutely no respect for any Jewish clergy or Jews in general and still today, insist on keeping their WWII history locked away in a vault. So when you ask me how I would feel, if a statue of Hitler was on display, I say, there are enough statues and monuments across the west that represent mass Jewish oppression, persecution and ethnic cleaning. And as a practising Jew, if we were to take down all of these symbols of discrimination and genocide, not a stone, monument or flag would remain anywhere in the West or even in the Islamic countries. Sadly we have to accept that human history is full of brutality and exploitation. But if we wish to move forward and make progress, we have to remember the past and not pretend it never existed. OPEN OUR SHULS! Dear Editor, Since 26 March citizens of this country have been denied access to their places of worship for community prayer. For the first six weeks of lockdown the restriction was understandable. The U K, like most other countries, was committed above all to combatting the ravages of the pandemic. Since then, as the spread of the virus has reduced, numerous targets of lockdown have been released -- from places of work to garden centres, car showrooms, schools and shops. But not places of worship. The only gesture towards places of worship has been the allowance, from 15 June, to enter into them for “individual prayer”. This half-hearted concession, for which there has been no coherent explanation, is next to useless, as for most faiths the key feature of a place of worship is prayer with a congregation. Though a solid supporter of this Government, I have to say that its attitude to religious needs during this pandemic has been most disappointing. Respect for faith freedom and the promotion of traditional values used to be key foundations of Conservative Party philosophy. More recently they have fallen markedly down the list of priorities. The millions in this country to whom faith is indispensable have been patiently awaiting Government relaxations, relying largely on assurances from community leaders that the matter was in hand and

the Government was listening. Alas, for all the assurances, there have as yet been no tangible results. The only efforts that have noticeably achieved anything are those of the Catholic clergy, without whose outspoken demands the doors of every law-abiding place of worship would probably still be locked. It is high time a forthright initiative were taken by members of the public. We live in a democracy, yet faith needs are being neglected. I would urge all members of our community, especially Rabbinical leaders, to take the relatively short time required to e mail three letters- to the Prime Minister (boris.johnson.mp@parliament.uk), Communities Secretary (robert.jenrick.mp@ parliament.uk) and their local Member of Parliament (similar e mail format to the foregoing for every MP). The simple, respectful request should be to restore community prayer in places of worship without further delay, and certainly by the next official lockdown announcement on July 4. Social distancing and other appropriate safeguards will of course have to be strictly implemented. This is the least everyone can do. If there is a mass letter-writing lobby by thousands of people, it is far more likely the desired result will be swiftly achieved. Remember – Religious Lives Matter!

Getting support for our community’s most vunerable OPED BY NEIL TAYLOR FROM LANGDON Langdon has now tragically lost three of its cherished members during the Covid crisis and they will live long in our memories. They were people who were part of a community that went to college, worked, lived and socialised together. They found friendships and confidantes where they could not find it anywhere else. They were deeply valued and appreciated for what they contributed to the Langdon community. Their full stories however will not be widely known because they were not given the opportunity to live their lives to the full and because they only represent a tiny group of individuals amongst 50,000 plus people who have lost their lives over the past few weeks. The story that is not heard, as the response to the pandemic has been focused on care homes for older people, is that in just over a month 386 people with a learning disability, some of whom may also be autistic, who were receiving care from support providers have died. This is a 134% increase in the number of death notifications this year. It brings into sharp focus that people of working age who have a disability are also

very much at risk, particularly of respiratory illness. As the roll out of the testing programme has not been responsive to the needs of people with learning disability, nor supportive of the services they receive, once again we are reminded that they are not a priority. Our members’ voices are dim in the cacophony of noise as organisations compete for resources. Their families have had to fight for the right support and worry every day that this support will be available, safe and quality in nature. So why should they have to fight so hard for their voice to be heard, for their presence to be valued and why do families have to anticipate that they will have to fight for their kin for the rest of their lives? While well above 40% of Langdon members are in paid employment, only 7% of learning disabled adults across the country have the opportunity to do so. Langdon members are full of vigour and vitality, they are creative and fun to be with, they have a lot to say and a lot to contribute, they believe in social justice and they have strong personal identities. They want to work, rest and play and they want to be given the opportunity to thrive and they want to live long and fulfilled lives. Let’s make that a priority.

Bnos Beis Yaakov shines Zacks Go Purple on their 300 mile challenge for during lockdown Bnos Beis Yaakov (BBY) has been busier than ever ensuring their girls have daily structure throughout lock down. BBY was initially unsure regarding the use of Zoom, as screens are generally not encouraged. However, the girls are benefitting from the classroom like structure, as well as the continued teacher pupil interaction and the obvious social aspects. BBY has come up with exciting initiatives to counter the inevitable time spent in front of the computer. Some examples of the above are whole school P.E challenges where each class is sent a new challenge to do each week. It has been great for the girls to keep active whilst simultaneously feeling connected to their classmates who are doing the same. Also, there are regular art competitions that every girl is encouraged to partake of, as well as art videos showing them how to make crafts by following the steps shown. A further initiative is to allow girls to choose 6 books from the school library and have them delivered (in a contactless way) to their doors. Teachers have been phoning pupils to keep up the connection, as well as giving

extra support in reading and kria. BBY also ran a Sefirah Middos project, where each week of the sefirah girls received a small booklet about a certain middah, some stories and a project for them to do. BBY has gone far beyond what one may consider a school’s regular call of duty. Siyumim continue as usual, with teachers delivering treats to each girl with a note, and having a Zoom Siyum with each pupil preparing something to say or show. The headteacher, Rabbi Lieberman, is in regular contact with parents and even delivers the Kesser Shem Tov Certificates to girls each Erev Shabbos! Regular weekly assemblies have been held, with Rabbi Lieberman telling stories and fascinating divrei torah, keeping girls engaged even over the phone. With the necessary provisions in place, BBY has now opened its doors, welcoming back four year groups for a full day, confident that they are providing a safe and warm environment. Two further year groups are due to return next week. Care has been shown to each girl and their family as the school continues to shine despite the lockdown restrictions.

Jewish Care

Helen and Natasha Zack Go Purple for their 300 mile challenge for Jewish Care’s Vi & John Rubens House 2

Twenty-three year old Natasha Zack and her mum Helen, have set themselves a goal of walking 300 miles between them to raise money for Jewish Care in June. They are also taking on 30 second challenges to do on their walks and are filming them along the way. So far their 30 second challenges have included hoopla, dance moves, standing on one leg, sit ups, press ups and of course wearing purple for Jewish Care’s Go Purple week. The mother and daughter duo from Chigwell had decided to take on the challenge in April but had to postpone this because of lockdown. They are walking in memory of Leslie Sherman and Harold Zack, Helen’s dad and father-in-law and Natasha’s Zeida and Grandad who were both cared for at Jewish Care’s Vi & John Rubens House in Ilford. Helen works as a receptionist and administrator at the care home and Natasha is a communications intern. Helen says, “I will be walking 100 miles and Tash will be walking 200 to reach our combined 300 miles together. “Leslie, my Dad, was one of life’s great helpers. He was the Treasurer of the Fundraising Committee for Vi & John Rubens House for a number of years. To be able to raise money like this was always very important to him. When he needed more support following his diagnosis with Parkinson’s and Parkinson’s Dementia, he began going to Jewish Care’s Dennis Centre for people living with dementia which is next door to the care home. As his condition progressed and couldn’t go to the Dennis Centre it wasn’t even a question of where he would go next when more care was needed. “Jewish Care’s Vi & John Rubens House care home has been part of our family for a very long time. In the 80’s both my Nanas,

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Annie Sherman and Dora West were residents at Vi & John and my great aunty Ruchel was a resident there too after that. Another great-aunt and great-uncle of mine, Pearly and Lionel Winston, also lived at Jewish Care’s Hyman Fine House in Brighton.” Helen says, “The challenge for me is the walking itself as I have fibromyalgia. It causes simple things such as walking to be painful. Since starting this I have surprised myself with the distance I have walked. It’s been good to have socially distanced visits while walking with my daughter to our friends during lockdown and we welcome more fun challenges en route too. Natasha adds, “My Grandad was always full of joy right to the end. The last time I saw and spoke to him was saying goodbye and that I’ll see him soon, the day before I left for my travels in Australia. He passed away the day after I landed. Jewish Care were amazing in the care home and I have so much to thank them for. It would mean so much to us if people would donate to our fundraiser. “I felt that this was a great way to show our appreciation for the work Jewish Care do, whilst raising money for this worthwhile cause. I also hope that this will help to encourage others to be more active too and not take health for granted. Though both my grandfathers were active in their lives, Zeida had Parkinson’s and dementia and my Grandad had a stroke which severely affected his mobility afterwards. Whilst you never know what will happen in the future, we do have control over what we do today. “We have been really grateful for all the support that Jewish Care gave to my grandfathers and our extended family. They have done wonderful things for my family and continues to do so for others.”

WE C U 2020 launches for NHS workers across Greater Manchester WE C U 2020 launches in Manchester, collecting donations from big brands and distributing self-care packages for NHS workers to show thanks and support for their tireless efforts. Manchester – WE C U 2020 is an amazing campaign started by ex-beauty editor Lauren Ezekiel from her home in Essex. It began when Lauren discovered the heavy toll of PPE and repeated washing and scrubbing was having on the skin of NHS staff, causing painful blotches, sores and peeling skin. Wanting to give back to those who are working so tirelessly to keep us all safe and healthy during the Covid-19 outbreak, Lauren resourcefully utilised her contacts in the beauty industry to request donations for beauty and self-care products from big brands, packs the products into goody bags and distributes them to NHS workers. The campaign has been a tremendous success in London, with a range of prolific brands, including Dermalogica, Burt’s Bees, Molten Brown and Nip +Fab, supporting the cause and donating a wide range of products from face masks to luxury facial oils, rescue remedy to nipple cream and much more. Lauren outlined her motivation for starting this incredible campaign for NHS workers, saying: “They are exhausted, missing family and under tremendous strain. However, for me there is another aspect. It might seem frivolous, but as an ex-beauty editor, I know how a beauty product can actually lift your mental state. As you inhale a face cream it can give you a moment of mindfulness. A moment away from the madness. And I wanted to show every nurse, doctor, cleaner,

administrator on the frontline that we are thinking of them. NHS workers are the people that look after us; we need to show them we care about and value them.” So far, the campaign has been incredibly successful, delivering nearly 20,000 goody bags to over 200 hospitals, care homes and community teams around the country. They have had over 300,000 items donated in total and have donated 60,000 products as direct requests. Almost 150 brands have donated products, including 24,000 Palmers Cocoa Butter Body Lotions, 10,000 Mitchum deodorants, 28,000 Burt’s Bees lip balms, 5000 Elizabeth Arden Hand Creams, 6000 Cetraban Body Lotions, 6000 John Frieda Shampoos, and 40,000 products

from Unilever. WE C U 2020 was launched in Manchester a few weeks ago, by Lauren’s uncle Derek Ezekiel who will be overseeing all efforts across the Greater Manchester area. Regarding the launch, Derek said: “My niece Lauren’s fantastic idea, WE C U 2020, has really taken off in London and we are really pleased to be launching it in Manchester. The response from the NHS staff and carers has been overwhelming and I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to those who have been working so hard to keep us all safe The initiative will also be a great way to engage the Greater Manchester community, who might still be at home, through our volunteer network. On Shabbos Parshas Korach, June 27th, hundreds of Oraysa participants from around the world will proclaim, Hadran Alach Masechta Brachos Vehadrach Alan! We will return to you Masechta Brachos and you shall return to us! This familiar, intimate farewell greeting to a masechta upon completion will have special significance for these lomdim, who, over the past six months, developed a personal bond with Masechta Brachos, learning and absorbing it amud after amud, many of them with daily and weekly chazaras and optional monthly bechinos. They are now coming away with a lifelong affinity and attachment to the opening tractate of Torah Sheb’al Peh! Indeed, there is another translation to the words Hadran Alach Vehadrach Alan that is equally apropos – Masechta Brachos, your splendor remains with us and our splendor shall remain with you, forever! The Oraysa program, an initiative for a daily Amud V’echazara, launched immediately after the 13th Siyum Hashas, this past winter. Klal Yisroel came away from that momentous celebration of accomplishment with a clear message. Not only does one need to have a daily learning seder but one also needs to have a strategic goal that motivates him day in day out. Oraysa has become a household name, warmly embraced by lomdim from the full spectrum of the Olam Hatorah, including

Shlomo Ezagui zt”l

BY ESTHER ULLMANN At a tribute event this week the overriding theme expressed in the eulogies was that he was a man who appreciated the purpose of life. Neighbour for many decades, Rabbi Benzion Groskopf, expressed his sense of loss over a pleasant neighbour from whom never a word was heard out of place. Rabbi Shmuel Goldberg of Prestwich Shteibel spoke of the development of his friendship with Rabbi Ezagui, which began when they first met at the time when the Ezagui family were the proprietors of Kolbo, where all became aware of his friendly nature. Fellow shul-member Rabbi Elkouby pointed out the tremendous respect for the shul that Rabbi Ezagui had, saying that he would always be of the first ten to arrive at shul and insisted on leaving his phone at home before attending shul. When returning once from an operation, he quietly sat at the back of the shul, so as not to draw attention to himself and undermine

the due respect for shul. Rabbi Reuven Ezagui spoke of his father’s desire to be buried in Israel and how, due to circumstances surrounding Covid-19, this was not an easy feat to accomplish. Reuven explained why it may have been Divinely-assisted, based on King David’s words in Tehillim – “Who shall ascend the mountain of G-d? One who is clean of theft”, meaning, honest in business “and pure of heart” – meaning that they have Yirat Shamayim. These were two particularly strong points of Rabbi Shlomo. If he owed someone money he would pay them immediately and his Yirat Shamyim meant that he would give due respect to Torah scholars. His communal work involved working for the Chevrah Kadsiha. The speakers also noted his exemplary Kibbud Av Va’eim he accorded his parents when they ran the Kolbo shop together, and of his pursuit of Achdus. He leaves behind parents, siblings, a wife and six children.

balebattim, mechanchim, and yungeleit in Kollel. Now, six months later, they celebrate the vision behind the program which has been born out in their long-term retention of the masechta. The program provides a plethora of resources, including daily audio and video shiurim, marei mekomos and review sheets, and the popular, interactive Rischa D’Oraysa Q&A’s, sent daily to participants via email. All resources can be accessed anytime from anywhere, via the website, www.oraysa.org. In addition, a monthly optional bechina is given every fourth Sunday on the ten blatt learned over the course of the month. The bechina is a critical tool for testing and promoting retention, motivating participants to do an additional, pre-bechina review at the end of each month. Oraysa also provides support for setting up local shiurim, chaburos, chavrusos, and more. The handy, easy-to-use calendar produced by Oraysa provides a clear outline of the program and one’s ongoing progress throughout. A custom calendar can be created and maintained by creating a login account on the website. Oraysa has the strong endorsement and enthusiastic encouragement of leading Roshei Yeshiva, Rabbonim and Gedolei Yisroel, who issued strong statements of support for this learning model. The project is under the auspices of Harav Noach Isaac Oelbaum shlit”a, Rav of Khal Nachlas Yitzchok in Queens.

Stories of Friendship from Kisharon This week is National Learning Disability Awareness week. This year’s awareness week is focusing on the importance of friendship. People with a learning disability already experience high levels of loneliness and social isolation and lock-down for some has heightened this. The awareness week gives us the opportunity to show the importance of friendships to help with tackling isolation, as well as exploring the different ways of maintaining friendships during this unusual time. Kisharon share stories of friendship including two that have developed since lock-down.

ELEANOR AND SABRINA

Eleanor and Sabrina have formed a friendship since lock-down. Petrona, Sabrina’s support staff member says “I can see how much these calls brighten her day up, she is always smiling when on the phone to Eleanor”. Sabrina says, “I enjoy speaking with Eleanor every week, she calls me on the phone and we also talk with video. We talk about Eleanor’s dog Alfie, Smokey my cat, the weather, daily activities, family and my career. It makes me very happy to have Eleanor as friend.” Eleanor started volunteering with Kisharon in June 2018 doing the lunchtime rota at the school. Eleanor first started talking to

Sabrina a few weeks after lock-down started. Eleanor says, “I love volunteering with Kisharon! It is such a warm, welcoming and supportive community and I’m very grateful to be a part of it. Over the past few weeks I have built up such a lovely relationship with Sabrina. She really has come out of her shell and I feel I’m now really getting to know her and her great sense of humour! We have lovely chats about the food we love, her favourite books, my dog, Alfie and her cat Smokey. It’s been a pleasure getting to know Sabrina-she lifts my spirits and I hope to meet her in person soon. It’s made me realise that by giving very little I get a huge amount back.”

Natalia and was happy to help do some shopping for her. I call and say hello as well as text to see if she needs anything a few times each week. It feels strange not being able to see her in person but I am happy we have made a friendship on the phone. I really recommend others volunteering as I enjoy the experience and it makes me feel happy to help someone! On Fridays I also help shop and deliver Shabbat essentials to Kisharon House.”

MEIR AND ELI

NATALIA AND ELI

Natalia has been home alone and self-isolating since February 12th 2020 due to ill health and then lock-down struck. She has only left her front door a handful of times to put her bin out. Teenager Eli, 13 was looking for volunteering opportunities and Kisharon put him in touch with Natalia. “Eli has been so kind, he messages me 2-3 times a week to see if I am safe and to ask if I need anything. He brings me milk, cheese and bread every week. I really appreciate him asking to ensure I am ok as I don’t want to call for help. I was so surprised such a

Meir (left) and Eli (right)

young boy wanted to help and offered me support. I am so grateful that we are able to communicate and I count him now as a member of my family. Eli is very kind and thoughtful and I wish I could give him a big hug!” My Uncle goes to Kisharon and I got in touch via the Kisharon website to ask if I could offer any help. I was put in touch with

Meir and Eli have been friends since attending Kisharon Day School together. Their friendship flourished over the years and they then both moved into Supported Living together in 2013. They love going on holidays, spending Shabbats at Eli’s house, going to concerts and cooking together. Eli said my favourite part about being friends with Meir is that he is, “always making jokes and is always happy”. They are always helping each other out with daily tasks, looking out for each other and reminding one another of dates for festivals, concerts and what to eat and what not to eat. Meir and Eli are grateful to have each other and their friendship has strengthened during lock-down.

TV’s Hugh Dennis leads interfaith Zoom mask-making event Mock The Week star Hugh Dennis led a special Zoom event for the charity Mitzvah Day, showing people across the country how to make their own homemade masks from just an old T-Shirt and a pair of scissors. All masks were then given to friends, neighbours or family members in a small act of kindness. More than 250 people of all faiths and backgrounds joined the comedian on Zoom on Tuesday evening (June 16). Within 12 hours, another 1,000 had watched the live or recorded video on Facebook. Participants included The Reverend Margaret Cave, Rabbi Daniel Epstein, Rabbi Jeff Berger, writer and broadcaster Dr Ellie Cannon, City Sikhs founder Jasvir Singh, Muslim activist Mash Joy, Gabi Mendelsohn of Young JAMI and Ahmereen Reza, a trustee of the Jewish/Muslim Women’s Network Nisa-Nashim. The event was part of the Every Mitzvah Matters interfaith social action scheme. The initiative is intended to highlight and encourage how even the smallest every day acts of kindness that people do for each other can be transformative for both the receiver and the giver, especially during this coronavirus crisis. Mitzvah Day chair Laura Marks OBE said:

“Making and wearing masks is essential for our physical safety but a real challenge when we are trying to meet people and build friendships in these times of uncertainty. By making masks with joy, as a community and with recycled materials we hope to show that together we can and will emerge stronger, more united and even, smiling.” Hugh and Laura led the interfaith group in making the masks from a simple method involving no sewing, while also getting to know to participants and discussing who they are donating their finished face coverings to. Hugh, whose TV credits also include Outnumbered and The Mary Whitehouse Experience, said: “Lockdown has done many things but one of them is that this is the largest audience I have worked with for quite a while, although if Mask Making with Hugh Dennis makes it to television then TV is in a very bad state! “Small acts of kindness are terribly important not only now, but always, and it is wonderful to see first-hand the vital work Mitzvah Day does bringing people of all faiths and none together to help others in this way.” Hugh, whose father was an Anglican Bishop, will be making a socially distanced delivery of the masks to his children, who are

21 and 23 and locked down elsewhere. Dr Ellie Cannon – best known for her Sky TV appearances and column in the Mail on Sunday – was joined by her 16-year-old daughter Lottie to make their masks. Ellie said: “There is nothing greater we could do as an act of kindnesss, or a mitzvah, than wear a mask. My mask protects you and your’s protects me. This is social action at its best, and such a treat to be ‘with’ the wonderful Hugh Dennis!” The Reverend Margaret Cave is team rector of the East Greenwich Team Ministry and vicar of Christ Church. She said: “This was a brilliant way to make a face covering out of an old T-shirt that I can now give away to someone else, who can then in turn pass on the love and do their bit to keep everyone safe.” Rabbi Daniel Epstein, of Cockfosters and N Southgate Synagogue, and Mitzvah Day interfaith advisor Rabbi Jeff Berger both enjoyed the chance to work alongside leaders of other faiths in such a vital activity. Rabbi Epstein said: “Making masks with Mitzvah Day was great fun and joining with faith leaders and over 150 other people was a great feeling of community, even while we are apart.” Rabbi Berger added: “As we return to

Hugh Dennis attempting to make a face mask

public life, safe practices - like wearing face masks - are essential. Mask making with Hugh Dennis was a fabulous and easy-tofollow Mitzvah Day way of showing we care for each other.” The mask making event was run in partnership with AJWO (The Alliance of Jewish Women and their Organisations), Barnet Multi Faith Forum, Commonwealth Jewish Council, JVN- Jewish Volunteering Network, Near Neighbours, Nisa-Nashim, YoungJami and YourNeighbours.Org. Further Every Mitzvah Matters events are planned and will include a range of online sessions including family friendly activities. Anyone wishing to take part should contact info@mitzvahday.org.uk.

AJEX marks National Armed Forces Week with virtual service AJEX has announced that it will be holding a virtual service of commemoration on Sunday 28th June at 11.00am to honour British Jewish servicemen and women. This ceremony takes place during National Armed Forces week and in the days leading up to this ceremony there will be a variety of online interviews. This year is filled with notable anniversaries - 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of VE day and VJ Day and the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. In usual circumstances, AJEX support National Armed Forces Week with an annual commemoration service at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. However due to Covid-19, this is not possible for 2020, yet AJEX is even more determined than ever to gather together online from home and reflect on the contribution of those who served. Launching on Sunday 21st June, AJEX

will be running a series of fascinating online interviews featuring both veterans and serving personnel. All can be viewed on the AJEX Facebook and YouTube pages. These interviews lead up to the main commemoration ceremony which goes live on Sunday 28th June at 11.00 am. The ceremony will include a keynote address from Sir Malcolm Rifkind, AJEX Patron and former Secretary of State for Defence. Sir Malcom will speak on the vital contribution of Jewish servicemen and women to British society. Sir Malcolm Rifkind commented, “AJEX has done marvellous work for Jewish veterans over the years and its task is never complete. The needs of the many veterans change over the years but the tireless work that AJEX delivers continues to assist them in any way it can, including through activities of Remembrance and

Keeping congregants connected BY ESTHER ULLMANN As synagogues across the UK look to opening their doors in the near future, communal leaders have been reflecting on the successes of keeping their communities together during the corona era. Rabbi Benjy Rickman, assistant Rabbi at Holy Law Synagogue told of the weekly Kabbalat Shabbat which was held in advance of Shabbat each week, drawing participants from other communities today, including a joint venture with Stenecourt. At 12pm during weekdays there has been story time and Brocho parties. Together with Rav Yossi Chazan, a remote shiur was held for the benefit of the elderly in Heathands Care Home. This was in addition to weekly quizes and discussions. Another unique manner in which the shul members were kept in touch was through weekly lectures - presented by the shul members themselves. Rabbi Rickman plans on finding ways to engage those who

commemoration.” The online ceremony will also feature, amongst others Rabbi Reuben Livingstone, Mike Bluestone (AJEX JMA National Chairman), Marie Van der Zyl (Board of Deputies) and young students. Mike Bluestone said: “When we heard the National Memorial Arboretum was closed, we knew we had to create a different kind of event. We look forward to seeing the community coming together

cannot attend Kabbalat Shabbat in shul, once it reopens. Mr Martin Kloos, Chair of Trustees of Meade Hill Synagogue, reported that the Rabbi and executive had been working together from the outset, adapting rapidly to the needs of the congregants. Shul Rav, Rabbi Yanky Prijs introduced a “buddy system”, which meant that each shielding member of the shul was paired with a volunteer who would ensure to phone them regularly. Rebbetzin Esti Prijs organised in time for Lag Ba’omer, in place of the annual shul barbeque, over 30 people be sent a barbecue pack to enjoy at home with their family. This was supported by the Office of the Chief Rabbi. At Shavuot, each member was invited to collect a delicious milky dessert - free of charge. Rabbi Prijs also issues a weekly Dvar Torah which is shared on the shul group. On a recent lecture Rabbi Prijs spoke of the eternity of acts of kindness, a poignant message for the times in which we live.

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON This week we hear hospitality firms are holding the Government to ransom, quite fairly in my estimation, saying that if it doesn't reduce this two-metre rule within 7 days, they will undoubtedly have to make staff redundant. Nothing shocking there; no industry can survive, or pay staff without revenue from its customers; the Government can't continue to keep a nation on furlough indefinitely. I know someone personally who has been unable to contemplate re-opening their business, as they rely solely on footfall traffic from tourist attractions in the heart of London. They have an extremely limited shop space and there is zero likelihood of having more than a couple of customers each day, should the two-metre distance be maintained. Now, he's just one of many thousands of tenants are being pressured to start paying rent. Why should your business have to go to the wall though, when you've spent your life building it up? Tens of thousands of non-essential shops are however re-opening this week to goodness knows what kind of restrictions, and customer reception. Should you bravely decide to explore the shopping malls now screaming out for customers, do keep in mind when reaching the tills, with their 2m distance signs and notices, that experts are telling us 'face-masks are better protection than extended social distancing.' Doubtless they may have to reassess the distancing guidelines pronto, and a consequent potential U-turn on face-masks policy is something which the Government may not cherish as a fond memory. It's great to know however you can now go shopping, take your children to a theme park or the zoo, gather (should you be emboldened) on a rave or a protest match, but you absolutely cannot expect your children to return to a full-time, normal school experience. It is a minor consolation to hear Amanda Spielman (Chief Inspector of Ofsted) say that 'social distancing amongst people in class bubbles is an aspiration, not an absolute requirement.' She adds that the DfE guidance for primary schools stipulates classes should 'normally be split in half, with no more than 15 per group.' As usual it is the unions who are holding education to ransom, citing non-negotiable guidelines, including the unyielding 2 metres. This requirement exceeds the Government's own guidance which admits that early years and primary children' can't be expected to remain 2 metres apart from each other or staff.' Teaching unions seem always to be on the lookout for something to complain about. In my childhood there was often ‘trouble wi’ unions,’ except it was the miner’s unions. Today the coal face is the classroom, and we need Boris to 'wo-man up,' become a Mrs Thatcher and stand up to them.

Jacqueline Curzon PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY

It's great to know… you can now go shopping, take your children to a theme park or the zoo… Aside from ongoing strife for parents and teachers, mental health issues created by distance restrictions, we see a number of others who have been traumatised by being kept at even greater distance or in isolation. Imagine if you will, elderly relatives with a hand on one side of a window, reaching out to a young child on the other side; think of others shielding the vulnerable; those who were unable to say goodbye to dying relatives, save on the end of a telephone. Then of course, I speed dial to the emotive scenes where we see clusters of brick-wielding vandals, aiming missiles at the police on some misguided notion of social injustice. Then naturally - distancing doesn't matter an iota. For the media and TV companies to give extended coverage to these hooligans is despicable because they forget that ninety-nine percent of the population would neither take part in such behaviour, nor condone it, and it doesn't reflect the moral compass of our society. It is wanton negative publicity. On the bright side, tear gas would certainly give the hooligans something to cry about, even if we do live in a civilised society where weapons are not carried by police, and tanks are not likely to be rolled across Westminster Bridge. Boris says desecration of war memorials will incur a 10-year sentence. I suppose it is essentially the violation of the memories of hundreds or thousands of decent people, so perhaps 10 years is then a fitting punishment, even if it’s more than many criminals get for committing murder. Following the recent murder caught on camera of George Floyd and the worldwide BLM protests, we as a religious community which has known discrimination, persecution and genocide for generations - know all about bigotry and

intolerance. Consequently, I've only got a few more words to say about this: ALL LIVES MATTER. On that inclusive note, a special mention to Patrick Hutchinson, a black man from Wimbledon, who rescued a fallen white man from being trampled during the protests in Waterloo station over last weekend. There is an honourable man who cares not a dickybird about race, colour or religion. He is simply a mensch, and that's worthy of a commendation. I recall the murder of several undercover police officers in 1988, who had the misfortune to be caught in the middle of an IRA funeral. Perhaps if there had been more decent human beings like Patrick present in that crowd, instead of a bloodthirsty sectarian mob, those officers would have been saved. Civil unrest is a stain in our history. Amongst the inglorious highlights of 2020 is going to be Wuhan, coronavirus, the murder of George Floyd and civil unrest, ruination of businesses, the heroism and sacrifice of NHS workers, SAGE and its over-inflated forecasts, abandonment of cancer patients and the unionised, self congratulatory, slow-motion de-construction of education. I'm going to propose perhaps for 2021 we can review all the historical figures who were misogynistic, and we can then have all their statues tumbled. Imagine. if you delve deep into history, you'll find it wasn't just Henry VIII who had a veritable collection of wives, and a serious misdemeanour sheet. Women have been persecuted for millennia. The list of likely misogynists would doubtless include Kings, prime ministers, presidents, scientists’, poets, painters and politicians. Casting retrospective shame for perceived generational faults might reflect in some way on every feted person who ever lived, so at what point do we stop rewriting history to suit current political agendas? Pride and prejudice have always existed, and we can't judge yesterday's generation by today's standards because the world was intrinsically a different place. Change has not always proved to be for the better; some changes leave us perplexed at the world we now inhabit. I know some modern ‘fixes’ leave me feeling like a relic from the middle ages. We must also be fearful that normal terminology will ultimately be banned [male, female, marriage, family], words which are at the heart of monotheistic religions. Our world is becoming increasingly unrecognisable whilst we pander ceremoniously to violent and vocal minority groups who – all too often - have a blatant disregard for any convention. Now, an update on my own treatment. Since restarting my toxic chemotherapy in the past few weeks, I have had the huge trauma of repeat Abraxane induced alopecia. It was horrific the first-time round, especially as you are supposed to be cautioned that alopecia will inevitably result. I wasn't, and so it came - in a flash - as a nightmare surprise.

There is nothing which affects a woman so visibly than to be neutered by the absence of her femininity. I'm sure men don't enjoy hair loss either, but as we know, in men it's often viewed more positively. In women it is de-humanising and - unless you cover all mirrors in your home - you will meet your ghoulish spectre at some point, even if it's when you bid goodnight to your toothbrush. No number of pretty scarves, wigs or hats will likely change your mind. You'll find you occasionally pick up a hairbrush, or reach for the shampoo, or your hat as you leave the house. I also occasionally tried to apply mascara, when doing a cursory makeup, forgetting I had no eyelashes, only to be reminded when I achieved a panda look for my trouble. In a points rating, alopecia gets a zero. And last time I was plunged into mental agony thinking I would not live long enough to be ‘taken down the road,’ looking anything other than a horror show attraction. Mind you, when I’m waving goodbye, I won’t exactly be in a position to complain. Fortunately, I have survived long enough to see my grass grow sufficiently to pass for an aging 85-year-old, with a light dusting of salt and pepper. To have to restart the hair clock all over again will be inexcusable, and I put the blame for this squarely on the shoulders of my oncologist, who - for the record - has a lovely head of hair, so you might presume would then have the psychological and emotional best interests of her patients at heart, especially if they are also female. I perceive I am but a little ragdoll on her generation game conveyor belt, not a feted prize like the cuddly toy, or the teasmade. And so, I have to struggle on. Hair today, gone tomorrow:- Not my finest week! But I seek out some humour even in this dark moment. Read on… Going back to masks for a minute - maybe we SHOULD adopt mandatory masks for shopping and get back (almost) to business as usual. I've come up with a brilliant wheeze for when I am ready to go back to my favourite venue. Two years ago, I asked a friend who was travelling to Saudi Arabia to bring me back a ‘his-hers’ robe set:- white for the husband complete with ghutrah and iqal, and designer black for myself, the ultimate in modesty. It was perfect for Purim. The only thing I didn't have was the niqab. Since the recent turn of corona-events, I've been able to purchase a black face-mask. So…. if you see someone in full black regalia in Brent Cross, replete with a black face mask, it might just be me. No need to worry about my 'no hair-do,' either. Now, you couldn't get more 'covid protected' than that! Finally, readers of this column will know that I am an absolute softy for babies, so it came as a very nice little bit of news that a Waitrose customer managed to incubate three eggs into little ducklings. Charli Lello called them Beep, Meep and Peep, and said they were 'the cutest little balls of fluff.' Now I suppose my only question is, 'what are you going to do with them, Charli?' Until Shabbat lunch then… Jacqueline x

I like to drain off the vegetables to leave a clear broth and use it for Udon noodle chicken and Tofu ramen as stock to add to grains like rice, quinoa, bulghur wheat, cous cous or use it for a sauce. It can be add to casseroles or stews, saffron fondant potatoes or Sephardi rice cake. I tend to make a large ‘bucket’ each week as it is so versatile. There are other liquids that equally have a useful second ‘life’ such as water from boiled vegetables. Whilst boiling is not the healthiest way to cook you can retain some of the minerals, vitamins, and nutrients by recycling it. Use the ‘nourishing water’ for soups, sauces, and gravies as soon as possible and store in the fridge labelled and dated. Pasta water is also useful. The starch water left over after draining pasta is good to pour a little over the pasta and the sauce to bind together. It can be saved to add a silky texture to gravies, soups or to add thickening to a stock. Juice from tinned or cooked chickpeas and beans is called aquafaba (from the latin aqua water and faba meaning bean.) It can be used as a substitute for egg whites for most recipes like meringues,

cakes, icing, mayonnaise; a vegan’s delight! The proteins and starches from the liquid act similarly to the proteins in egg whites. Pickle juice, the left-over brine, can be reused to add flavour and acidity to many dishes. Add a little to salads, use as a marinade, pickle other vegetables, or use some as part of a vinaigrette dressing. Corn water that has been used to boil corn on the cob makes a good base for a vegetable stock. Add other vegetables, spices, and some salt for a tasty veggie stock. The liquid from tinned corn can also be added to soups and other recipes too. Potato water equally has some nutritional tasty starchy goodness that can be used again. Add a little with butter and milk to mashed potato, add to bread, biscuit, or pizza dough. And anything left over once cooled makes excellent fertilizer for your plants! Hopefully some of these ideas will help you recycle your ‘tasty liquids’. Above is my recipe for Udon Noodle Ramen.

A satirical look at Judaism in lockdown by Max Witriol

Hilchot Covid (The laws of Covid) Perek 19 (Chapter 19)

Whilst we hope lockdown will end sooner rather than later, in the meantime we bring you this important private service announcement. For any final rulings please check with your own local orthodox Rabbi. 1) When a person returns home he is obligated to wash his hands with hot water and soap, but on Shabbos, cold water and hand wash must be used instead(unless he has hot water from an urn) 2) It is an established custom to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ whilst hand washing. Whilst some authorities forbid this on grounds of ‘Chukat Hagoyim’ (‘going in the ways of Gentiles’) others say it is not

problematic, and even meritorious, as since one shouldn’t be thinking Divrei (words of ) Torah or words of Kedushah(holiness) in the bathroom, singing ‘Happy Birthday’ is a good way to divert his mind there from. Nonetheless, one who is distressed by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ may sing ‘Anarchy in the UK’ instead. 3) Anti-social distancing. One must remain at least 4 amot, or 2m, from any

other human being at all times - this is a clear Torah level prohibition. Those unable to do this - children, selfish morons, idiots etc should not be allowed out without a collar and lead. 4) Shaking hands. Shaking hands has long been forbidden under Covid guidelines, but there is a problem with this prohibition. Some say that shaking hands is a non-Jewish custom anyway, so under normal(that is pre-Covid)

conditions they never shook hands. But now that the Gentiles are not shaking hands maybe the act of not shaking hands has achieved the status of chukat hagoi Therefore it has been suggested that, to satisfy all opinions, one should do an ‘air shake’ and then either way he will be different. However if the situation develops where a large number of non-Jews are also doing air- shakes, one should might need to consult a local authority as to how to proceed(preferably not Barnet council) 5) It is not mandatory to wear a mask, but anyone who does is praised by the rabbis. A black mask is preferred, but any colour is acceptable except orange as this is considered damaging one’s fellow’s eyes. Pink is frowned upon as is Beige. Patterned masks are strictly forbidden as they cause a person to go mad.

Davening at home on Shabbat THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

In many shuls the wardens’ announcements are now being made on YouTube and Facebook, before Shabbos obviously, thus not in their correct time( ie the conclusion of the Shabbat morning service) Therefore, one who wishes to make these announcements himself at the traditional time, immediately prior to Adon Olam, is encouraged to to do so - but only under the following strict conditions:1) Audible Distancing he must do it in a loud enough voice to be heard at least 10 m away (it is meritorious for his wife - or daughters above the age of Batmitzvah - to shout out “can you speak up please, we can’t hear you over here” if they are present at the time(and even if they can in fact hear him). There is NO requirement for a mechitza for this according to ANY of the main authorities. 2) At least one other person must be present in the room where he is making the announcements lest it be considered “announcements in vain” (according to the view of many authorities) 3) Anything promised in the announcements must be followed through

on e.g. if he says: “Today’s kilddush is being sponsored by …”( naming himself ), he is thereby obligated to provide one - preferably with schmaltz herring and at least two malt whiskeys, but failing that a bare minimum of crisps and dips, apart from the mandatory Palwin no.10(some “modern orthodox” use Kedem, but this is frowned upon) 4) The announcements must adhere closely to the wardens’ YouTube videos and not be based on his own fanciful ideas. Nonetheless, if he wants to add something of his own e.g. a family member’s birthday, he can do so in moderation ie as long is he doesn’t go for on for too long. 5) The announcements must be a minimum of four minutes and a maximum of 7 1/2 minutes -anymore is considered “Teercha detzibur” (an inconvenience to the community). Less than the minimum on the other hand is deemed outright laziness and an insult to the community (regardless of how many people in his home community) 6) Ideally the announcements should be made by a male over the age of 50 actively engaged in some sort of

accountancy (preferably chartered) If for some reason, neither he, nor any other members of his family fit this criteria, a lawyer, doctor or financial advisor may announce instead. But if none of the above can be found in his household then he should engage in some serious soul-searching. Women are not permitted to make any announcements except in time of great need. A minor must on no account be allowed to do the main announcements(see below however) 7) If another family member wants to add his or her individual announcements this is perfectly acceptable - as long as it doesn’t take the total time beyond 7 1/2 minutes, as stated above (paragraph 5) However a maximum of two guest announcements is permitted - anymore is considered silly. 8) a)The prayer for the Royal Family can be said by any member of a man’s household, as long as that person can read Olde English from the Singer’s prayerbook. b) It is imperative to check you are reading from a current Singer’s edition and not one mentioning King GeorgeIV for instance. c) If he is davening alone, he may still say the words

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

“and let us say Amen” as “us” in certain vernaculars e.g. Geordie refers to 1st person singular. 9) The prayer for the State of Israel may be said in a thick Ashkenazy accent, although many are of the opinion that in such an instance English(not Yiddish) is preferable. Each person should go according to the custom of his forebears.

WEEKDAY DAVENNING

1) Since a person is currently saving time by not driving to shul and back, and not having to repeat the Amidah, hear Kaddish etc he is strongly urged to actually say at least some of the prayers he normally skips. 2) Regarding one who feels the psychological need to get into his car and drive somewhere before davening, he may do so as long as he is careful not to go a longer distance than his regular drive to shul. 3) It is not permitted to have the radio, TV or netflix on whilst Davening, even on a weekday, but if there are Uncle Moishe videos playing in the background there is room to be lenient.

ASK THE RABBI

18 JUNE 2020

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com WHAT WOULD THE REBBE SAY? Dear Rabbi It is the yartzeit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe next week. As a Lubavitch Rabbi I wonder if you could share what you think would be his response to the current global crisis. What with all the restrictions in Jewish life at the moment – no shul – no school – I just wonder what the mission would be? I know it is mere speculation but I am assuming something can be gleamed from past teachings. In anticipation, Kalman Dear Kalman As you rightly observe it remains eminently speculative and it is not for me to speak in anyone else’s name, let alone someone as great as the Lubavitcher Rebbe. However, when assuming his mantle of leadership in 1950, the Rebbe, who escaped war torn Europe, confronted the inevitable problem the Jewish world in a post Holocaust-era was facing. Many despaired, believing the world was a dangerous place to live. The Rebbe maintained that the world we desire is inherently good. The ability to see beauty in the world, insisted the Rebbe, is the beginning of our moral sensibility. He also believed in the intrinsic value of every human being who is “formed in the image of his Creator.” Thus, what one might typically perceive as character shortcomings, the Rebbe saw as opportunities to

maximise potential. To that end, in the Rebbe’s worldview, every obstacle opens doors; every challenge enables us to expose latent potential. Every darkness is a prelude to a new dawn. If there is one catchphrase that is being bantered about at present – it is “new normal.” We are emerging from our collective lockdown and entering into a “new normal.” What does that really mean and how does that translate into our lives as Jews? These past few months have engendered a paradigm shift in civilisation. We have all suddenly become acutely aware of our vulnerability; we have all come to recognise that no matter how powerful, how influential, how rich, how incredible you think you are – it is not about you. Rather, there is Someone in charge in this world. All of a sudden we are thrust into this whole new set of circumstances where we find ourselves operating on a different level in awareness of the fact that we are not in control. The Rebbe always stressed that any and every advancement in our world can be and is intended to be utilised for spiritual purpose. Hence for so many years many of his public addresses were broadcast on Television. For so many years the internet became a new vehicle through which to reach out to tens of thousands of Jews. And it is fair to say, that on account of the advancement of technology, more Jews have been touched,

Tehillim Psalm 146 This week we begin the final countdown! Just five psalms left until the end of the whole book of Tehillim! What an amazing achievement that we have nearly accomplished together... The first of the five Hallelukas spans the middle bit of Pesukei d’Zimrah that we recite in Shacharit each day. Hashem is the Creator of the whole world, who cares for the most underprivileged in society, even when it appears that one’s enemies have the upper hand. The psalm starts on an upbeat note. ‘I will praise Hashem while I live, I will make music to my G-d whilst I exist.’ We must utilise every second that we are alive on this green earth to recognise our Creator and sing to Him! The psalm then takes a more sombre note to hammer home the message of what is impor-

engaged, impacted during these past few months than probably ever before. Where previously we engaged physically, the virtual reality has created vast new opportunity. We have been connecting in ways like never before. “Don’t see obstacles as stumbling blocks but as stepping stones.” That is the Rebbe’s enduring message in these sorts of predicaments. There was a man who once came to the Rebbe and expressed his exasperation at his workload. Between being a principal of a day school, a regular columnist and writer for various publications, a sought after speaker etc. he simply asked the Rebbe: “Something has to give. Which should I give up?” The Rebbe pondered a few moments then said to him: “I would like you to undertake directing Chabad activities in your city.” You can well imagine the man’s alarm. Not only did the Rebbe not tell him where he ought to ease up, but just like that handed up a new task! And he expressed his dismay to the Rebbe. The Rebbe replied: Whatever you are doing up until now, is not on account of your own abilities, rather on account of G-d given strengths. G-d Himself is unlimited. If He can give you the potential to do what you are doing now, He can certainly give you the potential to undertake greater and more expanded responsibilities.” We are each put into this world because there is something we can do that no one else can do

which is why we are here in the first instance. And when you understand that it is not “me” but Someone else who is in charge – and you commit yourself to that awareness, then you are able to literally recreate yourself, redefine your personality and discover the latent potential within. We know that darkness is just

tant in this world. In one of the most famous lines in all of Tehillim, King David urges us to remember our goal in life. ‘Tetzei rucho yashuv l’admato, bayom hahu ovdu eshtonotav – When his spirit departs, he returns to the dust, on that day all his plans perish.’ You can be the best businessman in the world but the day you die, you have zero control on what your descendants can do with your hard-earned money. They can lose it all and you will not be able to do a thing. That is why it is essential to ensure that best cash ISA you can ever get for yourself is to make sure your legacy goes beyond your brief sojourn on earth. Strive mightily to learn as much Torah as possible and to do as many mitzvot as you can, whilst being kind to all those around you especially close family. By doing this you can

ensure that your plans do not perish when you die, but that your legacy lives on. The rest of the psalm gives us the ideas of how to achieve lasting worthiness beyond the grave. Copy Hashem by looking after orphans and widows. Protect the disabled and disadvantaged. Living this way will guarantee eternal happiness and fame both in this world and the next. May we all be successful in this endeavour which will also help to bring about the coming of Mashiach, speedily in our days Amen.

a prelude to new light. New Normal – on the one hand, as per what Maimonides describes there will be an era when initially the world will carry on as normal – but it will be with a new light – the radiance of redemption and a new reality – the arrival of Moshiach. That remains our enduring mission and ultimate dream.

Corona Diary #9

18 JUNE 2020

The Challenges of Phase Two BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Many, countries around the world have navigated the first phase of the corona crisis, slowly resuming their “routines” after months in quarantine. This shift affords welcome relief, renewed hope and great expectations for a ‘return to normal’. Israeli society has experienced this “return to normal” for the past few weeks but we have realized that, in fact, our “new normal” is still significantly impacted by corona restrictions. Phase two of this medical crisis- the resumption of a semi-normal routine but the realisation that this virus isn’t magically disappearing- presents a new set of personal and emotional challenges. Parshat Shelach provides several portraits of human failure and these portraits deliver important cautionary messages about our struggle with adversity.

LESSONS FROM THE SPIES

The failure of the spies or meraglim isn’t just a solitary or isolated transgression; this disloyalty spurns G-d’s promises, belittles the Jewish claim to Israel, and irrevocably alters the arch of Jewish history. To be honest, the spies can’t be blamed for what their eyes witnessed: a fearsome population, staggeringly large fruits and cities fortified to the teeth. The true crime of the spies was the manner in which they interpreted and presented this data. Life sometimes presents intimidating circumstances and alarming conditions. Optimists and believers always imagine solutions and work-arounds to challenges. By contrast, sceptics and cynics will always highlight the “negative” and obsess about the futility of their predicament. Rashi cites Calev’s response to the fatalism of the spies: “Even if the land of Israel were lodged in Heaven, giant ladders could grant access.” When a goal is truly important and viewed as “life or death”, human beings marshal resources and generate imaginative solutions. When faced with adversity, do we choose to agonize over the problem or do we commit to creatively devise solutions? The spies chose dread rather than hope. Additionally, the spies greatly exaggerated the crisis level. Exaggeration detaches us from reality and handicaps our ability to provide poised and balanced solutions. Clearly, the locals of this land were tall and even towering, but it is difficult to imagine that they dwarfed the human spies to the size of grasshoppers. Similarly, the claim of the spies about a land which “consumes its inhabitants” sounds like panicked hyperbole. Perhaps the spies witnessed fierce battles or

gruesome deaths, but land rarely devours people and humans can live almost anywhere on the planet. Exaggeration of the facts inflates the crisis, fans the flames of panic and ratchets unnecessary worry. Finally, the spies confided to their audience that they felt as tiny as grasshoppers. Fear shrinks our confidence and our self-esteem and when we shrivel into smaller versions of ourselves we feel trapped and incapable of resilience and resistance. Courage demands self-confidence and optimism – traits generally uncommon in grasshoppers. We mustn’t allow a virus to shrink us or diminish our belief in the power of humanity. Otherwise we will continue to thrash in the weeds with the other grasshoppers.

THE REACTION OF THE GENERAL POPULATION

Of course libel of the spies instigated a mass rebellion amongst the general population who begin to cry and wail, condemning this date of Tisha b’av as a night of perpetual weeping. Complaining or crying tend to demoralize, embitter and disillusion rather than contribute toward a solution. Ultimately, their petty complaints incited delusional nostalgia. Absurdly, they reminisce about their past lives of luxury and repose in Egypt! Someone once wrote that nostalgia is a process of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than its worth. Nostalgia convinces us that our past was qualitatively and radically superior to our present condition. In reality, every stage in life provides unforeseen challenges and offers newly discovered opportunities. As much as we may long for our pre-corona routines, that lifestyle also provided pressures which our current condition may have alleviated. Creating a binary world of black and white contrast between pre-corona and our current world is inaccurate and distracts us from the opportunities of the present world.

THE MA’APILIM

Apologetic but unbroken, a determined band of “believers” defied Moshe’s warning and rushed headlong into disaster. Their hasty ascent to Israel was met with brutal opposition as they were massacred. Obviously, their primary sin was flouting a direct order from G-d not to enter at this point. Psychologically, they were driven by impatience and the desire to quickly rectify the crime of the spies. Recovery from a sin of such magnitude requires time and entails a process. Our impatience convinces us that all of life’s challenges possess immediate solutions;

Israeli society has experienced this “return to normal” for the past few weeks but we have realized that, in fact, our “new normal” is still significantly impacted by corona restrictions the mistakenly assumed the sin of insulting the land of Israel can be instantaneously rectified through fanatical devotion. This rapid turnaround reflects the lack of internalization of the sin and its consequences. We live in a generation which is accustomed to “immediacy”. However, the current medical crisis doesn’t accommodate those unrealistic expectations and will continue to govern our lives for the next few months- at a minimum. It will remind us that many predicaments in life do not offer immediate solutions or rapid repair.

THE MEKOSHESH WHO VIOLATED SHABBAT

The final “portrait of failure” is the mekoshesh who publicly violated Shabbat and was put to death. This storyline is introduced as having occurred in a nondescript desert because this sin was partially prompted by the harsh sentence of wandering aimlessly in the desert. Once the ultimate destination of Israel was delayed for forty years, specific locations in the desert lost all relevance. Having forfeited Israel, the mekoshesh – as well as

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

many others – wondered that perhaps the entire system of G-d’s will and His plans was now suspended. The national tragedy was so severe that perhaps the entire relationship with G-d had been ruptured. Without the land of Israel perhaps the Jews were released from Shabbat observance. Perhaps religion is an all-or-nothing proposition. By apprehending and punishing the word gatherer the enduring nature of Shabbat observance and general fidelity to Divine will was reinforced. This lesson about religion also applies to overall life-especially during a crisis. There may be major areas of our lives and of our routines which have been taken out of our control. We have definitely lost much of our experience. However, this loss can’t ‘bleed’ into the areas of our life which we can control. Loss of control can sometimes be contagious and we often surrender parts of our experience which should still be disciplined and properly managed. Rabbi Moshe Taragin has taught at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, for the past 22 years.

Shelach Lecha RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE

WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE

When the twelve spies came back from finding out what the Promised Land was like, they brought conflicting reports. Ten spies were pessimistic and had only seen the bad things. Two, Joshua and Caleb, were optimistic. It was not that they failed to notice the bad things but they had an extra consideration – “If God helps us we will be all right”. Isn’t that good advice at any stage in history? If we have to make the decisions we may well find the challenges overwhelming, but with God on side it can work… and because He is our stay and support we will dream of the stars and eventually get there. That is what the final words of Adon Olam tell us: “HaShem li v’lo ira”, “The Lord is with me and I will not fear”.

WHAT IS ISRAEL REALLY LIKE?

Moses and the Children of Israel are curious. They are on the way to the land God promised. For years now they have been stuck in a wilderness, trudging along and wondering if they will ever get to a destination. God has kept their spirits up by assuring them that a land of milk and honey is ahead. But why is He saying this? Is it simply

to stop them giving up? That is why the tribes send out an exploratory mission. Now jump across the centuries and think of the era we are living in. Making Aliyah is urged upon us all the time, but will it work? Is Israel really so magnificent that we dare not stay in the Diaspora for another moment? The fact is, if you live in Israel, you are well aware that life there is not perfect. Maybe some things are even worse than people imagine. But instead of looking at politics and economics, look at ethos. In statistical terms Israel is more or less the happiest place on earth, irrespective of the problems and posers. Life in Israel has one overriding dimension – it is always on a high. It’s good to be in Israel!

ARE THERE ANY TREES?

What did Moses tell the twelve spies to do? “Check out the land – and find out if

Making Aliyah is urged upon us all the time, but will it work? Is Israel really so magnificent that we dare not stay in the Diaspora for another moment?

We embark on yet another step on the Path of the Just - Chapter 22 is all about humility. You may wonder why each morning men recite a blessing on the Tallit, “L’heithatef Ba’tzitit” - surely they are about to envelop themselves in a Tallit so, “Lehitatef B’Taliit” would be more precise? Some explain that the Tzitzit represent the lowest part of the Tallit and therefore we are pleased to express our association with the humble. Humility, explains Ramchal, is the opposite of pride. The results of humility are likewise the opposite results of pride. Fake humility is pointless, however. A person must first achieve humility in their thoughts and only then act in a humble manner. So, how does a person become humble? Ramchal says this is by reflecting upon the fact that they simply are undeserving of praise and honour - and certainly not more deserving than others. The reason for this is however much a person has achieved in life, there are still parts of their life that should humble them, be it their nature, their family, their experiences or

We have plenty of mediocrities, some of them even impressive administrators, shrewd negotiators and political manipulators, some of them great masters of oratory and rhetoric, but all too few people of integrity, faith and wisdom, able to inspire great dreams and enable great deeds. The sages say that when there is a tzaddik in the city, “he is its glory, he is its splendour, he is its crown” (Rashi on Gen. 28:10). there are any trees” (Num. 13:20). Trees? How do trees connect with the strength of a land? Rashi recognises the problem and, quoting earlier sources as usual (BB 15a), says that trees are symbolic of human beings. Moses’ question was not really about the vegetation but a deeper issue: in Rashi’s words, “Whether there is amongst the inhabitants an honourable man who will protect them by his merit like a tree protects people by its shade”. What gives a country its quality is not its trees and flowers – not that these are not important assets – but its citizens. If a country has high-minded people, thinkers, visionaries, men and women of faith and conscience who guard the ethos and ethics of the nation, the people are safe. Tragically it must be said that our present generation is sadly lacking in “trees”.

their less-than-perfect deeds. King Solomon taught that no person is infallible - all people sin at some point of their life. This very thought itself should give one a feeling of humility. Ramchal gives three common examples that lead one to arrogance and suggests how to not allow this to happen. They are (1) Wisdom - people who have studied a lot and gained much knowledge (even in Torah) should not exalt themselves but appreciate that any other person given their wisdom and opportunity would have achieved equally or more in acquiring wisdom. If a person has indeed studied a lot of Torah, instead of praising themselves and looking down on others, they should find ways of teaching it to others. (2) Wealth - if a person is blessed with wealth they should ensure to help others in need (3) Power - what use is one’s power if they don’t use it to assist and rescue the oppressed? We are all servants in G-d’s palace and we are given the opportunities to perform certain duties, depending on what wisdom, wealth or strength we are blessed with. No room left for arrogance then.

Rav Moshe Feinstein was asked about the permissibility of using wet paper to clean surfaces with. He wrote that there would be no problem to do so both in terms of the Melacha of “Melaben” (which is to clean materials, which we will leave aside for now) and in terms of “Sechita” which we explained last week is the prohibition of squeezing. There are two reasons why there would be no issue of Sechita: (1) The water is not actually absorbed in the paper; rather, it sits on the surface. (2) The prohibition of Sechita is transgressed when one intends to use the product that is extracted, such as squeezing grapes for their juice. When it comes to paper towels however, one does not need the water that is released from them; to the contrary, one would be equally happy for the liquid to stay on the towel and be used in that manner. Now, besides the fact that other Poskim such as Rav Frank disagreed with Rav Feinstein’s opinion regarding paper towels and, furthermore, Rav Yitzchak Yaakov Weiss said that regarding baby wipes where the entire purpose of the moisture is to ease the process of cleaning the baby and therefore one cannot argue that the moisture being released is not useful, a more fundamental question is: Is Rav Moshe’s ruling comparable to contemporary baby wipes? There

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

are those who say it is; others, however, argue that Rav Feinstein cannot have been discussing paper towels as they clearly do absorb water, but rather wet paper itself. However, there are those who discussed the Halacha of baby wipes personally with Rav Feinstein and showed him various types, all of which he permitted for use on Shabbat. This was apparently based on the assumption that most of the liquid sits on the surface of the wipe and is not absorbed. Rabbi Ribiat interviewed baby wipe companies, some of which confirmed this and others which disagreed. Some explain that if the wipes are water based, then they are absorbed in the wipe, whilst with oil-based wipes, the moisture sits on the surface. So, even if one would apply the leniency of Rav Feinstein, it would only apply to very wet wipes.

Spies are sent to check out the land of Israel! Sadly, though, they were spying with a “little eye” and they didn’t realise that however strong the Cana’anite looked – G-d is stronger! So they came back and told the Jewish people how scared they should be and the people cried and complained. The spies were punished. Yeshoshua and Kalev were the only two who didn’t fall for their fellow spies’ bad attitude and tried to calm the nation down. Hashem was angry with the people, but our ever-faithful shepherd Moshe, begged for forgiveness from Hashem. As a punishment, the Jewish people had to stay in the desert for forty years! All men between the age of 20-60 didn’t survive the journey in the Midbar. If they didn’t appreciate the land of Israel, they were not going to go in. Then the Jewish people are taught the laws of Challa, the Mitzva of separating a portion from dough and giving to the Kohen. The Parsha closes with the Mitzva of Tzitit, proudly worn by men and boys each day.

In a nutshell The Jewish people made their first move away from the Sinai area in last week’s Sidra and they are on the way to the Promised Land! They now realise that they are about to face off the Cana’anite nations and they were gripped with fear. So, they come charging at Moshe at demand – let us send spies in front of us so that we can be forewarned how strong they are and how fortified are their cities. Moshe received some form of approval from Hashem and he told them exactly what to look out for. The twelve spies were one representative from each of the tribes, who were generally good people at the time. Moshe was concerned for his trusted student Yehoshua and prayed to Hashem that he remains righteous. Unfortunately, soon after leaving the camp in the wilderness, they set off with intention to see only the negative and see it they did. They chose to bring extraordinarily large fruit to show how physically great the people who lived there were. After 40 days of travelling up and across the land,

they returned to the nation in the wilderness and they succeeded in traumatising the people to the point of tears and panic – how will we ever succeed in conquering the land? Kalev, the only other righteous spy (together with Yehoshua) tried to calm the people down, saying – don’t you remember our G-d took us out of Egypt with all the miracles? Surely, He can overpower a few kings in Cana’an! This didn’t help and the people cried. Our sages taught that this was the night of the 9th Av- which would later become Tisha Be’av. The spies were punished with death. Moshe prayed to Hashem and succeeded in keeping the nation as a whole intact but, their stay in the wilderness was extended to last 40 years and all men between the age of 20 and 60 were told that they would eventually die in the wilderness. Lots of lessons arise from this story. Not least, the importance of appreciating our holy land and most of all, to accept that Hashem truly is all powerful.

Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.

The Jewish people is then taught the Mitzva of Challah, taking a portion of dough and giving it to a Kohen. We then learn of the laws surrounding a community that mistakenly worship idols and the sin offering they bring up. There was a gentleman who thought it wise to show by example how one who breaks Shabbat is punished. His intentions were good, but sadly, he had to be put to death. The Parsha closes with the Mitzva of Tzitzit. Whether or not you wear Tzitzit, when you see them, you remember the Mitzvot and the importance of not following one’s eyes and heart to stray from G-d. What the eye sees, the heart desires so one must have some control over what their eyes glance at. So, there you have the opening of the Parsha talking of the spies’ downfall due to looking at Eretz Yisrael in a negative light and closing with the importance of not straying after the eyes.

Use this area to write the words you have found.
