Israeli and Bedouin leaders condemn terror attack BY DAVID SAFFER

Israeli and Bedouin leaders have condemned an eight-minute terror attack in Be’er Sheva on Tuesday. Four Israelis were killed and four wounded in the car ramming and knife killing atrocity, one of the deadliest attacks in recent years.

Rabbi Moshe Kravitzky, 50, Laura Yitzhak, 43, and Menachem Menuhin Yehezkel, 67, were Be’er Sheva residents. Doris Hachbas, 49, was from a nearby town. Rabbi Kravitzky and Yechezkel were laid to rest in the city. Yahbas was buried at Moshav Gilat. Yitzhak was expected to be buried yesterday. The assailant, Mohammad Abu al-Kian,

35, was shot by a bus driver at the scene. Al-Kian was a Bedouin-Israeli resident of Hura in the Negev who was known to security agencies and had served a four-year prison sentence for attempting to join ISIS in Syria in 2015. According to court papers, al-Kian was a school teacher who preached in a local mosque. The condition of two women has

stabilised, medical officials at Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva said Wednesday. Security forces began an investigation and have questioned associates of al-Kian including two brothers of al-Kian suspected of involvement in the attack. with police and security agencies over possible further outbreaks of violence. Be’er Sheva Mayor Reuven Danilovich said security measures would be increased. Israel police are on high alert across Israel noted commissioner Kobi Shabtai, who faced criticism from right-wing demonstrators over a lack of police action regarding violence in the Negev. Minister of Public Security Omer Bar-Lev defended Shabtai, stressing it was not the time to attack the commissioner. Bar-Lev said police would pursue those involved. “We won’t rest until the national terror is over, we’ll chase down the terrorists wherever they are,” he noted on Twitter. Bennett led condolences to the families. Rabbi Kravitzky was a father of four who served a local synagogue and ran a soup kitchen for elderly residents. He had served for Chabad in Moldova before returning to Be’er Sheva. Chabad Be’er Sheva’s Rabbi Schneur Gorelik described him as a “mainstay” of the neighbourhood, adding, “He will be remembered as a man of dedication and giving.” Yitzhak and Habas both had three children according to reports. Bennett praised those who fought al-Kian as they had “showed bravery and avoided additional victims”. “We will work with a heavy hand against those who commit terror,” he said. Bennett added, “We’ll act harshly against terrorists. We’ll chase them and reach all their collaborators.”

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid commented, “Anyone who tries to harm innocent civilians needs to know that Israel will find them and hold them accountable.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz said that anyone who encourages attacks “will pay the price”. “The IDF and the security forces will take and will use all means to prevent terrorist incidents as much as possible,” he noted. Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked said that a “vile and subhuman terrorist” murdered innocent people. Shaked called for the civilians who apprehended al-Kian to receive recognition for their bravery. Joint List leader Ayman Odeh was shocked by the attack, stating “violence is not our way and we must condemn it with all our might”. President Isaac Herzog commented, “Terrorism will not overwhelm us or undermine our right to exist in our country.” Religious Zionist head Bezalel Smotrich said that “nationalist extremism among Israeli Arabs is a ticking time bomb,” and called on the government to use a “heavy hand” and “zero displays of understanding and zero tolerance”. Smotrich vowed to “do everything to restore governance and personal security to the citizens of Israel”. Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blasted a “murderous attack” and criticised Bennett’s government strategy over the Negev. “They must avoid all political motives,” referring to the Islamist Ra’am Party, which represents the Bedouins.

Ra’am condemned the attack in a statement. “Arab citizens of the state are law abiding and reject from their midst anyone using violence against fellow citizens.” The party said that there was a need to “preserve the delicate fabric of Israeli society” and “promote tolerance” at a difficult time. The Hura Municipality issued a statement condemning the attack. “Harming innocent citizens is a criminal and despicable act of terror,” they wrote. “The municipality calls on all residents of the Negev, Arabs and Jews alike, to maintain the good relationship they have had until now.” Negev Bedouin Authority leaders issued

a statement condemning the attack, “Violence is not our way and we completely disapprove of any violence and extremism.” “At the same time, we call on our Jewish brethren not to be led by the uproar of extremists in Jewish society and not to generalise from what happened today to the whole of Bedouin society. What the stabber did today hurts and wounds all the residents of the Negev, both Jewish and Bedouin.” The attack brought a global response. US State Department spokesperson Ned Price condemned an “abhorrent terrorist attack” and stood by Israel. “We stand ready to provide support to the Israeli government’s efforts to investigate this heinous crime,” Price said at a press briefing. US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides described a “despicable terrorist attack”. “This has to stop! My heart goes out to the victims and their families”, tweeted the ambassador. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was “appalled” by the terror attack in Be’er Sheva. “The UK stands in solidarity with the people of Israel and my thoughts are with the victims and their families.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said, “We are horrified at the news of the latest terror attack in Israel, during which an extremist with previous links to ISIS murdered four people and wounded two others. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families.” The Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group applauded a heroic attack.

Bennett to visit India Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will make his first official visit to India next weekend. Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Bennett for a state visit at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow last October. This visit marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of relations between Israel and India. The leaders will strengthen a strategic alliance between the countries and expand bilateral ties. Bennett will also meet senior government officials and the Jewish community in the country. “We will continue leading the way for our countries’ relations,” he said. “Modi restarted relations between India and Israel and this is of historic importance. And therefore we have seen fit to establish, at Kupat Ha’ir, the “Rabeinu Chaim Fund”, to continue tzedakah activities l’ilui nishmaso, And each individual who is able to give a sum of 1000$ (in installments for 36 months) l’ilui nishmaso and to continue these tzedakah activities, And bs”d a trustworthy shaliach will daven every day at the tziyun of Maran zy”a for all the donors, that he will continue to advocate for them in Shamayim.

Hundreds of thousands mourn death of ‘Sar HaTorah’ BY DAVID SAFFER

The Chief Rabbi of Israel, David Lau, and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett led tributes to Rabbi Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim Kanievsky zt”l who passed away in Bnei Brak last Sunday. Around 750,000 heartbroken mourners packed streets, hung on balconies and roof tops to glimpse the funeral procession of the esteemed Tzaddik, known as the “Prince of Torah” to Zichron Meir Beis HaChayim for burial on Sunday. Every newspaper in Israel regardless of religiosity and political bias headlined the funeral as the front page. Chief Rabbi Lau said Israel had lost a “giant of a generation”, Bennett described the Belarusian-born rabbi as the “leader of our generation” whose death was a “great loss to the Jewish people”. Bennett called for tight security to avoid another stampede tragedy like Mount Meron last year. Police and security forces closed major highways to Tel Aviv during the funeral and monitored the huge crowds. A crush was avoided with only a few minor injuries reported by Magen Dovid Adam. Revered globally Rabbi Kanievsky was head of the Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox community making up around 12% of Israel’s population. He died at home last Friday aged 94. Efforts to resuscitate him failed. Bennett, recalling the modest and sparing way of life of the esteemed scholar, noted in his cabinet meeting address, “The large-scale mourning is a uniquely Jewish moment. The cultural heroes of the Torah world are not material giants, they are giants of the spirit. They are people who have dedicated their lives to Torah and mitzvot, to in-depth study and the preservation of tradition. “The name of Rabbi Kanievsky will be remembered as an important part of the Torah history of the people of Israel. The son of the Steipler and the nephew of the Chazon Ish, he continued in their path, after the Holocaust, in the Land of Israel, preserving the Torah world of the destroyed communities of Europe. May his memory be blessed.” An outpouring of grief and tributes followed the announcement of Rabbi Kanievsky’s death. HaGaon HaRav Moshe Sternbuch heard about Rabbi Kanievsky’s passing during a Purim seudah. “The shechinah is with us on Purim and now the shechinah has been removed from Klal Yisrael,” he said. HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein commented, “He didn’t look at anything except for Torah. Even when he travelled, he was always with a Gemara, with such unbelievable bekiyus. He was also a ba’al mofsim.” HaGaon HaRav Meir Tzvi Bergman said, “It’s a loss that can’t be replaced. There’s no one else like him.” He added, “It seems to me that there wasn’t a Talmid Chacham like HaRav Chaim, in recent generations. You

could ask him about anything and he knew the answer.” Rabbi Aryeh Deri of the Sephardic Charedi group told Channel 11 that he “transcended definition”. President Isaac Herzog noted, “Love of the Torah, his modesty, his humility and his spiritual leadership will be missing for the yeshiva world and the entire people of Israel.” Foreign Minister Yair Lapid described Rabbi Kanievsky as an “important and meaningful leader in the lives of many Jewish people”. Defence Minister Benny Gantz added, “Beyond his greatness when it came to religious law, Rabbi Kanievsky was a man with deep life wisdom. He cared for the Torah, and he cared for humankind.” Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu said that the people of Israel had lost a “huge scholar” who was a “key link in the chain of Torah transmission from generation to generation”. Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion said that Rabbi Kanievsky was a “walking Sefer Torah”. “He was always with a sefer and learning,” recalled Lion. “He didn’t speak much but his yes or no would speak volumes, as well as his brachos.” Lion added, “After a meeting with him, I would have a feeling of spiritual fulfilment for a long time. We simply miss him. I feel that we lost a figure who was so significant in the Jewish world.” He continued, “People from all stripes of

society gathered around him. People with knitted kippos visited him, secular people, Litvaks, and chassidim. He belonged to everyone.” Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan, “One of the greatest rabbis of our time. A prominent authority for the Ultra-Orthodox community, his leadership combined Torah and Jewish law with wisdom and respect.” US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides tweeted, “What an incredible loss.” New York City Mayor Eric Adams wrote, “May his memory be for a blessing and may his wisdom and good works continue to inspire.” In the UK, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis led tributes. “He was a preeminent leader, renowned for his humility, dedication to his people and extraordinary scholarship, earning him the title ‘Sar HaTorah’, Prince of Torah,” he said. Thousands gathered outside Rabbi Kanievsky’s modest Bnei Brak home when they heard he had collapsed to pray as resuscitation attempts took place. Only close relatives were allowed in his room with security guarding the property. The Bnei Brak Beis Din headed by HaGaon HaRav Amram Fried issued a list of dinim for residents including participation by everyone in the funeral. HaRav Shevach Tzvi Rosenblatt, HaGaon HaRav Tzvi Weber and HaGaon HaRav Massoud Ben-Shimon on Motzei Shabbat instructed all businesses in Bnei Brak to close until after the funeral. The funeral began at noon with Tehillim by HaGaon HaRav Moshe Smotney and selichos by HaGaon HaRav Moshe Bauer. HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Zilberstein, Rosh Yeshivas Ponevezh HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein and Rabbi Kanievsky’s son, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Kanievsky, Rosh Yeshivas Tiferes Tzion and Kiryat Melech gave moving eulogies. Speaking about his greatness, HaRav Shlomo reportedly recalled. “When Abba would arrive home from kollel, the food was always ready on the table. Abba was makpid not to eat without Ima. If she wasn’t sitting at the table, he wouldn’t eat. And if it would take more than a minute or two before Ima sat down, he would immediately turn to his shtender and begin learning. These may seem like simple and minor things but we saw them with our own eyes. These things were symbolic of the way my father lived and the devotion he had.” HaRav Moshe Smotney appointed HaRav Chaim’s youngest son, HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Shaul Kanievsky, as the Rav of Lederman Shul. Rabbi Kanievsky is survived by his children and extended family.

24 MARCH 2022

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK BY YOSSI SAUNDERS

It was with deep shock and profound sadness that I received the news last Friday that the Gadol Hador had passed away aged 94. World Jewry has lost its undisputed leader. Can all the countless people who desperately need salvations of all sorts and relied on him endure without his famed blessings and charity work? To our readers who may not be so familiar let me explain. Reb Chaim Kanievsky and his late Rebbetzen Batsheva Z”TL were a rabbinic couple who made themselves available with an open home in Bnei Brak for any person regardless of background, in a way that no one else alive today ever did. It didn’t matter to them if the people were old or young, askenazi, sefardi, chasidish, mizrachi or non-religious; they helped them all. She used to sit there and sell his seforim after people got blessings from him. After the Rebbetzen passed away several years ago, Reb Chaim continued to see people all day long, despite his age. I myself was lucky to get a blessing from him almost 10 years ago and I was struck by how precious time was to him. He

valued every second and didn’t even waste a single minute of learning Torah. As he looked me in the eye, he said the words ‘Aibishter Helfen’ (Hashem should help you in Yiddish) and was straight back down in his sefer learning. His sons reported how he never ate until his wife was at the table, and if she wasn’t ready, he would grab a sefer and start learning, even if just for a minute or two. They said that they would play a game with him, opening random verses across the Tanach, and asking him for the source. He would not only source it all correctly but would add

Grunewald said, by learning Torah for 18 hours every day, Reb Chaim exemplified the deep learning of b’iyun, through the learning of bkiyos, in other words his vast knowledge got deeper and deeper the more ground he covered. People think he was automatically going to become a gadol hador. After all they say, look at his yichus! His father was the Steipler, his uncle the Chazan Ish; his father in Law Reb Elyashiv. Good start! His wife’s grandfather was the famous Tzadik of Yerushaliam Reb Aryeh Levine, who famously once told the doctor that his

Reb Chaim Kanievsky and his late Rebbetzen Batsheva Z”TL were a rabbinic couple who made themselves available with an open home in Bnei Brak for any person regardless of background, in a way that no one else alive today ever did. Torah thoughts to each verse. His greatness in Torah was unsurpassed across the Jewish world and in the words of my Daf Hayomi shiur Rebbi, Eli Stefansky of 8mindaf.com, he simply ‘outworked his generation.’ As my Chavrusa Rabbi

wife’s foot was causing them both pain. How about his brother in law Reb Yitzchok Zilberstein who gave us such an emotional hesped. Or the fact that Reb Aryeh Leib Steinman was his mechutan. People can perhaps be forgiven for thinking it was tailor made for him. However, this was simply not the case. There are plenty of people who have great yichus yet never make it. What about Esav? Yaakov for a twin, Yitzchok for dad and Avraham for zeidy - yet look how he turned out! So we must understand that he earned his revered and lofty position by simply working and working harder and harder each day in and each day out for 94 years struggling away to master the Torah. And master it he did. As his brother-inlaw said in his tearful hesped, he learned it all on a yearly cycle- all of talmud bavli, yerushalmi, rambam, shulchan aruch, sifre, sifra, mechilta, midrashim and the rest. He was famous for finishing the whole Torah each year on Erev Pesach. He would make a small lchaim after the siyum, then open a gemoroh Berachot and start all over again with minimal fuss. This year as it was a leap year, he finished it a month early, last week then died a day later… Even Hashem waited for him to finish his annual cycle. I have heard first hand stories of how people literally hung around him all day and his patience never wore thin. Many famous stories have abounded in the last week. A video circulated shows how he was once learning the laws of grasshoppers and the exact specimen of grasshopper under discussion flew in from the window to his table. His father-in-law Reb Elyashiv remarked that these things only happened to the Rishonim (medieval Talmud scholars), not to people nowadays! He knew things through Ruach Hakodesh too. In our Daf Yomi shiur, we saw

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

a Bet Shemesh man who was childless for 20 years had had a baby last year, after Reb Chaim told him to build a Mikveh. His brother who also lived in Bet Shemesh was childless for 14 years and had a baby after Reb Chaim told him to check the local store for proper Terumot and Maaeserot. He told Reb Chaim that it was owned by a frum person, yet Reb Chaim insisted. Upon further investigations they found the frum man was a fraud. A man once came to him when his father was ill and asked Reb Chaim advice on which name to add for him as a merit to be healed. Reb Chaim said Achasverosh? The man pressed him for a real answer. Reb Chaim said perhaps Haman? When he went back to his father to report, he burst into tears and revealed that he was not properly Jewish. A politician once came to him and asked for a blessing to win a local election. Reb Chaim asked him if he was a Kohen. The man said no and again asked for a blessing, to which Reb Chaim asked him once again if he was a Kohen. A few days later the rival candidate named Cohen won the election. There is a famous Torah saying that ‘righteous people, after they are dead are still called alive.’ The video circulating this week of Reb Chaim and his Rebbetzen saying their morning berachot aloud, has surely inspired thousands around the world to do the same, and is a classic example of how this saying becomes actualized amongst the very greatest of our generation. He famously had no idea of local street names and didn’t know the workings of money changing, yet he knew Torah by heart. To understand for a minute how these people live, my father Rabbi Saunders reminded me of the story of Rabbi Dovid Povarsky Z”TL Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevitch who was in his nineties and his wife was frail, so he offered to do the cooking on one condition; that she showed him which was the meaty side! These people know complicated parts of Torah on the tip of their tongue and can see from one end of the world to the other, yet don’t bother themselves with things that most people take for granted. It is a level we can scarcely imagine, yet we should be proud that these people have existed in our generation. As this week’s rashi tells us just before revi, all world Jewry should share in the suffering of our tzadikim. We have all lost our leader and are in mourning. It is a worrying time, with a terrible war unfolding in Ukraine the threat of Nuclear War over our heads, and prices going meshuga all over the world, and we must continue to pray to Hashem for salvation. Yet whilst we cannot all step up to the plate and become the next Reb Chaim, if we all take on one extra thing then the perhaps the world will be a better place. I will end with this observation. Reb Chaim didn’t have Twitter or Facebook, yet he still had 750,000 followers at his funeral.

Reflections on the life of the Torah leader of the generation Harav Chaim Kanievsky ‫זצ”ל‬ BY RABBI MORDECHAI ULLMAN

The Jewish nation suffered an irreplaceable loss last Friday afternoon, Shushan Purim, with the sudden passing of the leading sage of the generation, Hagaon Rabbeinu Chaim Kanievsky zt”l. Born in 1928 in Pinsk, Belarus, he was the eldest son of the highly regarded Rav Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky of Hornosteipel (“the Steipler”) and Rebbetzin Pesha Miriam of the famed Karelitz family, which counted among its members the revered Torah giant Harav Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, author of the Chazon Ish. From a young age, Chaim was raised in an environment permeated with love of Torah, meticulous adherence to Mitzvos and care and concern for others. At his Bris, which was attended by many distinguished Torah personalities, (among them the author of the Torah Temimah), he was named Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim, a name sourced in the two distinguished families from which he descended. The Steipler’s choice of name, as well as his decision to serve as sandek at the Bris, was due to his concern not to offend others (as heard from Rabbi Shraga Kallus). As a very young child, he would be sung to sleep with the names of the books of the Tanach as well as the tractates of Mishnah, so that when he began to speak, the young Chaim’s first words were “Brachos, Peah, Demai” and so on. When Chaim was aged 6, immediately following the Purim Seudah in 1934, the Steipler and his family left Pinsk and headed to Eretz Yisrael, from where they would never depart. The family settled in the then-fledgling town of Bnei Brak. The Steipler taught the young Chaim large portions of Torah, including Tanach and Talmud, most of which he completed prior to his Bar Mitzvah. As a teenaged Bochur, Chaim attended

the Lomza Yeshiva in Petach Tikva, which counted among its staff the revered Rav Elazar Shach zt”l, eventually the Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevezh, Bnei Brak. His contemporaries from his Yeshivah years would later testify that as a young student, Chaim was not as naturally sharp as the others, but his diligence and love of Torah would later set him many levels higher than his more gifted peers (as heard from Harav Chaim Sarna zt”l). He drew close to his uncle, the Chazon Ish, from a young age and until the latter’s passing in 1953, Rav Chaim drew an enormous amount of Torah from him and he would later become an authority of the opinion and customs of the Chazon Ish, which are held dear by tens of thousands until this day. When he was suggested as a match for the daughter of the late Posek Ha’Dor, HaRav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l, the Chazon Ish informed Rav Elyashiv that the bachur Chaim was the “Rogachover of the generation” (a mind-boggling comparison - considering the young age of the Choson - with the pre-war genius from D’vinsk, Harav Yosef Rozen zt”l). Years later, when Rav Chaim published his magnum opus “Derech Emunah” on the Rambam’s then-less-learned laws on matters pertaining to the Land of Israel (a topic revived by the Chazon Ish upon the renewed settlement of the Jewish people in the Holy Land), Rav Elyashiv is said to have remarked, “At the time I understood Rav Chaim would be the Rogachover in “Bekius” (fluency in wide portions of Torah). Now, I understand the Chazon Ish intended this in “Geonus” (brilliance and depth) too.” (As heard from Harav Eliyahu Mann Shlita). In a letter from that period of time, the Chazon Ish refers to the young Chaim as a “Master of the entire Talmud” - this when he was in his early 20s! Slowly, the fame of Rav Chaim spread

The opinion of Rav Chaim, whose total devotion to Torah meant that he never found the time to familiarise himself with the streets of the neighbourhood in which he resided since 1934, was respected by an estimated one million Jews worldwide. worldwide, and for over half a century, he was renowned as the “person who completed the entire Torah each year”. Many firstborn men are accustomed to partaking in a Siyum on the day before Pesach in lieu of the fast that is otherwise imposed on them. To justify a Siyum, one ordinarily need only complete the study of a single tractate of Talmud. Rav Chaim however would complete - annually - the entire Tanach, Talmud Bavli, Talmud Yerushalmi, Zohar, Midrash, Rambam, Arba’ah Turim and Shluchan Aruch. This endeavour was achieved through daily “obligations” that Rav Chaim imposed upon himself, with a rigorous daily schedule which began at 1:30am, such that by the time the rest of the world had awoken, he had already studied more than than many Torah students achieve in several weeks. (One year, when Erev Pesach was on Shabbos, Rav Chaim chose to complete an additional tractate – the lgest one, Bava Basra – following the Siyum which had been brought forward to the weekday.) Rav Chaim thus gained breathtaking knowledge of the entire Torah. It is wellknown that when he was once asked how many times the name of Moshe appears in the Torah, he provided the answer, which was then checked against a

computer. The computer’s answer did not tally with Rav Chaim’s, which led to confusion until it was realised that the computer included the combination of “Mem-ShinHeh” which also spells “Masheh (Be’reihu)” and “(Mih’yos) Miseh”, which may appear to spell Moshe but do not. It was said that Rav Chaim’s awe-inspiring familiarity with all sections of Torah would have been considered a novelty even among contemporaries of the Chasam Sofer. Miracle stories abound involving Rav Chaim and the wine used at his annual Siyum. It was understood and accepted throughout the Torah world that a blessing from Rav Chaim held special power and words that emanated from his mouth were known to often reflect “Ruach HaKodesh”. For example, a young person approaching their thirties approached Rav Chaim requesting a blessing to find their match. To their astonishment, Rav Chaim informed the petitioner that their destined spouse “had not been born yet”. Only when they were engaged a couple of months later - to a convert (halachically considered “reborn”) did they understand Rav Chaim’s intention (as heard from Rabbi Dovid Gottlieb). It is also well-known that during the 1991 Gulf War, he assured all that no

missiles would fall in Bnei Brak in the merit of the Kedushas HaTorah. The windows of his flat were left open and when his wife said she could hear the air-raid siren he calmly reassured her that they would be safe. His entire day was measured in seconds and in his later years he abbreviated his standard blessing to a shortened version so as to save time. Nonetheless, he selflessly alloted time to receive the thousands who sought his blessing and advice and also penned replies to tens of thousands of letters over the years. When his reply arrived from Rashbam Street 23 to the hopeful author, the responses were most often succinct, but the choice of words was then analysed and considered by accomplished scholars. (One book, “Kol Mishalosecha” contains over 100,000 questions and answers between Rav Chaim and his student Rav Eliyahu Mann.) The opinion of Rav Chaim, whose total devotion to Torah meant that he never found the time to familiarise himself with the streets of the neighbourhood in which he resided since 1934, was respected by an estimated one million Jews worldwide, for all understood that he represented pure Torah and unbiased halachic authority. As noted, he would complete the study of the entire classic books of the Torah each year. A regular year consists of 12 Hebrew months, whereas in a leap year there is an additional month. In the additional month, Rav Chaim would author a new book often on the most obscure parts of Torah. A famous one is named “Karnei Chagavim” on the Kosher signs of locusts and it was related at his funeral that a locust remarkably turned up on his windowsill when he once struggled to grasp the anatomy of the creature. (There was at least one sequel to this incident and the reader is referred to a shiur by Rabbi Daniel Glatstein on Torahanytime.com.). Not only did he author dozens of well-received works, he inspired the authorship of hundreds more, as numerous scholars were keen to print their series of questions to him on all portions of Torah. (A cursory search of https://beta.otzar. org for Rav Chaim’s name (as popularly spelled ‫ )הגר”ח קניבסקי‬returns 35,554 results in 6054 Sefarim, journals and other published material). Rav Chaim was supported in a most outstanding manner by his devoted Rebbetzin Batsheva Esther zichrona liveracha, until her passing approximately 10 years ago. This remarkable lady, who warmly drew thousands of people closer to Hashem, was the subject of a biography published by ArtScroll after her sudden passing in 2011. The love and care that was evident between this exalted couple was widely known. (Their care for others was likewise remarkable, with their house open to strangers for decades, with many a despondent soul finding a place of solace, a warm meal and even a bed.) Each day, upon his return from Kollel Chazon Ish, his meal would be waiting for him, yet Rav Chaim would refrain from eating unless his wife was ready to eat too. If the Rebbetzin was not ready, he would return to his sefarim - even for one minute, such was his devotion to Torah and his respect for his wife (as told over by their son Rav Shlomo Kanievsky at the Levaya). It was

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

NEWS 9 said that Rav Chaim would question what Bracha to make on items of food, such was his lack of familiarity with materialism. Together they raised their distinguished family in their most humble abode, with ageing furniture and zero luxury. Their Chol Ha’moed excursion was a trip to a zoo, to enable them to recite the Bracha “Meshaneh Habri’os” on monkeys. Rav Chaim was exceptionally sensitive to the needs of others. He was accustomed to paying a daily visit to his mother, until she passed away in the early 1970s. At that point, Rav Chaim’s widowed sister moved in to care for their ageing father, the Steipler. Rav Chaim reasoned that the visits were no longer necessary, so he stopped them. Shortly after, the Steipler remarked that he too appreciated the visits, so Rav Chaim continued to visit his father until the latter’s passing in 1986. And from then on, Rav Chaim, whose every moment was precious, would pay a short daily visit to his widowed sister (Echoes of the Maggid, Rav Paysach Krohn). Rabbi Krohn related a further story regarding how Rav Chaim’s every move was dictated by Halacha. He was once in hospital and, following a medical procedure, his doctor wanted to test the strength in Rav Chaim’s arm so he asked Rav Chaim to write something down. The majority of the world would have written their name, not so Rav Chaim who wrote the words from the Shabbat morning prayers, “Yekum Purkan min Shemaya” may redemption arise from Heaven. The doctor may have been surprised but Rav Chaim’s reason was simple; the Talmud in Kesuvos states that one should not leave their name on a scrap piece of paper lest a non-scrupulous individual obtain it and pen a fraudulent promissory note in the signatory’s name. His meticulous observance of Halacha was also an inspiration to all. When a person once informed the Rav of his intention to extend their house by one room, Rav Chaim’s reaction was something to the tune of: “You have an extra half hour to spend on searching for Chametz?!” Perhaps one way to explain the power of his blessings and his worldwide influence is through a story that took place in the 1960s. A well-connected individual had tried to have their son enrolled in the Ponovezh Yeshiva, but the Ponovezher Rav Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman apologised – there was simply no space. The Ponovezher Rav later met Rav Chaim who further requested for the boy to be accepted. On the spot, the Ponovezher Rav accepted the boy, explaining that “if the Torah itself is requesting this of me, how can I refuse?” This took place when Rav Chaim was in his early 30s! (Introduction to a Haggada shel Pesach with Torah thoughts of Rav Chaim). Our generation was immensely fortunate to have had in our midst a personification of the statement of our sages, “One who engages in Torah for its own sake merits many great things”. With his passing we are infinitely poorer. We can only hope to aspire to his levels of commitment to Torah learning and love for other Jews, and to arrive at the realisation that lasting fulfilment is within reach of all those who devote their lives to learning and keeping Torah.

A Eulogy for Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

It happens a few times every century. We lose a Torah giant who seems irreplaceable. The gaping hole left behind feels irreparable. With the death of Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l so much Torah has alighted back to heaven, and we are left to wonder how it can be recovered. Who was this man known, reverently, as the “sar HaTorah” (prince of Torah), and how can his prodigious life inspire our own?

SACRIFICE FOR TORAH

Rav Chaim redefined the value of personal sacrifice on behalf of Torah study. Early in his marriage, he and his wife lived in a joint residence with several other couples sharing a common kitchen. The added expense of renting an apartment with a “private” kitchen would have distracted his Torah study. Legendarily, he completed an in-depth review of the of core “corpus” of Torah on a yearly basis, making an annual siyum on erev Pesach. Once, after conducting a non-scheduled siyum, he reported that the current celebration was a “special siyum”, having completed Torah “in his dreams”. Though difficult for most of us to conceptualize, theoretically, Torah can become so emotionally internalized, that a cogent form of Torah streams through our subconscious. To fully immerse in Torah study, he deliberately disconnected himself from

the world around him. He was unfamiliar with the street signs in his neighborhood. A few days after gifting a significant donation to one of Rav Chaim’s many charities, a wealthy donor paid him a return visit. Prior to the visit, the donor was cautioned that Rav Chaim would not remember him, even though they had met just a few days earlier. Rav Chaim consciously “unburdened” his mind of any non-Torah information to free it for Torah storage. He will always be remembered by his phrase ‘bouha bouha’- an anacronym for the phrase beracha v’hatzlacha (a wish of “welfare and success”). Answering thousands of daily requests for blessings, he could not waste time reciting the entire phrase, but instead uttered this shortened version of “bouha”. For most of us, far removed as we are from this level of commitment to Torah study, this type of behavior would be rude, irresponsible or even grandstanding. For Rav Chaim these measures were completely consistent with his massive lifelong dedication to Torah consumption and his relentless attempts to retain his Torah knowledge.

PASSION NOT BRILLIANCE

An educator in Israel once encouraged his lesser-talented students by citing Rav Chaim’s success as an example of greatness achieved with limited or slightly above-average intellectual gifts. Feeling remorseful about this horrible insult, this

educator pleaded with Rav Chaim for forgiveness. Rav Chaim refused the apology and assured the educator that he had been absolutely correct in his assessment. Rav Chaim’s massive Torah accomplishments were the product of prodigious and unrelenting commitment and not a function of his outstanding brilliance. Once Rav Chaim was asked why he married relatively late in life. He commented that he was a “troubled” boy (I can’t imagine what that means) and therefore his shidduchim weren’t smooth. His enormous achievements demonstrated that passion and self-sacrifice are far more essential than genius or intellectual firepower.

AVOIDING THE LIMELIGHT

His absolute and unconditional dedication to Torah study severed him from any interest in political appointment or organizational leadership. This shy giant spent his entire life secluded in a small run-down study, pondering the cosmic works of Hashem’s will. Toward the end of his life, political influence and public leadership were involuntarily thrust upon him, but it never interested him, nor did he ever actively pursue it. Ironically, he never sought attention or public image, yet he became the most identifiable and beloved Torah figure of the past 50 years, extending his reach far beyond the charedi circles he occupied. He ran from honor, but it chased him down! Despite his fanatical commitment to Torah study, he answered thousands of daily requests for halachik rulings, berachot and general guidance. Several hundred people visited his rickety study, and additionally, he replied to hundreds, if not thousands of daily “questions” and requests. It was undoubtedly ‘painful ‘ for this man to sacrifice so much of his Torah study time to answer these requests, but his love for our people could not be repressed. This private reclusive master of Torah became the most sought-after man of his era, offering comfort and confidence to so many across a broad spectrum of the Jewish world. Understanding Da’as Torah So far this profile could apply to many Torah figures: Torah scholarship, prodigious work-ethic and selfless commitment to the physical and spiritual welfare of other Jews. Perhaps the most distinctive and least understood aspect of Rav Chaim’s life was his “wielding” of da’as Torah: issuing berachot, supplying medical and financial advice, rendering important political decisions, and determining social policy. Many, outside the charedi community struggle to understand the phenomenon of da’as Torah. Why should a Torah scholar render decisions which lie outside of the halachik and moral domain? Why should a Rabbi issue medical or financial guidance and how can a beracha directed to an unknown name on a piece of paper be effective? To appreciate the effectiveness of da’as Torah, we need to take a few steps back. We live in a fallen world, which has lost its access to supernatural input. In a more ideal world, decisions were shaped by supernatural input accessed through

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

24 MARCH 2022 prophets and through the oracle known as urim v’tumim (embedded in the golden breastplate of the cohen gadol). Life was a blend between personal choice, rational decision making and supernatural guidance. Where, exactly, supernatural input ended and personal volition began, probably differed from person to person and from situation to situation. For everyone, though, life was a synthesis of ration and of higher wisdom. Though prophecy was lost around in the 5th century BCE, supernatural information remained available through Torah mastery. If Torah is the source of reality, conceivably, all reality can be perceived through mastery of Torah knowledge. Our Chazal operated in a post-prophetic era, but enjoyed access to supernatural information through their colossal command of Torah. My Rebbe, HaRav Aharon Lichtenstein was once asked if he believed in da’as Torah. His reply astonished me, and it took me years to fully appreciate. He replied that he believed in the concept of da’as Torah, but didn’t think there was anyone alive, whose Torah mastery equipped them to practice it. Fundamentally though, there is a level of mastery of Torah knowledge which grants access to information which science and ration cannot. Perhaps we don’t possess people of that stature, but the concept is valid. Hundreds of thousands of intelligent and pious people did see Rav Chaim as a provider of da’as Torah and revered his ability to operate in the non-rational realm of ru’ach hakodesh. Once, while authoring a sefer about the kashrut of grasshoppers, he was perplexed by an anatomical question which could only be solved by observing an actual grasshopper. Immediately and unexpectedly, a grasshopper landed on his window sill. These stories do not happen to you and me. He would often issue differing answers about identical questions. As his decisions weren’t based upon a rational assessment of the facts, identical questions would often yield vastly different answers. Decisions delivered through da’as torah will never be based on objective facts or cold logic but upon higher truths. Most people do not conduct their lives based on da’as Torah. We believe that, in a non-prophetic world of empiricism we are “forced” to rely on science, statistics and “common sense” to decide questions unrelated to halacha and to religion. We don’t seek generic berachot or terse and impersonal abbreviations of “bouha” to provide medical healing. Instead, we solicit personal prayers from those who are familiar with the subject of their prayers. We seek guidance from professionals and medical advice from trained practitioners. Those who do operate through da’as Torah, navigate their lives differently. Rav Chaim was their cornerstone, and his passing is traumatic. May his life inspire us to become better versions of ourselves, within our own personal ideologies and cultural norms. May his broad-spectrummed appeal expand our own imaginations, so we can better appreciate attitudes which differ from our own. Zelensky links Russian conflict to ‘final solution’ in Knesset address

Volodymyr Zelensky addressing to the Knesset BY DAVID SAFFER

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Israeli efforts to arrange peace talks with Russia in Jerusalem and also linked the conflict to Nazi German leaders ‘final solution’ during World War Two in a Zoom address to the Knesset on Sunday. The speech was broadcast live to Israeli TV channels and screened in Tel Aviv’s Habima Theatre Square for thousands of pro-Ukraine supporters. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid joined MKs for the live address. The Joint List Party boycotted the event. Zelensky did not hold back in his address which grabbed the headlines in Israeli media. “We are in different countries and in completely different conditions,” he said. “But the threat is the same, for both us and you, the total destruction of the people, state, culture. And even of the names, Ukraine, Israel.” Zelensky quoted former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, who was born in Kyiv, stating, “We intend to remain alive. Our neighbours want to see us dead. This is not a question that leaves much room for compromise.” “Listen to the language the Kremlin uses, they use the terminology of the Nazi Party,” he continued. “They called it the ‘final solution’ to the Jewish question. You remember well, I’m sure, you’ll never forget. Now Moscow uses the words ‘final solution’ again regarding us, Ukraine. We

see this on their official websites, there are quotes in the Russian media. This is what was said in Moscow.” Zelensky spoke about past atrocities committed by the Nazis in Babi Yar, where Russian missiles have struck, and in Uman, a historic pilgrimage for orthodox Jews to Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. Ukraine’s leader questioned why Israel had not provided its Iron Dome missile defence system to Kyiv. “Everyone in Israel knows that your missile defence is the best,” he reasoned. “It is powerful. Everyone knows that your weapon is strong. Everyone knows you’re doing great. You know how to defend your state interests, the interests of your people. And you can definitely help us protect our lives, the lives of Ukrainians, the lives of Ukrainian Jews. Why we can’t get weapons from you. Or why Israel has not imposed strong sanctions against Russia. Why it doesn’t put pressure on Russian business.” Zelensky concluded, “Ukrainians have made their choice. 80 years ago. They rescued Jews. That is why the Righteous Among the Nations are among us. People of Israel, now you have such a choice.” Bennett initially steered clear from Zelensky’s Holocaust comments while condemning President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked attack by Russian forces on Ukraine. He said, “Israel is extending its hand to help with the crisis in Ukraine in a range of different and diverse channels. We

are managing this regrettable crisis in a sensitive, generous and responsible way, while striking a balance among the various complex considerations. The Jewish people and the Israeli public can be proud of the contribution and aid from the State of Israel to the citizens of Ukraine.” Lapid noted, “We will continue to help the Ukrainian people as much as we can, and we will never turn our backs on the plight of people who go through the horrors of war,” he said. Unlike Bennett and Lapid, a number of Israeli MKs were critical of Zelensky’s Holocaust analogy. Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel said, “The war is awful, but the comparison to the atrocities of the Holocaust and the final solution is an outrage.” MK Yuval Steinitz commented, “War is always terrible, and the shelling and territorial conquests are unbearable for the Ukrainian people, but any comparison between a regular war, as awful as it might be, and the annihilation of millions of Jews in the gas chambers as the final solution, is an absolute distortion of history.” MK Mossi Raz added, “It was a lapse of judgment on his part if he thought that would appeal to Israelis,” he said. Religious Zionist Party Chairman MK Bezalel Smotrich felt that Zelensky’s attempt to “rewrite history and erase the involvement of the Ukrainian people in the extermination of the Jews in it” was inaccurate.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

MK Simcha Rotman commented, “I don’t speak Ukrainian, but if the translation I heard was accurate, Zelensky asked us to treat the Ukrainians like they treated us 80 years ago. Sorry, I think we’ll have to decline his request. After all, we are a moral nation. Light unto the nations.” Zelensky made another speech later in the evening with a more balanced viewpoint. “Israel has its interests, strategy to protect its citizens,” he said. Praising Bennett’s efforts to mediate with Russia, he noted that talks with Russia could take place possibly in Jerusalem. “That’s the right place to find peace, if possible,” he said. Previously, Zelensky had said mediation can only be between states, not between “good and evil”. Bennett addressed the Holocaust controversy following MK comments on Monday. “I don’t believe the Holocaust should be compared with any other event,” he said. “It was a unique occurrence in human history with a methodical and industrial scale extermination of a nation in gas chambers. An unprecedented event.” Bennett has spoken with Zelensky and Putin in recent weeks regarding talks, including flying to Moscow to meet Russia’s leader. Speaking in recent days, he said, “The differences on a number of key issues are still great. We will continue together with others in the world, to bridge the gaps and bring about an end to the war, that is the best we can hope for.” Bennett added, “The Russians originally demanded Zelensky’s removal and a disarming of Ukraine’s military, both are off the table now. Ukraine’s basic demand was to join NATO, that too has been removed so there is some progress. But like I said, there is still a long way to go.” There have been reports that Bennett may meet Zelensky in Kyiv to aid ceasefire talks. Shin Bet Security Agency have been charged with arrangements following Zelenskyt’s invitation. In related news, Bicom noted that over 13,500 Ukrainians have now arrived in Israel, 3,500 eligible to receive immigrant status under Law of Return. And over 100 tonnes of humanitarian aid have been delivered to Ukraine from Israel including medical equipment and medicines, Israeli water purification systems, tents, blankets, sleeping bags and outerwear. An additional 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid were sent to refugees on Ukraine’s border with Moldova by United Hatzalah. IsraAID has been operating in Moldova since the start of the Russian invasion. It has opened spaces in shelters in the capital and border in addition to Mobile Medical Clinics with Russian and Ukrainian-speaking doctors and nurses from Israel.

Jewish Agency launches ‘Aliyah Express’ programme BY ADAM MOSES

The Jewish Agency for Israel has launched its ‘Aliyah Express’ programme to speed up the immigration process for thousands of Ukrainian olim arriving weekly. Thousands of Jewish Ukrainian refugees have already made Aliyah in recent weeks and that number is expected to dramatically increase, especially if hostilities worsen in the country from Russian forces. The programme reduces Aliyah eligibility checks with assistance from the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, donors and foundations. The Agency is assisting in absorbing immigrants when they arrive in Israel. Dozens of employees are aiding the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration with housing in hotels on arrival. They are also working to enrol young Ukrainians in Masa co-founded by The Jewish Agency. The Israeli government has asked the Agency to help establish a situation room to coordinate organisations in the region. “The Jewish Agency continues to be at the forefront of Aliyah mobilisation efforts, in particular when it comes to Ukrainian refugees,” said Yaakov Hagoel, acting chairman of The Jewish Agency and chairman of the World Zionist Organisation.

“Combining our organisation’s forces with other formidable bodies that facilitate Aliyah will help resolve this emergency crisis facing Ukrainian Jewry. Now, they can be rescued and absorbed much faster so they can settle into their new home in Israel.” The Agency with its expertise organised humanitarian and rescue operations in Poland, Romania, Hungary and Moldova. Facilities housed over 8,000 refugees and 4,500 refugees at Jewish Agency facilities will soon travel to Israel. The Agency has rented over 7,000 beds in facilities at the border, a number that will increase by opening centres in other countries. “Seeing the Jewish world come together the way it has on behalf of Ukrainian Jewry is truly amazing,” commented Jewish Agency CEO and director general Amira Ahronoviz. “The Jewish Agency continues to be committed to rescuing every Jew from anywhere in the world and in addition to our work in Ukraine, we’re also implementing the government’s decision to resume Operation Tzur Israel, which will soon bring 3,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel. As such, we’ve expanded our operations in Ethiopia and are preparing for their arrival in absorption centres across the country. Rescuing Jews of Ukraine and Ethiopia are part of the moral duty and mission of our organisation.”

Israel integrates Ukrainian students into school system BY LILLY JOSEPH

The Israel Ministry of Education is integrating around 2,000 Ukrainian students to the school system. Officials will support children and parents arriving in Israel until integration into Israeli society. Educational, emotional and social support will benefit students, there will be therapeutic aid for parents. Support will be available for families moving to a permanent home. Challenges include placing students in schools, ulpan classes together with integration into schools and the community. The ministry is also working with 22 students in Ukraine for a teacher training program at Orot Israel College of Education to enable them to work in Jewish communities in the Diaspora. Minister of Education Dr. Yifat Shasha-Biton, said, “These children are coming to us after they have experienced difficult days, some with traumas that could accompany them for many years. The Ministry of Education is prepared with all the tools available to give these children the unique responses that they need, to make sure that we, together with the other relevant government ministries, do the best we can for them in their absorption process.” She added, “We will continue to do everything possible to help, to make the

situation easier and to support our colleagues in Ukraine. Our heart is with the students, the teachers, the parents and all the people of Ukraine.” The ministry has established a dedicated Ukraine situation room. Activities will take place in hotels and hostels. There will also be tours to heritage sites. The Ministry of Education is recruiting psychologists, counsellors and trauma experts who speak Ukrainian and Russian to aid the integration process. The Ministry’s Psychological Counselling Service will provide online support for educational staff. The situation room “Integrating new immigrants in Education” coordinates issues relating to students and parents. Representatives include the Ministry of Education, absorption and psychological counselling services, local government, youth movements, community centres and former pupils. The Ministry recently provided an online briefing to 500 teachers in Ukraine. Training included dealing with emergency situations, locating, identifying and supporting children in emotional distress and tools for emotional and community support. The plan for Minister of Education Avi Ganon will benefit Diaspora Jewry in Israel and around the world.

Holocaust survivor killed Holocaust survivor Boris Romanchenko has been killed by a Russian attack in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Germany’s Bundestag led tributes to the 96-year-old who survived four concentration camps including Buchenwald and Bergen Belsen. Romanchenko, who was not Jewish, was vice president of Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation and dedicated his life to preserving the memory of Nazi atrocities. The foundation was “deeply disturbed” by his death after being informed by his family. “His death reminds us that Germany has a special historical responsibility toward Ukraine,’’ deputy speaker Katrin Goering-Eckardt said. Finance Minister Christian Linder added that Romanchenko’s death showed the “criminal character of Russian policy” and why Germany was showing solidarity with Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have stated that over 500 civilians have been killed from Russian forces targeting Kharkiv. Romantschenko, born 1926, was taken prisoner by Nazi troops after the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and deported to Dortmond where he was forced to do hard labour. Following a failed escape, he survived Buchenwald, Peenemünde, Mittelbau-Dora and Bergen-Belsen death camps before liberation by British and US forces in 1945. Romantschenko returned to Buchenwald in 2012 where he recited a pledge by survivors to create “a new world where peace and freedom reign”.

IRGC is a terror organisation insists Lapid

NUS slammed over rapper Lowkey

BY ADAM MOSES

BY LILLY JOSEPH

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett held a regional summit hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Sharm el-Sheikh this week. UAE Crown Prince Mohammad bin Zayed attended the historic gathering in a demonstration of unity against the Iran nuclear deal this week. Israel, the UAE and Egypt are concerned the United States may remove the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from its list of terror organisations as part a nuclear deal. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has made it clear that Israel will continue to regard the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. Bennett and Lapid issued a joint statement last week on the developing issue. “The IRGC are Hezbollah in Lebanon, they are Islamic Jihad in Gaza, they are the Houthis in Yemen, they are the militias in Iraq,” noted the Israeli leaders. “The IRGC are responsible for attacks on American civilians and American forces throughout the Middle East, including in the past year. The IRGC were behind plans to assassinate senior American government officials, they are an integral part of the brutal machine of oppression in Iran. Their hands have on them the blood of thousands of Iranians and the crushed soul of the Iranian society.” Bennett and Lapid added, “The attempt to delist the IRGC as a terrorist organisation is an insult to the victims and would ignore documented reality supported by unequivocal

Jewish organisations have criticised rapper Kareem Dennis, known as Lowkey, being booked as keynote speaker at the National Union of Students’ centenary conference this month. The activist has since “pulled out of the event” according to the NUS. He is now invited to speak at NUS Liberation Conference for students from marginalised groups.. Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl condemned the decision over Lowkey to perform at the organisation’s conference. “Lowkey is an infamous Lowkey conspiracy theorist whose delusional output has long been of concern within the Jewish community,” she noted. When Jewish students questioned the choice of Lowkey for the union’s conference, NUS reportedly advised them they could use an “existing safe space” designated for students who are “sensitive to loud noise” during his performance. Responding to worries over Jewish students’ reaction to the performance, NUS reportedly replied it was more concerned about the reaction of other students if it were cancelled.

evidence. We find it hard to believe that the IRGC’s designation as a terrorist organisation will be removed in exchange for a promise not to harm Americans. “The fight against terrorism is a global one, a shared mission of the entire world. We believe that the United States will not abandon its closest allies in exchange for empty promises from terrorists.” The summit saw Bennett update el-Sisi and bin Zayed on mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine. There is concern the war will lead to a shortage of wheat. Russia and Ukraine are main suppliers of wheat to Egypt who saw their currency devalued by 14% on Monday. Egypt has lost tourism revenue from Russian and Ukrainian visitors to Red Sea resorts. The UAE and Saudi Arabia has resisted western calls to increase oil output and halt a spike in crude prices over the Ukraine conflict in Ukraine. Bennett is the first Israeli leader to stay overnight in an Arab country in over 20 years.

Knesset passes ‘citizenship’ law BY LILLY JOSEPH

The Knesset passed its controversial ‘citizenship’ law last week. Supporters of the bill cite Israel’s security as a major aspect in backing the bill. Right-wing MKs state the law is critical as legislation denies citizenship to potential Palestinians terrorists who marry Israelis. “Today we have proven that our determination to pass the law, has paid off,” Religious Zionist Party’s Simcha Rotman said. “The State of Israel is Jewish and so it will remain.” Rotman, added that ‘Israel’s defensive shield,’ will be strengthened by the bill. The left-wing Meretz and Islamist Ra’am parties opposed the bill. “We will stand by families affected by it in the Knesset and government,” Meretz said in a statement. “Members will continue to fight this law “out of concern for equality in Israel”, they added. The law is based on a temporary order passed in 2003 and renewed annually. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s coalition government will be relieved the bill has passed after failing last July. MKs at the time voted 59-59 to reject the bill. Two MKs abstained. Palestinians unable to get permits living with spouses in Israel can be deported. Palestinian spouses from Gaza have been banned since Hamas seized power in 2007.

Jewish families support rises 20%

The United Synagogue’s Chesed department has seen a dramatic rise in the number of Jewish families asking for support to make ends meet. The US used to support around 600 families at Pesach time. This year over 700 families have asked the charity for support, a 20% rise as they struggle with the double blow of lost income during the pandemic and the rising cost of living. Pesach food parcels this year for families will contain over 20 items including grape juice and fruit juice, cheese, tuna and smoked salmon, tea, coffee, jam, butter, salt and pepper and biscuits. The charity is bracing itself for greater demand after Pesach when the energy price cap is removed and fuels costs are expected to rise by more than 50%.

US Chesed needs to raise £500,000 to support its work and meet this additional demand and is holding an online fundraising campaign on Sunday and Monday. All donations will be matched. It is likely donations will also go towards supporting Ukrainian refugees in the UK. Michelle Minsky, Head of US Chesed, said: “Many of the families we have been supporting for two years were already struggling to make ends meet because of the pandemic. The Chesed department has been quietly supporting hundreds of Jewish families with a weekly food parcel. We anticipate an event bigger demand next month. We need to help hundreds of families this Pesach and beyond.” Donations: www.charityextra.com/uschesed

It’s all about the Jews OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

apartheid week. Every year there are reports of deliberate intimidation of Jewish students and every year the universities wring their hands and say there is nothing they can do. The excuses run far and wide including ‘the campaign is on the student union property so out of our jurisdiction’, ‘it’s about Israel not Jews so it doesn’t count as discrimination’ and perhaps the best (or worst depending on your point of view) is ‘we dont want to interfere with free speech’. Seriously? What utter nonsense. There is no doubt that if the Jewish society wanted to put on an event entitled ‘Palestinian Terror Week’ the uproar from the student bodies would ensure that the universities would find a reason to stop it happening. It really is one rule for the Jews and another for everyone else. The result of all this is that Jewish students have voted with

As a community we are very fortunate. We are protected by the state both by way of legislation through the Equality Act and in practical terms by the Government in general and largely the police in particular. Physical attacks against Jews or Jewish buildings are treated seriously and investigated accordingly. In other words, there is no tolerance for this sort of conduct. Sadly, this does not apply to attacks on Israel or Zionism. Here the Israel haters are allowed to run amok. Whether it is on social media or on the streets, anything said about Israel is fair game. Apartheid, genocide, organ harvesting are regularly claimed as being practised by Israel and Israelis yet for reasons passing understanding, largely nothing is being done. The IHRA definition captures all of the above lies so why are so many institutions unprepared to take any action. In particular we are at that time of year where Jewish students are deliberately targeted by the odious campus campaign known as Israeli HALF PAGE ADVERT JAN 2020:Layout 1 09/01/2020

their feet as far as universities are concerned. Whereas 10 years ago the Manchester universities had between them about 1,000 Jewish students, the numbers now are a fraction of that, due largely to the attacks on Jews thinly disguised as anti-Israel criticism. The word ‘Jewniversities’ has entered our vocabulary as meaning those ‘safe’ institutions where Jews will not be expected to work and live in a hostile and intimidating environment. It should not be left to the students to deal with this issue but oddly that is what has been happening. The standard approach has been that this is a student issue and so should be left to the Jewish student organisations - namely the Union of Jewish Students - to deal with this. So what is the answer? It is pretty simple really. Everyone needs to get involved, not just the students. There needs to be

an awareness amongst the general Jewish community that the attacks on campus against Israel is everyone’s problem. Israel Apartheid week is a well funded well organised campaign, and even though it might not be as universal as it once was. It still represents a hate campaign aimed at Jews, and aimed at instilling lies into the minds of non-Jewish students so they will carry forward that hate with them after they finish their degrees. The mechanisms to complain are there, and we should be using them. Amnesty International is a charity so we should make representations to the charity commission. Universities are allowing Jew-hate to flourish so again, representations should be made to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission. These are just starting points, the key here is for all of us to understand that relying on a couple of communal organisations is not going to achieve what is needed, which is the eradication of Israel Apartheid week and the removal of charitable status from Amnesty International. These issues affect us all, and we all need to get involved. Now. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Declarer counted four winners in the side suits and decided to make up the remaining eight tricks by cross-ruffing the red suits. So, he took the first trick with the ace of diamonds and led to the ace of hearts to ruff a heart with the four of trumps. Next, following the normal strategy of cashing side winners on a crossruff, declarer cashed the ace and king of clubs, in case a defender could profitably discard a club on one of the red suits. Next a diamond was ruffed in dummy with the four of trumps, for declarer’s sixth trick. As declarer’s remaining trumps were all high, the contract the contract was now certain. He claimed twelve tricks by pointing out that he would crossruff the red suits. Twelve tricks made. Communities, charities and schools celebrate Purim in style

BY DAVID SAFFER

Jewish communities, charities and schools celebrated Purim in style this year with a host of fun activities. Camp Simcha spielers were out in force in North London led by their mascot Simi the Monkey. The charity sent 800 hamantaschen to staff at Great Ormond Hospital as part of their hospital outreach and Jewish awareness raising activities, as well as Purim arts and crafts for children on the wards. Children from Camp Simcha’s B’nei Mitzvah programme also packed Mishloach Manot which were delivered to families the charity supports. Ohel David Sephardi Synagogue held its first Purim party for two years. Thirty people across Essex attended a Megilla reading with festive food and drink. Chazan Shimon Tivoni said, “Our community offers a Jewish experience like no other in Essex. When people visit us for the first time, they say it is like being transported to another part of the world, like being in a synagogue in Jerusalem, Cairo or Baghdad. We offer a warm welcome to both new and familiar faces.” Sacks Morasha pupils undertook a challenge this Purim with the Megillah being read by pupils. Over the years the school has had regular participation from boys and girls who have read sections but this year there are sufficient participants to read the whole Megillah. Under the guidance and teaching of Rebbetzen Mandy Lawrence of Kinloss Synagogue, more children in key stage 2 have been eager to join the Megillah club and children with previous experience took on more Pasukim. Rebettzen Lawrence gifted each child a specially crafted ‘Yad’ to read their section. Head of Kodesh and Deputy Head, Justin Kett, said, “Purim at Sacks Morasha is not just about the creative and wacky costumes, it is about the level of engagement and connection they have to the Chag. Learning a skill, such as leining the Megillah, is something

they will take with them once they leave to go onto secondary school and beyond. We know that some of our alumni have been instrumental in creating and leading a Megillah reading at Haberdashers Girls school.” There was no stopping people Norwood supports and staff celebrating Purim this year. From hearing the megillah to receiving Mishloach Manot donated by the United Synagogue, waving greggers, wearing masks and enjoying hamntaschen generously donated by Kosher Kingdom, Daniel’s Bakery and Just Kosher. The highlight of Purim festivities was a virtual party with dancing to the tunes of DJ Dan Kraines. Kisharon hit the streets for its 2022 Purim Bucket Collection Challenge. The charity asked supporters to take part to ‘Make a Change’ to people it supports. Around 110 buckets went out across 60 individuals, shuls and services within Kisharon. Holland Park Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue and Leeds JSoc also supported the charity. Collectors were out making a ‘change’ and Kisharon gave out prizes for the collector who raised the most in a particularly creative way and with the most original costume. Each student learnt about the megilla in an easy read form together with the laws and customs of Purim. They also tied it into ways we can give to people in Ukraine. Students helped Social Enterprise in a remarkable Purim pack putting together 1800 gift bags. Kisharon College were busier than ever preparing for Purim working on a joint project providing children in Jewish Primary schools in north London with Mishloach Manot gift bags for the festival. This is the first project students have completed in partnership with local primary schools including Sinai, Etz Chaim, Alma Primary and Rimon Primary. Students packed gifts for communities hosting Purim parties at Cheder and other communal events. And they joined in with Pick It! Pack It! Gift It! Project at Kisharon Gift & Homeware Store, Equal.

Kosher l’Pesach sunflower oil shortage Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there is a severe shortage of Kosher l’Pesach sunflower oil this year. Ukraine and Russia are the two largest global producers of sunflower oil. KLBD, the kashrut division of the London Beth Din, have confirmed the following brands have been approved for use on Pesach 2022/5782 even without bearing a Kosher l’Pesach label or logo. They are Taam Tuv Sunflower Oil (sold in kosher shops), KTC Sunflower Oil and Pura Sunflower Oil. One, two and three-litre bottles of supermarket own brand sunflower oil are also approved, if bearing “H” as part of the ink jetted date code on the neck of the bottle.

Daniel Fine commented “the theme of clean speech is so current. Speech has become divisive, whilst there is so much Jewish wisdom about putting speech right and using it well. It’s inspiring to see how receptive people are about the project – from youth organisations to schools and Shuls. We even had a very positive meeting with a large city firm about taking on the project.” The Clean Speech Project is not centrally run – their soon-to-bereleased website contains ideas and resources, as well as video testimonials and endorsements from the Chief Rabbi, JTeens, various other educators and celebrities – from Uri Geller to the Maccabeats, from Karen Harris to Juliette Lipshaw. Rabbi Avrohom Zeidman, one of the project heads, commented “Whilst people can be givers in various forms, giving positive speech is a prime one.” “It would be ironic if otherwise, but nobody has had a negative word to say about the project,” Rabbi Fine mused.

Paperweight – gold and silver charity film award winner! The Paperweight Trust last night won a golden accolade at the FIFTH Charity Film Awards in central London. The winning entry, ‘Evie’s Story’, was one of 13 impressive finalists in Paperweight’s category; the film also won Silver in the People’s Choice category. Over 300 charities entered the awards this year and over 57k members of the public voted for their favourites. Designed by world renown Israeli sand animation artist Ilana Yahav, the two-anda-half-minute film tells the moving story of Paperweight client ‘Evie’ and formed part of the charity’s first ever crowdfunding campaign in 2021. An ‘Israel’s Got Talent’ Finalist, sand artist Ilana has performed at the Vatican and for the Kings of Belgium and Spain. Paperweight Chief Executive Bayla Perrin said: “Ilana’s film was thought-provoking and expressive, perfectly and beautifully illustrating the Paperweight story. We are absolutely thrilled.” Paperweight is the Jewish community’s citizen’s advice bureau. It supports people from across the entire religious spectrum, who come to Paperweight at very difficult times in their lives, frequently due to life-changing circumstances such as job loss, family breakdown, serious medical diagnosis and bereavement. In 2021 alone, Paperweight dealt with over three

Mindu Hornick MBE Book Launch In January 2020 just before Covid hit we launched the film “return to Auschwitz” featuring Mindu Hornick MBE. Now just on two years later on the 20th March over 80 people attending the book launch for Mindu’s book entitled “My Story” printed by AJR. The afternoon opened with words of welcome by Rabbi Jacobs followed by the 22 minute film. Debbie Barnes from AJR then began the book launch and invited Nick Lampert who wrote Mindu’s book to come onto the stage and interview Mindu. The conversation was amazing and so very moving. The vote of thanks was given by Keith Rowe who formerly worked for AJR and put Mindu forward for having her story written.

From the front line…

… it’s all about the money, money, money… BY JACQUELINE CURZON

Purim is over. Once more we ate, drank and were VERY merry, and have survived and perhaps vowed to drink less voraciously. Alongside this we might enjoy a little less peace and quiet, with the chiming doorbell zinging in harmony with the highly commendable visits from bar mitzvah boys raising money for their schools. However, in the cold light of day it suddenly dawns: Pesach is only 4 weeks away and we have to eat all of those goodies kindly left on our doorstep. If in doubt, leave the extra calories out, and Gift it instead. Much better, for your arteries and your mitzvot. John Major and Gordon Brown are boldly calling for Putin to be put on trial for war crimes, along with 780,000 other signatories in their petition for a Nuremberg-style trial. I was amused to read on the same page that there will be no more eggs labelled as 'free range' as all of the 145 million chickens in the UK are now living in barns due to avian flu, and can no longer strut their stuff in the open air. The link for these two stories is another former politician, Edwina Currie, whose quotes are legendary, such as ‘old people who could not afford heating bills should wrap up warm in winter’ (wearing socks, I believe), and that ‘Northerners die of ignorance and chips;’ during all of this time she was of course coddling up to Sir John Major. Her nickname ‘Eggwina' was coined after she crashed the UK egg market by 60% after issuing a warning about salmonella in eggs. The industry had more than its feathers ruffled, but I don’t think she ever got the yoke. On a lighter note, Vladimir Putin addressed a rally dressed in a $13,000 Lori Piana designer puffer jacket and a $1,500 polo neck sweater, an interesting outlay for a man on a declared annual income of only $70,000. Having said that, the UK fiscal police are now looking for any of his savings hidden in our fair isle and rumours certainly abound as to his true finances, but it is likely counted in tens of billions. Not bad for a man who has spent his whole life in public service, and small wonder the Italian government have been urged to seize a £500 million super yacht, currently moored for repairs at a marina in western Italy. Ostensibly staffed by the Russian Federal Security Services, including a dozen of Putin's personal guards and servants, the 140 metre yacht, suitably called Scheherazade, is the world's most expensive yacht, with a swimming pool with a retractable roof which converts into a dance floor, two helipads, three saunas and six guest cabins. Now that IS truly Bond style, even if I predicted some years back, Mr Putin would only likely be cast as Vlad the Bad. The ownership is a closely guarded secret but it has further poured scorn over

Jacqueline Curzon PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY

Putin, who is doing nothing to dismiss the world's view of him as a spend heavy leader sporting his Vlad Rags. Cast your mind back to the revelation last year by Navalny's investigative team that Putin owns a glittering £700 million palace on the Black Sea Coast. Clearly the Russian President enjoys the finer things in life. In this week of further bad news for peace on earth, I recall some humorous words of wisdom from long-dead voices and comedians. Winston Churchill once said (1939) on BBC radio, 'I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia; it is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.' How true it is, and how 80 years later the same quote still stands true. This remark could be repeated fresh as a daisy by today’s politicians, or likewise a particular old timer comedian who our grandparents and parents knew so well, who once said, ‘in Russia they treated me like the Czar, and you know how they treated the Czar!…..’ Well, that was Bob Hope's view on the Russians. There is no going back for Putin now he has crossed this particularly horrific watershed. In fact, the same can be said of Olaf Sholz, the modern day chancellor of Germany, who has at last shaken off the sackcloth and ashes of the Second World War and thrown off the pacifist shackles of the last 70 years. He has started to move Germany towards a positive stance against Russia by increasing defence spending, killing off the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 and leading Europe forward by putting Germany at the forefront in the defence of NATO countries. His rhetoric was a huge change from that of his predecessor Angela Merkel, who vowed to ‘defend every square meter of NATO territory.’ There will be pain though, as the country tries to break its dependence on Russian energy and nice dinners at Mr Putin's long tables in his rural dacha. On a more humorous note it is definitely

worth noting that eco terrorists around the world sometimes make huge errors due to incompetence on a grand scale. One example of this was the French eco warriors who decided they would attack a train full of foreign GM soya beans, remove them from the wagons and spread them over the tracks. In fact what they had actually spread was 1400 tonnes of best French wheat. Could they not spot ‘la difference?’ When there is a war going on between two of the largest wheat producers in the world, and there are shortages of flour, the dimwits went and ruined around 40 lorry loads of prime French produce, or in bread-making terms, 6 million baguettes, a real ‘pain!’ There are many new opportunities for people to make some money, some people have been renting out space on their driveways for years. This being a very practical proposition to people tired of parking their car on a street only to return with a ticket under the windscreen, damage to their paintwork, or worse, needing to park somewhere close to a sports venue. This is being extended with homeowners now recommended to rent out charging points on their drives to take advantage of the desperate shortage of kerbside charging units. This is definitely an example of 'plug and play'! Domestic playtime has been greatly missed off the curriculum for the daughter of Nazanin Zahari-Ratcliffe. The mother, a pawn in the Iranian nuclear chess arsenal, has survived 6 years of brutal treatment by another of the despotic regimes who fill our world. She was kept in appalling conditions with a lack of medication and with very basic food, often in solitary confinement. She, now along with the other released detainee, can try to make up for some of their lost years. This week she has called out the British establishment as to why they had not resolved the situation six years ago. But we know at the end of the day it all comes down to hard cash. There was no such happy ending for Australian hostage Shokrollah Jebeli (82), who died in custody after being deprived of all humanitarian treatment for his numerous ailments, at least they were not offered until it was largely too late. This country of supposedly ‘religious people’ who finance and support terrorism should be shunned by the world. In fact, they continue to work their wicked way with attacks on the Kurdish people, hoping that the world’s media is distracted by the goings-on in Ukraine. It does not stop there, for whilst they are actively trying to undermine this autonomous region, they are doing their best efforts to restrict oil sales - to Israel - amongst others. A sad consequence of the current Russian offensive is the death of Holocaust survivor, Boris Romantchenko (96), whose apartment block was hit by shells. He had survived 4 seperate concentration camps

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

{Buchenwald, Peenemünde, Mittelbau-Dora and Bergen-Belsen} and the depravity of the Nazi war machine, only to be killed in the much shelled city of Kharkiv. He was the vice president of the Buchenwald-Dora International Committee. May he rest in peace. You never seem to be able to turn a page, or listen to a news bulletin without being assailed by controversial topics relating to the LGBTQ issues. Whether it be the apparent success of transgender college swimmers in American colleges or the waiting lists for gender change in teenagers in the UK. For many, these are topics that are well outside of all comfort zones, and are avoided as being just one step too far. But to illustrate the divide out there; the poignant picture of a transgender college swimmer standing alone on the winner’s podium, whilst the other swimmers stand together to one side, clearly illustrates that this indeed is a hot topic and not one that will easily go away. And for tube travellers a heartwarming story, the Police and TfL, another favourite of mine, are threatening to convict passengers on the trains of harassment if they look at another passenger in an 'intrusive way. Innocent people walk this way!’ This may be well intentioned, but it puts the Police in an impossible place and asks them to be mind readers and let’s be very clear, telepathy is not their strongpoint. Every so often you come across an obituary that sparks an interest and drives you to read the article. One such was for a racing driver called Vic Elford (86). He broke many records and was the epitome of the “plucky Brit” who overcame adversity to reach enormous success. His successes were to be matched by only three other people to win six races at the dangerous Nurburgring track, and to lap the Le Mans track at more than 150 miles per hour in a Porsche 917. Another accomplishment was winning the Monte Carlo Rally in a Porsche 911, only then to get out of the car to fly to America and win the Daytona 24 hour race in a single seat Porsche 907. In the film Le Mans, he was Steve McQueen’s stunt double, but what made him stand out was that he not only drove on tracks, but also rallied in many cars including a 1962 BMC mini and was also the first person to rally a Porsche. A truly unique individual - especially as he came from working class stock - his parents ran a café in Peckham, and no - he never rallied a Reliant Robin! Another week of bad news likely coming from Ukraine, doubtless spearheaded by the erstwhile and reviled Vladimir Putin. No Trans Siberian Express will be currently running for me right now. More likely Dr Zhivago, Mr Shariff. Спасибо ! Love Jacqueline x

Queen of Puddings

Another delicious recipe from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com

This is a very traditional British dessert consisting of baked breadcrumbs thickened with custard, spread with jam and then topped with meringue. The dessert was probably so called because Queen Victoria enjoyed it! Enjoy with the older generation and make a regal celebration for them… although I think the whole family will enjoy it too! If you wish to make one large pudding cook the custard for 30 minutes. The meringue will still take 5 -10 minutes. Preparation Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes Serves: 10 Ingredients 250ml milk/ soya milk 500ml single cream/ soya cream 1 vanilla pod – split & seeds removed ~ 250g blueberries or other frozen fruits 30ml fruit liquor eg crème de cassis – optional or use Kiddush wine ~ 6 eggs separated 300g caster sugar (divided in half) 200g cake/ bread crumbs ~ 100g blackcurrant jam Method 1) Preheat the oven to 180 C/ 350 F / GM 4. 2) Heat the milk, cream and vanilla seeds in a pan until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside. 3) Mix the blueberries with fruit liquor and set aside. 4) Whisk the egg yolks and half the sugar until pale. 5) Pour into the reserved milk mixture; add cake crumbs and combine.

6) Divide the mixture between 10 ramekins and transfer to a baking tray. 7) Bake for 15-20 minutes or until set. 8) Mix the jam with a couple of teaspoons of hot water to loosen, then spoon over the set custard. 9) Top with blueberries. 10) Whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until thick, then add the remaining sugar to form a glossy meringue. 11) Pipe or spoon in thick swirls on top of the blueberries to cover completely. 12) Return to the oven for about 5-10 minutes or until slightly golden. 13) Serve warm.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com IS JUDAISM A RACE? Dear Rabbi I am studying comparative religion in University and I was wondering whether you would describe Judaism as a race or a nationality? Howard Dear Howard “Race” denotes a biological distinction, common ancestry, and so on. Yet there are Jews of every race & colour; black & white; oriental and occidental. Descendants of every conceivable race have joined the Jewish people throughout the ages, being universally recognised as Jews. So race it is not. Nationality can hardly be a definition for a people that have been dispersed throughout the world for 2000 years, without country or homeland of its own. For 2/3 of the years of its existence, the Jewish people lived among different nations: Egyptians and Babylonians, Persians and Greeks, Romans and Arabs, Germany, Poland, France, Russia, America, China, etc. During these years of dispersion the Jewish people have been joined by thousands of men & women none, whose ancestry had ever even been in the ancient Land of Israel - thus to define Jews as a nationality is historically untenable. On balance, to be a Jew means to be a part of a faith – or a religion. And once you use the very definition of religion, you invariably bring G-d into the equation. And once you bring G-d into it, you have to also understand that there is no such thing as an exclusive belief in

G-d without also determining what G-d wants from me. Once we talk about religion - to choose or accept a religion – any religion - means to accept for oneself a special way of life with a given set of responsibilities. For the Jew that means doing what you can to make this world holy, good and G-dly and making this world the better place it was always intended to be.

JUDAISM & CANCEL CULTURE Dear Rabbi What is the halachic position on “cancel culture?” Selina Dear Selina Cancel culture is the antithesis of Judaism. Someone shares an unpopular opinion and they get a swell of outrage calling out that person in a cultural boycott. It is scorched-earth partisan politics – where people with whom we disagree are denied a voice and their right to air their point of view. It drives society apart; it is driving Judaism apart; it features in relationships, families, and even entire communities. It polarizes and pits people against one another. This morning I saw a Facebook post I didn’t agree with. Guess what? I didn’t get offended. I didn’t comment. I didn’t feel the need to change their mind. I still like the person. I just kept scrolling and went on with my day! We need to fix that and appreciate that, that which united us is greater than that which divides us, and even as we are two Jews with three opinions, we must strive to maintain one heart.

CANDLES FOR THE DEAD Dear Rabbi Why do Jews light so many candles for the dead? I have seen candles lit in a shivah house of mourning, as well as people doing it on the yahrtzeit (anniversary of passing) etc. Is there particular significance to all this candle lighting? Rebecca Dear Rebecca There is evidence to suggest that Jews have been lighting candles to honour the deceased as far back as the Mishnaic period, (about 2,000 years ago): the Mishnah states that one cannot use the “fire of the dead” for the post Shabbat havdalah blessing on Saturday night because it was lit not for the living, but to honour the dead. Additionally, we find that Rabbi Yehudah the Prince, who was actually the compiler of the Mishna, commanded his household before his passing “to leave a lamp lit in its place.” Although this phrase is typically understood to refer to the Shabbat lamp, some commentaries suggest that this is also a precedent for lighting a candle for the dearly departed. The significance of the custom is per the verse that says, “The soul of man is the lamp of G d.” As such, the candle is a reminder of the soul of the loved one. Also, when a soul departs from this world, it leaves behind a dark void. The memorial candle serves to replenish this light. Jewish mysticism suggests that the soul of a loved one actually derives joy from the candle’s light. As the verse states, “The

light of the righteous will rejoice.” The reason for this is because the soul itself is made up of divine light, and it is natural to delight in something that is of a similar makeup. All this explains both the yartzeit candle lit in the home (which most light for the duration of the week of mourning, others for the first thirty days and others still for the duration of the first year of mourning).

Dedicated in memory of HaGaon HaRav Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim Kanievsky ‫ זצ״ל‬and the victims of terror to another transgression; For the reward for performing a commandment is another commandment and the reward for committing a transgression is a transgression. We never know the value of a mitzvah. People often think big mitzvah’s are important so they will turn up to a Seder table and make a brief appearance in Shul over Yomim Noraim, however small mitzvah are also important. Take the value of the advice of our sages ans you won’t go wrong! We see how one good deed can lead

to another and one bad deed to another also. It reminds me of a joke, told by Reb Eli Stefansky of 8mindaf.com A poor man once asked his neighbour for some food. The man gave him some food, but his wife was unsure as it has a bad smell. Nonetheless he still went ahead and served it to him. A few minutes later the man said he

Separately, we also light a candle on the days when Yizkor is recited, particularly before Yom Kippur because it helps to provide atonement for the souls of our loved ones. This is based on a different verse, “For the lights honour G-d.” When we light a candle to honour G-d in the merit of the dearly departed, G d promises to forgive and watch over their souls.

Perek 4: Mishna 2 was feeling unwell, and needed medication. He then asked to be taken to hospital where he died. The next day after attending the funeral and visiting the shiva, he delightedly told his wife how his one mitzva of giving food to a poor man had led to so many mitzvah’s, of bikur cholim, burying the dead and visiting a shiva house!

Israel: The “Eighth” Wonder of the World BY RABBI STEWART WEISS

“And it was on the 8th day…” So begins our Sedra of Shemini. “The 8th day,” explains Rashi, refers to the day after the week-long inauguration ceremony of Aharon and his sons. It was the day when the Mishkan was permanently erected, the day that the Kohanim started their service of bringing the offerings, the 1st of Nissan. It was a day of triumph, but also of tragedy. But with so many events happening all at once, why does the Torah cryptically choose to refer to this day as “the 8th day”? It has been suggested that the phrase “the 8th day” is a code-word for that which is “above and beyond nature”. While seven refers to the natural course of events – typified by the seven days of the week – eight goes beyond the norm, into the inexplicable, the supernatural; into the realm of higher wisdom, the wisdom of Hashem, Who sits above the seven heavens. The Mishkan and the Beit HaMikdash are places, Chazal say,

where miracles of a clearly supernatural form were present and visible every single day. The two principal themes of this Shabbat deal with a subject that is well beyond human understanding – the mystery of life and death. First, we read of the tragic demise of Nadav and Avihu, with its mystifying duality. On the one hand, Nadav and Avihu are unqualified Tzaddikim; Moshe states that fact explicitly when he tells Aharon “they are more righteous than we are”. And yet, Nadav and Avihu err when they bring “strange fire” on the mizbeyach, an act that perplexes the commentators, who struggle to discern just what Nadav and Avihu did wrong, and why they were taken so young. Aharon himself is emotionally paralyzed as he confronts these conflicting developments.

Our Maftir then goes on to describe the ritual of the Parah Adumah and evokes a similar quandary: why does the potion of the red heifer provide a spiritual cleansing of those who came into contact with death, yet at the same time renders the administering Kohen tamei, spiritually impure? Here, too, the issue is discussed at length by the parshanim, the pundits and philosophers, but at the end of the day the exact rationale of the ritual eludes us and remains largely inscrutable. This idea – that there are things in this universe that have an “8th-day” quality, things that defy logic, seem contradictory and provoke our disbelief and amazement – applies perfectly to Israel, the Land, the People, the State. For thousands of years, the world – we Jews included! – have wondered: “How

Shemini

Sidra Summary

could we have endured so many hardships, so many challenges, and still survived? How could we have been continually set upon by the great civilizations of the world, only to watch them fail in their evil designs against us and crumble into oblivion, while we remain intact? How can a nation, a people, a State be so incredibly small numerically and yet play such a leading role in the events of history?” The only possible answer is “Shemini.” We are indeed that “eighth,” that inexplicable, above-nature entity that experiences the highest highs and the lowest lows and never disappears. Our unbreakable link to Hashem tinges us with a supernatural invulnerability, energizing our existence and guiding us to greatness. We are truly the “eighth” wonder of the world. Rabbi Stewart Weiss is director of the Ra’anana Jewish Outreach Center (jocmtv@netvision.net.il) and a member of the Mizrachi Speakers Bureau (www. mizrachi.org/speakers).

“This you may eat from everything that is in the water: everything that has fins and scales in the water, in the seas, and in the streams, those you may eat" (Vayikra 11:9)

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 9:24-10:11

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – VAYIKRA 9:1-16

The sidrah begins almost a year after the Exodus from Egypt, on Rosh Chodesh Nissan. After seven days of inaugurating the Mishkan (Tabernacle), Moshe instructs Aharon to bring two special offerings, an elevation offering (olah) and a sin offering (chatat). The people are also told to bring a chatat, two olah offerings and two peace offerings (shelamim). Aharon approaches the altar (mizbeach), together with his sons, and they begin the process of bringing these offerings.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 9:17-23

Aharon and his sons finish the offerings, after which Aharon blesses the people with the priestly blessing (Rashi). Moshe and Aharon then bless the people that the Divine presence will rest upon them (Rashi).

A fire comes from heaven and consumes the offerings on the mizbeach. The people fall to the ground in awe of G-d. Nadav and Avihu, two of Aharon’s sons, bring an incense offering (ketoret) in a pan, which they had not been commanded to do. A fire descends from G-d, killing them instantly. Aharon is silent. Moshe asks two of their cousins to remove the bodies. Moshe tells Aharon and his two surviving sons, Elazar and Itamar, not to display any mourning in public. G-d says to Aharon that no one is allowed to perform the service in the Mishkan when drunk. Point to Consider: What reward did Aharon receive for his silence? (see Rashi to 10:3)

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 10:12-15

Moshe tells Aharon and his sons to eat the remaining parts of a special meal offering (mincha) that they themselves had brought that day, as well as parts of the shelamim offering which they had also brought.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 10:16-19

Moshe criticises Elazar and Itamar (Aharon’s other sons) for burning one of the chatat offerings instead of eating parts of

it. Aharon defends their actions, based on their status as mourners (Rashi). Moshe accepts Aharon’s justification.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 11:1-32

G-d teaches Moshe and Aharon some of the laws of kashrut. Only an animal with completely split hooves and which chews the cud is kosher. Therefore, animals like the camel and pig, which have only one of these characteristics, are forbidden. Fish are only kosher if they have both fins and scales. The Torah lists forbidden birds by name. Flying insects are also prohibited food, with limited exceptions (that are today difficult to identify). Kosher animals which die without proper slaughter (shechitah), as well as dead non-kosher animals, transmit ritual impurity (tumah) to one who touches them. 7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 11:33-47 The Torah lists some basic laws of how

certain utensils can become impure (tameh) and how they need to be treated thereafter. All creeping insects are forbidden to eat. Keeping these laws allows a person to become sanctified and holy.

MAFTIR (BEMIDBAR 19:1-22)

The special reading for parashat Parah is taken from the beginning of parashat Chukat, in which G-d instructed Moshe and Aharon how to purify someone who had come into contact with a human corpse. This involved slaughtering an unblemished red heifer (Parah Adumah) and mixing its ashes with water.

HAFTARAH

The prophet Yechezkel (Ezekiel) admonishes the nation for worshipping idols and desecrating G-d’s Name. However, G-d will purify us, giving us a ‘new heart’ and returning us to the Land.

Parshat Shemini:

The Kosher Mystery BY GAVRIEL COHN

This sedra is certainly a tough one to crack. Its second half details the famous rules of Kashrut: “The law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in water and all animals that creep on the ground; to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.” Kosher food is one of the most recognisiably Jewish practices. Countless households only consume these pure and clean animals, just as the Torah lists millennia ago. The verses even imply that banning us from eating creeping creatures would have been reason alone for G-d to take us out of Egypt (Rashi, 11:45). Why though is it so important? Throughout the ages, many scholars have offered various reasons for the laws of Kosher food. Yet others still have rejected them. Perhaps, as many of the medieval greats suggested, Kosher animals are more hygienic or healthier for us to consume (Rambam, Ramban, Rashbam, R’ Yosef Bechor Shor). Yet, as others countered, this

may not be true (Abarbanel). Furthermore, “even if it were so, is the Torah simply a minor medical manual?!” (Akeidat Yitzchak, see Nechama Leibowitz, sheet #7). Further proposals maintain that non-Kosher food may possess some spiritual or metaphysical harm to us or that those animals are gentler and kinder. Rav Soloveitchik argued that the Jewish dietary restrictions may be a way of elevating us over animals. By limiting what we put into our mouths we manage to “convert eating into an institution that is uniquely human, free willed, and meaningful, instead of simply a carnal and animalistic act… Animals do not discriminate between clean and unclean foods, as long as some food can satisfy its hunger, they will tear it apart. When a human being restrains himself regarding what he eats, he becomes more dignified, restrained, and noble.” Yet even so, these detailed laws “between the unclean and the clean animals” seem to be shrouded in mystery. Indeed, our Sages declared them chukkim, laws beyond our understanding, with which it is proper to

lift up our hands admit that “I have a desire for these foods, but what can I do since my Father in heaven forbids it!” Certainly, these are difficult passages. However, even if we cannot understand the reason for Kosher food, we can at least marvel at what such restrictions have created for us. Some years ago, one Jewish writer, David Goldman, decided to keep Kosher. What he reflected upon afterwards is astounding: “One day my daughter and I agreed that we would consume no more non-kosher meat, and we would separate it from dairy. Some months passed before it dawned on me that I had migrated to the inside of Judaism, rather than pressing my nose against the window and looking in. I did not take the leap of faith across the chasm toward Jewish observance, to be sure: I was pushed by a stern-faced 14-year-old. Still, the world felt different afterward: I ate meat less frequently, and with a sense of awe at the G-d who rules over life and death. First one does, then one understands. Judaism is

The food we Jews eat and what we steer clear of, whether we understand it or not, has this ability to set us apart and to focus ourselves more on serving G-d.

a religion of the body… It impressed upon me that the narrative and the legislative parts of the Bible, the ethical and the ritual, the ineffable mystery of life and death and the rules of the kosher kitchen, all are woven into one seamless fabric. Judaism instead provides a supernatural answer to the mystery: G-d gives us means to sanctify our physical life on earth and therewith the promise of eternal life. As the Torah states, ‘You shall eat before the L-rd.’” It seemed, he continued, that eating Kosher was the single strongest change that brought him closer to Judasim, and drew him closer to a life of meaning than either philosophy or prayer. There is good reason for why Kosher food is one of the most widely known Jewish practices, it permeates our lives. The food we Jews eat and what we steer clear of, whether we understand it or not, has this ability to set us apart and to focus ourselves more on serving G-d. It may be a mystery, but it is a meaningful one at that.

FOOD LAWS – THE MIND & THE MOUTH

A rabbi sometimes has a hard life. People expect so much of him. Actually most rabbis expect a great deal of themselves. The two expectations don’t always coincide. An example has to do with food. The rabbi expects that his congregation will take the kosher laws seriously; the congregation often expects the rabbi to be more concerned with the mind and not the mouth. The Torah solves the problem by expecting both. The mind is obligated to concern itself with ideas and ethics; the mouth is duty-bound to keep itself pure by eating only such foods as are authorised by the A-lmighty. Both themes are central to this week’s sidra. It wants us to think properly about G-d, man, life and the world. It also wants us to live a holy life by avoiding any and every type of forbidden food.

THE TWO OTHER SONS

Aaron had four sons. Rashi tells us that after Nadav and Avihu died, G-d had a message for the remaining sons, Elazar

The rabbi expects that his congregation will take the kosher laws seriously; the congregation often expects the rabbi to be more concerned with the mind and not the mouth. and Itamar (Lev. 11:1). These sons, according to Rav Naftali Zvi Berlin, were told the statement of the Talmud (B’rachot 63b) that whoever takes in silence his teacher’s anger deserves to become a teacher of halachah. The Torah says that when G-d punished Nadav and Avihu, Aaron had been silent (Lev. 10:1-3). Elazar and Itamar were not unaffected by what had befallen their brothers and they actually made a mistake in their halachic reasoning on an aspect of the laws of the sacrifices (Lev. 10: 12-20). Aaron understood their feelings and explained the situation to Moses. So Elazar and Itamar had a lesson in how to react to a situation. From Aaron they should have learnt silence in the face of tragedy. Eventually they did learn their lesson and we admire them for it, but we admire Aaron even

more for the example he set his sons.

SOULS & SYNAGOGUES

The opening sections of Vayikra tell us the next stage – using the Tabernacle for sacrifices and services. Two questions: Can’t we have sacrifices without a sanctuary? Can’t we have a sanctuary without sacrifices? Sacrifices without a sanctuary are certainly possible, at least in theory. But the Torah frowns on the idea, and for many generations after the people entered Israel there were constant warnings about building altars all over the place. Chief Rabbi JH Hertz said at the time of the Balfour Declaration that a people can live without a land, but a land focuses its people. The same can be said about the sanctuary. Sacrifices can happen without a

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

sanctuary, but the sanctuary focuses the sacrifices. You can pray anywhere, but praying in the synagogue has its advantage: the building enhances the thoughts and emotions of prayer. Can we have a sanctuary without sacrifices? Technically yes, but what’s the point of a empty shell without activity? Travel the world today and you see the remnants of old synagogues which now have no community, no services, no purpose except as museums and mausoleums. Those buildings were mostly the victims of a rapacious enemy: we have to make sure that in places where there are synagogues and human beings, there is a connect between them. Jews who bypass their synagogues are doing very little for their posterity, and very little for their own souls. Rabbi Raymond Apple was for many years Australia’s highest profile rabbi and the leading spokesman on Judaism. After serving congregations in London, Rabbi Apple was chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, for 32 years. He also held many public roles, particularly in the fields of chaplaincy, interfaith dialogue and Freemasonry, and is the recipient of several national and civic honours. Now retired, he lives in Jerusalem and blogs at http://www.oztorah.com

Dear Stephen I am reading of massive delays at the ports. How does this affect a possible Aliyah shipment to Israel? Rebecca Dear Rebecca There are indeed delays at the ports and, in general, these have been caused by the shipping lines reducing capacity by placing vessels in dry dock etc. A shortage of capacity has allowed the lines to increase rates in view of the increased demand for the available space. Joe Biden exposed this in his State of the Union address to the US people recently. But it will take time for prices to come down. For Israel, we have only used ZIM as our preferred carrier for the last 20+ years and did enjoy favourable rates that we passed on to our clients. In recent months, they have repeatedly increased rates and so we have been forced to approach other lines. Fortunately, as the largest shipper of household and personal effects from the UK to Israel, we are able to obtain containers and space on vessels reasonably quickly and there are signs that the overall situation may well improve by the end of Pesach this year. Sea freight rates should begin to drop eventually and, when they do, we will immediately pass on those savings to our clients. The bottom line is – speak to me as soon as you know your plans for making Aliyah and I will make things run as smoothly as possible from then onwards and ensure that your shipment arrives at your new home so that you can start your new life with one less worry! Shemini All of Bnei Yisroel are waiting outside in the courtyard of the Mishkan when we last saw them. Suddenly, they hear that Hashem’s Fire will descend onto the Mishkan and consume the special Korbanot that Aharon and his sons will offer to Hashem.Hashem has forgiven them for the sin of the Eigel (Golden Calf)!! Aharon blesses the Bnei Yisroel with the Birchat Kohanim (priestly blessings) for the first time ever . When the Bnei Yisroel witness this great miracle they all break into prayer. Now Aharon’s two sons, Nadav and Avihu, decide to bring an incense offering. Oops. First of all, they do this without asking Moshe or Aharon if Hashem’s even interested. Second, they went into the kodesh kedoshim, the holy of holies and even the kohen gadol is only allowed there once a year! so Hahsem has to kill them. After this, Hashem tells Moshe, Kla Yisrael want to be holy? I’ll show you how. Eat Kosher for starters, the rest comes later. Split hooves and chewing cud? Eat it. Otherwise, nope. Milk and meat are not a pairing you’ll see in a Jewish home. Fish have to have fins and scales. There is a list of birds you can eat and no insects – except for 16 species of grasshoppers (but chill, only Sephardim remember even some of those species). And that’s all for now folks.

hat is this week’s sedra?” Abba asked Rivki. “Shemini!” she replied happily. It was Shabbos lunch and Abba was going round the table asking all the children questions on the parsha, while Ima served the main course. “What did Aaron say when his sons died?” “He said nothing,” said Hadassa. “Very good,” said Abba and turning to Rivki, he continued, “and what were Aaron’s sons called?” “They were called Nadav and Avihu,” Rivki replied. “Excellent,” said Abba, smiling. “I have a question, Abba,” said Chaim. “I don’t understand how Aaron could be silent after his sons had died. Last week we lost the Gadol Hador Rav Chaim Kanievsky. Thousands of people attended his levaya, crying and davening. People who weren’t even related and many who didn’t even know him. How could Aaron not do the same for his sons?” “That is a great question” said Abba leaning back in his chair thoughtfully. “One idea is that the deaths of Nadav and Avihu were so sudden and they were a great shock to Aaron, coming just as they had first started doing the avodah in the Mishkan. Most people when they are in shock cannot speak, because they

Ima served out the kugel as Abba continued, “Another idea is that actually the silence indicated Aaron accepting what had happened to his sons. When things go wrong for us, do we scream at Hashem and say why did this happen to us? Or do we accept that this is what Hashem wants and that is He trying to teach us something. I think the takeaway from this week is what are we going to learn from the loss of Rav Chaim Kanievsky ztz’l? What can we take on to bring some more Torah and holiness into the world to try and replace what we have lost by his passing away?” “Wow,” said Chaim, “I never thought of it like that.” “I am still in shock now,” said Ima, “but I would definitely like to take on something extra l’ilui nishmas Rav Chaim Kanievski ztz’l. I think I will try to concentrate more on my brochos and benching.” “Me too!” said Rivki. “I am going to bench really nicely every day.” “I am going to try and help around the house more,” said Hadassa. Chaim was thinking carefully. “I’d like to learn a bit more. Abba, would you be able to do some extra learning with me on Shabbos?” “Of course,” said Abba. “What a good idea.” “I am so proud of all of you,” said Ima. “B’ezras Hashem, all your extra mitzvos will bring the geulah as soon as possible.” “Amen!” shouted everyone.
