Israel is on the highest state of alert from terrorism after three terror attacks in a week. Eleven citizens have been killed including five in Bnei Brak on Tuesday and two border police officers in Hadera last Sunday. Thousands of mourners attended funerals. Seven Israelis were murdered in Be’er Sheva last week. There have been 10 terror attacks this month. The killing spree has rocked the nation and comes after Bennett visited Egypt last week and Israel held the Negev Summit in recent days. Israel had planned easing restrictions for freedom of prayer in Jerusalem, including for West Bank Palestinians. Earlier this week Israel increased permits for Gazans to work in Israel. The security cabinet is analysing whether terrorists will look to strike. Tensions have surged and there is growing concern with Ramadan and Pesach next month. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Israel was facing a “wave of murderous Arab terrorism” after the latest atrocity. “My heart is with the families who have lost their loved ones,” he said. “I am praying for the recovery of the wounded.” Israel’s leader vowed to fight back. “The security forces are at Continued on page 2

work,” Bennett said. “We will fight terrorism with persistence, diligence and an iron fist. They will not move us from here. We will prevail.” He added, “Every few years the State of Israel deals with a wave of terrorism. After a period of quiet, there is a violent eruption by those who want to destroy us, those who want to hurt us at any price. They are prepared to die, so that we will not live in peace. “We are currently dealing with a new wave of terrorism. What we witnessed less than a year ago in Operation Guardians of the Walls, the terrorism and the violence, from within Israel and inside Israel, was the first sign. This is a great and complex challenge for the IDF, the ISA and the Israel Police that requires the security establishment to be creative and for us to adapt ourselves to the new threat and read the tell-tale signs of lone individuals, sometimes without organisational affiliation, and to be in control on the ground in order to thwart terrorism even before it happens.” Bennett said that the civilians and police officers who shot the terrorists were heroes of Israel who had saved lives. “We face a challenging period,” he continued. “We have experience in dealing with terrorism from the very beginning of Zionism. They did not break us then and they will not break us now.” Bennett, who has Covid-19, has met with Defence Minister Benny Gantz, Interior Minister Omer Bar-Lev, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi, Police Commissioner Kobi Shatbai and Shin Bet head Ronen Bar to discuss measures to prevent a terror wave escalating. Gantz commented, “We have been through difficult periods, as a people and a country, in the face of waves of terrorism and we have always prevailed with resoluteness and strength, and that will be the cast this time too. The entire security establishment the IDF, the Shin Bet and the police, will act with all means to restore security to the streets of Israel and the sense of security to the citizens.” Shabtai said forces would be deployed in city centres and major urban areas. The IDF has been bolstered along the West said Kochavi. Coalition partners condemned the attack including United Arab List Party leader Mansour Abbas who called it a “foul attack against innocent people”. Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas also condemned the attack. But the local leader of the Fatah Party in Jenin said the killer was a “heroic

31 MARCH 2022 martyr”. Diaa Hamarsheh, a resident of Ya’bad near Jenin in the West Bank, was responsible for the attack in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnai Brak. Israeli forces raided the killer’s home town of Hamarsheh on Wednesday. Hamarsheh illegally lived and worked in Israel. He was previously imprisoned for security offences and released in 2015. The 26-year old terrorist was armed with an M-16 rifle when he killed police officer Amir Khoury, a 32-year old resident of Nazareth and Arab citizen. Khouri’s partner shot dead the assailant at the scene. Khouri is survived by parents and three siblings. It has been reported that adaptations to the gun resulted in lives being saved. Yaakov Shalom, a 36-year old from Bnei Brak and father of five, was murdered while driving his car. Rabbi Avishai Yhezkel, 29, was a teacher walking with his two-year-old son outside his home. His wife is expecting the couple’s second child. Both victims were buried in Bnei Brak. Residents joined political leaders at the funeral of Rabbi Yehezkel, who was protecting his two-year-old son when he died. His wife is pregnant with their second child. Rabbi Menashe Yehezkel, Avishai’s father, said his son was concerned for his elder brother and called to warn him of gunfire. “His bravery was in his character,” he reportedly said. Shas Party leader Arye Deri gave a eulogy. “You are pure and sacred,” he said. “How can parents be consoled for the death of their son?” he asked. Deri said Yehezkel’s death must not be in vain and leaders must stop the terror wave. Bnei Brak Mayor Avraham Rubinstein said Yehezkel was respectful of his parents and family. Two victims unnamed are Ukrainian nationals working in Israel. Shin Bet security forces arrested 12 people linked to Islamic State in Arab towns in northern Israel in the wake of the deadly Hadera attack where border police officers Yezen Falah and Shirel Abukarat, both 19, had served in the West Bank unit. The officers reportedly died when the terrorists opened fire at a group of people getting off a bus. Special forces at a nearby restaurant prevented a massacre when they shot dead the terrorists. Gantz said the military and security forces were on high alert following the attack. “We will act vigorously against terrorism and the terrorists, and we will advance the continued reinforcement of the forces on the ground,” he noted. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid was in Sde Boker at the Negev Summit, he said, “The visiting foreign ministers condemned the attack and asked to send their condolences to the families of the victims and wishes for the recovery of the wounded.” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, added, “We condemn today’s terrorist attack in Hadera, Israel. Such senseless acts of violence and murder have no place in society. We stand with our Israeli partners and send our condolences to the families of the victims.” President Isaac Herzog said, “The heart breaks from the horrible price that the victims and families had to pay when their entire worlds were came crashing by vile murderers. Border Police Assistant Commissioner Yitzhak Brik told mourners that Abukarat graduated with honours and had recently completed commander’s training. “Her sole desire was to enlist in a fighting corps to protect Israel and its people,” he said. “Shirel fell in a heroic death and gave her life for Israel’s security.” Falah, of Druze village of Kisra-Sumei, joined the Border Police last year. Kotel Pesach preparations Preparations have begun at the Kotel for Peasch next month. With thousands of worshippers expected at the Kotel Plaza a thorough inspection of the Kotel stones has taken place. The Western Wall Heritage Foundation conducts a comprehensive manual inspection of the stones twice a year before Passover and Rosh Hashana. They also do maintenance of the stones to safeguard the worshippers who come to the sacred site around the year and especially on religious holidays. The extensive inspection examined the stability of the Kotel stones and included the area of the covered Wilson’s Arch. The inspection team, led by engineers, dutifully covered stone by stone, using a crane, and examined the stability and level of maintenance as part of ongoing tracking that is updated from one examination to the next. The methodology is done under halachic supervision of the Rabbi of the Western Wall, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, and in collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority and engineers of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, in accordance with determined halachic restrictions. As in past years, the foundation is preparing to host visitors making a pilgrimage on the intermediate days of Passover and especially for the traditional priestly blessing Birkat Kohanim. Due to security and in light of recent terror attacks further details will be announced closer to the Pesach regarding access to the Kotel.

Herzog follows Gantz to Jordan BY LILLY JOSEPH
President Isaac Herzog met King Abdullah II at Al Husseiniya Palace in Jordan yesterday. Herzog and King Abdullah held a diplomatic meeting with delegations. Jordan’s King condemned recent terror attacks in Israel and expressed condolences to victims’ families. Herzog said, “We have suffered heinous terror attacks in the last ten days. Eleven innocent lives were taken in terrible attacks by vile terrorists. We must fight together against any type of terror and cooperate for the benefit of the security of our nations.” He added, “We share common values of prosperity and peace, based on our peace agreement, which was carved out by the late King Hussein and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Together, we must now move forward and we are offering an alternative. As against the horrible scenes of yesterday, we offer a different alternative of people-to-people dialogue, of respect, of speaking to each other, of showing the region that there could be a different way. “We move forward with partnerships, with dialogue, towards peace and prosperity for the benefit of all peoples of the region, including our nations and including our Palestinian neighbours.” The visit followed Defence Minister Benny Gantz meeting King Abdullah where the leaders spoke about regional and security challenges.

CAA to appeal “lenient” antisemitic sentence BY ADAM MOSES
Campaign Against Antisemitism are appealing a “lenient” 18-month prison sentence handed to Nicholas Nelson at Southwark Crown Court to the Attorney General’s Office Court. Nelson’s sentence, suspended for two years, was the culmination of a first-ofits-kind litigation by CAA who noted that instead of going to prison, the 32-year-old from Cambridgeshire will undertake 30 days rehabilitation activity and 220 hours of unpaid community service. Nelson must pay a victim surcharge and is subject to a restraining order. The Attorney General has the power to refer sentences for certain offences to the Court of Appeal. Nelson pleaded guilty at Peterborough Crown Court in January to racially aggravated harassment after sending abusive antisemitic e-mails and messages to Oscar-nominated Jewish writer Lee Kern and hateful messages to communications strategist Joanne Bell. Nelson also harassed a staff member at the Board of Deputies with antisemitic calls in 2020. Nelson was charged under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and with sending an electronic communication with intent to cause distress or anxiety under the Malicious Communications Act 1988. The offences carry a maximum sentence of six months in prison and a fine.
The case followed a first-of-its-kind litigation by CAA. Kern contacted CAA, which funded a case led by lawyer and Honorary CAA patron Mark Lewis. Judge Charles Gratwicke said the defendant was “not the person you were two or three years ago”. However, he accepted those sitting here in the courtroom could feel nothing but “revulsion, sickness and downright anger” at the type of hate” engaged in. Stephen Silverman, CAA Director of Investigations and Enforcement, described the sentence as “deeply disappointing”. He commented, “Mr Nelson has, for years, obsessively harassed Jews and sent them violent and obscene messages day after day. Instead of sending him to prison where he belongs, Judge Gratwicke has spared a man who deserves no leniency. We are now referring this absurd sentence to the Attorney General’s Office.” Silverman added, “Though the sentence has been regrettable, the fact that Mr Nelson was convicted proves the efficacy of our new legal device to unmask internet trolls who hide behind anonymous e-mail addresses in order to abuse Jewish victims. This game-changing approach is the most significant development in the legal fight against online hate in years. We have been grateful for the cooperation of the police and prosecutors. We will continue to devise innovative legal mechanisms to protect the Jewish community and deliver justice to victims of antisemitism, including in ways
previously thought impossible.” Kern said, “I have noted the immediacy with which custodial sentences have been handed out for first time offenders who have engaged in other forms of racism. Yet here we have a repeat offender who has embarked upon an unparalleled campaign of hatred against Jews and has been spared prison again and again. Why are antisemitic hate crimes not deemed as criminal as those of other forms of racism? What exactly does it take for a person found guilty of repeated racially motivated crimes against Jews to actually go to prison? This is a disgrace and an embarrassment and sends a clear signal to Britain’s Jews that when it comes to receiving justice, they don’t count.” Abusive communications came from accounts Nelson had worked hard to make anonymous. But the new legal initiative by CAA and counsel identified Nelson for criminal proceedings to commence. Kern said Nelson was a “malevolent racist” motivated by his love of Jeremy Corbyn and had engaged in an antisemitic campaign of harassment against him for a number of years. Nelson had pleaded guilty to the same charge in 2018 after sending abusive messages to Labour MPs. The court gave Nelson a 20-week suspended sentence for 122 months and ordered him to complete 160 hours unpaid work. New offences were committed during the period of the suspended sentence.

Negev Summit is historic success BY DAVID SAFFER
The Negev Summit in Sde Boker has been hailed a historic success. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid hosted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken along with the Foreign Ministries of United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Egypt last Sunday and Monday. Lapid and Blinken met with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Bahrain’s Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani, Morocco’s Nasser Bourita and Egypt’s Sameh Shoukry. The summit took place against the backdrop of the Hadera terror attack. Top officials gathered in the midst of ongoing discussions regarding the nuclear deal with Iran and the US potentially removing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps from its list of terror organisations. Israel and regional partners oppose an IRGC move. Lapid announced that the summit would become an annual event after the foreign ministers condemned the Hadera atrocity. “We are today opening a door before all the peoples of the region, including the Palestinians, and offering them to replace
the path of terror and destruction with a shared future of progress and success,” he reportedly said. “What we are doing here is making history, building a new regional architecture based on progress, technology, religious tolerance, security and intelligence cooperation. “This new architecture, the shared capabilities we are building, intimidates and deters our common enemies, first and foremost Iran and its proxies.” UAE’s bin Zayed said the region had lost 43 years since Israel and Egypt signed a peace deal between whilst al-Zayani called on attacks by Hezbollah and Islamic State to end. He added that Bahrain would search for ways for Israel and the Palestinians to negotiate peace. Bourita noted that relations between Morocco and Israel was a “natural occurrence” and his country believed in peace. Shoukry vowed to “confront extremism and terrorism” for the stability of the region. Blinken, at the start of a three-nation Middle East and North Africa tour, attempted to reassure participants about the Iran nuclear deal and aimed to build support for Ukraine. Blinken met Prime Minister Naftali
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
Bennett in Jerusalem before traveling to the summit. The leaders discussed a range of topics including Israeli efforts to mediate between Ukraine and Russia. They spoke about the Middle East, strengthening of the Abraham Accords and Iranian aggression in the region. “The Middle East is changing for the better,” noted Bennett. “We’re cultivating old ties and building new bridges. We’re rejuvenating old peace and charging it with the
new energy of the Abraham Accords. We’re working together to overcome the old forces of darkness and build a new future. “In a turbulent world, Israel is a force for peace, prosperity, stability and for doing good. Unfortunately, there are other forces in the region that are still violent and destructive. We’re concerned about the intention to delist the IRGC. Their proxy, the Houthis, just this weekend carried out a horrific attack on Saudi Arabia. I hope the United States will hear the concerned voices

Israel has approved 20,000 workers from Gaza to work in Israel and is investing NIS 40m in improving crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip. “While we can’t solve everything, we can improve the lives of people on ground and thanks to your help, this is happening,” he said. Regarding the war in Ukraine, Israel

backed the people of Ukraine and will continue to help reduce the bloodshed. “We’ve already sent our top medical teams to set up the most advanced field hospital inside Ukraine, on the western side,” he explained. “They’ve already taken care and treated over 500 patients. Doctors and nurses are risking their lives to save lives of those in need. We do this while maintaining close coordination with the US and with our European partners.” Bennett added that the alliance between the US and Israel was “unbreakable”. Blinken stated, “We’re grateful for the Israeli government’s efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This support is crucial as more and more Ukrainian men, women and child are being killed, maimed, displaced by Moscow’s attacks.” Regarding Middle East peace, he noted, “Israelis and Palestinians deserve to enjoy equal measures of freedom, security,
opportunity and dignity. And that’s one of the principle reasons we support a negotiated two-state solution. The Prime Minister and his government have made important efforts to address some of the challenges facing Palestinians.” Blinken said the US was working to prevent actions on all sides that could raise tensions. Regarding progress of the Abraham Accords and summit he was due to attend, he noted, “The US will continue, not only to support the work of those who have already normalised relations, but also to urge more governments to take this important step to the benefit of the people in their countries and far beyond.” Blinken welcomed the recent trilateral summit of Bennett with President El-Sisi and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed together with President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Turkey with President Tayyip Erdogan. “I applaud Israel’s leadership, its engagement, its diplomacy in building these agreements and making them real,” he said. Blinken thanked Bennett for strengthening an enduring friendship between Israel and the US. Defence Minister Benny Gantz welcomed US actions regarding the Iron Dome defence system. He commented, “Your visit during these challenging times shows the great bond between our two countries, which is not just declarative but also in actual deeds.” Blinken reconfirmed the US commitment to Israel’s security. “Our cooperation and coordination across so many of the major challenges that we face is as good as it’s ever

Herzog held a diplomatic meeting with Blinken. “We will work together to find further regional cooperation for the benefit of all peoples in the region and for the benefit of peace, and of course preventing any threats against Israel,” he said. Blinken commented, “When we head to the Negev, what is happening there is something that I think would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. What we’re seeing is normalisation becoming the new normal for this region. I think it’s going to attract more and more countries as they see the benefits of these partnerships among so many of the leading countries of the region.” He added, “It’s an incredibly powerful and positive vision for the future and Israel is making that real. Bennett spoke about the Negev Summit at his weekly cabinet meeting. He said, “We are cultivating old ties and building new bridges. The Arab world understands more and more that Israel has always been on the side of peace and cooperation.” Bennett added that the government was approving the establishment of five new communities in the Negev. “This is important news for all residents of the area and is part of the process of organising this part of the country, which has been neglected for so many years,” he said. “Our highest obligation is to provide personal security for the residents of the south, we have started on this journey and we will not stop. At the same time, we are continuing to settle and develop the Negev.”

Luxembourg Holocaust centre
A Holocaust remembrance centre opens in Luxembourg in May. The government agreed a restitution agreement with the Jewish Consistory of Luxembourg, the country’s European Jewish Congress affiliate. The centre at Cinqfontaines Abbey, Troisvierges was used as a deportation site during World War Two. “Remembrance does not only mean remembering the past, but also showing respect to those who have lived through this painful history,” said Education Minister Claude Meisch. “Remembrance also means analysing the past with a certain critical thought, to prevent today any resurgence of hatred and any incitement to hatred. In this context, the Cinqfontaines centre will accomplish a double mission, both commemorative and educational.” The centre will welcome refugees from Ukraine. “This will impact the activities of the centre, but this act of humanism illustrates the very values that the centre intends to defend and transmit”, a statement reportedly noted. Pilot projects launch in a few weeks the government said in a press release. A wider programme will be offered next academic year including workshops against hate speech. The Luxembourg Centre for Political Wducation (ZpB) and national youth service (SNJ) are helping develop activities for schools and general public. The site will offer information about the role it played during the Holocaust.

Ukraine Holocaust survivors arrived in Frankfurt BY ADAM MOSES
Holocaust survivors from Ukraine have arrived in Frankfurt in recent days. According to the Claims Conference, four survivors were the first to arrive. Another 14 survivors were brought to Wurzburg and Munich. Many needed to be transported by ambulance. The Cologne Synagogue community announced that Ninel Denisenko had arrived safely on Sunday after a 30-hour flight from Kiev. The 90-year-old was accompanied by her daughter. Both will continue to their granddaughter in Israel. According to Claims Conference the survivors left everything behind for fear of danger and “to feel safe”. Claims Conference representative in Germany, Rudiger Mahlo, set up a network for the rescue operation that included the Central Welfare Office of Jews in Germany and German Foreign Affairs Ministry. According to a statement, transports were organised in conjunction with the Joint Distribution Committee with Chesed who look after Holocaust survivors in Ukraine. ZWST Director Aron Schuster secured a place for all survivors in Jewish care institutions. This was “a huge effort” that could only be accomplished together, Mahlo said. He thanked local diplomatic missions
Ukrainian Jewish refugees
and announced further transports would follow. “The evacuations are the prelude to a larger action in which all those Holocaust survivors who are in need of the most severe care and are ready to leave their homes are to be brought to Germany,” Mahlo noted. Federal Family Minister Anne Spiegel told the Bundestag that special attention would be paid to the Holocaust survivors. “I want them all to have a safe haven in Germany,” she said. “That is our responsibility. More than that is our humanitarian obligation.”

Jewish refugees take shelter in Germany
Some 3,500 Jewish refugees fleeing Ukraine have arrived in Germany according to the Berlin Jewish community. Many are being looked after by the community. The Commissioner of the German Federal government for combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, Felix Klein, visited the Jewish Masorti Primary School in Berlin to find out about the situation. Klein addressed a group of Ukrainian refugees, host families, helpers and teachers. Nine Ukrainian children have started attending the school. Around 50 Jewish Ukrainian refugees have been accommodated in families. German courses for adults are being offered. Klein praised the Jewish community. He said, “The Jewish communities in Germany were also heavily involved in the aid measures from the very beginning, among other things, through family and language connections in Ukraine, they were able to quickly assess the needs and organise help quickly and unbureaucratically as we can also see here in the Masorti School. The commitment is exemplary.” During his visit, Klein noted Germany’s responsibility for Jewish refugees. “What is important now is that we offer a safe haven to people, some of whom have experienced terrible suffering,” he said. “To all those who have fled violence and war in
Ukraine, I say very clearly, you are welcome in Germany. “Their safety is a top priority for the Federal Government. I am glad that the government, in consultation with the Jewish associations, organised a special procedure for Jewish immigration from Ukraine very quickly after the Russian invasion.” The German Federal government has facilitated the immigration of Jewish refugees. And the German Ministry of the Interior issued an order for simplified immigration rules for Ukrainian Jews. The decree makes it possible for new applications to be processed directly in Germany.

US Chesed beats £500,000 target
US Chesed volunteers
Thousands of people who are struggling, vulnerable or lonely will receive support this Pesach thanks to the United Synagogue’s successful fundraising campaign this week. US Chesed (Welfare) Department and the charity’s synagogue teams help over 4,000 people in need every year. A matched-giving campaign reached the £500,000 target with just over two hours to go. Some 138 ‘Chesed Champions’ reached out for support and 2,766 donors contributed towards the campaign. To date £521,000 has been raised and donations are still welcome. US Chesed has seen a dramatic rise in the number of Jewish families asking for support to make ends meet with the double blow of lost income during the pandemic and rising cost of living.
Pesach food parcels will contain over 20 different items. US Chesed provides essential food parcels or cooked meals to over 120 families a week, calls or visiting elderly people living alone, help with shopping, bereavement befriending, organising meal rotas or being a friend every day of the year. Michelle Minsky, US Head of Chesed, said, “The current cost-of-living crisis and the effects of Covid mean that even more US families need extra financial, practical and emotional help.” The charity is bracing itself for greater demand after Pesach when the energy price cap is removed and fuels costs are expected to rise by more than 50%. The US is also expecting to play its part in helping Ukrainian refugees through the charity’s existing asylum seeker centres.

Green heads Maccabi Team GB Maccabi GB have announced that Brian Green has been appointed as the Head of Delegation for Team GB at this summer’s Maccabiah Games in Israel. Assuming the position in an honorary role, Brian has been involved with Maccabi since 1979 when he managed the U14 boys and girls football teams in Glasgow and first became involved with MGB in 2007 when he managed the Junior GB Squad at the European Maccabi Games in Rome. “This is the ultimate honour,” he said. “I didn’t think it was possible to better the emotion I had when asked to carry the flag into the opening ceremony at the last Games in 2017, but the recognition by the Maccabi GB hierarchy and this appointment has even surpassed those feelings. “I can’t wait to lead out the 500 strong GB delegation with my great friend and general team manager Joel Nathan.” This will be the 15th international tournament Brian has been involved with in a managerial capacity, having overseen Maccabi GB
teams at three Maccabiah’s, four European Games, six JCC Maccabi Games and a Pan American Games. Nathan commented, “Brian appointed myself in my first MGB managerial role in 2007 and has been by my side ever since, I couldn’t be prouder to walk out with him at the Teddy Stadium in my final MGB general team manager role. He brings a wealth of experience and is a great sounding board not only for me but also the rest of my management team, which will be invaluable when we are in Israel.” Maccabi GB Chairman Jonathan Prevezer added, “Brian was the obvious choice. His commitment and dedication to Maccabi has been second to none. He has been involved with so many different aspects of our work over the last 20 years that appointing him as the Head of Delegation was an extremely easy decision. I’m so pleased that he’s accepted the appointment and I am sure he will carry out the role as he has always done, with respect, professionalism and complete dedication.”

Passover ‘Matzah and Wine’ initiative BY LILLY JOSEPH
Over 50,000 parcels of matzah and wine will be distributed all over the world to Jewish communities in 30 countries on behalf of a Jewish donor from Australia. The Wardiger family from Melbourne, Australia has promoted the ‘Matzah and Wine’ initiative for Passover that includes items for 110 different communities to celebrate the festival. The parcels will be distributed including Tanzania, Rwanda, Namibia, China, Japan, Nicaragua, Laos and Ethiopia. Deliveries will be distributed in cooperation with the Jewish Agency, Chabad and Rabbi Daniel Winderbaum. World Zionist Organisation’s Yaakov Hagoel, thanked the Wardiger family for
their donation following two challenging years. “Jews and Israelis abroad will celebrate Passover seder and I appreciate everyone who took part in the operation of the transport and distribution of the matzah parcels and wine bottles,” he said. The initiative helps Jewish communities that don’t have access to kosher ingredients in general and kosher matzah and wine in particular. Chabad emissary in Namibia, Rabbi Koptsik, said, “This year we are expected to celebrate Passover with 100 people who include Jewish and Israelis backpackers. Together we unite around the seder table. We work around the clock to be ready for the seder evening.” Head of the Chabad emissaries in Central
America, Rabbi Kaflin added, “After two years without any backpackers, we are excited about the return of the Israelis to Central America and we expect to host about 5,600 Israelis on the Seder night. As a Chabad emissary for over 13 years, it’s a real pleasure for me to host Israeli backpackers and Jewish families who came from different places and decided to read the Haggadah, sing the traditional songs and celebrate together in Passover Eve”. The Wardiger family said in a statement, “It’s our ‘mitzvah’ to contribute and help Jewish communities around the world celebrate the seder. Jewish communities abroad and the State of Israel are always in our hearts. We are happy to contribute and promote the ‘Matzah and Wine’ initiative every year.”

Young Norwood attend carbon Dead Sea photo auction neutral Property Awards
Young Norwood Property Committee BY LILLY JOSEPH
The Young Norwood Property Awards offered a path to “meaningful climate action” at The Londoner Hotel on Monday. The first carbon neutral event attracted over 400 future leaders. Norwood worked with ClimatePartner to bring climate action into proceedings with hydro power, wind energy, reduced printed materials and a vegetarian meal. ClimatePartner advisor Tom Sadan praised Norwood for “taking ownership” and “encouraging others to follow suit”. Sadan spoke of the “everyday social impact” Norwood provides people it supports. He also warned attendees there was under eight years of the carbon budget. “The time for climate action is now,” he said. The evening’s awards paid tribute to companies with a sustainable ethos in projects through renewable energy or high-quality insulation. Fabrix London scooped the inaugural Sustainable Property Company of the Year Award. Other awards included Commercial Agent of the Year won by Jenna Harris of Harris
Associates, Residential Agent of the Year won by Yazmin Murat of Knight Frank and PropTech Company of the Year won by District Technologies. David Ereira, Norwood Honorary Life President and founder of Ereira Mendoza, introduced the evening’s fundraising appeal. Ereira paid tribute to Young Norwood’s work in allowing a young generation to take their “rightful places” setting a “positive example of leadership” for communities”. This ensured essential charities like Norwood have a “bright future” to support people. Auctioneer Jonny Gould participated before a networking reception. Derwent London and General Projects were lead event sponsors. Norwood has committed to an annual property lunch this year, a first sustainable Challenge event in September and Bike Slovenia Green cycling route. Challenges and events are an important part of Norwood’s fundraising activities to secure £12m voluntary contributions to support life-changing care and support that costs £32 million each year.
The Dead Sea Museum in Arad has launched its first NFT collection of photographs by Noam Bedein on Open Sea. The auction ends on Earth Day (April 22). Proceeds are for the museum’s planning and legislative efforts to restore water to the Dead Sea. The collection of 100 selected images highlight the disappearing beauty of the historic Dead Sea to raise environmental awareness for the World Wonder in the Metaverse. Environmental-art activist Noam Bedein, founder of the Dead Sea Revival Project, has documented the Dead Sea World Heritage Site by boat over six years and has a database of over 25,000 photographs including the hidden layers at the lowest point on Earth. The sea level is the lowest level in recorded history. “We need to find creative ways to make an environmental impact for the Dead Sea by using everything new and advanced in the world,” said Bedein. “By providing ownership of a vanishing Dead Sea time capsule I hope to harness the responsibility of others to share and contribute to a practical positive environmental impact.

At a time of war, peace initiatives must not be hampered OPINION PIECE BY ANDREW M ROSEMARINE
Scapegoating Roman Abramovich is common in the UK Government and UK media now. This is hypocritical, unprincipled, and against British, Ukranian and the Russian People’s interests. At a time of war, peace initiatives must not be hindered. Abramovich says he is trying to intervene. He should be helped, not hampered. I opened and ran the Moscow branch of what is now one of the world’s largest law firms in the 1990s (Eversheds), and have followed his career closely (though I have never met him or worked for him.) Allegations of kleptocracy and of purchasing influence must always be considered with all due seriousness. But Abramovich appears to be among the best of the oligarchs, and an inappropriate primary target for scapegoating, even if he has done bad things. English law rightly prides itself on the principle of “innocent, until proven guilty,” and that should apply to all. Abramovich is the most charitable of
the oligarchs (according to Bloomberg in 2013), and has donated over $4 billion to Russian, UK, Israeli and Jewish charities, (according to tribuna.com). He was praised in our High Court for his transparency about his own role in the corrupt Russian economy during Yeltsin’s reign (when Western firms exploited Russia too, and made little serious attempt to help democratization.) In Russia, his previous governorate thrived through his assistance. In the UK, he helped finance free meals for 78,000 vulnerable and sick during covid, and helped Israeli Palestinian peace initiatives through sport. The UK is sadly awash with money taken by corrupt and violent individuals and regimes, from which UK political parties and politicians continue to benefit. Many
TERROR ATTACKS POST REB CHAIM
Last week I wrote about the death of Reb Chaim Kanievsky and the tangible loss for world Jewry. Within a few days of his passing there has been several terror attacks with 11 people tragically killed in Israel. I have heard people say previously why do some rabbis bother to sit and learn Torah all day? I explain to them that Torah achieves many things spiritually that you may not be able to see physically. In the same way that physical actions have an effect so do spiritual ones. Physically if a person goes to the gym, the muscles will be more developed. Spiritually if Torah is learnt, it provides physical protection. It is clear to see. When Saddam Hussein fired scud missiles into Eretz Yisroel, Jews were running to the bomb shelters. Once when the sirens went off, Rebbetzen Batsheva Kanievstky urged her husband to run to the bomb shelters. Harav Chaim calmly told her that no missiles would fall upon Bnei Berak as there was too much holiness in the city due to all the Torah

learned. Indeed, this was the case, and not a single rocket fell upon the city. Just how many Jews and other people were saved by the 18 hours per day of hardcore Torah study that Reb Chaim learned we will never know however, what is sadly clear to see if that the protection of his non stop Torah learning has now gone. I remember a few months ago in Daf Hayomi, in tractate Moed Katan we learned that the footsteps of a person will take him where he or she needs to go to die. We saw that tragically this week. Rabbi Avishai Yhezkel, 29, was a teacher who was out walking his two-year-old son in his pushchair to try and get him to sleep. He was on the phone to his brother when he said he could hear shooting and warned him to stay indoors. He died a hero, bent over his baby’s pushchair to save his son’s life.
36-year-old Yaakov Shalom, the son of a prominent Syrian Rabbi in Bnei Berak was simply driving his car when it was shot and he was then shot at point blank, slaughtered in his own vehicle, leaving behind 5 children to his grieving wife. Shirel Abukarat, a French Jew from Netanya, joined the IDF six months ago. She had made Aliyah in 2006 after her family were scared of Muslim extremists in France, yet she was shot dead getting off a bus in Hadera. However, hard as it is we must take a deep look at those who were saved. There is footage online of the terrorist trying to shoot other people point blank, but his gun malfunctioned allowing them to run off or cycle away. Special forces ‘happened’ to be eating in a restaurant near the scene and were able to kill both terrorists who had over 1100 bullets on them, many knives and had planned a mass hostage taking. As my former high school Rebbi, Rabbi Tomlin said, to our class trip at the gates of Auschwitz; “we must remember that even though it looks like complete chaos,

businessmen worldwide, and in the UK, have grown fat through improper conduct, and have found ways of escaping justice. But there is no concrete evidence in the public domain, or known to me, either of any support by Abramovich for Putin since his occupation of the Crimea, nor of any violence ever perpetrated by this oligarch. Indeed Abramovich, in character, pledged to give the proceeds of the Chelsea sale to victims of the Ukraine war. Apart from his name being poisoned in the UK, he appears now to have been actually poisoned for helping Peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Rashi tells us individuals are judged by how they compare to others in their society. Indeed Parashat Noach describes Noah as “ a righteous man for his generation.” Abramovich is better than many in business and politics internationally, and he deserves a more balanced media coverage. Now, when he is trying to stop the War in Ukraine, it is against all our interests for him to be victimized. Andrew M Rosemarine is an international commentator and lawyer, and runs a commercial law office. everybody who died, only died at the exact time that they were supposed to, not one millisecond before. Additionally, all the people who were supposed to survive, did so.” Let us take comfort that G-d above controls the world and let’s pray to Hashem to help us and to help all of Israel and world Jewry from this wave of murderous Arab terror.

Paperweight Perspective
How we’ve adapted to Covid-19 BY LEONIE LEWIS MBE, TRUSTEE PAPERWEIGHT TRUST
Charities have been at the sharp end of the Covid-19 crisis. From NHS charities working hard to support burnt-out hospital workers, to domestic abuse hotlines experiencing spikes in call rates, to food banks supporting millions of families through the worst recession on record. And they have been doing all this while shifting face-to-face support services online, with little to no preparation time, at the same time as thousands of fundraising events have been scrapped and charity shops have closed across the UK. COVID-19 compromised the health, mental health and livelihoods of individuals and families, causing more people than ever to reach out to charities for help and support. Many are still relying on this help as they navigate their way back to normal. Coupled with this, is the increased financial pressure that third sector organisations
are facing and it’s no surprise that many charities are struggling to meet this increased demand for their services. According to the Charity Commission research, 90% of charities experienced some form of negative impact as a result of the pandemic and 60% of charities saw a loss of income. Of those surveyed 62% anticipated some level of threat to their charity’s financial viability in the next 12 months. Despite this, charities witnessed overwhelming demand for their services, and many adapted the ways in which they worked and raised funds; many expect this to continue as society and the economy work to recover.
Paperweight, as a communal advice service, has seen demand explode even further as furlough was withdrawn and the cost of living surges. Not only were we trying to respond to clients seeking advice regarding redundancy and universal credit, but these challenges have been exacerbated by the significant social upheaval faced by many individuals contacting or referred to our charity, including domestic abuse and mental health challenges, as well as isolation from their regular social networks and support. Additionally, much of Paperweight’s work moved online or via the telephone and clients and trained volunteer advisors, caseworkers, were concerned this

would have an adverse effect. It didn’t! In the course of its rapid development since inception 10 years ago, Paperweight is constantly breaking new ground, with its focus on the provision of community support for the disenfranchised, to those lost “in the system” and to those at their wits’ end. We offer free and confidential pro-active solutions utilising 160 trained caseworkers to provide guidance and assistance with debt issue, benefit applications and appeals, family law matters, LPAs, probate, advocacy and tackling all manner of bureaucratic obstacles and administrative pitfalls. Paperweight helps people when they are at their most vulnerable – after a bereavement, in the middle of a family breakdown or perhaps a person who is disabled and is struggling to get the benefits they’re entitled to. As this year progresses, there will be new, additional needs related to the long-term effects of the pandemic – everything from poverty to isolation, educational inequalities and mental health, as well as people living with ‘long-Covid’. We at Paperweight are ready to help.

West led the king of spades and declarer took this with his Ace. All too speedily, declarer cashed dummy’s ace and queen of trumps and the slam could no longer be made. It may seem odd that anyone should fail to make twelve tricks on this layout. However, the failure to develop a plan was the reason for this disaster. Declarer should have seen that entries to dummy were sparse and should have begun by taking the Ace and King of trumps, leaving the Queen as a later entry to dummy. When West shows out on the second round, leaving East with a trump winner, declarer cashes the Ace and jack of Diamonds and then crosses to dummy with Queen of trumps to play the diamonds. When the King of diamonds is played, East ruffs in with his high trump but declarer simply throws his losing spade. Furthermore, when the lead is regained, Club King is the entry to cash the Queen and six of diamonds, which will take care of declarer’s two club losers. Declarer will now make 1 spade,5 trumps, 4 diamonds and 2 clubs.

35 UK students brace the wind and rain to run The Jerusalem Marathon for GIFT
Despite the downpours in Jerusalem on Friday, over 35 UK students on their gap year, took part in the Jerusalem Marathon to raise money for GIFT. 19 year old Dalia Bornstein. currently studying in MMY Seminary, Jerusalem, with a place to study medicine at Cambridge University next year and Joel Herman in Reishit Yeshiva, studying at Leeds next year. have both been volunteering for GIFT for a number of years; decided to put together a team of friends and fellow students to run in the Jerusalem Marathon. Joel Herman told us “Despite the weather, the run was incredible and everyone was so full of energy to run for such an amazing cause. The vibe was unmatched and every runner was constantly pushing each other on to make it to the end!” The festivities kicked off with a pasta party at Cafe Le Giardino, Jerusalem the night before the run for the students to have the opportunity to load up on carbs before the race and to receive their running number and GIFT Tshirt for the marathon. The group heard words of inspiration from Jodeci Joseph, a young motivational speaker who spoke about just how much of a difference one person can make. Shira Joseph, GIFT’s High School

Jerusalem stone didn’t put them off. Dalia Bornstein said “Joel & I thought that participating in the Jerusalem Marathon would be a wonderful experience. We realised that many British gap year students probably felt the same way, so we set up a team and what charity is closer to home for all of us than GIFT!? They support everyone in need in the community and are changing the world through inspiring and facilitating giving. In my life, I have been continually inspired by GIFT for as long as I can remember through volunteering as a home help, tutor and driver and being a part of their educational sessions in school; they empower us to make positive change in the world. With this, I reached out to Shira Joseph and she was just as excited about it as Joel and I. The message that GIFT stands for really spoke for itself so once we advertised the run, everyone was keen to get involved! After the event, the inspiration was palpable; through the experience of running and raising money for GIFT - their message resonated with so many and GIFT continues to inspire…” Sar far over £7,700 has been raised, to sponsor the runners, go to https/gift. enthuse.com/cf/jerusalemmarathon

Chief inducts Birmingham Central rabbi The Chief Rabbi has formally inducted Rabbi Yossi Hambling at Birmingham Central United Synagogue. Some 140 people attended the ceremony including Rabbi Yossi and Rebbetzen Channah’s family, communal Rabbis and Rebbetzens, representatives from the Office of the Chief Rabbi and United Synagogue. During his induction address the Chief Rabbi said, “At an induction, the community is a bit nervous, they see the potential and they are hoping it will be realised. We are past this phase now. This community is celebrating what it knows it definitely has. And if you’ll excuse the pun, it must be quite humbling to be following in the footsteps of all those eminent rabbis. But I have no doubt history will show you will stand out amongst the greatest.” Rabbi Hambling outlined the ways in
Georgia, Alexander, Elijah and Sophia preparing for Pesach
which he had begun to inspire the community, noted that he was planning further learning opportunities and spoke about his plans to increase regular social and cultural programming in the shul. “Thank you to the entire membership for letting us into your lives and allowing us to share in your joys and sorrows,” he said. “You are all great individuals who make up an incredible community, and we look forward to travelling the road ahead together with you.” Rabbi and Rebbetzen Hambling have been in the roles for seven months. He is the community’s 12th person to be appointed Rabbi. Geoffrey Clements, Chair of Birmingham Central, praised the synagogue’s selection committee and US in recruiting a Rabbinic couple during a pandemic.

New CEO for Migdal Emunah
Migdal Emunah was established 10 years ago, in response to a crisis demand for service provision for those in our Jewish community who have experienced sexual abuse and violence. We have continued to deliver this critical service since 2013. Migdal Emunah was founded by Yehudis Goldsobel, who, through her own lived experiences, has developed a trauma-informed service provision which leads the way both in our community and in the wider sector. She has campaigned Erica Marks tirelessly to amplify the voices and experiences of Jewish victims of sexual abuse locally and nationally. Over the past ten years, Yehudis has spearheaded the movement to tackle sexual abuse and safegaurding in a variety of forums but most notably within the UK Jewish community. Through her enthusiastic work in pushing for safeguarding reform in our community we have slowly seen progress in some communal and religious organisations adopting policies, having discussions and developing service provision with regards to sexual abuse. As a board of Trustees we are grateful for the dedicated years Yehudis has invested in the organisation and have taken great

pride in having Yehudis lead on what is sadly a very divisive issue within our community. With this in mind we were faced with our greatest challenge yet in finding a new Chief Executive to lead Migdal Emunah forwards in our strategy and development. In this recruitment process we have had the privilege to meet with some exceptional candidates and are excited to welcome our new CEO, Erica Marks. Erica will be starting with us on the 4th April 2022 to work alongside Yehudis for an interim handover period. Erica brings a wealth of experience in education, health and social care and especially in the charity sector. She has worked within the Jewish and wider communities, has a strong safeguarding background, and a history of operational achievements. Erica is looking forward to expanding on the existing foundations within Migdal Emunah and being able to develop new projects for our community. We are looking forward to working together with Erica to achieve our goals of better safeguarding for children and young people and the delivery of specialist services for victims and survivors of sexual abuse.

Those who go the extra mile ….. or two! BY JACQUELINE CURZON
The news at the moment is really all about one event the invasion of the Ukraine by Russia. And one of the first things that you realise when one person starts a fight is that as sure as ‘eggs is eggs,’ lots of other people will start joining in or starting up elsewhere. So we are finding ourselves not only with Mr Putin trying to annexe a neighbouring democratic state but with the Chinese Premier starting trouble somewhere else, and of course you then have Iran flexing its muscles again, and we have North Korea getting stuck in with lots of drums and trumpets and launching new super missiles into the sea around Japan. In fact they are indicating that they have the means to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile called a Hwasong-17, with the range to Jacqueline Curzon hit America. Troubled times. The mind boggles. As it happens, McCain chips are no longer under supervision so one of the potential problems may have gone away. And now a musical story about the good and the bad. One day a 93 year old man went to a concert. He listened to the music in a church in Bath and at the interval decided to get up and go for a walk, he fell and broke his hip, luckily for him he was attended to by a senior A&E Doctor who happened to be the organist and the Reverend in the same church who was a retired surgeon, they made him comfortable and whilst this was happening some other members of the audience rang the ambulance service whilst he was lying on the floor in the auditorium. The patient said to the concert orchestra, “I don’t want to mess things up, do please carry on.” This was all the more impressive as the ambulance didn’t turn up for nearly 12 hours. Unfortunately for the ambulance service, a former ITV journalist from Bristol happened to be at the concert and saw the incident of the pensioner on the floor and therefore was able to share this with the media. In fact as he was so brave he was compared with people on the Titanic where the band played their music on the main deck as the ship went down. Everyone had nice things to say about the pensioner and everyone said how incredibly brave he was, as he was in a lot of pain, and to have been so incredibly stoic. As usual the ambulance service apologised and said sometimes there were longer than expected waiting lists, due to backed up A &E departments, so if you’re 93 and don’t want to spend 12 hours on a stone floor, avoid concerts. Which links to one of my favourite bugbears, e-scooters. Dangerous, often illegal and always a talking point. Some Motor Mechanics of ill repute are now taking the scooters, which normally have a top speed of 15 miles per hour, and hacking the software in them, which allows them to manipulate the controls on the top speed and as a result one can see some scooters achieving up to 50 miles per hour. Absolutely hideous. The really scary bit is that most riders are not wearing helmets. My father in law who in his youth rode motorcycles used to say “if you wear a ten bob (50 pence) helmet you must have
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
a ten bob head”. So if your child has an e-scooter, I strongly suggest you make them cover up. If you remember Covid and all the restrictions you will remember fines (fixed penalty notices) that were issued to Joe Public for the many and varied Covid related offences. During the period nearly 125,000 notices were issued, and guess what - 51,000 remain unpaid. So what do you say, I mean does it really matter? Well yes, especially as there is a pressure for an amnesty, on those still outstanding, so once again the law abiding citizen has or will pay the price. And to extend the discussion further, what about an amnesty for parking or speeding fines? No chance. To top this our beloved Met has just issued 20 more fines to the party goers at Number 10, will they get an amnesty too? What a waste of time and effort. Two weeks ago a remarkable lady died aged 94, Vera Gissing. She was one of the children rescued by Sir Nicholas Winton MBE in 1939 as part of the Kindertransport. (he was known as Britain’s Schindler). The details of the rescue and of many things relating to this are the stuff of legend, but it was not until 1988 when Nicholas Winton‘s wife discovered a scrapbook which contained all the photographs and names and letters and documents from the people that he rescued that his heroism became known to his wife and a wider audience. He was then invited - and this is the interesting bit - to sit in the audience of a BBC television show called ‘That’s Life,’ which was run by the famous Esther Rantzen (now known as a tireless campaigner for children and senior citizens, and the instigator of the Childline and Silverline charities). In fact Winten was the special guest and unbeknownst to him, he was sitting next to one of the children he had saved, Vera Gissing nee Diamante. On the programme Esther Rantzen started thumbing through the scrapbook and recounted the saving of 669 Czech Children's lives, in 1939, from Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia. She then revealed that he was in the audience and the story unfolded. Once Vera and Sir Nicholas had become acquainted, Esther asked other survivors to stand up and dozens did, a truly remarkable event and this proved a very heartwarming tale, and great TV. Later in life Vera wrote her memoirs and became a friend of Sir Nicholas. Then in 2001 she co-wrote his biography. He died in 2015 aged 106. It’s been a tough couple of weeks at Chez Curzon as I have been struggling a lot with a lack of energy but have been invigorated by all of the acts of chessed that I have received. Thank you. Tomato and Bread Soup
Another delicious recipe from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com
This is a delicious Italian soup that is a perfect way to use up excess bread before Pesach. It is made with store cupboard ingredients and was originally created to use up stale bread but if you do not have any, just place the bread in the oven for 5 minutes and this will achieve the desired effect of thickening the soup. Ripe plum tomatoes when in season provide the best flavour, but as their season fades, you can substitute the fresh for tinned. Plum tomatoes are oval-shaped and smaller than the average, but they have less liquid and firmer flesh. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 45 minutes Serves: 8 Ingredients 6 tablespoons olive oil ½ red chilli – de seeded and finely chopped – optional 175g stale bread – cut into cubes 2 onions – peeled and finely chopped 4 cloves garlic – peeled and finely chopped 1kg ripe plum tomatoes – peeled and chopped or 3 tins 400g peeled plum tomatoes – chopped 1 teaspoon sugar 4 tablespoons fresh basil 2 litres vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper – to taste Garnish: Extra virgin olive oil Sprigs of fresh basil Croutons for garnish Method 1) Pre- heat the oven to 200 C/400F/ Gas mark 6. 2) Drizzle 2-3 tablespoons olive oil over the cubed bread. Season with salt and pepper and bake for 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
3) Heat the remaining oil in a large saucepan and add the onion, garlic, chilli – if using and cook until they soften. Stir in the tomatoes, bread (leave some for garnish), sugar and basil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4) Cook over a moderate heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 5) Add the stock to the tomato mixture, bring to the boil, cover and reduce the heat to simmer for 15 minutes. 6) Liquidise or puree 3 ladles of the soup and return to the saucepan. 7) Taste and adjust seasoning accordingly. To serve the stylish way: Swirl a little extra virgin olive oil onto the soup and garnish with some sprigs of fresh basil and reserved croutons.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com THE CHRIS V WILL DEBATE Dear Rabbi OK so by now everyone has seen the whole episode of Chris Rock making fun of Will Smith’s wife’s illness and the latter going up to him and smacking him. I’ve seen the debate raging everywhere and there seems no clear consensus on this. Can you tell me what the Jewish view is? Dana Dear Dana Some argue how chivalrous of the man to defend his wife like that so publicly. Others condemn him for his violence. Some argue that the verbal abuse was just as bad and he had the right to respond whichever way. Others maintain that they are incomparable. Many of us grew up with the slogan, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” Nothing can be further from the truth. Words matter. Jewish law has a very strong position on verbal abuse. Daily in our prayer service (at the end of the Amidah) we ask G-d to help to “guard my tongue from speaking inappropriately.” But that remains eminently incomparable to physically striking someone. In the Torah we read how Moses went out one day and saw one man striking his fellow and immediately said: “Wicked one, why are you hitting your fellow?” The Talmud quotes the following: “Rash Lakish said, how do we know that a person who raises his fist is called a wicked person even though he has not yet hit? From the verse, “he said to the wicked one why do you
strike your fellow…” (Sanhedrin 58b). I’m not going to get into the rights and wrongs of comedy – what people should or should not expect. The hard fact is, as I wrote, words matter. Making fun of someone, especially their illness, is grossly offensive and insensitive. But, as I learnt already in kindergarten, nothing ever justifies physical violence. If he had shot him in the kneecap, would that then have been OK? Who gets to decide what forms of violence are more or less acceptable. There’s a reason it’s called assault and is against the law. It’s not chivalry. It’s pure bullying. Chivalry would have been walking up to him and telling him publicly he was bang out of order. He would have received universal applause. What he did was rage with a broad range of deep, underlying issues.
PESACH CLEANING 2022 Dear Rabbi Pesach is coming and I am stressing. Last couple of years during lockdown I found life more relaxing and easier to cope with the pre-Pesach cleaning. But this year it just seems so much again with all the old anxieties creeping back in. I dread the cleaning and the chaos. Your guidance will be appreciated. Sandra Dear Sandra That’s just the point, isn’t it? The fact that you were more relaxed these past two Pesachs only proves that it need not be a stressful experience. This

However, in the powerful words of this Mishnah, everybody has a time where they
question comes up annually and I can only sum up what I have said before. No one has benefitted more from Pesach cleaning than the tourist industry. For many, the enticement of not having to lift a finger makes the cost more than worthwhile. From Mexico to Manitoba you can find a fivestar Pesach experience virtually anywhere. The food may not be Mama’s recipe, and sharing a dining-room with four hundred people singing Vehi Sheamda in a variation of six different tunes - simultaneously, may not be as atmospheric as being surrounded by the warmth of family in the privacy of one’s own home; but it still ensures that tender hearts don’t start palpitating at the sight of Mr Muscle, Flash or Domestos. For the benefit of those who do stay home however, it all comes down to one verse: “No leavened matter shall be seen throughout your property.” This is the one verse that transforms clean conscientious housewives into OCD on the verge of a breakdown. I know some women who go scrubbing in cupboards before Pesach which hadn’t been opened since, well the last time it was cleaned, before the previous Pesach My dear mother bless her, even in her older age, displays more energy in her Pesach cleaning than the average Olympic medallist. When we were younger there was perhaps always the risk that we would take food into the playroom in the basement. The last of my siblings moved out of home nearly three decades ago. Still, my mother’s attention to detail in every nook and cranny
of that room is no less today than it was back then. And she’s not even home for the holiday! I think there is a psychological explanation in that Pesach has such a hold on history which is why we are driven to such punctilious observance. All the cleaning and scrubbing, the change of diet and habit is precisely what has so emblazoned Pesach on the Jewish psyche so that we always remember the birth of our nation. Indeed many non-observant Jews will run a mile from a breadcrumb during the eight days. But I want to go on the record to say, Pesach cleaning is not spring cleaning and it is precisely the over-obsessiveness that risks turning one of our most exciting festivals into a dreaded experience. It’s almost as though we’re looking to relive the servitude in Egypt so that we can better appreciate the Exodus celebration when the holiday

L’ilui Nishmat all the terror victims in Israel and the Jews of Ukraine contribute in some way to Hashem’s world, and who are we to judge if we are greater then others? There are countless stories of hidden tzadikim, men and women who appeared ‘normal,’ yet achieved remarkable things. Indeed, whereas Rabbi Akiva says that the foundation of all ethics is “love your neighbour as yourself” according to Ben Azzai the foundation of ethics is that man was created in G-d’s image. Since all humans are created in the image of G-d, a person should despise no man, for doing so would be like despising G-d. Furthermore, even someone who seems to be
worthless and a total detriment to society has his hour and his place. One never knows when that hour or place might come. arrives. “No leavened matter” means exactly that. It means no chametz food particles. It means certain sealed cupboards, koshered stoves and covered countertops. It does not mean going where no man – or woman – or child - has gone before. It does not mean scrubbing the parquet floor till you’ve sanded the wood down an inch. It doesn’t mean spending hours scouring the bath – unless you’ve actually enjoyed the occasional sandwich in there. And it certainly doesn’t mean that one should perceive Pesach preparation with the same trepidation as the Jews perceived their Egyptian taskmasters. On Passover we greet one another with Chag kosher v’sameach – “a kosher and happy Pesach.” The kosher bit is paramount. But for too many it comes at the expense of happy. Don’t do that. Torah from Israel Tazria: Thoughts About Da’as Torah – Part II BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN
Humans are fashioned in the image of G-d, and we are the only creatures who possess intelligent speech. Through regulating our language and controlling our tongues we become more G-dlike. By contrast, vulgar and unrefined language taints our divine capacity. Discretion is important in general, but prudent language is even more critical when discussing delicate issues. Surprisingly, the Torah extensively details the condition of a metzora, who is afflicted with an unseemly sickness. The minute laws regarding victims who suffer the revolting and contagious disease of tzara’at, occupy an entire parsha. Likewise, the Torah comprehensively delineates the halachot governing a zav or a zava- men or women who experience sustained bodily emissions. Instead of briefly summarizing these awkward situations, the Torah provides exhaustive coverage. The Torah doesn’t blush at any aspect of human experience, and doesn’t avoid these inelegant situations. There is no part of the human lifecycle which is “undignified” in the eyes of G-d. We constantly stand in His presence – both in our noble state and in our moments of lesser dignity. Religion is all-pervasive, we never walk away from His presence, and we never unfasten ourselves from halachik regulation. Just as we stand before Hashem on Yom Kippur in full glory, we stand before His will in our humiliating moments of frailty. There is no “time out” from religion and no space which is “out of bounds” from G-d. It is not just halacha which extends the will of Hashem’s to all human experience. The wisdom of Torah possesses relevance for all spheres of human experienceeven areas which lie beyond the formal boundaries of halacha. Torah comments upon the entire sweep of human experience- from culture to politics and from history to psychology. As we navigate an ever-changing and rapidly pivoting world, we look to the will of Hashem for guidance and for compass. Sadly, we often, incorrectly, bifurcate our experiences setting unnecessary and unhealthy barriers between the “religious” and the “secular” parts of our lives. This harmful division begins as soon as our school hours are segregated into “religious studies” and “secular studies”, implying that our broader interests are bereft of any religious meaning. When we study math are we not exploring the foundations of Hashem’s creation? Isn’t biology an opportunity to study the wonders
of Hashem’s masterpiece called Man? Shouldn’t we study the flow of history, to better appreciate the hidden divine hand coursing through human decisions? Is there any realm of human thought which is insulated from the will of G-d? Perhaps it would be wiser to divide the day into “kodesh studies” and “general studies”, allowing for differences between holy and mundane, while still granting religious meaning to our broader studies. Every element of our lives should be experienced through the prism of Hashem’s will. While halacha regulates a broad range of behavior, areas which aren’t dictated by halacha should be informed by the will of Torah. Nothing lies outside the realm of Torah and of the divine will- even our awkward and dysfunctional moments. Compartmentalisation of religion doesn’t just bifurcate our experience, it also negates the relevancy of Torah. The great challenge of every generation is to articulate the enduring relevance of Torah. Torah was delivered thousands of years ago and was ‘set’ in a very different cultural period. To many, it feels “yellowed”- outdated and obsolete. Even those who scrupulously adhere to its laws and traditions, often view Torah as marginally relevant to a flashy modern world of technology, politics, culture and entertainment. Torah remains external to their identity, and religious practice becomes passionless and lethargic. Stretching Torah to every corner of human experience preserves the relevancy of Torah, embedding it more deeply in our identity and infusing greater authenticity and passion. Relevance creates identification, which in turn generates passion. Last week the world lost its preeminent torah scholar, Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l. In addition to his prodigious and almost unimaginable commitment to Torah study, he was viewed by many as the source of da’as Torah. He offered Torah-based guidance about areas which lie outside the realm of halachik decisions such as: medical issues, financial decisions and personal dilemmas. For many who don’t practice da’as Torah, reliance upon non-empirical direction is incongruous with their rational lifestyles. My article last week attempted to frame the coherence of this phenomenon, particularly for those who don’t rely upon supernatural guidance. I have spent the past week reevaluating the culture of da’as Torah, and in particular, pondering the challenges facing those who don’t depend upon da’as Torah. Ironically, those who conduct their lives based on da’as Torah are less prone to
The great challenge of every generation is to articulate the enduring relevance of Torah. compartmentalization. Intrinsic to da’as torah-reliance is the assumption that every decision in life – halachik or otherwise- should be streamed through Torah. Decisions are subjected to Torah scholars and to the higher wisdom they provide. No realm is seen as “beyond” the purview of Torah. This is ironic because, generally, those who rely upon da’as Torah have less practical need for integrating their broader ‘world’ with Torah. Often, da’as Torah “advocates”, possess less interest in the broader world outside of Torah study. They are less interested in non-Torah studies and less attuned to cultural influences. Living in a more narrow and protected space, they have “less” to integrate with Torah and with the will of Hashem. By contrast, often, those who don’t rely upon da’as Torah, engage in a world of broader interests, facing a more considerable challenge of integrating their wider

experiences with religion and with Torah. As they don’t subscribe to da’as Torah, the notion that Torah is ubiquitous and that it possesses “panoramic relevance” is less assumed. It must be explicitly articulated and accentuated. There are no alleys of experience which are empty of Torah’s will. Torah suffuses our lives with halachick governance. For some, Torah also jackets their lives with direct answers to life’s manifold questions. For others, it should still provide the wisdom and the compass to navigate the complexities of life. For everyone, Torah is everything. Different groups transform it into “everything” in very different manners. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. Parshat Tazria:
Even A Miracle Requires Waiting BY GAVRIEL COHN
We’ve now entered the thicket of Sefer Vayikra, dealing as it does with the more obscure laws of sacrifices, Biblical leprosy, cleansing, and purity. Whilst there is a school of thought that considers tzaraat (Biblical leprosy) to be a physical medical malady, this is a minority view amongst the commentators (see, for example, Ralbag and Hertz). Most understand tzaraat to be a miraculous disease, a punishment one receives for gossiping and other sins. As the Rambam declares, “tzaraat is not a natural occurrence; instead it is a sign and a wonder prevalent among the Jewish People to warn them against evil speech.” The French Torah Commentator, the Rashbam was a grandson of Rashi. He took it upon himself “to explain the literal meaning of the Torah’s text.” As he wrote, “despite the supreme importance of Jewish Law, I have not made it my task to write a halachic commentary of the Torah based on the interpretations of our Sages, this can be found in the commentary of Rashi, my mother’s father; instead
my goal is to elucidate the plain reading of the verses according to their common human understanding.” Yet when the Rashbam reached our sedra he suddenly renounced his goal, his quill no longer penned explanations “according to the common literal understanding.” Instead, he wrote “the passages that deal with tzaraat elude our comprehension and are beyond human knowledge; therefore, we must rely on the interpretation of our Sages.” Tzaraat, according to the majority of rabbinic scholars, was a divine disease that plagued those who sinned. This supernatural phenomenon, occurring only when G-d’s Presence permeated the Land of Israel (Ramban), is seen as
one of the prime expressions of the divine reality of Biblical times, of when G-d’s will was so clearly manifested in the world, that sadly, we do not experience today. If a person would begin to gossip against his neighbour or act arrogantly, snowy blotches would appear on his skin and white hairs would sprout on his beard, he would have to be banished from the camp. It was a physical sign, as clear as day, that that person had sinned. However, despite all this, that tzaraat was a miraculous “sign and wonder,” from which a person would know with certainty that he had transgressed. There is another, conflicting aspect that pervades the Biblical passages. That of uncertainty.
If the white blotches that appeared upon one’s skin were not white enough, the afflicted individual had to be quarantined for seven days and wait for any further developments, waiting until the Kohen examined him again.
If the white blotches that appeared upon one’s skin were not white enough, the afflicted individual had to be quarantined for seven days and wait for any further developments, waiting until the Kohen examined him again. If the blotches were to spread or whiten, the Kohen would declare him to be impure. If they remained the same, he would be quarantined for another week. The Biblical text seems to stress these cases of uncertainty, of when the smitten indicidual would have to wait, week after week, until the marks upon his skin eventually become tzaraat. Thus, even within the miraculous tzaraat, there is this blend of the natural – the world unfurls as a process (see R’ Yosef Bechor Shor on Parshat Bo and the Rambam in his Guide for the Perplexed). It could take a fortnight to see those “signs and wonders” of tzaraat develop and grow, to ascertain whether he really was impure. Everything, perhaps, can take time, even the most Divine messages from above. Gav works as an Account Executive in Public Relations. The views expressed here are entirely his own. Tazria RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
THE MIRACLE OF THE MOTHER
The name of the sidra tells us that we will be reading about childbirth. On one level the sidra is giving us details of the laws of post-birth ritual purification. On another level it is emphasising the great miracle of procreation. Having a baby is the way that the individual is endowed with immortality, the way the family is granted continuity, the way the human race is given a future. Over the many years in which I was blessed to be a teacher of Judaism I was often asked why G-d doesn’t perform any miracles these days. I always had an answer to this question. I said that there are countless wonders that enrich our lives, and the two greatest are the continuation of life itself and the giving of new life. An additional question that I was often asked is whether the Jewish woman is inferior to the man, and my answer was always the same – that woman is the greater gender because she is the one who ushers in the future of humanity.
SEEING WELL
Rabbi Asher the Great from Stollin used
to quote the verse, “And the kohen shall see the infection” (Lev. 13:3). He said that no-one should confess to the Rebbe all his failings, nor all his good points. The Rebbe – like the kohen in the Torah – is clever enough to see the whole story for himself. He does not need an announcement of good points and bad points.
TOO HARD TO BE A KOHEN?
The Biblical kohanim were what is today called worker priests. They had much more to do than merely conduct the rituals and services in the sanctuary. They had skills and responsibilities far beyond the walls of tabernacle and temple. Their task included, as this week’s portion explains, assessing medical evidence: “The kohen shall examine the plague” (Lev. 13:3). It was a real duty carried out by real people in the real circumstances of the time. It also had metaphorical implications. If something was wrong in the state of society, the kohen had to be able to recognise the problem – and to take action to find a solution. Why the kohen? Didn’t he have enough to do in the sanctuary that he needed this extra burden? Apparently not. A kohen, like any form
of spiritual leader, had to be aware of his surroundings. If something was out of order it was not just an economic or political or some other adjectival issue. Everything was spiritual. The quality of society was a partnership between man and his Creator. Between them stood the kohen. He was not an ethereal being, Divinity incarnate. He was a human being like any other, but he had a G-d-given status that enabled him to convey earthly problems to G-d and transmit G-d’s messages to the earth. Was the task too hard? Hard it certainly was, but G-d equipped the kohanim to handle it.
The first question implies a paradox. How can a woman who has brought joy into the world become even temporarily ritually impure? The answer has to do with her role in procreation. Literally, physically, she is a partner with G-d in the creation of the world. When she menstruates, her potential for creation has not been realised that month and she has temporarily lost an opportunity of spiritual significance. After childbirth, her further creative potential is postponed for a short time. If she has given birth to a boy, her achievement is in a sense less spiritually significant than if she has a girl, as the baby girl brings her own creative potential into the world.
IMPURITY & CHILDBIRTH
The laws of ritual purity and impurity are obviously designed to help us to achieve holiness. Some of these laws are easier to explain than others. One of the more difficult comes at the beginning of the sidra (Lev. 12:2), where we hear that if a woman has a male child she is t’me’ah (ritually impure) for seven days but if it is a girl she is t’me’ah for 14 days. Two questions arise: why does childbirth make her ritually impure at all, and why is there a difference between the birth of a boy and a girl?

Weekly Dvar Torah F R O M E R E TZ Y I S R A E L
Our Birth Stories BY RABBANIT SHANI TARAGIN
This year, as a Jewish “leap year”, Parashat HaChodesh, the special maftir portion we read on the Shabbat before (or on) Rosh Chodesh Nissan, coincides with Parashat Tazria. At first glance, these two parshiyot seem to have little in common; Parashat Tazria deals with laws of tumah caused by childbirth and tzara’at. Parashat HaChodesh (Shemot 12:1–20) details the laws of Rosh Chodesh, Korban Pesach, matzah and chametz in preparation for Yetziat Mitzrayim. Yet, both Tazria and HaChodesh reflect the cycle of time and life; Tazria describes the birth of an individual and HaChodesh the birth of a nation! Parashat Tazria begins with describing the laws of a woman who brings forth life and simultaneously confronts the “tumah” of the life (i.e. uterine blood) lost from within her. Her state of tumah revolves around a weekly cycle – she is “impure” for seven days after the birth of a boy, and on the eighth day he is circumcised. The
mother remains “impure” for fourteen days after the birth of a girl, and after the respective days of separating from the Mikdash (forty in total for a boy, eighty for a girl), a sheep is brought as an olah offering together with fowl for a sin-offering. This weekly cycle continues through the parasha with the laws of tzara’at, as the kohen examines the afflicted every seven days for a period of several weeks. Parashat HaChodesh introduces Am Yisrael to a monthly cycle of birth and renewal. Ten days after the New Moon of the “first month” (i.e. Nissan), a lamb or kid goat must be taken and guarded. On the fourteenth of the month it is slaughtered and eaten (after the males are circumcised) in the home, and the blood is placed on the doorpost as a sign for salvation from the plague of the deaths of the Egyptian firstborn. Additionally, in the future, for a seven day period, the people will eat matzot and refrain from chametz beginning with the fourteenth of the month. The motifs of birth, blood,
Tazria
renewal, seven, fourteen days and sheep sacrifice describing the beginnings of the Jewish nation, echo in Parashat Tazria with the birth of a Jewish child and the rebirth of a metzora. Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch, in examining the verse of “HaChodesh hazeh LACHEM Rosh Chodashim” with which Shemot 12 opens, explains, “This renewal of the moon shall be a beginning of renewals to YOU.” i.e., noticing the fresh birth of the moon shall induce you to achieve a similar rejuvenation. Every month provides us with an opportunity for personal reflection, renewal and rebirth and every year, beginning with Rosh Chodesh Nissan, we recount the story of our national birth. We are reminded of the stories with which Sefer Shemot begins – midwives and mothers who birth and save children from Pharaoh’s decrees of death, circumcision performed by a mother for her son, plagues and pangs leading to the birth of the Children of Yisrael as they exit through their doorposts of blood and the
amniotic waters of Yam Suf. How appropriate on Rosh Chodesh Nissan to be reminded of the messages of personal birth and national birth expressed through mitzvot which reflect the ongoing waxing and waning of our relationship with Hashem. Prior to retelling the story of Yetziat Mitzrayim on the Seder night, we revisit fourteen days which accompany the birth process. The messages of Parashat Tazria and Parashat HaChodesh encourage us to recognize that our individual and national birth stories provide us with weekly, monthly and annual opportunities to transform and renew ourselves. Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov! Rabbanit Shani Taragin is educational director of World Mizrachi and teaches at Matan and other educational institutions in Israel. She is a member of Mizrachi’s Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/ speakers).
“When a woman conceives and gives birth to a male… on the eighth day, he shall be circumcised” (Vayikra 12:2-3)
Sidra Summary Sometimes a second seven-day period was necessary. Eventually the Kohen would declare whether the person was tameh or tahor (pure).
3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 13:18-23
Even if a wound looked like tzara’at, it could not be judged as such until after it was fully healed and the normal inspection procedure by the Kohen had been carried out.
1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – VAYIKRA 12:1-13:5
After childbirth, a woman would wait several weeks before bringing an elevation offering (olah) and a sin offering (chatat). A baby boy is circumcised on the eighth day after birth, even if that falls on a Shabbat (Talmud Shabbat 132a). G-d told Moshe and Aharon that someone whose skin appeared to indicate a particular type of skin disease (tzara’at) would have to show the blemish to a Kohen. The Kohen would evaluate and decide if the affliction was clearly tzara’at, thus rendering the person impure (tameh). If the case was unclear, the Kohen would quarantine the person for seven days.
2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 13:6-17
After the first period of quarantine, the Kohen would re-inspect the blemish.
4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 13:24-28
It was also possible for tzara’at to develop from a burn. However, a burn and a blemish that were adjacent to one another could not combine together to form the minimum size needed to render an affliction as tzara’at (Rashi).
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 13:29-39
Tzara’at could erupt on the scalp or on the beard area, causing a loss of hair. The signs of affliction were two golden hairs appearing after the onset of baldness (Rashi).
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 13:40-59
A slightly different form of tzara’at is detailed, which caused a more substantial loss of hair. A metzora (one who has been contaminated with tzara’at) was sent outside of the camp and had to tear their
garments. Tzara’at could also infect clothing. A suspected garment was set apart before the Kohen made a ruling about whether it was tameh. If it was declared tameh, the garment was burnt. Point to Consider: Why are items of clothing (and indeed people themselves) no longer affected by tzara’at? (see Ramban’s commentary to 13:47)

Dear Eli How can I become a social media influencer? Rachel Dear Rachel Although at SiteAwe we build business’ social media, not influencers, here are four tips to create and grow a community on social media: 1. Gear your content toward your target market. Whenever posting content, always keep in mind that it should attract your target market. 2. Quality over quantity; fewer but better followers are optimal. Don’t aim to just reach high numbers, aim to reach and connect with your target market. 3. Constantly interact with your audience. By interacting with your audience you can build a community where followers buy into your brand. 4. Keep in mind that posts attract new followers whilst stories/statuses delight existing followers. Understand what you’re looking to achieve and aim towards that. Social media is POWERFUL for businesses. But a community around your business with followers to do more than just follow is even MORE powerful. Our partners include The Jewish Weekly and Badatz Igud Rabbonim. Tzaraat (often mistranslated as “leprosy”) is a supra-natural illness which also can afflict garments. If white or pink patches appear on a person’s skin (dark red or green in garments), a kohen is summoned. Judging by various signs, such as an increase in size of the afflicted area after a seven-day quarantine, the kohen pronounces it tamei (impure) or tahor (pure).

A person afflicted with tzaraat must go and live alone outside of the camp (or city) until he is healed. The afflicted area in a garment is removed; if the tzaraat spreads or recurs, the entire garment must be burned. Tzaraaat is a message from Hashem to wake up and do teshuvah. We don’t have it today but we still can’t speak lashon harah. We must be evry careful what we say. Hashem is listening and if we say bad things about others, we will get punished. But every time we say nice things, we’ll get rewarded! And did you know, that for every second that you want to say something mean and you don’t, you get rewrd?

here is Chometz everywhere!” Hadassa exclaimed as she shook out the Lego box. “I know,” replied Ima. “I found a Cheerio by the clothes airer!” “I’m so tired,” whined Rivki. “This is too hard.” “It is such a big mitzva,” said Ima. “It’s really hard, but you are doing two mitzvos at once - you are clearing away the chometz for Pesach and you are listening to your parents.” “Ok,” sighed Rivki as she carried on wiping down the shelves. “You know in school today, Sari had to leave early because she was not well. She threw up everywhere!” “Rivki! Let’s not say these things about other people,” said Ima. “But it’s true!” Rivki protested. “It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, we should say bad things about other people.” The next day Rivki was back in school. She sat down next to Talia and while they waited for their teacher to arrive, they chatted about their Sunday and how much they had done to help their mothers clean for Pesach. “I got into trouble with Ima,” said Rivki. “Because I spoke lashon hora about Sari when she was sick in class.” “Oh well, I’m sure it’s fine,” replied Talia, quickly turning away as their teacher, Miss Landau, entered the classroom. The rest of the day was a great day for

Rivki. Her class were shown how to make pretend blood water and then they acted out being Egyptians drinking the ‘blood’. Everyone was joking around and Rivki was so excited that she didn’t even notice she had spilt a bit of the red water onto her teacher’s dress. The next afternoon, Rivki and Hadassa went to Kosher Nation to buy some milk and bread for Ima.

“Oh no!” gasped Rivki. “I can’t believe I did that and everyone knows about it.” Rivki was so upset that she ran out of the shop, so Hadassa quickly paid and followed her. When they got home, Rivki had calmed down. She went to join everyone in the kitchen ready for supper. “Rivki,” said Abba, “Talia’s Abba came up to me today and told me how you told Talia that you had spoken lashon hora about a girl in your class.” Rivki started crying. What was going on? How did everyone know these bad things about her? Sobbing all the way through, she told Abba and Ima all about what had happened over the last couple of days. “Well you know,” said Ima. “Lashon hora is alot like chometz crumbs, they get spread everywhere very quickly. But unlike chometz which we can clean up before Pesach, we can never get back the words we spoke. Even ones that are about ourselves like you spoke to Talia. So we have to be very careful what we say about others, including ourselves.” Rivki thought about it. “ It was really hurtful when people said bad things about me, so I will be more careful and try not to say bad things about others. And I will say sorry to Sari for saying lashon hira about her.” “That’s my wonderful daughter,” said Abba smiling, as they all happily tucked in to Ima’s delicious supper.
