Israel calls for a joint forensic analysis into journalist death Mizrachi’s Weekend Of Inspiration

Israel has called on the Palestinian Authority to conduct a “joint forensic analysis” into the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh during an IDF anti-terror operation inside Jenin yesterday. The IDF are investigating the incident. According to the IDF, “massive shootings” were fired at forces who responded by firing. There were no casualties to IDF forces. A second Al Jazeera journalist, Ali Samodi, is in stable condition after sustaining a gunshot wound. Palestinian officials and the network blame IDF troops for the incident. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is determined to uncover the truth based on documentation and blasted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for blaming Israel without substantive material. Bennett confirmed IDF forces were conducting an operation in northern Samaria as part of efforts to stop a wave of terrorism that had seen 19 Israelis murdered in six terror attacks. “During the engagement, armed Palestinians shot in an inaccurate, indiscriminate and uncontrolled manner,” he explained. “Our forces from the IDF returned fire as accurately, carefully and responsibly as possible.” Abu Akleh was fatally shot in the head during the exchange. “The Palestinian Authority rushed to blame Israel for her

death and the president of the PA made unfounded accusations against Israel before any investigation had been carried out,” said Bennett. “Based on preliminary information that we have, there is a significant possibility that the journalist was shot by the armed Palestinians. However, to uncover the truth, there must be a real investigation, and the Palestinians are currently preventing that. Without a serious investigation, we will not reach the truth.” Israel’s appeals to the PA to conduct a forensic analysis to uncover the truth have failed so far. “The Palestinians are refusing, I expect them to cooperate and refrain from any actions that may contaminate the investigation,

Bennett said. Israel’s leader expanded on the issues related to Jenin. “For two months, Israel’s citizens have been subject to a series of deadly terrorist attacks,” he explained. “Palestinian terrorists carry out premeditated attacks to murder Israelis. “Last night’s action in Jenin is part of a series of counterterrorism efforts meant to put an end to the wave of terrorism and restore security to Israeli citizens. We are determined to continue until we have achieved our goal, and we stand by our men and women of the IDF, the ISA and the police, who risk their lives daily to protect ours.” Continued on page 2

On the other hand, we have seen footage of indiscriminate shooting by Palestinian terrorists, which is likely to have hit the journalist. We will communicate our findings in a clear and transparent manner to our American friends, as well as to the Palestinian Authority.” Gantz confirmed Israel wanted to conduct a joint investigation. “I sent a clear message to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas today, that our responsibility as leaders is to maintain security, to conduct ourselves in a way that will prevent further violence and bloodshed and to uncover the truth,” he said. “We have also communicated with additional countries and officials, including Qatar, where Al Jazeera headquarters are based. We expressed that the findings at this time indicate that there is a reasonable chance that the journalist was shot by Palestinian armed terrorists. This being said, we will conduct an in-depth and comprehensive investigation and deliver our findings to them. We are currently in the midst of an ongoing investigation of the incident, it is

TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488 important that we uncover the truth about how it unfolded.” Gantz also spoke about the terror wave that has claimed 19 lives in recent weeks. “We will continue to take all the necessary measures to fight terrorism and to maintain the security of the citizens of Israel,” he said. “This is our top mission. We will do this in a way that reflects the values of the State of Israel, being as precise as possible and taking measures to prevent harm to uninvolved civilians. At the same time, we will continue to investigate incidents in which people have been harmed. “We conduct such in-depth investigations and I am proud of the IDF troops that continue to serve us and I will continue to provide them with the support needed to conduct their activities.” IDF Spokesperson Ran Kochav told reporters it was too soon to ascertain who shot Abu Akleh. “We are precise in our gunfire,” he said. “We are investigating the events and reviewing the angles of fire. She may have been shot by Palestinians. She was very close to them. But if soldiers were responsible, we will have to apologise if a mistake was made.” He added, “I cannot be 100% sure. I am not sure we will be able to definitively know the truth without their cooperation.” Abu Akleh, 51, was an experienced journalist from Jerusalem who had been with the network for two decades covering Israel and the West Bank. A post-mortem by the Institute of Pathology at An Najah University in Nablus was reportedly inconclusive that Abu Akleh was shot at short range by the IDF.

IAA investigates Turkey flight delay

One of the images sent to the passengers BY LILLY JOSEPH

Investigations have begun into the delay of a flight about to take off from Israel to Turkey at Ben Gurion Airport after passengers received phone messages of plane crashes on Tuesday. There were 160 passengers on board the Boeing 737 Anadolu Jet, a Turkish Airlines subsidiary, when the disturbing incident occurred. Nine passengers aged around 18 were detained at Ben Gurion according to police and were reportedly from a village in northern Israel. Messages are believed to have included

images of a Turkish Airlines plane crash in the Netherlands in 2009 and another plane crash in the US in 2013. The Israel Airport Authority is investigating. An IAA statement at the time noted, “Security crews are taking all necessary steps to ensure that there is no danger to passengers. This includes a re-inspection of the passengers and their luggage. All the steps taken are done in cooperation and coordination with the flight’s captain, who exhibited great responsibility with his decision to return the plane to the terminal.” The IAA added that the flight would depart Ben Gurion when security determined no risk to passengers or the plane.

WJC appeal to Czech government BY LEAH WAXLER

World Jewish Congress has called on the Czech government who take up the Council of the European Union presidency this year to “put a stop” to antisemtism. WJC President Ronald S. Lauder made the comments at a meeting of senior Jewish community leaders on Monday. “It is high time for the European Council to establish a permanent working group on combating the hatred of Jews as well as all forms of racism,” he said. Addressing WJC leaders, Czech Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurecka responded, “Europe has clearly said no to hatred and

racism. We don’t want to be spectators. We want to take steps in the field of culture and education. We will make changes so that we are able to face these lies.” The impact in Ukraine on Jewish communities was discussed. WJC is involved in humanitarian efforts. Noting a recent visit to Warsaw, Lauder thanked Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia and Poland for welcoming a “large stream of refugees” fleeing Ukraine. Lauder said antisemitism may increase as a result of the war. He added that the word “antisemitism” should be replaced by “Jew hatred” to accurately reflect the times. CAA slam “grossly insufficient” sentence BY SIMCHA ABIR

Campaign Against Antisemitism has criticised a Liverpool magistrate for not imposing a custodial sentence on a teenager who threatened to “bomb” a synagogue”. Liverpool Youth Court heard that the boy, who received a 12-month referral order, searched Google for his nearest synagogue and downloaded instructions for making bombs. He was pictured wearing a mask with swastikas on, making a white power salute and giving a Nazi salute. “I am a domestic terror threat. I will bomb a synagogue,” the sixteen-yearold boy, who has autism and cannot be named for legal reasons, allegedly wrote on Twitter. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring, sentencing, said he had “struggled greatly” with a decision. Goldspring handed out a non-custodial sentence in the “public interest” as a custodial punishment may jeopardise rehabilitative steps made. CAA disagreed with the ruling stating the sentence was “grossly insufficient and must be enhanced”. A spokesman explained, “We are seeing more and more youngsters being groomed and recruited by the far-right, which is

immensely troubling. Video games are one of the most attractive mediums for extremist propagandising, and parents, teachers and the authorities ignore them at our peril. The Chief Magistrate, who even admitted that this is one of the most appalling cases in his entire career, is absolutely wrong not to impose a custodial sentence. He may, astoundingly, believe that it is not in the public interest to incarcerate someone who declared his intention to bomb a synagogue and may have sought ways to do so, but the Jewish community would beg to differ. It is not for nought that synagogues in the UK require security guards and other special safety measures.” It is understood the boy became radicalised after playing the free online video game Fortnite. Gerard Pitt, defending, said the boy wrote a number of antisemitic, racist and anti-LGBT posts on social media. He also promoted the “incel” subculture. Pitt told the court the boy had a “very large library” of far-right content but had moved away from these views. Goldspring, sentencing, said the boy had been derogatory about “every minority group that existed” and had something to say about it.

Israel ends PCR tests at Ben Gurion BY LEAH WAXLER

Israel’s Ministry of Health has ended its Covid-19 measures by removing on-arrival PCR tests. Under new guidelines agreed by the Ministry and Airports Authority passengers landing at Ben Gurion airport from May 20 no longer need to perform a PCR test. Israel’s Ministry of Health’s announced the news on Twitter. “The decision was made in light of the decline in morbidity data,” wrote the Ministry. “It was agreed that the professionals would formulate a mechanism for maintaining the suitability of the testing system at Ben Gurion Airport, in order to enable it to be operated quickly, in full or in part when necessary.” This Tuesday also saw foreign travellers

to Israel allowed to take an antigen test before boarding the plane instead of a PCR test. Any passenger who chooses the antigen option must perform the test in the 24 hours prior to departure to Israel. The announcements are the latest developments by Israel to ease entry since relaxing measures in February. Israel’s Minister of Tourism Yoel Ravozov tweeted his support. Sharon Ehrlich Bershadsky, Israel Government Tourist office, London, commented, “As consumer confidence grows in line with restrictions easing, it was important that we made the entry process as simple as possible for travellers whilst keeping health and safety a top priority. We are hopeful that the easing of on-arrival PCR tests will help encourage tourists to put Israel on their holiday lists this year.”

CAA dispute Starmer Barnet comments BY ADAM MOSES

James Marlow

National Jewish Assembly CEO James Marlow experienced an aggressive rant at Brent Cross Tesco whilst buying a tub of houmous last Thursday. A male Tesco worker allegedly shouted at him in a threatening manner as Marlow reached into the fridge while he was working. CCTV shows no plastic barrier around the man and fridge but in the centre of the aisle. Marlow tried to calm the situation but the worker and a female employee continued to shout at him. A complaint was filed. The store general manager failed to call Marlow within 24 hours as agreed. Marlow has since filed a report with police. Gary Mond, NJA chairman commented, “This reinforces the need for as much action to be taken via the police, courts and where necessary getting the law changed to fight antisemitism.” Police are investigating but have not confirmed if officers have requested a copy of the CCTV. Campaign Against Antisemitism have disputed Labour leader Keir Starmer’s assertion that his party’s historic local election triumph in Barnet last week illustrates trust has returned to the Jewish community. When Labour failed to win Barnet five years ago it was seen in Jewish quarters as a rejection of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. Labour’s success this time around was hailed by Starmer with fighting antisemtism in his party central to his comments. Barnet, in north London, is home to the largest Jewish population in the country. Labour won 41 of the 63 seats, up 25 from 2018, Conservatives won 22 seats, down 16. Speaking to Labour borough activists on the morning after the election success, he said, “My first words as leader of our Party, when I took over in April 2020, was that we were going to root out antisemitism from our Party, not tolerate it any more in our Party, change our Party. I said the test of that will be whether voters trust us again in places like Barnet, and they’ve done it. “That is your hard work, that is the change we’ve collectively brought about in our Labour Party, the trust that we’re building, putting us on the road to No 10 the road to that general election. That change these last two years has been really hard for us as a party, but we’ve done it, we’ve built those solid foundations, we’ve won here in Barnet, we’ve won across London, we’re winning

Labour leader Keir Starmer

from coast to coast.” Joe Glasman, CAA Head of Political and Government Investigations, was forthright in his response after the results, labelling Starmer’s suggestion that success of local Labour candidates in the heavily-Jewish borough demonstrated Labour had restored trust as “decidedly premature”. He said, “Our latest polling has shown that 81% of the Jewish community still feels that Labour is too tolerant of antisemitism. Yesterday, the most Jewish neighbourhoods in Barnet, including Edgware, Finchley Church End, Garden Suburb, Golders Green, Hendon, Mill Hill and Totteridge, returned not a single Labour councillor. We hope that Labour will concentrate on doing the work of fighting antisemitism rather than misleadingly implying that the problem is solved.”

CAA added that Labour under Starmer was a “more promising place” regarding antisemitism than under Corbyn but “a great deal of work” was needed to be done. Only the new ward of Whetstone saw a Labour councillor returned. Barnet Labour leader Barry Rawlings backed his leader, describing the triumph as “historic “ as his party took control for the first time. Labour was found by the Equality and Human Rights Commission to have engaged in unlawful discrimination and harassment of Jews. The EHRC report followed its investigation of the Labour Party in which CAA was the complainant. Starmer called the publication of the report a “day of shame” for the Labour Party.

Hapoel basketball fans attacked in Bilbao BY LEAH WAXLER

Israeli basketball fans were attacked by Palestinian protesters in Bilbao last Sunday. Hapoel U-net Holon basketball fans were supporting their team outside the game’s venue ahead of the FIBA Basketball Champions League tournament third place play off game against MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg. Hapoel lost the match 88-68. Israeli fans sang the national anthem when protesters waved Palestinian flags and sang anti-Israel chants. A fight allegedly took place after protesters threw objects at the Israeli group. A Hapoel fan reportedly said they the group was “ambushed,” was reported to have said. He commented, “They threw chairs, glasses and bottles at us. We had families and children with us. It was a very, very

Hapoel Holon Chairman Eitan Lanciano called on Foreign Minister Yair Lapid for support. “For several days now, Israeli fans who have come to a sporting event have been suffering from anti-Semitism by pro-Palestinian elements in Bilbao,” he said. Lanciano added, “Every meeting with Israelis devolves into expletives accompanied by flying objects.” MK Yuli Edelstein commented, “I am appalled by the manifestations of violence suffered by Hapoel Holon fans from the gangs of Palestinian terrorists in Bilbao. It is only appropriate for the Spanish government and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to take action on the issue.”

60,000 tickets sold for Meron BY DAVID SAFFER

Over 60,000 tickets have been sold to orthodox pilgrims wishing to visit to Meron on Lag B’Omer next week (May 18-19). Numbers have been strictly limited. An estimated 100,000 orthodox pilgrims were celebrating the festival at the historic resting place of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai last year when the worst civilian disaster in the State of Israel’s history occurred. During the ceremony, tragedy unfolded in a narrow tunnel, 45 pilgrims died, 100 were injured. “There were those who called not to hold an event this year,” said Meron project manager Tzviki Tessler said. “But we thought otherwise. There’s a large public for whom it’s important. At the same time, we won’t be able to satisfy everyone’s wishes.” Tickets sold out within hours of becoming available. Availability was for visitors traveling by public transportation, in private shuttles and private cars. Arrival at the Meron site is limited to buses and designated shuttles. Ticket holders can only stay for a limited period of time in accordance with the type of ticket. No stalls or food distribution will be allowed at the site on Lag B’omer. Food distribution will be permitted at the entrance to the Meron moshav. No tents will be allowed around the tzion.

Celebrating Lag B’Omer in Meron, 2018

Planning for the event has been extensive after the tragedy 12 months ago. There will be one hadlakah over Lag B’Omer lit by the Boyaner Rebbe. Last year there were 20 hadlakos at Meron. At the end of Lag B’Omer a memorial ceremony and siyum Mishnayos is scheduled to take place for those that died in accordance with Chareidi kahal customs. The Israeli government has approved

The Anti-Defamation League has created a new research arm. The ADL Centre for Antisemitism Research will develop investigations through an applied research network. New initiatives will measure, test and identify the fight against antisemitism. The centre will be led by ADL Vice President Matt Williams, whom recently served as founding director of the Centre for Communal Research at the Orthodox Union. Williams previously served as managing director of the Berman Jewish Policy Archive. ADL has studied antisemitism in society through surveys examining antisemitic attitudes, historical tropes and counting incidents for decades. It will build on this research by applying the latest scholarly techniques and research into modern-day antisemitism. “Antisemitism has remarkable staying power, we cannot fight this unique hatred effectively without understanding its underpinnings and modern variants,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO. “Our

new centre seeks to apply best-in-class research and scholarship to deepen our understanding of both the root causes of antisemitism and the most effective tools to combat it, whether it manifests as world domination conspiracies, Holocaust denial or anti-Zionism.” The centre will carry out research on interdependent tracks by sponsoring fellowships, empirical research, publications and workshops. It will also build an evidence base to identify which interventions against antisemitism work most effectively. The centre will offer grants to programs, organisations and researchers. It will also set up forums, collective development and assess the efficacy of interventions. “We are trying to get at a deeper understanding of the causes, manifestations and evolution of antisemitism,” said Williams. “Our research will be laser focused on getting to these root causes of antisemitism and identifying which interventions are the most effective for combating it.” ADL acknowledges individual, corporate and foundation support.

Israel set for “new war on terror” BY DAVID SAFFER

Israel is embarking on a new ‘war on terror’ in the wake of 19 Israelis being murdered in six terror attacks in recent weeks. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced Sunday his government is setting up a “national guard” to fight terrorism at his weekly cabinet meeting. The National Security Council and Public Security Ministry will present a proposal this month. The latest deadly incident saw three Israelis killed in an axe attack in Elad last Thursday on Yom Ha’atzmaut. Security forces arrested Palestinian terrorists As’sad al-Rafai, 19, and Emad Subhi Abu Shqeir, 20, suspected of murdering Yonatan Havakuk, Boaz Gol, and Oren Ben Yiftah of Lod, following a 60-hour manhunt. Both assailants are from Rumana near Jenin in the West Bank, they were found in a wooded area outside Elad. According to police, the axe used in the attack was recovered. The latest atrocity saw four people also wounded in the axe and knife attack. “We said that we would apprehend the terrorists and we have done so,” said Bennett, who commended the ISA, Israel Police and IDF for the successful operation. “Capturing the murderers is not enough. We are at the start of a new stage in the war on terrorism. Those who incite cannot rest easy. The supreme mission of the Government of Israel is to restore personal security to the citizens of Israel.” Bennett added, “The highest-priority task for the Israeli government is to restore personal security to the citizens of Israel.” Regarding the establishment of a national guard, Bennett added, “The urgent need to strengthen the personal security of the citizens of Israel was born a year ago during the events of Operation Guardians of the Walls, mainly in the mixed cities, and it is more urgent than ever in the current wave of terrorism. Time and time again, we see the difference between incidents in which there was a responsible armed civilian in the area and those in which there was not. The need is great, especially in the ultra-orthodox cities, in which fewer people carry weapons. We are taking action. “The plan will be based on Border Police units, along with the mobilisation of trained units of volunteers and reservists, who together will be defined as a national guard. They will be activated in emergencies and disturbances, and in routine times as well, as necessary.” Bennett clarified that there was no political consideration regarding the ‘war on terrorism’. “All decisions regarding the Temple Mount in Jerusalem will be made by the Government of Israel, which is sovereign in the city, without any extraneous considerations whatsoever,” he explained. “We certainly reject any foreign involvement in the decisions of the Government of Israel. Israel will continue to respect worshippers of all faiths in Jerusalem. This is what we have done and this is what we will do.” Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai praised

He stated, “Every terrorist must know that Israel’s reach is long and we will find anyone who will harm the citizens of the Jewish State. We are determined to continue fighting terror, and I thank all the security personnel who went through sleepless nights in order to capture the terrorists.” Hundreds of mourners attended the funerals of Havakuk, 44, and Boaz Gol, 49. Havakuk was buried in Yarkon Cemetery in Petah Tikva, Gol was laid to rest in Jerusalem’s Har HaMenuchot Cemetery. Ben Yiftah was buried in Lod. Father of five Havakuk happened to pass at the scene of the attack and fought off an attacker before being killed. His six-yearold escaped from the scene. Gol also had five children and was a car mechanic. He was traveling to a Torah lesson when killed. Yiftach, a shuttle driver, died in his car, he had six children. Israeli leaders attended the funerals. Global reaction was swift following the Elad attack. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated, “We vehemently condemn the terrorist attack in Elad, Israel, which killed at least three and wounded many others. This was a horrific attack targeting innocent men and women, and was particularly heinous coming as Israel celebrated its Independence Day. Our hearts are with the victims and loved ones of those killed, and we wish those injured a speedy recovery. We remain in close contact with our Israeli friends and

partners and stand firmly with them in the face of this attack.” World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder released a statement. “Terror has struck at the heart of Israeli society yet again,” he said. “This latest attack, which comes on the heels of Yom Ha’atzmaut is a stark reminder that even in times of joy the people of Israel can never afford to drop their guard.” He added, “To those looking on from around the world, don’t allow yourselves to accept this as the price for residing in the world’s only Jewish State. No one should be forced to live in fear that danger lurks around the corner. I call on the international community and all Arab leaders to condemn this horrific act of violence and the hate that inspires it in the strongest possible terms.” Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis, stated, “A brutal terrorist attack struck the Israeli city of Elad. A truly horrific crime. May Jewish people be able to go about their everyday lives in only safety and security.” Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, condemned the attack and said it was “deplorable” that Hamas and others glorify and encourage attacks as it undermines a peaceful future for both Palestinians and Israelis. “Appalled by another terror attack in Israel, targeting innocent people as they celebrate their Independence Day,” British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss tweeted. UK Ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan, tweeted, “The UK stands with Israel against

terrorism.” “This kind of cowardly violence will never win!” EU Ambassador to Israel Dimiter Tzantchev wrote. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas blasted the attack. “The killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians only leads to a further deterioration of the situation at a time when we all strive to achieve stability and prevent escalation,” he said. Abbas added, “The cycle of violence confirms that permanent, comprehensive and just peace is the shortest and sound way to provide security and stability for the Palestinian and Israeli peoples and the peoples of the region.” Following the Elad killings Bennett met with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, Defence Minister Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi and heads of Israel’s security and intelligence agencies. Terror-related incidents subsequently took place after Elad including a Border Policeman wounded after a stabbing incident at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. The attacker was killed. A Palestinian teenage Hamas member armed with a knife was shot and killed in Tekoa. In related news, the closure imposed on the West Bank last week has been lifted, except in Roumana as Elad investigations continue. The Erez crossing in the Gaza Strip remains closed. Israel Police is also launching an operation to deal with Palestinians who enter Israel illegally.

Israel and UAE $100m moon shot in 2024

A privately funded Israeli space company has signed a historic the $100m international agreement with the United Arab Emirates to fly to the Moon. The SpaceIL Beresheet 2 mission is among various proposed space missions and follows the historic Abraham Accords signed in 2020 to bolster relations between the nations. The mission follows Israel’s initial Beresheet attempt to reach the moon in 2019. The spacecraft crash landed. “This is the first scientific-technological project to create a common history for the two peoples, the flags of Israel and the Emirates on the moon”, a SpaceIL statement said. “It is about creating a model for cooperation between the two peoples in many aspects, technological, scientific and educational, which will deepen the connection between the countries and serve as inspiration for further cooperation between Israel and all Arab countries.” “SpaceIL has committed itself to promoting science and science education at the regional and global levels while also contributing to the processes of normalisation and regional peace through collaborations with peace-loving and space-seeking countries,” Beresheet CEO Shimon Sarid added launch of the smallest aircraft. The plan is at the signing ceremony. We are pleased to keep one of the orbiters in Space for five to cooperate with the UAE Space Agency, years as a platform for educational activities, hand in hand with the (Israeli) Ministry of enabling scientific research to continue. Lufthansa apology Lufthansa has apologised after orthodox passengers were not allowed to board a flight from Frankfurt to Budapest due to mask violations last week. The incident on May 4th reportedly took place when the group hoped to visit the resting place of Reb Shayale in Kerestir. According to witnesses, one or two passengers refused to follow measures. An argument with crew followed. The German airline in a statement regrets the “circumstances” to exclude passengers from LH 1334 flight. The airline is reviewing the facts. “We regret that the large group was denied boarding rather than limiting it to the non-compliant guests,” noted the airline. “We apologise to all the passengers unable to travel on this flight, not only for the inconvenience, but also for the offense caused and personal impact.” “Lufthansa and its employees stand behind the goal of connecting people and cultures worldwide,” the airline added. “Diversity and equal opportunity are core values for our company and our corporate culture. What transpired is not consistent with Lufthansa’s policies or values. We have zero tolerance for racism, antisemitism and discrimination of any type.” The airline has not confirmed if employees responsible for antisemitism displayed in targeting Jewish passengers were sacked.

OPINION

Easy or difficult? OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

I have been practicing law for over 25 years and whilst the core legislation is certainly not exciting, what can happen when disputes arise can be. Even then, the time that cases take to come to court and the complexities of the arguments still result in most observers losing interest. In November 2014 Leicester City Council passed a boycott motion, the key elements of which were: “Leicester City Council recognises the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and free from incursion, but condemns the Government of Israel for its continuing illegal occupation of Palestine’s East Jerusalem and the West Bank; for its continuing blockade of Gaza; and the illegal appropriation of land in the West Bank and settlement buildings. Therefore, Leicester City Council resolves, insofar as legal considerations allow, to boycott any produce originating

from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank until such time as it complies with international law and withdraws from Palestinian Occupied territories.” What followed was a court action brought by my firm on behalf of Jewish Human Rights Watch which lasted from the formal claim being made in August 2015, to trial in May 2016 and finally the Court of Appeal in June 2018. The council had maintained that they were entitled to pass what they called non-binding resolutions since they did not amount to a formal decision. The Court of Appeal made it clear that this was not possible. Although ultimately the decision of the council was not struck down, the issue over non-binding resolutions has meant that there have been very few boycott motions passed by local councils since then. This has now been reinforced in the announcement in the Queen’s Speech yesterday that legislation will be enacted in the form of the Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions Bill which will stop public bodies imposing their own boycotts on foreign countries. This is a huge step

and predicably the anti-Israel lobby are screaming foul, which in empirical terms gives a good indication that this is good news. So, back to the beginning, how does this long court battle and even longer wait for legislation meet even the interesting threshold let alone the exciting one? Simply put, it prevents the Israel haters from even trying to bring motions in local councils. The amount of bad will created as a result of these motions is enormous and what is worse is that they allow the anti-Israel message to proliferate beyond the council chamber into local political parties. There is a vital need to recognise that hatred of Israel is a long-term affair. It has permeated into trades unions, universities, and local councils. If councillors will be prevented from promoting anti-Israel hatred (at least via motions) this amounts to a significant victory in the fight for common sense. What is also clear is that shouting at the Israel haters is not going to work. Those screaming for sanctions should be seen for what they are, bigoted individuals who have no

interest in democracy or fairness and are just driven by hatred. We need to make these people irrelevant. Instead of arguing with them, we should reach out to the wider community, spread the word about Israel and allow them to understand that the Israel haters have little or nothing to add. Ordinary companies and people need to appreciate that In many ways, Israel is a country like any other, with its own challenges and successes and should be judged on that basis. It is this way, by engaging with the winder community that we will be far more successful that just shouting back at those who hate us. In other words, ignore the shrill voices and speak to the people who matter.

Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Lead dK After this uneventful auction, West led the king of diamonds. Declarer took this with the ace of diamonds, unblocked the king of clubs and then led a diamond, taken by West with the queen. At trick four, West played the ten of diamonds. As East had signalled that he had started with a doubleton in the suit, declarer threw the four of spades from the dummy, there being no advantage in ruffing. After East discarded a club, West exited with the queen of clubs. Declarer called for dummy’s ace of clubs. This was ruffed by East and overruffed by declarer who then played the king of spades. West took this with his ace of spades and exited with the nine of clubs. East threw a spade and declarer ruffed low. Next, he ruffed a spade, crossed back to hand with a trump and ruffed his remaining spade. All that remained was to ruff a club back to hand and play trumps from the top. Declarer made six trumps, two spade ruffs, the ace of diamonds and a club for a total of ten tricks. THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Mental Health Awareness Week

Shelanu welcomes 650 people to Yom Haatzmaut Fun Day in the park

Residents and staff at Jewish Care’s Jack Gardner House for people with mental health needs are marking Mental Health Awareness Week

Shelanu Yom Haatzmaut 2022

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and residents at Jewish Care’s Sidney Corob House and Jack Gardner House homes for people with mental health needs will be marking the week together.

The theme this year is loneliness and the residents will participate in a series of workshops together including creative writing, arts and drama workshops to celebrate positivity.

Shelanu, a member of the Jewish Futures family of organisations set up to connect the Israeli community living in London, hosted a Yom Haatzmaut party on Sunday 8th May in a park in Finchley to celebrate the 74th Anniversary of the declaration of independence for the State of Israel. Shelanu’s event aimed to recreate the atmosphere and festivities of the annual Yom Haatzmaut celebrations in HaYarkon Park in Tel Aviv, bringing a taste of home to the Israeli community living in London. The Yom Haatzmaut Fun Day was Shelanu’s largest event to date, entertaining 650 people of all ages. Shelanu entertained the crowd with bouncy castles, an impressive helter skelter slide, sumo wrestling inflatables, balloon modelling, a DJ, BBQ and delicious treats of candyfloss and popcorn.

Ari Rotenberg, Director of Shelanu, said: “Yom Haatzmaut is one of the key dates in every Israeli’s calendar, and to have 650 people come to join us to celebrate was truly amazing. There was something for everyone and the weather was perfect. We hope to host many more successful events in the future for the Israeli community living in London. With huge thanks to CST and Hatzola NW for facilitating this event and making it possible for everyone in attendance to celebrate in a safe space. We are very lucky to work together with some amazing communal organisations to enable these largescale events. Shelanu relies on members of the community to help facilitate events like these, so a huge thank you to all those who showed their support yesterday.”

The Manchester Kehilla was invited to a reception in aid of Keren Hashviis on Monday evening in the Ateres Rochel Hall in Ohel Torah. Attendees heard first hand accounts by Israeli farmer, Reb Yosef Omer and could receive a Brocha from him.

Aish UK raises £2.5 million in 30 hours! Aish UK raised an incredible £2.5 million in 30 hours in their causematch campaign over Sunday 8th to Monday 9th May. With the help of 171 fundraising teams, together with a group of generous benefactors who committed to double every donation received, Aish UK was able to reach its unbelievable target of £2.2 million and then went further to raise an extra £300,000 in the bonus round. 4520 individual donations were made during the campaign, including a very generous single donations of £30,000 which was also doubled by the matchers. Aish UK has been connecting young Jews to their culture, heritage and other Jews for almost three decades, and even though the last two years presented it with new challenges, Aish UK in turn created new opportunities. For the last two years, Aish UK has used its online platforms to provide world class education, connecting people to their Judaism virtually, and now, with the help of the much-needed funds raised in this campaign, Aish UK is pledging to redouble its efforts and provide stellar, in-person education and experiences, social events and world class trips for young Jews across the UK, alongside those virtual connections. This essential fundraising campaign was spearheaded by Aish UK’s Chief Executive, Rabbi Naftali Schiff, together with the Aish UK teams in both London and Manchester. For 30 hours, all 171 teams hit the phones for Aish UK’s biggest fundraiser of the year,

Left to right: Lee Jacobs, Lori Coren, Rabbi Shmuel Kott, Rabbi Gideon Goldwater, Rabbi Dovid Lichtig, Rabbi Naftali Schiff, Rabbi Daniel Rowe

with Aish UK pledging to double its efforts in its work within 27 schools, 19 universities and 22 communities nationwide, connecting thousands of young Jews with others and most importantly with their Judaism. Rabbi Naftali Schiff, CEO of Aish UK said; “Over the last three decades tens of thousands of lives in this country have been impacted by the work of Aish UK. As we look to the future, this campaign will enable Aish UK to double down on our efforts to double the in-person Jewish connections

we form across schools, campuses and communities nationwide. Thank you to every single person who generously supported this campaign and thereby ensuring Aish UK can continue our work creating connections.” Rabbi Daniel Rowe, Senior Educator of Aish UK said: “Aish UK isn’t there to build Aish, it’s there to build up everyone else. We are there to be the engine that drives the young Jewish revolution and raising these vital funds gives us the ability to do that.”

Israeli soldiers receiving their GIFT gifts

To mark Yom Ha’azmaut this year, GIFT Israel arranged for over 1,000 pupils across three schools, Harel Ramot, Mamad Gonenim and Tirosh Gilo to write gratitude cards to Israeli & lone soldiers. Hannah Cohn from GIFT Israel said “The soldiers were so touched to receive the cards from the school children and they said it gives them strength when they are tired to keep on going.” Hadassa Cowland Goldberg who gave out the thank you cards & GIFT gratitude packs to soldiers in the Maglan Unit said “The soldiers were so touched! There were around 60 soldiers; they were opening the packages and were so delighted to read the notes and receive the gifts. The things you sent in the gratitude packs were super helpful, especially the socks & snacks. The unit was involved in a dangerous

anti-terrorist mission that evening so the packs and the good wishes & support from the children came at a perfect time. GIFT Israel has been running for over 7 years. Dedicated wonder-woman Hannah Cohn single-handedly runs all the operations from food drives & lone soldier meals to cards for the elderly & Israeli soldiers. Hannah’s creativity and passion means she is constantly thinking of new ideas and ways to involve people in the community around them. When asked what she loves most about her job, Hannah responds: “For me, it’s all about finding creative opportunities for people to give using their own talents.” GIFT Israel also runs bespoke volunteering opportunities for families/friends on holiday in Israel or as part of a Bnei Mitzva trip. Ruth Gomm’s skydive

This weekend, Ruth Gomm fulfilled a lifelong ambition to do a skydive, jumping at 10,000 feet and raising funds for Jewish Care. Ruth, 67, is fundraising for Jewish Care’s Anita Dorfman House at Sandringham which is on the Stanmore/Hertfordshire borders and is where her mum, who is living with vascular dementia, is a resident. “When mum first came to live with Jewish Care, she was unhappy, stressed and wouldn’t mix with the other residents, preferring to stay in her room even to have her meals,” says Ruth. “Several years later, my mum is a different person; whilst she still has dementia, she now sits with other residents in the communal lounge, she enjoys watching TV, listening to the musical entertainment and joins in with Friday night Kiddush. “Mum is so much calmer and more relaxed and that is all down to the wonderful carers and nurses that work at Anita Dorfman House and care for mum. The patience and love shown to my mum and to all the residents, is second to none. Ruth, who lives in Stanmore, has had a long and successful career of over 40 years in residential property management, managing many celebrity’s flats and becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Residential Property Management. She also has two sons and five grandchildren, her eldest son’s children and her husband’s grandchildren. “Since I was very small, I have always wanted to jump out of an aeroplane and fly like a bird,” explains Ruth, “so a skydive was on my bucket list. Once I retired, I decided that it was time to fulfil that dream and fundraising is my way of saying a huge thank you to the staff for caring and looking after her. I hope to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful cause which is

very close to my heart.” Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement, Adam Overlander-Kaye says, “I’d like to congratulate Ruth on her skydive and thank her for supporting Jewish Care. We are absolutely delighted that Ruth has decided to take on this incredible challenge to raise funds for Jewish Care’s Anita Dorfman House at Sandringham in gratitude for the care and support that her mother receives from the staff at the home.” After Ruth’s skydive, she said, “We flew to 10,000 feet and I was first to jump with my instructor, Kevin. The next six minutes as scary, amazing, overwhelming and noisy all at the same time. Having nothing beneath me except clouds was incredible and we were freefalling through the clouds down to a height of approximately 3,000 feet. Kevin pulled the parachute cords and they were twisted so we had to pirouette to untangle them, but then we started to drift and float down. It was totally quiet and still, the air felt so clear and beautiful. I started to relax and really enjoy myself, feeling weightless and calm. “I landed feeling very relieved and I am thrilled to have raised over £1200 so far, for Anita Dorfman House where my mum lives. A huge thank you to all my family and friends who have kindly and generously donated.” You can still support Ruth’s skydive by donating at justgiving.com/fundraising/ flyinghighruthie Dementia Awareness Week is on 15-22 May 2022. for Ohel Sarah and in doing so took part in a nationwide sponsored walk aimed at bringing Israel closer. As Debbie Azugury, from Sinai Jewish Primary school said: “We teach our children the importance of giving tzedakah as well as demonstrating chessed, kindness to others. We model the notion of generosity and sharing - even in a small way - from the start of every child’s educational journey. Yorn Ha’atzmaut is the perfect time to express our love, support and connection to the people of Israel and we are proud to support Ohel Sarah. By uniting with Jewish schools across the UK in fundraising we can make a real difference to the lives of children with special needs in Israel.” All money raised will go towards a new musical interactive playground for the children in Ohel Sarah’s Wohl School in Israel which looks after children with severe disabilities. Ohel Sarah has been caring for the special needs population in Israel for over 40 years. It provides a home for life for over 650 adults and children with learning and physical disabilities. Students learn life skills in Ohel Sarah’s schools, housing and employment centres, which increase their confidence, independence and well-being. Wes Streeting MP visits LSJS launches exciting new one year programme Magen David Adom in Israel for young professionals LSJS is excited to announce a new programme for young professionals who are looking for high-quality Jewish learning that is authentic, big-picture, and infused by the worldview of Rabbi Sacks z’l. In 1978, Rabbi Sacks devised a course for students, which aimed to introduce them to the main themes and challenges of Jewish faith, practice, theology, and philosophy. Using this as a springboard, LSJS has updated and re-imagined this course for 2022. What does it mean to live a meaningful Jewish life today? How can we make sense of the Torah’s values and principles in our modern reality? The programme is aimed at engaged, inquisitive and aspirational young professionals who are passionate about Jewish learning. The group will have access to expert teachers, receive mentoring, an allowance for Jewish books, free access to LSJS events and much more. Michael Rainsbury, LSJS head of Adult Education, said “there are many people who are looking for Jewish learning that is authentic, relevant, open-minded and big-picture. This prestigious fellowship will bring together a cohort of fellows and expert teachers who are themselves students of Rabbi Sacks’

teachings, in an exciting collaboration that will lead to great things.” With the generosity of an anonymous donor this course has been sponsored enabling a select group of students the opportunity to learn for free with expert educators from the UK and abroad, including Rabbi Sacks’ closest students. Sessions covered during the year include From texts to decisions: How does Jewish law work?, How can we have a meaningful prayer experience?, Rabbi Sacks’ vision of inclusivist, centrist Orthodoxy and Ethics of social media, medical issues, AI and business – for a full breakdown on the sessions please visit www.lsjs.ac.uk Joanne Greenaway, LSJS Chief Executive, said “we are delighted to launch this course and to be using our former President’s original curriculum as the basis for what will be a very special year of learning for a group of exceptional young people who will no doubt be able to share the ideas they learn and go on to impact the community and beyond.” To find out more about The Rabbi Sacks Learning Fellowship or other LSJS courses please visit www.lsjs.ac.uk or contact 0208 203 6427

Sacks Morasha celebrated Yom Haatzmaut in style!

Sacks Morasha on Yom Ha’atzmaut

Sacks Morasha pupils celebrated the 74th birthday of Israel with a fun filed day. A first event in the new playground and for the new Headteacher Mrs Barbanel who described the atmosphere in school as ‘electric’! Children had their blue and white outfits planned to perfection and the simcha dancing that erupted spontaneously in the school hall before tefilla demonstrated the true ruach and love for Israel all the pupils

embrace at Sacks Morasha. The day was filled with activities including pupils taking part in the Ohel Sara walk to Israel which was done so creatively, walking forwards and backwards, running, hopping and even balancing a ‘fallafel ball’ on a racket round the perimeter of the school. Later in the afternoon, the PTA organised a super special fete and celebrations continued well into the late afternoon. Fun was had by all!

Jubilee trees in first US forest

To mark the Queen’s Jubilee the United Synagogue is partnering with Woodland Trust to plant the first US forest in the UK. The ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ is open to US shul members and wider British Jewish community to support The Queen’s Green Canopy. Every tree will contribute to a Jewish community grove in Norfolk forest that can be visited. The charity aims to plant 37,000 trees over three years, one for every adult member of the US. Trees can be bought at £20 each through the US website then planted and maintained by Woodland Trust. There is no limit to the number of trees that can be purchased. Communities collectively buying over 750 trees will be placed in a dedicated grove. Launching the initiative, the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said, “Planting trees goes to the heart of what our Dorot projects are about. Doing so helps to safeguard our planet for future generations. This initiative provides us with a positive way to take action for the future of our children and world.” Naomi Verber, the US’s Head of Environmental Policy, said: “This project will communally honour the Queen and enable fantastic educational opportunities for our members and young people.” Trees are an ideal gift for births, birthdays, Bat and Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, anniversaries and a memorial to a loved one. she added. ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com IS IT TERROR OR RESISTANCE? Dear Rabbi Why is it always assumed that all Israelis are innocent and all Palestinians are guilty? There is guilt on both sides. I would always argue that murder in any form is wrong, but so is occupation and apartheid. Dasim Dear Dasim I am in agreement with you that murder in any form is wrong. I also think that your absurd equating of killing with “occupation” and “apartheid” suggests that while you think murder is wrong, you don’t necessarily consider the wanton killings of Israelis as murder, rather more a stand against “occupation” and “apartheid.” How dare you! I’m not sure what you mean by occupation but if you are suggesting that Israelis are occupying a land that doesn’t belong to them let me refer you to the following story: An Israeli Ambassador got up in the UN and said, “Before I begin my remarks I want to tell you a little Biblical story. As you know, upon their Exodus, Moses and the Jewish people crossed the Dead Sea. Immediately after cross, Moses himself decided to go for a little swim. He removed his clothes by the waterside and went for a brief dip. Upon his return to shore he noticed that his clothes were missing. I suggest,” said the Ambassador, “that it was the Palestinians who stole his clothes!” At which point the Palestinian representative jumped to his feet: “I object! That’s preposterous! Everyone knows that the Palestinians

weren’t even around at that time!” “Thank you,” said the Israeli Ambassador. “On that note I’d now like to make my remarks.” As for your shameful allegation of apartheid, ask yourself one simple question: Are there Arabs in the Knesset? Do Arabs make up the government? Do Arabs work freely alongside Israelis? Do Arabs living in Israel have voting rights? Seriously, enough of this gibberish and nonsense. Oh and one more thing: Do Arabs walk freely in Jewish quarters? Most certainly so. Can I, as a yarmulke clad Jew walk freely through an Arab quarter? I’ll let you answer that and then you can talk to me about apartheid. Meanwhile, it’s precisely your point of view that enables the continued perpetuation of violence in Israel with so much innocent blood being spilled.

you that Jewish education is paramount and I acknowledge the difficulty in getting into Jewish schools considering the demand. Don’t give up and keep appealing. Ultimately most kids that apply, do get in. But I think it is a lot of gobbledygook when parents rely entirely on the school for their child’s education, or dare blame the system if their child ends up in a non-Jewish school. Even were you child to go to a Jewish school, if there is no consistency between what is being taught at school and the home environment, then it is far more the parents fault when things go wrong later in life. So whatever happens on the school front, I urge you to ensure Shabbat, kosher and everything else is up to standard. Then pray a little and hope to secure that placement.

EDUCATION BEGINS AT HOME

antithetical to authentic Judaism. So if you choose to read them, proceed with caution.

Dear Norman The Apocrypha refers to books that fall outside the biblical canon, such as the Book of Maccabees, which deals with the story of Chanukah, and The Book of Ben Sira, which is a collection of Proverbs. These books, unlike the books of the Tenach, were not written with Divine inspiration and while they contain some valuable information and wisdom, some maintain that they also contain ideas that are

Dear Rabbi I know it’s been a two year hiatus but do we really still need to be celebrating Shabbat UK? Julia

Dear Rabbi How does one get their child into a Jewish school? There are too many waiting lists. I don’t think I have a chance for our three year old. Will the community take responsibility if my child goes to a non-Jewish school and then marries out one day? Joanne Dear Joanne No they won’t take responsibility! Why should they? Here’s a newsflash. The school is only a small part of the Jewish educational process. It has a lot more to do with what the child sees and experiences at home. I grant

Pirkei Avot Rabbi Yishmael the son of Rav Yose taught: One who refrains from judgement is saved from enmity, theft and false oaths. But one who is too hasty to issue halachic teachings is a fool, wicked person and haughty. On the first teaching there are three explanations offered by the Rishonim - (1) A person who refrains from judgement where there are more qualified people to do so instead. (2) One who encourages the litigants to compromise (“mediation” in contemporary society may be an exam-

In Memory of Jacqueline Curzon A’H ple of this). (3) It refers to each individual person - to avoid demanding of debtors or of being one who is indebted to others. Meaning, one should aim to pay their bills before they become a legal dispute. Court cases, even among observant Jews, can leave one side with a sour taste and therefore avoiding the need for these reduces the Dayan’s exposure to enmity. Theft is also sometimes a possible outcome of a court case, as the court may erroneously rule in favour of the wrong party. Finally, the possibility of a

false oath is also present during a court case, as one side may end up needing to take an unnecessary oath or worse... The Mishna concludes with the opposite of one who refrains from judgement - one who has no qualms preaching not thought-out Halachic rulings is not only a fool, (because one who is unlearned and thinks themselves as wise is a fool), they are also wicked, for they are misleading people and they are also arrogant, for they feel too confident to render Halachic rulings without the due process required.

Weekly Dvar Torah F R O M E R E TZ Y I S R A E L

Iyar – A Month Like No Other BY RABBI DORON PEREZ

Iyar is the only month where the religious experience today is the opposite of what it was designated to be in Biblical times. Iyar in the Torah was designated as a month of total anticipation and elation as we count up to the receiving of the Torah. The Sefer HaChinuch tells us that each day we count signifies a step of growing excitement as we prepare to re-experience our rendezvous with Divine revelation. Yet, Jewish experience in the 2nd century changed all this, and it is now primarily a time of pain, tragedy and mourning. The sudden and tragic death of the 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva, which happened predominantly in the month of Iyar, sharply altered the religious and emotional experience of this month. Why did this particular tragedy, as opposed to so many other tragic massacres, evoke a time of collective mourning for

future generations? Undoubtedly, the death of such a large quantity and quality of Talmudic scholars effectively resulted in the decimation of Torah learning in Judea – an enormous tragedy in and of itself. But there is a twist in the plot. Although the Talmud mentions that they died of a disease called ‫א ְס ָּכ ָרה‬, ַ perhaps diphtheria, Rav Shreira Gaon maintains that they died as a result of ‫ – ְׁש ָמד‬a religious war. This means that they died during the Bar Kochba rebellion, as this was the only religious war at that time. Not sickness alone, therefore, caused this destruction but rather their death at the hands of the Romans. Understanding the depth of the tragic failure of the Bar Kochba rebellion is crucial to understanding the depth of the loss and mourning that ensued. The fall of Beitar and the vanquishing of the rebellion is one of the greatest tragedies of Jewish history. The Rambam goes

as far as to say that this loss was as tragic as the day of the destruction of the Temple itself. Why? Because of both the unparalleled loss in human terms as well as the devastating impact of these events on the national psyche. Historians at that time write that, in terms of human loss, the Bar Kochba rebellion was even more tragic quantitatively than in the Churban of Yerushalayim 65 years prior. An additional element is that while many were killed and exiled, and Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed, the vast majority of Jews remained in Judea, building thriving communities with the Sanhedrin relocating to Yavneh. There was still hope for an imminent rebuilding of Jerusalem, just as it had been rebuilt following the previous 70-year Babylonian exile. Indeed, this was the aim and hope of Bar Kochba’s rebellion, supported by Rabbi Akiva. However, with the horrific

fall of Beitar, a new period in history was ushered in. Judea was laid waste, the national infrastructure was destroyed and hope for imminent return was lost. This exile would be longer. Iyar, the great month of spiritual exhilaration, was turned into a darker time of mourning for the destruction of the Torah world, and the loss of hope of the return to Jerusalem. In the modern era, the month of Iyar has begun to be redeemed! In addition to Lag BaOmer on the 18th of Iyar, we have two new modern miracle days of exhilaration – both signifying the beginning of redemption. The 5th of Iyar – the miraculous establishment of the State of Israel, and the 28th of Iyar – the liberation of the Old City of holy Jerusalem. Baruch Hashem, Iyar is slowly returning to its former glory from days of mourning of ‘Sefira’ to days of ‘Sefirat HaOmer’ – the anticipation with exhilaration of the wheat offerings in the Temple and the collective national acceptance of our treasured Torah. Rabbi Doron Perez is the Executive Chairman of World Mizrachi.

Emor

Sidra Summary offerings in the Temple; however, he may still eat from the offerings. A Kohen who is ritually impure (tamei) can neither bring nor eat an offering until he is pure (tahor). The laws of terumah, the first crop tithe given to the Kohanim, are stated. Whilst this tithe should not be eaten by a non-Kohen, a Kohen’s wife and his Cana’anite servant are permitted to eat it.

“These are the appointed festivals of G-d, the holy seasons which you shall fix in their appropriate time.” (Vayikra 23:4)

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 22:17-33

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – VAYIKRA 21:1-15

G-d instructs Moshe to tell the Kohanim not to come into contact with a corpse, with the exception of when burying specific close relatives. They are not allowed to shave their heads or wound themselves during a mourning period (Rashi). There are restrictions on whom Kohanim can marry. There is a mitzvah to show Kohanim specific forms of respect (Rashi). A Kohen Gadol is not allowed to bury a close relative, nor marry a widow.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 21:16-22:16

Specific types of physical blemishes on a Kohen disqualify him from bringing

Offerings brought to the Temple must be free of certain blemishes which disqualify them. An animal cannot be brought as an offering until it is at least eight days old. Offerings have to be eaten within a certain time. There is a mitzvah to sanctify G-d’s Name.

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 23:1-23:22

Laws of Shabbat and the festivals are listed. On Pesach, which lasts seven days, we eat matzot. The first and last days are Yom Tov, on which we refrain from specific prohibited activity (melacha). On the second day of Pesach, the barley Omer offering is brought. There is a mitzvah to count 49 days from 16 Nissan (the second night of Pesach) until the night before Shavuot. On Shavuot itself, the double bread wheat offering (shtei ha’lechem) is brought and melacha is forbidden.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 23:23-32

Rosh Hashanah is called ‘a day of shofar blasts’. Yom Kippur is a day of fasting. On these days, melacha is also forbidden, but the punishment for doing melacha on Yom Kippur is more severe. 6th Aliya (Shishi) – 23:33-44 On Succot we bring the four species (arba’a minim) and dwell in temporary booths (succot). The seven days of Succot are followed by Shemini Atzeret. On the first day of Succot and on Shemini Atzeret, we refrain from melacha.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 24:1-23

Moshe is told by G-d to instruct the people to bring pure olive oil for the daily

Torah from Israel The Changing Tides of the Omer

BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

Jews experience time very deeply. Different stages of our calendar are suited for different religious experiences. During the forty days leading up to Yom Kippur, Hashem is available for human penitence, as He extends mercy to errant children. The month of Av witnessed horrible tragedies during the mikdash era. Sensing that that this overlap of tragedies wasn’t incidental, our sages instituted a period of national grieving. As we navigate history, we aren’t just passive subjects of time, but sometimes, we can “flip the script”. Haman assumed that he could install Adar as a month of genocide and murder, but valiantly, we changed the narrative, converting this month into a celebration. Likewise, Zecharya, the prophet predicts a Messianic conversion of Av from sorrow to festival. We have the capacity to change the dynamics of time. The Jewish calendar is historically fluid. We interact most profoundly with our calendar during the counting of the Omer. During this period, we actively mark days and weeks, as we voyage from Pesach to Shavuot. Three epic events occurred during this period, creating a kaleidoscope of Jewish history. It is crucial that our Omer incorporate all three historical layers.

THE MARCH TO SINAI

Though we were liberated on Pesach, we clearly weren’t prepared for our encounter with monotheism. We had suffered a long and debilitating slavery, which hollowed out our faith and shuttered our imaginations. Multiple events during the seven intervening weeks leading up to Sinai stimulated our national maturation process. We witnessed spectacular miracles at the sea, received abundant supplies of heavenly food, gulped cold

water drawn from boulders, triumphed over fierce armies of Amalek, and hosted a princely dignitary from Midyan. These milestones transformed us from a band of slaves into a nation of priests. Each year we relive that journey, as we rally to our own embrace of divine will. Receiving the word of Hashem requires introspection and self-improvement. The omer counting is a reenactment of that voyage. Our personal Omer transformation occurs against an agricultural backdrop. Though early-ripening barley matures by Pesach, most other crops and fruits require more time and development. On Pesach an initial korban is offered from “new barely”, but full usage of the new crops is still weeks away. During this interval we count down toward the Shavuot and toward the full maturation of crops. On Shavuot when our counting concludes, a higher-grade korban is offered from fully matured wheat. Agriculture mirrors religion. Though we achieved peoplehood on Pesach, our national identity is merely the platform upon which full religious identity is constructed seven weeks later. Counting omer is an annual religious journey.

WHEN TRAGEDY STRUCK… TWICE

About 1300 years after Sinai our entire world collapsed. Having betrayed the covenant at Sinai, we were exiled from our land and expelled from our mikdash. Would this be a quick exile followed by a speedy return, as the first seventy-year exile had been? Unfortunately, it soon became evident that this would be a very different process, and that a long historical odyssey had begun. The sudden and unfathomable death of 24,000 Torah scholars during the Omer punctuated this hard truth. The gemara attributes their tragic death to their mistreatment

of one another but, still, so much death in so short a period had broader connotations. After these deaths, it was now clear that history was in flux. It was now clear that Hashem was no longer satisfied with his people. It was now clear that this exile would be more ferocious than the first one. Death during the Omer was a signal of hard times ahead. The Omer period, which had once been a march to Sinai, now became a milepost on our way out of the land of Israel, and into the wilderness of history. About a thousand years later tragedy struck again. Though we had been scattered across the globe, we had constructed viable Jewish communities in an Arab world, which was, by and large, friendly toward us. Slowly we started inhabiting Christian Europe, seeking additional host countries. In 1096, during the Omer, we were dealt a harsh and deadly lesson. Beginning with the Crusade of that year, Christian Europe unleashed a millennia of unabated violence toward the Jews. The massacre of thousands of Jews during that Omer was just the start of a thousand years of pogroms, blood libels, inquisitions, deportations and finally, attempted genocide during the Holocaust. Evidently, our exile would not just be lengthy, but grisly and brutal. A thousand years after the death of Rebbi Akiva’s students and halfway through our odyssey, the Omer became a second milepost of exile. The Omer was transformed by these dual and overlapping historical tragedies into a period of sorrow and national mourning.

HISTORICAL RENEWAL

The world has now shifted, we have returned to our homeland and we have opened the door to the fourth and final phase of history. And, we have flipped the script upon this sad and gloomy period. Twice during the modern Omer period, we were privileged to divine reconciliation and to the soft caress of Hashem. In 1948, during the incipient stages of the Omer, we received statehood. Only nineteen years later, toward the end of the Omer, the world was overhauled in a mere six days, as we were restored to our capital city and to the hinterland of Jewish history. Shir Hashirim, the book of Jewish history, describes the spring revival of nature and the merry chirping of the birds throughout our land- kol hator nishma b’artzeinu. The birds are chirping because redemption is at hand. An Omer period that had been sullen and tragic has now become illuminated with the glow of our national resurrection. The Omer period has undergone dramatic historical shifts. From a march to Sinai to signposts of exile, to harbingers of redemption. Historical sensitivity demands that we weave all three into one fabric of Jewish identity.

Parshat Emor:

Is Yom Tov about the Seasons or History? BY GAVRIEL COHN

Our Festivals, discussed in this week’s sedra, are composed of a curious combination of two entirely distinct aspects. They are a blend of both our national history and of the agricultural present. Pesach occurs during the spring, when the barley ripens. Yet Pesach, of course, also marks our dramatic exodus from Egypt. Shavuot celebrates the wheat harvest, the last of the grains to ripen and be reaped, but also of when we were given the Torah at Mount Sinai. Sukkot is the holiday of the ingathering of the fruits, “when you gather in the crops of the Land.” Yet Sukkot also commemorates how God housed “the Jewish people in booths when he took them out of Egypt” and through the desert. Why do our Festivals contain this dual mixture? What is the relationship between the seasons and Jewish history, between working the land and commemorating what God did for our nation? Perhaps God intended to superimpose these religious events onto what were

Emor RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE

LINEAGE

The sidra begins, “Say to the kohanim the descendants of Aaron”. The definition of the kohanim as descending from Aaron seems too obvious to need iteration. We know who they are! We know their lineage! Why specify the obvious? Three answers: First, everyone should remember their origin; no-one is without a past. Second, remembering your lineage will guard you from sin: in the Torah, Joseph had a mental image of his father and recognised that he could not now commit a transgression. Third, if you have lineage you should make yourself worthy of it: your ancestors live in you. A great Jewish author was the child of a woman who refused to have an abortion but died in childbirth, and in later years the child’s father said to his son, “Be worthy of her sacrifice!” Yes, sometimes you wish you could throw off your ancestors and start with a clean slate, but life doesn’t allow that

already, by nature, agricultural days of happiness and harvest in order to redirect the Jewish People’s joy to serving God, so that they would not be blindly rejoicing in their own bounty and success. These days of agricultural plenty were transformed into events and days of focusing on what God had done for his people, and not just on the produce of that year’s yield. Indeed, countless cultures and countries celebrate the seasons and have established holidays; arguably, what makes Judaism unique is that our holidays are anchored in Monotheism, on appreciating the Divine (based on Bechor Shor and Sefer Emet le’Yaakov). Such may be one answer. However, there is perhaps another way of understanding why our festivals are composed of these two parts, agricultural and historical. Springtime, the harvest, and the ingathering of the crops are, in a way, very personal, self-absorbed times. Everyone is busy working their own fields and surveying their crops, happy and proud of what they have managed to grow that season. One’s sense of brotherhood and their relationship to God could weaken; one could lose sight of others and of the divine hand involved in one’s life. Yet letting these bonds grow looser would not only be

tragic, but also a distortion of reality. Really, every farmer enjoying their successful harvest should step back and appreciate that it was only because of the miraculous journey of their ancestors, guided by God, that they have been able to come to this land in the first place. Only due to their nation long ago leaving Egypt, the kingdom of slavery, receiving the Torah, the Constitution needed to cultivate the land, and weathering the howling desert winds under divine protection could they have come to cultivate their fields in the first place. This is precisely what each farmer reminds himself of when he offers his first fruits to the Kohanim at the Temple, having to declare in the Bikkurim ceremony: “An Aramean sought to destroy my forefather, and he went down to Egypt. There he became a great nation. The Egyptians treated us cruelly and afflicted us, and we cried out to God; He saw our affliction and brought us out from Egypt with signs and with wonders. And He brought us to this place, and He gave us this Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now, behold, I have brought the first of the fruit of the ground which You, God, have given to me.” This wider, boarder appreciation, the historical component of our Festivals,

a womanly verb whilst “dabber” is more masculine.

TWO WAYS OF SPEAKING

The kohanim had the duty of making sure that the sanctuary lights burned properly (Lev. 24). The kohen gadol was in charge and had to “arrange the lamps upon the pure candlestick” (Lev. 24:4; see also Ex. 31:8). A pure candlestick? One can understand pure water, pure food, pure love, pure devotion… but a pure candlestick? The view of Rashi is that it is described like this because the metal of the candlestick was pure gold, not a strange jumble of other substances; or perhaps the word “pure” means that it had been cleaned and any residue removed. Another commentator explains that the lamps had to rest upon the candlestick itself, unsupported by chips of wood or pebbles. A good practical explanation, but if we

The verb that gives its name to the portion we read this Shabbat is “emor”, “say”. Generally the Torah uses the word “dabber”, “speak”. In English we tend to think the two words are interchangeable, but that is an unwarranted conclusion. Actually, saying is softer and gentler than speaking, which is more peremptory and authoritarian. In line with the notion of Kohelet (Chapter 4), there is a time for everything, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to rejoice and a time to lament. There is a time to say things gently and a time to speak unhesitatingly. Being gentle is loving and persuasive; being tough is unequivocal and leaves no room for misunderstanding. The rabbinic sages tell us that “emor” is

ensures that we realise how we came to have such success. In the midst of our own private agricultural success, we must remember that it is only because we are part of a nation with a remarkable story, whose journey and lives are all intertwined, that we merit to enjoy the plenty that we do. Understanding this, in turn, will allow us to look out for others and embrace our entire people, transforming this would-be private time of indulgence into one of community and chesed. As the Torah instructs us: “You shall rejoice in your Festivals, you, your son, your daughter, your manservant, your maidservant, the levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow who are within your cities... you too were a slave in Egypt... Your God will bless you in your produce and in all the work of your hands, and you will be only happy.” (For the unique “bein adam le’chaveiro” emphasis mandated during the Festivals see further: Meshech Chochmah, Parshat Emor and Rambam, Hilchot Shevitat Yom Tov, 6:18). regard the sanctuary appurtenances as symbols we notice something precious in this interpretation which we might otherwise have missed. A flame cannot burn by itself: it has to be attached to something. That “something” has to be stable in and of itself, not propped up by chips of wood or pebbles. If we remember that the Bible often tells us that Torah is light, we see that Torah, like the lights, must have a firm foundation. Once we prop the Torah up by means of, for example, superstition, it loses its intrinsic capacity to guide the minds of people who think. Maimonides is the supreme example of a Jewish philosopher who had no time for folk superstitions but was certain that there was pure (that word again!) reasonability in religious belief.

EXPERT ADVICE

FINANCIAL SERVICES (FCA) COMPLIANCE

Dear Jacob I notice that some financial services firms are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority while others are not. Should this influence my decision whether or not to use them? David Dear David When considering using any Financial Service Provider, a key consideration is whether that firm is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). (Businesses can either be Directly Authorised in their own right or may be authorised indirectly as an “Appointed Representative” of another Directly Authorised firm, which is known as the Principal Firm or Network, e.g. our sister company, Richdale Brokers and Financial Services Ltd). There are various benefits to working with an authorised firm which would make it highly recommended to only work with such businesses. These include the comfort you can take: 1. that the business has undergone a rigorous assessment of their operations by the FCA, (or by their Principal firm), prior to the business obtaining authorisation; 2. that the business must constantly adhere to strict regulatory processes to ensure the services they provide you with are appropriate, and provided in a manner which is fair, clear and not misleading; and 3. that should the business have fallen short in the quality of the service that they provided you with, you are likely to be able to refer this to the FOS and potentially seek recourse from the FSCS. This is especially important when it comes to investment funds and syndicates, where a recent proliferation in the number of scams, has made it of crucial importance that you carefully research and only work with, appropriately regulated firms. It is important to conclude by adding, that although a business which is not appropriately authorised may be committing a criminal offence if they provide you with a service which requires authorisation, it should also be noted that the specific requirements for FCA authorisation are complex, as they are very specific to the activity being performed by the business.

We start with a warning to the Kohanim to stay away from dead bodies. A kohein can only become impure for his 7 close relatives; Father, Mother, Wife, Child, Brother, unmarried Sister. Kohanim also can’t marry widows or divorcees. Korbonois have to be perfect too, no mumim – cuts, bruises etc. You’re getting close and serving the Creator and Master of the Universe and your life, show a little respect. Show some mercy too, don’t kill a mother and child on the same day. (Animal!) As Jews we represent our people, the Torah and Hashem. People look at us to see the way Hashem wants people to act. If, chas v’sholom, we do an avairah (sin) or act silly or mean or rude then people gthink that this is what happens when a person follows in the ways of Hashem. This looks bad on Hashem, it’s like we’re embarrassing Him and putting people off Hashem and Torah! Last week we learnt you can do anything to save

anothers life and if it comes to saving your own life, you MUST do the avairah. But there are three mitzvot you must die for: avoda zara (idol worship), murder, and forbidden marriage The reason is that it is a great disgrace to Hashem - a Chilul Hashem - for a Jew to cdo these avairot. When a Jew gives up his life for these three mitzvot he makes a great Kiddush Hashem - he brings honor to Hashem’s name and he is greatly rewarded in the World to come. Now let’s get festive! We actually read these next verses every festival because they talk about cheese. No, wrong verses, they talk about the festivals. Oh that’s why surprise… I geddit. A Festival is like Shabbos except we can cook and carry. There are 5 of them. Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot, Rosh Hashana andYom Kippur. The first three, Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot are called the “Shalosh Regalim.” That’s because when these Yomim Tovimcame around, people headed up to Yerushalayim to the Bait Hamikdash to offer korbanot. Regalim means feet. See you next week!

rs Aharon opened the door to the nursery and the children broke into a run. Yehudis only had eyes for the pink baby doll that was the favourite of all the girls in the class. She ran towards it determined to reach it before her friends. Just as she grabbed the doll, another hand came down and pulled hard on the other arm of the doll. Chavi had wanted the doll too and now they were both pulling at it. All around them the other children were noisily playing with other toys, but Chavi and Yehudis were only interested in the doll. “Mine!” shouted Yehudis tugging on the right arm of the doll. “No, it’s mine!” Chavi shouted back, tugging on the doll’s left arm. Back and forth they pulled, harder and harder until…rrrrrrrrriiiiiip...a loud noise filled the air. Suddenly Yehudis and Chavi were no longer tugging because in their hands they each held half a doll. The doll had been ripped in half! Mrs Aharon ran over to them. “What is going on here?” She exclaimed. Chavi and Yehudis started to cry. Mrs Aharon knelt on the floor and gave them both a hug. “What happened to the baby? Did the

Sharing Together baby break?” She asked. They both nodded sadly. “I wonder why it happened?” Chavi said in a quiet voice, “I wanted it and she wanted it, we both wanted it,” and burst into tears again. “Oh dear” Mrs Aharon looked sadly at the doll. “I’m sorry girls, I don’t think this is something we can fix.”

When they had sat down, Mrs Aharon gave them three paint pots and three paint brushes each. Chavi got red, orange and yellow; Yehudis received green, blue and purple. “I’m not giving you any water to wash your brushes,” Mrs Aharon explained. “If you would like to use a colour that someone else has, you must ask them nicely if you can use it. If they are busy using it themselves then you will have to wait until they have finished. If someone wants a colour you have and they ask nicely for it, then you should share it with them.” Yehudis started painting the sky and the grass, she had the green and blue paint and she was very happy. Then she realised she needed the yellow paint for her sun. She reached out to grab it and then remembered what her teacher had said. Yehudis stared very sadly at the yellow paint pot. Chavi looked up from the yellow and orange flower she was painting and shyly asked Yehudis if she would like the yellow paint. “Thank you” replied Yehudis, offering her the green paint so Chavi could paint the stem of her flower. Wow!” Mrs Aharon said, coming over a few minutes later to look at their pretty paintings. “Look what amazing pictures you can create when you share so nicely.”

Yehudis and Chavi were really sad. They had both just wanted to play with the doll, they didn’t want it to break! Mrs Aharon stood up and went to the large supplies cupboard. Paperweight Perspective

Volunteering BY ALAN PERRIN, TRUSTEE, THE PAPERWEIGHT TRUST

The popular poet Jenny Joseph, who died in 2018, penned “Warning”, a piece that was twice voted Britain’s Best Loved Poem. Its opening lines, familiar to many, are “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat that doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me”. The sentiments she expressed struck a chord and surprised those who read it that she composed the words not in old age, but in her 20s! The mood is one of defiance and a disregard for convention. But it also epitomises the feeling that at a certain age we have confidence to do what we would like to. Many members of the community, from all walks of life, are connected by a spirit of new discovery that, as their work-life balance changes either by design or by compulsory redundancy, that “having nothing to do” is not a leisure activity. They are not happy with this realisation.

Quite the opposite. But how to fill the gap? One answer, which I will address here is to volunteer. But volunteer for what? There is a vast choice and opportunities galore, but here I am addressing that pool of potential volunteers who need some or all of the following questions answered: 1. I have accumulated skills from business, a profession or parenthood. Are these skills transferable, and if so to what? 2. I need to feel good about the time and energy I will devote to my voluntary work. What role will provide this? 3. I want to see a measurable difference from my efforts. How can I gauge this? 4. I would like to feel I play an important part of a more complex machine – but also to have autonomy

and independence (within necessary guidelines). Where can I fit in? Let me stop you there. You have set the bar very high and any organisation that takes you on should dance for joy. But before the celebratory champagne let’s look at your qualities through the eyes of a volunteer-seeking organisation, say a local, regional or national charity. Perhaps they have some questions of you? They may be looking for a person who can demonstrate the 3 Ps: Personality, Persistence & Patience. Personality – outgoing and quietly confident. Not easily intimidated. Can display empathy and sympathy with those in straitened circumstances, but not as a mechanical exercise – no one is looking for actors. Persistence – Will you approach a

Paperweight takes up “the good fight” on behalf of 1000s of clients up and down the country.

problem with sufficient energy and enthusiasm to “see it through”, all the while navigating bureaucratic hurdles and other parties with clashing priorities? Patience – Will you understand that some processes are painstaking and the desired outcome may be some weeks or even months in coming? If you have been nodding your head in response to some or all of the above then you may wish to consider a role with Paperweight. Paperweight takes up “the good fight” on behalf of 1000s of clients up and down the country. We advocate on their behalf, we assist and sometimes we make a big noise. But the outcome is fewer sleepless nights for our clients, a clear map of where they can seek continuing help and expert knowledge of how to avoid the pitfalls of the past. You may wear purple and a mismatched red hat if you wish. And you needn’t be so old either. But as a Paperweight volunteer with a successful caseload under your belt, you will know that you have given back to the community something priceless. And for that you are entitled to feel very good indeed.
