IDF BLASTS HAMAS TARGETS AFTER REJECTING CEASEFIRE 13 MAY 2021/02 SIVAN 5781

@TheJewishWeekly 190

BY DAVID SAFFER

The Israel Defence Force has intensified air and artillery strikes on terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip after Palestinian militants fired over 1,200 missiles at central Israel and border communities this week. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israel had rejected a Hamas ceasefire proposal mediated by the Russian Foreign Ministry last night. The IDF and Shin Bet security service confirmed 16 high-ranking Hamas high command members had been killed in targeted attacks on Gaza City and Khan Yunis. According to Israeli media the current conflict will continue for a few days as Israel is determined to achieve its objectives following militants attempts to strike at the heart of the country. There have been seven fatalities in Israel at the time of going to press. Over 50 Palestinians, including 14 children, have died.

A six-year-old boy, Ido Avigail, was killed in Sderot last night when a rocket struck the family apartment. 21-year-old IDF soldier Omer Tabib was killed by a Hamas anti-tank missile striking a vehicle near the Gaza Strip yesterday afternoon. Earlier in the week, a elderly

The IDF soldier Tabib was a first sergeant who served in the 931st Battalion of the Nahal Brigade and was from Moshav Eliakim in Megiddo Regional Council in northern Israel. He was one month from completing his military service. Megiddo Regional Council Chairman Itzik Kholovsky described the incident as a “terrible disaster”. Netanyahu offered condolences and vowed to hit “with force” those responsible for the killing. Netanyahu was forced to declare a state of emergency yesterday in Lod following “widescale riots” where three synagogues, shops and cars were set alight. Police declared a night-time curfew in Lod with armed reinforcements last night after the unrest. Footage of alarming riots in Haifa, Tiberias, Jaffa and Acre was posted on social media last night.

CFI calls on Rabb to shun Durban IV

Marie blasts Hamas after BoD election win

Conservative Friends of Israel vice-chair Theresa Villiers MP has corresponded with Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab calling on the UK not to participate in Durban IV. The controversial 20th anniversary commemoration of the 2001 World Conference Against Racism is due to be held at the United Nations in September. Following up on an exchange in the House of Commons, the former Cabinet member welcomed Rabb stating that the UK would not support any “partisan or political attacks on Israel” and was “crystal clear” in our condemnation of antisemitism. Calling for a UK boycott of the event, Villiers said it was “incumbent upon the UK” to confront those who seek to espouse or endorse antisemitic views. In 2011, former Prime Minister David Cameron boycotted the Durban III conference to mark the 10th anniversary. The UK voted against the 31st December 2020 General Assembly resolution to convene Durban IV. The latest intervention came as the US, Canada and Australia confirmed they will not attend the conference. A US State Department spokesperson noted, “The United States stands with Israel and has always shared its concerns

over the Durban process’s anti-Israel sentiment, use as a forum for antisemitism, and freedom of expression issues.” A Canadian government spokesperson added that Canada was concerned that the Durban process advocates an anti-Israel sentiment and a forum for antisemitism. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison commented, “We will not associate Australia with one-sided and contentious language that singles out Israel or an event that champions such language”.

Re-elected Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl has blasted Hamas following its rocket attacks against Israeli civilian targets. Condemning Hamas for its “reprehensible and cynical barrage” of over 1200 rockets into civilian areas in Israel, Ms van der Zyl urged politicians and media to not inadvertently encourage Hamas by ignoring or downplaying its terrorist activities. The Board, JLC and UJIA subsequently issued a joint statement, noting, “We are deeply concerned and saddened by the escalation of violence and the seemingly unremittent rocket fire against Israeli civilians by Hamas in Gaza. These attacks are abhorrent and, despite the protection of the Iron Dome, have sadly already caused loss of life. Israel has the right to defend its citizens and it is the responsibility of Hamas to immediately halt all rocket fire from Gaza. “British Jews have family, friends and colleagues in Israel, and our thoughts and prayers are with them, and with all those, both Israeli and Palestinian, who are suffering. “We are working closely together to monitor the situation and provide whatever support we can to both the people of Israel and the UK Jewish community. The city of Jerusalem and its holy sites are sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians around the world. Time and again we have seen how tensions in the Middle East play out here in the UK, affecting community cohesion and community confidence. It is vital that all those with

The Northern Ireland Assembly has adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism, despite Sinn Fein’s opposition to the Democratic Unionist Party’s proposal to adopt it. The DUP motion stressed a need to tackle the “scourge of antisemitism in every aspect of our society” and called on the Assembly to adopt the definition in full. Sinn Fein attempted to pass an amendment to remove the reference to the definition, but retained similar wording without the examples. A Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson welcomed the decision by

public platforms in the UK use language responsibly to reduce rather than inflame tensions.” The announcement of Ms van der Zyl’s victory over Jonathan Neumann in the Triennial President elections by 161-125 votes came amidst growing tensions in Israel coinciding with Yom Yerushalayim. Following the announcement, she told delegates about improving plenaries, increasing deputy involvement and restoring collegiality before commenting on news from Israel. “This is a timely reminder that we are here foremost to act for our community and that includes our concern for the welfare of the State of Israel,” Ms van der Zyl said. Neumann received more votes than any unsuccessful Presidential candidate in the Board’s history. “The narrowness of the margin shows there is a strong appetite for change,” he said. Gary Mond, David Mendoza-Wolfson and Amanda Bowman were elected as Vice Presidents. Ben Crowne was elected unopposed as Treasurer.

the Assembly to adopt the IHRA definition but regretted Sinn Fein opposed the adoption resolution. “Its passage is a strong demonstration of solidarity with the Jewish community and a powerful expression of opposition to anti-Jewish racism, which has no place in Northern Ireland or any other part of the United Kingdom,” CAA noted. “We continue to call on local authorities, as well as universities and other public bodies, to adopt the definition and apply it in cases of antisemitism.” In the past, Belfast City Council rejected the adoption of the definition.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Reports of injuries concerned local leaders. In a bid for calm, council members from Lod, Acre, Haifa, Tel Aviv-Yafo and Ramla published a joint statement. “We, Jews and Arabs, members of the councils in the mixed cities of Israel, call on the mayors involved, our partners in the city councils and the entire public to do everything in their power to enable protests by members of minority groups, avoid violence and promote dialogue,” they noted. The worst escalation of terror attacks from Gaza in recent years came after days of tension in Jerusalem including clashes between police and rioters on the Temple Mount at the annual Jerusalem Day march. After the wave of rockets over the Tel Aviv area on Tuesday, Netanyahu, with Defence Minister Benny Gantz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi by his side, warned Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip would “pay a very heavy price.” Gantz said Israeli strikes were “just the beginning”. “The terror organisations were severely hurt and they will continue to get hurt because of their reckless decision to fire at the State of Israel’s territory. We will restore quiet and security, and we will do so for the long term.” President Reuven Rivlin said those who test Israel’s resilience would “discover a fist of steel”. “We will not let anyone disrupt our lives, we will not bow down our heads in the face of any danger,” he noted. ‘Operation Guardians of the Wall’ has attempted to prevent rocket fire where possible, deal a major blow to Hamas’s military wing, members and infrastructure and deliver a severe blow to Hamas’s weapons development. Amongst IDF strikes, senior Hamas leaders have been targeted and a tower block in the Rimal neighbourhood serving as headquarters for Hamas units where warnings to civilians to evacuate the building were made. IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Hidai Zilberman confirmed a large attack in the northern Gaza Strip area saw 80 planes bomb 150 targets, including 50-70 launching pits that Hamas installed in the ground. The operation neutralised three Hamas battalions’ rocket capabilities. The Iron Dome missile defense system has intercepted over 300 rockets aimed at Israel since Monday. Of the unrelenting number of rockets fired from Gaza, hundreds fell in open fields according to the IDF, around 300 failed to clear the Gaza border. An Egyptian delegation reportedly attempted to mediate between Israel and Gaza for a ceasefire. Israel rejected calls; the UN Security Council was expected to meet yesterday to discuss the growing crisis. Ben Gurion Airport was temporarily shut down due to the escalation of tensions, riots and missile attacks. A spokesperson for the Airports Authority said take-offs and landings were stopped “to allow for the country’s skies to be defended”. Israelis sheltered in bomb shelters and protected rooms as sirens and blasts were heard across Israeli cities including Tel Aviv,

Jerusalem. Ashkelon, Ashdod, Modiin and Beersheba. Ra’am party leader Mansour Abbas has cancelled negotiations with anti-Netanyahu Knesset factions on a coalition deal due to the riots. UN Middle East Peace Envoy, Tor Wennesland, said the sides were “escalating towards a full-scale war” whilst UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated grave concerns over the escalating violence. Netanyahu called for calm in Lod, imploring residents to remain at home and allow security forces to operate. He would not hesitate imposing a curfew. Declaring a state of emergency, the first time the government had used emergency measures over an Arab community since 1966, he noted in a statement, “We must return our authority to the city with an iron fist. If necessary we will enforce a lockdown on the city and on other locations.” Lod’s 77,000 population includes 47,000 Jewish Israelis and 23,000 Arab Israelis. “Lod is burning,” a police spokesman reportedly said on Tuesday. “The riots continued all night and Arab youths were determined to hurl stones and set fires.” Jewish residents in Lod reported rioters hurling rocks at windows at residential homes in the city. “All of Israel should know, this is a complete loss of control,” Lod Mayor Yair Revivo reportedly said. “Civil war has erupted in Lod.” Police forces were also deployed in Haifa, Acre and a number of Arab towns. Following the fatal Hamas attack in Rishon LeZion, Moshe Gomru, Commander, Central District ZAKA, who was at the scene noted, “This was a two-story building that received a direct hit at the front of the building. When I arrived, there was a large commotion. MDA paramedics were forced to pronounce her dead at the scene.” Motti Bukchin, ZAKA spokesperson, added, “This is the third fatal scene that ZAKA volunteers have handled during this round

of missile attacks. In the morning, ZAKA volunteers in Ashkelon treated two women who were killed in separate incidents by direct hits and in the evening, a third woman who was killed by a direct hit. This is a very difficult scene to witness, dozens of ZAKA volunteers are working now to honour the

dead, by ensuring that all human remains are removed from the scene.” The IDF targeted Hamas and Islamic Jihad weapon production sites in Gaza inside civilian areas. “The IDF is taking every precaution to avoid harm to civilians and their property but will continue to operate in Gaza as long as is necessary,” the IDF reportedly said. Netanyahu said on a visit to Wolfson Medical Center in Holon yesterday that targeted killings of Hamas officials was just “the beginning”. “We will have a security cabinet meeting later, there are serious developments,” he reportedly said. “We will respond with increasing force to attacks from Gaza.” Israel conducted attacks inside Gaza throughout Tuesday. And an IDF spokesperson stated that 480 launches had been detected from Gaza on Monday with over 200 rockets intercepted. Netanyahu addressed the nation after the wave of rockets on Tuesday. “We are in the midst of a campaign,” he said. “The IDF has made hundreds of attacks against Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza. We have targeted commanders. We have hit very many quality targets. The conclusion of the meeting is to further increase the force and pace of the attacks.” He added, “Hamas will receive blows here that it did not expect. I know that this also entails patience and a certain sacrifice on your part, citizens of Israel.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

4 NEWS  CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 Netanyahu called on Israelis to “strictly follow” the directives of IDF Home Front Command as it will save lives. He continued, “We still have a way to go and we will do so together with responsibility and full backing for the attacks that the IDF is making and will make.” Netanyahu called on leaders of the Arab public to condemn disturbances and help restore quiet. “We have given instructions that police units be reinforced with additional Border Police battalions, We will reinforce them as necessary in order to maintain law and order in the State of Israel,” he said. With rocket fire unceasing, schools and workplaces without a bomb shelter remained closed on Tuesday in communities within 40km of the Gaza border. Universities and colleges suspended on-campus learning, classes went remote by Zoom. Public bomb shelters were opened in the Tel Aviv area as Israel prepared for missiles. Limits were placed on gatherings of over 10 people outdoors and 50 indoors. Municipalities in Rishon Lezion, Bat-Yam and Holon, Rehovot and Ness Ziona also shut schools. The missile defense system has been effective as Hamas targeted Jerusalem. Gantz sanctioned the deployment of 5,000 reservist soldiers to the Southern Command, Home Front Command and Operations Directorate. The IDF also deployed anti-drone measures in the south. Throughout the week, the IDF and Netanyahu attended press briefings. Brig. Gen. Hidai Zilberman told reporters that the IDF had attacked 130 terror targets including tunnels near the border fence and Hamas’ intelligence command in the southern part of the Strip overnight on Monday. “We also hit rocket production sites, weapons depots, military posts and an Islamic Jihad training facility,” he reportedly added. “We will increase the level of attacks in the coming hours. We will not stop until we make a substantial impact on the Hamas terror group’s infrastructure.” Netanyahu warned after the Jerusalem attack that terrorist groups in Gaza had “crossed a red line.” “Israel will respond with great force. Those who attack us will pay a heavy price,” he reportedly said. “The current confrontation could last for some time. We do not want an escalation, but those who do chose to escalate will feel our might.” Gantz added, “Hamas bears the sole responsibility, and its senior officials will be responsible and pay the price for their aggression.” “The offensive operations are expected to continue until we achieve the objectives that we have set,” he added. “We have approved various offensive activities that will severely harm Hamas and the other terrorist organisations and ensure Israel’s security and the return of long-term calm.” The IDF described the attack as a “very serious incident” that will not pass unanswered. “Hamas will pay a price for its conduct and we will respond severely,” an IDF spokesman noted. “Hamas will understand this after we have

to put out fires.” During this week, US State Department spokesman Ned Price condemned the repeated rocket attacks as an “unacceptable escalation” in the “strongest terms”. Price added that Washington recognised Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens, but did not comment on specifics of Israel’s “retaliatory strikes”. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called for rocket attacks on Israel to “stop now” and Israel and the Palestinians “ should take steps to “de-escalate the situation”. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki noted “serious concern” on the attacks. The European Union condemned Palestinian rocket attacks into Israel and called on all sides for a de-escalation to prevent more civilian casualties.

We have prepared an extensive and well-ordered plan and we will not hesitate to implement it.” The IDF added, “This is an unacceptable attack on the State of Israel. Even now, we are bolstering our forces for a defense mission by the Gaza Division. We have prepared for an extensive range of scenarios, reinforced our air defense and deployed forces

“The firing of rockets from Gaza against civilian populations in Israel is totally unacceptable and feeds escalatory dynamics,” they noted in a statement. EU Ambassador to Israel, Emanuele Giaufret, said he was “extremely concerned” by the violence whilst Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the UK condemned the rocket launches at Jerusalem and other locations within Israel.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

“The ongoing violence in Jerusalem and Gaza must stop. We need an immediate de-escalation on all sides, and end to targeting of civilian populations”, Raab reportedly said. World Jewish Congress President, Ronald S. Lauder, in the wake of unrest in Jerusalem deplored the escalation of violence on Israel. “Hamas has time and again demonstrated its wanton disregard for human life and its unwillingness to accept the existence of a Jewish State in any borders at all,” he noted. “Under these circumstances, Israel has no choice but to respond with the force necessary to protects its citizens and put a stop to this threat.” Reacting to the barrage of rockets aimed at Tel Aviv and central Israel, Lauder declared, “It is utterly unthinkable that the population of Israel should be held hostage to the murderous whims of a terrorist regime. No country in the world could be expected to tolerate such a brazen and bloody assault. It is the responsibility of every government to protect its citizens and we call on the international community to stand resolutely with Israel in its attempts to restore stability and safety and to put an end to this outrageous situation.” Bicom noted that by the level of damage caused in Israel, Hamas had deployed new technology in rockets. Some were fired at a lower trajectory to avoid the missile defence system. More powerful explosives had been also deployed, potentially with Iranian technology support. The violence began with Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces on the Temple Mount, at Damascus Gate and Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood shortly after prayers at the Western Wall marked the start of Jerusalem Day. Rocket sirens blared across Jerusalem as Jewish marchers participating in the Jerusalem Day flag parade ran for cover. Rocket fire was met with cheers by Palestinians at Damascus Gate. Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) coordinator, in a statement, noted that “rocket fire and continued launching of arson balloons” from Gaza was a “violation of Israeli sovereignty”. Netanyahu was at a cabinet meeting to mark Jerusalem Day, he noted, “We are currently witnessing violent disturbances in Jerusalem under the influence of agitators. We will not allow any extremist element to undermine the quiet in Jerusalem. We will uphold law and order, vigorously and responsibly. We will continue to guard freedom of worship for all faiths but we will not allow violent disturbances.” Regarding Jerusalem Day, Netanyahu said it had been the capital of the Jewish people for thousands of years. The annual parade was rerouted on Monday after the IDF and Shin Bet warned Police of potential issues. Tensions in Jerusalem have risen since the start of Ramadan when Palestinian rioters and Israel Police clashed and rose after Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas announced last month that the Palestinian elections planned for the summer would be postponed. Recently, there has also been ‘Tik Tok attacks” where Arabs have posted attacks on ultra-Orthodox Jews. The delayed eviction of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah also caused protests.

HELP US CREATE A CULTURE OF CONSENT AND RESPECT

We have all been shocked by national news reports about sexual harassment and sexual violence going unchecked in schools and on campuses across the UK. Some Jewish schools, as well as university Jewish societies, have been named as the educational settings where young people have experienced sexual harassment, misogyny, abuse and assault at the hands of their peers. Our children must be properly educated about consent, healthy relationships and appropriate behaviour.

Jewish Women’s Aid currently reaches over 3000 pupils and students each year, giving them the tools to understand healthy relationships. Now is the time to extend our support.

We urgently need to raise £200,000 to increase the size of our education team, to help us build programmes, reach young Jewish people, and create a safer future for our community. Donate now at jwa.org.uk/donate

Tzipi stands firm for Israel on BBC Newsnight BY DAVID SAFFER Tzipi Hotovely stood firm under a barrage of critical questions from BBC Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis regarding the escalation in riots and rocket attacks between Israel and Palestinians in Gaza on Monday night. Asked how ashamed she was of the Israeli government, Hotovely hit back hard at Maitlis, “I’m ashamed of the fact that you are not presenting the right picture.” She explained, “Israel was under attack today, our capital city was fired with rockets, and as a matter of fact, the Israeli parliament for the first time in history, was evacuated. Think about it, we are five minutes away from Westminster, how you would feel if London was under rocket attack. Would you sit silently and not respond and not protect your people?” Ignoring Maitlis interruptions against Israel, Hotovely persevered, “Dominic Rabb said very clearly that he condemns the fact that rockets were fired on Israel from Hamas. This is a total provocation of a terror organisation. This terror organisation doesn’t care about settlements, this terror organisation cares about only one thing, it wants to replace the State of Israel and to erase it from the map of the Middle East.” Maitlis moved on to note Israel’s military, policing and political power over Gaza and

Palestinian children being amongst fatalities in the latest hostilities. “We want to protect children from both sides, if you check Israel’s record for all those years, we always protected human rights.” Hotovely noted, adding, “Children in Israel were receiving rockets on their heads, to their schools and their kintergartens. We had that in the past and today. Our IDF are defending those children. They are not targeting children, they are targeting Hamas targets. And as you know, Hamas is using those children as human shields.

This is the reality on the ground. This is a cruel terror organisation using the children and women in the Gaza Strip in order to achieve political aims.” Pressing the point, Maitlis asked, “Why don’t you step up and recognise, when you are firing, children get killed? Why were you firing into a mosque? “We are firing at targets of a cruel terror organisation, radical Islamists are trying to kill our children,” Hotovely responded. With Maitlis’ questioning became more abrasive regarding settlements and riots

LDFI tribute to Davies Liberal Democrats Friends of Israel vicechair Jonathan Davies has passed away (May 4th). The 59-year-old had been battling illness for a year. Paying tribute to Davies on its website, LDFI spoke movingly about the long-time LDFI Vice-Chairman and Treasurer. “On a local level, Jonathan was a phenomenal activist in the London Borough of Barnet,” they noted. “He represented Childs Hill as a councillor from 1994-1998, stood for Parliament in Finchley and Golders Green on three occasions and was appointed the ward’s election agent in the very high profile 2019 election, as well as being elected as Chair of the English Party of the Liberal Democrats in 2010.” LDFI noted Jonathan’s talents, dedication and calming influence which spanned decades, his devotion to countless hours to campaigning for and supporting the Party. Liberal to his core, LDFI recalled Jonathan being incredibly proud of his Judaism and as a devout Zionist his love for Israel. Jonathan was a longstanding Deputy on the Board of Deputies.

Jonathan Davies z”l

“His contribution to the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel, and his local Jewish community, is immeasurable,” noted LDFI. “Jonathan was the organiser-in-chief, he made sure LDFI ran like clockwork, meticulous to the core and always ensuring that every detail was as it should be.” They added, At our Honorary Executive Committee meetings, often warmly hosted at Jonathan’s home, the team would sometimes struggle to recall something, and within an instant Jonathan would be remind us of the event, the date, the person, the election or the Jewish festival. This was a first-rate mind at work.” LDFI concluded, “We will miss his insight, his warmth and his companionship, especially on our memorable delegations to the Middle East, Israel and the West Bank. We will miss his contributions, his presence, his valuable input and his tremendous and unstinting commitment.” An Oxford graduate and former Partner and Head of the Financial Services team at a large City law firm, Jonathan is survived by his brother Neil, and sister-in law Suzanne.

at al-Asqe mosque, Hotovely stayed calm, pointing out Palestinian provocations against Israelis, questioning Palestinian representative responses in media interviews and pointing out that Arabs and Jews live together. “It is the duty of every country to protect its own people,” Hotovely reiterated. Turning to Jerusalem Day, Hotovely said that Israel was celebrating the reunification of Jerusalem. She explained, “Under Israeli sovereignty, we always had freedom of worship, but look at what they are doing, they are abusing the holy sight and committing crimes of violence against innocent Israelis.” Maitlis concluded on Hotovely’s viewpoint on a two-state solution. Israel’s emissary noted. “I believe in peace, I still do.” She added, “I don’t believe in failed solutions. I believe in practical, pragmatic solutions. And I really think you should have asked a Palestinian representative how come they refuse to negotiate with Israel for years since Barack Obama was American president. How come they refuse to sit and have a direct negotiation when our friends in the Gulf are coming and making normalisation (deals) with Israel? How come they are the only Arab people that refuse to recognise to have a Jewish state? During the Abraham Accords when they were assigned we had this hope that things may get better and I still believe with the right leadership we will go there. But it takes leadership that doesn’t incite and definitely doesn’t send rockets on civilians?” This is not the first time Hotovely has clashed with Maitlis on Newsnight. Only last month, Israel’s emissary hit back at Maitlis in discussions about Israel’s vaccine programme, two-state solution and opposition to her appointment in the UK as a “religious right winger”.

Queen’s Speech legislation on BDS The Queen’s Speech included an announcement that the Government’s legislative agenda will include a new law banning public bodies from joining in with the Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign on the grounds that it “may legitimise antisemitism”. According to the Government’s official documentation, the purpose of the legislation is to “deliver the manifesto commitment to stop public bodies from imposing their own approach or views about international relations, through preventing boycott, divestment or sanctions campaigns against foreign countries.” The document also acknowledges the long-standing connections between the BDS movement and antisemitism, stating that “unofficial boycotts have been associated with antisemitism in the United Kingdom including kosher food being removed from supermarket shelves, Jewish films being banned from a film festival and a student union holding a vote on blocking the formation of a Jewish student society.” Campaign Against Antisemitism note BDS supporters routinely engage the International Definition of Antisemitsm.

Biden and Mossad chief meet at White House BY SIMCHA ABIR US President Joe Biden has met Mossad head Yossi Cohen at the White House for talks about Iran. Cohen is the first top Israeli official to hold talks with Biden since his inauguration. During the Washington visit, Cohen also met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, senior CIA members and American intelligence agencies. Cohen’s meeting came in the midst of JCPOA 2015 nuclear deal talks in Vienna between world powers. Former US President Donald Trump left the accord in 2018. A deal is anticipated but Israel is wary. “We’ve seen willingness of all sides, including the Iranians, to talk seriously about sanctions relief restrictions and a pathway back into the JCPOA,” US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said. “But it is still uncertain as to whether this will culminate in a deal in Vienna.” British, French and German diplomats said critical matters remained before an agreement can be reached. US Army deputy chief of staff for intelligence, Lt. Gen. Laura Potter. Israeli delegations visited Washington to discuss Iran and the US-Israeli military/intelligence relationship. US officials stressed Biden’s “unwavering support” for Israel’s right to defend itself, but Israeli leaders have expressed reservations. In related news, top Biden administration officials from the National Security Council and State Department have held meetings in Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Amman and Cairo to boost “political, economic, cultural and security ties” with Gulf partners. European intelligence agencies, meantime, have issued reports in recent weeks illustrating Iranian attempts to obtain technology for its nuclear weapons programme last year. Netherland’s General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) outlined multiple acquisition attempts by Iran to obtain knowledge and materials but had been able to “frustrate” efforts. Sweden’s Security Service issued a report that Tehran had attempted to acquire Swedish technology whilst Iran had conducted “industrial espionage” against the Swedish hi-tech industry. The Bavarian state intelligence agency in Germany also noted Iranian efforts to expand its “conventional arsenal” through the “production or modernisation” of weapons of mass destruction. All reports refute Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s comments regarding nuclear weapons.

Campaign Against Antisemitism has welcomed Oxford University Labour Club (OULC) requesting an online training session to help fight antisemitism. The event, CAA note, was well received especially with OULC’s contribution to antisemitism in the Labour Party. CAA offer antisemitism training to university groups, regulators, police forces and other organisations. Binyomin Gilbert, CAA Programme Manager, noted, “This new generation of OULC members clearly grasps the importance of fighting antisemitism and has shown a commitment to restoring the reputation of the club. We are proud to have contributed to that noble effort.” Gilbert has encouraged other university societies and public bodies to arrange antisemitism training and become allies in the fight against the “world’s oldest hatred”. In 2016, CAA recalled, the OULC was investigated by Labour following allegations of antisemitism levelled by the club’s co-chair, Alex Chalmers, who resigned in protest against antisemitic conduct. The investigation was ultimately dropped in January 2017. Among issues, students reportedly testified that OULC members called Auschwitz a “cash cow”, Jews were called “Zios” and Jewish members were asked to renounce Israel publicly before speaking. Antisemitism. CAA noted that Labour students were sent to investigate but “findings were suppressed”. Baroness Royall undertook an investigation into alleged OULC antisemitism and in the Party but, CAA note, only the executive summary of the report was published, providing a “misleadingly positive account” of the problem. The Royall report was eventually leaked but not officially published in full. It was rolled into the Shami Chakrabarti inquiry, a “whitewash report”, CAA note, that introduced a “system of secrecy” into the Party’s disciplinary process. As for the OULC, all accused students were cleared without censure. CAA commented, “While the club’s past cannot be undone, it is extremely encouraging to see its current members’ commitment to fighting antisemitism. In the description for the online event, the organisers wrote that the training was “mandatory for all committee members but strongly encouraged for other members, especially for those interested in running for OULC committee positions in future.”’ Five years ago, Chalmers resigned after the club voted to embrace Israel Apartheid Week. Students concerned about antisemitism on campus or wish to arrange antisemitism training for a university society should call CAA on 0330 822 0321 or e-mail campus@ antismitism.uk

Disabled IDF veterans deal BY SIMCHA ABIR Israeli MKs have backed a Defence Ministry proposal to reform the rehabilitation care for IDF veterans wounded in action. Weeks of protests culminated in hundreds of disabled veterans demonstrating outside the Knesset and blocking major routes into Jerusalem due to the state’s inaction over the issue. Concerns were highlighted by Itzik Saidyan who set himself alight before Israel’s Memorial Day at the Defence Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department in Petah Tikva due to his disability ranking. The 26-year-old, who served in the 2014 Gaza War and suffered from severe PTSD, warned he would harm himself. Sheba Medical Centre officials have described his condition as very serious with his life was in “imminent danger”. A budgetary dispute halted the progress of the “One Soul” NIS 300 million ($92 million) proposal for rehabilitation of veterans and especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Media reports noted that the Defence Ministry will immediately put in place help for veterans suffering from PTSD. Vocational training, support groups, alternative treatments and a dedicated call centre will be available for veterans and family members. A Rehabilitation Department will

comprise 60 people. The IDF will also provide aid to soldiers in service. “After many efforts, we reached an agreement between the Prime Minister’s Office and Defence and finance ministries, together with the IDF Disabled Veterans Organisation, for reforming the Rehabilitation Department,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly said. “Wounded IDF veterans are important and dear to us and an immediate and fundamental reform is needed to ensure the help that they deserve.” Netanyahu vowed to approve the reform as soon as practical. “I have approved thousands of operations, attack plans and reforms in the IDF and Defence establishment and yet this is one of the most important and most moral efforts I have led, and I will continue to lead the implementation of this reform and provide the proper care for IDF veterans,” Defence Minister Benny Gantz reportedly said in a statement. IDF Disabled Veterans Organisation head Idan Kleinman reportedly noted, “We are beginning to correct a years-long injustice, from which many disabled veterans and their families suffered in sacrificing their bodies and souls for the country’s Defence.” The cabinet is expected to pass the plan. Within hours of the demonstration last week Finance Minister Israel Katz met

with the disabled group to push the issue forward. Saidyan’s sister, Leah, Itzik, told reporters that her brother had got to breaking point over the ‘One Soul’ issues. “Itzik’s protest was not about money nor for disability percentages, but receiving rehabilitation,” she explained. “It is right and proper that every fighter who was wounded or injured, physically or mentally, will receive the best treatment. We will not stop protesting until the reform is fully implemented,” Kliman, told Channel 12. Rehabilitation issues have been ongoing with criticism from veteran groups over a complicated system establishing whether injuries were caused by or during military service. The process can take years resulting in an applicant not receiving assistance. This is exasperating for veterans with PTSD. Itamar Graf, Rehabilitation Dept interim head, claims 10,700 have requested disabled status. “The service provided to disabled IDF veterans is not good,” Graf reportedly noted. “The IDF is closely linked to bereaved families, widows and orphans. We must act with a similar attitude towards (the wounded)”. Netanyahu and Gantz disagreed over a NIS 350 million ($108 million) proposal. Netanyahu’s Office blamed the Defence Ministry over funding the program in 2021 and 2022.

Ben-Gurion declaration 73 years ago Tomorrow is the 73rd anniversary of Jewish Agency chairman David Ben-Gurion’s famous Israel’s Declaration of Independence speech in what is now known as Independence Hall in Tel-Aviv. The ceremony just before Shabbat on 14 May 1948 was held on the day that the British Mandate over Palestine was officially terminated in accordance with UN resolution 181 calling for the division of land into a Jewish state and an Arab one.   Ben-Gurion, standing, promised equal protection under law for “its citizens, without distinction of race, creed, or sex,” a “guarantee (of ) full freedom of conscience, worship, education and culture,” and safeguarding of religious sites. The declaration offered peace and unity to all of the neighbouring states and invited them to cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the “common good of all”. The last sentence of the declaration refers to “the rock of Israel”. Within 11 minutes the United States had become the first country to recognise a provisional Jewish government as the de facto authority of a Jewish state.

Global antisemitism is ‘hot topic’ at WJC assembly BY ADAM MOSES Global antisemitism was the ‘hot topic’ during a ‘special envoy’ meeting at World Jewish Congress’ 16th Plenary Assembly. WJC President Ronald S. Lauder called for “education, education, education” to combat the rise in antisemitism. The Special Envoys and Coordinators Combating Antisemitism (SECCA) gathering included representatives from Jewish communities in 45 countries. Amongst delegates were 22 special envoys from different countries and seven international organisations. The assembly paid respect to the 45 victims of the Mount Meron Lag BaOmer tragedy in Israel. WJC President Ronald S. Lauder addressed the rise in antisemitism. “Why is it happening now?” he asked. “In 1945, when people saw the pictures of bodies and what the Nazis did to the Jewish people, nobody wanted to be associated with antisemitism. We thought this virus was finally gone, and for two and a half generations, it was. We are now three generations away, and people do not remember what happened, we are not taught in schools what happened, and therefore it’s a blind spot for many people.” Lauder added, “There’s no way to combat antisemitism except through education, education, education, and governments working together to fight it. Also, a great deal of antisemitism comes through the internet, we must do everything we can to stop this hate from reaching so many young people.” SECCA co-chair, Katharina von Schnurbein, overviewed the European Commission’s strategy to combat antisemitism which would focus on policies and legislation whilst co-chair, Julius Meinl outlined work to track conspiracy theories against Jews related to COVID-19. “We have been building close working relations with many of the internet giants to develop guidelines, policies and tools to fight this phenomenon,” Meini commented. She added, “We have been monitoring all the darkest corners of the web and social networks to identify hubs of antisemitic activity and report them to social media companies.” Meini praised Germany and France for adopting laws to curb online hate speech and called on other European countries to adopt similar legislation. He also highlighted efforts to counter the glorification

of Nazi collaborators, educate diplomats and policy officials on countering antisemitism. Daniel Holtgen, Council of Europe’s Special Representative on Antisemitism, called for improvements to bigotry online. “Freedom of expression is one of our most important fundamental human rights, but there are limits when hate and crimes begin,” he explained. Luisa Ragher, European External Action Service, added, “We will ensure that ‘never again’ is passed. On other continents, Mary Kluk, Africa & Australia Jewish Congress Chair, explained that the past decade had seen South Africa defend its relationship with Israel, while Prof. Marcos Peckel, Latin American Jewish Congress commissioner, stated that you could not underestimate the possibility of antisemitism would “appear, rise and become a threat”. “Make the laws before we need them, not after,” Peckel noted. Antisemitism remained a serious presence in Australia. The past year had seen over 330 antisemitic incidents including abuse of students in junior public schools, the emergence of neo-Nazi organisations and erosion in elected officials’ support of Israel. In America, Kara McDonald, US State Department Bureau of Democracy, emphasised the administration’s commitment to fighting antisemitism. “We must confront the chilling reality that Jewish communities around the world increasingly live in fear for their safety, and recognise that too often, antisemitic attacks are met with impunity,” she noted. “We must always answer crimes of hate with justice and counter lies with facts.” She added, “As President Biden has said, each of us must remain vigilant and speak out against the resurgent tide of antisem-

itism and other forms of bigotry and intolerance here at home and around the world.” Irwin Cotler, representing Canadian interests, discussed an escalation of antisemitism tied to support for Israel and conspiracy theories. “Antisemitism is not only the oldest, most enduring, most toxic and most lethal of hatreds, a paradigm of hate as the Holocaust is a paradigm of radical evil, but it is the canary in the mineshaft of global evil today, a threat to our common humanity,” he explained, adding, “In order to combat antisemitism we must be able to recognise it, identify it and define it.” Lord Eric Pickles, UK Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust Issues, said that COVID-19 had shown antisemitism was “alive, kicking and adaptable”. Lord Pickles spoke about how Jewish people had been “blamed” for the spread of the pandemic and been accused of profiting from vaccine sales. He also expressed “shock” at “age-old antisemitic tropes” against Jewish owners of football clubs involved in the European Super League. Describing the reluctance of some UK, Europe and US universities to adopt the IHRA definition as “extraordinary”, it was “even more extraordinary”, Lord Pickles noted that the IHRA is seen by some as an “attack on academic freedom”. Lord Pickes called on “great educational institutions” to lead the charge on antisemitism. Theo Bertram, TikTok’s Director of Government Relations and Public Policy for Europe, praised the social media platform’s partnership with WJC to protect users from “hateful and antisemitic content” whilst also educating on the Holocaust and Jewish history. Bertram explained that TikTok bans Holocaust content that advances conspiracy theories related to COVID-19, fascist ideologies and those that serve as a proxy to spread antisemitism. TikTok employs a combination of technologies to remove extremist content. “The vast majority of content is removed before anyone has seen it and mostly before anyone has even flagged it,” Bertram noted, “Our goal is to eliminate hate on TikTok. We are very pleased to be working with the WJC task force to achieve this goal.” Bertram also discussed a partnership with WJC to improve mechanisms to rid the platform of antisemitic content. “Platforms like ours have a critical role to play in educating people,” he said. “We’re fully committed and humbled to work with PHOTO:WIKIMEDIA the WJC.”

Indoor masks to go but no date set BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel’s Health Ministry is set to discuss removing measures to wear masks indoors as the easing of COVID-19 restrictions continues. The mandate to wear face masks outdoors ended last month. Coronavirus czar Prof. Nachman Ash accepts an announcement will come but no date has been suggested. “While I can say (an end to the mandate on masks indoors) is on the way, I still cannot specify timeframes,” Ash reportedly said. COVID-19 cases are down and Israel’s vaccine campaign has been praised globally but the situation regarding masks will take into account the downturn in vaccination rates and 12-15-year-olds not yet being inoculated. “The vaccination of children is sensitive and complex, but I remain calm as we have excellent professionals who can make the right decision,” Ash reportedly said. “I believe that the vaccines are safe and effective even among children, but this is a professional issue.” Ash added. “Vaccinating children is important in order to prevent serious illness. Even if long-term side effects do occur, it is still safer than being sick.” Last week saw the ending of restrictions regarding food and drink. “We need to see that this move did not lead to an increase in infection,” Ash explained. “We also want to see the effects of the Lag BaOmer celebrations as well,” he added. Ash continued, “We are also still not sure about infection rates among people who are vaccinated. The more data we get, the easier we will be able to make the decision.” Ash voiced caution over a drop in people receiving a vaccine. “We have reached five million (fully) inoculated, which while a significant number, I think is not enough, I want more but people are now coming to get vaccinated slowly,” he reportedly said. As for variants, he added, “That will prove somewhat impervious to the vaccine spreading in Israel.” Ash reiterated Health Ministry advice for essential travel abroad and travel warnings to Ukraine, Ethiopia, Brazil, South Africa, India, Mexico and Turkey due to infection rates. “We have essentially banned trips to these countries,” he reportedly said. “Those returning from these countries, whether they have previously recovered from COVID or have been vaccinated against it, will have to enter isolation upon their return.” Health Ministry illustrates patients in critical condition at 84, 50 are on ventilators. The national death toll is 6,376. Dr. Anthony Fauci, US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, is the latest high-profile figure to praise Israel’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking on Channel 13 News last week, he reportedly noted, “I think the history of Israel, because of the political circumstances that surround you in the region, you know what it means to stick together as a single unit. Otherwise, you would not have survived as well as you survived.”

IDF arrest yeshiva student killer BY DAVID SAFFER Israel Defence Forces have arrested the suspected killer of yeshiva student Yehuda Guetta after a three-day manhunt. Guetta, 19, of Kiryat Moshe, Jerusalem, passed away at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva from injuries sustained in a drive-by terror attack at Tapuach Junction in the West Bank last week. Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of the teenager, who is survived by his parents and six siblings, last Thursday. Jonathan Pollard was among speakers during the service. Two other students travelling to study at Hesder Itamar Yeshivah, also 19, were also injured in the terror attack. Bania Peretz, of Beit She’an, remains in serious condition. His father, Zohar, has asked for Israelis to say Tehillim for his son. Amichai Hala was released from the hospital after treatment for light injuries. Muntasir Shalabi, 44, from West Bank town Turmus Aya was named as the main suspect and eventually tracked to a building in Silwad near Ramallah. He has been interrogated by Shin Bet. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised security forces for swiftly capturing the Shalabi. “I commend the Shin Bet, the IDF and the

police for their swift and determined action that led to the capture of the despicable terrorist who murdered (Yehuda) Guetta and wounded (Bania) Peretz,” he said. “Israel’s long arm reaches anyone who harms our citizens.” Media reports have not linked Shalabi to a terror group but he reportedly backs

Hamas and had called for terrorist attacks in the West Bank. Prior to his arrest his wife, Sanaa, and son, Ahmad, were arrested and questioned at the Shin Bet. According to eyewitness, a suspected vehicle stopped near a bus station. At the time of the shooting, six people were at the scene. The terrorists fled toward Ramallah. Security forces immediately launched a manhunt. Hala reportedly told media outlets about the attack, “We were talking to some guys at the bus station and suddenly I heard a loud noise and gun shots. We quickly lay down on the floor. I was with my back to the terrorists and only after I lay down did I realise they shot at us and fled towards Nablus.” Hala added that it was a “miracle” he was only lightly hurt. “Very quickly they started evacuating the wounded and then I saw that I was hurt by a bullet in the back,” he noted. “It was only when I was on the floor that I realised it was a terror attack. If I was standing a millimetre to the right or to the left, my situation would have been different.” IDF forces entered Silwad near Ramallah to set up checkpoints. President Reuven Rivlin extended condolences to Guetta’s family after his death was announced. “I’m sending a courageous hug, strength, and prayers,” Rivlin said. “Oh, the pain and

sorrow for the light that has been taken by a miscreant.” Netanyahu noted, “These are difficult moments for the Guetta family and the entire nation of Israel shares in your sorrow.” Following the attack, Netanyahu vowed to make a strong response. He said, “We will not allow terrorism to raise its head and we will strike our enemies with force.” Defense Minister Benny Gantz confirmed the IDF was on high alert. “We will catch the terrorists and settle the score with them,” he said. “The IDF is doing everything necessary to protect our citizens and ensure stability during a volatile and challenging period,” Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi reportedly added. Israeli security forces, the IDF and Shin Bet apprehended a number of suspects during the manhunt. Shalabi returned to the Palestinian territories in 2020 having lived in the United States for a number of years according to media reports. Palestinian security forces discovered an abandoned car, set alight by the suspected militants. The IDF are unable to examine the burntout vehicle. In the aftermath of the attack, violence increased as Israeli settlers reportedly carried out revenge attacks against Palestinians.

BY JAMES MARLOW Egyptian born Mohamed ELNeny, who plays midfield for the North London club Arsenal, this week tweeted two pictures which suggested Israel should be destroyed. Two of the three images, showed the outline of a map of Israel on a black background, with a waving Palestinian flag and the Dome of the Rock mosque inside, hinting that Israel should be removed in its entirety. The pictures are very similar to those seen in Palestinian school text books in the West Bank and funded by the European Union and other nations. In response to Elneny’s tweet, Arsenal FC were contacted and asked whether they knew the club had a fairly large Jewish support base?

An Arsenal spokesperson replied, “As with any employees of Arsenal, our players are entitled to express their views on their own platforms. That said we are speaking with Mo about this so he understands the wider implications of his post. “As a Club we are committed to confronting and eliminating all forms of discrimination and continue to champion the need for equality and diversity across all areas of life.” Earlier this month, this writer boycotted social media for four days in solidarity with the Premiership and Football Leagues, Rugby Union and Rugby League and the Cricket Board of England and Wales, to pressure companies to do more against the growing racism, anti-Semitism and anonymous hatred online. But 28 year-old Mohamed ELNeny, must realise that the rules of racism and anti-Semitism, apply to the footballer as well as to the fans.

ZAKA volunteers return to Mount Meron for counselling BY ADAM MOSES ZAKA search and rescue volunteers have returned to the site of the Lag B’Omer stampede disaster at Mount Meron for counselling and emotional support. A week after the tragedy that saw 45 people lose their lives, including 10 children, in what is Israel’s biggest civilian disaster, dozens of ZAKA volunteers and paramedics attended a memorial service in honour of those lost. Counselling was led by psychologists and mental health professionals to deal with the trauma witnessed. ZAKA Northern District Commander, Rabbi Anshel Friedman, ZAKA Chief Officer, Zohar Dvir, ZAKA CEO, Dubi Weissenster and ZAKA Special Units Commander, Chaim Weingarten, participated. ZAKA volunteers were presented with 45 emergency medical kits named in memory of the victims. Dvir, who previously served as Commander of the Northern District in the Israel Police, had been in charge of the Lag BaOmer events at the historic site for three years. “Then I prayed that we would be able to get through the event without any disasters,”

he reportedly recalled. “This year, as Chief Officer with ZAKA, I was with you on the ground, I watched you from up close, saw how you worked, like angels, with such sensitivity despite the horrific scenes, alongside the emergency and rescue forces.” Weissenster, reportedly added, “This was a very difficult disaster, nothing could have prepared us. I wish to commend the volunteers for their hard work and dedication in such a complex event. Once again, you have proved yourselves as you treated the dead and cared for the families with such sensitivity. It is essential that all volunteers undergo this debriefing, led by professionals, because no one can say after such a traumatic event ‘it didn’t affect me’.” At the end of the event, volunteers linking arms in song and prayer. The ensuing days has seen more tragic stories emerge of those lost and the frantic actions of families to contact missing family members and friends. Whilst numerous financial appeals of support are ongoing Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit announced that a major inquiry into the disaster including investigations by Israel Police and its the Justice Ministry’s Police Internal Investigations Department.

Investigators will probe junior and senior officers from the Northern District about their actions during Lag B’Omer celebrations. It is understood that Mandelblit delayed his announcement in case the government set up a commission of inquiry. “The two teams will work in a collaborative and coordinated manner for the purpose of investigating the incident, while ensuring certain checks and balances are maintained in order to keep the investigative independence of each body,” Mandelblt reportedly said, adding that Deputy State Prosecutor Shlomo Lemberger will assist investigations. “Any question that arises regarding the joint activity will be brought to the decision of senior professionals in the State Attorney’s Office,” added Mandelblit. “It is difficult to overstate the severity of the disaster that occurred on Mount Meron, and therefore everything possible must be done to discover the truth through an effective and efficient investigation.” Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai has informed Mandelblit he is calling for a state commission of inquiry into the disaster. Mandelblit has no objection to the committee in a transitional government.

Coalition negotiations update

Unrest throws Change Bloc into disarray BY JAMES MARLOW In a rare show of public Centre-Right political unity, Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennett and Gideon Sa’ar, fully back Prime Minister Netanyahu’s military response against Gaza, in the wake of hundreds of rockets fired into Israel. For the first time in history, the Knesset was evacuated as sirens went off in the capital on Monday. At least 6 rockets were fired toward Jerusalem, two to Beit Shemesh and more than 600 across the South of Israel. In addition Hamas claimed it fired 130 rockets into Tel Aviv on Tuesday. Knesset Members and staff, along with reporters and security personnel, ran to safe shelters on Monday where some journalists, sitting crouched in tight spaces next to MK’s, took selfies to post on social media. We were told last week and again on Sunday that a new Left-Centre-Right-Arab government, led by Yair Lapid, would be in place by Tuesday and on Sunday, it was postponed to Thursday. However following the announcement that the main party leaders would give their full support to an offensive against Gaza, the Islamist Ra’am party, pressed the pause button on their political negotiations. Without the 4 seats of Ra’am, the “bloc for change” consisting of Yesh Atid, Blue and White, Yamina, Yisrael Beitenu, Labor, New Hope and Meretz can only reach 57 seats. Netanyahu managed 59 seats. Ra’am head, Mansour Abbas was expected to vote in favour of the government this week and would have been part of the new coalition, but not serve as a cabinet minister. However Abbas made it very clear that he would not re-engage in political negotiations until the security situation had settled down. Bearing in mind that Lapid has just over two weeks to go before his mandate to form a new government expires, a lot now depends on how far the Islamist groups in Gaza, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and others, wish to take this latest round of fighting. The so-called change bloc of parties, aiming to replace Binyamin Netanyahu as Prime Minister were reported to have made significant progress in ironing out the last kinks in the dividing up of ministries, before this latest “setback”. Earlier Meretz head Nitzan Horowitz said, “The government that will be created will know how to deal with the unrest in Jerusalem, because it will come from a

Judaism, called on the Prime Minister to step aside. Their proposal was for Netanyahu to vacate the premiership for a year and a half and allow a right wing government to be formed, in order to avert a left wing government or a fifth election. The two UTJ MK’s suggested that Netanyahu should appoint a capable Knesset Member from the right bloc, able to unite the 65 rightwing MKs and become Prime Minister for the first year and a half, in an alternating premiership arrangement. It seems the resulting unfolding events from a much higher power, disagreed with the two Orthodox MK’s and decreed something else.

BRING ON THE NEXT KNESSET ELECTION

As it stands right now, Israel is heading to its fifth election. Unless of course the current conflict will knock some sense into the parties that refuse to sit in a government with Netanyahu. place of partnership”, he told his faction at a party meeting. But Horowitz still questioned matters of settlements and refused to say whether he would compromise and drop his demand for the Education portfolio in the new government. Lapid planned to give Avigdor Liberman the Finance Ministry, much to the disappointment of Bennett and Saar. Liberman’s stance on religion, such as civil unions, relaxed Shabbat laws and the change of requirements governing kosher supervision, would make it almost impossible for religious parties to join the coalition at a later date. In addition, Liberman demanded secular education for all chareidi schools and full chareidi enlistment into the army. Labor’s Merav Michaeli insisted on becoming Justice or Education Minister which Bennett and Saar were totally opposed to, due to her left-wing views. But the Labor party could have been offered the chairmanship of key Knesset committees as a compromise. New Hope leader Gideon Sa’ar was going to take the Justice Ministry, while the Interior or Public Security portfolios were offered to Yamina’s number 2, Ayelet Shaked. All this now seems irrelevant as the LeftCentre-Right-Arab coalition appears to have fallen apart before it even got off the launching pad. Ra’am head Mansour Abbas negotiated

with Netanyahu last month. But due to Bezalel Smotrich’s objection of relying on the Islamist Party, even as support from outside the government, the Religious Zionist leader vetoed the coalition and Netanyahu failed to obtain a majority. Smotrich actually described Ra’am as a “terror-supporting”, faction because of its affiliation to the Muslim Brotherhood and whose charter calls Zionism, racist. But both Netanyahu, Lapid, Bennett and Sa’ar were prepared to accept the 4 seat party, to reach a Knesset majority. Before the election, Bennett called on Netanyahu whilst live on Channel 20 News, to pledge not to form a government reliant on Ra’am, which he himself vowed not to enter into a rotation deal with Yair Lapid. But words and promises made during an election campaign are one thing and policies and plans after the election, are something very different. Especially when all party leaders in Israel begin the dreaded “horse trading” agreements. As it stands right now, Israel is heading to its fifth election. Unless of course the current conflict will knock some sense into the parties that refuse to sit in a government with Netanyahu.

Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin announced on Monday that the vote for the next President of Israel will be held on Wednesday 2 June. Candidates who are still interested in running for the post, must submit their nomination papers by Wednesday 19 May, two weeks before the Knesset vote. Each nomination paper has to contain at least 10 endorsement signatures from Members of Knesset in order for a candidate to be eligible to run in the secret Knesset ballot vote. Candidates include, former Labor party leader and current Jewish Agency Chairman, Yitzhak Herzog, former Cabinet Minister Shimon Sheetrit, former Labor MK Michael Bar-Zohar, former Likud MK Yehuda Glick, Solar Energy Pioneer Yosef Abramowitz and possibly the Israel prize winning educator Miriam Peretz. Yitzhak Herzog is the son of Israel’s sixth president, Chaim Herzog and Peretz is an educator and activist. She became a prominent public figure after losing two soldier sons in battles in Lebanon and Gaza. In recent weeks, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s name has also been raised as a possible candidate, but he made it very clear on several occasions, he had no interest in the Presidency. Former Minister and Labor party leader, Amir Peretz, announced last week, he was ending his campaign and departing the political sphere after decades as a lawmaker. Peretz saw his popularity in Labor plummet after he joined the unity government last year, formed by Netanyahu and Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz. Peretz had vowed repeatedly during the preceding election campaign that he would not sit in a Netanyahu government and even shaved his moustache on live television so viewers could “read his lips” when he repeated the declaration. Those eligible to vote are the 120 Knesset Members and the vote will take place just over a month before President Reuven Rivlin’s seven-year term elapses on July 9.

The media has incited more hatred than necessary OPINION PIECE BY JAMES J MARLOW Some of the coverage on the international news networks has been absolutely appalling. ITN reported on Tuesday, “Israelis have continued a second day of relentless bombing of Gaza, killing at least 24 Palestinians, 9 of which were children. “In response, Hamas fired a few rockets into Israel yesterday evening”. Truth was, the “relentless” Hamas bombing of Israel lasted the entire Tuesday and all through the night. But in contrast, Israel sought out military targets in Gaza with precision bombing. On Monday, BBC Newsnight claimed that “dancing Israelis at the Western Wall were in celebratory mood after seeing, what they thought was the Al Aqsa Mosque on fire.” Truth was, Palestinians who were rioting on the Temple Mount, set a large tree on

fire, after a firework aimed at the police, missed its target. The “dancing Israelis” was the “celebratory mood” of Yom Yerushalayim. On the same day, Al Jazeera, a network I used to report for as an Israeli political analyst, portrayed the near lynching of an Israeli driver, close to the Lions Gate in Jerusalem as “an Israeli extremist settler who tried to kill Palestinians by running them down with in his vehicle.” Truth was, the car was driving along the old city Jerusalem walls, when its driver and two passengers were suddenly pelted with rocks and metal objects. As the vehicle tried to reverse and then move forward to avoid the barrage of at least 20 stone throwers from close range, the vehicle was surrounded and in a panic,

the driver accelerated and hit two Palestinians as it mounted the kerb. Al Jazeera could easily see how the car was hit with a massive onslaught of rocks, but it purposely edited out that section and just showed how the driver ran down two Palestinians, both of whom got up and walked away. If it wasn’t for a single traffic police officer, running down the street with his pistol in his hand, there is little doubt the 3 Israelis would have been lynched by the mob. The police officer had to fire in the air several times to keep the crowd back. But Al Jazeera chose to spread lies and incitement in the worst way possible. When covering the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians from a news point of view, how does one give the correct narrative as to who is right and who is wrong? It always seems to change depending upon when you start the clock. This past week is a perfect example. If you start the timeline from Israel bombing Gaza, then Israel is clearly the aggressor. But if you take a step back in time and say, Hamas began firing rockets into Israel, then Hamas are the wicked ones. But go back further and say, BUT the Israeli police stormed the Al Aqsa Mosque on the holiest night of the year during Ramadan. Not only that, but they fired stun grenades and rubber bullets. In that case, Israel is the bad guy. But then you take another step back and say: Palestinians began rioting with Molotov cocktails, rocks and fireworks several hours before riot police were anywhere near the scene. GO back further: BUT the Israelis were trying to evict a family from Sheikh Jarrah. BUT wait, an Israeli Yeshiva student, Yehuda Guetta, was shot along with two other student friends in his car, as he drove by the Tapuach junction. He later died in hospital from his injuries. AND Israeli police put up barriers around the Damascus Gate, which infuriated Muslims who were heading to Al Aqsa for

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Ramadan prayers. BUT Hamas in the eight Palestinian cities of the West Bank used its influence to incite hatred and violence against Israelis so their young followers would post the attacks on TikTok (social media). AND another step back: Israel takes the land. Well the Arabs started the wars. But what about the rejection of the UN partition plan of November 1947. And before you know it, you are back to the forties when the news presenters will stop you and say, “But wait, let’s deal with the problem today”. In short, the catalyst for the current violence is not really Sheikh Jarrah because the Jewish community bought that land for 15,000 francs in 1876, but were removed by the Jordanian army in 1948 when the ethnic cleaning began. In 1967, Jewish owners initiated legal proceedings to reclaim their property and in 1982 the court ruled, that they were the rightful legal owners. But in an act of clemency and compassion, the al-Kurds family were the rightful occupants and were granted “protected tenants” status. This meant they could remain, as long as they agreed to register a tenancy agreement and pay rent to the owner. They did neither. But on the subject of the current violence, we are witnessing a civil proxy war between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, who are angry with President Mahmoud Abbas, who did exactly what I predicted – he cancelled the Legislative and Presidential elections. Now each Palestinian faction is competing for “legitimacy” by demonstrating who can organize more violence against the Israelis. With the Palestinian Authority calling for rioting against Israel in the name of “defending Al-Aqsa” Hamas had no choice but to compete for attention by attacking Israel. So Hamas (funded by Iran) unleashed the largest barrage of rocket attacks on Israeli civilians since 2014. It’s difficult to see how this plays out in the coming days, as no doubt “international diplomacy” will step in. But the misinformation we are hearing on the news that the latest flair-up occurred because “Israelis stormed the Mosque”, may convince the majority, but it’s not the main reason this violence broke out. Those behind it have carefully constructed a well-orchestrated move to turn public opinion against Israel and the Jewish communities supporting Israel, and it is working very well.

OPINION

Will Scotland sink or swim? OPINION PIECE BY JACQUELINE CURZON Boris Johnson announced his intention to spend billions of pounds on improving Scottish road and rail networks, to permit Scottish nationals to be treated in English NHS hospitals and to prop up higher education. His new blueprint will use powers given via the UK Internal Market Act to spend billions on saving the union, the first steps of which will be activated after the election. One of his first proposals includes offering student exchanges between UK nations. This will be interesting, for whilst English students are required to pay hefty tuition fees, requiring prohibitive loans, Scottish students are exempt from these costs. In addition, the Henry report - published this July - is expected to recommend higher capacity and more efficient travel connections and journey times between the north and south of the UK. All this presupposes that disenchanted businesses will not ultimately flee south, and that passengers will have the need or inclination to make the commute. Under the terms of the Barnett formula, the Treasury guaranteed £8.6 billion additional funding to help the Scottish government respond to coronavirus. Do the Scots realise that this funding came from central government, the same one they constantly belittle, thanks to Sturgeon’s anti-English sentiment? We are now bending at the knee, our metaphorical outstretched arms proffering taxpayers money into the failing foundations of our northern neighbour. This latest financial promise was surely no more than a bribe, a desperate attempt to sway voters and thwart Sturgeon’s anti-union plans. Dr Paul Stott, author of a recent report for the Henry Jackson Society, points out that Iran has put considerable effort into courting SNP politicians. The Scottish Tories said this claim is ‘deeply concerning,’ and called for social media companies to take action. The report cited an occasion in 2015 when Alex Salmond visited Tehran, meeting several high profile regime figures before launching a campaign to forge stronger links between Scotland and the Islamic republic. This is reminiscent of Corbyn courting controversial friends during his tenure. Choosing friends must be done with great discretion. Readers will know I am extremely skeptical about the FM, and not in any small part because as a lawyer she was historically accused of ‘conduct unbecoming to a solicitor.’ This was back in 1998, with a matter investigated by case manager Olga Pasportnikov, who concluded that Ms Sturgeon had failed to provide competent legal services.

Not one to shrink from her single minded goal of an Independent Scotland, Sturgeon is still determined to press ahead with a second referendum. Despite these findings, the Law Society of Scotland decided there should be no further action, and Sturgeon resigned from the legal profession, which allowed her to enter politics without any formal findings against her. Pasportnikov was later put forward for promotion to Sheriff in 2015 by Sturgeon, and recently claimed she failed to remember this historical case against the FM. This is a tad far fetched, for one surely would recall interactions with an individual who then becomes a high profile figure, especially if they had paved the way for a significant promotion. This story was eventually filed for publication in June 2018, after several newspapers refused to publish the story. The FM has been trying to block the Judicial Interests Register petition since she took office. If the JIR were to become a legal requirement, it would force judges to disclose details of their service to the Law Society of Scotland. In terms of this past week’s election, political parties up north had warned that an SNP victory would be devastating in a country struggling to recover from the pandemic. My thoughts are that Scotland could have a practice session of independence, with all central government support withdrawn, and then take a vote to see if life will truly ‘be a red, red rose,’ when they’re finally outside the United Kingdom; after all breaking free in a high stakes divorce does not come with a quickie option. It could drag out for years, and then there’s the renegotiations with

the new partner {EU}. An Opinium survey for Sky News found that only 28% of Scots wanted a referendum within 2 years, with the remaining 72% wanting it later, or not at all. Whilst Ms Sturgeon granted votes to 16 year olds, to prisoners serving a sentence of less than a year (in all UK prisons) and employed many other vote boosting tactics, we should have demanded the entire UK in the voting, after all we have a vested interest in Scotland’s fate. Unfortunately painting the south as the enemy may have soured any prospect of us having an nationally inclusive referendum vote. And now it’s all over….? Nicola Sturgeon did extremely well in the polls, winning 64 seats in Holyrood, (one more than in 2016) although she failed - by one seat - to win a clear majority. This was due to tactical voting by three Unionist parties, who won more than 50% of the vote in key marginals. Her adversary Alex Salmond suffered a blistering humiliation, failing to win even one seat for Alba. For the FM, this is however the second time she has failed to secure a majority government which is in part good news, as it means SNP cannot simply bulldoze policies through, instead they must consult other parties and garner support for budgetary decisions and major reforms. Boris Johnson has seized on their failure to secure an outright majority by inviting Ms Sturgeon to an all nations ‘Team UK’ summit, in an attempt to preserve the Union. Whilst Johnson has

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

offered hospital treatment and education support to Scotland, as mentioned above, it is highly unlikely that Sturgeon would accept any such help, ‘forgetting’ as she might, the massive financial underwriting already received during the pandemic. The Scottish Conservatives took 31 seats, and Labour 22 seats out of a possible 129. The First Minister held her seat, seeing off a challenge from new Labour leader Anas Sarwar in Glasgow Southside. In Wales, the nationalists Plaid Cymru achieved 20% of the vote, whilst the Labour Party performed extremely well, winning 30 of the 60 Senedd seats available, just one seat short of an absolute majority. The Labour Party as a whole, seems to be heading for civil war following the disaster in Hartlepool, where they lost to the Conservatives by nearly 7,000 votes. With a loss across England of 239 Labour council seats, Angela Raynor, chairman of the party, was first in the firing line to be scapegoated, and Sir Keir Starmer has also reshuffled his team, in a likely attempt to stall a leadership challenge. Andy Burnham, former cabinet minister has shown his hand, offering to take on the mantle of leadership, if asked. It’s been a bumper election for the female contingent, with now some 58 women in Parliament, 34 for SNP, 10 for Labour, 8 for the Conservatives, 5 for the Greens and 1 for the Lib Dems. Irrespective of their separate political agendas, we know fables and stories don’t always have a happy ending. That’s the stuff of dreams and fairy tales! Not one to shrink from her single minded goal of an Independent Scotland, Sturgeon is still determined to press ahead with a second referendum, claiming ‘it is the will of the country,’ despite voters essentially having little choice. Since her victory speech she said there was a cast iron mandate for the PM to give her the power to call another vote by the end of 2023. Ominously she said, ‘all of this (referendum) is what I promised, and all of that is what I intend to deliver.’ A vote for direction and leadership is not necessarily twinned with a desire for independence, and the myriad of unknowns which will follow. Perhaps if the FM could outline a thorough and transparent plan of what would follow a positive outcome, more credence would be given to her request for the referendum. All this is very much in the air for now, with Michael Gove intimating that Scotland should not even think of calling a referendum until they have put their house in order. He referred to the ‘lost learning’ amongst school children, and to the criminal justice system, which is in chaos with a backlog of court cases likely to take until 2025 to clear. Plainly Sturgeon has a lot of house-work to catch up on, and that will take time.

OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN In the recent cycle of rocket attacks launched from Gaza, on Tuesday of this week the BBC Website reported US Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying that “Hamas must end the rocket attacks “immediately”, adding: “All sides need to de-escalate.” The idea that “all sides need to de-escalate” suggests that there is an equality of purpose of those involved in the conflict. That has been the basis of approach for many of those reporting on events in Israel and more recently some Jewish groups in the USA and here in the UK. This equality of purpose though does not exist since whilst Israel’s desire is to live in peace with its neighbours, Hamas is clear in its desire to destroy Israel. There is absolutely nothing equal about these aims. For those who don’t believe the latter part of that sentence, look at the advances made by the Abraham Accords with Israel creating formal relationships with the UAE and other countries who previously refused to do so. Whilst this has been a welcome step for Israel it has been precisely the opposite for Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. For decades, their mantra

Both sides has been that the centrality to peace in the Middle East was predicated on a solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. In other words, no other Arab state should enter into any formal relationship with Israel until the Palestinian conflict is resolved. Now that this dogma has gone, Hamas and the PA have been sidelined. Instead of accepting this reality and moving to direct talks, both Hamas and the PA have doubled down by increasing their belligerence and screaming foul at every opportunity. The left-wing Jewish groups who dislike the current Israeli Government have relied on this Palestinian intransigence to blame Israel for the lack of any progress in any peace agreement. They artfully ignore the

reality that the Palestinians have for some time categorically refused to enter into direct talks with Israel. Perversely then, Israel is to blame because neither Palestinian faction will talk directly to them. Sadly, it is this blame placed upon Israel by the outside world which has exacerbated matters not relieved them. For as long as the Palestinians are supported in their intransigence both with funds from the EU and other sources and international media support there is no purpose in reaching a peace agreement. Hamas and the PA can continue to attack Israel and Israelis and still play the victim card with impunity. What is so disappointing is that despite

The idea that “all sides need to de-escalate” suggests that there is an equality of purpose of those involved in the conflict.

SAVE THE DATE

this being so obvious, those claiming they want peace and blaming Israel simply cannot see it. Or perhaps they just don’t want to because it would mean accepting their pet victim is nothing of the sort and the support for them has been massively misplaced. The pressure is all the wrong way. Imagine if Hamas renounced violence, turned over its rockets and sued for peace? How could Israel possibly refuse. They couldn’t and frankly nor should they. In this continuing unlikely scenario, it would be accurate to talk about “both sides” and mutual de-escalation. This is not happening and until it does, we have to face the fact there is not an equality of purpose, just one side trying to kill the other and hoping no-one notices. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Once South promised at least six spades with his first rebid, a grand slam was always in the offing. West led the king of hearts and declarer counted twelve tricks. He saw that there were two main chances. The first was trumps being 2:2; accordingly, he played the ace of spades and another to the nine. When that failed, three or more clubs with East would allow a ruff of the fourth club in the dummy if needed. Declarer saw a better chance, with a dummy reversal. He ruffed a heart, then used a club entry and two diamond entries to ruff dummy’s last two hearts and finally, the third diamond. After all the ruffing, dummy remained with the spade queen and two high clubs. One of the clubs was the entry to draw East’s last trump and South then claimed his contract. It’s a close-run thing, but an alternative (also successful) line would have been to win the heart ace, cash the spade ace, then cross on clubs twice immediately to ruff two hearts; then use the two diamond entries to ruff a heart and a diamond. As long as declarer has kept a trump lower than the queen in hand, he would then be able to cross in trumps to draw the last trump. This plan would prevent a defender discarding from a doubleton club on the third or fourth heart or the third diamond.

From the editor’s desk We live in such a beautiful world. Last night I saw a video of a beautiful setting sun high above Ashkelon. The video then zoomed out to show three rockets landing directly onto apartment buildings, which immediately were engulfed in flames and thick smoke. A female voice is heard screaming ‘Ima!’ Another video showed the beautiful Israeli sky, stars twinkling, and then as the video zooms out multiple rockets flying across the sky, and mass rioting going on down below. A world with such potential for beauty and goodness, turned ugly by anger and violence. Where does this violence start? Perhaps with men in suits? If you could ask Jews who helped vote Biden in, what would they say now? For all the criticism aimed at Trump by lefties, and Biden’s camp in particular, Israel had peace when Trump was around, even with the Embassy move. Biden’s former boss Obama started more wars than any other President in US history. Biden himself may just have started World War Three. By giving Palestinians a voice again, he has been a major factor in recent escalations. Jonathan Pollard in his first public speech this week implied on Yom Yerushalayim that Biden is hugely to blame, a statement echoed by former President Donald Trump who mentioned how

Aftermath of a rocket attack in Israel

It is about time that the lefty media, including sadly many Jews and people on the street who believe the Palestinian propaganda wake up and realise the reality on the ground. peaceful the world was when he was President. As Pollard said, we could have taken the whole old city in 1967. We have regretted it ever since. It is about time that the lefty media, including sadly many Jews

and people on the street who believe the Palestinian propaganda wake up and realise the reality on the ground. There simply cannot be peace with the Palestinians when all they want is every single Jewish man woman and child dead.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

The Palestinian rockets have killed more Arabs than Jews. Hamas do not care about killing their own as long as they kill some Jews too. No amount of land given to them will make a drop of difference. Just look at Gaza; enough said. Perhaps other people in suits are to blame? All the newsreaders who refuse to acknowledge fact over perceived fact. Read James Marlow’s article where he explores all the lies of the media in detail. We live in a world where gullible and naive people believe and spread one sided and untrue reports in our antisemitic media. The BBC, Sky News and many others this week ranted on about how Israeli soldiers have killed Palestinians. Of course, they omitted how the Palestinian man in question had first murdered a civilian and injured two others. When showing pictures and videos of the war, it is always Gaza first. Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely once again stood up righteously to more brutal onslaughts from the BBC’s Jewish inquisitor Emily Maitlis, and the Pro Palestinian Adam Bolton from Sky News. So just how can we light up our world with beauty once more, rather than light up the night sky with rockets and bombs? Perhaps the only thing to come out of this is to realise that Mashiach will have to be a quite brilliant individual to sort all this tzorus out.

Kiddush return to shul

In hospital over Shavuot? Cheesecake is on its way!

To mark the upcoming festival, the Hospital Kosher Meals Service (HKMS) is offering Shavuot meals accompanied by strawberry cheesecake. Catering Managers in over 60 hospitals across Greater London have been contacted, letting them know about the significance of Shavuot meals, particularly the importance of dessert! Michael Freedman, Trustee of HKMS

said, “It is so important that, as well as having quick and easy access to healthy kosher food every day, Jewish people are able to mark Shabbat and Yom Tov in a special way when in hospital or other care settings. We hope the offer of Shavuot cheesecake across London will brighten the experience of those marking the festival under difficult circumstances”.

Chabad brings joy across Manchester

United Synagogue services can end with kiddush from the first day of Shavuot. With Prime Minister Boris Johnson announcing the UK is moving to Step 3 of the government roadmap this week an easing of COVID-19 measures means communal meals can restart initially outdoors and weddings can accommodate 30 guests. Jo Grose, US Communities Director, noted, “We look forward to bringing back more programming and services for children and young families as well as social activities and support groups for senior members. We will be reviewing all our protocols once the government publishes the next version of its places of worship and community centre guidance.” The US, meanwhile, has launched a confidential survey of its 38,000 members to ascertain how its communities and central office have performed during the pandemic. The survey will establish members thoughts on returning to shul, attending programmes online and in person. The survey is the biggest listening exercise the US has undertaken for years. Results will help professional teams plan for the coming year. IntelliSurvey is administering the survey for the US. Michael Goldstein, US President, said, “The more responses we receive, the better the data will be and the better we can

respond to our members’ needs.” The US, meanwhile, has launched a self-guided walking tour of London. ‘The Jews of London’ is part of the charity’s 150th anniversary celebrations. Written by Rabbi Yoni Birnbaum and the US’s Ben Vos, the tour begins at the Barbican and ends at Fournier Street, Spitalfields, taking in nearly 1,000 years of Jewish history. Over 15 stops, the tour looks at a plethora of material including what brought Jews to London, the expulsion of 1290 and the Jews’ readmission over three centuries later, development of London’s Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities, formation of the US, Jewish immigration from eastern Europe and development of kosher food. Each stop has a map link, written directions and podcast at each location. Photos and original documents bring places to life. The tour can also be enjoyed from home for those not able to travel. Vos said, “Creating this tour was a joy, we visit sites in London and tell Jewish stories people might not know, creating a narrative rich with drama, intrigue and even individual heroism.” The free tour is accessed via www.thejewsoflondon.com<http://www.thejewsoflondon.com

BY ESTHER ULLMANN Chabad Community Care have been very active in Manchester. They have brought joy to seven care homes across from North and South Manchester as well as to patients in hospital. They also provide lifts, meals on wheels and packages. Recently they put on a music event in the Park Lodge Garden for the residents, led by Mr Nesanel Bamberger in conjunction with the Freliich organisation for Lag Baomer. The South Manchester activities are led by Rabbi Dovid Jaffe. In North Manchester it is under Mr Richard Blackstone and Mrs Sivan Lachs. The overall count of packages

Aish Campus runs Jewish heritage day trip to York

Aish Campus North Day Trip

While Jewish Heritage trips to Morocco and Poland did not go ahead this year, Aish UK have been ensuring that students are still able to learn and engage with Jewish Heritage experiences right here in the UK. Last week a group of 20 students (in bubbles of six) participated in an educational journey through York, journeying back 1,000 years to the first stone houses in England, which typically belonged to affluent Jews. Rabbi Shauly Strom, Director of Aish Northern Campuses, led a tour around the Old City of York and students tracked the rich history of Jewish success and infamous anti-semitism. The group visited ancient synagogue sites, the famous Jewbury cemetery culminating in a keynote address at the foot of Clifford’s tower, infamous for one of the most tragic

Jewish sites in medieval history. Students were also able to relax and spend time in each other’s company with a boat trip down the River Ouse and a barbecue in the local park. Rebbetzin Adina Strom said “Students from different backgrounds were able to experience a fun and inspiring day leaving with a feeling of strong Jewish pride despite having visited places of Jewish tragedy.” Danielle, a participant added “We had a meaningful, impactful and fun experience. After such a hard year, we were able to tour around and hear about the history of the Jews of York whilst also having the opportunity to bond and socialise safely in bubbles. I can’t wait to be part of many more (trips) in the future!”

Pre-Shavuot learning event brings people together

Ealier this week, over 70 Immanuel College families joined together for a session of preShavuot learning over Zoom entitled ‘’Hi, Meet G-d.’’ The event marked the first in the ‘Together at Home Series’, bringing together

pupils, their parents and teachers. Families received source sheets and a box of milky treats in advance. Of the evening, one parent commented: “such an impressive evening, quality learning and great fun. A real communal feel. Can’t wait for the next event”.

World Mizrachi launches fundraising campaign With many gap-year program budgets for foreign students under pressure from rising costs and lower revenue because of the global pandemic, World Mizrachi, the umbrella group for Religious Zionism, has launched the fundraising initiative called “Ki MiTzion Teitzei Torah” to help 21 institutions. On top of the additional funds needed for programming, many of the yeshivot and seminaries, along with Mizrachi, anticipate a growth in need-based scholarships based on the economic hardship caused by the pandemic. The institutions joining this year’s event include Amudim; Ateres Bnos Yerushalayim; Baer Miriam – Maayanot; Bnot Torah Institute – Sharfman’s; Derech Etz Chaim; Gates of Zion; Machon Maayan; Meorot Yerushalayim; Michlelet Mevaseret Yerushalayim (MMY); Midreshet Emunah v’Omanut; Midreshet HaRova; Rinas Bais Yaakov; Tomer Devorah; Yeshivas Ohr Yerushalayim; Yeshivat Ashreinu; Yeshivat HaKotel; Yeshivat Lev HaTorah; Yeshivat Migdal HaTorah; Yeshivat Sha’arei Mevaseret Zion; Yeshivat Torat Shraga; and Yeshivat Yishrei Lev. “The gap-year experience in Israel is a pivotal time in so many Orthodox Jewish young adults’ lives, where they come to experience Torah and Judaism within a framework that sets them up for religious and communal leadership roles and helps to influence the depth of their relationships with and commitment to Torah, Israel and the destiny of the Jewish people,” said Rav Doron Perez, executive chairman of World Mizrachi. “In the current academic year, so many

institutions were forced to spend more per capita than in previous years, in some cases draining accounts that otherwise would be allocated for future years’ scholarships or even multi-year building refurbishments. Our hope is that this event not only temporarily helps these schools, but also help get them back on the financial track they were on before the pandemic began,” he added. Last summer, a similar fundraising effort raised more than US$5 million in order to help yeshivot and seminaries offset the increased infrastructure costs associated with operating their programs during the pandemic. The campaign will go live on the CauseMatch platform, an online fundraising portal, from May 23-24, where each institution will have its own campaign page. The schools will employ a host of marketing and fundraising strategies across social media, and by engaging their supporters, alumni, and student networks. For more information, or to donate, please visit: www.cmatch.me/kimitzion. Mizrachi is the global Religious Zionist movement, spreading Torat Eretz Yisrael across the world and strengthening the bond between the international Jewish community and the State of Israel. Mizrachi has represented the Torah voice and the Orthodox movement in the World Zionist Organization for almost 120 years. Based in Jerusalem and with branches across the globe, Mizrachi – an acronym for merkaz ruchani (spiritual center) – was founded in 1902. For more information visit www.mizrachi.org.

LSJS launches a new women’s programme “Baderech” Last Thursday over 60 women joined the online launch of LSJS‘s new women’s programme “Baderech”. This exciting new project is aimed at women who have completed the Susi Bradfield Educational Leadership Programme, Ma’ayan or other similar courses or those interested in developing their skills as educators. The programme aims to nurture and invest in women educators by creating an inspiring and supportive forum. The launch event featured a keynote address by Dr Yael Ziegler, a senior lecturer in Tanakh at Herzog College and Matan. Joanne Greenaway, Chief Executive of LSJS, who is herself a graduate of both the Bradfield and Ma’ayan programmes said “it was such a pleasure to come together with so many talented women who care about contributing to the future of the Jewish community. We are looking forward to leveraging this community to create an even greater impact

and to helping these women to continue their journeys and become increasingly accomplished.” Aviva Kaufmann, a graduate of the Susi Bradfield Educational Leadership Programme, said “For me, working with LSJS to put this programme together seemed the natural next step after the Bradfield programme which taught me about both teaching and leadership. Baderech aims to provide women with the skills, the confidence and the opportunities to teach and make an impact on the Jewish community.” The next Baderech event is a workshop taking place on 1st July on Zoom with Dr Rona Novick, Dean, Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education, Yeshiva University. Norwood launches first-ever referral-free Multidisciplinary Advice Clinic Norwood announced the launch of a pilot programme for parents anxious about their child’s development and unsure about how to access appropriate support, to mark Mental Health Awareness Week. The Multidisciplinary Advice Clinic will serve as an entry-point for parents seeking holistic support for their children but unsure of what specific support is available and appropriate for their child’s care. Norwood’s first-ever non-referral based holistic programme of its kind, the free service will run as a pilot on Tuesday 25th May and is made possible thanks to Norwood’s status as a charity. Norwood hopes that not only will the clinic make support more accessible for stressed parents in need, but also that it will help demystify the world of educational/occupational support, which is often a minefield, as well as providing an entry point and specific advice on how and where to access appropriate longerterm support, where required.

The free 20-minute sessions with a choice of a Norwood-designated Specialist Teacher, Occupational Therapist or Speech & Language Therapist is aimed at any Jewish child attending a mainstream school who has any form of additional educational needs or other barriers to learning. This may be indicated by the child’s slow progress or regression in their academic ability, behavioural issues, reading and writing/numeracy issues, poor self-esteem/self perception as a learner and a reluctance to attend school or disengagement from learning. To discuss their specific needs and book one of the limited availability slots, parents can contact the Norwood team on: 07395 852051; sue.leonard@norwood.org. uk (Teaching and OT enquiries) 07395 852049; andrea.reid@norwood.org. uk (SLT enquiries)

Norwood and Kisharon beautify London shuls through ‘Light Up A Life’s’ special Shavuot project A unique event run by ‘Light Up A Life’, enabled 70 residents from Kisharon College and Norwood to make colourful flower centerpieces. These beautiful works of art were put up in United Synagogues in honour of Shavuot. Light Up A Life, part of ‘Better World Charity’ based in Finchley and directed by Rabbi Shaul Rosenblatt, distributed art packs and ran online sessions. London artist Celine Mazal Fitoussi together with project lead Esther Radnor led the sessions during which residents safely created the crepe paper flowers from their own care homes. Rabbi Akiva Rosenblatt, of Hadley Wood United Synagogue remarked: ‘The flowers in shul remind us of Mount Sinai, and how we the Jewish people stood united with a genuine love and respect for one another. What better way to illustrate this than with flowers from organisations who exemplify these values’. Aviva Braunold from Kisharon commented: ‘It was a privilege for Kisharon college to work together with Esther from “Light up a Life” and artist Celine Fitoussi to create beautiful flowers to decorate Hadley wood shul for Shavuot. Stanmore goes global After children’s services were allowed to resume, Stanmore have been pulling out various stops to bring its young families back. Spearheaded by Programming Manager Mirele Mordecai who has initiated ideas like Toddler Bunnies to give out to toddlers (who then take them home to accessorise) and themed kiddush packs for each week. Each Shabbos is a different country, and a quiz is included too. Moving services outside was a real help, and the families have really enjoyed being back. There are further steps for more exciting initiatives.

£40 million care home’s first residents arrive BY MALCOLM GINSBURG Last Tuesday saw the arrival of the first resident for Nightingale Hammerson’s new £40 million Hammerson House in Bishops Avenue. Each entry is dealt with on an individual basis with a steady intake over the coming months. The home has a maximum capacity of 116 but that number will not be reached for sometime writes Malcolm Ginsberg. The previous week Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis had offered a Chanukat Habayit prayer whilst on a visit and affixed a mezuzah to the main entrance. The Nightingale Hammerson charity was created in 2012, the amalgamation of two of the most famous organisations in the Jewish community catering for elderly residential care. Originally “The Home for Aged Jews” it was established in Hackney in the late eighteenth century. In 1904 the banker and philanthropist Lord Wandsworth (1844-1912) purchased a large mansion and its grounds in Clapham for £5,200 and donated it to the charity. Extensively rebuilt over the years, in the 1960s the Home was renamed ‘Nightingale House’. Famous residents have included Ted ‘Kid’ Lewis world welterweight champion known as ‘The Aldgate Sphinx’. Today the home looks after around 150 residents with a recently developed 40-bed specialist dementia unit and 20 self-contained extra care suites. A successful property tycoon Lewis Hammerson purchased 50 The Bishops Avenue as a home for his wife Sue and family in the fifties. He suddenly died in 1958 at the early age of 42 before they could move in. Sue could not bring herself to live in the property and in keeping with her husband’s community and philanthropic interests developed the house as a residential home for the Jewish aged. His company, Hammerson Ltd, went on to develop the Brent Cross Shopping Centre, but today’s Hammerson Plc has no involvement with Bishops Avenue, although the family is still very much involved. The original Hammerson House was demolished in 2018 and in spite of the problems associated with the pandemic the project has been completed within the original timeframe. Last week Jewish Weekly was privileged to take a tour around the property escorted by the chief executive Helen Simmons, prior to the first resident arriving. The opening has been timed to coincide with the relaxation of the Covid rules which means that visitors are allowed, but under the strictest hygiene supervision. These rules will also apply for the up to 200 staff working in the building when fully

operational. Catering is outside sourced by Caterplus, Elior UK with a full-time shomer on the premises. Helen has been CEO of Nightingale Hammerson for over seven years and previously Director of Finance at the Diocese of London, Jewish Care, Multiple Sclerosis Society and Crisis. For six years Helen was a trustee of the National Council for Voluntary Organizations (NCVO), and trustee of CFG, RSCM, CAF and L’Ouverture. Entering the building is more like arriving at an exclusive hotel, the large and airy vestibule including a reception desk adjoining a café area and conservatory. Nearby is the multi-purpose concert hall, available for outside use. Sitting in the lounge area residents and visitors can

enjoy the views of the landscaped gardens. There is a hair salon on the ground floor. The whole building is technologically advanced with soft touch switches where possible. Everything is very simple for those unable to grasp the latest software, or the devices to enable them. Hammerson House has four floors, encompassing six households, each specialising in different care provisions for residential, nursing and dementia care. Each household has its own living room, activities kitchen, dining room, winter terrace, ‘multi-sensory’ (Namaste) room. There is a spa bathroom on every floor supporting the work of the therapy department. All the bedrooms have ensuite wet rooms, ergonomically designed furniture and

specialist beds to make life as comfortable and practical for residents. A nice touch is a shelf in the corridor outside each bedroom where residents, when they want to, can put up named pictures of themselves and personal mementos. It’s a good way of remembering which is your room and getting to know your neighbours. Each household offers a more peaceful area of residence, set apart from the busy ground floor areas. There is a GP on site offering a full suite of health services. Helen pointed out that pro bono guidance has been given on the hospitality aspects of the home. “This has enabled us to provide a level of hospitality service, housekeeping, to provide better standards and to do this efficiently.” She noted that Nightingale was the first care home to integrate a children’s nursery onsite. “We are continuing our pioneering work in this area and will work with a variety of local nurseries and primary schools. “We are innovative in the way we incorporate all of our therapies onsite, in our therapy suite, but we also take our expertise, and our teams visit households and resident’s rooms directly. We offer exercise classes on the households and also run a large falls prevention programme.” She deftly summed up the whole experience. “Our residents always come first, in all that we do. Our approach to care is full of innovation and our family of staff and volunteers have a ‘je ne sais quoi’ that lead others to tell us we are a jewel in the community. However, this does not mean

From the front line…

An end of restrictions is in sight. Proceed with caution!

BY JACQUELINE CURZON Sophie Scholl is a name little known, but she is in fact an iconic figure in her native country of Germany, with an extraordinary story. This weekend would be the 100th birthday of this young lady who stood up to Adolf Hitler and ultimately paid for it with her life. Sophie was born in 1921 in the town of Forchtenberg, where her father was mayor. By the time she reached her teens, Hitler was running the country and, like many non-Jewish youths, Sophie and her older brother Hans joined the Hitler Youth movement and the League of German Girls, but they quickly grew disillusioned with fascism and the burgeoning antisemitism around them. Hans and Sophie moved to Munich to study at university and whilst there formed a small group of anti Nazi protesters. Their group of six were known as the "White Rose resistance," advocating non violent opposition. She was ultimately betrayed to the Gestapo and both she and Hans were interrogated and sentenced to death by guillotine. Despite being tortured, they refused to betray the rest of the group, but the authorities swiftly tracked them down and they were all executed. To commemorate the centenary of her birth a special German coin is being minted, which is a lovely way to remember such a special young woman. An obituary of note this week was that of Yitzhak Arad (94), former chairman of Yad Vashem, the Jewish Holocaust Museum. Born in Święciany, 50 miles north of Vilnius, he and his family lived happily until the German occupation. In 1941 the 15 year old Yitchak Rudnicki managed to escape and flee to Belarus. Of a population of 3,000, most Jews were executed and the remaining 250 were forced to work as skilled tradesmen for the Germans. Arad and 10 friends decided to return some months later, but were captured. They were lucky not to be executed, and instead were tasked to clean confiscated Soviet weapons for the Nazis. In a massive act of bravery, he managed to smuggle some of these weapons out, which later came in useful when they met up - and fought with - Soviet partisans, known as the Markov Brigade. Ultimately 200,000 Lithuanians were murdered, mainly by collaborators. After the war he moved to Israel, where he changed his name to Arad, and after military service, he accepted the post of Director at Yad Vashem which he ran for 21 years. He was a highly academic individual, taking a BA in History, MA in Holocaust Studies, and laterally a PhD on the destruction of the Vilnius Jews. After retiring from Yad Vashem he taught Jewish history at Tel Aviv University and published extensively. We say Shalom, and thank you to an amazing man. This week's data for covid deaths

Jacqueline Curzon PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY

recorded figures in single digits, including zero deaths on Monday. Social distancing rules are now being replaced with guidance, restaurants and pubs will now serve food and drinks inside, overnight stays in hotels and B&Bs are back on the menu, and face masks are no longer compulsory in schools. Museums and cinemas will be reopening, and if you’re lucky, so might your doctor's surgery. To the return of these common sense steps, I can only say, Hallelujah. It is still unclear if any rules or guidance will differ between the vaccinated and the non vaccinated. Anyhow, you now have permission to hug your friends and relatives, although you are cautioned not to get carried away…. I can put money on Ms Sturgeon rejecting even a token Boris bump, far less acquiescing to a Hadrian hug. To those of us who have recently ignored the ban on the most minor of physical contact without misadventure, we say ‘about time, Mr J.’ Handshakes will now be timetabled for next January, with gender specific hand-holding at simchas, by 2023. On a more serious note, a new enemy has emerged: mucormycosis. Ring any bells? Me neither, but pay attention because this is a seriously bad bit of news. (Skip the next few sentences if you are very squeamish.) It is a black fungus commonly found in soil and rotting vegetables. It can infect the sinuses, lungs and brain in immunocompromised individuals and is appearing in recovering covid patients in India. With 300,000 daily covid cases emerging, things are therefore looking very bleak. Before coronavirus the fungus was rarely seen, but hospitals in India are now seeing multiple cases each day. It has a mortality rate of 50% according to the CDC, and in the worst cases doctors have needed to remove eyes, the nose and parts of the jaw bone to save the patient's life. Dr Prashant Rahate, in Nagpur, says the Mucor ‘is playing absolute havoc.’ In Gujarat every hospital will have a dedicated mucormycosis ward. Medication to treat it {intravenous antifungal injections} is

generally unaffordable for most Indians, at a cost of £33 per day. Maybe the UK could send some antifungal IVs and try and prevent further misery? In Nepal, climbers on Everest are being asked to bring empty oxygen cylinders back down, as the country’s healthcare system approaches collapse with a surge in covid cases. Given the season must be over by now, there should be no need for climbers to take them UP. Someone is always in charge, be it in business, education or politics, but not all those in charge are leaders. Sir Keir Starmer, rather more parve than fleishig in the kaleidoscope of politics, is unfortunately proving such an anomaly:- Captain of a struggling ship which has set a course for collision. His reluctance to prescribe meaningful change since he took over in opposition, has rankled with supporters, who have voted with their feet. For a former DPP without natural political acumen to put forward a pro-Remain candidate in Hartlepool was surely a suicidal mission in a town with one of the highest Leave electorates. Misjudgments and his general lack of concrete policy and political gravitas has resulted in the loss of 300 Labour council seats. Angela Rayner has now been promoted to Deputy Leader [also Shadow first Secretary of State, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and Shadow Secretary of State for the future of work]. Despite this catalogue of portfolios, she has been replaced as Party Chairman by Anneliese Dodds. Now, they do say ‘if you want a job done, ask a busy woman,’ so Ms Dodds and Raynor may find themselves being promoted even higher, if Starmer doesn’t get his act together. E-scooters are becoming all the rage. Who hasn’t had to swerve to avoid a collision from the silent pavement predator? This week a 3 year old child was seriously injured after a pavement ‘hit and run’ from a scooter. He was struck from behind, the rider fell off but quickly remounted and rode off without stopping. To clarify the position on e-scooters, they are legal to buy in the UK, but illegal to be ridden on pavements or roads, and may only be ridden on private land. Those joyfully and selfishly meandering along roads and pavements do take note of this, and also of the £300 fine which you might receive, plus points on your driving license if you are a driver. Let’s wish the little lad a full recovery. In another unbelievable incident, James Gibbons (34) was stabbed by a youth of 16. The self employed plumber had gone to the aid of another man, and then died in an altercation. Mr Gibbons' family said ‘he had spent the day celebrating the second birthday of his twin daughters.‘ How sad that so often the Good Samaritan loses their life, defending others. A posthumous award would surely be appropriate in such cases.

I am sad to mention the passing of my good friend Nan, from Glasgow, whom my mother had known since school (1940s), and who later was her bridesmaid. Over the lifetime they had known each other Nan had proved an enigmatic and outgoing lady, talented in the dramatic arts and dance, and who was still active in her 80s. Whilst many might boast of having a long life, few can claim to have had such a full and happy life. She was simply put, a whirlwind of activity and positivity. The last time I visited her, some months back, she spontaneously broke into a song and dance routine she had choreographed some years back. Like so many people today, her book of life was summarily snapped closed by an advancing cancer. Whilst looking through their 1947 yearbook, I came across a poem which she had written, aged 15. The poem is called: “Ssh! Don’t Tell!” There was a young lady called Ellen, who enter’d a contest at spellin’, when once she got stuck, she had awful luck, for one of the rules was ‘no telling’. I will struggle to move these little mementos on as they feel too personal to just drop into recycling, but I might offer them to her extended family. And, of course, I still have jotters and notebooks of my own. !! Poignantly, I wonder if any of my own family will keep these or the souvenir journals I compiled of my travels across Europe and Africa. My Russian trip is still provisionally on the cards, and all being equal, I fully intend to document my {likely hilarious} exploits and experiences of that journey also. And sadly, I end with a story of a baby minke whale which got lost and ended up 100 miles out of its usual habitat. As our smallest whales in UK waters, minkes can grow to 10 metres, and are common in the North Sea, so it is unclear how it then ended up in the Thames, near Richmond Lock, stuck on boat rollers. Teams from RNLI and British Divers Marine Life Rescue did their utmost to save the whale, but it managed to wriggle free and swam off, ending up in Teddington Lock. It was then obvious that it was seriously injured from being stranded amongst vines and weeds, and pushed up against the brick wall of the river. After assessment from experts and a vet at London Zoo, the decision was made to put the whale down. Jewish Women’s Aid launches fundraiser BY MICAELA BLITZ Jewish Women’s Aid launch fundraiser This week, Jewish Women’s Aid launched a fundraising drive to expand its education department for Jewish youth. This was in response to nationally reported allegations of widespread harassment and abuse of young women and girls by their peers posted on the Everyone’s Invited website. Over 15,000 anonymous testimonies have been submitted to the Everyone’s Invited site since March 2021, all of which share personal experiences of sexual harassment, abuse, and assault within UK schools. Included in this number were over 30 posts relating to Jewish schools and Jewish Societies, and as a result of these reports, Jewish Women’s Aid have been proactively meeting with school leaders and offering schools and youth movements support to develop a culture of respect within the community’s educational settings. Since schools re-opened in March,

Jewish Women’s Aid have run 26 sessions on healthy relationships in three London schools, and have further sessions scheduled for five schools in London and Manchester over the coming weeks. In order to increase the capacity of their education team to allow more sessions to be planned and delivered, Jewish Women’s Aid need to urgently raise £200,000. Their existing education programme has reached over 3,000 Jewish young people and educational professionals, but whilst

this is considerable reach, this is often only for one-off sessions. They are keen to develop a more ‘whole school approach’ which will reflect each school’s own ethos and needs. Money raised will also help to expand the number of schools leaders and education professionals they are able to support, and to begin to directly interact with parents, many of whom have contacted the organisation for information and support in light of these recent reports.

Naomi Dickson, CEO of Jewish Women’s Aid, feels that these reports have highlighted many issues facing young people, and as a result there has been an increase in calls received from schools, and parents, as well as young women and girls. “What we’re hearing is that some girls feel scared, unheard and preyed upon, and boys feel accused and unsure how to respond. We have the experience and expertise at Jewish Women’s Aid to provide them with what they need: the tools to shape a culture of consent and respect, where sexual harassment has no place. But we can’t do that without additional funding, which is why we’ve taken the decision to call on the community for their support.” If you would like to make a donation, please go to: jwa.org.uk/donate For anyone seeking help or advice, please contact the JWA helpline – 0808 801 0500 or contact via JWA web chat at jwa.org.uk

Fiamma Aromas BY MICAELA BLITZ For Sarah David and Emma Rosenblatt what started off as a sociable brunch between friends ended up becoming more of a business meeting, which led to the pair starting a company together. When the two friends started discussing life, work and Covid, Sarah, who had worked in the events industry for many years, shared with Emma that she was looking for a new challenge. “I had thought about setting up a company making and selling wax melts for a while but had no idea where to start with it. I have used them myself for a long time and wanted to make others aware of how beneficial they can be to wellbeing. Emma managed to persuade me to think more seriously about it, and by the next day we had created Fiamma Aromas together.” Sarah came up with the idea to use the word Fiamma which means ‘flame’ in Italian, in honour of her own Italian heritage. Fiamma Aromas relates not only to the wax melts themselves, but also to the ethos and long-term vision of the company they have created. As Emma explains, “A flame is always reaching higher, shining its light for the benefit of others and a flame is neither physical nor spiritual. We want to encourage a more mindful and conscious world, bridging the gap between the physical and digital wellbeing space, giving people the tools to quieten their minds and tap into their own being through our products.” All of their products are handmade by Sarah and Emma themselves using organic, vegan materials which reflect the three core principles of their business, wellbeing, sustainability and consciousness. All the packaging used for their products is plastic-free and eco-friendly and each product comes with a small handwritten gift tag with an inspiring note of wisdom. Producing soy wax melts can take around two weeks to cure once they have been made to ensure the fragrance is at its optimum and are available in four different fragrances which capture different moods – comfort, relax, spirit and warmth. Compared to scented candles, the fragrances of wax melts last around 40% longer, and they generally burn for around eight hours which is double the amount of time of most candles making them more cost-effective. Furthermore, as the melts are made from organic soy wax, unlike regular candles which are made out of a paraffin wax, Fiamma Aromas wax melts won’t emit any nasty paraffin

and petroleum derivatives into your home - making them safe for babies and pet-friendly. Since launching their company in November 2020, they have been overwhelmed with the response they have received for their products. When their website went live, they sold out three times over. A recent post by a major influencer has also helped to increase people’s awareness of their company and has helped boost orders. Now that lockdown restrictions are starting to ease, they are looking forward to being

able to take their products out to markets and fairs. They recently did their first market and had a great response to their products. As Emma explains, “The reaction we had was amazing and it was great to be able to share our products with a wider audience and speak to other people about them rather than just friends and family!” The pair have also been busy launching a new product to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week (10th – 16th May). ‘A Moment to Pause’, is a gift set consisting of 14 mini mindfulness candles (with an approx burn time of 20minutes), a handmade gold clay candle holder and 14 cards with thoughtful and mindful thoughts and messages to encourage reflection and some quiet space to ‘fuel the soul’. Emma and Sarah believe that one of the reasons that they work so well together as a team is that they have different skills that they bring. Emma’s marketing back-

ground has helped to develop a brand, including its mission and purpose, designing and building the website and marketing the business. Whilst Sarah’s events management skills means that she is the creative, ensuring every last detail is thought of and is responsible for the wellbeing content. They also have a shared vision that is central to everything that they do which relates to self-care and wellbeing, and they think particularly at the moment these are important. As Sarah explains, “We aim to give our customers the tools to be able to tap into their own innate wellbeing, and channel this to be able to fuel their mind, body and soul. The aromas that we use have great healing properties, as well as filling people’s homes with these powerful, uplifting, and calming fragrances.” To find out more about their products, visit www.fiammaaromas.com

Meaning and Purpose Part 1

13 MAY 2021

This article is part of a serialisation of the book ‘Go to Yourself’ transformation through Jewish wisdom and Psychology’. The author Aryeh Sampson is a psychotherapist based in North London and counsel’s online. It combines approaches from psychotherapy and Jewish wisdom to address many psychological issues that modern man is faced with. This includes overcoming anxiety, low self esteem, improving relationships and creating a greater sense of meaning and spirituality. BY ARYEH SAMPSON If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when? (Ethics of the Fathers 1:14) We all have a drive to express ourselves in a meaningful way, to make the world a better place — to make a difference. Jewish thought teaches that everyone has a unique role to play, and that one should view the world as their own personal responsibility. The Talmud explains, a person is obligated to say, “the world was created for me,” which means the world is my responsibility. One of the reasons why Kaddish, is said for a person who passes away is that there is something missing in the world without his or her unique contribution. Kaddish re¬minds and motivates the congregation to draw inspiration from the life of the deceased in order to fill that gap. Victor Frankl, a psychotherapist and Holocaust survivor, proposed that the drive for meaning is mankind’s primary motivation. While in Auschwitz, he observed that fellow prisoners who had a sense of purpose showed a greater propensity for survival. He expressed a similar sentiment to that held by Jewish thought. “Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life. He cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated, thus everyone’s task is unique as his specific opportunity.” But when we don’t express our talents in a purposeful way, inner turmoil results; this can cause psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. A story is told about Reb Zusha. One day, his students found him crying. “Why are you crying?” they asked. He answered, “When I die, God won’t ask me why weren’t you Abraham, Isaac , or Jacob, but I will be asked, why weren’t you Zusha?!” Victor Frankl explained that without a sense of purpose, a person will feel an emptiness, an existential vacuum. He gives the example of someone who has free time on the weekend and

experiences a void, as he becomes aware of the lack of content in his life. This experience is also common at birthdays and other life milestones. Midlife crises, a lack of fulfillment at work, and the empty nest syndrome can also be manifestations

Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto explained that people avoid facing the deeper issues of life, such as expressing themselves more meaningfully, by keeping themselves so busy that they never have the time to think about such things. Frankl described this phenomena as “an un¬heard cry for meaning,” wherein people mask their inner void by pursuing power, status, material success, and physical pleasure. Laziness can also play a role in creating an inertia that prevents us from pursuing a more meaningful life. We may think, “Why should I bother to strive to contribute more?” As King Solomon explained, the lazy person invents many rationalizations. As he wrote in Proverbs, “The lazy man rationalizes, saying, ‘There is a lion on the road, a lion is on the highways,’ as an excuse not to travel to study from his teacher.” Fear, worry, and a lack of self-confidence are other causes, which may have their roots in the person’s upbringing. A child who receives critical feedback and discouragement about his aspirations and

A child who receives critical feedback and discouragement about his aspirations and abilities may then lack the confidence to pursue his dreams and goals later in life. of the pain of a lack of purpose. When the renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung experi¬enced an acute midlife crisis, it prompted him to develop theories which proposed that the passage through midlife is a spiritual/religious journey, and embodies a search for a deeper meaning, value, and purpose in life. We are now going to look at how we express our drive for mean-ing, and how this alleviates psychological suffering.

STAGE 1: AWARENESS

To begin, we need to gain awareness into our drive for meaning and what is holding us back from expressing it more deeply. Let’s look at a few common examples.

abilities may then lack the confidence to pursue his dreams and goals later in life. Aaron, a tax lawyer, had a loving family and was well-respected by his peers. At the age of forty, he started to gamble and drink. After losing large sums of money, he decided to enter therapy. Aaron discovered that although he appeared to be externally happy, he was unfulfilled. His unhappiness was rooted in the fact that he found his work very boring and that he had never wanted to go into law in the first place. As a child, he possessed a strong sense of social justice and wanted to become a social worker. But he was ridiculed by his parents who didn’t consider

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

it a sufficiently well-paid and prestigious job for their son. As a result of this ridicule, Aaron developed a terrible fear of doing things that would bring him ridicule from others, and he ignored his desire to become a social worker. Once we have become aware of what is holding us back, we can move on to the stage of control, where we look at how to overcome the obstacles.

STAGE 2: CONTROL

2(a) Thought Taking time to introspect and to think about these issues is an important way to move forward. Rabbinical thought recommend setting aside daily and weekly times for soul searching and contemplation. Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto writes that just as a businessman sets aside regular times to evaluate if his business is succeeding and how it can be improved, we too should set aside regular times to introspect and evaluate our own lives. Here are two important questions that might be helpful to contemplate: 1. What are your dreams, aspirations, and passions? 2. In which way could you more fully express your talents and benefit others? Rabbi Noach Weinberg, zt”l, was fond of asking people two other questions to focus their attentions on addressing these issues. “Are you eating to live or living to eat?” People would answer adamantly, “Eating to live!” He would then reply, “If you are eating to live, what you are living for?” He would also ask, “Do you know what you are willing to die for?” And then continue, “If you don’t know what you are willing to die for, you haven’t begun to live, and if you do know, live for it!”.

For many Jews Shavout is best known as the ‘Cheesecake festival’. With the rise in recent years of people avoiding dairy for health and allergy reasons, I have been considering their options. Whether you are dairy or lactose intolerant or following a vegan diet there is no reason for you to be excluded from the ‘cheesecake experience’. Traditionally cheesecake has three stages – base, filling and topping. Each is quite different in taste and texture but still should complement the others. The base can be made using shortcrust pastry made with non-dairy margarine. This can be enriched with a spoon of non-dairy yoghurt. Other bases can be made with crushed vegan cookies and coconut oil, chopped nuts with pureed dates or other dried fruits, oats mixed

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

with plant-based milk or a thin layer of dark chocolate and nuts. On to your filling – ‘creamy’ is the key texture. Soak macadamia or cashew nuts overnight and blend until smooth with coconut cream and vanilla. Vegan cream cheese with coconut oil, lemon juice and flour is another ‘cheese’ filling. Use maple syrup, apple puree, vegan jellies, agave nectar, bananas, peanut butter, caramel sauce and fruit purees to sweeten and thicken. The most important thing to remember is that your filling needs to be well blended – no lumps at all – to ensure a smooth luxurious cake. The topping should sit easily with the rest of the cake. Try fresh fruit, fruit purees, melted chocolate, caramelized nuts, cocoa powder, coffee icing drizzle, vegan toffees, or sweets; these can be used alone or added to the non-dairy cream cheese or non-dairy yoghurt. Tahini, icing sugar and non-dairy cream cheese makes a great halva tasting finish. As you can see nobody has to miss out on a truly delicious Shavuot! ASK THE RABBI

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Dear Rabbi In a few days’ time we will be reading the Ten Commandments. I wonder as to their relevance in today’s day and age. Don’t you agree that they are a little outdated? Justine Dear Justine Really? Have we stopped coveting one another’s possessions? Do people no longer steal from one another? Is everyone genuinely faithful in their relationships? While they are every bit as relevant today, I would like to demonstrate how these commandments spill over into every facet of our lives. Let’s consider in the context of relationships. 1) I am the Lord your G-d: I have met with people who are still not sure they are with the right person. They have been married for decades but still they wonder: “Was I too rushed or immature when I got married? If I could do it all again would I make the same choice? Is he the right person? Couldn’t I perhaps be happier with someone else? Did we both become different people?” Focusing on such uncertainty can destroy a relationship. Make no mistake about it. The hard fact is that yes, maybe you were immature when you got married. But that is what enabled you to both grow up together. He is the right person and yes you do change as you mature. But so long as you keep each other involved in the changes and the growth, they only serve

to make you more interesting to one another. “I am the Lord,” means G-d invested His essence into the Torah enabling us to connect to Him in a deep and powerful way through the study of Torah. The deepest way we can connect is by investing our essence into our relationships. Much like the Rabbi who took his wife with her bad leg to the doctor and said: “My wife’s leg is hurting ‘us!’” 2) Do not have any other G-ds: It may be tempting to look elsewhere and make comparisons, to see if your partner measures up to someone else. Focus on the good and the uniqueness that is your partner. Concentrate on those things that matter. The grass is always greener on the other side. But when you concentrate positively on the good, that is what becomes strengthened. Comparing always leads to trouble. This is your spouse – there is no other. 3) Do not take My name in vain: It’s easy to talk frivolously about your partner; to put them down or make jokes at their expense. Don’t take their name in vain. Sometimes we look to share intimate details with others with no regard for the confidentiality of our partner involved. Sure sometimes it is ‘necessary’ to talk. But there are lines that are crossed. We don’t speak to others about private topics without a clear purpose and we must choose carefully with whom we speak, when and where, if we are looking for the desired outcome.

Pirkei Avot Rabbi Hananiah ben Hakinai said: one who wakes up at night or walks on the way alone and turns his heart to idle matters, behold, this man is mortally guilty. The Bartenura explains the words “this one is liable for [forfeiture of] his life” by saying that night is the time of demons, and one who wanders on a road alone is in danger because of potential robbers and several other bad occurrences that could G-d forbid happen to him. If he had been thinking about words of Torah, it would have guarded him. Nowadays, perhaps

4) Remember the Shabbat: Shabbat is the day when we take time out to reinforce our relationship with G-d and spend time with the One who is most important, rather than ‘another day, another pound.’ It reminds us also to make time for our relationships. Never, ever let life get too busy. No time with a client, friend or anyone else, is more important than time with your spouse. 5) Honour your mother and father: Have respect for the other. Don’t trivialise what is important to them, even as it may not be important to you. We listen to our parents even if sometimes what they ask of us makes no sense to us. Similarly, we should be attuned to the needs of our spouses even as they may not always readily appeal. 6) Don’t kill: It’s easy to kill a person’s self-esteem. When we constantly criticize, we slowly kill off the other’s personality. One of the greatest gifts we get from our relationships is the self-confidence instilled by those who have the greatest confidence in us. Living in a critical, hostile environment is a killer. Living in an environment of love, acceptance and support builds up a person and sets the stage for a harmonious home. 7) Don’t commit adultery: Beyond the obvious, loyalty is the single most vital component in a relationship. When spouses sense that loyalty towards one another it creates a relaxed environment in which each feels safe to be open and to express their true selves.

8) Don’t steal: It is said, when we eat without reciting a blessing it is tantamount to stealing from G-d. In other words, we have no right to benefit from His world without expressing appreciation. There are so many things that we might take for granted from one another. Always remember to pause, appreciate and say thank you for the blessing of the other in your life, and everything that they do for you. 9) Do not bear false witness: Here’s a little secret. People are not typically born with prophecy. If something is bothering you, say so. Don’t let it simmer and leave him/her to figure it out. He comes home in a really bad mood. She says, ‘what’s wrong?’ He says, ‘nothing.’ They’re driving home from a dinner party, she is awfully quiet, he asks, ‘what’s wrong?’ she says, ‘nothing.’ Every time you keep something inside you and don’t say what is bothering you, you add a layer of bricks to the wall of your own making. At first you think you can step over the wall. After a while you require a little jump. After a number of

So there you have it. Beyond the literal, which, as stated is every bit applicable today as it was back then, they can be applied in every dimension of our existence.

Perek 3: Mishna 4

If we say we were too poor, He will show us the great Hillel, who could not afford the entrance fee to the shul and famously passed out up on the roof buried in snow. Too handsome? Not more than Yosef! In too much Danger? What about Avram in the fire! The upshot is there is never an excuse not to learn Torah and protect yourself and in the event of a self-caused disaster, G-d will blame you. As the Talmud says in Avodah Zara, “if someone goes out without a coat in the cold and gets ill, don’t blame Hashem. Blame yourself!”

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

10) Do not be jealous: It’s easy to fall into a trap where we become resentful of the other. Maybe we are jealous that they are out having a drink with friends while we are home babysitting. Maybe we resent having to work the extra hours while they are able to go shopping. You’ve got to work through the resentment. Respect each others space. Allow for personal time and enable flexibility for the other person. It’s about balance and figuring out what each other needs within the framework of their own space.

For Refuah Shalema for Mordechai Ben Chaya Sara we can say that one is in danger of falling asleep at the wheel, or not seeing a danger on the road due to darkness. There is a deeper lesson being taught here. We are all responsible for our actions. When we die, we will have to appear before Hashem Himself and give an accounting and reckoning of our deeds. If we say we were too rich to learn any Torah, he will show us very wealthy Tannaim and Amoraim from Talmudic times who were so rich that their own servants did not recognise them!

Torah from Israel

13 MAY 2021

From Meron To Yerushalayim: Reconciling Tragedy with Celebration BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN It all began on this day, atop a mountain of fire and smoke. For 2500 years, humanity failed to grasp a “One G-d” responsible for all reality. For too long, humanity was adrift in moral anarchy and societal dysfunction. On this epic day, G-d descended from Heaven and delivered His will and His Torah to a human audience which had been chosen to showcase religious life for the rest of humanity. This seminal day is the source of everything to a Jew. Yet, for some strange reason, the actual date of this event is omitted. Based upon various other coordinates, we are able to puzzle together the timeline and “decipher” the day upon which Torah was delivered. However, the absence of an explicit date for the most important event in Jewish history is astonishing. Why doesn’t the Torah announce this al-important date- in the same manner that it supplies dates for other important historical events? In truth, Matan Torah doesn’t actually possess a date because it isn’t part of the human realm or the human calendar. Torah is cosmic and, as the Talmud describes, predates Time and the creation of our universe. On the 6th of Sivan the eternal wisdom of Torah was condensed and delivered to a human community, but Torah itself is more sweeping than this specific moment. Torah is otherworldly and transcends both human experience and the reality we inhabit. It exists outside of time and therefore isn’t “chained” to a particular date. There is a second and seemingly incongruous quality to Torah. Even though this Heavenly work is unrelated to human experience, it also deeply shapes and influences human experience. Torah provides a blueprint for moral behavior and for the construction of a utopian society. A religious life inspired by Torah constitutes an ideal lifestyle of meaning, mission and immortality. Additionally, Torah’s wisdom and its values help us better understand our world and better respond to events which shape human history and affect our personal lives. Even though Torah stems from a place beyond time and beyond human experience, it “lands” in the world of human beings and shapes our behavior and experience. These two “modes” of Torah aren’t contradictory. Ideally, by adhering to Torah, we partake of something “higher” and more Heavenly which advances our lives and refines our experiences. By thrusting ourselves into a different realm we also perfect and enrich our human lives. Torah lies “beyond” and enriches us, precisely because it allows us to stretch beyond

ourselves and beyond the horizons of mortal experience. It is an ideal lifestyle precisely because it is otherworldly. It is our bridge to G-d. However, not all “moments” in history allow us to reconcile these two modes of Torah. The past year, the Corona epidemic heightened the differences between “cosmic Torah” and practical “human Torah”. The trying conditions of the pandemic and the strict health-guidelines forced us to flex our halachik observance. The preservation of life is a built-in halachik value, and almost every mitzvah is suspended for piku’ach nefesh. The doctrine of piku’ach nefesh is based upon viewing Torah as an agent for human prosperity. If Torah is meant to enable a better life and inspirit that life with purpose, it certainly must preserve life when life is threatened. Torah braces and perfects life; when life is threatened, halachik regulations are temporarily set aside to preserve the life which Torah is meant to perfect. Our religious adjustments in the face of Covid-19 restrictions affirmed Torah as a “refiner” of human experience. Torah is relevant to the human condition, enhances human experience and is adjusted when human life is endangered. There were some Jewish communities who adopted a more “cosmic view” of Torah as they navigated the epidemic very differently. They believed that if Torah study lies “beyond this world”, it isn’t subject to the natural order of this world. During various stages of the epidemic, they refused to suspend or alter Torah study for medical concerns. The gemara in Nedarim implies that if Torah study were to cease, the natural order would collapse. Without Torah the spiritual bedrock of our universe would become unsteady, and the world would “fold in” on itself. If there were ever a period which desperately demanded sustained Torah study, it is a global pandemic. For some communities the primacy and “otherworldliness” of Torah dictated that it not be suspended for health considerations. It is not my intention in this article to judge this response to the epidemic. There are many additional layers responsible for this controversial communal response. It was not exclusively based upon the supernatural primacy of Torah study. I assume that most readers of this article, as myself, did not agree with these policies and did adapt their religious life to health concerns. However, policies aside, this overriding view of “cosmic Torah” is incumbent upon everyone – even those who did pivot for public health concerns: Torah lies beyond this world and, inherently, isn’t subject to the rules and conditions of this world. By studying Torah,

The gemara in Nedarim implies that if Torah study were to cease, the natural order would collapse. Without Torah the spiritual bedrock of our universe would become unsteady, and the world would “fold in” on itself. we draw G-d into this world. Human prosperity is advanced in a world in which G-d’s presence is augmented. Preserving the otherworldliness of Torah retains its majesty; anchoring it too tightly to human concerns shrinks its enormity and sullies its grandeur. Shavuot isn’t just a time to celebrate a ‘static’ historical event, but also a moment to re-assess our attitudes toward Torah. Do we appreciate both the relevancy of Torah to life, as well as its transcendence? On the one hand each generation faces a renewed challenge of uncovering the relevancy of Torah. Each generation provides new technologies, new cultural voices and new human ventures. Torah addresses every evolution and every revolution- every shift in culture can be understood through the prism of Torah. The Torah encodes answers for whatever questions Man may pose and provides guidelines for whatever turns culture may take. Each generation searches for the wisdom to locate “cultural guidance” through Torah. We have all tried to navigate the crisis of 2020-21 through the hidden wisdoms of Torah. But on Shavuot we also underscore the transcendence of Torah. Ironically, over the past 50 years, our widespread attempts to better anchor Torah to the human realm may have eroded the sense of otherworldliness of Torah. Has Torah become

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

so human that its heavenly tone has been muted? The Rambam assiduously traced reasons for every mitzvah; he mapped every mitzvah to some human benefit. Part of the opposition to his program was the fear that he was humanizing a Torah which was meant to remain Heavenly. Have we all been guilty of this same humanization? By fastening Torah to human experience have we grounded it on Earth? By casting it as a preserver and enhancer of life have we emptied it of its cosmic meaning? By demanding that Torah be relevant to every age and every stage have we ignored its timelessness? The past year showcased two very polarized views of Torah. Most “subjected” Torah to the life-threatening conditions, while some endeavored to sustain the timelessness of Torah. Whatever your belief about the proper policy, Shavuot is an important time to reinforce these two enduring features of Torah. Long after the current crises fades, Torah will retain these dual features. Rabbi Moshe Taragin is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. Bemidbar

“G-d spoke to Moshe in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after their exodus from the land of Egypt, saying…” (Bemidbar 1:1)

Sidra Summary Ephraim 40,500; Menashe 32,200; Binyamin 35,400; Dan 62,700; Asher 41,500; Naftali 53,400. This comes to a total of 603,550 men. The tribe of Levi is not counted with the rest of the tribes. They are assigned to dismantle and transport the Mishkan (Tabernacle) when the nation travels in the desert, as well as to guard the Mishkan when it is stationary.

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 2:1-34

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEMIDBAR 1:1-19

On Rosh Chodesh of the second month after the Exodus from Egypt, G-d instructs Moshe and Aharon to take a census of men above the age of 20. (The Talmud adds that men above 60 were not counted). The leader of each tribe is to be present when his tribe is counted. The name of each leader is stated. The census is carried out as commanded.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 1:20-54

The Torah lists the results of the census. The tribe of Reuven numbers 46,500; Shimon 59,300; Gad 45,650; Yehuda 74,600; Yissachar 54,400; Zevulun 57,400;

G-d tells Moshe and Aharon how to position the 12 tribes (other than Levi) around the Mishkan. They are to be organised into four groups of three tribes, each group led by one particular tribe. To the east of the Mishkan are the tribes of Yehuda, Yissachar and Zevulun, led by Yehuda. To the south are the tribes of Reuven, Shimon and Gad, led by Reuven. To the west are the tribes of Ephraim, Menashe and Binyamin, led by Ephraim. To the north are the tribes of Dan, Asher and Naftali, led by Dan.

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 3:1-13

Aharon’s sons are listed. G-d tells Moshe to bring the tribe of Levi to Aharon in order to assist him in his work as the Kohen Gadol. The tribe of Levi is to take over the role that had been designated for

the firstborn, who were sanctified on the night of the Exodus from Egypt, when the Egyptian firstborn were killed and they survived.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 3:14-39

G-d tells Moshe to count the men of the tribe of Levi, aged from one month upwards. The count is divided up into three main groups, according to the descendants of Levi’s three sons, Gershon, Kehat and Merari. Each main group, whose constituent families are also listed, is given a different location in relation to the Mishkan. The overall number of Levi’im counted in the census is 22,000.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 3:40-51

Moshe is told to count the male firstborn and to ‘replace’ them with the Levi’im. The firstborn number 22,273. The extra 273 firstborn (over and above the 22,000 Levi’im) are to give five shekels each in

order to redeem their status.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 4:1-19

The specific role of each of the three main families is now detailed, one in this week’s sidrah, two in next week’s sidrah. The family of Kehat are to take down, transport and reassemble the holy Ark (Aron), the Table (Shulchan), the Menorah, the Golden Altar (Mizbeach Ha’zahav) and the vessels used together with these features of the Mishkan.

HAFTARA

The start of the haftarah is linked to the sidrah, with the Children of Israel compared to “the sand of the sea, which can neither be measured nor counted”. The prophet Hoshea then goes on to liken the sinful Children of Israel to an unfaithful wife. However, they will eventually return to ‘their husband’ (G-d), who will take them back with kindness and mercy.

Chovat Halevavot Hilchot Shabbat The author continues with the second area which requires trust, which is that of a livelihood. Whatever someone’s occupation is they should try to only work to the extent that is necessary for their own and their family’s health and wellbeing. A person who trusts in Hashem would not overwork or travel great distances, in order to attain wealth and live a life of luxury. That is not the way of one who has “trust” that Hashem is the true Provider. If Hashem wants a person to attain wealth He can arrange for it to happen without the person spending an extra minute at work, so long as one truly depends on Hashem and not on the means that they engage in. If, on the other hand, Hashem does not want a person to attain more that the basic, then all their efforts and the efforts of the entire Heaven and Earth will not succeed in a net gain. Trusting in Hashem leads one to peace

of mind and tranquillity and helps a person to not fear competition or worry about how soon their sustenance will be provided to them. Sometimes Hashem arranges the livelihood of many people through one person. A king or important minister may be examples of this. The reason Hashem does this is to test the powerful individual to see if they still truly serve Hashem or not. There are three aspects to this test. Does he earn his money through legitimate means? Does he enjoy all the wealth and power given to him or does he realise that the reason Hashem has given them this money is to support the people who depend on them? Finally, does he demand recognition for supporting the people dependent on him or does he recognise that he is merely an agent of sustaining people whose sustenance has been entrusted with him?

In the previous segment we introduced the topic of “Muktzah Machmat Chisaron Kis” – items which, due to their high value, are generally not moved besides for their primary (generally prohibited on Shabbat) function. If one designates a certain expensive item for a permissible purpose on Shabbat, for example, if one decides that the postage stamps in their possession will not be used for mailing their friend a birthday card, but will instead be added to a collection (not a “for sale” collection), then that decision makes the postage stamps permissible to move on Shabbat. However, if one buys an item – even a non-expensive one – prior to Shabbat and then decides on Shabbat that they no longer want the item and they intend to return it to the shop, then the item becomes Muktzah at that point due to its value and may no longer be moved on Shabbat. Generally, merchandise is in this severe category of Muktzah Machmas Chisaron Kis, so if you sell products from your house, such as clothing, tablecloths or curtains etc. if one generally touches

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

them as little as possible in order to keep them in their pristine condition and sellable, they are Muktzah Machmas Chisaron Kis and may not be moved. Food, even if it is merchandise, does not become Muktzah under this category. If one has an expensive item that broke on Shabbat then even if the owner does not really care about it any longer, it remains Muktzah throughout the duration of Shabbat. Valuable Seforim and tableware or silverware are not Muktzah Machmat Chisaron Kis – even though one rarely uses them, since their primary use is a permissible one on Shabbat, one does not firmly “set it aside” before Shabbat and, being that there is always a small possibility that it will be used on Shabbat, it does not become Muktzah.

Weekly Dvar Torah F RO M ERETZ Y I S RAEL

Counting Bnei Yisrael BY RAV YOSEF ZVI RIMON In the beginning of Parshat Bamidbar (1:2), Hashem commands Moshe to take a census of Bnei Yisrael. The Torah records the exact number counted, in verses 45-46: “…The sum of all those who were counted was: 603,550.” This census takes place in the second year, in the second month (Iyar), after the construction of the Mishkan. The first census of Am Yisrael was taken about seven months before this, in the first year following the Mishkan’s construction – when they collected the donations for the Mishkan (after Yom Kippur). There, the Torah records the exact number of the count (Shemot 38:26): “…for the 603,550.” It is exactly the same number: 603,550! How can this be? How can it be that seven months have passed, and yet the number of people in the nation remained identical? How can it be that not a single person died during this time period?

The Ramban (Shemot 30:12) gives two possible answers: 1. Is it possible that during those seven months, the exact same number of people died as those who turned 20 and thus could now be counted? “This is what actually happened”, says the Ramban. That is to say, that the number of boys who turned twenty – between Tishrei and Iyar – matched the number of people who died in that time period. 2. In the first count, they also included the tribe of Levi, whereas in the second count they did not (verse 47). Thus, the number of people who had turned 20 during those seven months matched the number of Levi’im from the first count. Even according to this answer, it is obvious that the fact that the numbers were identical is nothing short of miraculous. There is an additional question. If one looks at the amount of children that the tribes had in Bereishit, and compares that to how many they have at present, 200 years

‫תֹורה‬ ָ ‫ִּכי ִמ ִּצּיֹון ֵּת ֵצא‬

Campaign for Yeshivot & Seminaries in Israel

later, we also see something amazing. The average size of each tribe was approximately 50,000 people per tribe. In Bereishit (46:21), Binyamin had 10 children. Nonetheless, at present, the size of the tribe of Binyamin stands at 35,400! In contrast, Yehuda started off with 3 children (46:12) and now stands at 74,600! The most astonishing of all, is the tribe of Dan. Dan had one child (46:23): “And the sons of Dan: Hushim” – and he now has 62,700! It seems that the answer to all of these questions is as follows: The creation of Am Yisrael does not go according to the laws of nature. Am Yisrael is a natural creation that is always being directed, protected, and overseen by HaKadosh Baruch Hu. Even if it seems that according to the laws of nature, the tribe of Dan should have been the smallest, and Binyamin should have been the largest, Hashgacha Pratit (Divine Providence) decreed otherwise. Divine Providence determined that the total number of Hashem’s nation, at the

beginning of its journey, would be 603,550. And since Am Yisrael is run by a fusion of the natural world together with Hashgacha Pratit, they maintained this number at the beginning of their existence as a nation. Am Yisrael, together with the entire world, finds itself in a reality that is both difficult and complicated. We cannot understand Hashem’s plans. However, we can hope and pray that He is taking Am Yisrael, and the whole world, to a better, more pure place. From our Parsha, we can learn that Hashem is always protecting and watching over us. Hashem’s supervision and guidance is very reassuring and heartwarming. With Hashem’s help, we will continue to do His will in this world, in the best way possible – to fix and perfect the world through God’s Kingship. “Learning that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances” is not the type of blurb you would expect to read in a Yeshiva prospectus, nor the type of education you would suppose receiving from a page of Talmud. Realistically, though, there are two types of “matter”- physical matter and spiritual matter- and while the above definition applies to the study of physical matter, it is no less relevant to the study of spiritual matter, namely, the study of Torah. From this week’s Parsha, Reb Chaim Leib Shmuelevitz (1902-1979) derives a classical example of a “spiritual compound.” Reb Chaim questions why the Torah, in addition to instructing Moshe Rabbeinu to count the Levi’im separately from the rest of Bnei Yisroel, finds it necessary to specify three times during Bnei Yisroel’s counting that the Levi’im were not included. Consequently, Reb Chaim concludes that the exclusion of the Levi’im from Bnei Yisroel’s census must reflect a principle of paramount importance. The Midrash explains that since, as a result of the “10 spies” fiasco, the 603,550 men included in this count were destined to die in the wilderness over the next four decades, Hashem deliberately excluded the Levi’im from the count. Although the Levi’im were innocent of any wrongdoing, had they been counted together with Bnei Yisroel, they too would have died in that harrowing decree. Reb Chaim says that we see from this Midrash that when Hashem issues a decree on a “tzibur”- a community- that decree affects every member of the tzibur, regardless of whether each one deserves it. From the Torah’s point of view, a tzibur is not merely an assembly of individuals; rather it as a new entity - greater than the sum of all its parts - formed by its constituent elements: its congregants. Although the Levi’im did not deserve to die in the wilderness, if they had been counted with Bnei Yisroel, they would have become part of the entity of “Klal Yisroel” and suffered the overall fate of the tzibur. On the other hand, the power of the tzibur also works to its advantage. Since the collective value of a tzibur far outweighs the value of any one of its participants, an individual, through his connection to the tzibur, opens himself up to a degree of protection and success that he never would have merited on his own. Indeed,

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Shabbos has nothing to do with Hashem retiring; rather, it is the day that Hashem launched the world as we know it. it is for this reason that a person should always pray with a tzibur and make his requests on behalf of the tzibur. Unfortunately, over the last year, we have witnessed first-hand the terrible effects of being caught in the net of a worldwide decree. We have lost distinguished leaders and sterling members of our communities, seemingly without rhyme or reason. 13 MAY 2021 ADVERTORIAL

How do you practice Kintsugi in business and life Strength from failing: rebuilding businesses crushed by the pandemic Q: I know things seem a little bit more optimistic about the pandemic and we are supposed to be getting back to ‘normal’, but I really am at a loss to know which way to go with my business. We are being urged to ‘bounce back better’ by Boris Johnson but honestly, the sands have shifted so much over the last 14 months, that I’m not sure where to go from here. Please help! A: There is an ancient Japanese art called Kintsugi (stick with me on this one, it will be worth it in the end!) which, if its philosophy were adopted by businesses, could inspire them to reimagine their futures, even though the economic fallout of the pandemic means things look quite bleak. Apparently, it was discovered in the 15th century when the Japanese shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa sent a smashed prized bowl for repair and it was returned with ugly metal staples along the cracks holding it together. So, the finest craftsmen were

commissioned to develop a more careful process of restoration which led to the art of kintsugi, literally interpreted as “gold-joining”. This method of mending with lacquer resin and powdered gold, doesn’t just bring it back to its former strength; it makes it even stronger. It allows the imperfections to be emphasised with the gold embracing the cracks and ruptures, rather than hiding them, making it unique and celebrating the item as worth investing in. In the current challenging business climate, when many companies are left shattered, broken and unsure where to go from here - or if there is a future at all perhaps the way forward is to build on the ruptures to make a stronger and more sustainable base. It is true that the majority of

enterprises were blindsided by the current economic tsunami, but for some industries the cracks were already there. For example, the retail sector was already crumbling long before, crushed by the agility of online shopping and Amazon, whose swiftness and squeeze on profit margins could not be matched. For this sector, the pandemic has merely served to accelerate the demise of some of the biggest and oldest names on the High Street and forced others to re-invent and adapt. So too in other areas of business all is not lost, the way forward is to enhance the imperfections or scars, rather than hide them or give up in defeat. It is true that businesses are unlikely to go back to exactly where they were for a long time, but

this impossibility of return could be a good thing…. the first hints of the gold coming into view. Let’s face it, re-invention and not giving up in the face of failure and mistakes, is part and parcel of enterprise know how. After all, when you lose one client or more, do you give up on the others? When orders seem to be on a downward spiral do you panic, or reinvent marketing strategies and double your efforts to find customers. Similarly embracing the fractures could see you find new ways of operating, engaging with clients, sourcing products, developing new goods – the list is endless. Already business commentators and pundits are applauding the discovery of flexibility in remote and home working. Supply chains are being strengthened and made more resilient, Business plans and projections have been tested and refined, or even put in place for the first time. Sometimes in the process of repairing things that have broken, we actually create something more unique and resilient.

So now that you could perhaps see re-starting as an opportunity, here are some tips to practice Kintsugi in your business: Examine the existing – before you get into dealing with the breaks, in the spirit of Kintsugi’s emphasis on waste elimination, first take a good look at what you have. Now is the time to look at your products, services, experiences and customers. How do people interact with your business? Where do you deliver value? What is the quality of your service or product? Think about his both pre-pandemic and current. Embrace imperfections – now is the time for honesty and openness, just like the visibility of the cracks. What wasn’t working before? Which habits of business were you keeping up well, just because, even though they weren’t working well or translating to the profit line? Is there room for adapting and improving your offer? Or perhaps delivering in a different way?

operations requires an astute sense of timing of when to return to the market place and with an eye to match the demand accumulated during lockdown, without going faster than the pace of recovery. This will take close monitoring of the market. Too much stock may leave you over exposed too little, missing out on the recovery and profits. Here’s hoping that your Kintsugi repairs go well, and above all take note of the wisdom of Winston Churchill “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Welcome to Sefer Bemidbar! Moshe is told to count the Jewish People. Hashem holds us very precious and therefore has a love for counting the nation. Each of the tribes had a Nasi, a prince who helped Moshe and Aaron with the mammoth task of counting almost the entire nation, with Shevet Levi the exception (for now). Later, they too would be counted. Shevet Levi were given special privileges, such as the Kohanim coming from Aharon’s family. They also had special roles in the dismantling, carrying and setting up of the Mishkan when the Jewish People travelled throughout their time in the wilderness. The Jewish people encamped and travelled in a special order, with three tribes in each direction and the tribe of Levi camping and travelling close to the Mishkan.

As we are all very aware, Sunday night through to Tuesday evening is the special Yom Tov of Shavuot! It is compared to a “wedding” between Hashem and His nation and we celebrate been given the greatest gift of all – the Torah itself! Throughout our thousands of years as a nation, we have always held tight to the Torah, learning it, teaching it, living it and honouring it. We also read the story of Ruth, who had married into the family of Yehuda and then truly joined the Jewish people, marrying Boaz and eventually becoming the matriarch of the entire Kingdom of David Hamelech! We enjoy our food, whether meaty or, separately, milky, and we also spend time learning Torah and tasting its sweetness too! Chag Sameach!

In a nutshell This week we open the fourth book of the Torah Bemidbar! This book is full of amazing lessons and stories and laws as is typical of all the Torah… The first Mitzvah is to count the Jewish people, each male aged 20 and upwards. The tribe of Levi was not counted for now, however. Aaron’s descendants were set aside as Kohanim. Now, originally the Firstborns were the most prestigious of the nation; however, after the sin of the Golden Calf, Hashem took that privilege away from them and the tribe of Levi who resisted the Golden Calf was chosen instead. With that in mind, the tribe of Levi were counted from one month old and upwards. There were various duties assigned to the tribe of Levi. We learn of the dismantling and rebuilding of the Mishkan as well as its transportation which was shared between the Levite families of Gershon, Kehat and Merari. We also learn of the direction that the tribes

encamped and the flags that represented each tribe. There was great significance to these flags. Surrounding the Mishkan was the tribe of Levi. To the east of the Mishkan were the tribes of Yehudah, Yissachar and Zevulun. To the South of the Mishkan were the tribes of Reuven, Shimon and Gad. To the west were the tribes of Efraim, Menashe and Binyamin and to the North were Dan, Asher and Naftali. Not only were the Jewish people stationed this way; this is how they travelled too. This coming Monday and Tuesday is the very exciting Yom Tov of Shavuot. On this day Hashem granted the Jewish People the greatest gift possible, the Torah. The Torah is not only a source of life and a tree of life, but also the very essence of the Jewish People. To the extent that we are connected to the Torah, that is the extent of how “Jewishly” alive we are. In celebration of getting the Torah and the festival of harvesting the crop, we mark the day with doing no forbidden work and instead spend time with our family/

friends and with Hashem! Many say Tehillim as it is also the anniversary of the passing of King David, the author of Tehillim. It is customary to eat milky and sweet products on Shavuot in recognition of the “honey and milk” that the Torah is compared to. Shavuot was also a prime time for starting to bring Bikkurim, the first fruits of the seven species that the Land of Israel is blessed with. These were brought amidst great pomp and ceremony in the times of the Beit Hamikdash. On Shavuot we also read the story of Ruth. This brave princess left her family’s home and connected with her mother-in-law Noami, staying with her through good times and hard times. She eventually married Boaz, a cousin of Noami’s husband, and she was handsomely rewarded with a very distinguished line up of descendants including King David and eventually the King Moshiach who we all await each day!
