IRAN VOWS HARSH RESPONSE

BY DAVID SAFFER

Iranian militias have chillingly promised a “harsh response” after several Syrian and Iranian-backed forces were killed and wounded overnight in an alleged Israeli airstrike in Syria. Syrian news agency SANA reported that an Israeli airstrike targeted a communications tower and several nearby sites, killing one soldier and wounding three more. The strike was carried out from the direction of the Jordanian and Iraqi borders, the second such airstrike in the past week. Earlier this morning, a joint operations room affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Hezbollah and the Bashar al-Assad regime warned that it will respond harshly to the airstrikes.

PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

They stressed that its mission in Syria is only to help the Syrian state to confront “terrorists” and ISIS. “For years, we have been subjected to attacks from the Israeli and American enemy in an attempt to drag us into side battles that were not a priority for our presence in Syria, and the

Zionists’ excuse was that they were targeting accurate weapons and sensitive equipment that posed a threat to their usurping entity,” added the joint statement. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem condemned the alleged Israeli airstrikes on Thursday morning as well, calling them a “blatant aggression and outrageous thuggery.” Qassem stressed that Israel

could only be deterred by confronting it, responding to its attacks, making it “pay the price” for its actions and not allowing it to impose the rules of engagement. Previously, the last attack blamed on Israel in Syria took place in August, where four Syrian civilians were reportedly killed when Syrian air defence missiles fell in a residential area.

Chelsea fan pleads guilty to anti-Semitic posts BY ADAM MOSES A Chelsea FC season ticket holder has pleaded guilty to seven counts of antisemitic and racist tweets identified by the Premier League club following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Nathan Blagg, 21, of Retford in Nottinghamshire, was charged last month with sending by public communication network offensive messages about football players and fans that violate the Malicious CommuNathan Blagg nications Act. Charges refer to tweets sent between 29th September, 2020 and 5th February, 2021. Blagg pleaded guilty to all charges at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutor David Roberts said there was a “racially aggravated” element because of the “antisemitic nature” to a number of tweets including a picture of the Auschwitz concentration camp train tracks with the message, “Spurs are on their way to Auschwitz.” Roberts said messages were alleged to be “racially aggravated” due to the context of Tottenham Hotspur fans “coming from a Jewish area”. Maeve Thornton, defending, reportedly said Blagg had been suffering at the time from “low moods” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “He has got drawn into this in terms of a lack of awareness and understanding of the impact this was going to have,” she said. “With hindsight, he now understands how wrong this is. He is indeed very remorseful and very apologetic and has taken steps to address his offending by removing himself from Twitter. There is not going to be a repeat of this behaviour moving forward.” The court heard that Blagg was initially reported by a West Bromwich Albion fan on September 26 2020 to Chelsea regarding a Tweet about former Baggies legend Cyrille Regis. Posts were investigated by Chelsea’s security team who then identified racist Tweets about black football players and also antisemitic tweets, including Nazi salutes being performed. The racist posts were forwarded to police, who identified Blaggs’ account.

Blagg also posted a series of antisemitic Tweets before the Chelsea vs Tottenham derby clash on November 29 2020 and February 4 earlier this year. One Tweets read, “Can’t beat days like this, can be as horrible as I like and not be judged it’s mint.” Another post read, “Yids tomorrow, which means for the next 48 hours I can tweet as much anti-Semitism as I want without being told off.” The next day, Blagg wrote: PHOTO: FACEBOOK “Gas a Jew, Jew, Jew.” Blagg was arrested at his home address last February and charged in September. Detective Constable Suzanne Smith reportedly told the Nottingham Post that Blagg thought he could post “grossly offensive and abusive messages about other football fans and players with impunity.” The Met Police investigating officer added, “This investigation demonstrates that nobody can post racist, anti-Semitic or hateful abuse on social media without consequences. “Football fans and players are fed up with this kind of toxic discourse surrounding the game on social media and we will use all the policing powers available to us to stop it from happening.” Blagg has been released on unconditional bail until a sentencing date expected to be November 5th. A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “Antisemitism is sadly alive and well in football and online. But this case exemplifies how clubs and fans are coming together to stamp it out, while social media networks continue to do nothing. We commend the fan who initially reported the racist posts and Chelsea Football Club for taking action. We trust that Chelsea and the courts will both issue appropriate sanctions to send the message that the ugly face of antisemitism has no place in the beautiful game.” Detective Constable Smith thanked Chelsea for bringing the results of the initial investigation to attention. She also encourages people to report social media abuse to police by calling 101 or tweeting @MetCC. WHAT’S INSIDE THIS WEEK 02 News 10 Opinion 12 Games 13 Community 22 Feature

Bennett praises Merkel on final Israel visit BY DAVID SAFFER Prime Minister Naftali Bennett praised outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her last official visit to Israel on Sunday. Merkel landed at Ben Gurion Airport on Saturday night and joined a cabinet meeting during the two-day trip. Israel’s leader recognised Germany’s staunch support during conflicts and diplomatic issues. Merkel met with President Issac Herzog and high-tech industry leaders. She also received an honorary doctorate from Haifa’s Technion Institute and participated in a discussion at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. Speaking at Yad Vashem, Merkel lit an eternal flame in its Hall of Remembrance before observing a moments silence after placing a wreath at a memorial of ashes from extermination camps and killing fields. Speaking outside the memorial centre, Merkel noted a resurgence of Jewish life in Germany. It is “an expression of trust” that compels Germany to stand up against anti-Semitism, hatred and violence every day,” she said. Attending a later session of Bennett’s cabinet, Merkel said “the history of the Shoah (Holocaust) is a singular event for which we continue to bear responsibility in every phase of history, including in the future”. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid noted that during Merkel’s16-year tenure she had never attempted to dismiss the memory of the Holocaust. “You made your people look at history with almost cruel sincerity,” she said. “There was no hesitation in your struggle against anti-Semitism and the protection of the Jewish community.”

Bennett said Merkel has served as a “moral compass” for Europeans at times divided over Middle East conflicts. “We sometimes disagree on questions such as whether there should be a two-state solution with the Palestinians,” Merkel told Bennett’s cabinet. “But we agree, I think, that there must always be a vision of a lasting democratic Jewish State of Israel.” Merkel, 67, is set to step down from office when a new government is formed. This visit was Merkel’s eighth to Israel during a 16-year tenure but first since Bennett took office. “The bilateral relations during your tenure as chancellor became stronger than ever and transformed into a true friendship, thanks to your leadership,” Bennett told Merkel. Germany is Israel’s largest trading partner in Europe, and Merkel’s visit to Jerusalem included talks on bilateral relations including the nuclear threat of Iran. Bennett commended the strong ties between the two countries and especially Germany’s role in setting EU’s pro-Israel policy alongside national security. Addressing the German Chancellor and delegation at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, Bennett welcomed Germany’s commitment to Israel. Noting a “true friendship” due to Merkel’s leadership, Bennett looked forward to strengthening relations in business, science, education, health and security. “Your leadership paved the foundation for an ongoing commitment of Germany to Israel’s security and we very much appreciate it. We certainly remember history and we look optimistically to a brighter future. My government will continue the ongoing relationship but our new government also

Bar to head Shin Bet BY ADAM MOSES Ronen Bar is the new head of the Shin Bet security agency in Israel. The government announced the appointment earlier this week and it takes effect today. Bar’s nomination was briefly in doubt following an anonymous letter detailing two misconduct incidents. But the Advisory Committee for the Appointment of Senior Officials in the Civil Service, known as the Goldberg Committee, ratified the post after a meeting with the 55-year-old. In a glittering career with the IDF, Bar was

a combat soldier in the elite Sayeret Matkal special forces unit before his recruitment as a Shin Bet field agent in the Operations Unit following army service. Bar commanded operations in the Gaza Strip, Yehudah and Shomron, and Lebanon. In 2011, he headed Shin Bet’s Operations Division. In 2016, he led Shin Bet’s resource development headquarters prior to taking up the post of deputy head of the service two years later. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described Bar as a “daring fighter and an excellent commander”. “I have no doubt that he will lead the

brings a new spirit, a new spirit of goodwill.” Commenting on Israel’s most diverse government in history,” he added, “We have left and right, Jews and Muslims, religious and secular, and it’s working, we’re getting together pretty well. It’s also the most female government in Israel’s history, with eight ministers.” Merkel said that in her term of office spoke about stronger inter-governmental consultations, the Holocaust and looked to a common future. Regarding Israel’s security, she noted it was always a central topic of every German government. As for Israel’s diverse cabinet, she quipped, “Compared with your government, a German coalition government seems a very simple matter.” The chancellor added that Israel-German relations should not be based solely on the memory of the Holocaust. In a press conference held after the cabinet meeting, Bennett responded to Merkel’s about disagreements regarding Israel and the Palestinians. “I am pragmatic,” Bennett said. “We are taking the necessary steps to improve life for everyone.” Germany became Israel’s largest trade partner in Europe during Merkel’s 16 year-tenure. Regarding the German chancellor stepping down and a new government being set up, Shimon Stein of the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University and a agency to new highs of excellence in the name of Israel’s security,” he added. “Bar grew from among the agency’s ranks, where he made enormous contributions to the security of the country and its citizens. I’m sure his appointment will raise the Shin Bet to new heights.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz welcomed Bar’s appointment, noting on Twitter, “We have known each other for many years, I’m certain you will carry out your role with dedication, professionalism and bring the agency to new heights.” “I can only say thank you to the Prime Minister for both trust and support, I look forward to working with our excellent employees,” commented Bar. Numerous security awards have been made to operations and units commanded by Bar. Bar is married and a father of three children.

former Israeli ambassador to Berlin, reportedly expects no major changes in relations between Israel and Germany. “Generally if (SPD leader Olaf ) Scholz forms arms exports to Israel] may be “more problematic” but generally “no significant changes are expected”. SPD and the Greens have previously held reservations over German weapon sales to Israel. German shipyards equipped Israel with advanced submarines and navy ships to protect the gas reservoirs in the Mediterranean. Dr. Maya, of The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies and a professor at the Hebrew University’s European Forum ratified the ‘no major change’ expectation. Sion-Tzidkiyahu added that the party has had warmer relations with Israel. “The CDU, the Christian Democrats under Merkel, expressly committed in their coalition agreement, their governmental agreement (in 2008]) to Israel, to its security,” she said. Sion-Tzidkiyahu noted that Israel’s government was attempting to build closer ties with the EU and member states. And the post of Foreign Minister in a coalition is a major appointment for Israel. Germany’s current foreign minister, Heiko Maas of the SPD, has “special relations” with Israel, Sion-Tzidkiyahu said. During the recent hostilities from Gaza, Maas demonstrated a notable show of solidarity with Israel.

The Metropolitan Police are investigating an antisemitic sign in the window of a Tower Hamlets private residence on council property after being alerted by Campaign Against Antisemitism. The sign on the corner of Virginia Road and Columbia Road read “Wake Up! We are living in a psychopathic Zionist military police state. Smash the Jewish white supremacist Nazis”. It was reported to CAA by a member of the public who alerted relevant authorities. “Antisemitic incitement cannot be tolerated and we will always take action when victims and witnesses bring incidents to our attention,” said a CAA spokesman. “We welcome the investigations by Tower Hamlets and the Met Police into this distressing sign and expect its prompt removal.” Anyone with information should email investigations@antisemitism.org or call the police on 101 (reference number BCA-110897-21-0101-IR).

Razvozov opens Israel pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020 BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel Minister of Tourism Yoel Razvozov officially opened the Israeli pavilion at the Expo 2020 in Dubai. One of 192 country pavilions, the event has 60 daily shows amongst a plethora of activites. The theme of this year’s event is Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. Sub-themes are Sustainability, Opportunity and Mobility. Areas under focus for the sustainability segment are industries, financial capital, governance, employment and education. A live actor tells Israel’s story in a unique, immersive and entertaining show. The pavilion includes Israeli innovations and initiatives developed in conjunction with other countries. The Yesh Atid MK told delegates, “It is the first time that there is an Israeli pavilion in a major fair on Arab soil.” He added: “The signing of the Abraham Accords about a year ago was a historic, watershed moment for the Middle East that marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter for the region. It represents a decision to build a better future together that will benefit all of our people. Israel firmly believes that peace brings peace. The Accords opened the door to additional peace agreements, and indeed, more peaceful ties have been established since the signing. Israel yearns for peaceful ties with its neighbours.” The event was attended by over 250 people including local Emirati dignitaries, Israeli officials and businesspeople and foreign diplomats. Themes decorating the Israeli pavilion represented Israel’s contribution to humanity including advancements in health, tech, water conservation, clean energy and

protecting nature. Screens projected scenes from the Old City of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Eilat. Unlike most pavilions that were enclosed, Israel’s entrance was left open to allow those not visiting to see Israel’s content. The openness was a symbol of welcoming new partners for peace. The UAE invited Israel to participate in the Expo three years ago before the countries established diplomatic ties in the Abraham Accords. Aside from Razvozov, Minister of Interior Ayelet Shaked and Minister for Environmental Protection Tamar Zandberg visited the UAE. Shaked reflected that during her visit she experienced “true peace”. Regarding the Expo, Shaked said it was an “excellent platform” to leverage connections and develop new economic

opportunities between Israel, the UAE and world. Zandberg stressed the importance of combatting climate change. Regarding the Expo, she called on countries in the region, including those with no official relations, to use Expo Dubai as a “diving board into cooperation” critical to a shared future. Since the onset of the Abraham Accords a number of tech partnerships have taken place. Israeli air-to-water company Watergen has 15 medium-sized machines in Abu Dhabi as part of a pilot programme, cleantech engine start-up Aquarius Engines has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with a British firm to produce automotive products in the UAE and Israeli biotech company MediWound is to distribute its burn treatment technology in the UAE after a deal with the Ghassan Aboud Group.

Meantime, Haifa-based medicine company Pluristem Therapeutics has signed an MoU with Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center to advance cell therapies for diseases. In related news, Shaked announced that this week Israelis are able to visit the UAE without an advance visa. The Israeli tourism ministry now expects a significant increase in Israelis travelling to the UAE. Israel is hoping both countries will see a decline in COVID-19 as Emiratis visit Israel. The Knesset’s Abraham Accords Caucus, meanwhile, is to host an inaugural event to mark the opening of a new institute led by former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman. It is hoped that the initiative will deepen the Abraham Accords. Israel’s Foreign Ministry estimates 15 million people will visit the Israeli Expo pavilion in the next six months.

CAA disturbed by “sobering” police poll BY ADAM MOSES Campaign Against Antisemitism has described a poll illustrating the public view of police prejudice over antisemitism as “sobering” and hope it will lead change. Left Foot Forward commissioned Savanta: ComRes to discover the extent of a potential problem. The results are worrying as 46 percent of respondents felt the police had a problem with antisemitism, 29 percent did not. A quarter of those that took part were non committal. Disturbingly, 17 percent of respondents said the police had a “significant” problem with antisemitism. Some 60 percent of 2019 Labour and Liberal Democrat voters backed the viewpoint

agreed in comparison to 42 percent of Conservative voters. Antisemitism concerns in the police was bad but problems with racism, sexism and class bias was higher. A CAA spokesperson said, “These are sobering figures that tally extraordinarily closely with how the Jewish community itself feels about the police. Our research has shown that four in ten British Jews do not believe that the police do enough to protect them. “Jewish confidence in the police is not helped by revelations of police officers affiliated to neo-Nazi groups or who participate in racist WhatsApp groups. Nor is it boosted by questionable policy decisions, such as

the Met’s refusal to prohibit a second ‘Free Palestine’ convoy to drive through London earlier this year, even after the first convoy was involved in wholesale harassment of Jewish neighbourhoods and numerous antisemitic hate crimes.” CAA added, “This poll shows that, while the Jewish community is indebted to our police forces for the immense good that they do, our concerns with shortcomings in British policing are registering with the wider public. We hope that this will lead to the changes we need.” A Home Office spokesperson reportedly commented, “Any form of prejudice in policing is unacceptable and the Government

remains committed with police leaders to address these issues and keep our communities safe. Allegations of racism including antisemitism should be treated extremely seriously by the police and any allegations of misconduct aggravated by discrimination must be referred immediately to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. “We are working closely with the police to deliver the diverse police workforce that our communities need.” Results came from across the country with 56 percent of Londoners leading the way in terms of region, over half respondents backed the viewpoint in Scotland, Wales and the North West. CAA’s latest Antisemitism Barometer showed that 40 percent of British Jews do not believe police do enough to protect them.

Campaign Against Antisemitism have welcomed the UK and Australia highlighting the United Nations Human Rights Council’s double standards over a resolution condemning racism but backing the recent Durban IV conference. The UK’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Simon Manley, issued a joint statement on behalf of both nations. Manley stressed the UK and Australia’s commitment to combating all forms of racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia and related intolerance whether that be at home or abroad. “The two allies are committed to engaging on UN resolutions which consider how to eliminate racial discrimination,” he noted. “The UK and Australia do not agree with the multiple references to the Durban Conference (in the resolution), given the historic concerns over antisemitism.” The UK and Australia were among 38 countries not to attend the 20th anniversary commemorative event for the Third World Conference Against Racism last month. Manley called on the Council to consider why so many states stayed away and how to move forward. He also noted that racism should be tackled in “all its forms” but for too long the UN had “downplayed the scourge of antisemitism”. “This must end,” he said. “The UK is clear that we will not attend future iterations of

Edelstein reportedly told Channel 12, “With Netanyahu, we will never win. We’ve tried four times with Netanyahu, why should we succeed with him a fifth time?” he said, referring to Israel’s four consecutive election campaigns between 2019 and 2021 which caused unprecedented political instability.” Edelstein added that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s government is made up parties across the political spectrum and would lost in new elections. Edelstein holds the view that 70 rightwing seats in the Knesset would back a government under his leadership with the support of Justice Minister Gideon Saar who had a failed bid against Netanyahu. After the last election, Saar ruled out being a part of a Netanyahu coalition government but would sit in a government under another Likud chairman. “It is time to change a record, Netanyahu

the Durban Conference while concerns over antisemitism remain.” Manley called for a vote on the resolution so the UK and Australia could vote against it. A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said, “We welcome this joint statement by the Governments of the UK and Australia that calls out the UN Human Rights Council’s hypocrisy, claiming to fight racism on the one hand while endorsing antisemitism on the other. “No fight against racism can succeed if it ignores, marginalises or enables racism against Jewish people. It is time that the UN and its institutions learned that.” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss noted, “The UK is committed to tackling antisemitism and racism around the world,” adding that the UK and Australia’s stance on this resolution is entirely consistent with that commitment. Israel’s Ambassador to the US and UN, Gilad Erdan, welcomed the non-participation of Durban IV. “I hope this will be the last UN event commemorating that shameful conference,”. World Jewish Congress backed the mass of nations action over antisemitism and anti-Israel bias. The US, UK and Israel led the response. Counties to boycott the event also included Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece,

Honduras, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Moldova, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and Uruguay. The Israeli Foreign Ministry thanked countries for support. Belgium, China, Egypt, Iran, Ireland, Holy See, Pakistan, the Palestinian Authority, Portugal, Russia, and Syria attended the conference. Iran, Syria and the Palestinian Authority criticised Israel during proceedings. At the inaugural 2001 Durban conference there were attempts to equate Zionism with racism. Subsequent conferences in the Durban series included the distribution of antisemitic propaganda including The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and cartoons of hooknosed Jews. Thousands protested against Israel, signs linked the Star of David to a swastika, praised Hitler and called Israel an apartheid state. Erdan said the 2001 conference encouraged hate and antisemitism, adding that the UN-hosted event became the “worst international manifestation of antisemitism since World War Two”. WJC noted the conference “degenerated into a hallmark of antisemitism and anti-Zionism”. Fourteen countries boycotted the 2011 conference.

Israel’s Health Ministry reported 1,023 new coronavirus cases after 52,000 tests last Sunday. A 1.99% positivity rate indicates a record low since the end of July. The death toll since the start of the pandemic has reached 7,904. Of 674 COVID-19 patients hospitalised 463 are in serious condition, 186 are on ventilators. The Health added that of ill patients, 345 have not been vaccinated, 70 had two doses of the vaccine, 31 had also had the booster jab. Among seriously ill patients under 60 years old, 176 were not vaccinated, 21 had both doses and 7 had taken the booster. Figures illustrate 86% of seriously ill patients under 60 had not had the vaccine.

This is compared to 3.5% who had had the booster. Of COVID-19 patients diagnosed, 44% were under 11 who are too young to receive the vaccine, 12% were 12 to 18, 6% were 60 and over. The drop in cases follows the government’s ‘Green Class’ initiative in areas with low morbidity. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said, “This program is possible now that we have managed to reduce morbidity caused by the Delta variant of COVID-19. We can now make thing a bit easier for both the kids and their parents.” To date over six million Israelis have received the first dose of the vaccine, over 5.6 million both doses and more than 3.7 million both doses and booster.

Conservative Party Conference OPINION PIECE BY LORD ERIC PICKLES After two years absence, the Conservative Party returned to Manchester. For many representatives (Tories never use the term delegates), the 2019 Conference will have the last big event, with many people, before the Covid-19 lockdown. It was almost as if the entire conference had left on an extended fire drill, returning to the same friends and the same conversation. The General Election victory over Corbyn almost forgotten, swamped by the enormity of the pandemic. The theme running through the week was “Levelling Up,” removing regional disparities and offering the ambitious a chance for a good life without having to pull up sticks and move to London or the South East. Oh, if it was so simple. The real test as to whether Boris succeeds or not will be tackling inequality within regions and not between regions. Manchester is a prosperous city with financial services,

thriving retail, booming leisure facilities, a tradition of culture and a reputation for innovation. Yet a brisk walk from the Conference, there are pockets of deprivation that never use any of these opportunities. For them, Manchester might as well be the other side of the Moon rather than a few miles down the road. There were signs that the government understands this. The announcement of additional tutors is a small but important step. On Tuesday, there were two clear conference stars: Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. I escorted the Israeli Ambassador around the conference exhibition. At times it felt like I was

accompanying Mick Jagger. Lots of people wanted to talk to her or share a selfie. She spent most of her time at medical and social stands. This is perhaps recognition of how important Israel’s partnership with the UK was in the research and rollout of vaccines during the pandemic. The last decade has seen closer cooperation between the two countries on medical innovation. The NHS could hardly function without Israeli patented medicine. Ambassador Hotovely was a big success at the Conservative Friends of Israel reception making a barnstorming speech. The CFI reception is the biggest one at the conference, always oversubscribed. is grounded on being an “open mike” for cabinet members and senior tories. Liz Truss was the principal guest. Her speech was covered in this paper last week so I won’t review it in detail. She looked to expand a in Trade Deal three areas: trade; technology; security. The Foreign Secretary said “there was no closer friend and ally to Britain than Israel. Within days of these positive words, they would be tested at the United Nations Human Rights Council and found not to be wanting. The Council sought to introduce a resolution commending the work of the Durban Conference, that notorious Jew hating festival. Some of the wording had been watered down in the hope of attracting unanimity. The UK had boycotted the recent commemoration of the original conference, and on the basis that there is no such thing as Antisemitism Lite, called for a vote and voted against the resolution. The UK was joined by Australia and many of our European Allies United Kingdom Special Envoy for postHolocaust issues, Chair, ACOBA, and CoChair, UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation.

How has it come to this? OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN In a particularly unpleasant turn of events an Irish author this week picked on the Jews by refusing to publish her latest book in Hebrew. Citing her concerns over Israel this author has stated openly that she has been taking her lead from the BDS movement. Simply put she is being guided by a philosophy which seeks the destruction of the State of Israel and denies self-determination to the Jews. How this turns out over the next few days and weeks remains to be seen. The concern though is how did we get to this position? How is it that a mainstream author can feel that they can calmly and deliberately discriminate against Jews without any fear of retribution? The answer is multi-faceted. Firstly and most significantly, Jews are not the subject of overt discrimination in the UK. As a consequence there is a feeling of security which is not present with certain other minority groups. Or rather, that was the position until Jeremy Corbyn took charge of the Labour Party. In a few short years he changed the political landscape so that attacking Jews became standard practice for certain members of the party and

indeed other left wing or progressive parts of society. Now he has gone, too many of the Jewish Community believe that the problem has not gone away. The author in question is not British but Irish, though has a large following in the UK who it appears have to date been unconcerned about her publishing decision. It has been said often that many of the actions against Jews would not be tolerated by other minorities. That then leads to the second part of the answer which is we are not making enough of a

fuss. Once the Labour leadership changed many breathed a sigh of relief and thought it would be business as usual, i.e. a return to pre-Corbyn days. Sadly, as has been mentioned in this column previously that is not the case. This blatant act of discrimination needs to be called out for what it is – antisemitic. We should be considering the legality of this author’s decision, does it meet the standard of a hate crime, or there is a civil remedy? Thirdly (though I am sure there are

Some dialogue with these groups as to what they do or don’t find acceptable might be a worthwhile exercise in trying to bring some objectivity to the issue of antisemitism so that likes of this author might think even once before running down the discriminatory road that leads to Jew-hate. other reasons for this free and open discrimination) the evil that is BDS has not been exposed for what it is, fundamental anti-Semitism. It is not clear whether the author in question believes the lies peddled by the BDS propaganda or just doesn’t care. What is clear though is that level of anti-Semitism in Ireland is at an appalling level and it perhaps comes as no surprise that against that background this particular Irish author feels comfortable in taking the decision she has. It is time to adopt a new standard for attacks on Jews. Instead of trying to work out if these are antisemitic or not, why not imagine the attacks are against another minority group, such Hindus or Sikhs. Some dialogue with these groups as to what they do or don’t find acceptable might be a worthwhile exercise in trying to bring some objectivity to the issue of antisemitism so that the likes of this author might think even once before running down the discriminatory road that leads to Jew-hate. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

This deal occurred in a local nine-table duplicate. Usually, West led the seven of clubs, East winning with the king and continuing with the ace. The seven unsuccessful declarers all ruffed the second club and continued with the ace-king of diamonds followed by the eight of diamonds, planning to ruff it in dummy. However, the relevant Wests produced the Jack of trumps and played a third round of clubs. When West discarded on the first round of trumps, the unsuccessful declarers could not believe their misfortune when East turned up with a trump trick. The two successful declarers made the simple, cost nothing, play of cashing the ace of trumps before tackling diamonds. They were able to score their diamond ruff in addition to five trumps, the ace of hearts and the three top diamonds. THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Court room drama at LSJS

Satmar Boys School Reception Sunday evening at the home of Satmar Rav Rabbi Y.C Horowitz

L-R: Joanne Greenaway, Dr Harris Bor, Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski, Rachel Marcus and Anthony Metzer QC

The London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) turned into a court room with over 200 people in the jury (either in-person or online) as Noah went on trial. The presiding Judge, Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski of Golders Green Synagogue, an expert in Jewish law and rabbinic advisor to LSJS, ensured that the court maintained decorum and that both sides were able to present their case. The question for the court was whether Noah was partly to blame for the demise of life on Earth. Armed with a prophetic pre-warning of the coming deluge, could he not have done more? Was Noah a biblical hero or betrayer of humankind? Acting for Noah’s defence was Dr Harris Bor (Barrister at Twenty Essex Street) and Joanne Greenaway (Arbitration Lawyer now CEO of LSJS) and presenting the prosecution

case was Anthony Metzer QC (Barrister, Goldsmith Chambers) and Rachel Marcus (Barrister, 1 Crown Office Row). Both sides employed rabbinic sources and legal concepts to argue their case with wit and wisdom. Issues of mass ecocide, relative righteousness, PTSD and the misogyny of the plough were employed to great effect. The judge’s summary highlighted the complexity of the case and the weakness of binary attitudes before Noah was comfortably acquitted, although his post-deluvian actions were severely criticised. Joanne Greenaway, defence lawyer for Noah & CEO of LSJS, said “I’m not only delighted to have got Noah off on all charges but also that we had so much fun in the process. Thanks to my learned colleagues and all our students/jury members for a great

evening and a real example of the stimulating, innovative, nuanced and thought-provoking education that LSJS continues to provide. It was really energising to have so many back in the building with us and to use our new hybrid technology to such good effect.” Judy from Jerusalem joined the jury via Zoom and commented “It was a fascinating evening. There is no end to the inventive presentations from LSJS. Lucky to be able to learn with you”. Kate from London attended in-person and said “Fabulous event! Witty, learned, and original ideas. Thank you to the judge and counsel.” If you missed this exceptional event visit lsjs.ac.uk/shop to purchase the recording and to view other previous LSJS events.

How to survive primary school Hello, our names are Sammy, Ariella and Sapira and we are in Year 6 at Sacks Morasha Jewish Primary School. Throughout our many years at this school, we have been taught through the school’s values of SMART: Simcha, Middot, Achdut, Ruach and Torah. But we have decided to build in those values and make something SMARTER. S Silence in the classroom whilst the teacher is talking; M Many days have flown by-we’ve loved every minute; A Always in the corridor make sure you are walking; R Remember to keep up the Sacks Morasha spirit; T Teffillah we say every single day; E Etgar we look forward to in Year Five; R Remind yourselves of these thing to help you survive! We’ve walked around the school to find out from different Year groups some helpful tips and tricks for ‘how to survive primary school’. The first student we interviewed was Nate who joined Year 3 Sacks at the beginning of the year. Q: What things do you enjoy doing in the playground?

A: I love running around and playing with my buddies. Q:If you get hurt outside what do you do and where do you go? A: My friends take me to the office where they are very kind and supportive. They give me a plaster and a cute little sticker! Q: What rules do you have in the classroom and what top tips would you give? A: Always put your hand up and don’t get out of your seat without permission. My top tip is to never give up and keep on trying. Q: What has been your favourite experience at Sacks Morasha so far and why? A: I loved the Lag B’Omer trip to Legoland because all my friends were there and it was such an enjoyable experience. School trips are so much fun. The next student we talked to was Mia from Year 4. Q: What is your top tip for getting through school? A: You have to always be positive and try your best. Q:Since you have started Sacks Morasha,

what has been your favourite experience and what have you learnt from it? A: My favourite experience was our Chaggigat Siddur. I learnt to never stop trying when learning new teffillot. Q: What do you enjoy doing in the playground? A: I like chatting with my friends. Thank you so much Mia and Nate for giving us some amazing answers! Finally, Mrs Shmuel, the Assistant Head of Sacks Morasha, has given us her Top 6 Tips for primary school children. 1. Smile. Very simple, just smile. Smiling can instantly make you and others feel at ease. See if you can “pass on a smile” at least once every day. 2. Celebrate. Try to remember every single achievement, anything you are proud of, from the smallest thing like remembering to brush your teeth to the biggest things like completing a personal goal. Go out there and CELEBRATE IT. Just tell your friends, give yourself a little clap or go home and tell your parents that you are proud of yourself. Go on,do it! 3. Obstacles. Obstacles are opportunities for greatness. Don’t forget that if you make

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

a mistake whilst encountering an obstacle, mistakes are just proof that you are trying. Learn from those mistakes and continue to succeed. 4. Learn. Remember school is a place for learning, find your love for learning. It doesn’t have to be in every subject. But find something you love to learn about and cherish it. Build on it and continue to explore it forever. 5. Talk. Talk to your friends, talk to your family, talking is wonderful. I love to talk. Talk about your feelings, share your ideas, tell people what you love and/or hate. Talk about a big problem and solve it together. Talk. Talk. Talk. 6. Be kind. Last but definitely not least, my hope for you all would be to just remember one thing, “ in a world where you can be anything, be kind.” Thanks Mrs Shmuel, we really appreciate your input in this article. Hopefully you can use these skills to help YOU in you in your school. Can YOU live up to the challenge?

Husband & wife team raise thousands for charity at Royal Parks Half Marathon Husband & wife, Antony & Simone Snow, from Borehamwood, have raised an incredible £9,000 from over 100 donors split between charities GIFT and the Oli Leigh Trust for running the Royal Parks Half Marathon earlier this week. Antony explained ‘We chose GIFT as a charity through my son Kobi who was volunteering for them during Covid. Kobi got us involved delivering food for people as the charity helps so many people with so many different needs irrelevant of your background. We also choose to support the Oli Leigh Trust as we are very close to the family and they also do great work in helping teenagers in need. We initially hoped to raise £1000 but have been blown away to raise almost £9,000! We had booked into the race last year but unfortunately it got cancelled so actually to be able to complete the run was amazing as we had been training and talking about it for so long.’ Roxanne Stross GIFT’s Community Engagement Coordinator commented, “Antony and his family have been incredible volunteers, going above and beyond the normal volunteer requests, from collecting car loads of fruit and vegetables every week, delivering food support parcels as

Chief Rabbi tells EcoSynagogue we must all bear responsibility for addressing ‘horrifying’ climate change Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has told a pre COP26 EcoSynagogue event that we all need to share responsibility for addressing climate change, describing it as a “horrifying situation which threatens our world, and which threatens our grandchildren and our great grandchildren”. Chief Rabbi Mirvis was speaking at an event entitled Carbon Zero, If Not Now When? at the Jewish Museum on Sunday. He said: “No one is an island, no one can say this has got nothing to do with me – we have to bear the responsibility individually and collectively for this horrifying situation which threatens our world and which threatens our grandchildren and our great grandchildren. All of us together must play our part in guaranteeing that we fulfil our religious obligation to do what we can.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said that this was “one of the most important subjects not just for the Jewish community, not even just for humanity but for the entire planet - it threatens to upend life as we know it, that our impact on the environment has led to deterioration of climate control - but we can all still make a difference, it’s not too late.” She added that the Board of Deputies recently passed a resolution with 85 per cent in favour of declaring a climate emergency and taking appropriate steps alongside EcoSynagogue to achieve net carbon emissions.

As part of the event there was an expert panel discussing the subject, featuring Jonathan Waxman, an entrepreneur with 35 years’ experience in electrical engineering, financial market options trading and renewable energy and Dr Michal Nachmany, an international climate policy and governance expert with background in law, finance, and multinational project management. Following the expert panel, Jewish Environmental Organisations and initiatives were spotlighted including: OLAM, Commonwealth Jewish Council, World Jewish Relief, EcoSynagogue, JTree, Sadeh, and the Social Justice Committee of The Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Whitefield Hebrew Congregation Batmitzvah Ceremony

Whitefield Shul in Manchester recently held its annual Grand Bat Mitzvah ceremony, to mark the graduation of 12 local girls from CLUB12, its special Bat mitzvah programme. The girls attended monthly events in the year leading up the ceremony, all the events were fun with an educational side them. Programmes included litter picking, painting wooden letters of their Hebrew names, learning a dance routine which they performed in an old age home, making hamantaschen on Purim, a beauty session with a talk about inner beauty and much much more. Programme leader, Mychiel Balshine said that ‘the ceremony is one of the highlights of the shul year! It shows the girls how important each and

every one of them are to the Jewish people and empowers them to live a life focused on great ideals.’ At the ceremony each girl prepared a talk on their Bat mitzvah Parsha which they delivered before family and friends. The family of one graduate was unfortunately isolating at the time and therefore had to appear before the audience on zoom, something that the ceremony had never experienced before! The ceremony continued with a beautiful song from a choir, featuring the words that parents recite while lighting candles on Friday night. This was followed by a delicious celebratory dinner. The ‘nachas’ was visible on parents’ and grandparents’ faces.

Jewish Care’s Woman of Distinction Award Jewish Care is delighted to present the Woman of Distinction Award this year to Tracy-Ann Oberman for her courageous stand against antisemitism and misogyny both online and in real life. Acclaimed food writer, Claudia Roden received Jewish Care’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to the Jewish community and preserving and promoting traditional Jewish food and heritage. Raising over £55,000, the event was hosted at the Institute of Directors and was attended by 130 guests. As last year’s event took place online, guests were delighted to be back together in person to celebrate these outstanding achievements. Funds raised will go directly to Sidney Corob House, one of Jewish Care’s residential homes supporting adults with enduring mental health needs. Jewish Care’s Woman of Distinction Award luncheon was launched in 1986 as a forum for women in business in the Jewish community to celebrate true Women of Distinction. The honours are given each year to distinguished women from the Jewish community in the UK who have excelled in their chosen field and have made a significant contribution both within and outside the community. Since its inception, the Women of Distinction committee has raised close to £1.5milllion for Jewish Care’s services. This year, nine Special Recognition

Awards were also given to women who have greatly contributed to the community and the NHS during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Special thanks also go to Parks Candles for gifting each attendee with a candle to take away. Speaking to the audience, Tracy-Ann Oberman said, “I am delighted to receive this award, not just because of what it stands for but because of the work Jewish Care does for our community and beyond.” Tracy-Ann Oberman also told the audience “I come from a long line of strong Jewish women. My mother has shown me not to cower in the face of adversity.” Speaking of her experiences tackling antisemitism and misogyny, she said, “The lesson in this is that when you speak with authority and authenticity, you find your voice. Courage calls to courage. We have to say, “We’re Jewish women, we’re here to stay and we’re proud of it.”” Tracy-Ann then introduced Claudia Roden, who spoke passionately about her family’s journey and the discoveries she made talking to people about food and recipes around the world. Claudia discussed how recipes were tied to memories, and how she “Spent 16 years researching a book of Jewish food, connecting with people and personalities” She said “I didn’t want to stop and let go. I discovered my roots and heritage and wanted to keep going.”

Tracy Ann Oberman and Claudia Roden

Adam Overlander Kaye, Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement at Jewish Care said: “This year it was incredibly special to be able to hold the event back together in person. We are thrilled to be able to honour Tracy-Ann Oberman, Claudia Roden, and introduce a new Special Recognition

For us Jewish Blind & Disabled were and are a light in the darkness”. The event, held at both JW3 and online, was the charities first large in-person fundraising event since the pandemic and the first for newly appointed Chair, Marc Gordon. Speaking at the event, Marc said; “About 20 years ago I was invited by my first boss

L-R: Jonny Gould, Rob Rinder, Lisa Wimborne, Marc Gordon

to attend a Jewish Blind & Disabled dinner and ever since then I have supported the charity. I have a soft spot for this charity; the only charity that enables people with

physical disabilities and vision impairment from across our community to live independently, freely and safely in a place they can call home – their home. The majority

of our tenants weren’t born with a disability but were faced with a diagnosis where their previous home was no longer suitable and they needed to find a new home and what we do goes way beyond just bricks and mortar”. Marc also paid tribute to his predecessor John Joseph MBE, President Malcolm Ozin MBE and former Treasurer Stuart Simmons who between them have dedicated over 100 years of their time to build the charity into the organisation it is today. Following the event, Chief Executive, Lisa Wimborne commented: “It was great to be able to engage in person with our supporters both long-standing and new. We are delighted to announce that to date we have raised over £95,000 and we are hoping over the coming days to exceed the £100,000 mark. What was also special about this event is that so many people who joined us both in person and online had never been to a Jewish Blind &Disabled event before or had any engagement with our charity. We have huge ambitions over the next few years, which will know are only achievable if we increase support from across the community. If this event is the start of that journey today we are feeling positive and confident about the journey ahead”.

Runners raise funds for Kisharon in half marathon

L-R: Miranda Shemen, Danielle Donne

Nine runners have raised over 7.5K for Kisharon at the Royal Parks half marathon. The route took in the capital’s world-famous landmarks and four of London’s eight Royal Parks including Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens. The final figure is expected to be higher for Kisharon as donations are still coming in.

The runners were delighted to have competed in the event. Gav Noe said, “Kisharon encompasses the very core of Jewish values. It is a privilege to be able to play a small part helping Kisharon keep up the vital work.” Rachel Blain took up running at the start of the pandemic and was doing her first half marathon. Rachel visited Kisharon’s new school campus where she met a number

of the pupils before the race. “This made it all the more special and inspired me to fundraise,” she said. “I ran for the people Kisharon supports and staff I met and could not be prouder.” Michael Bibring noted, “Kisharon is a wonderful charity and does some truly great work.” Danielle Donne and her daughter, Miranda raced together to benefit the charity. Danielle said, “Having run for Kisharon multiple times over the years it is a privilege to help raise funds for such a crucial charity.” Miranda added, “Kisharon continues to stand as one of the most beautiful charities in our community.” Retired special needs teacher Linda Lazarus has supported Kisharon by completing a London marathon and three Royal Parks events. “Kisharon inspires me to continue raising funds,” she said. “The amazing facilities, education and support for these special children and their families is an inspiration.” Ari Blum has been involved in the charity as a volunteer and employee. “I have seen for myself just how important their work is,” he said. Suzanne Weiniger added, “I love running

Norwood supporters raise £431,000 at annual Distressing Investing Dinner More than 230 supporters gathered for the annual Norwood Distressed Investing Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday evening. Members of the distressed investing community took the opportunity to network and hear insights from guest of honour The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, as they raised £431,000 for the charity supporting people with learning disabilities and autism and children and their families facing challenges. The 16th annual event was sponsored by longstanding supporter Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld – who have been instrumental to the event’s continued success. The dinner was Norwood’s first in-person corporate event to take place in 18 months, after last year’s event was postponed due to lockdown. Welcoming guests to the event, Norwood Distressed Investing Committee member Gordon Singer spoke of his delight at the return of the industry calendar fixture, as he reminded attendees that their support was more vital than ever to secure “funds to provide vital and life-changing services to the thousands of people Norwood supports”. Reiterating the urgent need for support ahead of a touching appeal for funds, Norwood Chair Neville Kahn added: “Over the

receives from Norwood, when he went to live in a Norwood residential service aged 46, Neville Kahn reflected that he was “proud to be called a second family to many; proud to have such a dedicated team that deliver life-changing support…proud to be raising awareness to our Distressed Investing community, and more importantly, raising vital funds”. Elsewhere, The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP offered valuable industry insights in a fireside chat with Gordon Singer. Speaking on the role of charity in supporting the care of people with learning disabilities, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations paid tribute to Norwood’s “unceasing commitment to caring for its community”. “The true testament to Norwood’s value is the way it enables the individuals it supports to live their most fulfilling lives and the trust the Jewish community places in it to be there for some of its most vulnerable members at every stage of their lives,” he added. The evening came to a close with a special performance by ‘Master Mentalist’ Ben Hanlin, star of the award-winning ITV2 shows ‘Tricked’ and ‘Ben Hanlin’s Live & Deadly: Drowned’, which was generously sponsored by Ankura.

From the front line…

MONEY, MAZAL, MEDALS, MOSCOW and MORE…

BY JACQUELINE CURZON They say, ‘it’s a dog-eat-dog world,’ and this is often most evident in the financial sector. Ministers have been accused of hypocrisy after bosses at Britain’s nationalised rail operators were handed a gargantuan pay rise, despite rail workers being forced to accept a two-year freeze on wages. Six executives on the board of DfT OLR Holdings, which runs the LNER and Northern Rail networks, jointly shared a remuneration of £720,000, whilst the firm received a subsidy of nearly £1.4 billion from the Exchequer to keep services running during the pandemic. The board's combined increase is comparable to that of the BBC Director-General, Tim Davie, who has received a handsome pay rise of £75,000 after one year in post. Davie's pay has jumped to £525,000, making his salary more than three times higher than the PM, who earns £160,000 including earnings above baseline salary. Nigel Mills, Conservative MP, went further, saying “salaries for top executives and stars are too high at the BBC,“ adding that the 'public view on pay could not be clearer.’ The BBC maintains however that they kept the salary for top roles below that of their competitors, who variously earn between £833,000 and £1.03 million. In other financial news, Euan Blair (37), son of the former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, has amassed a paper fortune worth more than £160 million, after securing a record investment for his education technology start-up, Multiverse. Young Mr Blair, now estimated to be considerably wealthier than his father, has previously spoken out against pressure on school leavers to attend university, arguing the system leaves graduates ill-equipped for the world of work. This is true, aside from the massive debts students incur, and most of us don’t have a Blair father (or son) figure to bail us out, should our finances overwhelm us. A table tennis bat bought for £3.50 at a car boot sale has been sold for £1,000, after it turned out to be an extremely rare Victorian silver-lined bat, dating back to 1900. A pair of ancient Egyptian sphinx statues used as garden ornaments, which had been repaired with modern cement, have been snapped up by an art gallery. The statues were previously thought to be replicas and were valued at £300 - £500, but in fact sold for £241,800 including commission. Also going under the hammer soon are diamond bracelets belonging to Marie Antoinette, which are estimated to reach £3m at auction. She sent the jewels to Austria before her execution in 1793, and they were given to her daughter, Marie Theresa, who famously wore them in her 1816 portrait. In America, a nurse who discovered the bodies of a multimillionaire American couple, is suing their estate and seeking damages for emotional trauma. Lisa Ann Hayes, who cared for Alexandra Jacobs, wife

Jacqueline Curzon PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY

of the prominent investor Erwin Jacobs, walked into their Minnesota mansion in April 2019, to find them dead as a result of a murder-suicide pact. Hayes' attorney, Brian Stofferahn, said, ‘she was now diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and has been unable to work since the incident.’ She is reportedly seeking $12.5 million, however the Jacobs family lawyers intend to seek dismissal of the lawsuit, calling it a ‘grotesque betrayal’ by a once trusted caregiver who was treated like family. I remember my late father ‫ ה״ע‬telling me that many years earlier, he and his youngest brother had found their eldest sibling dead in his home. It was during winter, the lights and the heating were on full, and no one had heard or seen him for weeks. I gather it was a rather gruesome discovery, but Dad didn't dwell on it. Instead he was just grateful his brother had been found and was buried with dignity. I myself sat alone with several relatives in hospital as they breathed their last, and also found a close friend dead in her bed. These were of course heartbreaking situations, but in a way I think they were comforted knowing (hopefully) that I was with them. At the end of one's life journey, I believe presence, kindness and gentleness are especially valued. Oddly enough, the idea of benefiting financially from any of those situations would not have even occurred to me. Ms Hayes may indeed have been traumatised, but it seems a huge amount to seek as a way of alleviating her discomfort. Media articles reporting on the use of appropriate terminology for females and males, demonstrates an unremitting nightmare. British Airways have announced they will be dispensing with the familiar ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ greeting, although it’s unclear what they will replace the salutation with - ‘Rainbow People,’ maybe? It’s become impossible to be a man, but most especially a woman, in 21st century Britain. The Scottish government has climbed back upon their hillock and announced that cancer screening (smear test) is to be advertised for ‘anyone with a cervix’…..

The word ‘woman’ has been effectively expunged from promotional vocabulary, as was evident when Labour MP Rosie Duffield was accused of transphobia for stating ‘only women have a cervix.’ According to a leading policy analysis group, almost 50% of Scottish women don’t know what a cervix is !! which is an utter condemnation of a failing education system. Sturgeon's avowal to reform gender laws will make it virtually impossible for anyone to self identify as a woman, unless ‘she’ was first a ‘he.’ Now to a remarkable lady. Masked attackers who tied up a 72-year-old lady and stole her jewellery and heirlooms, have been ordered to repay just £1 each. Eriks Valants (23) and Jed Martin (27) broke into the home of Susan Hunt in Hampshire in 2020, frogmarched her out of bed, and tied her to the banister before ransacking her home. They stole a Cartier ring, Omega watch, pearl necklace, diamonds and a WWII Military Cross, along with a letter signed by King George, belonging to her father-in-law. None of these were recovered. Mrs Hunt was able to bite through the tape around her hands and get to a phone to call the police, an incredibly resourceful and brave act by this lady. The villains were jailed for 10 years each at Winchester Crown Court. After sentencing, action was taken under the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover funds from the pair, however the judge permitted them to pay only £1 as there was no money left of the £462,000 they have made from their crimes to date. In mitigation, Valants admitted he felt ‘significant remorse’ after the robbery, adding he was unemployed at the time. Surely if he was remorseful, he would have returned her property and apologised. I'm sure Mrs Hunt was suitably stung by the disgraceful recompense of £2 what a joke! On the topic of medals, we know of many Jewish athletes and runners taking part in marathons for charity, London being the biggest in the world. This year 40,000 runners were scheduled to take part - with an additional 40,000 joining virtually. At the finish line, those completing the course were awarded their medals, but the medals were handed out in sugar cane bags, done to minimise contact between runners and stewards, and to make it more covid secure. From a time perspective, the difference between fastest man and fastest women was only 13 minutes, and the respective winner and runner-up in both groups were all from Kenya and Ethiopia. James Cracknell, the Olympic rower took part, as did some media personalities. On that note, I’d like to personally congratulate Flora Frank (78), who has just run her 42nd marathon, along with many others supporting Norwood, Kisharon and Emunah, to mention but a few worthy causes. On a related medal note, a RAF veteran who flew the last Lancaster back to Britain near the end of WWII, has been awarded his

Bomber Command medal. Ken Symonds (97) lost an engine during the final raid of the European offensive above Berchtesgaden, and the damage sustained meant his plane was the last one to return to RAF Syerston after the sortie in April 1945. Veterans who served with Bomber Command were only entitled to a clasp in 2013, after being overlooked because of civilian casualties. Squadron Leader Symonds only noticed the medal when his neighbour took him to the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, for his birthday. The neighbour, who is also his carer, applied to the MOD on his behalf only to be told it would take months to process, so she then contacted the local MP who lobbied for him, and the clasp arrived days later. The widower said, “I’m very pleased to have it and only sorry that I missed out on it the first time round. It’s extremely important for me to get this.’ Congratulations to all these medal winners. In New Jersey, a man of 31 fell 9 storeys from a high-rise building, and had the mazal to land on the roof of a stationary BMW, whereupon he stood up, amidst the car-nage and asked, ‘what happened?’ As you might expect the car was totally trashed, and it is not known if he stuck around long enough for the owner to return and seek 'damages.' In my HGV article last week I mentioned that we not only entrust our drivers to deliver, but to be safe on the roads. I specifically mentioned the use of phones as a common distraction, often resulting in fatalities. One such example is that of lorry driver Lucian-Sorin Todor (52) from Romania, who killed a motorcyclist by carrying out a dangerous manoeuvre whilst talking on his hands-free phone. The jury at Winchester Crown Court found him guilty of causing the death of Jack Burgess (22) by dangerous driving, and he was sentenced to eight years in jail. Todor claimed originally he hadn’t hit Mr Burgess but then drove off, still on the phone. Mr Burgess died in hospital from brain injuries. This makes my point, exactly. Lastly, a bit of beautiful ballet news. Congratulations to Rachel Armstrong (20), from Northumberland, who has graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow, after an intensive three year training. She is only the fourth Brit to graduate from Bolshoi, who rarely accept outsiders. She arrived in Moscow unable to speak a word of Russian but is now fluent. браво! A mention also of Pollyanna Hope (16), from Hertfordshire, who hopes to become a professional ballerina, and shows great promise, using a custom-made prosthetic leg. She lost her right leg in a bus crash when she was only two. Regardless of whether it’s one small step or one giant leap, she shows the determination to get there. Lots of luck to both ballerinas. Grand Hotel Tremezzo - Lake Como The Grande Dame of the Lake BY CARON BLUESTONE Unbelievably, this visit was to be my first. Four days of blissful exploration, pampering, gorgeous views and old school luxury in an idyllic setting. I’ve been to Italy many, many times. Countless summers in Forte Dei Marmi, Alassio and Santa Margarita. Driving from the U.K. with my parents, stopping in France, then to Switzerland and St Moritz for walking in the mountains before descending into Italy for the beach. Family memories that I treasure. This trip, although somewhat romantic - you can’t help but feel romantic with this backdrop, was however a family trip. Flying into Milan and renting a car was a breeze. Thirty minutes to Luton Airport, where parking is quick and easy, also, it’s mere minutes away from the terminal. No queues and drive-through, pre-departure Covid-19 testing in the car park next door. At the time we travelled, this was needed for entry into Italy, as it is at time of writing. Results were emailed to us, dropping into my inbox before we’d arrived at check-in. The process was stress-free, both upon departure and more so upon arrival, with luggage out quickly and no waiting at passport control. The advantages of smaller airports. Driving from Milan to lake Como took just eighty minutes. Our transfer and hire car pickup was extremely quick and easy, which makes a weekend in Lake Como a very attractive prospect. Motorway north from Milan, hit Como centre and the rest of the drive meanders through the picturesque, small villages and very narrow streets around the lake. Streets that twist and turn with views that attract a fair few bikers! We were staying at the grande dame of the lake. An iconic, art nouveau masterpiece, surrounded by some of the most exquisite gardens imaginable. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Taking pride of place in Tremezzo, on the western shore of lake Como, with views across the water to the splendid village of Bellagio. Then the Grigne mountains beyond and towards Switzerland in the north and St Moritz again in the central eastern Alps. This being my first time in lake Como, I was especially excited. Expectations were high, I’d heard only good things. As the hotel comes into view, I knew that I’d chosen well. With the beach club sitting directly on the lake, it’s one-of-a-kind, floating pool, deck chairs and cabanas reminiscent of a bygone era, sit on the beach and surround the chic Giacomo al Lago restaurant. The hotel’s unmissable, signature bright orange awnings that dress the art nouveau facade let you know that you have reached your destination. Built into the hill directly above the lake, it is the most magnificent palace imaginable. We pull into the circular gravel driveway that is flanked with palm trees, where the valets are eagerly waiting to

Pool with a view

relieve us of our car and to instantly magic away our luggage. We are invited to walk up the grand steps, to a magnificent wood-panelled, glass lift which transports guests to the main lobby of the hotel and into a world of full-on glamour. Walk out of the doors and you have truly arrived. There’s no doubt that this is a palace. Built in 1910 for the social elite to enjoy, nothing has been spared. The scale and opulence is what strikes you first. The taste with which the exquisite decor has been designed; it’s simply beautiful in every direction that you look. Traditional yet contemporary, brought to life by the juxtaposition of modern, brightly-coloured velvets on sumptuous love seats and Chesterfield sofas, perfect parquet flooring, intricate cornacing and period furniture topped off with vertiginously high ceilings. The

enormous, unusual, flower arrangements, the signature orange roses. It truly takes your breath away and is an Instagramers dream. Everything here is photogenic. From the jaw-dropping panorama- turn around and the whole front of the hotel with its floor to ceiling glass panels, is open directly on to the lake and mountains beyond, down to the tiniest details of the brightly-colourful sweets that are housed in delicate, blownglass jars, to which the children delighted in helping themselves one too many times! Despite the uber-luxurious and opulent nature of the hotel, what really makes for an unforgettable experience is this combination with a warm and totally professional team of staff who make it their job to make you feel immediately at home. higher up the hotel class ladder you climb. At the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, we felt truly welcomed and ours were certainly not the only children at the hotel. They soon made friends in the clubby snooker room, which they quickly discovered whilst exploring the grandiose corridors of the hotel. Every space in this Belle Epoque triumph has a unique feel and personality. Statement furniture, luxurious Como silks, the elegant dining rooms and splendid halls are a joy in themselves. What is extremely appealing about the hotel though, is definitely the homely feel. You want to sit down, relax, take everything in and enjoy the surroundings. No feeling of being in an ornate museum here. Every detail adds value, creates wonderful memories. The views to the back of the palace are as extraordinary as those to the front. For this is the park side. The verdant park that extends high up to the top of the hill - a fifteen minute easy trek with a surprise at the top - well worth the walk if you don’t mind heights - the secluded, awe-inspiring second, heated outdoor pool, the tennis court and outdoor pizza restaurant are all ensconced in its exotic greenery. Plenty of sun beds set in intimate corners, attentive staff at hand and views again to the lake beyond the hotel. Once checked in, we took the fabulously ornate, back lift up to the fourth floor and to our interconnecting rooms. We could have walked up the fabulous staircase with huge windows and garden views but left that for

14 OCTOBER 2021 later. The corridor, decorated to perfection, a giant arrangement of beautiful red roses and the hotel’s signature scent fills the air. Opening the doors we weren’t disappointed. You would think that with such a grand entrance, the bedrooms would have to be a let down, but to the contrary, things just kept getting better and better. Both of our interconnecting bedrooms had small balconies with seating, both had huge windows and both had views to die for. Waking up each morning to picture-perfection of the lake is an experience in itself. The luxury and sumptuousness of the decor in communal spaces is carried through to the bedrooms. Electric blinds, huge marble bathrooms with deep tubs and really powerful showers and my personal favourite, the hotel’s own luxury toiletries. Pretty bottles and generous sizes of everything that you might need, including their signature scent in a pretty perfume bottle, which I had to bring home and in fact, am wearing as I write. Everything that you would expect from an uber-luxurious hotel is at your disposal. We stayed in May, the week we were there temperatures were better than pleasant. Short sleeves, no need for cardigans, swimming in the heated back pool and sunbathing were all a pleasure however, I have to mention the magnificent and award-winning T Spa and indoor to outdoor infinity pool, complete with grotto and hydromassage. Accessed via the front lift and sitting one floor below the ground floor, facing, of course out on to the lake. Day beds for relaxing and watching life on the lake through the floor to ceiling windows. The Spa offers everything that you could wish for from a spectacular, Italian white Lasa marble hammam suite, the extravagant and highly glamorous Mosaico Studio for everything hands, feet and hair and a yoga studio. Plus a full heat experience with a sauna, steam room and ice fountain. Pampering here is not a problem and the treatments and facilities are state-of-the art and beautifully appointed. A visit or three is obligatory! With five distinct bars and restaurants, all with optimum atmosphere and those jaw-dropping views; some outdoors, some in, the hotel has the capacity to cater to kosher guests with new pots and pans for each. Sit out on one of the terraces and feel totally and utterly indulged. Although we could have stayed within the hotel and its grounds, there is so much to offer outside. You can simply stroll from the front door to visit the stunning museum of Villa Carlotta with its fascinating botanical gardens. This truly is a must do. Over three hundred years old, the villa combines a historical, artistic and botanical heritage on Lake Como. There’s both a longer and shorter walking tour through the gardens which offer a true kaleidoscope of colour. They offer a family experience too with tours and games to attract the younger visitors. Each day we did something different. Making the most of our four nights. For the shopaholics, make the short drive across the border and into Switzerland to Mendrisio, where you will find FoxTown. A vast outlet mall bursting with designer bargains from the likes of Prada to Zegna to Ralph Lauren. We all came away with something

and spent far too much money, but oh what good value! We were away over my husband’s birthday and so were particularly well-looked after with plenty of wonderful surprises, but by far and away the most unforgettable was our private boat tour around the lake. The children were enchanted and I’m certain that they will keep cherished memories. Stepping onto the traditional, gleaming wooden venetian motor boat; classic and so very stylish, you feel as if you are living la dolce vita at its best. Utterly spoiled, we sat back and enjoyed the wind in our hair, the late afternoon sunshine and a fantastic tour of the lake, the lakeside villas, historical homes and their histories, some obligatory stories of George Clooney and of course the children got to steer the boat! I had never been one for boats, however, this truly luxurious experience converted me within seconds of stepping aboard. Our captain was a superstar and captivated all our attention throughout. Bellagio is a must and kills two birds with one stone. The ferry stop is a ten minute stroll from the hotel, the ride directly across to Bellagio takes a mere ten minutes, so grab a seat upstairs and enjoy. Being situated at the heart of the lake, directly opposite the hotel, Bellagio, or the ‘Pearl of Lake Como’ is famous for its two villas Serbelloni and Melzi but you can’t help but fall in love the minute your eyes meet the boats and the waterfront scene that greet them. Bellagio is a maze of cobbled streets and boutiques, green-shuttered colourful buildings, parks and picturesque churches. It is unmissable and for this reason, can get busy. So plan your visit well and be prepared to walk, walk, walk! In the blink of an eye, our trip was over. Travelling as we did during covid, before the quarantine that exists as I write on entry to Italy- hopefully to be dropped for UK citizens soon, we felt totally and utterly at ease and safe. The hotel follows the protocols strictly, they even produce their own signature orange sanitiser. Also, the common areas are all so wide open and airy. Breathing in fresh lake air, never felt so healthy. ASK THE RABBI

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com WHEN DAIRY ISN’T DAIRY

Dear Rabbi How is it possible for sweets (candies) to be labelled as Kosher Parve Kedassia and yet to state that “they might contain traces of milk”? The sweets in question are sugar-free fruit flavoured candies by World Food (France). By the way, I loved reading your G-d In The Womb story, which I shall keep for any person who needs a little convincing. Kindest regards, Malcolm Dear Malcolm The key is “might.” By definition, there may be negligible particles left over from previous production, which is possible even after cleaning or koshering. Some people can be so sensitive to dairy that even the slightest trace can trigger a severe allergic reaction. When only labelling a product as “Parve” one might assume it perfectly safe to eat. Hence it is essential for health and safety reasons to indicate in certain instances where it is relevant, that it may contain traces of milk. So it is a safety warning rather than a kashrus one. And any such airborne particles do not pose any kashrus issue.

IS THIS PIG KOSHER?

Dear Rabbi My child has been offered the option of a flu vaccination but through the nose. The problem is it has pork gelatine in it. Is this a problem? Is there more scope for leniency with children? Harold Dear Harold There is no problem whatsoever

with porcine or other animal derived ingredients in non-oral products. The prohibition is strictly non-kosher consumption and a nasal spray is not considered consumption. Moreover, Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski once ruled that even feeding non-kosher through a feeding tube, where required, wouldn’t be a problem as again, it doesn’t constitute consumption i.e. eating something normally by way of mouth.

WHAT IS LOVE?

Dear Rabbi Is it proper to love your spouse? Ari Dear Ari I have no idea what on earth you mean by your question but since you asked, let me give you context. Sometimes your love towards another person may not be that different from your love of steak. You may love your spouse because of what you receive in return. You enjoy your spouse’s physical and emotional qualities; you cherish your partner’s looks, food, wisdom and kindness. This form of reciprocal love is not necessarily a bad thing. It is what makes the world go round. Because we are self-oriented creatures, we must feel that our relationships are based on a give and take dynamic. The only problem is, this sort of love has its limitations. What happens when some of those attractive qualities wane, or if you come across someone whom you believe to have superior qualities? Moreover, and this is key,

reciprocal love doesn’t capture the full majesty of which the human spirit is capable. It satisfies the basic human ego but it fails to satisfy the higher soul created in the image of G-d. Hence there is another, altogether higher form of love – one which is unconditional. I love the very “you;” not merely the “you” that benefits me, but the very core and essence of your being. Essentially, the difference between the two loves mentioned is that one is for a reason and is eminently subject to change. The other is for no reason at all and will endure forever. It is all really summed up in the Mishna in Ethics of the Fathers: Any love that is dependent on something, when that thing ceases, the love also ceases. But a love that is not dependent on anything never ceases. Both types of love are appropriate but think of the love a parent has for a child. Regardless of how the child behaves, a healthy parent still loves the child and does not – cannot disown the child. That’s what we aspire to in relationships as well. I don’t know if that’s the answer you were looking for but it should certainly provide you with plenty of food for thought.

THE TRANSGENDER MINYAN “MAN”

Dear Rabbi There was a recent article I read about an Orthodox Synagogue which decided to include a transgender woman in a minyan as she was born male. What is the Halachic position on this? Morris

THE PERFECT GIFTS FOR

NEW

ANY TIME & ANYONE

Dear Morris The whole notion of transgender is complex as far as Jewish law is concerned. On the one hand, the fact that one chooses to identify differently to their birth gender, and may have even performed surgery accordingly, doesn’t change the fact that they were born of a particular gender and in the eyes of Jewish law that is what they remain. On the other hand, several Jewish implementations are on account of gender appearance. One example is the mechitza partition in Orthodox synagogues where men sit on one side and women on the other, so as not to be distracted from prayer. Now that he may look like (and be considered by society as) a she, which side of the mechitza do they sit on? In the particular case in point,

there is a certain self-evident absurdity. On the one hand, it would be halachically correct to maintain that the individual in question was born a he and therefore can be included in the minyan. At the same time, one would argue, because the individual concerned has all the external characteristics of a woman, they should sit in the ladies section. But, the wardens of said Synagogue said they were being mindful and sensitive to the concerns of the individual. To my mind, telling the person, “I know you think you are a woman but for the next several hours we will consider you a man,” is most insulting to them. Like I said, a complex issue, and nowhere more so than in the contradictions (hypocrisy?) of society.

Lech Lecha: Avraham’s Dilemma BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN You could not have scripted a better scenario. Avraham was missioned to preach a new religion to a confused world. He spoke of a “one G-d” who alone, created diversity and dichotomy. He also spoke of a G-d who was moral and compassionate rather than angry and hostile. Reversing two-thousand years of errant religious thought was demanding, and progress was gradual. Having vanquished four powerful chieftains, Avraham hits the “jackpot”. For over a decade the world had been immersed in a bloody political struggle which finally erupted into a worldwide war. Chances for peace seemed remote, as an alliance of four ferocious warlords terrorized the region. Courageously, Avraham intercedes, rescuing his nephew from captivity and ending the violence. As was prophesized, Avraham has now become an internationally acclaimed agent of human welfare. He has now provided “beracha” for humanity, securing both their lives and their safety. In the wake of his heroism, Avraham’s popularity is at an all-time high. Possessing extraordinary influence, he has the rare opportunity to immediately inspire thousands toward faith and belief. Not only has Avraham become an “influencer”, but he also possesses legal claim to the citizens of Sedom, whom he protected from certain death. Ancient war protocols dictated that these rescued people were now indebted to serve Avraham as their lord. This ancient “right” was implied by the King of Sedom, who desperately pleaded with Avraham for the reparation of his subjects back to his kingdom. In exchange for his people, who Avraham had legal rights to, he offers Avraham all the riches he desires. Here is Avraham’s opportunity. An entire population can be converted to monotheism. Moreover, these people reside in the corrupt and wicked city of Sedom. Soon they will be buried alive under a blitz of sulphuric fire. Avraham is gift-wrapped an opportunity not just to sway people to his new religion but to rescue them from fiery death. Here is the chance he has been waiting for. Yet, for some strange reason, Avraham flinches. Refusing to demand the transfer of the rescued citizens of Sedom, he also defers any monetary reward. Emphatically, he raises his hand to heaven and declares that he will not demand even a “string or a shoe-lace”. His bold decision is so stunning and unexpected that even Chazal question his behavior. The gemara in Nedarim records that our exile to Egypt, was, in part, a punishment for Avraham’s mistake in declining the opportunity to convert the

wayward citizens of Sedom. What was on Avraham’s mind as he passed up on this gift-wrapped opportunity? Avraham faced an intriguing but complex dilemma. He aspired to launch a new religion and draw the world away from its pagan lifestyle. Part of his message though, was of a moral G-d who expected human beings to behave compassionately and morally. Living in a violent world of bloodshed and torture, Avraham offered something different: justice, morality, honor, and charity. Though the first book of the Torah is called Bereishit or Genesis, Chazal referred to it and the Book of “yesharim” or kind people. Our ancestors modeled a new way of behavior: kind-heartedness, integrity and honesty. Snatching the citizens of Sedom – just because he could- would have compromised Avraham’s revolution. Perhaps the numbers of believers would have increased, but this growth of monotheism would have been accomplished through greed and selfishness. In demanding the surrender of an entire population Avraham would be no different from other warlords who levied their cruel demands upon innocent civilians. The prospect of constructing a new religious mindset upon selfish or immoral behavior is unfathomable. Avraham cannot behave as a rapacious mercenary. The conversion of the heathens would have to wait. The foundation of religion is moral conscience, and it is inconceivable to launch a religious revolution by “seizing” human beings. Perhaps Avraham’s moral calculus was mistaken. The gemara’s explicit critique of his decision indicates as much. Perhaps, he should have opted for rescuing these citizens from further moral depravity and, ultimately, from an apocalyptic death. Perhaps their situation was so dire that forceful measures were be justified. However, Avraham’s moral deliberation is understandable and justifiable. He faces a real dilemma for which there is no obvious solution. Can he advance religion through morally aggressive behavior! Shouldn’t he himself, model the generosity and charity which he had uncovered in Hashem! Avraham’s dilemma reinforces the vital role of moral behavior within religious identity. The gemara in Shabbat records the Heavenly accounting to which we will all be summoned in the next life. The first question we are asked is whether we conducted ourselves with honesty and integrity. Without that baseline of moral and compassionate behavior, our ritual and ceremony rings with hypocrisy. For hundreds of years the prophets of the First Temple era railed against the pretense of religion piety absent of moral consideration. The Mikdash was filled with sacrifices and ceremony, but

Avraham’s dilemma reinforces the vital role of moral behavior within religious identity. society at large was devoid of conscience and compassion. The high cannot stand without the low. If the foundation is flimsy the tower will fall. Avraham struggled with the prospect of constructing Judaism through a “population grab”. Not only was such a decision morally questionable, it may also have backfired. Every human being possesses an inner compass which calibrates an innate sense of right and wrong. If people associate religion or religious people with immoral behavior, they tend to become alienated from religion. How successful would Avraham had been –long-term- if his religious entourage was assembled through coercion. Rav Kook wrote extensively about the repellent effect of religion perceived as immoral. He believed- at least in his generation- that the large exodus from religion was caused by dissatisfaction with alleged immoral components of religion. Much of this is still true in our era. Sadly, religious people and religious communities haven’t always sufficiently rallied around moral causes. Often, this is a product of non-religious communities adopting social justice movements and moral causes. Too often, these causes or agendas become associated with non-religious communities. In response, and seeking to distance themselves from non-religious Jewish identity, religious Jews tend to cede moral platforms

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

to others. Regrettably, moral causes and sometimes even concern for personal moral conduct are perceived as the exclusive domain of the non-religious. In Israel, religious communities have sometimes surrendered moral platforms because they are associated with left wing secular parties, which are generally hostile to religious agendas. Secular organizations in Israel have long championed social justice and social welfare movements. Ceding these agendas, religious parties have, by and large, focused upon parochial religious issues or upon settling the land of Israel. Given the political polarities in Israel, this dichotomy between secular “moral” populations and “morally apathetic” religious communities has become extremely radicalized. Though much of this stereotype if based on false perceptions, at least some of it is true. Religious communities aren’t always sufficiently attendant to moral issues- whether social or personal. Avraham’s dilemma still challenges his descendants. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/ Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

Weekly Dvar Torah F R O M E R E TZ Y I S R A E L

Walking with G-d BY RABBI MENACHEM LEIBTAG “Halacha” is the word that we all use to describe Jewish Law. Yet, in the Torah itself, it is never used in that context. Instead, we find many other words such as “chok”, “mishpat”, “mitzvah” etc., for technically speaking “halacha” implies ‘a way to walk’. So why does our tradition use specifically the word “halacha” to describe Jewish Law? The answer may lie in the opening and closing sections of Parashat Lech Lecha. Lech Lecha is not only the name of this week’s Parasha, it is also the very first word (and command) that Avraham hears directly from G-d: The L-RD said to Abram, “Go forth from your native land… to the land that I will show you.” (Bereishit 12:1) In the eight verses that follow, that very same verb (“lalechet” – to walk) is used at least four times to describe that seminal journey of our forefather to the Land of Israel.

Then, towards the conclusion of Parashat Lech Lecha in the opening line of chapter 17, we find the same verb, but now in its reflexive form (“hitpael”). In contrast to its first use as a one-time instruction, now it defines an eternal commandment: When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the L-RD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai. Walk before Me and be blameless.” (Bereishit 17:1) This verse serves as G-d’s introduction to His eternal covenant to be made with Avraham and his offspring – where G-d promises both a special Land and special relationship with a Nation, chosen to serve Him forever: I will uphold My covenant between Me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations, as an everlasting covenant, to be a G-d to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give the land where you sojourn to you and to your offspring after you, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession, and

Lech Lecha

Sidra Summary

I will be their G-d. (Bereishit 17:7-8) Interestingly, we find a very similar introductory phrase (also followed by a covenant) in the Torah’s introduction to the Flood story, used to describe the virtues of Noach: This is the line of Noach – Noach was a righteous man; he was blameless in his age; Noach walked with G-d. (Bereishit 6:9) The Torah here contrasts between Noach and Avraham. Noach was chosen for who he was. Avraham and his offspring are chosen for what they need to be! An even more striking parallel between Avraham and Noach is clear when the Flood story concludes with G-d’s ‘Rainbow Covenant’, His promise never to destroy His Creation again, which is linguistically similar to His ‘Circumcision Covenant’ with Avraham in chapter 17. In both covenants, we find very similar phrases: • I will uphold my covenant between Me and you (9:11; 17:7) • an everlasting covenant (“brit Olam” 9:12,16; 17:7,13) • a sign (reminder) (“ot brit” rainbow 9:12-13; circumcision 17:11) • G-d’s Name – “Elokim” (9:8,12,16,17;

17:3,7,8,9) As the Flood story sets the thematic stage for G-d’s choice of an Avraham Avinu in Sefer Bereishit, these parallels may suggest that G-d’s covenant to establish a nation to serve Him must be connected to G-d’s covenant never to destroy humankind again. Possibly, if G-d can no longer ‘start over’ with His Creation, He now chooses a People that can facilitate fixing His Creation by serving as His ‘model nation’ – who will ‘walk before G-d’ and strive to be perfect in their ways. As the rest of the Torah details numerous laws and principles that will guide and regulate that ideal behavior, one could suggest that when the Rabbis over the centuries attempt to apply the Torah’s guidelines to any specific new situation, they refer to their legal conclusion as “halacha” – for, in essence, when we follow “halacha”, we are not only obeying laws, we are trying our best to ‘walk before G-d’. Rabbi Menachem Leibtag is an internationally acclaimed Tanach scholar and online Jewish education pioneer. He is a member of the Mizrachi Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/speakers).

copious gifts as ‘payment’. G-d strikes Pharaoh with a plague. Suspecting that Sarah may in fact be Avraham’s wife, Pharaoh confronts Avraham and then orders him and Sarah to leave. They travel back to Cana’an with Lot.

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEREISHIT 12:1-13

G-d appears to Avraham (at this stage still called Avram), telling him to leave his homeland, Charan (Babylonia), and travel to a land “that G-d would show him”, where he would flourish and father a great nation. Avraham takes his wife Sarah (at this stage still called Sarai), his nephew Lot and his entire household. They arrive in Cana’an. Avraham travels throughout the Land. Famine strikes and they are forced to go down to Egypt in order to survive. Afraid of being killed if the Egyptians discover that Sarah is his wife, Avraham asks her to say she is his sister.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 12:14-13:4

Pharaoh’s officers take Sarah away to their master’s house. They give Avraham

future Temple offerings will protect the nation. Birds of prey descend on the carcasses. Avraham falls into a deep sleep. G-d tells him that his offspring will be enslaved in a foreign land for 400 years. Sarah, still childless, tells Avraham to take her maidservant, Hagar, as a second wife. Hagar becomes pregnant and is disrespectful to Sarah, who sends her away. An angel appears to Hagar in the desert, telling her to subjugate herself to Sarah. Hagar gives birth to Yishmael.

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 13:5-13:18

Arguments break out between the shepherds of Avraham and Lot. Avraham suggests that they part ways. Lot chooses to live in the immoral city of Sedom. G-d appears to Avraham and promises that his offspring, who will be countless, shall inherit the Land.

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 14:1-14:20

A war breaks out among nine kings. The king of Sedom is defeated and Lot is taken captive. This prompts Avraham to mobilise his small force, which miraculously defeats the victorious kings and rescues Lot. Point to Consider: Who came to tell Avraham that Lot had been taken captive? (see Rashi to 14:13)

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 14:21-15:6

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 17:7-17:27

Avraham refuses the King of Sedom’s offer to keep the spoils of the war. Avraham relays his pain to G-d at being childless. G-d tells him that his offspring will be countless, like the stars.

G-d instructs Avraham in the mitzvah of brit milah. G-d says that Sarah will have a child, Yitzchak. Avraham circumcises both himself and Yishmael.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 15:7-17:6

The Biblical prophet Yeshaya (Isaiah) reassures Israel that even when they are downtrodden, G-d does not tire of them and does not forget them; He remains in charge of Creation and we remain His chosen people.

Wary of future sins, Avraham asks for a hint as to how his offspring will merit to inherit and to keep the Land (see the Ramban’s commentary). G-d instructs Avraham to cut up several animals, indicating that the

Lech Lecha: What Makes A Patriarch? BY GAVRIEL COHN The Torah records nothing of Avraham’s early life and his search for G-d (– for that we have to rely on the anecdotes of our Sages and on a biography that the Rambam meticulously pieced together). Instead, in this week’s Torah portion, we are plunged straight into Avraham’s later wanderings around the Land of Canaan: After being commanded by G-d to travel to “the Land that G-d will show you,” Avraham arrived in Canaan. There, he brought an offering and proclaimed his faith in G-d. A famine then forced him and Sara to relocate to Egypt. Sara was seized by Pharaoh but soon released after Pharaoh was stricken by a plague. Avraham and Sara then returned to Canaan, having amassed great wealth in Egypt. He again pitched his tent in Canaan and proclaimed to all the existence of G-d. Yet, in Canaan, his shepherds were soon quarrelling with those of his nephew, Lot. Avraham begged: “Please let there be no strife between you and I for we are brothers… Is not all the land before you, can you (Lot) separate yourself from me?” So Lot settled in the lush plains near Sodom. Avraham was then again promised many descendants by G-d, and

in response Avraham proclaimed G-d’s greatness. Then, in a local war between the rival chiefdoms of Canaan, Lot was kidnapped. Avraham armed his household attendants and conducted a daring night raid, rescuing Lot and plundering those fiefdoms. Yet, he refused to take any spoils for himself (“I lift my hand up to G-d… I shall not take as much as a thread”). After these dramatic events, Avraham enters into an almost physical contract with G-d, guaranteeing that his chosen offspring will inherit the Land. After Hagar, Sara’s maidservant that she had given to Avraham, gives birth to Yishmael, Hagar becomes disdainful of her master, Sara. Sara “deals with Hagar harshly” and so Hagar flees into the desert with her son. Then, as a sign to Avraham and his chosen descendant’s now-sealed connection to G-d’s Land, Avraham is instructed to perform a brit milah (marking the place where the specific progeny of his assigned to the Land, will issue from). The contents of this week’s sedra seem strange. Avraham’s life is occupied with travelling, tending his flock, politics, local skirmishes, and family tension, all the while being given divine blessings of owning a Land still populated with its indigenous tribes and prophecies of fortune and many descendants. It’s not the life you may have expected from a great Patriarch and founder of a nation. Surely, Avraham should have imposed himself as a powerful, dominating overlord, crusading

A GREAT NATION

Genesis 12:2, the beginning of the parashah, promises that G-d will make us a great nation. “Great” can have many meanings. It cannot denote great in numbers, since the Torah itself says that Israel will be one of the smaller nations on earth. “Great” cannot indicate fame or status, as if we had the right to advertise and show off our prestige, power and significance: that would be mere exhibitionism. The best interpretation of the adjective great is ethical – a nation that strives for moral quality and ethical excellence. Is this really true of the land or people of Israel? Maybe not (yet) – but we have a vision, a conscience, a dream, and we constantly do our best to be worthy of it. Edmond Fleg wrote a book titled “The Land where G-d Dwells”, and that title encapsulates our greatness as the land where the people endeavour to live an upright life that accords with the Divine ethical call.

PARTING OF THE WAYS

Abraham and Lot decide to part company. One will go to the right, the other to the left.

The question is why their separation takes place when their shepherds have had a quarrel. Surely it is the two principals, Abraham and Lot, who should work out the situation: why let the servants, the shepherds, necessitate the decisions? It is out of character for Abraham not to be tolerant and patient, even if Lot irks him. The problem is that each group of shepherds backs their own employer. Lot has nasty, grasping servants for whom Abraham and his servants need to be put down. Abraham’s own workers are alarmed and they feel that the Lot brigade is unfair and unappreciative. Each group of servants defends their own employers. With servants like these, it is best for Abraham and Lot to separate.

THREE STEPS UP

At the beginning of the sidra, G-d tells our patriarch Abraham to leave his land, his kindred and his father’s house (Gen. 12:1). Nachmanides sees a series of challenges in these three elements of Abraham’s background. It is hard to leave one’s country, but if it has to be done, one can manage it. It is harder to leave the kindred with whom one’s upbringing has been bound up, but if one makes a big enough effort it is possible.

through the region and subjugating others. After all, even before Avraham set out to Canaan, G-d had promised him greatness: “I will make you into a great nation; I will bless you and will make your name great... all those who curse you will be cursed.” One would think that with this divine encouragement ringing in his ears, Avraham would have proclaimed himself King of the Land and demanded “all the families of the Earth” to serve him, thereby fulfilling G-d’s wishes that he achieve prominence and good fortune. Yet instead, Avraham seems to be the exact opposite of a typical warrior-king supposedly invested with a divine mandate: Avraham never acts pompously, despite his affluence and success. He remains dignified, modest, and uninterested in accumulating wealth. With extreme fortitude, even after they had drifted apart, he displays immense kindness towards his nephew, never hesitating to exert himself or place himself in danger. [Although, admittedly, Avraham’s role in the family tensions involving Hagar and Yishmael may not have been ideal (Ramban). Perhaps it shows us that no one is infallible and that, unfortunately, household difficulties certainly exist: Even the most righteous of people can face familial strife (see R’ Sacks and R’ Hertz)]. Despite having to both support his dependents and travel the Land, Avraham never ceases to show gratitude to G-d, serving Him and teaching others His

ways. Furthermore, the divine promises of immortal fame, territory, and a huge number descendants that G-d constantly tells him of, never inflate him with any sense of self-importance. Instead, these promises cause him to be even more focused on only one aim: ensuring that G-d’s wishes materialise, that his descendants will indeed fulfil the divine plan of settling the Land. The end of this week’s sedra thus details him circumcising his household, determined to mark them with this sign, reminding them that they must preserve this loyalty to G-d. Thus, this week’s sedra, describing Avraham’s later years of wandering Egypt and Canaan, do indeed best characterise a true Jewish Patriarch and founder of the Jewish People: Not a forceful, dominating king-like ruler, intent on crusading and conquering in the name of supposedly fulfilling G-d’s wishes; but rather a caring person, whose “good eye and humble spirit” shine forth as he travels the Land, embroiled in the thicket of life’s affairs all the while striving to serve G-d and help those around him (see Pirkei Avot, 5:19; Rambam, Hilchot Deot, 1:7; Hilchot Avel, 14:2). Gavriel Cohn is an informal educator at Immanuel College, Bushey. He has written a number of Torah articles for various publications. Hardest of all is leaving one’s parental home, with all its memories, feelings and associations, but a person of courage and faith can achieve it. Nachmanides says that Abraham left all three, to show how great was his love of G-d.

THE CASE FOR LOT

Abraham’s nephew Lot is not one of the Bible’s favourite people, and his wife is even worse. The name Lot probably means a cover (see Isa. 25:7), perhaps because he began his career under the protection of Abraham. What alarmed the sages was not merely his attempt to break away from his patron but the unsavoury episode of his sleeping with his daughters, leading to the emergence of the Moabites and Ammonites. But Lot was not all bad. He would not betray Abraham to the surrounding nations even though his uncle had deceived them. From Abraham he learnt the art of hospitality, even though he was wrong to protect his guests by telling the mob outside his house that they could have their way with his daughters. He was reluctant to see his hometown destroyed despite its wickedness and pleased that a nearby town was saved so that he could find shelter there. He was not the instigator of the sin with his daughters: they made him drunk so that he was unaware of what he was doing. Their action was motivated by the thought that their father was the only male still alive and if he did not father children, the

human race would become extinct. Though Mrs Lot disobeyed G-d by slowing down and was caught up in a salty tornado and became a pillar of salt – according to the rabbis, as a punishment for not giving her guests salt with their meals – ever afterwards the animals in the desert licked the pillar and enjoyed the taste. Some Midrashim think that Lot was basically a good man: they know that there is no righteous person who does only good and never sins (Kohelet 7:20). They even believe that the Messiah will be one of his family since King David descended from Ruth, who was originally a Moabite. Hashem appears to Avram for the very first time and tells him it is time to leave his birthplace and father’s home and travel instead to the Promised Land. Avram travels there together with his wife Sarai and nephew Lot along with a significant entourage, but they encounter a famine upon arrival. Avram travels to Egypt, where Sarai is captured and taken to the king. The king is punished and Avram lets Sarai go, showering Avram with presents. Avram was very rich and travelled on with Lot but soon there were fights between Lot’s shepherds and Avram’s so they part ways, with Lot heading for Sodom. Avram married Hagar, but when she was to give birth to Yishmael, Sarai no longer wanted her in the house as she was belittled by Hagar. Avram and Sarai were childless, so Hashem promised Avram that, against the usual rules of nature, they would be blessed with a child. Their names are changed to Avraham and Sarah (respectively) and Avraham does a Brit Mila on himself - despite his advanced age. He also gave a Brit Mila to Yishmael.

adassa yawned and stretched. The sun was shining through a crack in her curtains and she snuggled in bed contentedly. It was shabbos morning. That nice, quiet and peaceful time when Abba and Chaim had left for shul, but the little ones were sleeping in because they had been up late on Friday night. Hadassa got up happily, got dressed and went downstairs to daven. She wanted to start reading her new book from her favourite detective series ‘Devorah Dares’ as soon as she had finished davening. However, by the time she had finished davening, chaos reigned in the house. Yehudis and Shloime were clamoring for their breakfasts, Rivki was rushing around trying to find her shabbos shoes and Ima was very busy setting the table. Hadassa sighed, maybe if she could get the little ones settled she would still have time to read a bit of her book before lunch. She quickly helped pour cereal and milk for Yehudis and Shloime. She was just putting the last dregs of milk from Shloime’s bowl onto his spoon for him, when Ima came into the kitchen. “Phew, thank you so much for your help with breakfast.” Ima said with a big smile to Hadassa. “That was a big help, especially when I have so much to do before the guests come.” “What?” Hadassa was surprised. “I

A Warm Weclome thought we weren’t having guests for lunch today.” “Well, you know family Brodinger?” Ima replied as she started tidying up the kitchen. “Unfortunately, they are stuck for shabbos meals this week because they were meant to make Aaliyah on Wednesday, but then one of their pieces of paperwork didn’t arrive in time so they are stuck here for a week without any of their belongings, food or a place to stay!

Unfortunately we don’t have room to host them to stay, but we can definitely offer them a nice shabbos lunch. I need your help this morning to get the kids dressed while I finish getting the table and food platters ready.” “But I don’t want them to come!” Hadassa was annoyed. “I wanted this time to read my new book! We don’t even know them, what if we have nothing to talk about?!” Ima stopped tidying and turned around to look at Hadassa. “Hadassa, please slow

down and listen. How would you feel if you thought you’d be spending shabbos in Eretz Yisrael and then suddenly you found out you weren’t and you were also stranded without a place to sleep or food to eat?” Hadassa thought for a minute. “I don’t think I would enjoy that.” “Hashem has given us an amazing opportunity here,’’ Ima continued. “Here is a chance to do some real hachnosas orchim. Sure, it is a nice chessed to invite friends over, but they would still have food even if you didn’t invite them. The Brodingers literally have no other options. Aren’t we lucky to be able to do this mitzva in such a great way?” Hadassa thought about it a bit more as she got her siblings dressed in their shabbos best, ready for when Abba, Chaim and the Brondingers came home from shul. Avraham Avinu and Sarah Imeinu welcomed everyone into their tent as guests, no matter who they were. Surely she could learn from them and try to welcome the Brodingers into her home, to make them feel as comfortable as possible even though it was hard for her. An hour of busy preparation passed by quickly. Hadassa smiled to herself as she heard a knock on the front door. She hurriedly put the last piece of Lego away and stood up to check the lounge was completely tidy. Finally, she was ready and excited to give the Brodingers a warm welcome.

Lech Lecha

In a nutshell Lech Lecha is all about travels. It starts with our ancestor Avram, being told by Hashem to leave the place of his birth and head towards the land of Cana’an, where he would be a source of blessing. The influence at home is no good, and Avram must take Sarai and Lot and all the other people they have drawn near to Hashem and head to the holy land. Did they immediately find blessing there? No! There was a famine. Sometimes, one needs to wait to see how their good deeds bear fruit. Given that there was real hunger in Cana’an Avram is forced to head down to Egypt where he attempts to hide his beautiful wife from the prying eyes of Pharaoh’s customs officers, to no avail. Sarai is taken captive to Pharaoh, but G-d doesn’t allow this to succeed and plagues Pharaoh and the entire house. Needless to say, Pharaoh regrets his move and handsomely rewards Avram for taking his handsome wife and off they return to Israel.

Now that they were very rich, they needed somewhere to settle all their cattle. Lot cast his eyes over Sodom and Amorah and thought it to be a suitable place for his material interests. This was not the case for his spiritual interests though and one needs to consider carefully where one chooses to live and not place their money before their mind. There was a war between four kings on one side and five on the other and Avram was aware that Lot was caught in battle, so he heads off to save him and his country. The king of Sodom offers Avram more handsome benefits for his warrior services but Avram refuses. Not even a shoelace or a thread. We wouldn’t want the king of Sodom to become (more) arrogant thinking that he made Avram wealthy. It’s nice having lots of money and cattle, but having children means much more to people. What was it all worth if Avram had no heir – no

continuation of his legacy? Hashem tells him to go outside and see if he can count the stars – which he obviously could not. “Your offspring will be likewise too numerous to count!” says Hashem. Avram believes Hashem but is then foretold of the eventual exile of his descendants in a land that is not theirs (i.e. Egypt) but they too would leave with a lot of wealth. Much of what happened to our ancestors happened and happens to us too. Sarai had a maidservant, Hagar and gave her to Avram in marriage. When Hagar was expecting a child, Sarai was disapproving of Hagar’s haughty attitude. Hagar had to flee. An Angel tells Hagar that she would have a child that she should name Yishmael. Towards the end of the Parsha, G-d renames Avram to Avraham and Sarai to Sarah and assures them tha they will have a son.
