ISRAEL: A LIGHT UNTO THE NATIONS
BY TREATING PLO’S EREKAT WHO IS “CRITICAL” IN JERUSALEM HOSPITAL BY DAVID SAFFER Israel has shown itself to be a light unto the nations by treating critically ill Palestine Liberation Organisation secretary-general Saeb Erekat for Covid-19 in a Jerusalem hospital. Defence Minister Benny Gantz approved Erekat’s emergency transfer to an Israeli hospital. It is unclear how Israel’s humanitarian help will affect future peace negotiations.

Erekat, 62, is one of the most senior advisers to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and also served former PLO leader, Yasser Arafat. His admission to an Israeli hospital came despite the Palestinian leadership’s cutting ties with Israel this year over annexation plans and opposition to US President Donald Trump’s Mideast plan. When news of Erekat’s admission emerged, a number of Israeli MKs condemned the decision,
noting Israel should have demanded Hamas return civilian captives and soldiers’ bodies. Bezalel Smotrich of the Yamina Party reportedly said offering humanitarian assistance to Israel’s “enemy” without demanding the return of the Israelis from Gaza was “nether moral nor logical.” Smotrich added that Israel should have demanded the CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Israel issues stark warning to Iran Orthodox communities must
follow Covid guidelines
BY ADAM MOSES Israel will do whatever it takes to stop Iran acquiring deadly weapons. The move comes after a UN arms embargo against Iran ended in spite of US objections. “We must be stronger and more determined than ever in light of the expiration of the arms embargo on Iran,” Defence Minister Benny Gantz Gantz stated. “Iran has never been just an Israeli problem but first and foremost a regional and global problem.” He added, “As Defence Minister, I will continue to take whatever measures necessary, together with our partners, both old and new, to prevent Iranian expansion and armament. All countries should join this important effort.” The UN embargo hit Iran armament efforts under its nuclear deal with world powers. Whilst Iran’s economy has been severely impeded by US sanctions and has reportedly stated no intention to go on a military “buying spree”, it can. The Islamic Republic reportedly hailed the end of the embargo as a “momentous day” in defiance of the US regime’s effort. However, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rebuffed the embargo deadline. “The United States is prepared to use its domestic authorities to sanction any individual or entity that materially contributes to the supply, sale, or transfer of conventional arms to or from Iran, as well as those who

provide technical training, financial support and services, and other assistance related to these arms,” he said in a statement. “For the past 10 years, countries have refrained from selling weapons to Iran under various U.N. measures. Any country that now challenges this prohibition will be very clearly choosing to fuel conflict and tension over promoting peace and security.” Russia’s deputy UN Ambassador, Dmitry Polyansky, called on Pompeo not to provoke Iran. The next move is expected to come after the US presidential elections in November. President Donald Trump has voiced his disdain regarding Iran during his tenure on numerous occasions. Biden is reportedly willing to offer Iran “a credible path” to diplomacy” if they have “strict compliance” with the deal. Notwithstanding the US result, a global battle with Iran will continue.
Pray for Dayan Ehrentreu and Rabbi Sacks’ recovery The public has been asked to pray for the complete recovery of Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu and Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks following announcements about their health. Dayan Ehrentreu is undergoing treatment after suffering a stroke. The esteemed Dayan served as head of the London Beth Din for many years. He has particular expertise in Medical Ethics, Conversions and Kashrut. The Dayan’s name for prayers is Chanoch ben Blimele. Lord Sacks was recently diagnosed with cancer. Lord Sacks, who held the post of Chief Rabbi from 1991 to 2013, hopes to return to work soon. He has been treated for cancer twice before, in his 30s and 50s. A growing number of ultra-orthodox leaders around the world have called on Jewish communities to follow government and medical guidelines on social distancing, masking and abstention from large gatherings. The intervention from leaders in the UK, Israel, across Europe and America has come about following a backlash in the media and online regarding orthodox members defying safety measures. Some 52% of elderly coronavirus patients in Israel are ultra-Orthodox. Statistics elsewhere are extremely worrying. The tide though has begun to turn and was recently illustrated by Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America and Vaad Roshei Yeshiva of Torah Umesorah speaking out. “We are obligated to do everything possible to avoid even one occurrence of serious illness,” they noted in a stark statement. “It is critical that we protect and assure the ongoing function of our schools and shuls, our survival depends on it.”

Releasing the message due to “an indisputable rise” in sickness again, both organisations noted communities had been confronted by “alarming realities” although COVID-19 cases, serious illness and deaths experienced at the pandemic’s onset had not been seen in the latest spike. The bodies accepted that communities not complying to guidelines had led to a disproportionate rate of infection compared to the general population and a negative light across the country. Noting its education centres and synagogues had been thrust into “immediate jeopardy” there was a call for communal leaders to ensure compliance and good health practices. They implored, “People who have COVID-19 symptoms should stay home. The elderly and those with medical conditions must exercise special care.” Both organisations, which are under the auspices of Agudath Israel of America, called for those in high infection areas to be tested to prevent a further surge.

Israel-UAE accord brings economic dividends BY LEAH WAXLER Israel’s accord with the United Arab Emirates has begun to pay economic dividends. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Transportation Minister Miri Regev toured Haifa port where a container ship from the UAE was anchored on Monday. Netanyahu went on to tour Haifa’s coronavirus control centre at Rambam hospital. This was the second visit to Israel of a ship from Dubai anchored in Haifa. Containers were stacked with washing machines and electric devices. Netanyahu hailed the visit as a “historic day, genuinely historic”. “Everything that arrives here simply lowers the cost of living and every citizen of Israel will feel the impact of it,” he commented. “These are the fruits of peace that you, citizens of Israel, are now enjoying. Not later, not in the future, now, because this is a warm peace. This is peace for peace, economics for economics. We are joining the State of Israel to the maritime artery that brings to it cheaper merchandise and products at excellent quality. This is good for every citizen.” He added, “It is important to understand, once Israel was a cul-de-sac, meaning that you could come here from the

Blue and White MK Michal Cotler-Wunsh concurred, reportedly noting that Israel should offer medical support on condition of concessions from the Palestinians. Cotler-Wunsh called for the return of IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, killed and held by Hamas, and civilians Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed. Erekat tested positive earlier this month according to the PLO and had been in isolation at his home in Jericho since his diagnosis. With the veteran PLO negotiator’s condition deteriorating, Magen David Adom paramedics, escorted by IDF soldiers, reportedly transferred him from his West Bank residence to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Centre’s specialist intensive care unit. The PLO Negotiations Affairs Department confirmed Erekat’s condition required immediate medical attention due to “chronic health problems” in his respiratory system. His brother, Saber, reportedly told AFP news agency, “His situation is not good.” “Mr Erekat is receiving top-notch

professional care like all serious corona patients at Hadassah, and the staff will do everything to assist his recovery,” Prof Zeev Rothstein director, Hadassah Medical Centre, reportedly said on Sunday. “At Hadassah, we treat every patient as if he were our only patient.” Erekat was placed in a medically induced coma within 24 hours due to coronavirus complications and a bacterial infection. A hospital spokesperson told media outlets that Erekat was “critical, due to respiratory distress, anaesthetised and ventilated.” They added, “His care continues to be coordinated with lung transplant specialists in Israel and abroad to provide optimum care to this patient with complications of COVID-19 infection, on the background of a previous lung transplant.” Erekat underwent lung-transplant surgery in the United States in 2017. Erekat backs a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian Middle East conflict and has been vocal in his opposition to Israel’s West Bank annexation policy. One of Palestinians’ chief negotiators in peace talks with Israel for almost three decades, going back to the George H.W. Bush presidency in 1991, he helped negotiate the Oslo Accords with Israel.

leader to Rambam hospital. Speaking after the tour to the expanded department to deal with the coronavirus, he noted. “There are developments here that are ahead of the entire world in integrated treatment. Medical staff and military officers are utilising information communication and diagnostic systems with innovative technology to treat patients.
Netanyahu paid tribute to medical teams putting themselves on the front lines. “The achievements here are impressive,” he noted. “We have seen that the lockdown works quickly. We have already reached less than 1,000 (cases), with 3% infection. We used to have 8,000 (cases), with 15% infection. This is a rapid drop. “Unfortunately, we see, as I predicted, that European countries are quickly passing us, almost all of them. They are passing us because they did not impose this lockdown. However, we need to maintain the achievements of the lockdown in a gradual exit and by following the directives. I expect everyone to follow the directives, everyone, without exception.” He added, “There are ‘red cities’ that, as of now, according to last night’s data, are starting to exit. If I am not mistaken, two of the five ‘red cities’, are starting to exit. However, we are still not taking them off, this depends on following the directives. “I call on everyone in ‘red cities’, the ultra-orthodox public, follow the directives. We will enforce but it is no less important that you enforce yourselves. If we do this, then we will exit, and we will exit the second wave, which is now powerfully hitting the entire world, in a good manner. We can exit better than the other nations of the world, as happened with the first wave, if we do this together.”
CER participates in international peace meeting Rabbi Haim Korsia, Chief Rabbi of France and Conference of European Rabbis vice-president, participated in an international Prayer for Peace initiative in Rome yesterday. Rome’s Community of Saint Egidio organised the event titled “No One Is Saved Alone: Peace and Fraternity”. Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian denominations in the Basilica of Saint Mary in Aracoeli on Rome’s Capitoline Hill participated. President Sergio Mattarella and Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission President joined an interfaith ceremony in Michelangelo’s Square. Live-streamed in eight languages, a minute’s silence in memory of pandemic victims concluded the event. Chief Rabbi Korsia told the crowd, “In all the synagogues of the world, this Saturday we read the text of the creation of the world and the beginning of humanity. So much hope, we see fraternity as hope.” He added, “Our fraternity needs to be exercised in person, in debate and sometimes even in lively discussion, but always in the hope of finding the other, in order to be able to find ourselves.” Addressing the horrific beheading outside Paris last Friday of French secondary school teacher, Samuel Paty by a fundamentalist, Chief Rabbi Korsia “This man

Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, Conference of European Rabbis, president, commented, “Yesterday’s meeting brought together some of the world’s leading religious figures in one place, as a sign of unity and co-operation to end all conflicts with the power of prayer.” He added, “The Conference of European Rabbis was delighted to be part of such a momentous and spiritually powerful event.”

AIHA wins landmark supreme court case BY ADAM MOSES Agudas Israel Housing Association (AIHA) has won a landmark ruling in the Supreme Court to protect its policy of offering social housing to members of the orthodox Jewish community. AIHA in Stamford Hill lists rental homes with a caveat of consideration for the orthodox community. The court ruled that it was legal due to social and economic disadvantages faced by Charedi Jews in the area. AIHA argued the community suffers disadvantages when it comes to social housing. This includes discrimination on the basis of large families, housing requirements, levels of poverty, anti-Semitism
due to dress within the community and English not being a first language. Supreme Court justices unanimously confirmed orthodox Jews have specific requirements and AIHA’s housing allocation policy fell within exemptions of the Equality Act 2010. Ita Symons, AIHA chief executive, said, “Our focus has always been to ensure that we provide appropriate social housing to those members of the orthodox Jewish community who need it. “We began as a small group of motivated individuals who saw a local need within our community and built an organisation to fill that need.” She added, “We are proud that we have worked successfully alongside Hackney
Local Authority for so many years, and that hundreds of families have benefitted from our work. We have invested a huge amount into today’s judgement and it now proves, beyond any doubt, that our policies have been vindicated and protect members of our community.” This ruling upholds the rights of faithbased charities to prioritise members of their own faith. Mrs Symons noted, “If this case had gone the other way, it could have had serious ramifications for the entire faith charity sector. “Whilst it was never our intention to provide more than housing for our community, today’s judgement means that we will have a much wider impact and that our
work will enable other faith charities to continue to provide for their communities’ for the foreseeable future.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl welcomed news that the Supreme Court’s judgement ensured faith and culturally sensitive provision can be targeted at those who require it. Ms van der Zyl praised Mrs Symons for her commitment to win a significant victory. AIHA was set up to provide social housing primarily for the orthodox Jewish community. Due to the surplus demand for social housing from members, in practice all AIHA’s properties are allocated to orthodox community members.
Ben-Shabbat heads Israeli delegation to Bahrain BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel and Bahrain signed Memorandum of Understandings to establish diplomatic and friendly relations this week. The joint Israel-US delegation was led by National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and Foreign Ministry director general Alon Ushpiz. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House envoy to peace, Avi Berkowitz, joined the party. Ben-Shabbat and Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani signed the joint communique. Both nations vowed not to take hostile actions against one another and to act against hostile actions by other countries. The two nations signed separate Memorandum of Understandings covering various areas including finance and investments, trade and economy, tourism, aviation, communications, culture, science, technology and agriculture. Full cooperation will take place between the Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs. Visa exemptions for diplomats and cooperation between Chambers of Commerce were also on the agenda. Ben-Shabbat on his arrival at Manama airport reportedly said that Israel extended its hands for a “genuine peace with the Bahraini people”. Speaking in Arabic, he noted, “Together we will change the reality in the region for the benefit of our nations.” Switching to Hebrew, Ben-Shabbat noted his hope that a direct flight to Mamana would be a regular route in the future. Al-Zayani welcomed the Israeli delegation and called for a lasting peace that safeguarded the Middle East’s people. Bahrain has called for dialogue to resolve the

Neo-Nazi teen guilty of 14 terror charges BY DAVID SAFFER An A-star student radicalised into a neo-Nazi has pleaded guilty to 14 terror charges. Harry Vaughan, 18, is believed to have begun taking an interest in Satanic neo-Nazism when he was 14. His parents had no knowledge and were stunned when he was arrested in June 2019 following a counter-terrorism operation against far-right online forum Fascist Forge. The teen had “every advantage” afforded to him according to his barrister at a top grammar school where he gained four A-star grades. But in 2018, he applied to join white supremacist System Resistance Network, a successor to National Action, which the government banned as a terrorist organisation in 2016. Campaign Against Anti-Semitism were among a number of organisations backing the decision. Vaughan’s laptop revealed documents relating to anti-Semitism, Satanism and neo-Nazism. He also had a far-right terrorist book, bomb-making manuals and materials from the Sonnenkrieg Division, a neo-Nazi organisation banned by the Government this year. Police also discovered child abuse videos which led to charges. Vaughan pleaded guilty. The Head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command reportedly said the case illustrated it was possible
for any young person to be susceptible to radicalisation. Vaughan will be sentenced at the Old Bailey for his actions. Meantime, police are investigating a Nazi banner hanging from a window in a house in Stoke-On-Trent. The banner in Birches Head was publicised on social media. This is not the first time that a Nazi flag has appeared in the area. CAA publicised the disturbing incident earlier this week. In other news, CAA has criticised Sky HISTORY for allowing a contestant, Darren, on its woodcutting show, The Chop. The participant is covered in tattoos, including on his face a tattoo denoting “88”, a popular number in neo-Nazi numerology that denotes “Heil Hitler”. Other tattooed numbers include 23/16, denoting White Supremacy, 18 for Adolf Hitler, and 1488, another white supremacist figure. A CAA spokesperson said, “Sky HISTORY has made a terrible mistake by including in ‘The Chop’ an individual adorned with what appear to be neo-Nazi tattoos without providing serious evidence to show that the tattoos mean something other than how they appear. “These tattoos will be plainly visible to viewers on the show, including younger viewers, which is unacceptable. If Sky HISTORY is indeed ‘intolerant of racism’ as it claims, then it must urgently provide a credible clarification or remove the contestant from the programme.” In response to criticism, Sky HISTORY

commented, “Darren’s tattoos denote significant events in his life and have no political or ideological meaning whatsoever. Amongst the various numerical tattoos on his body is the year of his father’s death.” Sky HISTORY added that the production team carried out background checks on all woodworkers and Darren had no affiliations or links to racist groups, views or comments. “Sky HISTORY is intolerant of racism and all forms of hatred and any use of symbols or numbers is entirely incidental and not meant to cause harm or offence,” a spokesman added. Meantime, CAA has lambasted the BBC for refusing to disclose whether it acted against a journalist posting anti-Semitic material on Twitter. Nimesh Thaker, who resigned last week, was a BBC World News journalist for over 20 years. Thaker posted tweets describing
anti-Semitism accusations against former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and the party as “smears”. He also trolled public figures campaigning against anti-Semitism, retweeted anti-Semitic activists including Jackie Walker, and supported disgraced former Labour MPs Ken Livingstone and Chris Williamson. CAA noted on its website that by resigning, Thaker had escaped scrutiny. The BBC reportedly told CAA that the director of BBC News understood its interest and that of the wider Jewish community, but were unable to comment on employment matters. “Please be assured that the BBC takes allegations such as this very seriously,” they added. The response did not acknowledge CAA fights anti-Semitism and had brought the matter to light. A CAA spokesperson said that the BBC’s refusal to disclose whether it took any action against Thaker was unacceptable. “While there are reports that he has resigned from the Corporation, even if true this does not signal whether the BBC itself has taken this matter seriously at all,” they explained. “Mr Thaker’s former colleagues, the Jewish community and licence fee payers all deserve to know how the BBC treats anti-Semitism, and whether it acts with the same gusto against expressions of anti-Jewish hatred as it does other forms of racism.” When CAA submitted a complaint about Thaker a few weeks ago, the BBC confirmed an investigation was underway. CAA called on the BBC to act swiftly and transparently against Thaker for “blatant breaches of the Corporation’s social media policy” including posting comments online, using an account in his own name and as an anonymous account. A CAA spokesman commented, “This should be a moment of reflection for the BBC, whose relations with the Jewish community have been strained for many years. “If licence fee payers are to have confidence in the broadcaster, it must show zero tolerance for antisemitism by its employees, on screen and off.” CAA approached Thaker for a comment.

Prayers for Israeli Rabbonim
BY LEAH WAXLER
Prayers are being said for esteemed Rabbonim in Israel due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rosh Yeshiva of Brisk HaGaon Rabbi Meshulam Dovid Halevi Soloveitchik is being treated at home in Gush Shemonim in Jerusalem. The name for prayers is HaRav Meshulam Dovid ben Alta Hendel. HaRav Aharon Chadash, Mashgiach of Yeshivas Mir in Jerusalem, has been receiving treatment at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital since Monday. The name for prayers is HaRav Aharon Dovid ben Tzivya. Sadly, Rabbi Moshe Rochberger, a wellknown Rabbi in Haifa, passed away at Shaare Zedek last Sunday. Rabbi Rochberger, 83, was a pupil of Maran Hagaon Rabbi Elyashiv. After studies at a Hebron yeshiva, he was one of the youngest community rabbis in Israel at Bat Galim, aged 26. Two decades later he served Ramat Hadar.
Israel Defence Forces has discovered a terror tunnel in the Gaza Strip. The tunnel runs from Khan Younis in southern Gaza to Kibbutz Kissufim in the Negev. The IDF sealed off roads and set up checkpoints to conduct an “engineering operation” on Monday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will act “resolutely on all fronts” for the security of Israel and against attempts to harm its sovereignty or citizens. IDF engineering forces operating in the area of the fence located the tunnel through its underground barrier system on the Gaza Strip border which construction is nearly complete an IDF statement noted. A spokesman added, “The terrorist organisation Hamas charge in and out of the
Gaza Strip and will bear the consequences of terrorist acts against Israeli citizens.” The tunnel, reportedly, was dug recently and did not pose a threat to Israeli communities. The IDF is expected to complete its investigation this week before sealing it up. “We have yet to affiliate this tunnel with any organisation, but to us, Hamas is responsible for everything that happens in the Gaza Strip,” IDF spokesman Brigadier General Hidai Zilberman reportedly noted. Zilberman added, “We have seen that in recent years, tunnelling has taken centre stage among terrorist organisations. In this tunnel specifically, they have invested a lot of money instead of directing it to the welfare of the residents of the Gaza Strip.” Zilberman noted there was no link to the IDF’s not striking back to a rocket fired from Gaza into Israel last Friday.

Ashkenazi warning as state budget impasse persists BY ADAM MOSES A political impasse remains over Israel’s state budget. Politicians have been arguing for months and failure to reach an agreement could trigger New Year elections. The issue is proving frustrating for MKs as the country battles the coronavirus pandemic. Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi gave a clear warning that the Blue & White Party would not hesitate in ending the coalition government. “This government is bogged down in infighting and quarrelling,” he reportedly noted. “Blue & White joined this government to save the public from a crisis. It is just not working. If this does not change it’s over.” Ashkenazi added, “A budget could be passed at any moment, it is merely a matter of will. Without an emergency economic plan, this will not happen.” Israel’s economy will shrink in 2020 for the first time in two decades and is running on a 2019 version although MKs backed NIS 100 billion in state aid due to Covid-19. Finance Minister Israel Katz blasted Ashkenazi, accusing Blue & White of “extorting” the government. “We need to straighten up and approve a budget for 2020 immediately,” he
Good news for victims of Nazi oppression The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) welcomes the increases in support and financial assistance for Holocaust survivors and victims of Nazi oppression announced by The Claims Conference following their annual negotiations with the German government. Of particular note is the decision to make refugees from Nazi oppression, along with survivors, eligible for an increase in hours of Homecare from 2021. Michael Newman, Chief Executive of the AJR, said. “The significant increase in Homecare support for the refugees, who fled before the outbreak of the Second World War, is a levelling up for which the AJR has strongly advocated. We congratulate the Claims Conference on the outcome of these negotiations and thank the German government for their continued support, which enables us to further assist our members and help them live in their own homes for as long as possible.” The Claims Conference announced, “The maximum number of homecare hours that can be received by a Jewish Nazi victim who is determined to be 2nd circle – that is, flight cases and some others – will increase from level 4 (56 hours/week) to level 5 (105 hours/ week).” Michael Newman added, “Obviously, we will need to continue to spend within our budget, but this is a significant boost and noteworthy achievement.”

reportedly said. Blue & White want one vote for 2020 and 2021 budgets but Likud favour two separate votes. Media reports cite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Likud preferring a December vote for the 2020 budget and March vote for 2021. If they are not passed, elections follow. Conditions for Blue & White leader
Benny Gantz becoming Prime Minister in the coalition deal appear to be behind the political chicanery. Ashkenazi has lambasted Netanyahu and said politically motivated decisions have hit public opinion. “There is no legislation, no ministerial committee, no economic plan. If we want this to succeed, Netanyahu must make a 180-degree turn. There no point in things
continuing as they are,” he reportedly noted. Ashkenazi is confident a budget could be passed if the will was present. “We can pass this through by the end of the month, and even ignore any specific partisan modifications to it to deal with them later,” he reportedly said. “You just have to want to do it, nobody thinks that this economic crisis should go on without a state budget to help against it. Treasury officials, the head of the Bank of Israel and financial experts all agree with this. This is just a political issue,” Ashkenazi added. “Somebody (referring to Netanyahu) is trying to keep all of his options open and not fulfil his agreements and this cannot be allowed to continue. This is irresponsible, the public must be given answers.” Ashkenazi dismissed Netanyahu’s assertion that Blue & White was acting as “a government within a government” and lamented that there was no director-generals, chief of police or state prosecutor. “We are not preventing the budget, the legislation or the official appointments,” he said. “We want all of these things to happen. None of this is going through because Netanyahu prevents it. The public has had enough of this infighting. They deserve answers,” Ashkenazi added.
Address anti-Semitic behaviour in football says AAD Action Against Discrimination has registered its disappointment at the lack of reference to anti-Semitic abuse in English football in the current anti-racism in football campaign. This applies to relevant football authorities, football clubs, the media and elsewhere, including initiatives adopted by various anti-racism organisations. AAD Chairman Jonathan Metliss said, “We have seen and absorbed all the recent publicity and activity in relation to combatting racism in UK football, together with the emergence of spokesmen
and role models such as Micah Richards and prior to him, Raheem Sterling. Much good work is clearly being done which we applaud but, unless we are mistaken, we do note a complete absence of any mention of anti-Semitism in UK football in the media and elsewhere, including any criticism of the use of the “Y” word, “Yid” or “Yiddo”, in particular by Tottenham fans, or the disgusting anti-Semitic responses to the chanting and use of these words and expressions. We understand that Spurs are currently looking into this issue internally.”
Metliss has spoken with Kick It Out chairman Sanjay Bhandari and encouraged that anti-Semitism in UK football is ‘high on their agenda’ however would be more reassured if anti-Semitism was included in the anti-racism ‘rhetoric’ in the media. He noted, “We trust and sincerely hope that anti-Semitic behaviour will be seriously addressed and remain high on the anti-racism in football agenda on a par with other forms of racism and discrimination.” AAD is the leading light in fighting anti-Semitic abuse in English football.
Ministry of Tourism brings Kotel online Israel’s Ministry of Tourism has launched a special initiative for international travellers unable to visit the country. The Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City is an iconic, traditional place to see. To that end, people have been able to write a prayer or wish on an e-note through a website. Notes would then be printed and placed in the wall. The Ministry initiative ran from Monday to Wednesday and has made the sacred site accessible to all. “While Israel is still
closed to international travel, we wanted to create a meaningful way in which people can be inspired and connect with the spiritual sites that are abundant in our country,” noted Sharon Bershadsky, Director of the Israel Tourist Office London. “The Western Wall is an important piece of Jewish

tradition and under normal circumstances, would attract thousands of travellers from all faiths and none. With travel currently restricted, we want to make this unique Israeli experience accessible to people from the comfort and safety of their homes.” Details: www.goisrael. com

THE ISRAEL PROPERTY BUYERS GUIDE Welcome to the CurrencyTransfer.com guide to buying a property in Israel. We passionately think that buying a home in Israel is exciting, fulfilling, and perhaps Zionistic adventure. We’re here to help. The Legal Angle
The Mortgage
There are many nuggets in this category, as legal representation for property purchase is absolutely key in Israel. There is no “standard” transaction and having someone experienced in your corner batting for your interests is extremely valuable. The local market is culturally, and structurally unique, and we find that time and again foreign clients need to adjust their mindset and expectations to optimize their acquisition in Israel. Having the right legal advice is the best catalyst for a successful acquisition.
The most common mistake foreign clients usually make is to compare the real estate and mortgage industry between their home country and Israel. There are similarities but also huge differences. For example, a mortgage refusal in Israel is usually not considered as a reason to cancel a real estate deal.
The Basics: Counting Rooms Understanding Exchange Rates The three major types of transactions: Unfortunately there have been cases where clients have flown in to see a pre-prepared list of properties, only to discover that in Israel the living room is also counted as a room, and hence what they thought were a list of 4 bedroom properties, was actually a list of 3 bedroom (plus living room) properties. Also, “finished to a very high level” often means something different in Israel than in New York, London or Amsterdam. The standards and norms of where the customer is coming from will play a huge part in preparing a list of suitable properties.

LOW – 4.1809
£500,000 2,090,450
HIGH – 4.4134
£500,000 2,206,700
Think about this for a moment. A mere 4% shift in the currency exchange rates on a £500,000 property can at best, make the difference in the choice of furniture, and at worst, mean your dream home is no longer within budget. From key macro-driven interest rate decisions to political earthquakes like Donald Trump and Brexit, keeping abreast of market movements is essential. We help you navigate and budget every step of the way and ensure that the market fluctuations don’t get in the way of a once in a lifetime adventure. Locking in a rate today can give you peace of mind when purchasing your dream home in Israel. Take the example of the Morris family who is buying a house in Netanya and are required to make their final balance transfer in a month and a half. The current GBPILS exchange rate is attractive, within budget and the family decides they are eager to guarantee the Sterling cost of their property abroad. Non-Bank Foreign Exchange specialists will allow you to fix the GBP to ILS exchange rate now, giving you the comfort of knowing the exact cost of your property, regardless of what happens with fluctuations in the exchange rate. Forward contracts are the perfect method of budgeting and staying in control.
1. An existing property The agreement will be with the current owner. The terms of payment are to be negotiated. A common transaction would be one where there are 3 – 4 equal payments from signature to completion.
2. New property under construction The agreement will be with the developer. Payments terms will be spread over the construction phase. The down payment could be up to 25% with 10% left for hand over and the balance of 65% payable in equal quarterly payments throughout the process of construction.
3. Rights to erect a new property in a “Purchasers’ Group” Namely a number of parties who cooperate together to buy and develop a property, and then contracting themselves, as a group, with third parties to construct the development. The group will usually pay for the purchase of the land upfront, construction costs will be paid over the building phase in accordance with terms agreed by the group members in a cooperation agreement between them.
A range of currency options First and foremost recognize that the mortgage options are larger and more complex in Israel than in the rest of the world. Foreign buyers are able to take advantage of a range of mortgages in different currencies, including Israeli Shekel, Euro, US Dollar, and British Pound.
Mortgage provider options Prices between different lending banks very much depend on the clientele they target. It will usually vary according to the client profile and lender’s risk appetite. Be aware interest rates are currently higher in Israel than in Europe or North America for different reasons such as the cost of funds to the banks, the level of competition in the mortgage market and finally the disequilibrium between supply and demand of real estate and mortgages.
Factor In Total Costs Be aware of the additional expenses for a real estate purchase, including amongst others: Legal fees, Bank Arrangement Fees, Surveyor, Title registration, Purchase Taxes, Estate Agent, etc. Depending on your status, a good rule of thumb is to expect additional unanticipated costs of 10-15% of the purchase price. To conclude, never stretch yourself to the limit based on the purchase price alone, given all the additional payments that need to be made.

Israel slowly lifts lockdown measures BY DAVID SAFFER Israel has begun to lift measures following a month-long nationwide lockdown. Coronavirus czar Prof. Roni Gamzu told the specially formed cabinet yesterday that school pupils in grades one to four could return in small “capsules”. Health Ministry data reported serious cases dropping below 600 with 1,165 people positive tests. There are 229 ventilated patients with 2,278 fatalities. The 10 worst hit areas were Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Ashdod, Modi’in Illit, Petah Tikva, Netanya, Beit Shemesh, Beer Sheva and Holon. Ultra-orthodox communities pro rata remain the hardest hit. The past two weeks has seen 55 Chareidi patients pass away, 11% of Israeli fatalities, including 33 in Bnei Brak and 18 in Jerusalem. Among critically ill patients are 57 Chareidim, 20 under the age of 65. Chareidi communities total 10% of Israel’s population, worryingly 20% of critically ill patients are Chareidi. In related news, every Israeli citizen can have a coronavirus test without consulting a doctor. To date, only citizens in “red zones” had this facility. “Health maintenance organisations

(HMOs) are ready and will execute this in the coming days,” Gamzu reportedly said. “Everything will be open and available, and test results will also be available within hours. “I want the entire state of Israel to have less than 5% positive test results, therefore we need more testing.” Gamzu added, “I want each person to
get tested, especially people who have the slightest suspicion of being asymptomatic patients. In my opinion, as many people as possible should get tested, there are enough test kits. I do not fear labs would collapse under the pressure. The HMOs are working and know the exact workload expected on the laboratories. There may
be some hiccoughs here and there, but it’s a price I’m willing to pay.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the latest lockdown a success. “We were at 9,000 infected per day, and dropped below 1,000. We were at 19.5% positive per day, and now we are at 3.5%,” he reportedly said. “I do not want to say that there are no problems. There are problems. We must come out in a gradual and responsible manner.” He added, “The ultra-Orthodox public adheres to the guidelines, but there are those who do not. We will increase enforcement, tighten the closures and take necessary steps.” Gamzu noted earlier this week that Israel had no major “red” hot spot areas that needed closing. Restrictions were lifted in ultra-Orthodox towns Rekhasim, Modi’in Illit and Beitar Illit alongside Kiryat Mattersdorf in Jerusalem. All had previously been in the highest category. Meantime, Netanyahu and opposition leader Yair Lapid had a heated exchange in the Knesset over Israel’s coronavirus response on Monday. Lapid’s Yesh Atid-Telem faction called for the discussion ‘The Prime Minister’s disgraceful failure to manage the economic and health crises’.
Bibi hails first UAE delegation to Israel BY DAVID SAFFER Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hailed the first official United Arab Emirates delegation to Israel as a “glorious day of peace” on Tuesday. Netanyahu was joined by Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, Finance Minister Israel Katz and National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat at the landmark ceremony at Ben-Gurion Airport. The Emirati delegation included Minister of State for Financial Affairs Obaid Humaid Al Tayer and Economy Minister Abdullah bin Touq al-Mari. “Welcome to Israel,” Netanyahu reportedly said in his speech on the airport tarmac due to coronavirus restrictions. “Today we are making history in a way that will stand for generations. We are working together to change the Middle East for the better. We are all sons of Abraham.” He added, “The visit of such a high-level delegation from the UAE will show our peoples, the region and the entire world the benefit of having friendly, peaceful and normal exchanges.” US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Al Tayer also gave addresses. Mnuchin and Middle East envoy Ari Berkowitz accompanied UAE flight EY8014 from Abu Dhabi after joining the Israeli delegation to Bahrain on Sunday. “This is a historical moment for the UAE
country and Israel and we are looking forward to peace in the region,” a pilot noted in the background of a video posted by Berkowitz on Twitter. A trilateral meeting took place between the US delegation, UAE officials and Israeli officials. US International Development Finance Corporation CEO, Adam Boehler, launched a $3 billion trilateral project. The ‘Abraham Fund’ will be based in Jerusalem to strengthen economic resilience in the Middle East and North Africa. The first direct Israel-UAE bilateral meeting then took place where commercial deals were signed on aviation, investment, science and technology. The first visa exemption agreement with an Arab state was also signed. The Knesset will approve the deals at a later date. UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan called on Israel to open an Emirati Embassy and an Israeli Embassy in Abu Dhabi as soon as possible in a letter to Ashkenazi. “Best wishes to both countries and the two peoples who are friends for progress and
prosperity in the future,” he commented. The UAE delegation returned to Abu Dhabi with Israeli businessmen, tourism executives and journalists following the ceremony and meetings. Wasel Abu Youssef, Palestine Liberation Organisation, described the UAE visit to Israel as “shameful.” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the visit would encourage Israel to pursue annexation of West Bank lands. In related news, an Etihad commercial flight with 58 passengers landed at Ben Gurion for the first time earlier this week. “We are very excited to be here,” Captain Saleh Abdullah reportedly said. “Hopefully this is the beginning of a good relationship between UAE and Israel and if someone asked me a few months ago if I would be here making a speech in Tel Aviv, I would have said this is impossible.” Etihad marked the flight by launching a dedicated Hebrew website, a first for an Arab airline. Also available in English, the site includes an Abu Dhabi destination guide. His Excellency Mohamed Mubarak Fadhel Al Mazrouei, chairman, Etihad

Aviation Group, reportedly said, “Today’s flight is a historic opportunity for the development of strong partnerships here in the UAE, and in Israel, and Etihad as the national airline, is delighted to be leading the way. We are just starting to explore the long-term potential of these newly forged relationships, which will be sure to greatly benefit the economies of both nations, particularly in the areas of trade and tourism, and ultimately the people who call this diverse and wonderful region home.” This week’s developments follows Israel and the UAE establishing diplomatic ties and signing of the Abraham Accords in Washington last month. It also follows El Al’s first commercial flight to Abu Dhabi. In the build-up to the ceremony, the Transportation Ministry noted on Sunday that an aviation deal would include 28 weekly commercial flights between Ben Gurion, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The agreement allows charter flights to Ramon Airport in Eilat and weekly cargo flights. Netanyahu will sign the deal within weeks, the ministry confirmed. “This is a historic and exciting day for Israel, which is starting to experience the economic bloom with new markets and flight destinations,” Transportation Minister Miri Regev said in a statement.
22 OCTOBER 2020 Netanyahu slammed Lapid for wasting “precious time” in the ongoing battle with the deadly virus. “This is the second time during the second wave alone that the opposition is making me come to a political discussion and bump heads at the expense of precious time we all need to fight coronavirus,” Netanyahu reportedly said. “I respect the democratic process and Knesset, but in times of emergency, everyone, and that includes the opposition, must shoulder the burden. In most countries around the world, the opposition is helping the government, and unfortunately that is not the case in Israel.” He added, “All you hear from the opposition and the media is two vocal choirs, one saying that everything is fine, and the other is all doom and gloom. They first said it was all okay, there is no pandemic, there is no coronavirus and even if it exists, it’s not all that serious. At the same time, they yelled that all is lost. Everything is falling apart, and all hope is lost, continue your fine-bummer choir while my colleagues and I will continue working to save lives and promote quick testing that will help in the life alongside coronavirus.” Lapid bemoaned Netanyahu for being out of touch with everyday life in Israel. “The Prime Minister said on every possible stage that the situation is simply excellent,” he reportedly explained. “According to him, Israel is going through the coronavirus crisis exceptionally, and his treatment of it is even more exceptional. The citizen’s health is excellent. Their

There’s such a thing as facts, statistics, doctors, scientists, Bank of Israel data, Finance Ministry data, there’s a reality. In reality, every fifth business in Israel is closed. Every fourth young person is overdraft. Real life is very hard on real people. In reality, Israel is the only country in the world that has gone to a second full lockdown. You said on television, without blinking, that other countries went into full lockdown, no such countries were found. Not on Earth, anyway. It’s all politics to you.”
“When the contagion rate goes down, the desire and need (for testing) goes down with it. It is a constant state of war,” Gamzu added. “The coronavirus is defeated by finding asymptomatic virus carriers, they are the ones still spreading the disease.” Gamzu noted that young people were more likely to be asymptomatic and not requiring emergency treatment but did pass the disease to older people, which could prove fatal. Regarding the reopening of schools, Gamzu called for the process in a logical manner. But he warned that kindergartens in “red” hot spots were mainly ul-
“I do not want to say that there are no problems. There are problems. We must come out in a gradual and responsible manner.” Gamzu, meanwhile, informed MKs that asymptomatic patients were crucial to stopping the pandemic. “During the second lockdown, with an exhausted populace, we managed to bring down the R number to 0.6,” he reportedly told the Knesset Labour, Welfare and Health Committee. “This is a great success. If I could, I would have tested every single Israeli, found every asymptomatic virus carrier and stopped this pandemic.”
tra-Orthodox so a risk. Reopening classes for older students was also an issue and illegal. Health Minister Yuli Edelstein warned schools that reopening against government orders would be “heavily fined” and licenses may be removed. Edelestein’s comments came after hundreds of ultra-Orthodox seminaries and institutions for all age groups reportedly reopened on Sunday. “There is no permission to open any

This should be clear to everyone.” Edelstein made it clear that if kindergartens and preschools led to another hike, the government would not hesitate to act. “The lockdown and closure of certain institutions are not a punishment, but a medical treatment for the benefit of all citizens,” he reportedly said. “If we are careful and adhere to the basic rules, such as masks and social distance, we can enter the winter period with reasonable infection rates. “I assure the citizens of Israel that there will be no compromises on the issue of maintaining public health.” Aside from reopening kindergartens and nurseries, some businesses reopened but not for customers. Take away services, nature reserves, national parks and beaches could also reopen. Citizens could travel over 1km from home and visit homes to a maximum of 20 people outdoors and 10 indoors. Prominent sites in Jerusalem including the Western Wall, Temple Mount and Church of the Holy Sepulchre could also reopen for worship under restrictions.

Work Avenue creates a laptop library to help Jewish jobseekers The National Lottery Coronavirus Community Support Fund has awarded Work Avenue a grant of just over £8,000 to create a laptop library as part of the Work Avenue Digital Skills Programme. As the Jewish community’s leading employment and business support organisation, Work Avenue is responding to a need after noticing some of the jobseekers they help are unable to access their virtual support services, training programmes, and employment opportunities due to a lack of access to a computer. The grant enables Work Avenue to purchase and loan out 15 laptops to its job-seeking community to use for online training workshops and seminars, Zoom advice sessions with their team of employment and business advisers, help with CV creation and job searches. Additionally, digital skills programmes are available to support people, whatever their ability and experience, to improve their technology skills for use in today’s work environment. Work Avenue CEO Debbie Sheldon said: “Our community asked for this project and we are delighted to be launching it shortly. So many of our jobseekers told our team of employment advisers that they find it difficult to upskill or find
work because they don’t have access to a computer. “This became particularly evident during lockdown. In some instances, families had one phone, which was being used as a computer by their children to access school classes, leaving the adults little usage. “Providing a laptop library to our clients will be transformative, especially for people who are vulnerable, such as those who are shielding, suffer from poor mental health, or those with specific learning difficulties. These laptops are a crucial resource that will help to bridge the digital divide and open up new training and employment opportunities. “While the idea for this project was born during lockdown, its lifetime and impact will exceed these immediately challenging times.” Demand for Work Avenue’s services has intensified in 2020, particularly from those needing extra support due to redundancy. This project is due to launch in the next few weeks. To find out more about how Work Avenue helps those searching for work, wanting to change career or looking to start/grow a business, please visit www.theworkavenue.org.uk

Singers Hill opens again Jewish young professionals During the war the late famous Rev Dr Abraham Cohen declared that Singers Hill the Midlands oldest and largest Shul would remain open every Shabbos unless it was bombed. Yet in March like all other Shul’s in this country it closed for the first time. This beautiful grade II* listed building situated near Birmingham’s city Center remains the hub of Jewish life in West Midlands also owning and maintaining the two Jewish cemeteries and Birmingham King David School. Despite resuming daily services in July the Shul was not used until Yomim Noraim as all services took place in the hall till then. Chazan Yossi Saunders joined the shul over Yom Kippur and sung together with the choir, assisting Rabbi Yossi Jacobs who together with his Rebbetzen just celebrated their 15th anniversary with the Shul erev Rosh Hashana with 250 joining for Lechaim on Zoom. Speeches and thanks were given by shul treasurer Gerald Bloom who was

Rapid Maintenance Solutions boss Shmili Halpern got a shock last week when half his van was stolen! He told The Jewish Weekly that the mancunian thieves simply took bits that they wanted and left the rest for the stunned owner. Police are investigating the matter.
Last week Jewish Care, Jami, Norwood, UJIA and GIFT hosted their first ever cross-communal event, which saw over 200 sign-ups for a virtual masterclass led by Chef Yossi Elad, founder of the popular Israeli eatery, the Palomar, raising over £11,000 of much needed funds. After a tough year of forced separation, and as we celebrated the Jewish New Year, hitting refresh on all that has been this past year, 5 young professional committees, led by For Starters’ founder, Lauren Fried, joined up to bring Jewish people together and to raise money for a variety of important causes. Having led a successful charity event for the South African Jewish community, Lauren believed there was no better time to bring the young professionals of the UK together. When planning began in summer, lockdown limitations were continuing to change and the decision was made to create a virtual cooking class. Gabi Mendelsohn (Young Jami); Shelley Cukier (Young UJIA); Daniel Lehman (Young Jewish Care); James Goodman (Young Norwood) and Rael Chapman (Young GIFT), representing their respective young committees, united for the first time to raise funds for their organisations, with match funding going towards feeding the vulnerable in our community through GIFT in the UK
and Leket in Israel. Chef Yossi, live from his kitchen in Jaffa, said he was “delighted to welcome people into my home”, and wished the audience of all ages multiple “Lechaims”, as he guided them through his bespoke recipe to create a honey cake with a difference. Rabbi Sands Milun, MD of GIFT thanked everyone for taking part in “a beautiful collaboration between a number of wonderful organisations, driven forward and executed by young professionals”, and explained how beneficial the money raised from this event would be, given the rising demands from within our community. Lauren noted that “it was wonderful to see the organisations signing up to a cross-communal event and truly inspiring to work with the leaders of their young divisions - the future of our community is in good hands!” Speaking for all involved, she added “We hope this is the first of many collaborations, and look forward to hosting more events like this one in future.” Shelley commented “Having taken on the role of co-Chair of Y-UJIA over the summer, there was a worry around how we could engage people within a pandemic. This event proved the power of young professionals no matter the circumstances and showed the drive they have to raise funds for vital causes they believe in.”
Jewish Legacy welcomes Axiom Stone Axiom Stone Solicitors has been appointed to the Approved Panel of solicitors for Jewish Legacy, the umbrella organisation for more than 40 Jewish charities. “Having personally been very active in the Jewish charity world for many years, I am delighted with this appointment which gives Axiom Stone the opportunity to make its mark in the Jewish charitable world.” said Jonathan Metliss, Axiom Stone’s Chairman. Meanwhile Vassos Vassou, Head of Axiom Stone’s Private Client department, added

As it comments itself, the firm prides itself as ‘a racially-diverse practice and this is yet another example of this policy.’

Jewish Futures launches ‘Our Story’ – a cutting-edge space for immersive and meaningful Jewish engagement
The proposed Our Story building in Hendon
Our Story will be a cutting-edge space in the heart of NW London that will enable young people to experience Jewish life, practices, culture and community in an immersive and relevant way. Outlining the vision behind the project, Rabbi Naftali Schiff (Founder and Chief Executive of Jewish Futures) explained, “Over the last twenty years, the demand for immersive Jewish experiences has grown exponentially. This has informed the work of all the organisations in the Jewish Futures family. “Our team is passionate about offering diverse and experiential pathways for young people to experience the joy of being Jewish. This ranges from life-changing volunteering opportunities provided by GIFT; Aish UK’s array of education and social programmes; Chazak’s work to enrich and inspire Sephardic communities; Ta’am engaging young Jews with the richness of their heritage through Jewish food and cooking; and JRoots running powerful educational journeys to educate thousands of young people about the Holocaust. “The Our Story project will bring all this work together, meeting the essential need for a state-of-the-art space for young people to explore Jewish life and identity. As well as a place to chill out and socialise, we want to foster a modern and lively space that will be an inspiration for anyone who enters!” The Our Story space will be a vibrant hub to inspire a new generation of engaged and intellectually curious young Jews. As well as being the home to all Jewish Futures member organisations, Our Story will serve as a resource for organisations from across the communal spectrum. “Through collaborative and creative partnerships, Our Story will offer powerful ways for young people to engage with what it means to be Jewish today. It will
be a touchstone in the heart of the community that will captivate and engage individuals, schools and groups from all different religious and cultural background in a welcoming inclusive and non-judgmental fashion”, Rabbi Schiff added. Early plans for the Our Story venue include multi-pathway spaces, open for the use of Jewish Futures organisations and other educational organisations, including interactive workshop and learning spaces bringing key aspects of Jewish history and culture to life for younger audiences. A dynamic communal space catering to the ever growing and changing needs of the community, including a dedicated space for pre-simcha planning and preparation. Office and co-working facilities – including WeWork-style facilities open to young businesspeople and start-up businesses. Interactive and engaging learning will be a key feature of the Our Story project. Rabbi Daniel Rowe, Executive Director of Jewish Futures’ member organisation Aish UK highlighted the importance of a venue dedicated to immersive Jewish experiences. “Young people today don’t just want to learn about Judaism, they want to be able to experience what Jewish life really entails. That is why Our Story will be a hub for interactive learning, which goes beyond classes and lectures, and allows young people to gain a deeper understanding of Judaism as a way of life, not just a set of concepts”. Ilana Epstein, Founder of Ta’am and Rebbetzin of Cockfosters & N. Southgate United Synagogue added, “Our Story will bring Judaism to life, for young Jews as well as young people interested in learning more about our community. It will not be a museum of Jewish life, but a living and breathing venue for learning and exploration”.

Camp Simcha family fun
Camp Simcha’s Paradise Wildlife Park Trip
Seriously ill children supported by Camp Simcha enjoyed individual family outings with trips to Paradise Wildlife Park, Blackpool Zoo, farms and quad-biking. While the charity could not arrange the usual group activities it runs at this time of year, the family day-trips, run within Government guidelines and with everything catered for and organised by Camp Simcha, offered a Covid-safe alternative. “Life is very difficult and isolating for families we support at the moment,” says Camp Simcha Head of Services Daniel Gillis. “The individual outings have been a huge boost and a chance for families to spend happy, carefree time together, making joyful memories despite all they go through in their day
to day.” Camp Simcha parent Rivka Stern from Manchester, whose son Ari, four, has a serious heart condition, spent a day out at Smithills Open Farm with the family. “Ari’s condition impacts his immunity levels, so Covid-19 has been very worrying and we have all had to be extra careful,” explained Rivka. “The children didn’t go back to school in the summer when their friends did, and we have not been on a day out since March. When restrictions lifted, we all carried on shielding. “To spend a day together having fun as a family, with everything organised for us in an environment which felt safe, was amazing. The children were so excited – especially because we were all out together.”

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON I start this week off with a European flavour. Orthodox readers know and understand totally about the halachic restrictions on men shaking hands with women, at least that’s how it works in many communities. A German Court ruled that a Muslim doctor was correctly denied citizenship, because he refused to shake hands with the woman presenting him with the certificate during the ceremony. Aargh! Talk about ‘so near, yet so far!’ When one digs a bit deeper, we realise that the individual had been living in Germany since 2002, firstly as a language student before Jacqueline Curzon then qualifying as a doctor, and working his way up to a position of PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY consultant. Commendable. However this young man, a professional of the highest order, with a deep religious conviction, and additionally an impeccable record regarding his integration, has now seen his citizenship attempt flattened by his non-compliance over a handshake. Judges at Baden-Wurttemberg explained the applicant would have should call 999 if their parents smack to demonstrate ‘living according to the values set in the German constitution,’ them. I can just imagine the emergency switchboard jammed up, whilst diswhich enshrines equality, and added that gruntled little Johnny and Jenny ring in a ‘handshake holds special importance’ to complain that ‘their dad gave them a because of its formal use in business. I ‘skelp’ for their cheek.’ Now I will reserve personally feel sorry for this chap, who further comment on this but must share has now taken his dispute to the federal with you a wee story. There was a very interesting article on cancer this week, and you will sense shortly I’m having a bit of a moment. You’d be right! Beth Purvis (41) had been diagnosed with S3 bowel cancer back in September 2016, and - by the following year - was deemed as S4 [metastatic], after it had spread to her lungs. Now what particularly caught my attention was that mets to the lung or liver are a precursor of the cheery goodbye which we cancer patients dread, in terms of receiving any curative treatment, but Ms Purvis had better luck than most. Not only did she receive two operations on her lungs plus chemo in 2019 to deal with the mets, she managed to be awarded the all clear in January, although her primary tumour was likely still there. She had a further lesion appear on her lung, and a 3rd surgery was planned for this March, but cancelled because of covid. By May, her cancer had spread to her brain and she is now deemed incurable. I can’t imagine the mental agony this must now cause, but I think back on Lucy, who never got surgery, because of shocking misdiagnosis and, as curative treatments essentially end up ‘about the mets,’ I have a personal gripe. My oncologist has always stated that they ‘can’t operate or remove lesions on the lungs because a) the lung is a moving organ and b) often the lesions are small and very difficult to excise. Perhaps this lady was under a different health authority, but hey-ho, they are all supposed to be following standardised national guidelines. If I’d had the little lesions removed from my lung when they had first been spotted {2 years ago}, I’m convinced I wouldn’t have found myself in a situation where they had the chance to grow like giant marrows on the allotment {okay, okay, I’m being over graphic}, with doctors then arguing almost a year later, that they had been ‘metastatic’ all along. And SO WHAT if they were, because at least those nasty little blighters would be gone, and less likely to fire up like a Roman Candle on bonfire night. For the price of the lung biopsy (denied), excision (denied), and in the absence of anything other than a radiographers interpretation, I was then denied potentially curative radiotherapy or surgery, both of which were on the cards for a young(ish) person like myself, with many years of life still to fight for. I’m going to be following this up with my care provider, remembering I have been off-treatment for almost a year. I am frantic my Mazal will change, and feel that this may not be one of my happier

communications. We are all feeling the pinch, so I am shocked at the amount of money being wasted on politically correct policies in the civil service. If you knew anti-bias training for civil servants had cost more than £400,000 over two years, for what is otherwise known as woke training, you’d refuse to pay your taxes. Other spending anomalies include Mr Blair’s now infamous trip to America, when “he came back and forgot about isolating rules,” even though he gave Matt a call in advance to check his position. With his attendant personal security team costs, plus hire of the private jet racking up £7000 per hour, he is possibly costing us more than HM the Queen. He’s turned himself into a fabulously wealthy speaker since his turn in office and I’m forever asking myself why on his multi million salary, he’s not funding these little sojourns himself? In Blair’s case, he also has a security detail watching his home constantly, which seems a bit steep when Margaret Thatcher (and doubtless other former PM’s) wasn’t afforded the same level of personal protection. I wonder if that’s because she annoyed fewer people, or had less of a problem with an inflating ego. All this is put in place at the taxpayers expense. Ask yourself, if it was so important that he make a presentation, could he not have travelled on British Airways, or even better, done it by Zoom like the rest of us mere mortals! Staying on the financial front I wonder if it would surprise anyone to hear that the British government paid up to £320 million of taxpayers money to the Chinese state run companies in their scramble to procure medical supplies during coronavirus. Part of this figure is attributable to the Department for Health and Social Care, who signed contracts with companies directly linked to Beijing, worth a total of £148 million. The Department for Health in Northern Ireland similarly awarded contracts worth £16 - 170 million for their PPE. It is surely iniquitous that someone can create such a problem, and then profit exponentially from it, although to be fair, it’s partly our own fault for having become so reliant on goods Made in China. Will we learn from this? Finally a huge thank you to those who tuned into my Zoom earlier this week. It was an opportunity for me to reminisce over various life events from my childhood to date, and was enhanced by my musical colleague Romano Viazzani, who joined us playing his accordion. It was my first ever attempt at a zoom presentation, albeit slightly interrupted by problems in WiFi connection. But I’m looking forward to giving an extended talk in the future. If I’m still here! Transforming hate and anger into love BY ARYEH SAMPSON The Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Hassidic movement, explained that ‘the world is a mirror’– the defects we see in others are a reflection of our own. When Moses sent spies on a reconnaissance mission to Israel, they returned with an evil report about the land of Israel. The Jewish people then accused G-d of hating them .The commentator Rashi explained that G-d loved them – but they hated G-d, and they projected those feelings onto G-d. Projection plays an important role in modern psychology. It is understood to be a defence mechanism that helps us deny seeing our weaknesses. We deny negative traits in ourselves and project them onto others. We therefore may come to hate others as we project our negative feelings about ourselves onto them. It’s also common for bullies and racists to project onto others all the bad that they feel about themselves and don’t want to face. Another ramification of this desire to deny weakness is anger. It’s common to find that anger arises when a person’s inner insecurities or vulnerabilities are triggered. This can be a cause of much conflict in marriage and relationships. These insecurities are often described
in psychotherapy as ‘the wounded inner child’ as they may have their origin in painful or traumatic experiences in childhood. This part of a person’s psyche then becomes disowned and denied.
The Talmud tells us that anger can act as an inner teacher, giving us greater self awareness. It reveals to us our own hidden insecurities – the nature of our own wounded child. Awareness, as Rabbi Salanter explained,
is the first step of personal change and leads to control and transformation of these weaknesses. There are many methods in psychotherapy to deal with overcoming insecurities and our wound-
ed inner child, as it provides a safe place to explore inner feelings. Often there is unfinished business from the past that needs to be dealt with. The origins of the wounded child need to be understood and painful experiences
expressed. This helps us heal and leads to greater self acceptance and love of ourselves. We can drop the desire to project negative feelings and become less angry. This in turn brings love and acceptance On a spiritual level, accidents or coincidences do not exist. Seeing hatred and anger in others is a call for us to look inside and become more self-aware. To face our inner demons and transform them. In doing so, we become more loving to ourselves and bring more love into the world.

Hazelnut Beef Stew Long slow cooking works a kind of magic with stewing beef/ or shin of beef. Over time, the gentle heat transforms the meat into tender juicy mouthfuls. Slow cookers or roasting on a low heat intensifies flavour as well as succulence. If you wish to increase the quantity for a large crowd just add more meat, keep the liquid measurements the same. Ideal for Friday night dinner or shabbat lunch. Preparation Time: 30 minutes Serves: 4 to 6

Winter one-pot wonders BY DENISE PHILLIPS With winter around the corner, one pot meals where you just place everything in one large saucepan or slow cooker makes dinner ‘tonight’ easy and straightforward. Whether you are living alone or are cooking for a family, planning meals in advance helps to ensure a healthy dish is ready when you want to eat. This type of meal preparation can be an economical option as using ‘slow cuts of meat’ are often the cheapest – shin of beef, stewing steak, chuck steak, beef brisket, chicken thighs, cubed turkey, rolled turkey breast but taste just amazing once simmered for 4-6 hours. Fattier cuts of meat are also better for slow cooking because the fat will help keep the meat moist as it cooks as well as adding flavour. Pulses, grains, and beans can make a small portion of meat go further or are also ideal vegetarian alternatives. Portion sizes can be easily divided so you can freeze for another time or enjoy the following day. One pot dishes are often a ‘time saver’ as you can time manage any preparation to suit you, no
last minute preparation is needed. Chopping, marinating, frying over ingredients can all be done in advance and will not spoil your recipe. Slow cooking is designed to be left to cook for long periods of time, so whether you are out or busy working from home, dinner is cooking, and you don’t need to attend to the process. Timers do the work for you, just check the manufacturers instructions according to the model you have. Slow cooking does not destroy more nutrients. In fact, the lower temperature may help preserve nutrients that are lost when food is cooked rapidly at high heat. What is more, foods cooked slowly often taste better, flavours have an opportunity to permeate and mature into the ingredient mix. Wine is a good example of an ingredient that expands its flavour but removes its alcoholic content. The amount of liquid you add to your one pot is important – too little and the ingredients will go dry and burn at the bottom of the saucepan and too much and it will boil over. The portion of liquid also depends on how long you plan to cook for. Grains, pulses, and rice require at
least double the amount of liquid. Do not fill your saucepan more than two-thirds full; you can always top up if required. The liquid in your one pot does not thicken, so roll your meat or vegetables in a small amount of seasoned flour before adding to the pot or add cornflour and mix to a paste with a little cold water at the end. Stir into your simmering saucepan, unless of course, you have ingredients included that would absorb the liquid – like grains, pluses etc. One pot recipes like coq au vin, roasted root vegetable casserole, vegetarian chilli with grains, sausage hot pot, chicken tray bakes, chicken or vegetable ramen (oriental noodle stew), risottos of all description, curries, almond chicken with rice, lasagne, spinach dhal, shakshuka, Spanish chicken and of course the classic chicken soup use just ONE POT! The variety of dishes is endless, and you can also make dessert too. Steamed puddings, stewed apple or pears and cakes can also be cooked in a ‘one pot’ saucepan. Above is one of my new recipes that I would like to share with you. It is a one pot recipe with a tasty topping.

Motoring: Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio With travel opportunities very much limited to the United Kingdom (and Jersey – the Shul has reopened with the revised restrictions https://jersey-jewish-congregation. business.site/ ) travel editor Malcolm Ginsberg continues with his series of monthly road tests. For October he reviews a true Italian Express, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, a sports salon with just about room for five.
Interior
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
Alfa is making something of a comeback in the UK after some years of losing its identity in the British market. To put in perspective the Lazio-based manufacturer is part of the Fiat Chrysler Group whose other Italian brands include Abarth, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati. In 2016 Ferrari was spun off, but engine wise this flyer has much input from its former partner, in charge Philippe Krief, previously a very senior engineer at Maranello, the home of the World’s oldest Formula 1 team.ri. When it comes to the traffic light grid the Quadrifoglio is up with the best of them, the quoted 0-60 in just 3.9sec, is quicker than the Jaguar XJR (4.6sec) although well behind the Tesla S astonishing 2.4sec. The Audi, BMW and Mercedes competitors are all in the 4sec segment and for the most part as much as £10,000 more expensive. As another comparison the Lexus UX, the subject of a BTN road test in February we thought quick but its 0-60 was only 8.4sec, sleepy by comparison.
FERRARI-DERIVED 510BHP 2.9-LITRE TWIN TURBO V6.
For the Alfa the quoted top speed of 176mph is twice that allowed on the Italian Autostradas, but legal on some German Autobahns, for those very brave (or foolish). Forget the 45 miles per gallon now the norm with sporty salons. This Alfa is in the 25 to 30mpg class with just about
400 miles on a full tank. BTN tried it across the North Yorkshire moors forgetting that petrol stations are far apart. The sat nav showed the distance to the next filling point but as we dived into Pickering the gauge indicated empty. We made it! Drinking all this fuel was a Ferrari-derived 510bhp 2.9-litre twin turbo V6 coupled to a special torque differential to get all that power down through the rear wheels.

Viewed externally the Quadrifoglio looks like any other model in the Giulia range except for three giveaways. The Quadrifoglio (or ‘Cloverleaf’) badge that the Italian maker applies only to its most focused models, and very attentive yellow brake callipers that sit behind the distinctive 19in alloy wheels and provide excellent stopping power. As becomes a sports saloon the handling is neat and precise with little body roll. Cars these days tend to be quieter and quieter. The Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio does not come into that category under hard acceleration. Inside and outside the noise you hear is sporty.
THIS TRULY IS A COCKPIT.
‘Active Torque Vectoring’ helps get the power down through the bends, ‘Active Suspension’ varies the damping and ‘Alfa Chassis Domain Control’ connects the different systems to deliver the best set-up as the car is being driven. Not visible but adding to the car’s outstanding performance is the use of ultra-lightweight materials including carbon fibre for the bonnet, roof, front splitter, rear spoiler and body inserts, as well as aluminium for the doors and wings. There has to be some serious negative points about a car with an ‘’on the road’ list price of £74,045. We searched for ages in both the handbook and around the car for the fuel filler release only to eventually realise that there was no such anti-thief measure. Clearly where this car is sold syphoning off petrol is a thing of the past. The Sparco Carbonshell Bucket Seats seat has a six-way manual adjustment. Once set it is fine but no memory for the next pilot. At £3,250 it does seem an expensive addition. We have a four-wheel drive Stelvio version coming
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
later in the year. It will be interesting to see what seat is fitted. For the pilot there is a sporty flat bottomed steering wheel with paddle adjustment. Included in the basic package is a whole host of features, many of which are now standard on most executive cars. These include blind spot warning in the rear-view mirror with rear cross path detection, lane departure warning, a 7in colour TFT instrument cluster far superior to the analogue system still fitted to some cars, and within it a turn indicator linked to the 8.8in navigation system. It is a fine alternative to the Head Up Display (HUD) offered by some manufactures. The eight-speed auto box is extremely smooth and particularly when you put your foot down. Digital audio broadcast armrest ports are a novel introduction, another way this Italian Express is different. Don’t look at the boot, whch is more than adequate. Look at the four exhuasts. Active Cruise Control is fitted to automatically adjust the car’s speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front. In conjunction with the traffic sign recognition system, this technology adjusts the speed to within the set limit, for a more comfortable drive. If you are an Alfa owner the system is probably very easy to get used to, but with an up/down switch it is different than cars on recent road tests. Plenty of room in back, but the middle seat would not be ideal for a long journey although provided with a seatbelt and headrest. It is part of the split 40/20/40 arrangement that offers even more space in the rear. The boot can be automatically raised from the key fob, but it is one way. You still have to pull down to close. www.alfaromeo.co.uk/models/ quadrifoglio

ASK THE RABBI
22 OCTOBER 2020
Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com THE HALACHA ON GRUDGES
Dear Rabbi Is there ever any sense or justification for bearing a grudge? My wife and my sister-in-law haven’t spoken in months. I thought Yom Kippur would thaw things but my wife is holding onto her grudge. Does Halacha have a perspective on this? Can you cite me sources please that I can share with her. Aaron Dear Aaron The Talmud (Megila 28a) quotes Rabbi Nechunya HaG-dol’s secrets for longevity, one of which was that he didn’t bear a grudge (“I was forgiving with my money”). Code of Jewish law (Orach Chaim 606:1) says one should not be resistant to forgiveness. The Rama (ibid) rules: One should not be stubborn about forgiveness. Maimonides (Laws of Teshuva 2:10) defines someone who refuses to forgive as “cruel.” The Midrash (Tanchuma Chukas) cites the Biblical story of Abraham and Avimelech observing that “as soon as the Philistines said ‘we have sinned’ Avraham immediately forgave them.” The Sefer HaTanya (Chapter 12) quoting the Zohar says, “as soon as there arises from his heart to his mind some animosity…or a grudge and suchlike, he gives them no entry into his mind.” From a psychological perspective, sensible people don’t hold grudges and understand that it’s better to forgive and forget than to let their negative emotions crowd out their positive feelings. Holding a grudge has a lot of detrimental effects on your wellbeing, including
increased depression, anxiety, and stress. Why let anyone who has wronged you have power over you? As the Tzemach Tzedek once said: “Adults hold grudges whereas children don’t hold grudges.” And he asked: “But adults are mature, children are immature. Why then does the child abandon the grudge while the adult can let it linger for days, weeks, sometimes even years?” And he answered: “Because children would rather be happy than be right. Adults would rather be right than be happy!” The grudge drags me down, it makes me feel despondent. But I don’t care! I’ll hold it for as long as I can, because I am right!” You want to be happy in life, go rediscover the child within. Spiritually speaking, one should not harbour a grudge because of the principle of mida kineged mida – measure for measure. If we act more forgivingly towards others, then G-d will act the same towards us. Finally, there’s the Sefer Hachinuch which makes the point that as everything is ultimately divinely ordained we need not bear any grudges, recognising that this too is part of some Divine plan. In the words of Joseph to his brothers when they pleaded before him, begging his forgiveness for selling him to Egypt: “You didn’t send me here, G-d did.” That’s high ground but each of us can get there.
PUTTING YOUR FOOT DOWN IN MARRIAGE
Dear Rabbi In the words of the Torah portion last week, it says, “and he shall rule over you.” This has always
troubled me. Does that mean that the husband gets to put his foot down? Does the wife ever get to put her foot down? Are there any exceptions? Amy Dear Amy Neve is keen for a third child. Judy puts her foot down: “We agreed only two!” Batya stopped covering her hair. Zalman puts his foot down: “This is unacceptable! You’re not the woman I married!” (Names have been changed to protect identity). These are two, more extreme examples where one might assume there is no room for compromise. They both involve critical decisions, one life altering and the other, fundamental Halacha. The aggrieved parties ought to be able to put their foot down because of a basic breach of trust. Yet one ought to consider, where will that lead? In either instance there is an inevitable impact on sholom bayis which supersedes all else. Needless to say in such extreme cases professional and spiritual authorities ought to be consulted. That is the essence of compromise. In lesser examples, a compromise can and must always be sought between the couple themselves. There is an ancient custom for a groom to step with his right foot on the left foot of the bride just before the finale of a Chupah, to reflect his dominance over her. Those who advocate for this have their spiritual reasons. The dissenters of the custom suggest it is a breach of the Biblical verse, Tamim tiheye im Hashem Elo-kecha - “You shall be whole with G-d…” This begs clarity. No
explanation is offered as to the correlation between the custom and the mitzvah of Tamim tihyeh – being whole with G-d. I would posit, per the observation of our Sages: “If man and woman are worthy then the Divine presence dwells amongst them.” This is alluded to by the fact that ish meaning man and isha meaning woman are made up of the same letters but that Ish (man) has

Mishna 13 more crucial advice. It is very important to learn Torah lishmah, for the sake of heaven. Those people who abuse the Torah for their own personal uses are condemned. This does not mean to say that you cannot legitimately make money from Torah. If you are skilled as a teacher you certainly should get paid to teach Torah. If you have a good voice you should learn how to be a good Chazan, or Baal Koreh. It is an honourable thing to do to make one’s living off Torah. People need

Only Hashem after 120 years can know if a person’s heart was genuine in seeking perfection and closeness to G-d, or if they just chased their name up in lights. May we all merit to strive mightily to honour Torah lishmah as it should be done, Amen.

Escape from dystopia BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Humanity is constantly searching for a better tomorrow. Dissatisfied with our current reality, we endlessly dream of a better world without hardships and sadness. This hope for a better world affirms our conviction that human beings are capable of building a more perfect landscape. As Jews, we don’t just believe in the possibility of better tomorrow- we actively yearn and pray for it. As advanced as our world sometimes feels, we acknowledge that, ultimately, our world is a fallen shell of the more perfect world which we were banished from. Through original sin, Man was expelled from that world and through repeated national betrayals Jews fell into a dark world of Exile. We constantly yearn for national restoration, religious revival and humanity’s return to the its original state of Eden. Though we believe in Man’s ability to improve his condition and advance that future, we look to G-d to provide complete renewal. Humans dream of a better world but Jews view that renewal as the inevitable conclusion of history. The phrase “chadesh yameinu k”kedem” (restore us as in days of yore) is both a prayer as well as a confident assertion of the inevitable terminus of history. In 1516 Thomas More, a Renaissance humanist, authored a book named Utopia and this phrase - adapted from Greekhas encapsulated humanity’s hopes and dreams for that better place. Recently, an approach called “dystopianism” has become popular in the general culture. As opposed to a utopian perspective which anticipates a more advanced world, dystopianism, popularized in books, movies and TV describes a world of disorder and dysfunction. Typically, in these storylines, an apocalyptic event such as war, contagion, or natural disaster reshuffles the world order, replacing it with a condition of suffering and injustice generally characterized by oppressive governmental control, rampant medical challenges, severe shortages of food and basics, loss of liberty and environmental calamity. Perhaps the most well-known examples from the past century are the books of George Orwell (1984, Animal Farm), while in this century, numerous movies and TV programs have been cast against dystopian backgrounds. At best, these stories provide a glimpse of the fragility of human society and the dangers of irresponsible political, social or environmental policies. However dystopian culture can offer an artificial escape from the challenges of our reality. Life provides each of us with personal adversity
and personal struggle; our triumphs empower us just as our failures and struggles dispirit us. Sometimes, as we feel trapped in our current reality, dystopian prophecies provide an escape: the current world as we know it - complete with our struggles and frustrations- may be ending and may be replaced by a harsher world. The current world is erased and we can start fresh!! Additionally, this future dystopian world is so harsh that mere survival is heroic and we can view ourselves as successful even without accomplishing the goals and milestones of our current world. Dystopia quietly allows us to ignore our failures in this world by anticipating a different world with more minimalist expectations. By introducing a harsher reality, dystopia “lowers the bar” and acquits us from our current failures and struggles. Of course, Judaism flatly rejects the notion of a sustained dystopia. Four thousand years ago the world descended into dysfunction, forcing G-d to reboot his world. Inviting Noah into His refreshed world, G-d promised that the world would never again be destroyed. The world into which Noah exited would be stable and its natural routine preserved. Humanity would sometimes fail and sometimes succeed but the natural world would be indissoluble. Doomsday prophecies about impending apocalypses, meteor collisions, or catastrophic global warming are mistaken. This Divine promise of sustainability doesn’t exempt us from environmental responsibility: as the pinnacle of G-d’s creation we are also watchmen of His world and mandated to interact with this world in a responsible and balanced fashion. Additionally, there may be apocalyptic events on the road to Messianic utopia, but an enduring condition of sustained dystopia will not emerge. The world as we know it will endure, and whatever challenges we currently face are ours to deal with – they won’t be deleted by a rebooting of the world order or by the introduction of a minimalist and survivalist world. This message of parshat Noach frames our view of present and future. Our Rabbis instructed us “hayom la’asotam u’l’machar l’kabel secharam’ (today is for performance while tomorrow is for reward), discouraging us from escaping into the future world of reward as an escape from the immense challenges and opportunities of this world. Religion is meant to ground us in the “present” even as we are aware of a dazzling future which awaits us. Just as we are anchored to the “present” and shouldn’t escape to Utopia we must also remain fastened to our world without
We constantly yearn for national restoration, religious revival and humanity’s return to the its original state of Eden. fleeing to Dystopia. Utopia is an actual future reality, yet we mustn’t be hypnotized by it; Dystopia is merely a mirage and we certainly shouldn’t be seduced by this illusion. What is true in general, is even more compelling during the current medical crisis- which sometimes can feel dystopian. The world isn’t ending and, at some point, G-d will help us solve this pandemic. Indeed, under our current conditions – merely surviving and maintaining our sanity, demands great courage and significant emotional resources. However, we can’t allow this dystopian situation to lower the bar of our moral and religious journey. Whatever dreams we possessed before 2020 must continue to inspire us even during this crisis. Whatever challenges we faced beforehand, remain an essential part of our growth as religious people. Surviving cannot be enough – especially for Jew who lives with a higher purpose and an eternal mission. Finally, while living through Dystopia we can’t forget how close we are to
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Utopia. The past hundred years have witnessed our survival both against brutal Nazi horrors as well against Communist attempts to eradicate religion. While these storms were raging, we tirelessly rebuilt our national fiber and, of course, resettled our ancient homeland. Much of the world was opposed and even overtly hostile to this historical project. Yet, we have inched closer to the fulfillment of the great prophecies of our past and of our Book. Dark clouds have now descended upon our world, as humanity, including our own people, suffer this medical pandemic. We may feel like residents of Dystopia but we are in fact authors of Utopia. One day the clouds will lift and we will see the shining towers of Utopia which continue to beckon history forward. Rabbi Moshe Taragin is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. Weekly Dvar Torah F RO M ERETZ Y I S R A E L
Ethics vs Etiquette BY RABBI SHALOM ROSNER At the end of Parashat Noach, following the story of the Flood, Noach left the Ark and planted a vineyard, with disastrous results: “And he drank of the wine and became drunk, and he uncovered himself within his tent” (Bereishit 9:21). Cham, the father of Kena’an, saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers who were outside. Shem and Yafet went into their father walking backwards and they covered their father’s nakedness. Chazal pick up on the fact that the pasuk says, “And Shem and Yafet took the garment, and they placed [it] on both of their shoulders, and they walked backwards, and they covered their father’s nakedness” (Bereishit 9:23). If Shem and Yafet took the garment, why is “and he took” written in the singular instead of in the plural “and they took”? Rashi quotes Chazal saying that this teaches us that Shem exerted
himself to fulfill the commandment more than Yafet did. Shem was rewarded for this and his children, the Jewish People, merited the mitzvah of the tallit with tzitzit, and Yafet merited the lesser blessing of burial. What does Rashi mean by saying that Shem fulfilled the mitzvah in a greater way than Yafet? It seems that Shem was the instigator. Yafet complied with Shem but it was Shem who initiated the idea. The question is what’s the root of this difference? Rav Soloveitchik presented the following idea. There’s a difference between ethics versus etiquette, the difference being what should be done versus what is done by many. Ethics is what I should do, it’s not what anyone else tells me to do or what is socially acceptable. It’s what is right because I know it’s what Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants me to do. Etiquette is based on the surroundings, on social norms and what is acceptable in the eyes of others. Shem acted based on ethics, on what he knew was right. He knew what he had to do, that he had to
answer to a Higher Authority. Etiquette, says Rav Soloveitchik, is what Yafet did. At this time, he followed Shem because he felt that Shem’s action was what was socially acceptable at the time. “And he took” - Shem was the one who took the real ethical initiative here. We see this in the lives of the great throughout our history. In Parashat Shemot, Moshe Rabbeinu goes out of the palace. On the first day he sees an Egyptian beating a Jew. What does he do? He takes the law into his own hands and defends the Jew. The next day he sees two Jews fighting and intervenes once again. On the third day he goes to Midian and involves himself in a conflict between non-Jews - the shepherds and Yitro’s daughters. In escaping to Midian, he’s trying to keep a low profile but he can’t stop himself. He can’t just stand idly by, because Moshe Rabbeinu doesn’t act based on etiquette. He acts based on ethics because that’s the essence of who Moshe Rabbeinu was. The Tur at the beginning of the
Halachot of Or HaChayim quotes the Mishna in Pirkei Avot: “Yehuda ben Taima said, be bold as a leopard, light as an eagle, swift as a deer, and strong as a lion to do the will of your Father in Heaven.” Why is this so prominent? Why does the Tur start off all of Halacha with this statement? The Tur himself explains that this is a great lesson in the service of G-d. Often a person wants to do the right thing but he’s nervous about what other people will say, he’s concerned with how he will be perceived. The Tur starts off all of halacha by saying: “A person might not always do the right thing because of his fear of being made fun of.” One has to do the right thing, based on ethics and not on etiquette, because Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants us to do it. Let us all follow the paths of Shem and of Moshe Rabbeinu that the Tur describes to us, and bring nachat to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE
Changing Nature RABBI GOODMAN In 1987 the American Medical Association officially termed addiction a disease. A disease is a condition that changes the way an organ behaves, which is what addiction does to the brain physiologically. Addiction rewires the brain’s fundamental structure, altering the nature of the addict. In 1883, Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik (the Bais Halevi), based on this week’s Parsha, explained how addiction rewires the brain’s fundamental structure, altering not only the nature of the addict, but also the nature of everyone and everything around him. Referring to the immorality of Noach’s generation, the Pasuk says, “And G-d saw the earth and behold it was corrupted, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.” Rashi learns from the all-inclusive term “all flesh” that even the animals hybridized. The Bais Halevi questions how this
phenomenon was possible. Unlike human beings, animals cannot choose to corrupt their lives and behave immorally. Animals are bound by the laws of their nature and that nature does not include crossbreeding. The Bais Halevi answers with a profound insight into the biology of man. Hashem infused man’s habitual action with the power to alter the natural order of creation. When a person repeatedly succumbs to a desire, he intensifies the power of that desire in the world, enabling it to exert greater control over him and over the world at large. Although logically this makes no sense, its truth is readily apparent. For example, an Israeli and an Englishman cannot stand in line (in a queue) at the supermarket without having an argument because the Israeli has been influenced and shaped by impetuous Middle Eastern culture while the Englishman has been influenced by well-mannered English culture.
The Bais Halevi explains that the immoral action of Noach’s generation was so acute that it changed the inherent nature of the animals, instilling within them a deep-seated desire to cohabit with other species. Behaviour that had never been part of their nature became for them second nature. The implications of this Bais Halevi are mind-boggling. Firstly, we are at the mercy of our surroundings whether we like it or not. Furthermore, whenever we surrender to our baser instincts, not only are we digging ourselves into a deeper hole, but we are also making spiritual life much harder for our families and communities. Nevertheless, we should not feel discouraged or deterred. On the contrary, this awareness will heighten our sensitivity to the effect of our environment and the choice of our actions, which will in turn improve the quality and beauty of our spiritual growth. Noach RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
RIGHTEOUS IN HIS GENERATION
The Torah is certain that Noah was a righteous man, but why does it go on to qualify its own words by saying, “righteous in his generation”, or literally “righteous in his generations”? One opinion is that the generations in which he lived were those before and those after the flood. Each was a different generation and each required a different expression of righteousness. Every generation, every situation, calls for a particular kind of righteousness. There are times to speak out: there are times to keep your peace and pray to survive to a more amenable generation. There are times to create: there are times to conserve (that was Bialik’s principle when, after years of creating literature, he decided to conserve and preserve the literature of the past). There are times to work on your own heart, mind and soul: there are times to move out into the affairs of the community. In Jewish theology the same doctrine may be discerned. There were ages in which Jewish teaching was more active in the global marketplace of ideas: there were ages when Jewish thinkers worked more within and for the internal needs of the
Jewish people themselves. There is a saying, “Dor dor v’dor’shav”, each generation has its expositors; building on this saying, there are leaders of one type who are needed in a particular generation but leaders of a different type in a different generation.
can we help ourselves to survive, and if we do survive, how should we celebrate our survival and build on it wisely and responsibly? The story of Noah and the flood evokes so many questions: can we find the answers?
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
DISMEMBERING THE TEXT
Human beings get their ten minutes of fame in all sorts of ways. An example is the sporadic “discoverers” of Noah’s Ark. Mount Ararat certainly exists (there are also places called Ararat in Australia, the USA. and other countries – maybe because there might have been flooding in these areas at one time. Who knows?). The realistic possibility of finding the Biblical ark is highly remote, however. It was all so long ago, and who can be certain that something reminiscent of a boat, even if its proportions are roughly similar to those in the Bible, really does date back to Noah? Probably more important is to find a meaning for life in the Noah story. For example: can wicked people or groups get away with their evil and corruption for ever, without G-d taking a stand? If the world seems to be on the verge of destruction or self-destruction, can we be certain that it will survive? After all, G-d promised never again to send an all-encompassing flood, but did He promise that other types of destruction would never occur? If we are caught up, as individuals, groups or nations, in destruction, how
The so-called Higher Critics (Solomon Shechter called them Higher Antisemites) insist that the Torah is a poorly redacted conglomeration of sources. One example is the story of the Flood. They find in it two distinct narratives with their own separate linguistic and stylistic characteristics and with contradictory details. As an example, there seems to be a source where Noah brings one pair of animals into the ark and in another, one pair of unclean animals but seven pairs of clean animals. But when you look at the text you find little warrant for this view. The crucial words are “sh’nayim mi-kol” (Gen. 6:19). They are only problematical if translated “two of every kind”, but not if they are rendered “pairs of every kind”, i.e. male and female, as the end of the verse makes clear. A second argument is that the length of the Flood is described in two different ways – in one source, over a year (the waters prevail for 150 days and then decrease) and in another, 61 days (40 days and 40 nights and then three weeks). The question revolves around the sending of the dove.
22 OCTOBER 2020
The 61-day theory presumes that Noah sent out the raven the moment the rains stopped; on that same day the raven failed to return; and seven days later the dove was sent out. Logic, and the text of Gen. 8:6, would dictate that after the water began to subside, Noah waited forty days until he sent out the raven, which came and went several times (verse 7) at seven-day intervals before it finally failed to return, having found dry land. The whole episode thus took much longer than a mere 40 or 61 days.. Rabbi Apple served for 32 years as the chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, Australia’s oldest congregation. As explained in the last segment, the Torah forbade forming a thick mixture on Shabbat, whereas the Rabbis extended the prohibition to loose mixtures. A classic example of a thick mixture is flour and water which together form a dough. A loose mixture would be something with a consistency similar to a batter, which would pour from one utensil to the other. A mixture which is watery and involves no binding such as a drinking powder with water has no Lash-related prohibition at all. The Rabbis of the Talmud allowed certain instances of creating loose mixtures if they are done in an unusual manner. The first change from the norm must be to reverse the order of inserting the ingredients. So, for example, if one usually
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
places a solid followed by a liquid, they must do the reverse on Shabbat. One must also include sufficient liquid to ensure that a loose mixture results, not a thick one. On top of this they may only mix in one of the following manners: 1. If one mixes with a spoon and instead of stirring, runs the implement in “criss-cross” manner. The best practice if this option is chosen is to remove the implement between the vertical action and horizontal action and then place it back in to continue. 2. Stirring with a finger instead of a spoon. 3. Shaking the utensil containing the food items, which achieves a mixture. There are certain circumstances in which even forming a thick mixture will be permitted (provided there is an advantage in having it done on the day itself and there is not a non-Jew nearby who could do it instead) if one fulfils the above conditions and changes the manner and order in which it is prepared. These are: (1) If the mixture is needed for a baby or (2) a sick person (3) an animal or (4) forming the mixture before Shabbat would spoil it (and forming a loose mixture of the same is not possible). We will next discuss some examples of mixtures which can occur on a weekly basis.

Noach This week’s sidra is full of action! First we learn of the major flood that Hashem brought upon the world due to the many sins that they had done. Noach spent many years building a huge boat-like structure, with 3 floors. Top floor for people, middle floor for animals and lowest floor for garbage. Noach was told to bring in 2 of every non-Kosher animal and 7 of every Kosher quite an effort to look after a crowd like that for most of a year! After the flood, Noach plants a vineyard and becomes drunk. His sons Shem and Yafes look after him and he blesses them. Noach is shown a rainbow and Hashem promises that He will never bring a flood against the whole world again. The nation’s of the world try building an enormous tower, but Hashem stops their plan as they had bad intentions when building it - they were trying to show how strong they were... Finally we are introduced to our great (great great…) grandfather Avram! With the entire world serving idols Avram was able to say ”NO”. It was a struggle against mighty people, but eventually Avram was going to succeed. Big time! Some times one needs patience.

Noach
In a nutshell Parshat Noach details the story of the major flood that was suffered by the entire world population as a result of their sins. One man remained with his family and that was Noach. The only righteous man in his generation, with some of his family following his good ways, Noach first heard about the flood 120 years before it was brought on. Hashem instructed him to build a Teiva – an ark, with three tiers. The lowest level was for the waste, the middle for the animals and the top floor for Noach, his wife and family. Each of the animals and birds destined to be Kosher were brought in groups of seven, whereas those not Kosher came in groups of two. For a year, Noach devotedly fed and nourished the animals. The first 40 days of the flood involved heavy rain. Then for 150 days the waters churned and raised to mountain top heights. In order to detect whether or not it was time to leave the ark, Noach sent out a raven. Eventually he also sent out a number of doves
and, when one returned with a leaf, he understood the flood is over. The ark landed on Mount Ararat. After the flood was finished, Noach is shown a rainbow in the sky and Hashem reveals to him that this would be used as a sort of testimony that Hashem will never bring a worldwide flood again against mankind. Noach is now allowed to eat meat – which was not previously allowed – and warned that flesh or blood of a living animal is not allowed to be eaten. These, among seven Mitzvot of the “sons of Noach” apply to all of mankind, as everyone is a descendant of Noach. Noach had walked out of the Teiva into a new world and started again by offering sacrifices to Hashem and by planting a vineyard. Consuming the produce of the vineyard turned Noach drunk, and he was left in a uncomplimentary state. His son, Cham did not respond correctly to this and was therefore cursed by Noach to be the father of a nation of slaves. Shem and Yafes, the other two boys, respectfully covered up

their father, protecting his honour, and were blessed by Noach. The sidra continues with the story of the Tower of Bavel. Some nations thought it wise to build a tower and, as it were, go up to the top to take on G-d Himself! Hashem dispersed them by revealing new languages, which confused the project workers, and the idea was then abandoned. At the end of the Sidra, we are introduced to our beloved ancestor Avram. Born into a family of idolworshippers, he was the only one to stand up for what was right, to recognise that it was Hashem who created the world and that there is no true power besides Hashem. He was thrown into the fire of Kasdim by Nimrod, but, guess what? He emerged completely unharmed as if he had just walked around a pleasant garden. Next week, Hashem will tell Avram to travel away from his father’s home and head for the land of Cana’an.

VAR controversy in Merseyside thriller

equaliser to earn a draw. Chelsea can match any team on their day, but like Tottenham, defensive frailties are evident. Manchester City, meantime, got back on the winning trail with Raheem Sterling thumping home the only goal against Arsenal after Phil Foden’s shot had been saved midway through the first half. Whilst Pep Guardiola’s team are not firing on all cylinders, opponents beware, City will have a huge say in the destination of the title race as will Manchester United who bounced back in style from their 6-1 home defeat to Tottenham with a terrific 4-1 win at Newcastle United. Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer came into this clash under immense pressure and will have been delighted to see his team come from behind to pick up the win. The scores were level with minutes remaining after Harry Maguire, who has endured a torrid time for club and country on and off the pitch this season, equalised Luke Shaw’s own goal. David de Gea made a stunning stop with the scores level although United would have led had Bruno Fernandes not missed his first penalty for the club after 10 perfect spot kicks. But Fernandes had the last word as he edged his team in front on 86 minutes before stoppage time goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, his first for thePHOTO: club, and DAVID SAFFER Marcus Rashford with an assured finish. In other fixtures, Wolves came out on top of a hard-fought clash against Leeds United thanks to Raul Jimenez’s deflected 70th minute strike off an unlucky Kalvin Phillips as Nuno Espirito Santo’s team picked up a deserved third league win. VAR correctly ruled out an earlier Jimenez effort for offside. Wilfried Alexis MacAllister earned a point for Brighton after Wilfred Zaha had slotted in an early first half penalty. HMH hit historic 38 goals in Anekstein Trophy
HMH on the attack against the Wallabies
BY DAVID SAFFER HMH created history with a 38-0 win against West Hendon Wallabies in the Cyril Anekstein Trophy at the Hive. HMH are among the cup favourites and they were playing a Second Division side in only their second season. The difference in class was an almighty chasm but the final result was still astonishing. Aside from the record goal scoring achievement, 13 players scored and seven players hit hat-tricks. In an astonishing display of attacking football, Oscar Wagner notched seven goals, Leo Ackerman and Dom Feldman five apiece, and Alex Moss four. Eli Wegrzyn, Ethan Krell and Dan Hardoon all hit trebles, Natey Kashket and Jake Norton braces. Max Foster, Sammy Kingston, Sam Monjack and Ben Winters also hit the target. HMH boss Avi Goldberg was almost lost for words with the result, smashing the previous high score of 23. “All credit to Hendon for seeing out the match but we blew them away from start to finish,” he said. Maccabi London FC are flying high in the league alongside HMH and disposed of Scrabble 5-1 thanks to a second half hattrick from super-sub Joe Santhouse. Ben Kohler and Benji Weinberger completed the scoring. Max Kyte commented, “It wasn’t our best performance and we struggled to dominate in the first half. We upped our level and Santhouse won the game. It was

final third if we want to win silverware this season.” First Division Borussia Barnet, meantime, did stun Premier side Faithfold White 3-1. Jonny Kaye was the cup hero as Temple Fortune came from behind to win 3-2 in last minute of a thrilling encounter at FC East London Bees. The hosts led 2-1, Simon Cohen scoring for Fortune, with 15 minutes to go Bentley Levy made a remarkable double save before Shai Revevo equalised. With the match heading to extra time Kaye grabbed the headlines. Fortune’s Simon Linden commented, “We’re pleased to get through, it was tricky cup tie but we dug deep so credit to the lads. Hopefully this will kickstart our season.” Hertswood Vale thumped London Bears 5-1 in an all-Division One clash, Vale started the game strongly and took the lead through Robbie Metzger who bagged his first goal for the club on 10 minutes after Harry Graham won the ball to set up the finish. Vale wasted opportunities and Bears equalised but the hosts regained the before half time, Graham allowing Dan Reuben to tap home. Vale extended the lead with an outstanding effort from Graham shortly after the break following a brilliant through-ball from James Millet. Bears had a player sent off with 15 minutes to go and Vale wrapped up the win, Reuben setting up Josh Gorb for his first of the season. Millet made it five late on from Gorb’s corner. “The boys were superb and stuck to our tactics throughout,” commented Vale’s Jacob Emmanuel. “It was a good game with both keepers pulling off some decent saves. It’s nice to be through to the next round for the first time in our history.” NWL Azzurri without key players due to injuries and isolation eased past Faithfold Green 4-0 with goals from Ethan Mooney, Zak Jackson, Ollie Miracco and Josh Sarna-Star. Spencer Saffer commented, “The performance highlights the depth in the squad. We looked solid at the back and dangerous up top.” Ben Binder bagged a brace as FC Team comfortably defeated Hampstead Ducks 5-1. Craig Sandford, Ben Sollosi and Richard Salmon completed the win. “All our players gelled and it was a great example of attacking football,” commented Jonathan Pearl. Brook Farm Rovers came through a visit to Club de Chigwell 4-1 with Dan Cohen

hitting a hat-trick. Philippe Auret also found the target. Player-boss Cohen noted, “We were dominant from start to finish, everyone put a massive shift in.” Fairlop defeated Redbridge Jewish Care 2-0 with strikes from Harrison Grant and James Jaconelli in a dominant display. “The score line suggests a much closer match that it was,” said Fairlop’s Jake Sanders. “Redbridge stood firm, but it was oneway traffic, with one team trying to win the game. The boys responded well after the break, and after remaining patient, got their reward. We’re delighted to get through.” Premier Jewdinese showed their class in a thumping 9-0 win against Straw Hat Pirates. Reiss Mogilner hit a hat-trick, Zack Collins (2), Scott Oldstein (2), Grant Reingold and Brad Dryer grabbed the goals in a straight forward win.

“Credit to Pirates for not giving up, we’re happy with the goals but more the quality of some of them,” said Darren Lawrence. Liron Mannie hit four goals as North London Raiders struck down SPEC FC 8-0. Nyv Bogaire, Jordan Marks, Gavin Fox and Charlie Cohen also scored. Away from the cup, North London Galaxy moved into a share of third place with their first Premier League win of the campaign against Faithfold Blue. Joey Gold scored four goals and James Belchak bagged a brace including a 30yard rocket in a 6-1 victory. “We came out the traps and scored an excellent goal from Gold’s instinctive volley lobbing the keeper,” said Luke Lewis. In Division One, Mill Hill Dons routed Paris Saint Jewmain 6-0 courtesy of a Harry Moss hat-trick, Zach Cohen brace and Jonny May strike. Brandom Hamme noted, “The boys played superb, we put a proper shift in and got the result to match the performance.”
MJSL news Jewventus defeated Reich Masters 7-4 in the Manchester Jewish Soccer League. Akiva Rosen, Shimi Mozes and Osher Landes scored first half goals for Jewventus, Adam
