The eyes of the world will be on Westmin ster Abbey for the State funeral of Her Maj esty Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.
Yet just an hour after we sent the paper to the printers, official news came out that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had died.
Shethem.truly set an example of what it means to be an icon in today’s world in a modest way, and she should be rightly applauded.

Each corner of the platform is guarded around the clock by units from the Sovereign’s Bodyguard, the Household Division, or Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London.
Last Thursday was a unique day to say theIt’sleast.always busy on deadline day but this was a new scenario- as our paper was al most ready to go to print, news came out that the Queen had taken very ill and her family had all raced to her bedside.
Some one thousand members of the armed forces took part in ceremonial dress as bandsmen played sombre music. Guns were fired in Hyde Park and Big Ben tolled each minute of the walk.
Imagine the reaction when Mashiach arrives? If this is what the Queen of England gets we should drool with excitement over the prospects of the end of days, when our people are all reunited in Israel once more. Our rabbis of old said that it’s good to see royalty to compare not just with Mashiach but also with Hashem. If people are pre pared to camp out for 10 days on the Mall for a human ruler, we should take to heart as we approach the days of Rosh Hashanah how Hashem is always close, always listen ing if we simply reach out and talk to him! We can pray in any language at any point of the day.

In a panic I called the printers who said they had not printed yet and we had an other 20 minutes.
King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward followed by Prince William and Prince Harry, walked behind the Queen’s coffin carried on a gun carriage, which was used by her parents, during the 38-minute walk from Bucking ham Palace to Westminster Hall yesterday.
She brought honour and majesty to this country in her life and it is only appropri ate that she gets the same in her death, as this Monday’s funeral will show and all the build up has proven.
King Charles III will head the Royal family in mourning. World leaders will be among 2,200 people at the ceremony in the heart of London which will be woven into the rich tapestry of British history.
It’s amazing what you can do in that time and full credit to my team for redoing the front page so quickly, enabling us to be the first printed newspaper in the UK with news of the Queen’s death on our front page.
A few things have struck me the last few days. The reaction to her death from the vast amount of people across the world is prob ably unparalleled in history. I doubt any other King or Queen or even an American President would get the sheer amount of column inches and airtime, the huge vol ume of people talking about them, travelling to see the funeral procession or camping out for days just to get a glimpse of the coffin.
An estimated one million people are ex pected to pay their respects in the coming days to Queen Elizabeth who is Lying-inState at the historic site.
I met the Queen once, at a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. It was striking how petite she was in real life yet she walked with tremendous purpose and speed and had a real presence about her as I recited the customary blessing made on royalty.
The Princess Royal’s husband Vice-Ad miral Sir Tim Laurence, her son Peter Phillips, the Queen’s cousin, the Duke of Gloucester and nephew the Earl of Snow don also participated.
The end of the Elizabethan era came about so suddenly, despite the fact that she was 96. Many people simply assumed she would go on and on so it indeed came as a huge shock to everyone that Her Majesty had passed away.

It is with immense sorrow that we mourn the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The late Queen will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers, and those of the whole of Israel, are with the entire Royal Family and the United Kingdom for your loss. May her memory forever be a blessing.
Our crowdfunder campaign is dedicated to the memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II NEW DATES 21 - 22 SEPTEMBER
By supporting our crowdfunding campaign on Wednesday and Thursday 21-22 September, you can ensure that every child and family in need of help will be seen and supported.
Our thoughts are also with His Majesty King Charles III, as we wish him every strength and guidance upon his accession to the throne.
The late Queen was a beacon of hope and a symbol of unity to many. Adored and respected the world over, she was kind hearted and showed great warmth and charm. Having met her, I know that she also possessed remarkable wisdom, bolstered by her astonishing seventy years on the throne. As Britain’s long est-reigning monarch, she was the embodiment of true majesty. She showed unique leadership and will be missed all around the world.
Each year, across Israel, thousands of children and families suffer from devastating socio-economic problems and many are at-risk and vulnerable. Though most of us never see this first-hand, Emunah absolutely sees the need every day, responding and acting to improve lives wherever and whenever it can.
A friend of the Jewish community, the late Queen championed lessons of the past, notably through her private dialogues with Holocaust survivors. She also did much to commemorate the Shoah publicly, such as opening Britain’s first Holocaust memorial.

The World Cup was the pinnacle, but do mestically the national sport’s biggest day was the FA Cup final at Wembley. It was an era before satellite television, indeed, the only live games were the cup final and England vs Scotland annual clash in the Home Internationals, a tournament last played in 1983/84. For footballers a Wem bley appearance was almost impossible so winning ‘the Cup’ had extra meaning. The whole country came to a standstill and if the Queen presented a winners’ medal, it was particularly special.

Jamie Murray saw red early on but Galaxy rallied with goals from Josh Cohen and Jacob Leigh to record an important 2-1 away
Trautmann recalled: “I went for my medal and the Duke of Edinburgh asked if I was okay. I told him it was like going to the dentist with bad toothache! No doctor examined me before we headed off to the Cafe Royal. Back in Manchester I saw an osteopath. I had five vertebrae out of place. He tried to manipulate them back into po sition and told me four were back in. He had another try at the fifth, pushing my head back. It was very painful but couldn’t do it. He wanted me to return but there

Jones told me, “I realised we’d won the Cup and wanted to receive my medal from the Queen. No injury was going to stop me. After they strapped up my arm I slowly got up and began to walk across the pitch. I had no idea Billy had collected the Cup and the lads had their medals. I was determined to climb the Royal Box steps and receive my medal from the Queen. I found out later I’d kept her waiting for 10 minutes! Mick Bates had my medal, but I wanted to meet the Queen so Norman Hunter helped me up the steps. Everyone was slinging their arms around me. I nearly collapsed at the top of the stairs but we got across the Royal Box. When I approached the Queen, she told me there was nothing to give me. It didn’t matter. She shook my hand and asked me how I was.
“We had a number of players out, Rebuck got injured, so I couldn’t have asked any more from the players. We wish Ben a speedy recovery.

He recalled, “The buzz, the atmosphere, that was the best I have ever heard. We met the Queen, which was a bit of a blur, but I seem to re call she was wearing all red. She backed the right horse that day! It’s all a blur after the game. We went up and got the medal. I couldn’t say anything to the Queen, I couldn’t say much to anyone. It will be a time of change ahead, to get used to having a King as Head of State, with a Queen Consort, and we wish them both much blessings and success in this new era.
For me, personally, I took it as a message that as one human Monarch passes, our true enduring King of Kings is constantly present.Notonly that, but we are taught that every Jew is Ben or Bat Melech, a son or daughter of the King.

We are Jewish, we are part of the UK. It very important that if you can to take yourselves out of your world and enter an other, to see history infold and to admit uncertainty and sadness again.
Firstly, I think it is most appropriate that of all weeks for the JSCN to hold this Shabbaton, it has by no coincidence, fall en at this raw time, just 24 hours after we all learnt the sad news, at a time when we need to gather together as a community. To share memories of a simply outstanding Queen who remained deeply committed to a life of service until the very end. She was, and always will be, an inspiration to us as a Jewish community and to the world.
How can we stand before Hashem in two weeks time and plead for forgiveness for our mistakes, pray for a good year, of health, prosperity etc if there may be some body you may have hurt intentionally or

My blessing to us all is that we wear our Jewish crowns with pride and humility, with honesty and sincerity and may Hashem bless us all with a peaceful, healthy and happy year to come.
On that note, let’s all hope and pray that our new King Charles III During her lifetime, internalised all that he had seen and heard Since he knew that sooner or later And Baruch Hashem, it was the latter He was in line and would be called upon one day to royally serve
Family and friends, as we continue to have 10 days of National mourning For the late Queen Elizabeth II, I just cannot help but continue thinking That we, the Jewish people, will very soon experience Our own, annual “10 Days of Awe,” or “of Penitence.” With the Chagim of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur fast approaching

During these times, may we be able to reflect upon major matters Such as life, death and our behaviour as to what is expected of us By Hashem and people in this post-Elizabethan era And in 5783, our New Year, and immediate future May the same criteria apply to the new government under Liz Truss
And to believe that the next stage in our living in the UK is about to begin and how what will that look like?
I took my children to the weddings and Royal Ascot to see a Royal modestly ad vertising the country we are part of and I was proud to show my children modesty does exist outside of Stamford Hill and its something to be proud of.

The grief is real. I went up to Buckingham Palace to feel collective grief. To know I am not alone in sharing this emotion within my heart, as I saw endless people streaming by, of all ages, all types from all over. This is a metaphor to be interstood as follows. During the year royal subjects would have to travel to the Palace to greet the King, but in the month of Elul, the King comes out of the palace, to the fields to be much closer and approachable to the people.Knowing Hashem is giving us this oppor tunity to seek him out during Elul prepares us for the Days of Judgement in just over two weeks.

The Queen was a great supporter and admirer of Jewish interests although it is a great shame she never managed to visit the State of Israel. However, she departed from Royal protocol to listen to Holocaust survivors. At an event at St James Palace to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks recounted that when it came for her to leave “she stayed and stayed.” The Queen gave each survivor her focused, unhurried attention.Hermother-in-law, Princess Alice, who saved Jews during the Holocaust, was a great example to her.

50 years ago 11 Israeli athletes were murdered during the 1972 Sum mer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, by eight members of the Palestinian ter rorist group Black September. Two were murdered at the outset and after a period of negotiation West German police am bushed the terrorists, and killed five of the eight Black September members, but the rescue attempt failed and all of the hostages wereSincekilled.then we have seen the 1973 Yom Kippur War, various Intifadas, the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and numerous at tempts to reach a peace settlement. Yet despite all these activities and what some might see as changes, we are pretty much in exactly the same place as we were 50 years ago. Only we are not. Israel is now a major economic power in the region and increasingly so on the world’s stage. With each Israeli election it has become clear that the intransigence of the Palestinian leadership has relegated the issue of peace talks low down the list of political promises.

In other words, by their actions the Pal estinian leadership has created a scenario where their opponents see no purpose in engaging in talks which are going to be doomed to failure from the outset. Whilst this is a depressing prospect, it is none theless true. What is also true is that large numbers of those in the UK who describe themselves as left-wing either cannot see or refuse to see this and insist that Israel is at Andfault.therein lies the problem. Those who continue to blame Israel are simply giving support for the Palestinian leaders to continue with supporting terror and de manding the destruction of Israel. For as long as the left (both Jewish and non-Jew ish) ignore the reality of the Palestinian leadership and claim that the Palestinians are victims of Israel, the attacks against Israel and Jews will continue. Take away that support and isolate those responsible for these attacks, then the money will stop flowing and the incentive to promote terror will

It is poignant for me as her reign spanned nearly the whole of my life, as I was born inMy1949.first recollection of the Queen was the Coronation in 1953, which I watched at our family friends, the Manuels, in their lounge at Hendon, on an early Bush TV. It was the first time I had seen anything on television and my outstanding memories are of Queen Salote of Tonga travelling around the Vic toria memorial waving to the crowds in the rain, and the Scottish regiments playing bagpipes resplendent in their kilts.
It is said that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
As a little boy, I was regularly taken to the Changing of the Guards by my late father Cyril and carried on the tradition with my own children for Trooping the Colour with the Queen taking centre stage on her horse Burmese. I was an avid collector of British Colonial and Commonwealth stamps with the New Age stamp album having a space for every new stamp issued by a British colony or Commonwealth country, bearing the Queen’s head.

Pre-RoshSupplementHashanah
In response to a 1958 letter from a Jewish hospital chaplain in Brooklyn regarding blowing the Shofar at Rosh Hashanah, the Rebbe explained that an aspect of the Sho far was to coronate G-d Almighty as king of the universe. All Jews should have the opportunity to hear the call of the Shofar.
“Strolling along a street in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, I saw a young man with a shy, fish-out-of-water look about him,” wrote Ellie Spielberg in The New York Times’s Metropolitan Diary in 1994. “He stopped and asked if I’d heard the Shofar being blown that day. I answered no. So, he opened his jacket, whisked out a small ram’s horn and gave me a private concert. With joyful abandon, he played and played, conjuring trills, stops and drones of a tune as old as the Bible. I closed my eyes. Then he stopped, tucked away the Shofar, said ‘Shona Tovah”, Happy New Year, and was gone. It was the best Rosh Hashanah I’ve had.”
Sadly, for any number of reasons, not everyone can be in a shul come the holiest days of the Jewish calendar so there are good-hearted individuals who ensure this is addressed. But I’m well aware ChabadLubavitch have a comprehensive program to ensure the Shofar is accessible to all.
I’ll be at Shenley’s synagogue this time around when Rabbi Alan Garber carries on the age-old tradition. It’s the first year since my father passed away so it will be particularly emotional.
Rebbe’s ‘Shofar campaign’ approaches seven decades
“The National Jewish Post & Opinion in October 1960 reported, “Farmers in the Lubavitcher cooperative ‘Kfar Chabad,’ are rich in … zeal. Starting on the Rosh Hashanah holidays, they, along with local Chassidim, trek to all hospitals within walk ing distance of their synagogue and blow the Shofar for bedridden patients.”
The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s ‘Shofar blowing’ campaign at Rosh Hashanah is almost 70 yearsTheold.background to blowing a Shofar in parks and a plethora of venues was influ enced by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M Schneerson, who launched his Rosh Hashanah program in 1953.

“By the end of the day, my lips would be drooping, but for me, it was enjoyable and rewarding.”Chabadproved a hit throughout Califor nia during the swinging 60s. A decade on and emissaries took the Shofar campaign to hospitals in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Long Beach and Berkeley.
Rabbi Shlomo Cunin, founding director of Chabad California, told Bnai Brith Mes senger in 1971, “We have received hun dreds of letters from bedridden patients and their families thanking us for making available to them the Shofar blowing. The Shofar, which ushers in the New Year for the Jews, has historically brought hope and inspiration for brighter things to come in the future.” A message of positivity was growing. Before
The Rosh Hashanah Brooklyn initiative became a permanent fixture after the founding of the Lubavitch Youth Organ isation of New York in 1955 alongside a street ‘lulav ‘n’ etrog’ program.
The new decade saw visitors around the world, many from Israel, travel to New York to take in the Jewish holidays and hope to meet the Rebbe. Blowing the Shofar before prayers or in the afternoon became part of Rosh Hashanah in Brooklyn. The media soon took note.
RoshTheHashanah.Rebbestressed the healing it brought to patients in hospitals. And in 1978, he noted that blowing the Shofar for patients “literally revives souls”.
Nothing reminds a Jew of who they are like the sound of a Shofar. In a few days, Jews will be transfixed in shuls, public parks, hospitals, homes and streets around the world including Brooklyn where it all began 69 years ago.
Two years on, encouraged by Rabbi Hecht, Pinchot organised Shofar blowing in a hospital. He recalled, “It was quite an experience. People would break into tears.”
In 1991, visitors to New York for the High Holy Days to meet the Rebbe had increased exponentially. Eyewitnesses recall the Reb be observing huge crowds and stressing an expectation that those gathered participate.
The idea of bringing Jews to the streets was not really considered. You either heard the Shofar in shul or you didn’t. I’m too young to offer proof, but reports testify to this notion. However, it appears the cam paign was a Chabad pilot initiative, a fore runner of many mitzvah campaigns.
Goldberg was among volunteers who blew the Shofar for patients at a hospital and in people’s homes on Rosh Hashanah.
Rosh Hashanah 1974, the Rebbe expanded his Shofar campaign to include the month of Elul, when by custom the Shofar is blown daily except for the eve of

There is something uniquely special about hearing the Shofar notes “tekiah, shevarim and teruah”. When my children were young you could see the wonderment in their faces and I know it will be the same for my four grandsons in shul this month.
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Hecht, of Chabad Chicago, recruited Shofar-blowing volun teers, including his brothers-in-law Roy Pinchot and David Goldberg.
Rosh Hashanah is around the corner and for as long as I can remember hearing the Shofar blown was the highlight of High Holy Day services on Rosh Hashanah and YomGrowingKippur.up in Leeds, my late father, Har old Saffer, always made sure I was in shul along with my siblings when the Rabbi, Chazan or whoever had the honour took centre stage. One year, I recall at least three senior members taking part such was the pressure before a one thousand packed shul!On the whole though, it was an annual moment when you can hear a pin drop.

be delivered to the Rebbe. The campaign escalated to kibbutzim in Israel.
And the coming years would see the Reb be develop the campaign to include Jews in prison and even more hospitals as the Chabad movement grew.
“I was amazed at how many would be eagerly hoping for us to come,” he said.
When Chabad students took to the streets of Brooklyn, New York with Shofarsin-hand a revolution quite literally started. No one had experienced anything like it before. The campaign was simple, blow the Shofar to anyone not able to hear it. The Rebbe’s campaign for all Jews to hear the Shofar was spiritually uplifting and has not changed over the ensuing decades.

Honey plays a major part in the Rosh Hashanah celebrations - representing a sweet and healthy forthcoming New Year. There are many reasons, one is that it symbolises our relationship with G-d: bees are known for the sweetness of their honey but if you annoy them, they can sting - reminiscent of the image of a stern but merciful creator.

As time went on it was clear that the pre scriptions of most short-sighted children kept going up and up each time they came in. However, for long-sighted children, the prescription was typically staying quite stable.
The bottom line is, the more we slow
The lens that Essilor have brought out is called Stellest. This is a unique spectacle lens that can be put into most frames and can fit a high range of prescriptions.
The disadvantages of the prescription increasing each time are numerous. The higher the prescription the thicker the lenses; the cost of the lenses go up as they need to be thinned down and the choice of frame styles is more limited. Then there are the health issues. The more short-sight ed someone is the more they are at risk of certain eye conditions and the higher their prescription is the higher the risk becomes. We have massively invested in acquiring the highest standard of instruments in our practice, so we get to see the early signs of damage in people’s eyes due to having a high minus prescription. The most fre quent cause of this is a patient’s eye grow ing longer. This in turn causes the retina at the back of the eye to stretch and thin. The risks of retinal tears and detachments along with many other eye conditions are more prevalent as the retina thins out. The retina has millions of light-sensitive cells (rods and cones) and other nerve cells that receive and organise visual information. Your retina sends this information to your brain through your optic nerve, enabling you to see.
The average reduction of a myopic shift is 67%, so in simple terms, a child who might have ended up with a -10.00 prescription may have possibly only required a max imum of -4.50 if they had been wearing Stellest lenses from an early age. This is obviously a massive difference.
If you are very short sighted, then you will know the difficulties that are associated with it. This is our chance to make a difference. If you require any information, please call 0161 773 006.
I first joined The Village Optician Ltd in 2011 and that was my first proper introduc tion to myopia (short-sightedness).
not for a long time, but this is where they are wrong. Our community is particularly affected by high myopia and that has a lot to do with genetics. We see the same in a lot of Asian and Chinese communities where most of the studies have been done.
For those children who either could not or would not go for the contact lenses, we tried bifocals or progressive lenses to see if the power at the bottom of the lens would relax the child’s muscles when reading, thereby slowing down the changes in the child’sTheseprescription.methodshad negligible effect and as the year went by, we saw children’s pre scriptions going to levels that were alarm ing. We were, and still are, seeing families where all the children are around the -10.00 mark. Finally, a breakthrough. Halfway through last year Essilor, which is our main lens supplier, designed a new spectacle lens to help reduce the myopia (short sightedness) progression.Thiswasa great idea as there have been extensive studies and research into this are. The studies conclude that myopia and high myopia will show a significant increase globally, affecting an estimated five billion people, respectively by 2020.
So, when I was in my early years in prac tice, we tried all sorts of things based on different studies. At the time, the only accepted method to slow down myopia was specialised contact lenses. For some patients this was and still is a great solu tion. Cosmetically they are amazing, and they work to limit the short-sightedness to increasing at the original rate.
These lenses are designed for children from a young age until they are 21 years of age when the eye typically stops growing.
As a local optician we pride ourselves on getting to know our patients and their families and it was extremely interesting to see that there were certain families where nearly all their children were short-sighted to varying degrees. This was more likely if the parents were short-sighted as well.
This is a massive game changer for us as an optical practice and our community as a whole. For the first time we are now able to offer some young children who are start ing to go short-sighted a way of potentially managing it.
However, the option of contact lenses is not for everyone. They are not always suitable for young children who may not be able to look after them properly, and there are people who simply do not like the idea of putting something in their eye.
A journey short-sightednesswith
People reading this may think okay, that’s
In the last 12 months we have been trial ling these lenses with some children whose prescriptions were jumping up rapidly or who have a strong family history of high myopia. I am very pleased to say the vast majority have experienced a really positive effect on their prescriptions. Essilor are so confident that the product works, they offer a 12 month guarantee on their lenses. If the prescription goes up more than -0.50 in a 12-month period, then they will pay for the next pair of new lenses.

The test that we read about on Rosh HaShanah is called the test of Abraham, though it was Isaac who went through the physical ordeal of being bound, placed on the wood and almost killed.
Though the main theme of Rosh HaShan ah is spiritual (Penitence, Prayer and Charity) and not historical, it still has a commemorative flavour. It recalls the cre ation of the world and (on the sixth day of the first week) the creation of man.
The Jewish new years tell us what matters in a religious community such as Judaism – wise government (marked by the new year for kings), concern for Nature and the climate (the new year for trees), fairness to animals (the new year for animal tithes) and – above all – phys ical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual human health (the new year for years).
G-d was looking for a leader who could
(the parliamentary new year), the rule of law (the judicial new year), the economy (the financial new year).
Histories of Jewish preaching – begin ning even before the onset of the Midrash – indicate how discourses over the ages have tended to fit into one of these styles. What has really changed, however, is the content of the discourses.
In recent decades, the Modern Ortho dox movement has tended to return to halachic studies asking how contem porary themes can best be looked out through a halachic lens.
A quality society has its priorities right.
The Akedah is the test of Abraham, and through him the test of Israel.
Why then do we not speak about the Binding of Abraham? After all, the psychological and spiritual ordeal of Abraham was excruciating, regardless of the pain of Isaac!
Other events in the Biblical period which are said to have occurred on Rosh HaShanah are Cain and Abel bringing their offerings to G-d; the Binding of Isaac; Jacob’s dream of the ladder that joined earth and heaven; G-d hearing the prayers of three childless women – Sarah, Rachel and Hannah; Joseph’s release from prison; and the great assembly of the people convoked by Ezra and Nehemiah.
IS ALL WELL?
Apart from the “new year for years”, which is the date we celebrate next week, the trees have a new year in the month of Sh’vat, Nisan has one for kings and festivals, and a new year for animal tithes is in TheEllul.secular
The Emancipation radically affected the rabbi, moving him away from Talmudic expositions to more contemporary themes. The more modern the rabbi, the more contemporary was the sermon. The more traditional the rabbi, the more attention he paid to traditional rabbinic sources.
G-d was not only looking for a leader. He was looking for a people… and the leader would personify the people. Leo Baeck said, “Every people is a question which G-d addresses to humanity and every people, from its place, with its special talents and possibilities, must answer for its own sake and for the sake of humanity.”
WAS IT ABRAHAM’S AKEDAH?
calendar has a number of analogies – there are the academic, the parliamentary, judicial, the financial and taxation years, and others.
THREE TYPES OF SERMON
These new years are not just random and arbitrary. The secular new years reveal the ideal pattern of values and pri orities – quality education (marked by the academic new year), good government
The “sh’varim” sermon has three sections, makes (usually) three points and does not stray from its overall theme.
The Tenach asks, “Is it well with you? Is it well with your spouse? Is it well with the children?” (II Kings 4:26). As Rosh HaShanah looms ahead these are ques tions we should all be asking about our society and ourselves.

Jews in the UK are well used to honour ing the Royal Family - in fact we do it on a weekly basis. For the past 70 years we have prayed for the wellbeing of the Queen. Last Shabbat was the first that we prayed for "Our Sovereign Lord King Charles" and asked "the Supreme King of Kings . . . to preserve the King in life, guard him and deliver him from all trouble and sorrow".
I was in attendance when Charles gave a speech to the World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, in 2020, in which he described the Shoah as "searingly relevant". I was fortunate enough to meet him at a reception at the British Embassy during that trip and he was, as ever, won derfully engaging and solicitous. As some one with huge respect for and dedication to his mother's memory we can expect the transition to his sovereignty to be smooth

I was deeply saddened at the passing of Her Majesty Queen Eliza beth II and quite frankly, am still extremely upset. The events of last Thursday moved so fast after the Buckingham Palace an nouncement at 12.30pm that her doctors were “concerned” for her health.
Most of us have only known Queen Eliza beth II as the ruler of Britain and the Com monwealth, which probably explains why so many of us feel such a tremendous loss.
was an icon of tradition, stability, and a beacon of morality. Her passing is a huge loss to all of us.
On Monday, when Her Majesty the Queen's funeral takes place at Westminster Abbey, hundreds of thousands of people are ex pected to line the streets of London and the route of the cortège to Berkshire and her final resting place at Windsor Castle. This is just a reflection of the love for our longest serving monarch which has been manifested in so many different ways since we received the sad news that she had passed away peacefully on Thursday at the age of 96. We have had endless tributes from those who knew her and so many stories of her kindness. The thousand upon thousand of bouquets of flowers left for her respectfully at so many sites throughout the UK are testament to her legacy.

Third, some have commented that the Queen believed her family were direct de scendants of King David, despite her being head of the Church of England.
Regrettably I never met the Queen face to face, although I was at the Albert Hall, Wembley Stadium and other venues when she was present. which is emblematic of our country's long history. Although she was old and frail and unable to travel to state events, she was still ever-present in our national life. We knew one day she would depart but some how when it happened the shock was still visceral. However, our national life must go on. Indeed, what makes our country so spe cial is that, whenever a monarch passes - whether that be after a long or short reign - tradition dictates that the succession will be seamless and steeped in history. This is something that we Jews can relate to well. The organisation I represent has existed for more than 250 years and was actually founded to honour a new king. The Board of Deputies of British Jews originated in 1760, when prominent dignitaries paid tribute to King George III upon his acces sion and, due to its longevity and influence, the Board of Deputies is considered a "priv ileged body" with the ability to petition Her Majesty for an audience. My predecessor, Vivian Wineman, had occasion to do this

As close members of her family made their way to Balmoral, many of us knew that it was just a matter of time before a further dreaded announcement would be made, which came at 6.30pm.
Queen Elizabeth was a solid pillar of sta bility and a tall tower of strength. Indeed, she was a true inspiration to so many. Only Louis XIV of France remains a longer reign ing monarch in history with a 72-year and 110-day stint (1643 – 1715). Queen Elizabeth is now the second longest reigning monarch in world history (6 Feb 1952 – 8 Sep 2022).
She really will be sadly missed, as she was truly the mother of the nation. Her reign was momentous and historic. She
We know that King Charles will continue this wonderful legacy. We were honoured to have him as guest of honour at a dinner to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Board of Deputies. And in 2019, he called on the Board to help him in staging a re ception to honour the Jewish community at Buckingham Palace. It was a telling sign of the high regard with which the Jewish com munity is held by the entire Royal Family.

The "Tochechah" (the Biblical curses) is said softly so as not to suggest that the Reader enjoys uttering the words. I recall a rabbi who couldn’t hold the anger back one Yom Kippur and shouted, "You’re allThehypocrites!"bestapproach is for the congre gation to know its own failings and not need a stinging rebuke, and for the Reader to avoid the shouting and condemnation… even if the audience deserves them, and to find a construc tive way to improve things in the future.

GATHERING THE PILGRIMS
We will all remember exactly where we were when receiving the sad news of the passing of her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. As she reigned for seventy years, longer than any mon arch, she was the only monarch most of us knew. She was a pivotal historic figure, a fixture in all our lives and the force that held the country together. Her extraordinary longevity lent her an air of permanence that makes her death, even at an advanced age, somehow Theshocking.Queen’s coronation in June 1953 was a great healing event for Great Britain and indeed the world, following the horrors of WW2. When she ascended the throne, Her Majesty stated: “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service.” She was fortunate to live a long life. And throughout she remained utterly devoted to our service. She proved herself to be one of the rare public figures in such a prestigious position who can adapt to a changing world around her. She

In the first translation we see Jacob away from home and uncertain of the future; eventually his family settle in Israel and grow crops of which the first fruits were offered to G-d.
As Queen, she visited more than one hundred countries across six continents during her reign and was admired by people, politicians and religious leaders everywhere. This was reflected in the global response to her passing, including the lights of the Eiffel Tower in Par is being turned off, the Empire State Building in New York being illuminated in purple and silver, a moment of silence at the US Open semi-final, or flags flying at half-mast around the world. • Or, do we prefer to be part of the crowd, to find ourselves sewn within the fabric of the klal, to hide within that which is infinitely greater than ourselves?
OUR UNIQUE ROLE
We must determinedly search for our own uniqueness but then strive to fully devote that uniqueness to the klal, to that which transcends our limited selves. Our true greatness lies in finding our great ness within that which is greater than ourselves. We mustn’t think of ourselves as meaningless and hidden amongst the masses, an unimportant soul lost in the crowd. Each of us is unique, each of us important; but our true importance lies within the deep understanding of how we can fit into that which is greater than ourselves. The Mishnah says that we must each consider as if the world was created for us (Sanhedrin 37a.). The deep expla nation behind this is as follows: each of us plays a unique role in this cosmic sympho ny we call life. Just as every screw in the radio is fundamental, and a single missing screw renders the entire radio obsolete, so too, each of us is fundamental, and without us, the story of our world would not be complete. Each of us is a letter in the ultimate Sefer Torah, a word in the story of life. We must write our own story, with the recognition that our story is part of a bigger story, His-tory, our story.

INDIVIDUALITY AND COMMUNITY
An identifying characteristic of this form of order is that when a single piece from the structure is missing, the entire structure is affected. This is because each piece is intrinsic and fundamental. If a single screw in the radio is missing, the entire radio won’t work; if a single note in the song is missing, the entire melody is affected. However, if any number of books are missing from the library, the rest of the library will be unaffected. This
The same principle applies to music. Anyone who plays an instrument knows that music is nothing other than a bunch of individual notes being played, one at a time. Each note by itself is not music; it’s just a sound. Music is when the notes are played in the correct sequence, at the perfect tempo, at the right pace; when the musician is able to string the notes together into a melodious oneness so that the listener no longer hears the notes, only the music. That is music.
components. This is the deep truth be hind physical and spiritual beauty.
When you look at a beautiful sunset on the beach, where exactly is the location of beauty? Is it the sunset? The reflection on the water? The contrast of the beach against the sunset? It’s none of them and all of them. Beauty is when sepa rate, seemingly contradictory compo nents somehow melt into a oneness, whereby they each bring out something transcendent from within all the other
Individuality and Community: Are these Fundamental Contradictions?
• Do we prefer to be unique, to focus on our individuality and uniqueness, to stand out from the crowd?
This brings us back to our original question, wherein we find a conflict between our own individual sense of uniqueness, and the fact that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. On the one hand, we each have a deep desire to be unique, to stand out. What is some times referred to as the “lone ranger” syndrome, we all have the desire to be the hero, the superstar, to have the spotlight shine solely on us as we unaidedly save the day. We have a sense of unique pur pose, we know that we were created for a specific reason, and we know that we have talents and gifts that no one else in the world possesses. We want to be seen, heard, and understood. We wish to be important, accepted, and cared about.
BY RABBI REICHMANSHMUEL
Countless To rah themes and halachos are cen tered around the value of the com munity (tzibbur/ klal) and how one must dedicate them selves to the greater good of the Jewish People. If everyone is unique and individ ually important, how can we understand the concept of unity and the need to work toward becoming part of something big ger than ourselves? Must we sacrifice our uniqueness and individuality for the sake of the “klal,” for the greater good of the community? What is the deeper Jewish approach to this struggle and conflict between individuality and community, between uniqueness and being part of a unified group?
idea is most potently clear in its applica tion to human genes and DNA. If a single chromosome is missing from an embryo, the child will unfortunately grow up with extremely severe defects. All of this from one missing chromosome.
On the other hand, we simultaneously understand that this world is not only about “me.” We are part of something infinitely greater than ourselves. Looking at the night sky, we can’t help but feel our selves shrink into nothingness, realizing just how small we truly are. We are part of a plan, a grand cosmic story, which expands far beyond the borders of our own individual life. And strangely enough, we actually enjoy experiences where we melt into the background of something infinitely bigger than ourselves. If you’ve ever been to a stirring kumzitz (group singing), with the lights off and the music playing, you know how spectacular it feels to be nothing, to neither be heard or seen as an individual, nor to see or hear anyone else. All you hear is the collective echoing of hundreds of voices pouring out their souls; all you see is shadows and oneness. Which one of these desires is truly impor tant; which one do we most strongly crave?
THE IDEAL: SYNTHESIS
This is the deep explanation behind a cryptic halachah regarding Sifrei Torah and mezuzos. If a single letter is missing from either, the Sefer Torah or mezuzah is rendered pasul (invalid). Many are confused by this; how can a single letter ruin an entire Sefer Torah? However, based on our discussion about the third level of order, the answer becomes clear. As the Ramban explains in the introduction to his commentary on Bereishis, the entire Torah is one interconnected sefer, one elongated shem Hashem (Name of G-d). In other words, it’s a single organic entity. People understand that a single missing chromo some can affect an entire human being; the same is true for a Sefer Torah. These are organic entities, shaped by the third level of order, so even a single missing letter renders the entire text pasul
In our last article, we discussed the high est form of order, as explained by R’ Dessler. In this level of order, pieces come together in such a way that they create something greater than the sum of their parts. It’s where the parts come together into a one ness in a way that creates something that transcends the parts themselves.
The ideal is to synthesize both. Klal Yisrael is a nation shaped by the third level of order. Each of us is completely unique and intrinsic, but only when we are connected to the rest of Klal Yisrael, living with a higher purpose. The ideal is to find your uniqueness within the klal, within that which is infinitely greater than yourself. To find your talent, your passion, your gift, and then wholeheartedly devote that to Klal Yisrael, to the world. We need to ask ourselves: how can my uniqueness contribute to the Jewish People and the world as a whole? Then, we must turn the focus of our life toward actualizing our unique potential, toward becoming the person we were meant to become.
EACH PART IS FUNDAMENTAL

Doubt is contagious, and doubt in the public sector creeps into our private lives and infects our relationships. Instead of believing in people and affording them the benefit of the doubt, we assume the worst, and thereby, we corrupt our relationships. Sturdy relationships are built on trust and seeing the best in others. Even when we don’t understand people’s intentions, trust allows us to have faith in their motives. Trust provides confidence and enables dependance. When doubt sets into these relationships, they are quick to crumble.
In a broader sense, our confession of timhon leivav addresses more than just theological wandering. Sadly, we occupy a world with too much doubt and not enough belief, and, as a result we have all become chronic skeptics.
or will my true identity be revealed, expos ing me as a fraud? Unhealthy and extreme timhon leivav gnaws at our conscience, casting doubt over society, relationships, and even personal identity. For this we feel remorse and confess. Too much doubt and not enough conviction and belief.

and prevails over our faith. Confessing the sins of timhon leivav, we apologize for the lingering doubt which vexes faith and thins our belief.
TOO LITTLE DOUBT?
It is also fair to ask: shouldn’t we also confess the sin of living without enough doubt. We all benefit from a little more doubt. Isn’t a healthy degree of doubt crucial for integrity and for honest self-examination? Can we possess, as my teacher Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein wrote, “ a passion for right that is insufficiently informed by introspection”? Without rea sonable doubt, we become too cocky and too self-confident in our own views, and too dismissive toward others with opposing views. Our politically polarized world has radicalized our tendency to discredit any opinion which doesn’t match our own, and to vilify those who possess differing views. Aside from being disrespectful to other human beings, brash confidence in our own exclusive truth invites simplicity and shallowness.Weliveinan

We relentlessly suspect the accuracy of our news, because, in an internet age of un limited information flow, we are swamped with fake news. Institutional trust is at an all-time low, and we possess little faith in public institutions such as government, corporations and communal organizations. When trust in public institutions attenu ates, the fabric of society withers and, with out common rallying points society falls into disunity. Distrust and doubt corrode social harmony and diminish any shared sense of common endeavor.
Hashem, help us navigate the murky depths of timhon leivav.
Hashem gifted us with wisdom to discern right from wrong, true from false, and real ity from fantasy. He also endowed us with passion to deeply believe in values, in other people, and most of all, in ourselves. He doesn’t want us to live in a swirl of doubt, and when we slip into crippling timhon leivav we forfeit one of His greatest gifts. Our timhon leivav confession seeks teshuva and forgiveness for consenting to too much doubt and for ignoring conviction.
religious, political, and ethnic identity. We have become so ideologically self-assured that we don’t often turn the microscope in wards to probe our own values or to check their fitness. We are too busy incriminating alternate ideologies and too triumphant in taking ideological “victory laps”, that we have eliminated doubt from our inner dia logue- if any internal dialogue even exists.
IMPOSTOR SYNDROME
The tochacha section of parshat Ki Tavo depicts horrifying scenes of wretched hu man suffering. As divine retribution for our ongoing national infidelity, we plummet into a dark world of destruction and chaos. A gruesome apocalypse unleashes a wave of fear and panic, numbing and confusing it victims. This dazed condition is described with the suggestive phrase of timhon leivav. Our wounded hearts are blanked and bewildered.Inaddition to this condition of confusion and incomprehension, the term timhon leivav also portrays a syndrome of doubt and disbelief. Pain and suffering become so severe that we start to doubt: can this really be happening? Why is Hashem subjecting us to such nightmarish suffering? Will it ever end, or is this our new reality? Unman ageable suffering leads to incredulity and, regrettably, we lose certainty about our security, our future, and our very existence. Timhon leivav describes a muddled, Kaf kaesque world of upheaval, which envelops us with agonizing doubt. The foundations of our reality begin to crumble.
Faith is never perfect, and even devout believers experience passing moments of doubt and of religious uncertainty. We can forgive ourselves for these short-lived mo ments of religious qualms, but not for con suming doubt which grips our imagination
Every Yom Kippur, in our extensive viduy-confessional known as ‘al chet’, we acknowledge sins of “timhon leivav”. Evi dently, the disorder of timhon leivav isn’t limited to the tochacha nightmare of divine punishment, but afflicts our daily lives.

TAINTED RELATIONSHIPS
Healthy self-doubt leads to genuine introspection, and to the type of penetrat ing self-analysis which lays ourselves bare, but provides more authentic identity, more internalized values and most of all personal integrity. So,aswe
begin the season of repentance and improvement, we ask Hashem to remove doubt, but also to preserve it. In our search for Hashem and for belief, please help us remove doubt and darkness and provide clarity and contentment. Help us remove corrosive doubt and toxic skepti cism from our world. Help us build trustful relationships of confidence and commit ment. Help us believe in ourselves, our abilities and our accomplishments.
But also put doubt into our heart. Let this doubt soften us with intellectual humility and with respect for those who are different from us. Remove fake self-assurance and shallow certainty. Let us see clearly our authentic selves, even if that view is blurry. At least it is real.
In the narrow sense, the crime of tim hon leivav refer to sins of religious doubt. Often, when we grapple with the larger mysteries of life or with difficult personal struggles, we question Hashem’s motives, or we doubt His reasons. When we face indecipherable questions, we wonder about Hashem. Even when we don’t doubt His motives, we sometimes struggle to make Him relevant in our world. The world doesn’t always feel G-dly, and we are often uncertain about His impact in our lives.

At some point, when we exhaust peo ple and institutions to doubt, we start to suspect the last possible target- ourselves. The modern world has introduced a new and harsh form of timhon leivav, referred to as “impostor syndrome”. Highly suc cessful people begin to doubt their talents, accomplishments, or ability to live up to other people’s expectations. Am I really that successful, or have my accomplishments been accidental or lucky? Can I continue to live up to internal or external expectations,

In both passages there are two steps: first the blessings or curses “come upon you”, and then “hisigucha” (they ‘cleave to you’ or ‘overtake you’). The word hisigu cha is a construction of the verb l’hasig, meaning ‘to grasp’ or ‘understand’, and also ‘to reach’ or ‘acquire’. This alludes to our process of interpretation; first something comes upon us, and then we ‘acquire’ an experience of it according to our hasagah, our understanding. The way we ‘reach’ out to and interpret phenom ena is the same way we ‘acquire’ and experience them. Whether something is a curse or a blessing depends on our consciousness.Mayonlyblessings come upon us!

This idea is expanded on further in the Sidra and, towards the end of it Moshe reminds them of how glorious their trip in the Midbar had been – free food, clothing that didn’t wear out, experiencing miracles and that the best way to keep the blessings coming is to keep the Mitzvot!
On the subject of blessings, the Torah then teaches how, when they arrive in the Holy Land, the tribes of Israel would split into two and each group go up one mountain and in between the mountains, the Levi’im would read out a list of blessings (and unfortunately the opposite too..) that fall upon people depending on whether of not they keep Mitzvot.
The person ends with a prayer - “Hashem, look down from your Holy abode and bless your people and the land”. Filled with joy and gratitude to Hashem, the farmer returns home, yearning for his next opportunity to witness all the grandeur and elevation in the Beit Hamikdash.
For Parshat Ki Tavo we have a very joyous opening to the Sidra - the Mitzva of Bikkurim! During the time of the Beit Hamikdash this Mitzvah was performed amidst great fanfare, music and all. A farmer would go down to his field and see that his produce was ready to be harvested (any one of the seven species with which the land of Israel is blessed. He ties a reed around it and prepares to ascend to our beloved Yerushalayim! Upon arrival, he is greeted with music and a warm welcome and presents his food gift to the Kohanim.
We are then taught of the ceremony that took place on Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival, where half the nation (Reuven, Gad, Asher, Zevulun, Dan and Naftali) ascended Mount Eival and the other half (Try to see if you can “Fill in the blanks”!) Mount Gerizim. In the valley between them, the Leviim would announce blessings for those who uphold the Torah and the opposite for those who intentionally transgress it. Many of the examples stated are relevant to us in daily life - not to shame someone behind their back, or offend one’s parents for example.

Then, the Torah warns of what can go wrong and sadly, the warnings turned into prophecy. Throughout the ages, the Jewish people have found themselves at the hands of bitter enemies who have brought about much hunger, thirst and suffering and sometimes worse than that. Whilst one cannot specify why an individual suffers, the Torah reveals to us that as a nation, we will see patterns of following the Mitzvot bringing blessing and deviating from them bringing the opposite. Other prophetic words include the scattering of the Jews throughout the world - as we all know to be the case as well as the fact that we have constantly remained small in number.
The Parsha continues with the tremendous blessings that will meet the nation if they keep the Torah, describing how our fruit basket will be filled, how our nation will be blessed with children, finding blessings wherever they come or go.
If you want success in life, Moshe concludes in this parsha, “Guard the Torah!”.

Parshat Ki Tavo opens with a most happy Mitzvah – bringing Bikkurim. Do you remember the seven special fruits and produce that the Land of Israel is blessed with? Well, when they have ripened, the farmer lovingly prepared them and with much joy, travelled to Jerusalem to the Beit Hamikdash and presented the food gift to the Kohanim! The farmer would also go once every four years to proclaim that he had given the correct food portions to the correct people and there too the Torah says one will be filled with happiness (when they think) about the blessing they were given by Hashem.
Towards the end of the Sidra Moshe tells the Jewish people - you saw all that Hashem did to Pharaoh and his nation and the miracles He has done for you. You have been led in the Midbar for 40 years living off the Manna - your clothes (miraculously) did not wear out, nor did your shoes. You had no bread nor wine to consume; instead you were taken care of by Hashem.
The Parsha continues with another Mitzvah: “Vidui Maasrot” - after the first three years of giving the different sets of Ma’aser, one comes to the Beit Hamikdash and declares that they have assigned their Ma’aser to the correct beneficiary and have not eaten it in the wrong manner.

By the time it gets to the last day though, of round 3, no less, no one wants to eat yet an other big meal (nor set and clear the table for it) so we like to keep it light. Meat boards are the perfect light meal. Our website has details of all the new Meatboards we have designed just in time for the busy chagim, from the kid friendly ‘Munch Board’ to the ‘Deluxe Meat Board’ and add ons including candied facon (my absolute favourite) and popcorn chicken, there is something for every age and every taste. Just toss a salad together, crisp up the challah, don’t forget dessert (a Victoria sponge perhaps?) and there you have it. A meal fit for a King.
Kosher Deli was established with the intention of making kosher meat and poultry affordable for all with the convenience of multiple locations and a comprehensive delivery service. All this without compromising on kashrus or quality.

With almost 40 years experience, our company has the ability to move household and personal effects and antiques and fine art with the professionalism and care that comes from that experience coupled with an attention to detail. We construct our own Tri-Wall and wooden packing cases on site and employ full-time art installers and handymen for those ‘extra’ jobs that always need doing on a move or installation. And size is no limitation – we have moved trains, boats and planes across the world and even bridges and a 5,000 seater tent!

I, for one, like to keep things simple but delicious. For first night, we have our traditional Rosh Hashana ‘Head Soup’ which has all the vegetable simanim as well as a lamb head. That’s a meal in and of itself. But then we have pickled brisket cooked to perfection in our factory (you can order it for yourself through our order line) with sweet and sour red cab bage and roast potatoes slathered in duck fat (roast your duck on a grill over a pan to catch the fat drippings. You won’t regret it).

We are taught that G-d put royalty on earth so that we can have an inkling of what His Kingship really is. At this time, with the changeover from Queen to King we are about to witness a level of pageantry that most of us have never seen before. As a people, whenever Jews celebrate, our minds always turn to food. So at the time of year when we reconfirm G-d as our King, and have so many meals to prepare in celebration, what do we cook?
